2024.05.29 02:51 Zeddblidd The Boys: The Sherman Brothers’ Story (2009)

2024-208 / Zedd MAP: 86.14 / MLZ MAP: 83.34 / Score Gap: 2.80
Wikipedia / IMDb / Official Trailer / Our Collection
I have a few rules when writing - things learned from my time as a journalist, and later, as the crafter of creative career creations, yes friends - I was a professional resume writer, a wordsmith, netting a couple hundred bucks for a single document. You might think “oh, my computer has a template” or “my Aunt Mary does the family’s resumes” but later you’d wonder why nobody was calling you in for an interview.
Crap in / Crap Out, I’m afraid (Rule 1) - creative writing is a skill, not well suited for hobbyists. I turned my gift for turning a phrase, the gift for gab if you will, into money. Anyone who’s ever wished to transform writing into currency can tell you… it’s nearly impossible. Once achieved, there’s no going back. (Rule 2) Look at me - I’m giving it away now, here on Reddit - but then currency can be more than just money. You can spend and pay a great many things - time, attention, respect, a good time, allegiance. :]
The most important philosophy I learned was to make whatever I was writing seem both interesting and fun - never let the customer see the process, never let them see you sweat. (Rule 3)
This is where The Sherman Brothers excelled - they wrote some of the 20th century’s most memorable songs. Happy songs, sad songs, and above all, silly songs for the movies. Outwardly, what a treasure to have two brothers of such skill - music and lyrics, apparently effortlessly and fit for the King of Disney Studios, Walt himself was an employer but also a huge fan.
In private, they couldn’t stand to be near one another. There’s no hate like family hate (that’s Rule 1 but in a different book entirely, one unfortunately on my shelf too). Once they retired, they didn’t speak for decades. We had no idea.
From IMDb: Their music is unforgettable. Their name is legend. Delve into the lives and cinematic legacy of the prolific songwriting duo whose music has been featured in classic movies such as Mary Poppins (1964) and The Jungle Book (1967).
You might be one of those people just meeting The Sherman Brothers, Robert and Richard, for the first time - although, you’ve certainly heard their music. I could compile a list of films whose catchy tunes can be traced to them but we’d be here all day. They won Oscars for Mary Poppins and were nominated for several others.
Mrs. Lady Zedd grabbed this documentary for me from the Disney Movie Club because we first became aware of the brothers during the early days of the Movie Collection Catalog. During the upgrade I built for 2.0, I started noting the names of bands I like and, not long after, “Them” of the musical variety.
The Sword in the Stone (1963), Mary Poppins (1964), The Jungle Book (1967)… Disney flick after Disney flick, the non-Disney too, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), Snoopy Come Home (1972), Charlotte's Web (1973) - damn, motion picture after motion picture had their musical fingerprints all over it. I call out names I bump into, MLZ learns them from hearing my MCC chatter. The documentary was a thoughtful gift.
Neither of us were prepared for the story The Boys had to tell. Richard and Robert were fire and ice. Creatively, they brought the best out of one another - personally, they wanted nothing to do with each other. Their children lived blocks from each other but were strangers. It was very sad, but it happens.
We came to terms with the reality of things, there were a few pictures during the credits that showed the brothers together - we chose to hope they patched things up. I looked them both up and discovered the older of the two, Robert, had passed a few years after the documentary, then - that last “I didn’t know” - Richard passed just a few days ago. We were having a memorial viewing, but accidentally. It really goes that way sometimes.
On a more positive note, I discovered my favorite Sherman Brothers song turned out to be Walt Disney’s too Feed the Birds (Tuppence a Bag) from Mary Poppins. Their music, born of friction, often served to soothe - the older I get, the more I realize what a gift that can be.
Movie on.

2024.05.29 02:49 SuitableImplement845 Why do Swifties act like Taylor has a genius level intellect?

She's a decent songwriter when she's not trying to be Lana Del Rey/Tori Amos and just sticks to bops like Shake It Off, and she makes good use of a thesaurus and her co-writers/ghost writers (not to mention words and literary references can be googled -- it's not hard), but having watched interviews/videos with her where she isn't reading from a speech/teleprompter, she doesn't strike me as someone with exceptional intelligence (as measured through IQ):
  1. Video of her struggling to use chopsticks, and instead of looking at the people around her for a clue, she continues to stab her food until someone says something [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bkqM0Nll0E\]
  2. Confusing Cricket for Rugby (I'm not a sports fan at all, nor am I from the UK, but even I know the difference). [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6b6E4iFKjSg\]
  3. Confusing 'Warrior' with 'worrier'. ("I worry about literally everything... like...like...everything.") [https://www.tiktok.com/@officialkaidenhsha/video/7317176672510348549\]
  4. Touching fire? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCH\_p6cxYiI\]
  5. Various statements in interviews, which are not necessarily incorrect, but show a lack of interpersonal intelligence such as "I didn't realize I could advocate for a community I'm not a part of".
  6. Constant misunderstanding of references she puts in her songs [https://www.reddit.com/SwiftlyNeutral/comments/18owufm/am\_i\_being\_too\_critical\_of\_this\_taylor\_swift\_lyric/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button\]
  7. Whatever this is: https://www.reddit.com/travisandtaylocomments/1d27134/was_she_drunk_af_during_this_what_was_this/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button I guess I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and say she was drunk. Though her behavior there doesn't contradict how she's been acting at NFL games, Coachella, VMAs, how she acted at the Met Gala back when she went, etc.
I'm sure people reading this thread can find other "Swiftisms" that are better than those examples, but what I'm getting at is she's never said anything profound that she wasn't reading off a card or prompter; she has never offered an original thought or said any of the $3 words she puts in her songs, or said anything that got me to think a different way or see a new viewpoint I hadn't considered. If I were to guess, I'd bet her IQ is between 98-103. She strikes me as someone within the normal range of IQ who wants to be seen as a genius. (I also think she receives a lot of credit for things; credit that her team deserves. But this is a hunch). Hell, Bob Dylan is a far better lyricist with a better vocabulary, and he has a 106 IQ.
The way Swifties talk about her, you'd think she sat around in her free time translating The Iliad, was a walking dictionary, and had mastered chess.
Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences: everyone seems to think she has a great logical-mathematical and naturalistic intelligence when she's more musically and intrapersonal intelligent. I'm not sure if I'd call her linguistically intelligent because the verbal skills aren't there.
I always thought Joe Alwyn and Tom Hiddleston bored her because they've both studied literature beyond a superficial level (naturalistic). Joe studied literature at Bristol for a time; Tom was a Shakespearean trained actor. These are two well read men who appear to be curious about the world and interested in understanding art on a deep level (from what I've gathered in interviews).
Taylor doesn't seem like someone who is a deep thinker when it comes to intellectual pursuits. So why does everyone think of her the way film buffs think of Stanley Kubrick? Or literary circles think of Nabokov? Why is she, more than most pop girlies, getting the Maynard James Keenan treatment with how fans dissect her music when she isn't even superior to many of her contemporaries in terms of writing?
Why does everyone assume that because she reuses a word or phrase from another song she's saying they're related and she's weaving this great web that connects everything? Why do they assume she's constantly telling stories to the public through how she dresses or gestures? A lot of what she does seems accidental, like the 5 holes in the fence and her adopting the stages of grief fan theory.
Tl;dr: Everyone says "Taylor is smarter than Travis", but they both seem vapid and neither are anything close to intellectuals. At least with Travis we know he scored a 22 on the Wonderlic (104 IQ). We have no standardized tests for Swift.
How did the narrative come to be that Taylor is a genius?

2024.05.29 02:44 ICANTJUMPFORMYLIFE (f4m) Roleplay idea- a fake contracted marriage

Hello hello,
I'm in the mood to try a fake contracted marriage kind of RP and well I want to give it a try! I hope this sparks someone's interested and if not then I get it and this was a long shot.
I'm looking for someone who won't mind Roleplaying as a main male character and other side characters that will be involved in this, as well as a literate writer that can write in third person. I prefer to write in between 3 to 5 paragraphs for a Roleplay response but it can vary from time to time depending on the situation in the Roleplay or if I'm busy( which I will try to warn you about prior but life never goes according to plan.)
I do have a few rough ideas towards this as well as a rough draft Roleplay prompt that I can show to those whom are indeed interested in this.
Another thing to consider before reaching out is this will be 18+ and I'm looking for someone between the ages 18 to 24 as I'm in this age range and I'm only comfortable with Roleplaying with others my age, SO PLEASE DON'T LIE ABOUT YOUR AGE! IT'S UNCOMFORTABLE FOR ME!(I'm sorry to yell that but it's happening far too often and it needs to stop!)
And when you reach out don't just say any of these: “Hi” “RP” “Hey, I want to RP” “Still looking?” Etc
As it makes me feel like you aren't actually interested in this at all. Please tell me more about yourself, like what's your favourite food/movie/ coloumusic etc, how long you have been roleplaying for , what your age is and for bonus points send me a sample of your writing so I can get an idea of what your writing style is. Tell Me why you were interested in my Roleplay idea post, stuff like this makes me think you are indeed interested.
As my only warning for those whom have reached this far, I will not accept or interact with anyone that has given me one worders or a few words like in my example up the top , I hope others reading this understand what I'm meaning by that.
Now that I have said my piece, I hope to hear from those who are interested soon and wish you all a splendid rest of your day and thank you for your time. 👋😊
If you're interested please put 💐 somewhere in your introduction response so I know that you have read all of my post!

2024.05.29 02:39 Kiosade Negative Skin Friction within a potentially liquefiable zone?

Hello, I'm a geotech in California, and when we do investigations for any projects related to K-12 schools, they must be reviewed by a special group of geologists who determine if we've sufficiently addressed all geotechnical and geologic hazards at the site.
I recently had a report come back with a comment from the geologist group saying I need to account for downdrag and negative skin friction due to post-seismically-induced liquefaction in the report. I'd never really even heard of that concept before, as it never came up in any of our other projects in the past decade, so I read up on it and found some sort of equations to use (Principles of Foundation Engineer, Das, 2016).
For some background, the site is underlain by a layer of about 8' of medium stiff sandy clay over a layer of 4' loose silty sand, which is further underlain by about 5' of sandy clay before you start encountering bedrock. I calculated skin friction using f(n) = K'σ'(0)tan(δ'), and downdrag using... well, idk how to write it here but it's the integral of Dpif(n), where D is the diameter of the pile. I assumed that the pier will rest at 12' down, or right after they get through the sand layer essentially.
In the example problem I'm following, it seems that in this case, only the clay layer induces negative skin friction/downdrag force, which makes sense to me I suppose, since the liquefiable layer would be assumptively be liquified and therefore acting almost like water, right?. I go and submit my calculated values to the geologists, and they tell me:
"Post-liquefaction induced downdrag is indeed that, a post-liquefaction condition wherein the soils are regaining/have regained their original strength, so neglecting strength within the liquefied zone is unconservative. The negative skin friction should be estimated based on the non-liquefied strength of the soil profile and the cumulative drag load should be calculated considering the full thickness of soil to the bottom of the liquefied zone."
Essentially they want me to also calculate the negative skin friction and downdrag force the liquefiable layer will induce on the pile... but does that even make sense? The way I see it, downdrag is caused by the liquefiable layer settling, dragging down the clay layer above it, which "grips" the pile and pulls down on it. If sand is starting to "regain it's strength", well isn't that at the point AFTER the settlement occurs? How can it even contribute to downdrag?
If anyone has a better, simple way to calculate this stuff, I'd be grateful to learn. The book I used doesn't explain where they came up with their formula, and every other reference i've found online fails to provide a similar, simple equation to use for some reason. Makes me feel like I'm doing it wrong, I dunno.

