2024.05.18 22:01 MalachiteMussel Where to find larger menswear early midcentury

I’m wondering if anyone has advice on good and consistent sources for larger 30s-50s men’s clothing, most specifically trousers and suits. My fiancé is 6’3”, 46”ish waist, he’s got thick thighs and a full booty from a lot of cycling and understandably it’s challenging to find vintage clothing of this era of this size.
I’m very open to reproduction vintage but one challenge we run into with men’s reproduction (more often vintage inspired) is finding things with a true natural waist high rise especially for men with a bit of belly. I’m wondering whether anyone here can think of specific dealers who source a bit more larger size menswear and/or repro companies that make collections in larger size. I’m also open to hearing about tailors/sewists etc who sew and sell vintage repro but would love some sources that are RTW. Thanks all for any tips!

2024.05.18 20:27 Telephonecableguy Did I wire this button plug correctly?

Hello everyone I am very passionate and I want to try to learn how to wire plugs and cords together so I can make my own lamp cords and extension cords and such. I am fascinating by the old school button plugs and by vintage looking cloth covered wire. Now all the products here I ordered from a modern company called sundial wire that sells reproductions. The orange cloth wire is insulated with rubber and the button plugs are modern as well just made to look vintage.
This is a polarized plug as you can see. White goes to silver terminal and black goes to brass terminal.
Now the button plugs are too small for the underwriters knot. The only thing I’m worried about is the little bits of cloth strings that are sticking out. Will this cloth conduct electricity? Is there a danger there? Also look at my copper wire strands. Will that little bit of fraying on the brass terminal be a problem. I really tried hard not to cross the wires. Do any of the wires seem crossed?
I’m just a young guy with appreciation for the old style and I just want to make sure I’m doing things right.

Why did we make an Art Book?

From early 2012 and throughout development, it became apparent from the volume of iteration that a possible art book could exist one day. Mountains of sketchbooks, paintings, files, and documents were carefully stored, and as the game took shape, the ideas that blossomed and evolved into a rich and vibrant Sky world were assembled into a veritable treasure trove, The Art of Sky.
“It's a documentation of the creative process that we went through that the community and the fans can actually see.”
― Cecil Kim (Studio Art Director)
https://preview.redd.it/3mp7iueort0d1.jpg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5af4487d0ccc5f2f26b142f7b87a010518fee0c4

What has the process looked like?

The Art of Sky book has been in production for three years. A lot of time and careful attention was put into researching how to guarantee the level of quality and thoughtful presentation that Sky fans have come to expect. Our production process ensures that the artwork and memories within this book accurately convey the story of Sky's development from TGC's perspective.
“Going back and digging up all the sketches and artwork we’ve created and how I was able to trace my memories back and walk the steps that I took in those seven years was interesting. It was refreshing to remember the feeling, emotion, and excitement that I had at the time, and also the worries and uncertainties.”
― Yui Tanabe (Visual Development Lead)

What makes this book so special?

We wanted to push the boundaries of what defines an art book. Not only does it showcase the remarkable sketches, paintings, and concepts that laid the foundations for the game, it is a deep reflection on the emotional highs and lows behind the scenes experienced by TGC during the process of developing Sky.
The book is a true celebration of quality and design, crafted with premium materials to ensure faithful and accurate reproduction of the artworks and the commentary that accompany them. In addition, a special STAR feature has been developed and embedded into the book, giving you an exclusive, unique perspective of the game.
https://preview.redd.it/gbqy3jcvrt0d1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a5cbb72de373bc5b5762dda79c83e616d50c8b3
“I think what’s unique about this art book is that we really wanted to invite the reader to feel like they have a seat at the table, as though they were there at the time as an artist or developer alongside thatgamecompany.”
― Jennie Kong (Narrative Writer)

Why did we include fanart in this book?

Community takes pride of place at the heart of Sky. With so many talented fan artists sharing their unique perspectives and interpretations of Sky, it felt important to include some of these fan-created artworks in The Art of Sky. Towards the end of 2021 and start of 2022, TGC curated a small selection of fan art they enjoyed, and after consulting with the artists, these pieces found a special place in a section at the end of the book, aptly named "Orbit".
"Orbit" spans ten pages (242-251), eight of which showcase the fan art, and is included as an additional extra to a full and comprehensive exploration of Sky's development.
We understand the decision to include a selection of fan art may be considered unusual for fans in some countries, and we appreciate the opportunity to learn from these perspectives for future projects. We sincerely hope you're able to enjoy this brief flight through "Orbit", as a celebratory conclusion to TGC's visual odyssey through the development of Sky!

Did we include a STAR feature?

