[0 YoE] New Structural Engineering Grad Seeking Entry-Level Opportunities
I've been actively applying for positions but haven't had much success in securing interviews or offers. I would appreciate it if some of you took a look at my resume and provided constructive feedback.
I've tailored my resume to highlight my academic achievements and any hands-on projects or internships I've completed. Despite my efforts, I'm unsure if there are specific areas where I'm falling short, or if there's a way to better present my skills and experience to catch the attention of potential employers.
Any advice on formatting, content, or anything else that could improve my chances would be immensely helpful. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance!

2024.05.19 00:35 Ok-Coast-3526 Enlist first or Join SMP first

Hello, I am new to Army reserve, no one has served in force before in our family. My son currently senior in HS. Want to join SMP program. I need some guidance. He will be joining His college in January 2025 as spring admission. He contacted his Army reserve recuriter, he said since he has six months he can finish his BCT and AIT before January 2025 and go to college and Join ROTC . Apply for minuteman scholarship for 4 years. Here is my concern, Deployment in between RIT and start of ROTC. This will mess up his college education ( he is brilliant student, admitted in top tier university) 1. Can army reserve recruiter sign him up as SMP ? So before he finish his training, he is secured. 2. If he has to wait to sign up for ROTC ( contracted from freshman) , can he be deployed in between time where he is waiting to start college ( probably around month and half ) 3 . Should he NOT enlist at the moment and wait till start of college ?
So much confusion. If any one can guide

2024.05.19 00:28 Feeling_Drive_5488 Submitted FAFSA late, how screwed is my aid?

2023-24 I got the New American Scholarship, Federal Pell Grant, and the Arizona Promise.
I submitted my FAFSA late this year and the only one showing up on my account is the New American Scholarship. I'm gonna go to the financial office on Monday to ask and see, but are there any options for me to get more aid aside from just submitting applications to scholarships?

2024.05.19 00:06 kursor_ Mac Health Sci or Western Med Sci with 70k Scholarship?

I want to begin by saying that I recognize that I am extremely lucky to have the opportunity and freedom to make this decision. Definitely don't want to come off as boastful and am genuinely looking for advice.
I applied to Western's National Scholarship program and ended up receiving the 70k President's Entrance Scholarship (1 of 1) as well as Scholar's Electives. I also received an offer to Mac Health Sci last week. I know a huge part of this decision comes down to my future goals which so far have been getting into medical school and pursuing medicine.
I know that Mac Health Sci is notoriously a "feeder" program with its high matriculate rate into med, but I was wondering if the program itself still outweighs the opportunities that Western is providing. I've included my thoughts about each program below:
Mac Health Sci
Western Med Sci
I've visited both campuses and liked the feel at both so that isn't too much of a factor for me. The opportunities in London vs. Hamilton also seem pretty comparable. Health Sci sounds amazing and the only thing that really concerns me is the untraditional learning style and if I am one of the few it doesn't click for. I do not want the next 4 years of my life to always be nose to the grindstone and the balance seems significantly better at Mac than Western, but I also recognize that Mac is not a guaranteed ticket to med school and it truly depends on the person, not the program.
If anyone could provide their two cents, I would greatly appreciate it :)

2024.05.18 22:29 trefolialate Five arguments for Christian theism, plus a critique of the "New Atheism"

