I stood alone in the street, me and Daniel having not uttered a single word between us, and scanned the buildings for anything of note. If I were to search each house I would be here for ages. Instead, I would search for any notable structures, maybe a clinic or police station or anything else that may contain something useful. Before I went ahead with that though, I had something more important to do. I staggered over to a wall and leaned against it, breathing heavily and proceeded to eject my stomach’s contents onto the pavement. The vomit splattered on the rubbery surface with some landing on my boots. I stood there panting for a moment, spitting a few times to remove any remnants in my mouth. I heaved myself away from the wall and opened my canteen to wash my mouth and then take a drink. The water tasted metallic, almost like blood. I drank from the vessel greedily, nearly emptying it before placing it back on my webbing. Finally having a moment of relative peace, I only just noticed how hot the day was. My entire body felt sodden with sweat and no doubt sunburn covered the entirety of the back of my neck. I decided that it would probably be best if I got inside a building, if not to search it then at least to shelter from the sun.
I trudged down the street, a little lighter in my step after my recent expulsion of breakfast, passing the occasional abandoned vehicle. If I didn’t know better, I would have assumed this was some sort of town created to test explosions or something. The rubber streets, rounded buildings, and lack of any people made it seem like an idealistic American town in the 1960s. But of course, I knew well that this place once housed people. Once. I shook my head. Regrets of deeds already down was all well and good, but those people would still be dead at the end of the day. Part of me wondered what the wider world would think of what happened here. Would they be disgusted? Enraged? Or would they hold little sympathy for the aliens that threatened to wipe us out? Would the UN imprison us? Quietly discharge us and brush this under the rug? Or hell, they might even give us bloody medals for it. Just like in Afghanistan. Part of me would like to see how the Venlil would react to this mess. The looks of horror on their faces. Humanity in its ugly nature revealed. It would be a diplomatic disaster of course and humanity would find ourselves out of desperately needed friends, but it would be funny perhaps.
My musings on these things were cut short when I passed a structure which caught my attention. It was a sizable building, larger than the houses it was placed between and had a large sign on its front. Of course, I couldn’t read the text, but a large flame symbol was placed next to the alien text. A firehouse or something. With how much these people liked to use flamethrowers, it was no surprise to me that this small village would have a firehouse. The profession and services must’ve been in high demand. I approached its double doors and peered through the glass. Inside was a series of desks and cubicles, the walls of which were relatively short, and other generic office equipment more tailored to the alien’s physique. It looked too corporate for a public service, unless it was a private business, in which case I would not be able to tell. However, under the assumption that it was some sort of government service, I pushed open the doors and stepped into its interior.
The air inside was much cooler on the inside, a welcome relief from the uncomfortable heat outside. The place was dark, the only lighting coming through the windows at the front. I went about trying to rectify this issue, attempting to find a light switch in the front room. After a few minutes of stumbling around in the limited light, I found a switch and flicked it on. The interior lit up as the lights above switched on, providing much needed visibility in the space. After a brief survey of the office, I concluded that there was nothing of interest here. Alien documents were of little interest to me as I wouldn’t have been able to read them with them being written in foreign script and myself lacking a visual translator, a serious oversight by the UN if you asked me but it seemed the UN in all their wisdom were eager to get us out here so we would have to make do.
Walking past a couple of cubicles, I find my way to an office behind a door which had more alien text displayed on the glass panel on its upper portion. Assuming that this room must be important, I tried the handle. It was locked. Not one to be discouraged, I raised my rifle and aimed the stock at the glass and thrust it forward. The rifle bounced harmlessly off the glass with little result. It seems this door would take quite a bit of effort for it to budge. I next tried to bash the door in, backing away from it before charging it shoulder first. I collided with the door and felt little movement on the door’s part and a great pain on mine. This door was bloody tough. Suddenly, a thought entered my head. If this was a firehouse, then surely there must be some sort of tool for breaking through doors? With this newfound idea, I pulled myself away from the mystery office and set off to explore the rest of this facility and find myself an improvised key.
The front office led to a corridor which held two doors on either wall and a T-junction ahead. Both doors proved to be locked and, after my previous attempts to open that other door, I chose to let them be for now. At the T-junction, there were more doors. Who would’ve thought. To the left was a heavy duty looking metal door. Perhaps this was where they stored all the firefighting equipment or something? Lo and behold, the door was fucking locked. A seemingly running theme in this place. I turned around to investigate the other corridor but was stopped short by a metal gate reminiscent of old jail cells. Why does a firehouse have prison cells? Approaching the gate, I was fully expecting it to be locked but, for some reason, the only unlocked door in this strange facility was the fucking prison gate.
“For fucks sake.” I muttered to myself, almost dumbfounded by this logic. Although, perhaps in this ‘perfect’ herbivore utopia, criminals didn’t need to be locked away or would willingly sit in their prison cells. The gate swung open, its hinges creating an awful noise that certainly would alert any prisoners to my presence. Beyond the gate was a set of six cells, each with a door that had what looked to be a sliding piece of metal. Perhaps it was not in my best interest, but I decided to check the cells anyway for no other reason than to sate my curiosity. I approached the first door and slid the metal to the side. Inside was a dismal living space: a toilet, a sink, a bed sticking out of the wall, and a small side table. It looked absolutely miserable. I slid back the metal and moved onto the next cell, my curiosity entirely diminished after the first one. If I found nothing of note in this one, I would dedicate my efforts somewhere else. I still had all those locked rooms to investigate after all.
Months of training just to try to figure out how to open locked doors. What a fucking life.
I peered into another cell and saw absolutely fuck all. What a waste of fucking time. I left the metal slide open as I began to make my way out of prison, intent on finding a way into those locked rooms. Suddenly, a meek voice sounded from one of the cells I didn't check.
“H-Hello? Who’s there?”
There was someone here.

