2024.05.18 07:09 CharlieRochx Acer Nitro V15 2024 model opinions? Any alternatives?

After 10 years I'm finally upgrading from mye Acer Aspire F5-571. The thing is, I'm not sure what laptop I should get with a limited budget around $1K.
Right now I'm considering the Acer Nitro V15 2024 model. I found it on Amazon with the specs below:
Is this good? I'll use the game to learn programming and mostly to play videogames. I'd like to play games like Valorant, Elden Ring, Apex Legends, Cyberpunk with good graphics and fps. (Max graphics would be awesome but not really required) I'm a bit tired of having to play all games with the lowest possible specs lol.

2024.05.18 04:28 owo_chickie_nuggie Graphical issues making the game super difficult to play.

Graphical issues making the game super difficult to play.
So essentially I've been getting into helldivers with my partner and only after the last 2 updates have i been getting these super odd graphic's errors. I ran it through steam's "Verify file integrity" thing and nothing came of it. that is the extent of what I am able to do on my limited knowledge as, I am no good with computers. I had no issues upon first install that's the confusing part. no settings were changed, just the updates.
I play the game on an Acer Aspire A7 (AMD Ryzen 7 5700U with Radeon Graphics, and a seperate Nvidia Geforce RTX 3050 Laptop GpU)
again i am not great with computers but the laptop held up for awhile on decent graphics, I have been able to play a lot of my favourite games easily (fallout 4, the sims and valhiem specifically) all on Ultra or high graphics with no issues. I will admit I do tend to play older or less "Demanding" games and that was the soul intent of this pc, but it has the specs (or at least i thought it did) to run helldivers.
anyone know what i can do to fix this? or is it just something i'm gonna end up living with to have a game to play with my partner?

2024.05.17 06:49 First_Serve4024 1k limit for a laptop

I’ve been looking for a gaming laptop for the past few days but my situation is a bit weird.
So, I’ve had the Acer Aspire V Nitro for a few years in college, then had a custom Alienware desktop, however I’m moving to Japan in a couple months for work and while I would love to take my desktop with me, it’s Japan and there’s not much space so I’m going back to laptop gaming.
I am wondering if should I just get a laptop while I’m in Japan or should I buy and bring one with me; and if so what should I get? I’ll be there for a few years at least so it’d be nice to have something that lasts!

Laptop suggestion
• Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**
• Qatar, around 3k qar
• * Are you open to refurbs/used?
• no
• * How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
• I'm looking for a 2-in-1 with stylus. Long lasting battery life and performance. Should be stable for years
• * How important is weight and thinness to you?
• I would prefer a light and thin build
• * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
• N/A
• * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
• Games like roblox, minecraft, modded Minecraft, Stardew valley, and some steam games
• * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
• Games mentioned above. I guess they should run smoothly on low to medium settings with whatever the ideal fps is
• * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
• Touch screen comes with most 2-in-1 latpopd anyway
• * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
• I was checking out Asus vivobook S Flip14, or Acer aspire spin 5 or the lenovo yoga 6, but don't know which of these three best suits my needs
My main use is going to be college work and occasional gaming.

2024.05.16 03:23 weshuhangout Looking for a good laptop for grad school (~$1000/US)

