Hello all! I recently got into commander and will soon head to my LGS to play but I wasn't sure which deck I want to use. I watched a view videos and saw a Ninjutsu deck with Yuriko as the commander. The deck I was able to put together online was about $120 and didn't seem to strong but after reading comments online, it seems like people may not like going against that commander.
The other ones I was going to do is get the 4 Warhammer 40K decks for $170 and those seem less powerful and I really like a few of the themes.
Is Yuriko really that strong and people will auto target me or is that just if the deck is super upgraded and fine tuned?
Hoping to get some outside opinions to help me make my decision. Thank you!

My friend hasnt been able to play onlile for some reason, he keeps getting an error message that goes like "You dont have access to xbox live or permission to use xbox live functionally", were both xbox series x users, hes got an active gamepass ultimate sub and ive got an active gamepass core sub, online forums are of no help

(Warning: really long computer nerd rant ahead) Mar7aba.
I'm starting university really soon inshallah and since I'm gonna be majoring in Computer Science, I've decided to finally replace my Macbook Pro of 7 years and since I've been using and developing on Linux as a hobby on this Macbook for the past 3 years, it's my preferred environment and I've decided I want to continue using it as a main operating system... so that makes my next computer decision very much clear... a Thinkpad, or Elitebook, or any laptops of that sort. Main thing these two share is that they're certified to run Linux therefore compatibility and support from Lenovo and HP is guaranteed, and you can buy them without an OS for a discount, which is what I plan to do, though I've started noticing a pattern in stores like Xcite, Wibi and whatever other online stores....

They barely have AMD Ryzen versions of any business laptop, or even most flagship laptops??

Outside of budget laptops, really random configurations or really high end stuff, there seems to be no (online) store selling AMD versions of various Thinkpads, Elitebooks or even Ryzen versions of popular gaming laptops like the Dell G15 or ROG G14! Does Kuwait prefer Intel that much? are brands not bothering to ship AMD stock? or are retailers simply not bothering for some reason?
My reasoning for wanting Ryzen moving aside AMD's good history with Linux is that they're generally more power efficient compared to the current Intel lineup that is out in Kuwait right now (13th gen Intel), while having decent integrated GPUs for the times where I might require good-enough graphical performance (I really don't need much! just something eqv. to the Steam Deck, which current AMD provides with their iGPUs) , unlike some Thinkpad configurations sold by WiBi which give you a power hungry i7 CPU, alongside a really weak Nvidia dGPU (MX550) that would consume more power, for the same performance as an AMD Radeon iGPU...
I've heard many mention Ibn Khaldoon street, but I haven't had the chance to visit yet so I don't have a clue about what stores might have there, but if anyone frequents there, please tell me if you've seen AMD versions of the Thinkpad E14, L14 or T14, as they're the models I'm most interested in at this moment. (alongside the Elitebook 845, which is the AMD version of the 84x series)
Enough rambling about AMD though, I've also been interested in Intel's latest laptop CPUs, Core Ultra series (Meteor Lake), where they claim (and have) similar or slightly better performance than AMD's CPUs and iGPUs, and all the laptops I'm interested in have Core Ultra variants, and have had them for months, yet even WiBi which regularly stocks Elitebooks and Thinkpads haven't stocked them yet... not even consumer and gaming laptops with these chips have come to Kuwait yet despite being available in the UAE for what seems to be a good couple months now... (and no, I'm not going to book a holiday just to buy a random laptop 😛)
So does anyone in the know about how computer and laptop sales work in Kuwait know why retailers don't stock Ryzen laptops as much as Intel? or why retailers are so painfully slow in releasing new CPU generations to consumers? Worst case scenario I'll end up buying one of the configurations WiBi sells on their website and just deal with the worse battery / performance... but we'll see....

for some reason the game just signed me out of my EA account for no reason. This account I play on is my stepdads old account i’ve been playing on it for nearly 10 years now. Back when my stepdad used to play playstation, he used to play madden and had an EA account but he no longer uses the email to get into it. What do i do? this has never happened to me ever since i first started buying madden (i’ve bought 21-24). I lost all my franchise as i usually so online ones so is there any way for me to get my account back? this pisses me off as in the 3 year of owning madden this has never happened to me.

I know the online servers were shut down a few years ago, but I heard people with jailbroken PS3 can join private servers and play with others.