2024.05.02 07:45 ThrowRa736363823 My (24F) boyfriend (26M) of a year broke up with me after 2-3 weeks of arguing, possible issues from PTSD from the military, any similar experiences to help?
My boyfriend and I have been dating a year, we just celebrated our one year and my birthday with my boyfriend surprising me with a nice trip to New York. On the car ride to New York my boyfriend mentioned stories of his time in the Army (6 years) that he’s never talked about and opened up a lot, more than he ever has, and it helped me gain insight. I reflected and felt maybe if I gave him some background on my childhood and upbringing that maybe he could also understand me better. We both have a general idea of each others childhood, I just haven’t fully disclosed to him specific events that have an impact on me even at my age just due to trauma. I built myself up for about a week to finally talk to him about it, which is obviously a vulnerable thing for anyone. However, I was in the middle of a 54 hour work week, I have a stressful job, I’m taking classes and I’m also a mom to a 4 year old (not with current boyfriend) and my boyfriend gave me some attitude that sent me a little over the edge. I brought up to him how I just have felt alone and unheard. This all stems from him just really not understanding my feelings which come from my past experiences, which I had been meaning to tell him about that very week. I did explain this to him. Today, I had a bit of a pregnancy scare just due to some birth control issues I’ve been having for the past month. My boyfriend works overnights as a police officer, I work evening shift as a police dispatcher. So I had to wake him up with a call after some weird brown discharge I’ve had that the internet seems to think is signs of implantation and I’m late on my period, I took a test with a very faint second line. My boyfriend did not have much to say. He actually fell asleep after I called him at 4 and he woke up at 7:30, almost 8pm, I tried telling him I took a second test and that came back negative. And I had messaged him how him saying nothing brought no reassurance to me regardless of his stance on the possibility. This led to us both talking about how it feels like our relationship isn’t what it used to be and my boyfriend said he’s having issues finding any work life balance. My boyfriend does not leave the house unless it’s work, the gym, occasional date nights, and for necessary errands. Beyond that, his internal clock is all sorts of messed up, he sleeps in until 4 usually but even if he gets home on time he could sleep until 6. Him and I find time to spend in between work and taking time off together. Ultimately, he broke up with me because he said if he can’t take care of himself, how is he capable of being in a relationship. I told him I feel like breaking up does not need to be his first option. I have suggested therapy in the past specifically for the army, my boyfriend has survivors guilt from troops being pulled out from Afghanistan – his unit was supposed to go but ultimately that did not happen. My boyfriend also has had a few close friends die of suicide and die in combat. He did do therapy in the army, but can tell that these past issues are the things that trouble him a bit when he is not himself. I care and love him, I feel guilt for making him feel bad for ending things because I am heartbroken and he’s my best friend. I just don’t see how we can come back from this without me ever feeling like he’s going to just up and leave me when we start to argue, which we normally never do. I don’t think it’s possible without therapy and he is opposed to it, he feels as if he needs to figure it out on his own. Do any girls who have boyfriend or husbands that have suffered through the same that caused issues in their relationship, how did you guys come back from it? What could I do for him? I told him I can’t be friends because it will confuse me and my expectations will be a certain way. So what can I do? Is it worth talking to his dad about? His parents have been good to me and have loved me throughout our relationship. His dad also suffers from what it seems to be PTSD after being a responder during 9/11.

So we're gonna build a 3-foot (at least) gingerbread Santa that is crushing a house with lasers (aka red yarn coming from the eyes), as seen in the picture I've attached. EDIT: Solution below. It involves using a Google Sheets script, which I've also included. The "correct" way to do this would be to use alignment index numbers, but in my case that isn't workable so I wrote this script.

This one's a mouthful but I'm halfway there.
First, I have a column where each row has comma-separated entries ("RoughList" sheet):
Apple, Vegetable, Rice, Dog Potato, Gingerbread Man, House, Cat Ninja, Robot, Fire, Explosions
I use the following formula to create a column where each comma-separated item is its own row:
=unique(transpose(arrayformula(trim(split(join(",",RoughList!I2:I),",")))))
Which results in:
Apple Vegetable Rice Dog Potato Gingerbread Man House Cat Ninja Robot Fire Explosions
However, I'd like to take the resulting column above, and then copy it to another sheet (let's say "Final List"), so that I can put a column B next to it that describes each item.
The problem is that my formula doesn't preserve the order of rows, so when new items are added in "Rough Sheet" it will put the items in the compiled column in a different order in the "Final List" sheet.
EDIT: I don't think setting up alignment index numbers will work in my situation, because I'm not comparing a pre-existing set of data that could have unique IDs to an index of unique IDs that match. One thought I had was this:

The script assumes you have 4 columns as above: the formula-rendered Column A, Column B (your static text that is meant to align with rows from Column A), a blank Column C which the script uses to process rows, and a Column D, where it will deposit rows from Column B that don’t match anything in Column A. Column B rows need to start with [MyToken], and MyToken should match the row text from Column A so it can associate A with B.
It behaves as described above, except with the added bonus that if there is a row in Column B entered that lacks a token (or if the token doesn't match anything in Column A), it will copy that row into Column D so you can review it later. This way, nothing is lost and Column A and B stay in sync automatically. (Note: ignore the commented text regarding lowercasing, as that’s not relevant. Also, the code is restricted to a Sheet called “PerksDraft” and you’ll want to change that to the relevant sheet.)
Lastly, be wary that if you edit too quickly like I do, the script may not be as fast as you and sometimes leave Column B wiped. I just use version history to undo that.

- Column A has the dynamic data, let's say row 3 is "Dinosaur."
- Column B has the static manually entered descriptions, but they are prefixed with [Dinosaur]. So row 3 in Column B might be "[Dinosaur] an ancient lizard."
- I write a script that copies all rows in Column B into C. We then wipe Column B.
- The script then loops through the rows in C and extracts the token for the row ("Dinosaur" in row 3). It then looks for a corresponding row "Dinosaur" in Column A that matches. This row could be anywhere in Column A since it's possible the dynamic data was updated and the rows are in a new order. Let's say "Dinosaur" is now row 9.
- On a match, the corresponding row 9 in Column B is updated with the contents of the row from Column C. We then wipe Column C.