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Around $1000, purchasing from the US.
Are you open to refurbs/used?
I would prefer it to be brand new.
How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I would rank battery life and performance to be top of the list. Build quality next, and form factor last.
How important is weight and thinness to you?
I would prefer the weight to be maximum 4 pounds. It's not the most important for me, but portability is important.
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
N/A
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I am not doing any of the above. For grad school, my daily usage will probably consist of coding (VS Code), browser + many tabs open, streaming (videos/movies), Spotify, Slack, maybe other applications regarding my PhD topic. I don't game and my coding will probably be on remote servers, so I can just use VS Code to login.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?-
N/A
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Performance-wise, I would want a computer that can handle multi-tasking (like browsing + Spotify + VS Code all at once; 16 GB RAM would be optimal). I also would like a durable build quality, screen, and good speakers. Touch-screen or note-taking capabilities would be useful for classes/meetings, but not necessary.
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
My last computer was an Acer Aspire 5 (15.6", 8GB RAM, Iris XE Graphics, 256 GB storage). Some of my gripes with my current computer and what I would love to be upgraded: 1) After using the Aspire 5 for five years, the battery life is not doing it for me anymore (maybe two hours max). I haven't done anything special to maximize battery life. 2) Opening applications and browsers can be really slow. I use Chrome; I can switch to a different browser with the new computer and it'll probably help. 3) Audio: max volume is not enough for a movie night, even just a foot away from me. I almost always need to use my headphones.
I was considering a HP Victus 15, but I think it is just too bulky, not a good enough battery life, and I wouldn't need a dedicated GPU. I am looking for something with a longer battery life (6 hours+), can take it with me without too much trouble (it doesn't need to be super lightweight, though), and be able to multi-task.
Thank you all so much!

2024.05.15 22:48 skinniestbtchalive looking for a strong laptop to run my sims 4 game that i modded to hell and back

my last computer was an acer aspire e-15, it was perfect until it stopped turning on. i don’t know a lot about buying laptops, so please excuse me if any of this information is irrelevant.
LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE * Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
no more than $850 USD
very open to refurbs, not used
performance is most important but a decent battery would be nice too.
not that important to me, would prefer a lighter model as i will probably be using it for everyday purposes like school and streaming movies/shows as well.
i would like around 14”
I need to run sims 4 and FL studios
I need it to be able to run sims 4 pretty heavily modded with most of the DLC and I want to play with high or highest graphic settings. i know sims isn’t the most demanding game but i hate lag with a passion.
Definitely not looking for a touch screen, and i need at least 2 USB ports for music production. it would be a plus if it had an SD card port for my digital camera but not the end of the world if not
I don’t love computers that look super gamer-y, i would prefer a sleeker model. but again i just want it to be able to run the game well

2024.05.15 18:41 Zakmaf Whole Homelab Setup So Far - May 2024 update

I've always been tech-curious and also had a basic NAS for DLNA, but it's only been a year since I went full selfhosting a homelab mode.
Through trial and error, and a lot of pain, I refined my setup using before and foremost what I had on hand and with a limited budget.
This is my current set up and an explanation of how it all works from hardware to software and also my backup policies. Please don't hesitate to tell what am I doing wrong and how I could improve it all. I will try to be as precise as possible, and I will also answer your questions in comments.
As for hardware, I have gathered through the years a lot of stuff that I repurposed for my current setup:
As you can see I have a mix of weird stuff going on. Maybe how I use them will give you a better image of the purpose.
This is my software situation :
Some of my choices will be obvious for you, and some are less, so let's explain it all.
My first error when I started last year, what the lack of reliability. I would set up Pihole and configure it accross my network on the router, but then if I had to do maintenance the whole system crumbled on me. So my first lesson really was to put two instances of Pihole on two separate bare-metal, and from there I needed to apply this to everything.
Before TP-link deco x50 added the possibility to configure an OpenVPN server on the router, i used to access everything through Cloudflared tunnels since my work PC doesn't allow me to install Wireguard client. Then i used Guacamole to RDP/SSH/VNC to any machine on my local network. But what would happen if the VM that hosted the cloudflared tunnel was down? No more remote access.
I would have to open a port on my router App and SSH using port 21 or something like a caveman. So at first, I opted for installing 2 cloudflared tunnels, and then I told myself what the hell and just put as many tunnels as needed so in the case or one or two machines down I would always have an "entry". For the record, i don't permanently set my domain in Cloudflare dashboard, but only if needed.
I didn't have the same problem on my phone since i could just install Wireguard client and access my local network from there. But there again, i created as many instance to cover any machine being down.
I manage local dns through Bind9 because i like the possibility to set wildcards which Pihole doesn't do to this day. Bind9 handles my local domain name and then forwards to pihole in order to blacklist ads and stuff. Is this efficient tho? I also needed to setup one Master instance and one slave instance to be redundant.
I use Nginx Proxy Manager as a reverse proxy even with Cloudflared tunnels. In Cloudflared I just forward "service.name.me" to "service.name.me" and thus i can access the same address from inside and outside, and if i'm inside i stay in the local network. At first I had one instance of Nginx PM to rule them all, but since i wanted to close all ports in my vms, I'm in the process of installing one instance of NPM in each VM/machine and let it handle the reverse proxying from there with no ports exposed (just the proxy ports, of course).
I backup all my Proxmox VMs to Proxmox Backup Server hosted in my NAS and using NAS storage. But since this is not a real backup if ever my server AND my NAS burn for some reason, I also use Duplicati.
I foremost use Duplicati to backup my secondary server since it's running bare-metal linux. I back up all my docker config files and any important set up I want to keep and send them to my NAS via SFTP.
I do exactly the same for docker VMs (even though they are already backed in Proxmox Backup Server), and also send them to my NAS via SFTP.
On my NAS, I set up Duplicati in order to send EVERYTHING to Google Drive. It's crypted, so i'm not worried (until proven otherwise). But EVERYTHING, i mean EVERYTHING :
So this is it. Does it make sense? Can I make it better and simplier for my need? What would you do instead?