2024.05.29 02:32 BroadwayBaseball Driving myself crazy

I wrote a full-length musical about baseball two years ago (lyrics and libretto; it’s never had music). I’ve been very proud of that accomplishment, but I know it needs a lot of work before it can get anywhere. Like, it probably needs a full rewrite. I’m just so lost as to how to approach this. I think my issue is that I’m a much better lyricist than librettist, and I am struggling to see how to make this work.
I’ve already made significant conceptual changes to the show: I have truncated it from an A Chorus Line-esque musical in which every character gets their own realization of the main theme to there being three characters who embody the themes. This deepened the three characters’ personalities and problems, rather than having such shallow characters spread out among the team. I think this will be a good change. But I’m just… unsure of where to go from here. Part of me thinks I should find a librettist or playwright to collaborate with, because I have been having such a hard time figuring out the plot structure and writing the scenes.
And then there’s the issue of the lyrics. I like a lot of the songs I wrote for this musical, but I wonder how much of that is because 1) they’re mine and 2) they’re from my first musical. I’ve been working steadily on writing songs since starting the baseball musical two years ago. Today, I looked back at some of the songs I wrote for it, and for the first time I found myself very critical and dissatisfied with them. Which I suppose is good — it means I’ve improved over the last two years. My stance on certain lyrical elements has evolved — for example, I am less fond of imperfect rhymes these days, and very picky about what kinds I use and how I use them.
But now I’m just staring at this project and overwhelmed at how to approach it. I can visualize some aspects of this show: I know how I want the music and the dancing to work with the story. I don’t want it to be a sung-through musical. But every musical I have written so far (1 1/2 full musicals since this baseball one) has been sung-through, including this one. Mostly because it’s so much easier for me to write lyrics than dialogue. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good sung-through musical. I just don’t think that’s the right move for this one. There’s so much you can do with a distinction between speech and song. I really do want to explore that. Obviously, though, playwriting is hard. So I find myself leaning on my crutch — the fact that lyrics are easier for me — and not practicing my dialogue so much. It’s getting to the point where I wonder if I should just be writing concept albums or song cycles instead of fleshed out musicals, or if I should find a collaborator. Ideally — and I’m trying to do this — I would keep pushing through and churn out lots of book scenes for practice until I get better at it. Dialogue has always been the hardest thing for me to write, even when I was writing novels.
I’m just frustrated right now. Thanks for reading this rant.

2024.05.29 02:28 Trumystic6791 Please go read the Fae Tricksters series by SL Prater if you like witty banter, worldbuilding in your fantasy romance and then come back here to gush with me

I just wanted to share a fabulous fantasy series that I have had the pleasure of reading this week. I love it so much and I just had to gush about it (apologies in advance for the long post). Im talking about the wonderfully written, sexy and snarky {Fae Tricksters series by SL Prater}. I listened to the series as audiobooks and the vocal performances by Victoria Aston and Liam Price were quite fun.
The first 2 books {Court of Tricksters} and {King of Tricksters} in the series are essentially one novel with a marriage of convenience plot set in a Regency-ish heavy on the ish fantasy world of fae, humans and other monsters. The MMC Night is a fae duke who needs to speedily get married so he can avoid getting involved in court intrigue and keep his duchy safe. For the last 30 days he has been courting and exchanging gifts with the FMC, Rain, a fae witch and retired soldier who lives with her cat familiar in the forest. Night is hoping Rain's battle prowess can help him keep his people safe. Rain finds him attractive but is not interested in getting married. Night is pressed for time and is feeling a mate bond developing between them so he decides to kidnap her in an old fae marriage custom to see if he can convince her to marry him.
This duology was adorable. Prater takes some fantasy tropes about the fae and upends them. She gives us tons of witty banter, sexual tension, two interesting MCs and a whole host of vibrant side characters with interesting world building and some high stakes. In this series its the FMcs who are reluctant to fall in love. And it all comes to a really satisfying conclusion (and there are no babies in the epilogue).
The next in the series {Wedded to the Wanton Witch by SL Prater} was even better then the previous installments despite the horrible title. Its set in the same world but has a more cozy fantasy low stakes with spice feel to it. Lady Frances is a "spinster" half fae half human witch who needs to marry quickly to save her fathers estates from falling into financial ruin after a he made bad business deal. Because Frances' reputation has been ruined she is ready to marry whomever has the funds to keep the estate afloat. The MMC Jonas is a fae man from the wrong side of the tracks who has amassed tons of wealth and now wants a marriage of convenience with a titled lady who can give him the respectability that money cant buy. Frances and Jonas decide that as sparks fly when they spar at each other they may as well give marriage a try.
This novel has so much to love. It has a rivals to lovers feel to it, the MCs have such good witty banter a la Nick and Nora of the Thin Man movies levels of banter. Their banter continues into letters they write to each other. Plus I give major props to Prater for not having only P in V sex. We get cameos from beloved characters from earlier in the series and also get introduced to a new cast of entertaining side characters for a found family vibe. And most importantly we see two MCs get vulnerable with each other and fall in love.
{Mated to the Mad Marquess by SL Prater} the fourth book was sweet and had lots of the elements that I loved in previous books. For those that like their smut, I give props to Prater for creating an MMC that likes a woman to sit on his face (thats definitely a first for me in reading fantasy romance).
Please give this wonderful series a try. Im off to finish the last book in the series after which I will go into a book slump. Happy reading!

Seasonal Allergies Immunotherapy
Hi I’m planning on applying for OCS when I graduate in May. But im currently taking allergy shots for my seasonal allergies. I would have no problem pausing them during basic etc. Resuming when I’m past training, but is this something I have to do? Is it worth having to get a medical waiver for it? Do I need to tell my recruiter?

Currently in the process of reenlisting as a prior service who was chaptered out in AIT for SI. Submitted and turned over all my paperwork to my recruiter and awaiting MEPS. My recruiter said this is the longest part of the waiting game from his experience. How long should I be expecting to wait realistically? I would ask my recruiter but I feel like I've bothered him enough over the past few weeks lmao. - Thanks!

I've been running/walking 2 miles a day of hill terrain. My recruiter said I need to lose 10 pounds by May 17. I need tips and tricks on how to lose those pounds by then

Army National Guard recruiter says at MEPS you can choose from several dates to start basic. Is that accurate?
If so, typically how many dates are there to choose from and how far in the future? I have a great civilian job, so would like to know my date as far in advance as possible.
Edit: would go on to traditional state OCS (yea, I know the internet’s opinions on it but it fits my life really well) afterwards.

I've got 4 years active and 3 years guard under my belt and I've always put in to my tsp to get the match. I know you need 8 years to keep the matching, but my unit has drained what little motivation I had left for the army, and I've decided I'm done. I'm curious if anyone can help me figure out if there's any option that will help me keep my tsp matching besides a 1 year extension. I doubt the IRR counts towards 8 years, and from what I understand, the inactive guard is simply a pause button. So instead of pushing me to 8 years, it's just delaying my 7th till next year or something. I'm also wondering if a future federal job would contribute to that 8 years or if it has to be all concurrent. Thank you for any help or any resources or links yall can send me to figure this out.

I was wondering if I could join the army with depression, anxiety, and OCD. All diagnosed. I have no suicide attempts or anything like that, no inpatient care either. All of these are somewhat mild and manageable, and I haven't been on any medication. But that was another concern of mine, if I was to get on any medication, would that disqualify me? Thanks a lot.

Im currently a senior in high school trying to enlist in the army since December but I’m at a loss of what to do. I took the asvab scored a 61 but autism came up on my records from when I was a kid. I had to get a full medical Record for meps then they wanted my pharmacy record and now they want some more records my recruiter made me sign a form for my old doctors to get it from them about a month and a week ago. I called him the earlier this week and he said he Kentucky or Kansas (I didn’t hear him well and forgot) doing some training I honestly just don’t know what to do I’ll graduate from high school in a few weeks and I probably have a month after that before my parents kick me out any advice?

Hey all, I wanted to get some insight on whether you all think I would be able to enlist with Crohn's. I've seen online that it's generally marked as an "unwaivable medical condition" but sometimes goes on a case by case basis. My IBD is very mild, I honestly forget that I even have the damn disease because it doesnt effect my daily life at all. I have it managed by taking an 8-week biologic but have gone on extended breaks from it before due to insurance reasons (roughly 2-3 months without any meds) and had no flare ups or any issues of the sort. However, my doctor is thinking of switching me to a daily pill (Rinvoq). I don't have any food sensitivities like a lot of Crohn's patients have (caffeine, alcohol, dairy, etc.) and have never had any surgeries nor does my GI doctor think i'll ever need one. I wanted to enlist for a 17C contract as im already in college for tech anyhow, I'm not sure if that would effect my standing. However, dream MOS is 18X but I figure that may be tougher to get by a recruiter. Any advice or thoughts? Army has been my dream forever and I don't want to have to give it up, so I'd really do anything haha.

I have read a few horror stories where someone enlisted with X,Y, or Z in their contract, but after basic they where told something else and could not confirm the original. For example, someone claims they had a specific location through Option 19, only to later be told they are going somewhere else.
My first question is: has this happened to anyone here, and if so and how was it resolved?
My second question is: after signing your contract, how do you gain acess to it later? Do you receive a physical copy for yourself? Can you download a copy? Is there someone you can ask in the Army to retrieve it for you? Will it be acessable on a portal of somekind?
I am considering enlisting with option 19 and the location is very important to me. Thank you!

I have all of my waivers approved, however, I won’t be swearing in due to job circumstances. If things change, can I still go back into the army or will I blocked out of it forever?

Is a bonus worth choosing the Army over the AF?
In general, I’ve heard that the army’s QoL is less than that of the Air Force. However, the army has way more jobs w bonuses that I’d be interested in. And it’s the same or similar jobs as the Air Force, but w a bonus. I know the Basic Training for army is also longer, but a bonus can be convincing. I have the same question, but in regards to joining the navy as well. I want to focus on my education during my enlistment & get my bachelors & id also like travel opportunities. I haven’t taken my ASVAB yet, it’s scheduled the 16th. I scored rlly well on the PiCAT, and according to those scores I qualify for some army jobs w a bonus. I know it’s not as simple as that, and it’s a whole process & based on what’s available. Just want some opinions on if I was offered an army job w a bonus as opposed to the same/ similar Air Force job without, would you consider it worth it based on your experience?
I already got some answers from a post I made about this, but moderator deleted it and said to comment here. But any additional info/ insight is greatly appreciated. I want to make the best choice for my future in the case that I don't want to do 20 years.

