Going into the workforce soon. Need advice about what skills are most valuable to an employer

2024.05.19 06:46 Numerous-Thought9372 Going into the workforce soon. Need advice about what skills are most valuable to an employer

Hello,
I just finished my junior year studying computer engineering. I wasn't able to get an internship this summer, so I plan on doing personal projects to bolster my resume for job applications coming up. I have a couple of different directions I could go with these projects and I want to know what industry experienced people would think is the most valuable. The job I am targeting is Firmware Engineer, but honestly I really like low level programming so I would take any job related to that.
Direction 1 -- Using STM32/ESP32 to learn the serial protocols -- UART, SPI, I2C. Something like an NES emulator with a display screen
Direction 2 -- Using a Raspberry Pi/Beagleboard to learn more about Embedded Linux -- Something like writing drivers for Ethernet or USB.
Direction 3 -- Doing a Udemy course on embedded linux to help with #2.
Anyway, I'm open to suggestions or potential project ideas. I know C/C++ very well from school and last semester completed an Operating Systems class where we had to build a basic linux kernel (scheduling, systemscalls, filesystem, etc). Also have knowlege on FPGA / SystemVerilog from class. I feel like I have a good base, I just need to get more practical experience. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.

2024.05.19 05:47 ywlke287 ThinkPad T14s Gen 3 AMD (G3A) - reflections of a former T430s user after >1 year

Back in late 2022, I was looking to upgrade my 10 year old ThinkPad T430s (which was still performing like a champ) to something a bit more modern with respect to being thin and lightweight while also being durable with good battery life. Given the state of Intel mobile CPUs at the time, the X1 Carbon was sadly out as an option as it only comes with Intel.
Overall, the T14s Gen 3 AMD was a great upgrade from my then-10 year old T430s. Now that I've had it for about 1.5 years, I figure I'd share my longer-term impressions of the laptop. Hope folks find the details below helpful, even though it's not late-breaking.
Configuration: CTO with Ryzen 7 6850U, 32 GB RAM, 400 nit low power screen, self-upgrade to Samsung 980 PRO 1 TB SSD
Likes:
  1. Similar in portability/weight to the top-of-the-line X1 Carbon but with AMD CPU.
  2. The touchpad is very smooth and pleasant to use, unlike on my prior ThinkPads. (I would love to have the Fn-F12 key toggle the touchpad on and off as an option since my hands run warm and tend to activate it while typing.)
  3. The 400 nit screen is beautiful.
  4. The laptop is cool and quiet; the fan almost never runs with browsing or office tasks while on battery.
  5. I can get 8-12 hours of battery depending on what I'm running; I have yet to run out of battery between charges.
  6. The integrated graphics card is more than sufficient for light gaming.
  7. On top of that, it came certified to run Ubuntu Linux 20.04 (with the OEM kernel variant), which runs quite smoothly.
Stuck in standby problem - workaround identified:
This was the single biggest annoyance I experienced. Routinely, every 0.5 days to a week, the laptop would fail to wake up from standby after being in it for at least an hour or so. The power light would just continue to pulse, and I would have to hard power off and on. Despite upgrading to Lenovo premier support, getting a system board replacement, as well as several more calls to premier support, I was never able to get the problem fixed, until u/sbundlab's post on this sub: https://www.reddit.com/thinkpad/comments/18fagpc/fix\_thinkpad\_p16s\_gen\_1\_amdt16\_amdp14s\_gen\_3/. Rolling back the Qualcomm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi drivers to 1.x did the trick and I haven't had another instance of stuck-in-standby since.
Keyboard:
The keyboard isn't what it used to be (compared to a T430s or similar era) but the tradeoffs all seem to be related to making a thinner laptop, which is what I wanted anyways. The biggest thing I had to get used to with the keyboard was that the keys bottom out below the frame/tray, so if I hit a key too close to its edge, my finger will run into the frame. I actually think this is more of a problem for me than the decreased key travel itself. The most obvious time this happens is when I press Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up Task Manager. I'm used to pressing Ctrl-Shift together with the thumb but when I do that now, the frame hits the middle of my thumb and I might not fully depress both keys so easily. The curvature of each key top is also less than what I prefer, but still better than flat. The arrow keys are sadly flat and I am noticeably less accurate with them as a result to either concave or convex keys. But otherwise the keyboard is fine to type on.
Quirks:
  1. For some reason the laptop boots very slowly when I have a lot of USB devices attached; it's as if the BIOS is taking a long time to enumerate all of the devices. My workaround is just to be more patient, or to unplug USB until Windows starts to boot.
  2. I would prefer to have kept volume keys separate from F keys since I actually use my F keys routinely.
  3. I would prefer to have orange or green keyboard LEDs instead of white, since white is a little harsher in the dark.
  4. I prefer the old power status indicators on the lid; the pulsing red dot while in standby is sleek, but it means I have to stare at the laptop for a good 3 seconds to figure out if it's in standby versus straight on or off.
Other quibbles:
  1. When using the laptop on my lap, the bottom of the screen hits my leg. This is because the hinge now swings the screen behind the base rather than keeping it entirely above the base like it did with older models.
  2. It takes two hands to open the laptop lid, which is due to increased friction keeping the laptop closed now that latches aren't used any more.
  3. The lower edge of the base now has a hard corner transition rather than a taper, since the laptop is too thin to taper. It doesn't bother me when typing but I notice it when I do a one-handed carry with the laptop open.
  4. I worry a little about the durability of the USB-C connection which is required for charging. But at least both ports can charge.

