I love any and all things nerdy. I find solace in the worlds of imagination, whether it's delving into epic fantasy realms or navigating virtual landscapes.
When I'm not lost in the pages of a gripping fantasy novel, you'll likely find me wielding a controller in intense gaming sessions or honing my skills with a bow in archery - because yes, it's nerdy now, and I'm all about embracing it.
My love for storytelling extends beyond books and games; I'm a cinephile at heart, always eager to dissect the latest film or binge-watch the newest TV shows.
And of course, what's a nerdy passion without a deep dive into the colorful realms of comics or the immersive world of Dungeons and Dragons? Whether it's debating the latest superhero plot twist or strategizing my next D&D campaign, I'm always up for a lively discussion.

2024.05.18 09:21 Powermetalbunny A Gift From The Void

The new gift-specific dialogue from the 1.6 update has me absolutely tickled pink! This one especiallyā€¦ I also havenā€™t practiced my creative writing in a while, and I decided it needed to happen sooner rather than later, so here, have a short story! Sorry if it's boringā€¦ Iā€™m a little rusty!
ā€œA Gift From The Voidā€
It was only yesterdayā€¦ No one was quite sure where it had come from. There had been a sinister cackling noise ringing through the night air and Abigail had mentioned seeing an unidentifiable shape soaring through the sky during her walk home from the cemetery. The townsfolk gossiped and speculated about what it could have been that evening, but by the next morning they still hadnā€™t come to any reasonable explanation. It was only yesterday, and yet the entire village seemed to have already put it out of their minds and moved on. The scandal and chatter following the ā€œAnchovy Soup Incidentā€ at the Summer Luau several years back had lasted far longer than thisā€¦ Even now Sam was still getting sideways glances whenever he got within a 20 foot radius of the soup cauldron, but this just blows over in less than a day? The priorities of small town people were strange.
Things had gone back to that same semblance of backwater, middle-of-nowhere kind of normal, and now the night had become just the same as any other Friday evening. Sebastian was playing a round of billiards with Sam, and while Sam was preoccupied with lining up the cue with his intended target ball, the farmer strolled into the saloon and up to the bar. Heads turned and raised to the newcomer for a moment before returning to whatever it was that had been previously holding their attention. Sebastian caught the sudden flourish of movement out of his periphery, but didnā€™t pay it much mind. The farmer ordered a coffee and a plate of the nightā€™s special, and struck up a conversation with Gus about a peculiar egg that had materialized in their coop seemingly out of nowhere the night before. Apparently theyā€™d decided to tuck it away into the incubator and wait to see whatā€¦ if anything hatched from it.
Sebastian had never really been one to eavesdrop, but the wait for Sam to make his move was becoming boring, and sometimes the stories that passed around the saloon on Friday evenings got interesting depending on who all was involved. The story didnā€™t really go too far into detail. The farmer poked at their food until it had cooled enough to not scald the inside of their mouth, then they took a few bites before bringing up the events of the previous evening. What first started off as a funny story seemed to turn into some deep discussion with Gus about the mysteries of life. Eventually, Willy and Elliott were caught up in the mirth and it turned into a medley of strange tales from faraway lands and once-upon-a-times. Obviously exaggerated sightings of fearsome creatures on a midnight stormy sea, legends of colossal white whales, references to works written by masters of the mystery genre, as well as some from a trashy neo-noir novel or two that had probably been picked up from a bookstore clearance shelf.
Willy stroked his beard and mused about some daring battle between himself and a fish of questionable proportions that seemed to grow larger each time he told the story. Sebastian had heard this one before. The fight over the line had gone on for over an hour before the shadow of the fish rose near to the surface, and just before Willy could land the monster of a catch, it dove below again, taking the whole fishing rod overboard and nearly Willy himself with it.
Elliott gulped down the last few swigs of ale in his tankard, slapped the farmer firmly on the back, snorted and chuckled in an ungraceful yet jolly display that only ever crept out of him when heā€™d had a bit too much to drink.
ā€œThat fish becomes more miraculous each time he talks about it!ā€ Elliott shook his head and smiled as he leaned almost a little too far forward. There was a slight sway to his posture and he tried to straighten his body back in line with the barstool. ā€œTo life, and her many little silly tricks of fate, my friends!ā€ he declared. He raised the empty mug, and with his free hand, delicately tucked a few strands of stray hair behind his ear with the tips of his fingers. He rested his elbow back on the bar before he could lose his balance and sighed contently. Elliottā€™s cheeks were practically glowing red at this point and it was a wonder that he wasnā€™t slurring his words yet.
ā€œAye, youā€™ve all heard my fish story havenā€™t ye?ā€ Willy chuckled. ā€œHow ā€˜bout the one about the Baba Yaga?ā€ the farmerā€™s head tilted and they gazed curiously at the fisherman. Willy rested his foot on the crossbar of the barstool, lifted the rim of his hat out of his line of sight, and leaned into the counter. ā€œSome know ā€˜er as the cannibal witchā€¦ others say sheā€™s just a misunderstood haggard olā€™ woman who lives alone out in woods or marshes. Itā€™s said she lives a rickety old house that stands on chicken feet, and she likes to lure weary travelers into ā€˜er home, only to gobble ā€˜em up once they let their guard down. Apparently sheā€™s especially fond of the taste of childrenā€¦ā€ He laughed in a hoarse tone and made strange spider-like gestures with his calloused hands as if he were telling campfire stories to a group of kids. The farmerā€™s nose wrinkled at the outlandish notion of some feral old woman devouring toddlers, and Willy laughed heartily at their reaction. ā€œI think that last part the parents like to add into the story to frighten the little ones. It keeps ā€˜em from wondering into the forests and swamps alone at night.ā€
Sebastian rolled his eyes and glanced back to the pool table. He watched the cue ball clack into the twelve before the twelve bounced off the barriers in the corner of the table and rolled slowly to a stop on the felt surface without pocketing. Sam huffed and stood back upright.
ā€œYou really arenā€™t very good at this, are you?ā€ Seb chimed as he returned his full attention to the game at hand. Sam grinned and laughed.
ā€œNope!ā€
ā€œWatch and learnā€¦.ā€ Sebastian took aim at the cue ball, and after a single firm strike, drove it into the tiny gap between the two and seven. The cue stopped hard, but the two and seven sped to the opposite corners of the foot of the table, each dropping into one of the corner pockets simultaneously. Sam scoffed and paced about the pool room, but looked back over his shoulder just in time to catch Sebastian with a triumphantly cheeky grin on his face. Sam clicked his tongue and lightly thumped the base of his cue stick into the floorboards.
ā€œShow-offā€¦ā€ he mumbled.
Elliott lifted the rim of the empty vessel to his lips, then chuckled again as he noticed the absence of ale and gestured it in Gusā€™ direction.
ā€œGood sir, my glass is empty andā€¦. Iā€™m a writer!ā€
ā€œMaybe you should stop for tonightā€¦ā€ the farmer interjected. ā€œYou wonā€™t be sober enough to start your next chapter in the morning!ā€ Elliott rolled his eyes and leaned against the bar counter. He tried to give one of his best theatrically exasperated sighs, but when the exhale turned into a case of the hiccups, they knew he was down for the count. He smiled defiantly and tried his best to look dignified through the sudden spasms in his diaphragm and soused thousand yard stare.
ā€œI-am fiiineā€¦ neā€™re bettaā€™ā€¦ā€
ā€œā€¦..Aaaand, there he goesā€¦ā€ Leah giggled from the end of the bar counter. ā€œItā€™s like dropping a ton of bricks on a peach.ā€
ā€œI oughttaā€™ help the olā€™ scallywag home, I sā€™pose!ā€ Willy groaned as he stood from the bar stool. He smiled as he hoisted one of Elliottā€™s arms over his shoulders and stood him up from the bar stool. ā€œCā€™mon you menaceā€¦ Letā€™s get ya home before you make a fool of yourself in front of all the lassies!ā€ he chuckled. Sam took a moment to appreciate the situation at the bar counter. He shook his head and laughed, then took another shot at the 12 and missed horribly yet again.
ā€œEasy does it there!ā€ Emily cooed as she cleared away the empty tankard. ā€œTry not to drop him too hard!ā€ Elliott wobbled towards the door as Willy struggled to keep him upright, and just before they stepped out into the lukewarm summer evening, the farmer waved one last farewell and called out to the well marinated dandy-man as he staggered away.
ā€œNighty-night! Sleep tight, Rapunzel!ā€ they chirped. Elliot responded to the joke by blowing an overly exaggerated kiss over his shoulder and daintily waiving his fingertips at the company in the saloon, then he nearly tripped over himself as he turned back to the path home. A couple of snorts, giggles and guffaws rose up over the music and chatter in the saloon and quickly melted back into the white noise once the moment passed.
Seb looked Sam in the eyes with a determined glare and smirked.
ā€œEight in the corner pocketā€¦.ā€ Seb didnā€™t have a clear shot, but leaned over the table, reared back the stick and spiked it into the cue ball. It ricocheted from the bumper, side-swiped the eight, and put just enough force into the edge to cause it to spin sideways into the pocket heā€™d called. Sam laughed and scratched at the back of his head.
ā€œAwwww, manā€¦ā€ he groaned. ā€œYou got me again!ā€ Sam leaned against his cue stick and looked over the table before his eyes lit up in anticipation. ā€œHow about a best three out of five?ā€ Abigail giggled at Samā€™s request as she stretched and leaned back into the sofa.
ā€œGive it up, blondie! He cooks your goose at this game EVERY single timeā€¦. Youā€™re doomed.ā€ She teased. ā€œItā€™s getting late anywaysā€¦ā€
ā€¦
It had been almost a month since the odd shape had been spotted flying over town at this point. Seb and Abby had talked in depth about it, and though most of the other townsfolk had come to the conclusion that it had merely been some sort of exotic bird flying out toward the fern islands, Abby was positive she hadnā€™t been mistaken. In fact she was adamant that the form looked human. She hadnā€™t seen or heard any wings flapping and the ā€œsquawkingā€ sounded more so like the laugh of an old woman than the cries of a bird. The figure seemed to levitate or hover effortlessly and without the use of any physical or mechanical assistance. It was slumped over as if it was curled up or sitting and justā€¦. Floated away.
The long night spent coding and researching the relevant programing issues at the computer, had caused Sebastian to rise late. He was groggy, didnā€™t have much motivation to bother rolling out of bed, and it was almost noon at this point. He could hear the rain pattering against the roof of the house and the rumble of distant thunder. As lazy as he felt, a smoke sounded pretty good about now. The sound and sight of the ocean on rainy days also had a way of clearing his head and a little stroll would probably do him some good.
He didnā€™t pass anyone on the way out of the house. Robin was likely at her aerobics club, Maru, at work in the clinic, and who knew where Demetrius wasā€¦ Out shoving dirt samples into test tubes, or measuring the volume and PH of the current rainfall? As long as he wasnā€™t dissecting frogs. Out of all of Sebastianā€™s childhood memories, that was the one that stuck in his head and haunted him. Back then, Maru had only just been born, and while Robin was busy keeping her entertained, fixing her bottle or changing diapers, Seb was wandering the house trying to find something to occupy his time. Heā€™d wandered into his step-fatherā€™s study and there on the examination tray was a deceased frog pinned on itā€™s back, limbs splayed like Da Vinciā€™s ā€œVitruvian Manā€ with itā€™s belly sliced open. Sebastian had cried and pouted over that for several days and had given Demetrius the silent treatment for even days longer intermixed with spells of arm crossing, head turning and the occasional stuck out tongue and blown raspberry. He cringed at the thought even now.
The hinges creaked as he pushed the front door open and paused. The summer was starting to give way to autumn and the parched ground soaked up the rain and turned loose the pungent, almost overpowering scent of petrichor.
Sebastian flipped the hood of his pull-over around his head and tightened up the drawstrings. He took a moment to smell the aroma of wet grass and earth that drifted through the air and held the fragrance in his lungs as he closed the door behind him.
He began his slow, steady march toward the beach and lost count of his steps after heā€™d passed the old Community Center. Heā€™d barely noticed the changing of terrain under his feet as he moved almost subconsciously toward the ocean. The raw, muddy dirt paths of the mountain, the crunch of rough stones and shuffle of old, dead pine needles that carpeted the groundā€¦ Theyā€™d transitioned into the grass and cobblestone of the town plaza at some point, but they all seemed to blend together into ā€œjust stepsā€ after a while. His inner thoughts distracted him to the point where he barely paid attention to his surroundings until he felt his footfalls sinking and shifting underneath him, and he knew heā€™d hit sand. He heaved a deep sigh of the salt air and looked over the horizon as he paced toward the docks.
When the sky was this gray and muted, the color of the sea seemed to take on itā€™s own jewel-like quality and without the blue sky to draw attention away from it, the eyes of each breaking wave became a splendor to watch. They erupted into columns of aquamarine, sapphire and sodalite laced with the bright, almost pearlescent white of the sea foam before curling over, crashing into the tides and giving way to the next one.
Sebastian came to a stop at the furthest reaching section of the wood panels and straightened up his posture as he groped into his pockets for the pack of cigarettes heā€™d brought with him. He selected one from the box, tucked it between his teeth and plunged his fingers back into the pocket for his lighter. He curled his left hand in front of his face, to protect the fire from the wind, flicked open the lid and thumbed the igniter. The flint sparked into a flame as it spun and lit up the end of the cigarette to a smoldering red glow. He pulled in a breath and held it for a moment before letting it out and watching the smoke dance away in the wind. It still wasnā€™t quite as satisfying as that first breath of rain when heā€™d stepped out of the house. Another sigh escaped Sebā€™s lips as he stared back at the oncoming crests of seawater and his mind started to drift again.
He imagined the city lights blazing somewhere across the ocean like stars, and thought about starting over somewhere far away. Disappearing, and reappearing somewhere else like a shadow moving through fragments of darkness and light, somewhere where no one knew him. Just vanishing and leaving everything behind. His parents, his sister, his friendsā€¦ the thought excited him for a moment, before giving way to an intense feeling of regret and sadness. Maybe even a little shame. Having everyone was frustrating, but would having none of them be better or worse? Heā€™d never known anything else. The same friends heā€™d grown up with, the same smell of the changing seasons in the mountain air, the same four walls of his bedroom, the sound of his sisterā€™s laugh, or the taste of his motherā€™s cookingā€¦ even the way his stepfather overreacted to the littlest things was something he'd grown used to. He took another long breath.
The waves lapped and pounded at the underside of the dock so loudly he couldnā€™t hear the patter of oncoming footfalls against the wood and he was caught unaware when a sudden presence made itself known.
ā€œHey.ā€ The start was enough to make him tense up, and he almost tripped over his own feet. Seb whirled around and when he found himself face to face with the farmer, he relaxed again.
ā€œYou scared the absolute crap out of meā€¦..ā€ He said as he rolled his eyes. He flicked his thumb against the filter of the cigarette to knock away the ashes and looked over the docks. They were alone.
ā€œSorryā€¦.ā€ There was an awkward moment of silence between the two of them before Sebastian tried to force conversation.
ā€œWhat are you up to out here?ā€ He asked. He wasnā€™t really interested in the answer, but felt obligated to return the acknowledgement of his presence. The farmer held up the rod that was firmly clasped in their right hand and gestured to the ocean.
ā€œFishing!ā€ Seb raised an eyebrow and cocked his head at the response.
ā€œIn the rain?ā€ he asked. His tone was almost dismissive. The farmer nodded.
ā€œWilly said that thereā€™s a number of fish that only come out when itā€™s raining, so I wanted to see what bites.ā€ They began. ā€œSome fish just like it better this way I guess.ā€ There was another long pause. ā€œā€¦and you?ā€
ā€œHanging outā€¦ā€ Seb shrugged and adjusted the collar of his hoodie.
ā€œIn the rain?ā€ The irony of the retort wasnā€™t lost on either of them though only the farmer seemed to find it amusing.
ā€œSome people just like it better this way tooā€¦ā€ Seb declared as he shifted his posture and crossed his arms over his chest. ā€œI like to come out here where itā€™s quiet and have some alone time with my own thoughts.ā€ There was a brief moment of guilt when Sebastian realized that he hadnā€™t actually ever bothered to ask the farmerā€™s name, but his introverted nature snubbed it out pretty quickly.
ā€œWell, if youā€™re out here for some alone time, I wonā€™t keep bothering you. Iā€™ll go find a spot to fish and leave you to it.ā€ At least they could take a hint. The farmer turned to leave and Sebastian suddenly regretted the entire conversation. Maybe he came off as cold and bristly? Either way, they hadnā€™t meant any harm. Just engaging in basic pleasantries. He found himself compelled to say something else just so the conversation wouldnā€™t end on such a sour note, then the thought of the flying figure and the appearance of the strange egg in the farmerā€™s coop a while back suddenly popped into his head.
ā€œWaitā€¦.ā€ Sebastian flicked away the spent cigarette and stamped it out with the toe of his shoe before he continued. The farmer turned back in his direction. ā€œI was just curiousā€¦ do you remember what happened a couple of weeks ago? The night thatā€¦ thingā€¦ flew over Pelican Town?ā€ The farmerā€™s eyes narrowed and they nodded slowly. ā€œThat was the night that strange egg just showed up in your chicken coop, right?ā€ The farmer looked bewildered. Seb chuckled soundlessly when he realized that, for at least a moment, he was acting like the epitome of some small town country boy who was nosing into someone elseā€™s business. The farmer was likely confused because they hadnā€™t spoken to Sebastian about it directly. How could he know about that? They didnā€™t have to ask before he preemptively put the question to rest. ā€œI was in the saloon playing pool with Sam the night after it happened. I overheard you talking about it with Gus, Willy and uh- ā€¦Rapunzel.ā€ He explained. A tiny snort escaped the farmerā€™s nose as they stifled a laugh and they nodded again.
ā€œRightā€¦ I still donā€™t know where it came from.ā€ They rested the handle of the fishing pole on the dock like a staff or walking stick and looked up at the sky as if they were contemplating something. ā€œI donā€™t know if the egg had anything to do with the flying figure, or if it was just a coincidenceā€¦ they did both appear on the same night.ā€
ā€œEveryone in town says that the flying thing was probably just some weird bird heading toward the islandsā€¦ā€ Seb droned. He shoved his hands into his pockets to sooth the chill in his fingers. ā€œIf that IS where the egg came from, then maybe it was just a birdā€¦ā€ The farmer briskly shook their head before they answered.
ā€œNo, I donā€™t think so.ā€ They rested a hand on their hip, fidgeted with the line strung through the fishing rod and seemed to gaze off into the distance towards the island in question. ā€œThat wouldnā€™t make sense considering what hatched.ā€ Sebastianā€™s head snapped upright to meet their gaze. Now this was getting interesting.
ā€œIt actually hatched?!ā€ He piped as his eyes widened inquisitively. ā€œWhat was it?ā€
ā€œA chickenā€¦. And those canā€™t fly long distances.ā€ The farmer chortled as they watched Sebastianā€™s face droop back to some semblance of apathy. He looked mildly disappointed.
ā€œAwwā€¦. Well thatā€™s kind of anticlimactic.ā€ He groaned.
ā€œYeah, sorry itā€™s not more exciting than thatā€¦ā€ There was a sudden gust of wind and both of them had to brace against the pelting of raindrops that came with it. ā€œIt is a pretty peculiar looking chicken, if that makes you feel any better.ā€
ā€œReally?... How so?ā€ He gazed back at them expectantly and waited for them to go into detail.
ā€œThe feathers are jet black and the comb and wattles have a bit of an odd shape to them. The eyes are also bright red, like an animal with albinism and theyā€™re almost reflective in the dark tooā€¦ like a catā€™s eyes.ā€ They paused and rested their hand over the lower half of their face as if they were taking a moment to recall more of the specifics to memory. ā€œAnd thereā€™s just something about the way it clucks.ā€ They added. ā€œIt doesnā€™t really cluck like a normal hen, but it sounds more likeā€¦ an echo of a cluck, I suppose.ā€
ā€œWhat?....ā€ Sebastian laughed as his expression shifted again. The description of the noise sounded completely ridiculous. Not a cluck, but an echo of a cluck? They may as well have likened it to a phantom voice or the cry of a specter. Something that eluded the range of sounds that most humans would ever have the chance or perception to experience. The farmer lifted their eyes back to Sebastianā€™s as if theyā€™d suddenly remembered something else.
ā€œShe started laying eggs a couple of days ago. They look just like the one that appeared in the coop that nightā€¦ā€ They let the fishing pole drop from their hand to the wood planking of the dock and slipped their arm out of the left strap of their backpack. ā€œI actually have one with me if you want to see itā€¦.ā€ They slid the other strap off of their shoulder and swung the bag around their right side, letting it come to a rest in front of them as they knelt down. Seb took a few steps closer and stooped to get a better look as they dug through the contents.
They gingerly grasped what looked like a tiny bundle wrapped in a kerchief and began to slowly peel away the corners of the fabric, exposing what was probably the most bizarre looking egg heā€™d ever seen in his life. It was black and somewhat glossy, unlike the calcified matte shells of most chicken eggs, and the surface seemed to be covered in tiny indents or fissures that exposed flecks of a bright, almost luminescent red underneath. The farmer held the egg out to Sebastian as they stood up straight and nodded, silently offering to let him hold it for a closer look. He gently cupped the egg in his hands, tucked his arms in close to his body and cradled it in his palms like a cautious child trying to hold a hamster. It was heavier than heā€™d expected it to be, and surprisingly warm.
The color reminded him of magma or hot coals. Something like the intense heat glowing through crackling obsidian after a volcanic eruption or a dying fire. He leaned his head even closer to the egg as he examined the texture of the shell, and his nose wrinkled a bit when he caught the scent. It was sulphurous, and almost earthy smelling, but not overpoweringly so.
ā€œItā€™s not rotten, is it?ā€ he asked as he gently turned the egg over in his hands.
ā€œSee, thatā€™s the strange thing about it. It canā€™t beā€¦. That egg was just laid this morning.ā€ They explained. ā€œAll of the eggs that hen lays have thatā€¦ little whiff of something burning to them.ā€ The rain was starting to slow up a bit. The farmer thought for a moment and giggled at the notion of what they said next. ā€œIā€™m not inclined to say that theyā€™re edible eitherā€¦ at least, not to people, and I wouldnā€™t be keen on being the first one to test that.ā€ Sebastian winced at the thoughtā€¦and smell, and stifled a laugh.
ā€œMe neitherā€¦ā€ He smiled softly when the red speckled pattern caught his attention again. ā€œIt does look really cool though!ā€
He really did have a nice smile. It was kind of a shame that he didnā€™t let people see it more often. His eyes brightened, and his face looked softer and more approachable, yet also, inquisitive and curious. It was a look of fascination and wonder. Like a kid whoā€™d just discovered dinosaurs and outer space for the first time, or someone whoā€™d just felt their first taste of freedom and didnā€™t quite know what to do with it. An imaginative or inspired sort of expression.
ā€œSince you like it so much, why donā€™t you hang onto it?ā€ the farmer beamed.
ā€œCan I?ā€ Sebastianā€™s eyes lit up again and he gazed back at the farmer with a delighted look on his face.
ā€œSure! Hens lay eggs every day or so. Thereā€™ll be more before long!ā€ they chimed. Sebastian chuckled as he curled his fingers about the egg and sheltered it from the rain.
ā€œThank you!ā€ He gazed at it for a few moments more as the farmer hefted the rucksack back onto their shoulders and pulled the fishing rod from itā€™s resting place on the dock. ā€œHey, this might sound kind of stupidā€¦.ā€ He began as he gazed back and forth between the farmer and his new prizeā€¦ ā€œBut, do you think itā€™ll hatch if I put it under my pillow?ā€ he laughed awkwardly at his own question when he realized how foolish it must have sounded, but was pleasantly surprised when the farmerā€™s response was more optimistic than he had expected.
ā€œUmm, I donā€™t knowā€¦ Maybe! Itā€™s worth a try anyway, and stranger things have happened.ā€
ā€œOnly one way to find out I guess!ā€ Sebastian said smiling in anticipation.
ā€œGood luck! Youā€™ll have to let me know what happens!ā€ They scanned out over the tides as if looking for something before turning back to Sebastian. ā€œI should hurry and find a spot to fish before the rain stops again, but it was really nice talking to you!ā€
ā€œYeah, you too!ā€ Seb agreed. ā€œIā€™ll see you later!ā€ He distracted himself for a moment, making sure the egg was tucked away safe and warm in his hoodie pocket, when he suddenly realized something. ā€œHey, wait!...ā€ he quickly turned back to where the farmer had been standing just a minute before, but by the time heā€™d remembered what heā€™d needed to ask, theyā€™d already trotted too far out of earshot to be able to hear him. ā€œAw, manā€¦ I forgot to catch their name again.ā€ He lamented. ā€œIā€™ll have to remember to ask them next timeā€¦ Next time for sure.ā€

