2024.05.29 17:33 MrFarmersDaughter Extreme Sweet Itch

Extreme Sweet Itch
(Note: these pics are from early May before things escalated.) I think am out of options, according to everything I’ve read online and based on the last time I spoke to our vet. Vet is coming out again soon to speak further, but I’m reaching out here to gather others’ experiences. Has anyone successfully mitigated extreme sweet itch? And, if so, HOW? Here’s what we’ve done: Allergy testing Summer of 2023 / showed allergies to corn, soy, rice, bug saliva and some grasses not in our area. Started allergy injections September 2023. They helped A LOT through the winter! She grew a tail and didn’t have any open wounds from scratching. By March, she was beginning to scratch again. (We are in Pennsylvania, USA) Using steroid cream from vet on the worst areas, but honestly, it does nothing. April, added 11 tablets of Zyrtec at each of 2 feedings. May, removed any allergen grains from her diet. And got her a Snuggyhood to help with the belly itching. End of May, right now, Snuggy hood has 3 holes in it. She has open wounds daily from scratching on her shed and the one tree in the pasture. She is so distracted that I’m not riding her or even really working with her because she can barely go 15’ before she has to scratch something with her teeth. The top of her front legs are hairless and the skin is rough and angry. Her ears are usually wounded as is her neck and tail. I go back and forth between the steroid cream, a steroid spray, a bentonite clay paste to help dry the wounds and swat. I need answers and other options because she is miserable and nothing we’ve done helps at all. TIA

2024.05.22 00:04 SticksOfButter21 Psych. Doc visit went well. Valium increase + started Prazosin. Zenzedi stabilized.

My visit with psychiatrist yesterday has helped me reach comfort in my mind with a constant anxiety of something I’m sure many are worried about and it is not right (if you can relate to this): the anxiety of your doc cutting, not changing dose and pharmacy rejecting and giving problems with controlled meds.
Both pharmacy and psychiatrist reassured me: allowed me to use 75 + 90 tabs about 1 week after 75 Valium 5mg to dose an extra tab if needed: explained I was on Valium 10mg x3 daily. So I let him know if I can try going daily with Valium 10mg twice daily I think it would be a good start with years of therapy, tapered down, and 4 years in Army as medic now out for about 1 year with fully honorable for medical retirement - I’m happy my discharge is the same as finishing my 4 year contract and did 4 years retired a few days shy of ETS (last day) date.
He gave me Valium 5mg x4 a day and said I can take it as I see fit in my day but not recommended to take all 4 at once like I’m at the dentist or something lol. Can take 3 in morning if I want, 1 at night; 2 and 2, etc.
Started me on Prazosin 1mg and stopped clonidine ER 0.1mg twice daily and took first dose at bed having the morning clonidine in me… ouch lol side effects of weakness had me miss worth and head to urgent care, but got better with time. I felt like I had an ear ache but got better on Zyrtec. So far side effects there, but the daytime effects I can see my trigger response isn’t as overdriven, so med good for daytime symptoms with PTSD too not only good for nightmares which I’ve been lacking a lot regardless. Did not wake up same time of 2:50 - 3:00am as I do like 5/7 nights in a week - great sign for me on its benefit of sleeping being me! I’m on Zoloft 50mg and plan to taper down off of because last VA psych. was only focusing on tapering me off of Valium.
Doctors who taper long term daily benzo’s with compliance AND especially patients who already tapered like myself twice with horrible quality of life: you aren’t even following WHO guidelines if that’s even a concern
Sorry to patients being hassled being on benzos long term. There’s no Suboxone of benzos as they have for opioid users choosing to quit and switch. Klonopin maybe is a similar concept with long duration; maybe Valium too with long half life understood by doctors.
Lastly, the switch from Adderall XR and IR to Zenzedi (dextroamphetamine sulfate) it’s a brand name similar to Dexedrine tablets, more dose options similar to Adderall IR. I am seeing a better amount of benefits with this: no rush sensation, no cold extremities regardless of fluid intake and running 20 - 40 miles/week. Sleeping is easier because the med wears off without the Levoamphetamine continuing to produce nasty PNS (peripheral nervous system) effects.
The pharmacy telling me the doctor choosing whatever he wants to send in, he will fill it. Even mentioning Desoxyn the pharmacist was okay with this.
I’m not used to having a doctor and pharmacy there to be there for me and do their job title. I was always in fear and seeing this 10-11 years later: it’s all fear surrounded around the system that the doctor (now influx of NP/PA especially) follow and limitations unspoken on stop them from helping; seemingly they believe the anti-med information and push stuff like gabapentin - now not so much in several states with controlled status or reporting to PDMP. System nonsense right there.
My post is long but I want anyone to know chat/message for help/support: I’ve played the game and fought for myself been on benzo/stimulant since 13-14 no problems with meds until new docs began taper-happy, extended release happy anti-fast tablet mindset: pressure lead to abuse thinking I was f-worded, but better docs helped my mind slow down abuse knowing stability with each good doc.
I’m here to help if needed: 3 year medic army clinic time helped too.

2024.05.16 07:29 crispy_chicken01 Really Bad Seasonal Asthma!