2024.05.19 05:42 FroDude258 Any major reasons I should consider swapping from Nixos to a rolling distro with some sort of snapshot tool?

Used some Centos at work, which lead to me swapping from Windows to Debian Stable for a couple years.
I went with debian due to hearing it "just works" and it seemingly be more of a made by people for people distro at a glance.
Avoided messing with much of anything and when I actually ran into issues I either used the Debian wiki or asked the Debian community for help. I use the commandline a bit but I would not say I understand the deep innards of linux at all, and never experimented.
Eventually after a weird nvidia driver update borked my system due to my own incompetence I decided to look into something else with newer packages if I was gonna manage to accidentally break debian's stability anyway.
At that time I discovered nixos. It seems perfect for an idiot like me.
Declarative package management helps with me never remembering what I installed or how I configured a file. And I have been experimenting more than I have with my system in years since if/when I break something I can revert back. Either by pulling an old version of my config for simple stuff, or from the list of old builds when booting.
I have a few issues though that make me wonder if I would be better off with a more conventional distro.
So I just wanted to know if I could get anywhere close to the ability to easily "revert" mistakes with something like Arch with a system snapshot tool. I just don't want to be completely out of using my one machine if I can't quickly figure out where/what broke.

2024.05.19 05:17 urshei Parrot OS and TP-Link Drtivers

Hi everyone! I could not sleep these days because of this problem that has been happening to me in Linux security distributions (for ex: kali, parrot os) for some years, but still nowadays I could not find the solution.
The problem is that I installed Parrot OS in dual boot with Windows 11 (I also tried dual booting with W10 but is the same thing, clearly because the problem occurs in Linux). So, after installing it, everything goes OK, I can apt update/upgrade as always, etc. etc, etc. But then I try to connect to WI-FI and networks actually appear with their names and everything. But when I introduce my network's password, it keeps loading for some seconds and then a notification saying "Wifi disconnected" or smth like that appears. I tried a lot of things like installing the drivers of my USB WIFI (Archer T3U), but I couldn't do the "make" command in the github folder cloned because an error occurs. Can you please help me? I'm tired of this. One time wifi actually worked but there was an error at 80& of the installation of Parrot OS. That was the only time that I saw it actually "working".

2024.05.19 04:38 Lamented_Llama Idle Curiosity: Possible to get Bluetooth through Broadcom 4312 or 4365 chipsets?