I’m sure there have been plenty of album rankings discussed before. As a guitar player I can’t help but appreciate songs and albums more based on the guitar work and if the songs are interesting/challenging/fun to play.
Here is my list:

1. Waking The Fallen (My personal favorite album. Songs are challenging and fun to play. Great harmonies, riffs and solos throughout)
   
2. Sounding The Seventh Trumpet (This album consists of mostly simple and fast rhythm guitar riffs and is very fun to play)
   
3. Hail to the King (The riffs on this album are for the most part simpler than City of Evil and a little less challenging to learn and play. The lazy guitar player in me appreciates the simplicity of the riffs and the ability to memorize the music more easily)
   
4. City of Evil (Definitely a challenging album to play. Songs are layered with tons of guitar and playing the entire album from start to finish is a little exhausting. Nevertheless some of the harmonies and solos are unmatched on any other album)
   
5. Nightmare (Kind of a mix between City of Evil and Hail to the King for me. The guitar work is a little less crazy than City of Evil with more simple and fun to play riffs like Hail to the King)
   
6. The Stage (Songs are interesting, challenging and fun to play. Some riffs are super simple and then some leads and solos make me want to put the guitar down and walk away in frustration)
   
7. Avenged Sevenfold (Probably a very unpopular opinion. This is a great album as a whole but guitar-wise the only songs I enjoy playing are Almost Easy, Scream and Afterlife)
   
8. Life Is But a Dream… (Purely from a guitar perspective and my personal opinion I have to rank this album last as compared to the rest of their albums. Beautiful Morning is my favorite song and the only song I have sat down to learn. It’s a simple and fun riff. I haven’t had the interest yet to learn anything else but there’s no doubt there are some insane things on this album like the solo in Nobody)
   

I could probably say a lot more about each album but I tried to keep it somewhat simple. For the most part my opinion on this album ranking is based on the songs I enjoy playing or the guitar work in general even if I’ve never learned the songs on the album.
Whether you’re a musician or not I would love to see how you rank the studio albums and hear your opinions on why.

I just finished the game after around 55 hours of time put in and gotten the perfect ending and all that jazz, and wanted to share some thoughts I had about it.
I am assuming many people were interested in EC because of Suikoden, like I was. Suikoden 2 is perhaps the best game I have every played and i have completed it multiple times over the decades now (even though the first time I played it I thought I failed and got game over from seeing the greyed out credits scene in the beginning because i had never seen a credits scene other than at the end of the game.). And EC being both the spiritual successor of the franchise and even having the creator and director of Suikoden 1 & 2 leading development: Yoshitaka Murayama.
This will be an unfair comparison because I am literally comparing the best game I have ever played S2 with EC, BUT i will try to keep it fair and not be too critical.
ALSO PS: this is just my personal opinions, you have full rights to your own opinions. You may not agree with my opinions and that is perfectly fine.

STORY: 6.5/10
Although the same creator behind the Suikoden 1 and 2 story was leading development of Eiyuden Chronicle, EC unfortunately didn't live up to the grand political and intriguing storylines in the way S1 & S2 did. Although we have some similar elements, it feels the story could have been better polished and written a bit more maturely and bit complex because the EC story is pretty straightforward there's not really much turns and twists and intrigue. The main villain is like a temped collaboration of Luca Blight and Agares. I wish there was more fleshed out version of him, and more of in depth story of the reasons for his actions. The plot moves very straightforward, and at times a bit bland especially in comparison to Suikoden 2. Its still a decent/ok story but it feels a bit watered down.

DUELS: 9/10
One of the favorite things of mine from Suikoden series are the duels, and EC does it damn good. Id even say they do it much better by having multiple "scenes" you can take the duel in. The only downside is that duels are far and few in between. And I wish they would have added more dialog options but other than that they did fantastic upgrade on the duel system in my opinion.

FIGHTS: 5/10
The majority of the gameplay will be fighting enemies and bosses outside of resource gathering so I wanted to review fighting by itself than add everything into a general gameplay category.
Fights are for the most part a bit hollow. The enemies are gorgeously designed but they feel very static and hollow when fighting. I don't know if its a lack of shadowing or something, but the vectors just feel empty for me. The bosses are also very detailed and nice to look at as a static image but feel empty hollow on the battlefield. The boss fights are also a bit boring although there are some early game Boss fights that leads to using environments and such, in total I think there are about 5 or 6 of such gimmick fights where you interact with objects in the environment, it was kind of cool for the first round or two afterwards you really see it wasn't really effective of essential.

BASE BUILDING: 7/10
Base building in EC is pretty cool, you have basically a map of upgrades you can choose from and you get more options as your base grows. BUT the resources required to grow your base becomes a big hassle at end-game. You will either have to wait in segments of 30 mins so your gathering team can retrieve some materials or you can go to 2 locations to get the materials yourself and wait 5 mins to get 4 of each and having to fight multiple enemies in between the resource gathering points.
The other issue is the cost of customizing your base is very high. You can select what kind of statues, lights, trees and more but the cost to develop those options eat up a lot of resources that can be used to build your base.
Although the base is pretty grand in EC, I still prefer the base of Suikoden 2. The castle in EC is much larger but the S2 base just felt more alive.