2024.05.15 14:57 xiyeeeeee Should I replace my laptop?

I have an Acer Aspire 3 (Ryzen 5 7520u, 16GB RAM DDR5, 512GB SSD), purchased in November 2023. My daily work involves running multiple PHPStorm instances, WSL, Postman, Firefox (with 10 or more tabs open), Filezilla, WhatsApp, etc., and sometimes I find my laptop running slow with 100% CPU and ram usage.
Recently, I found a refurbished ThinkPad X1 Yoga G6 (i7-1185G7, 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 4K touchscreen) priced at $480, I'm quite interested and did my research. However, I still have a few questions:
  1. Would this be an upgrade to improve my productivity? I don't play games, so I don't need a high-end graphics card.
  2. Is the ThinkPad X1 Yoga G6 as reliable as the same generation X1 Carbon?
  3. Will the touchscreen work if I install Ubuntu?
I have a desktop with an i5-10400F processor, 32GB of RAM, and 2TB of storage, which I find sufficient for my work. However, since I often need to work remotely, I need a lightweight portable laptop.
I would appreciate it if you could suggest other models that would work for me in case the X1 Yoga Gen 6 isn't suitable. Thanks in advance for your help!

2024.05.15 03:31 Pachucote Fortnite PC suddenly stopped working

Hi, recently I had to move both my wife's and my pc to another part of our room but suddenly, now her Fortnite installation doesn't work anymore. The game launches and after the splash logo, a popup appears that reads:
"A D3D11-Compatible GPU (Feature Level 11.0, ShaderModel 5.0) is required to run the engine"
The PC specs are:
And this is what I tried so far:
But nothing worked. Is the GPU dying? Fortnite and RE4 Remake are the only games that won't launch.
Any other title launches and plays smoothly, funny enough, RE4 Remake Chainsaw Demo works. Rocket League works, RE2R and RE3R works, L4D2 works, Fall Guys works. Are only those two titles which seems odd to me.
If I could get any help, that would be cool. Thanks!
Update:
Update 2: - Installed the GPU in another computer and it works, so it has to be something else. I'll try reinstalling windows

7900xtx Powercolor Red Devil VRAM crash issue
I have a 7900xtx RD gpu, great card BTW, but if I touch the VRAM in Adrenaline software to overclock in the slightest, it crashes. Currently its at 2500mhz stock. Even with the preset overclock built in the software. I am easily able to undervolt (stable for 1 week of heavy gaming at 1080mv, 500mhz min and 2500mhz max 15+ PL). I keep it at 1110-1120 mv for the most because it's the most efficient and coolest fan speeds. I have seen people discussing difference in VRAM (samsung vs hynix), and some get great results and some don't. How do I know which I have and has anyone else experienced crashes like this? If you were able to fix it, what did you do? Any insight or discussion is appreciated.
Edit* This is my current settings as I have been able to get it to work. Not sure why it is working now but I will monitor it moving forward.