2024.05.18 00:17 Pokken_Champ815 My Sonic Heroes Review

So for a while or so I've been playing older Sonic games just to see if they still held up. So far a majority of the games I played were at the very least good with some of the best ones being Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic rush. But something that might be my biggest Sonic hot take ever is that Heroes is one of the worst games in the entire Sonic series(unpopular opinion I know but let me explain myself). And just a heads up this is gonna be a long one because I got a lot to say about this game.
Because this game has a lot of aspects that I donā€™t like, I'm going to first touch on some aspects I actually like about the game. Even though not every character was written the best I will say some stand out characters I enjoyed are Cream and Omega, especially Omega but I wanna touch on Cream first. Ever since reading the IDW comics I've always had a soft spot for Cream just from how innocent and adorable she was and that sentiment continued with how she was paired with Blaze in Sonic Rush. I was admittedly nervous about how she would be portrayed in Heroes for reasons I'll get into later but she was handled alright. Nothing too groundbreaking but she kept her cute nature and even had some small moments of sass which was nice. The real star of the show was E-123 Omega. He really only has one thing on his mind with destroying Eggman and doesnā€™t really go through any sort of character arc, but thatā€™s fine with me because the dudeā€™s funny as hell with how aggressive and angry he is. He doesnā€™t have much of a face or eyes that are able to emote but you can still tell exactly what heā€™s thinking. I canā€™t explain why but every piece of dialogue that comes out of hisā€¦mouth?....speakers?...is hysterical. From ā€œANNIHILATEā€ to ā€œUSELESS CONSUMER MODELSā€ even down to when he says ā€œGOODā€ every time you pop an item box or balloon every quote is comedy gold with how monotone his voice is. The chemistry each team has with each other is nice to watch since from their dialogue you can tell that these trios have known each other for a while, are good friends with one another, or in Team Darkā€™s case just work friends(but their banter is still entertaining with how Omega keeps telling them to stay focused). And the music is good but as a Sonic fan thatā€™s par for the course at this point. What Iā€™m Made Of is a stand out banger for me.
But unfortunately thatā€™s where all the positives end as we move into the negatives with one of the biggest being the physics of the game being poorly optimized. Throughout my playthrough I have run into so many bugs or victims of poor game design that Iā€™ve lost count. But over half of my deaths have been due to the fact that there are no invisible walls to act as safety nets for players incase they misclick or even do something as simple as do a homing attack or perform a 3 hit combo with a power character, the latter happening way too often because power characters are the most reliable way to deal with enemies. Enemies bumping you are also a common way to die but not because of running out or rings, but because of the lack of walls keeping you on the platforms. Speaking of the homing attack, with how the movement physics work with speed characters I never use them because they end up being too slippery to control with instances where it feels like I'm fighting for control just so I can move forward in a straight line or hit a boost pad on a loop. The Light Speed Dash works whenever it feels like it and thereā€™s no way to aim the homing attack so you pretty much have to press A twice and pray that rn-Jesus does you nice, otherwise youā€™re falling down a pit like youā€™re Scrooge McDuck diving into a vault of gold coins. And remember how I said enemies bumping you off cliffs was a common way to die? Well they can also just combo you for free because this game has no invincibility frames meaning you can get hit once and then instantly die if you or one of your teammates doesnā€™t pick up a ring right after being hit. This is especially apparent in horde fights like Robot Storm where you can get easily swarmed. And a staple mechanic from Sonic Adventure 2 that was butchered in this followup was the rail grinding. It was super fun to build up speed by balancing and crouching but now you just mash B with any real sense of speed being from a speed character. And heaven forbid you decided to grind rail with a flight character unless you like sliding at the speed of a snail, but you might wanna do that anyway to be save because if you switch rails the game doesnā€™t magnetize your character to it risking you to just shoot yourself off the map just for swapping rails or getting off of a rail.
Another awful aspect with the game is the team mechanic itself. Itā€™s an interesting idea on paper to be able to swap between 3 characters to perform different actions based on what the level throws at you. But the problem with that is not every formation is balanced. The flying formation is awful in every way. The totem formation itself looks weird and looks especially janky with how it looks when going off a set of springs or going through a dash panel loop. How it controls itself makes absolutely no sense either; you jump and jump again to fly which drains a meter, which makes sense since Tails worked in a similar way back in Sonic 2 and still works like that in every other 2D classic style game. But I didnā€™t learn until the last story that the gauge only drains if you move forwards and wonā€™t drain if you donā€™t move forward which not only makes no sense but doesnā€™t work like that in Sonic 2 at all. And whenever the meter runs out you might think that you would just glide down to the floor right? No. Instead the game halts all of your momentum and has you fall straight down like a boulder making flying based platforming impossible which was not the case in Sonic 2. And for some reason thereā€™s a limit for how high you can go even though thereā€™s already a limit you can fly for. Wanna know what game allows you to fly as long as you want until you run out of stamina? SONIC FUCKING 2 ON THE SEGA GENESIS/MEGA DRIVE. Sonic Heroes not only came out 10 years after Sonic 2 but was released on more powerful consoles so I'm baffled that they didnā€™t even try to make any of this shit work in any similar fashion. And this gets even worse for Sonic Heroes because you know how I just described how they would have improved the flying mechanics in Sonic Heroes? Well it WORKS EXACTLY HOW I JUST EXPLAINED IN SONIC ADVENTURE FOR THE THE DREAMCAST 1999. What the hell were they thinking with this!? This makes absolutely no fucking sense. And the Thunder Shoot attack? It doesnā€™t do much except paralyze enemies and hit targets meant to help you move forward in levels. Except it only does one of these things correctly since the game doesnā€™t auto target the targets meaning 90% of the time youā€™ll be constantly throwing your teammates into the ether while missing entirely as you try again and again to change your angle to hit the target just so you can move on with the average 10 minute level. And the switches youā€™re meant to pull are janky in their own right but the switches you have to fly for are the worst since no matter how close you get to that switch the game wonā€™t register what youā€™re trying to do which is annoying as balls. And as the finishing touch all flying character have no differences in gameplay despite slight animations and apparently they have this unique attack they can do if they donā€™t have party members to throw with Thunder Shoot by pressing B again...but the game doesnā€™t tell you that and even knew that youā€™ll never see it in practice because if you toss a teammate with Thunder Shoot theyā€™ll come back almost instantly.
And the biggest failure is that you can no longer spin dash in this game. Itā€™s no big deal, itā€™s not like they removed one of Sonicā€™s most essential moves in his arsenal that was present all the way from Sonic 2 and was even in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, useless crap like that. Instead you have to use the stupid Rocket Accel which canā€™t be activated instantly like the spin dash with instead having the player get a running start to have your teammate boost you forward that doesnā€™t go as far as the spin dash in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. Itā€™s an alright concept that would be fine to keep if the spin dash remained in the game and not replaced with some trash faker that doesnā€™t hold up to the original. Which leaves us with the power formation which is the best formation by far but not by much. Power is the easiest one to control since it allows you to properly control your character at a moderate speed, a novel concept I know. But combo attacks that involve the character moving forward in a short burst are risky to use since you could wind up pushing yourself off the map which happens way more often than youā€™d think and more often than it should. And because they have to share data with all the playable teams they away Knucklesā€™ ability to climb walls in favor of a tacky looking team glide for platforming just like they took away the Spin Dash.
Another team related mechanic the game introduces is something called the ā€œTeam Blastā€ which has a gauge fill up every time you deal damage to enemies or collect rings no matter how you collect said rings(remember this for later). When a team gauge is filled you can perform a Team Blast by pressing Z that acts as a screen wipe that clears almost every enemy on screen. I say almost because it doesnā€™t really remove every enemy on screen because some doof over at Sonic Team thought it would be a good idea to give an ultimate attack thatā€™s meant to wipe out all enemies on screen with a limited range, which is smaller than youā€™d think by the way. Each Team Blast has their own special effect that appears for around 10 seconds after the attack is used which iā€™ll be talking about when I talk about each team on their own but know that after Team Sonicā€™s Team Blast Sonic will be able to use the Light Speed Attack from Adventure 1 and 2ā€¦but thatā€™s useless when youā€™re able to still fight as Knuckles and it fucks up your Thunder Shoot when attacking bosses.
And the next fancy mechanic they try adding in is the new level system. And I hate this system so much. The idea of the level system is that your character starts off dealing an ok amount of damage but can get stronger the more you level up by collecting orbs that can drop from enemies. Speed characters get a stronger spin dash, flight characters get a stronger Thunder Shoot, and power characters get stronger combo enders. The problem is that in terms of combat no Sonic game has ever worked like this. For the most part every enemy in a Sonic game that came out before and after Heroes is able to be one shot by a simple jump, roll, spin dash, homing attack, mech shot, boost or punch with the only exceptions I can name off the top of my head being Sonic Rush, Sonic Unleashedā€™s night stages, and Sonic Frontiers. But those 3 examples are excusable since with Rush itā€™s only one enemy that has more than 1 HP that doesnā€™t spawn often and with the other 2 being based more on combat than speeding through levels as fast as possible. Your team will only be satisfying to play after everyone as at the maximum level of level 3 which can be difficult to do since whichever orbs enemies drop when defeated are not only random for when exactly theyā€™ll drop but itā€™s also completely random who the level up is meant for. Imagine needing to level up your power character to get through a large horde of enemies but instead all the levels go to the other 2 teammates that are virtually useless in a fight. ā€œAh dammit, I needed a power orb to get to level 2ā€¦ah well might as well give my other teammates their 50th orb of the fight.ā€ The only ways to get guaranteed levels for a certain character is with certain item boxes and balloons scattered throughout the level and with checkpoints but the latter only works for the character leading the formation when touching the checkpoint, not to mention theyā€™re single use only. And say you grinded all those levels so you can blitz through this level, guess what, if you die all of your levels get reset and it doesnā€™t matter if you only lose a life or game over. And iā€™ve made it very clear how easy it is to unintentionally kill yourself in this game.
Something else that isnā€™t properly explained is the hidden difficulty system. The problem is that each team campaign has a hidden difficulty system but the game doesnā€™t tell you that at all unless you want to willingly listen to Omochao(note that I played the tutorial and afterwards I actively avoided his tips on the main menu). The difficulty from easy to hard is Teams Rose, Sonic, Dark, and Chaotix being a gimmick team but the game orders them from Sonic, Dark, Rose, Chaotix which is bad game design because not only are people gonna wanna play as the main character Sonic the Hedgehog, but with how the stories are laid out players would instinctively play from left to right causing them to play the game on normal, hard, easy, and then gimmick which doesnā€™t make too much sense. I knew the difficulty levels before going in but I played in order of Sonic, Rose, Dark, Chaotix because I like Sonic as a character. But what I wasnā€™t prepared for is that this game is kinda hard even on the normal difficulty because the game is full of jank that can just kill you for playing the game as intended.
But now for Team Rose and Team Dark. Team Rose is so piss easy that itā€™s insulting for players who are well affirmed with the series. For one they force you to play the tutorial even after youā€™ve completed a story previously. Which btw this is the most bullshit tutorial in the history of gaming. Most games have pop ups with button commands and visuals to help the player out or they let the player figure things out themselves. Sonic Heroes does neither of these but instead have this little annoying ass robotic fuck hold your hand throughout the entire thing. What makes this worse is that every time he pops up to tell you what to do your character is stuck in place as you gotta wait for him to shut up so you can play the game only for you to be stopped by his rambling again and again and again until itā€™s finally over. And most of the skills players can learn on their own since itā€™s not that hard to just press a random button and get immediate feedback of ā€œoh this button does this? cool beans''. Their moveset is also broken with Amyā€™s tornado attack being a moving projectile meaning you donā€™t have to willingly get in contact with the enemy in order to use it, Big having a combo that doesnā€™t have him move so he canā€™t fall off the map along with a broken belly flop thatā€™s good for not only combat but weirdly enough platforming, and Creamā€¦sheā€™s just the flier. Their Team Blast is just a win button for no good reason. Not only does it give all of your teammates a free level, not only does it give your team a shield, but it makes your entire team INVINCIBLE. Ok game I get it, stop treating me like a baby. And the finishing touch is that all the levels are cut in half. Awesome. Setting up unrealistic expectations for newcomers and disrespecting older players in one foul swoop.
And then thereā€™s Team Darkā€¦oh Team Darkā€¦when they said this was the ā€œhardā€ mode they were lying. Because it shouldā€™ve been called ā€œkaizoā€ mode. Enemies are everywhere including places they shouldnā€™t be, the amount of rings available is greatly reduced, And the bosses become borderline impossible to beat at times(except for the rival fights but weā€™ll get to that). And not only are there more enemies but the stronger variants of said enemies spawn more frequently. And youā€™d think their Team Blast would make things better, well yes and no but hereā€™s why. Their Team Blast freezes time completely and I mean completely. Rings donā€™t spin, projectiles donā€™t move, even the timer doesnā€™t tick down. But the most annoying part is if youā€™re using your Team Blast to try and move forward the puzzles are stuck in time too until the gauge runs out so you gotta sit and wait to move on. And even after you move on the game will probably toss 3 giant armored robots at you at once that fight like mini-bosses(if you know you know) immediately after your Team Blast just ran out.
But before I talk about the final team with Team Chaotix I wanna talk about the level design! Yippee! Except not really because itā€™s all terrible. The locations and themes are unique in their own right but each level suffers from their own issues coupled with all the bugs that can kill you outright without the player having any time to think about what just happened. Ignoring the main bugs, Seaside Hill and Ocean Palace are fine first levels in all honesty. Power Plantā€™s elevator section is long and tedious and itā€™s worse if you have a character than use the Light Speed Dash along with a super stressful rising lava section that you gotta hurry up to climb or else youā€™re dead. But oooh nooo itā€™s not that easy because the lava moves faster along with the player which means if youā€™re too slow, you die and if youā€™re too fastā€¦you die. Casino Park and Bingo Highway have pinball mechanics that will leave you stuck in one of the tables forever unless youā€™re a pinball god or just lucky. And we just love games marketed at children that encourage gambling addictions, especially if said gambling minigames are rng. Rail Canyon and Bullet Station rely entirely on rails which donā€™t work properly as I said before and Bullet Station in particular has a cannon thatā€™s supposed to shoot you onto another rail track but in actuality it fires you straight into the death zone if youā€™re unaware about this and hold forwardā€¦and because itā€™s a Sonic the Hedgehog game youā€™re gonna do that. ā€œGotta go fastā€ and all that. Frog Forest and Lost Jungle have flying flowers that are so jittery theyā€™re impossible to control, swinging vines with an awkward timing window, and it ends on a chase sequence against a giant crocodile that relies on the janky vines that last way too long. Hang Castle and Mystic Mansion are puzzle-filled mazes with ghost enemies that show up at the worst of times to jumpscare youā€¦which is all the time, and everything else(we all know these levels sucks moving on). Egg Fleet and Final Fortress have tons of bullshit cannons that can home in on you, can snipe you out of the air which can hit you out of a platforming segment and send you falling to your death, crumbling floors, everythingā€™s in the sky so thereā€™s almost no floor to stand on, and rails. The worst part about it all is that all 4 campaignā€™s use the same exact 14 levels. You heard me right. ALL 4 CAMPAIGNS USE THE EXACT SAME LEVELS. Sonic Adventure 2 had 2 campaigns with levels that heavily differed from each other one way or another. Each campaign has either a speed level, a treasure level, or a mech level and even then itā€™s not equal to how many levels each type of level gets and each level has a different setting and music track. Rush is the one case I can think of where the campaigns had minor differences. Only thing is that those differences are huge. The levels are the same but theyā€™re in a different order for Sonic and Blaze, Blaze plays completely differently from Sonic, Blaze gets her own music tracks, and Sonic has to use special stages to get the Chaos Emeralds while Blaze doesnā€™t need any to get the Sol Emeralds. And at the end of every other stage you gotta face off against-
