2024.05.20 01:48 WadeTheWilson [BUG] Download Notification Banner Refuses to Close/Clear

For likely unnecessary clarity: I'm specifically talking about the out-of-app download notification/info banner you would find minimized at the bottom of the menu opened by swiping down from the top of your screen (under the buttons & larger notifications). Sorry for stating the annoyingly obvious, but my experiences in I.T. have made providing these clarifying details a consummate habit. It's not because I think y'all are dullards, promise.
DETAILS: - Perhaps... 5 to 10% of the the time, after downloading a file using the main Firefox mobile app (1 or more images, for example), when attempting to dismiss the notification banner, it will stubbornly refuse to. - It doesn't matter whether you dismiss the notification by swiping it away (in either direction) or hitting the clear button to dismiss all notifications. - It doesn't matter whether the notification banner is left minimized or expanded. - It doesn't matter whether the file(s) were downloaded successfully or not. - It doesn't matter whether there are other notifications or not. - When swiping, it reacts to your motion by moving slightly, but simply rebounds right back. - Speed of swipes are not a factor. - When utilizing the clear all notifications button, all other notifications are dismissed & the drop down menu retracts, as intended. But pulling the menu back down reveals the download notification banner remains. - Closing the Firefox app entirely has no effect. - It doesn't matter if any tabs are open or not. - Restarting or power-cycling the phone itself does solve the issue, allowing you to dismiss the notification as normal. - Yes, that does mean the download notification banner remains upon startup. Unfortunately, I am unable to recall whether the notification is always still there on startup or not, only that I have still had to clear it before... but my gut is leaning towards no? - Again, my memory leaves me uncertain, but I believe allowing enough time to pass (minimum of several hours), before attempting to dismiss the notification again will "fix" the issue, as it will dismiss as intended. - This is a consistent issue I've encountered regularly, across multiple phones of different models. - This issue has persisted to occur for years, possibly with varying regularity. - App is up-to-date. - Currently using a Note 8.
While not a critical issue by any means, it has finally grated on my nerves & OCD enough to want a damn fix badly enough to finally do something about it.
My own searches via multiple search engines & reddit specifically hasn't helped me find any answers... or even anyone discussing the same issue, which I find troubling. But perhaps it was my specific search terms (though I worded it a few different ways).
Sooooo... any ideas for me, boyos?

2024.05.20 00:55 arthuriduss Should I Quit or Am I Being Dramatic?

Hi all!
I (25F) am currently a marketing coordinator in Atlanta for a dental specialty company making 38K a year. I graduated with my PR degree in 2021 and wasn’t able to find work in marketing until 2023, but I have previous experience working closely with a professional sports team in an unrelated field (digital asset manager)
I want to start out by saying that my low salary is definitely my own doing. In the interview process (4 interviews + a personal phone call from the COO), I was asked how much I would like to be compensated. I was fearful of being rejected for the position by asking for too much, so I settled on asking for “anything above 35K” as to not scare an offer away. They let me know that I was an easy choice + the most suited for the position, and they offered me 38K. Sweet, I’ll take it.
The original scope of responsibilities included doing the referral marketing for all of our company’s offices for the state I live in. It’s a remote/hybrid position (which I realize is a huge blessing and understand why they are offering the lower end of the salary), but just a week after my start date I came to realize that all 4 of the other marketing coordinators in different regions were making almost 11K more than I am at their start date. I chalk this up to me being too afraid to ask for any more compensation, so again, no worries.
I didn’t start feeling slighted/overwhelmed until they entirely changed the scope of my responsibilities. At the beginning of 2024, our manager let us know that we would no longer personally be doing the face-to-face marketing ourselves, but simply supplying our offices with the necessary information (referral reports to show which offices to gift to) and general gifting ideas to give our offices a more limited scope of gift options and to prevent them from coming to us with crazy/unattainable gift ideas. Sounds great!
Every week, it seems that my manager adds a new responsibility to my plate. It started in January when she let us all know that we would be responsible for managing the marketing budgets of all of our practices, something I have no experience in and was only explained to once on a group Teams call. I recall asking her a question about whether an item fell under “promotional items” or “referral marketing”, and she replied with a long message with such snark that this is a learning moment for me to figure out myself.
In February, my manager assigned me to start creating/producing our company wide newsletter, something that takes up a lot of my time, not even including the proofreading Teams meetings my manager requires before sending to our COO for approval.
My manager also put all of us coordinators on “development plans” (not improvement plans), and mine is to spend 2 hours of deep research of SEO and to send a page long report weekly and to have a presentation slideshow to present to her and our COO by May. I asked the other coordinators what their development plans were, and they were along the lines of “Try to improve public speaking by taking this HUB Academy class!” That required no further action items.
My manager requested that I be placed in our company’s “culture club” (I’m the only black team member) and the entire club has placed responsibility on me to create and execute all future events. I am not located in my company’s home-base city, so I’m not at headquarters daily to hear the updates to what we’re doing daily, and I often feel left in the dark and behind during our meetings while everyone else is caught up to speed, even though I let them know to please CC me on all emails pertaining to our club.
The straw on the back for me was a software cleanup effort that for some reason falls on our marketing team. All offices in our company use a software that, however outdated, they won’t switch to (and it makes sense-that would be a huge task), but in finding flaws in the system, they discovered that our referral reports were missing information such as practice names for our referrals, so it is put on us weekly to spend time going back and cleaning up that software.
This, along with randomly added responsibilities such as going through office calls and having to report on them in an excel sheet, doing an entire email campaign for one specific practice because my manager can’t say no, and the general miscommunication of everyone in our company has made me grow resentful.
My manager visited my city a few weeks ago and we traveled together to different practices to chat and see where they were at with marketing. It seemed like every chance she got, she would take digs at me to make me seem like a bimbo airhead who was only good for conversation (before I did asset management, I was a cheerleader for a pro sports team).
It all feels so targeted and unrelated at the same time, but I can’t help but question if I should bring any of this up on our 1x1 this week that she emailed me about today (on Sunday no less lol)
Please let me know if I’m being dramatic and I’ll shut my case and leave lol.

