2024.05.19 06:00 AutoModerator Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists and New Residents)

This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.
READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed.
HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.
TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.
WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.
WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.
WE PROBABLY DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT but you can get some good tips from this thread from a sex worker.
DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.
Here is what's on at the major venues this week.

2024.05.19 05:49 Logical_Round_5935 If immigrants get to send money back to their home countryui don't see a problem with foreigners going there to retire

So the thing people have is that if an immigrant with a lower currency goes to a higher currency country and sends money back home, its fine. for example, if an Indonesian goes to UK and sends money home, that's fine.
However if s British person goes and retires in Indonesia or what not people say that's not fine because that's raising the cost of living. However what people don't realize is that their own people are doing the same. Not everyone can afford to leave Indonesia to get educated get a job and send money back. the complaint that when the British goes to Indonesia he's making the rich rich and the poor poorer..
Yet your fellows are doing the same. And taking British money out of UK would make UK economy go down. Maybe its not that big but there's that. I fully support them doing that as I believe in freedom, but just don't think people should he hypocrites

2024.05.19 05:05 throwRAsamosa I (37 m) might need to go close to NC with my mother to prevent my wife (37 f) from leaving me, any advice on the best way forward?

I’m going to do my best to paint the full picture, this is most definitely not a simple situation and I’ll put my hand up and say I haven’t handled a lot of things well.
First thing, I am white Anglo and my wife is British/Punjabi (born in UK, parents and upbringing Sikh). Just prior to getting engaged in England I offered an idea of us living in Australia (where I’m from) for a period so she could work abroad (a dream of hers) and she could get to know a little about my upbringing. She agreed and was excited about coming over.
2021 was when we arrived here, to summarise things: we stayed with my parents (big house we had space), we had to endure a hard lockdown, our wedding plans were thrown into chaos, my wife had a cancer scare, and then there were a myriad of family related actions/comments that were so far removed from everything she’s known that she felt rejected and disrespected by my mum in particular.
I struggled to fully understand all of this, I tried to find common ground with her and my mum, and I tried to help her to better understand my families “ways” as well as improve my mum’s communication with her. I also told my mum to reign it in, but needless to say I failed. In fact everything I seemed to do only made it worse. When we moved out we essentially went NC with my mum in particular but my family as well. I told my wife that her well-being mattered more to me and I allowed her space to heal, and when she said she needed to quit her job to focus on her mental health I supported her (emotionally and financially). I tried several attempts at trying to help her build a life that wasn’t just based around me, she wasn’t particularly receptive to it.
Then the big one that has set us further back that I’m worried we can’t come back from, I was diagnosed as practically infertile. We have both gone through our own grieving process with it and have tried a couple of rounds of IVF. Needless to say we haven’t had success. We are now preparing ourselves to leave my country to go live near her family, she needs to be close to them and their values, and I appreciate she has given life in my country a go. For a while things seemed to be better with her, she was happy and excited about going back home, but now she has told me that any time I have any interaction with my mum it triggers off all her emotions and reminds herself of the pain she’s experienced. I’m not downplaying her experiences, I know it’s been a struggle to look at my upbringing and realise it’s against so much of what she believes in.
She has consistently told me she wouldn’t stand in my way of spending time with them, in fact she encouraged it. But now she has told me every time I did that it would cause her pain, she would put it aside for me. While I appreciate that, I wish she hadn’t done that. I’m a simple guy, you say something I take it at face value.
So this comes to the current issue I’m at, she gets so upset and angry at the thought of me spending time with them (mum mainly) that she wants to have me essentially go NC with hethem. She has basically given an ultimatum of “her or me”. I hate this, but as I said earlier we essentially did this when we shifted out. We’re going to be busy with work and arranging the move, but I’m also mindful that this will be my last months with them and I hate the idea of leaving them thinking I hate them. They’re in their late 70s, I feel like I might be leaving them behind forever.
Has anyone had experience of having to go close to NC with family through the wishes of your partner? Has anyone else gone through the experience of thinking your family is perfectly and then bringing a partner in you find out they are not what you think they are?
I feel like the stakes are so high no matter what I do, it feels like either way I lose.

2024.05.19 04:50 Lipmoshacook Considering going to drama school as an "older" student who is ten years into an acting career and already has professional credits -- am I insane?

