2024.05.15 16:56 Routine_Exchange3786 Knitting swimwear

I am about to knit my first swimsuit. I’m following the coco panties and coco bra patterns by le pull but using ice yarns swim yarn. I’ve adjusted my needle size and am meeting gauge but this yarn is much stretchier than the cotton yarn she recommended. I’ve looked around but am not finding a lot of tips on knitting swimwear so hoping you all can help.
Are there any rules of thumb around knitting swimwear like should I be holding the yarn double and should I consider sizing down because of the stretchiness? If holding the yarn double, is it still important to adjust needles to meet gauge? Also for those of you that have knit a bathing suit, did you sew a lining inside? Any other tips you have would also be appreciated! Thank you!

2024.05.13 14:52 Adventurous-Echo-159 Fine, greasy hair with dry ends

Hi, I have straight, fine, greasy hair with very dry ends and split ends. My hair is very flat, thin and lacks volume. I wash it and it spends approximately 24hours clean before becoming so greasy it looks like I haven’t washed it in weeks. Over the past few months i have been trying new products and i have considerably reduced heat damage. I double shampoo and scrub well.
I tried the following products: - Coco&Eve hair mask - i use weekly and love - Redken amino-mint shampoo - love how it cleans my hair but my hair still becomes greasy after 1 day clean - Redken Extreme Conditioner - love this, nourishing and smells well. - Pureology Volume Shampoo - not a fan because it feels like it strips my hair but still using it time to time because it was expensive :/ - Bumble&Bumble Sunday Clarifying Shampoo - feels like it really strips my hair and was kinda disappointed but i use it time to time to deeply clean my scalp. - R&Co Television Shampoo - honestly underwhelmed. Reviews raved about this but feels like it strips my scalp. (Also not sure if I’m allergic to it 😩 I’ll find out in a few weeks)
Personally have been loving Redken but as i said i want to tackle my really oily scalp. I had also bought some leave in treatments. Ever since my last trim, i have noticed improvement in split ends but still quite dry.
I wash my hair every 2 days and it’s honestly exhausting. I have been looking into buying a hair oil ideal for tackling straight, fine, flat hair with greasy scalp and dry ends. Mainly looking for a scalp oil to use before shampooing. Any ideas or recommendations are greatly appreciated!
Also sorry for the long post

2024.05.12 00:31 stargirlxoxo Recent AB Lip Product Reviews: Etude, Rom&nd and Peripera

Recent AB Lip Product Reviews: Etude, Rom&nd and Peripera
Etude Ginger Sugar Essential Lip Balm; Rom&nd Glasting Balm in 01 Coco Nude; Peripera Ink Mood Glowy Tint in 01 Best Beige Menu
I've been in a glowy lip phase for months and recently bought these to try out after hearing rave reviews about them. Here are my thoughts:
Etude's Ginger Sugar Lip Balm is a cult favourite among the sub and has sold over 2 million units worldwide, but unfortunately, it was just mid for me. The balm has a super thick and sticky texture that doesn't really glide onto the lips smoothly. I have to swipe the applicator from side-to-side for even coverage, but even then it's not as hydrating or luscious feeling as other lip balms I've tried like the Rohto Mentholatum - Melty Cream Lip Balm (one of my HGs!) or Missha's Superfood Avocado Lip Balm. I find myself constantly rubbing my lips together while wearing this Ginger Sugar Lip Balm because it just feels thin on and like it's sitting on top of my lips. There's also an ingredient in there that I suspect makes my lips peel so I probably won't repurchase again.
Rom&nd Glasting Melting Balm is another really hyped up product that I was apprehensive about because I saw a lot of reviews saying it was sticky, but it's actually really comfortable to wear. The consistency and texture of the balm is actually a bit stiffer than other tinted "melting" balms I've tried. It doesn't melt immediately on application (you need a few swipes to deposit and build up the tint), but once it's on, the balm leaves a lovely, healthy glow to your lips. I have naturally rosy, pigmented lips so the shade Coco Nude isn't as opaque as I would like it, but it's a nice understated nude for when I want to do a dramatic eye look. The citrus-y scent also makes it super pleasant to apply. I'd definitely repurchase more shades after I finish this one.
Peripera Ink Mood Glowy Tint has been subject to much discussion lately because there are rumours about the company discontinuing them? I really hope that's not the case cause this product is wonderful! The tint is wonderfully hydrating upon application, almost like you're applying water to your lips. There's a wonderful translucency to the gloss layer that makes your lips look super juicy and hydrated, but with zero tack, and the tint is quite nice as well. I'd say it lasts a little over 2 1/2 hours on me without drinking or eating. There's a little bit of transfer, but it's not really a problem for me because nothing really lasts a super long time on my weird lips (even with long wearing lip linelipstick). I mainly love how the tint makes my lips look super healthy and plump.
Hope y'all enjoyed these mini reviews! I used to be a high-end girly, but since I've stepped into the K-Beauty world, I don't think I'll ever go back to high-end lip products. The quality and price of K-beauty lip products can't be beat!
By the way, if anyone has recommendations for warm, semi-pigmented nude lip tints/melting balms, please leave them down below! I have way too much coral lipsticks and am trying to switch it up.

2024.05.10 16:05 Whatthefrick1 Calling all the gourmand fiends!

Calling all the gourmand fiends!
Yall, I said I would never buy from Tik Tok shop again…but I kept seeing ads from this one shop called PrtyGrlBeauty. All the reviews talked about how long lasting and potent her perfume oils are. I was suspicious and did my research though. I couldn’t find her scents as stock oils or fragrance oils at all. And one of her videos talking about having a perfumer make her perfumes.
And then on top of that, I ordered 7 bottles and they all have varying colors. So that’s a good sign. She’s also not an indie business, but a small business. Shipping took about 2 weeks, most of the time being her preparing the order. I ordered white mocha, princess peach, juicy mango, warm cream, fruit snacks, milky coconut, and strawberry cake. They all passed the bottle smell test!!
I immediately tried fruit snacks and I fell in love. It has notes of citrus, juicy and sweet fruit, raspberry, citrus candy, and rose. It reminds me of Candy by Prada. I only applied a small amount to the back of my wrist and it was SO strong. The smell kept wafting back up to my nose. Then I went to smoke and I still kept getting whiffs AND it survived my smoke session, still strong (my perfume oils don’t really do that). Then I took a shower and after scrubbing 3 times I swear I still faintly smelled it.
Then I tried milky coconut. This has notes of coconut, vanilla, chamomile, and aloe Vera. It smelled so refreshing and good. I layered it with my coco paradise FFM. It didn’t last all through the night for me but it still had decent projection.
Finally, I’m wearing warm cream. The notes are white, sweet vanilla backed by a heavy and rich amber. This also has some type of citrus smell to it that other people also noticed. It gives it a candy creamy type of smell.
And all these were for such a good price! $8 a piece with 3 for $20 perfume bundles. She also sells body milks and oils that everyone raves about so I’m interested in those now too.

Ballad of badguy : Sir Based the brave
This is the tales of the infamous magic Knight. Once is regarded as one of the most righteous and pure hearted individual who fight for justice and vanquished forces of evil left and right. A noble knight in shining armor beloved and adored by all, true heroic figure.
But now, Sir Based is nothing but a tainted symbol of cruel and uncaring unchecked capitalism where human life and righteousness is worth less than a few gold coins. Where horrid exploitation of fellow men and women is seen as norm. A staunch sigil of Chivalry industrial complex that send countless soldiers and squires to face their doom in the pointless crusade, to be slaughtered and dehumanised on unforgiving dunes of Levantine and other middle Eastern caliphate. Just for the higher entourage and echelon of Knights, military generals and Chaplains to fatten and enriched themselves on the spoils of war paid by blood and tear of their subordinates covered by a facade of holy war.
Many thinks Sir based is a cruel hearted bastard since the beginning but that's not what happened. He only walks down the darker side because of an incident.
An incident that cause Sir based his heart and mind. A story of a blade, a knight and his journey to the great waste.
Many years ago, there's was a great war when a lunatic King from nation faraway has gone coo coo for coco puffs and for some unfathomable reason. Declared war against the world. That tyrant waging the great senseless war against his neighbouring kingdoms and countries, causing untold loss and suffering.
After the alliance is formed and coalition is dead set to dethrone the mad monarch, 18 years of bloodshed and battles. The coalition gain the ground inches by inches against the strange preter natural strength of the tyrant's army that fight with unmatched ferocity. It's like the whole army is infected with rabies or something.
But with the pure determination of the coalition army and overwhelming amount of soldier consisted of nation and fiefdom that has been ravaged by the unhinged monarch's force. They finally break into the grand city, barged into the throne room and have a final showdown with the mad king.
But what they saw is not what they expected at all, they expected morbidly obese manchild that has been pampered all his life and order with ignorance but what they seen is rabid, enraged and really beefed up howling madman that make werewolf look like a chihuahua. His oversized false body builder muscle and shaking body is nothing when compared to his angry face that look like crude caricature of a supervillain.
After the fight with that crazed tyrant, after that mad king single handedly crushed 15 seasoned warriors with super natural brute force but lost to 50 more that swarmed him, one of them is Sir based who successfully disarmed the cruel king from his trusty sword. After the coalition army beheaded him and cremated his body.
They have a bigger problem in hand, they found the source of the evil and strange might of the vile monarch's force. The sword that mad king use is one of the most accursed artifact of doom that give user untold strength at the cost of corruption in their mind and body. The shiny pale grey blade adorned with golden lion shaped hilt and fiery red ruby, the legendary Pride Edge.
This blade though being lost forever find it's way into the hand of King and corrupted him into rabid despot. The Coalition know that this is serious matters since this thing is one of the artifact sought after by many many evil sorcerer, necromancer and other unsavory mages. If they know Pride Edge is here then Coalition going fight 50 lich Kings and evil witches bun rush at this kingdom to take Pride edge for themselves.
Within that night, the Coalition higher council decided that this thing need to be destroyed as fast as possible to prevent future tragedy and to denied any evil wizard from using it to causing more suffering to the world. And since they have ridiculously low imagination, they decided that this blade need to be cast into the pit of molten magma inside the great waste. Probably because these knight watched too much Halfling adventure when they were kids.
The great waste a vast moorland and barren volcanic landscape full of monsters and many horror that called those accursed place a home. They decided that to safest and fastest route to magma pit is located inside the Indigo valley. Probably the only place where you don't need to wading through 200 rabid dragons, incomprehensible eldritch abomination and Vampire army that like to spam mosquito swarm(no one like mosquito anyway).
But the true challenge is deliver the blade, Pride edge is famous for it's corruption ability. It can turned a holy Paladin into raving mad frenzied berserker devoided of reason and attacking anything that breath just by holding it for mere minute.
And there's no time to create a golem to hold the blade, the howling sound from faraway is already a sign that the news already reaches werewolves pack. If werewolf know, the world will know. Those mangy mutt just can't shut the hell up. Any delay of this quest means there's even more chance that the evil sorcerer army will mad dash on their way into this city.
And Sir Based is the most Qualified individual, he has pure heart that can resisted the temptation for long time, he also a magic knight who know how to use protective spell to neutralised the corruption property of this evil sword. The head of coalition order Sir based to journey into Great waste and indigo valley as fast as possible and before the dawn, Sir based is hopped on his trusty steed and breezing to the great Badland.
The Indigo Valley is home of many hostile forces. It's the main den of spider queen Fenza and she lord over several Pigmen clans with iron fist, in the swamp part of the Valley is home of blight Hydra infamous for their acidic glob and also the location of Kobold publishing building where they churning out "Knight bad, Dragon good" magazine every Saturday morning. Luckily Sir based don't have to hassle with them since those Kobolds probably too occupied with their overtime editorial job to care about his quest.
As fast as the wind(because being a magic knight, Sir based empowered his horse with wind magic), Sir based finally reached the border to great waste and he realised that he need Visa to enter.
While Sir based is busy with paper work and entry permit, unbeknownst to him an Arachne who is one of Spider queen Fenza's daughter is watching and she recognised the Pride Edge. That half spider woman quickly mad dash her way back home and gathering the Porcine-archinid army for the accursed blade.
Due some spider politics, if she bring the blade back to her mom. She'll be the crown princess and inherit the cobweb throne after her mother bite the dust. Well you know how much offspring spider made you know what she means, the competition in great waste is rough.
Immediately after getting entry permit, Sir based is riding his horse at mach speed heading to the Indigo valley.
But as he expected, this adventure is not a real adventure without adversary and obstacles. The pigmen clan is coming, the merciless cloven hooves and half squeal half roar sound echoes through the valley. The beast folks closed in from surrounding sallow half dead tall grass and under the windy gloomy weather. Their dark pink skin and ugly snout popped up everywhere ready for battle.
"We demand the cursed blade, Pride Edge. Give it to us and we'll let you go. We can do this easy way or fun way"
Proclaimed the Swine chieftain as he holding his battle axe and wearing ridiculous horned helmet.
Too bad Sir Based is not a coward and fight his way out of the encirclement, he dash out of sticky situation with grace.
But deep down he know he is in big trouble, the Arachne know he's here which means more and more bad piggies will shows up. He cannot afford to get exhausted or else he'll not have enough Mana to sustain his protective charm and the Corruption of the blade will win.
After several hour of charging into the Valley, he see a Volcanic spot that look like small orange puddle. His destination is there.
He also see the hundreds of Pigmen troops awaiting him, with half spider woman barking order at them. She look desperate like someone who didn't study and now in the final test room with emptied head.
Sir based come up with a plan and summon a scarecrow, dress it up like himself and put it on his horse. He use the scarecrow to lure the piggies army away from the Volcanic spot.
It's worked and now tide of Pigmen is now rushing at his horse with scarecrow.
Sir based then crawling through the high grass, using the chaos that unfolded as his distraction and then getting near the magma pit but he stumbled on a trap, a sticky spider web like trap. And a bell ring.
"Ayo, Hey, come back here you stupid pigs. The real tin can clown is here" the spider woman scream and order the confused pigmen under her rule to attack real sir based.
Too bad Sir based is skilled enough to get himself out of the trap and fend off the Arachne while blocking and strinking back at another pigman with sword.
He quickly reach the edge of Volcanic pool, where bright red and orange magma swirling like a lava lamp, where the blade will finally be destroyed. Without wasting any time, The Knight throwing the blasted sword into the volcanic pool as the spider woman scream her heart out, her chance to finally be someone other than total failure in her mother eyes is forever ruined.
The Vile weapon sending a seething smoke out immediately when it's metal touched the magma's extreme heat. The blade rattled violently as it's malevolent magic is being undone. The super natural dark cloud forming above the pit of molten stone and the pale weird moon with a hint of green shining bright on the cursed artifact. Signifies that the evil of the item is being cleanse from the land.
The blade can no longer take a heat and shattered into thousand of metallic pieces before being melted away.
Unfortunately, one of the blade fragment darts out of the magma pool from sheer explosive strength. Nick into Sir based's arm and cause a small wound.
"Mine!!!" The spider woman jumped and dashing to the spot where fragment of evil artifact is landed but sir based quickly grab it and throw it back into the pit of lava. He couldn't risk fragments of this evil item being in the wrong hand.
"Awww, Come on!!! Can't I have anything good happened in my life for freaking once!!!, can't have shit in the great waste apparently." she screamed in pure frustration as she look like she trying to claw her face off. Sir based is ready to fight her and the Swine horde.
"yo boss, can I have an OT payment now? you promised us that if we go to work in Saturday night you'll . . . "
"Nobody get extra payments OK? We failed, we didn't get the sword for my mom so I can't afford to pay anyone extras. Just, just go back to your pen or something, my sisters gonna mock me until the day I died and I need a therapy."
"Dang it, we should go joined Charlotte's force instead of stuck here with you"
"that's your problem I guess, the jig is up. Everyone go home, I'm freaking hate knight but I'm too tired and too sad to care now so, go back to wherever you came from I guess. Now how am I going to pay for my college." as spider woman nagging her way out of the volcanic spot with her pig folks army in sheer disappointment. Let's say that she just pulled off the most pathetic rage quit you'll ever heard in villain story ever.
Sir based is confused with the situation but he glad that he don't have to fight 500 pigmen forces to get out of great waste. His mission is completed so no beef with that nervous wreck of a spider girl.
But as he slowly headed back home on his horse, through gloomy yellowish brown grassland and slightly muddy soil. He feels something awakening inside of him, something that give him a thrilled sensation that he never felt before, it come from a slight gash on his arm that the cursed blade's fragment caused.
This adventure changed the noble knight forever, the evil power seeping into his body and soul. His empathy dried up and his malice grows. Sir based letting out his strange cackle as a bad omen. His wicked smile reaching ears to ears as nefarious plots started to taking over his mind.
5 years later
As Sir based walking through the city narrow, seeking new recruits for the next crusade against the Levantine. He saw 3 late teenagers loitering and chatting about their issue.
A blond boy with tanned skin who is desperate for money, he want to make his mother proud and given his family some comforts.
A brunette girl with pale skin in salt miner overall uniform, she want to go on adventure and proven to the world that her life can be more than slow, sluggish miner in dark and cold cavern. Seeking grand adventure.
A brown skinned boy in tattered clothes, poor and starving. He seeking a bright future that this crumbling cityscape cannot provided to him. He refused to die poor here.
A perfect candidate for Chivalry industrial complex.
"Hello kids, how are you do day"
"Whoa, a knight, wait a minute. Is that Sir Based? Sir based the brave from the legend"
"that's corrected my boy, now the crusade is near and I need some assistance. Would you kids want to join?"
"that's rad, do we gonna be a knight in shining armor? We gonna be glorious fighter? When I'm going back to salt mine I'll finally prove to my dad that I can be more than a miner"
"that's absolutely right young lass, who like salt anyway. Come with me and I'll show you what's life is all about. Soldiery is not limited to men afterall."
"and we'll be there in the light, with bright future, I'll finally be somebody. Pulling my family out of that slum and we'll have a good life."
"it's up to your performance afterall, this is free market economy. All of you have a chance to be a great knight like me. Just that you given it all. I give you a chance to joining my crusade."
"Now kids, what's your name may I asked"
"my name is Jeffrey, that's Susan and the last guy in Benjamin. You can called him just Ben"
"what a lovely bunch of folks, I'm assured you that we'll go to the great crusade, fighting for justice everywhere, where all of you became a true heroes. Into the foreign land that you can see what you will never seen before. You have no ideas what's in store for you kids"
"Jeffrey, you'll have a wholesome life and make your mother proud. With the wealth and comforts for the rest of your life"
"Susan, you'll have a glorious existence. With your name recognised by everyone and beloved by all. You'll stand proudly and walks home to prove your parents you are more than just another human. Life will be fast, fanciful and fun."
"And Ben, you'll have a long fruitful life with sparkling bright future awaits you. A long road for sure but it's worth it. Just given it all OK?"
The dramatic irony is recruiter always lied and they'll get the exact opposite of what they're promised.
As 3 unsuspecting teenagers accepted the offer of their life. They followed the tainted knight into the main street giddy and gleefully for their unbelievable stroke of luck. As local wizard boy see their shadow in the wall.
He only see a shadow of an amputee who lost everything, a weeping snail that can no longer go home and a shadow of boy with no head. A prophecy that will soon become a harsh reality.
"Hi diddle dee dee, a soldier life for me"
The catchy tunes echo through the busy street, like a knight role playing as pied piper leading the street rats to their final fate. To have their dream crushed on the dune of Levantine where war crime and curses awaits them.
The end.

Day 2: Thursday

I woke up at 1 PM, which I took as a sign that I really needed the fucking sleep.
I did also normally wake up at 1 PM when I wasn’t working, so it wasn’t the best sign, but I was gonna interpret it how I fucking liked.
The ghosts weren’t too mad about me oversleeping. I actually think they were sleeping too because when I woke up, they were all flopped about on the ground like sparkling piles of ethereal goop. Only Blair had been up before me.
“I wanna visit Noah,” she said, the moment she saw me.
“Well jeez, Blair, give me a minute to brush my teeth.” God, she’d barely known the kid a few hours. Technically she didn’t know him at all, she was just passingly aware that he existed. But she did feel responsible for his potential death, which was something I knew a lot about, so I humored her. “Give me half an hour to get my body into a form that somewhat resembles alive—” I cringed at my poor choice of words but kept going “—and then we can make our way to the hospital. Sound like a deal?”
“Can we get breakfast first?” Christopher asked, peeling himself from the floor.
“Does that even need to be asked?” I tossed him a grin. “This place is super fancy. I bet their breakfast is swanky as hell.”
“Please, just nothing crazy.” Joni pulled her head out of the couch she’d been curled up in. If I wasn’t much mistaken, her form was looking a bit better. A bit regenerated. They were all looking a little better, like they were reconstructing their bodies a bit. Not coming back to life, but less car crash victim, more minor injury victim. Like they fell down a staircase instead.
“All right. For you Joni, nothing crazy.” But I was excited to see what this place’s breakfast was like. If your average, run of the mill, motel spot had a semi decent free breakfast, this place was going to blow it out of the park.

After the most disappointing breakfast this side of the river, the four of us piled out of the hotel.
“I can’t believe they didn’t have waffles.” Blair looked almost as upset as she had sobbing over Noah’s body. “No waffles.”
I just can’t believe they charged you for fresh fruit,” Christopher said. “Like, where the hell are we supposed to get our nutrients and all?”
“Technically the fruit was free.” Joni’s lips twisted in an angry smirk, something really only she could pull off. “It was a slicing fee.”
“Yeah, you just can’t, like, eat an unsliced pineapple. You should have magicked them, Sammi.” Christopher had been pissy about the pineapple the whole breakfast, as I’d munched on a box of coco crunch, ignoring their grumblings. Yes, I could have lied about it. But I didn’t want to start a whole fuss. I knew any second, someone was gonna realize that I wasn’t actually supposed to be there, find out I wasn’t actually a guest, and think I snuck in. I didn’t want to be mid convoluted-lie-about-pineapple only to have a bunch of people run in and start shouting at me about breaking in.
I just didn’t have the energy. Or I did but I was saving it. Cause I was about to hit up a hospital, and we were doing it better this time.
We were doing it right.