2024.05.20 00:49 RSN_Loan_Some How to Optimize Game?

I have a decent computer, a bit dated, but still runs solidly with Ryzen 5 3600, 32gb RAM, and an AMD5700. I have no problems playing MOBAs or MMOs on very high settings.
With BAR, I will on occasion crash and be forced to rejoin the game. The rejoining process only buffers 3 to 5 seconds at a time. This can take 15mins or more depending on the game state. Often, the game ends before I can rejoin.
Are there any tips to speed this process up or optimize my computer for the game in general? Are there plans to make this rejoining process more smooth?

2024.05.20 00:41 PossibleRate4380 Anyone else feel like online dating is a waste and is impossible?

Im only a 22yr old male and wouldnt think finding a date would be impossible but i guess i got that wrong, been on as many dating apps as i can find like tinder , bumble ,badoo just to name a few and they are all terrible , the ones that are even worse are the ones that require payment to even start a conversation like match or pof or eharmony
Most of the time most of the accounts that send likes to my accounts are bots or arent even interested they dont even read messages that get sent , they just pile up until they unmatch or i do.
Ive heard of speed dating but theres barely any places in my area for it so its near enough impossible
Anyone else feel this way?

Delta 757 out of Burke Lakefront?
Anyone know why Delta is flying a 757 into and out of Burke Lakefront? I thought maybe FR24 was wrong but I just unmistakably heard it over my house. I can’t book any Delta flights from there so I’m just really curious.

2024.05.19 23:56 taclovitch RBC Brooklyn Half — Missed PR, Wrongly Estimated Fitness, and Learning The Hard Way

I just finished the RBC Brooklyn Half yesterday, after a 12-week training program. I’d built up a lot of expectations for the race, for a whole host of interrelated reason (that I’ll unpack in the body of this thing); all those expectations, unfortunately, caused me to get carried away, and made my experience of the race overall 1) unenjoyable while I was running and 2) disappointing after I finished.
I’m a teacher, and I frequently relay this paraphrasing of a Confucius quote to my kids: “We can either learn how to act by imagining consequences and reflecting, which is best; or by watching others make mistakes, which is hard (though not for us). The most difficult way to learn is through experience, but if that’s what it takes, then that’s what it takes.” One of my top-upvoted comments of all time is in this sub, telling people to not ruin a race for themselves by over-fixating on time-goals at the expense of enjoying their race.
And yet—

B Sub 1:35 No
C Finally Pace Myself Properly No

Split Pace Time
5k 7:04 21:55
10k 7:20 44:42
15k 7:12 1:07:03
20k 8:23 1:33:03
Finish 7:55 1:38:2X

Background Context

I started running in Oct of ‘22, and caught the bug. I ran a half in April of ‘23 in 1:47, and loved the distance. I built base over the summer to ~30-35 mpw, and then trained for the Philly Half in Nov of ‘23. Ended up getting a 1:38:0X in that race, which was really exciting. More exciting was that I approximately even-split that race — my second half took ~30 seconds longer than the first. I left that race feeling exactly how I wanted to — like a washcloth wrung out completely. I felt like that race & time represented the absolute best of my ability, given my current level of fitness; and I felt like I tried my best the whole way through.
Last important piece of context re: diagnosing this race’s disappointment: between Oct of ‘22 and Nov ‘23 I went from ~240 lbs avg to ~195 lbs average. My lowest weight dipped to the high 180s, but I stabilized around 190 pretty quickly.

