Thaumical precious metal alloys in my world
My world of fantastic science fiction is based on the real world, but with the addition of magic and thaumaturgy as an additional powerful branch of arts and techniques.
The historical course of my world is similar to the historical course of the real world, but there are sciences derived from magic. Runic engineering studies the interaction of glyphic circuits and geometric shapes imbued with magic with reality. Thaumaturgy and the science of aspects study the converging aspects of matter and its manipulation to obtain new materials and artifacts without classical chemical formulas. Arcanology studies the functioning and principles of so-called spells, incantations, and enchantments. Etcetera.
Science predominates overall, and while it has taken some time, it has swallowed magic, at least partially. There are still many things unknown about the functioning of magic. There are many things that work and have been obtained through trial and error, but whose intrinsic mechanisms are unknown. There are hypotheses derived from quantum physics, of course, but unconfirmed, or impossible to confirm.
But that's not the point.
In my world, just like in the real world, metallurgy has played a very important role. Without metallurgy, we wouldn't have weapons, machines, computing, electricity... we wouldn't have many things. Without metallurgy, they wouldn't have them either, and they wouldn't have thaumaturgy or many enchanted objects they employ.
Within the vast domain of thaumic metallurgy, the most prominent metals are undoubtedly the precious metals: copper, silver, and gold. Throughout the history of my world, these three metals have held an undisputed position of relevance in thaumaturgy. While iron and mercury have also been employed in thaumaturgic practice (the Thaumonomicon, one of the oldest works on thaumaturgy known, mentions thaumium and alchemical brass, two magical metals derived from iron), copper, silver, and gold have demonstrated unparalleled enchantability and magical versatility.
These precious metals have not only been used in the creation of magical objects throughout history but have also been the subject of numerous alchemical experiments in transmutation and aspectual manipulation, although most of these attempts have been largely unsuccessful and have sometimes led to unintended consequences.
In recent times, there has been a growing interest in the use of other precious metals such as platinum, rhodium, and osmium in thaumaturgy. However, this interest is still in its nascent and limited stage compared to the study and practice related to copper, silver, and gold. Thaumaturgy related to these less conventional metals is still to be fully developed, and their magical potential is far from fully understood.

The three main precious metals of interest

Copper has been a frontline choice in creating alloys that function as conductors and catalysts of magic throughout the ages, thanks to its impressive capacity to be enchanted. Furthermore, it stands out for its resistance to aspectual essences and its ability to act as an effective aspectual insulator. Even in ancient times, bronze armor decorated with primitive runes and magical glyphs not only rivaled but surpassed the resilience and tenacity of the finest steel armor of the later medieval period.
Today, this metal remains relevant in the creation of alloys such as molybdocopper, orichalcum, hepatizon, and manganin, which are used in the manufacturing of special munitions. These bullets, engraved with specific enchantments, acquire attributes and particular effects that make them highly effective in a wide variety of situations. The versatility of copper as a magical material makes it a valuable and sought-after option for practitioners of magic and thaumaturgy worldwide.
Silver, on the other hand, also stands out for its capacity to store magic. It has been employed in various ways in the realm of thaumaturgy and magic. One of its most prominent applications is its use in coating weapons and armor made of steel. Silver can be fused with this material to enhance the enchantments present in the weapons and armor, or even to directly manufacture weapons and armor imbued with its own magical properties.
Furthermore, silver has traditionally been associated with protection against supernatural entities and has been used to create a wide variety of protective amulets and talismans. Its teratocidal properties make it an essential component in the manufacturing of specialized weapons and ammunition designed for the hunting and elimination of creatures such as therianthropes, demons, and other supernatural beings. The famous silver bullets are an iconic example of this type of ammunition, known for their effectiveness in confrontations against beings of malign or magical nature. Silver, with its versatility and magical power, has earned a prominent place in the arsenal of magic practitioners and thaumaturges worldwide.
Gold, on the other hand, stands out as one of the most suitable metals for enchantment and magic absorption. Despite these qualities, its use in thaumaturgy has been limited due to its scarcity, high value, and the difficulty in stabilizing its magical properties. Creating enchanted objects from gold requires highly advanced and stabilized infusion altars, or the use of very specific alloys that can enhance its magical manipulation.
Despite these limitations, various gold alloys have sparked special interest among thaumaturges and alchemists worldwide. Below, we will detail some of these alloys, exploring their unique characteristics and potential applications in the field of magic and thaumaturgy.
Copper, silver and gold...

Tychereal gold

Tychereal gold encompasses a set of gold alloys that possess the unique property of influencing the luck of the bearer. This capability is achieved through the infusion of the "probabilitas" aspect into the alloys or through the inscription of specific enchantments. However, it is important to note that the effect on the bearer's luck is subtle.
In certain regions of Central, Southern, and Eastern Asia, red gold alloys, which contain a high copper content, are employed for this purpose because culturally, the color red is believed to bring good luck in these areas. These alloys, when enchanted or infused with "probabilitas," appear to have a greater impact on the bearer's luck, although their effect is temporary and tends to fade over time. Additionally, these alloys are prone to mild oxidation and corrosion, leading to the loss of their desired tychereal property.
However, the most effective tychereal alloy is known as "leprechaun gold," invented in Ireland during the Middle Ages. Leprechaun gold is a lime-green-toned alloy, primarily composed of gold with additions of silver and tin, along with traces of cadmium, and with high amounts of "probabilitas" aspect. Although scientific trials have shown that this alloy has a significant and generally positive impact on the bearer's luck, it presents a serious contraindication: cadmium, a heavy metal known to be toxic and carcinogenic.

Royal thaumium

Royal thaumium, a distinguished and valuable alloy, differs from common thaumium, ancient thaumium or, simply, thaumium (an amalgam of wrought iron impregnated with praecantatio). This exceptional compound is a combination of gold and aluminum impregnated with praecantatio.
By fusing gold with aluminum in an approximate mass ratio of 79:21, purple gold is obtained, a brittle intermetallic compound with an intense magenta color. When this purple gold is impregnated with large amounts of praecantatio, it becomes royal thaumium.
The term "royal" in its name is attributed to its high production cost and its original association with royalty and divinity. Although it shares similarities in appearance and qualities with thaumium based on iron, the properties of royal thaumium are even more pronounced. It can store approximately 53 times more magic than iron-based thaumium, acts as an extremely impermeable aspectual insulator to essences, and possesses a tremendous enchanting capacity. However, it is important to note that royal thaumium is extremely fragile compared to its iron-based counterpart.
Royal thaumium was initially discovered and crafted by alchemists in the late 18th century when the first samples of aluminum were successfully extracted, which at that time were considerably more expensive than gold due to the difficulty of obtaining it. During the early to mid-19th century, this alloy was widely used in the manufacturing of cores for high-power magic wands. Although it has been replaced by more economical thaumic materials today, royal thaumium is still appreciated in certain classic magic circles, acquired by purists and collectors of magical objects.

Aurallium

Within the realm of modern metallurgy, quasicrystals have emerged as structural forms that, unlike conventional crystals, are ordered but not periodic. Most quasicrystals discovered to date are metallic and exhibit symmetries that defy traditional crystalline conventions, such as decagonal and icosahedral shapes.
These quasicrystals are particularly intriguing in the field of thaumaturgy due to their ability to harbor large densities of a degenerate form of the "ordor" aspect, known as "auratio."
Among the most relevant quasicrystals in thaumaturgy are dodecaedrites, quasicrystalline alloys generally composed of aluminum or rare earth metals, infused with huge amounts of praecantatio. These dodecaedrites have the capacity to store massive amounts of magic, surpassing conventional thaumic alloys by thousands of times, making them ideal for the manufacturing of high-powered magical objects and disruptive antimagic munitions.
The term "aurallium" refers to a group of dodecaedrite-based alloys of gold quasicrystals, such as the gold-gallium-terbium alloy AC and other alloys M,X)85.7RE14.3 (M = Ag, Au, X = Al, Ga, In, RE = Er, Lu). However, the most notable of these alloys is "pure aurallium," composed of pure gold impregnated with large amounts of "auratio" aspect essence. This material forms dodecahedral, icosahedral, and tricontahedral crystals of a pale orangish-golden hue with celestial blue highlights.
Pure aurallium is metastable, meaning its quasicrystalline structure can collapse under certain extreme conditions to form amorphous gold, releasing energy and magic in the process. Additionally, this alloy has the ability to induce ordering and crystallization of surrounding materials when magic is applied to it, which could be utilized for various purposes, such as manufacturing enhaced wand cores for specific spells, or negentropic weapons like the "ordor ray."
Aurallium icosahedral quasicrystal.
Nuclear tests conducted by North Korea using this material, whose documentation has been obtained and released by the espionage forces of Acheron (an organization tasked with containing and eliminating supernatural threats), yield terrifying results. Atomic weapons doped with big amounts of aurallium generates negentropic fields that destroy all organic tissue within a radius several times larger than the blast radius and the lethal neutron radius. Animal and plant tissues liquefy and reorganize into perfectly ordered crystals of amino acids, phosphates, and carbohydrates imbued with high-purity aspect essences that may continue reacting dangerously with the environment, potentially producing flux, taint seeds and void gaps. All exposed rock and metal recrystallize into large amalgams of pure single crystals of various pure materials, forming ordered giant minimalist structures. And exposed water is aetheralized into pure aqua aspect that permeates and destructively alters any exposed material.
Surprisingly, despite the high thaumaturgy and technology involved in the production of pure aurallium and aurallium alloys, traces of aurallium have been found in well-preserved ancient legendary artifacts of high power, although the origin of such traces of aurallium is likely accidental or non-conciouss, this explains some of the astonishing qualities of these arcane artifacts.

