AC Condenser Replacement Advice

2024.05.19 22:36 Some_Sandwich_3106 AC Condenser Replacement Advice

I'm looking to get my current 2 ton 13 seer York condenseevaporator coil that runs on a 20 amp circuit replaced because the repair costs just doesn't make sense for this 15 year old unit. For context, the repairs that need to be done is finding/fixing a refrigerant leak, capacitor replacement, replacing chewed wires in the condenser electric panel due to mice. (range for the repairs were between $1.2k-$2.5k)
Now onto the options, I've gotten 5 quotes and they all range between $5.7k-$10.4k but I've narrowed it down to 2 options based on reviews, years in business and knowledge while talking to them during the estimate.
Option 1: Installation of 2 ton 14 SEER Carrier condenser [24SCA424] or 2 ton 16 SEER Carrier condenser [CA16NA]
Total cost for 14 seer carrier - $7,585
Total cost for 16 seer carrier - $6,885 (brand new unit from 2022 hence why it's slightly cheaper)
Option 2: Installation of 2 ton 13.8 SEER Trane XR13
Total cost - $6,350
Warranties for both are 1 year workmanship and 10 years manufacturer warranty
Questions are:
  1. Would Carrier or Trane be the better option given that the prices are fairly close or does it matter more on the contractoinstallation?
  2. Is a permit really not needed if no electrical work is being done and if it's just a replacement?
  3. For the price difference of $700, would an older 2022 16 SEER Carrier have any cons compared to a 2024 14 SEER Carrier or would it be negligible?
  4. Is there anything I'm missing that I should have on scope of works?
Existing furnace is a York.
TLDR: Carrier vs Trane for AC Condenser?
Thanks in advance!

2024.05.19 22:28 lackofabettername123 Outlets will not work, 5 more quit yesterday, no use of them before failure. Ground wires missing or not hooked up on most

I went through the troubleshooting and double checked all the fault interrupters and circuits, I unscrewed the boxes and examined the connections which are solid, I pulled a couple off and cleaned them up and put them back on to no change.
One light switch does not work as well, opened up it had five white wires in a wire nut and four black wires and a wire nut and three cut ground wires connected to nothing, the connections are solid, three sets of wires..
All of the outlets that don't work seem to be in a line or two, all towards the back end of the house, although the ones that quit working were mixed in with the ones that already didn't work but now half the house doesn't work, but one of the light outlets in that area does work. An electrical tester seems to show intermittent current at some of the outlets but mostly nothing.
I'm looking for what else I can check, any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks.

2024.05.19 22:04 Lucca051087 PSU not powering on MOBO for BIOS flash

Hey guys, I am upgrading from a I5 11600k + Z490 Gaming X to the 14600k + B760M Aorus Elite.
I am trying to flash the BIOS via QFlash Plus but I'm running into some issues. Firstly my PSU is a 700W modular power supply. It is working just fine with my current setup (11600k+Z490). I plug in the 24 pin and the 8pin CPU cables onto the Mobo and power on the PSU. Some lights around the Chipset heatsink flash but then I get no life whatsoever.
This is the second Mobo I'm getting this issue. The first one was identical and I returned and got this new one but the issue remained.
The Mobo is getting power because I can charge my phone through the USB port. I am very positive that the Mobo is not the problem since it's the second one (brand new). The PSU is also working because the last system is still running just fine. I have checked and rechecked the cables. The modular cables are plugged in correctly and I am plugging the PSU in on the wall. I even tried different tensions (here in Brazil some homes have outlets that are 127V and others 220V.
Can someone give me some light?

2024.05.19 21:32 Deathangel141 How do I start my career?

Hi! I'm in my early 20s and I want to become a lineman, my knowledge starts and ends at wiring outlets and breakers.
what can I do to get my career started? I assume I'll need to do some kind of apprenticeship, but where could I start? I don't know where to begin.
Any good books I could read up on to expand my knowledge? I don't want to be completely lost when I start my apprenticeship.

