2024.06.02 06:00 AutoModerator Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists and New Residents)
This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.
READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our
world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed.
HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the
highest hotel prices in Europe. The city is deliberately
trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.
TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at
/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.
WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.
WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on
/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.
WE PROBABLY DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT but you can get some good tips from
this thread from a sex worker.
DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.
Here is what's on at the major venues this week.

2024.06.02 04:26 Next-Honeydew4130 Never go to a hybridizer who is retiring. Just don’t.
| First of all those hybrids that are so lovely that you want to buy? Not for sale. In fact will probably never BE for sale. And the fact that he is retiring from selling? Half his stuff will be impossible to find!!! Do. Not. Go. But also thank you Mr. Van Liere for your introductions in the high plains, please keep at it!! 😁 submitted by Next-Honeydew4130 to Irises [link] [comments] |
2024.06.02 03:40 theprintman Alberta parks Westfalia camping
New to camping in a Westy and new to camping in the Rockies.
Wondering how the site types work with something like a Westfalia - can I book a "tent only" site with vehicle access for this type of unit or does it fall under the same jurisdiction as trailers and RVs? The website doesn't seem super clear especially since a van that I sleep in doesn't seem any different than parking an SUV and pitching a tent or one of those roof tents.
Any insight from fellow campers would be greatly appreciated!

Weather
alerts here. The alert
at the time of this writing. Do check the forecast, as conditions can and do change.
Via the IMO: "If the forecast comes true, it will be a very unusual weather event for this time of year, both in terms of wind strength and low temperatures with precipitation." The alerts also state that
"travelling can be hazardous, especially for vehicles sensitive to wind" (my note: Especially tall camper vans, RVs) and that
"people planning outdoor activities and hikes are advised to review their plans and monitor weather forecasts and warnings." Take this seriously. Have your plans B & C ready.
RÚV write up states that it could possibly worsen to an orange alert in some areas.

2024.06.01 22:44 HandyMan131 Tips for Van Build with small kids?
My wife and I live in Colorado with a 4 year old and 1 year old. We want to build a van for long weekend road trips and van camping. Likely never more than a week at a time.
We have a lot of experience with camper trailers, but this will be our first van. Any tips to make it work better with the kiddos?
We plan to use the biggest Ford Transit as our platform.

2024.06.01 19:47 LeftyFireman Can anyone else, like, SMELL bad intentions?
I dunno why but in social interactions, for some reason, I can always tell if someone’s got it out for me in most circumstances, especially when they don’t want me to know. Is this a superpower??
For instance, one time I successfully predicted someone was going to rob us when I walked past them; we were in a target parkinglot in broad daylight and we walked past this van with two people sitting out of the trunk looking at us and I felt like a switch flick in my brain. Nobody else noticed shit, but I was very distracted and kept thinking we were going to get robbed by this rough looking man & woman. We kept walking and every couple feet I glanced out of the corner of my eye to see if they were still there and on the second glance they weren’t then they were in front of us and the woman was waving a very big knife yelling at us (which was dumb because we could’ve just ran the opposite direction away from the store but I guess no one wanted to chance it; this bitch could’ve been fast enough to catch me), and then she was pistol whipped by a shopper who walked up behind her & her boyfriend ran off like a bat out of hell & took the van… crazy memory. But I remember I could smell their bad intentions, it was like it was coming off their face.
JOB INTERVIEWS man does this help me in job interviews because I can always know how it’s going. If I let the mask slip a bit and they ‘take offense’ I always know immediately. If I say or admit something during an interview that’s a deal breaker for them, I can tell instantly, so I always end bad ones on my terms with something creative.
Dates kinda but not really. I guess the scary part would be if someone had bad intentions and then wanted to take me home still.
Over the PHOOOONE it works too! It’s something about their voice and face but the voice is something different entirely. We didn’t exactly evolve to speak in the same manner we evolved to use our facial expressions to communicate so I can only guess there’s some void space where psychology meets linguistics and language where people use a different tone or fervent fiction when they have bad intentions for someone but don’t want them to know. Shitty sales calls for instance are clear as day. Like
this scene with the cold calling would
never happen to me.
Sometimes I come off as rude if I suddenly cut interactions short if I don’t feel diplomatic about someone who is trying to hide bad intentions that I can smell off them. That’s what it is. The lack of genuineness is so wildly easy to pick up, and when I cut off interactions or people from my life that had it out for me but wanted to interact with me (!!!) they always get so mad. They are MALDING!