I'd really love to hear from those who attended programs at a less "conventional" age. The main factors that make me hesitant are 1. money to pay for it (obviously) 2. being the old guy 3. backtracking and losing three years of potential professional work.
I'm 28, turning 29 pretty soon, and never went to college at all. I moved straight to LA after finishing high school and have bounced around between here and NY ever since. I've booked a decent amount of work and I'm a member of both unions. I've always been in classes, but I feel as though the once-a-week scene work just isn't cutting it. I still feel as if I've never developed a real process/craft/technique. I have a bag of tricks that I defer to that I know CD's often like and I feel like that's what books me the jobs. Only thing is, it feels cheap to me. It doesn't feel artistic or fulfilling.
So, the prospect of a conservatory style program (especially in the UK) sounds really appealing: I have an addictive personality with this stuff, and being just inundated with the work every day of the week sounds perfect. Part of me also feels like I missed out on the college experience, so it could be nice to satisfy that feeling.
However, like I said, I'm worried about a lot. How in the hell I'll pay for it is one thing, but another is that while most of my classmates will be 21 - 22 when they leave the program, I'll be 32 - 33. To my 28 year old brain, that sounds oooooooooollllldddd. And the fact that I already have solid representation and have booked good jobs and seem to be on a solid career track makes me nervous to leave all that and go hang out in class for three years with a bunch of teenagers doing mask work. Let alone being seen as the *old guy* of the group.
Maybe I'm being too self-loathing about it all. I'd really love to hear from some of you who have taken a similar path. Aghhh!

2024.05.19 04:33 Ricedoes Kiwi Consultant looking at a change

Hey folks, I'm a Consultant in Geriatrics / Older People's Health, looking at a potential move from New Zealand to the UK. I'm a kiwi and have trained here, but after the small lifetime it took to get to Consultant, I feel like I need a change of scene for a couple of years. From what I can see, there appear to be lots of job openings, but I'm keen to hear your take on the opportunity cost, and perhaps any insights on where in the UK might be most interesting when it comes to leading work on dementias etc. Public, private or academic - i'm open to anything. Any help much appreciated :)

2024.05.19 04:29 GhanaGirlUK99 Looking for insight on what made you want leave the US?

Hello…I am posting this from a throwaway. I appreciate your insight as this has been a lengthy discussion in our family.
I see this sub as a "exit interview" as I am looking for insight.
My husband (39m) works in the automobile industry and has a chance to have a 3-5 year (possibly longer) assignment in the US. It would be a significant pay increase. If we take this opportunity, we plan to sell our house in the UK. Based upon appreciation we would clear approximately $300k USD, which we could use to buy a house in the US. We have two cars in the UK, which we would sell and buy new ones in the US. My husband also has now 30 days holiday leave in the UK.
I have lurked on this reddit for a long time as I suspected that a move to the US might be in the works. I feel that on the balance most comments I have read about moving to the US have not been frankly on the balance been positive compared to life in the UK and/or Europe.
I (35f) have one child (age 5) and we plan to have at least one more.
Here is what is holding me back:
I am note sure that after paying for health insurance, car insurance, etc. that the pay bump will really enable us to make more than what we are making in the UK, especially if I work as I have read that daycare can be between $3-5K/month in the US. Healthcare too. If we have another child, $200-40k for a hospital stay (vs. basically zero in the UK).
I also am diabetic and would need to see an endocrinologist. I have read that (I don’t really understand what this means) I may have a hard time finding one as there is a difference between in and out of network? Possibly a year waiting time to see a specialist in the US?
The food in the US. I am worried about the cost as well as the additives as I have read how hard it is to find food in the US without additives or highly processed ingredients.
I am a UK citizen, but of Ghanaian descent. As the job transfer would be in the south (South Carolina), how much is racism an issue? I have read about “sundown” towns and police violence towards minorities, which makes me nervous. From reading the comments here, it seems that racism is a thing in a lot of the US outside of urban areas.
I am a lapsed Episcopalian, but don’t go to church, so the idea of a religious centered country makes me nervous as well.
Schools? Will my child be taught actual science?
The gun violence in America is something I don't need to mention here.
I also have read that higher salaries in the US are a myth once healthcare costs, food costs, car insurance, etc. is figured in as well as the lack of any social safety net.
I am not keen on this move as I don’t think the quality of our life would be less expensive and better in the US vs. the UK. The suburbs don’t really have (from what I read) a sense of “community” once the hussle culture and superficiality is figured in. I am also worried about xenophobia and Americans not really knowing about the UK or Ghana.
I am trying however to keep an open mind and any insight from Americans or especially expats to the American south would be appreciated.
Edit: The city we would be moving to would be Greeneville, SC.
It looks nice, but doesn't say much about crime or if “walkability” is truly “walkable” by UKstandards.