VOICE ACTING: 8.5/10
The game has great voice over acting for the most part. BUT i know i will probably be in the minority group here, I feel like Voice Acting didnt really needed to be included. There is a lot of VA as well, but again i feel like the funds and time could have gone to writing a better polished story instead. It would have been better to do it only for major scenes and duels than for almost every dialog. Again the VA was very well done, just if I had to choose one or the other, id remove the VA and focus on the other elements.

WAR GAMES: 5.5/10
There are some elements of the EC war games i like and some i don't like. I like the more detailed individual abilities and ability to somewhat customize your army (you have option to add and remove cavalry archers mages and warriors as premade groups) but I didn't like the battle system itself, the battle grid was very small, there was not any environmental differences, there wasn't any ramifications of losing units either so there was not much pressure to perform. It was again a very simplified version of the S2 war games system.

CHARACTER RECRUITMENT: 5/10
Although i don't necessarily enjoy grinding to recruit characters, there wasn't much difficulty in gaining the 120 character in the game, outside of the damn Baguia battle bots minigame (sheeesh i HATED that minigame). There were maybe a dozen of them that required special conditions rest of the characters either joined by themselves or just needed to be interacted with once. There also wasn't any like special in-depth stories like Victor, Star Dragon Sword and Neclord, or Killey side story in S2. There are maybe 2-3 where you need to have another character to get another character but theres no in-depth storyline for the side characters. No one is really missable. You just need to interact with them.

MINI GAMES: 6/10
The mini-games in EC are again a bit of a hit and miss. I hated the battle bots minigame with everything, why would there need to be 3 matches when its best out of 2? Why do you start the ability to play the game so early but dont give the actual good spin bots until late game so you actually have a shot at winning. It was horrible and you had to fight a certain number of npcs before you could challenge the main people, and all that to get 1 character who is also not that good at anything.
Cooking was ok-ish because although it was very similar to Suikoden games, its mechanics are just messed up. Its just badly optimized scoring and the way to find what the judges like are so hit or miss, either the announces just literally says the dish or they say something so vague or nothing at all. But then you get the person who like spicy food something spicy and they vote 1....
The egg racing was useless, like there was nothing to be gained from it.
The favorite minigame for me was the card game. It became a bit challenging to defeat the S ranks, but it was a fun game with a interesting game mechanics.

OVERALL SCORE: 7/10
Its a good/decent JRPG, but its still lacking the polish and finish that could have made it a great game. Again it is very unfair because i am comparing it to Suikoden 2. But I hope they continue and try to develop EC2, and work on a more mature storyline and fix those stated issues. The game was entertaining, it had some amazing moments like the first duel in the game. It just ended up fizzling out and becoming a bit stale as you went along instead of being a really intruiging storyline like Suikoden 2.
If you like JRPGs its a good game to play. If you think its gonna hold up to S1 or S2, then i would say lower your expectations and just enjoy it for what it is.

I am losing my mind.
I have been searching online for days with nothing to show for it.
When i try looking for help It's a bunch of b.s for PC or some other console. Google doesn't seem to understand what a Wii is.
I need to find family and I have the map to the first sister west of Lorient. There is a pirate harbor there "Traitreville".
I can see the marker and i've tried using the telescope but I can't even direct the telescope it just moves in the wrong direction and refuses to face toward shore. Not to mention everything says to look for a small blue building but all i see is the blue buildings of towns
I am losing my mind and everyone just says to do some b.s that only works on a different console. I really like the game so far but if I can't even do the main story what is the point?
I have traveled around the entire island and nothing. The pirate town doesn't have anything nor does Lorient or San Domingo.
I don't know what to do at this point and i'm beyond frustrated.
if anyone has played the WII VERSION and knows how to do this please help. There is no help online or in the game itself so i'm lost

Well, I thought I would finally try this out there. Dating apps suck, and a lot of times I feel like it doesn’t feel real or legit. I’m 22 and I live in PA. I moved here by myself almost a year ago now. I’ve been single for around two years now, and I haven’t really been in any long term relationship. 4 months is the record, haha.
I’m only looking for guys that live in America. I don’t have a passport and don’t plan on getting one.
I am 5’10, a bottom for position purposes, and I am a twink in heart but I got some curves. Don’t worry, the personality makes up for any lack of attractiveness.
I like to play League of Legends and would love to meet a guy who plays that too, I think it’d be fun to play it together. But if League isn’t your thing, im down to learn other games or just get to talk to one another.
I am an aspiring author, and so I like to really talk about my creativity and everything that my brain thinks of to create. I have different novels in the works, and if you’re interested, I’d love to talk about them.
I don’t really do much outside of work. I enjoy baking, cooking, and sometimes spending time with friends IRL. I’m a bit introverted IRL, but I am an extrovert online.
So, I don’t really know what else to put. Id love to find something genuine. In terms of preference, I’d prefer a guy taller than me or same height, someone who enjoys texting and calling and maybe would meet up one day, and in America. Oh, and please be within 19-28. I dont want to date too much older or younger than myself, and I hope that’s understandable, haha.

