2024.05.16 03:59 ChrisMovieExpert My Very Early 97th Oscar Predictions (May 2024)

Predictions may tend to change as usual. The 2024 Cannes Film Festival just started, so there may be some alterations during and after if the movies featured in the festival are praised or panned, and whatever wins the top prizes (especially the Palme d'Or) later on this month.
UPDATE: Megalopolis just screened at Cannes and it looks like it's now out of the Oscar race (removing it from all major categories in my Oscar predictions). However, I think the potential possibility of a few technical categories may still be open.

2024.05.10 10:39 Erwinblackthorn The Influence of the 80s

From vaporwave aesthetics to the endless amount of action-movie reboots, we can see a building trend of remembering the 80s as the current form of nostalgia bait. Being about 40 years ago, the 80s are the catalyst for most, if not all, media we see now. The internet began back then, CGI was being tested, global reach started to take hold, electric keyboards became a music staple, and video games had their first crash due to so much home console production. The 80s were a time of massive change that we don’t notice as a difference from the 00s, especially when it comes to things like film and music. Trying to imagine the difference in the metamodernism of 1980-2020 is like trying to see a difference in the art nouveau of 1880-1920.
Previously, I talked about how hipsters change trends every 10 years because of the way public schools work, but the overall change of society goes from generation to generation. The halfway point of a human life is about 30 years, which is about how long it takes for a person in their childhood to enter a “production” age of media influence. Something like Stranger Things needed the Duffer Brothers to enter their late 30s in order for their pastiche and play to be worthy of directing, because they are not able to make these massive projects in their teens or even early 20s. Like any other trend, there was a trailing of its existence in video games of the 90s, as well as movie sequels like Terminator 2, that kept things alive after the decade. Our pop music continues to carry on the electronic sounds that sprouted from the 80s, with the tabloids focused on the singers and their sex lives more than the quality of their music. Most importantly, the inclusion of anime and adult cartoons from back then continues to spread into western fashion as production transitions into a digital form that is easier to maintain than pen & paper.
It's not that the 80s never ended, but rather we never leave the shadow of such a dramatic shift in culture. The sheer amount of consumerism, brought on by globalism and the end of the Vietnam War, caused propaganda to enter a more hippy form of anti-war rhetoric. Ironically, the vast amount of action movies from these times were done in order to say how bad war was, with movies like Rambo: First Blood and Platoon done as a way to make it look yucky. Due to the inability to critique the war during the war(or even shortly after), movies like Star Wars and Aliens would present the Vietnam War in a fictional sci-fi setting, allowing themselves to slip by censorship and inspire future projects. The big guns of the 80s, like the M202 Flash (a quadruple-tube rocket launcher) or the M60, were staples of movie posters and standees that lured us into seeing these action star achievements.
Big names like Arnold Schwarzenegger and John-Claude Van damme became global phenomena due to their action roots requiring zero dialogue. Their inability to speak well allowed their body language to do all the talking, with slasher movies rising up like Jason did from the dead in Friday the 13th, for the same reasons. And like the slasher villain, their franchises wouldn't die, allowing home media to turn box office failures into cult classics. Along with the exploitation of war, and the senseless murder of horny teens, came an abundance of gory practical effects, now that the censors were more lenient on sex and violence. The Hays Code prevented clear exploitation of sex, drugs, and violence up until the late 60s; quickly changed by the death of the head of the MPAA to then put the liberal Jack Valenti in his place.
After the Grindhouse era of the 70s, the 80s was all about showing drug use, naked women, and body organs flying all over the place. One of the main contributors of this exploitation, Roger Corman, was the main mentor for most of the big directors during this sudden spark of everything taboo. Deemed “The Pope of Pop Cinema” and “The Spiritual Godfather of New Hollywood”, his influence created a new form of movie production that would spit in the face of old Hollywood by resorting to everything the censors hated. Morals, culture, nationalism, conservatism, modesty, all of these were to be mocked and made into satire as the world became smaller and more global. Besides the advent of New Hollywood were the movies influenced by the Italian crime genre of Poliziotteschi and the Hong Kong action films of the 70s, further increasing the focus on casual urban violence.
Consumerism increased dramatically as fake industries rose to the top. Toylines and video games, as well as children's entertainment, exploded during this decade. The focus on the youth, by selling them the latest trend, was aided by easier access to commercials and even the infomercial that was freed from restrictions in 1984. Innovating technology meant there were new gadgets for people to buy, with nerds becoming more present through our fascination with these new inventions. Video games and movies were easier to gain an audience of collectors, thanks to the advent of the VHS and cartridge.