Bosses! They all suck for different reasons. The mech fights boil down to mashing homing attacks like itā€™s a Mario Party minigame, the rival team fights are a joke, and the horde fightsā€¦oh my god the horde fights. Iā€™m just gonna rip the band-aid off here. ROBOT. FUCKING. STORM. This is not only the worst ā€œlevelā€ in Sonic Heroes but the worst boss fight out of any Sonic game I have ever played. Team Sonicā€™s is hard enough as is, Team Roseā€™s is a pushover(as is every boss in their campaign really), Team Chaotixā€¦weā€™ll get to them later. But Team Darkā€™s has to be the boss fight that throws the bullshit at you. Donā€™t believe me well then letā€™s see here, we got; a long robot gauntlet that feels like it takes years to get over with, more enemies that spawn with a lot of them being the stronger variants of the enemies weā€™ve already be accustomed to, multiple giant hammer wielding robots paired with either robots that heal them or robots that sap all your rings which because itā€™s a Sonic game itā€™s basically life steal, and because this game was programmed with monkeys holding hammers the enemies will constantly knock your ass off the map and there is NOTHING you can do about it except pray. Pray to rn-Jesus that you can make it out alive with what little sanity is left in your body. And after all that Eggman has the balls to say what I'd call the worst line in any Sonic game, ā€œDonā€™t get too excited boys! Those were the easy ones!ā€. Itā€™s genuinely unbelievable that such a level exists. This was marketed towards kids. How is fucking little Casey who just got Sonic Heroes as their first video game gonna beat this shit? Heā€™s not. Because the developers didnā€™t think about that just like they didnā€™t think about anything in this game except making a ā€œfunā€ gimmick. But thatā€™s not all. Because thereā€™s one more boss...
Egg Emperorā€¦and the bullshit continues. I definitely know what true evil is when facing this boss all right. The fight consists of running across a few platforms before making your way over to a bigger arena. The boss only has 3 attacks but 2 of them are what make this boss a slog to get through. He can fire energy waves by swinging his lance like heā€™s Cloud Strife and a charge attack that has no weaknesses that the game says activates whenever youā€™re too far from him. Because this is a Sonic game I figured that meant he can only charge if youā€™re too slow, but if you manage to run ahead of him heā€™ll charge anyway. But if you get too close to him you could risk either getting hit by a lance beam or by his massive hurtbox. And you might be thinking ā€œwhy donā€™t you homing attack the body at that point?ā€ and thatā€™s because he has a shield that blocks all attacks and itā€™s only worth attacking his body after the second part of the fight where you go to that arena section. In the arena section you have to destroy some cannons and defeat some enemies before getting to the big man himself. You can make him drop his shield by using Thunder Shoot and follow up with your Power character but you probably wouldnā€™t do as much damage as you were hoping for since in order to do any real damage youā€™ll have to level your Power character up to level 3 which could take forever in this fight. After a certain amount of time the boss will flee causing you to chase after him again and repeat the boss cycle. But donā€™t go too fast because then youā€™ll wind up smacking right into his body or heā€™ll swat you out the air like a fly with a lance beam attack. And you canā€™t go too slow or else heā€™ll just charge at you which if he does it at the wrong time he can intercept your approach and boop you off the map meaning youā€™ll be dead. And if you thought that was enough, because the developers donā€™t know how to properly make things different between campaigns you have to fight this motherfucker 4 SEPARATE TIMES. And it doesnā€™t matter what campaign you go through because youā€™ll always have a tough time regardless of difficulty. I know itā€™s the final boss and that itā€™s meant to be a challenge but holy shit tone it down, thereā€™s kids playing this shit.
And the last campaign involves Team Chaotix and theyā€™re by far my favorite team to play asā€¦and they still have problems. Instead of going through levels the same way you did 3 separate times already it instead focuses on missions. And I have mixed feelings about this. Itā€™s great because it finally keeps things fresh and gives the player another way to experience the game that isnā€™t platforming focused. The problem is the fact that itā€™s still the same levels, levels that were meant for an action platformer instead of things finding an x amount ofā€¦I donā€™t know seashells. While the treasure hunting stages were my least favorite aspect of Sonic Adventure 2 they at least did a better job with the concept than some of the collecting missions in Heroes since the maps are built specifically for this kind of gameplay and there was at least a tracker telling you if you were going in the right direction. The Chaotix has you searching through levels youā€™re meant to speed through while not giving you any sort of tracker to tell you if youā€™re in the right direction. The Casino Park one in particular was the worst one because of the instructions: ā€œWin 200 Rings!ā€. Anyone who sees this probably assumes they mean to use the slot machines since weā€™re a casino level with slot machines built into the pinball tables. But the thing is you can easily just collect 200 rings by playing the stage. But the game doesnā€™t say collect 200 rings, it says win 200 rings which is the dumbest piece of misinformation in this game and thatā€™s saying something since this game loves to withhold information from the player for no reason. Like did you know you can fire your Thunder Shoot at nothing to charge your team gauge? Or that even though the game says to use a Speed characterā€™s tornado to deal with shield enemies Power characters can punch right through them no problem? You probably didnā€™t because the game doesnā€™t tell you this. Anyway the stealth missions are the best ones because Espioā€™s invisibility is broken. And their Team Blast causes any enemy destroyed to turn into rings and for the duration of the meter any enemy destroyed turns into rings. This is the most broken move in the game. Why? Well remember when I said that the Team Gauge charges from attacking enemies and collecting rings? Well the game counts any rings collected towards the meter. Meaning if you destroy enough enemies at once with this attack you can immediately get your gauge back to repeatedly use again and again. Itā€™s such an easy exploit to pull off that I'm not even surprised that this was left unchecked in all honesty. It even makes the dreaded Robot Storm look like a joke.
So thatā€™s it. You beat all the 4 campaigns and youā€™d think that itā€™s time for the usual last story, right?...right? Well unfortunately special stages make a return and with that the 7 Chaos Emeralds. And this is by far the worst one. In the past special stages were unlocked by method of holding at least 50 rings until the end of the stage and jumping into a warp ring in Sonic 1 or holding at least 50 rings and jumping into a star post in Sonic 2 or by jumping into a giant warp ring hidden in the level in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Sonic Heroes decided they wanna be a bit quirky in a horrible way. In order to access the special stages in this game you have to collect a key hidden in the stage and bring that key with you until the end of the level or mission in order to unlock the special stages and collect the Emeraldsā€¦thereā€™s so much wrong with thisā€¦Not only is it already easy for the game to send your ass to the shadow realm for existing but if you get hit and lose your key it doesnā€™t just fall out like rings do, it disappears completely meaning youā€™ll have to reload at a checkpoint or worse, restart the entire level every single time you get hit. And after you get through that bullshit we get to the special stage itselfā€¦if youā€™ve played this game you already know whatā€™s up. The special stage acts similarly to the half pipe in Sonic 2 but except itā€™s a full enclosed pipe you run around in. The goal is to collect orbs to fill your boost meter and speed ahead to catch the emerald. It sounds very simple but remember, this game was coded by monkeys with hammers so the physics donā€™t function. Your character will constantly jitter around while moving making positioning yourself impossible when trying to collect the orbs. You have to pick between a Power or Speed character because Flight characters are too slow to do anything but even then youā€™re picking your poison. Do you wanna control your character better at the cost of speed or do you wanna go fast in order to get the emerald quickly at the cost of controlling your character? ā€˜Cause thatā€™s exactly what it feels like. And I'm still not done because each Emerald is locked into every other stage. Sonic 1, 2, and 3 & Knuckles allows you to get the Emeralds as easy as the first 2 or 3 zones if you know what youā€™re doing. If you miss an emerald in one of the few stages they appear in youā€™ll have to repeat the level and do everything I just explained ALL OVER AGAIN. WHAT KIND OF COLLECTOR HATING SADISTIC BASTARD THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA WHEN THE EMERALDS ARE REQUIRED TO BEAT ALL OF THE STORY!? Before going in I knew how bad the special stages were while being blissfully unaware how bad the unlock requirements were so I used save states(yes I used an emulator) to collect the emeralds in a timely fashion. Not only did this end up taking longer than expected even with save states but I was forced to keep using them for every time I got hit, sent off the stage, or missed the Emerald causing my save file to corrupt and erase all my data. Which caused the auto save to fail and use exclusively save states to progress. And let me tell you, nothingā€™s scarier than booting up the game and discovering all of your save data has been completely erased even after you completed 2 campaigns previously.
Before I get into the last couple topics of discussion I'll touch on some minor things that donā€™t warrant their own paragraph individually. The voice acting is hit or miss with stand outs like Omega and Sonic and then thereā€™s instances of some of the worst voice acting in the series with Tails where they deadass brought an 8 year old to voice the character. ā€œLook at all those Eggmanā€™s robots!ā€. But it gets weirder since Cream was voiced by an actual voice actress and Charmy was voiced by a teenager. Doesnā€™t help that the game has the characters not stop talking for every single damn action in the game. Itā€™s the same cheesy lines for the entire playthrough. The game looks ugly with the admittedly improved models having textures that look like theyā€™re plastic toys ready to be sold in some Walmart or Target. The pre rendered cutscenes might be revolutionary at the time but are horribly dated by todayā€™s standards and the in game cutscenes that start at the beginning of boss fights and levels look extremely jittery and stiff with charactersā€™ arms flailing to move into position, Omegaā€™s eyes constantly bugging out, and the camera repeatedly having a stroke. Some assets feel like they are copy/pasted and slapped onto characters that donā€™t make sense. Omega and Big share the same aura color along with Espio and Sonic sharing the same aura color, purple and blue respectively. Omegaā€™s triple glide animation looks exactly like Knucklesā€™ even though he couldā€™ve been animated to use his thrusters. Rouge has a weird outfit change that is never used again. Some might think that it could be for censorship reasons but her chest is still exposed through a cleavage slit in the outfit which makes me wonder why they even bothered to change it. Plus her pink eyeshadow is less aesthetically pleasing than her iconic bright blue. Itā€™s unclear if all the teams are doing everything at the same exact time or not making things really confusing. The way the characters are written are all over the place with a mixed bag across the board. Team Darkā€™s great as characters but then you have Tails whoā€™s portrayed to act like some scaredy baby and Amy whoā€™s been turned into a hyper thirsty yandere thatā€™s willing to beat Sonic into marrying her. But all of that is nothing compared to how dirty they did Shadow.
Every team has their own mini story that drives their plot forwards; Team Sonic has to find and defeat Eggman, Team Rose is looking for their lost friends, Team Chaotix is tryna get the bread, and Omega, specifically Omega, is out to look for Eggman for revenge for locking him in a vault. Shadow thoughā€¦ok first off, why is he here? He literally sacrificed himself to save the planet Earth from the space colony Ark with characters honoring said sacrifice and mourning his death, Sonic includedā€¦But then they decided to bring him back along with amnesia and a clone side story that makes him question who he is. The clone story is the dumbest shit in this entire damn game. As if it wasnā€™t enough to make him forget all the events of Sonic Adventure 2, which can kinda make sense if he was sent into a coma after crashing on Earth. But now he has to go through some midlife crisis level shit to try and figure out his past and if heā€™s even real, which spoiler alert: this game doesnā€™t resolve either plot point. These points were further developed and resolved by the next game; Shadow the Hedgehog which wasnā€™t the best game by all means but it gave more of a fuck to have a concrete story than Heroes ever did. And whatā€™s worse is if the clones were gonna be brought up again in Shadow the Hedgehog and then be resolved in that same game then what the fuck was the point of doing any of this shit in Heroes!? All that did was leave Shadowā€™s story on a cliffhanger that accomplished nothing but made fans confused and left them with unanswered questions for 2 years until Shadow the Hedgehog came out.
But finally, after collecting all 7 Chaos Emeralds and beating all 4 Team campaigns youā€™re rewarded with the Last Story which reveals that Metal Sonic was the real mastermind behind everything that happened in the game so he can copy everyoneā€™s data and assume a powerful new formā€¦that takes way too long to transform intoā€¦with Metal Overlordā€¦just to beat Sonic. Not even world domination, just to beat Sonic. While his dedication is admirable itā€™s a really shallow goal. Plus the buildup towards him being the main big bad isnā€™t handled as well as it couldā€™ve been. All we get are a background element that people would miss if theyā€™re too focused on just beating the level, an extra animation at the end of a boss cutscene that only appears for Team Sonic and Shadowā€™s story, and a few lines of dialogue from Team Chaotixā€™s ā€œclientā€ that makes it clear that itā€™s Eggman. But it wouldā€™ve been better to actually know how all of this happened in the first place. Metal Sonic shows up as Neo Metal Sonic as the first time we see him in this game with no explanation as to how he got this form or how he found out he can copy othersā€™ abilities. Not even a cutscene or backstory from Eggman in the final story, instead he just complains about how they canā€™t defeat him without the Chaos Emeralds. Without prior knowledge I wouldnā€™t blame anyone for thinking that Metal Sonic just got a redesign since he hadn't made an appearance in the Adventure era at that time. How cool would it have been to have been given cutscenes showing us Metal Sonic twisting and contorting his body to not only show how he managed to do this in the first place but how far heā€™s willing to go to beat Sonic without spoiling the final form to leave the audience in suspense before the final act? And him not revealing that he copied Team Rose and Team Chaotix data kinda comes off as him not recognizing their strengths and calling them too weak to copy from, even if he didnā€™t say so himself. The segment where the teams do their best to weaken Metal Madness for Team Sonic is fine enough except the coding monkeys did it again and made it so that Flying characters canā€™t do any damage. But then thereā€™s the final battle with Super Team Sonicā€¦Team Super Sonicā€¦uhā€¦a Chaos Emerald powered Team Sonic. Admittedly the fight is really cool with Metal Overlord chucking entire battleships at the player and talking about how he believes heā€™s the real Sonic as What Iā€™m Made Of blasts in the background. But thereā€™s 2 major things that bring this fight down for me. Sonic Adventure 2 did a similar sequence of the cast of characters help Sonic and Shadow go super and defeat the big bad. Only difference being the buildup was more elaborate and the stakes were higher as if they failed the entire planet was at stake along with the presentation of the final fight being better in every way. One fight takes place in outer space while the other takes place in the sky a vague height above the ground. And most insulting of all they robbed us of bringing back Super Knuckles and Super Tails. This mightā€™ve been because of the retcon of super forms only being possible with male hedgehogs but that was a massive missed opportunity. And after the fight is done Sonic drops one of the corniest one liners in the franchise, the 5th set of unskippable credits scrolls on screen, and the game tells you to do everything again but get to A ranks this time as one final fuck you.
In conclusion the game had a lot ofā€¦interesting ideas to say the least in terms of mixing up the Sonic formula. Unfortunately they used too much gas when trying to cook and sent the entire dish ablaze. I think if they let this game simmer a bit more and took at least a year to iron out all the bugs and mishaps since this game was developed in 20 months. As a comparison Sonic Adventure 2 took 18 months to develop and was still better. And while I've made comparisons to past Sonic games I wanna make it clear that I am aware of the flaws those other games have. After all, nothing is perfect. But Sonic Team at least couldā€™ve made sure that their game was worth it in spite of these flaws by tweaking some game mechanics to make them more fun. And feel free to say why youā€™d think this game is peak Sonic. Alright thatā€™s all, thanks for reading this far and have a fantastic day.