I (31F) got in touch with my childhood friend (32F) who we will call Sara. I reached out to Sara who I didn’t have much contact with since we were teenagers so about 15 years. Things started out good, we had that same connection, that one when you haven’t talked in forever but it feels like it’s was only yesterday. From my memory now, things started coming to light when I was on vacation, I was having a hard time at the moment (was assaulted a few weeks before) I was texting her about it and she ended up calling me. While we were talking She told me she took happy mushrooms, was drinking and was getting stoned while her kids were in school. She admitted that her and her boyfriend at the time would get messed up daily and normally while the kids were at school. My mind goes right to “you’re going to pick your kids up from school while tripping on drugs?” I didn’t talk to her for a few weeks and one night I get a call. Hell completely broke loose, she’s screaming and crying that “he’s going to drive his motorcycle into the house!” “He says he’s going to k*** me!” He drove off then she was panicking that he’s drinking and driving. Her mood completely flips, she is completely calm and asks for me to call the cops and turn him in. I’m like “I can’t do that I don’t know where you live or anything about him.” (We live across the country from each other). He ended up coming back, the screaming and crying started, “he’s trying to break into the house and k*** me.” Yes the kids were around for the whole thing. He got in the house and was calm. Sara and the kids were teaming up on him telling him he couldn’t be in the same room as them completely trying to bully this guy. (She rewards her kids for joining in on fights and defending her in this situation and others I’ve heard) keep in mind these kids are all under the age of 10. After almost two hours of chaos I got off the phone it was a what just happened moment. Around the situation she got arrested for assault on the motorcycle guy. Well from then on it continued, for some reason Sara would call me when things were crazy. What really got me to answer was that she would call me and threaten suicide which now that I look at it, I think she was using suicide against me. When we were teens she tried k****ing herself by cutting every part of her body and I found her bleeding out, it’s something that was really traumatic and stuck with me so I know she’s capable of it. On multiple occasions she would call ballin her eyes out saying “I’m going to k*** myself.” I would spend hours trying to talk her out of it, then she would get off the phone and ghost me. Over and over she would worry me and blow me off, I didn’t know if she really did or not. Every time that phone rang I was worried and it was always something chaotic. A few times that stood out to me with her threatening suicide was her saying it in front of her kids and them panicking. Also her going from screaming and crying, then calmly saying “you’re not going to turn me in are you?” At some point she asked if she did if I would take the kids. Motorcycle guy was also suicidal and trying to kill himself with alcohol and whatever he could get his hands on because it was to much taking care of a family (this wasn’t the kids father) and he wanted her to get out. At one point she said she thinks he was doing bad things to one of the kids, she was asking me how to tell or what to do. I said “if you think your kid is getting hurt you need to take them to the hospital and get them examined.” She instead wanted me to stay on the phone while she asked them questions and examined them, but what really bothered me is Sara wanted to send me a picture of them for me to give my option. “Please do not send me a picture take them to the hospital.” I didn’t hear a word about it again, I don’t think the kid was taken in and it might have been made up after seeing patterns of her trying to make people out to be villains. Sara frequently called me for my opinion or to look stuff up only to never do it or do the opposite. Well back to the living situation, her and motorcycle guy weren’t able to pay their bills and got evicted out of their place and went their separate ways, during this time and before she was relying on me to try figuring out where she could go (I think she was wanting me to pay her way). I would suggest things, and of course, none of these things were liked by her. She finally had no choose, me, her family members, and probably more people sent her money to get her and the kids on a plane. After she arrived to family she ghosted me, only a couple times when something was bad I heard from her. She told me she was taking pills but wasn’t allowed to drink. Well things blew up and this is what I got from getting called in a panic (get me out of here). It was one of the kids birthdays and the family set up a birthday party at a park, instead of Sara taking the kid to their birthday party, she decided to go day drinking with friends and have them drive drunk with the kids in the car. (Sara has also hitchhiked intoxicated with the kids and frequently lets drunk drivers drive her kids) well the family was mad so Sara got