2024.05.19 15:21 Adept-Fig-7642 [CONTROVERSIAL + PERSONAL OPINION + IDEA OF A NEW GAME] Nadeo needs to release a new game with actual marketing and promotion instead of updating TM2020

This is about how I wanted TrackMania to become more popular and mainstream

I'm not speaking for everyone here, but I wanted Nadeo to focus on launching a new game with a strong marketing strategy rather than focusing to continuing updating TrackMania 2020.
I'm not hating on TM2020, in fact I'm happy that TM2020 still has a dedicated fan base and continues to receive updates and support from its developers. But did you know TM2020 used to lack popularity when it was first announced?
Why TM2020 is not popular in the first place?
When TM2020 first announced, only most TM community knew about it, barely anyone outside heard of this game (The views in the trailer of TM2020 speaks for itself), this means the game barely had any marketing or promotion at all. Not to mention it adds controversies among players in the TM community. Though ofc there are some excitements, but we will discuss what had happened to TM2020 when its first announced:
The Subscription model controversy
The biggest talking point surrounding the release was NADEO decision to adopt a subscription-based model, which required players to pay a 10$/year to access new content and features. I Myself have no problem with the subscription due to how ridiculously low the prices are, but the thing is that if people found out that the game use Subscription-based model, they will blindly hate the game and won't looking to deep further which means even if how low the prices are they are not going to care about it because at its core it's still a Subscription game.
TM2020 got popular thanks to YouTube and Twitch, I see no problem here
Of course, they helped the game to increase awareness and generate excitement around TM2020 the most. Most new players know about this game thanks to Youtubers like Wirtual, Scrapie, Spammiej,... But did you notice that TM2020 only gets most amount of attention from old TM YTbers and not those popular YTbers like PewDiePie, Jacksepticeye, VanossGaming,... Then what if I say that people who watch those TM YTbers often stayed for their content and not play the game for themselves (Yes they said they don't like racing games and stayed for the content but still majority of them didn't bother playing TM2020 which is of course the Subscription model). That said it did give TMNF more attention and alot of people who were introduced to TM usually play TMNF first.
What was your idea for a new TM game?

TrackMania 2 (2026)

That's all for now, if you have any more ideas that could be put into TrackMania 2 I'm happy to hear it. That said if you have criticism or concerns, please provide it in detail.

2024.05.19 14:50 Dougle_07 Beater Sneak Recommendations?

I picked up a pair of the 990v6s a little while back and love them. Unfortunately after a rainy day of crawling on the ground changing the rotors and pads on my car, they got decently messed up. I got a cleaning kit recommendation from here and was able to restore them somewhat, but I’m now looking for recommendations for some potential beaters to wear.
Some considerations (and why I’m asking for some insight here): - I have a wide foot. The 990v6s are 2E - I bought a pair of 440v2s in a 2E, but they were too narrow at the arch for me - trying to avoid too much suede (or buy in a color that hides dirt better) since that’s what I messed up the most on the v6s - would like them to still look decent so I can add them to the daily rotation with the v6s, just hoping for something more forgiving to clean.
Any recommendations help! I’ve been browsing the site quite a bit but determining fit (not all wide shoes are created equal) has been tough.
Thanks!
Edit: Adding that active/running shoes aren’t off the table. I’ve been more active recently and wear a pair of Hokas, but with the miles I’m doing I know I’ll burn through those faster than I expect.

2024.05.19 14:33 TheOnlyBrochacho Help getting right gear for boat.

Hi guys.
I'm a Canadian transplant living on Anna Maria Island, FL. I grew up lake fishing for Pickerel, trout, pike, but i have very limited salt water fishing experience.
I just purchased a boat, and am looking to equip it with 4 rods.I was thinking 2 for inshore/nearshore and 2 for offshore. I want stuff that will last, so budget isn't really a concern.
So far I've looked at Penn Slammer 5500 on 7ft Carnage 3 medium/medium light. Are 5500s too big for in shore?
But overall I'm just looking for any general recommendations on rod/reels/line/leaders/hooks.
Thank you

2024.05.19 14:29 JarekBloodDragon Next world finals in salt lake city has to be the worst choice