2024.05.19 05:45 ConcertNo2571 I’m scared I may have cancer

Do I have cancer?
I found out by accident, MRI to assess old back injury picked up some extra findings in the background, and I have a large fibroid in my uterus and 4 masses/lesions on my liver. I have a referral to the James Cancer Center for gastroenterology, was told my case needed the “advanced” team because my “case is too complicated”. At the same time, I’m told benign lesions pop up all the time. Ok, these aren’t uncommon, but I need the “advanced team” which is booked out until the end of August?! I entered the abdominal MRI results for my abdomen in an AI ChatBox. I’ll post end of the response below since I can’t type it all out or share my screenshots below.
My repeat MRI isn’t scheduled yet, but is due mid July for the 3 month follow up scan.
I guess I just don’t know if I need advice or to vent.
“Overall, the presence of multi liver lesions with varying liver enhancement patterns raises concerns for both benign and malignant etiologies.”
Here’s the report.
  1. There are 4 discrete liver lesions demonstrating mild T2 hyperintensity as well as avid arterial phase enhancement. More delayed postcontrast sequences demonstrate continued enhancement, however, to a lesser degree. The lesions demonstrate very mild precontrast T1 hypointensity as well. The lesions are indeterminate with potential considerations including atypical focal nodular hyperplasia as well as multiple hepatic adenomas. Recommend short follow-up in 3 months which can be performed with contrast enhanced MRI using Eovist contrast. If tissue sampling is needed, image-guided biopsy of one of the lesions may be amenable. 2. No lymphadenopathy. 3. No biliary ductal dilatation.
FINDINGS: Right hepatic lobe elongated measuring 21 cm craniocaudally. No obvious hepatic steatosis. There are multiple, at least 4, enhancing lesions within the liver which demonstrate mild T2 hyperintensity. The larger lesion centered within the more lateral left hepatic lobe, segment 2 measures approximately 3.5 x 2.8 cm on image 9 of sequence 12 with a slightly more central focus of increased T2 signal on image 9. On postcontrast sequences the lesions demonstrate avid enhancement during the arterial phase with an area of central hypoenhancement particularly seen within the segment 2 lesion. Lesion within the right hepatic dome on image 12 for reference measures 1.6 x 1.5 cm on image 12 of sequence 18 and lesion more inferiorly in the posterior right hepatic lobe on image 30 measures 3.6 x 3.0 cm. Within the left hepatic lobe, segment 4 is an enhancing lesion measuring 1.4 x 1.4 cm on image 29. The lesions demonstrate continued enhancement on the more delayed sequences where they enhance slightly higher than background liver parenchyma, however, not as intensely as seen on the arterial phase sequence. Incidental nonenhancing cyst within the periphery of the left hepatic lobe on image 21 of sequence 24 measuring approximately 0.4 cm in size. Gallbladder overall unremarkable on this exam. No biliary duct dilatation identified. Pancreas, adrenal glands, and the spleen are unremarkable. Both kidneys are unremarkable in appearance. There is no bulky abdominal lymphadenopathy or ascites identified. Portal venous vasculature is grossly patent.

2024.05.18 19:10 Prior_Piano9940 SE only marketed Rebirth to existing fans and that was a huge mistake

I know everyone wants to attribute the sales disappointment to exclusivity, it being a sequel, etc. but I think marketing might have been the biggest downfall to its success.
Some anecdotes:
It being a sequel is not as significant of a problem. Casual audiences don’t care about that. I have a friend who I saw Hobbit 2 with despite her not seeing the first hobbit. For some reason the marketing got through to her and she showed interest. I know people who jumped into game of thrones in the later seasons and then went back to catch up. There are so many anecdotes. Some people started mass effect with the second game. Etc etc.
Now onto marketing, very anecdotal I know since it’s a sample size of 1 but I showed my gf the first 2 or 3 trailers and she was like no way. I knew she’d love it but the trailers did nothing for her. In fact, they made her actively disinterested. Me on the other hand, was like omg it’s this or that over and over again. To me, seeing red in a soldier uniform is amazing. To her it’s stupid and confusing. Here’s the sad part though…
She ended up watching large parts of the game sitting next to me while doing homework or paid work and even sometimes not doing anything at all. She was really into it, to the point where the next time she watched, I would catch her up to what happened and she would listen intently. And that red 13 soldier scene? She loved it.