The ones who grew up during this generation are now the main contributors to what toy companies call “the kidult market”, the adults who still buy toys meant for kids.
Home movies became more popular because of the camcorder, with indie films growing in popularity from the ease of production. While the modernist slogan was “make it new”, the metamodernist slogan was “make it snappy”. It didn’t matter if things were dumb or absurd, because pastiche and play made sure we could simply recognize it and find it entertaining through intertextuality. Rather than focusing on quality or culture, the 80s was a time of focusing on simply making things exist, no matter how silly the premise was. The studios put the captain hats on the directors, with these directors of New Hollywood walking straight out of Woodstock, with plenty of acid still in their bloodstreams.
Music became a different beast once it shifted its platform from radio to TV. The introduction of visual music videos caused musicians to become performative artists, with their fashion sense mimicked by their fans at a wider scale. To attract the audience through a performance, crazy clothes and hairstyles became the latest craze, changing the clean hairstyle of prior into a mousse filled mullet. Punk, goth, heavy metal; all of these were mirrored by the new romantics, glam, and synthwave that shared the same spots on MTV. This was the time when being rebellious and “original” was no different from being any other person, because the fashion was just a difference between leather jackets with studs or jean jackets with rhinestones.
TV dramatically changed to what we know now as “daytime television for mom” and “primetime for dad”. In fact, the first talk show run by a woman was none-other than the Oprah Winfrey Show, started in the 80s. This was done because studios knew that moms were at home, available after the kids left for school, and they could watch a show made for them while they did their aerobics. For broken homes in this period, the latchkey kid generation was forced to stay home after school as a safety procedure by the increase of mothers in the workforce, with single motherhood increasing from the increased access of welfare. Staying home, with little parental supervision, had a strange result of Gen X being raised by the idiot tube, comic books, and home consoles.
In that regard, not much has changed other than the addition of streaming and other online-related activities.
Feminism changed in the 80s by sparking the dreadful sex wars: a debate between whether or not feminism is supposed to be pro-porn or anti-porn. Yes, this was the main issue for feminists during the 80s, until the transition to third wave feminism in the 90s. During this period, media depicted women as valiant prostitutes or brave business women, wearing shoulder pads either way. The demand for equality caused a confusion when feminists couldn’t decide on whether or not sucking dick for money was considered “feminist”. Freedom was questioned and the result became the third-wave feminism that began to question whether or not there was a difference between men and women at all.
Both debates are still going.
Video games were still primitive, barely entering a coherent bit quality, with violent games like Mortal Kombat making concerned parents worried about what their kids are getting into. The arcade was the new amusement hall, allowing kids to throw quarters into “entertainment vending machines” that occupied their time. The mall wasn’t started in this decade, but it began to flourish as the main hotspot for teenage activity, thanks to the arcades and food courts. During the 80s, paper cups of the food court had an orange flower design, which was replaced with the more iconic Jazz design in the 90s. Yes, I was shocked when I learned that as well.
When we view this newfound addiction to the 80s, we are viewing the catalyst of why we are the way we are today. The sex and violence in media started around the 80s, the performative art of musicians expanded thanks to music videos, and everything we see online was pioneered by Gen X nerds who were high on crystal Pepsi and cocaine. With how little has changed, it’s no wonder the 80s are much loved and seen as “a time we remember but didn’t grow up in”. I don’t want this to be seen as a nightmarish journey down memory lane, but rather a reminder that the 80s are when postmodernism first sprouted into metamodernism and started what we suffer through today. Like everything else in mainstream media, the nostalgia bait is fake and forced.
I am not surprised that Gen X will claim their time was better, because that’s all they know. But consider the bits and pieces that inspired the 80s itself, from what occurred 30 years before it. Shows like Happy Days tried to cling to the charm of the greasers during the 50s, or how quirky musicals like Grease and Little Shop of Horror used pastiche to remind us of how wonderful the 50s were. Creature features of the 80s were mostly inspired by the alien invasion movies of the 50s that were used to symbolically spread anti-communist propaganda, accidentally carrying this sentiment into the 80s as the Iron Curtain collapsed. Like any other era, the good seems to out weight the bad, because the good is a channeling of what came before and what lasts forever.
Next time someone demands the 80s, secretly give them the 50s. As good as people try to make the 80s out to be, it is hard to argue against the massive influence of the 50s that caused many of our much loved properties to exist. Sure, Woke Hollywood is now turning those classics into flaming piles of shit as a way to destroy the Four Olds, but we can always revive what was from before. But whatever we do, we must not treat the 80s as the be all, end all. We must treat it as what it is: the origin point of why our media today is totally bogus.

