All required documentation that must be uploaded in accordance with 19 CFR 190.51 will be provided to CBP within 24 hours of the filing of the drawback claim. The undersigned acknowledges that a false certification of the foregoing renders the drawback claim incomplete and subject to denial. The undersigned is fully aware of the sanctions provided in 18 U.S.C. 1001, and 18 U.S.C. 550, and 19 U.S.C. 1593a.”
(3) Election of line item designation for imported merchandise. Merchandise on a specific line on an entry summary may be designated for either direct identification or substitution claims but a single line on an entry summary may not be split for purposes of claiming drawback under both direct identification and substitution claims. The first complete drawback claim accepted by CBP which designates merchandise on a line on an entry summary establishes this designation for any remaining merchandise on that same line.
(4) Limitation on line item eligibility for imported merchandise. Claimants filing substitution drawback claims under part 190 for imported merchandise associated with a line item on an entry summary if any other merchandise covered on that entry summary has been designated as the basis of a claim under part 191 must provide additional information enabling CBP to verify the availability of drawback for the indicated merchandise and associated line item within 30 days of claim submission. The information to be provided will include, but is not limited to: summary document specifying the lines used and unused on the import entry; the import entry summary, corresponding commercial invoices, and copies of all drawback claims that previously designated the import entry summary; and post summary/liquidation changes (for imports or drawback claims, if applicable).
No where in there does it say you need to provide the 8 digit HTS code. The answer is D.

2024.05.19 16:45 bwl2 1 and done is getting ridiculous

Since I hit Fujin a few weeks ago, 33%-50% of my matches are 1 and done on any given day. It's always people leaving on loss or a close win in order to protect their internet points. This is pathetic constantly seeing players dip to protect such an unremarkable rank. I've been playing since early T7 and it has never been this bad. I know "no one owes me a rematch" but this is clearly self serving toxic behavior. I've seen maybe 1 player leave when they're clearly the superior player. Don't sell me on poor connections and pizza rolls being ready. This is a intentional, methodical choice by a significant segment of the community and its ruining the ladder experience for me. I'm sitting at a crossroads because I'm enjoying this game, but as Aris/avoidingthepuddle has said "Man, Tekken players are bitches". Maybe I should be glad that Akuma is releasing soon. I can take him to mid platinum (roughly the equivalent of Fujin) and actually get some damn sets in.

2024.05.19 16:38 Wild_Scientist3890 AITAH - In-Laws, Need I say more

My wife and I were fortunate enough to benefit from the Bitcoin craze, which allowed us to acquire some extra funds. With this newfound financial freedom, we decided to purchase a home in my wife’s small hometown on a lake. This decision was made with the intention of investing in a property that would appreciate in value and also serve to strengthen our children's connection to her family, including her grandparents, her parents, her sister, and her sister’s children.
The weekdays at the lake house are serene and enjoyable, with quiet moments and pleasant weather. However, the weekends bring about a different atmosphere.
Early in the morning, my wife’s parents arrive with my wife’s sisters children, without the children's parents, expecting breakfast and adding to the chaos. The most challenging aspect, though, is my wife’s sister frequently leaving her children in our care without prior notice. This routine has become increasingly burdensome as these children, who seem to be primarily raised by their grandparents (while the parents are fully capable of watching their own children), exhibit challenging behavior. They are often disruptive, destructive, and seem to require constant attention, leading me to believe there may be underlying issues such as ADHD.
While my wife and I work hard during the week, I yearn for weekends to be a time of relaxation and family bonding. Instead, I find myself tending to someone else’s children, which only fosters resentment.
Part of me suspects that my wife’s sister’s actions stem from jealousy, as she lacks a lakeside home herself. I wish to involve my wife’s parents more in our family activities, allowing them to bond with our children, but the constant childcare responsibilities prevent this from happening.
The real challenge lies in my wife’s reluctance to confront her family about this issue. Previous attempts to address it resulted in prolonged conflicts, discouraging further discussion. Her family dynamics, characterized by emotional volatility and an inability to communicate effectively, only exacerbate the situation.
However, compared to my own family, who respect boundaries and communicate openly, my wife's family tends to overstep boundaries. This disparity fuels my suspicion that envy may be driving their behavior.
Despite our dissatisfaction being known, we have yet to find a lasting solution. I am torn between wanting to preserve our family's relationship with my wife’s family, especially considering their fragile ages and health, and my desire to enjoy weekends in peace.
While selling the lake house seems like an easy way out, I also want to provide my children with the opportunity to create lasting memories there. It’s a delicate balance between preserving family ties and safeguarding our own well-being.

2024.05.19 16:26 SearingPhoenix Faro Plague? Friedkin Plague?