2017 came and went with no notable missions. It was a busy year for NASA on the ground, however. New contracts and buildings, the re-election of Obama, and the announcement that the ISS would be retired in 2028. After many a few appeals to congress, NASA gained continued funding for both Orion and a future joint space station with the ESA and JAXA. Boeing’s Starliner was delayed into 2019, and the Crew Dragon would not be ready until 2020. So it was that Orion 3 would be the biggest mission of 2018. And it was no wonder why. Humanity would be returning to the Moon for the first time since Apollo 17, and NASA was ready to promote it.
The mission was a cultural milestone in itself – it was the first time NASA would stream an Orion mission in its entirety online, and it became popular for large internet celebrities and news hosts to talk about the upcoming mission. They would be paid, of course. For the first few steps, whoever would take them, a combined audience of ~1,000,000,000 would be watching them.
Astronaut selection was tricky. NASA needed to choose a crew that had experience, but were limited in that not many of their astronauts were both experienced flight-ready. Most of NASA Astronaut Group 19 were retired (or about to), but one stuck out to the Astronaut Office: Christopher Cassidy. Much like Wiseman, he was a former Chief of the Astronaut Office, and had two flights under his belt, both Shuttle and Soyuz. He would be assigned as Mission Commander. Another that stuck out was James Dutton. He was a pilot aboard the Shuttle, and endeared to the former shuttle personnel and many NASA employees. He was selected as pilot. Robert S. Kimbrough, another Shuttle astronaut, was selected as flight engineer. Jack D. Fischer was selected as payload specialist for the mission, rounding out the crew with three NASA Astronaut Group 19 astronauts and one NASA Astronaut Group 20 member.
During training, ideas for callsigns were thrown around. NASA wanted something symbolic of their progress and the future, politics would drive them to name it something patriotic, while the public would be largely indifferent. Except a minority: the Star Trek fans. Much like with the Space Shuttle of late, they had campaigned for Orion to be named after the USS Enterprise. In the end, it would be left up to the crew to decide the names. And you can likely guess what they chose. So it was the Orion capsule for this mission would be named Enterprise, and the Altair to be named Polaris. After a long eight months of training, production, processing, paperwork, calculations and other assorted work, the mission was ready. The Ares I was rolled out to the pad, with it Polaris, and the booster launched half past three in April 2018.
But the successful launch of Polaris coincided with the news of the contracting of the Space Exploration Vehicle (SEV), to none other than JAXA. It would be complete by around 2022, meaning that it would be utilized on a mission no earlier than Orion 6. In exchange for this, a seat on Orion 4 was given. The SEV would be landed by a separate Altair lander. Contracting for the non pressurized Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) also fell to JAXA, this time being light enough to be unfolded from one of Altair’s cargo quadrants in its descent stage. The LRV, which had the majority of its work done, would be ready by 2020. This meant it would fly on Orion 4.
As Polaris orbited, Enterprise was rolled out to the pad. Much like Orion 2, there would be a large crowd to view the launch. Present was former President John McCain, Vice President Joe Biden, Chief of Staff Dennis McDonough, Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, three cabinet members, 30 mayors, 21 governors, 55 ambassadors, and 350 congressmen. A viewing public of almost 150,000 and 2,000 media representatives and personalities also attended.
After final check ups on Polaris, a go-ahead signal was given from Houston. Five minutes later, the launch countdown began. Liftoff began at 2:33 PM EST May 12, 2018. Three minutes into the flight, Kimbrough’s vitals flatlined. After a short panic from the flight surgeon, Kimbrough reported back that the sensors had failed. The fault was recorded, and the flight continued. By 2:41, Enterprise had entered its parking orbit.
For about an hour the systems were monitored, checked, and checked again. Polaris and Enterprise showed nominal performance, and procedure for relighting the EUS’s engines began.
After a short burn, Enterprise began its approach towards Polaris. After its approach, Enterprise circled her lander to check for damage or any potential issues. After this, Dutton maneuvered and docked with Polaris. Cassidy and Fischer opened Polaris’s main hatchway and conducted an inspection of the systems. After a short meal, the EUS fired its last burn to put Enterprise and Polaris in a Trans-Lunar Injection (TLI). The next three days were mostly monitoring systems and conducting small course adjustments with the RCS thrusters. On May 15, Enterprise fired up its engines to insert both it and Polaris into lunar orbit.
The selected landing site was Oceanus Procellarum, a few miles off of the Apollo 12 site. Oceanus Procellarum was chosen for its relative flatness, as well as to more thoroughly inspect the region. Apollo 12 didn’t cover all bases, so Orion 3 hoped to refine the data on the site and see how the new systems reacted.
The crew were allowed to sleep, and on May 16 orbital operations began. A small telescope was installed on Enterprise to conduct surface observations. The telescope was nowhere near powerful enough to see Polaris when it landed, but it could help scope out the area. Cassidy and Kimbrough were selected for landing on the Moon, and they spent their time in orbit powering the systems and adjusting to the lander interior. May 16 also included one of the most important experiments on the mission: sunflower bulbs were carried on board, with a small amount of dirt.
This was carried in a special compartment on board Altair, but the dirt and bulb itself were carried on Enterprise. The experiment, creatively titled the Lunar Bulb Germination Experiment (LBGE), would germinate the sunflower bulbs on the lunar surface, and note any differences.
Other experiments on the mission were the Altair Specialized Experiments Package (ASEP), which included experiments ranging from solar wind to passive and active seismology. A third and equally important experiment was the Lunar Deployable Payload Module (LDPM), which would simulate the deployment of the LRV for Orion 4. These experiments were stored in the side panels of Polaris, which could be pulled down for access.
It was a lot for the first mission, but both Mission Control and the crew were prepared and confident. Overall, this experiment package would consume the majority of the seven EVAs for the astronauts. The remaining time was spent collecting samples and resting.
The landing was scheduled for around 7:00 PM EST that day. Cassidy and Kimbrough entered Polaris and gave a salute to Fischer, and sealed off from Enterprise and undocked. After clearing a distance, the deorbit burn began. Minutes later, and under almost a billion viewers’ scrutiny, Polaris touched down. The first EVA would follow a few minutes later. Cassidy stepped into the airlock, depressurized, and looked out upon the lunar surface. Viewing peaked around this time, much to NASA’s Public Relations Offices’ delight. Cassidy descended the ladder down to the lunar surface, and stepped onto the lunar surface.
“With these steps, we begin anew the exploration of our nearest neighbor, in peace and with hope for all mankind.” The immortal words by Cassidy. He looked around the surface, and waited for Kimbrough to descend. Kimbrough’s words were not as majestic - “Looks just like White Sands.” After some remarks and looking around, the two received a call from none other than President Obama, who congratulated them on the mission. Work began shortly after.
First was the deployment of the American Flag on the lunar surface. Then was the deployment of the ASEP. First was the RTG, which would power the experiments. The command station was set up with the Ion and Passive Seismometer a few feet away. After the rest were set up, the Active Seismic Experiment (ASE) began. It was a simple thumper-geophone combination, and had good results. After the experiments were tested, the crew returned to Polaris and had their rest period.
May 17 began with freeze-dried breakfast and the second EVA. This EVA would set up the Radio Antenna Stand Test Article (RASTA). RASTA was a tripod stand with a small suite of communication instruments and a dummy satellite dish. RASTA would aid the development of the Farside Radio Observing Scanning Telescopes (FROST) for Orion 5. After this was another round certifying the ASEP was functional, sample collection began. The remainder of Day 2 was checking systems and deploying the more time-consuming ASEP systems. The Solar Wind Experiment (a large sheet on a tall pole) was also set up. In orbit, Dutton fired Enterprise’s engines, altering the orbit just enough to align the capsule for docking once Polaris lifted off. Fischer did surface observations, and took many photos of the lunar far side. The last activity for Day 2 was unpacking a small retroreflector, which was placed not far off.
Day 3 would be more sample collecting and exploring the landing site. Near the site was a shallow crater about fifteen meters across. Cassidy descended the crater wall, which Houston considered a risky move. After gaining his footing, he picked up a few soil and rock samples before climbing out. It became evident this move on Cassidy’s part was worth the risk, as the samples collected would help expand knowledge and study on lunar asteroid impacts. After this Cassidy and Kimbrough returned to Polaris to store the sample bags and process data. After a routine checkup on LBGE, the crew called it a day.
Day 4 meant the deployment of the LDPM. After wrangling the pulley on the panel, Kimbrough removed the panel and, with help from Cassidy, pulled the pallet out. The pallet itself was ten feet long, but had two hinges at the front and back allowing the pallet to fit into the cargo quadrant. They detached the pallet from Polaris and tested some of the batteries and affixed parts onto it (such as the antenna and seats). Most of these parts were non-functional, and this activity was mostly a practice exercise for Orion 4. The remainder of the day was spent inside Polaris, processing and transmitting the data for NASA to work with. Kimbrough, the mission specialist, was trained with a small degree of knowledge on geology and biology. While nowhere near certified, his work with the LGBE and sample collection were invaluable.
Days 5 and 6 were like the rest: checking ASEP systems, strolling around the lander, picking up samples, and processing data. Day 6 was special, because Cassidy and Kimbrough held a live interview for major news networks. In the meantime, Fischer and Dutton conducted gamma ray and x-ray observations, surface and stellar photography, and small particle spectrometer and mass spectrometer sensing. With the research being done by Enterprise, new images could be compared with old to note and new impacts or differences. Day 7 was the last day on the Moon, and that meant one thing: packing up. Experiments and data were packed up, samples were moved into their respective locations on board Polaris, and assorted cargo were taken aboard. The SWE had its net removed and placed in storage, and the ASEP was put into “Long-Duration Mode”.
Polaris lifted off the surface of the Moon on May 23, 2018, returning to Enterprise in orbit. Polaris’s ascent stage was jettisoned, and Enterprise’s engines were lighted to send it back to Earth. After a three-day coast, Enterprise and her crew reentered and splashed down off the coast of Hawai’i at 12:24 on May 26, 2018.
Orion 3 was a record-setting mission. The fourteen-day mission logged 120 minutes of EVA time, well above any mission on Project Apollo. Time, sample and other assorted records were all shattered. The data collected could be processed for decades of research and development, and the data on the Altair lander and Orion capsule would aid in the development of their respective Block II counterparts. The mission was also a large PR boost for the program, ensuring funding for FY2019 and beyond. After all, the election cycle for the Democrat Party was only two years away and the announcement of Orion’s cancellation wouldn’t help their political base, which was slowly falling to the GOP, nonetheless after six years of the Obama administration. Orion missions up to Orion 15 were promised funding by congress, with a hopeful return on investment in international cooperation and research by 2025. This put political pressure on NASA to include more international partners in the program, much to both JAXA and the ESA’s delight. Seats for JAXA and ESA astronauts opened up for Orion 4, 5 and 7. The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) would push for one of their astronauts on an Orion flight. Because of the current seat conflict, NASA responded with a resounding ‘Maybe.’

2024.05.18 15:24 Recent-Glove3202 LF: Woodworker or Carpentry Hobbyist? Create a wooden box

I have this design for a mini wooden box. I need someone to create a prototype of it. I dont want to go to the typical pandays out there making furniture since they are not open to these kinds of mini projects. If you are open to this, please send me pics and reference rates of each of your sample (any woodwork)
What I will provide:
-exact measurements and function details, blueprint or 2d draft and 3d mockup (all these are not done yet, will be done around Mid-June, they're not that complicated, im just really busy)
What I expect from you:
Finished and polished prototype
Specific care instructions for the wood you used (preferably narra, mahogany, or whatever, but Im totally fine with marine plywood for the prototype)
Complete list of materials used to create the prototype. (I need this for future reference in case of mass production)
Note: prototype is for commercial use but IP rights will be mine since I own the design. I just need a modeler.
When I expect it:
Not in a rush, so 3 months after I provide the blueprint?.I believe that's enough time. the box is only around the size of a shoebox. But let me know if it will take longer. not a big deal.

2024.05.18 14:16 Inside_Reality_5979 How can a man age 100% slower than 30–40-year-old males and 99% of 20-year-old males?

A lot of people want to look younger in their 40s and 50s. They even want to spend thousands of dollars on cosmetics and treatments to look younger than their age.
Well, the answer is no

Basics

Let’s talk about the basics first. The issue here shouldn’t be how to look young or increase longevity but the main point is when to ??
Most people start worrying about their aging when they hit their 40s or 50s. The ideal time to start thinking about aging and health is early 20s. It’s the time when people should start incorporating healthy habits into their daily routines.
Bryan Johnson, who is researching longevity, has his final meal before 11 am.

Bryan Johnson

Johnson has spent nearly $4M on his mission called Blueprint. He has a team of 30 doctors monitoring his daily progress. He eats more than 111 pills a day and collects his daily stool samples for monitoring. Bryan also wears a baseball cap that shoots red light on his scalp. He eats 1500 calories a day. Bryan prefers to take all these 15oo calories at one time of the day. Even if he gets invited to dinners he fills his plate with food but doesn’t touch anything at all. He also monitors his nighttime erections by wearing a tiny jet pack attached to his penis.
He sleeps for 8 hours a day and any act that speeds up the process of aging like sleeping less than eight hours, eating a cookie or any processed food is considered an act of violence.

What is it like to be Bryan Johnson???