I have always had asthma from a very young age, It was usually a couple of really bad flair ups during the year which would pass within a few days.
However recently (from August) they started getting worse, and they last really long. I got sick from traveling and had laryngitis which made my asthma go off track and even lost my voice for 2 weeks.
I keep thinking maybe that's the reason my asthma is really bad, but i got an x-ray and the doctor said everything looks good. My current asthma flare-up has been going on for about 4 weeks ( recent 2 of which very mild) I have been to the clinic about 4 times this week taking the nebulizer and it makes me feel better, however when I switch back to my ventolin (2 disc puffs) or even try the nebuliser at home ( 1ml ventolin solution + 2ml saline solution) I do not feel better. I have also seen Asthma Specialists who told me its very normal this time of year due to weather changing ( Its horrible here!) and they also told me that there are alot of people like me, but it's still not comforting knowing I am not improving!
They also put me on Montelukast (for 60 days currently been about 2.5 weeks) and also took a course of Prednisolone (40mg for 5 days) which none of which seemed to be helping.
I am also taking Zyrtec allergy tablets every night, also using nasal spray when feeling congested. I sleep with an Air Purifier always and keep it on when I am at home. I clean the air conditioning filters very often too.
Not sure what's left to do at this point!

2024.05.13 23:53 Squigglii Sharing everything I’ve learned over the past 7 years in case it could help someone else .

I’m on year 7 of my IC journey that started at 15 years old. I’ve had pretty much everything under the sun with multiple specialists, so I thought I would share for people in the same positions I was in during the beggining.
Regular gyno or urologists are oftentimes clueless about IC. Please see a urogyno asap.
Hydroxozine and Benadryl can help with the bladder sensitivity and burning a bit as well as help you sleep.
If you’re looking for something non drowsy Zyrtec may work for you and one of my friends has really good luck with Xyzal (both are otc).
There are some studies about the long term effects of too much Benadryl so I’d be cautious about that.
Some supplements that many people with IC take consistently are D-mannose, aloe tablets, magnesium (for the muscles and sleep), and marshmallow root. I’ve noticed improvement from D-mannose and aloe for the burning but not as much marshmallow root.
The aloe tablets are also great for those with vaginal dryness from their inflammation.
Desert harvest also has an AMAZING cream called relevium you can order over the counter with 4% lidocaine in it as well as aloe and vitamin e that helps repair skin and reduce inflammation. It’s so good for the burning. Do not use it inside (but a little won’t hurt if it gets in there). It’s mainly for urethra irritation and burning.
IC is not simply a bladder disorder originating from inside your bladder. It HEAVILY affects your muscles. Feel inside your vagina and if it’s very tight, banding, or causing painful intercourse you likely have hypertonic pelvic floor issues either causing or exacerbating your IC. There are many stretches you can do to help this as well as pelvic floor therapy. It’s a godsend for many, but don’t get discouraged if it gets a little worse before it gets better with that. It’s part of the process with the lactic acid build up in your muscles.
There are two common kinds of PFT one of which you should be very wary of. The first time I went through this process I saw a team who focused on electrostimulation therapy. This is where a probe is inserted vaginallty and anally and contracts the muscles more and more with each visit. That method also focuses on kegals. Not only does it make most people much worse while they’re in treatment, it’s proven to not be very effective at all and make some people worse. The goal of this method is to essentially wear out your muscles to the point they finally give up and relax. It’s effective for very few people and I would suggest only doing it as a last resort.
I would recommend pelvic floor therapy involving muscle relaxers, stretches, and vaginal massage before that. The way that works is that they essentially cut off blood flow to those tense muscles through massage, hoping that the fresh oxygenated blood flowing in helps the muscles to heal and relax. Once again this may feel worse before it feels better due to the lactic acid buildup.
Do not give up on Pelvic Floor Therapy until you’ve given it 6-12 weeks.
If those muscles are stubborn there are options for pelvic floor Botox injections as well as bladder injections. These can also be done under anasthesia during other procedures like cystoscopy and hydro hydrodistention. I honestly recommend doing that because it is very painful without it and may stress the fuck out of your muscles if you’re awake.
hydrodistention is when they fill your bladder to max capacity. This is done routinely to stretch your bladder and to measure bladder capacity.
There is also the bacterial side of things. Some people with IC have overgrowths of bacteria in their urine. There is a 24 hour urine test you can do to look at how your urine is comprised and how much you’re peeing. There is also a culture where they culture all the bacteria’s in your bladder in one inviroment as they would grow inside you. This is to replicate the environment of your bladder to see if you have any antibiotic resistances, overgrowths, or other things.
Ureaplasma and mycoplasma are another theory that’s kinda controversial and expensive to test for. But some consider it an std. it’s a type of bacteria that can overgrow in your bladder, but also it’s kinda a part of the natural microbiome so I don’t know how much credit I give that.
You may notice that you have other conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, adenomyosis, and or IBS. These conditions are also inflaming your pelvis and can make your bladder more angry if not under check. However, I DONT suggest going crazy trying to cure other pelvic conditions in order to fix your bladder. That’s what I did and it didn’t work as I’d have hoped. I’d try to find multiple doctors or people recommended by ur urogynocologist to help you manage everything together if that sounds like you.
Hope this helps!

2024.05.08 18:29 McgovernAllergy Over-the-Counter Allergy Medications: How to Choose the Right One for You

Are seasonal allergies making your life miserable? Itchy eyes, sneezing fits, and runny nose can damage your day. Fortunately, many over-the-counter (OTC) allergy medications can help you find relief. However, with so many options on the market, how do you choose the right one? Let’s explore some tips to help you make an informed decision.

Identify Your Symptoms

Before selecting an allergy medication, it’s essential to identify your specific symptoms. Do you primarily experience nasal congestion, itchy eyes, or a combination of symptoms? Knowing your symptoms will help you choose a medication that targets your specific needs.