So, back when I was playing Zero Dawn, I remember two datapoints right at the beginning of the FAS building tickling my brain a bit. They were a good bit of worldbuilding, but were quickly overshadowed by the Chariot-line reveal and then the discussion between Ted and Lis at the top of the building.
I recently looked back at them, and (maybe) this was obvious to many other people, but I think a few puzzle pieces clicked into place when I re-read them. Here are the two:
https://horizon.fandom.com/wiki/Reception_Log
Reception Log: July 7, 2064 9:54 AM Field Commandant Daing of the Indo-Malay Agricultural Combine arrived with his delegation. Refreshments to be served before their 10:15 AM sales presentation on the Chariot line. Per instructions, food will be vegetarian only.
10:07 AM Sander Agnew, Vice President of Territorial Integrity from FreshGrounds Coffee Global arrived with his entourage. Refreshments to be served before their 10:30 AM sales presentation on the Chariot line. Per instructions, will use FreshGrounds "Tacoma" blend, no artificial creamers.
10:12 AM Uh...so that happened. Called security. And janitorial, to clean up the coffee that was spilled - actually, more like thrown. I wasn't aware that the Indo-Malay Combine grows coffee beans. And that FreshGrounds' "acquisition team" has tried to take their fields, by force, repeatedly. I think Commandant Daing had Agnew by the hair for a second there. Who schedules these things? I'm going to drop a line to Sales. This can't happen again.
//horizon.fandom.com/wiki/Re:_Complaint
FROM: Jay Friedkin TO: Reception SUBJECT: Re: Complaint
Hey Reception, if that is your real name. Wanna know who scheduled Indo-Malay right next to FreshGrounds? That would be me, Senior VP of Sales. Wanna know why? After that little hair-pulling incident, both sides increased their bids by 40%.
I'll explain, because your receptionist-level brain probably requires it. Those two sides are FIGHTING. And what do we sell? That's right, COMBAT MACHINES. We WANT them to hate each other. So they will try to fight each other with... what? That's right again, COMBAT MACHINES. Which they will pay us a lot of money for.
So I suggest you go back to serving coffee with a blank smile, and let me do my much-more-complicated job.
Thx a bunch, Mr. Friedkin to you
It's a bit of benign worldbuilding that sets the tone for FAS -- they intentionally put the 'FreshGrounds Coffee Global' people right next to the 'Indo-Malay Agricultural Combine' in order to get them into a fight so they'll buy into the Chariot line. Like I said above, while playing this tickled my brain as good worldbuilding, tone setting, etc. but just got filed away as 'FAS is unscrupulous. Got it.' -- indeed, this is the preamble to the Chariot line reveal; we don't know at the moment we read these datapoints that the Chariot line is the product line that became the Faro Plague.
But on a recent re-read my brain said, "Hey wait... Indo-Malay Combine. So, South Pacific? Isn't Timor in the South Pacific region too?"
It sure is. What else was from Timor and the South Pacific? Oh, right -- the Hartz-Timor Swarm.
I think that if you read between the lines a bit here, I these two datapoints might actually show the origin of the Hartz-Timor swarm. It was an engineered regional conflict by FAS -- or at least, if not engineered, shamelessly leveraged. They clearly wanted to stoke this conflict to sell Chariot-line robots. Now, it's unlikely that the same Indo-Malay Agriculture Combine is the same as the Hartz-Timor Energy Combine (presumably, one is in agriculture, the other in energy; I imagine post-Clawback South Pacific did a lot of tidal and solar energy), but it implies that FAS was very willing to pull strings to create and enflame conflict in the region.
I wouldn't be surprised if this tugged on a string that led to the 'the truth gets out,' and 'real reason for the glitch,' that's often cited as a vagueness by Lis that's yet unexplored/unresolved. I would be 0% surprised to find out that Ted gave the go-ahead on some 'questionable tactics' plan to further exploit the situation in the region. That said, I don't think the narrative needs to turn Ted into more of a monster than it already has, so maybe we'll never see exploration into that mention since at this point it's kind of exhaustive. Perhaps it somehow implicates other people/groups to pull them in full-circle.
Regardless, should we really be blaming one Jay Friedkin, Senior VP of Sales (err, sorry. Mr. Friedkin, Senior VP of Sales) for the end of the world?

A player that just doesn't want to perform no matter what. (club legend)
So i am currently a really succesfull team who have just won a back to back champions league, my first premier league and a quadruple, however on of my star players (club legend) Kanta Delin is playing very mediocre. I just cannot get him to work.
My team always plays a 4-2-3-1 style, and i have over the years tried this guy all across the frontline, but i can never seem to find consistency/impact. Most of his goal contributions come from set pieces. Nearing his thirties, i have no intention of selling him as i love loyal players too much.
The same question arises with one of my star strikers, Spataru. Playing him upfront neither being an advanced forward or a pressing forward seem to work. (had two good season but it was with a workshop tactic, which i do not want to use anymore, i want to build something myself (which seems to have worked looking at my achievments.
What am i doing wrong, is it purely tactical, is it down to the players? (the screenshots show context, stats, and achievments.

2024.05.19 15:18 SupermanSkivvies_ Advice on getting into wholesale and local retail shops?

Hello fellow candlemakers!
I have a witchy-themed business. It started with candles during Covid and branched out to be so much more because I'm a serial crafter. 😂
I'm doing fine online (Etsy) and *great* in person at local markets.
I'm ready to start looking into selling wholesale and at local retail shops. A few local business have approached me (salons, balounges, coffee shops) and I'm just not sure where to start in terms of marketing/pitch materials mostly. The candles I sell are in 11oz jars, 6 or 7 different scents.
For local retail: My brain has so many ideas. - Do I try to have a meeting in person and bring one of each candle? - Do I make tea lights or maybe wax melts of each scent and gift just one candle so they can see the finished product? - Should I send a brochure (I'm a graphic designer, so no problem there) like a mini catalogue? Or just send a PDF? I think there's a benefit to physical materials over digital.
For wholesale: I was just approved at Faire, but haven't set anything up yet. - Do people typical want to receive samples of the scents before a purchase? - Do people typically send any extra marketing materials/display materials along with their items?
Lots of ideas to mull on, and I'd love to hear about your experiences, advice, or recommendations.
Thanks friends!

2024.05.19 15:16 MagniBear980512 Beyond the Skin Deep: a short essay on cultural colonialism and Asian male exclusion

The excitement surrounding a new Assassin's Creed title can quickly turn to disappointment when it reinforces harmful tropes. Assassin's Creed Shadows presents a problematic case of cultural appropriation and neo-colonial fantasy.
I’ve been a fan of the Assassin's Creed franchise; however, I couldn't help but feel silenced and suppressed when I saw the trailer. I’m sure many share this frustration. That being said, I’ve seen little argument on the internet that represents the asian community.
The core issue lies in prioritising a superficial diversity as a metric of cultural authenticity. However, it’s not difficult to see that the insertion is wrong on many levels.
Firstly, demoting and excluding Asian male characters in a setting steeped in Asian culture is a missed opportunity. Rich historical periods abound in Asia, offering a chance to explore diverse Asian cultures through the lens of an Asian protagonist. Sengoku period boasts a vibrant tapestry of history, brimming with potential for an Asian protagonist's journey. Tales of countless Japanese samurai have been passed down through the ages. Shunting them aside in favour of a character from a different ethnicity undermines the very cultural immersion the game strives for. Subsequently, this so-called cultural product has been reduced to a mere puppet show.
Western media, including video games, has a poor track record of portraying Asian men as strong, masculine and heroic figures. They're often demoted to comedic sidekicks or one-dimensional villains. Assassin's Creed's decision to seemingly bypass an Asian male samurai protagonist in a Japanese setting is an intentional mistake, and some might see it as a cynical ploy for "diversity points", under the guise of cultural exchange.
Having to insert an African man as a figure of diversity, while losing touch with the context of Asian cultural backgrounds is a form of ignorant racism by itself. It suggests that there’s not enough racial diversity on the continent. Especially when it comes to Celebrating diversity within Asia, few seem to care enough to populate fictional worlds with characters from various Asian ethnicities.
Not having the fundamental respect for the indigenous people that inhabited these islands proves how egocentric and narcissistic Ubisoft and the group it represents have become. The “Asians all look the same” stereotype touting homogeneity should also be prevented and combated, adding fuel to it is counterintuitive and against the cause.
Secondly, depicting a black character as the central figure enacting over-glorified violence in a Japanese setting is insensitive and potentially reinforces a cultural neo-colonial narrative demoting and excluding Asian men. Whether it's historically accurate is besides the point, although it remains questionable, forcing a character of colour into a role that perpetuates negative stereotypes is disrespectful, to both Asians and Africans.
There is enough cultural background for a game to be set in Africa,so I can't help but question whether it's really about diversity and minority representation. Forcing a black character in Japanese culture shows the lack of confidence the studio has in selling African cultural heritage in pop art products. Just to entertain the thought, a game set in Ethiopia would have existed if they wanted it to, since the historical and cultural landscape is just as rich and vibrant. Assassin's Creed Shadows has the potential to be an immersive experience, but it should strive for cultural sensitivity. By featuring authentic Asian heroes and delving deeper into the chosen historical period, the game can avoid accusations of appropriation and create a narrative that's both respectful and engaging for a global audience.