2024.05.19 21:06 lackofabettername123 Outlets do not all work, 6 more quit the day before despite not being used. Checked the obvious

The outlets seem to be wired securely still.
There is one sort of breaker on the outlet the refrigerator hooks up too, that was still working, there are two white buttons that I pressed and that stopped working as well. They are two white buttons that you cannot read them I imagine they are reset and test however but not the red and green.
The only other thing is the outlets have a screw for ground but most do not have a ground wire, some have it but it is not hooked up, a light switch has four black wires in a nut, five white wires in a nut, and three Cut ground wires not hooked up. I don't know if I should connect to all three of the ground wires and tie it to the terminal on the green screw.
What else could I possibly check though? There is no wall switch, no cfgi other than the refrigerator one and that was working while the others had already been broken. Could be missing ground wires have tripped the whole line of outlets and a light switch? No trip to breakers, no tripped cfgi. A tester does not read any of the Outlets or wires to them as hot?
Any help or suggestions on where to start would be greatly appreciated. I'm going through websites but I'm not finding anything and now with the refrigerator circuit tripped I need it back on.

2024.05.19 21:04 Silly-Echidna8021 Intermittent failure, need advice

The outlet in this photo is on the same circuit as the ceiling fixture visible outside the sliding door. The fixture is controlled by the middle switch in the set of three. There is an exterior outlet on the opposite side of the wall from the one in the photo.
Sometimes the fixture works and sometimes it doesn’t. When it isn’t working, neither are the two outlets. I believe these are on the end of the circuit furthest from the breaker(upstream?), because other outlets on the circuit remain functional.
I have replaced both outlets and the fixture. Everything appears to be wired properly. I have not yet replaced the switch, but that’s next.
There doesn’t seem to be any particular pattern to the failure. Any thoughts on why this would be happening? If it is the switch, would the outlets be affected?

2024.05.19 20:36 NecessaryCurrency941 Extra red wire in capped off box - can I still install a functioning outlet?

Hey all, I’m a new homeowner working on cleaning up the converted garage.
This box was left open with the wires just taped up, but I would really like to add in a working outlet here if I can.
I’m wondering what this fourth red wire on the right side is? Ive worked on swapping out the outlets throughout the house but this is my first time encountering an extra red.
Would I be able to install an outlet like normal & just cap off the red wire? Or should I attach the red in combo with the black? I’ve been doing some research on here but nothing quite matches up w this scenario.
For reference there is only one switch in the converted garage which goes to an overhead light (no fan), and this opened capped off wire box is about 6 feet away from the functioning outlet on the same wall. The other outlet functions even with the light switch off.
Any advice is truly appreciated. Cheers!

2024.05.19 20:30 Plenty-Plane-4912 My solution to the startup blinking problem

My solution to the startup blinking problem
I planned on switching my led strip on and off by switching the outlet it is connected to on and off. Because it would flash 3 times in rgb before settling on the lastly used color I couldn’t do that. The strip is under my ceiling so switching it on and off using the button on the controller wasn’t an option. So I soldered two wires on the buttons leg and when I touch them together the result is the same as if I pressed the button. Now everything left to do is to print some kind of enclosure to stick next to the light switch to house a button.

2024.05.19 20:07 _youneverknow_ Conduit sizing question: 220V ground wire necessary with EMT?

I'm roughing in for my kitchen renovation, piping in EMT conduit from panels to boxes through my basement.
All of this will be thoroughly reviewed by my electrician :) , but he's in demand and I don't want to bother him until I know what I'm talking about.
I'm using SouthWire's fill calculator to size conduit. For a 220V appliance, does the EMT itself serve as the ground? If I need four wires instead of three I'm going to have to upsize some existing conduit :/ .
I'm in Chicago if there are any bizarre code hoops to jump through for my safety :) , thanks for any help.

