2024.05.19 17:56 happycherrylaughs Graduated Alum Seeking Help To Escape Abusive Household
I am deeply thankful for the opportunities I had during my time during USC, and as I reflect back I am I was deeply appreciative that a university hear me and listened to my pleas to become Independent for financial aid purposes.
As a first generation and low income student, living under immense instability all my life, bouncing between houses, living under different roofs, almost flunking high school, and even struggling to reconcile with my parents after the events that have put me through. My dad left me at a young age, approximately 14 and 15, to move out of the country without telling me. When I was 8, my mom jumped around different states without my consent, to seek job, and literally created her own family with her husband. And, I lived with an external family, and It was so difficult, because I felt so ostracized and confused why I existed if neither my parents nor my external family loved me.
I struggled with mental health issues, which prevented me from achieving my best potential, and it was so difficult to reach out to different organizations or groups during my time at USC, from the inefficient Engemann Student Health services, from crippling clinical depression that made going to class inpossible, and a myraid of issues that prevented me from thriving in all areas of life. By focusing on one area, which were academics, I was able to graduate Phi Beta Kappa, along with the many need-based and merit-based scholarships that made it feasible to attend, but I would continue to struggle postgrad because I have no home, no family, and I no longer had the financial support of USC.
I decided to brave through a part-time job to save enough money, so I can reach out to my estranged mom who abandoned me indirectly, and I saved, saved, saved, saved, and I saved enough to buy a ticket to see her. It pained me as I purchased the air flight ticket, as an environmentalist, to buy that commerical ticket -- when deep inside I have done everything I have done to reduce as much greenhouse emissions.
And, I endured tremendous amounts of verbal and domestic abuse, becuase I wanted to switch from background in the humanities to that of STEM, and day-and-night I would sneak into multiple local libraries, on top of using the local community college tutoring services, where a kind tutor listened to my maudlin life stories, and he told me under his tutelage I would relearn all of mathematics to succeed up to Calculus 2. Under a condensed, accelerated path, I studied endlessly, reviewing every possible resource, so I could succeed. Luckily, putting the tuition under my credit card — credit I built working multiple work study jobs and part-time jobs — I managed to put the several thousands on there. I had to beg for nearby restaurants and dining hall for food to meet the demand that mathematics put me through.
In the mean time, I took on unpaid internships related to technology, and I was able to succeed in this opportunity to study at Stanford this summer toward Math51: Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus, and Modern Applications; CS106A Programming Methodology; and hopefully this Philosophy course. I hope to use this opportunity to further my education this summer, as I remain in an ambiguous anticipatory period, whether I will get off the waitlist of this graduate school program, which would foster a strongly trajectory toward a successful career to become self-independent.
I already do so much, and it has been exhausting. I have yet to tap into the Trojan Network, and I am afraid that after enduring so much silent domestic abuse, I don't know where I can live. I know this is not the happy postgrad story you wanted, but I would like help. I know what it is like for students who come from nuclear, stable families, and it follows them for the rest of their life, and I see how happy and successful they are. I have worked hard all my life, and I want to be successful.
I already worked so hard toward completing Calculus 2 and on my way to completing Calculus 3 while strongly committed to pursuing a future in STEM, with a strong opportunity to get off a waitlist. But now I hope that Trojans can please help me out by offering any paid internships/jobs, providing solid advice, or sharing financial tools/strategies/alternative funding to pay for summer classes, and other means to help me get on my feet.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. In the mean time, I am using every free resource under the sun to keep going, keep fighting, because I want to make a life I cannot stop thinking about. And, I understand how difficult it is so share my life story, so I hope you can sympathize.

Reflections: I'm super grateful and happy with my decisions. I have committed to Princeton, and it definitely is the best fit for me. College results this year were very random, but I couldn’t be more thankful to get into the #1 undergraduate university. I was worried that since most of my application was MIT-related (Research, classes, Letters of Rec, Awards, Activities), other universities would think I was going there and reject me. College results were super random and stressful, but it worked out better than I could have ever imagined. It's funny how I got waitlisted and rejected from all my target schools (Vandy, UMich, USC) but then got into most of my reach schools.