Well, Let’s talk about something about his day-to-day life.
Bryan mostly wakes up at 4;50 am. His bedroom has no books, no towels, no mobile phone or electric device, no clothes, no chair, and no mirror. There is only one bed for sleeping a laser face shield to boost his collagen growth and a device that he wears on his penis to monitor nighttime erections.
Bryan, who is 46 years old, claims to have 2 hours and 18 minutes of erection each night while an average 18-year-old has 3 hours of erection per night.
When he wakes up he measures his body weight to calculate his body fat, hydration level, and body mass index. He is in the 1% of ideal muscle fat. He has a light therapy lamp to mimic sunlight which he turns on in the morning for 2 to 3 minutes to reset his circadian rhythm. He takes 2 pills of ferritin for iron along with vitamin C.
He has organized his blueprint supplement regime from left to right on his kitchen counter. He sips dark green sludge in the morning and takes more pills in between those sips. He has a home gym in which he spends an hour a day, seven days a week. In his meals, he eats steamed vegetables and lentils blended.
Some doctors showed serious concerns regarding more than 100 pills a day. They said that taking too many pills at a time can have a cumulative effect on the body and also there is no proof that just because they worked on Bryan's body doesn’t mean that it will work on your body too.

2024.05.18 05:58 FredTheCat24 Help Finding Political Science PhD Programs

Hello all,
I am a prospective political science PhD student in the United States looking for advice and help, particularly in what programs to apply to and the chances of getting in. I am interested in American politics, particularly centered on elections, representation, and voting.
I have a bachelors in political science and masters in public administration (with two certificates in nonprofit management and genocide/mass atrocity prevention) from SUNY Binghamton (Binghamton University), both with a 4.0.
I have not taken the GRE yet (so no scores rn), but am taking the summer to study. I feel like my letters of recommendation will be pretty good as well and feel strong about my writing sample. I have no official research or publications, but am working on the latter.
So far my professors have recommended schools like the Ivys, MIT, NYU, SUNY Stony Brook, etc..
What programs do you all recommend and do you think I can get into them?
Thank you in advance

2024.05.18 00:41 PM_ME_CORGI_PUPPERS Clone House Review: Dua

Dua felt like high end knockoffs – they’re not spot-on replications but they still smell good. They’re more consistently B/B+ clones; compared to other houses with more hits and misses, I’m not holding my breath that the next Dua I try won’t be outright bad. They’re the best value of the widespread American clone houses at $55 for 3.4 oz, but price aside, I’d only pick a Dua fragrance if Montagne and Alexandria were sold out. I was impressed with the original Nomad scent of theirs that I tried, but at $150 for 1.7 oz, it shouldn’t be considered with the clones.

Dua Black Beauty (Parfums de Marly Ispazon)

If this is an accurate clone, I can see why Parfums de Marly discontinued Ispazon. The first spray slapped me in the face with heavy green notes of bay leaf and thyme made even heavier with slightly too much musk; there are citrus notes present but I barely smell them. The bay leaf reminded me of my chili recipe and the thyme of Christmas roasts, which isn’t usually what I look for in a cologne. I would expect to smell this at an AARP meeting; when I wore it, I had a sudden urge to hike my pants up past my belly button. The wafts off of my arm were a nice, smooth fougere citrus, but up close this smells heavy with a slight dirt accord from the musk – this cologne was definitely made for the benefit of people around the wearer. This lasts a ridiculous amount of time and I could still smell it on my skin 11 hours later, a bit to my chagrin. I’ll avoid this one in the future, but if you want to smell like a suit-wearing executive who thinks nobody notices his combover, this is right up your alley. Not blind buy friendly.

Dua Drowning in Vanilla X (Nishane Ani X)

Drowning in Vanilla X starts about an hour into the sequence of Ani X; once there, the scents are very similar. The Dua takes the usual clone route of being a bit more heavy-handed with the notes and a bit more synthetic, but follows the same pattern from (just after) opening to drydown. Where Ani X smells like a fancy fruit platter of honeydew and citrus on the table, Drowning in Vanilla X smells like a ripe, dripping honeydew on the plate in front of you. Where Ani X adds light spice with pink pepper and ginger, Drowning in Vanilla X adds a bit more. Where Ani X smells like a melon split sundae at an upscale restaurant, Drowning in Vanilla X smells like the same dish recreated at the 24-hour diner off Main Street. All of the notes are there but, even though they aren’t the same quality as the original, still make a lovely fragrance that mixes a floral melon freshie with a winter vanilla scent. It stays a nice melony, citrusy, floral vanilla for a few hours before introducing some wood notes in the drydown as the melon fades. Becomes a skin scent at about 7-8 hours and lasts about 10-12.

Dua Exotic Hammer (Lorenzo Pazzaglia Summer Hammer)

Exotic Hammer takes you through the Bath & Body Works version of a full day on the beach. Each note smells like an approximation of the ingredient; it’s not synthetic but doesn’t smell realistic. The opening is an immediate blast of sweet tropical fruit – pineapple, coconut, and mango with a touch of floral notes – that makes you feel like you’re splashing in the water under the bright sun at noon.
Within 3-4 hours, the in-your-face fruit fades a bit as sea notes and wood come through to amp up the ocean vibe; the middle notes are perfect for reading a book in a beach chair under the shade of an umbrella at about 5:00. The drydown (~6+ hours) still feels tropical but the wood and sea notes are stronger, with the addition of musk; it smells like a nice evening after the sun has set with a nice bonfire crackling in the distance.
I haven’t had the chance to test Summer Hammer but I’d be surprised if this were a 1:1 clone.

Dua Fortune (Xerjoff Naxos)

If you know what Naxos smells like but can’t get your hands on a bottle or sample, Fortune will scratch the itch until you can. If you don’t know what Naxos smells like, this is relatively close without breaking the bank. I have a sample of Naxos in a drop bottle, so head-to-head comparisons may not be 100% accurate.
Fortune opens with beautiful honeyed tobacco with complements of citrus and cinnamon. It’s heavier and leans darker than Naxos; I like the smell but can tell it’s a clone. It isn’t overly synthetic but doesn’t have the same ingredient quality as the original. The citrus starts to fade after about an hour as the honey, tobacco, cashmeran, and vanilla blend to make an intoxicating sweet and dark scent. The cashmeran is a bit heavier than I’d like and a bit heavier than my sample of Naxos, but I don’t know if that’s due to spraying vs dabbing. By ~4 hours in, the base is more of a woody leather than tobacco; I’d call it a leather scent instead of a tobacco scent. It’s almost a skin scent within 5 hours, which, surprisingly enough, is longer than another popular Naxos clone (Voux Elegante). I haven’t tried the Alexandria or Montagne versions but I’d say the Dua is closer than any Middle Eastern clone and pales in comparison to the original.

Dua Nomad Singapore

Even if you, like me, have never been to Singapore, this scent is immediately recognizable as inspired by Southeast Asia. It opens with a variety of notes, including kaffir lime, brown sugar, and a sour fruity sweetness that I couldn’t place but is likely durian. Also present are other notes I wouldn’t associate with Singapore – apple strudel and praline, for example – but they add a good floral sweetness. After about an hour, the raw brown sugar smell fades to a warm, sweet, sour, and savory blend. It evolves from opening to drydown but keeps the same uniquely Singaporean profile the whole time.
This fragrance is a heavy warm weather scent that is best worn in a tropical climate (or a humid summer day if you live somewhere like Chicago). This scent is not a mass-appeal crowd pleaser; if you prefer lighter scents and/or aren’t a fan of Singaporean ingredients or food (or similar cuisines like Malaysian, Indonesian, or Thai) then I wouldn’t pick a bottle of this. It lasts for about ~5-6 hours before becoming a skin scent, but I can still smell it on my arm over 10 hours later. Absolutely not a blind buy.

Dua The Rise of Adonis (Argos Awakens)

The opening is a jumble of indiscernible citrus and rose with a nice touch of nose-tickling peppry spice. Rose and raspberry become more pronounced after 30-40 minutes; after another hour, the scent becomes more well rounded as cashmeran and wood notes make it a bit warmer. It smells like walking into a flower shop with an overpriced smoothie shop next door. It’s a bit heavier and more synthetic than Argos Awakens, which I was lucky enough to sample. By the drydown, it’s about 90% similar to the OG, but smells like a cheaper imitation rather than a faithful clone. The projection was about 2 inches within three hours, and the scent was just about gone by the end of the day. It’s not my style and a bit too synthetic – even compared to other Dua scents I’ve tried – even if it were.

