i (20) want to start my studies again.i don't have any qualifications. i tried going through old grade books but I am having trouble with them..most of the words don't make sense and the questions in chapter are different from the one in past paper(when i study from grade, before moving to another i try solving some questions from past papesample papers)
i don't have enough to pay for school again. i am trying to look for some free online source but there are way many and i don't know which one should I chose. even I don't know how what my current level is. i just know some bits of topics here and there.
because of some mental health issue i took a long break(the last time I "studied" was 6 years ago). and I'm trying to get myself together.
edit - my main focus is maths. apart from maths, it's science (biology and chemistry to be specific), english grammar,polity and economics

Hello everyone, I'm gonna start this off by saying thanks to anybody who will read this as it will be a long one, and anybody willing to offer me any advice.
PS. This post started as a post where I was asking for college advice, but as I wrote more I realized any advice would be really helpful so I changed the title a bit, Thanks in advance again!

To get to the point, I currently live in Croatia and just turned 19 a couple of months ago and a time has come when I am again thinking about college. Some background on me, from when I was very little I was always interested in engineering and art, it all started when a teacher of mine in the 5th grade of primary school introduced me to programming and robotics. From then on I was in love with everything to do with electronics, robotics, mechanics programming, and fundamental sciences, maybe even math itself, but that's beside the point. During those years the passion for all of that really grew. I went to countless robotics competitions during my time at school there and even won lots of prizes. One time I almost came to world-level competitions but sadly missed the first place by a point. When I was home I sadly didn't have much equipment for any of these interests except a computer. It seemed limitless what I could do with it, whatever I wanted to do I could make it. It's not like electronics where as a kid getting parts was difficult except from old salvaged electronic devices. I could learn and make whatever I wanted, as long as the old family computer could run it. So I started learning a lot about computers during these times like basic algorithms and some basic games random Python scripts etc. In terms of computers, I was no genius, but for the age, I'm grateful I took the time to learn even the basics of it. Other than that I was a somewhat weird kid because I couldn't really take picking off some classmates as a joke and got annoyed at it quickly when they started interrupting me while I was drawing ( My dad was an artist in his youth so I picked that up from him, been scribbling every day in primary school when class was either boring or some kind of recess ) but even though they were picking on me, I to this day still really don't mind them, we were a pretty close class at the end of the day. And that's how most of my primary school went by, me being social with only a few friends and my informatics teacher as well. Other than that I was pretty sad during those years, I couldn't understand people and was contemplating the meaning of life as well, and that combined with me inheriting some stubbornness from mom, she and I were always fighting for homework, screentime, etc. Right now we are in a very good relationship so I'm greatful for that aswell. Seeing how I didnt really talk outside of school to many people expect a few friends ( I do live in a small village so if they were the same age as me they were in my class ) i basicly spent most of my time while not staying after school in a computer club we had for few hours every couple of days a week, i was cooped upped inside my house, playing with legos, being with grandparents or my cousins or being on computer and doing some programing, scripting, photoshoping and other things you can reasonably excect a child to do. And so passed most of my primary school.
When time came to plan for highschool, I originaly wanted to go to art school, but was quickly turned down by my mother because she thought it wasnt a smart idea. Personaly didn't like it at first, but she is a smart woman so in time i understood. Basicly other then liking to draw and paint, I wanted to go there bacause my best friend from class was going there and he also wanted me to come along. ( Funny how me the least popular guy and the youngest guy in class and he the most popular guy in class while also being the oldest were best friends, but thats a story for another day ) As my mom turned down my suggestion for art school she suggested I go to a school for a Mechatronics Technician. I didnt not like the idea as well I loved everything related to it. Other than that another option was Computer Technician ( basicly a programming oriented path ) but I decided mechatronics because i said to myself i can learn programing at home because the only tools i need are a computer, and mechanics, electronics and robotics is something I dont have at home so it will be really cool to learn all of that here and so, highschool started.
Oh how fast has the reality come crashing down as I understood what the whole mess of the education system actualy was. Most of the classes didnt have any equipment to actualy do anything practical, the other small portion that did the rest lf the 95% of class didnt understand anything so we couldnt do much or what was the more often scenario is that the proffesors just didnt really care at all so we would come to class and do absolutly nothing, like literaly nothing except waiting for the bell to ring. After i realised that I just started not coming to school most quite a bit. Mostly was not comming on fridays, some wednesdays etc most of the times I was actualy abit sick, but every time i was sick i exadurated it so my mom would let me stay home. Even though i was missing quite a bit of classes, if a class had something to do with math or logical thinking ( which most were ) i would usualy either be best at it in the class or almost the best for the pure reason I was actualy really interested and loved all the cool engineering stuff. On the other side if a subject was about 0 logic, full random name memorisation like the croatian literature class, I was almost if not the worst in class managing just barely to scrape by. Other than that there was one proffesor who I admired so much for his style of teaching, as he tought me so much during the only 2 years he lectured me ( my fourth year of highschool he was out because pention ). In simply half a year we went from 0 knowledge to designing, printing, creating and soldering a whole circuit on a pcb, I was always there for his classes. On the other time we were doing something else, he always had some cool stuff prepared when i was finished with work early, he was a great guy and still respect him alot. Other than that i was really disapointed how there existed zero after school activities that i could do that had to do anything with electronic, mechanics, robotics or programing.
On the side of my social life, the summer just before starting highschool I realised this was a great opportunity to redeem myself as i really didnt want to get picked on like in primary school. So what other kind of persona would somebody come up in this situation than one being supported by my pride itself, other than that i was basicly a "chameleon" aka adapting to every person around me which was probably the reason i made some friends but it usualy tired me out completly. And so it started really great actualy, nobody was picking on me, i was socialising ( only inside of my class usualy, other than the people who went to this town from my village that i already knew, but it was a big step up for me ) and learned how to shrug of others banter by pretending it didnt effect me. It was definitly in a better possition then primary school alright, but i did realise alot of people just moving away sometimes because of how i just increased pridefulness as i got more vulnerable. I think i was able to keep my pride to just below some overflowing point as i still managed to make a few friends.
And so some time passed, at home watching more videos about everything to do with engineering, getting a 3d printer and messing with it, programing some more and even trying to learn some business, economy and more about money. I even developed a game for the school as some special thing I got by talking to a teacher of mine. Other than that at the third year, thanks to a profesor i was able to get in touch with a software development company and was able to secure an internship for basicly the whole summer, which was a blast. I learned so much new things that opened doors to alot more things. After that i focused my random "Jack of all trades" learning to be mostly focused on modern used technologies, and the needs of possible job recruiters, and well it in general. That is the point i feel i truly started learning proper programing.
More on my development of pride, in highschool and in primary school i was actualy praised quite alot and being actualy abit good at something maybe was the thing that allowed me to get even some friends by being prideful. We can call that being lucky as the stars alligned, but anyways. During those years i also had two experiences with me falling in love for the first time. The first one didnt last more than a 4ish months maybe, it was basicly a crush thing that ended in a broken heart, but o boy it was a good waking called. I wonder what would happen to me without this realisation. Then the next one lasted basicly 7-8ish months in the 4th year of highschool, and this one was much more complicated and longer, but after it i learned quite a new few things. These two things really awoken me to who i am today, as i try to live each day with as much virtue as I can. I threw out the pride out of the window, and dont really care too much of somebodies bad opinions on me, if there are currently any. I came to terms with alot of things and am just able to accept things for what they are, without judgment.