“And if they ask who you are to him?”
“His sister.”
“And if they say that’s not immediate enough family, you are?”
“His older sister, AKA, legal guardian.”
“And if they ask for ID?”
“I already showed it to you.”
Joni nodded as she paced in front of me in the single-use, all-gender restroom in the hospital lobby.
“Okay, one last time, what are you not going to say?”
I took a deep breath. You got this Sammi. “I am not a doctor, nurse, surgeon, or any other medical staff.” The last thing we needed was for someone to ask me to do a medical procedure or ask my opinion. Knowing how easily I panic, I’d probably try to oblige them.
Joni nodded. “Okay. Don’t get involved in any legal muckery either. If someone is like ‘oh yeah, I heard he was in the middle of a drug deal’ or some shit, you just let it happen. We can deal with potentially getting him out of legal shit once we know whether he’s even alive.”
My stomach did a flip flop at the tone of her voice, and I had to remind myself that, all this nonsense aside, there was a very good chance Noah was dead. Kid got a hole punched in his brain after all. I’m no doctor, but I think you need most of that.
I looked to Christopher to steady me. He gave me a steadying nod, and I took a steadying breath.
Okay. Steadied.
I cruised on out of the bathroom, my swanky clothes from the night before in almost pristine condition. I was gonna be the coolest big sister Noah ever had.
“Hi there. I’m wondering where I can find Noah Cellier?” I tossed the hospital receptionist a bright smile.
She smiled back. Off to a good start. “All right dearie, I can look him up. Do you know what department he’s in?”
I chewed my lip for a moment, thinking. ER? OR? Morgue? Could be any, and if I got it wrong, she’d never be able to find him. “Mmm, no.”
“Not a problem.” The older lady began typing spidery fingers on the keyboard. “And when was he admitted?”
My face perked up at this. I knew this one. “Last night,” I said, a confident smile on my face.
She nodded again. “So was this a scheduled visit or an ER admittance.”
“ER I think,” I said, smile not faltering. “He got shot last night.”
Her smile immediately froze into a grimace. “Oh. Oh I’m so sorry. I–well I–yes, okay, please give me a moment.”
My smile was also frozen on my face, no matter how much I wanted to drop it. This was not how big sisters were supposed to react to their brothers being shot. But if I suddenly dropped my smile to a glum, somber expression, that would look weirder, right?
“Right, and are you direct family?” The woman’s lips had, very naturally, gone from cheery smile to alarmed grimace to concerned old granny in a very short period of time, while I still bared my most confident grin at her.
“Yes. I’m his sister.” I could hear Joni hiss ‘just a yes would have worked’ but I tuned her out. Every part of me wanted to say ‘my reaction is totally normal by the way’ just so I didn’t feel so weird, but I was going easy on the lies here. Just the necessary ones.
“All right. He’s in ICU room four. Just a moment.” She tapped a bit more at her computer before handing me a badge and a printed slip. “Just show them this.”
I nodded stiffly.
“Ask her if any of his other family members have shown,” Christopher said, as I started turning away. “That would be a real bummer to run into them while pretending to be his sister.”
Good point. “Did any of his–our–mine, uh, my family stop by yet to visit?” I asked, tripping over my words as elegantly as a waterfall.
The old woman looked back at me. “I don’t have any visitors registered for him. And this would be the first visiting hours he’s here for, so I think you’re the first one.”
Phew. “Okay good to know. Thank you.”
And I walked towards the elevator.
Christopher was celebrating on the way up. “That was sick, Sammi. You really sold it. Or, you didn’t, you looked wigging as fuck, but you didn’t blow it, which is literally just like selling it.”
“Okay, can we actually focus on the good news?” Joni asked.
I fidgeted with my airpods as the elevator loaded and gave the woman next to me a loaded glance. Something that I hoped said ‘oh boy, gotta take a phone call’.
“Yeah?” I asked. “What’s the good news? No one else is there? Cause I didn’t wanna try to sell that one.”
“You’d have to have pulled the whole, like, unfaithful parent thing.” Christopher shook his head. “Which would be an extra hard sell cause you don’t look anything like Noah.”
I had a brief flash of me waltzing into the ICU–5’9” made taller with my chunky boots, pale as the ghosts I chilled with, jet black hair cut in a banged fringe around my round face that everyone swore I pulled off–and trying to convince the parents of a kid with nut brown skin, fluffy brown hair, who barely crossed five feet, that we were related.
The mental image was funny. I could sell it with a few lies for sure, lies that would herald a soap opera’s worth of accusations and drama and probably tear the family apart in the process.
Then again, I might have destroyed the family already by getting their son shot.
Joni’s sigh dripped with exasperation. “ICU. Not morgue. Noah’s alive. We didn’t know that, remember? God.”
We stepped off the elevator and followed signs for ICU until we finally made our way to a very very hospitally looking section of the hospital. Like it was all hospitally looking but this part was like, doctor show levels. Patients hooked up to IVs, tons of tubes coming in and out of people, beeping and all manner of stuff.
Noah was in room four, which was thankfully very easy to find. Inside, we found that Noah did in fact, have a visitor. It just wasn’t one the receptionist would have noticed.
“Blair!” Joni shouted, loud enough for me to jump. “What the fuck are you doing up here?”
Christopher scowled. “Have you just been up here since…” He trailed off. “Shit you really dipped the second we got here, didn’t you?”
Blair smiled serenely. “I wanted to check in on him. You were taking a long time interrogating Sammi in the bathroom so I just hopped up here. Read through his charts. He’s stable but–” She squinted at the chart, as if willing the page to turn. “And that’s all I got. I need your fingers.”
“I don’t really know if we’re gonna like, get super involved in his medical stuff here,” I said. “I mean, he’s alive.” I chanced a glance at the bed. Noah was alive according to the beeping machines, but with his face wrapped up by enough gauze to make a mummy, I couldn’t tell much else about his condition. Not that I’d be able to if he was unwrapped. It was probably for the best that he wasn’t. “That’s what we came here to find out. We can go now, right?”
Blair pouted at this, but my heart was racing a lil uncomfortably in this ICU. Hospitals squicked me out. Too sterile and clean and filled with doctors always treating you like you were after something. At least, in my limited experience that’s how it seemed to play out.
“Look,” I said, teeth grit. “I can’t fix him. I don’t have healing powers. And if I want to get more powers, I need to level up, which means doing schemes, not wringing my hands over the comatose body of a guy I don’t know whose coma-ness is only slightly my fault.”
“Definitely more than slightly,” Joni said. “But she’s got a point otherwise. Noah’s best bet isn’t gonna be us hovering around, feeling bad about him.” She sounded a little flat on empathy here, which I kinda understood. We didn’t know this kid. I wasn’t gonna be able to see through every single person negatively impacted by my godly shenanigans. Blair, underneath her spoiled rave girl persona, was just a big softie.
“Girls are right, Blair.” Christopher tapped his forehead intellectually. “Only way he gets better is if the doctors fix him up or we level Sammi up.”
I scowled at the notion of ‘we level Sammi up.’ But Blair was coming round to the idea, so I didn’t object. Just kinda made a mental note to find a way to throw this back at Christopher if I ever managed to level myself up on my own merit.
“So what now?” Joni asked. “Gotta come up with a new scheme, right?”
Honestly, if you think about it, I was the one leveling them up.
“Well Sammi also kinda needs a real pad to settle down in,” Christopher said. “Like, stoner vibes aside, I don’t really think van life is the life for her.”
Besides, they were my familiars! Not the other way around. They weren’t using me for power, I was using them to pull off my schemes!
“Yeah fair, but that’s not a scheme. Or it is, but a low level thing.” Joni huffed a tendril of hair out of her face. “Self schemes and all.”
Christopher nodded, tapping his chin contemplatively. “Okay, so we work the Cara angle first. See if we can’t bust her out of whatever potential trouble she’s in. Breaking someone out of jail is like a scheme, right?”
“Wait, why do we care more about schemes than finding me a place to live?” I asked, snapping out of my internal grumbling.
“Cause schemes are the only way we can level up, duh?” Joni rolled her eyes. “You owe us, remember?”
“Okay, but like, I don’t have to just level you all up in the first week of being a God!” This was getting a bit out of hand. “Besides, I thought I owed you, like, a trip to the Grand Canyon. Not magical spells.”
Christopher shook his head. “That was before we learned you could give us spells. Now you’re gonna have to fork over both.”
I opened my mouth, all ready to contest the rapidly shifting terms of this whole God thing, when Blair finally stopped her sniffling long enough to fix me with wide, baleful eyes.
“Joni’s right. You do owe us. It’s your fault we’re dead after all.”
After a moment of gawking furiously, I snapped my jaw shut. “All right, fine. We poke the Cara thread, see if she’s in need of any help that’ll trigger a Source quest. If there is, then we chase down that whole fucking rabbit hole until I level up and someone gets more ghost shit. Then we’re finding me a place to live. Everyone okay with that?”
I was rewarded with various levels of smug satisfaction from the ghosts, before I wheeled on my heels and tromped out of the ICU, proverbial steam coming out of my ears.
Maybe I was the familiar after all.
Well, at least Noah's alive! Poor kid definitely rolled a nat 1 by getting accidentally tangled with Sammi. Hopefully Henry pays for his misdeeds. And hopefully more of the ghosts get powers!

2024.04.22 14:22 jstasir Allure OTS :)

Just finished the first leg of Allure. Must say that we had about 98 percent of a wonderful time. We rented a Dune Buggy in Bahamas and did the island on our own. We’ve been here multiple times but driving around and not feeling pressured to when go back was just awesome. We ended up at a beach where folks had set up a market, very entertaining :)
Coco cay was good as always, the only downside was the fact that they took the DJ to hideaway and left us with some crappy ass music.
We did the UDP since it was my parents anniversary, this is where you see the quality of service go down severely.
Gios was great but was it because it was lunch on the first day?
Chops took forever to get our food, the group of ladies behind us were complaining due to it being over cooked and cold. Thankfully our food was hot, our server was a hot mess.
150 central didn’t really leave up to expectations from the first time we went, again our server was just running around looking lost and couldn’t comprehend that my father and I had the same name. Was refusing to run our cards for the drinks because he already did it “once”.
Sambas service was probably the best, only one to rave about. Lourdes was our server and Roland our cutter, you can tell that they were running around. They had our table of 4, a table of 10 and a group of like 25, you could see the sweat in her forehead but overall they were amazing.
Our room attendant asked the first night when to come by, told him evening and he said 5-9. When we got back on Saturday, he came during the day and Sunday too lol. Today he was supposed to take the bag to the other room and had no idea how he was supposed to do that, I just went and carried it over myself.
Overall; we had a great time. I enjoy cruising because it takes me away from the everyday life and just get to relax. While they aren’t always perfect, we always do the best to make it fun.
Round 2 begins :) we shall see later with an update :)

2024.04.16 20:45 Throwawayjwgvaba Confused about orchid bark

I've been wanting to add orchid bark to my tortoises enclousure on top of coco coir to reduce some of the mess, yet every store I go to has pine bark as the main ingredient After googling I found out that pine/fir bark is usually the maine ingredient, pine bark was also the main ingredient in the "reptile substrate" in my local pet shop
So..I'm confused, i've seen people rave about how great orchid bark is..that they always use it..yet I've also read pine bark/fir bark is toxic to tortoises when heated..so..which is it? Am I missing something? Is orchid bark made of different materials in other parts of the world?