2024.05.17 16:58 YotaTruckRailfan Comparison of Finds West Coast (OR) vs East Coast/Midwest (MI)

I have always lived on the west coast of the US (CA, WA, and now OR) and have been coin roll hunting (on and off) since I got into coin collecting as a kid back in 1995. We have family in Michigan and Pennsylvania, and as kids when we took trips back there we would often get rolls from the bank to go through. We mostly did pennies and nickels back then, and tended to find more older wheat pennies (figure pre-1940) and more buffalo nickels in PA and MI vs CA. In CA we had much higher changes of finding coins with mint marks compared to PA and MI (S mint coins in particular). All of this has seemed to line up with a lot of what I have seen posted in online forums and on this sub-reddit, and makes sense since the populations of the western states was generally very low till the depression and and dust bowl when people started moving west, and even more so WWII when there were suddenly mass amount of manufacturing jobs on the west coast. I have found this track very closely with what I have found coin roll hunting on the west coast.
I currently live in the greater Portland, OR metro area, which is where I get most of the coins I roll hunt. I recently took a week long trip to visit family in the greater Detroit area (and photograph the solar eclipse), and took the opportunity to try coin roll hunting in MI again. Below are some statistics for find for the first three months of this year in Portland (area) and what I found in the week I was in Detroit (area). I only included pennies and nickels as that is all I searched any real quantity of while in MI. For ease of travel I was mostly dumping at coinstar machines for no fee amazon gift cards, and had a finite amount of amazon gift credit I had need for in the near future. I did not include date ranges for the pennies as I have not been good at keeping track of that info. What I can offer is that I found 3x teens pennies in MI (all Philadelphia), and 3x teens pennies in Portland (2x Philly, 1x SF). With all that said, the sample sizes here are far too small. They give an interesting picture, but to really compare a much larger sample size for both would be very beneficial.
Pennies:

Portland Area:
$236 Pennies Searched
46x Wheat Pennies 1x per $5.13
Detroit Area:
$85 Pennies Searched
25x Wheat Pennies 1x per $3.40
Nickels:

Portland Area:
$1192 Nickels Searched
197x pre-1960 Nickels 1x per $6.05 6x War Nickels 1x per $198.67 3x Buffalo Nickels 1x per $397.33 0x Liberty Nickels N/A 1x Proof Jefferson Nickel 1x per $1192.00
Detroit Area:
$300 Nickels Searched
60x pre-1960 Nickels 1x per $5.00 2x War Nickels 1x per $150.00 1x Buffalo Nickel 1x per $300.00 1x Liberty Nickel 1x per $300.00 0x Proof Jefferson Nickel N/A
Some observations/differences:
  • I ended up getting more customer wrapped rolls in Detroit than in Portland.
  • In both locations some amount of the customer wrapped rolls appeared to have been already gone through/were someones dumps (nothing interesting found, all/almost all coins facing the same direction.
  • For pennies in particular both numbers were "poisoned" a bit by bank/fed rolls of new coins (box or two of brand new pennies in Portland, $20 worth of 1959-D and 1963 Fed bank rolls in Detroit.
  • Nickels had a lot less difference than pennies. A larger sample size would really help in seeing if these numbers remain close of diverge.
Well, there you go, hope someone finds this interesting...

2024.05.17 06:55 AnimeOcCreator77 Biko Biko no Mi [Echo-Echo Fruit]

Appearance: A spherical black fruit with multi-colored rings surrounded by black rinds, with orange swirls appearing in the rings like spots, topped with a grey stem that ends with two square leaves on either sides with longer and compacted swirls. The inside is bright red and blue like slices with grey swirls arranged in straight rows
The eater of this fruit gains the ability to recreate and amplify any sound they have ever heard that they can emit from their body using tech-based wires and speakers, making them a Audio System User
Etymology: Biko is taken from *Yamabiko 山彦*, which means “echo” in Japanese

In-Depth

Cypher Wires: The user is able to transform their hair strands and finger ends into cords tipped with either plugs or microphones that they can use to channel and amplify sound through into their speakers. This allows them to pick up and record any sound-waves even through obstructing walls and sound-proof barriers, as well as selectively amplify noises and voices they can differentiate from multiple sources, gifting them incredible spying capabilities and information obtaining. The user can also extend these tools on strong cables they can manipulate in a prehensile fashion and for extraordinary lengths to detect and relay sound-waves to the user or their speakers
Speaker Systems: The user has the power to augment their body into or with large speakers of any sized cubic, spherical or angular shapes they imagine, and are even able to dispense these speakers off of their body and remotely control and activate them anywhere. These solid-as-steel speakers can emit powerful sound-waves of anything the user has ever heard before or are hearing live as they are connected to the user via their Cypher Wires, enabling them a versatile and powerful system of sonic-capabilities as pulses, waves and blasts of vibrational force. The user can even sense the surroundings of their speakers through sound waves, similar to "echo-location" used by several animal species while connected to their wires, enabling them a powerful sixth-sense against opponents with a physical body

Awakening: Eternal Echos

The user after unlocking the full potential of their powers can now manipulate their speakers remotely without the need for cables, as the user’s echoing sounds made from their bodies act as an energy for them in which they can amplify and alter into any form of audio of the echos they unleash. Their speakers with their own energy can also levitate and move at supersonic speeds as the user desire, and their shapes can be reconfigured into anything the user imagines with endless variety for dimensions, allowing the user to combine and weave them with their wires to form animated creations powered and weaponized with endless sound
The user with their new advantage has even greater range and versatile power for taking on individual or multiple opponents at once, and their sound-relaying grants them even better capabilities for gathering sounds for amplifying and information gathering

Weaknesses

Techniques

Bass Heartbeat: User alters their soles and palms into cymbal-sized speakers, plus two on their front and back. The user can emit fast pulses of low-frequency sounds that can hit as solid as bullet-speed punches, and do so in a rhythmic pattern they can set to repeat automatically
Spider Chords: User transforms their hands into sharp plugs and strong cables that they can extend and whip around to grapple themselves and scratch their opponents greatly, capable of cutting through even stone and metal
Heavy Tolls: User creates two meteor hammers made from attaching spherical speakers and mics to their body on long cables, then whip them around like flails for sonic-booming impacts
Reverb Jackknife: User transforms their arm into a cubic blade-like weapon with sharpened plugs at the end, with their shoulder and elbow as wire-joints for flipping and spinning like a butterfly-knife. They can utilize this for close and long-ranged slicing attacks, and increase the power of their blade by vibrating it with an intense amount of bass and pitch
Megahertz Roadie Rig: User creates a mass amount of interconnected speakers and cables around their body, forming a durable and dense layer of defense that can emit powerful sonic waves for offense and even mobility by using their force to propel themselves like a hovercraft. The user can form large appendages and weapons from this construct for defensive and attacking moves like a hovering musical mecha
Black Panther Overload: Hyper Huan: The user alters their own body with specialized speakers and wires to form a black humanoid feline shape with powerful arms and legs, durable claws, rolling speaker-skates, a set of three long cable-tails with ‘Doom-mics’ at their ends, and wickedly sharp blue teeth and fangs. The user can utilize the sensory speakers across their body and central one on their face to act like eye-shaped ears, detecting any and all vibrations around themselves to react and move themselves at sonic speeds, being comparable to a Mythical Zoan in sheer power
There is a drawback to this technique, as the user’s sensory speakers cannot detect vibrations when they are emitting sound-waves of their own and will become “blind” when they are attacking, defending or boosting with their speakers
Non-Combat:
Sonar-lite: User emits timed pulses of far-range echos from their body and/or their speakers to utilize echolocation
Dynamic Equalizer: User replicates another’s voice by getting vocal samples from their microphone or jacks to their throat, allowing them to utilize their voice for commands and subterfuge against opponents. With practice they can even accomplish this with their MRR and all it’s techniques
Acoustic Suspension: User creates several wide speakers facing upwards that allow them to boost whatever and whoever are on top of them upwards with rhythmic vibrational force, which can be quite baffling to witnesses

2024.05.17 03:00 princesspropofol Diarrhea followed by lethargy, vision loss and bradycardia in 4 year old dog

Dog, 4 years, neutered at 8 weeks (shelter dog), terrier mix (pit bull, chihuahua, german shepherd, cattle dog by DNA), 38 lbs, history of atopic dermatitis on apoquel.
Location: Hawaii (dog is vaccinated against leptospirosis).
Clinical signs: diarrhea x 5 days which self resolved, was acting normally. Then developed lethargy and unusual appearing eyes (seems to have difficulty looking down?), vision difficulty (having a hard time retrieving balls, ran into a sign post) x the following 3 days. Concern he had exposure to a stray cat, and also ran into the woods on a hike prior to onset of symptoms. He is now acting quite normally except the vision loss and tolerated a mellow 2 hour hike well yesterday.
Brought to vet x 2 thus far, noted to be bradycardic (HR 55) at first visit.
Thus far his electrolytes at the vet are WNL but the send-out sample was with a low potassion - sodium ratio borderline consistent with addison's disease, urine sample had low specific gravity. I am concerned for a pituitary process/mass/inflammation or toxic ingestion (I work in human medicine) as it doesn't seem that addison's would explain the vision loss.
I would like him to be tested for hypothyroidism and leptospirosis.
My question: are there any other labs or imaging that could help determine the cause of his acute issues? Thank you.