Understand the Types of Allergy Medications

Several over-the-counter allergy medications are available, including antihistamines, decongestants, nasal sprays, and eye drops. Antihistamines are commonly used to relieve sneezing, itching, and a runny nose, while decongestants help reduce nasal congestion. Nasal sprays and eye drops can provide targeted relief for nasal congestion and itchy, watery eyes.

Consider Your Lifestyle

When choosing an allergy medication, consider your lifestyle and daily activities. In general, non-drowsy newer generation antihistamines like loratadine (Claritin), fexofenadine (Allegra), levocetirizine (Xyzal) or cetirizine (Zyrtec) may be a better option as they last longer and have fewer side effects. Try to avoid older generation antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), due to increased side effects.

Read Labels Carefully

Pay close attention to the active ingredients and dosage instructions on allergy
medication labels. Some medications may contain multiple ingredients, such as an
antihistamine and a decongestant. Ensure you’re not taking duplicate medicines that
could lead to overmedication or potential side effects. Common decongestants sold OTC include oxymetazoline (Afrin) and pseudoephedrine. Try to avoid long term use of these decongestants and review these medications with your doctor.

Consult Your Healthcare Provider

If you have underlying health conditions or are taking other medications, consult your healthcare provider before starting any new allergy medication. They can help ensure the medication is safe and compatible with your health regimen.

Consider Allergy Medication Formulations

Allergy medications come in various formulations, including tablets, capsules, liquids, and dissolvable tablets. Choose a formulation that is convenient and easy for you to take based on your preferences and needs.

Trial and Error

Finding the proper allergy medication may require some trial and error. Don’t hesitate to try another option if one medication doesn’t provide adequate relief or causes unwanted side effects. Everyone’s body reacts differently to drugs, so finding the right fit may take some experimentation.
Another factor to consider when choosing an allergy medication is the duration of action. Some medications provide relief for up to 24 hours, allowing you to go about your day without constantly worrying about symptoms returning. Others may require more frequent dosing, which can be inconvenient for those with busy schedules.
It’s also important to be aware of potential side effects associated with allergy medications. While most over-the-counter options are generally safe when used as directed, typical side effects may include drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, or mild stomach upset. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider.
Remember that allergy medications may interact with other medicines or supplements you’re taking. Always check with your pharmacist or allergist to ensure no potential drug interactions could affect your health.
Consider the cost of allergy medications, especially if you anticipate needing them regularly throughout the season. Generic options are often more affordable than brand-name medications and can provide the same effectiveness.
By considering these factors and proactively managing your allergies, you can find the best allergy medication to suit your needs and help you enjoy life without the burden of constant allergy symptoms.

2024.05.07 01:42 shaneka69 DEPRESSION: A NUMEROLOGY DECODE

Let's Decode What Depression Is And More

Today I will be going in depth about depression and decoding the word and reasoning with Numerology. We can already see that depression has a lot of repeated letters which shows there is too much of a focus on one thing and too much of something can usually hinder it or cause imbalance.
Let's break down the word DEPRESSION:
The word has E 2 times, S 2 times
D=4
E=5
P=7(16)
R=9(18)
E=5
S=1(19)
S=1(19)
I=9
O=6(15)
N=5(14)
Let's first focus on the obvious! This word has karmic debt numbers for the letters N, P, and S. Let's grab some context from a site that I will link below that explain what these karmic debt numbers mean in detail.
"The 14 Karmic Debt arises from previous actions where human freedom has been abused. Those with a 14 Karmic Debt are forced to adapt to ever-changing circumstances and unexpected occurrences. There is an acute danger of falling victim to drug abuse, alcohol, or overindulgence in sensual pleasures, such as food and sex. Moderation in all affairs is crucial to overcome this Karmic Debt." - credit goes to Karmic Debt Numbers in Numerology World Numerology
"The 16 Karmic Debt – in any area it appears in a chart - means destruction of the old and birth of the new. It is about the fall of the ego and all it has built for itself. It is a watershed, a cleansing. Things the ego has constructed to separate a person from the source of life, are destroyed.
Through the 16, reunion with higher consciousness may be achieved. This can be a painful process because it usually comes after much ego inflation, resulting in a struggle between the ego and higher ideals. Life will present challenges to your grand plans which you may resent and struggle against. It is a losing battle… and you will likely feel humbled in the face of the collapse that follows. However, humility is the key to later success, as you learn to follow the intimations of a deeper reality."
"A person with the 19 Karmic Debt will learn independence and the proper use of power. You will be placed in situations where you are forced to stand up for yourself (and often be left standing alone). One of the central lessons for people with the 19 Karmic Debt revolves around stubbornly resisting help from others. Much of your independence is self-imposed - you simply want to do it your own way.The 19 Karmic Debt can become a self-imposed prison if you don’t recognize the need for interdependence and the mutual need for love.Although you seek to stand on your own feet, you are inextricably connected to others and in need of the support and understanding that all people need - this is the most important lesson for the 19 Karmic Debt." And being personally connected to a lot of 19 energy, this is very true! There is one 19 person I watch on Youtube and he is using this energy pretty well.