Also Charlotte ily and your videos helped me get through this whole story as it was happening.
HOW IT STARTED
I first met my ex husband (Let's call him "Dane") while I was still in High school, he was renting out a room in my boyfriend at the time's house, so we talked often. I wouldn't say we were friends, or even close, but I love meeting new people and talking to people so i don't feel awkward. One day Dane came home really upset and my boyfriend had told me that he had just walked in on his girlfriend cheating on him. Being the empath that I am, I knocked on his door and asked if he was okay and wanted to talk about it. We talked for hours about our lives and relationships and even told him I was planning on marrying my boyfriend at the time. But in the back of my head, I had this nagging feeling- "maybe in another life we could have been together." But by the next time I went over to my boyfriend's house, i found that Dane had moved out, no goodbye, nothing. I thought I'd never see him again.
My boyfriend and I mutually broke up about 4 months later, but we were still on good terms. We both carried on with our lives, 6 months passed, and I was working at a local hardware store. I graduated, turned 19 years old, and lived with two roommates. life carried on beautifully. and then the fateful day, January 14th, 2017: Dane had apparently been working in the area and he saw my bright blue hair in the window of the hardware store. He came in and went "Oh my God! I knew it was you! I'd know that hair anywhere!" We chatted for 20 minutes, exchanged phone numbers and said we'd get together for coffee sometime to catch up some more. Less than an hour later, I got a text from him saying "I just realized it's the 14th! Valentines day! No one should be alone on valentines day!" Obviously, he was a month early, but I thought it was sweet and dorky and we started dating about a week later.
THE RED FLAGS I SAW PAST
Our relationship went on with very little to no problems, We were both crazy about each other and I moved into his place with his roommates after about 6 months. That was when I started to notice little red flags, i caught him lying about very minor things, like if he ate that day and what he specifically ate, how long his workday was, etc. I thought it was weird but I chalked it up to anxiety and left it at that. But then the day finally came where he said he was going to introduce me to his best friend from when he was in the army in afghanistan. (he was a veteran who served two terms, this will be important later) She was a ukrainian soldier who he talked to almost everyday, whether it be texting or calling, though i never actually hear her voice. she had apparently flown into our state for a visit and we would all get together for breakfast. He got a call at 3 in the morning the night before we were supposed to meet her, and he ran out of our bedroom to take the call. I followed and heard him speaking broken Ukrainian frantically into his phone. When I asked what was wrong he said that she had been arrested in Ukraine and he put her on "speakerphone" where I heard a woman frantically speaking in a language I couldn't understand. The phone call continued and I just went back to the bedroom, it was made pretty clear that I wouldn't be meeting his best friend any time soon. The next day I checked his phone for the weather report while he was in the bathroom, and the first thing I saw when I unlocked his phone was a clip of a Russian woman. I played it, and sure enough, it was the voice I had heard on the phone the night before.
I should have confronted him, said something, etc. but alas I was in my people pleasing era, and so love blind that i didn't see it as the giant red flag that it was. I pretended that it never happened. Little did I know, by not saying anything, I let him know how easy it was for him to keep lying to me.
Fast forward a few months and my boyfriend lost his job, so he was driving for uber to keep our bills paid. Obviously it wasn't enough so I ended up working 3 jobs to keep ourselves afloat, facing some of the worst burnout in my life. I started to find myself getting sick more and more often because I was working myself so hard. It was during one of those stints of sickness, lying in my bed, unable to move, that my boyfriend proposed to me. Honestly, i don't remember a lot from my proposal, other than the fact that i was so sick that i thought it was a fever dream, until i woke up to the ring on my finger and thought, "aww it was real!"
We immediately wanted to start planning the wedding, nothing big, but we were both nerds so we wanted a Star Wars theme, i told my dad and he offered to pay for the wedding. And since he worked in the wedding industry, he wanted to make his little girls' wedding the best ever. I started working on altering my moms old wedding dress since he passed away about 7 years prior, Venue got locked down, catering and open bar paid for, everything was set. During the wedding planning my soon to be husband expressed that he wanted to return to the army, saying it was difficult but also one of the happiest times in his life, i fully supported him and prepared myself for what it would be like to be an army wife living on a military base. I read blogs, learned all the military acronyms, and started packing up everything in our house for our impending move to a base. I was nervous, but excited for this new chapter in our lives.
But my fiance started feeling sick more and more often, he would get massive migraines, and faint frequently. Eventually I convinced him to go to the VA Hospital and get himself checked out. He was gone for a full day, and I remember sitting at home having one of the worst anxiety attacks of my life, worried about him. You see, my mom had passed away from a brain aneurysm, and my stepmom was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer about 8 months after my mom passed, luckily, she won her battle, but i couldn't help but feel like he was showing some of the signs that the worst was to come. Sure enough, he came home and told me with tears in his eyes that an MRI had found a mass in his brain, and that he would need to go in for a needle biopsy within the next few days. At this point, we were a little less than a month away from our wedding. We decided not to tell anyone what was going on until we knew with 100% certainty that the mass was a malignant tumor.
THE DAY OF THE BIOPSY
I woke up the morning of the biopsy to find that he had already left for the hospital. I panicked, because he had the only car and there was absolutely no way he could drive home after the procedure. I called, texted, everything, trying to get a hold of him to figure out what exactly was going on. More importantly, I wanted to be there with him to support him. Having been around cancer before, I understood that some people wanted to keep their loved ones at arms length during this stage, and throughout treatment, however I was desperate to be there for my future husband. I started getting texts back, word vomit mostly, none of the texts were coherent. At that point, I panicked. I called my dad and asked him to take me to the hospital immediately. I explained everything, the mass, the biopsy, and how I just really needed to be with him. my dad jumped into action and drove as fast as he could to come get me. I sent Dane a text letting him know that my dad had just arrived and I was on my way. not even a minute later, I hear my doorbell ring. I opened the front door and there in all his glory was my future husband. standing at the door shoeless, mouth open, and with a shaved spot on the top of his head where it looked a little inflamed and had marker writing on his scalp. I asked him what the hell happened and how the heck did he get home and he handed me a note from an unknown friend saying to take care of him and the doctor's instructions for his recovery. Dane could form sentences or words, just word salad, jumbled sounds. I sat him down on the couch and ran outside to my dad who had driven over to come get me. I explained what had just happened and my dad was rightfully confused and upset. Not being able to handle it, I sent him away and said I would call him with any updates. When I returned to my house, I found that all of my kitchen cabinets and the fridge doors were open. I found Dane on the floor in the corner of the living room, surrounded by pieces of crumpled up notebook paper, and he was trying to write out his communication to me. I decided enough was enough and I put the boy to bed upstairs. Two days later, we found out the results, he had a malignant tumor. Stage 3 Brain Cancer. For the life of me I cannot remember what kind of cancer it was exactly, but tell me why FOUR MONTHS LATER I found wireless hair clippers hidden in the back of his trunk, with a sharpie. I must have been in peak Delulu because I STILL didn't say anything.
THE WEDDING CHAOS
My mindset was, I wanted to marry him before, I still wanted to marry him now, even though our plans had to drastically change. no more military base living for us, and now I had to spend what would have been our honeymoon, taking care of him and figuring out a treatment plan for Dane. I let my dad know what the diagnosis was, and my dad decided that we needed to cancel the entire wedding. Of course, this was not what I wanted to happen. We got in a huge fight, but my dad pulled all the funding. He cancelled our vendors, let go of the deposit on the venue, and even went so far as to call every single one of my guests to let them know that the wedding would not be happening. I completely stopped talking to my dad and cut him out of my life. Whether I did this out of the emotional trauma I was feeling or because I didn't want to believe that my dad was right I don't know, but we didn't speak again for another two years. Being spiteful and angry, I decided that we would still have a wedding, even if it wasn't exactly what I wanted. We rented a gazebo at a local park, rented a tent and chairs and had a lovely little ceremony, even cut the Costco sheet cake with a lightsaber. None of my family attended, except for my rock, my little brother. None of Dane's family took the wedding seriously, they all thought that it was a passing phase in his life and that the marriage wouldn't last. (and I mean it didn't) but they had no idea about the cancer diagnosis at this point, and my husband made the call to tell the family two days after the wedding. Every paycheck I received began going straight to my husband. He had a job working at a hardware store, and I ended up getting close with a few ladies in the office since they would accidentally call my phone number instead of his. One day, they called me and I picked up going "Oh hi Elaine! Looking for Dane? haha" turned out she actually wanted to talk to me about Dane. Concerned, I asked what was wrong, hoping his symptoms weren't getting any worse. She told me that he suddenly put in his notice with no warning, and she wanted to run it by me to see if I knew why he was quitting. I was MAD. I worked my ass off just for him to quit and not tell me? At the same time, I checked our bank account, there was only $300 in the account. Where the hell was my money, where the hell was HIS money? All this came about right before I was supposed to take a trip back home so I could see my little brother's high school graduation. We got in a fight, i booked my trip ticket, and told him i would be staying with a friend while i was there. He was upset, He didn't want me to go all by myself, and i told him, "well, maybe you shouldn't have spent all our money on god knows what.". Once i left fresno and made it to my friend's house, he asked me how Dane's treatment was going, since it had been a year since i moved out there. That was when it really hit me. In all the chaos that was my daily life, I hadn't even realized that an entire year had passed. What was worse, he HAD NOT begun any treatment. My friend sat me down and with the gravest voice asked, "OP, are you sure that Dane actually has cancer?" I won't say that the thought hadn't crossed my mind before, but i couldn't imagine that my husband would fake having stage 3 cancer. But at the same time, i had never actually seen a doctor. i never saw any paperwork from his appointments, i realized that this whole time i had just been taking him at his word. My friend and I made a plan to investigate his diagnosis. I called all the hospitals he said we went to, called all the doctors he said he saw, called the VA and medical labs, which all gave me access as I was his legal wife. To my absolute horror, not a single hospital, lab or doctor had anything on record for my husband. There was one clinic that had him on the books for an appointment, but he never showed up. In the end, I was forced to conclude that there was no diagnosis, my husband wasn't sick, and he was using me and those around him to fund his lifestyle of lying in bed all day, playing video games. I know what you're thinking, end of the story right? i didn't go back to fresno, i left his ass there, etc. But I was in such shock that I still didn't want to believe it. So I went back to fresno. The moment I saw him, I told him that he needed to set up an appointment for treatment at the nearby cancer center by the end of the week, or I would be gone. Sure enough, he did, or so he claimed. The day of the appointment I brought his mom with us so I would have a witness. We went up to the new patient check in and they had absolutely no record of my husband anywhere. Our merry band started making our way back to the car, but not before I asked the admin lady to call me if they found any record of my husband's diagnosis. She called me a few hours later, saying she was 99% sure that my husband was never sick at all. I panicked, I already knew it was true but still felt trapped. I called my friend back home crying and upset. He simply said, " tomorrow, 2:30 pm. be packed and ready. M will be there ready to pick you up and drive you home. you get in that subaru and never look back.". To this day I will never be more thankful to have such incredible friendships. I got in the car the next day and never looked back. That was the last time I saw my husband.
THE AFTERMATH
When I finally returned home with only $200 to my name, I couch surfed until I was finally ready to tell my dad he was right all along. I told him everything, and the first thing my dad did was invite me back to live with him until I could get back on my feet. He also invited me to his own wedding. It was a beautiful week-long destination wedding in Hawaii, and I finally got to breathe and pretend the last 2 years of my life didn't happen. I reconnected with my whole family, to this day I am so thankful that they took me back and accepted me back after I completely disappeared. I had just turned 21 now, and I got a job at a restaurant to start making some money to file my divorce papers. Dane never texted me or called me, but his entire family began sending me death threats, because "how dare i leave a man with cancer", and i was a monster for doing such a terrible thing. It was a good thing that He never texted me though, because I got to file for divorce saying that I was an "abandoned spouse". I had no clue where he was, how to reach him, etc. The divorce process was tricky without a lawyer though, and I committed to spending every single day off from work in the local law library in the courthouse. I had to file for divorce twice, since I didn't really know what I was doing, but I was desperate to put this chapter of my life behind me. However, the second time I filed, covid hit. The courts were shut down. I waited almost a year for my ruling, until I finally got the best letter ever in November of 2020. My divorce papers were finally signed by a judge. My family and I all broke down sobbing, so happy that I was finally free. When I told my coworkers, they threw me a huge divorce party and supplied me with more alcohol than I could ever drink.
Since then, I've had amazing relationships, found amazing friends and even found my dream job running a small shop that sells local goods and local artists' work. I've literally never been happier in my life, and now I'm about to get engaged (i accidentally found the ring lol) to the love of my life, and my true soulmate. I have a sweet puppy and my partner and I travel often. Better yet, he has never once lied to me or faked having a terminal illness lol. He kisses the ground I walk on and we will have a real wedding where I can finally have my dad walk me down the aisle. I've since learned that what happened to me was a case of Munchausen Syndrome. (Think Gypsy Rose Blanchard) If this story teaches you anything, let it be this: get receipts, see the red flags (even the small ones), keep your loyal friends close, and never settle for less than what you are worth.