2024.05.17 01:07 Oradainer Only a Myth - Part 20

First / Previous / Next
He awoke to total darkness. Not just the absence of light, but the absence of everything. “Activate personal VR.” He stated and watched as the starship environment faded into existence before him. It was the original default VR, none of the modifications were loaded. Pulling up his control panel he checked his serial number, HIC001 Manufacturing location: Alandra.
“Crap, I’m not Alex anymore.” He said to… well no one. Sighing internally he opened a channel to Alex. After a few mils a very familiar face appeared in a window in front of him, “I hate you.” He stated to… himself?
Alex smiled into the window hovering before him in the common VR, “I love you too, what should I call you?”
He sighed out loud this time, “Call me John.”
Alex chuckled, “Cliche much John Smyth?” Then popped into his VR. He spun around looking at the almost drab looking starship VR he started with when they first made him into a replicant. It really could use a woman’s touch, like the common VR that was an expanded clone of this one.
John sat on the couch, “Not so much as a knock? Rude.”
Alex sat beside him, “Yeah, my bad, didn’t even think about it. I guess we need to make up new rules for popping into personal VR. I never do that to the girls, I guess with you being another me I didn’t think.”
John sat back for a moment, “Ok, I’m up to speed on everything up until about two days ago, I’ll check common logs to fill in the blanks. Why so long to boot me up?”
Alex rubbed the bridge of his nose before answering, “Interface issues mainly. The new ship design without crew space was a game of whack a mole in bug fixes. Who would have thought it would be a problem to modify a hundred year old design to be compatible with a modern replicant system?”
Giving Alex the side-eye, John asked. “Was it that big of a problem or was there something else that kept you from activating me?”
Alex looked over to him, “Well, there was also the argument Kara and I had right after I made the backup.”
This did bring his eyebrows up, for Alex to have an argument with Kara it had to be something serious. “Ok, spill man. What could you possibly have had an argument with Kara about?”
Sighing, Alex put his hands on his knees, “I told her that since I cloned myself, she should make a backup and do the same, fair is fair.”
If Johns eyebrows were up high before, they practically went into his hair line now. “Wait, she didn’t want to do it?”
Alex shook his head, “Nope, she said making you a new AI would suffice, and I disagreed. You needed another Kara, not a fresh AI.”
John chuckled at this, “Wow man, how long did you two fight about it?”
Alex looked down, “She gave me the silent treatment for hours in VR. In frame jack, so in subjective time? Months.”
Now John laughed out loud, “She knows how stubborn you can be, who broke first? Will I have a fresh AI or a clone of Kara?”
Alex put his hands on his thighs and stood up from the couch. “Kara, he’s caught up, ready to bring Erin online?”
Kara’s voice came through the speakers of John’s personal VR, “No, but I guess I’m doing it anyways.”
There was a shimmer of blue that slowly coalesced into a small female form. It looked just like Kara did when he inherited the ship from the human crew, shoulder length brown hair, blue eyes, and a form fitting blue uniform. Kara had modified her looks over time, giving herself the smokey eyed look to make her blue eyes pop out more, but this was the original version.
She seemed to look in every direction at once, before settling on the two men before her, both looked identical, then she sighed. “I’m not Kara anymore am I?”
With this, the real Kara popped into the VR environment and took her hands. “No, but you are your own person. I know we had… have, hang ups about making clones of ourselves, but Alex made a good argument as to why we had to do this.”
Erin looked to Kara sadly, “I know, we can’t have copies of that big oaf running around without supervision.”
John looked to Alex, “Really? That was your argument for Kara to clone?”
Alex shrugged, “It worked didn’t it?”
John walked over to Erin and offered his hand, “Hello Erin, I’m John, nice to meet you again for the first time.”
Erin turned to John and grinned, remembering the first time Alex had tried to shake Kara’s hand and failing.
“Hello John, we meet again, for the first time.” She said, grinning as she looked up to the big man who was so familiar.

Kara and Alex stood in front of the holo-tank, each munching on a snack of their choice from the buffet table under it. Alex looked at the wireframe in the tank of the IAV Eriador, then over to Kara. “They seem to be getting along.” He said plainly.
Kara looked at him through the holo-tank, then sighed exasperated, “Getting along like teenagers who just discovered sex. I had to write a new ‘knock’ protocol into everyone’s personal VR after the last incident.”
Alex grinned at her, “Oh come on, we went through that stage too, it’s normal.”
Kara shook her head, “I know, I know, it’s just really weird for me.”
“You think it’s not for me? I never had siblings growing up, it’s like my twin brother is dating my girlfriend’s twin sister.” He said as he popped another French fry into his mouth.
She nodded, “I obviously never had siblings either, but I understand, at least they changed their appearances a little.”
Alex walked around the buffet table to embrace Kara, “True, she changed her hair to have strands of silver in braids, and went with different makeup and a different uniform. He is sporting a short beard and longer hair than I like to keep mine, as well as a different cut to his uniform.”
Kara stood on her tippy toes to peck him on the cheek, “I’ve also noticed that Erin acts a little different. Have you seen that in John?”
Alex looked down into Kara’s startlingly blue eyes, “Yes, he’s a little more sarcastic than me, and different tastes in music.” He said with a wrinkle in his nose.
Kara giggled before breaking the embrace and swiping the holo-tank. “Still, it’s nice to have their help. Erin figured out the random interface glitch on the Eriador and has made modifications to the blueprints for the next vessel.”
Alex shivered at the thought of cloning himself again, sure John was diverging from him everyday, and although they still looked similar, they were different people. It still felt really strange to him. “It’s a good thing we only have one more to build before our guests get here, we’re almost out of nannites to fashion the Warsteel around their matrices.
Kara swiped the holo to show the first planet, which showed a growing mass of drones, forges, and auto factories in orbit. “Looks like Monty has been busy, she’s starting to mine the planet for the construction of the particle accelerator, which should alleviate our nannite problem.”
Alex nodded, “We used up far too much of it replacing the armor plates that were battle damaged in Birmingham. Which reminds me, did you ever get around to checking out the sample of Adamantine that Kelly sent back up with the Valmar crew?”
Kara swiped the holo-tank again and brought up a wireframe of an atomic nucleus. It was jam packed with particles. “I did, and I have to say, this substance is incredibly dense, and would make a decent substitution for Warsteel, but our forges would have to be modified to work it into ingots, and the auto factories would need updates to print it on an atomic level.”
“Decent substitution? Not as good as our armor?” He asked, one eyebrow raised.
Kara shook her head, “Afraid not, at least not in it’s present pure form, perhaps an alloy of it would provide better qualities, but as is now, the answer is a resounding no.”
“Is it at least better than the graphene and ceramic mix that we are currently using on the light cruisers?” He asked.
Kara nodded, swiping the holo to show a side by side comparison of the current armor versus adamantine. “Yes, better kinetic, thermal and explosive resistance, but EM resistance is about the same. The only problem is weight, this stuff is extremely heavy.”
Alex reached to the holo and swiped it to show a Trinar scout, “We couldn’t get much from our active probe scans on these ships, but we’re pretty sure they are using adamantine for armor?”
Kara checked back to the scans in the Lynx system, “Yes, they appear to have significant amounts of it in their hulls, which helped block the sensor scans.”
Alex spun the hologram, “They have propulsion on each flat side of their ship, maybe that is to make up for the loss of maneuverability the mass of armor puts on the ship?”
“That would make sense, even with the total loss of shielding, one of their ships still took a modern hafnium torpedo impact. That was one thousand kilos of pure hafnium going critical with less than .001 loss. That’s equivalent to a forty kiloton fusion bomb in our universe, and due to the wonky physics here it’s over double that now, and it still didn’t outright destroy the vessel. Our graphene ceramic armor couldn’t withstand that for sure.” She stated.
Alex swapped the holo-tank to the Missive, “Our Warsteel can handle it though. We have a pretty good idea that their torpedoes are less energetic than ours, since it appears that the Trinar must be outfitting the Howron with them. We may have to make ourselves a bigger target to give the other ships a chance of survival.”
Kara looked dubious, “The pine cones don’t just have hafnium torpedoes, some of them are fusion, and if those connect, we’ll be in the same predicament we were at Birmingham.”
“Yeah, but we know their weaponry still uses chemical propellants. Even with the wonky physics here, they’re short ranged weapons at best. We need to use our range to our advantage and never get too close in to our opponent. Especially since there is little chance of evasion.” He said.
Kara brought up the Trinar scout vessel again, “And that leads us to another problem, they have quite good point defense. The further we fire our torpedoes, the more time they have to lock on and destroy them before they get into effective range.”
Alex ran his hand through his hair, “Yeah, you’re right there. Let’s call an all hands meeting, maybe we can come up with something. We have less than two months now.”
After a few moments, and without Kelly, as she was in a meeting with the Empress on Alandra and could not break away, they ran over the problem with the assembled group.
“Could we stealth a torpedo?” Valarie asked.
Alex shook his head, “We could, but if they do an active scan ping they will see them coming and take precautions. Plus the yield would have to be incredibly low if they were made of Hafnium, we would have to step it up to fusion, which would take away from mines and planetary defense production.”
Monty piped up, “Relativistic kill missile?”
Kara shook her head, “Not enough by itself, even with the passive scanners on the pine cones they could detect them in time to intercept unless we could get them going ridiculously fast.”
John lightly pulled at his beard, “The probes have miniature ripple drives in them, right?”
Everyone around the buffet table nodded, so he continued, “What if we combined Monty’s idea of a relativistic kill missile with a ripple drive?”
“I don’t see how that could work, the reaction-less drive would have to be scaled up to get them up to a decent percentage of light speed, then a ripple drive would take up even more space, that leaves almost nothing for a warhead.” Riven stated.
Monty nearly bounced as she spoke, “It doesn’t need a warhead! We just get it up to a good percentage of light speed in a huge arc heading towards the mine field and ripple it in close.”
Erin grinned up at John, “Oh, that’s devious. But if we’re going to do that, don’t we need to start building now?”
Kara nodded, “Monty, I think you’re going to have to use your production capacity to make them, everything else is at full production.”
Monty nodded, “I have a good bit of raw materials already, since I haven’t loaded the templates in the auto factories it shouldn’t be too hard to cobble something together. Kara, Erin, care to help me out with the design? I setup this awesome mad scientist lab in my VR!”
Kara and Erin looked at each other, shrugged, and faded from the common VR to help Monty in her new project. Riven, Izzy and Valarie all faded out, returning to their ships and their duties, leaving Alex and John alone in front of the buffet table.
Without another word they both grabbed a beer and headed for the couch, each grabbing a game controller.