Training

I used Runna to train for Philly and really enjoyed the experience. My organizational skills are pretty lacking, and I spend 100% of them in other areas of my life — so I enjoy using an app that offloads some of that cognitive lift for me, fully worth the sub during training blocks.
As far as milage, I managed:
Week Miles (Ran / Goal)
1 25 / 33 mi mi (missed 2 runs from travel)
2 32 / 36 mi (missed 1 run b/c travel)
3 38 /38 mi
4 12 / 20 mi (deload, missed 2 runs from illness)
5 28 / 38 mi (missed 2 runs from illness carried over from previous week)
6 40 / 40 mi
7 43 / 43 mi
8 23 / 23 mi
9 50 / 43 mi (extended 2 easy runs by ~3 miles apiece)
10 43 / 40 mi
11 29 / 35 mi (missed 1 run due to illness)
12 23 / 23 mi (including race).
As I’m sure you can already see, I missed a meaningful amount of runs due to illness/other life interruption. Concurrent with all this is the fact that my wife is due with our 2nd child in, well, like a week and a half from now; so a lot of the missed runs in weeks 1-5 also reflect a dramatic net increase in my responsibilities b/c of my wife feeling out of it / not being able to get as much done as normal (no shade at all; she’s literally building a new human that wasn’t there before). Overall I got ~92% of all milage done, running 388 miles during these 12 weeks. Mistake #1: I didn’t adjust my time goals in light of missing workouts; I figured if I just worked harder to “catch up,” I would be fine.
The plan included 2 quality sessions a week — 1 tempo run and 1 interval session, and the weekend long run frequently had pace thrown in. I vastly prefer tempo to interval running — personally, I cite being ~200 lbs as the reason. Once I get going, it’s easy to keep going, but frequent stops & starts just burn energy that I can’t afford to lose. Mistake #2: as I trained, my weight went from the high 190s to the high 200s, and I raced at ~207 lbs. I wasn’t consistent w/ nutrition during training, and the associated stress of my job, as well as parenting & chores usually handled by 2 people being done mostly by me — I often used lil’ snacks as a quick dopamine fix (adhd heads out there, you know what I’m talking about.)

Pre-Race

I wasn’t sure I’d be able to run the race in the first place — my first daughter (now 7) was born at 36 weeks, and I anticipated my second needing the same (choleostasis enjoyers, rise up). Instead, though, this baby seems primed to go the distance — so I got equal parts excited and nervous to be able to deliver on all my training.
I’d cut my time by 9 minutes from my first to the second half, and tried to be conservative in aiming to cut ~5 minutes between these cycles — so I aimed to run 7:00-7:05 for the race, dipping into the 6:55s if I felt good at the end of the race, and set my A goal for 1:32, and my B goal for 1:35. Mistake #3: I didn’t have any serious qualitative goals, and my quant goals were made too far in advance to be realistic. I also wasn’t proactive in adjusting my goals based on how training was going — despite advocating for that same thing in posts on this sub.
Man, it’s so easy to say smart things, and so hard to actually do them.
About 10 days before my race, I came down with a cough thing that sapped a bit of my energy. Kept me up at night, and sapped ~10-15% of my energy on a given day. The Wednesday before my race I asked my wife, “Do you think 3 days is enough for me to be back at 100%?” And I want to say to other runners out there: if you’re having to ask that question, go ahead and adjust your goals. We’ll tag that as Mistake #4.

The Race

Gorgeous morning. I live ~1.5 miles from the race start, so I walked over to Franklin and then jogged the remaining ~1 mile to the start as a warmup. Skipped bag dropoff for the same reason I don’t like checking bags while flying, did a quick pee (quick pee, long portapotty wait time), and went over to the corral.
My whole “thing” as a runner is that I’m deceptively fast — that is, that I’m most commonly the least-fit looking person out of the people running equivalent paces to myself. When I started running, that gave me a bit of imposter syndrome; any more, I draw on it for motivation. So as I was waiting in Corral C to start, I realized I felt a lot of pressure — to be able to deliver on being fast, to prove that I’m actually fit, whatever. No one outside of myself cares, obviously. But that’s now how this stuff works.

The First 10k — Would’ve Been Great If This Was a 10k

My pacing plan was as follows: don’t exceed 7:00 pace at any point in the first 7 miles; aim for ~7:30-7:45 going up Prospect Park’s big hill; use the downhill at 10k to catch my breath; and use the last 7 miles down Ocean Ave to winch down on speed if I was feeling good, or just hold around 7:05 if I was spent.
I was able to hit the first half of this plan pretty well, as my splits up top suggest. But I could tell, starting as I ran around GAP and into the park, that I was working too hard — the effort I was expending was too much. As I reflect on it now, I realize I was probably in ~1:35 shape (~7:15 splits); but I stubbornly refused to drop down in pace. I noticed my heart rate was in the high 170s as I ran through Prospect Park, where my HM pace usually puts me at 165 on the dot. I tried to tell myself it was race excitement + caffeine. [Arrested Development Narrator Voice: It wasn’t.]
I hit the 10k mark at 45 minutes pretty much on the dot. My 10k PR is 44:0-something. This is when I realized my pacing was probably a bit on the screwed side. I’m fairly capable with distance, and am better at medium-exertion-long-distance than I am at hard-exertion-short-distance (my 10k predicts a slightly better 5k time than I currently race). I thought to myself: “Well, you can always just drop down a bit and hold. What’s the worst that can happen?”

The Worst That Can Happen: AKA You’ll Feel Pretty Silly When You Try to Tell Your 38.5 Week Pregnant Wife That Your Last 6 Miles Were Quote “Unimaginable Suffering” And It “Felt Like It Would Never End”

I had been under the impression that Ocean Ave would be a “gentle downhill,” but had never run it prior to the race. This, dear reader, is a lie. Somehow, the last 6 miles of the race are entirely uphill; or at least, that is what it’ll feel like if you go out 5% over your current level of fitness.
The sun really started to get to me; and while I’d had water & nutrition, my gut wasn’t enjoying it, and I didn’t feel energized or like any second wind was coming. I specifically remember that Mile 9 felt like it took 20 minutes to finish; the last 5k of the race simply wouldn’t arrive.
I pulled off to the side to slow down; first to 7:30, then 7:45, then 8:00, with no respite. My legs were heavy despite feeling fueled — I was just dyin’ out there. My wife had been texting encouragement during the race, and I managed to send her back from my watch at mile 9 “all goals are now out the window,” and it was just about finishing — first, to finish without walking. But I took 2 30-second walk breaks when the fatigue felt unendurable — pulling off to the side and counting down from 30, while getting passed.
That was another feature of the race that made it so challenging — that same dynamic of “being deceptively fast” that I mentioned above came back to bite me, as I got passed continuously by people who’d raced their fitness, rather than their goals, in the first half of the race. That demoralized feeling was incredibly difficult to handle. I hadn’t, before today, understood why someone would quit a race; and now, even though I didn’t quit, I get it.
As I passed mile 11, I realized that, while my initial goal was fully out the window, I could still PB the race, even though my pace between miles 9 and 11 was more than a minute off my goal pace; I’d just need to hold approximately 8:00 pace, and I’d be right up against my prior PB. That didn’t make anything any easier, but it did make me feel like the suffering had a point.
Got an encouraging text from my wife, found some other folks at ~8:00 pace, and tried to lock into that pace next to them. And then I just sort of suffered to the finish line. I don’t know what the views looked like; I’m not sure what the race atmosphere was like. I wish I’d paced myself better so I could have experienced that fully.

Post-Race: Why Don’t They Tell You That You Have to Walk Up Stairs To Get Out of Cyclone Stadium BEFORE You Go Into the Stadium?

Got medal, got water. Drank about 5 consecutive cups of water, and then exited the boardwalk. Texted my wife that it’d been really hard but I finished, and right as I did, a critical mass of finishers arrived such that cell service got knocked out for everyone. Thus began the Long Night of The Soul for me at Cyclone stadium.
I walked in, walked around, realized there wasn’t anything I wanted to do in there, and then tried to go back out; at which point I was told “Exit is out that way,” and I said, “I can’t just go back out? I gotta go upstairs to leave, after running a race? That’s the rule?” The guy who told me didn’t deserve my sass; and I deserved to not go up stairs. Oh well.
I managed to get up the stairs without cramping up (though it was close). I went and looked out over Surf Ave, at everyone walking to and from the race, and just got to sit with my thoughts for a bit. I got myself a bit choked up & had a very dignified little cry at this realization, which I think does fully distill my feelings about the race: “I feel like I tried my hardest, but I don’t feel like I did my best.” I think that we often treat those two statements like they’re interchangeable, but there’s actually a bit of space between those ideas, and my race fell into the gap between them. I both tried very hard the entire time, but also, I could have done a better job pacing myself and picking target times. That disappointment is rough.

To Do Better Next Time

So to conclude this whole long sad love letter to learning: some takeaways, ranked from Most Transferrable (re: life skills) to Most Specific.
  1. Actively listen to ya dang body, fool
Self-explanatory: by setting a goat at the outset of training, and then sort of driving toward it without respect for a lot of recently-added stressors in my life, I didn’t end up running any faster — I just made the running I did do kind of miserable. Next time I intend to use HR & Effort (together!) as a better indication of the pace my body feels comfortable running during the race. We say so much “Trust the taper,” and I think here I’d benefit from reminding myself, “… buuuut the taper doesn’t make impossible things possible.”
  1. Don’t invest so heavily in the quant goal
I got very invested in how proud I would be if I managed to achieve the goal, and that forward-projecting is part of what caused me to overshoot the goal in the first place. Next time around I want to have a process goal to the tune of “Enjoy the race while trying to wring out your body like a washcloth.” Or something; I have time to plan.
  1. Lose 15-20 pounds.
I’m 5’9; I’m strong and I’m heavy. My running has kind of been those two vectors pointing against each other the whole time. But I think I’m at the point where, if I want to be able to sustain 7:00 speeds for more than a 10k, I need to lose some of the excess weight I’m holding onto. I could also do strength training, but I’ve got a baby on the way; heart tells me that getting 7-10% lighter will be a lot easier than getting 7-10% stronger.
So that was training, goals, and next steps. Hopefully, by seeing my mistakes, you’ll be able to avoid them yourself in the future. Hopefully!

2024.05.19 23:43 enz1ey Why is it so hard to find rear calipers to purchase?

I have a 2017 CX-5 and my right-rear brakes need changed almost annually. Every year without fail, it starts sounding like metal on metal grinding even when moving at slower speeds with no brakes applied, the rotors end up ground down on the outer edge as well. I checked out the recalls and TSBs regarding the rear caliper EPB issues, but neither my VIN nor caliper date stamps are applicable.
I figured I'd just buy new calipers at this point, if they help my brakes last just two years instead of one, the calipers would pay for themselves in four years. But for some reason, it's nearly impossible to find any online. I've tried Rock Auto, O'Reilly, AutoZone, Advance, etc. and nobody has them. If they do, it's only the left side.
What gives? Has anybody been able to purchase aftermarket rear calipers for this vehicle? I'm sure the local Mazda dealerships would sell me a single caliper for $400 or so, but for that price I should be able to replace all four of them with PowerStop high-performance calipers.