2024.06.01 18:21 Cult-O-Cthulhu [WTS] Pelikan M400, Visconti Van Gogh, Platinum 3776, Sailor Compass
Main Verification -
https://imgur.com/a/zrgKDqK Letting go of a few pens I never reach for. Pricing included CONUS shipping. Open to international sales, buyer pays shipping. All sub rules apply, comment before PM, PayPal G&S only.
Platinum 3776 SF - C? Condition. Normal wear and tear (micro-micro scratches) from use on cap and barrel. Nib is in excellent condition, a lovely, bouncy soft-fine. I cannot for the life of me find the original converter. Happy to include a gold trim one, mild purple staining from R&K Scabiosa but fully functional. Orginally purchased this pen years back on PenSwap. Box/papers/cartridge included. $110 OBO, CONUS
https://imgur.com/a/viEia0S Pelikan M400 Broad - B Condition. My first Pelikan, this was purchased a few years back and babied. The broad nib is JUICY and showcases inks marvelously. Not sure where the original box landed but will include the roll/pouch. $165 (if you really want a Pelikan box I can ship it in a spare M800 box for an additional $10)
https://imgur.com/a/LuLBs2i Visconti Van Gogh Wheatfield with Crows Medium - D Condition. Pen itself is in perfect shape with no scratches/dings/cracks, but the nib came with the worst baby's bottom that I had to work out. Writes like a dream now, but D rating due to the nib work. Will ship in original box with ink. Box is slightly damaged from a move, ink is full/unused. $125 OBO
https://imgur.com/a/1ABqces Sailor Compass Green Medium Fine - $15 OBO, or will throw in for free with purchase of any other pen. Not a fan of the steel nib or feedback. Kind of just want it out of my life. The nib has a scratch near the slit, came to me that way and I never loved the pen enough to be bothered by it.
https://imgur.com/a/acoKAOZ If you need more details or pictures please PM. The tiny terror should be napping and I'll be readily available the next hour or two, otherwise I might not get back to you before tomorrow. Thanks all!

2024.06.01 17:44 Sprattles Portable Solar Panel for Yeti 3000x?
I have been trying to research portable solar panels for a couple days now to use while car camping with our Yeti 3000x battery. I have no knowledge of panels, so I think I’ve confused myself more than learned anything. Of course we could buy the Goal Zero panels but they are crazy expensive and I’m sure there’s another alternative. I have a couple questions I’m hoping someone can help out with:
• The specs for the 3000x say it can charge with: 150W Max (14-50V, up to 10A). I saw
this portable panel recommended, but it only says up to 12V, so I am trying to confirm that it would NOT work for the 3000x, since the 3000x requires a minimum of 14V?
•What solar panels other than goal zero BouldeNomad 200 would you recommend for the Yeti 3000x?
Thanks, I appreciate the help. I’ve searched Reddit high and low and not everything has been applicable to my situation. A lot of the threads for solar panels with the 3000x have been for RVs or Camper Vans, whereas we are going to be car camping (or using it at home in an emergency) and need portable panels.

2024.06.01 17:15 kingofaustin Is Rav 4 big enough to camp in / sleep in?
My current beach camper (awesome AWD astro van) is just a terrible gas guzzler to drive the 500 mile round trips I do lots of weekends to go from where I live to go camp on the beach. I've been waiting for good phev options but it seems they're not going to materialize (lots of cool ones like Ford ranger phev and hybrid transit connect are going to be only outside the u.s.).
However I realize the Rav 4 Prime and hybrid get pretty sick fuel economy, and AWD is great for me on the beach.
Are Rav4s big enough to sleep in? Not too confined inside?