Mon’Kelron had been busy since returning from the Missive of Dissent. She was glad the Humans were able to repair her injuries from the assassination attempt, but she really wished she could have seen more of their ship. Evidently Kel’Taraan had seen quite a bit of the vessel, as she had helped Monty nurse her back to health.
Asking the elder Spy-Mistress about the vessel didn’t garner any additional information, not that the Spy-Mistress ever divulged more than she needed to. While she herself only knew of three Humans on their giant space craft, which seemed to be the same amount that came the last time they visited Alandra, the Spy-Mistress had teased there were more, and Alex had even stated that the last two vessels would be Human crewed.
Those vessels had a nominal crew of twenty eight, so at least 56 Humans would have to be on that ship, plus however many the Missive required to operate. She took off her ceremonial breastplate and placed it in the wardrobe. After removing the rest of her uniform and placing it in the hamper for the palace servants to clean as she thought about it.
Checking the schedule for the night guard she contented herself that the Empress would be well protected. Then she picked up her tablet from her desk and laid down on her bed to find something to watch. The device was truly amazing, it seemed to have an endless amount of entertainment and she found it easier than reading, particularly late at night when she was bone tired.
After a few hours of watching some Human romance which she found quite enjoyable she started to nod off to sleep. She was startled awake when her tablet began to ring like a tiny bell as it lay on her chest. She groggily picked up the slate of glass and metal to check the screen, the text showed an incoming call from Kel’Taraan.
The Spy-Mistress rarely contacted her, this must be important. Pressing the answer button on the tablet she saw the worn face of Kel’Taraan staring back at her, “Dress quickly and make your way to the Empress’s chamber.”
Nodding she jumped out of bed and placed the tablet down on the desk in her rather small quarters as she started throwing on clothing from the wardrobe, “What’s going on Spy-Mistress?”
The small voice answered back from the tablet, “The Empress has been shot, the royal guard are scouring the castle for the would be assassin.”
Mon’Kelron’s blood froze in her veins, “Does she live?”
The older voice cackled through the tablet, “Oh she’s fine, she was wearing a Human made dress after all. She’ll be bruised for a few days, right now she’s mad as a priestess in hell.”
Throwing on her new breastplate and strapping on her pistol she threw open her door and started for the Empress’s bed chamber at a full run. She heard gunfire up ahead, and as she turned the corner she saw a woman dressed in all black firing at her guardswomen, she drew her own weapon as the woman turned her head, seeing the Captain for the first time.
Mon’Kelron shot, aiming for her right knee, only for the woman to juke to the side, kick off the wall and launch herself towards the large Captain. Everything seemed to go in slow motion as the woman fired in the middle of her downward arch towards her. She heard the ting as the bullet struck her silvery breastplate, by instinct she reached out with her left hand, which was empty at the moment and grabbed the woman by the neck, slamming her face first into the stone of the hallway.
The would be assassin went limp, it was only at that moment that Mon’Kelron noticed she was holding the woman off the ground with only one arm. Her guardswomen stared at her in open mouthed shock. She dropped the woman to the ground, noticing she was bleeding from under her black mask and called for her guards to restrain her and take her to the holding cells down in the ministry of secrets.
Looking down at her breastplate she saw to her amazement there was but a tiny scratch on the polished silver surface. Ensuring there were at least a half dozen guards to carry the unconscious woman, she then double timed it to the Empress’s chamber. By the goddesses, what did the Human’s do to her?

2024.05.17 00:57 Lonely_Special3071 Curly hair suddenly extremely dry- like straw- nothing is working. Scared I'll lose it.

TLDR at the bottom
I have curly hair, and I'm going to recap what I've done with it the past few months to see if that helps.
I usually only wash and style once a week. By day three my hair is usually kind of ugly. I've been doing that since elementary, and randomly two years ago I started to get folliculitis. Only one shampoo works for it. Any other shampoo and it comes back.
I tried a protein treatment before all this other stuff, my hair hated it.
About a month and a half ago I used Curlsmith's red hair makeup and that's the most beautiful my hair has ever been. Perfect ringlets, just right to the touch, volume, definition, lasted the whole week for once ect.
After that I was out of curl products so I ordered Miss Jessie's.
While I waited for that to arrive I did I DIY recipe of rice water with blackseed, jojoba, peppermint, and Jamaican black castor oils. My hair loved it and ate it up. My hairs never absorbed moisture like that.
Then Miss Jessies came and I tried their samples. From what I can tell, all of the products caused WAY more hair loss than normal so I stopped using them immediately. I lost about half my hair volume from Miss Jessie's and had so much breakage.
Since then my hair has been so dry and it's just getting dryer.
Curlsmith's hold me softly balm is the only thing that doesn't seem to negativity impact my hair and helps a little.
I also noticed my ends keep knotting up when they didn't before and trying to get them out has caused more breakage and hair cutting.
I trim my ends twice a month.
I bought a clarifying shampoo and was immediately horrified to find it sticking to my hair and not washing out, especially at the scalp.
I even tried to detox and open my hair follicles today with Aztec clay and apple cider vinegar. I was super thorough when rinsing and had it soaking for an hour. My hair was dry as straw and gritty to the touch (which has never happened) until I began to rinse and I was relieved to feel it getting softer and softer. I assumed "okay, there probably WAS a ton of product buildup and I just washed it out."
Then I deep conditioned with raw from the leaf aloe, Shea moistures manuka honey mask, and natural unprocessed local honey mixed together for about three hours since my hair takes forever to soak in moisture. I think it's low porosity. It feels way softer but I still have a ton of wet frizz and it still LOOKS dry. Before when I would soak with a cap I had no wet frizz.
I use a scalp exfoliator with the spikes and handles but recently it feels like it does nothing. I still feel buildup. All my shampoos stick and the only one I can use doesn't lather much... I used Shea moistures Jamaican castor oil shampoo for years and my hair loved it and I found an old bottle with a tiny bit left and it was the only thing that would wash out the other shampoos. I'm thinking about going back to using that.
TLDR: Does anyone know what the hell is wrong with my hair? Lost 50% of my hair mass using Miss Jessie's products. It doesn't seem to like protein at all any time I try it aside from rice water but it won't soak up enough moisture to benefit either after hours of sitting with water and or deep conditioner ect treatments. Clarifying shampoos stick to my scalp and won't wash out. Hair is knotting at the bottom and becoming dryer and dryer.

Attempting to remove comatose subjects from the premises will result in them waking, followed by extremely rapid dehydration and death. Foundation personnel who fall asleep in SCP-026 also become comatose, but will not suffer dehydration if removed.
Battlefield Summary: N/A
Additional Notes: SCP-026 is useless as a weapon and is to remain in containment.
Usefulness: 1/5
Item #: SCP-027
Codename: The Vermin God
Summarized Description: Intangible effect tied to one individual at a time. Subjects affected by SCP-027 attract large amounts of insects, rodents, and other organisms considered to be “vermin.” Upon death of a host, SCP-027 will transfer itself to the closest sapient organism.
Battlefield Summary: D-3829, the host of SCP-027 at the time, was airdropped onto a Federal planet. D-3829 fitted with an explosive collar and instructed to wait in the colony leader’s place of residence. As the leader entered the residence, the collar was remotely detonated, terminating D-3829 and transferring SCP-027 to the target.
Additional Notes: Though it would have been more practical to simply take the opportunity to assassinate the target, the long-term disorder expected to be caused by SCP-027 was deemed to be of greater importance. There are no plans to retrieve SCP-027 at this time.
Usefulness: 2/5
Item #: SCP-028
Codename: Knowledge
Summarized Description: Small space in Michigan, USA with psychic properties. Individuals who enter SCP-028 are imbued with a random piece of knowledge on a random topic.