2024.04.22 21:27 MN_gal_in_CA 30th birthday Santa Monica / Venice adventure hunt ideas needed

I’m planning my 30th birthday for a Saturday in May and I’d like to do an adventure hunt around Santa Monica / Venice and am hoping for some fun ideas from locals! Any ideas/edits/suggestions are welcome! I’m hoping to get the list up to 30 tasks -- and ideally will make it flow from one task to the next based on location. (Keeping it in Santa Monica / Venice to avoid traffic / driving)
Here’s the ROUGH draft of what I have so far:

30th Birthday Adventure Hunt Itinerary:

Find the iconic Santa Monica Pier, known for its amusement park and scenic views. Ride the Ferris wheel and capture a photo from the top.
Find the pub under the pier known for its 32-ounce beers – finish a beer before heading to your next task.
Find an influencer in the wild – get them to make a video with you.
Street perform at the Third Street Promenade until someone donates money to you.
Find the giant chairs on Santa Monica Beach and take a video of each member of your team doing a starfish jump off one of them.
Head to the Santa Monica rings – one person on your team must make your way across them without touching the ground.
Head to the Santa Monica sports bar known for its peanut butter shots – take a pic taking one as a team.
Strike a pose in front of the Venice Sign with your team forming the number '30' using your bodies. Get creative!
Find a local stand that sells unique sunglasses and take a selfie wearing the most outrageous pair you can find. Bonus points if you buy them and rock them the rest of the day.
Head towards the Venice Skate Park where you'll find thrills and spills on wheels. Attempt to learn a new skateboarding trick from a local skater. Capture your progress (or falls) on video and celebrate your adventurous spirit.
Find the outdoor gym known for bodybuilders and weightlifters, where Arnold Schwarzenegger used to train. Look for a spot where you can pump iron by the ocean. Take a picture with the buffest person working out there.
Challenge a fellow team member to an impromptu flexing competition with a passerby. Strike your best bodybuilder poses and have a bystander judge the winner.
Take a creative photo at the Venice Canals resembling a famous Italian cityscape.
Serenade a group of ducks or swans at the Venice Canals with your best rendition of a famous song. Record the performance for a memorable video clip.
Search for a street named after the 'Father of Venice.' This trendy boulevard is filled with unique shops and eateries. Find the bar with the rainbow crosswalk at the entrance that’s namesake is a combination of two animals. Bet a stranger to buy you a drink.
End watching the beach at sunset.

2024.04.22 20:47 Mary2272 30th birthday adventure hunt ideas needed

I’m planning my 30th birthday for a Saturday in May and I’d like to do an adventure hunt around Santa Monica / Venice and am hoping for some fun ideas from locals! Any ideas/edits/suggestions are welcome! I’m hoping to get the list up to 30 tasks -- and ideally will make it flow from one task to the next based on location.