Picks Of The Week (by u/lefuniname)

1. Circumference - Time [Neksus Sound]

Recommended if you like: Rillium, YAANO, Xeonz
It's about damn time we talk about the absurdly amazing Bristol-based boyband collective Circumference! Well, I mean, technically, we already did back when we featured Soulvent's Soul Music 2020 compilation and Kit's 2021 debut EP, but, if I'm being honest, that barely covered anything of their wonderful journey so far. So let's take this extra spicy new release of theirs as an opportunity to rectify this mistake and delve a little deeper!
First off, as the intro implied, you should know that Circumference consists of two excellent producer friends, Finlay Freshney-Lee and Kit Jones, but let's take a look at the former first, before we get to the latter.
With parental influences ranging from the likes of Joy Division and Public Image Limited seeing regular airplay at the Freshney-Lee home to his dad also being an absolute menace on the guitar, it makes sense that music would be a big part of Finlay's life, but you probably wouldn't expect him to end up where he is now. While all this meant he was already big on music in general, it was the infamous "2012-2015 era of dubstep and general bass music" that made him a massive fan of all things electronic. So much so, that he even tried his own hand at getting something made, with his very first released tune arriving in 2015, a Techno banger under the alias Dimensions. However, both the genre and the alias didn't survive what I'm just gonna call the Noisia effect™️. After initially discovering the legendary Dutch trio through the more Dubsteppy parts of their multi-faceted discography, Finlay of course eventually also stumbled upon their DnB output, and the rest, as they say, is history.
History we'll talk about further, of course! Over the years, the drums and the basses took more and more hold of him, and in 2017 he unveiled a brand new project to tackle both of those at the same time: Freshney! After kicking off the alias with bootlegs of Dead Limit and Fox Stevenson's Miss You (a proper wombo combo), it was time to put out his first originals, with his debut EP Convolve leading the way on Lost Recordings in 2018. You know what also happened that year? Circumference was officially born! Wait, what? Well, when Finlay started his studies at the college in Exeter in 2017, he befriended this guy called Kit Jones. Similar to Fin, Kit's got a lot of his musicality through his family, with dad’s CD and vinyl collection and the "extremely musical nan" being the main catalyst in his early years, but his start into the electronic world would follow not all too much later, thanks to stumbling upon Daft Punk_’s debut album _Homework in 2010. Production-wise, he was more of a Bassline and even Garage dude, but everything changed when this freshman dude called Finlay came around and showed him this weird fast music.
In 2018, both Finlay and Kit started organising events under the BASS-EXE banner, which is where they actually debuted their collaborative project for the very first time. Their production debut didn't take much longer to arrive either, with their freely downloadable banger GLASS LID on The Skank Bank dropping in 2019 and their first official release, a remix for Ruth Royall's Paper Dragon project, following in 2020. With inspirations ranging from Hildur Guðnadóttir to The Sauce and unusual instruments like the Armenian Duduk being incorporated in their creations, their output really was unlike any other, and quickly found a home on the likes of Soulvent, Flexout and Overview. While this dynamic duo was working out rather well, they still had a whole lot of solo ambitions to share with the world during this time.
On the one hand, Finlay not only remixed Zombie Cats, collaborated with Portuguese maestro Jon Tho on Soulvent and pushed his sound across basically the whole techy scene, with Surveillance, Blackout, NËU, Sinful Maze and Redacted all clamoring for that sweet sweet new patella, he also pursued some experimental vibes with his second alias not.LNEAR. On the other hand, Kit finally started putting out some of his own stuff, starting with freebie Faulty and ending with his aforementioned EP on Surveillance. On the third, joint, hand, the both of them showed how ridiculous their remixing talent can be as Circumference, with respins of Grafix's Stutter and KL!P & LAFA's Remembr. After a bit of a break in 2023, the now Bristol-based bois returned with a bang - their Alter EP on MODUS! As if that wasn't massive enough, they now raise the bar once again, with their debut on a label so uniquely heavy in the sounds that it's pushing that we frankly need to talk about it more often on here: none other than Annix & Simula's imprint Neksus Sound. So let's check it out, shall we?
One might think with a name like Time we're talking about a regular ol' singular single, but it's actually a double-sided one, kicking off with Nowhere! While the hauntingly beautiful vocal on top of a welcoming warmness building itself up further and further might start off melodic enough, the main bassline's heart arrhythmia type wonkiness soon pulls us down into a world of oddness. Straight-up weird yet mesmerising bass movements, already heavy distortion action getting more and more in-your-face, proper snappy drums - entrancing is the right word, I would say. On the flipside, Always smoothly pulls us out of said trance, with its relentlessly repeating, delightfully strange vocal distantly ringing in our heads like a morning alarm you'd like to ignore. As is often the case, however, ignoring doesn't quite work, and as Time goes on, more and more parts of the vocal open up, until we are hit smack-dab in the face, with some properly chopped-up madness. Now that we're fully present, the duo mercilessly throws us back and forth between the eery yet pleasant floating, looping and rolling and the fake-dropped chopping, stabbing, stepping and bass wubbing - simply nuts!
Time and Time again, these two have Always taken us on all sorts of wonderfully weird journeys - Nowhere else did it sound as unique, murky and straight-up banging as on Neksus though!
Other techy murky stuff from this week: - Sleepnet - II - SMG - Critical Presents: Binary Vol. 28 - Farflow - Smoke & Mirrors EP (Part 2) - Dapreme - Gimmie That EP - coil circuit - Control 💎

2. Yue - Set Sail [Pilot]

Recommended if you like: Fox Stevenson, Dossa & Locuzzed
Enough Bri'ish'ism, let's check out some new Dutchie vibes, provided by up-and-comer Yue!
Saying that Fleur Koelman, the Amsterdam-based artist behind this production debut, is "new" does feel kind of wrong though. Okay okay, let's jump back in time to explore what I mean with that cryptic statement. As a kid, back then still living in her hometown Alkmaar, Fleur was already busting out some bombastic basses with her trusty cello and even exploring the songwriting side of things, but when the infamous Skrillex wave™️ hit the world, teenage her knew she had to become a part of the electronic music world as well. At only 14 years of age, which should be around 10 years ago now if my professional internet stalking notes are correct, she already played her first gigs, and not all too long after, her Dubstep-Bass-and-Deephouse DJing stage name HitGirl was born. One by one, she conquered the Dancefloors around the country, sometimes as HitGirl, sometimes going by the name of Miss Molotov, but things were taken to an entirely new level when she started interning at what seems to be the coolest, most loveliest employer ever, Liquicity.
Not only had she become one of the main faces of the brand from 2018 on, the label management also got so enamoured with the digital art projects she had been dabbling in during that time that they recruited her to do more and more artworks and animations for the imprint's releases, to the point that she's now become a huge part of the visual identity on both the main label and its Galacy sister platform nowadays. During these early days, so late 2018, early 2019, she also debuted a brand new stage name: Yue! As someone so involved with Liquicity, it makes sense that she also regularly plays out some bangers at their events, from the family day to the summer festival, but over the years, she's also spun some sick selections at raves organised by the likes of NOX, Moonshine, Beats'N’Bass and Explicit. In the midst of all of this, she also found the time to pursue the production game. Years of slaving away both on her own and under the guidance of her significant other Mr. Stevenson, for whom she's also done some truly amazing artworks and even some backing vocals every now and then, have lead up to this point - her debut release on none other than UKF's Pilot, the aptly-titled Set Sail!
With a delightfully whimsical piano and a satisfyingly synthesised vocal fill, we are instantly transported to a place of sunshine, beaches and just generally a whole lot of summer vibes, before we've even crossed the 10 seconds mark. On this plane of feel-good vibery, we are treated to a vocal performance from Fleur that isn't just absolutely marvellous and elevates the whole atmosphere even further somehow, it's also expertly punctuated with distant background vocals and more and more layering further along the intro. Not just the vocal engineering is on point, however, the pure energy radiating from the drop is just incredible. Rapid-fire futuristic synths, shuffly drums, warmly wompy bass, plus all the fun vocal processing stuff from the intro, all coming together to form one undoubtably fantastic banger.
Positively fleured by this yuegely vibey, koel as hell debut! On a more serious note though, with a debut as great as this, I honestly cannot wait to see what else she's got in store for us in the future.
Other vibey things from this week: - Andromedik - Rise EP - [BORDERS], Puzzle - Grounded - barking continues - free (Remixes) - Niallo - Agnosthesia - Nia Archives - Silence Is Loud LP

