I left the CofS in 1980. I've watched or participated in the community of ex-Scientologists in the decades since then -- on BBSes, Usenet, ex-Scn message boards, Yahoo Groups, Facebook, here on Reddit, and with many humans in real life. One element that comes up over and over is how other people expect ex-Scientologists ought to behave in regard to the subject. Most of the time, the conclusion someone expresses in an online community is, "You should think and behave the way I [the speaker] does," whether that's a loudly-expressed "It's all bullshit" attitude or something more nuanced.
I'm not speaking here about the division between Freezone/Indy and Completely-Ex people. That's an understandable issue because we fundamentally disagree with each other about the value of the tech and... it's okay to do that. Over the years, most of the Ex-meets-FZ community has found peace with each other. Or at least I grant them full respect for their opinions, and I hope I behave in such a way that they choose to respect me, too.
But rather, the larger question encompasses things like, "How much do/should we say publicly about our past involvement in Scientology" or "What does it take to become an activist to bring down the CoS," where the alternative is, "I did that, it seemed like a good idea at the time, and I'm done with it now." Plenty of people moved on.
Ultimately, we all find our own ways to deal with our past and to choose what/whether to communicate it, as well as to whom.
Sometimes the issue is made more difficult because many people who left the organizations did things while they were in it that they now regret. That forces other Exes to struggle with forgiveness, and that's not an easy thing to do when the other Ex caused conscious, lasting harm to oneself. For instance, there's one guy in particular who deliberately lied to me, causing me to take actions I would not otherwise have taken. I have not yet found it in my heart to forgive him because it was a moral failing and not, "Well, I was following policy, and it seemed like a good idea at the time."
As a result, I'm incensed at the video from Aaron Smith-Levin in which he tells ex-Scientologists that if they had any of the jobs he listed and they remain under the radar, they need to come out and provide documents/statements or he will dox and out them. Nope nope nope. One of the reasons I left that organization is that they wanted me to behave in a certain way. Dude, you ain't the boss of me.
It'd be easy for me to climb on the Personality Parade and make this about ASL, but I'd rather take a step back, here, and discuss amongst ourselves the expectations we each have for communicating about the CofS or those who are or were involved. My own conclusion, after many years, was: Be kind to each other. We all thought we were doing the right thing, at the time and I have the right to decide what I say about Scientology, publicly or privately.

I played years ago when Stormblood(?) first came out on PS4 and had a blast with the free trial. Recently, I’ve seen some of the new jobs and gameplay coming with the new update and I decided to try it out again.
I started from scratch because I genuinely remember nothing from the story, but I’m at a point where I’m like very overwhelmed and not sure what to do. I’m following the main story quest as a Ranger, hoping to get Red Mage as soon as possible. Other than that, I have no idea what I’m doing.
I’ve watched some videos online with like the best start, 2024 new player guides, etc. but I’m wondering if anyone has any tips or things they wish they did earlier on. My fear is making huge mistakes or playing the game incorrectly to where it’s no longer fun.

Summary

I competed for the first time at the USPA Drug Tested Emerald City Classic hosted by DOP Strength Gym in Kirkland, WA on May 18th, 2024.
Here's my Instagram post with videos of my third attempts and a photo with my participation medal (I was the only 110kg submaster male lifter).
I went 9/9 with no red lights, broke my gym PRs on squat and deadlift, and had an awesome time. I competed in the submaster 110kg class in raw full power, weighed in (24h before) at 105.7 kg, and totaled 545kg. I planned to take very light openers, big jumps for my second attempts (15kg for squat and deadlift, 10kg for bench), and then smaller jumps (7.5kg for squat and deadlift, 5kg for bench) for my thirds, and I stuck to that plan. All of my lifts felt great and moved fast except for my third bench, which was a little bit of a grind. My strategy paid off because I had a much more enjoyable day going 9/9 a little light, compared to how I would have felt if I had missed any of my first or second attempts--which I saw happen to plenty of other lifters.
The gym was a little crowded with 60 lifters in 4 flights but the meet was super well run, with good vibes all around. The meet director was super clear at the rules briefing and the spotteloader crew absolutely hauled ass and the whole meet was over at 3 pm. I also got to see several master's lifters set state and national records, including a 72 year old woman, so that was awesome to watch.
My friend and training partner, who is an experienced master's lifter and meet judge, showed up to handle me and that made a huge difference in my experience. He really helped me a ton with understanding the pace, timing my warmups, loading the bar, chalking my back, cheering me on, telling me when to rest, eat, hydrate, everything. He really did a fantastic job.