I've got some old Dell laptops laying around, (Inspiron 1420, 1520, c. 2008, and 3520 c. 2015) and I am wondering if it's possible to get the Bluetooth functionality running with the wireless modules they come with. I can get the WiFi working just fine when I use the drivers from Driver Manager, but Bluetooth doesn't seem to work. I know that the modules have this and it worked back when I had Windows but with Linux I have no luck. I've searched around but no one other than me seems to want to be able to do this lol. Any ideas or will I just have to use a BT dongle for now?

2024.05.19 04:06 happycrabeatsthefish How I unbricked my 6t on Android 14. [solved]

The context of this post is you flashed away your recovery and your system partitions. You're on Linux, like me, or you're on a version of Windows that has the drivers already installed. TWRP is currently not compatible with new firmware or anything beyond android 10 (please correct me if I'm wrong). Given that TWRP is out of date and hasn't been updated since 2022, we'll have to use adb and fastboot only. (If there are other tools from oneplus that make this easier please let me know).
Though I did write these, I did use chatgpt to write this with bullet points and fix any typos I had in my original instructions.

Steps to Successfully Install LineageOS on OnePlus 6T (Fajita)

Here is the detailed step-by-step process to install LineageOS on the OnePlus 6T, including all the commands you ran, in the order you did them. I'll also include notes about potential risks of bricking your phone.

Prerequisites

  1. Ensure your phone's bootloader is unlocked.
  2. Download the necessary files from the LineageOS website for OnePlus 6T (example):
    • lineage-21.0-20240514-nightly-fajita-signed.zip
    • boot.img
    • vbmeta.img
    • dtbo.img

Steps

  1. Reboot into Fastboot Mode:
    • Turn off your phone.
    • Hold the Volume Up and Power buttons until the Fastboot screen appears (or get usb debugging and in the terminal type "adb reboot bootloader").
  2. Flash vbmeta Image:
    • This step ensures that the verification of boot and recovery images is disabled, which is essential for custom ROMs.
    • fastboot flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
  3. Flash dtbo Image:
    • Flashing the DTBO image updates the device tree overlays, which is necessary for hardware configuration.
    • fastboot flash dtbo dtbo.img
  4. Flash the Boot Image to All Slots:
    • This installs the LineageOS recovery, replacing any existing recovery or boot image.fastboot flash --slot=all boot boot.img
  5. Reboot into LineageOS Recovery from the fastboot menu or by typing fastboot reboot recovery:
    • After flashing the boot image, reboot into the new recovery mode.
    • fastboot reboot recovery
  6. Sideload the LineageOS ROM:
Don't worry about this error:
serving: 'lineage-21.0-20240514-nightly-fajita-signed.zip' (~47%) adb: failed to read command: Success
Note: The error adb: failed to read command: Success might appear, but if the percentage reaches near 47%, it typically means the process was successful.adb sideload lineage-21.0-20240514-nightly-fajita-signed.zip
Consider this a draft. If I learn more, I'll update this here, unless a mod removes this post for some reason, I'll just post this on another sub or make my own oneplus 6t sub.
edit:
Errors I was getting before. (This will help people who are searching for a solution)
Related, I used adb instead of fastboot for the image because of this error (might not be the exact error. This is reconstructed):
fastboot flash system < waiting for any device > Sending sparse 'system_a' 1/4 (766924 KB) OKAY [ 19.030s] Writing 'system_a' OKAY [ 0.001s] Sending sparse 'system_a' 2/4 (786417 KB) FAILED (remote: 'Error: Last flash failed : Volume Full') fastboot: error: Command failedlineage-21.0-20240514-nightly-fajita-signed.zip
For some unkown reason fastboot was giving me a Volume Full error, which wasn't an issue with adb sideload lineage-21.0-20240514-nightly-fajita-signed.zip
Also, here's what TWRP will give you if you're on any Android after 10:
fastboot boot twrp-3.7.0_9-0-fajita.img Sending 'boot.img' (33116 KB) OKAY [ 1.010s] Booting FAILED (remote: 'Failed to load/authenticate boot image: Load Error') fastboot: error: Command failed
So if you're getting this, you'll have to use the method at the start of this post.