defensive, turned other family members against each other and caused a fight. The whole thing caused her mom to come save her from the horrible people (sarcasm). After not being able to help Sara, I got ghosted again, fast forward a couple months, things once again went down hill. Sara exhausted of her toxic mother, went to live in a drug central hotel with some guy. Over the year, Sara has been known to meet guys online and get rides from them (she doesn’t drive) or stay with them etc. Well Sara took the kids out of school for 3 to 4 months and would party daily. Eventually She decided the guy was to controlling because she would leave in the middle of the night and he would be trying to figure out if he needed to lock up or not, she would ignore him and that irritated him. So she decided to make a fight between the mother and the “controlling” guy. Well Sara ends up at the mother’s house, she goes back to going out at night partying meeting people. There’s a lot, so much more I just can’t go over every detail there’s to much and I’m sorry if I’m jumping around. Well Sara tells me her mother is apparently threatening to k*** Sara if she does anything she doesn’t like, everything is completely dysfunctional. I hear a few times that the Mothers is telling her to get out, that she can’t afford everyone, and the only reason she is there is because of the kids. Keep in mind Sara has not worked once since I’ve started talking to her but instead wants to party and drink during the day while the kids are at school. Things get bad so Sara calls the cops on the mother which gets the mother arrested. Sara bags cops to send cps for help, she finds a place to go but instead takes over the mother’s house (the mother isn’t allowed to be around the kids so is now homeless). She has the school already threatening to call cps, she is getting cops involved saying the school is being neglectful (that’s a whole different story). So she has cps calls coming from all different directions. One of the last times I talked to Sara was when she found out she had an std and about a week later wanted to send me pictures of what she thought was a miscarriage. I’ve been exhausted and started trying to protecting myself so I didn’t give her the response she wanted and said I’m really sorry that happened. I of course get ghosted just left on read and I didn’t get a text or call for about three weeks. I really didn’t want to see a picture of a miscarriage for one and two I have caught her lying in the past, yes I believe she would get pictures off the internet saying she had miscarriage. I have thought of trying to call things in before but I had no idea where she would be I think this was intentional. To back up a little bit I have noticed that besides improving or trying to do better for her kids, she would try talking and “proving” she was a good mom. She would say “you wouldn’t think I would ever put my kids in danger.” I noticed with cps as well it was more of a cover up than change (playing the victim). She told me they took a drug test by taking hair, she said they will think she’s a druggy because she’s been around people doing drugs and that the drugs will come up even tho she didn’t do them… also said that she has done drugs occasionally. When I asked if alcohol would come up she became extremely defensive. This has been a pattern through the year, if I say anything she doesn’t like she would get extremely defensive or stop talking to me for a while. With all the victim playing, getting defensive, and trying to manipulate CPS and everyone around, I knew she had no intentions of getting her kids out of these dysfunctional situations unless she was made to. So I decided to make that phone call and add to the case. They went straight to her and read her the report. Either they twisted some of my words or she did. Seemed like she wanted me to become defensive. Of course she made me out to be a terrible person like she has with so many other people. She told me that I betrayed her, was supposed to be her friend and that she should have never trusted me. I told her she doesn’t care about me or her kids if she’s always going to be pulling us into chaotic situations like she has. That I want everyone to be safe, and I wanted to help the kids it wasn’t with ill intent. She didn’t like that and made me out to be the a hole. Of course I feel terrible, a part of me wishes I would have just slowly backed away, the other is proud I did something. Some of the last things she said is how does her kids attendance affect me and how does any thing involving her kids affect me, well it sure does affect them. (I didn’t even report attendance) But do you agree with her? Am I the a hole she says I am? Oh, by the way, Sara admits that she loves chaos, she gets bored without it. I feel like she was straight up messing with me for fun while I just tried being there for her and the kids. What if she does really k***herself or gets in the car with a k****er especially with kids around that is terrifying. Those kids don’t deserve to feel like home is supposed to be dysfunctional. She’s also bi polar and not on medication, forgot to mention. So am I the A hole?