2024.05.19 23:27 VirtualCapital2838 What’s the worst dating advice you’ve been given?

TL;DR: For me 27M who’s never had a relationship, my male cousins and friends were basically telling me to change who I am entirely to become someone who’s toxic and that my lack of dating was mostly my fault. (For context I was unable to date until I was 25 for reasons mostly beyond my control).
Basically, they were telling me that I am too kind and have a heart of gold but that girls don’t like that. They would then respond saying “why do you think they go for the toxic guys” when I questioned this (all of the people giving me this advice have been in multiple relationships). They also said I don’t have an edge since I don’t drink or have tattoos. I didn’t and still don’t listen to them.
Another told me that it was my fault that my date went badly because I was driving 5mph/10kmhr under the speed limit which caused my date to ask me if “always drive this slow” (For context I was driving without a GPS/ mobile data owing to a plan I was locked in during the pandemic, I was driving in an unfamiliar area and also distracted from talking to my date while relying on directions I printed from Google).

2024.05.19 23:15 Ill-Difficulty7957 MSI Intel i9-13980HX CPU limited to 3.7Ghz/115W! NO LIMITS, NO THROTTLING, no any other reason

On a daily basis I use MSI GP78HX laptop with an Intel i9-13980HX processor, optimized by undervolting, CPU and GPU recently covered with liquid metal, power limits set as PL2 50W and PL1 35W (best temp/performance ratio for daily use in my testing). I use "Silent" mode in MSI Center because it is the only way to achieve silent operation of fans on this laptop. I locked MMIO in ThrottleStop so that the performance profiles (User Scenarios in MSI Center) are only used to change the speed of the fans, not Power Limits anymore. After many hours of trial and error, I finally reached my dream state where I have a laptop that is quiet and extremely efficient. Everything has worked beautifully so far. From time to time I increased the CPU limits to 200W (and ramping fans to maximum using Extreme Performance scenario) to check if peak performance remains the same (200W used by the CPU is the factory value achieved by this laptop in CPU only usage scenario). Recently, after a long break, as usual as a "check" I let the Cinebench R23 test run and got shocked - the CPU uses only 115W, the CPU clock is no more than 3.7Ghz, Cinebench R23 score dropped from 35k to 29k! There is no reason for such a limitation - during the test CPU temperatures do not exceed 75°C, and the "Limits" tab of ThrottleStop is empty - there are no limits. Not even one! I made no changes, neither in the system nor the BIOS. I'm angry because once again Microsoft/Intel/MSI messed up the performance of my laptop with some silent updates, which I spent a lot of my time optimizing. As if that wasn't enough, it turned out that I don't have system restore configured - which means I now have to search for the cause manually. I'm so angry. Now I'm asking for help - how should I troubleshoot this issue? As far as I can see, the BIOS version hasn't changed - it's still the same, dated last November, so it's unlikely to be the issue The only thing I remember is about 2 weeks ago there was an update to MSI Center, so I uninstalled it and installed the previous version - unfortunately, it did not change anything, the limitation to 115W is still active, which is extremely annoying.
Even if nobody could help me with this issue - did you noticed similar issue too on your 13th/14th gen HX CPUs laptops?

2024.05.19 22:43 temp_throwaway_123 What is the point?

It's already a struggle to get up in the morning. I need to use an alarm to wake up after 10+ hours of sleep, and I still wake up tired. Physically and mentally. And yet I get comments about how nice it must be to "laze around in bed" as if to say I'm lazy.
I don't want to try any more. Every change I made in my life has not changed the bigger picture at all. It's like I'm being punished for trying. For example
The things I want are out of reach. A place of my own. A job that pays enough to afford that. To get the hell away from where I currently live.
I don't really understand why I bother continuing my existence. Nothing really matters in the end. Anyone I help will eventually die. All good causes will eventually fade away. Everything I create will eventually be destroyed.
My life is pointless and nothing can bring meaning to it. My life is miserable and nothing brings joy to it. So can anyone tell me why I should bother any more?

Super low key, very casual – 6-9 dates, ~10-minutes each. Event take about 2 hours max.
Prompts are given for each date and the event is moderated via your phone. We text you what time your date is, who you're dating, and give you a prompt (i.e. "Would you rather be a master of every language, or a master of every musical instrument?". You find them, have a fun conversation, and input Match or Pass. That's the essence of the entire event.
Age-ranges are "soft" so for example, if you're 38, you can attend the group for 41-51. Likewise, if you're 43, you can attend the 31-41 group.
If you're single (and/or know anyone else who is single), please give this a try! At the very least, you get to talk with a few people and you never know who you'll meet. And I want to reiterate – these are extremely casual and low-key. Let me know if you have any questions :)

2024.05.19 22:29 Petragor07 The 13th Predator (Skaven crossover) - Part 10 FINALE