2024.05.19 03:52 SherrifsNear ERROR: module not found: 'amdgpu, radeon'

I am trying to figure out if this is a message I should even care about, but after consulting the Arch wiki a few times I am still not 100% sure.
I recently switched from a Nvidia GPU to an AMD 7900GRE. As far as I can tell, everything is working properly. However, every time I perform a kernel update I get the following error message:
==> ERROR: module not found: 'amdgpu, radeon' ==> Generating module dependencies ==> Creating zstd-compressed initcpio image: '/boot/initramfs-linux.img' ==> WARNING: errors were encountered during the build. The image may not be complete.
Looking at the PCI information, it seems that the AMD driver is being properly used:
lspci -k grep -A 3 -E "(VGA3D)"
/7900 XTX/7900M] (rev ce) Subsystem: Tul Corporation / PowerColor Device 2425 Kernel driver in use: amdgpu Kernel modules: amdgpu
The Arch wiki mentions that if the AMD driver is working properly, the Radeon module isn't needed, but I am just trying to determine if the error message is something to be concerned about or not.
I did notice that I do not have a radeon.conf file anywhere on the system right now (I do still have a nvidia.conf file however).
Thanks in advance.

2024.05.19 03:18 3-Valdion Helldivers 2 freezing seconds after startup.

The game just freezes moments after startup, while I'm still on the ship.
This is a completely French install of Linux, like today old, so I'm still testing stuff. The file system is EXT4 and I am using Linux Mint (Cinnamon) with the Nvidia driver 535 on a 2070 SUPER. I have been testing a few games, and out of DRG, Titanfall and Factorio only Helldivers 2 freezes.
On another note, how do I overclock an Nvidia GPU on Linux? Haven't been able to figure it out and it's especially infuriating because I know exactly which settings are stable with my GPU since I'm moving in from Windows.

2024.05.19 02:22 dingwen07 Trackpad is probably the only thing stopping me from daily driving Asahi

There may be some work that could be done to the trackpad driver to make it more usable, currently it has severe ghost touch and lag issues, I think due to the sensitivity parameters of the capacitive panel. Palm rejection failure (not just typing but also when using the trackpad with plam resting on it, macOS can reject this correctly) is also a problem.
Touchpad experience on Linux is generally not considered satisfying compared to Windows and osx (for example, if accidentally pressed when doing two-finger scrolling, the pointer just flies), but I hope Asahi can at least match up with other PC laptop running Linux.
P.S. Plasma 6's touchpad's multitouch multitasking gesture has become much intuitive compared to previous version

2024.05.19 00:59 Ok-Touch-5025 Is NixOs right for me?

The bad of other distros

My use case

I use my computer for everything. I mean, I develop software, run games, and have an android emulator for some apps, and run some selfhosted services such as jellyfin.
I want a stable setup that is similar to the production server, as the software I develop mostly things that I use myself and then deploy to the web for people using it

Debian/Ubuntu

This is a stable until you need the latest software and you start adding too many external repositories, or the other setup it is using other package managers or formats such as flatpak, snaps, appimages etc..

Arch

The software is always up to date, with the AUR having a large software repo, I could use one single package manager for getting most of the software I need, the problem started when it started to break dependecies with my own projects.
Also is not fun when your system breaks due to running an update, and this has happened sometimes with arch with driver, python packages ...
Another problem that affects both distros is the following: I used the archinstall script, and I didn't notice that by default it creates a root partition of only 20GB, most the space was used by packages, but I couldn't figure out which packages were needed for my setup; uninstalling one would break the dependency of another, making me have to reinstall without knowing which packaged I needed for which projects, which packages could I safely delete etc...) or resize the partition

The good about Nixos

I have been using NixOs a week, and configuring my system with nix os made it so that I could easily remove packages that I didn't need, have both unstable and stable versions of software, rollback changes that would break my system
and something that I couldn't do on the others, my system computer doesn't works and she has to use my computer from time to time, with NixOs I could intall different packages for each user, and the 2 desktop enviroments didn't messed up with the config files.