2024.04.08 20:28 CP4-Throwaway A rough estimate of celebs that may seem more X, M, or Y from Famous Birthdays, based on the widest definition of my personal transitional Gen Y/Anadigital/Xennial/MilleXer microgeneration, b. circa 1977-1985 (UPDATED)

Just for context, in this specific post:
X = Gen X
Y = Cusp
M = Millennial
This is a repost from the original (which was an extension of the very original post here) that I did a few years back, just to be updated for 2024 because I thought it'd be to fun to explore this again.
But I will exclude the 1984-1985 list because that'd be way too long. I'll add them in the comment sections. So in this post, I'll focus on the celebrities born from 1977-1983.
I know the vast majority of this sub will disagree but I'll post it anyway.
This is based on the vibes and/or appearance of the celebrity so please don't take this too seriously as this may or may not be accurate, depending on one's view of Gen X and Millennials.
This is based on my current perception of these celebrities.
WARNING: THIS POST WILL BE SUPER LONG!!! DISCRETION ADVISED!!!!!!

Edge vs Vaggie review
Death Battle has made its triumphant return today with Season 11's premiere, Edge vs Vaggie. As a massive fan of both franchises, I feel compelled to give my thoughts on it.
Starting with Edge's analysis, it was pretty good. I like how they focused on feats actually from the Mario + Rabbids games, reserving mainline stuff for black boxes, and bringing up the Sparks’ abilities until after Edge turns against Cursa to save them, but it's nothing special and I wish they actually weighed the Flying Blade. My GOAT Rabbid Mario getting namedropped in Edge's analysis when Tai Lung wasn't in Po's is great tho. Well, for me it's great, I know Edge wouldn't be happy the macho maroon wormed his way into her analysis. All in all, it was decent, but I think for the first Mario fight in almost 5 years Edge's analysis was lacking.
Vaggie's analysis on the other hand stole the fucking show. I expected absolutely NOTHING from the character who only has a half-hour pilot and only 8 episodes where she's the least prominent character of the main cast aside from Niffty, but they supplemented the lacking material around Vaggie herself with the lore of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. Unlike when they did this with Yang in Season 2, it doesn't feel like an advertisement because everything they bring up actually ties back to Vaggie. The Exterminations are literally the only reason Vaggie even exists and showing us Hell as a civilization makes her slaughtering thousands of Sinners all the more evil and her turning good hit harder. The Sinners’ regeneration and the detour into Helluva Boss also serves a point as Vaggie's angelic spear negates that regeneration, as an Exorcist she upscales from Imps, and the Angelic Rope restraining Stolas is used to back up her scaling to Stolas, who as an Ars Goeita more powerful than the Overlords you really do need to actually justify her scaling to. Speaking of scaling, though I expected FTL scaling I was genuinely not prepared for full-on Solar System Level Vaggie scaling to the Angels expanding creation, I thought that would have been too vague a feat to use, but they do justify it with Vaggie having been purposely created to be a warrior and therefore logically able to scale to an individual Angel's share of that.
The ending line about the warrior born to be Heaven's soldier finding her true paradise with the very demons she was born to slay was absolutely amazing. Vaggie's analysis was a solid 10/10.
Onto the fight itself and it's one HELL of a start Season 11.
The set-up is one of the best in the show, on the level of Snake vs Sam though I wouldn't call it Omni-Lander level. Cursa's Forces have come for the depths of Hell, Darkmess spread throughout Pentagram City and putting a Darkmess Tentacle with a menacing Darkmess Eye on the clock tower that has the countdown to the Extermination, one reminder of unstoppable doom replacing another. We open on Edge kicking some ass and being disgusted by the depths of Cursa's cruelty storming the afterlife itself to find the souls of the Sparks she's drained just to steal their energy a second time, and as she moves on to the next area she's confronted by Vaggie.