As im writing this its quite late and am tired so sorry for bad grammar i want to shorten this abit. Basicly my whole life i loved scientists, engineers and the idea of colledge. Was always dreaming of becomingba "great scientist" like albert einstein or nikola tesla but the older i got, the more things i learned, the more that dream of going to colledge got shattered by reality. As i realised the giant flaws in the education system, after learning about money and realising colledges are just big businesses trying to earn alot of money, and that that is their main motivation, combines with seeing that scientists basicly to get any money and recognition these days need to literaly hop from trend to trend, research what is "in" currently or well no bread on the table just made the academia route of my life shatter before my eyes. Seeing how i knew quite abit computers i thought i could atleast land something, but after seeing people who were much longer in the industry praise me for a impressive knowledge on alot of fields and my ability to almost instantly grasp any concept thrown at me, i actualy got a job. Well this was how I decided to start working immediatly instead of going to colledge. After weighing the options combined with the additional knowledge i got about the job market, this was an obvious choice. I believe that my key to being objective is me being realistic, so sadly i know am not some do it all genious and know i need to rely on whatever i have to use as leverage to enhance my life, so learning from Warren Buffet that out of everything I got, my time was my biggest asset. Simply being young with the above average skills i have, I believe i have a reasonably good chance to have a virtous and fulfiling life.
But i still have that burning flame in my chest, i still love the idea i had of colledge, of becoming a scientist, an engineer. I tried looking for ways to convince myself otherwise and see that i was actualy wrong about it all, but each time i look, more and more i realise my initial assumptions were right. The world is slowly moving away from official education like colledges as everything can be learnt online, because of ai the next few years are going to be revolutionary in all of these fields so either the colledge courses are going to be very outdated or just some concept of a job will not simply be needed as a diffrent one apears. The posibilities and their volatility is just so high that i dont feel even 1% safe actualy going to colledge, seeing how devoting like 5 years to it will mean loosing the onlx advantage i can use, and that is me starting out young. And as a bonus because i have a job i actualy have more time than colledge to persume my other interest like mechanics and electronics as well as actualy funds.
Thanks for reading all of this, I can trust it was quite a journey reading everything i written basicly half asleep but i hope you were able to understand everything. Im really confused what to do, as I love both options but knowing that one has a much better chance of being useful to me than the other. Any advice you can give me will be greatly appriciated, be it about college like is there an actualy good colledge in europe thats is worth it in my place, or general life stuff, about work etc. Once again I cannot thank you enough for reading this and helping me. Just a quick warning Iā€™m putting it all out here about our friendship, i just want to tell the truth.
I 19f had a messy relationship with my ex best friend who Iā€™ll call Tina because she was tiny.
We met in our 7th grade math class after she was having a panic attack because of multiple things going on in her life. I comforted her and helped her escape a toxic friendship and introduced her to my group of friends. We called every night and gave each other ther the support we both needed as I was sheltered and new to everything and she was coming out of some serious mental tolls.
I was there for her even though she wasnā€™t always for me. I helped her through when her dad nearly died and his entire personality changed, when her mom became a single mother and Tina felt the need to step up as the other parent, and fully supported her in everything she did.
Everything was great until we hit high school. She demanded we talked everyday at school and at least an hour on the phone. I donā€™t mean to say she told me outright but she definitely forced my hand to keep the friendship. She would guilt trip me with fake panic attacks and swear I was being terrible to her. She also pretty much had to approve every friend I had not to mention boyfriends. The first two, granted, were asses to say the least. However, sheā€™d look for reasons for me not to explore friendships outside of our little group.
I talked to several friends about how much this time affected my grades, love life, and other friendships and they all said the same thing, I went from cheerful and playful, to scared and there being no light in my eyes when Tina was around.
A couple years into high school I met my now boyfriend and we hit it off big time. She did everything to chase him away and even convinced me to break things off. Luckily he and I never grew apart and decided that weā€™d try again, but help make each other better and to keep a more open line of communication.
She tried to use the same tactic on my other friend from theater but didnā€™t succeed.
To add insult to injury, I wrote a childrenā€™s book and it went to a national competition and all she cared about is that she became a published author in a poetry book before I even started binding my book. I told her about my success in the hallway of a hotel while my club members celebrated all our national placements and all she had to say, ā€œthatā€™s cool but I won that poetry contest and Iā€™m published now! Iā€™m getting copies of the book on Saturday, arenā€™t you proud of me!ā€
When I confronted her about this, she said she was also proud of me but she felt I was being selfish. I won a trip to Florida and get to present the book I worked so hard on. But apparently, thatā€™s not as important.
Now for the big conflict, in the summer of 2023, I left my parents house the night before my college orientation. Iā€™ll do a separate story on that. The point is, I left.
She herself yes was there for me holding me as I cried about leaving my sister and helping me but what I need to couch surf for a while.
She had a plan, move me from the campus I was registered for to the one she was going to and have me split door-dash money with her and hopefully not have to live out of her car. She also wanted me to pull a hearty loan from the bank her mom worked for to pay for all this. I personally cannot do that as Iā€™m in the middle of getting a name change and it was hard for me to even get a driving permit.
A couple months pass and the house I had stayed at for that time kicked me out. From the stress of college and getting a job Iā€™ll admit, I wasnā€™t the nicest.
The day before I was told I needed to find another place to stay I got a call from Tina. She called me crying because she was worried I was going to commit suicide and I talked to her about my feelings and future. How I have so much left to do and see. Including marrying the man I love, my boyfriend. She cried about that and said I should have listened to her. I pretty much ignored it as we talked about it serval times.
I was served my eviction notice, apologized to my friends parents, and began packing my things. I get a FaceTime from her and Iā€™m thinking that my best friend might have some words of comfort or something.
I answer the call and with my friend in the back, she starts in on me saying that no matter what, I never listen. I only donā€™t when it happens that I canā€™t or it goes against my wishes and boundaries Iā€™ve set. She went on yelling after what seemed like hours as I zoned out and packed with shaky hands and blurry eyes. I couldnā€™t take it anymore so I hung up with saying, ā€œwe can talk about this when Iā€™m sure where my next meal is coming from and Iā€™m not scared Iā€™ll be on the streets.ā€
From what my friend told me she blocked me immediately and never wanted to speak to me again. Sheā€™s blocked me everywhere even tiktok and it makes me feel bad.
Itā€™s been months and Iā€™ve been told that Iā€™m not the a-hole however, I think I need an outside opinion.

Hello everyone,
I am hoping to apply for US masters programs in quantitative economics. I am trying to find out what I can do to improve my chances at getting admission in a good program. I need some advice on the issue of potentially retaking some math coursework.
I graduated with a BS in economics from a good US public university. My big source of anxiety is that I did poorly in my 4th and 5th semesters due to difficult personal and family circumstances. In particular, I got Cs in Calc 3 (multivariable) and Linear Algebra, which are required coursework for all the econ masters programs I've seen. I managed to pull my GPA back up to a 3.5 with good grades in econ classes in the remaining semesters, but I am really stressing out because of my poor performance in those two critical math classes.
I would really like some advice on whether it would be worth it to enroll in Calc 3 and Linear Algebra at a local or online accredited community college. If I get As in those classes, will universities be able to overlook the Cs from my undergraduate education? I would really appreciate any guidance or input on this matter. Thanks.

