Any advice for Civil Engineering at UofT / tips / advice

2024.05.18 01:29 Simple-Hat-4660 Any advice for Civil Engineering at UofT / tips / advice

Currently I am in a very stressful situation regarding choosing University for the 2024-25 year, and these are the variables that I have to consider:
  1. I applied for these Universities:
Brock - Game design (rejected, alternative program for Interactive Arts and Science (major scholarship of 13,600 dollars))
McMaster - Faculty of Engineering (rejected)
UW - Mechatronic Engineering (rejected)
UofT - Mechanical Engineering (rejected, alternative program for Civil Engineering)
UofT - CS (waiting response, next week)
McGill - CS (accepted)
McGill - Mechanical Engineering (waiting for response)
But I would like to know what do you guys know about Civil Engineering at UofT/tips/advice. And what would be the best option until know, taking into account tuition, residency, CoOp, networking, etc. In most of them I would need to live in residency (I live in St Catharines, so Brock is around the corner, but idk if the program they offered me is good)
Thanks!

2024.05.17 00:59 Simple-Hat-4660 HEEELLPP I don't know what to do regarding universities (update)

I applied for different programs at different universities in Ontario and quebec. These are:
1.UofT - Computer Science and Mechanical engineering 2. McMaster - faculty of engineering 3. UWaterloo - Mechatronic engineering 4. BrockU - Game Design 5. McGill University (Quebec) - Computer Science and Mechanical engineering
But I don't really what to do. I feel very lost rn.
Until now, I've been accepted into CS at McGill and BrockU but not for the program I chose but to Interactive Arts&Science (I don't even know what that is), but the situation is very complicated.
  1. I am an Ontario High school student. Idk if OSAP covers outside province and/or if studying in Quebec I have access to an OSAP type program but of that province?
  2. I was accepted into Brock with a 13,600 scholarship. (McGill didn't give me anything)
  3. I applied for a Major scholarship at McGill (I haven't received response yet)
  4. The deadline to accept or reject McGill offer was may 5th and was extended till may 14th
  5. Next round of admission at UofT is gonna be late may.
  6. In any of the universities. I don't have the money to attend.
  7. I haven't received any other answer from any other university.
  8. If I accept McGill to save my spot at the university and then wait for the response of the other universities. I would need to pay 400bucks right away. Which I don't have but If I decide to go, I'll pay.
  9. Currently I am living in St catharines, therefore Brock is right in the corner (no need of residence)
Prob those are the more important points so far. Just to clarify, my average 4Us is 96%
And idk if going to Brock for Interactive Arts & Science could limit my possibilities after studies bcs: 1. Brock is located I'm st catharines and generally speaking in the Niagara region there's nothing as CoOps or jobs in that field.
Meanwhile CS at McGill could have (according to my understanding) more field after graduation bcs is in Montreal and bcs is smth more open than Videogame related program
Sorry for the big Thread but I am struggling so much rn and I don't know what to do. Help me pls 🙏🏻
NOTE: IDK really know if the university you attend to for undergrad really affect your chances to get a job. (When thinking about Ivy League universities)
UPDATE: Today at 7 am I received an email from UW, got rejected (as expected🙃) and last week I got another email from McMaster (same fate). Hoping to hear good news from UofT (at this time I have no hope anymore.) Wish me luck!
I also decided to pay the 400 non-refundable just to save the spot at mcgill and now I am grateful about it with all these bad news from UW and McMaster.

2024.05.15 23:19 limmbuu Guide Related to Counselling Schedule, Branches and others.