Has anyone successfully finished the Power Rush challenge at Thornmarsh using mouse and keyboard?
I played a bunch of times on PS5, and while the melee pits are something I could do without, they were doable, with Thornmarsh being the only tricky one for me.
But Power Rush seems impossible with MKB, just utter garbage.
Most of the time, Aloy falls down at the end of the initial Power Attack, whether or not I’m holding the left mouse button to prepare a halfmoon slash (I’ve tried it both ways multiple times), which makes chaining it into a Nora Warrior impossible.
Even when she doesn’t fall down, I always get Wrong Input on the final strong attack. (And yes, I am chaining the halfmoon into the Nora, though I’ve also tried doing an extra weak attack in there just in case that’s what’s broken.)

I was midway between my chicken chip breakfast and my chicken chip mid-morning snack when Alex called me.
He was wearing a purple tie with little pinstripes on it – it’s hard to explain exactly why, but it was a very smug tie. The sort of tie a parking warden would wear as they write you a ticket for being one minute and 20 seconds over parked – that is... if parking wardens wore ties.

I shook my head, ‘I’ve had a lot of other things on my mind. Just writing the damn things is hard enough.’

I snorted, ‘If that’s the case, I must’ve done some messed up shit in another life to end up dealing with you.’
He sighed and some of his smugness disappeared, ‘Just check your reads.’

But even the chip couldn’t dampen his enthusiasm, ‘Mr Hill. You’re leaving the dorms. It’s time for you to go to the village.’
His hands were outstretched like a runner who’s just crossed the finish line. I made him wait in that position as I chewed on the remnants of my chip. Then I brushed the salt off my hands and yawned, ‘Nah. I think I’m just gonna stay here.’
Alex’s eyes widened, ‘Stay there?!? Man you don’t know how many authors have begged me – begged me to let them go to the village – and you just wanna stay in your grimy little dorm.’
I picked up another chip as Alex shook his head, ‘Mr Hill. Can you please refrain from eating while I’m developing you.’
‘Developing me? The only thing I’m developing from you is haemorrhoids.’
He waved his hand, ‘I’m not here to swap insults with you Mr Hill...’
‘...only because you know I’m gonna leave you crying…’
‘...I want you to go to the village. Mr Hill.’ he squeezed the bridge of his nose, ‘I don’t care about your feelings, your health, or what’s left of your sanity – we both know that. What I do care about is your writing, because that’s how you make me money. You going to the village will level up your writing career. I would not be saying this if it wasn’t true.’
‘Why don’t you just force me to leave, like you did with these dorms?’
‘Because whether I like it or not you’re more powerful now. You have people higher up watching you. I can’t just do shi- I mean things to you against your will anymore.’ he straightened his tie, ‘Remember how much you didn’t want to be in these dorms? Now you don’t want to leave.’
He stared into my eyes across the screen, ‘It’s time for you to reach the next level. You’ve earnt it.’
Our call went silent. He leaned back in his chair, waiting for me to make my move. I just shook my head, ‘That’s probably the nicest thing you’ve ever said about me.’
‘Don’t get used to it. You’ve just racked up a lot of reads this month... you’ll piss me off again soon enough.’

The call ended and I slumped back in my chair. I stared at the blank screen for a while, then slowly I turned my head.
Hera, Astra, and Victor were staring at me, mouths open.
‘What?’ I frowned.
‘Was that the gestapo?’ asked Hera.
‘Yeah. Alex wanted me to go to the village. I told him to stick it-’
‘-the village!’ Astra rushed over and hugged me, ‘Oh my god. That’s amazing.’
I frowned, went to speak, but Victor chimed in.
‘You managed that really quickly,’ Victor said, tapping at his keyboard much harder than he usually did.
‘It usually takes like years,’ Astra said, she leant back in her chair, ‘But look at you – our little Eli, all grown up.’
I stared at them, ‘Did I miss the admission class for this shithole of a place? I don’t see what’s so great about the village.’
‘It’s where all the successful writers go.’ Astra said, ‘There’s cafes, you can freely move around, meet other writers.’
‘All the pros go there,’ Victor said he picked up a can of soft drink, sculled it back and then crushed it, ‘Even the writer of the chicken story.’
I swallowed, ‘Yeah, well, too bad I told him to shove it up his ass.’
There was silence. The girls had their mouths hanging open, Victor was smiling and frowning at the same time.
Astra grabbed me, ‘Do you have a moment?’
I would’ve replied, but she was already pulling me into my room. She slammed the door and I rubbed my arm where she’d grabbed me.
‘It’s too late Astra, I already told him-’
‘’-no!’ I stared at the tears that were forming in her eyes, ‘Don’t blow this Eli. Don’t throw away this thing the rest of us have been working years for.’
‘I-I’d miss you. I’d miss you all too much. I’m fine just here.’ I bit my cheek, stopping myself from saying more.
She shook her head, wiped at her eyes, ‘Go there Eli. Show them what you can do. Show everyone who’s trapped that there’s a way out.’
I touched the side of her face, opened my mouth to speak, but the words wouldn’t come.
I stared into those greeny-blue eyes and she stared back, this giant happy-sad-angry-frustrated smile on her face.
I knew I couldn’t say what I wanted to say. So I just let my arms slip down to her shoulders and pulled her into a hug.