Even before the school year start, alam ko na, na hindi gumagawa ng homework itong si junel, at hindi rin nagsasagot ng seatworks, dahil naging student ko cya sa summer class (itong summer class ay hindi pra sa mga failed na learners, alam mo na kung ano yan.) Alam din ito ng kanyang naging class adviser, kasi dati cya nitong math teacher, kaya i advise him na gawin na lang yung mga written output sa school bago cya umuwi, kasi di naman cya gumagawa sa bahay. Ang strategy ko sa written output sa klase ko ay, binibigay ko ito, BEFORE ko simulan ang topics ko for the week. Para magkaroon na ng idea ang learners ko sa ano ang dapat nila matutunan sa topic namin, at mabigyan cla ng maraming time to answer it. I know, i know, puwede ito ma-abuso ng mga learners na madadaya, at i know, marami sila. But in my head, im doing it for those learners WHO WANT TO LEARN, yung interisado talaga na matutunan ung subject ko. Para kasi sa akin, at the end of the day, dapat nilalaban ko ung interest nung mga learners na gusto matuto sa tamang paraan, konti man sila, pero knowing na meron paring tulad nila, ay enough na para di ko sila sukuan. Going back to ate lyny. Well, si junel sa unang 2 grading ay pumapasa pa (barely, 75), pero pagdating ng 3rd grading, aun na, tuluyan na cyang nagfail, hindi na cya nagsstay ng hapon to do his written outputs, di na cya naglelecture or recite, lagi na lang cya nagdradrawing, at even sa by pair performance task, di na cya nagpaparticipate. Nagschedule ako ng remedial class for him, hindi cya dumadating, i gave him remedial activities, hindi niya ginagawa. She told me na, kung pwede ay ipadala ko ung mga remedial activities sa kanya, cya na daw tutulong kay junel, sabi ko naman, at kung un ung gusto niya, ay cge lang, pero pag may tanong, o kailangan ng tulong, mag-sabi (ito ang lagi ko cnsabi sa lahat ng learners ko na nagdedecide na magremedial activities, instead na unattend ng remedial class, dahil alam ko na, may mga gawain ang subject ko na kailangan talaga ng matinding paliwanagan, lalo na kapag hindi ka inclined sa math.) So i did, i sent her the soft copies of remedial activities, even some learning materials, na pwede niya gamitin, pag nireview na niya ung topic kay junel. I also told her na they dont have to print na activities, kopyahin na lang sa papel, at doon na din sagutan, copy and then answer as they say. Also, my only request is, ichecheck ko lang ung activities kapag kumpleto ang sagot at kinopya ang lahat ng activities. Ito naman ay for my convenience, pra isang upuan lang lahat ng pagcheck ko at para mabasa ko kung bakit un ang naisip niya na sagot (baka kasi mali ung nakopya niya kaya, iba din ung sagot niya, so i would know, kung kailangan ko iconsider.) The activities are MOSTLY MULTIPLE CHOICE activities 1-10, and few performance task. Strict ako sa performance task, kasi dito ko talaga makikita kung naintindihan ng learners ko ung topic namin. Kaya, pag alam ko na mali ung sagot, pinapaulit ko, hanggang tumama. So, i told ate lyny ang deadline ng remedial activities. That time, meron pa si junel na 8 weeks para magawa ung remedial activities (about 8 multiple choice activities and 6 performance tasks, alam ko marami, pero kaya naman yan, kasi per topic ung performance task, kaya simple lang din ang mga sagot at dapat gawin as evidence ng sagot, like, Justify in 2-3 sentence, 1 worded problem answer in complete solution, create 1 worded problem then answer, and the like.) I reminded my remedial learners, specially those na pinili na mag-remedial activity na lang, na kung matapos nila ng mas maaga sa deadline ang mga activities, ipasa na agad, pra makita ko kung my kulang o mali, so that, i could tell it to them, and still have time para kumpletuhin, at kung mali, pwede ko maidiscuss sa kanila ung mali nila, and again, have time to correct it. How i remind my students, you might ask? Sinasabi ko ito, every after class namin, maging f2f, or online class man ito. I PM them to their fb messenger accnts, once a week, nung mejo months pa b4 the deadline, pero ung 2 weeks na lang, 1 message them once a day. I message their class advisers, to post the reminder to their class gc and to their pta class gc. Having said this, dinaig ko na ang mga telecommunication company (remind pag walang load, at sa mga promo) sa pagremind sa kanila. Ayaw ko kasi masabihan na nalimutan nila, o kaya, hindi nila alam, kaya ginawa ko lahat ng means to remind them. So, 2 weeks before the deadline, itong si junel ay nagpasa ng kanyang remedial activities, pero ito ay printed na copy ng mga activities, sabi ko sa kanya, copy and then answer lahat ng activities, pinakita ko sa kanya ung instruction na cnend ko kay mama niya at ung isa sa mga reminder messages na cnend ko din ky mama niya, na may nakalagay na copy and then answer. Umalis si junel, pero to make sure na ssbhin niya kay mama niya, nagmessage din ako sa mama niya. 2 days before the deadline, itong si junel ay nagpasa ulit, this time naka hand written na, kaya sabi ko sa kanya, ichecheck ko kung kumpleto, at kung tama ung answer sa pt, then kapag my kulang o mali, magmemessage ako, para kunin niya kinabukasan, at maayos pa. So, my nakita akong kulang at mali, i send the info right away (same day). Gabi ko na nasesend yung info, kasi ginagabi na din ako sa pagchecheck (6 teaching hours, 2 clerical/admin work hou1 hour lunch break. So u see, pag nagremedial class ako, or nagcheck ng remedial activities, lalagpas na ako sa 8 working hours). Like gabing gabi, around 9pm. Ayaw ko kasi maguwi ng work sa bahay, dahil ayaw kong isipin ng mga neighbor ko na kapag nasa bahay ako, nagwowork parin ako. Ayaw ko din kasi na maglakas loob sila na kausapin ako about work or magpasa ng kung ano ano kapag nasa bahay ako. Pag nasa bahay ako, nanay ako ng anak ko, kung kakausapin ako sa bahay, it should be anything, basta walang kinalaman sa trabaho, at ganun din naman ako pag sa school, pag andoon ako, kausapin mo ako about work, not anything outside it. Ayaw ko din kasi kalakihan ng anak ko na nagtratrabaho ako sa bahay. Pag nasa bahay kami, nanay niya ako, at nasa kanya ang focus ko. The following day, around uwian ng hapon, hinihintay ko parin si junel na kunin ung activity niya, gabi na, tapos na ako magremedial class at magcheck, wala parin kumukuha. Kaya the following day, araw ng deadline, pinuntahan ko na cya, pra ibigay sa kanya, and i told him, kung magpapasa cya hihintayin ko ung ipapasa niya na kumpleto at tama, hanggang 5pm. Tinanong ko din cya, bakit di niya kinukuha, sabi niya, di daw niya alam, mejo nag-panting ung tenga ko, pero dahil my gagawin pa ako, sabi ko na lang, basta ipasa niya, hihintayin ko. So 5pm came, nagpasa nga cya, pero, walang nabago, walang madagdag at walang nabawas. So, sabi ko , wala naman nagbago, so i told him kung ano ung kulang at ano ung mali, and i told him, hindi ako uuwi hanggang di niya naipapasa yun ng kumpleto at tama (during that time, my mga kasama na cya na classmate niya na nagpapasa, at marami din naman cla na hinintay ko hanggang maging kumpleto at tama ung sagot.) Ung next na pagpasa niya (4 time), kumpleto naman na ung mga kulang, pero mali parin ung sagot sa pt. Its already late, around 7pm, kaya cnabi ko sa kanya, "i cannot wait any longer, hinihintay na ako ni bibi ___." (Kilala niya ang baby ko, kc nga neighbors kami.) And i ask him, anong gusto niya mangyari from here, kasi di ko na siya pwede hintayin. And he told me, gusto pa niya magpasa, at kung pwede ko cya pagbigyan kinabukasan, pumayag na lang ako, but i told him, pasa sa akin, before recess, kung pwede pag