I Tried to answer all questions I could, If you cannot find any answer, Please ask in the comment I will add them here.
EDIT- Added DB review link
1) Counselling & Schedule
Q. What will happen if i dont submit the fees by 20 may?would i be considered for further rounds of counseling?
If you DO NOT PAY your fees, Your current allotted seat will not be reserved and you will be freshly allotted a new branch based on the new cut-offs of that round.
If you pay your fees and DO NOT freeze, You will be considered for upgradation while keeping your present branch reserved, so based on your preference order, if you clear the cut-off for any branch above you present branch, you will get alloted a seat in that.
If you pay your Fees and FREEZE, no upgrade will take place, only in the spot round will you be able to change it.
2) Branches
Your preference order ideally should be COPC>COSE*>COE>COBS>ENC>AIML1>ECE>RAI1>EEC>EVD1>EE>EIC>Mechatronics/Mechanical
* COSE is CSE at Derabassi campus. First 2 years will be at DB campus rest 2 at Patiala. The degree awarded will be same as COPC. Will make a separate post on it. If you are interested solely on Placements/Want to actually study and are coming college without any SOTY-ish expectation, This should absolutely be put in your preference order. This branch was introduced as in DB, Thapar offers MBA. But it is not sustainable to only run MBA Program, so they also introduced CSE. There is no difference from academic viewpoint, Labs and Infra as well as Academics is on par Patiala campus. However, If you are into Sports, Activities and more into co-curricular activities, avoid this campus.
Here is a short review regarding Derabassi, The OP of that Post is also from DB so redirect all your questions there. I have also pinned the post.
1 These branches are new and hence no placement data is available for them. RAI is jointly offered by Mechanical and CS Department.
Some FAQs
Q Why CSE and COE?
So, Thapar originally had only COE Course available, CSE is more recently introduced to cope with demand. The syllabus difference is not much, in layman terms, COE has Hardware + Software but CSE focuses on core computer science. In 2nd year onwards we have subjects like AI and ML. During placements, there is no such difference between them. COE has intake of about 960 and CSE has intake of about 360. For more detail, you see the syllabus of both on the department websites. For eg. CSE is in demand in core CS sector for fields like AI/ML etc. COE is in demand for fields like IoT, Cybersecurity etc.
Q What is COBS?
COBS was introduced in collaboration with TCS(No, they wont give you job, They just designed the curriculum). This has some subjects related to Finance and Accounts but however note, THIS IS NOT RELATED TO MBA by any means. This is just a CS degree with some subjects which are beneficial in use cases like business software development. They have different subjects compared to both CSE and COE.
Q ENC vs EEC
EEC is a high demand branch in foreign countries especially in US. But not so in India. It is like 60% Electrical and 40% CS. (Same for ENC). ENC is better branch. You might have heard people say Apple hires from this branch, which is true, however they hire for the post of Verification Engineers, which is not SWE/SWD job and neither a VLSI/Comp Architecture designer job. Still prefer ENC over EEC.
Q Are XYZ branch students allowed to sit in Tech placements?
See this all depends on the conditions prevailing at the time of your placement. Some companies allow everyone while some don't.
Q Is XYZ branch worth it?
It depends on what your other options are currently. ECE and EE at thapar is way much better than CSE at some lower college. However, You won't leave IIT Bombay Aerospace for thapar CSE right? Ideally, Thapar CSE is a better option compared to Mid NITS and Core(Other than electronics) branches at Top NITs (Branches like Textile engineering). If fees is not an issue, Its better to take CSE at Thapar than core branches at DTU/NSUT.
Remember, No branch is a Bad branch. If you are able to stay in the top of your branch, you are guaranteed a great career start. Every branch has it's application without which our lives would not have been so easier.
Q How to judge college?
Don't judge college just based on it's placement. Also look for other things like Facilities, Faculty, Infra because you will have to spend 4 years there.
Q Manipal Vs. Thapar
Placements are similar in both the colleges. If getting the same branch, choose whichever is near to your home. If getting different branches, then prefer the one in which you are getting Computer-related branch. Ofc. distance plays a role, suppose you got ECE at thapar and IT at manipal but you live in Patiala then prefer thapar.

Scholarships

Checkout this document.pdf). It has all the details related to scholarship. Then see this document to see who all got Scholarship this year.
Again, I Tried to answer all questions I could, If you cannot find any answer, Please ask in the comment I will add them here.

2024.05.14 02:49 corrupted_p4nda Help me decide between Nanotech Eng @ UWaterloo and BASc @ UBC (READ BEFORE YOU VOTE PLEASE)

So I applied to engineering at UBC and mechatronics at Waterloo. I got into UBC, and got deferred from mechatronics to nanotech (I listed nanotech as a secondary option). I'm not entirely sure which program to pick, so I need some advice. Here are my pros and cons list for each
Waterloo Pros:
Cons:
UBC Pros:
Cons:
Note: the cost for both is not a factor here, because they are both roughly the same. UBC has lower tuition but higher residence and meal plan + transportation. Waterloo's tuition is more than double but cheaper residence and meal plan with no transportation cost. Both come around to roughly ~30,000$ for first year.
I would really appreciate some insight on anything I'm not considering, especially for the Waterloo side. I'm definitely biased towards UBC so I may be subconsciously downplaying aspects of Waterloo.
Thank you guys 🙏

2024.05.02 16:12 Intrepid_Soft7178 Fresh Graduate, Help me improve my resume

I am graduating this June from mechanical engineering and I am seeking for help to improve my resume. I have done a four month undergraduate reseach in the field of robotics for 4 months and I was tutor for a math course but I could not fit it in my resume. Is it worth extending or deleting some parts to write it? Are there any issues with my resume? Thank you for the feedback.

2024.05.02 07:48 GhettoLenny70 MBA or Masters in Cybersecurity?