DECODING DEPRESSION

Let's take a look at the word. You see it starts with the letter D which is ruled by the number 4 as the 4th letter in the alphabet. 4 energy is connected to privacy, home, family, discontent, restriction, and nonchalant energy. There is many more terms, but you can see where this is going. If you call certain companies toll free, listen to what they say you need to press number 4 for.
What just hit me as I looked at the word is the rest of the word after DE...PRESSION. Maybe there is something needing to be expressed(expression!) that isn't being expressed. All depression is, is suppression of something. D/4 can be suppression and withholding. That's why some jobs want you to fill out the W4 which is a withholding form! Depression comes when someone is choosing to withhold expression of emotions and genuine communication that can help. Taking caution to a whole new level and it ends up being destructive. 4 can point to dissipation which makes sense for destruction to mean what it means.
The word starts with the energy of 4 which is about withholding and suppression and end with the energy of 5 which can be conflicting.
All those letters and we only get to the number 5?!. This word is embedded with the energy of 1 and 9 which means that people who claim or feel depression CAN utilize their personal power to get themselves out of said depression. You have the right to process your emotions and once you do, you can start using your strength and power to overcome. Sometimes it starts with the mind.
Now, based on the letters and numbers with the word, let's see what numbers are missing!
We are missing 2,3,and 8! 2 gives a person a natural comfort within self. It can also make them loveable or easily cooperative with others. The energy of 3 gives a person natural optimism and majestic mental capacity. 8 gives a person a steadfast embedded powerful strength. This 8 energy gives a person unstoppable capability.
Getting over depression is about rising above a situation and having the capability of strengthening your perspective. Your confidence levels are something you have to personally master. Notice how depression ends with O and N which is 6 and 5. That's a backtrack. We're counting forwards, not backwards. 6 is about overcoming problems while 5 is the problems or insecurities. Depression ending with the energy of 5 is a thinkpiece. 5 deals with the uniqueness of a situation or action. You will have to do something different or new to wake up out of whatever this depression was about and understand that everyone's depression won't be the same!