Memory transcription subject: Captain Sovlin, Federation Fleet Command
Date: [REDACTED]
The force assembled at the outskirts of the Skaven home system was larger than any I had ever seen. It was a rainbow of ships, each decorated with different colors and symbols communicating their allegiances. I kept one eye on the Glorious display of interspecies cooperation as I looked to my first officer.
“Wow Recel.” I said with mirth. “Just… Wow! I know I asked you to bring reinforcements, but did you really have to drag along half the federation?”
Recel didn’t respond right away. He looked past me, out into the infinite void and scratched his head, seemingly deep in thought. But then, he snapped out of it and turned his gaze to me with a proud expression. “It just seemed like the right thing to do sir.”
I couldn’t help but agree. This battle would surely go down in history as one of the federation’s greatest victories, accomplished through the cooperation of the herd. “Indeed.” I simply replied before transmitting to the Fleet. “All hands, Full speed ahead!”
Thrusters lit up across the formation as we advanced, the Skaven homeworld coming into view. The bridge crew was tense, but I didn’t share their worry. As far as I was concerned the battle was already won, superweapon or otherwise.
A beep from the sensor station notified us that the Skaven ships had come within range of our scanners. As images of the predator vessels were distributed across the fleet, there was a collective sigh of relief. They were much fewer in number this time, only a handful of freighters and a few dozen fighters. The Flagship was at the head of the formation, but crucially, the bell on top was still broken. Clearly, Kalsim’s sacrifice had not been in vain.
With this new information in mind, I addressed the fleet once more. “Looks like this will be easier than we thought. Maintain dispersed formation, I don’t want any surprises.”
“Captain!” The crewmate Manning the sensor station spoke up. “We’ve got more detailed scans of the Predator fleet. The flagship… it’s absolutely packed with life-forms! Same goes for the freighters.”
An evacuation effort? Then why were they headed right for us? They couldn’t possibly get past this many guns. “Ready weapons, I want them shot down as soon as they’re in range. Don’t let them get away.”
However, just before we reached effective weapons range, an alarm rang out. Recel checked his pad and read out a report. “Predator sighting in the Engineering deck! We’re under attack!”
“What?!!” I exclaimed. The Fleet’s communication channels became flooded with chatter, similar reports coming in from across the formation. A hunch began forming in my mind. “Sensors! Give me an update on those lifesigns!”
The crewmate squinted at his screen. “They’re… gone! The ships are empty!”
“Teleportation.” I deduced. “So that’s their gambit.” I drew my pistol from its holster, prompting the rest of the bridge crew to do the same. “All hands! Prepare to repel boarders!”
Superior Skryre Thought-Memory transcription subject: Oivit, Gojid Exterminator
Time-Date: The Grand-Great Deception
My squad took cover at the edges of the hallway, and we raised our rifles and flamethrowers at the Bulkhead in front of us. The poor engineers on the other side had managed to seal them just before being overwhelmed by the predators, giving us time to set up a defense at the natural choke point. This in turn would allow the command crew to fortify the bridge even further, but I naturally hoped that we would be able to repel them here.
Not long after we had taken positions, a green jet of energy appeared in the bulkhead’s side, beginning to cut a rectangular opening through the thick metal. We aimed at the center of the nearly completed portal, but suddenly the cutting stopped just short of completion. What were they-
BWOOSH
A fiery explosion tore open the bulkhead, destroying the neatly carved lines and causing the edges of the barrier to bend out, like a metallic flower. Despite the protection our cover and fireproof suits afforded us, the explosion rattled us, and we simply cowered behind our defenses for several seconds.
I was the first to cautiously peek out at the smoking remains of the boundary. A predator in red armor staggered through the opening, seemingly as shell-shocked as we were. I remembered my training and brought my rifle to bear. With plenty of time to aim, I fired a burst of plasma through the damned thing’s head, killing it instantly.
This galvanized the other predators, and a barrage of thin streaks of lightning rushed out at us from beyond the Bulkhead. We returned fire, but with the dense smoke we couldn’t tell whether we were inflicting casualties. As the blind firefight continued with no casualties on our side, I thought we’d be capable of holding them here until reinforcements arrived. But it wasn’t long before something besides energy blasts began to rush through the opening.
A wave of gangly predators rushed through the breach. Their scurrying quadrupedal run kept them mostly below the continued fusillade, but some were inevitably scorched dead when the shot reached too low, or a predator head too high. Our flamethrowers were ready for them however, and quickly spat a torrent of fire in their path. The front rank of creatures tried to stop at the last second, but the momentum of those behind them was too great, and they were either trampled underfoot or pushed directly into the inferno.
The charge was fully incinerated, yet a few of the burning predators continued their charge by sheer momentum alone, crossing the short distance between themselves and the flamethrower team, and plowing into them in their frenzied death throes.
More elite predators moved up in the wake of the devastated assault, brutes in red armor firing their lightning guns at us. The firefight quickly grew much more intense, both exterminators and Skaven killing each other at a rapid pace.
A group of creatures in black rags rushed out from behind their armored fellows, tossing primitive throwing weapons at us as they went. One of them struck me in the arm, piercing through my suit and leaving a small cut. Unbothered by the glancing hit, I raised my rifle to return fire, but suddenly found that I couldn’t feel my limb, nor pull the trigger.
As the strange numbness spread, I lost my balance, falling to the floor in a limp heap. I watched helplessly as my comrades lost ground, and the rearmost part of our formation turned and ran. The savage beasts hollered with bloodlust, giving chase.
As they disappeared around a corner, a new group of predators emerged from the broken bulkhead. One of their ‘Grey Seers’, accompanied by a multitude of servants. They looked more like cargo wagons than living beings, each hunchbacked from the weight of the numerous packs and crates they carried.
Their leader looked around at the walls before pointing one out, and another predator carrying a multitude of tools went up to it and unscrewed one of the panels covering it. Discarding the panel, it pulled up a strange green drill, and began digging through the thick layers of armor, quickly carving out a cavity in the side of the hull.
As it climbed in and continued drilling, the other predators followed suit. To my horror, I and several of my dead squadmates were picked up and brought along, dragged into the newly created space. Still paralyzed, I could only despair as they picked up the metal panel, sealing the tunnel behind us.
( - - - - - - - - - - )
The Extermination fleet breathed a sigh of relief as their ships managed to repel their boarders one by one. With the assault repelled, they moved into orbit of their target and unleashed their countless weapons upon the planet, bringing the End Times to the Old World.
After the annihilation was confirmed, the vessels of the fleet separated, each charting a course back to their native systems. They returned as heroes, massive celebrations held on every planet in the federations to glorify the monumental victory. And while the people celebrated in the streets, the Shadow Caste began work on their latest propaganda campaign, intending to convince future generations that the ‘Skaven’ had never existed.
As the military vessels were abandoned by their reveling crews, hunchbacked shapes emerged not long thereafter. Creeping out of cargo bays and maintenance hatches, they would briefly sniff the air to ensure the coast was clear, before scurrying off into the wilderness. There they dug holes, at first only cautiously. But it wasn’t long before they began to expand, tunneling beneath the very cities they had avoided.
They did not stop there. Camouflaged rafts were constructed, populating the abandoned oceans with dozens of ramshackle, barely floating warrens. Some snuck aboard Arxur raiding vessels when they arrived, in order to settle the planets said vessels returned to. The particularly bold began to kidnap small numbers of surface dwellers, using them as slaves, food, or the test subjects for grotesque experiments.
When they finally amassed the resources, massive antennae were erected, laced with green crystal and hidden underground, powerful enough to penetrate the crust of their respective planets. With these, encoded signals could be sent between the infested planets. Some messages were declarations of cunning, might, or other forms of superiority. Some were threats, wishing death and destruction upon rivals several lightyears away. But most were devoted to coordinating various plots, with one plot in particular standing far above the rest.
The Galactic Vermintide, to gnaw at the entire galaxy until it belonged only to the Skaven.

