For Christmas, his mom got him a necklace I think, that was sort of silly but there was a reason she got it. If he didn't like wearing it, I didn't blame him, but he could hang it from a tac on his wall or something. Instead, he actually gave it back to her right there within moments of opening it, saying it wasn't his style.
What finally pissed me off enough to write this was Mother's Day. I asked him weeks ago what he was going to do for his mom. He's 24 and no longer lives with us, but he has a job and is still getting food stamps from his brief unemployment, Actually has more than he needs to the point of stocking up before the benefits expire. Anyway, I remind him weeks ago that Mother's Day is coming up, his mom doesn't want anything but a nice heartfelt card or note because we know he's working hard and trying to save for a car and a better place. We tell him Mom wants to go to ihop, nothing fancy at all. We didn't offer to pay, but I assumed we would. We pick him up and take him after work. While we are waiting for our food, he gives her a card.
The card was literally a picture on the front and a sentence on the inside that he said "this kinda says how I feel so I didn't write anything else." And to be clear, what I mean is: the card had a sentence printed on the inside. He did not write anything, he didn't even sign his name. If we wanted to return the card, we could have. It was literally right off the shelf, and obviously a last minute purchase that he bought from work just moments before we picked him up.
Number one, I hate how shitty it makes me feel when WE show emotional investment in him with not only our thoughtful gifts but also very sincere cards and notes. We show a ton of support, love, and appreciation for him and everything he does and has done. For him to gloss over that while searching for the money inside the card is like holy shit, you're an adult, are you not aware of how selfish you look? If you're going to be an asshole, at least pretend to not be one in front of us. Second, and this is important: You will not be successful in relationships if you are an emotional slug like that. I can't imagine how his girlfriends would feel or how his wife would feel with this approach to her birthday or anniversary. You cannot half-ass something that is significant to you in any way, especially when it is equally or more significant to people you love.
My wife, who often suppresses her reactions to these kinds of things, actually broke down and told me how disappointed she was when she got that Mother's Day card. If she's willing to say something about it, I can only imagine it's more than what she's expressed because she doesn't want to be negative toward her son. I get that. So I can't imagine how low she felt when after all that she's done for him, especially in the past year, his only gift is a last-minute purchase of convenience, no thought, and not even his own words. My son is almost 18 months old. I imagine this is pretty typical - if he eats something good, he just wants more of it. This has led to us giving him foods "in order" of how much he likes them.
Here is an example of lunch today: We gave him peas, then some of a PBJ sandwich, then some blueberries. He eats them, likes them, and generally is happy during meal time.

I really need your advice.
TL;DR - How should I approach my therapist about not being able to fulfill his new contract?
I’ve been in psychodynamic therapy for 4 years with 2 times per week sessions.
I’m very attached to my therapist and therapy has played a massive role in my life. I’ve evolved a lot but the therapeutic relationship has been a continuous emotional roller coaster for me… I have massive attachment trauma and fear of abandonment. So, you can imagine the transference hell I have been living in for the past 4 years.
At the beginning of therapy I signed a contract that states that I can have 8 absences per year. If I cancel 48 hours before the session, then I need to pay for that session but if I announce before, we can reschedule and do “catch up” sessions.
So far, these catch up sessions have really worked out for me/us. I work in my own firm (just me and my husband) and our work involves a lot of traveling for work. Not excessive but I can travel up to 3 times per year, 2 weeks at a time. On top of it, I’m from a different country than I live, so I visit my family in my home country once or twice a year. Until now, I was announcing my therapist about my leave and we would do catch up sessions either before or after I leave or half half. Once, we also caught up his 3 week leave. (So, the way it looked was that I have my usual two sessions, and a third one that was counting as a “catch up”)
Today my therapist announced me that starting with July, he will change his contract and patients will be allowed to have only two weeks of vacation that can’t be split. (Can’t take one week this month and the second week a month from now, for example) and all other absences would be paid.
We spent the entire session “processing” how I feel about these changes (he’s also changing office in a completely different part of the city which would massively change my routine and schedule). I said that I am disappointed but that I will have to deal with it. He tried to touch upon me being really hurt by these changes but I think I went into freeze and started dissociating. I don’t remember a lot from the session. I remember trying to put a brave face and making a lot of jokes and saying that “I’ll just have to deal.”
However, reality started crashing down. I can’t fulfill this new contract without paying a lot of sessions that I won’t attend. I make ok-ish money, but paying 8-12 sessions without attending is not something that I can actually afford.
I have to tell him that I can’t fulfill this new contract (something that he might actually be aware of) and then I guess he needs to terminate me?
4 years just like that?
Also, I don’t want him making exceptions for me or giving me special treatment. It’s not fair for the other patients. At the same time I can’t get over the fact that my therapy and my relationship with him might just disappear because of a new contract that he decided to change?
It’s extremely unfair and I can’t even allow myself to be aware of the magnitude because I will probably have a mental breakdown.

Hey, so I have been having a bit of trouble moving things forward in my relationship, and was wondering if I could get some advice.
I myself am not on the spectrum, but I have been dating a girl who very much is. We started dating back in our final year of high school, and went into this relationship with a mutual understanding that our education was the most important thing for us. We went to different colleges in different states, however we stayed in contact during this time, and were often together when we were on break and came back home.
I graduated 2 years ago, and she just graduated last December, and her family and I went to go see her graduate. I had hoped that once we had both graduated, we would be able to start moving things forward, however that has not happened. I have spoken to her about my wants to move things forward, but I have been unable to do so. I have a few examples of my attempts to move things forward here for you as well.
She has always had a touch aversion, and I have respected that. I recently stated I would like to work with her to help her get more comfortable with having any physical contact with me, and she stated she was open to trying to open up in that regard. However whenever I attempt to schedule something outside of our normal things, it is met with rejection. I understand that and change from normal is scary, however I have also proposed a new normal twice that we could slowly transition into, but that also has not worked out. We currently speak on the phone once a week, and see each other once a week as well, however my attempts to do more are not working out.