Prep

I took Steve DeNovi's free 3x Bench - Conventional Deadlift program and ran Block 3 and the peaking block (10 weeks), with modifications to the accessory selection and split to make it 4 days a week. My weekly split was:

• Mon: Primary squat, OHP, pull ups, bicep curls
• Tue: Primary bench, secondary deadlift (cluster singles), chest supported rows, face pulls, tricep pushdowns
• Thu: Secondary squat, paused squat, tertiary bench (Larsen press), lat pulldowns, DB incline press
• Fri: Primary deadlift, paused deadlift, secondary bench, bent over rows, lateral raises

I really enjoyed this program and got a lot out of it. I felt like the peak timing was just right for my meet.

Squat

Squats felt great in prep. My training max for the first block was 425 lbs and I upped it to 435 for the second block. I didn't feel like I under or overshot any of my prep lifts, my RPEs felt accurate.
There was a little confusion about whether squats would be done on a 25kg squat bar or a 20kg power bar, but they ended up using the 20kg Kabuki power bar. The knurling felt great on my back.

1. 170kg. The main thing in my head was to take my time setting up, which I did, and I think it helped calm my nerves. When I unracked, the bar tilted to the right slightly, but I was able to level it out as I walked out. Stance felt solid, got a strong brace, weight felt light and moved fast.
2. 185kg. Better unrack. Felt lighter than I expected.
3. 192.5kg. Beat my gym PR of 415lbs. My handler said my third looked like it moved better than my second. I felt a cramp in my right inner hamstring as I locked it out though, and it's feeling sore today. I felt in control the whole rep but I think I kinda dive-bombed it and went a little too deep and that over-stretched my hammie. Looking back at the videos, I think I rushed the descent on all my squats, even though I had been practicing a slower descent during prep. Something to work on cleaning up before my next meet.

Bench

I kind of wrote off bench for this meet since I made poor progress in prep. For the first 5 week block my training max was 265 lbs and I felt like I was undershooting, so I increased it to 275 lbs, but once I started hitting singles at 250+ they weren't moving well and my butt started coming off the bench. I fixed that issue late in prep by setting my feet further back. My left shoulder had also been bothering me a bit lately, plus I started getting some tennis elbow on my left from the bent over rows or something. So I went with attempts I knew for sure I could hit, and didn't get too excited for bench. I also really felt that bench was a natural "valley" between the peaks of squat and deadlift, in terms of the energy level of the meet.

1. 100kg. A gimme attempt just to practice the commands for real.
2. 110kg. This was the best bench single I've had lately--setup, foot placement, arch, unrack, controlled descent, pause, and press, everything felt solid and it went up so fast that my friend who was working the scoring table shouted "Put some weight on the bar!"
3. 115kg. Unrack felt great, controlled eccentric and pause felt good, got a fast press command, but I think my back slipped a little on the pad, which was kind of slick, and I didn't get enough leg drive, and forgot to cue bar path, so I pressed it straight up off my chest and hit a sticking point, then my back cramped up and my arms started shaking. I barely got it locked out. I originally wanted to aim for 120kg on my third attempt but now I'm glad I didn't because I for sure would have missed it.

I'm pretty satisfied with just getting 9 white lights on bench because I was so worried about my butt popping up or having a brain fart and jumping the start or rack command, and those things didn't happen.

Deadlift

Deadlifts are my best event (long arms) and the pauses and cluster singles in DeNovi's program really helped dial in my setup and make me stronger off the floor. Having access to a deadlift bar in training was nice, as the whip might have thrown me off if I had only ever trained on a stiff bar. Liquid chalk + hook grip + Kabuki bar = unlimited grip.
Toward the end of prep I changed my setup to get rid of my dynamic "hip pump" wedge and just sink straight into my starting position, set my hook grip, and just patiently "leg press the floor away." This change really paid off because it helped me get the most out of the deadlift bar and made my lockouts a breeze.
I was worried about the back cramp during my third bench interfering with my deadlift, but as I started warming up, my back felt fine, however I was feeling that third squat in my right hamstring. Thankfully the pain subsided once I got warm again.

1. 215kg. Felt light, as it should have, like a last warmup. Not much else to say.
2. 230kg. My handler said "earn your third attempt!" I executed my setup and pull exactly like my first attempt and was surprised by how fast it broke the floor and how easy the lockout was. I heard someone say "that's a good hinge!"
3. 237.5kg. I almost went for 240 but kept it conservative because I was worried about my hamstring. I kinda regret holding back now. I took a couple extra seconds to build up a really hard brace before methodically executing my setup. Just as the bar passed my knees they shook a little, and the crowd started cheering for me, but the bar didn't slow down at all so I knew I had it in the bag for 9/9 and just felt ecstatic.