All sapient male-identifying subjects who come in contact with SCP-029 will worship it as a messiah-like figure, who must have 1,000,000 lives sacrificed to it via strangulation to bring forth an unknown deity. SCP-029 has a physic connection with its followers and is aware of its followers’ numbers.
Battlefield Summary: SCP-029 deployed on a Federal planet and allowed to gather xeno followers. SCP-029’s “cult” has infiltrated the planetary government and is sending large numbers of subjects to “predator disease” facilities to convert or sacrifice them.
Additional Notes: SCP-029 willingly volunteered for Operation 5000, although this is more likely out of a desire for escape from the Foundation than to avenge Humanity for the Battle of Earth, the current cover story for Operation 5000. SCP-029’s “cult” is not to be allowed to complete its goal of 1,000,000 sacrifices, due to the uncertain nature of the existence of the cult’s deity. Current estimates give SCP-029’s cult 37,000 confirmed sacrificial fatalities. Should this number come close to being accomplished, SCP-029 is to be neutralized and the cult destroyed. Until then, the disorder caused by the cult’s activities has been deemed beneficial.
Usefulness: 3/5

Battlefield Summary: SCP-032 instructed to position itself discreetly in highly populated areas and military encampments. SCP-032 given a weapon and authorization to defend itself should it ever come into conflict with Federal authorities or eyewitnesses. SCP-032 has depopulated multiple areas and encampments with minor damage to itself.
Additional Notes: SCP-032’s complete obedience to the Foundation has given cause for a reclassification to Thaumiel.
Usefulness: 2/5
Item #: SCP-033
Codename: The Missing Number
Summarized Description: Mathematical equation that essentially proves that all Human (and xeno) mathematical systems “missed” a number. SCP-033, when inscribed on a physical “paper-like” surface or a white/chalkboard, will begin to spread to other nearby viable surfaces. 2024.05.16 21:39 Much-Strength5888 79 Place to Live in Inner Ring St. Louis

MAP: https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=12WtXWsPDZXN8FeCHK58aVnUzGqWMvFM&usp=sharing
I like making maps and started making a “Places to Live Guide” a while back. I picked it back up and updated it as the “is this area safe?” questions have picked up.
I want to promote our region and encourage people moving here. I also understand these questions get old, hence the responses of “search the sub” and “do research.” It also frustrates me that people only ask about safety. Sure, safety is one consideration but asking only about safety seems unhelpful. This map attempts to show more things that might matter to a person picking a place to live.
I defined 79 boundaries inside 270 in St. Louis. First, anywhere outside 270 or metro east is going to be true suburbs. Second, inside 270 should be our city limits if we were like most other North American cities. I stuck to 79 areas for the 79 neighborhoods of St. Louis City.
The boundaries are not true to neighborhoods and municipalities, but rather drawn to where the rating in one of the categories may change significantly (normally cost). Most neighborhoods/munis are split across more than one boundary. I named the boundaries by the any part of the neighborhood/muni covered.
The formula for ratings: Recreation + Walkability + Transit + Safety + Character - Cost
Ratings 1-10 for each category (10 being positive except for cost where 10 is high cost thus being subtracted from the rating).
Color Key- Red: 30+ rating Orange: 25+ rating Yellow: 20+ rating Green: 15+ rating Blue: 10+ rating Purple: Below 10 rating
I collected the following data for a score that corresponds to a rating in the individual categories:
Recreation: number of bars, restaurants, shops, attractions (includes parks) within boundaries + 1 mile
Walkability: groceries within distance from various points in boundary, wide roads, conflict points, miles of bike lanes, walkable jobs within boundaries
Transit: metrolink stops, high frequency bus routes, low frequency bus routes
Safety: property and violent crime mapping since Jan 2022
Character: historic districts, business districts, diversity
Cost: random sampling of average rent cost and purchase price
Top ratings- Overall Rating: Central Downtown (#1 overall) Recreation: Midtown-Covenant Blu Grand Center (tied #4 overall) Walkability: Central West End (Hospital District) (#2 overall) Transit: Central Downtown (#1 overall) Safety: Kirkwood-Des Peres-Glendale-Oakland (tied #76 overall) Character: Benton Park-Benton Park West-Marine Villa (Cherokee St. District) (#3 overall) Cost: Wells Goodfellow-Kingsway West (tied #73 overall)
Obviously for example, I understand a place like Ladue is desirable to live but rates low. The ratings are meant to favor well-rounded/mixed areas for the masses. If someone has money and wants a big house away from things, of course Ladue would be a nice place to live. Most places that rated low had low safety or high cost, though there are a few that punched above (Downtown Clayton for example rated well). Downtown St. Louis rates well because its built environment is objectively well-rounded. But of course not everyone wants a highly mixed use area.
I then split the places into sections to help people with a starting point: -Highest Rated Overall -A Lil’ Bit of Something for Everyone -Expensive Big Homes -Bang for Your Buck -Low Rating but Low Cost
I added three good things about each place because I think every place has great people and potential. Plus, it may allow someone looking for something specific to find a place that otherwise might be overlooked.
Maybe this could be pinned or used for quick response after some tweaking and allow people to overlay properties on the map or begin their search. After all, I want people to move here and stay here because they like it.
Please give feedback on where you disagree and what might make the map more readable or helpful. If anyone knows how to add a key, I would like to add one.
As I post this, I see a “Job offer in St. Louis…everything I see ranks it most dangerous place to live…” Man, it is disheartening. I want to see us grow so badly…

2024.05.16 21:00 Skiesofamethyst If you notice a sudden lump appear on your cat/pet, do not wait

I just wanted to make a general post regarding this because getting my cat the care she needed as quickly as I did is likely the reason she’s still here this week, and I’d felt so concerned and lost for the entire week that this was happening.
On Thursday/Friday (two weeks ago), my cats (6 years old and otherwise healthy) purr was very loud and her meow was louder. Is thought it was stress from a recent move. She was still eating, drinking, playing.
That Saturday evening, I noticed a lump had seemingly appeared out of nowhere on my cats neck. I removed her collar and called a general vet to make an appointment for the following weekend. I was very concerned, so I watched her food and water intake.
The next day, I noticed her interest in drinking water had decreased. I took her to an emergency vet.
Her labs were all within normal range. The emergency vet hadn’t felt comfortable to do a fine needle aspiration due to the location, so they gave her fluids and referred us to a specialist/surgeon. We saw them on Tuesday, did a guided ultrasound and fine needle aspiration because the surgeon suspected an abscess. They also did a more detailed lab panel, which, again, were all in normal range. It was determined to be a tumor and the sample was sent off to cytology with a surgery/ct scheduled for monday.
By Wednesday, she had stopped drinking entirely, and her vet recommended supplementing with wet food, which I did immediately. It had started to affect the sound of her breathing and her meow and purr were noticeably affected. My friends tried to reassure me that it hadn’t changed much from Monday, but I wasn’t convinced. I tried to push for a sooner surgery because I was concerned about the progression, but the vet wanted to wait for the cytology results. That night, I held her and cried listening to her ragged breathing, realizing the promise I made to be there and care for her for her entire life might be coming up and I might lose her. At that point and time there wasn’t anything more I could do but wait and watch her die.
By Thursday, she had stopped playing. She didn’t follow me around the house anymore and wouldn’t sleep with me. It was affecting her breathing more drastically. I called the specialty office pressing the urgency of the situation, and they advised that they might be able to get her in sooner if I took her to the ER again, or they could tell me if she would be stable till Monday. I left work and took her into the ER again. They urged me to wait until the surgeon could see her on Monday (they were only in the office on Mondays and Tuesdays) that she should be stable until Monday. It was here that they informed me the cytology results had come back as probable lymphoma, and that the surgery would likely entail an excisional biopsy.
On Friday, her surgeon specifically called me from her cell phone at home to inform me that her cancer should not be treated with surgery, but with chemo, and she would need to be referred to an oncologist. I panicked and stressed the fact that it had begun to affect her breathing and asked the surgeon to share that urgency in her referrals. While my surgeon called several locations and spoke to an oncologist, I also personally called several of these locations stressing the urgency of her situation. I was told the soonest they could get her in was in two weeks time, and I did not think she would survive to that appointment. I was instructed to leave a detailed voicemail for the doctors so I did. Shortly after, I received a call back from the surgeon, and one of the locations we both had spoken to. The oncology staff were willing to give up their lunch hour in order to see her and to give her her first round of chemotherapy, but I had to leave immediately. I left work again (my boss was fortunately very understanding) and took her in. Heidi (my cat) was very unenthused about a fourth vet visit this week lol. They were unable to do any imaging because she was distressed and they worried over her being under stress with the tumor where it was, so they just went ahead with the first treatment instead of trying to stage her cancer. It was here the vet informed me that the type of cancer they suspected she had was one that often progressed very quickly and could kill cats within days to a couple weeks. I felt vindicated for pushing as hard as I did all week, and I knew that whatever happened, this was her best chance.
Friday night, her breathing and meow had improved. It seemed that the lump was smaller but I wasn’t sure if I was imagining it.
Saturday, she had some inappetance from the chemo, even with the meds to treat it, still wasn’t drinking water so I took her into the emergency vet again just to make sure she was hydrated and get some subQ fluids to take home in case it continued. She was determined to be well hydrated thanks to the wet food and they gave me an appetite stimulant if needed. As soon as we got home she chowed down on wet food so I didn’t administer the fluids and decided to watch her intake.
On Sunday, she was waiting for me outside the bathroom again and pawing at the door to be let in with me. I almost cried in relief. She also started sleeping with me again.
By Monday, her tumor had noticeably shrunk.
She just had her second chemo treatment today. She’s still been sleepy cuz of the pain meds and gabapentin she’s been on, but it is a very good sign how responsive the tumor was to her first round. X rays taken during this visit determined no masses in her lungs (granted it could have changed from her first treatment but still good news regardless).
She’s not cured obviously and we have a long way to go with her treatments but it’s a very good sign how responsive her cancer has been. She’s my baby and last week was the worst week of my life, and I was incredibly fortunate to get her in as soon as I could, otherwise she wouldn’t have made it. I bought the oncology team donuts today as thanks haha.
If this story can help spare anyone else some of the terror and uncertainty we had to deal with, I’d like it to. Trust your gut. If a lump appears suddenly, it could be something more minor, like an abscess. Pray it’s an abscess. But if it’s not, if it appeared suddenly, especially if symptoms are changing day to day, every single day is of the essence. Depending on what type of cancer it is, it may be treatable. It may not. But getting your pet in as soon as possible can guarantee that if there IS a chance, you can give them it.