Advice for Future Applicants: Be authentic. There is no formula that gets you in. Sure, you have to do a couple of things like getting good grades and SAT scores and having some unique activities and awards, but especially for Top 10 schools, you just have to be unique and authentic. I didn't have any connections or background (like private school and college counselor) that provided me with opportunities. I was literally the first kid ever from my school to get into Princeton. I was authentic and hardworking, did stuff I enjoyed, and one thing led to another. I also spent a lot of time on essays and my application. 50% of the work is actually doing stuff, and the other 50% is showcasing it in your college application. Also, have balance in life. I had a lot of fun in high school and enjoyed the stuff I did. Live life with no regrets. Feel free to DM me.

2024.05.19 16:01 Plenty_Ordinary8361 Any advice for scholarships/grants for international students?
I only have until May 31 to accept an admission offer in an institution in Thailand. But I couldn't readily accept it because I was only offered a partial scholarship and still need to pay a lump sum of money amounting to 368,000 Thai Baht, which is about $10,500. Not to mention, my current company doesn't offer tuition reimbursement. A little background of me: I have always been an academic achiever ever since grade school up until college. I graduated last year as a Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, specializing in Structural Engineering. Here in the Philippines, we also have a national licensure exam for civil engineers, and I was one of the 10 examinees who had the highest score last November. Though I'm really proud of all my achievements, I'm aware that the quality of education in my country can't be compared to the West or even with other Asian countries like China, Japan, Thailand, etc. And not to mention, CEs are really unappreciated here with a salary of only about $250-$350/month. That's why I thought to maybe look for more opportunities abroad. I decided to enroll myself in a master's program in an international institution in Thailand (AIT) to get acquainted with the academic landscape abroad. I'm also taking it as a stepping stone to get a PhD in Japan. I have a strong desire and passion for more learning and knowledge, especially in the field of Structural Engineering, which I would really want to pursue. I am also trying to discover if I would want to be a research engineer in the future for areas in Earthquake and Wind/Typhoon Engineering. These are actually the research areas that I would want to pursue during my studies in Thailand. Before I was here, I already applied for international grants and local scholarships in our country, but because I am not a government employee or someone who has 2 years of experience, I wasn't eligible to become a scholar. I thought my outstanding GPA and my performance in the licensure exam would help me secure one, but I was wrong. And I can wait until 2026 to apply; however, I am not thriving anymore in my job, and I'm really already drained because of all the expectations that people have in me, that somehow I'm given a lot more workloads than others with the same salary. On top of that, having a good performance or being a topnotcher in the licensure exam here in our country would lead to envy in the workplace. And I am working 12 hours for most days in my job. I don't want to be depressed but somehow my circumstances might lead me to be. Any advice for scholarships/grants? T_T submitted by Plenty_Ordinary8361 to gradadmissions [link] [comments]
2024.05.19 15:34 Heavy-Cheesecake440 Post VS rejection
I’ve been rejected from a top US firm after a vacation scheme.
Throughout the scheme I got praise from grad rec, trainees, my supervisor and other partners about my personality and commitment to the scheme.
I thought I did so well that I withdrew from other firms as I was confident in converting.
This was my first VS and is my first cycle. The competition is fierce but I believed I did very well. I was the only underrepresented one in many aspects on the scheme but I did not let this stop me.
I’m happy I got to experience it but now it’s left me in this weird void of what to do next. I planned on quitting my job and doing a masters in September not possible now as I have no security of a TC after it’s completed. (From a very reputable university)
Most direct TC applications open are to firms I did Vs applications to so cannot apply or they’re US firms with an intake of 3/4 trainees. A levels are my downfall so I tend to get rejected based off of those alone. Non RG. 1st Class grade.
The people they gave the TC’s too are all Oxbridge and Durham. Most already held TC offers elsewhere. They’ve never taken on a non RG trainee so maybe I was naive to think I had a chance in the first place.
I have another VS next month but the standard of the US firm has made me not want to sell myself short going to small firm as this other VS. I will still embrace the experience and hope to get a TC.
I also have a Bar scholarship and place Jan25 start. So I have limited time to get a TC before commencing this route into law or rejecting it all together. I want to be a solicitor now and not a barrister.
Feeling like there’s no hope to get a TC and if I had a better educational background I probably would’ve converted the first VS.
I will now reject the masters offer I got for September and I’m not sure what to even do now.