A spectator walked up to me afterward and gave me a really good compliment--he said my deadlifts looked like a hydraulic machine!

Next steps

Now that this meet's behind me, my main training priority will be getting my bench up. I'm going to reevaluate my approach to frequency, volume, specific vs. hypertrophy work, and my diet.
For squat, I think I'll continue doing pauses and maybe add tempo descent work or something to break my dive-bombing habit because I don't want to pull a hammy with a heavier weight at my next meet.
My deadlift feels locked in, so I'm not going to fix what isn't broken. I want to work in some RDLs in my offseason since I haven't done them in a while, but that's it.
There's another USPA meet at the same venue in late September which is kinda soon but I'm really tempted to do it so I can go in more confident, open a little higher, set some new meet PRs, and get my money's worth with this USPA membership. It's about 17 weeks away now so that's enough time to have a few weeks of offseason before another prep cycle.

So I've always wanted to see Iceland and Sigur Ros is one of my fav bands, so I decided to buy 2 tickets for their upcoming show in December. I met this girl online out of no where to be honest I was already with someone that was living with me but I was in the process of getting her put out so we where not together anymore and that hurt it was like a 6 month relationship in real life. hi, i am 42 and i feel all i have in my life is my job and my parents of whom i live with.
i have no children or family or my own, and this failing has been eating away at me. tried to do something about it but nothing availed (career? string of dead end jobs. women? never reply or can ever get close to on a personal level). after my grandmum died a few weeks ago i really do begin to feel the clock ticking and this anxiety and worry, i dont know if thats a midlife crisis.
all i know, this is not just an episode of being 'down in the dumps'. its been something i feel its been growing inside me for years - not in my head, but feeling it from my gut. i'm starting to feel it interrupting my job. my get up and go has got up has gone. i just dont feel like working even though the rational part of me forces myself to just do it. i dont know if i have depression but lately i am in this state where i just dont feel like doing anything and i am just unhappy.
i used to be a gamer in my 30s as a hobby, but i havent even touched my ps5 for over 6 months. i've sold all my games. i just lost the will to play.
i have been seeing a counsellor for 11 years in trying to 'get help' (as everyone keeps saying) but i feel its done hardly anything for me. she has aspired me to do travelling to get out my comfort zone and meet people, which i have done. but thats it. even travelling is becoming meaningless now because i am constantly in this state of preoccupation. i know after a big holiday i'll never see those people again even if they add me on facebook or not (and when they don't, it hurts).
people say talk to friends and family. i have no real friends. never have. when i was a little boy in school, i was bullied. in secondary school i got focused on my studies thinking that eventually, a degree would unlock a life of fabulous riches. but i eventually learned the hard way with years of unemployment that it wasnt, back then. i tried reaching out to people, online via a facebook group, but it descended to insults and hurtful remarks that left me banned and made me punched the wall. my family doesnt know about my feelings, becaise from what i have seen, mental health is seen as taboo. they'll just admonish me, shout me down, tell me to get a grip. i cant really talk to them because they're going to deny theres a problem. and i dont want to break their hearts, especially my parents. i rather soak the pain than bring them in it. i love them too much to see them feel hurt for me.
social groups - when going out, if its not work or a family function, i largely have social anxiety. i so badly want to meet women and get a girlfriend, who hopefully becomes my wife and eventual mother to my kids and form my new family, but i just seem incapable of it. i just cant get close to a woman at that personal and intimate level. if i try, it results in failure and embarassment. at the rare times i did try, it just doesnt come out right. i once went to salsa dancing class in a big city nearby, trying to talk to women, but the anxiety was so overwhelming, i couldnt breathe, and thought i was going to have a heart attack, i had to get out of there. i never been back since. i dont even go to pubs. i think about women more and more - even women i wasnt attracted to at first, drives me crazy now. i remember when leaving a job to move to another, a lady colleague i worked alot with hugged me, and it felt unlike anything i felt before. it was amazing. the softness, the warmth, the care...its as if i was missing that my whole life. i was close to crying. i want to experience true closeness, and intimacy.
thats not to say i'm a virgin. i lost my virginity at 30 to an escort; that was a unsatisfying experience as even then i had anxiety and couldnt perform properly - i did it because i didnt wanted to be the '30 year old virgin'. i just cant seem to get close with women. i tend to obsess about them. my instagram feed is full of attractive women. seeing beautiful ones on tv, even if its just the weather girl or news reader, it drives me nuts. in my job, i work with journalists, and theres many women there. i can talk to them confidently and easily, IF ITS ABOUT WORK. the instances i tried to talk about life in trying to get to know them and get close to them, the barrier goes up. i can tell because they wont add me on fb or whatever. i just cant seem to hack it with women. no woman = no wife = no mother to my children = no family of my own = no legacy.