New atheist tomes tend to lack intellectual muscles. They tend to focus in on societal problems with religion, but, as Russell pointed out in his "Why I am not a Christian" one may justifiably doubt that societal effects have an impact on a hypothesises truth. For example, Darwinism gave rise to unpleasant movements, like Sanger's eugenics movement in the US or campaigns to sterlise those with physical impairments, but that's no reason to ignore the evidence in evolution's favour, and reject evolution tout court.
Further, the New Atheist books show a heavy leaning to logical positivism, rejecting anything that is not capable in principle of being demonstrated empirically. So they reject out of hand claims about the historicity of Jesus, or the predictions of the Old Testament.
The collapse of positivism has inspired a renaissance in Christian apologetics. Here are five arguments for Christian belief.
  1. God is the best explanation of why the universe exists
Many atheists have asserted that "the universe is just there, and that's all" in the words of Bertrand Russell. But can this really be the case? Mathematicians have long recognised the self-evident physical absurdities involved in trying to apply infinities in the real world. What is infinity minus infinity? Well, in maths, such equations produce contradictory answers and are therefore left undefined: they cannot produce consistent results. But could such a convention ever hold sway in the real world?
Moreover, good physical evidence points to a beginning of the cosmos. The standard model implies the universe gradually getting smaller, until there is zero distance between everything. Theoretically prior to that, nothing exists, as shown on a standard graph such as on this website: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Bang.
Now, this puts an atheist in an awkward position. For, if he is a naturalist, he must believe the universe "came from nothing... and by nothing" to quote p.121 of "The Cambridge companion to atheism". But, in everyday reasoning, everything is assumed to have a cause. To quote Kai Nelson, on p.66 of his "Logic and Action" "suppose you were to hear a small bang, and you were to ask... what caused that explosion, and I said 'nothing, it just happened... you would not accept that explanation, indeed, you would find my answer quite incomprehensible." But, what goes for a little bang must go for the Big one too. Thus, we arrive at a cause of the universe. To summarise:
  1. whatever begins to exist has a cause
  2. the universe began to exist
  3. therefore, the universe has a cause
This supernatural cause must be beginningless, and therefore by the light of the first premise uncaused. It must be (sans the universe) unchanging, enormously powerful, and personal, as only a personal mind could fit such a description. And thus one arrives not at any super anodyne cause of the universe, but to its personal Creator.
  1. God makes sense of the fine-tuning of the universe for life
Numerous physicists, eg., Villenkin with the weak atomic force, estimated as fine-tuned in the order of at least 1/100,000 to the power ten, and the cosmological constant, estimated by Penrose as fine-tuned somewhere in the order of one in ten to the negative one hundredth power to the negative twentieth power, have shown certain parameters in the observed universe which allow for life to exist. Even their ratios are fine-tuned, so improbability is multiplied out until the mind is left reeling. What explains these parameters? Given the myriad problems with entropy that trouble multiverse models, as well as the specific complexity of the parameters, and the fact no law fine-tunes these constants and quantities, design seems a superior hypothesis for the remarkable fine-tuning. To summarise:
  1. the fine-tuning of the universe is due to either law, chance, or design
  2. it is not due to law, nor to chance
  3. therefore, the fine-tuning is due to design
  4. God is the best explanation of our moral experience
If God does not exist, objective morality does not exist. By objective, one means that such moral values are real and binding independently of anyone's opinion. Many atheist philosophers, from Nietzsche to Russell, agree that in the absence of a God, morals would not be binding in this way. So, an action like child abuse might be described as unpopular, or disadvantageous, but cannot be described as wrong. However, clearly we know certain things are wrong, even if we lack belief in God. Thus, if morality cannot be objective without God, and morality is objective, it follows logically and necessarily that therefore, God exists. To sum up:
  1. If God does not exist, then no objective moral values and duties exist
  2. some objective moral values and duties do exist
  3. therefore, God exists
  4. God is the best explanation for the applicability of mathematics to the physical world
If maths is a purely formal activity, why does it apply to the world? The unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics that concerned Eugene Wigner is puzzling. How can a mathematician pore over numbers that years later lead to the discovery of the Higg's boson?
Naturalism cannot provide a satisfactory answer here, whereas theists can say "God made the Universe according to the plan he had in mind". Thus theism has better explanatory value here than atheism.
  1. God provides the best explanation of the historical data concerning Jesus of Nazareth
According to Gerd Lüdemann's 1991 study of NT scholarship, three facts exist about Jesus:
  1. the empty tomb
  2. his post-mortem appearances to both friend and sceptic and enemy alike
  3. the decision of his apostles to do something fundamentally unjewish and believe in a risen messiah.
I can think of no better explanation of these facts than the one the original disciples gave: that Jesus rose from the dead in a miracle. But, if Jesus did rise from the dead, then that is a miracle that supports his claims (see the earliest traditions of the Gospels). Thus one may argue
  1. there are three facts about Jesus: his empty tomb, his post-mortem appearances, and the conversion of the apostles, that require an explanation
  2. the explanation that is most propitious is that the God revealed by Jesus raised Jesus from the dead
  3. the statement "the God revealed by Jesus raised Jesus from the dead" entails that God exists
  4. therefore, God exists

2024.05.18 22:21 alzokryne Should you accept a job offer because it's your only one?

I'm a 23 year old guy. I come from a background of just not really knowing myself. This is just for a little context. Some of us unfortunately had to deal with toxic households. And as a result maybe contributed to depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts. Cool. So years go by of just planning your escape while also trying to finish school and not off yourself. During high school I admired artists, animators, musicians, etc. I was brainstorming ideas of being in that world. I would watch these animation student thesis films on YouTube. These things were great to admire but I never felt such a strong interest or connection to participate. I was writing my own stories. I thought maybe I would want to write for comics or animation or even live action TV/Film. I applied to Ringling College of Art & Design as well as New Hampshire Institute of Art. I got accepted to both but I decided to just go to community college because while I had some scholarship, both were still a lot of money. And I really stopped having an interest to participate in writing as years went by. I want to keep this post more so focused on the job part so I'm going to leave out info that might raise questions but oh well. I finished high school and started college Fall 2019. Then the pandemic came so I left college. Then I was trying to figure out how to be productive. I really did not have an interest in school. To be fair I did not have much of an interest in life. I only stayed alive due to my belief. So I decided to just work, make some money and figure it out. I wanted to save for when I finally move out and progress in life. Didn't end up happening. I actually did end up going back to school. I didn't care about any of the majors I just did business for my associates and communications for bachelors. It was online but they also had a center downtown for students to do work. So I went there everyday in the summer of 2023 to graduate faster and be done with school one and for all. And I did. November 2023 I graduated with my BA in communications. In September 2023 that's when I was finished with school, the ceremony was just in November. So since September I was job searching. I was working with the career counselor they offer. She helped me with my resume, cover letter and showing me useful sites. I wasn't getting any jobs. I applied A LOT EVERY DAY. A few interviews. A lot of scam offers. I never really had a focus or a career I always wanted to do. So I applied to anything. But I had some ideas kind of. And I knew what I would not do. February I got an offer from this place that does job coaching for high school students. The salary was 55k. Now that sounds like something I would definitely not be interested in. Just not my thing. But also, I had no other offers. And especially none with that starting salary which I saw was okay I guess for entry level out of college. So I had no choice but to take it. It had been five months. I'm 23. I need money. I'm trying to save. So I did. And so far I caught on very quickly. There were a few bumps on the road but that's life. After a few months I can confidently say that this job is definitely not the one for me. It's a hybrid which was nice but sometimes they have you on your remote days going other places and to me that was a little annoying. They introduced a new in-office things twice a month on Mondays so that took away two of my remote days that were guaranteed lol. I would prefer to be more independent and remote. But I think I can do another hybrid, probably. Just not at a school. Also the school things isn't so bad. Yes some of the kids were annoying. It's just not my vibe. I'm not interested in working at schools. I'm not interested in interacting with students. And I'm just so lost in the meetings. I'm like "Why am I here? I have no idea what they are talking about and I do not care." I feel like such a phony. Such a fake. I don't know how I was hired. I must have been a great actor in the interviews. They even had a written activity I had to do. I must have a way with words. And the vice president of the company keeps telling me how happy she is that she hired me and I am here at the organization. I think that's so hilarious and sad lol. I reached out to my college career counselor again and we started trying to find things. We looked at different careers and I saw technical writing and copywriting. I started applying to those and haven't seen anything yet. But also I'm not after a specific job. I just want to not work with students and be more independent. That's why I mentioned remote work. So I'm still applying I never really stopped that job search process. Even when I accepted the job I have I was still searching. I just thought after college I would have a decent job I could stay at and FINALLY move out and be ok. Decent. Just ok. That's all. I already have absolutely no guidance, no help. But yeah I have sent out more applications for other jobs. I kind of feel done with the job I'm at now. I just don't want to be here. But I know I can't leave unless I get an offer from somewhere else. It's just I don't know why I'm worried I won't. I just want to be able to move out and support myself and stay at a place I feel like I can stay and I don't have to plot to quit.

2024.05.18 21:57 bnnnnnblue Need help with uni decision

First time posting, so forgive me if I'm missing anything. So... as the title suggests, I hope I can get some unbiased suggestions on which uni I should go to.
I have been agonizing over this problem for over a month now and all my friends and teachers are giving different opinions. My parents also don't particularly care abt where I go to and they dont rly have a preference. There are only 2 weeks left to choose!!!!!! HELP!
Background info: I am a 101 applicant. I am very sure that I'm a STEM kid (never been very good at English/history in high school) but I don't rly know what I like either. I have done AP calc BC, stats and CSA. I think I'm good at math and science in general, but I also don't really like or dislike them either.
Programs: I got acceptances from Mcmaster eng/cs coop, Waterloo coop cs/cfm, and UofT cs/eng sci, and I am having a very hard choice between uw cs and ut eng sci.
Given that I am still not sure about my passion, I am worried if I go to uw cs I would have a limited(?) pathway if I find out later on that I don't like programming. On the other hand, at ut eng sci I can choose the specific field in third year or transfer down to basically anywhere in ut STEM.
Friends: All my math friends are going to waterloo either for cs or se, and I know if I am to go to waterloo I will probably rent with them in first year. However, I have another friend a year higher than me in ut eng sci so I can get help from them if I go there.
Environment: I have visited both campuses and both are ok to me.
coop vs PEY: I have heard that waterloo coop give better oppourtunities than ut PEY program, is this true? And with all the AI developments how hard is it to actually find coop job in first year? (I'm worried abt not able to find coop @ uw). Also, to those who went to waterloo, would you say 5 years without a long summer break is managable? (how busy is work?)
Graduate/job : I know both have their merits. From what I heard, uw coop good for finding jobs and ut has research for graduate school, any opinions?
Grades: how's the GPA in both schools? I heard they are kinda low bad for graduate school?
Money: uw tuition a bit higher but they have coop. ut residence is so expensive tho if I go uw I can rent with friends == cheeper. Ut give me 16k scholarship + grant and uw 21k. But money is not the priority.
Course diffuculty/freedom: uw cs has 5 courses per term, ut eng sci has 6. My friend told me that eng sci course is harder (even their cs in first year?)??? How true is that. Also, given that uw cs has way more electives it should be easier since I can choose music studio for the two humanities electives. UT has 1 elective in first 2 years.
AP credits: @ cs I can transfer 3 courses worth of AP credits to fulfill either 2 social science + 1 pure science or 3 pure science + depth requirements. eng sci don't take any.
So....given all info above, what would you say? And could you please answer some questions I asked?
Thank You!! :)