HOW IT STARTED
I first met my ex husband (Let's call him "Dane") while I was still in High school, he was renting out a room in my boyfriend at the time's house, so we talked often. I wouldn't say we were friends, or even close, but I love meeting new people and talking to people so i don't feel awkward. One day Dane came home really upset and my boyfriend had told me that he had just walked in on his girlfriend cheating on him. Being the empath that I am, I knocked on his door and asked if he was okay and wanted to talk about it. We talked for hours about our lives and relationships and even told him I was planning on marrying my boyfriend at the time. But in the back of my head, I had this nagging feeling- "maybe in another life we could have been together." But by the next time I went over to my boyfriend's house, i found that Dane had moved out, no goodbye, nothing. I thought I'd never see him again.
My boyfriend and I mutually broke up about 4 months later, but we were still on good terms. We both carried on with our lives, 6 months passed, and I was working at a local hardware store. I graduated, turned 19 years old, and lived with two roommates. life carried on beautifully. and then the fateful day, January 14th, 2017: Dane had apparently been working in the area and he saw my bright blue hair in the window of the hardware store. He came in and went "Oh my God! I knew it was you! I'd know that hair anywhere!" We chatted for 20 minutes, exchanged phone numbers and said we'd get together for coffee sometime to catch up some more. Less than an hour later, I got a text from him saying "I just realized it's the 14th! Valentines day! No one should be alone on valentines day!" Obviously, he was a month early, but I thought it was sweet and dorky and we started dating about a week later.
THE RED FLAGS I SAW PAST
Our relationship went on with very little to no problems, We were both crazy about each other and I moved into his place with his roommates after about 6 months. That was when I started to notice little red flags, i caught him lying about very minor things, like if he ate that day and what he specifically ate, how long his workday was, etc. I thought it was weird but I chalked it up to anxiety and left it at that. But then the day finally came where he said he was going to introduce me to his best friend from when he was in the army in afghanistan. (he was a veteran who served two terms, this will be important later) She was a ukrainian soldier who he talked to almost everyday, whether it be texting or calling, though i never actually hear her voice. she had apparently flown into our state for a visit and we would all get together for breakfast. He got a call at 3 in the morning the night before we were supposed to meet her, and he ran out of our bedroom to take the call. I followed and heard him speaking broken Ukrainian frantically into his phone. When I asked what was wrong he said that she had been arrested in Ukraine and he put her on "speakerphone" where I heard a woman frantically speaking in a language I couldn't understand. The phone call continued and I just went back to the bedroom, it was made pretty clear that I wouldn't be meeting his best friend any time soon. The next day I checked his phone for the weather report while he was in the bathroom, and the first thing I saw when I unlocked his phone was a clip of a Russian woman. I played it, and sure enough, it was the voice I had heard on the phone the night before.
I should have confronted him, said something, etc. but alas I was in my people pleasing era, and so love blind that i didn't see it as the giant red flag that it was. I pretended that it never happened. Little did I know, by not saying anything, I let him know how easy it was for him to keep lying to me.
Fast forward a few months and my boyfriend lost his job, so he was driving for uber to keep our bills paid. Obviously it wasn't enough so I ended up working 3 jobs to keep ourselves afloat, facing some of the worst burnout in my life. I started to find myself getting sick more and more often because I was working myself so hard. It was during one of those stints of sickness, lying in my bed, unable to move, that my boyfriend proposed to me. Honestly, i don't remember a lot from my proposal, other than the fact that i was so sick that i thought it was a fever dream, until i woke up to the ring on my finger and thought, "aww it was real!"
We immediately wanted to start planning the wedding, nothing big, but we were both nerds so we wanted a Star Wars theme, i told my dad and he offered to pay for the wedding. And since he worked in the wedding industry, he wanted to make his little girls' wedding the best ever. I started working on altering my moms old wedding dress since he passed away about 7 years prior, Venue got locked down, catering and open bar paid for, everything was set. During the wedding planning my soon to be husband expressed that he wanted to return to the army, saying it was difficult but also one of the happiest times in his life, i fully supported him and prepared myself for what it would be like to be an army wife living on a military base. I read blogs, learned all the military acronyms, and started packing up everything in our house for our impending move to a base. I was nervous, but excited for this new chapter in our lives.
But my fiance started feeling sick more and more often, he would get massive migraines, and faint frequently. Eventually I convinced him to go to the VA Hospital and get himself checked out. He was gone for a full day, and I remember sitting at home having one of the worst anxiety attacks of my life, worried about him. You see, my mom had passed away from a brain aneurysm, and my stepmom was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer about 8 months after my mom passed, luckily, she won her battle, but i couldn't help but feel like he was showing some of the signs that the worst was to come. Sure enough, he came home and told me with tears in his eyes that an MRI had found a mass in his brain, and that he would need to go in for a needle biopsy within the next few days. At this point, we were a little less than a month away from our wedding. We decided not to tell anyone what was going on until we knew with 100% certainty that the mass was a malignant tumor.
THE DAY OF THE BIOPSY
I woke up the morning of the biopsy to find that he had already left for the hospital. I panicked, because he had the only car and there was absolutely no way he could drive home after the procedure. I called, texted, everything, trying to get a hold of him to figure out what exactly was going on. More importantly, I wanted to be there with him to support him. Having been around cancer before, I understood that some people wanted to keep their loved ones at arms length during this stage, and throughout treatment, however I was desperate to be there for my future husband. I started getting texts back, word vomit mostly, none of the texts were coherent. At that point, I panicked. I called my dad and asked him to take me to the hospital immediately. I explained everything, the mass, the biopsy, and how I just really needed to be with him. my dad jumped into action and drove as fast as he could to come get me. I sent Dane a text letting him know that my dad had just arrived and I was on my way. not even a minute later, I hear my doorbell ring. I opened the front door and there in all his glory was my future husband. standing at the door shoeless, mouth open, and with a shaved spot on the top of his head where it looked a little inflamed and had marker writing on his scalp. I asked him what the hell happened and how the heck did he get home and he handed me a note from an unknown friend saying to take care of him and the doctor's instructions for his recovery. Dane could form sentences or words, just word salad, jumbled sounds. I sat him down on the couch and ran outside to my dad who had driven over to come get me. I explained what had just happened and my dad was rightfully confused and upset. Not being able to handle it, I sent him away and said I would call him with any updates. When I returned to my house, I found that all of my kitchen cabinets and the fridge doors were open. I found Dane on the floor in the corner of the living room, surrounded by pieces of crumpled up notebook paper, and he was trying to write out his communication to me. I decided enough was enough and I put the boy to bed upstairs. Two days later, we found out the results, he had a malignant tumor. Stage 3 Brain Cancer. For the life of me I cannot remember what kind of cancer it was exactly, but tell me why FOUR MONTHS LATER I found wireless hair clippers hidden in the back of his trunk, with a sharpie. I must have been in peak Delulu because I STILL didn't say anything.
THE WEDDING CHAOS
My mindset was, I wanted to marry him before, I still wanted to marry him now, even though our plans had to drastically change. no more military base living for us, and now I had to spend what would have been our honeymoon, taking care of him and figuring out a treatment plan for Dane. I let my dad know what the diagnosis was, and my dad decided that we needed to cancel the entire wedding. Of course, this was not what I wanted to happen. We got in a huge fight, but my dad pulled all the funding. He cancelled our vendors, let go of the deposit on the venue, and even went so far as to call every single one of my guests to let them know that the wedding would not be happening. I completely stopped talking to my dad and cut him out of my life. Whether I did this out of the emotional trauma I was feeling or because I didn't want to believe that my dad was right I don't know, but we didn't speak again for another two years. Being spiteful and angry, I decided that we would still have a wedding, even if it wasn't exactly what I wanted. We rented a gazebo at a local park, rented a tent and chairs and had a lovely little ceremony, even cut the Costco sheet cake with a lightsaber. None of my family attended, except for my rock, my little brother. None of Dane's family took the wedding seriously, they all thought that it was a passing phase in his life and that the marriage wouldn't last. Context
On September 11th, 2001 Osama bin Laden was catapulted to the top of America's most wanted list with the execution of terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon where nearly 3,000 people were killed. By October U.S. forces were on the ground in Afghanistan leading the fight against the Taliban and searching for Osama Bin Laden and his Al Qaeda leadership.
For years bin Laden evaded the grasp of U.S. forces. It is thought most of that time he was hiding out in Pakistan. Ultimately it would be Abbottabad, Pakistan where the US caught up with bin Laden. In nthe early hours of the momrning (on May 2nd in Pakistan) CIA operatives and Seal Team Six carried out an operation to take out vin Laden. Seals were inserted into bin Laden's compound via helicopter and proceeded to sweep the complex until bin Laden was located, at which point he was shot.
President Obama quickly took to the East Room of the White House to hold a press conference announcing the result of the raid.