So I graduated as a Mechatronics engineer, and the jobs that I have worked on are operational (maintenance mostly). After many job interviews with more focused areas (design, automation, electrical), I have not passed to the final interview due to questions being too difficult for a recent graduate even though the job requirements needed not that much complexity.
Thanks to my gpa, I was offered a good scholarship on any masters that I chose. I’m between an MBA or in Cybersecurity. Im mostly concerned about the job opportunities since I just finished paying off my student loans and im dried out.
Anyone with (or anyone who knows with) an MBA or a Cybersecurity Masters that may help me with this next life decision?
Thanks!!

2024.04.26 19:56 skraj1102 Please help me decide

Got admit from UCR Robotics and NYU Mechatronics and robotics. Interested in medical robotics. UCR Syllabus is far more diverse than that of NYU. But I think NYU Robotics has better medical robotics faculty and research . But is NYU worth the triple amount of tuition ? ( i recieved 8k USD scholarship from NYU though )

2024.04.16 03:47 robo-mess-404 Purdue or NYU

I got into Purdue of Ms in Engineering ( robotics) and NYU Ms in Mechatronics and robotics and I'm confused as to which one should I choose considering factors like employment after graduation, cost, campus life etc I'm not a fan of city life but would definitely love opportunities. Also Purdue doesn't offer any kind of GA, TA and RA ship while NYU does. Considering expenses both costs me around same as I have received a scholarship from NYU of 9000 USD per annum. While I have to pay the whole tution fee for Purdue.

2024.04.15 15:24 Krush10n Msc in robotics profile and other tips

Hello,
I'm a mechatronics engineering + computer science undergraduate from UNSW sydney. I currently have 2/5 years left until I graduate. intend on applying to the Msc in robotics program at EPFL. Just wondering what I can work on to make my application better.
I currently have a 85/100 WAM and have a few robotics projects under my belt. I've been running a robotics club here at UNSW for over a year and have engaged in competitive robotics nationally as well as organised and participated in battlebots competitions in sydney. I intend to participate in robocup, an international robotics competition representing UNSW sometime next year. I also have been consistently engaged in the competitive programming scene although I haven't achieved anything notable yet, I'm training to hopefully go to ICPC before I graduate.
As for work experience, I have been a UNSW casual tutor for a couple programming courses since my second year. I also have completed a 3 month internship at a tactile sensor company, and intend to gather more industry experience before I apply.
I do live independently and have no financial aid so working as a bartender and tutoring take up a good chunk of my time. I was looking to apply for scholarships as well. EPFL would likely be my first options, but if there are any other recommendations for masters in robotics that would be cool as well (I've been looking at TUM in germany but unfortunately it may be unfeasible with my schedule to reach a C1 level of german as required for it). Other than that, any tips on job hunting (hospo or preferably tech industry) would be appreciated:))

2024.04.14 22:05 GhostGrayTurbo-R Help finding PIG (pipeline inspection gauge) data sets.

Hello I’m a second semester mechatronics engineering student. I have a scholarship and in order to keep it I must acquire hours of social service. Right now my social service is focused on mechatronics research, my professor is working with a company that is currently developing a pipeline inspection gauge (which I will call PIG from now on) but real life testing isn’t cost effective for them at this moment. I was tasked with finding data sets of PIGs that have been tested before, but as I said I’m a second semester student so I don’t even know where to start. Can anyone here help me? I’m expected to find data sets for PIGs that use IMU or odometers as their sensors that can give these outputs: X position Y Position Z position Roll angular position Pitch Angular Position Yaw angular position Linear speed Linear speed Y Linear speed Z Roll angular velocity Pitch angular velocity Yaw angular velocity
I appreciate your help in advance.

2024.04.05 19:48 No_Security5312 UNI CRISIS!!!!

I live in UAQ and will be graduating this year with 85-90%. My closest options for uni are AURAK or AUS. But AURAK doesnt really offer a degree i want and AUS is hella expensive. I wanna purse the mechatronics eng course in AUS and wanted to know if I'd be eligible for any merit scholarships with my percentage. How liberal are they with their financial grants?
If not for either of these options I'd have to opt for a dubai uni and the commute is horrible. 2 or more hrs to and frm uni by bus and I dont think I'll have a good social life in this situation either cuz it'll be hard to attend clubs and other social events out of uni hours. But I'll power through if AUS is not considerable.
Any and all advice will be helpful and appreciated

I am a sophomore mechatronics engineering student seeking a 4 month internship in Fall 2024. I have 2 internships currently under my belt and am an active participant in student design teams. I am also the Lead Systems Engineer for my university's cubesat mission, sponsored by the Canadian Space Agency.
I have several other relevant projects and experiences that I didn't put on the resume like my involvement with the aerospace club and a robot arm that I designed as a personal project.
I know the wiki says to not include awards but my university's co-op office told me that awards are a must include.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