Vaggie tells Edge that unlike the other worlds her master invaded, Hell was relatively prepared for the army of Cursa the Destroyer. Stolas of the Goeita family read the stars and delivered a prophecy of an invasion from rabbits from beyond the cosmos, lead by a commander with teeth triangular and sharp as a shark with vividly-coloured hair erupting out from her fur like a flame. I love how namedropping Stolas isn't just a pointless shout out, he's actually DOING something worth mentioning him for, and it being the prophesying he does in Helluva Boss and Edge being in Hell to stop Cursa makes this feel like a genuine crossover instead of Edge just manifesting in the world of Hazbin Hotel “because reasons”. While the hair erupting out of the commander's fur like a flame makes it clear the prophecy was talking about Midnite, Edge still fits everything else, so Vaggie isn't being dumb for mistaking Edge for the commander.
With a sad sigh, Edge acknowledges that given how she still was the leader of the Spark Hunters when this prophecy must have been given, it probably IS speaking of her. She gives Vaggie one chance to back away and let this prophecy of the Goeita be broken, saying she's not that person anymore and she wants to help, but Vaggie coldly responds “Don't try to deceive me, Spark Hunter. It's one of the sins that gets people sent down here.” before attacking. I know some people might think it's out of character for Vaggie to not believe Edge since unlike Sir Pentious she hasn't tried to kill her in the past 6 hours, but Edge just admitted to having been the commander of Cursa's army and for all Vaggie knows her claim of having changed could have been a ploy to get into the Hotel since Charlie would be one of Cursa's main targets. And Edge giving Vaggie one chance to avert Stolas' prophecy honestly sounded more like a threat so she wasn't giving Vaggie much reason to believe her.
Edge is voiced by her official voice actress, Lexie Kendrick, and Vaggie is also voiced by her official voice actress. . . for Hazbin Hotel's PILOT, Monica Franco. She still does the original pilot voice, which is already close to how Vaggie sounds in the show, but she copies Stephanie Beatriz's inflections to a tee, resulting in an almost flawless impression of Vaggie's show voice.
The animation looks great. It's Hand Drawn and tries to imitate the style of Hazbin Hotel, which is perfectly fitting as the fight is taking place in a location from that show. Speaking of, Pentagram City is a sight to behold. It's brightly lit, Edge's white fur and her differently colored Sparks stand out against the predominantly red environment, and buildings with Darkmess on them have all their lights off, indicative of the Darkmess siphoning away their energy. And whenever the clocktower appears, the Darkmess Eye on it is visibly watching Edge and Vaggie's fight. And of course the various effects from the Spark powers look good too, as to be expected.
And then there's the track, Edge of Trust. Where the visuals took Hazbin Hotel's style and ran with it, the track did the same with Mario + Rabbids’. It'd fit right in with Sparks of Hope's OST, even with its vocals. And while the track art doesn't appear to be anything special, just Edge and Vaggie's weapons crossed over each other with the opponent's shadow in the metal, as a massive fan of both shows I recognized a very cool detail. Vaggie's shadow has the red X of her eyepatch, making her look more like an Exorcist, and her shadow is in Edge's Galactic Blade, which came with a message telling Edge to trust that her friends will accept her for who she truly is. THAT weapon showing the real Vaggie in her reflection is just peak artistic vision.
Onto the fight itself, Vaggie only really has her spear and eventually flight so powersets really have to fall on Edge here, who is more than able to pick up the slack. Beyond just the obvious Flying Blade and Stormblade she uses a good deal of Sparks, infusing her sword with EVERY element and inflicting their separate status effects on Vaggie, blasting her out of the sky with an AOE Spark when her flight becomes problematic, healing, buffing herself, turning invisible, and using two summons. She does pretty much everything you'd want to see from her arsenal. And while power interaction is severely limited, they manage to do the one thing interaction they can by having Vaggie kill Spark by destroying their souls with her Angelic Spear and whenever she crosses the distance she completely dominates, showing her edge in skill.
The first half of the fight, while good, isn't exactly anything special combat-wise but the banter's great. Vaggie not putting up with Edge's arrogant tough girl attitude and Edge just being a little shit in response is a fun dynamic and the bit where she responds to Vaggie's angry Spanish in Rabbidese with a mocking “Bwaaaah” that translates to “If you're gonna insult me, at least do it in English. I'm four feet tall and not wearing pants yet you're the only little pussy here.” is fucking GOLD.