2024.05.01 19:09 TimeKaleidoscope Significant Improvement & What has Helped Me

I’ve made a lot of piecemeal posts in this sub, but wanted to detail my experience of long covid over the past year and a half and what has helped. Prepare for a long post! I will update the sub as things change.
TL/DR: I have made very significant improvements with functional medicine and a cocktail of drugs tailored to my personal issues and probably some element of time. Nothing groundbreaking here, but I have learned a few things. I’m back to living life, but not 100% recovered. Have not had a crash/PEM since December. I am sharing my experiences in case it’s useful to anyone as they seek treatment.
MY LONG COVID EXPERIENCE/SYMPTOMS:
I got Covid for the first time (that I know of) in October of 2022 from my school-age kid. I had already received 4 different MRNA vaccines at the time, including a very recent booster. My husband got it the exact same day I did. We both began to recover, but about a week and a half after my initial positive test, I began to have a whole new set of symptoms that I now recognize as long covid. Meanwhile, my husband was feeling better and better, so I knew something was wrong.
I was brushed off by my primary care doctor multiple times, but eventually she did test me for dysautonomia in the office based on my symptoms. I received an initial diagnosis of orthostatic hypotension (not POTS, but similar). Blood tests also showed elevated d-dimer, so I got a CT scan of my lungs to look for clots, which was negative.
Oddly, after this first bout of symptoms, I felt much better for about six weeks, but then my symptoms returned, and my long covid started in earnest in January of 2023. My symptoms only got worse from there.
Major symptoms included fatigue, PEM, low blood pressure when standing, feeling of internal “shakiness,” “lactic acid” feeling in the muscles after minor activites (i'm talking doing a few dishes), pain at the base of my skull, headaches, flushed face, occasional insomnia, a heavy feeling like gravity was 10x stronger than normal, dizziness, temperature dysregulation, nerve pain, visual issues like “graying out” and trouble focusing my eyes for extended periods, difficulty walking, feeling absolutely terrible right before my period, trouble waking up, feeling poisoned in the morning, feelings similar to a panic attack without the anxious thoughts, frequent sore throat, and probably many more that I’m not thinking of.
Over the past year, I’ve seen multiple doctors and undergone lots of tests including 2 MRIs and more blood tests than I can count. I am now SIGNIFICANTLY improved and mostly able to live life without thinking too hard about long covid beyond keeping track of all my meds. My absolute lowest point was last summer, and although I wasn’t bedbound, I felt that I was going in that direction if I hadn't been lucky enough to find my first game-changer treatment (valtrex). I now feel fairly functional and have been working on increasing my physical activity with a physical therapist. I am able to work a full day without taking breaks and attend my kids’ activities and socialize and leave the house many times per week. I’m not fully recovered and may never be. At this point, I mainly have mild symptoms of dysautonomia. I wanted to share what helped me in case it can help others.
Note on exercise: I was exercising regularly before long covid, but was never an athlete like so many people here seem to be. So I don't expect to be able to exercise heavily for some time, and to be frank, I’m still kind of scared to try. I am now able to walk good distances and do my PT strength exercises, which is good enough for me right now. My priority is being able to participate in life again as much as possible and especially to participate in my kids’ lives since this past year has been such shit.
OVERALL THOUGHTS:
I don’t believe that there is any one answer to improving or recovering from long covid, at least until they figure out the underlying cause and trial more aggressive treatments. I think, unfortunately, that personalized medicine is required for many of us, especially in the absence of proven treatments. It sucks that so few doctors will take it on. Much of my improvement came from working with a functional medicine doctor who did an insane amount of testing to try to identify problems specific to me. She was willing to prescribe both drugs and supplements and took my ideas into account. I now think of my covid infection as a kind of trigger (or possibly an ongoing attack?) that aggravated my immune system and created or exacerbated inflammation to a level that my body couldn’t sustain and function.
I want to note that although my long covid was extremely difficult for me over the past year+, especially given that I have two youngish children and a job that I needed to keep, I was never bedbound or severe. At my worst, I was moderate/housebound. My heart goes out to those of you dealing with more severe versions of this illness or who have been dealing with it since the beginning of the pandemic.
I also am extremely lucky that I didn’t have a lot of medication side effects/reactions. I generally reacted fairly well or just simply didn’t react to medications. YMMV with any of the treatments below.
I also want to specifically recommend the podcast “Unraveled” on Patreon featuring Drs. Ruhoy and Kaufman, which I have posted about before in this sub. There is so much information out there in the world about long covid and ME/CFS, but their podcast helped me put the pieces together and be much more effective in working with my functional medicine doctor.
Below are treatments/lifestyle changes that helped me personally. I am not recommending them to anyone else, but simply sharing in case my experience helps anyone as they look for treatment options.
VERY EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS FOR ME:
Midodrine - given that my blood pressure drops when I stand up, this drug prescribed by my cardiologist allowed me to be up and about much more over the course of my long covid.
Valtrex - I had extremely high levels of EBV antibodies, but NO positive IgM. nonetheless, Valtrex gave me a significant baseline boost, and the “poisoned” feeling dissipated and never returned. I’m still on a maintenance dose. No side effects.
Oxaloacetate - I suspect mitochondrial issues, and I learned about this supplement from the podcast. It’s insanely expensive, but for me, it helps dramatically with my energy levels and helps me turn crashes around. Hoping the price will come down.
Ketotifen - Although I initially struggled with it making me sleepy, this medication has helped me fairly dramatically. It seems that the “heavy feeling” might have been MCAS-related, since ketotifen seemingly made it go away. Importantly, I didn’t have particularly obvious signs of mast cell issues, and my blood tests for MCAS were negative.
Pacing with Garmin Watch - miserable to learn, but I think it helped me avoid decline in the first year. I hate it though. I use my step count, HR, resting heart rate, and “body battery” to keep tabs on how I’m doing with pacing, and I try to take it with a grain of salt.
THINGS THAT HELPED:
Low-dose naltrexone - I debated putting this above. It helped me with pain and perhaps with fatigue/pem and definitely with brain fog. Maybe sleep too? it made me feel more “like myself” but it's a slow burn to get the full effect, so it's a bit hard to tell exactly what it does.
Statin - I had high cholesterol following LC (previously high-normal) and also tested high for markers of endothelial inflammation, so I was put on a statin. I didn’t think the statin was doing much, but when I went off it to take Paxlovid for a recent reinfection, I noticed a real difference in how i felt. It also lowered my cholesterol.
B12/Iron/Vitamin D - I tested as deficient for all of these and am working to get them up to normal levels. I think it’s helping to support my recovery, but again, not a game-changer. I had to resort to B12 injections at home because the pills weren’t doing much to help my deficiency
Beta blockers - although I am no longer on beta blockers, I found them tremendously helpful at a certain point in my long covid when I had more tachycardia and sympathetic overactivation. However, at a certain point, they just made me too tired and I discontinued.
Zyrtec/pepcid - I’ve been on these since the beginning of my long covid thanks to recommendations from this group. Perhaps that’s why my MCAS never became too obviously symptomatic?
Synthroid - I have apparently developed Hashimoto’s, sigh, so getting on thyroid meds helped my overall energy level and probably a lot of other things.
Melatonin - Getting good sleep seems to help me overall. Melatonin + ketotifen + magnesium before bed helps me sleep.
Electrolytes & Compression - Well documented, but electrolytes have helped me with my dysautonomia. I do at least one LMNT packet before I even get out of bed and one nuun tablet per day, at a minimum, with lots of water. Abdominal and leg compression seem mildly useful as well.
Vagus Nerve Techniques - Definitely helpful, especially during the worst of things, for symptom relief. I tried various different strategies like breathing, sensate, yoga nidra, etc.
Physical Therapy - Controversial and has been a mixed bag for me, even with a specialist PT. However, the neck exercises and manipulations were very helpful as well as learning about hypermobility and how to build strength with dysautonomia. I would ONLY consider PT once you are at a certain level of recovery and not getting PEM from minor things.
BLIS K12 Probiotics - positive impact on the ongoing sore throat i’ve had since the beginning. Maybe it’s keeping bad bacteria in check?
Gluten-free Diet - sadly, it seems I am unable to tolerate gluten very well. I REALLY hope this will change.
Ice - sounds dumb, but daily ice packs on the back of the neck helped to calm my symptoms and helped me recover a bit when I overdid it. Discovered this by accident, but it helps a lot.
THINGS THAT MADE NO DIFFERENCE/I’M NOT SURE IF THEY MADE A DIFFERENCE:
Plavix/Natto - Though I know many long-haulers have benefitted from blood thinners and nattokinase, I don’t seem to be in this category. Nonetheless, I had no terrible side effects either. I took Plavix for three months and natto for a month or so.
Most supplements - although it’s hard to say, I tried a large number of supplements with seemingly little effect. I still take CoQ10, trybuterin, fish oil, and magnesium as well as the ones recommended for my specific deficiencies above.
Gut stuff - I was lucky not to have many gut symptoms, but a GI MAP test showed indicators of “leaky gut” so I was put on some herbal treatments. I’m not sure if it helped, but it didn’t hurt either.
Collagen - I have some hypermobility (NOT EDS) and am concerned about how ongoing inflammation is affecting my connective tissue. I take collagen peptides, but have no idea if it’s helping!
Novavax - I opted for the Novavax vaccine for my most recent booster (fall of 23). It didn’t help my long covid, but it also didn’t hurt, so I consider it a huge win.