2024.05.19 04:28 Dark-Star-82 Pets seem to stare at the cupboard space under my stairs. o.0

Hi, bit of an odd one here, just wondered what people thought of this,
My first cat in this house left us a couple of years ago, 18, a decent life and all. My house is a standard two up two down terraced house in the UK, 113yrs old, brick, nought special, and there has never been anything particularly odd about the place, I did some renovations which frankly have been on going to update various parts of the house and moved two doorways a few inches over on the downstairs to let me install sound proofing, noisy neighbours. Because of all the modifications I ended up removing two of the three doors so I just have the one between the living and front room rather than one on both and one on the under the stairs area where the fuse box is. Seemed pointless and made it easier to use as a coat space.
No sooner had I finished the job than I began to notice my cat Holly as she was, had taken to sitting upright and starring into the now open space under the stairs. With a curious frequency, I didn't think too much of it mind, cats are like this, dogs stare at walls for hours, the usual.
Well, I got another cat a couple of years before Holly left us. He does the same. Ok I thought, kind of weird but I paid it no mind and just left him to do so as and when as he does. I am sure it is just a coincidence I thought to myself.
About 18 months ago, my friend got a cute little dog, about 8 years old, a rescue, very quiet but happy and friendly with other animals so I was not worried of my cats when my friend brought his cute little dog around, my cats found the intrudespawn of Satan in their eyes somewhat disconcerting but no harm was done.
Curious thing is though, when he visits, he spends time sitting, staring, at the space, under the stairs. OK this is just getting surreal now I though to myself. I stacked some boxes in there and barring putting my coat on a hook or checking the electric meter I tried not to think too hard about it.
About 12 months ago, although I did not want a second cat, a friend of a friend was in trouble relationship wise and her cat had kittens and this one was the last that needed a home, she is a pint sized tuxedo cat that for whatever reason now fully grown has stayed the size of an older kitten but her temperament and complete lack of cowardice and self preservation are more than making up for her small stature. She is the greatest mouser I have ever known in 30 years of owning cats, unfortunately.
But you will never guess what she does and has done, ever since she got here? she doesn't just sit and stare at the space under the stairs, being the feline version of scrappy Doo, she actively climbs in there, through the boxes, and sits at the back, meowing. She was doing it earlier and it just put me in mind to scribble this up.
I haven't a clue, what the story is with underneath my stairs. I also have a feeling I probably don't want to know either. 😂