pasok niya ng morning, dahil my meeting ako by 9am (9:30am-recess). Again, hindi lang cya ang pinagbigyan ko magpasa, may ilang student din na nakiusap, at lahat sila pinagbigyan ko. So the following days came, and 9am came, walang nagpapasa. So my meeting started and ended, pag punta ko sa lamesa ko andoon ang ilan sa mga coteachers ko and they told me, my mga student na hinahanap ako at may pinasa. So tinanggap ko na lang, baka kasi nagpasa before recess o kaya during recess. Upon checking the submitted activities, wala parin doon ung kay junel, at hindi lang naman cya ang wala doon. So, lunchbreak came, my mga student na dumating at nagpapasa, i ask them kung bakit di nila pinasa, di daw nila naisip na iwan doon sa mga teachers, nagtanong lang daw cla, given na alam nila may mga teachers doon sa lamesa ko, tinanggap ko na lang, reason: kasi they still have the intention to pass sa oras na cnabi ko. When junel came, tinanong ko cya, bakit di niya pinasa kanina, at ang sagot niya, "wala po kasi teacher dito kanina." So tinanong ko ung coteacher ko, kung umalis cya, sabi niya, hindi cya umalis, umalis lang cya nung dumating na ako. So, tinanong ko ulit siya, di na cya sumagot, so i told him, hindi ko na matatanggap kung ano ung ipapasa niya. Reason: nagsinungaling siya at wala cyang intension na magpasa on time. Sabi ko na lang, ipapamessage ko na lang sa adviser mo si mama mo, kung need mo magsummer classes. Umalis na ung bata. Afternoon came, may meeting nanaman ako, so nilagay ko sa pinto ng office kung saan ako naglalamesa na, meeting on going, come back later. Ung hapon na un, wala na akong inaasahan na magpapasa. Ung last person na magpapasa sa akin,ay 5pm pa ang dating, nakiusap un earlier in the morning, dahil di pa daw cya tapos, at kakausapin daw niya ko ulit para magtanong, pumayag ako. Reason: asked for extension earlier, and express his intention for help. After ng meeting, nagmessage sa akin ung adviser, with a forwarded message from ate lyny, asking bakit di ko tinanggap ung pinasa ni junel niya, stating ung reason ni junel. I told the class adviser, na totoo un, at kung bakit. Sabi ng class adviser, ano daw ssbhin niya doon kay ate lyny, and i told her, kung gusto ako kausapin, puntahan lang ako dito sa school. So the day ended. The following day, kinausap ako ng isang coteacher ko, telling me na itong so ate lyny, around 5pm the previous day, ay nagbubunganga sa labas ng school, telling everyone that would listen to her na nawawala daw ung anak niya, hindi pa daw umuuwi, at dahil daw hindi ko tinanggap ung pinasa ng anak niya. Again, marami din nakiusap sa akin ng ganito, at pumayag din ako. Before they leave, humingi ng sorry si ate lyny, sabi niya marami daw cya nabunganga the previous day kasi daw sabay sabay ung dating ng balita sa kanya, my prob din daw sa school ung anak niya na may autism tapos they need money para ipa theraphy ung anak niya, masyado daw malaki ung pera, tapos sumabay pa ung hindi daw tinanggap ung pinasa ni junel, kaya daw kung saan saan daw cya nakapagbunganga, to the point na my kinausap daw cya na principal, asking kung pwede ba daw ung ginawa ko, then sabi daw nung principal, kausapin daw muna ako. Frustrated daw talaga cya the previous day. Naawa ako sa kanya, i feel her eh.. Isa lang niya, dalawa alaga niya, and as a teacher, i know how challenging ang pag-aalaga ng batang may autism at batang nagbibinata. So i just told her, lilipas din ung mga problema, everyone have their bad days, ang mahalaga we learned from them and try harder not to do it again. She left, i send her the activities. And then the afternoon came, 1 of my coteachers came (isa sa mga nakaupo sa lamesa ko the previous day), asking about mr. Albert (a different story), so i told him the story about mr. Albert, and sabi niya, my kinukwento kasi ung bakla (1 of my coteacher na, you know, bakla nga, dont worry, he knows it, and very proud about it.), my parent daw na nagpunta sa office ng coordinating principal (big boss ng mga principal sa isang district) at nirereklamo ako yesterday, nagpapasa daw ako ng "project" tapos nung ipapasa na, hindi daw ako makita, at nung nakita ako sa ibang oras, ayaw ko na tanggapin. And then it hit me, si ate lyny ung tinutukoy niya, so i asked, sino nagsabi sa bakla?, ung friend daw niya na principal, so i asked again, paano nalaman ni friend niya na principal, and it turned out, ito palang si ate lyny, ay nagrant rant sa harap ng coordinating principal habang siya ay nasa meeting with the other principals. So.. Aun na nga, ung cnsabi ni ate lyny na nakausap niya na principal ay si coordinating principal. So.. Im hurt.. She did all of this ng hindi niya alam ang tunay na kuwento. Pakiramdam ko, naloko ako. Naawa pa ako. Ang totoo pala ay, sobra sobra ung ginawa niya. Iniskandalo niya ako. Pero, kahit ganito ginawa niya. Hurt lang ako, pero di ako galit. Naawa parin ako. Hindi bago sa akin ung mga parent na galit kapag di ko pinapasa ung mga learner nila. I dont take it personally, trabaho lang. Pero pakiramdam ko, personal sa akin itong ginawa ni ate lyny. Hindi ko alam kung paano ako makakamove on sa ginawa niya. Sinabi ko na din sa helper ko na, huwag ng palalapitin ung anak ko sa kanila, sa buong household niya. Ganun ito ka-personal. Lesson. May mga teacher na ginagawa ng maayos ang trabaho nila. Malayo ang nararating ng taong mapagkumbaba. Sabi nga ni MS. RACHELL, "stop, breath slowly, in and out, stop, breath slowy, theres no need to shout, you will feel better soon, start by breathing slow."

I have never hated a class more than Math347. Just came out with a bad grade in math 347 due to honestly a poorly taught class with a professor (James Pascaleff) who likely taught the class for the first year. Problems with the class immediately:
  1. Rushed lectures with rigorous proof on proofs that we will never use in exams.
  2. There was never really sample example problems to go through.
  3. Professor was super specific on what he is asking on midterms and final and only mentions those specifics AFTER the exams
  4. Office hours were useless since professor never did the problems and basically wanted us to do it.
  5. When asking about mistakes in exam, professor was very passive aggressive about the grading.
Anyone had the same sentiment with this class or is it just me?

Hello everyone, I've posted this on a few different pages but I really need help. I've been Home schooled since 2nd grade using Abeka Academy. I'm currently 17 and about half way done with 10th grade, about a year behind. My parents weren't involved (unless you count the once every 3 months my dad would check our progress and we would get in trouble) much, and basically left me, at 7 years old, with a laptop and expected me to get my school done. Obviously I didn't and my parents would let me go to the next grade even though I hadn't done any work. When I got to middle school I started doing (cheating through) online assignments. I dont really understand a lot of things past a 4th grade level. I should've tried harder when I got older and understood that I'd need this information but I got so overwhelmed. I have ADHD and it's really hard to learn stuff online, I get really distracted. Does anyone have any tips? I need something that's quick to the point. I'm mostly struggling with math (basically anything past adding fractions with the same denominator) but everything else isn't too great either. Please help

Several companies are expanding in south Arkansas. Some are even looking at the possibly of lithium production, an essential in electric vehicle batteries.