2024.06.01 17:03 RecipeValuable7149 A Last Note (The formula of what not to do when parenting).
idk why it's so hard for them to understand that the world isn't easy anymore and trying to live alone when your just touching the adult life is hard, not to many people i know are suicidal or truly suicidal like me, that feeling of not wanting to exist is spot on because the burden and agony that comes with it is stressful and indescribable but the you both made me and god smile with the urge that you feel, he wants you to come back with him only if your heart desires it, i understand spirituality and the way people feel about it because i myself used to be spiritual, thinking about my energy and the ways i can store it and grow in life. But i learned that the bigger picture is not how we feel here, or what we do here, just my opinion but i feel like no matter how much i try to make ends meet with myself whether its spiritually or materialistically, it won't amount to the joy god will give when the world comes to an end. i recently got let go from my job because of sales/hours issue, i dont see why my mother cant understand how life goes, its like shes been babied so much throughout life that she doesnt understand the financial struggle of being a lone, she might understand what it is to be broke but its different when your broke and 48 barely willing to make a change for yourself... its like shes so comfortable living for herself when she barely does that, she can claim that working with my stepdad is her income but lets be honest, they havent been to work just as long as ive been out of vans for, my mother never tried to find her own income after my grandmothers passing, in fact i feel like shes tried to use me as an outlet or opportunity to fill the financial gap, it just felt like my whole time at nike was a manipulative scam, i didnt gain any support as in going to work, which is fine, but the least i expected was emotional support and the moment that i told you that i was suicidal you didn nothing about it, all you said was "thats not my problem", you can try to use the lil two sundays at unity as your way of "helping" but lets be fucking foreal that shit ended after two weeks before you went back to the same attitude, unresponsive blocked off mother you are, always giving me attitude on the first response, i don't even gotta ask for anything just a simple hello mother would give me "the fuck you want" face, now some people also go through this but its different when you dont get periodic times of love, its like i cant even remember the last time i felt her love or even said i love you, i know i cant say it, its hard to love a person that treats you like shit, regardless of my age, like i said going into "adulthood" as it is wasnt easy, and you did nothing to help that, i cant take away the lessons of insurance the importance of car, thats great and all, but off rip when i graduated my problem was not money YOU SEEN ME MAKE MONEY THAT WHOLE SUMMER UNTIL NOVEMEMBER, YOU KNEW MY HOURS WERE GETTING LOW, i wasn't dealing with money issues i was dealing with mental issues*,* i felt like i had nobody there for me, and even before i graduated during my last semester it just felt like you disconnected with me when you did with alisha, but it didnt get as bad as when grandma passed, THAT was your changing point, you like to claim that i've changed when i didn't even change towards you, i was just experiencing things as an adult, but as a mother you cannot deny their were many times that i couldn't look to you for help, grandmas passing was the biggest turning point in our relationship, you were in pr for almost two months while i was still trying to work find a better job, and the moment i found somebody that i actually felt love from you take as some type of joke, like it didnt matter, ok yes whatever the decision of flying to memphis may seem dumb now, but it wasnt before, you actually played af actor into ruining our relationship because she didnt like your judginess, and your attitude, which is funny because i see how she felt... during my time at nike was hell, i already felt pressured from my managers because of others people work, always being told im not doing enough or im not working enough when im covering up tasks for other ppl, after i left nike in the summer you tried your lil unity gig but the act ended quickly before you went back to your regular ways its like you didnt see the progress i was tryna make so you took it as idgaf, when you never fully tried to understand what it was i was trying to achieve, then you like to throw the ion study claim around when you i actually ahd big interest in goin back to school and it wasnt even for my personal reasons its bc you wanted to kick me out because i didnt have "interest in working" when its not that i didnt have interest in working i didnt ahve interest in living, i didnt feel any type of love from ANYBODY for the longest barely anybody texted kept in touch with me, i fasho count on my fingers a couple of people that tried to reach out, but it never felt genuine, i didnt need a conversation of false reassurance, i needed true relationships, connections, true memories makers righ by me and one person i can count on was jacob 100%, my mother always made "comments" like "oh, go ask that fat ass for food or a ride, dont ask me" when its like damn, all i want it some love, you like to say i spend my monery on weed and solely weed, hypocrite much? i dont see you spending your money (if it even is your money) on nothing but food, cigarettes and weed that you claim you dont have but every time i step outside i see you tryna hide your lil J, ITS EVEN GOTTEN TO THE POINT THAT YOU HIDE FOOD, UTENSILS, POTS, IT DONT MATTER WHAT, IT, ISSS, you hide everything in your room, i just cant live like this anymore, living with the thought that i got nobody there for me not even my parents, i cherish all the online relationships or the close by ones i consider "small" i really wish i had another chance at life with a better foundation, so that i could actually see through the lens of somebody that enjoys life, i always ask myself what am i living for? i live with parents who barely acknowledge me emotionally, i live with a sister who once didnt care about my well being just the money, but turned into a person that criticizes my well being, uses my mothers words against me, its like you took her side from the jump and like to play the middleman when its convenient, i cant even speak on my father bc rs that man tried a lil more than my og and for that i respect him because i now understand how hard it is to live alone as a man, to live alone as a man with hypocrites that critize you on a daily, i just dont kno what to do anymore, rs i dont wanna be here i dont wanna work i dont wanna do anything but just be at peace, if i had the chance to rewind time and slap that apple out of eves hand i would, to anyone who read this for just do one thing for me, stop the senseless killings stop the materialistic bs just stop everything and look around, connect wit those whos around you and rlly connect wit yo kids, cuz if you dont they gon end up like me and every other soul that felt the same way, keep jesus by yo side and i don't say that in a cliche way, really believe in him and don't be like me because i wouldn't say i lost my faith, but i lost my patience and it hurts, because i was on a big journey to full restoration with christ, but the demons over came me, they got the best of what i had in life and ripped it, and i failed in trusting that god would help me, i have thoughts everyday of what would happen if i take my own life, i hear stories that they way you take your life is what you would repeatedly do in hell, in a muslims perspective suicide is heavily forbidden so icl yea, i'm scared, because i'm still breaking to commandments i'm just not taking some else life, idk this whole thing even typing it is confusing, nobody can understand the pain and confusion of ones whos suicidal, to my suicidal friends out there i feel yo pain, and i really wish i didn't, i wish nun of us did
enjoy these tracks ive made.