We try to find ways to make owning Sky merchandise more than simply owning a product. The same design principle is true for the art book, so we gave it the STAR treatment! Images and captions from the book were thoughtfully selected and referenced to create a set of captivating behind-the-scenes experiences which can be shared with friends!
Please note: The STAR feature can currently be scanned only on compatible mobile and Nintendo Switch devices.

What materials and processes did we use for production?

The dust jacket of The Art of Sky offers both protection and a pleasing aesthetic. Employing a double-layer embossed printing technique and premium protective material, it achieves a delicate three-dimensional effect. Underneath lies a hardcover bound in cloth in a customized classic TGC blue color, pearlescent paper, and an embossed effect that depicts two Sky kids holding hands. This collision of color and texture results in a beautifully minimalistic exterior.
https://preview.redd.it/vfngbb9ast0d1.jpg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=20eb76352e7f0543fd46bf992e058a0ef17a7720

Contained inside is an 8" NFC signal shielding card that protects the STAR chip. Printed with classic Sky imagery, this shielding card must be unsealed and removed in order to use the STAR feature. You may wish to re-use this card wherever you would like the added security of a signal shielding card, or keep it for display as a collectable postcard! This card is a small token gift to keep your STAR chip safe from unauthorized use prior to its arrival.
A special glow-in-the-dark blue fire icon greets you inside the book. May it glow in the darkness and guide you as you explore the unknown world of Sky with us. Additionally, each book is individually numbered. Your unique number is displayed next to a candle icon towards the back of the book. What will your "candle count" be?
https://preview.redd.it/q00o6l6mst0d1.jpg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c346e9570e413163e39daac22916a3a1bf68a9dc
The text and image pages are printed on premium speciality paper with excellent color reproduction, while the chapter pages featuring hand-drawn sketches are printed on vintage-effect paper to give a unique reading experience. The edges of the pages are wrapped in a custom light silver effect to give a charming uniform appearance.
https://preview.redd.it/6a4uqglqst0d1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eee62ff3b874e5a7b786ba0e194193090edfe739
As a pre-order bonus, a collectible set of 8 postcards and 3 posters will be included, making it a truly unique collector’s item worth cherishing. Just as each Child of Light brings us inspiration, we hope that each intricate detail we lovingly present can also ignite the light of exploration in your heart, inspire your creativity and passion, and warmly accompany you on your journey through life.

What is our hope for this book?

Our biggest hope is that this book will continue to foster a deeper connection between fans of Sky and the developers of the game. Through this book you can explore the intricacies involved in the evolution of ideas which ultimately determined what Sky: Children of the Light became at launch.
Sharing TGC’s development process will hopefully inspire future generations of players, artists, and developers who will one day tell their own stories through the medium of video games.
“Artworks are a tool of communication to make the final product. We didn’t make our art pieces to hang on the wall, we sketched some things on scraps of paper and some of those ideas became the trigger to make something that ended up becoming a great game.” ― Yui Tanabe
“It’s inspiring to see that so many interesting ideas were recorded in this book. I hope that future artists and game designers can be inspired by what we’ve recorded in this book when they make their own games or tell their own stories. This is something we’re very proud of.” ― Cecil Kim

Help with pricing Elsie De Wolfe piece, please?
This is the details I could find on an auction site however no pricing details for it. Honestly not looking to sell. The main reason I'm asking is because I have a collection of old consoles and was looking for something to build them into. This was just too cheap to pass on in a second hand store. Before I start causing irreversible damage to a beautiful piece I was hoping the community could help me out with pricing and possibly save a gorgeous piece from certain death.
An element of classic traditional decors conceived by interior decorators such as Elsie De Wolfe, Sister Parish, Jansen andMario Buatta, red lacquer case pieces--such as this glass-door vitrine set atop a commode with three drawers lined in decorative paper--came into fashion in the eighteenth century. This unique example, signed and dated, was painted in 1951 by James Reynolds (NÉ Harold Warner Reynolds, 1891-1957), an award-winning costume and set designer, book illustrator, author , and wallpaper and textile designer who was born in New York City and died in Bellagio, Italy. His works include murals for the Palladian Ballroom at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C., the Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri, Italy's Villa Torrigiani, near Padua, and Manhattan's House of Hellas, the headquarters of the Friends Of Greece. He also painted a portrait of Happy Landings racehorse owned by beer heiress Mrs. August Busch, and designed costumes for the 1921, 1922, and 1923 editions of the Ziegfeld Follies as well as for Jerome Kerns musical "Sunny", Cole Porter's "fifty Million Frenchmen", and Charles Dillingham's production of "The Last of Mrs. Cheney", Reynolds's paintwork on the item offered here reflects a postwar evocation of the European craze for chinoiserie in the 1700s, its coral-red lacquer finish richly embellished monkeys, and Thai-costumed figures building a pair of caparisoned elephants, the howdahs sheltering a mandarin and his wife. The fantastical effect recalls the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "The King and I", which had its Broadway premiere the year that Reynolds painted this extravagant furnishing. The presence of shells, both carved and painted, underscores the exotic impression. It is made in two pieces: the electrified vitrine sits atop the commode. Reynolds signed the piece, as well as a matching cocktail table with his initials, J.R., followed by a five-pointed star and the the date. The case piece install, styled after 18th- century Genoese furniture , likely was sourced from Lavezzo, Inc., the Manhattan furniture shop of Reynold's friend Daniel H. Lavezzo (his family long owned the old0guard pub P.J. Clarke's), which was noted for "Period Reproductions". per a 1945 guidebook, and for its Italian-style furnishings, per Reynolds's book "Baroque Splendour" (1950). Lavezzo's firm provided vintage furniture and lighting to Vizcaya, the great Miami mansion of James Deering, and designed a custom-made headboard for actress Marilyn Monroe: John D. Rockefeller was also a client.