2024.05.19 22:19 uwuangelbaby First Deployment & Marriage

Disclaimer: please scroll if you have no actual advice to offer. I’m in a rough place mentally as it is… thank you. This may be considered a vent.
To start, my husband and I have been together for 5 and a half years. We started dating in the very beginning of 2019 and he joined the Navy at the very end of May in 2022. We only have each other and that’s how it’s been all of our relationship. He’s 22 and I’m 23. We don’t have any kids. We’re a little bit halfway through deployment as of right now and I’m definitely experiencing a strain in our marriage unlike any other we’ve been through. I know it may seem silly to vent to strangers on the internet but I don’t know of any resources to use and I have no one to talk to about this. I’m currently in North Dakota with my sister and her husband that are both Air Force. In March I had to break our lease for our apartment and I drove all the way to North Dakota. In Utah I hit a really big deer going 85 on the interstate and the speed limit was 80. I’ve never been in an accident before then. It shook me up pretty hard when the police told me if I would’ve swerved I would’ve ended up flipped in a ditch on the side of the road. My husband was my first phone call before calling 911. I struggled telling him what happened because we had just gotten a 2024 RAV4 XSE Hybrid back in the beginning of January right before he left. I didn’t want him to be angry or upset about the car but a deer running out in the middle of an interstate at 3:30 am was out of my control… I thought for sure the car was totaled because the frame looked slightly bent. The cop was sure it was too, my front end was completely wrecked. Thank God it’s not but I’ve been car-less since the end of March. My mental health has been horrible and I’ve only spoke up about it one time to my husband because the last thing I want him to worry about while he’s stuck on a ship is if his wife is okay. I’m not. I’ve always been independent before him but I found myself too comfortable in our marriage to the point where I don’t want to function without him. I’m happy he’s getting to explore all these countries we could have only dreamed about visiting before the Navy but at the same time a part of me is struggling here because of all the stress I’ve endured in such little time. I understand that ship life is not easy and I know I personally would not be able to do it so I respect him deeply for that and I recognize his hard work and sacrifice for us. The only problem is he invalidates my feelings a lot and it hurts me. In the first two-three months of deployment I had to break our lease, move all of our things alone and drive 25 hours away from home, wrecked our car halfway to North Dakota & when I got here I had to rehome one of our dogs which has been tough on me. I communicated this with him and his response was basically something along the lines of “well at least you can get up and go wherever you want, I’m stuck on a ship” I just feel as if he resents me now for being on the civilian side of things. He took a deployment/relationship class before he left and left me with notes or advice to remember whenever things get hard and I’ve read them a lot. One of the main pieces of advice it gave was to not compare our situations to one another or to think that one person has it harder in our marriage. To not invalidate each others struggles and feelings but that’s all he’s done to me. That is also another reason I’ve been suffering. I’ve never had panic attacks before he left but with all the stress I’ve endured they started randomly. I break down in silence because I can’t be alone with myself. I’ve tried picking up hobbies such as the gym, taking our dog for walks on trails every evening and even watching my nephew while my family is at work. Nothing is working and all I can think about is the fork in our relationship and how alone I’ve been through all of these hardships. I’m trying to work on myself to be a better individual and the spouse that my husband deserves but I don’t feel effort or consideration on his end. I don’t know what to do. I’ve tried talking to him about this but it’s hard to have these type of talks via email because it’s not the same as it would be in person. We’ve already agreed to marriage counseling if we can’t talk things over by ourselves when he gets back. I know it doesn’t get easier with more deployments to come which is why I want to work on things during this first deployment. I just want to give up at this point but to me my husband is worth all the suffering and hard days plus more. He is the reason I get up everyday and keep pushing even though I so badly wish everything would just end…
Has anyone else struggled maintaining their relationship on deployment & if so what steps did you take to work on it or fix it? Do things get better when they’re back home? Am I overthinking things?