I'm joining up rn and working with a recruiter. We've got my waivers and everything. Pretty much just have to pick a job. For background I was an IET separation back in 2009. From what I've read and what me and my recruiter have gone over I am glossary non-prior service. I could have sworn I read (albeit a while ago) that business rules did not apply to GNPS, so I should be free to pick my MOS. However, I talked to my recruiter earlier today and he wants me to sit with his 1SG and go over the job options available for prior service. Am I wrong and I just get what I get?

Please help!
I was looking to join the guard but in my medical records it shows I had Guillan barre. I was feeling some numbness in my legs, but looking back at it, it was very cold outside and I was just a bitch who would try to get out of school by any means possible. They did a spinal tap and never found any trace of the disease however. I was in the hospital for a couple of days, the gave me immunoglobulin and then I went home and nothing ever came of it. I am currently completely asymptomatic This was when I was 12 or 13 years old. Now I’m 18 and want to join but my recruiter said I have to get all the records and stuff. What is the chance that I will still be able to join? I tried looking it up online but I couldn’t find an answer. Also if I’m able to join, will I need a medical waiver?

I’m looking to graduate and enlist in a month but can’t decide on what MOS I want. I think 11B because I don’t want to individuate and do army shit or 68W but I’m not sure if I can get advanced combative training or other schools I want. I want to do something that’s “high speed” and meaningful while working my way towards Ranger reg. Is the 82nd Airborne a good pathway to that? How is civil affairs? Can you enlist directly into it while being active duty?

Hi everyone! I’m a high school student planning on joining the military. I’m Muslim, so I want to be sure that whichever branch I join is accommodating to Muslim needs. If it changes anything, I’m planning joining through the ROTC route.
My main concerns are, does the Army give beard waivers for Muslims? Is it possible to take short breaks throughout the day to pray? Can you fast during Ramadan? Can you be provided with halal (no pork/no alcohol) food?
Also, I’m interested in infantry or armor (or any kind of ground forces officer in general). Would these accommodations interfere with being selected for these careers or being mission ready? (Such as a beard, fasting, etc.)

What are the odds of getting a waiver for ulcerative colitis? I was EPTS’d out in march 2023 after being diagnosed while I was at 30th AG. My GI said I was in remission as of jan of this year. So my recruiter told me that I have to get a lease first, but the thing is, is that we don't have one with our landlord. It's more like an oral lease and he's a slumlord who never tries to communicate with any of us. That being said, my recruiter then said that I should find a lease online and edit it to where I state that I'm paying the rent to my sister instead (who has a valid ID) He also stated that my sister and I have to go to a check-cashing place to get it notarized. Is this all ok to do and will the BHA be approved? Also if it's approved, does this mean that the rent we pay which is $1,365.50, is going to be paid for while I'm away and how exactly??

Questions about Virginia National Guard
I want to do OCS! Now here’s my confusion. My recruiter is saying that the moment I swear in is the moment my contract is going to start and will count towards that 6 year! So, if he is right, I will basically complete 2 years training if I do state OCS. But I would like to have more control on what branch I get! My top 3 are: cyber warfare, signal, and intel. Should I do accelerated in that case? Also how likely am I to get one of those aforementioned three if I do state OCS of 18 months? My bachelor was in Computer Engineering, and I am currently enrolled in ASU for master’s pursuing Computer Science! Will I get that 24k a year tuition fee because he said there’s a possibility I might get it since it’s fully online? Can I get tuition assistance and loan repayment both? Does getting either one incur additional service time?

So my husband is going to meps next week. he has 2 different sets of scars on his left arm. He works at a mobile home plant building houses. One was from when he got caught on a nail so it's a little deeper looking and another was from some sheet metal at work. He didn't disclose it to his boss because he works on a line and it would've put his team behind so he just put some bandaids on it and went about his day and cleaned it up when he got home. This was about 1-2 years ago. What is his meps experience going to be like? They aren't self harm obviously but we've heard horror stories about the doctors at meps not believing people and DQ them. He honestly forgot about telling his recruiter and his recruiter has already sent in all his medical history and got him scheduled for meps. Should he still go ahead and tell his recruiter or just wait and disclose it at meps?

I'm currently in process Enlisting in the Reserve, while holding an associate's degree in mechanical engineering technology, with some side education in programming. While I am working towards my bachelor's degree, I'm looking to pick an MOS that will help my career, or at the very least, be interesting. I don't remember my scores, but my Recruiter told me whatever I pick, my score won't be the limiting factor.
Top of the list for career jobs is 15 series, from what I've heard from currently enlisted in my friend group, wrenching on aircraft in general is a fast track to a cushy job on the outside with my education. 25 series looks boring but useful as anything IT/electrical complements my degree. On the more interesting side, I was looking at 91 series, either 91F or 91P.
Am I going anywhere wrong with any of these jobs? Anything I should be keeping in mind?

Hi all,
I am a permanent resident here is the US, and last week I finished my ASVAB mock test with a 95 on my AFQT. The recruiter says I am eligible for everything that doesn't require a security clearance which is kind of a problem as my dream MOS are the 35-series and 17-series (As both of these are locked behind clearance requirement)
After some thinking, I narrow down to the following, but there are still too many so I hope I can get your feedback on what I am doing. My aims are: a/I want something that will translate into the civilian world well if my time in the army doesn't go well, b/I want an MOS that can advanced through warrant or becoming a commission officer if my time in the army does go well, and c/I want to push myself to the limit and break out of my comfort zone to see where I can go. If I sound arrogant, please forgive for that: I am just trying to be as careful as possible. I am nearly reaching my thirty, and I want to take deliberate steps because I no longer have the luxury of youth and family to try and fail.
The MOS are:
11-series, 12B and 12D: I have a soft spot for these despite knowing they don't translate into the civilian world. But in my heart somewhere is a wild child that wants to test my physical prowess and wants to blow things up. I do know my knees and lower back will hate me for picking this.
15 series: With exceptions to 15C, 15J, and other works related to flying or being mechanics of sensitive equipment, I can be an aircraft technicians. I read that there are demands for airplane mechanics but I don't know much about this field other than a/I got to repair planes, b/people seem to hate it because you have to sign a long contract if you become a warrant.
68A: I did see this MOS getting recommended a lot but after reading its description, I am not very sure if I want to do it either both in the army or afterwards. I must also admit I don't have a good insights onto the day to day life of this job. Can someone shed some light about this MOS for me?
68C: Becoming a nurse seems like a very safe choice out of the military given that the BLS projects nurse to be in high demand and being able to take care of your family sounds like a big plus to me; however, I don't know if I like being a nurse. My parents were doctors, and having seen the hospital environment I can say I am not a fan. I also look into 68A but BLS prospect for it didn't seem good, and the training on 68E, 68D, and 68V look a little bit too short. Do you really become a dental assistant just with 10 weeks of training?
68W: I must admit, I have a soft spot for 68W as it allows me to be both learn some medical skills and be on the field. However, I do notice that 68W only translates to paramedic/EMT post-army, while 68C translates to becoming a nurse (which is more valued and regarded as "better" than paramedic or EMT and thus in higher demand)
88H, 92A, 92F, and 92Y: I pick these because, according to BLS, there is a projected increase need for people in warehousing and transportation. From my limited understanding of the fields, you will be in charge of handling logistics such as maintaining unit inventory, ordering supplies and weapons for your units, etc. but I am not very sure on the difference between, say, 92Y and 92A.
So, can you give me a suggestions? May anyone who has been in these MOS share their experience to help me pick? What are some of the MOS I miss?
Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,

How can i improve my chances of success after the military?
I'm going to meps in 2 weeks and im shooting for a 25 series mos. 25H was what was available at the recruiters after i took my practice asvab. I'm not the brightest bulb but, hey, I'll take it. Aside from college ,which i want to continue to pursue throughout my time in the army (or after depending on my mental fortitude once i'm actually in,) how can i set myself up for success in the civilian world? Any input from past 25h or 25 series who somehow translated their career into decent paying jobs will be much appreciated.
I'll add I'm only joining the army for the college benefits and free training as i come from a poor household and have no other feasible way to pay for it.

Hello everyone,
I was recently laid off from a $64k job, and honestly, I'm not too upset. I was already feeling burnt out and unhappy, staying primarily for the promised educational benefits to facilitate a career change, which obviously fell through with the job loss. Now, I'm considering my options and the military as a new path has been sounding appealing to an extent. The VA loan and GI Bill are particularly enticing because they would help me pursue a degree without getting into debt, and enabling the career change I've been considering. And the thought of being able to buy a house at this age/economy seems awesome.
At 28, I'm weighing the implications of joining now, especially considering the pay cut and spending four years AD without the guarantee of going overseas which for me would make it much more worthwhile. Also, I'd likely be one of the older members among younger peers, which is another factor to consider. My entry rank would be E3 due to my associate degree told by the Air force recruiter I met, but I'll need a moral waiver for a misdemeanor I had at 18, which might limit my job options not to mention she told me I would have to be at the disposal of whatever the Air Force wanted me to do? Which I am assuming means that I could enlist for one thing that they tell me nope get your doing this. The Air Force recruiter told me that I would be just fine and I would be able to get in as long as my ASVAB score is high enough.
I'm torn about whether to commit to AD and save myself or a longer term in the military via reserves but still stuck in the same loop of feeling in fulfilled, unable to afford university and in a place I would rather leave. Insights from anyone who joined the military later or faced similar decisions would be incredibly helpful.
Thanks for any advice!
P.S I am also ok with the idea of the military as a career as I would still be able to retire earlier than many of my peers if I pursue the 20 year route..

So when I was in the first time I was a 25U. I was 16 when I swore in to secure my mos and left at 18YO. I’ve decicided to go back in. Im picking between 19 jobs, I qualify for all of them as I keep my old asvab scores. I scored over a 105 in everything so I have a pretty big list to pick from. These jobs have good jobs outside of the army and that’s my angle, I know 25U translates to a good job outside of the army but it’s not my cup of tea. So any info on the jobs in the army and civilian life for these mos would be greatly appreciate. The jobs are: 68L 68X (specifically because I want to help vets who are/have suffered) 88H 35F 25B 35M 35G 35L 88K 88N 88U 27D 31E 12M 15Q 15N 25U 88L 88M

Background: Greencard holder, 6yr+ experience in IT field. No degree. Married.
Always wanted to join the military and finally have the opportunity to do so.
What I want to experience from the military;
I want the opportunity to grow in the IT field and have military experience and later on attain a contractor job in overseas installations. Very interested in being able to move overseas for a few years specially Japan.
My biggest interest is to grow in my career + experience other countries.
Recruits have also told me that for active duty they are allowing first duty station to be chosen because the army apparently has a shortage of people joining so they want to motivate people to join by allowing them to choose duty stations. This has made me consider going active IF they aren't lying about this + the job security has always been a plus to me.
My primary plan was :
Going reserve, getting my citizenship while in basic training, changing my mos to 25B then finding government contracting job overseas preferably (Japan) and changing my unit to Japan to drill there (Camp Zama). Overall my biggest goal is to move overseas and be in the IT field.
What is the best route? Advice is greatly appreciated in advance:)

Thank you!