2024.05.18 20:43 flashy_butterfly94 Need a mentor who can help me through the application process🙂

So I am an international student who is taking her second gap year. In my second gap year, I want to learn how to best self-present myself, and as I am an international who will need a full-ride scholarship, the process is a bit more challenging for me without a mentor. Since I am a low-income, first-generation college student, I could not afford the help of paid mentorships, and this year, for this reason, I would be really glad if any of you who got accepted to top universities with full-ride scholarships could help me through the journey with your mentoring.
I have several achievements, and currently I run my non-profit organization and have received grant funding as well. I also have summer camp experience with some international programs. This year, I will be doing Pioneer Academics and Blast AI summer camps with full scholarships.
I applied to colleges for over 2 years now and got several waitlists. I do have experience applying, and I think I should learn how to present myself in the best way.
I need someone with whom I can discuss and share my plans and ideas for this application cycle, and who can potentially help me with making my college list and writing my essays. As a low-income, first generation student, I would really appreciate your help, and I am ready to work to my fullest potential and definitely pay off your hard work and genuine help in the coming future. If you are someone who you think might help, please let me know, and I am ready to share more information about my background and all the other information.

2024.05.18 19:46 Creepy_Ad9937 BITS ADMISSION [IMPORTANT]

Notice: Important Information for BITS Design Mumbai Applicants
If you have already been shortlisted and admitted to BITS Design Mumbai, or are considering applying in the second round, please read this and share.
Scholarships:
I have reviewed BITS' website and their scholarship criteria and percentage waivers. Here are the key points:
Merit & Means Based Scholarship:
Academic Merit Scholarship:
However, it appears that students have only been receiving 75% and 50% scholarships. This suggests that BITS may not be prioritizing applicants with lower family incomes for the 90% scholarship. Alternatively, they may be ranking such applicants lower to avoid awarding the highest waivers.
This could explain why BITS is conducting a second round of admissions and keeping some students waitlisted. I have observed that many candidates with good exam scores, portfolios, and interview performances are still waitlisted, possibly because their family income is lower. Meanwhile, candidates with average scores and portfolios have been admitted.
Note: If you are reading this and come from a wealthy background, please consider the financial challenges faced by other applicants.
Thank you.

Beluga

2024.05.18 18:21 bbyguillotine confused creative

I just have no idea what to do. I'm almost 30, no real interests, but eager for a purpose. I am scared shitless of driving because I've been hit by a car and been in several accidents. The positions I've held have been retail or food related because that was what was accessible walking. I was a social media manager for a while but for a largely nsfw clientele, and for my client's security I deleted all of my portfolio when I stopped servicing. I recently was the Visual Merchandising Manager at a seasonal halloween store and I enjoyed that but similar roles at other stores haven't replied to my applications. I am very organized, a fast learner, and pour my all into what I do, no matter what it is. Here are photos of my resume and some skills.
my daily life looks like: wake up at 5am, make breakfast and lunch for my boyfriend, then while he's at work I clean the house, do yoga, scroll on job board sites, tweak my resume and cover letter to fit a few job listings that are new that day, meditate, panic, make dinner, maybe video games or anime, sleep, repeat.
I will take any advice on my resumé, job fields, scholarships for learning skills that will help me be applicable for remote work, mentorship, job offers (hehe) anything. thank you in advance.