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Mixture of high-end gaming and day-to-day work/life things (i.e. writing research papers, surfing the web, watching movies/videos, etc.)
>**What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?*\*
$2500 USD (Prefer to stay under $2000 if possible).
>**When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.*\*
ASAP.
>**What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc\)*\*
I basically need everything. I have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse already (details below).
>**Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?*\*
United States, KY. No Microcenter near me.
>**If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.*\*
Monitor - I have a HP OMEN - 27" IPS LED QHD 240Hz FreeSync and G-SYNC Compatible Gaming Monitor with HDR (DisplayPort, HDMI, USB) - Black
Mouse: Logitech - PRO X SUPERLIGHT Lightweight Wireless Optical Gaming Mouse with HERO 25K Sensor - White
Keyboard: I have a HyperX - Alloy Core Full-size Wired Gaming Membrane Keyboard with RGB Lighting - Black
>**Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?*\*
Tbh I have no idea what this means lol. Probably not.
>**Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)*\*
Prioritizing CPU and GPU. I primarily play fortnite and want to do so competitively (so a great CPU is a must).
>**Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?*\*
Black, LED lighting. Regardless, I prioritize value/utility over appearance.
>**Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?*\*
Will need a copy of Windows 11 but can be separate from the build budget.
>**Extra info or particulars:*\*
I'll have to start out playing on Wifi primarily (I currently have 111 mbps download and 9 mbps upload speeds). Will likely be upgrading internet soon and using a wired ethernet connection moving forward.
Thanks for helping out!! First time builder

2024.05.19 21:53 mikesmith1370 NY, unknown suspended license, resulting in court hearing.

I was recently pulled over for speeding. It was a school zone at 11am, but not one broken up by morning and evening hours. Otherwise, I was within the speed limit. That being said, apparently due to removing insurance for a vehicle I sold, but before the title transfer was complete, my license was suspended. No DOT notice that I'm aware of, and I probably would have never known, at least until it was time to renew my license. Suffice to say, I now have to go to court. Online resources say I could face a $300 fine or 30 days in jail. My question is, would it be worth to consult and/or hire a lawyer for this? It has been over a decade since I've been pulled over, so I'm not that well versed in how to proceed. The court date is also on my kids field day, so I don't know if a lawyer could go in my place? I'd certainly like to avoid jail, but am fine with paying whatever fines. Any advice is appreciated.

2024.05.19 21:53 Inertigo CM Review 5/19/2024

Golden Bender 500 gems Score 0.0*
Bender Rich combo made with no objects. This cm is for the PC only and as such, is an extremely niche cm. Medium Bodyguard Sturdy and Trait Only Cheer All. This PC was only available once in a box 2+ years ago. Otherwise, he’s only been available in golden turds or legendary pc stones. Only PC only combo in game. If you have the pc and need the cm this is a rare opportunity for you, otherwise, it’s basically worthless.
Joystick Steve 500 gems Score 2.0
Steve’s toy combo made only with Pro Pain! Lower Punch and Payback. One of the funniest combos in the game. Steve’s main Toy combo Dating Game Steve is pretty decent, so this can be paired with that, but otherwise there are better toy options.
Board Game Cleveland 1000 stones Score 5.0
Cleveland Toy combo made with all objects. Medium Motivate, Craze and Burn. Decent combo, but in the world of Toy, this doesn’t stand up to The Wheel, possibly usable in Family Guy, but nothing great.
NRA Member 1000 stones Score 3.0
Farnsworth Armed combo made with Pantry gGuns. One of the better pantry guns combo with medium punch, gas, and bomb. Only issue is Farnsworth’s hp and this combo has no defense. Also need a specialized deck to get the most out of it.
Scale:
9-10 Top of the Top: I’d spend 2250 in gems for cm2 if I had to. Type of combo I would pursue CM5 on
7-8 Still Darn Good: I’d drop 4500 in mastery stones for cm2 or 500 gems for cm1. Maybe I invest 2000 stones for cm1
5-6 Good: I’d throw 1000 mastery stones for cm1, maybe take it to cm2 at a later date
3-4 Average: If I was loaded with mastery stones I would think about
1-2 Poor: There’s something there, but I’m not spending resources on it
0 Lousy: Really Kong, take it out of the game