2024.05.19 12:22 roadtosucc Uni Dilemma: NUS Math vs NTU TAISP
Hi everyone, I’ve been privileged to receive offers for:
NUS Math + CS Double Major with NUS Merit Scholarship
NTU DSAI with TAISP Scholarship
And I’m honestly quite torn between the 2. This is how I’m considering between the 2 choices and would appreciate some feedback!
NUS: I don’t have any experience with CS basically, and I am doing other stuff on the side such that I barely have any time to try it out before the deadline for decision (24th May). Whereas for Math, I’ve always had interest and aptitude since young, so I know I’ll be able to do well in it if I put my mind to it. So for NUS, I like how I am given the freedom to drop CS if need be. To me, I do feel that Math is a super safe choice for me, just that I am not sure how lucrative of a job I can land after graduation only with Math (without the CS major) since I am not too interested in the research side of Math. I also require accommodation as I live far from both universities and Tembusu has not gotten back to me 😭. I will be applying for hall as well in the case I choose NUS.
NTU: I am just super scared that I won’t be able to do well in DSAI as I have never tried coding before, or that I have to devote a lot of my time to catch up with others. And DSAI is super specific, I have no backup in the case I realise I don’t have the interest for it. The super specific part also translates to jobs in the future, but I’m less worried about that as TAISP does seem to offer many opportunities to its scholars. Also the fact that it is in its first year is also slightly risky to me. I am not really considering the monetary differences of the scholarship because while NTU definitely offers a better one, that are strings attached, which to me is both a good and bad thing, really just depends on how much I enjoy the course. I also know that actually DSAI consists of half Math and half CS modules, so there shouldn’t be too much differences in what I’m studying, just that I would be restricted to choosing more DS and AI modules as part of the “half CS”.
I think to summarise, the key thing I’m considering is the flexibility of dropping CS as a pro for NUS, and the potential opportunities I would receive in TAISP, and potentially more lucrative job in the future as a pro for NTU. I would really appreciate if anyone could provide me with some valuable advice! Thanks in advance and all the best to everyone else with their university applications :)

2024.05.19 11:54 elitemihi Seeking Advice on Finding a Job in Shanghai: EU Citizen with CS Background
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some realistic advice and insights on my current job search situation in Shanghai. Here’s a bit about my background and what I’m facing:
My Background: - Nationality: EU citizen
- Education: Studied in the UK for 5 years. I hold a BSc in Computer Science (First-class Honours) and an MSc in Advanced Computer Science (Merit).
- Experience: 3+ years in software development:
- 2 years at a private company
- 1 year at a government research agency working on control software for particle accelerators
- All work experience was before & during my undergrad and postgrad studies (all full-time: office, remote, and placement year).
- Relevant Languages: Fluent in English (though not a native speaker), very limited Mandarin.
Visa Situation: - Looking to stay in Shanghai for around 2 years.
- My passport doesn't allow long-stay multi-entry L visas. I’ve managed to get a 60-day single-entry L visa before (considered rare for my passport), but I’ve been told by the visa people that I can’t stay longer than 6 months within a 12-month period using short-term L visas.
- Therefore, I need to secure a work (Z) visa or, as a last resort, an X1 student visa (though scholarship applications for this year seem to be closed).
Job Search Efforts: - Applied to over 200 jobs at 100+ companies (multinationals, domestic companies, schools, etc.) in the past 2 months.
- Used multiple job platforms: LinkedIn, Indeed, GlassDoor, LaowaiCarrer, eChinaCities, HiredChina, SmartShanghai, LiePin (猎聘), and ZhiLianTuiTui (智联推推).
- Applied to a variety of positions: software-related, IT and tech support, CS/Programming & ESL teaching, customer support call centers, SEO optimization, QA/Localisation, marketing, various internships, etc.
- I've been open and flexible in my job search, willing to make sacrifices in career progression for roles I may be overqualified for or not directly related to my background.
Challenges: - Multinationals seem to only need seniors or team leads with many more years of experience and have, for the most part, ghosted me.
- Expat websites are flooded with listings for teaching jobs that have good benefits and (frustratingly) loose requirements but require native English speakers.
- Many English-related jobs (localization, proofreading, digital content creation, translation QA, user research, etc.) inexplicably require native English speakers. Despite being able to excel in these roles and achieve a high IELTS/TOEFL score if needed, I am deemed unqualified solely due to my passport.
- HR on Chinese job boards have shown a lot of interest in me, but most Chinese companies don’t seem to be currently hiring international talent.