2024.06.01 16:39 homelesshyundai Looking at getting a 07-12 Sienna XLT in the $5-8k range. What should I look out for?
I've been browsing local listings for Siennas (near Detroit) and before going to look at any I was wondering if there is anything specific for these vehicles that I should be on the lookout for. I'm a bit nervous since despite owning 14 different vehicles over the years, this will be the first one that cost more than $1200.
Are there any mileage ranges that I should be concerned about? Despite reading anecdotal stories online about these vans running 300k+ miles, I've yet to see one for sale with more than about 230k miles. Most of the vans around here are have around 150-200k, would 200k be a complete deal breaker if the price is good? Does it make any difference if it's AWD vs FWD in that regard?
Are there any spots that tend to start to rust out that I should keep an eye out for? I know with Astro vans the front core support would rot from the inside out and you could tell from some fairly minor exterior marks that it was severe inside, not sure if there is anything like that on these Toyotas.
How about the drivetrain, anything to be aware of with the v6 or transmission?
Since I have the scanner, does anyone know of any good toyota specific OBD diagnostic apps that could help me verify everything on the car works? If there is something like a toyota version of "forscan" that would be a godsend.
Is the adaptive cruise control something worth having? I've yet to see a single listing mentioning it despite it being an option and toyota's vin decoder isn't exactly clear on any of the vehicles I've checked for it's availability. With that said, are there options that are more sought after? AWD seems to be kind of rare around here but despite that the AWD vans don't seem to be priced any differently.
Are there trim levels below the XLT that can be optioned similarly that I should look out for? Mostly I'm looking for any of the driver comfort options, leather seats, nicer gauge cluster, etc. Since I'll be the only one in the thing 99.9% of the time, I could care less about back seat entertainment. Basically the only thing I can't live without would be having the v6 and being 07+.
Thanks in advance for any help/advice!

2024.06.01 15:32 Redeemed_Expert9496 Midsized Vans would be great in North America
Recently, I did some travelling and had the opportunity to check out several cars not sold in North America. One of the more interesting ones was a 2016 Volkswagen Transporter Passenger van. This van was simply amazing. It could comfortably seat eight adults and still had plenty of cargo space behind the seats. It also had AWD and enough ground clearance for mild off-roading. What was also impressive was that it could tow over 5,000 pounds.
A few other manufacturers make similar vans, but none are sold in North America. The last midsized van available here was the Metris; before that, it was the Astro/Safari.
I think there would be a lot of interest in this kind of vehicle (sales of the Sprinter are going up after all), but I guess automakers feel that they'd steal away sales from their large crossovers and pickups.
Thoughts?