2024.05.19 04:12 LuckyDevil92-up6 AITA for cutting out my business partner

So this is an insane story that I've put a post on LegalAdviceUK to try get some advice from the legal eagles but that didn't really cover the full story. But having an informal chat in a comments section of this page about it and posting the legal ins and outs yesterday has given me some strength. And if I need to I will have the tub of cookie dough ice cream to comfort my big fat butt. So here we go a story which I've been trying to do for months without feeling nothing but shame and humiliation for allowing this parasite into my life enough to impact it like this.
So some backstory on my life in January 2023 I was working for Uber Eats as a delivery driver and had a Motorcycle accident. As a result I broke my foot, lost my insurance as Uber did everything they could to make sure it was invalidated to avoid responsibility for me. As a result I became jobless and homeless within a matter of days as I was already behind due to high insurance costs and low pay. I spent the next 9 months couch surfing and jumping from job to job until I finally settled working for a convenience store chain and leaving the city of Portsmouth for the town of Gosport across the way. I was settled with a roommate in October and I was doing well again.
During this I'd won a seat for myself into a semi major Poker tournament that I cashed in during August. I made £1300 for a weekend. In enters Mr S the person who will be the focus of this piece. He needed me to help him out with opening up some betting accounts for some online sports betting. He sweetened the deal by saying that he would invest in me to make my dream company come true, making a film business. He would invest £5000 into me to get me started which is all I needed because my plan was to work from home and get film clients and work up to an office. I too would invest £5000 over time. You see Mr S was a successful businessman in the community, a former sports personality and everyone loves this guy. Couldn't find someone to curse his name in a thousand miles I'm pretty sure. I had known him through my times as a poker player for nearly 12 years myself and I couldn't say I knew a bad thing about him. So I opened the accounts thinking nothing of it, then he asked to borrow money off me which I thought nothing of at the time as he said that he had it in cash and could pay me back in the morning as it was in cash not the bank apparently. He regularly did have this issue apparently because he worked in a cash heavy business (buying precious metals) and he was a regular at casinos. So I gave him the money. He paid me back some of it then made me wait another week to get the rest after I was calling him regularly to make him respond. This would be a recurring theme throughout the story.
After this issue was resolved I made a thought to push for the money to secure the investment. Mr S got the call and stated that we needed a business meeting in his office. So I asked to set up the business meeting which he regularly called to reschedule. After two months of this I got fed up of him brushing me off whilst he's borrowing my entire salary to gamble on and off when he ran out of his own money. So I changed the passwords on all the gambling sites to force him to take a meeting and pay me back the most recent amount he borrowed. I was naturally pissed off that this multi-millionaire was so reckless with his money that he was borrowing off of me and was constantly late paying me back. He paid me back and set up a meeting. He didn't make the meeting but assured me he was going to transfer me £3000 without one. He did not claiming his accounts were frozen by the government (I know I should have ran like a Gazelle from a Hyena at this point). Well I excused this behaviour because he reassured me everything would get sorted. This accounts frozen issue also became a recurring theme throughout the story too.
For a while Mr S didn't borrow any money off of me, he just used his own money (or some other poor sods), I kept asking him to invest into the business as I had opened a business account and I was investing my own money and borrowing money via a credit card. In total I put in £5000 whilst working a minimum wage job and using small amounts I'd earned through a bit of penny stock trading and poker, trying to get the money together. I worked 50-60 hours a week to pay for Christmas and invest in the business because of the fact that I didn't want to waste time. I set up business meetings, got business cards, bought equipment and got my friend who I will simply call Angel to work with me to put together a team. My friend Alf and a guy we found on LinkedIn I'll simply call J became our first team. We also found a lovely Graphics Artists online who I'll call Ally. Everyone was on freelance for now as we needed to get clients but we assembled the team. Mr S kept missing business meetings with clients that I set up for him to secure including three major ones that might have cost me a potential 6 figure contract that I spent two months setting up. Making County Football (Soccer for you Yanks) games on a Patreon page and YouTube for live streams. This mega pissed me off and Mr S reassured me he would get the contract back or getting a bigger one. I entrusted him with this task but as far as I can tell he never did anything for it.
On the night of his youngest child being born, whilst his wife was giving birth he spent his time playing online poker or sports betting, I know this because I had the transaction record and he even borrowed money off of me. He took a week to pay me £500 and I almost lost my brand new housing because of this. Thank goodness for my new friend and housemate being understanding of the situation and after this I put my foot down and said no more borrowing from me and if he asked again I would cut him off. I also insisted again that he should invest into the business. He made his excuses of the bank being frozen again and I told him to get his shit sorted out and invest because I'm getting annoyed waiting on him. I wanted to make an advert and without his money I couldn't do this.
So it comes January 2024 I lost my job with the convenience store after I stopped a shoplifter who'd assaulted me when I turned a corner. And by stop I mean used my big boy voice and scared the crap out of them. Don't know why they fired me for that but what do I care it freed me up and paid me £2000 to go away. I got a new job whilst also securing my first client. The client paid the first half of the money which they owed for the filming to be done and Mr S knowing this asked me to lend it to him for the purpose of gambling which I flatly shut down because it was staff wages for the project. When I told him this he said "I'm sure I'll have it back in time and if not they won't mind because they'll get experience." Yep you read that right he was willing to let the staff work for free so he could bet on horses. I told him that I would never put myself or him above my team when it comes to pay because we have no right to ask anyone to work for nothing when they are all multi talented individuals.
Angel was a video editor, animator, photographer, camera operator and lighting expert. She holds a Masters degree in film technology.
J was a camera operator who had worked on major TV documentary sets and was already taking a pay cut to work on this as an investment in the companies future. He held a BA degree.
Alf is a sound operator and musician with a masters degree in music.
Yep this guy wanted to not pay these guys so he could gamble recklessly. I semi caved though by giving him my personal money because he would repeatedly call me three times an hour over this. This was his tactic, begging and harassing me so he can get the money and then when I want the money back ignore and excuse the debt for a week. He regularly said he'd have it back in a day and it would take a week. He gave me £200 extra on top of this debt and said to put it into the business account to help pay for an advert. I did it and yeah that apparently was all I was going to need to make and distribute an advert in his mind. In reality it would barely cover the graphics and music for the advert.
Finally my old debts were catching up with me in March 2024 and I got myself an IVA (Individual Voluntary Arrangement) to protect myself and the company as a debt management option. This is because of the fact that old bills, credit cards and loans that I'd taken out were catching up with me that I expected to pay off by now. Which I might have done, had Mr S not been screwing around with the investment. In this process I had to shut down all the gambling sites to comply with the IVA. I called Mr S and informed him to which he promptly told me he was no longer going to invest in my business if I won't let him gamble and risk my IVA. According to him he was going to invest when he won £10000 and was going to give me half of the money as his investment forgetting he'd already won that and then some 2 weeks prior and I knew it. I called him out on this fact and told him to pony up or bugger off because he'd wasted 8 months of mine and my teams lives promising his investment and failing on every level. He exploded on me telling me no one talks to him like this, how dare I describe him as a con artist and a fraud. He demanded his £200 back which I flat out refused as I didn't have it. I spent it paying the Angel the money I owed her because she did extra work on the editing that I failed to secure the money for from either Mr S or the Client. She offered to work for less but I flat out refused that offer because it was my mistake and my problem to deal with.
Over the next 6 weeks now I've been harassed every few days over £200 to be paid back which I'm now refusing to pay because screw him. He lied to me for 8 months and as far as I'm concerned he stole money out of the company and then wants me to pay him more money to buy him out and disregard the team members so he can get his money when he's a multimillionaire and the team are like me on minimum wage and freelancing. So AITA for calling him a thief and con artist whilst refusing to pay him a penny so I can prioritise fixing the damage he had caused? If he'd had invested in the business the way he said he would and it was a normal falling out I probably would pay him out as the business would have been more likely on solid ground with an advert made and a chance for the business to thrive. But this was my lot. I've since been told I'm a worthless person because I won't pay him back and take his calls. I'm a terrible friend for letting such a small issue like me trying to sort out my life at the expense of Mr S's gambling life.
As it stands I haven't paid Mr S back, I still owe a small amount to Angel but am paying her back and I've taken a new job at my local Maccies to insure I do. I'm still looking for more clients to do film work with to get my team into the swing of it. Hopefully we do get more work as I have a wonderful team and I want them to get work with me and make a very successful future for us all. I'm looking into getting a start up business grant from the UK government as well so we can go forward properly as well.
So AITA for cutting Mr S out of the business, trusting him at all and risking so much on his word or for not paying him back the £200?
Click here if you are interested in seeing our first clients advert. I apologise to the great Lady Charlotte Dobre for plugging my work on her channel but I would love to have people view my teams wonderful work and hopefully get more work for the future here in Hampshire UK. Please DM me for details to hire us too we intend to make music videos, business adverts and commissioned films.
For all you reading/listening this short novel I thank you and I wish you well. I hope I get more business soon and I want everyone to know that we will be posting up Patreon work soon covering Entitled People and Neckbeard Stories from Reddit along with Documentaries that we might be making with Sky TV, English Heritage and also a planned comedy show in the style of a budget John Oliver Last Week Tonight. Again sorry for plugging myself Lady Charlotte Dobre and I send you love and respect because your videos make my days feel better when depression is biting my ass.
PS - That Ice Cream Tub didn't survive.

2024.05.19 03:02 Lower-Elk8395 Question about special circumstances...

Hi! I wanted to start by saying that I am a US citizen, and my boyfriend of almost 7 years is a UK citizen. We were originally unsure of which country to settle, but for now the US is the only option.
The reason for this is because I have stage 4 cancer, for the second time...my chances of remission are still good, but its expected to come back for round 3. We realized its time to prioritize settling down, but I'm currently landlocked due to my medical treatments.
I know its a long shot, and I honestly feel bad for asking, but if we officially got married right now, I could lose my medical insurance and we need that for me so, so badly. We are really looking into other options.
Have there ever been cases where somebody looking for residency in the states has had their case improved on or sped along because of the medical crisis of a loved one? Or are there any other ways for him to get a longer-term residency?
He has a job, he has savings, he has a place he can stay as soon as he gets here, he can stay with me. We have people willing to give him gainful employment. We just need a way to help him be here, and it can be hard to find out where to start...I have the government website, but if anybody can help me get more resources to help flesh these out, it would mean the world to me. Thank you in advance!

2024.05.19 01:59 SecretCortezSibling3 Comedy/drama about a hs girl? (Specific, ik)

I think this movie came out in the 2010s or later?? This girl decides that she wants to focus more on boys I think? Literally the first scene is her imagining the boys in her hs and all the different types of them lol. She eventually tries to get a job and is denied and then gets a job as an interviewer and interviews this older male singer (he's probably like 20s), they become friends and she gets famous somehow and starts to change and let it all get to her head. Eventually one of her friends? Or her family? I think? Gives her a reality check and leaves her for awhile, I think they were roommates and friends, it's a guy I believe. At the end she apologizes and gives up the fame gimmick and then talks to the singer guy again and he says if she was older they'd probably be together (she was crushing on him) and they remain friends. It's a UK movie and the main girl is a heavier set white girl with bushy brows and kinda buckteeth. I think it's like "a guide to.." or "how to.." and pink or red on the front?? I know this is summary is all over the place

2024.05.19 01:58 cashhm3re I think I applied to a fake job and I don’t know what to do

I know I have made some extremely stupid decisions here and I regret it, but I would really appreciate some advice.
I have applied to many jobs and I’ve lost track of them. Recently, I have received an interview (I’ve gotten all rejections so far) from a “relatively large brand” to work as a female kiosk worker in a well known shopping centre. The job was a completely normal retail job which had a slightly above average salary and the job description seemed fine. The email that I received stated that they were “impressed by my experience and qualifications” even though I have very little experience and they were willing to accommodate to my needs and provide info on the interview (which I found odd). The interview itself was held in their office, which is located in a dodgy council estate and that’s kinda where I knew I messed up.
Here is some info about the company:
The company itself seems decently big and has many locations internationally, but there is no information on them. They have 0 reviews on trust pilot, their products are really over priced (selling diffusers for £700💀) and there’s like 3 google reviews for their UK branch which doesn’t make sense as they claim to be a leading brand. I searched for the kiosk in the shopping centre and they didn’t have one, so after discovering all this, I kindly declined the interview.
Now the problem right now is my CV, which has all my info on it. I was taught to put my address, number and university in my CV and I wasn’t really aware those details weren’t needed (I know it was really naive and dumb of me to put it in). Does this sound like some sort of trafficking scheme and what can they possibly do with the info stated above?
Deep down I am hoping this is a genuine company as the emails I have received were professional + it was their company’s email address and I have been given the managers phone number. But I am feeling really paranoid