2024.05.14 14:13 fatlard_buttlick Canadian student in Germany looking for laptop advice prior to purchase

As the title says, I am looking for a new laptop. My previous laptop, a Lenovo IdeaPad l340, recently stopped charging and the costs to fix the charging port are so high that I have decided to buy a new laptop rather than pay more to fix one that is four years old.
I loved that previous laptop, and am hoping to find something relatively similar, however as a student I am working on a pretty tight budget, and hoping not to spend more than $700 USD/Euros on a new one.
Importantly, I am also kind of limited in what I can buy. I am a Canadian studying in Germany, therefore I am looking for a laptop with an English keyboard and working within a time constraint in regards to how quickly I need my new laptop delivered, making it difficult to order anything overseas.
Having spent the past few days researching, I have somewhat narrowed my choices down. Currently I am mainly considering these options from a Dutch (laptops.nl) website that sells laptops with QWERTY keyboards:
Acer Aspire 5 A515-47-R87W
Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 - 82XE005DMH
HP Victus Gaming 15-fa0515nd
At this point I am leaning towards the Lenovo just because of my familiarity with the brand (though the lack of a number pad is a small issue), however I am relatively comfortable with all three options. I am looking for something that will be able to comfortably handle statistical analysis software with large datasets with relative ease, photo editing software from Affinity, as well as some limited video editing capabilities. Battery life is not such a huge concern, and although I will use the laptop to watch movies and TV, these capabilities are not so important to me.
If you have any thoughts/opinions on these products, or alternative recommendations, your input would be greatly appreciated, and help put my purchase anxiety at ease.
TLDR;
Canadian Student in Germany looking for a new laptop on a limited budget. Choices have been narrowed down, however looking for input from more knowledgeable individuals at laptops before final purchase.

2024.05.13 15:52 AdventurerDraws If my eyes hurt from both IPS screens I've tried (Xiaomi 13c+Gaomon) and the S9+ Tab, which tablet/ipad (and a gaming laptop) would be good for me? Would all IPS screens pose an issue for me? LED LCDs are fine

I've only used TFT LCD (and CRT) screens in the past, eg. my Acer laptop's LED LCD is great. Both IPS screens I worked with - a Xiaomi 13C phone (notebookcheck didn't detect any PWM on it) and a Gaomon PD 15.6" IPS FHD drawing tablet hurt my eyes, and I don't have experience with others (if I'm in the shop, I don't realize it, only after being on it for an hour at home etc., so I can't reliably test if other IPS screens are fine for me, like the S9+/S9 was fine, but at home it's uncomfortable).
At first I assumed it's due to both being Chinese brands and having low quality screens (due to being a low-budget Xiaomi phone and a cheaper, older drawing tablet), but when my eyes hurt from my new S9+ Tab I googled around and found this sub.
When I use shutter time 1/12000 on both the Gaomon and 13c, no black bars appear, however they show up on the S9+. Does that mean I have some IPS screen sensitivy in addition to PWM, or do IPS screens also hurt those with big PWMS and you need higher shutter speed to see the black bars?
If I'm fine with older TFT LED LCDs, eg. Acer Aspire notebooks and 2000s LCD monitors, what screens would work for me?
Would any of the ipads be fine, since I wanted a drawing tablet instead of the S9+ when it and both IPS screens hurt my eyes?

2024.05.13 09:27 TheAustino Does this laptop purchase make sense?