One concern, are there enough homes in the city to handle the growth? ā€œThe demand for lithium is only going to increase. America needs more lithium production so weā€™re not reliant on enemy countries like China, that produces so much of the worldā€™s lithium and other rare earth elements.
ā€œWe need housing. We have the infrastructure. Weā€™re extending infrastructure, but we need housing,ā€ said Magnolia Mayor Parnell Vann. All that housing is needed because ExxonMobil is planning to build one of the worldā€™s largest lithium processing facilities near town. Other companies, such as, Tetra and Standard Lithium, have also acquired thousands of acres in brine leases in Columbia and Lafayette counties.
The southwest region is located on a geological formation brimming with saltwater brine. The companies plan to chemically extract lithium from the brine. City leaders believe lithium extraction facilities could bring up to 6,000 jobs to Magnolia. With southwest Arkansas primed to be a leader in lithium production, business leaders in Magnolia say they want to be prepared to take advantage of this growing industry. Even though housing is tough to find right now, he believes if they can get the right investors, more people in town will benefit the entire community.
Even without the recent talk of lithium production, Vann says two existing companies in other industries have already made plans for expansion. The Potlatch-Deltic Timber Corporation is investing $130 million in upgrades, and the Albemarle Corporation, a specialty chemical manufacturer, is investing $540 million, which means hundreds of new jobs.
State leaders have said south Arkansas potentially has enough lithium to produce about 15% of the worldā€™s lithium.
Magnolia, a blue-collar town in the stateā€™s southern region, was once a locus for oil but is on track to become a major producer of lithium, dubbed ā€˜white goldā€™ because of its soft, silvery-white look and the fact it powers most modern tech ā€“ from cellphones to laptops and electric cars. Exxon Mobil is planning to build one of the worldā€™s largest lithium processing facilities near the town, with a capacity to produce 75,000 to 100,000 metric tons of lithium a year, sources say, which would be 15 percent of the worldā€™s lithium production.

Tetra, which produces chemicals for water treatment and recycling, in June said it had signed an agreement with a company known as Saltwerx to develop 6,138 acres of salty brine deposits in Arkansas that are filled with lithium and bromine, although it provided few additional details. Saltwerx is a subsidiary of Exxon, according to two people familiar with the matter.
Also moving into the southern state is Vancouver-based Standard Lithium, which secured rights for 30,000 acres of brine leases west of Magnolia. Standard Lithium announced in May that it sampled Arkansasā€™s highest confirmed lithium-grade brine.

Okay, so I've literally never had to study. Everything has always come naturally to me, for the most part. I've been struggling with math though, but it's never really been a cause for concern. Now that I'm ending the school year with a low C in geometry this year, I'm a bit disappointed in myself. Not totally my fault though, I haven't had a good math since like 4th grade šŸ˜’.
Anyway, how can I teach myself some geometry and basic algebra II this summer so I won't suck as bad next year? I'm gonna be in 5 advanced classes and starting a sport, so I won't have much time to study especially if I'm still in my long distance relationship around then. I probably won't have much time this summer either with summer camps and community service, but I'd still like to try. Any websites or books? I lose focus really easily so game based websites would be awesome for recs.

I (M16) come from an island on the west coast of norway my best friend Fredrick (M16) also lives here, and we have known each other for as long as i remember. My cousin Sarah (F14) lives in the other side of the country. (Roughly a 10-hour drive from here). She often visits us here because she had most of her family here, and we have grown up together. We know about everything there is to know about each other. She has struggled a lot with depression and almost killed herself a few months ago. She has diagnoses like ADHD and dyslexia, and she has got a very bad time at school. The school system with her sucks and she is still doing 4th grade maths. She and my friend met each other through me, and after some time, they recently started dating. They are together now and love each other a lot. And last year i got a new friend, Joe. We three hung out often when Sarah was here, and we really enjoyed the time together. But Joe has struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts a lot. He has almost no other friends, has been bullied at school and has poor parents. He too has several diagnoses. ADHD, slight autism and stuff like that. He also attempted suicide a few times. Now, Sarah went to turkey on a vacation a week ago, and there, she met some turkish older guy and got his snap. The chatted a bit, but they donā€™t anymore. Well, Joe claimed that she sent him videos of her kissing the turkish guy to him, and that he doesnā€™t have them, but she tells me itā€™s a lie. I can see just in the way she says it, that sheā€™s genuine. She talks about Fredrick all the time and is so in love that she never would do such a thing. But Joe keeps insisting and things have been complicated recently. Sarah and Fredrick are now mad at Joe for claiming this, and iā€™m kinda stuck in the middle now. If i choose to side with Joe, that might make him feel a lot better about loosing someone he trusted, but my relationship to my best friend and cousin could get very bad. But if i side with Sarah and Fredrick, wich iā€™m considering, i might loose Joe as a friend, and heā€™ll loose all the people he trust the most. This is the choice thatā€™s best for me personally, and itā€™s what iā€™d choose if i had a gun pointed at me and was forced to choose, but i donā€™t. And i wanna get the outcome that is best for all. But iā€™m afraid that Joe might get too tempted by suicide as a worst case scenario. So what is the right desicion? I've recently completed my third year of computer engineering at UofT, and I wanted to share my thoughts on the courses I've taken. I hope this will be beneficial to incoming first, second, and third-year engineering students. My area of depth is 6 (Software) and my areas of breadth are 4 (Control) and 5 (Computer hardware/networks).
Difficulty: How hard it was to comprehend course material and/or complete practice problems accurately. Keep in mind that difficulty is subjective but I tried to eliminate personal bias and be as objective as possible.
Workload: The amount of work to complete outside of lectures (labs, assignments, homework, studying for tests/exams).
All engineers take the exact same courses in their first year first semester and similar ones in second semester. I took these courses in 2021 during covid so some information might be outdated.
First Year Semester 1:
APS100 Orientation to Engineering:
Difficulty: 1/10 Workload: 3/10 Course Average: N/A
There is no technical material in this course. All coursework consists of Ethics analysis, creating a schedule for time management, creating your resume, and discussion board participation. During tutorials, the TA typically asks behavioral questions to the class and covers slides pertaining to engineering principles, the learning environment, test readiness, and related topics.
APS110 Engineering Chemistry and Materials Science
Difficulty: 6/10 Workload: 5/10 Course Average: B
This course blends elements of chemistry, physics, and mathematics, requiring lots of formulas and memorization. The assignments and online quizzes were moderately difficult. Not sure if heā€™s still teaching but Scott Ramsay was a really good professor. Really enjoyed watching his video demonstrations.
APS111 Engineering Strategies and Practices I
Difficulty: 3/10 Workload: 6/10 (Variable) Course Average: B
Students are organized into groups of 5-6 and are assigned the task of developing a solution for a client, following the engineering design process. Success in this course heavily relies on your team. Throughout the semester, there are several milestones where you need to submit large reports with your team, making it crucial to have capable teammates. Many teams resorted to last-minute cramming the night before each milestone (not a good idea). Additionally, there are two peer reviews, so make sure you contribute to avoid being perceived as an unproductive member. In most cases, you donā€™t need to worry about this though. Youā€™d likely all be good friends by that point (and give each other a perfect review).
CIV100 Mechanics
Difficulty: 9/10 Workload: 9/10 Course Average: C+
The consensus among most students in my year was that this was the toughest first year course. It's incredibly calculation heavy, with questions that may appear straightforward in theory but require multiple steps to solve. Even a minor error can screw up your entire calculation process. The assignments are extremely time-consuming, and the quizzes pose significant challenges. I suggest you work in a group for the assignments. Furthermore, both the final exam and midterm were exceptionally difficult.