2024.05.19 01:27 prettyvariable Need help

So I (27F) am a refugee from Ukraine, my parents died and I came to UK to stay with my relatives. I was told that they would have me for 6months after that time I would be on my own.
I didn’t apply for any benefits, no social housing.
Afterwards, I was lucky to find a room to rent in London with no references (though the place is dodgy). It took me 2 months to land a job as a receptionist (minimum wage). I have a BA in History and worked remotely for an IT company from Ukraine but couldn’t land similar job in UK.
After staying in London for a few months I wasn’t able to save any money as well as I got into overdraft debt (£2k) - my salary is not enough to cover the rent, groceries, clothes, household items etc. I literally got clinically depressed and have to take antipsychotic meds now.
I would appreciate any advice on what you would do in my situation.

2024.05.19 01:04 RamenGuy100 What jobs are worth considering?

Hi, I'm a 17 year old in the UK who's just been given a reality check on how bad things could get if he stays in his current plan on getting into a med school (due to reasons that are irrelevant to this post)
So, I'm thinking of looking into finance, but I'm not totally sure as to what degrees or jobs are worth looking at.
In terms of what I want, good pay/good groath curve and consistent work hours are probably the two things I most desperately want. Everything else isn't as big a deal.
I'm also wondering what sort of work experience would be good to get? I do have some work experience/an internship with JP Morgan coming up in the summer so I have that going for me but otherwise my university application is quite bleak so I'm not sure what else I can do since I need to apply to universities by October ish.
Are there any resources or anything else that people would recommend using? Any advice would be really helpful

2024.05.19 01:04 SchrodingersMinou Rabies FAQ - Please read before posting!