2024.06.01 15:05 soap-taster Hiking suggestions (southern)
Hello everyone
My father (Danish) and I are camper vanning through southern Norway. We plan on ending up in Bergen after 4-5 days of traveling. My father wanted a more authentic experience and wanted to stay away from guided tours and big tourist “traps”.
We were hoping to find some suggestions on hiking trails and camping spots through Norway that were more low-key but still offered great experiences.
Thanks for the help!

2024.06.01 07:24 Hallelujah289 Trying out Babish’s number 2 vanilla: Edy’s French Vanilla. Result: it’s more of a cake batter taste
A short while ago I posted a summary of a YouTuber foodie’s ranking of 24 vanilla ice cream flavors (
this post). I was surprised that an Edy’s ice cream, their French Vanilla, scored 8/10 which was second highest in the video and beat out vanilla flavors from Haagen Dazs, Ben and Jerry’s, Van Leeuwen, Tillamook, Turkey Hill, etc. (See last picture for screenshot of all 24 ice creams he tested.)
Direct link to Babish vanilla taste test video Babish is not an ice cream expert or even really likes vanilla ice cream (thus his highest was only 8/10, given to McConnell’s Vanilla Bean). However he did the most expensive pint highest, and interestingly, the often disregarded Edy’s brand second.
His rating for the Edy’s ice cream is a “special 8” as he gives the caveat that it’s actually a marshmallow flavor, not vanilla. And notes some artificial flavor. He also ranks a different Edy’s ice cream, Vanilla Bean, the lowest out of all 24 flavors, 1/10, showing he can distinguish a poor vanilla (not that I’ve tried it).
Well I had to go check out this Edy’s French Vanilla ice cream. As luck would have it, it was on deep discount for Memorial Day sale.
- Price: $4.79 for 1.5 quart/48 oz. ($1.66 special sale)
- Taste profile: expected an old fashioned custard taste, but it’s actually like a vanilla cake batter taste. Confectionery, cotton candy or marshmallow type taste.
- Artificial?: yes, but not overwhelmingly so. Fine for the flavor. Some lingering taste.
- Texture: Airy, like a dense whipped cream. Works for the flavor.
- Pairs well with: candy, sour flavors, etc. I poured Blue Raspberry syrup on top and it was perfect Blue Moon taste.
- Best for: kid’s parties. Make a unicorn cake flavor ice cream with this.
- Would repurchase: yes, if I specifically want a cake batter taste.
I think Babish is right, French Vanilla is a decent ice cream for Edys. Who else has a 48oz of cake batter ice cream? It’s a nice flavor, but totally not vanilla (well, I guess vanilla cake batter kind of counts?) and especially not what I think of as French Vanilla. Edy’s should definitely rebrand this ice cream.
Imho, Edy’s French Vanilla should not be in the running for best vanilla taste. It is simply a different flavor of ice cream.
Ben and Jerry’s Vanilla scored 7/10 in Babish’s best vanilla ranking and was tied for third with another ice cream. I recently tried this one and think it’s the proper runner up.
I also tried the much recommended Blue Bell Homemade Version suggested in the comment section of the video. It is much more of a vanilla flavor than Edy’s French Vanilla. But it’s a totally different flavor than vanilla bean. I think there should be multiple categories for best of vanilla flavors.
Back to Edy’s French Vanilla: it’s pretty decent if you are looking for something like a light birthday cake flavor with slight density and an airy, marshmallow-y mouthfeel. 7/10.

Hey everyone,
I'm from Chile and currently on an epic road trip with my dad. We're driving a 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia camper van from Seattle to Grand Teton and back. We're also planning to do some fly fishing along the way. After this trip, we'll be flying to Alaska for more adventures.
Can anyone recommend good spots to spend the night? We're looking for beautiful, safe, and ideally peaceful places to park our van and camp. Additionally, we'd like to understand what's legal and not legal to do in Washington State, Montana, and Wyoming, especially regarding overnight camping and fishing.
Any tips on great fly fishing spots along the route would also be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
Cheers,