It took ten tries before Alex answered my call.
‘Mr Hill! It’s not often I get a call back from you.’
I wiped my nose on the elbow of my shirt, ‘It’s not often that you... you...’ I shrugged, ‘Anyway. I want to go to the village.’
He leaned back in his chair, a big cat-like grin settling over his face, ‘Is that so?’ He folded his arms, ‘It’s not going to be easy to regain your spot. They may have filled it already. No one else is foolish enough to pass on the opportunity.’
‘Great.’ I gave a sigh of relief, ‘I guess I’ll stay here then.’
‘Not so fast Mr Hill.’
His meaty hand landed on the mouse, gave two clicks, then he nodded, ‘The guards will pick you up in an hour.’
I stared at him, ‘That’s it?’
He pulled at his tie, ‘No... that’s just the start Mr Hill. I’m going to deduct your increased rent out now, plus a little extra which I’ll use to pay Manuel.’
‘Who the hell is Manuel?’
‘He’ll be your guide to the village, show you around, help you get comfortable.’
‘And I need to pay him because...’
‘Because Mr Hill, I’m worried you’re going to do something stupid. Every time you get a taste of freedom you... how do I put this politely...’
‘...I lose my shit?’
‘Yes. Precisely. Plus, life is very different up there. I want to get you settled in and writing as soon as possible.’ Alex peered at the corner of his computer screen, ‘It’s 1pm now, you better get packing. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.’
I nodded and just as he went to end the call he stopped, ‘Oh, Mr Hill...’
‘Yeah?’
‘Good choice.’

Packing didn’t take long. After I shifted the boxes of my stuff out into the writing area I helped Astra shift her meagre possessions into my room so she could look at the stars each night.
Then we all sat talking until a groaning sound came from the metal door to the outside world. It slid open and two guards – one guy with a moustache and one without sauntered into the room.
‘You,’ said the guy with the moustache as he jabbed a finger at me, ‘You’re Mr Hill?’
I nodded and turned to my three dorm mates, ‘I guess this is it.’
Hera gave me a hug, then punched my shoulder, ‘I would wish you luck, but you’re a psycho like me. You don’t need luck. Just keep showing Crusher that you won’t take shit from them.’
Victor just nodded to me, ‘Take care out there Eli. I’ve heard of authors losing their writing ability to the village. Don’t let it take yours.’
And finally there was Astra. Eyes shining like stars.
‘You take care,’ she said, ‘I’ll see you on the other side.’
The guards grabbed the cardboard boxes that contained my worldly possessions (mostly chicken chips) and I picked up my computer, then waved a final goodbye to my friends.
The metal door opened out onto the dingy, rust coated hallway I’d come through when they’d brought me to the four-dorms.
The two guards’ feet tapped a beat on on the floor as we moved. We reached the end of the hallway, stepped into an elevator and the guard with the large moustache jabbed a finger at the button with the number 4 on it. The elevator gave a pathetic ding that died halfway through. The guard drew his fist back and gave the button a brutal whack. This time the elevator dinged with more enthusiasm and we started to move upward.
The moustached guard caught my eye, ‘You’d think with all the money they spend on you lot they’d at least get us a decent elevator.’
I just looked away.
The elevator opened onto a carpet lined hallway with fresh wallpaper and art hanging from the walls. At the end of the hallway were a pair of double doors.
On the other side of the doors was the brightest light I’ve ever seen. I was blinded as I pushed through and I felt heat on my face. The guards were calling to me but I ignored them and turned away from the light. As my vision recovered I saw green grass, and a tiny fern. They made me laugh. I turned back to the bright light and held the computer box up in front of it. Beyond the light was a blue ceiling with white flecks all through it. It took me a while longer to realise that I was looking at the sky. I lowered the computer box and closed my eyes and the sun’s light – which still seemed really bright – warmed my face.
‘Come on, you’ll have plenty of time for that when we’re gone.’ said the moustached guard, only this time he didn’t sound angry.
I followed the two of them down a row of beautifully manicured cottages. They were wooden with white picket fences – like something from a dream.
‘This one’s yours,’ said moustache man. He was pointing to a weatherboard cottage surrounded by lavender.
I blinked and the guy waved a hand in front of my face.
‘You hear me?’
I pointed at the cottage – it was four times the size of our four-dorm and about 50 times bigger than my first cell.
‘That’s mine?’
The guard grinned, ‘Yeah buddy.’
They walked up to the front door and dumped my boxes of chips and noodles – the boxes seemed tiny compared to the cottage.
‘Do I need a key or anything?’
The guards laughed, ‘No. There’s no crime here. Ever.’ The moustached guy patted my back as he left, ‘Welcome to paradise.’

I walked through the house touching everything – the door frames, the windows, the television, the solid oak writing desk. Then I found the bedroom. It was humongous with a king size bed all made up for me.
I dropped the computer I’d been carrying and ran over to the bed, bouncing up and down a few times before thumping down on my back on the mattress. The sun streamed down on my face and I slowly drifted off into bliss.