Before you post a question to this subreddit, please read the following points. I know, it's a lot to read, but 99% of you will get answers to your questions here. These points contain verified, accurate FACTS as verified through the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO).
1. Is this a bat bite?
Bat bites cannot be identified from a photo. No one, not even a doctor or a bat biologist, can identify a bat bite from a photo. If you think you might have bat bite, ask yourself: Have you seen a bat in your home? Did you sleep outdoors where a bat might have bitten you? Did you pick up a bat in your hand? If you answer no, it's HIGHLY UNLIKELY you were bitten by a bat. Again, bat bites cannot be identified from a photo.
2. Can I get rabies from interacting with an animal? Can I get rabies from touching something? What about if a drop of liquid falls on me? Can I get rabies from contaminated food or water? Can I get rabies from a person?
No. YOU CAN ONLY GET RABIES VIA DIRECT CONTACT WITH A RABID ANIMAL. This means being bitten or scratched by a rabid animal. Rabies is transmitted via the saliva of an infected animal in the late stages of the disease, when the virus is being shed in the saliva by the host animal. The rabies virus dies almost immediately once it’s outside the body. You can’t get rabies from touching something a rabid animal touched. You can’t get rabies from your pet meeting a rabid animal and then bringing it home to you. You can’t get rabies from touching roadkill. You can’t get rabies from something falling on you. You can’t get rabies from touching or kissing someone who has been vaccinated. You can’t get rabies from touching something wet. You can’t get rabies from touching any surface whatsoever, even if you have a cut on your body or you touch your eye/nose/mouth afterwards. Getting rabies from touching an animal and then touching your eye/nose/mouth is theoretically possible, but this has never happened to anyone in recorded history.
3. I found a suspicious mark on my body but I didn’t find a bat in my house. Did a bat sneak into my house and bite me without me noticing, and then sneak back out?
Bats are NOT invisible or ninjas. If you wake up in the morning with a mark on your body, it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY to be a bat bite unless you find a bat in your house. If a bat gets in your house, you will see it. They are not good at finding their way out on their own. It’s very unlikely that a sober, alert, adult human would not notice being bitten by a bat. Finding little marks on your body is not unusual and that is no reason to assume an invisible bat attacked you.
4. I saw a bat near me. Or I heard a bat. Or I saw something that might have been a bat, but it didn’t touch me. Did a bat bite me without me noticing?
Bats cannot fly past you and bite you in mid-flight. That is physically impossible. A bat must LAND on you, hold on to you with their tiny fingers, and then bite you. After biting you, they must then push off of you to take flight again. Bats can be small, but they're not invisible or imperceptible. If you would notice a big bug landing on you and biting you, then you would notice a bat doing it too. If a bat makes physical contact with you, there is a possibility that it may have scratched you, and rabies shots are recommended unless you are in a country free of bat rabies. If you find a bat in your house and you are not in a country free of bat rabies, you should catch it and submit it for rabies testing; if you can’t do that, you should get rabies shots; if you have small children, they should get rabies shots.
5. An animal touched me, licked me, or sneezed on me. Could I get rabies from this?
You cannot get rabies from a wound that doesn’t break the skin. Rabies can only get into your body through an opening in your body: a scratch or bite. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, you should wash the area with soap and water for 5 minutes. If it does not bleed at all, you may not have broken the skin and could be in the clear. You can test this by putting alcohol on the abrasion to see if it stings.
6. Can I get rabies from an animal that has current rabies vaccinations? Can my pet get rabies if it has current rabies vaccinations?
No. You cannot get rabies from an animal that has current rabies shots. If you are bitten or scratched by someone’s pet, ask the owner for proof of rabies vaccination, like a rabies tag on the collar. Take a photo or copy of these records and call their vet to verify them. If the shots are current, you're not at risk of rabies infection. If the pet owner cannot provide this proof of vaccination, contact your animal control department or rabies management / health department to file a "Bite Report". If you are in the USA, you can find a list of those agencies here: https://www.cdc.gov/rabies/resources/contacts.html
7. Can I get rabies from my pet, or from a friend or neighbor’s pet?
You may not need to get rabies shots if you can observe the animal that attacked you for two weeks. If you are bitten or scratched by a pet that is not vaccinated for rabies, the standard protocol is to quarantine the animal in an animal shelter or veterinarian's office for 10-14 days. If you were attacked by someone else’s pet and that is not possible, you can observe the animal for 14 days. If it doesn’t get sick and/or die of rabies, then you are not at risk of rabies and do not need rabies shots. If the animal is healthy in 14 days, IT DOES NOT HAVE RABIES and neither do you. Since most animals in the late stages of rabies typically die in about 48 hours, this is a very cautious timeframe to observe.
8. Can I get rabies from a bug, bird, lizard, or frog? Can I get rabies from a possum, or a rat or mouse?
No. Only mammals (furry animals) can carry rabies. Reptiles, amphibians, insects, and birds can’t carry rabies. Bats are one of the most common rabies carriers in the US, although less than half of 1% of all bats will ever get rabies. In the USA, the next most common species are raccoons, skunks, and foxes. Outside of the USA, dogs, cats, and other animals have been known to spread the rabies virus. The least common mammals include Virginia opossums, rodents (rats and mice), rabbits or hares, and squirrels. Globally, the #1 risk of rabies is dog bites.
9. Is there a risk of rabies in my area? Can I get rabies in India, or the UK?
To learn about rabies statistics for your area, Google your state or country's name and the phrase 'current rabies statistics'. These websites will tell you how many rabid animals have been found in your area and what species. They should also tell you who to call to report a bite. Some parts of the world are rabies-free and there is no rabies or risk of rabies infection. The UK (and most of western Europe) is free of rabies in most animals except for bats, which is rare. India has a high rabies risk from dogs and other mammals, but rabies is very rare in bats in India and has only been found in bats in a couple areas in Nagaland.
10. I was vaccinated for rabies. Does that mean I am protected for life and will never need to worry about it again?