You're hosting the world finals in an out door stadium, in a desert, in the summer, ON JULY 4TH.
You're running an event in an out door stadium in summer where it will probably be hot as hell, in a mid sized city at best with nothing to do. Yes they ran world finals in vegas for almost 2 decades but that always happened in march before the heat of the summer really kicked in.
For context here's some other west coast cities that probably would be better picks ordered by population.
Salt lake city metro population - 1,257,936
Portland, OR metro population - 2.5 million (This one is less logical as the only stadium big enough is their MLS stadium that seats 25k. Only 5k more than their NBA arena but with a much bigger floor space. Regardless, it's right downtown with lots to do and geographically a much better location for that time of year. Still a better option than salt lake city)
Denver, CO metro population - 2.8 million (Another mountain time city, mile high is in denver proper. Denver's airport is a huge transit hub for the west coast making for cheaper flights. In general a much better option)
Seattle metro population - 4 million (The seahawks AND mariners stadiums are right next to each other right downtown seattle. Both are on a public transit hub featuring light rail servicing the entire downtown corridor, enough said. Significantly better than salt lake city)
San Francisco metro - 4.6 million (Football stadium in santa clara and if that's not inner city enough then there's oracle park right in san francisco itself)
LA metro - 12.5 million (Just hosted a world finals event)
Like, SALT LAKE CITY of all places. Just, mind mindbogglingly dumb place to host the world finals. It doesn't even have the right infrastructure for this kind of thing. Also on a holiday in the summer in the desert, just why?

2024.05.19 14:23 Din_Red Help with Swiss itinerany

Hey y’all, Need your help in setting up my Swiss itinerary.
Me, my wife and our two elementary grade kids land in Zurich on a Friday afternoon. We have our return flight from Zurich very early Monday morning. (3 nights in Switzerland, I know it’s not a lot but trying to make the best of it)
Places we’d like to visit include Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen for sight seeing. Do the boat cruise on lake brienz. Visit a small town called Saanen. Go to Jungfrau perhaps (not a must do for us though).
Our flight back on Monday is very early, so I surely want to get back to Zurich on Sunday morning evening and check in to a hotel there for tht night.
Help I ask is: - where do you all think I should get my hotel for the first two nights. (Budget around 300 per night). - would in my case, getting a rental car make more sense than going in trains? (I’ll have a couple of large check in bags and couple carry ons). So was wondering if a car helps cos I can leave the bags in wherever we are.
TIA for any ideas!!

2024.05.19 14:20 feliciamat Has this happened to anyone else? Trigger: sudden onset of driving anxiety, bridges

Hi everyone, I will be seeking professional help for this but am just curious about whether this has happened to anyone else.
I have never had driving anxiety except for the anxiety of first starting to drive 10+ years ago, of course. I live in a city. I commuted to work an hour plus away for close to 7 years. I don’t have to commute as far anymore, but all of a sudden, I am TERRIFIED of this bridge I need to cross to get to the next city for no reason.
I literally used to drive over it every single day, twice, to get to work. If you’re curious about the size of the bridge and feel like googling it, it’s called the James N. Allan Skyway and it goes over Lake Ontario. High winds, major fog, and transport trucks blowing over are not an entirely uncommon occurrences. But I’m not afraid of falling off the bridge - I cannot figure out what I am afraid of or why this came on all of a sudden.
I had my tire completely slash and explode on this bridge once in a snowstorm at night when alone about 10 years ago. I was alone and coming down the bridge and remember struggling to keep my car controlled. There is nowhere to pull over if something happens, and the speed limit is regular highway speed which makes it dangerous to just stop, which bothers me, but I just did my best, let off the gas, and dealt with the extremely loud thumping and not smooth drive until I got to the bottom. My tire recently went flat on the highway this year in April and I’m wondering if it’s less a fear of the bridge and more a fear of something happening to my car and not being able to pull over, which is triggered by the bridge because something happened ON the bridge. I get the same sort of anxiety when driving very narrow highways with no shoulder now.
Just curious if anyone else has had any sort of sudden onset fear come totally out of the blue like this that has been difficult to connect?
I used to just keep exposing myself to it but recently I had a panic attack on it and no longer feel safe driving it, as I don’t want to hurt anyone else.

Training

This was a spring full of sharp turns and hard knocks. The original training went towards the Cheap Marathon in Derry, NH. (That race was reported upon by flocculus here.) Training then consisted of maintaining 30-40 weekly miles, with a weekly long run adding two miles from the prior week, with some fluctuation. My hometown is quite hilly, so I foregone specific hill training as all of my runs were not near flat. My final long run was 21.5 miles March 6 before tapering down my weekly long runs.
A freak snowstorm delayed the Cheap Marathon from 4/6 to 4/20, however on 4/9 I fell in my gym shower. Either a rib contusion or hairline fracture paused any running or training for nearly two weeks. Scrambling for some sort of race to scratch the itch and not toss away months of prior training, I found 3 Days at the Fair online – a six day affair featuring ultramarathon categories from 50K to 144H races. They offered a marathon category, with an alluring 50K at similar start times. Naturally, I signed up for shy of 5 more miles than a marathon. One of my running mates gave me the best advice that "ultra running is more of an eating contest than anything else." Considering that during prior marathons I had salt tabs and 3 or 4 GU packets, I thought more about this statement. Hoping my ribs and legs would stand up, I went for the race.
Note: If registering for this race, you can choose the specific date and time you wish to start it. Just stick to that time. I would end up toeing the line with three other 50K runners who opted for the Saturday 9AM start. One could have theoretically started their run any day between Monday and Saturday, at 9AM or 6PM.