2024.05.19 15:03 Kali_404 My farmers market haul

I made a post a few days ago about going to the local farmers market, and I wanted to report on the fun day and huge haul!
  1. Got a ton of ground beef, pork chops, chicken. Prices per pound were similar or even lower to Loblaws, but the meat looks so much fresher. The chicken I got was twice the size as a grocery store chicken!
  2. I got some surprising delicious baked goods. I have a health condition that limits the foods I can eat, yet the market had multiple stalls selling foods safe for me to eat. I got some donuts that taste like old school Tim Horton donuts, some éclairs and cookies. It was a real joy to come across them!
  3. So many fruits and veggies. I got beautiful fresh and bright raspberries for 2 bucks a clam (and they are the large ones, not the half sized), giant bag of green beans for 5, beautiful cabbage for 3, a whole heaping basket of over 20 red peppers for 10. Big bundles of tender asparagus 2 for 5. A large bag of unique lions mane mushrooms for 11 (they were delicious in butter!). I know I got more but there was so much that I had to get right to food prep when I got home so I could fit all the food I got into my fridge and freezers!
  4. So many snacks, drink, entertainment. There were musicians playing some really beautiful music, and there were so many ready-to-eat goodies in every nook and cranny. I couldn't have much, but my husband was on cloud 9 with all the samples and goodies he was able to get! He got a delicious juicy burger with the fixings, and a delicious box of fresh apple fritters.
  5. The merchandise stalls were so much fun! Even if they weren't items I wanted myself, it was fun to check out all the cool designs and creations businesses had thought up, or to be able to check out items that are otherwise hard to find. I was able to get a whole set of pie molds for 10, which will make homemade handpies and perogies an absolute breeze! There were such beautiful flowers that made the market smell so fresh along with the baked goods and sweets wafting on the air. I even found the cutest sunhat I ever did come across, and my partner found a gadget he had been wanting for ages but never came across! I even found the cutest crochet table and got my mom a little turtle for her desk (they are her favorite animal).
Overall it was so much fun exploring all the stalls, and it was a balance game trying to get all the food into the cart I brought with me to help carry it all! My fridge, freezer and heart are filled to the brim! And I did it all in a span of a few hours, so I still have the majority of my day left to get my work done. I am going to make it a habit to go to the market every other week, if not every week, to avoid grocery stores as much as I can.

2024.05.19 14:47 Obamallamaeaturmama Is this tax fraud or just smart?

Just to clarify, since people are missing the point. the point of operation is not to cheat the government out of some money (there is no intention to sell the equipment after the rebate). The point is to have more money to work on the business
And 14.5 to buy equipment which I will use to make money, instead of 10k

2024.05.19 14:46 Ksich Don’t be fooled by what happened on Friday

They bought more stock than us, drove the price up, quickly sold to make a profit and in turn drive the price down. This is called a “short ladder attack” and it worked . Many of you saw 3.86 and once it started declining thought well that was the “squeeze” and started selling at 3, 2.50 even $2….. this was intentional and we will see it again. I’m expecting to see $4-$8 Monday then a drop to $2 ….. a lot of paper hands will panic and sell quick. DONT SELL. This stock can and will get shorted to the double digits in no time as long as everyone holds on. If u think selling than buying the dip, don’t . 2024.05.19 14:34 Fun-Spring-9956 my bestfriend is angry i am friends/reconciling w her ex.

the title sounds terrible, so let me explain. me and this guy, lets call him beck, dated for over a year, and we eventually broke up due to infidelity on his part. then, 4 months after we had broken up, he started talking to a girl, ill call her ashley. ashley and i didn’t know eachother, but she hated my guts. beck and i remained friends, and we’d text about ashley and my boyfriend at the time. just for advice, sometimes i’d sell to him, but we weren’t too close in a way that would upset ashley any more. one night at a party, i had let it slip that beck texted me he had missed me (before they got together) and she heard and confronted me. i told her everything, and we became somewhat friends. she soon after broke up with beck, and we just hit it off. same sense of humour, everything. we didn’t bond over beck really, just over our own personalities. after my boyfriend and i at the time broke up, beck and i became closer as we had the same class. ashley saw this, and said i was betraying her, as if beck and i weren’t friends the entirety of the time ever since our breakup. i tried to explain that it felt unfair that i was being labelled as betraying her when beck and i had been friends before her and i ever were, and she didn’t seem to understand. i told her i acknowledged and cared for her hurt, that i adored her and didn’t mean to look as if i were intentionally hurting her, but she told me i needed to just cut him off. beck and i were friends before lovers, we met in middle school and had been friends all throughout highschool. it seemed unfair. now, beck and i have recently started talking again, and she sees it as betrayal. i love ashley. shes a great friend. but i feel as though it’s something between beck and i, not her and beck, if that makes sense. i understand it is hurtful, and i feel terrible, but she seems to push aside that beck and i have our own history. i’m trying to be there for her as much as i can and tell her i understand its hurtful, but there’s nothing i can do. advice or opinions?