2024.05.19 19:58 lackofabettername123 Half of wall outlets do not work, wiring is secure, how to troubleshoot? Three worked yesterday and not today despite little to no use. Another six or so did not already work.

I went through a couple of internet articles and checked everything they mentioned, no ground fault or circuit fault interrupter is tripped, Breakers are on, no wall switch activating the outlets.
But some of the Outlets are missing a ground wire, I think I can set my own ground wire up connecting it to a piece of metal, and three of the outlets worked yesterday and did not work today despite 0 to near zero use of the outlets. There is no electricity running to them when I checked with a tester. I do have a multimeter as well if that helps.
The old tenant was paranoid and pulled a lot of wires from like the stove and thermostat and half of the outlets are loose where perhaps she yanked on them or something. But I checked the connections and they are good although some are missing a ground wire completely.

Bathroom Fan - semi new install, will this work?
hi team.
installing a bathroom fan in a closet, where we hang dry stuff. The wall where this is happening, used to have a kitchen there, so there is an existing vent that is ducted to the outside already ( 2 90degree turns, one immediately, the other one to get to the side of the house and out).
The issue: how do i wire this? i am a electrical noob, there is a power outlet that has no use at all (again, this was a kitchen, now a closet) right there, but no switch for the fan. can i just take out the power outlet, put a switch in and wire to the fan, close the box opening, done?
this is the fan that is going in i will have to make the duct smaller to fit the intake on the fan, which hopefully is something that is not very hard.
thanks in advance for the help - as always. <3

Story Summary:
After averting two Apocalypses in a row, Crowley and Aziraphale finally secure their much deserved retirement together, settling down in their dream cottage in the South Downs, just like they always wanted. Their relationship and their quiet domesticity are perfection; the s*x... even better.
Until an unfortunate incident reveals that Crowley has a dirty little kink.
When Crowley accidentally shocks himself on a neighbour's electric fence, he realises he might have a bit of a problem on his hands. It should be embarrassing really. How is he supposed to enjoy his long, quiet, sultry retirement with his partner, if the only way he can get off is by electrocuting himself?
Luckily for him, he's got the perfect partner willing to help him explore the wild and wonderful world of electro-stimulation.
Story excerpt:
“Well, drat,” Aziraphale huffed, glancing at the little white box in his hands. “I’m sorry darling… but I suppose this disappointment might have been expected. The guides did say that this machine was a fairly decent option for beginners of the practice…”
“Yep,” Crowley replied, popping the ‘p’ before shrugging a shoulder dismissively. “Funny that, the demon recreationally electrocuting himself didn’t get the same rush he did from the newbie tickler box. Who would have thought?”
Sighing heavily, Crowley glanced down at the floor where the rest of their purchase had been spread out at Aziraphale’s disposal. Off to Aziraphale’s side, he could see the other machine they’d yet to try, the “E-Stim SENSi-Wave”, sitting small and unassuming on the plush rug. As he glared at the box in accusation, Crowley’s mind wandered over the whole ordeal, the money they’d miraculously conjured up for the whole set up, and the long anticipation they’d endured until their purchase had arrived. It had all seemingly led to nothing. If forks in toasters was the highlight of his sxual exploration, perhaps it was best if he simply packed in the notion and went back to their more traditional sx lives. At least they would both be satisfied, relatively speaking.
“Ugh, well…that was a waste,” Crowley grumbled at last, twisting his limbs where they were slung over the arms of the chair. “I can’t imagine the other device is going to wow me any more than that little buzz box. Might as well just untie me and we’ll forget the whole thing.” Hesitating, Crowley glanced down at the pout crossing Aziraphale’s face, and he offered him a reassuring smile. “Oi, don’t give me that look, angel. I really appreciate that you were willing to try this for me. S’just not meant to be. I promise no more fussing with the wiring. You kept your end of the deal, and I’ll keep mine, just like we said.”
Aziraphale shook his head in response, reaching up to brush a hand over Crowley’s jaw. “Now let’s not be too hasty. We haven't tested the other one yet. Perhaps this little thing will surprise us both.” Aziraphale smiled up at Crowley, his eyes soft with loving understanding. “It’s worth a try. And if it doesn’t work then we will at least know.”
Crowley listened to his angel’s logic, a small smirk dancing across his lips; it was comforting to see Aziraphale’s optimism, and for a moment, Crowley felt his own rise in agreement. Turning his head, he pressed a small kiss to Aziraphale’s palm as he finally nodded in assent. “Alright, fine. Let’s give it a shot before my bloody legs fall asleep like this.”
Beaming up at his demon, Aziraphale then turned his attention to the forgotten stim-box at his hip. Taking a moment to plug in the leads still stuck to Crowley’s inner thighs, he carefully adjusted the cables before double checking that the power supply was still plugged into the outlet and that there were no kinks or bends in the cord to cause an unfortunate short to occur. Once he was certain that everything was set to rights, the angel quickly parked himself back in front of Crowley’s chair, holding up the little box with a hopeful smile. “Alright then, darling. Let’s get supercharged then, shall we?”