Pre-race

The Sussex County NJ fairgrounds were easy enough for me to get to. Those who were not running longer ultra races had plenty of parking mere steps from the registration/food/starting line. (Those running longer races have opportunities to park campers, tents, and so forth.) Weather was gray and cool, at 58˚F/14˚C -ish. I ended up playing with how I'd pack for the run, before noticing racks set up after the start line into which you could place your water bottle so as to not hold it the entire time.

Race

For check-in, I picked up my swag (a plush bathrobe) and timing ankle chip. No bibs here! At 8:50, marathoners and 50K'ers were brought to the respective start lines, 0.1 and 0.2 miles after the timing mat. At 9AM, we would run against the sea of all other runners back to the starting mat, turn around, and continue in the anti-clockwise 1 mile loop course. This is why marathons are 27 laps and 50K is 32 laps – that quarter lap registered as "lap 1 completed," so 31.1 miles registers as 32 at the end. I'm getting ahead of myself!
I found the course compelling enough to follow. After the timing mat, there is a short uphill that weaves past the toilet and shower area, and toward a hairpin. While the 'pin itself was set wide, most of the time I would walk it because of traffic or weakening knees. This continued straight past a Camper's Row of sorts with mild downhill. The second half runs a long arch around the grounds, with a gradual gentle uphill. The course is paved except for a 200m segment of packed gravel – if it had rained, this part could've been muddy. The course completed after a shot down a causeway, and left turning back to the mat. It's this area where registration, fuel/food/catering, and timing is displayed. Overall, no real potholes to be concerned about, just 31 total laps of this!
Hydration and food – tons of everything including Impossible Burgers, PB&J, cola, and sports vitamins – was supplied after the timing mat. I kept track of which lap I was on with a big-screen projection. My name, lap number, prior lap time, and total time appeared. Every 30 minutes or so I decided to take in calories. This included GU Rocktane, GU Vanilla (sooooo good), two stroopwaffels, two ice pops, and a few salt tabs. It was roughly 400 or so more calories than I would have consumed during a race. Hydration was also a factor, that the course was completely uncovered made me feel hotter and "drier" than normal. I might have taken on about 50 fl oz / 1.5 liters of water. My stomach tolerated this!
The main causeway/timing mat area is where I stopped for water and stowed my foods so I didn't have to carry it around. Early on, I didn't understand where the timing screen was, so took minor detours in the registration area. These factors are why my paces seem inconsistent by 30-odd seconds per mile at points.
The people here are amazing! Other runners were highly supportive, chatty, upbeat. One person was dressed up like a chicken (the race logo featured one), and another person blasted some pretty appropriate and popular tunes. It would be a game for me to guess the artist or song on every lap – we had a great banter going! Another group had a dry-erase board and changed it every few minutes or so with a new dad joke. Naturally, I had to stop to retort with another. For example, they wrote, "3.14% of sailors are pi-rates!" I replied, "if it's $4.50 in Jamaica for a beef patty, $3.50 in DR, and $2 in Trinidad, are those the pie rates of the Caribbean?" Sorry, not sorry.
The lack of proper training began to present itself around mile 22. Pacing was targeted at 8:00-8:15 per mile, with goal half-marathon splits at 1h45m or so. After mile 26, I was 3h40m44s, ten minutes off goal pace. Around that point I slowed, taking more walk breaks but promising myself to run at least half every lap. Landmarks were mentally set to designate where walking and running would occur. When I crossed the line I was done.

Post-race

From a mental standpoint, the concept of so many laps did not bother me. My daily runs more often than not are laps in my parking lot, and I've completed a few half marathons on traditional 400m tracks a few times prior – especially during the Global Pandemilovato of '20. Physically, my legs did not feel any worse than they would have after 26.2 miles. My stomach was actually doing quite alright – nausea and headache would set in within a few minutes of finishing other marathons, but not today. My buddy's advice is making me rethink my marathon strategy.
As the event is ultra-marathon focused, finishers of marathon and 50K received a coin. The longer the distance, the larger the coin, with special awards for those who have invested 100+ miles with the organization. (A paver brick [!] stamped with the runner's name is awarded after 1,500 miles with the organization.) Either way, I circled back to the registration area to press my luck at burger availability. Unfortunately they were out, yet making more. While at the beginning of the race the smell of bacon and pancakes wafted onto the line, the sweet smell of success – naturally, manifest as deliciously greasy burgers – greeted us at the end.
Post-race nutriton in my car included Gatorlyte electrolytes, SiS Rego Rapid recovery, and 1.5 liters of water. I opted against the on-site showers and made the long ride home for one which was far more satisfying.
EDIT: Added info about registration. EDIT 2: Grammar.