2024.05.13 18:55 Sea_Ellie Help with fixing/cleaning a vintage painting!

So I recently purchased a vintage print that my mother loves (Himalayan Rabbits Eating Cabbage by P. Rolence). The frame and the print arrived undamaged, the person packaged it so well! When they packaged it they added a few of those air bag things and then bubbled wrapped it to ensure nothing would be damaged. The air bags rested against the painting’s surface.
They were very careful to ensure nothing would happen during shipping, but the problem is that the words on the air bag things left a print in the middle of one of the white rabbits. I live in the south, so I assume this happened because of the humidity and heat.
My mother and I love the painting so much, does anyone know a way to remove the transferred words without damaging the painting? I believe it is from the 90s and it has a kind of varnish coat over it. It is a reproduction of the painting, but it still has a kind of cracked painting texture to it. I have no clue about the actual materials used to create it. Any ideas or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Duck Camo, Vietnam War
Ive been trying to find a correct duck camo hat for my early advisor impression. I’m trying to find a correct duck camo boonie or a “local-made” reproduction similar to the ones in the photos.
It’s been one hell of a task to find reproductions and originals of either. By originals I also mean vintage commercial.
If anyone who does an impression like this or anyone who has knowledge on sources to find decent reproductions please let me know. It would be greatly appreciated!

Vespasian AR Denarius Counterfeit/Modern Reproduction. 2024.05.10 16:21 RebelRouserSchnauzer Men's High Waisted Summer Pants

Men's High Waisted Summer Pants
Howdy! I have been looking for a pair of reproduction mens pants made from a light material like linen/cotton. Think 50s rockabilly or midcentury with a higher waist (higher rise than 12).
I have a lot of true vintage and repro pants but they typically are made of wool or garbardine which aren't as breathable for the summer.
Thank you!

2024.05.04 02:18 GerfTheSherff Barrel Band Question

Barrel Band Question
I have an S&W 22-4 (1917 reproduction) that I want to use to clone one of the revolvers used by Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark. the barrel needs to be cut down from 5.5 to 4 inches and a barrel band front sight added. Pictured here is a closeup on the front sight on the screen used 1917. There are a lot of vintage front sights out there that look similar to the one pictured. That being said how did they get this barrel band so flush to the barrel? Most banded front sights I’ve seen have a noticeably wider diameter than the barrel, because well, it has to be able to slide over the barrel. Did they thread it on? Is the band just the flimsiest of thin aluminum because it’s a movie prop? If anyone out there thinks they know how to achieve this look I’d love to hear what you think.

Do vintage reproduction dishes exist?
Basically I want to buy some vintage looking dishes without the concern of lead paint. I know some people don’t actually think it’s a big deal and that’s okay for you, live your life, but I personally am very uncomfortable with eating off of vintage dishes for this reason. I have only found the brand Atomic Drinkware so far, which is very beautiful, but just not my style. I’m looking for things like dainty florals or herbs, not shapes or anything like that. I love this Thymeless Herbs collection by Correlle, I just worry about the lead paint risk. If you know of any vintage dish reproductions, please let me know, thanks!

Automotive art in Bond's Dr No apartment
After a lot of searching, I've discovered what the automotive prints are on the wall in Bond's apartment in Dr No. As most will know, when Bond returns home from Le Cercle to find Sylvia Trench (Eunice Gayson) putting in his apartment, there are five prints of vintage automobiles visible on his wall.
The prints are by an artist named George A. Oliver and are reproductions from a book called Early Motor Cars. Copies of the book are rare, although prints from it seem to be available online from places like Etsy. I haven't been able to find any information on Oliver.
Interestingly, a copy of a different book with illustrations by Oliver was owned by Bond bibliographer Jon Gilbert). It's available for sale here.
It would be great if the 007 Store made the five-print collection available for fans to purchase.