2024.04.30 19:56 OkElk304 Recurrent hives on elbows only

I am a 34-year-old female, 5‘4“ tall and about 132 pounds. In September 2023, I was diagnosed with chronic urticaria by an allergist and dermatologist. My dermatologist did a biopsy, which came back as urticaria. I had some blood tests run, which ruled out any possible food and environmental allergies. The only thing that did come back positive was my ANA, which was 1:320. The reflex testing ruled out any other autoimmune diseases typically associated with a positive ANA. They’ve run this multiple times and it continues to come back negative for any other auto immune diseases. I do not have any other symptoms except for hives. The hives are well controlled with one 10mg tablet of Zyrtec daily. If I am late to take my Zyrtec, I do occasionally get breakthrough hives, but they only occur on my elbows and very rarely on my knees. Why is this and what can I do to help prevent it?

Anybody know what these spaces are for?
I’ve noticed two different allergy over the counter medications packages have a seemingly useless “gap” or empty space in their packaging. Is it cheaper to use already existing packages and change the label and product that goes in them? Are they air pockets so the bottles can breathe? What are they for?

2024.04.27 04:25 DangoGalaxy Has anyone ever experienced something like this?

27f, I feel l should preface by saying that I already have a doctor's appointment lined up for next week, so I'm not looking for a diagnosis or anything in this. I'm just confused and need to vent 🥲
So, my symptoms have been kinda all over the place, and it all started last August when I suddenly became very bloated/uncomfortable. At first, I thought that maybe I was just constipated, but I tried Miralax with no success. Then I had some burning pain when peeing, so I went in to see if I had a UTI, but the tests came back fine. (It turned out to just be a Bartholin cyst) All of this happened over the course of about a month, but the bloating never got better. So I made another appointment and ended up going to the ER because I was uncomfortable and scared it could be something serious when I started experiencing stabbing pains in my left side
At the ER, they did an ultrasound of my gallbladder, liver, and kidneys, and ran a couple of blood tests/urinalysis. But everything came back fine, just some white blood cells in my urine that doctor thought were probably from the Bartholin cyst
That morning, I had started my period, and I had horrible pain. I was in tears the cramps were so bad. Usually, I take a couple ibuprofen when I start to feel cramps and everything is good, but being at the ER, I wasn't able to and honestly, they didn't get bad until I started to walk around after leaving. I took some Midol when I got home, and felt better eventually. I used to have pretty bad period pain when I first got my period as a teen because I couldn't make myself take pills (anxiety), but since finally being able to take ibuprofen for it, I'm okay and can go about my day just fine
I told my nurse practitioner all of this at my appointment a couple days later, and I also realized that the bloating started when I was supposed to be ovulating. She felt that maybe I just have GERD and had me take a round of Prilosec. I started to feel better after that
Then, in late October, I ran out of Zyrtec, and when I went to pick more up at the store, they were out of the regular tablets. So, I picked up some gel ones. The first night I was fine, but the second night I had some sort of a reaction to it. I had a racing heartbeat, chills, insomnia, and tingling in my feet and hands. I stopped taking it, but I felt like I was having palpitations
Now, this is where I messed up. I should have gone to see my nurse practitioner as soon as this happened, but I was freaked out. I'm not proud of it. It took me month to make an appointment, but when I went in, everything sounded fine. She still gave me a referral for a 48hr holter monitor. My anxiety about it was pretty bad, so I took another month to actually get the monitor. One day, I think I even had a panic attack in the shower where my ears felt like they shut off and I thought I was going to pass out, but I was able to sit and breathe through it
I was also on and off with the Zyrtec. I have pretty bad perennial nasal allergies, and I've been taking Zyrtec along with Dymista and Singulair every day for 8 years. So stopping Zyrtec made my allergies flair up
This whole time, I could have sworn I was having palpitations and that I probably had afib, but when the results from the monitor came back, they said I had no abnormalities. The nurse said maybe it was just anxiety, but I've never had symptoms like that before. After that, I quit taking Zyrtec altogether, and I no longer feel like I'm having palpitations exactly
For unrelated reasons, I decided to change my primary, but unfortunately, I couldn't get my first appointment until May 1. In the past four months, I've had a lot of time to think and do my own research so I have an idea on what to ask about
Then, last month when I was supposed to be ovulating, it happened again, and I had some light spotting. Now I feel bloated and just uncomfortable. Not really in pain, except a few sporadic, light stabbing pains over the month. My period was normal (minus a somewhat bigger clot that I passed), and then I was supposed to be ovulating this last week and I had some spotting again
So at this point, I'm thinking it's an ovarian cyst, because it would seem to be a really big coincidence for all these symptoms to show up when I'm ovulating. The reason I brought up the weird "heart" issue is, I did some research, and I guess heartburn can mimic palpitations by causing your esophagus/stomach to kinda vibrate? Which, after I read about it, I realized when it happens, it does seem to feel significantly lower than my heart actually. And I read that ovarian cysts can cause heartburn, so
I'm going to ask about getting set up with a gynecologist, and see what my new doctor thinks about testing for an ulcer and/or GERD as well, just to cover my bases
For a bit more info/TLDR:
My current symptoms are bloating, those weird whale noises stomachs like to make sometimes, occasional mild heartburn, burping, stomach aches, hunger, and spotting concurrent with ovulation
I've also always had 7-8 day periods and slightly longer menstrual cycles. My periods start out pretty heavy on the first two days, but get lighter after that. They can also be somewhat irregular, which I've always attributed to stress but it may not be. I also always have small clots, and maybe 3 times, I've had a nickle-sized clot show up. I started menstruating at 12
(And as a disclaimer, I've never been to a gynecologist before. I know it's irresponsible of me, I'm just anxious about it. And I'm a virgin who has never been on a date or even tried to use a tampon before. Please don't lecture me on it. I'm trying to work up the courage to finally see one)
Update:
I ended up waking up with severe pain in my right side. I went to the ER, and after an ultrasound and a CT, they determined I do not have any cysts on my ovaries. I did pass a kidney stone, though. No idea if that's what's behind my other symptoms yet; hoping to find out more soon

2024.04.24 07:22 teezusweezus I have cystic acne and am terrified about purging when I start, what preventative steps can I take?