No. Previously vaccinated people still get boosters if they are re-exposed to rabies. Your rabies titer can be high for a few months or for many years, but it is assumed that you are protected for at least three months after getting your initial shots. If you are bitten by animal and it has been less than 90 days since your last shot, you don’t need to do anything. If it has been more than 90 days since your last shot, you would still need post-exposure booster shots IF you are directly exposed to an animal that could be rabid. You do not need to go through the entire series of shots again; you only need booster shots.
· For more information about rabies and rabies shots, see the CDC website here: https://www.cdc.gov/rabies/index.html
· If you are in the USA here is a link to the state and local rabies contacts. USA State & Local Rabies Contacts
11. I was vaccinated for rabies but I did not receive HRIG (Human Rabies Immunogloblin). Why? Is that OK?
HRIG is sometimes not given if there is no visible wound or if you were bitten/scratched in a location that is hard to inject. For instance, it would be hard to inject HRIG into your ear. If you have no visible wound, then there is no way to tell where HRIG should be injected. If you have more questions about this, ASK YOUR DOCTOR.
12. I got rabies shots but I have questions about the specific medical care I received. Why did the doctor give me the care I received? I’m immunocompromised; do I need extra shots? Will my medication interact with the vaccine?
Ask your doctor questions about the specific medical care you received. People on the internet cannot answer those questions. A doctor’s job is to treat patients and explain their care to them so it is OK to ask follow-up questions even after you leave the office.
13. I am in a country that is not the US, or I am traveling. Why did doctors in my country give me a different schedule of shots than the ones recommended by the CDC or the WHO? Why did doctors in two different countries tell me two different shot schedules? Will the shots work?
Yess. Rabies protocols vary by country. The CDC guidance is specific to the USA, and the WHO guidance is a recommendation for all countries. Some countries give different numbers of shots on different days. That is OK. The schedules all work as long as you stick to them and finish the series. To find more information about a country’s rabies shot schedule, google the name of the country + rabies vaccination + regimen or protocol or schedule.
14. I waited a long time before I got rabies shots. Or I drank a beer after I got vaccinated, or I took an aspirin. Or a doctor gave me tetanus shots at the same time. Will the rabies shots still work?
Yes. Rabies vaccines are 100% effective if you get them before the virus reaches your brain and symptoms start, which usually takes 3 weeks to one year. For more info about symptoms, see FAQ #17. If you have more questions about your medical treatment, ASK YOUR DOCTOR.
15. I think I have health anxiety and I can’t stop thinking about rabies all the time. How can I get help for this?
See this link. The automod can be summoned to share this information with a comment that includes the word “helpbot."
16. Someone is asking questions in the sub that I think are super dumb. Should I tell them that?
No. Please do not be rude or impatient. There is a real difference between a legitimate rabies scare and Persistent Health Anxiety (PHA), a subset of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). OCD and anxiety are real diseases that can have physical symptoms, and there are treatments for them that many people don’t know how to access. Both conditions are terrifying and life-altering, and both conditions deserve support. In this group, we support people who ask for help and we applaud them for finding the courage to do so. We will be kind, patient, respectful, and do our best to provide emotional support to anyone who seeks help here. I will be posting a separate FAQ to address the health anxiety issue. All posts and/or replies that are in any way unkind, impatient, or rude will be immediately removed and the author may be temporarily or permanently banned from this group. Be nice!!
17. I feel sick. Do I have rabies?
If you feel sick, see a doctor. You may have another disease, including anxiety, which can have physical symptoms. We cannot diagnose you over the internet. See a doctor.
The rabies virus generally has an incubation period of 3 weeks to 1 year from the date of exposure. If you believe you are experiencing symptoms before 3 weeks after exposure, that is not rabies. If you think you are experiencing symptoms more than 1 year after exposure, it is almost certainly not rabies. if you have not been exposed to a rabid animal and you believe you are experiencing rabies symptoms, you are not infected and are most likely experiencing anxiety. the prodromal stage lasts for a few days to a month and the acute neurologic stage lasts for a few days to a week; if you have symptoms that last longer than this, you do not have rabies.
Rabies symptoms only begin when the virus reaches the brain. It MUST reach the brain and produce SEVERE NEUROLOGICAL symptoms before it reaches the throat and salivary glands. This means that your sore throat is NOT caused by rabies unless you also have a severe fever, are experiencing loss of consciousness, paralysis, and seizures.
Also, rabies symptoms do not go away until death. You don't have a fever and then the fever goes away for the next symptoms. Every symptom stacks on top of the other symptoms. If you are experiencing 1 out 10 symptoms, it's NOT RABIES. Rabies is not mild. It's SEVERE in every way. If you are experiencing rabies symptoms you will need to be hospitalized within the first 8 hours of symptoms.
IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO GET VACCINATED UNTIL SYMPTOMS START, but only get vaccinated if you were attacked by a rabid animal. Waking up with a mystery scratch is not a rabies exposure.
Rabies symptoms are as follows, IN THIS ORDER:
Prodromal Stage:
• Extreme Fever
• Extreme Headache
Acute neurologic phase:
• Visual Disturbances, Hallucinations
• Delirium, Confusion
• Tremors, Seizures, Repetitive Uncontrollable Movements
• Fading In and Out of Consciousness
• Light Sensitivity, Sensitivity to Wind / Moving Air
• Partial Paralysis of Extremities, Paralysis of One or Both Legs or Arms
• Excessive Salivation, combined with the inability to swallow AT ALL, not even your own saliva which causes excessive drooling
• Inability to Swallow - NOT SORE THROAT - Inability to eat or drink, or swallow your own saliva production
• Extreme Aversion to sight or sound of water, food, or drink, AKA hydrophobia
• Coma
Without extreme medical intervention, which usually is an induced coma, these symptoms will progress to death very rapidly. Most patients who reach the point of excessive salivation and hydrophobia die within 12-24 hours without intervention.
IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING THESE SYMPTOMS, CALL 911 AND GET TO A HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY. IF YOU CAN REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE, YOU ARE NOT EXPERIENCING RABIES SYMPTOMS. PEOPLE WITH ACTIVE RABIES INFECTIONS CANNOT TYPE, TALK, OR DEBATE WHETHER OR NOT THEY ARE SICK. IF YOU CAN READ THIS AND REPLY, IT'S NOT RABIES.

2024.05.19 01:02 GhanaGirlUK99 [IWantOut] 35F UK -> US

Hello…I am posting this from a throwaway. I appreciate your insight as this has been a lengthy discussion in our family.
It looks nice, but doesn't say much about crime or if “walkability” is truly “walkable” by UK standards.