2024.04.15 00:41 thedevilsivy Incredibly detailed trip report - Tokyo, Japan Alps, Yaeyama Islands - June/July 2023

For my 2nd visit to Japan in June/July last year, I went with my partner who was seeing Japan for the first time. My goals were to 1) see brand new places and 2) not melt!
Everything I’d recommend to others is bolded below.
Day 1:
We landed at Haneda around 3PM and made it to our hotel, Prince Smart Inn Ebisu, by 5. I still had my old Pasmo card from 2016 and had no problems topping it up and using it to catch the train from the airport. My partner purchased a Pasmo Passport.
After checking in at the hotel, we went to the Montbell store in Ebisu (now a Uniqlo, RIP) to pick up a few things we wanted that were cheaper in Japan. We met up with a friend at Udon Yamacho for dinner. Staying in Ebisu was great; we really liked how central it was to the rest of Tokyo and how many things there were to do in the immediate vicinity.
To fight jet lag we walked to Daikanyama and along the Meguro River after dinner. I think most people visit T-site in daytime, but it actually had a nice, romantic vibe at night. Daikanyama was probably my favorite neighborhood in Tokyo.
Day 2:
My partner visited the Meiji Shrine, Zojoji Temple (they were having an event for Shinzo Abe at the time 🥴), and Tokyo Tower, went shopping at Loopwheeler and Uniqlo in Harajuku, grabbed lunch from 7/11, and got coffee at Onibus and Mameya.
I went to Bricolage for breakfast in Roppongi, visited the Mori Art Museum and Tokyo Sky Deck, checked out 2 stores for souvenirs that were a bust (The Cover Nippon and Nakagawa Masashichi), window shopped at Found Muji and bought incense at Lisn in Aoyama, then went to the Nezu Museum. The exhibit at the time wasn’t the most interesting but the museum building and the garden were beautiful enough to justify the visit.
Met up with my partner for ramen at Jinruiminamenrui in Ebisu (the Tokyo outpost of the #1 Osaka ramen shop on the Hyakumeiten), went shopping for Japanese denim at Dry Bones in Daikanyama, and got Miyazaki mango desserts at Da Cafe.
Day 3:
We got breakfast at Sawamura in Hiroo - their kouign amann was a standout - then went to the Hamarikyu Gardens to walk around in the relative cool of the morning. We saw a stingray in the water there (!) and enjoyed the air conditioned teahouse. We spent the rest of the morning in Ginza window shopping at Beams, Kapital, and Takumi. We had the truffle ramen at Kagari for lunch which was a top meal of the trip and well worth the queue.
In the afternoon we did TeamLab Planets. I’m not a huge fan of manufactured attractions but it was interesting enough, and something to do indoors with AC. The whole place smelled like feet so avoid if you have a strong aversion. Since we were in the vicinity, we visited the Gundam Base afterward and played DDR at the arcade there.
We bought some really gorgeous cookware at the Iga Mono shop in Ebisu, then went out for pork offal skewers at Rukuma Tokyo Shibuya. Grilled pork tongue and barely cooked liver are amazing, turns out.
Day 4:
My partner took the bullet train to Shizuoka for a tea farm tour with Tea Cup Trips. He raved about the tour and a cafe he visited in Shizuoka called Chagama. I don’t drink tea but he found someone to go with from the subreddit Discord whose partner also didn’t drink tea.
I went to Gotokuji (small and boring, a definite skip) and former Marquis Maeda Teahouse (not bad if you’re already in the area). I really wanted to go to the Mingeikan/Japan Folk Crafts Museum nearby, but sadly they were in between exhibitions and closed.
I met up with a friend for kaiseki lunch at Asuka in Shimokitazawa. (We had to run into Donki before eating because it was a traditional place that requires you to remove your shoes and he didn’t have socks!). We checked out some shops afterward, most notably Fog Linen Work. Afterward I toured the Kyu Asakura house in Daikanyama, then went shopping at the Discover Japan Lab store in Shibuya. I highly recommend this place, it has real deal artisanal pottery and glassware among other things.
Met back up with my partner at Matsuya Ginza where there is a soy sauce counter selling varieties from all over Japan in affordable 3-ounce bottles. We bought a bunch to bring back and stocked up on Japanese tinned fish too.
Dinner was the best meal of our trip at Sushi Kuriyakawa in Ebisu. Holy shit. My face hurt from grinning for 2 hours straight. The chefs spoke some English and were very kind and explained every single dish. They also didn’t mind us taking pictures of the nigiri. Sushi omakase in Japan can be really uptight but this wasn’t. Also, I don’t drink and I was a little worried that not ordering any sake or beer would be an issue. Wasn’t a problem here.
Day 5:
Last day in Tokyo! We got sandwiches at Lawson and gesha coffee at Leaves, then went to Akihabara for the morning. My partner got the new Zelda game for cheap at Bic and admired all the vintage games and comics at Mandarake. Also hit up another arcade for more DDR.
We waited in line for an hour for lunch at Tonkatsu Marugo and it was 100% worth it. The pork cutlet and shrimp were out of this world.
To walk it off we went shopping in Nihonbashi at Yagicho Honten, a dashi shop that’s been open for 9 generations, and 85 Hachigo, a fermentation specialist inside of the Coredo department store (they also have an outpost in Osaka). We got supplies there to culture our own soy sauce. If you’re a fermentation nerd, definitely check out both stores.
In the afternoon, we walked around Jiyugaoka which was incredibly cute. Got coffee at the Onibus there which is gorgeous inside, peeked into Yanaka Coffee (you have to like a really dark roast), got desserts at Mont Blanc (mid) and Bake Cheese Tart (fire), and bought knick knacks at Today’s Special.
My partner got heat rash so we ran into Uniqlo for arm sleeves that saved the day.
After the huge fried lunch and the sweets I wasn’t too hungry, so we just got Famichiki before going home lol. My partner did end up stepping out later that night for takoyaki to knock it off his bucket list. (I had gone to Gindako on my last trip and learned I don’t love them.)
Day 6:
Woke up really early to take the Alpico bus to Kamikochi for the next few days.
The bus stopped at a really nice rest stop right on Lake Suwa that had a viewing platform and onsen, plus specialty local snacks.
Once we arrived in Kamikochi we hit the trail immediately to start our multi day hike up to the top of Mt. Yari. We hiked about 4 hours from the bus terminal to Yarisawa Lodge for our first night. You must arrive by 4-5pm at mountain huts in Japan, and it’s strictly lights out by 8! It was an amazing experience to stay there; I think a Japanese mountain hut should be on everybody’s bucket list.
Day 7:
Today was the hardest day. We hiked from Yarisawa Lodge all the way to the top of Mt. Yari. It was extremely rainy and windy, and my legs were shaking with fear during the steep, icy, snow covered crossings near the top. The Yarigatake Sanso hut, just below the summit, was otherworldly, though. We huddled around their kerosene heater reading books all afternoon and tried our best to dry our rain and snow soaked clothes and boots in the drying room. Since it’s so remote, they don’t have showers and you can only plug in your devices for a few designated hours. The food at both huts was shockingly good considering the surroundings. We fell asleep in our bunks to the sound of the wind howling outside and rain pelting the hut.