Does this laptop purchase make sense?
I recently set out to buy a new work laptop for <$500.
I have been using an ASUS C523 chromebook for the last few months, and it has always felt horribly slow.
My criteria prioritizes performance. Something than I can hook up additional monitors to, so I can run ~8-12 chrome tabs at once along with Discord. I also need to be able to have smooth video calls.
So, I decided to recently pickup a custom Acer Aspire 3 (for ~$500) with the following specs:
https://preview.redd.it/hj6cqknt850d1.png?width=961&format=png&auto=webp&s=a7aa477282acdd9d7cac6c0ef3cd680f9290e1ca
I assumed that 24gb RAM coupled with the Ryzen 7 would be more than enough for what I need. I definitely do not want to feel like my laptop is lagging my productivity ever again, but I do feel like I am missing out on some of the comforts most modern laptops now include (backlit-keyboard, fingerprint PIN, HD camera).
Is this configuration perfect for my needs?
Or, is 24GB RAM overkill considering I would appreciate some of these modern (but not super important) features. My thought is potentially downgrading to 16gb, but if this will make a reasonable difference as to the speed/performance, I do not want to risk it.
What would you do?

I turned it on and it won't do anything its just a black screen, no logo, no boot menu, no bios, no windows, absolutely nothing. Apparently people had issues on other acer devices and some people said to re flash the laptops firmware, I couldn't find the firmware anywhere online, some people said to reinstall windows but as I cant even see the bios, boot menu or even the logo that would be impossible. So the last expensive thing is too replace anything in the laptop causing it like the screen so I tried googling for screens and I cant find anything for it apart from one what was very expensive. All the other acer laptops I have don't have this problem so I don't know a way to fix it. Hopefully someone here could try to help because I really want to get this working so its not e waste.
Edit: I also have tried to plug it into an external screen with no luck either.

2024.05.11 06:22 Formal-Nail533 Lubuntu install on an old acer aspire one 1-431

Hello All,
My linux knowledge is out of date, as I haven't done anything with it in almost 10 years (and I wasn't that knowledgeable to begin with) so please bear with me.
Tonight I tried a full install of Lubuntu 20.04 LTS on my acer aspire cloudbook from a usb drive.
The try Lubuntu feature worked great. I did the normal install. I selected erase disk. I allowed it to have swap to file and selected ext4. I believe those were the only real choices I had to make. I also repeated this process two more times, just in case that was the issue. The 1st and 2nd were on the usb 2.0 port. The 3rd was from the usb 3.0 port. The usb drive is an old San Disk Cruzer.
Whenever I tried to boot up after the installs, I would see the the message: 'error: file /boot/ not found in the top left. If the usb drive was still plugged in, it would go to that. If not, it would say No Bootable Device.
I followed some of the instructions here: https://www.linuxbabe.com/command-line/how-to-use-linux-efibootmgr-examples
I was able to change the boot order and install the efi. I was not able to mount it no matter what I tried. The changes may not have affected the computer itself though, as the boot order was back to how it was on the next reboot.
I am lost. I read that the old cloudbooks can cause trouble, but I can't find a solution that works. I am open to other distros. My previous experience was with Ubuntu, which is why I went with Lubuntu. I considered Mint, Puppy, and Tiny. But I am really open to anything. Web browsing and office tools like excel and word will be the primary uses.
Ideas? Suggestions?
Thank you so very much

2024.05.11 04:04 RieFairy [United States, ~$700 to $800] Laptop for web browsing, Youtube, writing and watching things

EDIT: Ended up purchasing a factory refurbished Acer Aspire 5. It should work for what I need and want from a laptop. Thank you for the suggestions!
Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$832
Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, if they are like new or excellent, but I prefer new.
How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Decent battery life, fast, won't overheat, 17.3 inch screen.
How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not important.
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
17.3
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Only gaming I'd do on it, if it had the capacity, is visual novels or text based games. Other than that, I'd be running a text program (Open Office, etc.) and an internet browser.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Pretty low, considering it'd be visual novels and text games.
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build, won't overheat, prefer the color to be black.
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.:
