So I’m a Project Leader at my current job which means I essentially manage the project team and handle the clients.
This week, I’m not sure if it’s me but I’m having a really tough week with handling them.
I have several projects that are starting to be fabricated “construction for info” after a very long design process. I also managed the design as this is my background.
Earlier this week a client tried to blame me for something that is out of my scope, my company is not making, and the only part that I was supposed to do I sent over 6 months ago. I also made a schedule that I told them they would need to confirm with the responsible parties. The person who is making this thing hasn’t even been contracted yet, due to their incredibly lengthy contracting process, which has slowed down the whole production timeline. Additionally, their timeline is not aligning with the short production schedule the client is pushing due to their own internal processes regarding contracting.
I was really taken aback by this and I clapped back and told her that I wouldn’t accept responsibility for this as it was never a part of my scope. That I have done everything I can regarding this, and that the client hasn’t appointed anyone until now, and we’ve been talking about it for months. She got upset and left the meeting and later I apologized, but I was really not ok with being blamed for something publicly which was clearly not my fault.
Fast forward to the end of the week and another client is asking us to make a change that will slow down our production timeline.
While this part is a little bit my fault because they verbally mentioned this some time ago, their drawings have been fed to me slowly so it’s only recently become clear that there is an issue. I was so annoyed that the client is making this a sticking point , because in reality, it’s a very small thing and the amount of time it would take to fix it doesn’t seem worth it. So we went back and forth on it in a very intense exchange, where we both got annoyed at each other, but eventually we calmed down and talked about a way to solve it. I felt better about it at the end, and it was generally a productive discussion.
However, I am wondering if there is something wrong with how I am approaching this. Like, I fundamentally work very hard and everyone seems very happy with the work I’m doing, but this week just seems to be this week of one thing after the other. Is this just part of the job? Should I just take this as part of learning how to deal with situations? These are some of the most complicated projects I have ever worked on and the learning curve has been steep, so maybe it’s just that I am physically tired and want them to be finished?

Perhaps better suited for a legal subreddit, but I currently have an agreement to help with some project management subcontracting work, and my client is really starting to demand a lot more of my time.
We discussed that the agreement would cover roughly 10hrs/week (40hrs/month), but the services they are asking me to do are really starting to add up. I’m halfway through May and already at ~33 hours.
The contract is for 5 months, and I’ve already worked two. The first month tracked right around 40 hours of work, but this month is tracking higher than what we agreed, and the next two months will be certainly be higher than 40 hours based on the project timeline, so I need to have a discussion with them.
It’s a flat fee so we didn’t have a strict 40hrs/month of work written out in the SOW, but we had a handshake agreement that would be the benchmark. What’s the best way to approach this? Ask them to pay higher fees? Reallocate money/hours from the last month of the project when work will be lighter? Add an amendment to SOW for overage charges at an hourly rate?

The Tree of Knowledge is the archetype of all narrative trees and anchors mathematical laws and logic, around its lower parts are the Low Elder Gods, in the middle are the Death Brothers, near its peak are the High Elder Gods (who could destroy the tree by accident), and at the top is the Almighty. I'm trying to create a template in Notion for some pages I have.
I have a grand Music Projects page where I have the pages for all the tracks I'm working on. And I need a template for the various sections I need to work on (Mixing, Producing, Arrangement). However, all that I found was that the template appears for databases when I don't really need a database for this purpose.
And, I already have the projects as pages within another (overarching page), so I don't want to make a database from all of that. Is there a way to make a template within those pages that will appear for any new page that I make?

So i have this worldbuilding+ writing project ive been working on for a year but i have a problem which is I've written too many conflicting accounts of the worlds history and its different factions, this can be something as minor as the main characters name and as major as the creation of the world and how one of the factions work (ie my main antagonists who in one version are ruled by four robots called the machine kings and in another it's a more traditional emperor whos immortal via magic powered machines)
How do i decide which version of events is better? Do i attempt to fuse my concepts into one? Do i just write multiple timelines?

Does one of you know if there is a possibility to define which layers will get added automatically to your layer stack after creating a new project (like the empty paint layer that always is there after creating a new file)? For the current project I´m working on I´d like the team to have the same stack of pre-defined default layers to start each new file with. As far as I understood, templates will sadly not include that data. Of course, there always is the option to save the layer stack as a smart material that can be shared with the team but I was curious if there is a more straightforward way to approach this. Nearly a week ago I released a master template for live recording in Ableton 12, featuring 110 tracks ready to take to your session and kick start your recording.
Since then, I've had a few people ask if this was available in Ableton 10 or 11, so I went back and created them in previous versions too!

Let’s start with the good stuff first:
I work in a fairly large lab with a relatively huge amount of funding (P01s, several R01s, startups, you name it). Life with funding is pretty good. I make a good deal above the base NIH postdoc salary, and have access to great collaborators, tech, other networks, etc. I’ve been in this position for about a year, and there are some really promising avenues for postdoc —> faculty positions. The work is interesting, cutting edge, and my PI has invested A LOT of time, money, and resources into my training thus far. (I’m really the only subject-matter expert for his biggest grant, and we have worked together to troubleshoot and get some pretty critical assays up and running after years of relative stagnation). Because of this, I’ve become one of his “favorites.”
Now… onto the bad stuff…
However, with ample funding comes increased pressure to deliver data and we are severely understaffed. The majority of personnel in my lab are miserable, and several key personnel are considering leaving. Pipelines are highly disfunctional, and despite an organized effort by several staff members to correct things, nothing changes. Our PI heard our grievances, listened to our organized proposal for change…. And basically dismissed everything while doubling down on the negatives we all tried to correct. There is a huge emphasis on overworking “driven” staff members to their limits, complete disregard for work life balance, and a really shitty communication style that is rapidly disintegrating collaborations with other big names in the field. (24 hour turnarounds for data requests, unreasonable timelines, harassing collaborators on nights and weekends… you get the idea).
The Problem:
I’m working beyond my limits, tackling several assays, trying to lead other scientists on two projects, I’m exhausted… and it’s still not enough. My PIs solution is to offload some of my responsibilities on other staff that are already overburdened and have a foot out the door.
I think it’s pretty obvious I should recognize a sinking ship when I see one… but several of us are planning on leaving in the next few months which would probably result in a HUGE loss for my lab (existing personnel and PI), likely costing them any chance of renewing several critical projects. So, in time, mass walkout —> mass layoffs for those that remain… and the loss of what would have been really critical data for the field.
If I stay, I’d continue to be overworked, but leading a lot of these efforts would result in some pretty awesome papers and connections for new positions. I could deal with that for maybe another year or so. It could be great for my career, and staying would help us renew the projects that everyone else relies on for their salary support, etc.
But that also means another year of being miserable, making less than I am worth (postdoc salary) in an area I despise living in (spending 2.5 hours in my daily commute), tight finances, etc etc.
I can see that academia is a broken system, and am heavily considering jumping ship to government or industry. Possibly the sooner the better…. Or do I stick it out and squeeze every positive outcome from this postdoc as possible, cause less damage to the group, and keep positive ties with my influential PI??
(I think I already know the answer, but advice would be appreciated).