MAT186 Calculus I
Difficulty: 4/10 Workload: 4/10 Course Average: B
If youā€™ve taken IB or AP this course will be a breeze. Even without that background, it's still relatively straightforward. Very little on integrals, mostly derivatives, rates of change, and graphs. PCEs and WebWorks were trivial, and the midterm and exam were easy.
MAT188 Linear Algebra
Difficulty: 7/10 Workload: 7/10 Course Average: B-
The majority of the course revolves around relatively straightforward operations on matrices and vectors. However, it does introduce abstract concepts like higher-order dimensions, which may require some deeper thinking to fully grasp. Webwork assignments were slightly more challenging compared to MAT186's, and completing assignments took a while. Once again, you should work with a partner or as a group. Pay attention in the MATLAB practicals because youā€™ll be using MATLAB pretty often in future courses.
First Year Semester 2:
APS105 Computer Fundamentals
Difficulty: 6/10 Workload: 5/10 Course Average: B-
If youā€™ve taken programming in high school, you will likely find this course very easy (2/10 difficulty). The course covers simple programming syntax, along with basic sorting algorithms, without delving into more advanced concepts beyond linked lists and binary trees. I do know many people who struggled though. I think that this was one of the more enjoyable courses of first year. Edit: perhaps not as easy as I described. Make sure to get programming experience in the summer before first year if you donā€™t already have it.
APS112 Engineering Strategies and Practices II
Difficulty: 5/10 Workload: 7/10 (Variable) Course Average: B+
This course is essentially a continuation of APS111, but with the added component of being assigned an actual client with a real-world problem statement. Each group works with a unique client, and at the end of the term, you present your final report directly to them, along with your supervisors. As with APS111, the quality of your team plays a crucial role in your success. Another thing to note is that unlike APS111, there were multiple individual assignments to complete on top of your team reports.
ECE110 Electrical Fundamentals
Difficulty: 8/10 Workload: 6/10 Course Average: C+
Definitely one of the harder first year courses. This course marks your introduction to circuits. Topics covered include capacitors, Ampere's law, Ohm's law, Kirchhoff's laws, AC/DC circuits, magnetism, Thevenin and Norton equivalents, and more. The material is extensive and requires thorough understanding, as many future courses will build upon its concepts. Make sure that you understand the content well, given its foundational importance in subsequent courses.
ECE191 Introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering
Difficulty: 0/10 Workload: 1/10 Course Average: N/A
Seminar course. You just need to show up to the lectures (one per week) and submit a 100-ish word report about what you learned.
MAT187 Calculus II
Difficulty: 6/10 Workload: 5/10 Course Average: C+
The workload in this course is comparable to Calc I, but the content is more challenging (obviously). It delves deeper into integrals and introduces concepts like ordinary differential equations and polar coordinates. But again, youā€™ll manage just fine if you did decently in Calc 1, and especially if youā€™ve taken AP math or IB HL math.
MIE100 Dynamics
Difficulty: 8/10 Workload 4/10 Course Average: C+
I personally found this to be the most challenging course in first year, but it seems that most people disagree with me. It shares similarities with CIV100, but youā€™re instead dealing with dynamic systems (moving) rather than static ones (not moving). Some concepts may prove difficult to grasp initially. However, if you focus on memorizing the relevant formulas and understanding when to apply them, you should be okay. Expect an emphasis on physics in this course.
Second year was the worst (for ECE) and a very big step up from first year. If you struggled in first year, you better lock in for second year.
Second Year Semester 1:
ECE201 ECE Seminar Course
Difficulty: 0/10 Workload: 0/10 Course Average: N/A
Another seminar course, except you just need to attend 7/10 lectures to pass. Most students just scan their Tcard at the entrance then leave right after. The lectures are pretty useless except the Magellan one where they show you how to choose courses for 3rd and 4th year.
ECE212 Circuit Analysis
Difficulty: 7/10 Workload: 8/10 Course Average: B+
This course provides a deeper exploration of circuits, extending beyond circuit solving to include frequency and sinusoidal analysis. Questions tend to be long so careless errors will cost you. Personally, I found the labs challenging, particularly because they required working with oscilloscopes at a higher level than I was used to, and I could not for the life of me figure out how to use that thing.
ECE241 Digital Systems
Difficulty: 7/10 Workload: 8/10 Course Average: B-
This hardware course focuses on the foundation of hardware. A lot of the content is at the fundamental level so itā€™s not too hard to comprehend. However, the main challenge lies in learning Verilog, a hardware description language. I hate Verilog. All the labs are done using Verilog, and frustratingly, the course provides no instruction on the language, nor are there many helpful resources available online. This lack of guidance made what should have been straightforward labs much more difficult. Thankfully if you are in CE, youā€™ll never need to take another course with Verilog again. The midterm was easy but the final was borderline impossible.
ECE244 Programming Fundamentals
Difficulty: 7/10 Workload: 7/10 Course Average: B-
This course is the sequel to APS105, delving into more advanced concepts like pointers, constructors, polymorphism, and inheritance. Many of these topics may feel familiar if you have prior programming experience, particularly from high school. Consequently, if you're already proficient in programming, as many computer engineering students are, you should be able to navigate through this course well. The labs were generally manageable, although a couple of them were time-consuming.
MAT290 Advanced Engineering Mathematics
Difficulty: 7/10 Workload 8/10 Course Average: B
In this course, youā€™ll learn a lot of miscellaneous mathematical concepts that will be relevant in future courses. The goal is to establish a strong foundation to facilitate understanding in third and fourth-year courses. There is also a quiz every week. They were terrible from a time management standpoint, but as long as you spent 3-4 hours per week completing the assigned textbook questions, you should be alright since one (out of two) of the questions on the quiz is guaranteed to be an assigned textbook question (at least, that was the case when I took the course).
MAT291 Calculus III
Difficulty: 9/10 Workload 9/10 Course Average: B-
The entire workload comes from studying for those damn weekly quizzes, much like MAT290. Personally, I found it to be one of the most difficult courses I've ever taken. Think of calculus 2, but now everything is in three dimensions, encompassing concepts like surface integrals, flux integrals, and more. Additionally, the course introduces abstract topics that I still struggle to grasp. Balancing the demands of this course alongside everything else was an incredibly stressful experience.
Second Year Semester 2:
ECE216 Signals and Systems
Difficulty: 8/10 Workload:7/10 Course Average: C+
I think everyone hated this course. It was so poorly taught and the midterms felt haphazard and unpredictable. I relied on the power of BS to pass (worked surprisingly). Other than working with many graphs and MATLAB, I donā€™t remember much about this course because it was so uninteresting.
ECE221 Electric and Magnetic Fields
Difficulty: 8/10 Workload: 5/10 Course Average: C+
This course serves as an introduction to fields, while also expanding on the principles covered in ECE110. Many concepts build upon intuitive ideas, such as the repulsion of identical charges and attraction of opposite charges, which can make seemingly complex topics less intimidating. There are also many procedures that you need to know to solve specific types of questions. The labs are generally straightforward. You just need to follow the steps on the lab worksheet and answer a few simple questions from the TA.
ECE231 Intro to Electronics
Difficulty: 9/10 Workload: 7/10 Course Average: C+
This course is basically circuit analysis but significantly harder. It combines everything you've learned about circuits thus far, introducing new topics on top of that foundation. There are so many new concepts to learn and the final pretty much tests you on all of them. Iā€™ve encountered multiple scenarios where I saw two concepts that I thought were completely separate from each other being integrated into a single question on an exam. Also very calculation heavy. Despite my experience in this course, I must admit Khoman Fang was a great professor.
ECE243 Computer Organization
Difficulty: 7/10 Workload: 6/10 Course Average: B
This course is a direct continuation of ECE241, and surprisingly, I found it a lot more enjoyable than its prerequisite. The focus is on Assembly language programming, which I found to be way more understandable compared to Verilog. Assembly operates at a fundamental level, so youā€™re technically working with the most basic building blocks in programming. The labs often involved seemingly simple tasks like counting to 10 on a HEX display, but the nature of Assembly meant that achieving this could require hundreds of lines of code. I appreciated these labs as they provided a refreshing change from the usual programming tasks. Final and midterm exams were relatively easy.
ECE297 Software communication and design
Difficulty: 8/10 Workload: 9/10 (Variable) Course Average: B+
Despite the demanding workload, this course was one of my favorites. The main project involved collaborating in teams of three to develop a geographical information system (similar to Google Maps). Unlike other courses where teams are assigned, here you have the freedom to choose your own teammates. Starting off, your team is given only the OpenStreetMap database, and the APIs, granting you complete control over your project's design, functionality, and optimization. Performance enhancement and pathfinding algorithms were key components of the project. It's crucial for all team members to contribute effectively for success in this course; And trust me, this is not a one or two person project. To succeed in this course, all three members must be doing their share.
Third Year:
They say that third year is the easiest year for ECE, but that depends on what courses you choose. For me, it was only slightly easier than second year but still significantly harder than first year.
APS360 Fundamentals of Deep Learning
Difficulty: 8/10 Workload : 8/10 Course Average: B+
This course felt fundamentally very different compared to the other programming related courses. If youā€™re unfamiliar with deep learning, the content can be overwhelming but the inner workings behind AI are both fascinating and challenging to grasp. Fortunately, much of the coding in the course revolves around preparing data, setting up AI architectures, and training/testing models, rather than building an AI from scratch. While the labs are manageable, the final project can be very time consuming, particularly as training a single model can require hours or even days. Regarding this aspect, make sure you start early. Both the midterm and final exams were quite difficult.
ECE302 Probability and Applications
Difficulty: 7/10 Workload: 3/10 Course Average: B-
The first half of this course is very straightforward. Just an introduction to probability. The second half is where the difficulty quickly ramps up. Make sure you donā€™t underestimate the second half of the course. I made the mistake of assuming the material was easy after performing well on both midterms (midterms were very easy), leading me to neglect the final third of the course so I flunked the final. FYI, our marks were determined solely by the 2 midterms and the final.
ECE344 Operating Systems
Difficulty: 8/10 Workload: 10/10 Course Average: B
This course had the most difficult and demanding labs Iā€™ve ever seen in my life. They are due every two weeks and some of them took most students more than 15 hours to complete. Iā€™ve seen people staying up all night in the GB computer rooms to finish these labs. One positive aspect of the course if Jon Eyolfson is your professor, is that all lectures are both recorded and live-streamed, allowing attendance in person, online synchronously, or asynchronously. But if you have Ding Yuan, good luck. I heard he is not only bad at teaching, but also makes you program an operating system from scratch. The course content is quite interesting and the Midterm and final exams were fair.
ECE345 Algorithms and Data Structures
Difficulty: 8/10 Workload: 7/10 Course Average: B+
If you're one of those programming geniuses who have been doing Leetcode since like 3 years old, youā€™d have likely already learned all course content before youā€™ve even started the course. You could probably write midterm and final exams without attending any lectures. However, if you're not as experienced, attending every lecture, taking detailed notes, and staying focused is crucial. Personally speaking, some algorithms were incredibly difficult for me to grasp, while others were simple. Assignments typically include both coding and long-answer components, which can be time-consuming, but you can work with a partner.
TEP444 Positive Psychology for Engineers
Difficulty: 1/10 Workload: 3/10 Course Average: A-
This course overall was very enjoyable and a nice refreshing experience from the other technical courses. You go on excursions to various locations with your group and write reports. It's an excellent opportunity to expand your social circle and make new friends. If you aim for an A- grade (80-85), you can breeze through with minimal effort. However, achieving a higher grade (A or A+) would require significantly more work (like 5 times more, no joke), which is not worth the extra effort in my opinion.
CSC343 Introduction to Databases
Difficulty: 7/10 Workload: 10/10 Course Average: Unreleased
The content of this course is actually pretty interesting and is taught well. But the assignments were excessively time consuming. There are only three in total, but each one demanded such a significant investment of time to the point where I contemplated dropping the course altogether. You do work with a partner (going solo isnā€™t even an option if you want to complete the assignments) but even so, be prepared to invest 15-30 hours per person, per assignment (they also mark hard). Despite the workload, I do recommend taking this course because knowing SQL can substantially benefit you in the future. Just start the assignments early. On a positive note, the midterm and final were relatively straightforward.
ECE311 Introduction to Control Systems
Difficulty: 10/10 Workload: 5/10 Course Average: C+
This course didn't come with a heavy workload, consisting only of three labs and two midterms. However, I found the content to be very challenging. It felt like they condensed and combined every concept from every engineering math and physics course into one. Topics ranged from circuits and dynamics to Laplace transforms, matrices, Bode plots, and more. It didnā€™t help that Prof Scardovi didnā€™t record any lectures, has messy handwriting, and uses a damn chalkboard instead of modern technology like other profs do. The midterms and final were somewhat lenient compared to the lectures, but this course still ended up being my lowest mark.
ECE361 Computer networks I
Difficulty: 8/10 Workload: 9/10 Course Average: B
This course requires a lot of memorization compared to other courses. Youā€™ll have to understand calculation processes but also memorize a lot of general knowledge about networks. A problem with this course is that some concepts that show up in tests are not adequately explained in lectures. By far the best way to study is to do past exams. Professor Valaee often recycles questions, sometimes even directly copying past midterms and finals (like he did in my cohort). Unlike other courses, there is no big assignment/lab for this course, but it makes up for it with quantity. Thereā€™s a quiz every week, a wireshark lab every 2 weeks, a programming lab every 2 weeks, and a midterm. The programming labs are already difficult by themselves, but this cumulative workload felt very overwhelming.
ECE472 Engineering Economics and Entrepreneurship
Difficulty: 7/10 Workload: 5/10 Course Average: B+
This is straight up an economics course, no engineering at all. Youā€™ll learn about investments, equity, financing, and related areas. There are 4 quizzes throughout the semester, with quiz 3 (quiz 3 specifically) being by far the hardest (average in the 50s). Since you're able to bring your textbook to the quizzes and exam, my biggest tip is to write past quiz and exam solutions in your textbook, as there's a limited pool of questions, and new questions often resemble some kind of variation of past ones.
ECE421 Introduction to Machine Learning
Difficulty: 9/10 Workload: 7/10 Course Average: unreleased
While the course content itself may be challenging, surprisingly, the midterm and final exams were pretty easy. There's a slight discorrelation between the lecture material and what appears on the exams, but relying on past exams for preparation should be enough. The course leans heavily on mathematical concepts, much more so than APS360. The assignments were difficult and tedious but I recommend you work with others to complete it.
With that, I've covered my thoughts and tips for all the engineering courses I've completed. Transitioning into your next year in engineering, particularly if youā€™re transitioning from high school, can feel daunting. 2024.05.16 22:16 divinepasta I am a software engineer turned statistician who got into an Ontario med school this year. I hope my non-trad journey can provide some insight and hope for others out here. This is a long post + AMA!