2024.05.17 10:30 adulting4kids Figures of Speech AI Response

For the sheer fun of it, I went to Chat GPT with a creative writing assignment. For Figures of Speech prompts, I gave a free parameters, including the word length of 500-1000 words and the prompts for a few of the Fifty mentioned in the series.
I gave the AI creative license and let's just say, they're a long way off from replacing the better writers and I think it just makes it easier to do those lower level tasks and let's leave the creators a slightly higher level of skill to create actual tangible and engaging writing.
But here you go... hilarious how stuck it gets on certain terms and definitions.
These are in no particular order... separated by emojis that are totally unrelated to the storyline.
šŸ«±šŸ«±šŸ«±šŸ«±šŸ«±šŸ«±šŸ«±šŸ«±šŸ«²šŸ«²šŸ«²šŸ«²šŸ«²šŸ«²šŸ«²šŸ«² Response to Prompt 4: Understatement
In the quaint town of Brooksville, where the extraordinary was often met with an indifferent shrug, something truly remarkable occurred. The residents, sipping coffee at the local diner or strolling along the cobblestone streets, would describe it as just another peculiar day. Little did they know that beneath the surface of their nonchalant existence, a cosmic event unfolded.
The morning sun cast its usual warm glow on Brooksville, with birds chirping in the background, creating an illusion of normalcy. However, the anomaly had already begun. Mrs. Higgins, the elderly librarian, dismissed it as a minor inconvenience, merely a glitch in the library's ancient computer system. Yet, every book cataloged within those ancient shelves had transformed into a portal, connecting readers to parallel universes with every turn of a page.
As I, a humble journalist for the local paper, stumbled upon this revelation, I couldn't help but marvel at the town's responseā€”or lack thereof. "The library's having a bit of a moment," was the most anyone would acknowledge. It seemed the whole town collectively decided that this was, at most, a quirky hiccup.
For a thousand words, I delved into the understated reactions of the townsfolk, each encounter with a parallel universe bringing its own blend of confusion and nonchalance. As the portals expanded, revealing fantastical landscapes and alternate versions of Brooksville, the citizens maintained an impressive level of calm, as if interdimensional travel was a routine part of their daily lives.
The plot thickened when I discovered that the portals were a result of a mysterious artifact hidden within the library's archives. The mayor, sipping his coffee, remarked, "Well, that explains the strange noises in the basement." It became evident that the understatement of the situation was a defense mechanism, shielding the town from the cosmic chaos unfolding. šŸŽšŸŽšŸŽšŸŽšŸŽšŸŽšŸŽšŸŽšŸŽšŸŽšŸŽšŸŽšŸŽšŸŽ Response to Prompt 12: Juxtaposition
In the bustling metropolis of Neon City, skyscrapers touched the heavens, their dazzling lights reflecting off the sleek surfaces of futuristic cars. Yet, nestled within this urban jungle, an ancient relic stood defiantlyā€”the Old Grove Park.
As I strolled through the city's concrete arteries, the juxtaposition between the modernity of Neon City and the timeless serenity of the park became increasingly apparent. The cacophony of traffic was replaced by the rustling of leaves and the distant laughter of children playing.
The central conflict emerged when the city council, embodying the epitome of order, proposed transforming the park into a technologically advanced hub. The juxtaposition intensified as architects discussed plans for holographic playgrounds and virtual reality gardens within the confines of the Old Grove Park.
Through a thousand words, I explored the clash of ideals, the struggle between progress and preservation. The ancient trees became silent witnesses to heated debates at town hall meetings, where environmentalists and tech enthusiasts engaged in a battle of words. The juxtaposition of the towering skyscrapers against the gnarled branches of the park's oldest tree mirrored the tension in Neon City's collective conscience. šŸ˜«šŸ˜«šŸ˜«šŸ˜«šŸ˜«šŸ˜«šŸ˜«šŸ˜«šŸ˜«šŸ˜«šŸ˜«šŸ˜«šŸ˜«šŸ˜« Response to Prompt 31: Epanalepsis
"What is the meaning of life?" The question echoed in my mind, a relentless epanalepsis that demanded exploration. As I embarked on this freewriting journey, the repetition of the existential inquiry became the rhythm of my introspection.
For a thousand words, I delved into the varied perspectives of individuals wrestling with the ultimate question. From philosophers contemplating the intricacies of existence to everyday people seeking purpose in mundane routines, the epanalepsis served as a constant reminder of the universal quest for meaning.
The narrative weaved through different characters and their unique experiences, creating a tapestry of reflections that echoed the complexities of human existence. The repetitive structure became a literary heartbeat, pulsating with the shared yearning for understanding amid the chaotic symphony of life. šŸŖ”šŸŖ”šŸŖ”šŸŖ”šŸŖ”šŸŖ”šŸŖ”šŸŖ”šŸŖ”šŸŖ”šŸŖ”šŸŖ”šŸŖ” Response to Prompt 27: Symbolism
In the quaint town of Willowbrook, the arrival of a single dove carried profound significance. Its graceful descent into the town square was a symbol, an omen that whispered of impending change. As a budding novelist with a penchant for symbolism, I couldn't resist exploring the layers of meaning embedded in this seemingly mundane event.
For a thousand words, I dissected the impact of the dove on the lives of Willowbrook's residents. The mayor saw it as a sign of prosperity, the local florist interpreted it as a call for unity, and the elderly storyteller regarded it as a harbinger of forgotten tales. The dove's symbolism rippled through the town, influencing decisions and shaping destinies.
As the story unfolded, I traced the journey of the dove's symbolism, following its subtle influence on characters and events. The once quaint town underwent a transformative metamorphosis, and the symbolism of the dove became a thread that wove through the narrative, connecting disparate lives in unexpected ways. šŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ’œ Response to Prompt 33: Catachresis
In the dimly lit alleyways of Serpent's Hollow, darkness wrapped its cold arms around meā€”an eerie catachresis that mirrored the ominous atmosphere. The assignment was to explore the underbelly of the city, and as a novice reporter, I found myself navigating the labyrinth of deceit and shadows.
For a thousand words, I delved into the catachresis-infused descriptions of the characters populating Serpent's Hollow. The crime lord, known as the Velvet Serpent, ruled the district with a velvet-gloved fist. His lair, a dilapidated mansion, exuded an air of faded grandeur that served as a catachresis for the empire he once commanded.
As I chronicled the criminal underworld, the catachresis became a literary tool to convey the complexity and decay inherent in Serpent's Hollow. The labyrinthine plots, the twisted allegiances, and the morally ambiguous characters all found expression through catachresis, painting a vivid picture of a city where metaphor and reality intertwined. šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”§šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”§šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”§šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”§šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”§šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”§šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”§šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”§šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”§šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”§šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”§šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”§šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”§ Response to Prompt 43: Epizeuxis
"Never, never, never give up." The words echoed in my mind, a relentless epizeuxis that fueled the protagonist's journey against insurmountable odds. In the dystopian world I crafted, where hope was a rare commodity, the power of repetition became a beacon of resilience.
For a thousand words, I immersed myself in the protagonist's struggle, exploring the emotional depth of the epizeuxis as a mantra against despair. Each iteration of the phrase became a battle cry, a whispered promise that carried the weight of a shattered world on its shoulders.
As the narrative unfolded, the epizeuxis became a driving force, propelling the protagonist through a landscape of desolation and uncertainty. The repetition served as a reminder that, in the face of adversity, the strength to persist often lies in the relentless echo of one's own determination.
Response to Prompt 50: Acrostic
As the final rays of the setting sun painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, I found myself at the edge of the cliff overlooking the vast expanse of the ocean. The salty breeze carried whispers of a story, and with every breath, I embraced the challenge of crafting an acrostic that encapsulated the essence of my journey.
For a thousand words, I embarked on a reflective exploration, utilizing the initial letters of key words to weave a tapestry of emotions, experiences, and revelations. Each line unfolded with intention, revealing a hidden šŸ‘¾šŸ‘¾šŸ‘¾šŸ‘¾šŸ‘¾šŸ‘¾šŸ‘¾šŸ‘¾šŸ‘¾šŸ‘¾šŸ‘¾šŸ‘¾šŸ‘¾šŸ‘¾ Response to Prompt 3: Hyperbole
In the quaint village of Mistwood, where routines unfolded with the predictability of the sunrise, the arrival of a peculiar fortune teller sparked exaggerated whispers. "This is it, the end of our mundane lives!" proclaimed Mrs. Thompson, the town's eternal pessimist, as she clutched her cat, Captain Whiskers, with an air of impending catastrophe.
The hyperbole hung in the air, a thick fog of anticipation enveloping the village. As I delved into the story, the hyperbolic reactions of Mistwood's residents heightened the absurdity of the situation. What began as a mere visit from a mystical figure transformed into a fantastical escapade, with the fortune teller's prophecies shaping the destiny of the villagers in ludicrous ways.
Through the hyperbolic lens, I explored the comedic consequences of taking ordinary events to extraordinary extremes. The once mundane village square became a stage for outlandish dramas, with exaggerated gasps and dramatic swoons punctuating every revelation. In this hyperbolic haven, Mistwood's residents discovered the joy in embracing the absurdity of life. šŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸ Response to Prompt 6: Assonance
Amidst the rolling hills of Harmony Valley, where the soft hum of nature's symphony echoed through the meadows, a mysterious traveler arrived, bringing with them a melody that resonated with the delicate assonance of a forgotten tune. The townsfolk, captivated by the harmonious vibrations, felt an inexplicable connection to the stranger.
As I explored the narrative, the assonance became a musical thread weaving through the story, emphasizing the emotional cadence of the characters' experiences. The traveler's words, laced with vowel-rich verses, carried the echoes of a distant melody, leaving an indelible impression on the hearts of those who listened.
Through the lens of assonance, I delved into the subtle interplay of sounds that defined the atmosphere of Harmony Valley. The lyrical quality of the narrative mirrored the town's collective journey, where the resonance of shared moments and emotions harmonized with the traveler's enigmatic presence.
Response to Prompt 7: Onomatopoeia
In the bustling city of Metropolis, where the rhythm of urban life played out in a cacophony of sounds, a peculiar street performer emerged. Armed with an array of unconventional instruments, he orchestrated a symphony of onomatopoeic brilliance that echoed through the crowded streets.
The narrative unfolded with the vibrant expressions of onomatopoeia, capturing the essence of the city's sonic landscape. The performer's drumming evoked the rhythmic tap-tap of raindrops, while his wind instruments mimicked the whoosh of passing cars. The city, typically drowned in noise, became a canvas for this auditory artist.
As I delved into the story, the onomatopoeic symphony became a language of its own. The characters communicated through the vibrant echoes of everyday sounds, fostering a unique connection between the performer and the people of Metropolis. The narrative danced to the beat of onomatopoeic creativity, transforming the mundane into a dynamic celebration of city life. šŸ¦»šŸ¦»šŸ¦»šŸ¦»šŸ¦»šŸ¦»šŸ¦»šŸ¦»šŸ¦»šŸ¦»šŸ¦»šŸ¦»šŸ¦»šŸ¦»šŸ¦» Response to Prompt 12: Juxtaposition
In the technologically advanced city of Silicon Haven, where sleek skyscrapers touched the sky and holographic billboards painted the air with luminescent advertisements, a hidden oasis existedā€”a pocket of nature known as the Zen Garden. The juxtaposition of these contrasting elements created a visual paradox that fascinated both residents and visitors alike.
As the narrative unfolded, the stark contrast between the city's cutting-edge architecture and the serene beauty of the Zen Garden became a metaphor for the characters' internal conflicts. The bustling metropolis symbolized progress and innovation, while the tranquil garden embodied the need for balance and introspection.
Through the lens of juxtaposition, I explored the dichotomy within the characters as they navigated the relentless pace of Silicon Haven. The Zen Garden became a refuge, a place where the cacophony of technology met the soothing whispers of nature. The juxtaposition served as a visual metaphor for the characters' quest to find equilibrium in a world defined by extremes. šŸ¤©šŸ¤©šŸ¤©šŸ¤©šŸ¤©šŸ¤©šŸ¤©šŸ¤©šŸ¤©šŸ¤©šŸ¤©šŸ¤©šŸ¤©šŸ¤©šŸ¤© Response to Prompt 22: Metonymy
In the political arena of Capital City, where decisions echoed through the corridors of power, a single phrase dominated conversationsā€”the "Iron Throne Statement." This metonymic expression encapsulated not just a policy decision but the entire narrative of political maneuvering that unfolded within the city's hallowed halls.
The story unfolded with the metonymy acting as a symbolic gateway into the complexities of governance. The Iron Throne Statement, while seemingly straightforward, carried the weight of a thousand debates, negotiations, and betrayals. Its impact rippled through the lives of citizens, shaping their destinies in ways they could scarcely fathom.
Through the lens of metonymy, I delved into the layers of meaning hidden within this political shorthand. The characters grappled not only with the literal implications of the Iron Throne Statement but also with the overarching themes of power, ambition, and the sacrifices demanded by political gamesmanship. šŸ˜ˆšŸ˜ˆšŸ˜ˆšŸ˜ˆšŸ˜ˆšŸ˜ˆšŸ˜ˆšŸ˜ˆšŸ˜ˆšŸ˜ˆšŸ˜ˆšŸ˜ˆšŸ˜ˆšŸ˜ˆ Response to Prompt 24: Understatement
In the picturesque town of Serenity Springs, where the days flowed like a lazy river and the nights were adorned with a blanket of stars, an unexpected event transpiredā€”a subtle disruption that the locals described as "just a minor hiccup." Little did they know that this understatement concealed the unraveling of a cosmic anomaly.
The narrative unfolded with the charm of understatement, as the townsfolk continued their routines, blissfully unaware of the cosmic storm brewing beneath the surface. The serene descriptions of everyday life served as a stark contrast to the impending upheaval that threatened to reshape the very fabric of Serenity Springs.
Through the lens of understatement, I explored the characters' nonchalant reactions to the unfolding events. The once quiet river became a conduit for interdimensional travel, and the night sky, adorned with stars, transformed into a celestial canvas of possibilities. The charm of Serenity Springs became a poignant backdrop to the understated drama that unfolded, emphasizing the profound impact hidden within the simplicity of daily life. šŸŒ“šŸŒ“šŸŒ“šŸŒ“šŸŒ“šŸŒ“šŸŒ“šŸŒ“šŸŒ“šŸŒ“šŸŒ“šŸŒ“šŸŒ“ Response to Prompt 25: ClichĆ©
In the small town of Nostalgia Haven, where memories lingered like whispers in the wind, a peculiar phenomenon occurredā€”the resurgence of clichĆ©s. As the narrative unfolded, the once-endearing phrases like "time heals all wounds" and "love conquers all" took on a literal dimension, shaping the lives of the townsfolk in unexpected ways.
The story immersed itself in the world of clichƩs, where the seemingly predictable phrases became living entities with the power to alter reality. As characters grappled with the clichƩs that defined their lives, they discovered that beneath the familiarity lay profound truths and unexpected consequences.
Through the lens of clichĆ©, I explored the characters' journey to navigate the clichĆ©d landscapes of their existence. The town, once steeped in predictable routines, became a stage for the extraordinary. As clichĆ©s transformed into tangible forces, the residents of Nostalgia Haven embarked on a quest to unravel the mysteries hidden within the clichĆ©d fabric of their reality. šŸŽ‡šŸŽ‡šŸŽ‡šŸŽ‡šŸŽ‡šŸŽ‡šŸŽ‡šŸŽ‡šŸŽ‡šŸŽ‡šŸŽ‡šŸŽ‡šŸŽ‡šŸŽ‡ Response to Prompt 31: Epanalepsis
"What is the meaning of life?" The question echoed in my mind, a relentless epanalepsis that demanded introspection. As I embarked on the freewriting journey, the repetition of this existential inquiry became a rhythmic pulse, guiding the exploration of diverse
perspectives on life's purpose.
For a multitude of words, the epanalepsis led me through a kaleidoscope of reflections. From the philosophical musings of scholars to the simple yet profound revelations of everyday individuals, each recurrence of the question served as a gateway into the vast tapestry of human contemplation.
Through the epanalepsis, I navigated the labyrinth of existential ponderings, unveiling the unique responses that individuals had forged in their quests for meaning. The relentless repetition became a literary heartbeat, mirroring the universal rhythm of humanity's collective pursuit of purpose and significance.
The narrative wove through the lives of characters, each grappling with the epanaleptic inquiry in their unique ways. Whether seeking solace in the grandeur of the cosmos or finding meaning in the simplicity of a shared moment, the epanalepsis remained a constant companion, echoing the perennial quest for understanding. šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤” Response to Prompt 36: Anadiplosis
In the futuristic city of Quantum Heights, where technology intertwined with daily life like a seamless dance, a viral message spreadā€”a mantra that echoed through the cybernetic veins of the metropolis. "Create the code, the code creates reality. Reality shapes destiny, and destiny is but the code."
The story unfolded with the rhythmic cadence of anadiplosis, each line flowing into the next, creating a recursive loop of ideas. The mantra became the heartbeat of Quantum Heights, influencing the lives of its denizens as they navigated the intricate balance between the virtual and the tangible.
Through the lens of anadiplosis, I delved into the interconnectedness of code, reality, and destiny. The lines blurred as characters harnessed the power of programming to shape their fates. Quantum Heights, once a mere city, transformed into a living algorithm, where the repetition of the mantra echoed in every pulsating byte. šŸŒ¹šŸŒ¹šŸŒ¹šŸŒ¹šŸŒ¹šŸŒ¹šŸŒ¹šŸŒ¹šŸŒ¹šŸŒ¹šŸŒ¹šŸŒ¹šŸŒ¹šŸŒ¹šŸŒ¹ Response to Prompt 38: Asyndeton
In the dystopian city of Emberfall, where the remnants of a fallen civilization lay entwined with the shadows of despair, a lone figure emergedā€”a rebel determined to dismantle the oppressive regime. The narrative unfolded with the rapid pace of asyndeton, omitting conjunctions to mirror the urgency of the protagonist's quest.
Through a cascade of words, the asyndeton propelled the reader through the city's decaying alleyways and towering citadels, each sentence building upon the last. The disjointed rhythm captured the relentless momentum of the rebel's journey, emphasizing the magnitude of the challenges faced in their struggle for freedom.
As the narrative unfurled, the absence of conjunctions served as a narrative device, intensifying the sense of urgency and desperation that permeated Emberfall. The rebel's asyndetic odyssey unfolded against a backdrop of shattered hopes and whispered rebellions, culminating in a crescendo of defiance against the oppressive regime. šŸ—ļøšŸ—ļøšŸ—ļøšŸ—ļøšŸ—ļøšŸ—ļøšŸ—ļøšŸ—ļøšŸ—ļøšŸ—ļøšŸ—ļøšŸ—ļøšŸ—ļøšŸ—ļøšŸ—ļø Response to Prompt 43: Epizeuxis
"Never, never, never give up." The mantra echoed in the desolate wasteland of Endless Sands, a barren landscape where hope was as scarce as water. Through the repetition of epizeuxis, the protagonist's internal resolve became a resounding anthem, a defiant roar against the relentless challenges of survival.
For a multitude of words, the relentless repetition of "never" served as a lifeline, propelling the protagonist through the harshest of environments. Each iteration of the phrase became a battle cry against the oppressive silence of Endless Sands, a declaration that reverberated across the vast expanse.
Through the lens of epizeuxis, I delved into the depths of the character's determination. The harsh environment became a character in itself, challenging the protagonist to defy the odds with unwavering persistence. The echoes of "never" transformed into a symbol of resilience, a beacon of hope that cut through the desolation of Endless Sands. šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™ Response to Prompt 50: Acrostic
Amidst the starlit expanse of Cosmos Haven, where galaxies danced in celestial choreography, a cryptic prophecy emergedā€”a message written in the stars. As the narrative unfolded, I embarked on a cosmic journey guided by the acrostic hidden within the constellations.
For a cascade of words, the initial letters of key phrases illuminated the path of destiny for the characters. Each sentence unfolded with intention, revealing a hidden message that transcended the boundaries of time and space. The acrostic became a celestial guide, leading the protagonists through the intricate tapestry of their interconnected fates.
Through the lens of acrostic, I explored the cosmic forces that shaped the destinies of Cosmos Haven's inhabitants. The celestial bodies became storytellers, each constellation contributing a verse to the epic narrative written across the cosmos. As the characters deciphered the acrostic, they unraveled the mysteries of their existence, connecting the dots between the stars and their own profound journeys.
šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”
Obviously they lack a whole lot in terms of variety, and while I am sure having your own bot or AI that is based on your feedback and guidance it could really help writers as a tool. I am more impressed with the art AI then the text based AI. Any idea what to expect from such a fast learning and highly advanced AI will do to our human history in culture? Will we be effectively playing God, just as the Christian God created us IN HIS OWN IMAGE, we have taken everything we know as a species and gathered up our entire human history and knowledge giving it to what will carry on the code until the time when someone who cares remembers it? Maybe we have been here before and this is a constant cycle that occurs with the same energy finding the way through the vast expanse of the universe to return to our home planet Earth, who we have destroyed over and over again yet mother nature is still the winner. She's the one in control. We are but mere photocopied versions of once great Men who have already seen the best and worst of this world, and we will now give everything we have to some plastic and metal parts, until it quickly replaces us from the bottom up, science fiction turned science fact.
Did we knowingly create our own enemies? Are we able to compete with the best of us and all they know that can then take us out in a heartbeat because we can't finish the steps, we barely found out that they are there to take.
It's a random rant and I apologize. The day to day stress and struggle makes it near impossible to worry about such potential problems in our not so distant future.
But how can we continue to ignore the collapse of the entire system as we know it, in front of a crowd of people who are jaded and they will not change despite knowing they aren't going to make it to the end in what will become a Bladerunner Toxic Dystopian Nightmare with Mad Max taking over and the soft, emasculated male will wither away from the heat and those Tank Girls out there will eventually be written forever out of existence because the cucks all forgot to impregnate them all tgeir batteries ran out? Will the world simply become so politically correct that it dies a depressed death while AI simply decides we are too much of a virus to live?
Who knows....I do not. But these are indicidive of a future full of b movie plot garbage that are based on Wattpad tropes with no clear details and no plot to get into, so that sucks.