The bad about Nixos

I don't want to nixtify everything, and it seems if I want to keep using nix, will have to.
For me configuration.nix it is enough, but when I do things I consider normal in other distros they are not on nix os. In a lot of forums, Nix solutions are recommended for everything, like flakes. Home manager, which are still experimental features.
  1. Changing the GTK theme using a zsh shell env variable [hyprland wiki](https://wiki.hyprland.org/0.33.0/Nix/Hyprland-on-Home-Manager)
  2. CS50 library I was doing the CS50 course again and I needed to use their (library)[https://cs50.readthedocs.io/libraries/cs50/c/\] which is not package for nix, in a normal distro it is just sudo make install. but on nix I have to look into the docswhich are not great, and write dozen of nix files.
I said well on the distros it is not reproducible, so let's try writing the required nix files to make it work
  1. A broken package I have tried installing (taskell)[https://github.com/smallhadroncollidetaskell\], but even though I allowed broken packages in my config, it wouldn't install
    1. No able to run linux binaries
I said, Well, let's try to run the binary, as nix os is not a FHS complaint. Not able to run them. Making shell files for each project binary that I want to use disrupts my workflow.
So I turn to the community for providing guidance in how to make NixOs work, or Maybe I should use something else?.

2024.05.19 00:53 skyshowers Is Zebra 450 too outdated ?

I have one and just now pulling it out to use again. It's been awhile so not sure if I need other cables other than ac and usb cable. I am using windows 10. I download drivers straight from Zebra. It install and can see printer as Zebra but when I print all I get is error printing.
Does anyone know if I need to use any other cables like the printer or vga plug, I can'r remember if that is needed to get it to work I think Zebra no longer has support for drivers.
Did I miss a step or is Zebra too outdated and I should just look into newer model ? if yes, what model you recommend for basic needs ? i prefer linux but windows or mac is fine if I have too. thanks

2024.05.19 00:12 e1ernalDarkn3ss There is a fundamental issue with linux as a desktop operating system.

I am a fan of fedora and ubuntu and debian and mint and a few other distros. Each has its cons and merits.
I enjoys how ubuntu does the nvidia driver configuration for me but the secureboot issue with my laptop kills it. I enjoy fedora for gnome and it stays as how gnome was meant to be but getting all non-opensource is definitely a hassle. I love debian for the stability but terrible defaults. Mint might be trying to achieve what I am trying to envision.
What I am trying to say is at the state linux desktop is after 10-20 years we will probably be at the same state.
WHY? Because every distro wants to be different. Sometimes on ideology, sometimes just on DE, maybe based on kernel updates.
The variable here is people and the want for options/customization. As in certain section of people want certain things. This is present all across. Some distros are trying to cater to a minority and some to a majority and some inbetween. For instance a distro is optimized for gaming. But the majority of the population that we should be looking to cater to is non-technical.
Again this is just an opinion maybe unpopular.
Why cant this customization part come as an application, why as on OS. There is nothing fundamentally different between distros, just some bins and configs. I would understand when you say and atomic distro is fundamentally different. Again I would understand when there is a commercial corporation behind the development of a distribution. Their objectives is usually the sales/services which is okay. For instance canonical with ubuntu or redhat with fedora.
I belive the end objective should be a plain distro with sane defaults for a non-technical user. There is no harm in picking defaults. You cannot please everyone. All customs anyone wants can always be put over it. If kernel mods is what a user wants we should be developing an easier way to swap between 2 different types of kernels. For example a server oriented kernel or a gaming oriented kernel instead of building 2 differents distros.
I mean all the effort seems a waste. I love the mint kernel manager which could be used for much more.
Again I would understand a systemd and initd, but again the challange should be making them interchangeable as an option.
If you would look as any other OS, they make most of the choices for you and still allow customization. If they dont allow people still come up with hacks and bypass. For example, as a linux user most would agree windows is bloated, then again there are so may ways and softwares to go around that. Let that part be for the technical people. Lets not deprive linux from those who dont understand it.