i appreciate some might say not having family should not mean one is a failure. however, as much as i tried to ignore it, i come from a culture whereby family trumps everything else - money, career, hobbies, everything. i been ignoring it for years. trying to chase a career, which ended up as a string of dead end temporary jobs. losing 15 years of my life to this, living from temp job to temp job, and going to over 200 job interviews in getting secure employment, enduring hundreds of devastating rejections. but, years later, i now have at least job security, which is most important, but am beginning to feel the limit of my pay. trying to chase a career, spending nights throughout the 2010s playing video games and enjoying my gaming career in that, playing adventure games...but now i have reached a point where i've 'run out' of games to play and nothing (except maybe gta6) will interest me in picking up a controller again. i've grown out of it, it seems. i even been travelling more too - i travel far, and so big holidays. from usa, to africa, to europe, to india, and soon to be going to australia... doing all sorts of holidays from cruises, ranch holidays, safari, hiking, group road trips, wildlife conservation volunteering, sailing the mediterrarian - grand, amazing experiences that does suspend my worries... but in the end, i keep coming back to them, this feeling of emptiness.
my big fear is seeing my parents get older and dying from a broken heart caused by me. my dad worked in construction but is retired and now freelances, and he tends to hurt himself in accidents as he gets clumsy. my mother works in a school. i have always lived with my family except during the years i was at university. i feel my mum and dad are my 'best friends' - sad as it sounds -and the thought of them both going to die somepoint in the future, fills me with dread. because i feel i have failed them, in not continuing the family line. failing to secure a legacy for us. to keep us all going, surviving through the next generation. when i think about it deeply, our bloodline has been passed down for thousands of years, surviving through all sorts such as wars, plagues, and revolutions. i feel compelled to continue it, as if its a duty, and i dont want my parents to die with their last thoughts being disappointment. i can see it in my dads eyes already, the sadness. he wants to play with his grandchildren, but he has none, and all his friends shows off their grandkids. similarly with me, i see people i went to school with, and ex-colleagues i used to work with...they all have kids and a house of their own and a car. i have none of that. i stand NO chance buying a house of my own as i simply can't afford it, and renting will be throwing my money away living on other peoples crap. i said to my parents i want to inherit this home when they go, because my memories are here. my history. our family memories. my happy childhood memories, growing up, the birthdays, playing with my brother, my parents, the fun times growing up, coming back from school, doing homework, watching football together on the TV in the 90s, our first pc, all of it. all of these amazing experiences back then, i love to go through again, but this time with my own kids, seeing them grow up, playing with toys, drawing, having a first pet, etc...to navigate life with them as a father, and teaching them what i believe is required to be a good person.
before you say it, i'm not just doing it for my parents. i want a family for myself. i feel if i failed to have children, failed to find someone who loves me, failed to have any friends, failed to have had any influence or imprint on the world nomatter how small - i actually feel i'm not part of this world. to quote ellie from the last of us, my life would not have 'fkn mattered'. its as if i am a 'watcher', if that makes sense, not part of the fabric of this world and civilisation. watching it all from a window. that'll lead me to questions like why i am i here, leading to a probable, and painful, full-on existential crisis. when its my parents' time, when they grow old and die, and if i'm left all alone, i dont think i'd want to live anymore. i'm praying to find something. of course, i know i have to DO something, but my mind draws a blank. i cant ignore what my body is telling me anymore. but then, i step outside the house, and i dont know what to do, socially. when i approach someone, i get anxiety attacks. in my town, people are aggressive - its also possible if i approach a woman here i might end up getting assaulted, shouted at or shamed. sometimes theres no place to really go as i live in a small town. and as you get older, its harder to make friends, as people already have their established circles. i even remember my ex-manager talking to colleagues about this when we had a drink once and she asked 'how do you meet people' even though shes in her 50s and has established family and friends - indeed. how, for those who do not.
for coping, some people elsewhere suggested exercising. this is something i tend to do, but perhaps not enough of. i like to go on walks. theres a public park where i go and feed the ducks. seeing animals makes me happy. when the baby ducks swim to me wanting the kibble food it makes me feel wanted. i love animals. from dogs, cats and ducks - to even wild animals like the tigers i saw in india. i also did some hiking holidays, including going through some american national parks like yosemite, where i saw a family of bears at a distance. travelling is something i like to do too - in fact, i have more 'big' holidays coming up in usa again (alaska this summer), then australia, europe (croatia), the canadian rockies and maybe south america. i do these trips to get that out-of-body, 'blown away' feeling, of being thrilled, alive, and enjoying and experiencing life. it does help. but travelling is expensive. i'm not made of money.