Current Plan: - Planning to stay in Shanghai later this year for as long as my tourist visa allows, to continue job hunting in person. I am hoping that this will simplify the process and improve my chances. I will have, at most, 3 months on my L visa.
- If during that time I still don't manage to secure work, I really won't know what else to do, as I may not be issued another L visa.
My Question: I'm currently in a bind. With my background and qualifications, finding a good programming job in Europe wouldn't be too difficult. However, in Shanghai, it's been so challenging to find
any job, even those I'm grossly overqualified for, no matter how much I lower my standards regarding career progression and compensation. Although I could find a remote job, that wouldn't solve my visa issue.
Given my qualifications and experience, what are the realistic chances of finding any job in Shanghai that provides a livable wage and normal work hours? Any advice on navigating the job market or improving my odds would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone been in a similar situation or have insights on making this work?
Thank you! submitted by

2024.05.19 10:13 AutoModerator Application Results Megathread 2024
It's that time of the year where applications are beginning to close and everyone anxiously waits for their results. To reduce subreddit clutter, a master post has been created for everyone to discuss the results and ask questions. Last year's thread had live chat enabled, but this feature has since been removed from Reddit. To compensate, this post is set to automatically filter by the newest comment first, so please use it like a live chat and discuss with your fellow applicants as much as you please.
WARNING: Any posts about application results will be deleted and rerouted to this thread. FAQ
Q. When are results released? A. Results are usually released a month or so after the official application closing date. Sometimes it may take longer if you are applying to a larger consulate.
Q. How will I get my results? A. Results are usually delivered through email. Some consulates may offer it through other means, but check your emails.
Q. I missed something in my application/forgot something/want to change something but the application is closed, could this affect my results? A. Once the window for applications is closed, no changes can be made unless in a unique situation. This is a case by case basis and must be asked directly to your consulate or embassy. Whether or not this will effect your results is unknown, but the general thought process should be no effect if its legitimate.
Q. Will I get my documents back? A. No.
Q. I applied through my university, when will I get my results? A. University admissions are different than embassy. You would need to contact the university you applied to.
Q. I didn't get the interview, now what? A. If you didn't get invited to the interview, don't worry. There's many other avenues and paths to higher education in Japan. The MEXT scholarship, in particular, has the University recommended route. This method of applying is completely different from the Embassy recommendation and specific to each school. Search up MEXT Scholarship + School's Name to find out how and where to apply.
JASSO, the
Japan Student Services Organization, also offers a range of scholarships for foreign students. Refer to the Study in Japan website for other scholarship opportunities. Many large companies and banks have scholarship opportunities as well for specific fields, especially in STEM.

Let’s do Aontu today 4 topics we will talk about for fairness in comparison -Housing and cost of living -Immigration -Foreign affairs -EU (Bias warning I’m center left) On housing and cost of living: -boost social housing funding and meet the 10K annual target of affordable social housing. -Vacant site tax -Rent Caps -Traveler accommodation On Immigration: -Even Distribution of Asylum Seekers -speed up application process -Integration programs On Foreign Affairs -Pro United Ireland -Referendum within 5 years -Import ban on Brazilian and South African Agri-products On European Union No specific policies but pretty pro EU as their websites have nothing that goes against the EU at any point. Now let’s look at their leader Peader Tóibín TF for Meath West since 2011. He isn’t too controversial other than his stance on abortion which he’s against. He is a ex Sinn Fein who left due to the Abortion Reform vote. He describes himself as Socially Conservative and center left economically. submitted by Ok-Recover-4130 to irishpolitics [link] [comments]

2024.05.19 08:09 blueberrycaek Do any former students/seniors of UNSW "Master of Animation & Visual Effects" have a copy of fee structure of the program (a detailed fee payment every semester)?
I got offered to the aforementioned program (I am international from Malaysia) for Term 1 February 2025, and it is time for me to search several sponsorships/scholarships as early as possible just in case. And this one sponsorship (GrepMARA) needed a "fee structure" for the whole 2 years study; payment fee of each semester. A mandatory requirement to submit it in PDF file only to them.
I thought the fees are already mentioned in the offer letter itself, but it seems GrepMARA needed detailed info; like in some sort of table, if I googled what "fee structure university course" look like is right.🤔 Oh and must include all elective subjects as well.