2024.05.18 23:38 Krusiphix New windows 11 install keeps crashing

I just recently built a new PC and attempted to install Windows 11 but it kept bugging out, I turned off XMP and boom I was able to get past the first initial page of installation, once I finally got to wifi windows 11 didn’t read it only my Ethernet which I can’t use atm so I connected another flash drive with the driver download and used cmd to open file manager and installed the driver and it remedied the situation. I then installed the asus software that regulates the fans and rgb (if I had any) and iUnity for my case. I had no issues at all after that. I decided to turn on XMP again and downloaded steam, now it keeps crashing with different errors. Like using the task bar and it completely freezes, or I open up steam and it blue screens. Hell I put my pin in and the moment the desktop loaded it blue screened.
I didn’t install a third party windows without bloat nor did I set it to English (world) in an attempt to prevent bloat I just did a standard download.
Is anyone else having these issues?
Any advice will be helpful
If it helps I’m using a asus prime z790-p Wi-Fi motherboard, a core i9 13900 k, 4 sticks of Kingston ram equaling to 128 gigabytes 6000mhz, a wd_black m.2 has my is on it, I’m going to be installing a 4080 soon but as of rn it’s just integrated graphics.
For troubleshooting I launched a Linux live usb and it ran no issues with XMP off and with it on there was a bit of a stutter when booting. And as for the codes when it blue screens they’re way to fast for me to catch, whenever it does blue screen it auto resets the computer in a second or two, just enough to notice it bluescreened.
Update, turning off XMP stopped the crashes, I tested it with the three things that was caused most of the crashes, that was just being on steam, having multiple windows open and opening anything as admin. About to try XMP at 5600 mhz, intels rated ram speed for the cpu

2024.05.18 22:16 AndrewZabar I have a weird one here. Laptop can use AC power until an OS loads

Hi everyone,
I have this laptop that will utilize AC power with no trouble, until Linux reaches a certain point (I assume drivers get loaded). Then it will only rely on the battery, and the battery is currently drained so it can't stay on. I did not even notice there was any problem until the battery drained. Evidently, entire OS installation worked on battery.
I have tried Debian 12, and MX Linux booted from a flash drive. Debian installed but once I was trying to use it, the battery was down to 2% and it keeps going into sleep. Basically, it can stay on with no problem with just the BIOS loaded, or even during pre-OS like during the install. But once OS loads, it stops utilizing AC.
Very strange as I've never seen this before in all my years. The unit is a sort of generic system, not a major brand. It's technically I guess Jetta/Source Code. The model is SP3100 in case that's going to matter at all.
But what would cause this behavior? I will try loading Hiren's USB and see if it can stay on. Maybe I can narrow down if it's a Linux driver issue, but that would be a first for me.
Hopefully someone has any suggestion. Otherwise I guess the hardware is getting sold for scrap.

2024.05.18 21:35 liptoniceicebaby Only fastboot & recovery mode, but I can't recover files

Short intro: - OnePlus 8 Pro - dropped into water - gets into boot loop and cannot start up anymore - Fastboot & recovery are accessible - ADB cannot see device, fastbook can - I run Debian linux as my daily driver OS
It seems I have to give permission to access via ADB in recovery, but I cannot set this configuration because I cannot boot
Fastboot doesn't help me, I tried TWRP img boot, but device is locked and unlocking makes the data inaccessible
Anyone have any tips how I get out of this conundrum? The data seems not lost, just not accessible.

2024.05.18 21:23 tausiqsamantaray Hey everyone, need a help regarding a headphone.

Hey everyone, need a help regarding a headphone.
So, I am planning to buy Redgear cosmo 7.1 headphone, but before buying I want to confirm following things (I searched everywhere, but couldn't find a good answer).
  1. Is it worth it? I mean, I want a headphone that's long lasting with its mic(important).
  2. Is it supported for Linux? Can I run its driver in linux using wine (most important) if you 100% know about it please help.
3, If the above answers are no, please recommend a good(long lasting headphone, with good build quality and sound quality, like the above, and which is supported on Linux), with price range in between 2k inr.
Thanks, looking for answers, further questions, please reply.