He didn't disclose it to his boss because he works on a line and it would've put his team behind so he just put some bandaids on it and went about his day and cleaned it up when he got home. This was about 1-2 years ago. What is his meps experience going to be like? They aren't self harm obviously but we've heard horror stories about the doctors at meps not believing people and DQ them. He honestly forgot about telling his recruiter and his recruiter has already sent in all his medical history and got him scheduled for meps.

Background: Greencard holder, 6yr+ experience in IT field. No degree. Married.
Always wanted to join the military and finally have the opportunity to do so.
What I want to experience from the military;

2024.05.29 02:24 DumbRedditorCosplay What is the most basic face recognition workflow?

I have a group project for a university class where the professor wanted us to come up with any idea for using face detection for some application in industrial settings. The problem is some dumbass in my group submitted an idea he had by misunderstanding this completely and his idea involves face recognition (matching a person's ID instead of just detecting the presence of a face). The professor accepted it and said we would have to look for a different model because the open source model he instructed the class to use only does face detection and some features like smiling etc, it doesn't do ID.
Now I want to know if it is possible to do this: we have a small dataset of faces that should be known and the algorithm is supposed to just log on the database for documentation purposes which class of person has entered a place. Call it type 1 employee and type 2 employee, so all faces that can access this place should be either type 1 or type 2 known faces. We will log the known faces with their names and timestamp. If there is a unkown face then we will log the timestamp for each unknown face.
It is not a security feature just a log, and it is also not meant to be commercially viable, it is just a proof of concept for a college class so I am ok with relatively low accuracy as long as it is right more often than not (I am sure the professor will understand that high accuracy on this would be hella expensive and time consuming).
So we will use a video feed, check the face (for simplicity I think we should make this a close up video with a webcam/selfie cam, one face at a time, which is not realistic irl but alas), and then take a still shot from the video and the picture will hopefully be high quality enough.
I am finding on google open source models like FaceNet and OpenFace, I just don't know which one is simpler and how the workflow goes.
Can these pretrained models just take two face pictures and tell if they are the same person out of the box? Do I need to finetune the models with each face I want to recognize? If so, do I need very many pictures from different angles/lighting/backgrounds/clothes for each person that will be pre-registered? If I do need to finetune or do any kind of training, do you think it is possible to achieve this for free using google collab? I am ok if we need to spend a little bit of money on some cloud provider but not much, it is not worth it to spend a lot of money for this (if there is no way around spending hundreds of bucks for this then I will tell the group we need to convince the professor to allow us to change the project midway through).
What is the most basic way you'd go about this if you had to do it considering it is not supposed to be commercially viable? No need for details just a general outline. If someone could name an open source model which they are sure can definitely do this on google collab free tier I'd be very very grateful.

Same humor. Loves to travel, never had to force a conversation. etc just naming a few. From the start of our relationship I met him 3 weeks fresh our of high school. He was in a very tough spot. My Fiancée at the time didn’t have a car so 4 months into the relationship and I spent all my graduation money + savings on surprising him with a new car. Within that same year he cheated. (I forgave him but made him delete all social media and I do check his phone regularly.) Through out the first two years of our relationship I got his credit fixed, his debt paid off and got him on a straight path including getting his record straightened out( by this time I’m 19 going on 20) I thought that would absolutely show him how dedicated I was to him and our future. Show him How he didn’t have to struggle alone. Yes I was a young teenager but Ive been working since I was 15. I had my own money why not help someone in need?? Fast forward multiple years of this relationship. I handle all house hold responsibilities along with both of our taxes, Bills and car maintenance etc all adult responsibilities you can think of I handle. He would tell me how appreciative he was and how he couldn’t imagine life without me etc. I felt like he valued me . Through this relationship he’s cheated 3 times. I forgave him everytime. ( now looking back I believed I wouldn’t have ever found better so I took him back so I wouldn’t mess up my chance at finally having a husband). (Over these last 2 years i’m just now getting my confidence and realizing I am actually k good looking I think). I showed up alot for this man and made alot of serious life sacrifices to help him. he’s never showed up for me without me having to beg multiple times . Last week I simply asked him “Why do you never get my flowers or write me back love letters?” He knows how much I love the idea and thought of love letters. He loves it too. I wake up early every morning before he goes to work. I pack his lunch box and write a love letter EVERY morning. (not exaggerating) he has duffle bag he keeps filled with all my love notes to him.
His response to my Question: I know you’ve asked me for them before but to be honest i’m just not there in our relationship yet to be getting you flowers”
Me: “What do you mean you aren’t there yet??”
His response: “You want all these extravagant things but I’m not there yet emotionally to give that to you. You need to be patient with me, You’ll get that from me down the line”
That hurt me a lot. So I asked him how could he say that after all the stuff Ive bring to the table? All the things I do to make sure his life is easier for solely just him. I don’t deserve flowers from you yet??
He just responded saying how it may not be fair to me but that’s just where he is at. I asked him how can you say you aren’t emontionally there to get me flowers but you made the decision to purpose to me in front of your whole family. (Literally just his whole family, when I asked where was mine he said he totally forgot to think about any of them… He didn’t even ask my dad for his blessings)…. Selfish!
His response:” Because I love you so much. I have no doubt you’d be an amazing wife, my mom loves you, my family adores you. I know if I have kids with you our kids will be loved and raised right. You’re always there for me so I know you’ll always be there for my family and our future kids. You act like such a great wife already. “
In that moment I told him I couldn’t do it anymore and that I was done. He was so confused. He asked why. And how he can change and If I really wanted flowers that bad to just “text me on the days you want them and I’ll go pick it up it’s that easy” “You want to leave me over Flowers?”.
I want the love I give to be reciprocated. I want to have peace of mind knowing if something goes wrong in life I have my future husband to fall back on or even simply just call. I want to be given flowers without asking. I want love letters. I want date nights. I want to be a more feminine woman and not be the one taking both of our cars to mechanics for Oil changes, alignments, Tune Ups etc. I want all the years love and sacrifice I put into this relationship to have meant something. I feel used I feel like I was completely used and taken for granted. I thought being with an Older man would come with stability and a man that can lead and teach me, someone I can learn from. That was the sole reason I stayed I thought once I was able to get him out of his rut he would be able to be the man he talked so much about being but 6 years later. He hasn’t progressed at all. He looks to me the person 10 years younger than him to get things done with shame or any inkling in his body to help make anything easier for me. I can’t do this anymore, I’m not happy .I want to live life like a 23 year old should. I’ve never been to the club. I’ve never had a girls night. I’ve never even sat at the bar before. I never lived solely just for myself. I never done alot of the normal things a regular early women in her 20’s would have experienced. I sacrificed alot for him and it all was for nothing. I’m so hurt and angry. It’s been 3 weeks no contact. But just yesterday a friend of mine sent me a video of him spotted with his best friends blowing money (that he owes me) at a strip club. I’m trying to just let go and let God but I’m so angry. I robbed myself out of so much young experiences I should’ve had by now.
How do I force myself to Unlove someone I genuinely cared about so much?
TL;DR: Asked Fiancé of 6 year for Flowers and a Love letter . Got denied. Told me he’s not emotionally “there yet” to get me flowers… but was able to purpose to me??

2024.05.29 02:19 TeachingCharacter660 How do you write a referral?

I've never written a referral letter before.
I'm trying to write one for someone who is super adaptable. He's always worked officially as a forklift driver, but he's crazy good at construction and maintainance too.
To put it straight, his whole official resume is forklift. He's trying to apply for a building maintenance roll (significant pay increase). He's been working on flipping a house. He re-sealed the basement, installed drywall, trim, painted and re-carpeted. New toilets, all new faucets. Replaced floor coverings (carpet to laminate), even got the permits to do repairs to the subfloor and did the repairs himself and they were approved by the township. Right now he's replacing all the ceiling fans.
If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have known how to shut the water off when we had a water line to the coffee maker break at 1 a.m. (I'm third shift, he's applying to the company I work at where his lesson for me when he replaced his faucets stopped the water from continuously leaking at my company so I could go get help without worrying about water damage. I was alone in the office when this broke. His lesson saved us a lot of money).
What else can I put down that sounds professional aside from adaptability? How many points do I highlight? Do I include that what he taught me saved us money from repairing water damage? He ended up helping my company with what he taught me, that's kind of important.

Exfiltration

[A/N: This chapter beta-read by Lady Columbine of Mystal.]

Mik
Papa Juliet calling Mike Whiskey. I’m in. Guy says she’s in room one-zero-three-eight, do you copy?
“I copy one zero three eight,” Mik replied quietly. She looked up at the room numbers and noted that she was at least on the correct floor. “Going there now, over.”
It was a good thing that even evil corporate secret facilities had their safety procedures. As she jogged along the corridor in what she thought was the right direction, she spotted an evacuation map of the facility, complete with room numbers. Studying the plan for a moment, she traced out a path, memorised it, then took off running.
Although people fresh from Earth often complained how hard it was to maintain a good running speed on Mars due to lack of traction, Mik had no such problems indoors. The floors weren’t the best for cornering on, but she saw no issue in running halfway up the wall to kick off in the direction she wanted to go. Her enhanced vestibular systems aided considerably in keeping her balance, no matter where her feet were placed at the time.
Now that she knew where she was going, she reached the corridor that she needed in less than a minute. But then she encountered something that wasn’t a barrier as such, but certainly caused her to think twice about what was going on.
At first glance, there was little to worry about. What she’d found was an airlock of a make and model ubiquitous to half the buildings on Mars. Given that the outside atmosphere of Mars could only be survived by one person currently on the surface of the planet, the presence of an airlock would normally have been easy to explain away as an essential safety precaution.
What gave Mik pause was the fact that the airlock was inside the building, and in fact was between her and the person she was here to rescue. This made her ask herself a very specific question:
Which side of this airlock is expected to be depressurised, and why?
There was only one logical answer, and it did nothing for her peace of mind. If she was reading the signs correctly, the person behind Dani’s abduction and subsequent imprisonment was willing to set up a lethal situation for their captive, as a last-ditch screw-you to Mik. They probably wouldn’t kill her immediately, but if Mik tried to get her out, it would go from zero to fatal in very little time indeed. And in fact, if the airlock was code-locked on the other side, it would also serve to lock Mik into the area, allowing Cyberon to simply walk in and scoop her up at their leisure.
If I keep going, I’ll be trapped and she dies no matter what. Cyberon security’s probably on the way, so Pete might not be able to get us both out in time. If we pull back, they might decide she’s no use as bait, and kill her anyway. Bad end, do not want.
Okay, so I’ve seen the trap. How do I turn it around?
*****
Dani
The cell was cold, the floor hard to sleep on, and the ration bars they’d been feeding her tasted like salted sawdust, but that wasn’t the worst part. Dani had been uncomfortable before; some of the places her father had worked had lacked many civilised creature comforts. But she’d had friendly company and she’d been able to keep track of what was going on in the larger world.
Here, she had neither.
She wasn’t sure if it was deliberate torture or just a total lack of caring about her wellbeing, but the lighting outside the Perspex panel that fronted her cell never varied. Neither dim nor overbright, it was just constant. They’d taken her watch at the same time as they’d sequestered the rest of her belongings and shoved her into an anonymous coverall, so she had no way of keeping track of time, except by way of her biological rhythms and the delivery of the food rations (which in itself was worryingly irregular, like they kept forgetting that she needed to eat).
Even the Suit, as she called him (she didn’t have a name for him, but she had a huge number of highly unflattering descriptors for him) hadn’t shown up in some time. At first, she’d been able to mark off the days in her mind by his visits, either gloating over how Mik was going to walk straight into his trap or attempting to interrogate her about Mik’s habits and potential actions. She’d done her best to give him no joy either way, which in hindsight was possibly a mistake, as he didn’t visit at all these days.
All she got was a guy walking past the cell every few hours and glancing in to make sure she hadn’t miraculously dismantled the lock and spirited herself out of the building. They didn’t talk to her, even when she called out and tried to open lines of communication. She knew they could hear her, but their faces just closed off and they walked on.
It had been days, maybe weeks, she was sure of that much. A month, even two? She couldn’t be sure. A couple of times she dreamed she’d been rescued, that the wall of the cell had just opened up and she’d walked out; the emotional crashes, when she woke and discovered the reality of the situation, had been devastating. Pretty soon, she figured, she’d be hallucinating even when she was awake, and it just wouldn’t matter anymore.
So, when she saw Mik herself step into view in front of the cell, wearing her usual t-shirt and jeans and heavy boots, along with a badass-looking long-coat, she didn’t even react at first. Either it was someone else and her eyes were playing tricks on her, or she was asleep and dreaming the whole thing, or her mind had finally cracked. Didn’t matter; Mik wasn’t there.
She waited for the apparition of her friend to morph into one of the guards or to evaporate altogether, or maybe rip the door off its runners, but none of that happened. Instead, Mik examined the lock and frowned. Then she pulled out a notebook and pencil—pens had a really hard time working in vacuum, so Mik always went old-school when it came to passing notes—and scribbled something.
Dani had never been able to read a damn thing in a dream. The words and letters always came jumbled up, probably because reading was a logical thing and dreams were by their nature illogical. So, she was fully prepared for whatever the note showed to be pure gibberish.
Instead, to her surprise, it was totally readable. NO AIR OUT HERE. NEED U TO PREP FOR DECOMPRESS, CLOSE EYES. WILL OPEN DOOR, GET U OUT. DO U TRUST ME?
She read it through several times, trying to make sense of it. Mik was still standing there, waiting, though she’d glanced from side to side a couple of times. The writing on the notepad was holding steady, not changing to something else.
Is this real? Is this actually happening?
Tears sprang to her eyes as she first began to allow herself to consider the concept. She tried to keep herself under control; every other time she’d believed she was getting out, her expectations had been cruelly dashed. But she could read the note. She could read the note.
Climbing painfully to her feet—there was little chance for exercise in the cell, and the nutrient bars didn’t leave her with much in the way of excess energy—she went over to the Perspex panel that served as a door. “Are you real?” she asked, putting her hand on the panel. “Are you really there?”
Mik nodded, then flipped a page and scribbled some more. IM REAL. IM GETTING U OUT OF THERE. DO U TRUST ME? Then she tore the page from the pad and dropped it.
Instead of fluttering lazily to the ground—under Martian gravity, it always took even longer than it did on Earth—it fell straight down, at the standard three point seven one metres per second per second.
Okay, that’s not something a hallucination would bring up. There’s only Martian air pressure out there. She’d had dreams of walking unprotected on the surface of Mars. The human brain couldn’t create the consequences of low air pressure out of whole cloth. That was a leap of logic that it couldn’t make.
Dani took a deep breath and nodded. “I trust you,” she said, aware that Mik was practised at reading lips. “I just don’t know how long I can go without air.” Attempting to hold one’s breath in vacuum or near-vacuum, she knew, was a recipe for ruptured lungs. “Should I hyperventilate?”
Instead of writing more notes, Mik made the hand gesture for ‘no time’, then pointed at her first note. Dani nodded, then stepped back. Closing her eyes, she opened her mouth, working her jaw to allow her ear canals to connect to her sinus cavities.
She heard it when the door began to open, the thin high screech of escaping air, deepening to a rumble as the air pressure dropped. Her ears popped, then popped again as she kept working her jaw. Air flowed out of her lungs, then an involuntary belch joined it.
Her skin prickled and her eyes were uncomfortable behind her tightly closed eyelids, but she didn’t dare open them. Micro-pressure did nasty things to exposed eyeballs; they didn’t pop (that was something even the stupidest of space dramas didn’t do anymore), but the sheen of tears on the exterior surface had been known to freeze or evaporate, neither of which was good for the eye.
Pressure was building unpleasantly in her gut, and she did her best to relax her sphincters. Another burp was followed by a small frrrt, and she silently blessed the fact that the nutrient bars were designed for vacuum workers, who didn’t want to share their EVA suits with abdominal gases.
And then a mouthpiece was pressed over her face, and air flowed into her lungs. Reaching up, she grabbed the pony bottle, amazed that she’d actually forgotten how Mik carried it everywhere. Once she had it, Mik let go and grabbed her arm, urging her forward.
Under the guidance of her friend, she stumbled out of the cell then turned left. They moved as fast as she was able, though she had to keep her eyes closed. How Mik had even gotten there, and what the plan was to get her out, she wasn’t sure, but she trusted Mik implicitly.
They went down the length of one corridor and then another one, much farther than she would’ve been able to go with her eyes closed and no air. Alone, she would’ve stumbled aimlessly until she died. Then they entered what she figured was an airlock, the supposition borne out when a door closed behind them and the air pressure started rising again.
When she felt it was safe, she opened her eyes and handed the pony bottle back to Mik. “Th-thanks,” she rasped, her voice rusty from disuse. “You came back. I didn’t know if you would.”
“It’s been a month, let me tell you,” Mik said lightly. “I had to get reinforcements, but here I am.”
Something clanked at floor level, and Dani looked down to see that Mik had just knocked over a bucket. “Okay,” she asked. “What’s a bucket doing in an airlock?”
“Holding the inner door open so nobody can remotely shut it behind me,” Mik explained. The other airlock door opened, and she stepped out. “C’mon, we’ve got places to be.”
Dani followed along. Her joints still felt creaky and stiff, but she was damned if she was going to slow Mik down now. “Where’d you go for reinforcements? Tharsis? Wouldn’t they just send stern memos to Cyberon or something?”
“Yeah, that’s why I didn’t go to them.” As Mik and Dani turned a corner, Dani saw two of the guards on the ground, along with a third one in an EVA suit, and a fourth person in an EVA suit standing over them with a metal bar in his hand. “Hey, we’re ready to suit up and go.”
The standing man flipped up his faceplate. “Good. The suit’s just outside. I’ll keep watching these clowns while you go get it.”
“On it.” Mik tipped Dani a wink, then ducked out through the airlock. A moment later, she was back, bringing a suit in Dani’s size.
“I was wondering how you were going to get me out of here.” Dani didn’t waste time, starting to haul on the suit even as she addressed Mik. She didn’t know the guy, but if Mik trusted him, she was willing to as well.
“It was either this or terraform the whole planet so you could just walk out normally, and terraforming was taking too long.” Mik eyed the guards unfavourably. “How badly were these assholes treating you?”
“They didn’t hit me or anything,” Dani said. “Just fed me and watched me. It was their boss who said all the nasty stuff about how you were gonna fall in his trap.”
“Mm.” Mik looked like she didn’t want to drop the matter, but the guy put his hand on her shoulder and she subsided. “Okay, then. Ready to go?”
“Nearly.” Dani locked her helmet in place, then triggered the oxygen flow. The telltales showed up green, so she nodded and gave the thumb-to-forefinger all-good gesture.
The guy with Mik flipped down his faceplate, and all three of them stepped into the airlock. It was a tight squeeze but Mik was skinny, and Dani didn’t take up much room even in a suit. “We’re going to have to move fast,” the guy said over her radio. “I have a feeling Cyberon security is incoming with everything they’ve got.
Yeah, no crap.” That was definitely Mik. “Just by the way: Pete, meet Dani; Dani, meet Pete.
Pleased to meet you,” Pete added. “Lieutenant Pete Janssen, Orbital Rescue, at your service.
Even while Dani was trying to figure out what an Orbital Rescue pilot was doing on the surface of Mars, the airlock opened and they hustled out. The surrounding terrain was the very opposite of flat, and Dani had no idea which way to go. And then Mik’s eyes opened wide and she turned her head, looking up into the sky.
Lander,” she said. “I can hear it coming in.
Dani had very little experience with matters like this, but she had an idea what was coming next anyway. “They’ll be bringing in ground troops, won’t they? Looking for us?”
Got it in one.” Mik started off into the rocks. “We have to get to the ’hopper before they catch up with us.
Copy that, princess.” Pete hooked one arm under Dani’s. “Let’s get moving.
Dani had thought the nightmare was over but as she discovered, it was just beginning. Even with Pete and Mik helping her up and over the obstacles in their way, she quickly ran out of energy. Fear-generated adrenaline was well and good, but it had its limits, and her arms and legs were soon powerless noodles.
“Leave me,” she begged. “They’ll catch you, and this’ll all be for nothing.”
And if we leave you, it’ll also be for nothing,” Mik told her grimly. “I had to do it once. It’s not happening a second time.
Take her,” Pete said. “I’ll go and draw them off. Even if they catch me—”
Mik cut him off. “If they can’t use you to get us back, they’ll kill you. You take her, you’re stronger than me. If they’ve got guns, which I’m pretty sure they do, they’re less likely to shoot at me than you. I’ll meet you at the ’hopper.
Not giving Pete the option to argue, she let go Dani’s arm and vanished into the chaotic terrain.
Wait—” began Pete, then swore. “Dammit! Okay fine, she’s not giving us a choice. Let’s get you to the ’hopper.
As they moved off, Dani had to ask the question. “Why did you call her princess, earlier?”
Well, she’d just told us her story, and I made a joke …
*****
Mik
The security troopers were good at moving in EVA suits, and they definitely had guns. There were also a lot of them, which was going to make this tricky as hell. Still, Mik had a few advantages on her side, some of which they hopefully didn’t know about.
She peered around a rocky outcrop at a bunch of them, who were conferring over some kind of digital map. If they wanted to use that thing to make any kind of straight path through this labyrinth of Martian terrain, they had to be dreaming. The trouble was, if they just pushed forward en masse, they could comb every last hiding place, no matter how tricky she was. Which was why she had to pull them away from the ‘logical thinking’ mindset and into the ‘chase me’ mindset.
Picking up a friable-looking rock, she stepped into view, then hurled her missile directly at the faceplate of one of the troopers facing her. It burst on impact, leaving a cloud of dust behind. Before they could bring their guns to bear, she ducked out of sight again, heading down a twisting, turning alleyway of rock. Her natural agility and balance made up for the uneven footing, allowing her to move much faster than the troopers behind her.
The call would be going out now, converging every security trooper in the area on that spot. This included any of them that might’ve been on course to discover the rille where she and Pete had hidden the rock-hopper. If they were chasing her, they weren’t going after anyone else.
She paused after a minute or so of movement, listening hard and with her hands on the rocks on either side. Sound didn’t travel well in this atmosphere, though her ears were attuned to pick up what little there was. Vibrations through the ground were sometimes more useful, and she fancied she could feel the security troops coming her way, just as much as she could hear the scuffing and stumbling among the chaotically tumbled boulders.
The next time she nailed someone in the faceplate with a rock, one of the troopers shot at her. It didn’t come close enough to worry her, though the whole experience of being shot at in general was a new and unpleasant one. She got her target, though, dusting the man plus his comrades with the ever-present fines. The fewer of her pursuers who could see properly, the better.
And then Pete’s voice crackled in her mastoid earpiece. “We’re at the ’hopper. Want a pickup?
“No, don’t,” she replied, talking quietly into the mouthpiece even though she knew the troopers couldn’t hear her. “They’ll shoot you out of the sky. Hold tight, I’m coming to you.”
A dozen troopers looked around in surprise as she jumped out of concealment almost within arm’s reach. She was holding two large rocks that she’d selected carefully, each one with the consistency of chalk. Both left her hands even before her feet hit the ground; not aimed at the troopers, they instead hit the rocks on either side. A great cloud of fines billowed over all of the troopers, but she wasn’t waiting around for it to dissipate.
There was a nice straight pathway for her to retreat down, but she didn’t take it. Instead, she ducked into the first niche she found that was barely large enough to take her, and flipped up the hood of the long-coat so that it covered her head. Thus concealed, facing the rock and holding still, she hopefully looked like part of the landscape.
She both heard and felt the rush of booted feet behind her; yelling inside their helmets so loudly that she heard that too. Thirty seconds ticked by in her head, and there were no stragglers following along. Cautiously, she peered out from behind the coat. She was alone.
By now there would be enough troopers spread through the chaotic terrain for false sightings to be happening on the regular, and in fact she heard a few random shots here and there which bore out that idea. But that wasn’t her problem, so she slipped unseen through the dragnet until she came to the rille. Jumping from foothold to foothold, she descended to where Pete and Dani were just getting settled on the rock-hopper.
Oh, good,” Pete said. “You’re here. I was starting to worry.
Can we go now?” asked Dani plaintively. “I just want to get out of here.
“We can,” Mik confirmed, scrambling up onto the rock-hopper and strapping herself into the middle seat, which had been installed by the crusty McPherson. She flicked the wake-up switch on the flight control computer (also supplied by McPherson), then activated the controls and lit off the attitude rockets. Slowly, then with more power as she fed fuel to the main rocket, the rock-hopper climbed into the air.
Straight back up to the ship?” asked Pete hopefully.
“Not quite,” Mik said. “They’ve almost certainly got ships up there that can shoot us down if they see us coming up out of their area of interest, so we’re going to have to stay low for the moment until we get out from under their umbrella. Our best chance for doing that is to leave their turf altogether.”
Angling the rock-hopper eastward, she applied more thrust, and they shot away across the tumbled landscape.

[A/N: And we’re coming to a head. The next chapter or two should see the end of this run of the adventures of Mik Wallace, Martian Walker. That’s not to say it’ll be the end of the story, but it’ll be the end of the origin story.]

2024.05.29 02:17 Character-Entrance21 Advice

My mother was just in the hospital for septic shock. While there her lungs started failing so they put her on a ventilator. She was on the ventilator for 4 days and then was brought back to stable and moved out of the icu into a room. While in the hospital they figured out that she has something wrong with her heart making her a huge risk for a massive heart attack and that she needed open heart surgery. She needed round the clock care getting up and moving to the bathroom ect because of her foot that she had just had surgery on a month ago, which was the source of the sepsis. A little background, my mother has never been any good at managing money, so I have been paying for 70% of everything that she has including cigarettes(at least a pack a day or more) and goody powders (9 or more a day). While she was in the hospital she asked me to bring her goody powders to which I refused. She did not like that. Anyway, they put a picc line in and she was to take iv antibiotics multiple times a day for like a month or so. Her case manager and I talked her into going into a nursing facility temporarily until she gets healed up. Well as that was getting set up she decided that she didn't want to be in the hospital anymore and demanded that I come take her home. She even called security and told them she was being held captive in her room. The nurses and I told her that if she leaves now she will likely die because legally they couldn't send her home with the picc line in and couldn't send her home with antibiotics she needs. She even signed a waiver saying that the hospital could not be held liable if she goes home and dies. Well she still insisted she went home. I told her that she needed to stay and let them take care of her because i couldn't do it myself (I work a full time job and we fight all the tine anyways) well I took her home and dropped her off because I was angry with her choices. I left a pack of cigarettes and a few goody powders and told her to make them last because she wasn't going to get them from me anymore, I wasn't going to contribute anymore. The septic shock made her lung start failing, but im sure smoking like a frieght train did not help matters. The next day I checked up on her and she asked if she could have a few cigarettes and I told her no and stood on what I said the day before. I leave because I didn't want to fight. She later messages me and tells me to not come around anymore. Says thus has been a long tine coming. I said "over not buying cigarettes? That's crazy mom." And then I brought up all the years I've supplied everything for her and that she only looked at me as a cash cow. The next day I woke up to a message from her saying that she knows that I don't love her and that I never have and that if she dies somebody would let me know, and then blocked me. So my question is am I just being an asshole and should I give in to her like i always do, or should I just stand my ground and do nothing. Sorry for the long post, me and my mother have a complicated history and there is much more relevant stuff to type, I'm just not trying to write a novel. I'm 32(m) and she is 58, if that matters.

2024.05.29 02:15 Signal-Complex7446 Please Help!

Please help with feedback. If I have mis-posted I apologize. I am searching where to put this.
This is embarrassing. Embarrassment is part of my illness. I am working to overcome. This is an exercise in trust and I feel embarrassed even writing. Lowering my pride:
My brother, six years older, is a psychopath, narcissist, and has Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD).
We have no other siblings.
Well needless to say growing was not right for me to say the least.
I started off very good in 1967. I was an intelligent, handsome and healthy American boy.
Until the day my dad passed in 2023 we had the healthiest fatheson best friend work associate relationship possible. My dad saw my great potential and had great working plans for me which were I always agreed with. He was not there but set me on a path. It was working. He believed in freedom. He served in the US Navy in Korea from 1951-1954. All wartime. He was my hero. RIP dad.
My mom is alive and completely brain washed by my brother, afraid of my brother and afraid of my interaction with my brother. She says I need acceptance. She has never said this until recently. She wants me to have peace and she only knows maybe 1/10 of what he did to me (maybe) and no apparent concept of how it has affected me my entire life. I am in therapy but my sessions are once a week for 1 hour. I am working on doubling this. I like my therapist. I am telling him things I have told a soul in 50 years.
My mom is in denial and feels guilty and at fault. I told her blame is not an option. I do not blame her for anything. It is difficult for me to even hear her voice and she is not getting any younger. Neither am I.
So it is very difficult for me to speak to her about anything. She is living in assisted living facility roughly 20 minutes away. She learned how to gaslight and manipulate me from my brother and doesn't even realize she is doing it. She does not validate my feelings at all. I do not pressure about this. I leave my 86 year old mother to her TV and her new found friends where she is living.
I have been in and out of mental hospitals for years. I have been where I am today remember this shit many times before and have not been at level of peace in 50 years.
A military school would have been ideal for me and preferred. I guess it could not be afforded and my mom didn't want to part with me.
I am taking a different route this time. Facing this daily until I feel I have come to resolutions. My brain is not capable of making decisions right now also my anger does not allow for a lot of fun or free thought. Sometimes this anger freezes up my entire body. I refuse to take meds they damaged my body. No way. Natural or not at all.
I am in the process of reviewing all of my mental heath records (they have been requested) and am planning to sue anyone my dad shelled big bucks to get me right.
I want to have zero contact with my brother. I want to make sure the girl friend / wife of mine he got accused of sexually assaulting is ok.
I want to get in a position where I can help people. There is nothing I cannot solve. I am writing this to accelerate the process of a cure for myself.
I would have been a GREAT surgeon or soldier or defense lawyer instead I am on disability and legally insane. This is okay that I am on a different path than my dad and I planned when was very young. I will turn this negative into a positive and complete my life's work based on my life experience.
There is more to this. I find if the post is too long people may not read it and I need it read. Any feedback would be nice. Please be gentle but real. I am real and this is real.
I want off social security permanent disability (behavioral health). When my mom dies there is a will. There will enough for me to do this. I'm in their final will but my brother is the executor. Fuck special needs trusts. I will not give money a lawyer ever to write one. I don't want assets but I am finding I probably will have to go this route.
I am currently living in a condo with my emotional rescue dog paid in full from my dad's life insurance which he took out in 1964 purchased by mom in her name. I pay all my bills with SSDI payments.
To this day I let my brother and mother ruin my life. My mother not as much. I am getting over her denial, brain washed mind, gaslighting, insults, lack of patience and lack of explaining anything to me my entire life (I called this a non-present neglectful mother previously).
I am coming back ~ stronger than ever. I will not lay down and fully surrender. I may compromise and accept for my sanity. My dad will know I completed my cure when we are reunited in heaven. He couldn't solve this. He was considered a genius. He almost caved close to his death. Its something I must do. I am not getting any younger.
I am blessed with the concept of curing my mental illness and feeling better and more at peace. This new path has become my goal. I am looking at this as possible and attainable with enough time to continue to give back.

2024.05.29 02:06 SOMETIME_THEWOLF_YT A Taylor journey and my attempt to revive a long dead creativity.

A Taylor journey and my attempt to revive a long dead creativity.
My little Taylor Journey and creative resurrection attempt.
Hi guys,
Before I waffle on endlessly, I’ve started a Taylor project aimed at helping me resurrect my long dead creative powers. Long explanation and plan below!
I grew up loving music and went to my first concert at the age of 8. At which point, my life was ruined by my parents as it was clear my path was music but I’d likely never make it.
Fast forward to the teens and I was writing songs every day with ease (good or bad). Then I had a band and we did well for a time until I made the terrible mistake of…getting a full time job. After 10 years of writing and performing, I finally stopped in 2010.
For a long time I felt I was a nothing man as music was my identity and it was no longer. Sad times but we move on.
2021, I met Olivia - my girlfriend/full time Swifty. Not really my bag. I’m more of a Bob Dylan, Springsteen, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, The Doors, Nirvana, Electronica and Madonna kind of guy. So I paid no attention.
Then she put on the long pond studio thing and I listened. Not many songs caught my ear but Mirrorball definitely did. I spoke to Jonny, my old grizzled and grumpy bandmate about it, knowing he’d never listened to a mainstream artist in his miserable life. “I love Taylor!” he said. “I had a feeling about her anyway but when I watched the Disney thing, it forced me to completely re-evaluate her as an artist”. Ok I thought, is she really that special?
I have ADD and OCPD so naturally, my attention switched and I immediately forgot about everything and moved onto a shiny new obsession. But I took Mirrorball with me.
May 2023 Olivia and I very sadly break up and when I hear the likely toll of a breakup caused her to miss signing up for the UK tour dates, I decide to help make sure she gets to see Taylor, no matter where it is. We get her tickets to Stockholm. Not ideal, but good enough.
September 2023 - We are getting back together!
She sells her tickets at face value - as she wants to go with someone who loves Taylor and that’s not me and nobody else will pay to travel 😔.
October 2023 (I think). I am forced to endure a cinema trip to see the Eras film. Yikes. Thoughts on the night below…
Dear god, 3 hours. Hmmm cool opening. The film looks amazing! Why is the crowd sparkling? Cruel Summer is a perfect pop song. Wow those costume changes are seamless! Ok wow (Don’t blame me - Reputation) Isn’t it isn’t it isn’t it isn’t it isn’t it isn’t it isn’t. My tears Ricochet is so clever. She writes the melodies I could never. All too well is long and samey (I changed my mind on this since). Ok I’m going outside to make a quick playlist of the songs I loved so I can play them in the car to Olivia. Back in for the end. Loved Vigilante Shit. Love Midnights. The end.
April 2023 - Olivia wakes up the news that I’ve bought tickets to two Taylor shows (N1 and N3) in Paris - in two weeks time.
May 2023 - I decide if I’m going to watch six hours of this stuff, I need to make myself a playlist of the songs I like and it has to flow perfectly with Spotify premium lending a hand as crossfade used correctly = excitement. 10 songs maybe. Surely I can find ten I love. The finished playlist is in the picture above…
Ok so NOW I GET IT. Her songs are special and so is she. Now I’m excited.
The concerts were amazing. The view - perfect. The people all dressed up - so lovely to see. I wish I wasn’t too shy to dress up!
Post concerts - I’m home. I’m staring at my guitar collection. She’s making me want to create but I can’t. Everything is boring. But what if she can help me….
Ok so hear me out. I was good. That’s a certainty. I’m confident enough to say that. But, my lyrics were always way too cryptic to be relatable and I never wrote chorus’s. In fact I actively avoided them save for one of two occasions. So In the end, my songs felt stale and boring as I steered clear of hooks like an idiot.
So my master plan, is to learn and record every song on Folklore and actively note down and voice note record any melodic or lyrical ideas I have during the process. Then, write a song that fits into that folklore world that is clearly mine - and not a Taylor rip. But it has to be melodic and thematically - suitable for the folklore era.
I asked Jonny to spur me on by doubting me and he said “she writes what she feels and doesn’t disguise it. You can’t do that. If you do, it’s major progress. You also like to talk/sing and change it every time you do the song - she has definite melodies. Do that and you’ll be growing for the first time in decades.”
So, Im fighting off the ADD urge to drop the project half way through and I guess I just wanted to get it all down in writing so it’s a thing. Wish me luck!!
PS I’m sorry this was so long if anybody managed to reach the end :/

2024.05.29 02:06 MantisAwakening Famous Cases: The Scole Experiment

This is going to be the first of a number of posts on famous cases of paranormal phenomenon. Looking at the posts on this subreddit makes it easy to forget some of the real mysteries that have been documented over the decades. We’re going to start with one of my favorites, the Scole Experiment.
The Scole Experiment, conducted from 1993 to 1998 in the village of Scole, Norfolk, England, and is one of the most well-documented and controversial series of séances in the history of paranormal research. Named after its location, the experiment aimed to provide substantial evidence of life after death through physical mediumship (mediumship producing physical phenomenon).
The Scole Experiment was distinctive in its approach, combining traditional séance methods with modern (at the time) recording equipment. The sessions were typically held in a darkened cellar beneath the Foys' house, with participants sitting around a table. The primary goal was to establish communication with spirits and capture physical phenomena that could be rigorously tested and verified.
One of the first types of phenomena reported during the Scole Experiment was the appearance of lights. These lights, described as bright, darting, and often colorful, would move around the room, sometimes responding to requests from participants. The lights were said to exhibit intelligent behavior, changing direction, and interacting with objects and people in the room.
In addition to lights, the experiment also produced numerous instances of “apports,” which are objects that supposedly materialize from thin air. These objects included old coins, gemstones, and even a small crystal. One particularly remarkable instance involved the appearance of a newspaper from 1944, which was said to be in pristine condition despite its age:
Accordingly MK took the paper to the Print Industries Research Association, a world authority on paper and printing, who informed him in due course that their detailed examination of the typeface demonstrated that it had been printed by letterpress, a long-since obsolete technique. Furthermore, their chemical analysis of the paper on which the apport was printed revealed it to be Second World War newsprint, long since unavailable. In his further investigations MK ascertained that the apported version differed from the copy of the Daily Mail for April 1st 1944 kept in the British Library only in that it was an earlier edition of that day's print run.
The apports often seemed to have specific significance or connections to the participants or the spirits they were purportedly in contact with.
Audio phenomena were also a crucial part of the Scole Experiment. Voices were frequently heard, sometimes through direct voice communication where the sounds seemed to emanate from the air rather than from the mediums. These voices would converse with the participants, providing information and answering questions. Additionally, anomalous sounds such as music and unexplained knocking were often reported.
Photographic evidence also played a significant role in the Scole Experiment. The group used both traditional film cameras and infrared video cameras to capture images during the séances. Numerous photographs were developed that appeared to show faces, scenes, and symbolic images. Some of these images were obtained under conditions designed to eliminate the possibility of fraud, such as sealed film canisters that were only opened and developed in the presence of independent witnesses.
One of the most striking aspects of the Scole Experiment was the variety of spirit communication methods employed. These included automatic writing, where spirits were said to control the hand of a medium to produce written messages, and direct writing, where messages appeared on pieces of paper without any apparent physical cause. The group also reported instances of materialized hands that would touch and interact with the participants.
Throughout the duration of the experiment, the Scole Group maintained a detailed log of the sessions, meticulously documenting the phenomena and the conditions under which they occurred. Independent investigators from the SPR, including respected researchers Montague Keen, David Fontana, and Arthur Ellison, attended many of the sessions. These investigators reported witnessing the phenomena firsthand and concluded that the events could not be easily dismissed or explained by conventional means.
One particularly controversial piece of evidence involved the locking of sealed rolls of film in a box which were later developed and shown to contain images exposed across multiple frames, which would only be possible by removing the film from the roll entirely:
Walter describes how he bought a roll of film, put the unopened film in the locked security box, and held the box in his hands throughout the session, neither putting it on the table nor allowing anyone else to touch it. He then supervised the development procedure. Despite the film he purchased being unopened and in a locked box in Walter's hand for the whole session, there was writing along the length of the film in the form a German poem.
Modern-day researcher Brian Dunning asserts that the box was vulnerable to tampering:
One of the investigators, Alan Gauld, wrote critically of how he discovered this locked box could be quickly and easily opened in the dark, which allowed for easy substitution of film rolls. This box was provided by the mediums. Whenever any other sealed container was used, no images ever appeared on the film. Yet even while acknowledging these facts, the authors of the Scole Report still maintain that the film images are most likely evidence of the supernatural.
Source: https://skeptoid.com/episodes/4179
However, Dunning leaves out additional information which complicates matters:
Just over three years later he came from Germany to the Scole Study Day to give an eloquent and concise (under-five-minute) account of the exact design of the box (he is a leading engineer) and the exact way in which he had held it during the experiment: three fingers pressed against one side; his thumb against another; his index finger on the top face; his palm covering the lock; the base resting firmly on the table. Only the side facing away from him (the base excepted) was uncovered by any part of his hand, and this side was slotted into the box from above and could not be removed without first dismantling the box from the top.
Source: https://www.thescoleexperiment.com/rosalind-oliver-the-scole-experiments-an-overview.html
Despite the extensive documentation and the involvement of reputable researchers, the Scole Experiment has faced significant criticism and skepticism. Critics argue that the conditions of the séances, particularly the dark environment, were conducive to trickery and sleight of hand. They suggest that the phenomena could have been produced by the participants themselves, either intentionally or unconsciously, through techniques commonly used by stage magicians—although throughout the thorough investigations no one was ever able to prove any such trickery actually occurred.
This case can’t be summed up in a single documentary or debunking. I encourage anyone who is interested to read the full report and consider the great lengths that investigators went to in order to try and determine the true cause. Uptimately, the ambiguous nature of parapsychological phenomenon means that what one ultimately chooses to believe about the case is going to come down to a matter of faith, not facts.

2024.05.29 02:04 NinTylo Thousand-Year Door Remake: GAME OF THE YEAR for me (so far). Definitely deserves "Best Family Game" at the Game Awards at the end of this year too at the very least, if not JRPG (if FF7 Rebirth takes the latter that is).

Thousand-Year Door Remake: GAME OF THE YEAR for me (so far). Definitely deserves
https://preview.redd.it/yar6tv69293d1.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d7a603876f8be4a5f22ee5313f60484353381c1
I started it the very moment it was playable, and I completed the whole thing 100% in 4 days top! The most personalized time of my life in a long while (no one else was allowed to interfere with my time reliving it all).
As for my thoughts? Bad stuff first:
  • Some of this game's backtracking can still get slightly annoying at times (albeit much more forgiving compared to the OG).
  • Chapter 2 remains the worst with little to no improvements made on it and is only worth playing for its bosses and puzzles, much less its beautiful, half-decent music. (Is a frustrating disaster worth rage-quitting? Nah, far from it I'll admit. Is it the weakest chapter? Absolutely no question!)
  • Even despite the annoyances of chasing General White in Chapter 7's first half, and getting the letter "p" for guessing Doopliss' name to expose and eliminate his invincibility in Chapter 4's second half, having a big warp room for each Chapter area and a pipe to travel faster back to Twilight Town from Creepy Steeple after acquiring Vivian (and if I may add, you can actually SKIP guessing Doopliss' name after fleeing from him once) respectively make both halves of their respective chapters more forgiving and far less annoying than they were nearly two decades ago; LESS! (Great chapters that are better than they were originally I will say, but backtracking can still get tiresome at times)
  • Yes, the forced loss tropes within the Iron Adonis Twins, Doopliss in his fake Mario disguise, and the Shadow Queen's first phase (for those of us who clearly remember THOSE times in our youth), still grind on me since, let's face it; forced loss battles/failures are some of the worst video game cliches ever, but Yoshi's Gulp, guessing Doopliss' name correctly, and the Crystal Stars being used AGAINST the Shadow Queen admittedly wash that sour taste out of my mouth.
  • Among the game's bosses, the post-game Whacka boss fight going into the Pit of 100 Trails' 100th floor a second time is rather stupid and forgettable (and for a "Surprise" Boss is hot garbage), especially compared to Prince Mush and Bonetail, who have FAR more interesting lore and special attacks/moves.
The good stuff? Pretty much everything else!
  • Better graphics.
  • Fantastic remixes and newly introduced themes (with maybe a few exceptions, but still welcome editions nonetheless).
  • Bonus coin rewards against the many bosses, and every Pit of 100 Trail level.
  • Prince Mush a welcome edition for an optional boss (than that stupid out-of-place Whacka ever will be).
And lots more to name. If anything would be nice, they could add Luigi's own DLC of his adventure of the Waffle Kingdom he describes to Mario; even if I have to pay for it, I'm up for Luigi's side of the story. All things aside, still a classic among my Top Fifteen Favorite Games of All Time, and for the acclaim this remake is earning on the horizon, I'd theorize it will make Nintendo more money than a year (Keywords ONE YEAR) of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe revenue, and on behalf of developer Intelligent Systems, it could potentially outsell Fire Emblem: Three Houses in sales numbers.