My plan is to take a zyrtec every day because I heard this helps, and omega 3 tablets.

Also Im thinking of asking my derm for prednisone but Im not sure if he would give it to me before I even start accutane, what do you guys think about that?

You’ve got allergy questions, we’ve got allergy answers. Not to sound braggy, but – we’re ZYRTEC®. We know what we’re talking about.
[TL;DR] Why are you sneezing? Why are your kids sneezing? Is it allergies? Is it a cold? What even are allergies? Get ready to learn, ELI5-style.

https://i.redd.it/bpnd02qon2wc1.gif

Allergies are not something you are born with, but rather your body develops an allergic response to a particular substance when you come into contact with it. Allergy symptoms are caused by your immune system wrongly responding to a substance it deems dangerous, such as pollen, pet dander, dust, or mold. When you have an allergic reaction, your immune system produces high quantities of chemicals known as histamines. In a typical immune response, your body will produce histamine to help fight infection, but in an allergic response this process is triggered by something harmless that your body mistakes for a threat and can cause typical allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny noses, itchy throats and/or watery eyes.
Allergies can be seasonal or perennial (year-round):
Seasonal allergies (or hay fever) cause symptoms at specific times of the year if you have an allergy to certain pollen spores in the air. While many people think of allergy season as spring or fall, allergy season can mean different things to different people depending on where you live and what type of pollen triggers your allergies.
Perennial allergies cause symptoms that occur year-round and can be caused by allergens that are present year-round such as dust.

Learn more about common allergy symptoms and check out our ZyrTalk™ video on juggling allergies

https://i.redd.it/9txmiipwn2wc1.gif
Outdoor allergies can be triggered by many things. At different times of year, different culprits are more likely the cause for your allergy symptoms:
Spring: Tree pollen is the biggest spring allergy trigger. In some places, trees can start releasing their pollen as early as January, with the spread lasting until June. Even if you live in a city without many trees, you can experience tree pollen allergy symptoms as trees produce light, dry pollen that can be carried by the wind for miles.

Summer: Grass pollen is the biggest summer allergy trigger. There are more than 1,000 types of grass in North America, but only a few produce highly allergenic pollen. The most common types of grass pollen allergies include: Bermuda grass, Johnson grass, Kentucky bluegrass, Orchard grass, Sweet vernal grass, and Timothy grass.

Fall: Ragweed is an especially common trigger of fall allergies, as one ragweed plant can produce around a million pollen grains per day. Ragweed starts pollinating in late summer and can continue through September or October depending on how warm it is.

Winter: Outdoor allergies are less common in the colder months, but that doesn’t mean allergy season is over. In some areas of the country, allergy season can continue in winter months. For example, in Texas and Oklahoma, “Cedar Fever” is common from December through February. Cedar Fever refers to an allergic reaction to pollen from mountain cedar trees which causes common allergy symptoms like a runny nose or sneezing and picks up in winter months when these trees are pollinating.

Indoor allergies can occur year round, with a few common offenders triggering symptoms:
Pets: We all love our pets, but unfortunately for some of us we don’t love the allergies that can come with them. Animal allergies can stem from proteins contained in an animal’s dander or dead skin cells, both of which can flake off regularly. Pet dander can cause an allergic reaction at any time of year – especially during the winter months when people spend more time indoors.
Dogs: Most people with a dog allergy aren’t typically allergic to dog fur itself. Instead, they’re allergic to the dander, urine and saliva that builds up on that hair over time. Because dander and saliva are easily transferred and can stick to the fibers in clothing, it’s possible to have an allergic reaction to dogs even if there isn’t one present, as triggers could be lingering on the clothing of someone nearby. Poodles, Portuguese water dogs and many other breeds might be known as hypoallergenic dog breeds, but no dog breeds are 100% allergy-free for all people, as each person’s allergy symptoms can respond differently to specific dog breeds.

Cats: Cat dander and saliva – rather than fur – are behind most allergies to cats. Cats are known for their meticulous self-grooming – they lick themselves a lot – and their saliva contains a protein called Fel d 1 that causes cat allergies. This protein transfers on to their skin and coat when they groom themselves. Then, over time, the saliva and proteins build up on the cat’s skin and hair, before flaking off with the cat dander.

Dust: Dust mites are tiny, white, insect-like creatures that measure one quarter to one third of a millimeter. You can only see them under a microscope. Dust mites thrive inside houses and prefer temperatures ranging from 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity levels between 70 and 80 percent. They hydrate by taking moisture from the air, so places with less humidity such as deserts usually have fewer dust mites. Allergies to dust mites are often worst at night and in the morning due to time spent near mattresses, bedding, and pillows where mites often live and can occur year-round.

Mold: Mold and mildew are forms of fungi that multiply using airborne spores and are known to grow in damp areas. They can grow both inside and outside your home if it’s damp. Inside the home, they can be found in the basement or even under the cabinet under your sink. Outside the home, they can be found on logs and leaves. Most outdoor molds are inactive during the winter, and are more active during the spring and fall as they thrive in moist environments and commonly grow on plants that the winter cold kills. But indoor molds can develop at any time of year in damp bathrooms, kitchens or basements. If you have an allergy to mold, you may experience an allergic reaction to these mold spores in the air.

