Finally put my Raptor Firewall in place! Been sitting on my desk for months!

2021.10.04 02:57 ntengineer Finally put my Raptor Firewall in place! Been sitting on my desk for months!

Well I finally did it! A few months ago I purchased a Raptor Firewall pre-loaded with pfSense. I did it for multiple reason, first, was that I had been running a m0n0wa11 firewall forever as a VM, but one of my ESXi hosts died (the only one I had online at that time). I had to emergency switch to my ISP's provided router, which sucked. And I wanted to eventually go Gigabit since the prices are so cheap now, and I didn't want to use a new ISP router.
So I bought this nice Raptor Firewall, and it's been sitting in a box for months. Part of it was I was going through some health issues until I finally had surgery at the end of June, and then since surgery I've had many complications. So I'm finally feeling more myself again after 3 months of recovery!
So today, I looked at the box, and said "I'm going to do this!" and did it :)
So now my home is no longer using some crappy ISP router from 12 years ago. (It is a Westell). Its now up on a brand new Raptor pfSense Firewall! WooHoo!

2021.03.08 23:12 elphin What to do about an ISP modem/router that I just got: Zyxel VMG4927-B50A

After many years struggling with DSL and at best 9 Mbit download and 2 MB upload (and at worst 1 down and 0,2 up) my rural town just got fiber optic. Yay!
I got a 1 GB service. The ISP replaced a 10 year old Westell modem with the Zyxel one in the title. It then connects to the same Netgear R6300 router that the Westell used. Everything wireless or wired is then connected only to the Netgear router. I have a fairly spread out house and have a Netgear extender.
Orginally I thought to get rid of the Netgear and to change all my devices to look for the new Zyxel router (this would mean just moving the wires to the Zyxel and changing the wireless access points on my wireless devices). Now I'm not so sure what to do.
I read that a few weeks ago an article appeared stating that Zyxel had a security problem with a hardcoded back door. I'm unsure if this is fixed (or even fixable). Also, since joining this subreddit, I get the idea that Zyxel isn't well thought of here.
So first, if the Zyxel has a open backdoor, does the Netgear firewall provide me any additional protection? I ask this to ascertain my immediate risk.
Second, should I get a new set up? And, if so, what?
At the very least I need to replace my extender. I now get about 200 MB download and 150 up from the Netgear router, but only about 45 MB down and up from the extender. This was fine with I had the limited DSL, but not anymore. So, ideally I'm thinking about a mesh network so my wireless devices don't have to change network names when I move around the house.
Also, I have many smart home and other networked devices - many Philips lightbulbs, 3 Arlo cameras, 10 Sonos speakers. phones. laptops, 2 PS4s, 6 Echos a NAS and a Nest.
I was amazed that I could get all of things working most of time with such poor internet connection. I suspect that many of them are mostly inside my network and don't leave the house much. The Sonos was the greatest trouble spot as it would stop and then start again. Obviously music pulled music off of the NAS was much better.
I apologize if I have given too much, but wrong information. I would be happy to answer any questions.

2020.12.09 20:48 metal_signal17 Getting new modem/router, want to make signal stronger

To preface, I don’t know much about this stuff, so please forgive me if I’m asking dumb questions or using the wrong terminology.
Context: My family and I live in a three floor house (upstairs, main floor, basement) and are replacing our old Westell 7500 with a Greenwave C4000LG. There are available telephone line outlets in the basement and upstairs, but not on the main floor.
Our Westell unit currently provides internet to our desktop in the basement via ethernet connection. Since it’s DSL, it has to be connected to the telephone line.
Because Westell is in the basement, the wi-fi in the rest of the house is weak. With the Greenwave coming soon, I have a few questions about how I could make improvements to our connection:
Could I put the Greenwave unit upstairs and have it provide wi-fi wirelessly to the desktop computer in the basement?
If we leave it in the basement, is there any way we could boost its signal on the main floor without using a super long ethernet cable to connect the Greenwave to another router?

2020.11.15 00:32 mr_big_brain Need a new wifi router. What should i get?

I am currently using a Westell 7500 DSL router. I’m not sure exactly how old it is, but i think it is from around 2010 - 2012. It is extremely slow and unreliable. I am lucky if i can get a download speed of .1mb/s. I would rather have 3 bars of 3G data.
What Verizon compatible DSL Wifi router should i get to replace this one?

2020.07.23 15:55 Gatla Westell 7500 replacement

I have an old Westell 7500 modem/router combo that I have to reboot once or twice a day. I have it on bridge mode and I'm using my Airport Extreme as my router. Is there a modem that I can replace it with that is just a bridging modem where I wouldn't have to change any settings? I can put one in bridge mode if need be, but I would rather have something simple. If that is not something available, what modem would be best? My connection can only go to a maximum of 8mbps down/1mbps up.

2020.05.30 04:37 BluesCatReddit Ziply Router: question about the product, not the price

This post is not at all about the $10/month fee. I'm just curious as to the actual brand/model of the router being offered by Ziply at the moment*. Bonus points for a link to a user manual, spec sheet, and/or any other documents. Thanks!
*Wayyyy back in the Verizon Northwest DSL days, I had a Westel DSL modem/router. Its menu structure was very different than the typical Linksys products I had used, and it had advanced firewall and useful settings; it was just a hassle to learn the UI. Other telcos were supplying Actiontec products.

2020.04.04 02:46 Insert-Senpai-Name How do I change the QoS on my router to prioritize gaming?

I have bad internet just to put it simply. I have DSL internet only because it's the only thing I CAN get. I have a Westell 7500 router which nobody is on. Instead, everyone is connected to a NETGEAR EX6200. Whenever anyone watches someone on Netflix or Hulu, my ping basically dies. It can go from a nice 30-50 to 500-1100 easily.
Is there any way I can change the QoS on my router to prioritize games instead of HD video streaming?