2024.05.29 01:59 SillyDecoraKeiHyena Type me please !

Well i've already been typed as infp 6w7 but I've recently been pondering whether it's really something that fits me so I wanted to get other people's opinions on my typing.
• How old are you? What's your gender? Give us a general description of yourself.
— I'm 19 years old and identify as non-binary (he/they pronouns). I am extremely extra, I am eccentric, I love alternative styles, I love arts in all its forms, I am extremely sentimental, I can be considered strange to many, I talk too much, I seem extroverted around introverts and I seem introverted around other extroverts, I get tired easily in social situations, so I always prefer to talk more via cell phone or computer. I'm very extreme and I can end up feeling very angry, very happy or very sad out of nowhere, I usually try to be kind but I can be rude or insensitive if I'm very angry, I'm a person who really likes to fight for causes aimed at minorities since I'm from several minority groups, I hate injustice, I'm very stubborn and I don't like being contradicted while I always try to be someone who takes various arguments into account.
• Is there a medical diagnosis that may impact your mental stability somehow?
— I'm autistic, adhd, i have gad (generalized anxiety disorder) and i might also have depression.
• Describe your upbringing. Did it have any kind of religious or structured influence? How did you respond to it?
— I grew up in a Christian family, which hurt me a lot when I got older since my family's religion is against my existence as a queer person, and it took them a long time to admit that I needed psychological help and things like that. It's difficult to leave my roots but in the end I ended up stopping believing in my parents' religion after everything I went through.
• What do you do as a job or as a career (if you have one)? Do you like it? Why or why not?
— I'm studying animation design at college, it's one of my passions and I really enjoy learning about the topics, I just hate the structure of taking exams and tests.
• If you had to spend an entire weekend by yourself, how would you feel? Would you feel lonely or refreshed?
— I would feel crazy, insane. I need the company of some people close to me to regulate myself and talk about things I like, being alone makes me feel empty and strange. So yeah i would feel lonely.
• What kinds of activities do you prefer? Do you like, and are you good at sports? Do you enjoy any other outdoor or indoor activities?
— I'm terrible at sports and I hate them, my motor coordination is horrible. I prefer indoor activities because there is less chance of me overloading myself with something (example: feeling unwell because of the sun, heat, etc.)
• How curious are you? Do you have more ideas then you can execute? What are your curiosities about? What are your ideas about - is it environmental or conceptual, and can you please elaborate?
— I'm very curious, I love discovering new things, I have a lot of ideas at terrible times (in the middle of the night) and I really end up getting disorganized with the amount of things I think about. My ideas and curiosity are generally focused on creative processes like creating characters, universes, stories, but it can also simply be focused on a topic of interest to me (hyperfocuses / special interests). These are things that end up being more of a concept because I'm terrible at executing my ideas.
• Would you enjoy taking on a leadership position? Do you think you would be good at it? What would your leadership style be?
— I don't like being the leader of projects and things like that for the simple fact that I'm not good at handling responsibilities, so I prefer to just execute some order, my problem is that I also really like doing things MY way so it's a bit contradictory. However, in the moments when I have had to be a leader (I was forced to since my colleagues didn't want to do anything) I haven't been a bad leader, I research the project topics and let people choose their topics to present.
• Are you coordinated? Why do you feel as if you are or are not? Do you enjoy working with your hands in some form? Describe your activity?
— I'm not good at being organized or at things that involve motor coordination. For example, it took me decades to be able to tie my shoe laces, know which direction is right or left and I keep forgetting important dates. I don't like using my hands to do activities because they shake a lot and so I'm always horrible at things that involve using my hands. The only things I think I'm good at are playing games and drawing, and even then, drawing is an extreme challenge since I always put a lot of pressure on the pencil when I'm drawing or writing.
• Are you artistic? If yes, describe your art? If you are not particular artistic but can appreciate art please likewise describe what forums of art you enjoy. Please explain your answer.
— Yes, art is something that I have loved since I was young because of the fact that I can express my creativity, ideas and feelings. I've always been passionate about cartoons so my drawing style is very cartoony. I really like seeing fanart from media that I love, but I also love seeing old paintings, especially from Roman and Greek times. I not only like drawing and painting, but I also love art in general. I love cinema, theater, books, sculptures, etc. One day I want to know how to write very well and be able to make books or even draw well enough to be able to make a cartoon. I want to be able to share the comfort I experience by seeing art that makes me feel happy and represented by doing something that also makes people happy through my art.
• What's your opinion about the past, present, and future? How do you deal with them?
— I have some regrets from the past, but in general I was more "normal" and happy back then, I wouldn't change anything because I follow the idea that my mistakes and successes made me who I am today. As for my present, I try to make the most of it but I'm not going to lie that I'm not a big fan of my current state, I feel a bit useless and very behind compared to most people I know my age so I end up preferring to think more about the future and how things will get better later. At the same time that I really appreciate some current moments of my present, like being able to play with my girlfriend most days, this makes me very happy.
• How do you act when others request your help to do something (anything)? If you would decide to help them, why would you do so?
— I like helping people, sometimes I even try to help people who didn't ask for my help if they are people I really like (I may end up being seen as inconvenient because of this). I always want to be able to help everyone, but currently because of my mood I may end up not being very helpful as my mental health is not the best, even so, I always try to be very patient and friendly with people who are going through difficult times, even when sometimes I just want to be left alone and I'm not in the mood to help anyone, especially because I know what it's like to be in a bad place and i don't want people to feel rejected.
• Do you need logical consistency in your life?
— I'm very sentimental and I often don't think very logically BUT in arguments and other serious situations I need people to use logic and proven arguments just like i do in those situations so that the debate or serious situation isn't just a bunch of nonsense. I am a sentimental person, but to develop some thought, I need logical arguments
• How important is efficiency and productivity to you?
— In general, I think it's very important, but I personally can't be productive and efficient since I have a lot of executive dysfunction. I KNOW it's important but I can't be like that.
• Do you control others, even if indirectly? How and why do you do that?
— I like things to be my way but I don't really think I control people? I always impose my opinions a lot but I don't really control people.
• What are your hobbies? Why do you like them?
— I like games, reading books, role-playing, drawing and even trying to write books. I really like fantasy things. It seems more fun than my reality and I like to distract myself from real life things.
• What is your learning style? What kind of learning environments do you struggle with most? Why do you like/struggle with these learning styles? Do you prefer classes involving memorization, logic, creativity, or your physical senses?
— I like learning things when they involve what I like or at least are more interactive and I hate math, chemistry and physics btw. I have a lot of difficulty with classes in subjects that require a lot of memorization, I prefer things that are relative and interpretative like arts and literature and I really like classes that involve creativity. I also hate classes where the teacher just talks and talks and talks and doesn't do anything interactive and fun. I generally prefer to study at home for very short periods of time because I learn easier alone and study very briefly because I have difficulty studying for long periods of time.
• How good are you at strategizing? Do you easily break up projects into manageable tasks? Or do you have a tendency to wing projects and improvise as you go?
— I'm terrible at planning things, I usually do things at the last minute and I improvise a lot.
• What are your aspirations in life, professionally and personally?
— I think I get a lot of inspiration from artists I like, such as Rebecca Sugar, Tyler Joseph and others. They are very creative people who do things that I really like (I love Steven Universe, which Rebecca Sugar created, and I love Twenty One Pilots, which is the band where Tyler Joseph is the lead singer).
• What are your fears? What makes you uncomfortable? What do you hate? Why?
— My biggest fears are being alone, because it's scary not having anyone who understands you and who supports you and loves you, and being a burden to the people I love, because I don't want to be an extremely dependent and useless person and disappoint the people I love.
• What do the "highs" in your life look like?
— These are the days when I feel excited to do things and I can be productive doing everything I need in my routine as well as doing my hobbies and being able to relax.
• What do the "lows" in your life look like?
— These are the days when I feel sad, empty and discouraged, I can't do my routine tasks and I force myself to do them anyway in an extremely bad mood, my hobbies may even distract me on those days but it will be a strange feeling as if I'm not really excited to do what I like and I'm just distracting myself from my problems.
• How attached are you to reality? Do you daydream often, or do you pay attention to what's around you? If you do daydream, are you aware of your surroundings while you do so?
— Ah, I don't have much attachment to reality and I prefer fantasy things, I constantly get caught up in my own thoughts and I prefer to create happy fantasy situations so I don't deal with my real problems. I'm also pretty distracted in general so regardless of whether I'm fantasizing or not I end up missing a lot of details and dissociating
• Imagine you are alone in a blank, empty room. There is nothing for you to do and no one to talk to. What do you think about?
— I would probably try to distract myself by thinking about things I like or talking to myself, depending on if the day was bad I would eventually end up thinking a lot about my personal problems and becoming depressed.
• How long do you take to make an important decision? And do you change your mind once you've made it?
— I'm very slow and indecisive when it comes to choosing things, I always want to gather as much information about each option in my mind or by researching on the internet about it and then I always end up between multiple options and changing my mind several times until I arrive at a concrete result.
• How long do you take to process your emotions? How important are emotions in your life?
— Some of my emotions may be processed much later than they should have been processed or simply be different from what people usually have. For example, I'm not very good at dealing with grief and I end up not showing the sadness that my other relatives do, but generally I feel my emotions in a very extreme and volatile way. I feel happy for very silly things and when I'm happy I'm VERY HAPPY and I get sad very easily and when I get sad I get VERY SAD.
• Do you ever catch yourself agreeing with others just to appease them and keep the conversation going? How often? Why?
— Yes. I really like demonstrating my opinions and being authentic, it's a very important thing for me, but even so, I sometimes end up just remaining silent or agreeing with something that I don't really agree with because I'm too afraid of being hated and I generally want everyone to like me, even people I'm not very close to. However, I can also be a person with very strong opinions and be very stubborn about what I believe in if it is something linked to social issues or linked to things that I REALLY like.
• Do you break rules often? Do you think authority should be challenged, or that they know better? If you do break rules, why?
— I break rules that I believe don't make sense, if it's something that I think makes sense I'll follow that rule, but if it's stupid and I don't understand why I have to follow it I'll probably break the rule. I've also never been a person who understands authorities, for me anyone has the right to question something if it's not a useful or logical rule. I agree that rules are important but that they can be adapted, eliminated and added if necessary for people.

2024.05.29 01:58 robotwithatinyneck Advice on how to make best of internship at appellate court?

Hey everyone, I’m entering my final year of school and am interning at a state appellate court for the next six weeks. Any advice on how to best make a good impression? Should I pester anyone for projects or do anything to standout so I can more easily secure post-grad job opportunities or letters of recommendation? This feels like the most impressive opportunity I’ve come across so far and I don’t want to waste what could come of it. I’m interested in government work, appellate law, and civil defense litigation. Any ideas are appreciated.