So I helped my buddy get a residency in one of Nairobi's swanky nightlife spots. Every Thursday. But this Tuesday he calls me up, says they want him to play a random party crowd that showed up for a Salsa event but ended up sticking around. So he calls me up and couple hours later we're at the venue.
The place is comfortably full, Caribbean vibes.. there's a team handling the music for the event so we allow the guys to complete their set in about an hour before my boy takes over.
I find a less crowded spot upstairs that's got a nice bird's-eye view of the whole joint and I stay perched, just scanning the crowd.. giggling at the two-left-footed muzungu men. I'm not racist but most middle-aged Caucasian men can't dance to save their lives.. but I digress.
Then I see her. Beautiful face, faux loks, I can tell she's lightskin despite the mixed hue emanating from the club's ambient lighting. She's at a group table but doesn't seem like she knows the rest of them at the table. I'm waiting on her man to re-join her because how can this drop-dead gorgeous babe be by herself? And she's half Indian.. is she? Ama it's the music? lol. I'm pressed.
I motion to my patna to check her out. She's pretty, right? No man is bothering her, none has come to talk to her after what seems like 20 minutes. She's on her phone briefly, then puts it down and closes her eyes.. seems like she's bored. What am I waiting for?
Son of Nyakweba, the last Uji bender, tall, dark, handsome and well fed on matoke will seize the opportunity. I descend down the flight of stairs, go round her table and approach her. She's looks better upclose.
I whisper some nothing in her ear and she turns to face me with a smile. I ask if the stool next to hers is taken. Of course it's empty but y'know, it's part of the ruse. Plus by now I can confirm she's by herself. When I ask her why she looks bored she seems surprised then says she's just enjoying her own company. We banter some more and I notice she keeps glancing over at the dance floor.
Teketeke I pick up the cue and take her hand instinctively, asking her to dance with me. She says she's been watching guys come and ask other ladies at her table to dance all night long and overlooking her. One glance at the others at the table and I know why. The other girls are okay but her beauty is intimidating. A younger me would've been scared to approach her too.
We're doing the Mambo now and I'm spinning her like a bottle top :'D we laugh it out and its all good vibes. I need a break after a while and we relocate to the quieter upper deck where I'd first spotted her from.
She sits on my lap and shares her drink 🍸 with me after outrightly refusing me to buy us another round saying she's already tipsy. We talk some more and get up to get down when our favourite songs come on, taking breaks in between.
I kiss her on the cheek at some point when she comes to sit on my lap and she does the same to me. Mambo imechemka.
It's now 1am and she has to go home. I offer to drop her off so that we can spend more time on the way. I almost hit the highway center divider on two occasions when I take my eyes of the road to steal a kiss. Don't try this at home kids. Not my finest hour I know. On the way she throws words like "lovebirds" in conversation to describe the two of us.
We get there and I joke about putting in a good word for her to her mom so that she's not in trouble, to which she responds with "not under these circumstances" because its late and that I "should come at a better time". Mind you I was cracking a joke. She didn't seem to be laughing at that part. So she'd want me to meet her mum, okay!
We exchange contacts and niceties and a few more kisses and then I'm back on the highway feeling like I just discovered large deposits of vibranium in our village. My ancestors must be proud. I thought.
She texts to ask me if I got back safely 4 hours later and we text back and forth briefly then she stops texting.
Silence.
I figure maybe she's asleep.
The following morning, more silence. The day ends, not a single text.
I try calling her today, line busy. Try again with a different number hours later, line busy. All day. All night.
She's not online even though we texted earlier via WhatsApp.
I'm confused. Is she alright? Could she have suddenly lost her phone? Is this a game? It can't be that she curved me can it be? I didn't think for a second that she didn't like my vibe or just me as a person. She was clearly attracted to me. She admitted at the entertainment spot that she had checked me out earlier before we met and she liked what she saw, even hoped I'd come talk to her. So what gives? I'm perplexed.

Making online friends has been a waste of time, if I had been working on myself instead I’d actually attract the friends that I’m looking for instead of having miserable guy friendships where I’m left with stress and sexual trauma. At the risk of sounding arrogant, I consider myself to be at least marginally more intelligent (both academically & socially) than the average person. Therefore, if I ever decided to suddenly risk prison time, risk my reputation, and risk enduring the wrath of modern-day “cancel culture” by scamming people out of their money:

• I certainly wouldn’t do it for such paltry amounts of money. (i.e., anything less than $1,000 per victim.)
• I certainly wouldn’t choose high school & college students as my “target audience” to scam, considering that most people without college degrees have abysmally low annual incomes. Why choose low-income victims when it would be much more profitable to target high-income, high-net-worth individuals earning at least six figures a year? I have knowledge in business consulting, and I promise you that a business owner would be a MUCH more lucrative mark than a low-income college student.
• I wouldn’t choose such a time & energy-draining method of scamming people. Also, communicating back and forth with potential clients is an absurdly long time sink since only less than 10% of all potential clients who reach out to me actually become paying clients of mine. This means that 90% of my time communicating with potential clients ultimately proves to be a colossal waste of my irretrievable time & energy.