Good evening. Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children.
It was nearly 10 years ago that a bright September day was darkened by the worst attack on the American people in our history. The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory -- hijacked planes cutting through a cloudless September sky; the Twin Towers collapsing to the ground; black smoke billowing up from the Pentagon; the wreckage of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the actions of heroic citizens saved even more heartbreak and destruction.
And yet we know that the worst images are those that were unseen to the world. The empty seat at the dinner table. Children who were forced to grow up without their mother or their father. Parents who would never know the feeling of their child’s embrace. Nearly 3,000 citizens taken from us, leaving a gaping hole in our hearts.
On September 11, 2001, in our time of grief, the American people came together. We offered our neighbors a hand, and we offered the wounded our blood. We reaffirmed our ties to each other, and our love of community and country. On that day, no matter where we came from, what God we prayed to, or what race or ethnicity we were, we were united as one American family.
We were also united in our resolve to protect our nation and to bring those who committed this vicious attack to justice. We quickly learned that the 9/11 attacks were carried out by al Qaeda -- an organization headed by Osama bin Laden, which had openly declared war on the United States and was committed to killing innocents in our country and around the globe. And so we went to war against al Qaeda to protect our citizens, our friends, and our allies.
Over the last 10 years, thanks to the tireless and heroic work of our military and our counterterrorism professionals, we’ve made great strides in that effort. We’ve disrupted terrorist attacks and strengthened our homeland defense. In Afghanistan, we removed the Taliban government, which had given bin Laden and al Qaeda safe haven and support. And around the globe, we worked with our friends and allies to capture or kill scores of al Qaeda terrorists, including several who were a part of the 9/11 plot.
Yet Osama bin Laden avoided capture and escaped across the Afghan border into Pakistan. Meanwhile, al Qaeda continued to operate from along that border and operate through its affiliates across the world.
And so shortly after taking office, I directed Leon Panetta, the director of the CIA, to make the killing or capture of bin Laden the top priority of our war against al Qaeda, even as we continued our broader efforts to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat his network.
Then, last August, after years of painstaking work by our intelligence community, I was briefed on a possible lead to bin Laden. It was far from certain, and it took many months to run this thread to ground. I met repeatedly with my national security team as we developed more information about the possibility that we had located bin Laden hiding within a compound deep inside of Pakistan. And finally, last week, I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action, and authorized an operation to get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice.
Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.
For over two decades, bin Laden has been al Qaeda’s leader and symbol, and has continued to plot attacks against our country and our friends and allies. The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation’s effort to defeat al Qaeda.
Yet his death does not mark the end of our effort. There’s no doubt that al Qaeda will continue to pursue attacks against us. We must –- and we will -- remain vigilant at home and abroad.
As we do, we must also reaffirm that the United States is not –- and never will be -– at war with Islam. I’ve made clear, just as President Bush did shortly after 9/11, that our war is not against Islam. Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader; he was a mass murderer of Muslims. Indeed, al Qaeda has slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries, including our own. So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity.
Over the years, I’ve repeatedly made clear that we would take action within Pakistan if we knew where bin Laden was. That is what we’ve done. On September 11th, 2001 Osama bin Laden was catapulted to the top of America's most wanted list with the execution of terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon where nearly 3,000 people were killed. By October U.S. forces were on the ground in Afghanistan leading the fight against the Taliban and searching for Osama Bin Laden and his Al Qaeda leadership.
For years bin Laden evaded the grasp of U.S. forces. It is thought most of that time he was hiding out in Pakistan. Ultimately it would be Abbottabad, Pakistan where the US caught up with bin Laden. In nthe early hours of the momrning (on May 2nd in Pakistan) CIA operatives and Seal Team Six carried out an operation to take out vin Laden. Seals were inserted into bin Laden's compound via helicopter and proceeded to sweep the complex until bin Laden was located, at which point he was shot.
President Obama quickly took to the East Room of the White House to hold a press conference announcing the result of the raid.