First off, congrats to everyone for the past application cycle! No matter what your outcome was, it's a big accomplishment to have gone through the whole process. I'm a non-trad who was accepted to Queen's this year, on my 2nd application cycle. I will be 27 when I start this Fall. It feels surreal and I always told myself I'd write a post about my journey if this day ever came - and here we are.
I didn't decide to apply to med school until after I finished undergrad, and while doing my research, I always wished I could read/hear perspectives from others with my background. Even though everybody's path will be different, I hope that my story can provide some insight (or even hope) for other non-trad applicants out there.
Before we start, here are my stats because that's important:
I'll go in chronological order, briefly describing some of the major events that led me to today, starting from high school. Please ask me any questions in the comments - (almost) nothing is off limits :)
TLDR: I was a software engineer who quit after a year to go to grad school and pursue medicine. It took me 4 years from when I decided to pursue this to getting accepted at a Canadian school. I did a Masters in stats and applied 2 times. My biggest takeaway is to do a lot of what you are passionate about, do it well, and take it far (for me, that was teaching and research).
Some demographics:
High school, 2011-2015: I was always interested in medicine as a kid, but math was always my favourite subject. I applied to several science and math programs, and was choosing between Western Med Sci and Waterloo Math. I did not apply to Mac Health Sci and looking back, I'm not sure why (perhaps a sign that I didn't believe in myself). I ended up choosing Waterloo Math and giving up on the medical school route in grade 12, for a few reasons: the math program had 6 co-op terms, meaning I'd graduate with 2 full-time years of job experience, and I wasn't particularly good at biology and didn't have strong reasons for pursuing medicine back then. Med school also seemed like an impossible goal, especially since I didn't have any mentors in the field.
Undergrad, 2015-2020: This was honestly a fun time for me. I double-majored in stats and CS and I did 6 co-ops, 5 of which were in software engineering roles. I had originally planned to do actuarial science, but quickly saw the earning potential in the tech industry and made it my goal to get a job at a big tech company. A lot of personal stuff happened during this time as well that affirmed my decision pursue a software engineering career. One part of it was that I didn't want my parents to worry about me, and being able to show them that I was able to do well for myself in tech felt really good.
Halfway through my co-ops, I realized that I wasn't feeling the most fulfilled in software roles, but management roles also didn't appeal to me. I didn't really take the time to fully explore this feeling, and it was easy to put it away in light of the high income and getting to live in big cities for internships. Still, I did well in my co-ops and built up my software skills. After realizing that "grades don't matter for getting tech jobs", I let my grades slip. It wasn't until 4th year that I decided I wanted to keep the door open for grad school, and starting taking classes I liked and getting better grades. I graduated with an 82% average, with my grades all over the place (which I'd later learn was bad for calculating my OMSAS gpa lol).
Throughout undergrad, I still wanted to be involved in clubs and stuff, so here's a list of all my undergrad ECs. All these were only 4-8 months long.
Another activity from undergrad that made it onto my application was a research project I did at one of my co-ops. It was in NLP and I worked on it even after finishing that coop term. It ended up taking 4 years to get published.
Full-time software engineering, 2020-2021: I signed a return offer from one of my co-ops, and had planned to move to Seattle in the summer after graduating to start working. But Covid changed all that. I moved back home with my parents in the GTA and worked at my software job remotely for the full year.
It was during this year that I was really feeling unfulfilled in my job, and did a lot of thinking about how I wanted my career to look. I started to remember that med school was something that I once wanted to do, and I also started reading/watching a lot of content from people in medicine with non-traditional backgrounds. My partner, who is also from Ontario, was accepted to an international med school, and many of our friends were also getting into schools in Canada around the same time, so this reaffirmed to me that it was actually possible. While working for the year, I made a plan to apply to grad school (academia would be my back-up) and take the MCAT. Here's what my 2020-2021 looked like:
During this year, I also wrote out a 3-year plan that included my masters and 2 application cycles. I wrote out what courses I would take to fulfill prereqs, which schools I would apply to each year, and what my back-up plan would be. I think this was important to do rigorously since it gave me a clear idea of which schools I was eligible for, and how much work it would take me to become eligible for the rest of them.
I will also add that this is a rather objective recount of my process that year. In reality, I completely recognized how insane it was to quit my job to go to grad school, and I'm super lucky that I was able to.
Grad school, 2021-2023: I moved to BC to start my Masters in statistics in August. This choice was partly to gain IP status in BC, but mostly, this was really the best program for me out of the schools I applied to. Even looking back now, I would have chosen this program even without the IP consideration.
Here's a breakdown of everything I did during the first year of my Masters:
First application, 2022: I applied only to UBC for my first application cycle. In retrospect, I should have just applied broadly right away, but I didn't feel like I had enough references built up by then. And UBC doesn't require references unless you get an interview. I honestly had very high hopes of getting an interview this year, and was crushed to receive a rejection in December with an NAQ of 50-75. I thought that my application was unique, but upon reflection, I realized that the lack of volunteering and community service was a big gap in my application.
So here's a breakdown of everything I did in my second year of my Masters and beyond:
Second application, 2023: This time, I applied to UBC and every school in Ontario that I was eligible for: Queen's and Mac. I was rejected by UBC pre-interview again. Same NAQ, and my total score didn't change. I was totally crushed and thought it was over for this year. I was very honest with myself about the Ontario applications - Mac was a total throwaway application and Queen's felt like a complete gamble. I was rejected from Mac pre-interview but one fateful day in January, I received an email from Queen's. It had a very generic "Application Status" subject line and I opened it fully expecting a rejection. I was totally shocked when it said I was invited for the MMI! And a few months later, I was also invited to the Panel.
Some of my thoughts and preparation for the interviews:
MMI - Aside from the usual resources that are posted here, I also took advantage of the following:
Panel - I was so happy to receive a panel interview, and knew that I could not mess this up. I prepped with a few different friends of mine who were in med school, and another friend who was going through Ontario interviews too. Going in, I felt very prepared, and in the days leading up to it, I even felt like my answers were on autopilot and a bit over-prepared. So I really tried to relax and "be myself"/answer genuinely during the panel. The real panel felt quite cold - I didn't get any feedback from my interviewers, and was a bit thrown off by some of the questions. I was also cut off by the Kira Talent timer at the end, and didn't get to say goodbye or thank you. For the rest of the day, I ruminated on all my answers. The content of my answers felt somewhere between "why would I say that" and "just fine" and "great", but I was definitely feeling a bit bad about the whole experience.
Decision Week, 2024: That brings us to this week! In the week leading up to the decision, I flip flopped between "My panel hated me, there's no way I passed the vibe check" and "My answers were good, my MMI felt good, why wouldn't they accept me". I opened the email at 6am (Pacific time) with zero expectations - I truly had no idea what was waiting for me on the other side. The first word was "Congratulations!" and I didn't read much farther than that before I started celebrating :)
So that's it. I told a lot of people I work with, my Masters supervisor, my parents, and my friends, and it felt amazing to deliver this good news. My closing thoughts about my whole journey are that even though I do think my application was great, I still got incredibly lucky. At any point in the process, I could have gotten an undesirable outcome, and there was nothing I could do to control that (other than my efforts prior). I also relied a lot on my support system, and was so lucky to have had + made friends who are in med school or were practising already.
I just feel so grateful to be starting this Fall, and I'm happy to say that my high school self would be in absolute disbelief if she could see where I am today. That statement is a sign to me that I'm on the right path, and I'm just so excited to be starting this long, hard career that is medicine.