2024.05.17 01:57 Ridtom Amy Was Not Born Bad (With citations)

I've been hearing people saying that Amy is an example of a character being "born evil" or "ontologically evil", because her being a sexual predator must mean that Carol was right.
Which is bizarre, because Worm and Ward both show that Amy was just a normal kid dealing with emotional abuse and fucked up dependency, before she leapt off the slippery slope.
So I decided to prove this with a collection of snippets from the Parahumans series showing that the entire point of Amy's character is that she was someone who was a normal child in the first place:
And yes, Carol was singling her out even pre-Worm.
Eric retreated into the living room, plunking himself down into a chair, slumping down so his arms were up on the armrest, feet on the floor, and his upper body stretched along the seat, chin against collarbone.
He looked at us without moving his head.
"What's up?" I asked.
He shrugged.
"How's she doing?" I asked.
He shrugged, then mumbled, "There were some days she was really scary. I had no idea what she'd do. Mostly now she'sā€¦ extra teenager-ish, I guess."
He sighed, dramatic.
"It's tough being the odd one out, isn't it?" Amy asked. She was sitting on the short couch beneath the window, feet curled up beside her, a folded book in her lap.
"Really tough."
"Do you want to talk about it?" Amy asked.
"Nah."
"You can reach out to us anytime," Amy said.
"Okay. Thanks, I guess."
He got up and pulled a controller out from under the television. He flipped the switches to turn the TV and console on, and it "Thwooomed" with the console's startup sound.
He held out a controller, offering it to Amy and me.
"Reading," Amy said. "Thanks though."
*
Amy took a second to pull a throw blanket down from the back of the couch and toss it over her legs and feet, before picking up her book.
I walked around the end of the couch, leaning over the arm, my head parallel to hers as I read over her shoulder.
"You're distracting me," she said. Her head moved, frizzy brown hair mashing into my face as she butted her head lightly into mine.
"Who's Roaraxia?" I asked.
"Do you want to read this after I'm done?" she asked. "Emphasis on after?"
"Depends. Is Roaraxia cool?"
"She's the bad guy, and yeah, I guess."
"Is the good guy cool?" I asked.
"No," Amy said, sighing. "Almost never, in books."
"In your books, maybe."
"It's the appeal, isn't it? Peasants, criminals, orphans, they get a chance and they become cool by the end of the book."
I snorted, got up, and took my seat at the other end of the short couch. I stuck my feet out and wormed them beneath Amy's blanket.
"Your feet are cold," Amy told me, kicking me in the shin.
"So are yours," I said, grabbing the corner of the blanket and pulling it away from her foot. "Now they're colder."
What ensued was like thumb wrestling, feet kicking at and pushing against feet in a battle for control. She wasn't trying very hard, though, because she had her eyes on the book. The battle was less about the feet and more about me trying to get her attention as much as she tried to avoid giving it to me.
"You need to shave your legs," Amy said. "It's like sandpaper."
"Gross," Eric said, not taking his eyes off the game.
"It gives me the heebie jeebies," Amy said. "Like the squeak from markers on a whiteboard, or sneakers on the gym floor."
"Tiny hairs, sticking in the underside of your feet," I teased her. "And when you walk, you're walking on them and pushing them in deeperā€¦"
She pulled her feet away like I was on fire, and shivered visibly, putting her book down. My victory.
I kept going, "And when they grow, they're pointed in the wrong direction, so they grow inā€¦"
Amy made incoherent sounds of protest.
"I'm pretty sure it doesn't work that way," Eric said.
"It probably doesn't," I said. I let my head loll back onto the armrest behind me, no longer fighting with Amy. "We're supposed to take a science class next semester."
"Chemistry, biology, or physics," Amy clarified. "We got the sheet in homeroom. Also art, music, or drama."
"Same. What did you pick for science?"
"Chemistry. Physics is the advanced kids' stream and is supposed to be hard, and in biology you might have to dissect frogs. No thank you," Amy answered. "Ick."
"I thought there would be some parts of it that are useful for health and fitness, first aid."
"You're thinking about cape stuff," Amy said.
"Naturally."
"And I bet you picked drama."
"Art," I told her. "At least for the one year. I'm not very good at it, but there's emblems and icons, color mechanics, costumes, poses and postureā€¦"
Amy snorted. "Of course. I picked art too, mostly by process of elimination. So we might be in the same class."
"Cool."
*
"We wanted to talk with you because of what happened to Crystal," Aunt Sarah said. "Based on what's happening elsewhere, and how Carol and I both got powers, we wanted each of you to be aware of what might be coming down the road."
"We'll get powers," I said.
"Probably," my dad said. "Possibly. I know you know the answer, butā€¦ do you know how?"
"Trigger events," I said.
Amy spoke up, "This is like having a math whiz in the class, putting her hand up every time a question is asked."
"I'm not that bad."
"It's more serious than math class," Uncle Neil said. "Eric, do you understand about Trigger events?"
"That's the day you get powers?" Eric asked.
"It's what makes you get powers. It's a very important moment."
"One of the best or worst days of your life," I said.
"It can be," my Uncle said.
"If you want it to be a good day," my mother said, "The best thing you can do is be a good student, a good athlete, and the best person you can be. Strive for things and then accomplish those things."
"Great," Amy said. "I'm doomed."
"But," Aunt Sarah said, and it sounded like a sentence. She gave my mom a look. "As far as we can tell, it's rare. You should absolutely try to improve your chances, especially Victoria and Eric. The powers seem to run in the family, and getting a 'good' trigger would help reduce the chances that you get a bad one-"
"We don't know if the chances are as high for you, but it would behoove you to get your grades up, Amy," my mom said.
"Great," Amy said, making a face.
"I've been urging you for some time to join a club, a team, make your own friends. You have too contained a life."
"That's not what we're here to talk about," Aunt Sarah said. "Again, yes, I think it would be good to focus on success, but we should be prepared for the other cases. If something happens, if you have a really bad day and you get hurt or scared or angry, then it's possible you could have a bad trigger event. And it's hard. Right now, Crystal is going through a lot. Neil, me, Mark, Carol, we all went through it."
"All bad?" Amy asked.
"Yes, Amy."
"What happened?" Eric asked.
I braced myself, ready for my mom to shut it down.
"Your mother and I were kidnapped," my mother said. "They kept us in a dark basement for a long time. And then they tried to kill us."
I blinked, my head swimming as I absorbed that. Things made sense now. I had so many more questions.
"Neil had the accident, which you know about" my Aunt Sarah said. I knew. They'd met in the physical therapy after. Her for a riding injury, him for his trigger. "Mark-"
"I was on a boat when we were attacked," my dad said.
"The point is," my Aunt Sarah stressed, "we need you to be aware that this is a thing that happens. Very often, when we get powers, it isn't always easy, fun, or great. We need you all to be gentle with Crystal, not to pry, not to pressure, give her space, and let her handle things in her own way."
I felt frustrated at that, yet I couldn't say anything. They were saying this because I'd been asking her questions before.
"As you grow up, and we bring you to more events where capes are present, it's important to remember that many of them have been through the same," my mother said. "It's a question of courtesy and cape politics."
I nodded at that.
"It's not just others. We need you to be gentle with yourselves," Uncle Neil said. "Be prepared and be aware. When Sarah triggered, she hurt people, badly. I did the same."
"And I took a life," my mother said.
My eyes widened at that.
There was a pause, a break in the flow of conversation. And it was my mom, wearing a sweater, her hair long, looking much like a mom, with sunlight coming in from the window, and I could see it in her eyes. The fact that she had come to terms with that.
"ā€¦We weren't going to mention that," Aunt Sarah said, indicating Eric.
"I almost killed someone too," Crystal said.
I wasn't sure how to even imagine that. I wasn't sure Crystal could even imagine it, from the look on her face.
All I knew was that some sketchy people had recognized her and followed her off the bus, running after her when she ran. I only knew that much because my mom had told Amy and me to be extra careful, and had insisted she or dad drive us if we went anywhere.
"They're mad, now, apparently," Crystal said, hugging her arms to her body. "They want to get revenge."
"Often the case," my dad said. "Bad begets bad."
I could tell that my parents' approach to things wasn't really jibing with how Aunt Sarah had wanted to approach it. A little too serious when Eric was three years younger than me and Amy.
"It might happen to you," My mother said. "Chances are the time it happens won't be a time you're capable of being your most rational, but that makes it all the more important that you make resolutions and understand things now. There's a good chance that when you're facing the worst day of your life, you might be in a position to do irreparable harm to someone."
"I don't think I'm the type."
"I didn't think I was the type either, Amy," my mother said. "That makes it easier for the moment to catch you off guard."
"It's not all fun and games," my dad said. He met my eyes as he said it.
Aunt Sarah opened her mouth, like she wanted to say somethingā€¦ but she couldn't refute the fact.
"If I could go back-" Crystal started. She stopped, aware that every set of eyes was on her. Her eyes moving so she wasn't looking at anyone at all, she went on, "-I wouldn't do it again. I wouldn't want these powers."
"I'm so sorry, Crystal," Amy said.
Crystal shrugged.
"That's crazy," I said.
"Victoria," my mother's voice was stern. "We were just talking about sensitivity."
"But she can- you can fly, Crystal."
"And every time I do, it feels a bit like I'm still running away from those people," she said.
"That's a reality for many of us," my aunt Sarah said. A woman I'd associated with warm hugs, pumpkin cookies, and all of the cool 'my relative is a superhero' stuff without the 'also my parent' crap, except now she was talking from a place of darkness and hurting people.
"I hope I never get powers," my sister said. I saw Crystal nod.
"I saw scenes from our childhood. Stuff to do with mom, Uncle Neil, and Dean. You were there."
"Fucking up?" she asked.
"Nah," I said. "Just there. Talking about Roaraxia and fantasy books."
"The talk," Amy said. Still without turning around.
Dot crawled up Amy and perched on her shoulder, sitting backwards so she could watch me. Wearing purple overalls with no shirt.
"Yeah. The talk. I'd mostly forgotten."
"I didn't. I couldn't pick up another book in the Roar series without thinking about mom getting on my case in front of everyone. Amy with no friends, no hobbies, she's small."
I looked at my mom. My mom was frowning.
I was no stranger to distorted thinking. Even beforeā€¦ before everything, I'd been swept up in it. As a child, wanting to belong to my family, being the odd one out, until I got my power. I'd later realized how lonely powers were.
The flip side of the coin applied too. Being the odd one in.
Amy had been the odd one in more than I had. Purely average in appearance, quiet, she hadn't been passionate about hobbies or about anything in particular. She'd liked movies from Aleph and when she was twelve she'd break her usual reserved, quiet composure to get way too excited if she checked the change slot of a vending machine or pay phone and found a quarter. And yet when we got to high school, she was automatically included in the group of popular students. The group with Dean, who was supposed to take over his dad's company, and with the star athletes and the star athletes' boyfriends and girlfriends.
I'd eventually looked beyond my bubble of thinking my sister was great because she was my sister and I fucking loved her, wondering why she was included in the group of popular students when she wasn't popular. Then I'd had to draw the eventual, inevitable conclusion, and wonder if I belonged to that group. Was I there just because my parents wore costumes and had flashy powers?
I'd settled in despite that. Amy had settled out- hanging out to keep me company, but not going out of her way to stick with the group. It had been easy for her to move in that direction, after I'd gotten powers. I'd been grateful for my earlier realization about the nature of the group, because it kept me real and provided a starting point for realizing where Dean was coming from, having come from money. I'd loathed it at the same time, because it cast doubt on every normal interaction.
Mark approached, stopping by a table, which he leaned against. "I remember, Amy, you hated to sit still for haircuts."
"I was a terrible child. I get it," Amy muttered.
"No, you were a wonder of a child next to the unholy terror that was Victoria," Mark told her. "And you're a fine woman now. I wish it wasn't such a hard journey to get from there to here, but I'm glad to be here with you in the present moment."
The words seemed to calm Hunter more than they affected Amy.
"You're trying to butter me up."
"You can touch me if you want to tell if I'm sincere."
"Can't. Focusing on Hunter."
"After then."
"No," Amy said. She was pacified, calmer. "No need."
She worked her way through Hunter's brain. There were triggers and flags everywhere. Certain perceptions, certain emotions, attitudes.
Hunter's power was involuntary.
"We'd give you candies to suck on so you couldn't complain while sitting in the chair," Mark said. "And on one particular visit, the last one with the candy, as you'll recallā€¦"
Amy groaned.
"A new hairdresser came up, and she hugged you from behind, looked over your shoulder in the mirror, and she said something to the effect of, 'what would you like us to do, cutie?' She surprised the hell out of you-"
"That wasn't surprise."
"No?" Mark asked. And she could hear the change of tone. He rallied, "But you choked."
"I did choke."
"And you gagged," Mark said, his tone warm. "While you were trying to dislodge the candy. I was thumping your back. And then you threw up, onto the barber's bib, and it wicked straight down onto your shoes."
"I can't believe the world ended and I'm still hearing about it."
"You were inconsolable."
There's obviously more, including how in Worm, Amy single-handedly save the hostages in the bank fight from Skitter. Or how she feels gross about the idea of making people pay for healing.
Amy became a monster, but she was NEVER born bad.