The second half of the fight is phenomenal. Edge lands a massive hit to Vaggie's back, splitting her shirt open right where her wings used to be and cutting her hair down to a length more like what she had as an Exorcist but keeping her current hairstyle. As the Flying Blade is embedded halfway through her back, Vaggie forces herself up to her feet, rips it out, and breaks it in half over her knee. Actually a little scared by this, Edge asks how the hell Vaggie's standing with her spine severed and as Edge of Trust swells, the Angel tells the Rabbid that no matter how bad the odds get, she won't give up until her dying breath, she won't let the one she loves come to harm!
And with that, Vaggie's back heals, not just from the injuries Edge inflicted throughout the battle but also sprouting her grey wings now that she's Out For Love.
Deprived of her original weapon, Edge pulls out the Galactic Blade to continue the fight. But she pauses for a moment first. Her past as a Spark Hunter coming back to haunt her with Stolas’ prophecy, Vaggie being rejuvenated by the literal power of love, the Galactic Blade being what she falls back on. . . it makes her think of the message that came attached to this weapon when she first received it. And with a little spin as the real battle begins, she repeats it outloud. "Carry this Galactic Stormblade with confidence, Edge, and trust that your friends will see you for who you truly are." But she goes on, having a bit of character development as she realises how true Rosalina's words truly were.
“Trust, friendship, love. . . I used to think that was all a bunch of bullcrap. That getting attached again would only make me weak. But now I can see that line of thought was what limited me. I guess I have some friends i've gotta have a heart to heart with once this is all over. You may be an Angel, Vaggie, but i'll move Heaven and Earth, even Hell for good measure to protect them!”
The fighting becomes more intense, Edge ramping up her usage of the Sparks and Vaggie leveraging her flight the best she can. Dive bombing with her spear, picking Edge up and flying into the air to separate her from the Sparks, even grabbing her by the ear and dragging her across buildings before throwing her back to the ground. The only times Edge doesn't use a Spark to attack Vaggie are when she's being carried through the air, even when using the Galactic Blade she imbues it with a Spark's power, and with the Oozer and Scoper summoned it's 3 against 1. Vaggie's a fucking BEAST, killing three of Edge's Sparks including the two summoners she was using to stop the Scoper and Oozer from coming back, and gouging out Edge's left eye in the leadup to the kill.
Speaking of the kill, I quite like it. Edge sees Vaggie about to kill Regenesis and needing all the speed she can muster she activates Stormblade, but Vaggie blocks every strike until her spear's handle shatters, leaving her wide open for Edge to chop her head into pieces along the X in her eyepatch. Much like Cloud after killing Link, Edge stands over Vaggie's corpse and makes one final remark, saying "X marks the spot." Which is honestly kinda fitting since the Flying Blade is a wannabe Buster Sword.
The conclusion's fine enough. Even without scaling to the mainline games Edge was placed at 1/9th Universal downscaling from Cursa creating the Darkmess Dimension and 150,000 times lightspeed off the Spark Hunters piloting their own ship and being faster than Captain Orion who killed a Comet Eater that could keep up with his own ship that made the same trip from Pristine Peaks to Cursa's Stronghold, Vaggie never had a chance with that stat gap. Still, they gave her her dues, acknowledging her superior skill and mobility and being able to counter Edge's versatility in time by killing the Sparks.
Edge vs Vaggie is a solid 9/10, held back only by the mediocrity of Edge's analysis.
APRIL FOOL'S! But, for the sake of the joke, tell me your thoughts on this "episode" in the comments.

2024.03.13 16:08 worms-for-eyes lock hairstyle topic on fact check

what dax doesn't understand and what monica never mentioned, is that black people were (and still are) discriminated against bc of their hair. black people are seen as "ghetto" and "unprofessional" for having braids or locks, while white people just see it as a cool hairstyle. black people with locks are denied jobs and treated poorly in public places bc of their hair. white people with locks are not treated that way. so, out of respect for, and in recognition of the plight black people with locks have endured, white people should not have a lock hairstyle. these discriminations are still happening today!!!! as we speak. leave 1860 out of it. it's not about who "invented" what.... very ignorant conversation to have to listen to lol