I looked through UNSW website for so many times on fees section and... it is a bit confusing here and there. So I emailed UNSW last week asking the same thing, but they haven't reply yet.
And the GrepMARA application will soon close this upcoming Friday (24 May 2024 afternoon at our timezone). That particular fee structure is the only document left to be submitted.😅
Hope to hear from you all soon! Any help is appreciated and thank you! 🙇♂️

2024.05.19 07:41 VolarRecords Is Sean Kirkpatrick part of The Program? And that's why he took the role at AARO to say it doesn't exist?
I've been running this idea in my head over and over the past week or so after deciding to look at Sean Kirkpatrick's bio as Director of AARO based on his CV history and the now-infamous photo of him in the 2018 meeting that was leaked by Brandon Fugal of Skinwalker Ranch that Kirkpatrick claimed in his interview with Stephen Greenestreet he didn't attend. You can find a copy of that bio here. I couldn't put anything together until I saw the below tweet from Klaus on X/Twitter via his Patterns Tell Stories Podcast handle from almost two weeks ago taken from an official OSTI.gov document. OSTI is the U.S. Department of EnergyvOffice of Scientific and Technical Information. Here is the abstract, which states: The International Biological and Chemical Threat Reduction Program at Sandia National Laboratories is developing a 15 - year technology road map in support the United States Government efforts to reduce international chemical and biological dangers . In 2017, the program leadership chartered an analysis team to explore dangers in the future international chemical and biological landscape through engagements with national security experts within and beyond Sandia to gain a multidisciplinary perspective on the future . This report offers a high level landscape of future chemical and biological dangers based upon analysis of those engagements and provides support for further technology road map development. The link for the abstract above will also take you to a 35-page report. Here are its Table of Contents. After receiving his Ph.D. in Physics in 1995, he subsequently took a postdoctoral position at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, investigating laser-induced molecular vibrations of high explosives under an AFOSR program. (AFOSR is the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. This is their website.) In 1996, he was offered a National Research Council Fellowship at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D.C. investigating novel solid-state lasers for the Department of the Navy. In 1997, he was recruited by the Air Force Research Laboratory to build an Ultrafast Laser Physics Lab to investigate nonlinear optics, novel ultrafast spectroscopic methods, and nonlinear micro/nano-fabrication techniques for the Air Force. In 2003 he was offered a program manager position in the National Reconnaissance Office, and converted to CIA in 2005. In 2007, he was assigned as Chief Technology Officer in a joint CIA-DIA program office, where he later became division chief as a DIA officer. (I think this might be where Grusch's comments in the video below come into play.) In 2010 he was asked to serve as the space control portfolio manager for the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, Space and Intelligence, Office of the Secretary of Defense. ( Christopher Mellon worked for the Office of the Secretary of Defense from January 1997 to December 2002.) In 2012 he returned to DIA, and served as the Defense Intelligence Officer for Scientific and Technical Intelligence, serving as the Department of Defense’s counterpart to the National Intelligence Manager for Science and Technology until 2016. Towards the end of his tenure as DIO/S&TI, Dr. Kirkpatrick served on special assignment to the Principal Deputy Director National Intelligence leading the Intelligence Community’s support to the Joint Interagency Combined Space Operations Center. From 2016 to his current assignment, Dr. Kirkpatrick served in a variety of no-fail roles including Deputy Director of Intelligence, US Strategic Command; Director, National Security Strategy, National Security Council; Deputy Director of Intelligence and the DNI Representative for USSPACECOM. The USSPACECOM Intelligence Enterprise was the fifth organization he has been the IC lead for establishment. His most recent assignment was as Chief Scientist at DIA’s Missile and Space Intelligence Center. After retiring as the Director of AARO, Kirkpatrick immediately went to the Oak Ridge Laboratory, which, along with Wright-Patterson and Area 51, is directly at the heart of the UFO history and mystery. Here is his bio listed at Oak Ridge's website. https://www.ornl.gov/staff-profile/sean-m-kirkpatrick Here's David Grusch on Joe Rogan talking about Remote Viewing, Garry Nolan's much-discussed ideas about the caudate putamen as an emergent property of the brain and human consciousness, and its study by the CIA, DIA and the Army vis-a-vis Remote Viewing. https://x.com/patternspodcast/status/1727045285694898658 submitted by VolarRecords to UFOs [link] [comments]