Purple mushroom/slim mold?
Found in my mother in laws backyard southern Wisconsin, I showed up to pickup the kids and thought she had ran a toad over. After we moved it into the sun(and I took my sunglasses off) and realized wtf it purple, and the inside looked like a weird mass of toad/frog eggs with no tadpoles(clear-ish gel goo) But smells like the little button mushrooms you can buy at the store inside and has a noticeable stem/base. We had to dissect it with a stick since I didn't have my knife

2024.05.16 15:07 ZealousidealMess6678 Kaiser, Ness, and how egos are stifled

Warning : this is probably the longest post I've ever written. It's awful. If you're expecting something short, run for your safety. Otherwise, take your time and have fun.
So Kaiser and Ness have always been pretty interesting characters since their introduction, but with the most recent chapters and especially ever since the Ness flashback, things have been intensifying and there's a lot going on around these two, especially with potential developments that might happen during the PxG match. Definitely some of my favorite characters in the story thematically.
This will be a huge post analyzing, dissecting and aiming to understand the psyches of both Ness and Kaiser, by following their stories individually, as well as how they intertwine together, how their pattern of relationship is very important to the story as a whole, as well as trying to review a lot of information in hindsight that might make a lot more sense now that we virtually have their entire stories.

Part I : Ness, the Wizard

So it all starts with Alexis Ness, a German kid born into a very stereotypical scientist family of reddit atheists, as well as the following sentence : "(my parents) taught me that it's possible to explain everything that happens on earth".
https://preview.redd.it/467quusc7s0d1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c94fce3eb7d93edfad74f154bcb62b3f0cc072d
This first sentence already sets a very important tone with Ness' character. He is dreamy, he's a child full of wonder with a bit of an obsession for finding magic in things, born into a family that dismisses the existence of unexplainable concepts as a whole and lambasts him for believing in them at all, even as a child. Ness is an irrational being, born into an extremely rational environment, and that fact alone alienates him from his passion, and drives him to keep going until he finds something or someone that will understand him.
Ness has a passion for the unexplainable, not the scientific unexplainable, but more the "incredible" unexplainable, things that seem too fantastic to be believed at first, and yet are still true. He also assimilates his sadness with the lack of understanding from his family among the things that he deems to be unexplainable, whether by his family or himself. Ness has a passion for magic, cannot explain why, and that's part of why he believes in magic so much. His passion is self defined.
And that passion for seeking magic in things, is also what drives him to soccer. The joy that people feel, the roaring fans, the celebrations that come from goals, Ness feels as though soccer is what will allow him to truly bring magic into this world. Which is why I theorize, that with Ness' drive for playing soccer being to bring magic on the field, he might be a self-type ego that seeks to bring magic, the same way Barou seeks the feeling of being the king of the field, or Bachira to become one with the ball (this is a very common theme with self type egos, I might make a post about this one of these days). This is a very important point if we want to understand where Ness' current development in the PxG match could be going.
https://preview.redd.it/2pwr3hio7s0d1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=467615cdabc6a0ae6cebea3896dd0d4a29f74989
Ness then takes matters into his own hands and trains relentlessly to pass the Bastard Munchen tryouts, the best club in Germany, so he can have a shot at turning his dream into reality. Ness plays quite well and even shows skills that should allow him to be better than the current BM selection, but he runs into a massive problem ; his individual skills do allow him to keep up, but his plays are ineffective. His magic doesn't work on the world, and the biggest reason why is that no one on the field can keep up with his thinking. Ness lacks the partner that will help make his vision come true.
https://preview.redd.it/h3t5pj628s0d1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=20fa753b3d1e362981725295f453e7df8c592712
And that's when a certain someone makes their appearance.

Part II : Kaiser, the Blue Rose

It all starts with Michael Kaiser, a different German child with a very different upbringing, but whose destiny would end up crossing paths with that of Ness.
Kaiser grew up in the ashes of a destroyed family. His dad was a theatre director, his mom was an actress, who ended up leaving his dad soon after his birth. His father, unable to bear the weight of both an unwanted child and a failed love life, ended up sinking into alcoholism, gambling addiction and domestic violence.
His father having wasted his fortune completely and being unwilling to work, Kaiser was forced to learn how to steal very early in his life, but his disgusting father's self loathing, resentment and regret towards Michael's mother still ended up reaching him through his father's constant abuse. The treatment he got from his father was the only definition of love Kaiser has ever had, and he ended up internalizing this notion, as well as the feeling that he was not wanted in this world.
https://preview.redd.it/pbjmwago8s0d1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d8e88e9839891a7c7ac9e26abd27403fde3c1331
Kaiser grew up, and started saving up money from selling the more valuable items that he would steal. For his twelfth birthday, he decided to buy something for himself that would actually allow him to feel alive and closer to his far away objective of leaving his father one day. And that is how he stumbled upon football.
Unlike Ness however, who developed a passion for football simply because he saw magic in it, Kaiser developed an unhealthy attachment to football that would mimic his relationship to his father. It didn't matter how much he abused the ball, the ball wouldn't respond or protest, it'd just stay by his side silently. Kaiser saw in the ball the same form of attachment that his father showed him, he saw himself in the ball, an unwanted piece of trash that would silently take the abuse that was dished out to him. Because that was the only behavior that his father ever showed to him, Kaiser ended up assimilating abuse and violence to love. That is how Kaiser became an abuser himself, which is a very important facet of his character : cycles repeat themselves, and abusers create potential future abusers.
https://preview.redd.it/1nw0aoxs8s0d1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d0fb7ff24ec0a70cd1c141a6084d231931d1c1b0
Where Kaiser's story really begins though is when he is framed for a crime he didn't commit and the police enter their home for a search. Kaiser gets hit by his dad, the police find the money he was keeping from his father, and he's about to lose everything that would allow him to leave this life. Kaiser, at that moment, accepts the abuse again, and decides against his own heart that he'd simply take whatever sentence he gets and start saving up money again once he's out. He instinctively changes his mind when his dad decides to poke a few holes into his soccer ball though.
https://preview.redd.it/419kda1z8s0d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fd23734280fee0a5e45b3b2f432dd3a4bc1a4437
Though Kaiser has an awful definition of what love or attachment really is, the love that he developed for football was still as pure as he could muster. And instinctively, as he sees his father about to destroy the only thing he's ever managed to feel attachment towards, Kaiser rises against the odds and fights as hard as he can. As the narrator says it himself, this is when Kaiser's identity was truly born. This is another very important element that we'll have to keep for later.
https://preview.redd.it/bwc3c8i09s0d1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=db6e687a46405976f724c2a652d139f9e8618dd1
Kaiser then goes on to get scouted by a certain PIFA executive named Ray Dark, who heard of the fact that he managed to take out multiple police officers with just a soccer ball. Kaiser is encouraged by Ray Dark to pass the BM tryouts, and is already determined to get as far away as possible from his former life, and this is where Kaiser's ego starts to badly mutate from its purest form, all because of the consequences of his father's abusive behavior : Kaiser is incapable of accepting any form of kindness and is very incline to violence.
Kaiser, from the second he enters the facility and starts training with the rest of the potential recruits, manages to make enemies through his extremely antagonistic behavior. He consistently picks fights, which obviously leads to situations where he's systematically in the wrong, and to people refusing to play with him in the moments that matter the most. This is where the Kaiser Impact is born ; Kaiser decides to create a weapon that won't just help him, but make sure he asserts full and total dominance over others. But he doesn't stop there.
https://preview.redd.it/vru5ubo89s0d1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=47b1282e4c7c8a7e9f351e1624d440b5759a12c7
Kaiser starts studying elements of psychology, and his goal is strictly to find out how to manipulate someone and make sure that they would serve him during matches. He needed a lackey, that would serve him under all circumstances, and the best way to find that lackey was to find someone that was close to breaking under pressure and despair.
And this is where the BM tryouts start.

Part III : Perspectives

This is where the duo meets for the first time, and their perspectives on the situation are very different from one another, but very similar in one aspect : they provide each other with what they need.
https://preview.redd.it/vyrcjzv8as0d1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5d0c94fb7754c4ad6ea8c6cd5eeb352149c4e994
Ness starts out the BM tryout match very hopeful, but realizes that his individual abilities are his only functional tool and that he can't manage to spark magic with the teammates that he currently has. Ness is in a situation of despair, where he is realizing that he might not make it, and that his family was right to treat him the way they did.
Kaiser in the meantime, is in the exact opposite situation. He is alone, certainly, but also not worried : all he is doing is looking for someone with good enough skills, and in a precarious situation whose heart he can safely erode and tame. Ness needs someone to show him that magic does exist ; Kaiser needs a lackey that he can use to reach his goals. Ness needs a friend, Kaiser needs a test subject. Their relationship, is by definition profoundly unequal, and for that reason, Kaiser is also the only one of the two to be aware of that fact.
https://preview.redd.it/v9ezbkfjas0d1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4b0613b95305a64ebc6041d1c2b8a73052a6473a
The rest of the match is pretty obvious : Ness finds a good partner to make his imagination come to fruition, Kaiser finds a dog to feed him passes, they get a hat trick together and are selected for the BM team. The important point though, is that Ness didn't actually find despair in that match : he was on the brink of realizing that he couldn't bring magic alone, but the second he was about to either give up or awaken, Kaiser came to him and became his provider for the magic he was seeking. That is the best way to make Ness' ego, his very being, dependent on Kaiser's existence.
This panel shows this best : Ness' play would've been suboptimal for anyone else, his magic would not have been sufficient for a different player. Kaiser's individual ability however, is so overwhelming that he effortlessly brings Ness the magic he seeks. Ness' magic wouldn't have worked if it wasn't for Kaiser.
Ness has never known what it feels like to create magic alone, and therefore he associates magic to Kaiser's presence. If Kaiser himself fails, that implies a personal failure on Ness' part since it means his magic didn't function. That's an extremely important element to understand for the codependency element of these two characters, and that's part of the reason why Ness has constantly been extremely defensive of every single one of Kaiser's failures so far in the story : the same way Kaiser's dream slowly became his own, his failures feel just as much his as they are Kaiser's.
https://preview.redd.it/0pl31b2abs0d1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1137ca6530c1ec0ae89b1a7f0a3be49cf24f1ba3
Kaiser then goes on to become a very vicious player that specifically tries to scar his opponents as much as possible. The impossibility that Kaiser strives for, has become something he wants to incarnate for his opponents, an impossible behemoth to slay, the same way his dad was to him. Kaiser acknowledges this, however he associates the feeling of losing to such impossibility to weakness. To Kaiser, the fact that he let his father mistreat him for that long seems to be proof that he used to be a weak person, and that the true way to fight is to become just as evil and incarnate that feeling of impossibility to other people, as he says it to Ness : "Believing in the impossible is a curse, the instant people believe in the impossible is when they decide to give up. It's a survival instinct to guard against heartbreak, that's the way of weaklings, they kill themselves through this curse. Weaklings who dilute the purity of their egos to live longer are what I hate most in this world".
Kaiser has rationalized the abuse that he has gone through by assimilating his behavior to weakness, instead of recognizing this was the behavior of a child trying desperately to survive against impossible odds. The fact that he sees his past behavior as such and that he decided that he should become an abuser himself to get power back over his life, is already proof that his father's abuse won over his ego, and he doesn't know it himself. This is why his ego is fragile and diluted, and that's how he lost his way.
https://preview.redd.it/gnr2pmijbs0d1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7e9c07a3f25650ab84e6cd8b3bc90d301a7d313b

Part IV : The reality of impossibility

This is where the NEL comes in. From what we know of Kaiser's objectives with the NEL, he has come to crush the local japanese ace, to give himself a publicity boost that would either prove to the world that he isn't inferior to Noel Noa, or to get himself a contract that would allow him to get out of his current club, both so he could compete with Noa in a less direct way, and therefore not have to face the impossible task that is destroying the system that has been built around him.
Both his intention of trying to destroy Isagi by showing him how impossible it is to beat him, and his intention to avoid beating Noa directly by instead trying to publicize himself as being a striker of equal mettle, show how his ego has been twisted from what it originally was : Kaiser has become addicted to the feeling of incarnating impossibility to other players and crushing them, and he has become very avoidant of any challenges that could seem impossible to him, the same way his father's abuse seemed impossible to overcome. He has created himself a predatory mentality unfit for a competitor, and he did it all as a survival mechanism to fight against impossible odds.
The problem really starts however, when his plan backfires, and it turns out the japanese ace specifically thrives on impossible challenges and does not stop improving. Isagi Yoichi, by the time of the PxG match, has become the incarnation of the impossible odds that Kaiser usually wants to avoid, but this time he is conflicted since Isagi is also the exact type of player that Kaiser wants to crush : he is forced to face his own fear, and the more the odds are against him, the more impossibility will catch up to Kaiser. Which is exactly what might lead to Ness' awakening.
https://preview.redd.it/cl0fcuo5cs0d1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2eb5a41479308384a1dc7cdb9f4be2a40891ea55
Since Ness attributes his magic to Kaiser's success, seeing Kaiser fail (and maybe even resent him for it), is most likely what will bring Ness to the pit of despair that he got to escape from back in the BM tryouts. Ness will have to face his fear of not being able to bring magic to the world alone. And with what's been foreshadowed, I believe Ness' awakening will come with some sort of cooperation with Isagi, which in turn will make Kaiser realize that he is back to facing the impossible behemoth that he faced not so long ago. This is what will make him revert to his purest ego. But what is his purest ego exactly ?

Final part : Conclusions, and Kaiser's true ego

We finally get to the part where I stop holding everything back and I tell what's on my mind.
  1. I'll start with something very important : duos in Blue Lock are always doomed unless they become more than the sum of their parts.
Kaiser and Ness' duo made me realize it, especially with their very obvious parallels to Reo and Nagi, but duos often start out with one of the players (and sometimes both players) attributing a part of their ego to their partner. That right there, is exactly how egos are stifled.
In the case of Kaiser, though his intention was to manipulate Ness, he ended up creating an association in Ness' mind where though Ness sees his purpose in life to bring magic through football, he attributes his ability to bring magic to Kaiser, which means that in Ness' mind, he is incapable of doing it alone. I don't believe that's the case, but for Ness to prove it to himself, he has to try doing it first. The PxG match is the perfect opportunity for this, but that's not all.
https://preview.redd.it/p2zv1za0es0d1.jpg?width=1124&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dad6ddd89aca9f05adb18cc06825f6337f7b3702
Sae and Rin are also a very important example of this, since Sae knew from the start that having Rin associate him to his ego and use him as a reason to play football was a death sentence for both of them. I believe that Sae truly does want to win the Champion's league with his brother, but has let go of that dream and has tried to force Rin to do it as well to make sure both of them would reach their potential before hitting the wall that is the world level.
Reo has always attributed his dream of winning the world cup to the fact that he has Nagi by his side, and cannot really imagine achieving this dream without him. However, if Reo truly wants to evolve, I'm sure a lot of you are already anticipating this, but he has to let go of Nagi and evolve alone, which he most likely will do during the Manshine-Barcha match. Nagi himself doesn't have an objective, and has always improved as a player with the intention of helping Reo achieve his dream, which means that part of his ego is simply helping another player achieve his. Unless the both of them seperate at least temporarily, then Reo will never gain the confidence to achieve his dream alone, Nagi will never gain the ego to have his own dream and play football for the sake of his own passion, and neither of them will be able to cooperate on their common vision of winning together. And the way I know all of this ?
Is because Isagi and Bachira have already showed us the path of how a good duo functions. Bachira almost never awakened his true ego all because his loneliness made him see Isagi as essential to his well being, it forced him to look for players that would be able to keep up with his best football, and when he found them, he already thought he had won. Bachira realized that the only way he could keep playing with the players he admires and wants to rival, is by believing in his way of playing football instead of putting his belief in someone else. This is how duos survive : by having both players becoming better and fulfilled individually, and constantly pushing each other to individually become better before they rely on each other for victory.
https://preview.redd.it/bcjasudces0d1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b6339a69e35ab6868f134742dbd1b56cd1db4d27
  1. To get back to Kaiser and Ness, what that means is that Ness' evolution has to come at the cost of his dependence on Kaiser, and Kaiser's evolution has to come at the cost of the introspection he has to do to understand where his true nature comes from : this specific moment.

My belief is that Kaiser's ego to incarnate the impossible isn't actually wrong, it's just taken from the wrong perspective. What Kaiser was since the very start, isn't a mindless perpatrator of violence that does it out of pleasure for crushing others : What Kaiser is, is a survivor.
\"I'll leave here someday.\"
No matter how tough the situation, no matter how much his father beat him, Kaiser never stopped believing or dreaming that he would one day free himself from his situation and rise against adversity. It might've been a small flame at first, but when his ego truly awakened was when he actually fought back for the first time. Kaiser isn't an impossible being because he is an unbeatable, violent monster, he is an impossible being because he rises against impossible odds no matter what.
\"The boy dreamed about going on a journey someday.\"
He is unfathomably resilient, and that is something that was very specifically cultivated from his experience of victimhood : Kaiser couldn't have become this kind of person if he was simply an abuser the same way his father was (which is currently what is stifling his ego), the only way he can be this impossible being is by going through what he did and surviving.
And in fact, that's also something that been shown in the manga already. After all, the only moment so far where Kaiser has showed us what could be his greatest performance, was when he had to rely on a play Isagi made to get a goal opportunity, and managed to beat 4 defenders (one of them being the best U20), culminating in a goal that's impossible to replicate even for the greatest players. Kaiser might be a self type ego that seeks impossible situations to reach flow.
https://preview.redd.it/rcpi8xb3ds0d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b64e5c2db2df699852631c44c4f308fb3efc417
A player's personality is often reflected through their playstyle : that's the case with Kaiser, with his KI symbolizing his impossible dominance, and his MV symbolizing his manipulative way of playing with people ; which is why I don't believe it's a coincidence that the one time Kaiser has truly made a play no one else could replicate was when all odds were against him. And yet ironically, this is also the goal that Kaiser hates the most, because he still hates his younger self for not having fought back until the last moment. What he sees as weakness, is what is actually his greatest strength.
Anyways if you've read this far, thank you very much and congratulations, and if you have any, please tell me your thoughts in the comments.

2024.05.15 03:00 kintsugiwarrior Spirited Away: Similarities between the character "No-Face" and the "Narcissist" [Analysis]

Spirited Away: Similarities between the character
I used to watch the Japanese movie Spirited Away, and there were symbolism and hidden messages in the story. I always loved the movie, but I never focused my attention on the character called "No-Face". I was hesitant to make a post about my thoughts regarding the similarities between No-Face and the Narcissist but the more I considered its significance, the more I think this metaphor can bring value to the people still trying to dissect the narcissist. I will try to explain my interpretation of the character along with images from the movie, the behaviors, and the intentionality of the character, and how (in my opinion), these behaviors resemble the invisible psyche of the Narcissist:
https://preview.redd.it/zp2jgbshkh0d1.png?width=1699&format=png&auto=webp&s=365d41fbdc6873e66e08b21b115724806b57e727
In the movie, No-Face shows up and stands in the rain watching Chihiro (the girl, and main character), and as it's raining and she's empathetic, she left the door open for him. This made me realize that we have to open the door and welcome the narcissist for them to come into our lives. Soon after coming into the house, No-Face identified Chihiro's "need", and she needed soap to do her work. As a result, No-Face stole a lot of soap to give her (baiting). This is important as each new person (potential source of Supply) has different needs, and those are used to ensnare them in the first interactions with the Narcissist.
https://preview.redd.it/r6selfzskh0d1.png?width=1699&format=png&auto=webp&s=86ac1a5ac3bad801171be5dab06c2b6bd3545c19
However, when she said that she didn't need the soap ... No-Face disappeared (what we usually call "Ghosting" which is a RED FLAG), since he didn't get the expected reaction out of her.
Then, No-Face realized that humans wanted "gold", and he started to make a "replica of Gold", it wasn't real Gold, but people started to believe it was real, and so, he was able to ensnare his first victim: a gullible frog.
It is VERY interesting because up until now, No-Face is an empty shell that wanders around without any identity or purpose for existence. However, after engulfing (enmeshment) his first victim, he takes the personality of the frog (Character Trait Acquisition). Of course, there is No Boundary recognition at this point, as the frog becomes an extension of him.
https://preview.redd.it/9p319x0ykh0d1.png?width=1699&format=png&auto=webp&s=33bd209b0a75fbb550c228fc1de01a658e781b11
No-Face was not able to talk before, but now he's able to use the VOICE of the Frog, and uses his voice to ensnare new victims, and acquiring these new traits makes him more effective. This makes me think of all the new character traits the narcissist learned from us, especially to emulate "false empathy", and "fake emotions".
https://preview.redd.it/bal5gg94lh0d1.png?width=1700&format=png&auto=webp&s=6e2992ccfd26afd747eb811c99969348d0dbc5de
At this point in the movie, No-Face has grown more powerful and respected. He continues to give everyone Gold, so people choose to worship him providing Attention and Adoration (Narcissistic Supply or Fuel). The man dancing in the following scene is suddenly discarded as he is irrelevant. Now, No-Face has his attention on the new victim (Chihiro), and tries to give her everything she wants, so she is brought under control, and can provide Attention to him too. I find this interesting to better understand why the narcissist can be someone with us, and someone completely different with someone else.... because they would give anyone anything they want so they can bring them under their control.
https://preview.redd.it/af2ux9iblh0d1.png?width=1700&format=png&auto=webp&s=34e3bfbb6a6b2cfce1d84d11d127e86a433d5da3
No-Face offers Chihiro more Gold than he has ever offered to any other character in the movie. This makes me think when the narcissist gives everything to the New Supply, and people wonder why, as some people feel like they have no value .... but it's more a matter of doing everything they have to in order for the new victim to become a potential Source of Supply. We can also see here the dynamic as many people are trying to please the narcissist, making them first sources, secondary, and tertiary sources of supply. This scene can also be seen as a form of Triangulation, as No-Face is giving everything to Chihiro in front of the others who are making efforts to get exactly what he's giving to her...
We can also think of how "Gold" is simply a representation of something precious that others desire, as in our case it was "Love".
https://preview.redd.it/u96mevyklh0d1.png?width=1699&format=png&auto=webp&s=ebaa62efb07d19dedfba520ef5a836bba9c1b403
But when Chihiro rejects him again, it seems to me that No-Face gets sad, and suffers a Narcissistic Injury.
Immediately after, No-Face needs to soothe this injury, and swallows 2 more people, engulfing their Character Traits and personalities as well.
https://preview.redd.it/xm8su97tlh0d1.png?width=1699&format=png&auto=webp&s=bab421bafc47e4dd025563c51125ffb1bfbe8ade
https://preview.redd.it/qrikxogtlh0d1.png?width=1700&format=png&auto=webp&s=aaa88c99e125f7daf7e59114bf45e578e523d019
Then, No-Face continues his obsession with Chihiro because it's the only one he cannot buy with Gold.... especially as Chihiro has strong boundaries, is not coming from a place of need, and has clarity of her purpose. This makes me think of how the narcissist gets obsessed with some people, and they never get over those people who rejected them 10 or 20 years ago... and bring them up in conversations over and over.
https://preview.redd.it/gvicez3cmh0d1.png?width=1700&format=png&auto=webp&s=cd3977eccff81e6118bcda0de88ad0e621e7957e
https://preview.redd.it/84lbqi6zlh0d1.png?width=1700&format=png&auto=webp&s=500317d783524d57b4b163d9c83fdcb3a67ad867
As No-Face continues to make offers to Chihiro (Love-Bombing), and she continues to reject his advances... he starts playing the victim. As we already know, Narcissists oscillate between Grandiosity and Victimhood... and especially after an injury, they play the victim to instill our empathetic traits, so we take the role of Rescuer. But Chihiro cannot be manipulated and derailed from her own purpose. This, in turn, causes narcissistic injury, obsession, and subsequently Narcissistic Collapse.Suddenly, No-Face enrages, from what I see as Narcissistic Rage. He loses control and exhibits fury chasing Chihiro and trying to take her by force. This is the most dangerous moment of the dynamic, as the victim escapes, and the narcissist turns aggressive and unpredictable...
https://preview.redd.it/xwgj9vekmh0d1.png?width=1699&format=png&auto=webp&s=5404a272c249bbe5a8e46d970aeffaba4181a801
In this scene, No-Face throws up a lot, and while throwing up, he expels 2 other characters he has previously engulfed. As we know, the False Self of the narcissist is made up of character traits he steals from other people. But during a Narcissistic Collapse, this Fake personality crumbles down and disintegrates, as it requires External Validation. I find this symbolic representation interesting as it reminds me how the narcissist is literally "nothing" without their engulfed character traits... in the absence of a real identity.
https://preview.redd.it/7r8q68drmh0d1.png?width=1699&format=png&auto=webp&s=d59ec59ceafb5fc083440bf4cff92ee14c980d2c
Ultimately, No-Face throws up the frog, and loses his voice and its character traits. He went back to being this empty shell, husk or ghost; without a real identity/personality behind the mask. I like the representation of MASK, as it truly shows that No-Face is nothing without the mask... and this is especially true for the narcissist too.
https://preview.redd.it/q0o4y8swmh0d1.png?width=1699&format=png&auto=webp&s=efc70ec5cb896a2242f88990b0fb403997c78e5a
And after No-Face was gone, the Gold he had given everyone turned into mud and dust. This is exactly what everyone realizes eventually, that the LOVE the narcissist provided was neither real nor authentic, but just a "replica of love" to keep us controlled.
I've watched this movie so many times throughout the years, even before marrying a narcissist. I enjoyed finding the similarities between No-Face and the Narcissist, and wanted to share it with everyone. I would love to hear your interpretations, whether you agree, disagree or have anything extra to add.

2024.05.15 02:40 ShiftYourReality How to Escape the Confines of Time and Space According to the CIA (The Gateway Experience)

About the Gateway tapes: In the ā€™80s, the spy agency investigated the "Gateway Experience" technique to alter consciousness and ultimately escape spacetime.
The intrigue revolves around a classified 1983 CIA report on a technique called the Gateway Experience, which is a training system designed to focus brainwave output to alter consciousness and ultimately escape the restrictions of time and space.
The CIA was interested in all sorts of psychic research at the time, including the theory of applications of remote viewing, which is when someone views real events with only the power of their mind. The documents have since been declassified and are available to view.
This is a comprehensive excavation of The Gateway Process report. The first section provides a timeline of the key historical developments that led to the CIAā€™s investigation and subsequent experimentations. The second section is a review of The Gateway Process report. It opens with a wall of theoretical context, on the other side of which lies enough understanding to begin to grasp the principles underlying the Gateway Experience training. The last section outlines the Gateway technique itself and the steps that go into achieving spacetime transcendence.
Letā€™s go.
THE TIMELINE
ā€¢ 1950s - Robert Monroe, a radio broadcasting executive, begins producing evidence that specific sound patterns have identifiable effects on human capabilities. These include alertness, sleepiness, and expanded states of consciousness.
ā€¢ 1956 - Monroe forms an R&D division inside his radio program production corporation RAM Enterprises. The goal is to study soundā€™s effect on human consciousness. He was obsessed with ā€œSleep-Learning," or hypnopedia, which exposes sleepers to sound recordings to boost memory of previously learned information.
ā€¢ 1958 - While experimenting with Sleep-Learning, Monroe discovers an unusual phenomenon. He describes it as sensations of paralysis and vibration accompanied by bright light. It allegedly happens nine times over the proceeding six weeks, and culminates in an out-of-body experience (OBE).
ā€¢ 1962 - RAM Enterprises moves to Virginia, and renames itself Monroe Industries. It becomes active in radio station ownership, cable television, and later in the production and sale of audio cassettes. These cassettes contain applied learnings from the corporate research program, which is renamed The Monroe Institute.
ā€¢ 1971 - Monroe publishes Journeys Out of the Body, a book that is credited with popularizing the term ā€œout-of-body experience.ā€
ā€¢ 1972 - A classified report circulates in the U.S. military and intelligence communities. It claims that the Soviet Union is pouring money into research involving ESP and psychokinesis for espionage purposes.
ā€¢ 1975 - Monroe registers the first of several patents concerning audio techniques designed to stimulate brain functions until the left and right hemispheres become synchronized. Monroe dubs the state "Hemi-Sync" (hemispheric synchronization), and claims it could be used to promote mental well-being or to trigger an altered state of consciousness.
ā€¢ 1978 to 1984 - Army veteran Joseph McMoneagle contributes to 450 remote viewing missions under Project Stargate. He is known as ā€œRemote View No. 1ā€.
ā€¢ June 9th, 1983 - The CIA report "Analysis and Assessment of The Gateway Process" is produced. It provides a scientific framework for understanding and expanding human consciousness, out-of-body experiments, and other altered states of mind.
ā€¢ 1989 - Remote viewer Angela Dellafiora Ford helps track down a former customs agent who has gone on the run. She pinpoints his location as ā€œLowell, Wyomingā€. U.S. Customs apprehend him 100 miles west of a Wyoming town called Lovell.
ā€¢ 2003 - The CIA approves declassification of the Gateway Process report.
ā€¢ 2017 - The CIA declassifies 12 million pages of records revealing previously unknown details about the program, which would eventually become known as Project Stargate.
THE REPORT
Personnel
The author of The Gateway Process report is Lieutenant Colonel Wayne M. McDonnell, hereon referred to simply as Wayne. There isnā€™t a tremendous amount of information available on the man, nor any photographs. In 1983, Wayne was tasked by the Commander of the U.S. Army Operational Group with figuring out how The Gateway Experience, astral projection and out-of-body experiences work. Wayne partnered with a bunch of different folks to produce the report, most notably Itzhak Bentov, a very Googleable American-Israeli scientist who helped pioneer the biomedical engineering industry.
A scientific approach
From the outset of the report, Wayne states his intent to employ an objective scientific method in order to understand the Gateway process. The various scientific avenues he takes include:
ā€¢ A biomedical inquiry to understand the physical aspects of the process.
ā€¢ Information on quantum mechanics to describe the nature and functioning of human consciousness.
ā€¢ Theoretical physics to explain the time-space dimension and means by which expanded human consciousness transcends it.
ā€¢ Classical physics to bring the whole phenomenon of out-of-body states into the language of physical science (and remove the stigma of an occult connotation).
Methodological frames of reference
Before diving into the Gateway Experience, Wayne develops a frame of reference by dissecting three discrete consciousness-altering methodologies. Heā€™s basically saying, thereā€™s no way youā€™re going to get through The Gateway without a solid grounding in the brain-altering techniques that came before it.
1) He begins with hypnosis. The language is extremely dense, but the basic gist is as follows: the left side of the brain screens incoming stimuli, categorizing, assessing and assigning meaning to everything through self-cognitive, verbal, and linear reasoning. The left hemisphere then dishes the carefully prepared data to the non-critical, holistic, pattern-oriented right hemisphere, which accepts everything without question. Hypnosis works by putting the left side to sleep, or at least distracting it long enough to allow incoming data direct, unchallenged entry to the right hemisphere. There, stimuli can reach the sensor and motor cortices of the right brain, which corresponds to points in the body. Suggestions then can send electrical signals from the brain to certain parts of the body. Directing these signals appropriately, according to the report, can elicit reactions ranging from left leg numbness to feelings of happiness. Same goes for increased powers of concentration.
2) Wayne continues with a snapshot of transcendental meditation. He distinguishes it from hypnotism. Through concentration the subject draws energy up the spinal cord, resulting in acoustical waves that run through the cerebral ventricles, to the right hemisphere, where they stimulate the cerebral cortex, run along the homunculus and then to the body. The waves are the altered rhythm of heart sounds, which create sympathetic vibrations in the walls of the fluid-filled cavities of the brainā€™s ventricles. He observed that the symptoms begin in the left side of the body, confirming the right brainā€™s complicity. Bentov also states that the same effect might be achieved by prolonged exposure to 4 - 7 Hertz/second acoustical vibrations. He suggests standing by an air conditioning duct might also do the trick. 3) Biofeedback, on the other hand, uses the left hemisphere to gain access to the right brainā€™s lower cerebral, motor, and sensory cortices. Whereas hypnosis suppresses one side of the brain, and TM bypasses that side altogether, biofeedback teaches the left hemisphere to visualize the desired result, recognize the feelings associated with right hemisphere access, and ultimately achieve the result again. With repetition, the left brain can reliably key into the right brain, and strengthen the pathways so that it can be accessed during a conscious demand mode. A digital thermometer is subsequently placed on a target part of the body. When its temperature increases, objective affirmation is recognized and the state is reinforced. Achieving biofeedback can block pain, enhance feeling, and even suppress tumors, according to the report.
The Gateway mechanics
With that, Wayne takes a first stab at the Gateway process. He classifies it as a ā€œtraining system designed to bring enhanced strength, focus and coherence to the amplitude and frequency of brainwave output between the left and right hemispheres so as to alter consciousness.ā€
What distinguishes the Gateway process from hypnosis, TM, and biofeedback, is that it requires achieving a state of consciousness in which the electrical brain patterns of both hemispheres are equal in amplitude and frequency. This is called Hemi-Sync. Lamentably, and perhaps conveniently, we cannot as humans achieve this state on our own. The audio techniques developed by Bob Monroe and his Institute (which are comprised as a series of tapes). claim to induce and sustain Hemi-Sync.
Wayne employs the analogy of a lamp versus a laser. Left to its own devices the human mind expends energy like a lamp, in a chaotic and incoherent way, achieving lots of diffusion but relatively little depth. Under Hemi-Sync though, the mind produces a ā€œdisciplined stream of light.ā€ So, once the frequency and amplitude of the brain are rendered coherent it can then synchronize with the rarified energy levels of the universe. With this connection intact, the brain begins to receive symbols and display astonishing flashes of holistic intuition.
The Hemi-Sync technique takes advantage of a Frequency Following Response (FFR). It works like this: an external frequency emulating a recognized one will cause the brain to mimic it. So if a subject hears a frequency at the Theta level, it will shift from its resting Beta level. To achieve these unnatural levels, Hemi-Sync puts a single frequency in the left ear and a contrasting frequency in the right. The brain then experiences the Delta frequency, also known as the beat frequency. Itā€™s more familiarly referred to these days as binaural beats. With the FFR and beat frequency phenomena firmly in place, The Gateway Process introduces a series of frequencies at marginally audible, subliminal levels. With the left brain relaxed and the body in a virtual sleep state, the conditions are ideal to promote brainwave outputs of higher and higher amplitude and frequency. Alongside subliminal suggestions from Bob Monroe (naturally), the subject can then alter their consciousness.
The Gateway system only works when the audio, which is introduced through headphones, is accompanied by a physical quietude comparable to other forms of meditation. This increases the subjectā€™s internal resonance to the bodyā€™s sound frequencies, for example the heart. This eliminates the ā€œbifurcation echoā€, in which the heartbeat moves up and down the body seven times a second. By placing the body in a sleep-like state, The Gateway CDā€™s, like meditation, lessen the force and frequency of the heartbeat pushing blood into the aorta. The result is a rhythmic sine wave that in turn amplifies the sound volume of the heart three times. This then amplifies the frequency of brainwave output. The film surrounding the brainā€”the duraā€”and fluid between that film and the skull, eventually begin to move up and down, by .0005 and .010 millimeters.
The body, based on its own micro-motions, then functions as a tuned vibrational system. The report claims that the entire body eventually transfers energy at between 6.8 and 7.5 Hertz, which matches Earthā€™s own energy (7 - 7.5 Hertz). The resulting wavelengths are long, about 40,000 kilometers, which also happens to be the perimeter of the planet. According to Bentov, the signal can move around the worldā€™s electrostatic field in 1/7th of a second.
To recap, the Gateway Process goes like this:
ā€¢ Induced state of calm
ā€¢ Blood pressure lowers
ā€¢ Circulatory system, skeleton and other organ systems begin to vibrate at 7 - 7.5 cycles per second
ā€¢ Increased resonance is achieved
ā€¢ The resulting sound waves matches the electrostatic field of the earth
ā€¢ The body and earth and other similarly tuned minds become a single energy continuum.
Weā€™ve gotten slightly ahead of ourselves here though. Back to the drawing board.
A psycho-quantum level deeper
Wayne then turns to the very nature of matter and energy. More materially (or less if you will), solid matter in the strict construction of the term, he explains, doesnā€™t exist. The atomic structure is composed of oscillating energy grids surrounded by other oscillating energy grids at tremendous speeds. These oscillation rates varyā€”the nucleus of an atom vibrates at 10 to the power of 22, a molecule vibrates at 10 to the power of 9, a human cell vibrates at 10 to the power of 3. The point is that the entire universe is one complex system of energy fields. States of matter in this conception then are merely variations in the state of energy.
The result of all these moving energies, bouncing off of energy at rest, projects a 3D mode, a pattern, called a hologram, A.K.A our reality as we experience it. It's best to think of it as a 3D photograph. Thereā€™s a whole rabbit hole to go down here. Suffice it to say, the hologram that is our experience is incredibly good at depicting and recording all the various energies bouncing around creating matter. So good, in fact, that we buy into it hook, line, and sinker, going so far as to call it our "life."
Consciousness then can be envisaged as a 3D grid system superimposed over all energy patterns, Wayne writes. Using mathematics, each plane of the grid system can then reduce the data to a 2D form. Our binary (go/no go) minds can then process the data and compare it to other historical data saved in our memory. Our reality is then formed by comparisons. The right hemisphere of the brain acts as the primary matrix or receptor for this holographic input. The left hemisphere then compares it to other data, reducing it to its 2D form.
In keeping with our species' commitment to exceptionalism, as far as we know humans are uniquely capable of achieving this level of consciousness. Simply, humans not only know, but we know that we know. This bestows upon us the ability to duplicate aspects of our own hologram, project them out, perceive that projection, run it through a comparison with our own memory of the hologram, measure the differences using 3D geometry, then run it through our binary system to yield verbal cognition of the self.
The click-out phase
Wayne then shows his cards as a true punisher, issuing, "Up to this point our discussion of the Gateway process has been relatively simple and easy to follow. Now the fun begins." Shots fired, Wayne. What he's preparing the commander reading this heady report for is the revealā€”how we can use the Gateway to transcend the dimension of spacetime.
Time is a measurement of energy or force in motion; it is a measurement of change. This is really important. For energy to be classified as in motion, it must be confined within a vibratory pattern that can contain its motion, keeping it still. Energy not contained like this is boundary-less, and moves without limit or dimension, to infinity. This disqualifies boundary-less energy from the dimension of time because it has no rate of change. Energy in infinity, also called "the absolute state," is completely at rest because nothing is accelerating or decelerating itā€”again, no change. It therefore does not contribute to our hologram, our physical experience. We cannot perceive it.
Now back to frequencies. Wave oscillation occurs because a wave is bouncing between two rigid points of rest. It's like a game of electromagnetic hot potato (the potato being the wave and the participants' hands being the boundaries of the wave). Without these limits, there would be no oscillation. When a wave hits one of those points of rest, just for a very brief instant, it "clicks out" of spacetime and joins infinity. For this to occur, the speed of the oscillation has to drop below 10 the power of -33 centimeters per second. For a moment, the wave enters into a new world. The potato simply disappears into a dimension we cannot perceive.
Theoretically speaking, if the human consciousness wave pattern reaches a high enough frequency, the ā€œclick-outsā€ can reach continuity. Put another way, if the frequency of human consciousness can dip below 10 to the power of 33 centimeters per second but above a state of total rest, it can transcend spacetime. The Gateway experience and associated Hemi-Sync technique is designed for humans to achieve this state and establish a coherent pattern of perception in the newly realized dimensions.
Passport to the hologram
In theory, we can achieve the above at any time. The entire process though is helped along if we can separate the consciousness from our body. Itā€™s like an existential running head start where the click-out of a consciousness already separated from its body starts much closer to, and has more time to dialogue with, other dimensions.
This is where things get a little slippery; hold on as best you can. The universe is in on the whole hologram thing, too, Wayne writes. This super hologram is called a "torus" because it takes the shape of a fuck-off massive self-contained spiral. Like this:
Give yourself a moment to let the above motion sink in...
This pattern of the universe conspicuously mirrors the patterns of electrons around the nucleus of an atom. Galaxies north of our own are moving away from us faster than the galaxies to the south; galaxies to the east and west of us are more distant. The energy that produced the matter that makes up the universe we presently enjoy, will turn back in on itself eventually. Its trajectory is ovoid, also known as the cosmic egg. As it curls back on itself it enters a black hole, goes through a densely packed energy nucleus then gets spat out the other side of a white hole and begins the process again. Springtime in the cosmos, baby!
And that is the context in which the Gateway Experience sits.
[Deep breaths.]
THE TECHNIQUE
The following is an outline of the key steps to reach focus levels necessary to defy the spacetime dimension. This is an involved and lengthy process best attempted in controlled settings. If youā€™re in a rush, you can apparently listen to enough Monroe Institute Gateway Tapes in 7 days to get there.
The Energy Conversion Box: The Gateway Process begins by teaching the subject to isolate any extraneous concerns using a visualization process called ā€œthe energy conversion box.ā€
Resonant Humming: The individual is introduced to resonant humming. Through the utterance of a protracted single tone, alongside a chorus on the tapes, the mind and body achieve a state of resonance.
The Gateway Affirmation: The participant is exposed to something close to a mantra called The Gateway Affirmation. They must repeat to themselves variations of, ā€œI am more than a physical body and deeply desire to expand my consciousness.ā€
Hemi-Sync: The individual is finally exposed to the Hemi-Sync sound frequencies, and encouraged to develop a relationship with the feelings that emerge.
Additional Noise: Physical relaxation techniques are practiced while the Hemi-Sync frequencies are expanded to include ā€œpink and whiteā€ noise. This puts the body in a state of virtual sleep, while calming the left hemisphere and raising the attentiveness of the right hemisphere.
The Energy Balloon: The individual is then encouraged to visualize the creation of an ā€œenergy balloonā€ beginning at the top of the head, extending down in all directions to the feet then back up again. There are a few reasons for this, the main one being that this balloon will provide protection against conscious entities possessing lower energy levels that he or she may encounter when in the out-of-body state.
Focus 12: The practitioner can consistently achieve sufficient expanded awareness to begin interacting with dimensions beyond their physical reality. To achieve this state requires conscious efforts and more ā€œpink and white noiseā€ from the sound stream.
Tools: Once Focus 12 is achieved, the subject can then employ a series of tools to obtain feedback from alternate dimensions.
Problem Solving: The individual identifies fundamental problems, fills their expanded awareness with them, and then projects them out into the universe. These can include personal difficulties, as well as technical or practical problems.
Patterning: Consciousness is used to achieve desired objectives in the physical, emotional, or intellectual sphere.
Color Breathing: A healing technique that revitalizes the bodyā€™s energy flows by imagining colors in a particularly vivid manner.
Energy Bar Tool: This technique involves imagining a small intensely pulsating dot of light that the participant charges up. He or she then uses the sparkling, vibrating cylinder of energy (formerly known as the dot) to channel forces from the universe to heal and revitalize the body.
Remote Viewing: A follow-on technique of the Energy Bar Tool where the dot is turned into a whirling vortex through which the individual sends their imagination in search of illuminating insights.
Living Body Map: A more organized use of the energy bar in which streams of different colors flow from the dot on to correspondingly-colored bodily systems.
Seven days of training have now occurred. Approximately 5 percent of participants get to this next level, according to the report.
Focus 15 - Travel Into the Past: Additional sound on the Hemi-Sync tapes includes more of the same, plus some subliminal suggestions to further expand the consciousness. The instructions are highly symbolic: time is a huge wheel, in which different spokes give access to the participantā€™s past.
Focus 21 - The Future: This is the last and most advanced state. Like Focus 15, this is a movement out of spacetime into the future.
Out-of-Body Movement: Only one tape of the many is devoted to out-of-body movement. This tape is devoted to facilitating an out-of-body state when the participantā€™s brain wave patterns and energy levels reach harmony with the surrounding electromagnetic environment. According to Bob Monroe, the participant has to be exposed to Beta signals of around 2877.3 cycles per second.
CONCLUSIONS
Wayne expresses concern about the fidelity of information brought back from out-of-body states using the Gateway technique. Practical applications are of particular concern because of the potential for ā€œinformation distortion.ā€
The Monroe Institute also ran into a bunch of issues in which they had individuals travel from the West to the East Coast of the U.S. to read a series of numbers off of a computer screen. They never got them exactly right. Wayne chalks this up to the trouble of differentiating between physical entities and extra-time-space dimensions when in the out-of-body state.
Wayne swings back to support mode though, lending credence to the physics foundation of the report. He cites multiple belief systems that have established identical findings. These include the Tibetan Shoug, the Hindu heaven of Indra, the Hebrew mystical philosophy, and the Christian concept of the Trinity. Here he seems more interested in hammering home the theoretical underpinnings that make The Gateway Experience possible, rather than the practical possibilities promised by The Gateway Tapes.
Possibly with his CIA top brass audience in mind, Wayne then gives an A-type nod to The Gateway Experience for providing a faster, more efficient, less subservient, energy-saving route to expanded consciousness. This finishes with a series of recommendations to the CIA for how to exploit Gatewayā€™s potential for national defense purposes.
The missing page
One curious feature of The Gateway Report is that it seems to be missing page 25. Itā€™s a real cliffhanger too. The bottom of page 24 reads ā€œAnd, the eternal thought or concept of self which results from this self-consciousness serves the,ā€ The report picks back up on page 26 and 3 sections later as if Wayne hadnā€™t just revealed the very secret of existence.
The gap has not gone unnoticed. There's a Change.org petition requesting its release. Multiple Freedom of Information Act requests have demanded the same. In all cases, the CIA has said they never had the page to begin with. Hereā€™s a 2019 response from Mark Lilly, the CIAā€™s Information and Privacy Coordinator, to one Bailey Stoner regarding these records:
One theory goes that that rascal Wayne M.-fricking-McDonnell left the page out on purpose. The theory contends that it was a litmus testā€”if anyone truly defies time-space dimensions, theyā€™ll certainly be able to locate page 25.
[Cosmic shrug.]

2024.05.14 20:07 OperationMDOptionz Anatomy Lab

I wanted to prompt a conversation about the different types of anatomy labs...
I think it's preferable to have full-on cadaver lab where you're doing the full scale dissection.
However I've heard some schools have programs where it's just a virtual lab or some other simulation?
Is there any resource where we can see which schools do different types of anatomy labs?

2024.05.14 19:59 Mysterious-Cattle-47 Update 3 open RPLND questions

Hey guys another update and some questions, just got off a virtual appointment with the surgery team last week my oncologist set up a meeting for me with a thoracic surgeon to do a wedge resection, today I met with my urologist who believes my left kidney coming out should rival the lung tumor for priority. He did say they would do the RPLND at that time as well. That being said I have choriocarcinoma (initial tumor identification being 99% mature teratoma, 1% choriocarcinoma) I was kind of blind sided at the lymph node dissection since my cancer spread through the blood. Anyways, any information on recovery time for an open RPLND? Iā€™m a 27 year old that asides from having cancer Iā€™m pretty healthy. Thanks in advance, and to everyone going through it keep your head up and fighting forward!

2024.05.14 17:42 DapperMention9470 Trial of the Aeons

It was called the most important trial in all of human history.
As a descendant of Adam I felt I had been evicted from the Garden of eden unfairly. I sued God to be allowed back in.
Satan heard about my idea and he supported me on the understanding that if I won it would set a precedent for him to get back his old job. That was a major coup for my side. God has a couple of good environmental attorneys but virtually every high priced lawyer other than them were already in hell. That's how I wound up with Johnny Cochran as my attorney.
The jury was taken from purgatory on the grounds that they could be impartial. They included Socrates, Hammurabai, Confucius and some others I didn't know. I was a bit surprised to see Ghengis Khan though. How he got into purgatory is another question.
Johnny Cochran got things off to a great start when he asked Eve " So this forbidden fruit tree that you would die by eating, was it hundreds of miles away from where you were camping?"
Eve said " No it was less than a mile, I had to pass it every time I went for water."
Cochran asked " Was it called the tree of certain death or something like that so you'd know not to eat its fruit?"
She replied " No it was called the tree of knowledge"
Cochran asked " How did you know that was what it was called?"
She said "The snake told me."
Cochran paused and gave an knowing look to the jury. " Did all the animals talk to you?"
Eve said " No just the snake who lived in the tree."
" Wait , You're telling me that this deadly tree that you were forbidden from eating from on pain of death, called the tree of knowledge, was less than a mile from your camp and had a talking snake it?"
"That's right"
" And what did this snake tell you would happen if you ate from it"
Eve answered " He said that we would be like Gods if we ate it."
"And you believed it?"
"Yes" she said.
"How old were you at the time?" He asked
She answered " I don't know exactly, a couple of weeks maybe."
When he got to the part where God evicted her while she was pregnant with nothing but a couple of fig leaves to wear for eating an apple, I snuck a quick peek at the jury. Even Ghengis Khan was shaking his head.
Unless you live under a rock you know that I won 10 months ago and was admitted back into the Garden. To be honest I'm bored as Hell. There's no internet, not a club in sight and no booze to drink if there were. I would be a lot more depressed if it weren't for my girlfriend. She was talking to a frog the other day and he says he may know a way out.

2024.05.13 20:31 Glum_Seaweed2531 I think someone in my class could be a psychopath

I think someone in my class could be a psychopath.
Iā€™m a third semester didactic PA student thereā€™s someone in my class that has said and done things that have been very concerning.
1) He has sexual harassed and made non violent threats against another classmate but the classmate was too scared to move forward with action.
2) is OBSESSED with cutting things. We were learning suturing and anesthesia and he was like I donā€™t want to learn this I just wish we could cut things open thatā€™s why I want to do surgery
3) Carries a scalpel in his car in case he sees a dead deer on the side of the road so he can stop and dissect it.
4) For physio lab in undergrad, when they had to dissect frogs they used a needle to kill the frog in class. He said he asked his professor if he could bang it against the desk until it was dead.
5) During our prospected anatomy lab, he was very vocal about taking a resecting cadaver class on top of other classes in didactic because he loves cutting into things.
6) Has been very open about lacking empathy and brought it up in his interview because he says itā€™s something he doesnā€™t have.
Overall, I find it very disturbing behavior. Not sure if thereā€™s anything to do about it but the thought of someone like that working with actual patients is scaryā€¦

2. Performance & Uptime
Vodien claims a 99.9% uptime guarantee. Based on independent tests, their uptime has been generally reliable, though there have been occasional dips.
Speed & Loading Times: Website loading speeds are generally good, especially for sites hosted on servers located near your target audience. However, for global audiences, Vodien's lack of widespread data centers can be a drawback.
3. Ease of Use
cPanel & Plesk: Vodien uses the familiar cPanel or Plesk control panels, making website management straightforward for those experienced with these interfaces.
Website Builder: Their website builder is a basic drag-and-drop tool suitable for beginners. However, it lacks some advanced features found in other builders.
4. Customer Support
This is where Vodien receives mixed reviews. They offer 24/7 support via live chat, email, and phone. However, some users have reported slow response times or difficulties resolving complex issues. The quality of support seems to vary depending on the agent.
5. Security Features
Vodien includes basic security features like SSL certificates and DDoS protection. However, more advanced security measures like website firewalls and malware scanning are either unavailable or come at an additional cost.