Good evening. Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children.
It was nearly 10 years ago that a bright September day was darkened by the worst attack on the American people in our history. The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory -- hijacked planes cutting through a cloudless September sky; the Twin Towers collapsing to the ground; black smoke billowing up from the Pentagon; the wreckage of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the actions of heroic citizens saved even more heartbreak and destruction.
And yet we know that the worst images are those that were unseen to the world. The empty seat at the dinner table. Children who were forced to grow up without their mother or their father. Parents who would never know the feeling of their child’s embrace. Nearly 3,000 citizens taken from us, leaving a gaping hole in our hearts.
On September 11, 2001, in our time of grief, the American people came together. We offered our neighbors a hand, and we offered the wounded our blood. We reaffirmed our ties to each other, and our love of community and country. On that day, no matter where we came from, what God we prayed to, or what race or ethnicity we were, we were united as one American family.
We were also united in our resolve to protect our nation and to bring those who committed this vicious attack to justice. We quickly learned that the 9/11 attacks were carried out by al Qaeda -- an organization headed by Osama bin Laden, which had openly declared war on the United States and was committed to killing innocents in our country and around the globe. And so we went to war against al Qaeda to protect our citizens, our friends, and our allies.
Over the last 10 years, thanks to the tireless and heroic work of our military and our counterterrorism professionals, we’ve made great strides in that effort. We’ve disrupted terrorist attacks and strengthened our homeland defense. In Afghanistan, we removed the Taliban government, which had given bin Laden and al Qaeda safe haven and support. And around the globe, we worked with our friends and allies to capture or kill scores of al Qaeda terrorists, including several who were a part of the 9/11 plot.
Yet Osama bin Laden avoided capture and escaped across the Afghan border into Pakistan. Meanwhile, al Qaeda continued to operate from along that border and operate through its affiliates across the world.
And so shortly after taking office, I directed Leon Panetta, the director of the CIA, to make the killing or capture of bin Laden the top priority of our war against al Qaeda, even as we continued our broader efforts to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat his network.
Then, last August, after years of painstaking work by our intelligence community, I was briefed on a possible lead to bin Laden. It was far from certain, and it took many months to run this thread to ground. I met repeatedly with my national security team as we developed more information about the possibility that we had located bin Laden hiding within a compound deep inside of Pakistan. And finally, last week, I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action, and authorized an operation to get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice.
Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.
For over two decades, bin Laden has been al Qaeda’s leader and symbol, and has continued to plot attacks against our country and our friends and allies. The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation’s effort to defeat al Qaeda.
Yet his death does not mark the end of our effort. There’s no doubt that al Qaeda will continue to pursue attacks against us. We must –- and we will -- remain vigilant at home and abroad.
As we do, we must also reaffirm that the United States is not –- and never will be -– at war with Islam. I’ve made clear, just as President Bush did shortly after 9/11, that our war is not against Islam. Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader; he was a mass murderer of Muslims. Indeed, al Qaeda has slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries, including our own. So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity.
Over the years, I’ve repeatedly made clear that we would take action within Pakistan if we knew where bin Laden was. That is what we’ve done. I've recently been shopping for some rugs. I have a few from my family that are obviously handmade, brilliant 100 year old rugs.
However, you go to these slimy carpet salesmen and they all feed you BS like "we're allergic to machine made rugs" while trying to sell you obviously machine made rugs. They feed you some story about a village in Afghanistan where all the grannies are weaving carpets. They all have 100s if not 1000s of carpets in shops. How many fucking grannies are there?
Then you say I'm not spending 30k on a rug and they immediately drop down the price to 5k and say "special price for you".
So, does anyone know an actual real oriental rug shop in Cape Town that doesn't engage in bullshit? My best bet so far has been following the auction houses, who do actually have great carpets, but getting the right size, colours and condition from auctions is tough.