Day 8:
We had planned to hike from Yarigatake Sanso down to Shinhotaka Onsen, but the storm made the river crossings along that route impassable. The staff at the hut were pretty adamant that we not risk it. We had to go back down the way we came - disappointing, but better safe than sorry. Once we reached Kamikochi we took a bus to our ryokan for the next couple days, Shinhotaka Onsen Yarimikan. The Hirayu Onsen bus stop had a foot bath - I almost cried with relief at that thing.
Yarimikan was incredibly beautiful. They had like half a dozen outdoor baths with stunning views of the alps and a rushing river close enough to dip your toes in.
The meals there were so decadent. We splurged on the Hida beef option since we were in Gifu after all and really recommend that you find a way to try it. Our room was enormous, too.
Day 9:
In the morning the ryokan had an interactive mochi making demonstration which was hilariously corny. Can’t argue with fresh mochi covered in syrup and kinako though.
We spent the whole day at the ryokan just cycling between the different baths. We had udon and tempura for lunch and then another gigantic kaiseki dinner. Every long vacation needs at least one day of total rest, IMO.
We would have liked to ride the Shinhotaka Ropeway but it was closed for maintenance during our trip.
Day 10:
We took the bus to Matsumoto and stored our bags at the station so we could walk around. Got coffee at Alps and Five Eleven, milk bread (sort of like a maritozzo) at Marunaka, and soba that wasn’t memorable (I’m still chasing the high of a yuba soba I had in Nikko last time.) We spent a couple hours shopping for pottery and vintage clothes. Our favorite shops were ChuPa and 陶片木.
I wanted to go to Komatsu Bakery and the *Matsumoto City Museum of Art, but both were closed the day we went. FYI Amex Concierge will help you reserve a milk bread at Komatsu!
We visited the Matsumoto-jo castle grounds then took an early afternoon JR train back to Tokyo. There’s definitely enough in Matsumoto to fill a day trip. I would have liked to visit Takayama as well, but didn’t have enough time.
In Tokyo we met up with our friend for dinner at Ebisu Yokocho. I loved the seafood skewers stall - tuna cheek skewers, grilled mentaiko, and crab croquette were our favorites. The stalls do require you to order a drink, but if you don’t want alcohol, soft drinks count. They also have a cover charge to discourage you from hopping between stalls.
We got ice cream afterward at Japanese Ice Ouca. I still think about their hojicha milkshake! Well-deserved 3.72 on Tabelog.
Day 11:
Flew to Ishigaki. We took only what we needed to Ishigaki and used a luggage transport service to deliver the rest of our bags to a locker at Haneda.
Got lunch at Coco Curry, coffee at Klatch, desserts at Ishigaki Labo bakery, and walked around Euglena Mall. Went to Maesato Beach at sunset (not the most scenic for a walk, but closeby to Ishigaki city) then had dinner at Eiko seafood izakaya. Can’t beat $3.50 for a 15-piece plate of sashimi!
We stayed at Hostel SunTerrace and would recommend it. The location wasn’t amazing but it was inexpensive, really clean, bright, and modern, and we had a private room that was big for Japanese standards. They had cold sanpin cha on tap that I quickly became addicted to.
Day 12:
My partner went scuba diving with Viking Scuba Kabira. The reefs were not in great shape but he saw a shark, turtles, sea snakes, and manta rays.
While he was gone I went to Euglena Mall for local Royce chocolate souvenirs (Ishigaki shio and kokutoh flavors) and got lunch at Yaeyama Soba. I ate an entire box of these amazing Royce spicy cheese cookies by myself!
When my partner got back from diving we drove up to Ishikawa Farm for the BEST Okinawan tropical fruit smoothies, Hirakubozaki lighthouse for amazing views, and Hirano and Hirakubo beach. Ishigaki reminded us a lot of Hawaii. We saw lots of Japanese tourists around with tote bags and stuff from Hawaii so it definitely attracts the same crowd.
We got dinner at the same izakaya since the place we had planned to go was unexpectedly closed.
Day 13:
We picked up breakfast pastries at Seven Bells and spent the morning snorkeling with Viking. Seeing giant manta rays up close was a major bucket list item for me and the reason I chose to come to Ishigaki in the first place. We saw so many!
In the afternoon we drove around the island in our rental car and hit a bunch of stops:
For dinner we went to Sumiyakiniku Ishidaya where we had made a reservation the night before. Ishigaki beef was just as awesome as Hida. This place was “only” a 3.55 on Tabelog so I’m sure you could do even better.
Day 14:
Got breakfast at Seven Bells again, went to the Adventure Pi Pi office to book our Iriomote tour for the next day, then took the ferry to Taketomi. There was a mad rush for bicycle rentals as soon as the ferry alit, so if you go, don’t dawdle! We biked around the island, stopped at all the main beaches, got really good Yaeyama soba and Spam musubi at Takenoko for lunch and then ferried back. Taketomi is an absolutely gorgeous and charming little island. This was my favorite day of the whole trip. I can’t overstate how beautiful the beaches were.
In Ishigaki we went to Funakura no Sato for dinner. Overpriced and mid. That’s what I get for looking at Google Maps and not Tabelog!
Once it was fully dark we went up to Banna Park to stargaze. For seriously good stargazing you need to spend the night on Iriomote, but this was nice enough for something to do close to town. A spooky one-way winding road to get up there at night though.
Day 15:
Day trip to Iriomote. The ferry from Ishigaki was quite expensive - 72 US roundtrip. We met up with our tour at the ferry dock and spent the day hiking and “canyoning” with them. Beware if you are not a fan of high jumps, their canyoning tour is literally just jumping into rivers from increasingly higher rocks.
We got taco rice before getting back on the ferry which was…interesting.
For dinner we went to せんべろ風土 izakaya in Ishigaki and loved it. Everyone was so friendly, probably because it was a senbero lol. Our seatmate even shared dishes with us. I developed a real love for sea grapes while in Ishigaki and everywhere seemed to have them. Mozuku seaweed on the other hand, was not a fan.
We tried getting Beni imo tarts from Okashi Gouten afterward but they were sold out unfortunately. We did pick up some Hi Chew made with shikuwasa (local Okinawan citrus).
Day 16:
Flew back from Ishigaki to HND.
Haneda was absolutely mobbed so I ditched my original plans to venture into Tokyo during my layover. I got udon at Tsurutontan while my partner got Setagaya ramen which was better, cheaper, and had a shorter line. I also went to the Delta Sky Club after security but didn’t get the hype about the food there. Just go to Rokurinsha!