I've known about these games from many years ago, but never tried them till this year when I got XV as a gift from my brother.
Already bought the Pixel Remasters (I-VI, including Strangers of Paradise which seems to have a connection to FF I), VII-X (which includes crisis core, the Remakes and X-2), 12, Type-0, 15 and 16.
But I'm curious about Final Fantasy XI and XIII, because one is online from PS2 as far as I remember and the other one I can't find it in the PS store. Is there a way to play XI? Haven't checked steam for them yet.
So far, I've completed some of them in this order (there's comments about my experience playing each game so you can skip this):
XV was the first one and I loved the characters. I cried a lot with the ending and loved the interactions between them. The camping, cooking, photos and dialogues (Ignis coming up with new recipes while the rest of the gang is dying) felt so compelling that even losing the Regalía hurt me. I swear I've seen Regalia shed a tear when it reached it's end like Going Merry in One Piece. Regalía was the fifth member I didn't even know till I lost it. Can't say I had any high expectation because I played the game without any idea of what to expect (didn't watch any trailer, clip, etc. Also, didn't know about the Fabula Nova Crystallis and it's connection to FF XIII). Although I played the base version because I forgot to download the Royal pack or some sort of update (some bosses were different or missing in the last chapter from I've seen in videos). So I'll replay it once I'm done with the rest.
VI was the next. I've heard many good things about it and they were all true. The intro was pretty much a huge spoiler of the ending lol. Loved the story and it's characters, also cried with it. Celes theme still makes me cry when I remember the cliff scene when Cid dies. The Cataclysm and World of Ruin were so unexpected but still so enjoyable (except for the cultist tower, hated that place, although it's music was wonderfully ominous). Kefka was SO charismatic and fun as a villain tha I'm not even sure the dialogue of him being the first attempt of infusing Magic into someone would implicate that he could have either been a wicked person before the experiment and it turned him way worse than before (like captain america with the serum just boosting what he was already) or just some random person/soldier who got his mind totally destroyed and went mad in the process (might explain the "You sound like the lines from a self-help book" rant).
Then I played FF I. Tbh, the time travel and the "first boss was actually the final boss" twist was the least I expected from the first game. It was enjoyable, although the magic system was kind of bothersome. Thank god that there was elixirs. What I read about the Warmech was true. Harder than the final boss, got myself searching for it like 50 minutes till it decided to appear, just to get myself obliterated. After a few more hours grinding and 4 attempts, finally got to beat it.
Started FF II right after finishing FF I. The key terms were very interesting to get more dialogue and info from the characters. The levelling systems was both good and bad. I enjoyed the idea of Magic and weapon mastery levelling up the more I used them, but as someone who likes to overlevel and get lots of supplies just to avoid using them, it really got tedious and had to resort to hitting myself. Really liked the whole war aspect. Can't say I've felt anything for the characters, even the permanent dead ones. They were just joining and then whoops dead already, except for Minwu. Bloodsword almost obliterated the Emperor in hell lol
FF III was a curious one. Read about the job system and found it very interesting. Also, that Onion Knights were both the worst and best job in the game and I decided to complete the game as just OK from the very beginning, minus some segments that required me to use Magic to either unlock or get inside some places. It was hell. For the first time in my life (and these games), I had to use ítems in battle to kill some enemies which straight killed me in 3 turns or less, although the grinding part wasn't new for me. But farming the Onion equipment, that's another story. Having played games like Runescape I thought grinding for a specific item wouldn't be so hard like there, but sweet RNGesus it was truely one of the longest grinds. The whole "floating continent is just a small part of the real world" reminded me of Hunter x Hunter's Dark continent.
Currently playing FF IV and I think I made a mistake. In the mist cave, I died fighting the boss, then went straight to it again, defeated it, but the game was using a save file from before I got every chest in there, so I'm not sure if I completely lost content for the trophies because I noticed it after getting a bard character. Not sure if I should restart from the beginning.