2024.04.04 20:26 aalsqqwkt I'm definitely not making it💀

I'm a sophomore rn and saw a post of a valedictorian with 5.0+ GPA and a bunch of extra good stuff, and she got rejected from upenn and so many other schools. Upenn is my "dream" school (also MIT, but I'm not gonna be delusional), and if she got rejected, I'm definitely not going to make it. 💀
I'm really scared. My hs has 4 quarters, and I got 2 Cs in Chem Honors Quarter 2 and 3 and a C in AP Bio and Algebra 2 Honors quarter 2. My GPA was a 3.88, but it's lower now.
I was vb manager (I was gonna join, but I suck plus I didn't get the forms in time, so.. at least I get my volunteer hours), and just started robotics and scioly this year. My school isn't that good...😪 also, my dad and mom (Asian parents) got mad at me for my C and so made me stop going to extracurricular the rest of the year and the rest of high school (trying my hardest to convince them to let me continue next year)...
I planned to take 4 aps next 11th grade year plus 2 dual enrollments (APUSH, AP CHEM, AP COMP SCI P (school doesn't offer ap comp sci a), and AP ENG LANG) with dual enrollment at LA Salle during next school year and dual enrollment online at the Community College of Philadelphia this summer. However, my school is broke and a title 1, plus our incoming freshmen are lower than our graduating senior class, so the district keeps cutting teachers... we might not even have all these APs anymore or teachers to teach them. Plus, I'm Asian (viet, parents are immigrants, 4 ppl family, less than 35k a year, I'm a us citizen), and it's harder for Asians.
I live in Philly, so the top high schools here are Central and Masterman and Central's senior grad insta page is like full of upenn acceptances. It's crazy (I admit, I'm envious).
I def won't make it, so community college here I come! I'm thinking I'll just try transferring from ccp? Save money if I don't get scholarships or full ride as well. Might just go to drexal, which isn't bad but expensive. I plan to major in mech engineering or mechatronics if whatever school I go to offers it. I want to continue working with robots, really. Otherwise, a dentist. It was my plan before I started exploring cs and robotics.

2024.03.31 17:52 Pyth4k Studying engineering abroad in Germany?

Hey!
I am currently a first year mechatronic engineering student and I currently live in South Africa. I've been considering studying abroad for a while now and since I have a few friend in Germany I thought it would be a good option. I am also currently learning German as my 3rd language which is also a determining factor.
The only obstacle I have left to overcome is finances. Due to the poor exchange rate between ZAR and Euro it will be difficult to pay off my studies, accommodation etc. so I was wondering if there were any companies that help abroad students with scholarships/bursaries. In SA I know BMW used to give our full bursaries to students (not sure if they do anymore). Getting a bursary from Audi or BMW would be great, even if I was conditioned to work there after my studies, which is my goal anyway, so it's a win-win.
I don't t know if this dream seems a bit far-fetched but any help/ advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated! :)

2024.03.23 18:04 TigrEuphrat001 MSc in Engineering is worth it?

I am about to graduate with bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from one of the leading european universities and I cannot narrow down my options.
I started in automotive engineering but the department recently changed the curriculum to adjust to the industry trends. So the program became basically a mechatronics degree with focus on automotive industry. The topics like control theory, electrical machines, electronics, hybrid management do not attract me but I also understand that purely mechanical devices will no longer be applied. I was reading SAE journals and based on the trend I assumed that the electrification deadlines of the car fleets will leave a lot of professionals experienced with ICE layout without jobs and the supply of mechanical engineers in the automotive field will outweigh the demand significantly. So I switched to mechanical engineering to be safe.
I work in the construction engineering focused on HVAC systems. Tbh I am not enjoying it as it looks loose and experienced people kinda dominate the decision making process, ignoring the theoretical principles without sensible clarification (trust me I have been doing it for a decade kinda stuff). I am not sure whether I am in a wrong environment or the MEP and HVAC in particular is so dull after all of those mathematics and physics we studied.
Now I don't know what are the questions I have to ask myself. I definitely don't want to settle for an average billpaying office job, but I also don't want to spend another 2-3 years on master's of science degree in engineering which will prepare me for anything but the industry.
I see the job offers in data science and machine learning and I feel like I have all the necessary skills and knowledge to switch to that domain before the sunk cost is too high. I took online courses in decision making and found it fascinating. I can start doing IBM or Google certification in DS and ML. My doubts are: 1) Will AI and LLM make the value of human contribution negligible in the following couple of years? 2) How ready will I be by completing the mentioned certification programs? 3) What are the untold questions to ask yourself before starting? 4) What can I do with all the knowledge and skills to make 6 figures as quick as possible?
My "hard" option would be finding MEng degree in "Energy Engineering and Management" which uses DS & ML techniques heavily. The concern is which english speaking country offers scholarship or student loan for Non-EEA students?
I am interested in green machines, efficiency, lean principles, decision making in the conditions with uncertainties, psychology, etc. It may look like economics I suppose. And yes, I don’t like physics beyond magnetism.