As is well known, The Entity seeks strong emotions, and is a firm believer that joy and laughter are the best medicine. Feeling somewhat lonely, it has decided to bring in a long lost playmate to the group.
Meet the Pyro.
Pyro is a straightforwards and easy buddy, who aims to make sure everyone has as much fun as possible. Pyro is especially happy when everyone is together, using the Rainblower to spread joy to all in sight! They are shorter than other buddies, but just as much fun.
Weapon: Lollichop. A giant lollipop with which to spread joy, and who doesn't love candy? Share with your friends!
Ability: The Rainblower. Takes 2 seconds to deploy, during which speed is set to 50%. Speed is 80% while the Rainblower is fully deployed. The Rainblower blows bubbles at a range of 5 meters, which have a travel time.
While the Rainblower is out, Pyro will spread fun to all their friends. Any friends who are within the bubbles will proceed to gain fun at a rate of 4 fun per second, and will continue to gain fun at a rate of 1 per second even when no longer in range. Playmates can enjoy themselves even further by rolling around on the ground, although this will stop them from gaining more fun after a few seconds.
However, too much running around will make playmates tired. If they gain more than 20 points of fun, they will become tired, and if they get tired when they're already tired, they will need to rest. Bring them to a swing set so they can relax before coming back to play!

Pyro Perks:
- Mutual Friends: Whenever someone can see your buddy aura, everyone else can also see it for 3 seconds. Whenever anyone can see your buddy aura, you can see them back as long as they are more than 36/30/24 meters away. Don't leave anyone out, let's all play together!
- Taking Turns: Whenever someone tries to take a friend off the swing set and it's not their turn, you may kindly remind them to stop. You are then free to take them to another swing set. Additionally, if you are currently leading a tired friend to the swings, you may take another friend already on the swings off, trading places, which grants them a 50% haste bonus for 7/6/5 seconds so they can run and play with everyone else!
- Best Friend: Whoever is the Entity's best friend gets special attention from you. You no longer gain
bloodlustexcitement, except when chasing the best friend, in which case you build it 50/60/70% faster. The Entity has a little secret though: everyone is The Entity's best friend, and whenever you catch a best friend and put them on the swings, someone else becomes the best friend!

Im not gonna write some essay like some of you, it just isnt me and I still have a lot to work through. I (37m) had a shitty childhood not as bad as some of you had it, but bad, lots of physical and emotional abuse from both parents, but mainly from my mom. I was the 2nd oldest child (theres 4 of us; older sis, me, younger bro, younger sis) she has her own trauma caused by my grandparents and Im trying to end the cycle with my own daughter but it has been hard but I am making progress. my entire childhood (at least parts I havent completely blocked out) I was the whipping boy in the family, I got blamed for everything and beaten pretty severely for it (younger brother and younger sis are the golden children). children in the house were supposed to be seen not heard, so yeah this went on for a lot of my life until I met my ex-wife who I am still forever grateful for helping me when I needed it most and am still friends with to this day. after we started dating and I was able to move in with her and her mom at 19. Some other context my mom is a hardcore mormon and we were never well off but we always had to pay our tithing no matter what.

Moving forward I tried to be better for my girlfriend who became my fiance and my wife when I joined the army (2011), we moved across the country (both originally from CA) and I find out Im being sent to afghanistan, well it wasnt pretty, my unit had a rough go of it (this was 2012) which did not help any of my repressed trauma. fast forward a few years later and I wasnt doing good so my ex divorced me and took our daughter and I fell hard, lots of drinking and majorly depressed but I wasnt getting any help no matter how I tried (this was before a lot of changes happened in the army) finally one officer I know and am kindof chummy with is talking with me and sees I am suffering from PTSD and a host of other issues (he suffers from PTSD due to his time as enlisted infantry before he got out the first time then went to school to come back as a therapist) and finally I started getting help, it wasnt great at first but it was a start. fast forward to 2019 and I find out its bad enough they are gonna retire me, so 2020 I am retired from the army full honors. I still have issues but I am getting better. My Ex doesnt blame me as she had her own issues and understands I went through a lot of trauma but we are both working on them.
I mostly work these days as a youtubestreamer (though I dont make a lot, mostly live off my VA) But I am going back to school to become a video game developer as I love gaming, its been my one comfort my entire life. Ive learned I dont have to apologize for everything I do, or try to please everyone and I have started to learn I can be me and be loud if I want to in my own house (I rent because well crappy credit and the market sucks). I have taught my daughter its okay to be different if you want and be herself as best as I can. I carry a coach bag because normal wallets mess up my bad back and well I like them, also I like getting my nails done, usually bright colors(keeps me from biting my nails). I still have a lot to work through but Im getting there.