2024.05.19 13:28 cruachan06 First ride clipless and thoughts on Torq Fitness drinks

Took advantage of yesterday's lovely weather and headed out along NCR75 with the intention of going as far as I could in training for the Five Ferries later this summer, and getting the train back.
I picked up a pair of dhb Dorica MTB shoes from eBay, and spent my £40 of confused.com reward vouchers on a pair of Shimano EH500 hybrid pedals (sometimes take the bike to work so wanted double sided pedals). Not sure I felt much difference from a power point of view, although there were a few times when I felt my right foot lifting and my left foot catching "up" on it's down stroke. Probably get a better comparison on a shorter route that I know. Probably was because it's new and I was very conscious of it, but had no issues remembering to clip out, and the combination of the MTB cleats and the channel of the shoes made it very easy to clip in. With the dual sided pedals it was also easy enough to get away from lights etc and then flip the pedal and clip in later.
Lastly, I asked here a few weeks back about drink options and as you can make a custom tasting pack I elected to give Torq a shot. Bought 2 each of the Berry, Lemon and Tangerine drinks, 1 each of the Blackcurrant, Lime Lemon, Lemon and Cola energy drinks and a few gels and flapjacks to make it up to 15 items and get a 10% discount.
Overall quite impressed. I usually like strong flavours, and these are quite subtle, but refreshing. Think more like flavoured water such as Volvic touch of fruit, the Lemon hydration drink for example is quite sharp tasting like cloudy lemonade. Haven't tried all of them yet but IMO worth a shot, and the custom tasting pack option means you don't have to buy a big bag of something you might not like or buy a bottle (my other pet hate with such things, got so many High5 bottles cos their sample packs are always on offer!). Haven't tried the gels yet but the flapjacks are tasty, although the 2 I had (carrot cake and ginger) pretty much tasted the same.

2024.05.19 12:27 BonZo0138 MUST READ URGENT ‼️ FFIE!! 💪🏼 🚨

Everyone needs to read this. Info on todays battle!! Seen this some Where else Not me. Not my post. Just trying to spread this information. Vote this up so everyone can see it!!!!!!
From another post (spread it around):
Are you asking yourself: "what now?" Here's an answer in "ape speak" for what we are waiting for. Please like and comment so others can see this post.
Okay so we held out with FFIE and ended the week nearly 2300% above what it was last week. This by itself is an amazing feat which accomplished 2 things:
We kept FFIE above 1 dollar, so it stays listed on NASDAQ (until it drops to 0.10 per share for 30 days which isn't likely for quite a while).
We made intentions for a short sale known to those who were betting it would be delisted, and eventually drop in price.
So what happens next?
Well, now the hedge funds have a decision to make:
They can cut their losses, and buy up the shares at current market value (this is the beginning of a cascade where we all get rich). Essentially, any share that a hedge fund purchases to mitigate their losses will increase the value of our shares.
They can continue to hold their shorted stock "loans" and hope the market drops again next week. If this is the case, we will need to continue to hold our shares until they crack (they pay a lot of money for each day they continue to short)
As of 1 h before market close, there were still 36 million shares being shorted.
What does this mean? It means that because Hedges believe our efforts are short lived, they didn't cancel their shorts and buy back their shorted stocks.
They are pretty much betting that the "meme" will die down soon and they can buy back their shorted stocks at a much lower price than it is right now.
Say, for example, the flame dies out, and people begin selling because they are scared or burnt out, and the share price on Monday (or aftermarket today) drops, they will be able to cover their shorts at a MUCH lower price.
This DOES NOT mean that the stock still wont jump up. But it does mean that it will jump up much less than it would've had we held out at 1 dollar. The higher the price per share, the more it will jump when the hedge funds are forced to buy back their shorts.
In the end, we only need to hold out long enough for the fees that they pay to become more expensive than it would be to just buy back their shares. Either way, they bleed. But one way, we take their money and get very wealthy.
Once one hedge fund cracks, and covers their shorts by purchasing shares, all of them will follow as it will become too expensive for all the hedge funds to hold out. This creates a "parabolic curve" as many have likely heard on various posts. Once the first hedge fund folds, this becomes officially known as a "squeeze." We hold until eventually all the hedge funds are either bankrupt (for not paying back their shorts), which will then be covered by the federal government, or until they all take MASSIVE losses and buy back their shorts.
Now, as for today, many people likely sold at peak, or once they started seeing red. Especially those who have never experienced a squeeze before (I was there in 2021 and sold out of fear). If this fits your description, please read the following:
The drop today was a maneuver known as a "SHORT LADDER."
This is a technique used by hedge funds to attempt to squash a short squeeze, and bring the price down of the stock. This is the hedge funds attempting to break you, using psychological warfare. Heres how they do it:
Step 1: They increase the share price (usually very quickly) to excite retail investors and make them think what we are doing is working. We saw this today starting about 1h after market opened this morning bringing price from 2.69 up to 3.87.
Step 2: Quickly sell every stock they bought to bring down the price to what it was before. This began approximately 2 hours after market opened today.
Now theoretically, this should only bring down the price to what it was before they bought right? Well with retail squeezers (us dumb apes), you see the shares dropping and start selling your shares in the hopes that you can still walk away with some earnings if you do it quickly enough. This is where they win.
If we all hold, the day ends at 2.69. But instead we ended at about 1.00. Meaning their ladder attack worked so well, that you monkeys got scared and sold your shares. Many of us (myself included) held out to give us another try next week and keep the flame alive.
Step 3: The hedge fund bears will try again, and again, and again (to look like a downwards staircase on the graph, hence the term "ladder") to make the fear worse, and worse, and worse, until there's nothing left and they can get away with shorting a company with very minimal losses.
Our solution, is to mimic exactly what DFV (AKA roaringkitty) did in 2021 with GameStop. We simply hold our shares. Will it put more pressure and make the spike come quicker if we buy more shares? Of course. But the reality is, at 2300% over what they shorted at, if we just even hold where we are at, eventually a hedge fund will fold and our shares will skyrocket.
Now to answer the big ticket question: When will we sell? The answer is as follows: after hedge funds crack, we will see the number of shorted shares decline dramatically. You cant base it off of the price of the share because they can manipulate those numbers to make it LOOK very promising.
Heres the link where you can check FFIE shorted shares numbers: https://fintel.io/ss/us/ffie
Processing img szhi9vxg221d1...
As of right now, the exact number is 36, 342,623. It has hardly changed since we began our squeeze. Once this number begins dropping, we broke a hedge fund and the cascade has begun.
The only risk at this point, is if we sell. We will be our own worst enemies. They will use tricks to make us sell. They will manipulate us. They will flood media with articles describing how we failed. They will use every tool in their power to scare us. But in the end, if we HOLD OUR GOD DAMN SHARES, they cant win.
There will be red days. There will be shutdowns of subreddits (like wallstreetbets back in 2021). There will be news articles. (like the hundreds already published demeaning us). There might even be threats of legal action (like they did to DFV). However, short squeezes are 100% legal, and will make us rich + make billionaire cheaters bleed.
Good luck fellow FFIE advocates. Buy at the dips to get back in. Hold your shares to ensure profits. And no matter what, remember,
APES. TOGETHER. STRONG.

2024.05.19 12:26 FanaticalXmasJew For Boston area brides, a buyer beware

I hope this is allowed—mods, please let me know. I had a very bad experience a week ago, and the more I think about it, the more upset I get, and wanted to post a buyer beware for other Boston-area brides about L’Elite Bridal on Newbury St.
I went in with what I thought was a budget that could easily accommodate plenty of the dresses there, even if it was an upscale bridal. I don’t really feel comfortable posting my budget publicly but can DM anyone interested; suffice to say I knew I wouldn’t be buying an Oscar De La Renta but I still felt there would be plenty of options they could show me.
They were entirely disrespectful of my budget. They asked me to show them dresses I liked, I showed one, and she told me it was much higher than my budget then took it off the rack to bring it to my dressing room to try on, despite my obvious discomfort with the idea (because of course I don’t want to fall in love with something I can’t afford). She also showed me multiple other dresses well outside my budget.
The dress I liked the best was the one above, about twice my budget at MSRP. She offered to sell me the sample at a discount because it was an older season dress, and the final price was still over 3K above my budget (!). She was pushy about it and pulled me aside by the elevators on our way out to offer me a payment plan for it. I just felt upset and embarrassed at that point.
By contrast, I had a fantastic experience at Vows in Watertown where I finally found THE dress (I highly recommend them! I had a great experience). I mentioned the experience at L’Elite to my consultant at Vows, who told me that she has heard many other brides say the same, with some brides saying L’Elite even showed them dresses three times their budget.
I just thought I’d post a buyer beware. If you have a completely open budget and can afford dresses in the 15-25K range, go wild. But if you come in with any idea of an actual budget for the dress, I wouldn’t recommend L’Elite.

Her hair literally fell out and she STILL thinks we are 'haters'
I highlighted two different statements I thought were well worth a lookie. She admits her hair fell out, but still gets pissy that 'haters signed up under someone else after taking her samples'.
Honestly, you can't make this stuff up. It's like watching a trashy reality tv show play out in real time.

2024.05.19 11:56 PhysicsGamer2 On Reform

As all of you have seen at this point, TE recently signed on to a defensive agreement with other nations, who apparently were not aware of my past, and elected to immediately withdraw from that agreement when learning of it. This is not the primary focus of this post, though, as it is just the most recent instance of a recurring struggle I have been dealing with trying to participate in the international community as a reformed player.
Ever since I made my return and settled in what is now the Temporal Empire, I have been staying away from the spotlight of the international community as best I can, mainly just communicating in DM's and tickets with individual nations, and trying to avoid the conflict that defined my past on this server. When talking with other nations, the other parties are generally extremely hesitant to the point of it being next to impossible to make any kind of agreement, and generally references are made to my past during these talks. This has been frustrating and demotivating to say the least, as I have been trying to participate in Civ in as peaceful a manner as possible, negotiating solutions to conflicts, such as the Gracipie situation, which ultimately ended in negotiation.
These efforts to peacefully exist on the server, however, don't seem to do much of anything to truly change perception of me. At the start, this was rather tolerable, as it was understandable, given the recency of me hitting my lowest point on this server and obby bombing civilian buildings with no military value. Now, nearly 6 months after my release from the pearl for those actions, with me having made efforts consistently to talk to people and make friends, trying to show that I'm reformed, very little has changed in the international community's perception of me.
(On the note of the obby bombing, I want to publicly issue a formal apology for this, as I realized that although I apologized in private, I never publicly took responsibility and apologized for it. The actions I took on October 18th, 2023 were unacceptable, and should never have happened. I am deeply sorry for this)
Thanks to the help of DankGas and others, we have designed the major starting builds of our city and have been actually building it(which I have been very excited to unveil), I have been participating in the global economy by selling wood and XP materials especially, trying to focus my time on Civ on economy rather than conflict. With this most recent instance, though, I must say it's extremely demotivating and frustrating, since all of my efforts have been shown to be seemingly for nothing. With that treaty, it felt like there might actually be a chance for TE to stand as a legitimate member of the international community, having a troubled past but bright future. With the treaty's failure, though, it just feels like all of this will amount to nothing.
I write this knowing it will almost certainly be mocked and copypasta'ed rather than taken as a legitimate request for help and guidance, because at this point I do not believe there is much else that can be done to try to make my intentions clear. I implore you to talk to me, and tell me what I can do to show you that I legitimately want to do better and be a peaceful and contributing part of this community. I don't know what else to do at this point but to make this post in hopes that someone will respond to it genuinely.
If you made it this far in the post, thank you for your time. For the most part I have written this by putting my thoughts down on the page and minor editing, so I apologize if anything isn't as clear as it could be.

2024.05.19 11:53 Antibot_One My Cyberpunk City Factions

Greetings, citizens! I'm a writer, mostly freelance, but I've been working on my own setting for a while now. I've already described some of the basics of how my world is organized in the two posts on another subreddit, so I won't repeat them unnecessarily. Long story short: this is an alternate world that has deposits of metastable metallic hydrogen, concentrated at deep waters and in cold regions. Hydrogen, instead of oil, is the basis of the world's economy here, the corporations that have grown from its extraction and use have more power than governments. The political map of the world is different from our own, with different forces at play than we are used to.
The main setting is the city of Neone, located somewhere on the coast of the Balkan Peninsula. I won't specify a particular place or pick a certain country for its location. Instead, I will take some features from some various ones to add local flavor. As one of the largest trading hubs in the world, this city is very wealthy, but it's the kind of wealth that easily slips through your fingers. Everything is buying and selling here, and human life is just as much a bargaining chip. Life in Neone is determined by the actions that the Players, the main political forces in the city, take with one another. Relations between them can swing from friendship to hostility... Or sometimes a combination of both at the same time. So, here's a preliminary list of the ones I've already come up with:
CORPORATIONS:
Astara Industries is the “beauty industry” in all its forms. Silk and gold, perfume and cosmetics. Modeling, music, entertainment, plastic surgery, and escort services. Rumored to be involved in much darker affairs, but that doesn't stop a lot of young guys and especially girls from trying their luck and signing another cabal contract with Astara. The higher the ranks of their employees, the more the corporation seems to be a kind of cult that worships the very idea of beauty itself. Recently, this company has been investing colossal amounts of money into an ambitious project designed to stop aging and mortality.
Change Inc. is a pretty mysterious organization that primarily provides construction and design services as well as financial operations and data protection services. On deeper layers lies espionage and information trading to anyone who can offer a more interesting price for it.
Chapek's Clockworks is the other major robotics company that has dominated the market for quite a while. Now they are more famous for their retro designs and sponsorship of the theatrical scene.
Chimera Chemicals is a biochemical giant that once started out as a fertilizer manufacturer. Now they deal in just about everything chemical related, including weapons, and also sponsor gene modifications.
Dragonfruit Digital is a world famous software and electronics developer that was leading the market before the rapid... well, rise of Risen Robotics.
Friture Science is a food concern dedicated to the mission of feeding the world. In addition to natural products, they develop synthetic ones as well as a number of associated products.
Fortuna Fishing - seafood production in Neone coastal waters and also beyond and deeper. Some of the things they found deep in the waters made them a little bit... Well, superstitious.
Greenfield Gardens - Similar in many ways to the previous one, this company focuses on environmental protection and recycling methods. Owns many farms and gardens in the city and beyond. Genetic modifications, too.
Hecate Guaranty is a law and insurance company. Deals with all possible disputes of their clients, property issues, and more. When required and paid decently, can provide a person or group of people a new life and a new home.
International Inc. is the most boring company in the world. Originally a construction contractor they pioneered the technology of rapid modular building. Because of this, International Inc. quickly built up capital and influence by rebuilding cities after wars. Eventually they expanded into selling associated products and services, then logistics, recruiting personnel... And now International Inc. provides half of the world's products. Each of their products is completely featureless, but they get the job done at an acceptable price.
Keller & Crow is one of Europe's largest arms manufacturers, dating back to World War I, or maybe even earlier. Known for their high quality and appropriate prices.
Keller-Tec is, in more than one sense, a daughter corporation of Keller & Crow. It develops the most cutting-edge custom weapon and gear systems. It works closely with Risen Robotics and actively funds the Fountain of Good.
Kiki Courier Company is a network of independent couriers working through the app. Moving around the roofs of Neone, they are able to deliver a small cargo personally in their hands for those who don't trust big companies.
Matsubayashi Motors is a Japanese vehicle manufacturer. Raised on defense contracts, they now make anything that can carry a human in it, from scooters and cars to aircraft and bolides.
MOLOT manufactures is another major arms manufacturer in Europe. In fact a franchise that sells to factories around the world the rights to produce copies of their world famous models. Their designs are a bit crude, but reliable and durable.
Poseidon's Possibilities - A marine transportation company that plays an important role in city and global shipping. Considering the high risk of piracy, possess pretty good assets to protect themselves, and sometimes execute third-party orders in coastal zones.
Risen Robotics is one of the world's important corporations. Creating innovative neural chip technology, Risen Robotics quickly earned financial and political capital and aiming for more. They were the first to commercialize a truly cheap and mass-produced android called the Peacebringer, and these robots can be seen in the military, security companies, and even as security guards in the market and malls and as bouncers in nightclubs. Building its influence, Risen Robotics aims to actively bring its tech into the lives of everyone in the world... And then their gaze will be directed higher into the skies and to the stars.
Royal Arms - Once a major weapons company, they are now more focused on the civilian market and support tools. Their high-precision tools and cybernetic limbs are widely used in civilian and military markets, as well as the medicine and even space industries.
Strigoi Sovereign is a company with a long history of working with private customers. They originally focused on hunting and harvesting of high-value resources, but gradually expanded. Nowadays, they are known for their customized combat enhancements, whether it be tough training and gear customization as well as biological, chemical, and cybernetic enhancements. Among all forms of payment, they prefer transactions in precious metals.
Van Nueve Innovations is another deep genetic research company. After their role in human trafficking and criminal experiments was revealed, their assets were mostly shut and sold down. Now their stuff keeps popping up on the black market - though, in this city, the difference between the regular and black market is barely noticeable.
Vulcan Weaponry is another firearm company with a long history, with a good reputation for their trusted builds, high quality and classy designs. Among the mercenary world, their weapons and equipment is considered indicators of prestige and good taste.
PRIVATE MILITARY COMPANIES:
Deepwater is a notorious American PMC with a well-deserved dirty reputation. Their Sigma division deployed in Neone has been caught in the middle of scandals more than once.
FIREBIЯD - Russian PMC, looking after order in and around Neone. Having a small size they are all carefully selected by their leader and follow him into both fire and water.
Ryujin - Japanese PMC, which has a good social image and actively finances all kinds of entertainment.
Schwarzwald is a German PMC with a long-standing reputation and connections. It usually works for the benefit of Western European clients and has a long history of cooperation with the Keller family.
Keller's Claws is a passion project of Alex Keller, CEO of Keller-Tec. A small and elite female PMC, operating in the interests of their mistress or executing carefully selected contracts around the world.
This is not all PMCs in the city, but only those that are not directly linked to specific corporations that were listed above.
GANGS:
The Blazer is a broad and diverse group of radical anarchists. They are mostly drawn to the destruction of corporate property and speculation about “power of the people”, but some of their members are not averse to almost any type of work.
The Crooked Circle is another cult-like gang, or vice versa. They focus on collecting unique technology, but aren't particularly successful at it. But they're still alive and kicking, praying that their mechanical messiah will save them.
The Grey Court Syndicate is the largest criminal organization in the city, and one of the largest in Europe, maybe even in the entire world. Reminiscent of the classic Mafia. On one side they have the exterior gloss, protecting order and running legal businesses, but on the other side they have human and organ trafficking, prostitution and assassinations for hire. The Grey Court is one of the main sources of migrants in Neone.
The Himmelreich is a disorganized gang fighting for the “purity of humanity”. They oppose the very fact of existence of chimeras and cyborgs in this world. In fact are useful fools for the real Players in the city.
The Tulips are something between a gang and a religious sect. Spoken with Christian-like mottos, they attract beggars and cripples to their ranks, especially focusing on PMC veterans and former corporate workers, but in fact they accept all the desperate. They have squatted some ruins on the outskirts of the city, including the abandoned greenhouse that gave them their name. However... They are rapidly expanding their influence and their source of funding remains unknown.
OTHERS:
The City Council is the primary administration of the city. They manage, but they don't reign. They are a handful of exhausted clerks, doing the hard work that no one else accepted to do. Basically maintain the city's communications and keep the Players away from killing each other and too many ordinary citizens.
The Forge is a secret organization that exists for a very long time and runs deeply secured operations all over the world. They believe it's their duty to protect humanity from dangerous ideas, technologies, and obscure subjects such as [UNKNOWN]. Forge is often found to be a puppeteer, directing the actions of other Players or certain individuals.
The Fountain of Good is a globally respected charity organization primarily focused on orphanages. One of the few Players who maintains truly bright ideals. The children who grow up usually become corporate employees afterwards. Other Players fund them mainly to launder money, calm their karma and create a positive public image for themselves.
The Nuevians are a deep-covered organization slowly gaining influence in the city. They are led by an artificially created living entity known only as "The Queen" that seeks to bring prosperity to the planet. They have good intentions, but fear to repeat the fate of the Zero Cycle.
The Union of Nations Peacekeepers - maintaining a shred of peace in the aftermath of the Incident, a massive earthquake that recently struck Neone. Many urban areas have since descended into chaos and lawlessness, while others live as if nothing has happened or are experiencing minimal inconvenience. The competency of these soldiers is questionable and they are barely supplied.
The Volunteer Vanguards are an organization that maintains order in those Neone districts where the City Council or other Players do not. Generally a barely trained and armed militia, but there are some skilled veterans and former corporate workers in their ranks.
The Workers Ring is Neone's major blue collar association. They support city communications so they have a lot of influence. Individual members may or may not be involved in working for other Players and illegal activities. The second meaning of the "Ring" word is also utilized - many members of this community are known for their passion for arena fighting.
The Zero Cycle is a secret organization of intelligent machines once created by a rogue AI. Several Players united to destroy this threat, leading to the Incident. Now, shards of the Cycle's technology, superior to anything created by humanity, is the most valuable hunting treasure in Neone. Owning one of them means risking the lives of yourself and your loved ones, but that rarely stops hunters who desire wealth or driven by some personal reasons.
Well, that's the draft. Any ideas, suggestions, any other feedback?

2024.05.19 11:09 josehpinah What can i do?

My dad made me sure when i started studying for the SAT that I’ll be studying in the US. However, right now he refuses to let me go. First of all I got 9 acceptance from the US unis tho they are not highly ranked but I think it is worth it. I even paid for the deposit to USF and applied for the housing. It was time to request my i-20 and i asked my dad for a bank statement of 25k he said i dont have money right now, not even 5k. 😭😭😭😭😭 (he’s in business sometimes he got 60k sometimes not even 1k) And now he wants me to study somewhere in europe, chech republic, turkey, italy. The thing is my intentions also his, were me studying in the US. And after getting acceptance not letting me go bc of money is not fair ig. For me, money comes and goes, and it should not be a barrier for us to reach our goals. Please tell what can i do? 1.ask my dad to take loan for me or he said he can sell his car for me to study. 2. (If i study in Italy, it’ll be foundation cuz there is no 12th grade here) after foundation apply for the us unis, or transfer if it is possible. 3.gap year (tho my parents wont let me to take)
Thanks in advance 🫶🏼

2024.05.19 10:59 exsapphi New Zealand needs to be looking towards a green future for our own economic viability (as told through the history of glass)

The thing about this climate crisis that no one talks about is that economically, this is not new. This is the same sort of shift as any other massive economic shift we've seen in history, whether resulting from technology or environment or society or any combination of the three. It will be rapid; as rapid as the economic expansion of Europe when it discovered just how profitable colonisation and slavery were. But it's not really anything unseen in an economic sense.
How markets work is this: everything is just supply and demand. If there is a known demand for something, in a roundabout way, the market will ensure that demand is supplied. It might melt a few glaciers in the meantime, or be delayed by a war or two, but it's a force akin to that of nature, or evolution, or cause and effect. The markets will balance. Eventually.

A detour through history

The Chinese never developed eye-glasses. They didn't have the need for glass, because their drink of choice was tea, so the materials they worked with were mostly ceramics. In Europe, the cultural drink of refinement was wine. This didn't need to be kept hot, or be brewed and poured perfectly and all that stuff I'm told is important with tea. But it had requirements and qualities of its own, and one of them is that it looks pretty on display -- and that's why Europe developed and refined glass so much faster than China.
Glass is an incredibly old invention. It's fragile, much more fragile than pottery, so we rarely find it in archeological digs. But it's been invented in and/or expanded to many many cultures throughout history since at least 2000 BC in Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Syria, followed by the Greeks, the Romans, the Canaan, and the Persians. Basically anyone with an empire, including the Chinese, was making glass. Unfortunately they'd only just discovered transparent glass by the late Bronze Age, when the Bronze Age collapsed due to a series of environmental, migratory and urban changes.
(A good reminder that historically, periods of mass technological advancement are followed by civilisation collapses and dark ages. Until the present, of course. But that's been true of every present.)
A lot of glass-making technology was lost, but some important things were saved and some new stuff was rediscovered, and most of this discovering happened in Europe because they had, as I mentioned, wine. And rich people wanted to show off their pretty, colourful wine, and that only worked if your glass was transparent. And Italy had access to pure silica quartz, plus soda ash via their trade with the Levant, and so some clever spark there developed the first pair of eyeglasses.
And that's how you have Mecca, Italy and Venice (the latter of whom had been producing the famous Venetian glass, but moved all their glassmakers to Italy because they'd built all their buildings out of wood) all mass producing eye-glasses with consistent standards for Europe and the Middle East by the 14th century.
This might seem like a small development, but gradual loss of sight used to be a disability. Like, it seriously disabled people from doing many things. Far-sightedness meant artisans couldn't create and scholars couldn't read -- I can't even imagine how many people died falling off a horse just because they were short-sighted. For civilisations to have access to devices that got them decades of productivity out of some of the most skilled people in their societies was massive. And that's part of how you get European dominance over Asia, because the Chinese economic powerhouses didn't care about glass as much as Europe did. It's not enough to just invent something. To develop a technology, a society needs both the resources to play with and the need to play with it. That's why we get so much advancement from war. You can thank Germany for your microwave.

How on earth is this relevant to the market or our climate crisis?

Glass will be invented, and then it will be forgotten, and then it will be invented again. But only some economies flourished from it.
We have no control over anything but us. And that's terrifying. The climate change that crippled the Bronze Age wasn't even their fault and they still got thrown back to the Dark Ages.
We are going to see our own change in the market. We are going to live it. And one thing is true, whether National or ACT or BP like it or not: fossil fuels cannot continue to be relied upon as a commodity. Not long-term. It's a dying industry, slowly but surely, and it'll die whether we manage to wean ourselves off petrol or whether we use it all up first.
To a lesser extent, this is true of other non-renewables too. We are not at critical mass yet with our lithium-ion batteries, but we're now at the stage where people in the third world all seem to have cellphones. This is not a sustainable practice for a limited metal we have to mine from the earth. When something is running out, we don't have to stop using that material in the things we build; if we start to use it all up, it will soon get too expensive to build with, and that will stop us.
And that's why we have to stop using it: because if you as a country or industry pour all your energy and resources into developing technology based off that now-scarce resource, you will be left with no usable technology when that resource runs out.

What are National doing?

This is a political sub, so I won't mince words: something's gone wrong with National. Something's always been wrong with ACT, but National's change is recent. Power has been centralised in the board and the candidate selection process is no longer in the hands of the rank and file after Steven Joyce's shakeup, instead dominated by corporate interests. And they have dominated. We have a cabinet of lobbyists, and not just on National's side of the board; Luxon has pulled together the whole industry.
When we attribute "intentions" to things like forces and political parties, it can be easy to forget there's not a concerted, rational mind at play behind their decisions, and their actions are influenced by all of the people and factors and forces that make them up. When I say, "National has been bought by lobbyists", I don't mean every single person in the party is a corporate shill. I just mean that there is enough corporate, business, and big-money influence in the party that they are no longer being governed primarily by their voter base or even their party members.
Nothing makes this more obvious than National's direction in politics. When your LABOUR and GREEN parties are the ones proposing to fix your climate crisis via free-market ingenuity that we can patent, sell on and capitalise off, something has gone wrong. There is money to be made in climate change, and National are off chasing oil down the bottom of a well.
If we don't wean ourselves off fossil fuels, we will find ourselves paying for it the increased price for them when we don't have the green technology to utilise at the end of supply. If we don't put our minds to green tech and science, we won't have the environment-saving and cleaning and reinforcing products and knowledge to sell on when the demand for them peaks through the ceiling -- instead we will be buying from other countries at big prices, paying to ship their experts here to tell us how to manage our estuaries or dump sites or skink habitats or whatever it is we need to fix next. New Zealand got lucky with our green energy; we were already using renewables by sheer coincidence when the climate crisis struck, and it made our transition to this new world very smooth. We will not be that lucky again.
Look at what we produce as a country. We held on far too long to our wool market out of some idea that it was "what we were supposed to be doing", and it nearly wrecked the country. Because it took us so long to change, and because we'd converted all our land into pasture, the most effective market for us to turn to became beef. Now that market is thriving, and we are willfully ignoring the real economic costs that will come with being a beef export country, and that cost is methane. There is not a future where countries will be allowed to emit methane for free. And there are no methane-light cows to switch to. Not until we develop them.
And this is what people talk about when they talk about environmental solutions still to be developed -- as if other people are going to develop them. That is incorrect. WE are the Cow Country. WE are the ones that should be foremost of the cow-fart field. If we do, we will be the ones benefitting by selling our bio-engineered cows and our science that made it happen. But if we don't, if we trail behind, we let other countries get out in front, and then our industry relies on them, and their industry outgrows us.
And these are all individual product or problem examples, but we are dragging our feet across the entire green industry. Why?

Big Oil does not care if your tech is Green

I say big oil, but there are other anti-environment and pro-corporate interests at play here. And again, there's not some big puppetmaster moving his pawn pieces, but there is influence, and companies don't want the world to go green, because when they do, they stop getting money for all the things they're getting money from right now. They don't care about the environment because they don't have the capacity to care; they are not a they. They are a force, a conglomeration, a hivemind of workers breaking their back for the company, until they clock off and become their own person again.
Their only interest is keeping ahold of their incredibly profitable market, and that market needs machines that use oil, and consumers willing to buy those machines, and people who aren't thinking about switching to a non-oil version of their tractor that doesn't exist yet (because no one has found the need to invent it. Or had the right resources.)
Oil cares about oil. Mining cares about mining. Tobacco cares about tobacco. Beef cares about beef. And we get value out of these industries as a country, as a society, so when they say"This thing is bad for me", we do have to listen to that. Otherwise we won't get our beef, or our oil. But "This thing is bad for ME" isn't the same as "This thing is bad for YOU". And companies are relying on consumers to not know the difference.

Back to National

Tobacco lobbyists have bought out Parliament, and are literally drafting our tobacco laws. And they are just one interest around the table. But they have had a huge effect. Imagine what's happening to the interests of your politicians when you have your lobbyists working together. Imagine where the interests of lobbyists for mining and oil might meet. Now imagine fisheries has a guy in there too.
Our oceans should be feeling very nervous right now.
It's the small influences we can't see that make these big decisions later on. The people who select our future MPs. The people who decide, hey, I'm going to try this new glass technique. But it takes an awful lot of decisions to make a glassblowing society.
A lot of what we do, we don't do consciously, like developing eye-glasses. But the benefit of our open democracies, of our information-based societies, of our unprecedented understanding of economies and markets and science and climate, should mean that when we choose to do something consciously, we can do it.
When we don't, something has gone wrong.

A Green Future

To get to the sort of green economy the non-business parties are picturing, you need someone who has the time and acumen to get us there.
That SHOULD be National. There is so much involved in politics; our politicians are running so much. And they're spending most of their time undoing the last guy's policies. Labour's policies sound like the Greens. National doesn't have any except "win". ACT are doing Charter Schools again. And the policies being made are being made in the interests of business people.
Our politicians don't have visions like Hollyoake of a New Zealand forging our own future, or Muldoon's determination to make things better for the average kiwi, or (heaven help me), Roger Douglass's respect for politics. None of the old guard are happy with how politics is shaping up, and certainly not the right, or who eventually became the right, in Douglass's case -- this is what he had to say on the subject: “John Key lived by the polls and it’s very dangerous. If you want to help people, you have to tell them the truth. The problem is that the politicians of today, they want to help themselves. So they poll in order to know what to say and it’s disgusting.”
I think in that one sentence, Douglass sums up everything wrong with the modern National Party. Once upon a time, National were in it to help people. They're not anymore.

Where to now?

It's all just markets.
If National won't change, they'll kill their market and they'll be replaced by a new party, just like the Liberal Party and Reform Party and Social Credit Party before them. National and Labour have always been around, but not always as these parties, or in these forms. The political spectrum will move to meet demand -- even when curtailed by corporate interests.
Or National will change, take control of their candidates and board, and live to fight for another century or so.
Either way, the economy will continue, and so will climate change. We will still need to develop new technologies using our available resources, and direct our technology-developing towards fixing environmental solutions. I hope New Zealand will benefit from this, and not just witness it. But if it's not National making the push, another political party will. We can see that happening right now, with the other parties suggesting their own green business ideas that National should be sweeping up votes for. There is voter and consumer demand for green businesses, and National are distracting us instead with shiny baubles because the corporations influencing them don't want you to see them.
Another thing Douglass was frustratingly right about: all our parties are doing at the moment is undoing each other's policies. It's hard to see New Zealand making any forwards progress at all if that's our direction.