2019.08.19 21:12 Beepooppoop Seeking advice for improving my home network

Hello there, I believe this is an appropriate post for this sub, but please let me know if I should ask/post this somewhere else! Onto the stuff!
I am looking to improve our WiFi throughout my house. We have Frontier Fios, pay for I believe 60 or 70 up/down, and currently have a FUNCTIONING home network. We have two computers hard wired, with 4 cellphones, 2 laptops, and one smart TV operating on the WiFi. We have one modem/router, I think it acts as both, and it’s from frontier. It’s old. The model type is: Ultraline Series 3 A90-9100EM15-10 by WESTELL.
Our main issue is WiFi connectivity throughout the house. We have one extender located in a hallway nearby the office where our routemodem is and that is it.
Because I don’t want to hassle with renting a “new” one from frontier, I was looking into buying a router from amazon that can output a strong signal and I just piggyback it onto the frontier routeModem. Is this a bad idea? I also am not completely sure if what I said makes sense.
What router do you guys recommend that would be able to comfortably cover a 2300 sqft home? It is one story. Our budget for a router is $120, though if there is a router that truly is worth it, we can spend a little more than that.
Again, our WiFi works, and when we are hard wired it is fine. But the WiFi is abysmal once you leave the office, walk Straight down the hallway, and enter the opposite side of the house. The extender connection is also terrible.
Thank you for reading!
TL;DR: Wifi works, but it’s just really not good at covering our modest home size. I was thinking of buying a router from amazon and piggybacking it to the Frontier Fios one, and hopefully this one will broadcast a better signal. Sorry if I sound dumb, I am new to this. What router would you recommend for this? Budget ~$120

2019.01.18 09:52 red-n-green Using old router as network switch

Hi, I was going to use an old router instead of buying a network switch. It’s a 12 year old westell 327w that was provided by bellsouth. I’ve moved since I last used this thing and have a different internet provider. I was following some online instructions that recommended doing a 30-30-30 reset. Now whenever I connect to it, it wants me to go through the whole bellsouth modem installation process and won’t go past that step. Can I bypass that or did I fuck up with the reset? Thanks for any help.

2018.11.23 06:01 Bmoresgoddess How to set up WiFi in my house? ELI5 please?

Background: I’m terrible with technology and I’m trying to set up WiFi in my house for my sisters, since we live in a rural area our signal is bad. Usually when I’m at college, it’s doesn’t bother me but during the holidays, I’m bored out of my mind. We have a Dell desktop computer in our house that’s hooked up with cords to a Westell router.
My Questions: (1). When I buy a router online what should I make sure is included with it (to save myself from having to make extra trips to the store)? (2). Is there free WiFi since I already have internet or do I have to pay? (3). What is a relatively cheap router that I can that from Amazon that is pretty good?

2018.09.02 03:37 Lenin_Lime Centurylink Limbo - Throttled to 1KBps on a 1.5Mbit line.

So on Aug 28 in the middle of the day at home, websites stop responding. Eventually causing me to restart my modem and router and USB WiFi dongle. No dice. Eventually move on to other 2 modem models I own that have worked in the recent past, and then onto other computers and devices and removing the router from the equation for a straight connection. No dice. Mess with the DNS and add new addresses along with factory resenting modems. No dice.

All this time I’ve been having perfect sync with all 3 modems and I can still ping out to any major website without having to know actual number addresses. It’s just that actual websites don’t load, or that the websites load so slow that they timeout before anything comes of it. Only a few websites seem to have a very generous timeout period, which allows for my current average 8Kbps speed to download anything. All the while I’m syncing at 1.76Mbps to the local DSLAM. I’m also able to PING any website I want, like google.com with a decent average of 40ms. It’s just actual websites that don’t work.

So I do what every CL customers loves, which is calling the 1-800s. First guy takes about 30 minutes and tells me I need a new modem, even though I’m syncing at full speed. Second guy takes 30 minutes and ends up hanging up on me while I’m plugging in my Westell 7500 on his request. I call a third guy and demand he lets me talk to the second guy who hung up on me but he refused and we go through the entire dance again with him ending up saying that my case has been transferred to the “Programming Department”. He says that they will call back in 24hrs, I ask for their number but he just says they will call me. That promise was made on the 29th of Aug and I have yet to hear back. Next day I talk with the 4th guy (lady) and spend an hour going through the same dance until she eventually issues a repair ticket for sometime between then and mid October, and I have to be home during that entire time! I call back and the robot voice says it will be fixed by Sept 18th, which is still way too long.

If I want my online business to stay afloat I have to drive 20 minutes to Walmart and/or McDonalds to do anything. Which is crazy as this connection problem most likely isn’t even my fault. Just a few hours ago Ifound that my local Postal Office has been without Internet, probably as long as me.

I made a short video kind of showing off what I'm experiencing with my connection. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qn6dRCEVFss

2018.07.23 02:15 arcaniussainey Nonce question

so i believe a nonce is just a random hash passed from the client to prevent attacks. im wondering if i can just randomly generate hashes, and if its wrong, try again. i know the hash (a68a4b1362f12171) is a LM or MySql hah, thats 64 bits, and 16 characters in hexadecimal format. If i can generate this hash randomly, can i do so with python.
Edit
I would like to know whether or not a random nonce can be generated to send to a frontier router. The request is a Doc request, and is always the same except for a cnonce, and a nonce. My main question is does the router know the nonce, or does it stop spoofing attacks. the router does login based on IP and if you have the same src ip doesn't require a password.
If this is too much just tell me.