Wiring for solid plywood walls
Hi all, How did you do your inside wiring with solid plywood walls? Our build has 3/4” plywood walls. How did you run wiring so it is aesthetically pleasing. I know the outlets will have to be surface mounted (not a fan personally but no other choice). I’m not worried about the roof mounted items since we can run the wires through the roof. My main concern is I want this to look as clean as possible, and not so much like a home build. I’ve included some pictures of the current build and the walls. This trailer base was purchased from Vintage Technologies, only thing we’ve added so far is the galley wall. Any suggestions would be great!

2024.05.19 17:21 eric_n_dfw Adding Colorlogic Module to Hayward Prologic panel, do I need to rewire?

Adding Colorlogic Module to Hayward Prologic panel, do I need to rewire?
I have a ~7 year old ProLogic panel on my pool with a pair of 4" Colorlogic LED lights, one in the pool and the other in the attached spa. The pool builder connected the pool light to the "Lights" block and the spa light to "Aux1".
I just picked up a used AQL-COLOR-MODHV Colorlogic Module and followed the instructions to install it. I did the menu reset and "find lights" functions but am having some issues. The first time I did ran the "find lights", it found only the pool light. I did another reset and find lights and then if said if found 0 lights. The pool light button still works to toggle the light on and off but it's status LED is permanently illuminated, and the display now says "ColorLogic Lights All White On" (or Off) when I press the button. The spa light (on button aux 1) still acts like it always did.
My questions are:
  1. Do I need to re-wire the Spa Light to be on the same circuit as the pool light in order for the ColorLogic controller to see it or maybe is there some software configuration to group it up?
  2. Why would it stop finding the pool light on subsequent reset/find lights runs?
UPDATE: adding picture of the panel for reference.
UPDATE 2: I believe I've figured it out, see comments and please reply if you think I've done anything incorrectly.

2024.05.19 17:19 AdmirableEggplant919 Blocked receptacles in fiber optic cabinet?

Novice here. Our office is now the baby’s room so I need to relocate our modem. Our apartment is filled with phone jacks and no Ethernet ports (except the one in the baby room). They have cat5 wires so I’m aware I can convert them to Ethernet ports but my options are an already crowded living room shelf or my bedroom dresser, neither of which I’m thrilled about.
We starter wondering if we could keep it directly plugged into the cabinet in our master bedroom closet & store in there. We tested & the internet works fine, but we are having a problem with power. The receptacles seem to be blocked? Before I turn off the power and unscrew these to see what’s up I thought I’d ask: any idea why they’d be non-functional? Is this a bad idea to plug the modem directly into this area? Why have outlets here if they’re not able to be used?
Pics 1&2 are of the main cabinet. 3-5 are in an adjacent cabinet.