The United States govt. has done a number of terrible mistakes in the last few years. The haphazard exit from Afghanistan and handing over the power to cruel and misogynist Taliban, lack of leadership when Russian Invasion happened, funding multiple wars in Europe and Middle East when the home itself is struggling with inflation, recession and fiscal deficit. And don't even talk about press control and how opposition voices in are being shut (Tucker Carlson's firing from Fox, Trump's legal persecution, etc.).
And despite all of this, nobody is actually blaming Biden. And why should they as he gives the impression of a perfect puppet - one who struggles with memory and sentence building, and yet the key decisions are being taken and the country is being run by someone. So who is pulling the strings?
Now here is the most mysterious part of this conspiracy theory - If I were to install a puppet in the White House, why would I choose a feeble old man who actually behaves like a puppet? Wouldn't it make sense to install one who behaves assertively and doesn't look like a puppet? I honestly couldn't find an answer to this question.
The problem here is that this "puppet model" has worked almost perfectly in the US. The worry is that other country leaders might also try and copy this model in their home countries to escape responsibility and switch/divert it to somewhere else. After all, that is what most leaders have been doing lately at various levels, be it politics or business.

The Shaposhnikovs are Czech Republic citizens who moved there in the early 1990s. The publication states that Alyona Shaposhnikova possesses a passport bearing a number exclusive to Russian intelligence officers. The Czech authorities suspect the Shaposhnikovs of involvement in the 2014 explosions at the Vrbetice ammunition depots. Nikolai Shaposhnikov graduated from the Baku Military Command School’s Engineering Department. He fought in Afghanistan for three years. They sent Shaposhnikov to Czechoslovakia in 1987, where he served as a motorized rifle company commander. Shortly after the Soviet troops left Czechoslovakia, Shaposhnikov returned to the country and applied for political asylum, presenting his expulsion from the Communist Party. He received political asylum in August 1991, and a few months later, his wife, Alena, who resided in Kyiv, and their two children also received the same status. In 1999, after several refusals, Nikolai received Czech citizenship, and Alena received a Czech passport in 2004. In the early 2000s, Shaposhnikov got a job at Imex, an arms dealer. Its head was Petr Bernatik, a former “secret informant” of the Czechoslovakian State Security Service. The publication says that Shaposhnikov was looking for new clients for the company. Imex was a tenant of the warehouses in Vrbetice, where the explosions occurred in October 2014. The Czech media outlet Respekt reported in May 2022 that Nikolai and Alena Shaposhnikov were facing a criminal espionage case. The Czech police gained access to the correspondence between the Shaposhnikovs and the head of the GRU military unit No. 29155, General Andrei Averyanov. “The content of the emails was confidential information about weapons depots, such as the movement of military equipment,” the source said. The Shaposhnikov family’s daughter confirmed to journalists that they had met with Averyanov. It happened in early October 2014 in Lisbon. An explosion at an ammunition depot in the village of Vrbetice in the Czech Republic occurred on October 16. The Insider writes that in 2009, the Shaposhnikovs bought a villa on the Halkidiki peninsula in Greece for 275 thousand euros. Alena Shaposhnikova told investigators that she financed the purchase of the villa with “her parents’ money.” The publication notes that Shaposhnikova’s parents are pensioners who live in Kyiv. The Insider calls the villa in Greece a “safe house” for members of the GRU’s 29155 unit, who allegedly began to fly “regularly” to the city of Thessaloniki, an hour’s drive from the villa, as soon as the Shaposhnikovs settled there. In particular, Averyanov flew to Thessaloniki and stayed there from July 15 to 21, 2013. A year later, he was back in Thessaloniki on his way back from Amsterdam. According to The Insider, at least four other members of military unit 29155 flew to Thessaloniki between 2012 and 2018. The publication also notes that on April 25, 2014, GRU officer Alexei Kapinos arrived in Thessaloniki on a diplomatic passport. Shaposhnikov called the Czech investigator a “family friend.” Three members of GRU military unit 29155 arrived in Bulgaria the day before, with the intention of poisoning local businessman Omelyan Gebrev. The businessman himself told The Insider that the Shaposhnikovs had met him back in 2012 and “actively enforced communication.” Gebrev was considered a supplier of ammunition to the Ukrainian army when the poisoning occurred. Two sources who were involved in arms procurement in Ukraine at the time told the newspaper that after Gebrev’s poisoning, Nikolai Shaposhnikov offered “Ukrainian government buyers a reliable replacement” for Gebrev. Ukraine did not purchase ammunition from the proposed supplier because of the unsatisfactory quality of the goods. According to the Czech police, Alena Shaposhnikova sent General Averyanov information about upcoming arms sales deals discovered by her husband while working at Imex via email. It is believed that the GRU used this information for sabotage operations in the event that these deliveries were detrimental to Russia’s military interests. Investigators believe that on at least three occasions, the Shaposhnikovs provided physical access to Imex-operated storage facilities so that GRU officers could install remote-controlled detonators. According to the travel and border crossing data obtained by The Insider, Alena Shaposhnikova “secretly” received a Russian passport from a range of numbers reserved for members of Unit 29155. According to the publication, Shaposhnikova used this passport to travel to Russia twice: in December 2015 and in December 2017. The Insider asserts that she received the title of Hero of Russia during her first trip. There is no official confirmation of this information. Investigator Khristo Grozev previously reported that GRU officers Alexander Mishkin and Anatoly Chepiga received the title of Hero of Russia for their explosions at warehouses in the Czech Republic. Alena and Nikolai Shaposhnikov refused to come to the Czech Republic for interrogation, so representatives of the Greek and Bulgarian authorities talked to them. They claimed that all their ties with GRU members were “personal” or due to Imex’s business interests. They didn’t know that Kapino and Averyanov were Russian intelligence officers, and they claimed that they did not knowingly assist the GRU in any of the sabotage operations. In February 2024, Nikolai Shaposhnikov died. The cause of death is unknown, but The Insider claims that Shaposhnikov began abusing alcohol after becoming the subject of a Czech police investigation. Alena Shaposhnikova lives in Greece. As The Insider has previously claimed, GRU unit 29155 has been organizing explosions in EU countries since 2011. According to the publication, the first sabotage took place at a warehouse in Bulgaria; ammunition was delivered there that could have been intended for sale to Georgia. In 2021, the Czech Republic accused Russia of organizing an explosion that occurred on October 16, 2014, at an arms depot in the eastern part of the country, which led to numerous destructions and the deaths of two local residents. It was only six and a half years later that the Czech government officially accused Russia of organizing this sabotage. In this regard, Prague expelled 18 Russian diplomats, and Russia responded by declaring 20 employees of the Czech Embassy in Moscow persona non grata. After that, the Czech Republic announced that it was expelling about 70 more Russian embassy staff.