Reese McGee Memorial Scholarship for students with Epilepsy
Hello all 💜
My little brother, Reese, passed away due to SUDEP on April 28, 2024. He was only 22. He was actively pursuing his degree at a local technical college in computer science at the time of his passing, and was very passionate about his education. I know epilepsy presented a unique set of challenges and barriers to him while he pursued his education.
In his honor, I have set up a memorial scholarship for students diagnosed with epilepsy, and it is now open for applicants. I hope it’s okay for me to share here.
My hope is to award this scholarship on an annual basis on my brother’s birthday.

2024.05.18 17:03 bottom-banana Help on Deutschlandstipendium Bewerbung

First post! I'm working on a scholarship app right now with a very tight schedule and I'm trying to get everything gathered up and submitted. There's one section of the application that I don't understand, right at the very end. It's the part where I'm supposed to upload all of my documents. The heading I don't understand is: Vollständige Leistungsübersicht. There are three spaces for documents here. For context, there are already sections for Lebenslauf, Motivation letter, Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, etc. and several spaces for me to upload further study and work certificates, so I don't understand what else they're wanting. Thank you in advance and I hope you have a good one!

2024.05.18 15:15 como365 Republican infighting marked 2024 legislative session

JEFFERSON CITY — The 2024 legislative session that ended Friday seemed more a referendum on Republican Party loyalty than a collective venture toward policy.
Constant infighting among Republicans over priorities and which ones were truly conservative led to days-long filibusters, name calling and the death of many conservative bills, including a top party priority: making it more difficult to amend the Missouri Constitution.
The divisions were so ingrained that the Senate Democrats, holding 10 seats in a 34-person body, delivered the deciding votes on some of the session's most important bills.
The hard-right Freedom Caucus has said their issue with mainstream Republican leaders in the legislature is a lack of dedication to “big red” policies like reducing personal property tax and preventing foreign countries from owning Missouri land.
Looking back at previous sessions, that argument doesn’t quite stack up. In the last several years Republicans have passed one of the nation's most strict abortion bans, limitations on transgender health care and enacted several income tax cuts.
The Freedom Caucus went to great lengths to disrupt Senate procedure and strong-arm leadership in an effort to pass their highest priority, changes to the initiative petition process. The impact was that they were tossed off Senate committees by the Republican leadership and later in the session failed to convince their Republican colleagues to embrace their priorities.
Less than two weeks before the constitutional deadline for the budget and with an important federal health care reimbursement that creates over $4 billion in revenue, Freedom Caucus members filibustered for 41 hours with the demand that leadership first bring up a resolution changing the approval threshold for state constitutional amendments.
Going into the last week of session, initiative petition reform still had not passed.
This week, the Freedom Caucus supported a motion among Republicans to end the Democratic filibuster on the issue through an extraordinary motion — the previous question — that hasn’t been used in the Senate since 2020. But only 16 Republicans would support that plan, which needed 18 votes, so it was never brought before the floor.
With that failure on Wednesday, the resolution was sent back to the House, which refused to budge on Thursday and sent it back to the Senate. On Friday the Senate adjourned without any further action and the effort died.
The failure to pass the resolution making initiative petition changes showed the inability of even a supermajority to act when splintered on such chaotic, disruptive lines.
Senate President Pro Tem. Caleb Rowden, R-Columbia, said that this session showed that more can get done through compromise than confrontation.
"I'm walking out of here as a guy that has basically accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish and I did it in a way that was respectful and collegial," Rowden said in a press conference after adjournment.
Senate Minority Leader John Rizzo, R-Independence, backed up that point saying, "I don't think Democrats won or Republicans lost (the session), I think decorum won."
Fiscal Year 2025 budget
A set of constitutionally mandated bills that fund the state's operations passed just three hours before the May 10 deadline. The final budget is $51.7 billion, $1 billion less than what the governor proposed, and about $2 billion less than last year's budget.
Three things stuck out in this year's budget: Infrastructure continued to be a major focus, spending was reduced to come in line with revenue projects and numerous members on both sides of the aisle were frustrated by the lack of transparency in the process.
Over the last two years, about $3.5 billion has been put into widening I-70 to six lanes statewide and I-44 in the southwestern part of the state. Both projects are about equally funded through debt and general revenue. The budget that was approved is expected to reduce the state surplus to about $1.5 billion.
Up-to-date numbers from the Office of Administration show a more rosy revenue picture than anticipated. So far Fiscal Year 2024 revenue receipts are up 2.7% year over year. That's far higher than the projected .2% growth in revenue used to craft the budget. If that revenue continues at the same pace and with a current general fund balance of over $4 billion there is a chance the state's surplus will hardly be tapped over the next year.
The declining budget also represents a return to normal state budgeting. Since the pandemic, states have received an unprecedented influx of federal COVID relief and infrastructure cash. That has led to record high appropriations that oftentimes don't get spent. In the FY 2023 budget, $10 billion of the $48 billion appropriated was never used. In 2018, only $2 billion of the $28 billion budget was left unspent.
No public comment was taken during the budget process and meetings between the House and Senate where the final budget package was finalized only existed behind closed doors. Senators only had a few minutes to review the bills before voting on them and House members had little time to debate as they passed the budget just hours before the constitutional deadline.
This backdoor process drew criticism from Democrats, Freedom Caucus members and the governor as many felt out of the loop.
Elections and initiative changes Fighting over changes that would make it harder to amend the Missouri Constitution again put the brakes on normal operating procedures on the Senate floor this session.
The Freedom Caucus has more than once sent the Senate into disarray over a piece of legislation that again failed to cross the finish line after years of attempts.
The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Mary Elizabeth Coleman, R-Arnold, would have asked voters whether the current threshold to amend the state constitution — a simple majority, or 50% plus one — should be raised to also require a majority vote in at least five of the state’s eight congressional districts.
This year’s proposal included two provisions that led the chamber to several lengthy filibusters totaling more than 100 hours. In addition to the threshold requirement, the provisions would ask voters to bar noncitizens from voting on constitutional amendments and to ban constitutional amendments sponsored by foreign governments.
These provisions are already state law and Democrats made a point of filibustering against those provisions.
Republicans this session also pushed a resolution that would ban ranked-choice voting in Missouri. SJR 78 was passed by the House on Friday. The question will now go to voters to decide.
Ranked-choice voting is a practice where voters rank their preferred candidates on a single ballot until a winner is declared after receiving a majority of the vote. The idea is to give voters more options once their top-ranked choice is eliminated by distributing their vote to their next preferred candidates. Opponents said the practice does the exact opposite by splitting the vote.
While it is not in state law, St. Louis practices a version of ranked-choice voting that will be protected if the ban passes.
Education bill An omnibus education bill, SB 727, raising the minimum teacher salary, allowing charter schools in Boone County and providing private school scholarships to low-income students, has already been signed into law by Gov. Mike Parson. The provisions of the bill, approved by the minimum vote required in the House, are estimated to cost the state $468 million.
The new state minimum salary for teachers is set at $40,000 a year beginning with the next school year and includes additional incentives for teachers with longer careers and those with master’s degrees.
The voucher-like scholarship program for private school students offers up to $6,375 per child for expenses such as tuition, textbooks and transportation. The program is funded by private donors who can claim tax credits.
The size of the bill ballooned from 12 pages to more than 150 because of amendments in the Senate. House leaders blocked amendments so that the bill would not have to be returned for another vote in the Senate out of concern it would die because of filibusters on other topics.
The law requires a public vote to approve any switch to four-day school weeks while providing incentives to schools that stick with five-day weeks.
New crime provisions A major public safety bill that passed during the final House session on Friday made changes to how children are viewed in the court system, increased punishment for various crimes and limited the authority of citizen police review boards, among other items.
The bill tracks legislation passed last year, except for two technical provisions that prompted a veto by Parson. The law increases the age under which children could be considered adults in felony offenses from 12 to 14.
On July 4, 2011, Blair Shanahan Lane was killed by reckless celebratory gunfire. A portion of the bill dubbed "Blair's Law" creates penalties for such activity. After the bill passed on a bipartisan basis Friday, House members rose for a round of applause directed at Blair Lane's mother, who was in attendance.
The bill also creates "Valentine's Law" raising punishments for fleeing a law enforcement stop. It is named for St. Louis County Detective Antonio Valentine, who died in a crash pursuing a person fleeing police.
And there is a provision known as "Max's Law" that increases punishment for injuring or killing law enforcement K-9 dogs.
Sludge regulations House Bill 2134, which would create new regulations for wastewater sludge under the Missouri Clean Water Act, gained bipartisan approval and was signed by Parson.
The bill gained traction as concerns about waste lagoons and land application practices by Arkansas-based Denali Water Solutions have been brought to light. The new law prevents companies like Denali from applying waste as fertilizer without a regulatory process and testing.
Denali was previously forced to cease operations in Missouri after 6,000 gallons of slaughterhouse waste spilled into a field, causing residents to complain about the smell and runoff concerns.
Regulatory Sandbox Act The House Friday gave final approval to SB 894 creating an avenue for new companies offering innovative products to be excused from meeting some state regulations for the first 24 months that they begin offering innovative products to consumers.
Companies would be required to apply and meet certain criteria to participate in the program.
The bill also creates an Office of Entrepreneurship within the Department of Economic Development that will promote policies and initiatives to support the growth of entrepreneurship of Missouri-based businesses with less than ten employees.
Eviction moratorium A bill passed on Friday barred any municipality from enacting an eviction moratorium. The bill, SB 865, comes in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic when cities across the country prevented landlords from evicting tenets. Realtors and apartment associations spoke in favor of the bill as they feel moratoriums violate the rights of property owners.
National Guard deployment Parson signed a bill on May 8 approving additional funding for a Missouri National Guard deployment to the southern border. The governor traveled to Eagle Pass, Texas, to sign House Bill 2016 into law and visit with members who have been deployed since March.
“The battle that we’re fighting down here at the border is keeping it from happening in our own borders, in our own state in Missouri,” Parson said before signing the bill.
Members of the National Guard are assisting with Operation Lone Star after being invited by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Operation Lone Star is a state-level border security effort at the Texas-Mexico border that began in 2021.
The $2.2 million in funding supports the operations of approximately 200 National Guard members and 22 Missouri State Highway Patrol officers for 90 days. Since the start of their mission, only around 50 guardsmen and 22 members of the highway patrol have served in Texas.
Sports wagering moves ahead After years of failed attempts to get legalization through the Missouri General Assembly, sports gambling appears to have found a more promising path.
Early in May, the Winning for Missouri Education committee along with a coaltion of Missouri professional sports teams submitted over 340,000 signatures for a ballot initiative to the Secretary of State's office desk.
If the Secretary of State verifies that enough signatures are genuine, the question would be put to voters in November. Thirty-eight other states have legalized some form of sports wagering.
The petition proposes a 10% tax on wagers to be collected by the Department of Revenue, deposited into the state treasury and credit to the "Gaming Proceeds for Education Fund," raising a projected $35 million.
Approximately $5 million in funds from the sports wagering tax would go into a fund to help compulsive gamblers and the rest would go to public school and higher education programs.
Child tax credits Bipartisan support and a State of the State address plug by Parson helped two bills, SB 742 and HB 1488, which would add provisions allowing for tax credits related to child care services to reach the Senate floor for consideration.
However, opposition from Freedom Caucus members of the Senate stalled action both in an effort to advance bills they felt deserved more priority and out of a general dislike of tax credits. The Senate version is sponsored by Sen. Lauren Arthur, D-Kansas City, while the House bill is sponsored by Rep. Brenda Shields, R-St. Joseph.
Protecting IVF House and Senate bills to protect in vitro fertilization clinics got a flurry of attention but did not advance following an Alabama state court ruling that relied on a state abortion ban to restrict in vitro fertilization clinics.
The Missouri Court of Appeals in St. Louis ruled in 2016 that IVF-created embryos were a matter of “marital property of special order.” This has provided legal protection for doctors and patients in the IVF field.
However, that court ruling cited abortion protection offered by Roe Vs. Wade, which was overturned in 2022. With Missouri having a similar abortion ban to the one in Alabama, leading advocates and lawmakers alike are concerned about what could lie ahead.
Sen. Tracy McCreery, D-Olivette, filed SB 1486 which would specify that Missouri's abortion ban does not have a definition that includes in vitro fertilization embryos that have not been implanted in a body. Rep. Bill Allen, R-Kansas City, filed House Bill 2845 which states that the IVF process is protected under law and no one can be prosecuted for undergoing or administrating IVF.
Here is what happened to other legislative topics that garnered attention during the session but did not pass:
Protections for pesticide maker: HB 2763, sponsored by Rep. Dane Diehl, R-Butler, would have protected pesticide manufacturers from claims that they failed to warn consumers of possible cancer risks in their products as long as the federal Environmental Protection Agency has approved those products.
Much of the debate before the House approved the bill focused on Bayer, the company with U.S. headquarters in St. Louis that purchased Monsanto, the original manufacturer of RoundUp pesticide. According to The Associated Press, the company is seeking to stem a tide of lawsuits claiming that Bayer’s products cause cancer.
Diehl, a farmer, said he drafted the legislation out of fear that Bayer would be forced to pull RoundUp off of the market, harming farmers ability to grow crops. The bill never made it to the Senate floor for consideration.
Presidential primaries: New voting laws passed in 2022 eliminated the presidential primary in Missouri. Following low voter turnout in this year’s Republican presidential caucus, SB 1120 and HB 2618, which would reinstate presidential primaries, passed out of their respective committees. The House bill passed with amendments that would create new residency restrictions for candidates vying for U.S. Congress. Ultimately, neither bill got floor consideration.
The Taylor Swift Act: Bills in both the House and Senate sought to address the impact of problematic images created by artificial intelligence but did not make it into law. While ten states provide some form of retribution for this type of crime, only Minnesota and New York statutes allow for both civil and criminal relief.
The Taylor Swift Act, House Bill 2573, offered by Rep. Adam Schwadron, R-St. Charles, targeted fake pornographic images. The bill was approved by the Special Committee on Innovation and Technology but never received a floor vote. The name of the bill referred to explicit AI-created images of the singer that went viral in January.
A similar bill, Senate Bill 1424, sponsored by Sen. Travis Fitzwater, R-Holts Summit, did not get a hearing.
Media Literacy: Companion bills, House Bill 1513 and Senate Bill 1311, aimed to teach students about media and digital literacy. Neither bill advanced.
Danny's Law: Legislation that sought to protect 911 callers from prosecution when calling to report a hazing incident stalled in the House. The bill was named after former University of Missouri student Danny Santulli, who suffered irreparable brain damage after drinking too much when pledging a fraternity at MU in the fall of 2021.
Danny’s Law was meant to offer exoneration to those involved in hazing incidents if they’re the first to call for emergency help.
“As the mother of three college-age men, I understand this is a major issue,” said Rep. Jo Doll, D-St. Louis, who spoke during a March 7 committee hearing. “It’s really important to give kids the ability to call 911 without being afraid of the consequences to them.”
Protecting major water users: House Bill 2669, which sought to limit information being released to the public about major water users, was approved by a House committee but failed to get a floor vote. The bill was meant to protect the information of Missouri’s family farmers and would keep information about individually identifiable water users from being disclosed to the public.
Highway Commission changes: A bill, House Bill 2568, that would have changed the makeup of the Missouri Highways & Transportation Commission was voted down in a committee in Apri. Two other bills that would have either changed the makeup of the commission or done away with it altogether failed to move forward after being the subject of public hearings in early February.
Nursing restrictions: Missouri is one of only a few states not to allow nurse practitioners to practice independently without the authority of a physician. A House committee passed an amended version of one bill, HB 1773, sponsored by Rep. Chad Perkins, R-Bowling Green, that would allow nurses to practice independently after 6,000 hours of work under a physician's supervision. The bill was never placed on the House calendar, a roadblock which some nurses point to opposition from House Floor Leader Rep. Jonathan Patterson, R-Lee’s Summit.
Dmitry Martirosov, Molly Miller, Aidan Pittman, Grant Green and Madeline Shannon contributed to this story.
Cover image: State Representative Chantelle Nickson-Clark(cq) throws her papers at the end of the legislative session on Friday, May 17, 2024 at the Statehouse in Jefferson City. Nickson-Clark was the first Black woman elected to represent District 67 in St. Louis County in Nov. 2022.

2024.05.18 13:46 Unusual_Wasabi541 Advice - incoming law student with BL+ goals

If this violates rules on this sub feel free to let me know and I will delete the post. I am really just looking for insight from those already practicing, as getting insight from other applicants seems a bit like the “blind leading the blind.”
At this point, I have narrowed down my offers to the following:
UGA - full tuition scholarship, plus Graduate Assistant position paying $10,000/year during 2L and 3L years. If I contribute a large portion of my SA pay towards COL debt, I could leave law school with roughly $0-$20,000 in law school debt.
GULC - 50% merit scholarship, which, after contributing a large portion of SA pay to debt would leave me with approximately $200k in law school debt upon graduation.
I am a 30+ year old with govt, entrepreneurship (co-founded a company), and legal career experience. I am also very focused on a career in health law. My preferred career path would be 2-3 years in BL, then federal government (FTC health group potentially) or public interest practice, eventually leading to either starting my own public interest health law practice or, if possible (I know it is very competitive) pursuing legal academia.
To provide added context:
GULC has one of the best set of programmatic health law resources in the country (although a large student body makes assessing these slightly more challenging), as well as the ability to extern with a federal agency in DC during the academic year.
Conversely, working as a Graduate Assistant at UGA would provide valueable experience within the world of academia. UGA has also already put me into contact with a health law professor whom I respect, although I am not sure if she would actually be the one I would be working with as a GA, but it is possible.
So, the question is:
Is GULC worth $200k more for a better chance at BL and a name that will more easily open doors to BL, academia (although difficult anywhere outside the T-3 + NYU), and would provide better name recognition for later career moves? Also, does the school you went to even hold weight when you are making career moves later on in your career?
I would be happy to hear anyone’s thoughts on the issue. Thanks so much for sharing your insight.