Colds and allergies share some similar symptoms, such as a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, and a sore throat. But there are also some key things that can help you tell the difference:
Some of the biggest differences to note are:
Cold symptoms develop slowly and are milder at first before progressing, while allergy symptoms can develop right after exposure to the allergen.
Cold symptoms typically last 7-10 days, while allergy symptoms can last longer periods of time and recur when in contact with the allergen that triggers your symptoms.
Colds can cause a fever, while allergies do not typically cause a fever.
While the time of year can help with diagnosing whether you have a cold or allergies, it is not definitive. Colds are more common in the winter, cold viruses spread faster in cold weather and immune systems may be weaker at these times. However, you can catch a cold at any time of the year. And while seasonal allergies often strike in the spring, it depends what you are allergic to as allergy symptoms can be year-round.

Allergy symptoms can vary depending on the allergen and each individual child, but common allergy symptoms often seen in kids and toddlers include: runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, itchy & watery eyes, and/or itchy nose or throat. While some of these are similar to cold symptoms, there are some differences to look for (see previous section).
Kids can develop allergies at different ages starting as young as 2, so continue to look out for these symptoms. Children between the ages of 12 to 17 actually experience seasonal allergies at a higher rate than children under the age of 12. Tracking the timing of you child’s allergy symptoms can help you identify whether the cause is likely to be indoor (if symptoms are year-round) or outdoor (if symptoms are seasonal at one time of year) which can help with what steps to take to manage symptoms based on the topics discussed earlier.
The tendency to develop allergies can be hereditary, which means it can be passed down from parent to child. A child has a 30-50% chance of developing allergies if one parent has allergies, and a 60-80% chance if both parents have allergies. This is because certain genes that are associated with allergies can be passed down from parents to children.

In addition to the common symptoms discussed above, allergies can also irritate your nasal passages, causing them to swell and fill with fluid. This can lead to nasal congestion, the feeling of stuffiness or swelling in your nasal passages that causes discomfort and makes it feel as though it's difficult to breathe in or out of your nostrils freely.
Congestion can leave your head and face feeling tight and heavy and in more severe cases, the build-up of pressure from congestion can cause significant pain. Your exact congestion symptoms will depend on the affected area and how your body reacts. Though allergies can be a cause of congestion, there are many other potential sources such as the common cold, flu, or acute sinusitis.
While common antihistamines used to treat allergies do not typically treat congestion, products with an antihistamine and a decongestant can also treat nasal congestion. Decongestants work on the lining of your nose to reduce swelling and relieve congestion.

2024.04.18 23:37 bbyoda54 Hiking poles are a godsend!!

Quick background on me: first vertigo episode in March 2021, diagnosed with BPPV. Long story short, dealt with a roller-coaster of treatment and multiple providers. Now working consistently with an otoneurologist and vision therapist. Currently feeling 60-75% better since initial episode depending on the day, current diagnoses are Vestibular Migraine with eye issues (accomodative insufficiency, exophoria, etc.).
I just returned from a trip where my friends wanted to hike in El Yunque Rainforest. I had used hiking poles on a previous trip to Sedona in October, but it was a very flat hike so while hiking poles helped, I wasn't quite screaming from the rooftops.
My friends let me know about the hike in advance, so I packed my hiking poles, along with a Clif bar, water, and an electrolyte packet.
You guys, I had SO MUCH FUN!! I used the hiking poles for the whole hike, and not only did I keep up with everyone, I was having such a nice time that I only got dizzy about 10 minutes before our stopping point to turn around and go back down. I was proud of myself, thinking I had done an hour of work while fighting the rain, an incline, and a very rocky path. I asked my friend to check her Garmin to see what our distance was.
Y'all, we'd been hiking for 2 HOURS and gained 800 feet in elevation!!! I couldn't believe it!! I was so proud of myself!! I just wanted to share in case anyone else is traveling in the near future and doesn't want to miss out, or is thinking of using a hiking pole or cane for every day!
These are the other items I keep in my "dizzy bag" when I travel:
-Daily dizzy meds as prescribed by doctor: Venlafaxine, Zyrtec, & Flonase
-an inflatable wedge in case I need to be elevated while sleeping
-meclizine, I take 2 tablets about 20 minutes before flight take off
-Sudafed, in case I get inner ear fluid build-up, for me this usually feels like I'm on a boat when I go to bed. I only take this for 3 days if the boat feeling happens
-Clif bars or other protein bars that I can easily carry in my purse in case I start not feeling well
-insulated water bottle to stay hydrated
-electrolyte packets, I carry these in my purse in case I start not feeling well
What travel accommodations have you all made that's made a positive impact? :)

2024.04.18 21:29 Alarming_Ad8074 Zyrtec is making me woozy

I have been having terrible allergies. Before I developed POTS I took Zyrtec daily for several years but stopped one winter bc I wasn’t having bad allergies. I just took one last night and today I feel sooooo dizzy and tired. Idk if this will happen each time I take it or if it will get better the more I take it but anytime o have this kind of dizziness I get very anxious which worsens my pots so I’m having a bad time lol. Has anyone else experienced this? I took the 24 hour tablet and I took it right before I went to sleep. It has never made me feel like this before and I’m a bit scared to take it again tonight but my allergy symptoms also makes my pots worse so is it really a lose lose situation?