2024.04.10 16:50 Dumbidiot1323 One year in Japan - A boat ride and first experiences in Kyushu (November 2022 - Part 3)

Welcome to another part of my big journey in November. Having just finished the Shimanami Kaido, the next two days were full of physical pain but there was no rest for me because I had a couple more cities to visit in November, the first of which being Matsuyama where I had arrived after my cycle.
As always, the other parts can be found below.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7
Matsuyama
When I woke up, I feared for the days ahead, to be quite honest. My hands hurt from holding onto the bike's handlebars the day prior. My thighs were sore and most of all - my butt cheeks were screaming. Nevertheless, I wanted to make the most out of what little time I had in Matsuyama, so I immediately went to the castle. Great choice considering you can take a lift up...to about halfway there and then have to walk the rest, which was fun with my aching legs! But it was worth it because Matsuyama Castle is one of my favourite ones in Japan. Since it's up on a hill, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the city and surroundings, especially on a sunny and clear day. Inside the castle itself, there is a lot of historical stuff exhibited, katana among many other things. I enjoyed the view for a bit and then made the painful way down the many stairs again.
I was very beat that day and had planned to take the ferry to Hiroshima, so my time was limited. Therefore I wanted to at least check out Dogo Onsen but unfortunately, at that time, there was some construction being done on both buildings so I could only get this one shot. A bit sad about that but oh well. And that was it for Matsuyama already as I made my way to the port and decided to get a ticket for the ferry that takes 3 hours from Matsuyama to Hiroshima. There's also a high-speed option but it was obviously more expensive AND I kind of just wanted to have a longer break, so those 3 hours were a great way to do it.
At the time, there were barely any people on the ferry so I had the deck to myself almost all the time. Honestly, this was a very much needed break. 3 hours may not seem like much in the grand scheme of things but the week leading up to this was somewhat hard. A whole day of hiking through the mountains, then hiking around the hillside of Onomichi, then the 75k cycle - these 3 hours of just doing nothing but enjoying the sea were my reward! These more quiet moments were always stand-outs for me and I always look back fondly on these... it was a very stress-free time in my life.
I don't really have much more to say here. There was a short stop at Kure before we eventually arrived in Hiroshima, where I got onto a tram and ended at my hotel. Dinner on that day was CoCo Ichi, a hot lemon tea from the konbini and some crisps - there was no energy left for me to look for anything that night haha. And with that, the day was done.
Hiroshima
Although I've been to Japan a bunch of times before, I had still never visited Hiroshima at that point so I was excited to finally see the city. Maybe it's just me imagining things but the city just had a very relaxing atmosphere around it. It's a fairly beautiful one as well, especially in Autumn with the different colours of the trees showing. But of course, I had to make the trip to the dome and peace memorial park. Seeing it on pictures and videos is one thing but being there in person is so much different. Actually unbelievable that a nuclear bomb went off here decades ago and you can just walk around here now. The memorial park is very beautiful. On my way to the museum, a group of school children came up to me with their teacher, asking me questions in English and then gave me this as a gift. Neat! Just a few minutes later, two university students also came up to me and asked me - in English - about environmental change. Perhaps I was just looking very approachable! Totally couldn't have been because I was the only foreigner around in that moment!
I of course have no pictures from inside the museum but I very much recommended anyone to visit it. The exhibition is incredible and has some fairly jarring pieces in there. Once I was done with the museum, I walked around Hiroshima castle, there was some flower festival going around which had a miniature of the castle keep in it too. Right next to the castle is Shukkeien Garden, which was my last stop for the day. I've never heard of it and thought it would be smaller than it actually was! Pretty cute and just like every garden in Japan during Autumn, the colours are great and it offers a little bit of calm in a big city (although Hiroshima is pretty chill in general). Now, one thing I always wanted to try was Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki and fortunately, there was a place near my hotel and my god was it good! Having only had Osaka style okonomiyaki before and not finding it all that great, I really enjoyed this much more. The noodles on the bottom really add another layer both literally and figuratively to the dish. With that meal done, the day had come to an end too and I went back to my hotel and went to sleep.
The next day, my plan was to go to Miyajima...but for the first time since arriving in Japan, I had stomach problems. Now, I won't blame the okonomiyaki because months later I'd have it again at the same place with my mother and I didn't have problems at all. Rather, I will choose to blame the abhorrent Boss Hot Chocolate I got from a konbini the evening before. I was pretty bummed because I was looking forward to Miyajima as it would have been my first visit but I chose to just stay in my hotel and sit it out. I've made the mistake of pushing through stomach problems on my very first trip to Japan in 2017 and that led to a whole lot of unpleasant consequences and I learned my lesson from that. I spent the day planning out what I'd do the next few days at the other destinations...
Fukuoka
...one of which was Fukuoka! This was a city I was highly anticipating to visit because every other influencer raves about it as their favourite city in all of Japan, so my expectations were high. Not just because I wanted to find out what exactly makes this city so great in general but because at this point in time, tonkotsu ramen had been my least favourite type of ramen and I was hoping the place of its origin would change my opinion. Small spoiler: it absolutely did! I arrived in the city at around 1pm, left my suitcase at the hotel and went out to check some of my pre-marked spots on Google maps out.
The first place I checked out was Tochoji Temple. The temple itself was alright but what made me want to check it out were the reviews mentioning an exhibition "corridor" that depicted hell. I don't want to go into too much detail because it's best experienced by yourself so if you do visit Fukuoka, head in there - it's definitely an interesting experience.
Right next to Tochoji is Shofokuji, which isn't all that impressive but since it's closeby, might as well go there and see it to check that off the imaginary list. Once I had done that, I properly checked into my hotel and took a break because once again, I felt ill for some reason. Must have been some "aftershocks" of that Boss Hot Chocolate that already ruined my Miyajima plans! Either way, I took some meds, planned my next days but felt better in the evening so I risked it for the biscuit and headed out in search of some hakata/tonkotsu ramen.
I decided to go to this place, which wasn't exactly the highest rated place but if I had learned anything in those months of living in Japan, it's that places rated 4.5 or higher were usually rated that highly because they are visited by tourists who may skew the ratings by dishing out 5s even if a place isn't really that great. My favourite spots always hovered around ~4.0 but that doesn't mean that there weren't spots that were pretty bad at that rating so your mileage may vary. That being said - I enjoyed the ramen I ordered here. I'm not a fan of tonkotsu ramen that reeks of pork bones and this place barely had that smell. Some people may say that for a proper tonkotsu, it has to smell like that or whatever but it was always the reason I didn't like that type of ramen. This one was nice and "clean" and I finished the entire bowl. The price was incredible too, but recent reviews say there's been a hike in pricing. I was stuffed after that, headed back to the hotel and went to sleep.
The plan for the next day was to take the train to Dazaifu and explore around. It is most famous for the Tenmangu Shrine, which is one of the most important tenmangu shrines in Japan and regularly draws a lot of people to it. The shrine area is pretty big and lined with lots of shops and a pond leading up to the "main attraction". It was fairly busy that day so I couldn't get a clean shot of the shrine itself. I also wanted to see Komyozenji Temple but unfortunately, it was closed for renovations and apparently still is. No problem however as there were some more places to check out that weren't too far away from the station either. I walked over to Kanzeonji Temple, which was completely empty. In general, I felt like people really only went to Dazaifu for the tenmangu shrine and didn't care much for everything else - good for me!
Pretty much right next to Kanzeonji Temple lie the government ruins. Some of the locals struck up conversation with me! I really enjoyed taking a break here as the surroudnings were beautiful, the people were nice and it was just really a relaxing time. I must have stayed there for about an hour before making my way back to the station and returning to Fukuoka proper. But the day wasn't done yet. Once I got back to Fukuoka, I visited the Gokoku Shrine with its giant torii gate and golden exterior. The sky made for some great pictures. From there, I once again just walked my way towards Fukuoka Tower, another famous lookout tower in Japan. It seems like a lot of major cities HAVE TO HAVE ONE in Japan but I was not complaining. You get a really nice view of the city from up there, especially when the sun has set and the city lights turn on. The tower itself also looks really cool since it's lit up.
That was my final stop for the day. Now, one thing people always mention about Fukuoka are the yatai food stalls along the river side but to be quite honest, for me personally, I don't see the big appeal. Most of them were packed to the brim and I felt like it was fairly difficult to find one you could just sit down at. I don't doubt that you can have a nice experience once you actually do sit down and get to talk to some locals but I didn't get to enjoy that part myself, unfortunately. At least the river was already decorated with Christmas lights and such - Japan really loves switching on the Christmas vibe as soon as November begins.
On my last full day in Fukuoka, I took a trip to Nanzoin Temple. I've seen it in a video before and wanted to check it out because it looked interesting and boy was I not disappointed. The way to the buddha itself was really quaint with torii, statues and once again beautiful surrounding mountains. The buddha is absolutely massive, it's hard to convey on a picture. Massive feet, as well. There's some ice cream being sold there as well, which is nothing special but hey, I felt like I should get it just because. Checking through my photos and my timeline on Google Maps makes me realise I didn't really do much else that day besides going back to Fukuoka and having some really good Udon at this place.
And that anecdote about my timeline is kind of representative of my time in Fukuoka to be honest. I went to all the sights I wanted to go to and enjoyed them but most of those were outside the city itself and ultimately, I found myself to be a bit disappointed with it. As I mentioned before, perhaps it's just because I am not a nightlife kind of person and the yatai weren't exactly "inviting" so I might have missed out on what people usually mean when they mention Fukuoka is their favourite city. If anyone reading this is one of the people who DOES love Fukuoka, please go ahead and tell me what I should have done because I felt a bit underwhelmed in the end.
The thread is going to be kept a bit shorter this time because I didn't want to start the final leg of my November trip in here, it would have been to long in the end. To summarise this portion though: despite only being there for half a day, I really liked the vibe of Matsuyama and the ferry ride to Hiroshima is one of my favourite memories, especially because I felt like I really accomplished one of my long standing goals of cycling the Shimanami Kaido the day before and that ferry felt like a bit of a reward afterwards. Hiroshima is fantastic and I have visited it again in Spring 2023 with my mother to finally see Miyajima and also loved it (hopefully I can get that March/April report out before May ends lol). My last point about Fukuoka might make it seem like I didn't like it at all, which is wrong - I liked it and especially the parts in the prefecture, outside the city - it was just a bit underwhelming because I have set it up better in my mind from all the hype it was receiving online.
The next report will feature the last few cities of my November journey - Nagasaki (one of my top 3 favourite cities in all of Japan!), Kumamoto and Kagoshima. I hope you enjoyed reading this one and see you in the next. As always, if you have any questions or would like to talk about your time in any of the cities, feel free to comment!