Yesterday, for Mother’s Day, I wanted to go to a baseball game. I’ve always been a sports fan, growing up, I was all into watching baseball, basketball, etc. I played volleyball in school. No one in my family liked sports and at school, I experienced either allegations of being a lesbian or only watching sports for the hot men, all of these allegations were by the girls in my middle and high school. I still was passionate about sports and even considered majoring in psychical education.
I mentioned this idea a few months back and my biological children all said they didn’t want to go, the only one who was interested was my stepson Axton (13M).
Axton is the jock of the family, like I was. He plays baseball and said he wanted to go with me. Axton is close to me, probably closer than he is to his dad or mom. Axton is a sweet kid, but is one of those kids who has a strong desire for autonomy. He goes to a Montessori school as he flourishes there compared to regular school, where the opposite is true for his siblings and step siblings. He’s always challenging authority, including mine. He can apologize when he’s wrong, but if he believes he was unfairly grounded, he’ll wear that grounding as a badge of honor for sticking up for what he believes in. He can be a real pain sometimes, but he’s also very caring and a good boy at heart.
His biological mother tries to be more of an authority figure, which my husband and I always back her decisions, but it hasn’t worked for her and her relationship with Axton isn’t great. Axton is most open to me and he’s told me he loves his mom, but she hasn’t earned his respect and tells me I’m the only parental figure that has. I see this in how he behaves to, I’m the disciplinarian when it comes to Axton because he’s more likely to listen to me than his father.
A few days after I mentioned the idea, Axton said he was going to the game with me, even if that meant not spending Mother’s Day with his biological mom. Luckily, his mom and stepdad agreed that they shouldn’t force him to do an event with her over going with me, as he’d be happier with me.
Despite asking my kids multiple times, none wanted to come. My husband was working yesterday and my stepkids were with their mom, so it was just Axton and I.
It was a great day, Axton went with me to get a manicure, and even asked if he could have his fingernails done for the first time. We also shopped in some antique stores, and I told Axton he could get whatever he wanted. He ended up getting a few jerseys and buttons and reading cards. I also bought him stuff at the stadium.
When we got home, my kids and stepkids saw what Axton had got, they were jealous and asked why I would buy him so much and my 10 year old said he would’ve gone if he knew he could get gifts out of me. My daughter asked if I made him get the manicure and said manicures weren’t for boys, and he said he got it “because I wanted to, it looked cool”.
After that, we had a discussion with her and discussed her homophobia, but she started to argue with us about Axton and how he always is “rebellious” and she told us we should “punish him harder”, when he does act up, we asked for specific examples but she gave none. Axton certainly does act up and gets grounded, but never does anything morally wrong like bigotry. We told her she wasn’t being constructive in her criticism and to knock it off. They’re all still mad at me about the splurging on Axton, saying this proves “favoritism”, I asked for specific examples and my kids wouldn’t provide any, but said that we should “know what they mean”. AITA?

So as with many users here, my relationship with MIL was fine before having a baby, but now that he’s here she’s developed a classic case of baby rabies and has become a bit of a boundary pusher. I know this is common for new moms, but watching her interact with my son (4 months old) spikes my anxiety majorly and she’s suddenly way more annoying to me than she was before the baby. She lives about an hour away and I’d say we see her and FIL maybe once every 2 weeks. Some examples: MIL loves to barge into our house and try to take the baby from me immediately. I don’t think she’s ever actually asked if she can hold him, it’s usually “I’m going to steal him now” (one time she walked up to me while he was actively nursing and said TO THE BABY “Grandma’s going to burp you now so Mommy can get up”, no hello to me or anything-I just stared at her for a minute and told her I was going to nurse until he was finished), uses obnoxious baby talk in a weird voice, and always “answers” AS the baby if anyone says anything to him which drives me absolutely nuts. We also have a hard time getting her to surrender the baby back to one of us if he starts crying, because of course she knows exactly what’s wrong and can fix it. She is just hyper focused on him the entire time she’s around, to the point that she’s impossible to have a normal conversation with because she’s so busy following me around commenting on every tiny little movement or sound he makes. As someone with a VERY large personal space bubble, this is increasingly hard for me to put up with, and I’ve started going up to the bedroom to nurse or rock him to sleep using the excuse that the baby is too distracted by lights and sound right now because I’m tired of her hovering over me waiting for him to finish so she can try to scoop him up again.
This is her first grandchild and I’m glad she’s excited and loves him so much but she is just overwhelming and something about her audacity and lack of self awareness to how annoying she’s being puts me on the defensive and makes me dread seeing her. My husband has for the most part just let her get away with all of it. Whenever she asks to visit he’ll agree before consulting with me, which I try to be understanding of because it’s his mom but sometimes I’m just not in the mood to see people, even family. I’ve tried explaining to him how anxious her actions make me feel and his response has been that she’s always this annoying around babies (he has a big family with lots of younger cousins) and everyone just tries to ignore it. Which was not the most helpful response ever and had started causing some strain/resentment between us.
ANYWAY, MIL has started calling husband every few days to ask how the baby’s doing and asking when she can see him again. A few days ago they’re talking while baby is asleep on me and I hear him say “well I appreciate that, but please don’t just stop by. You need to text OP to make sure it’s a good day for a visit.” Apparently she had been planning to start “dropping in” on me the 1-2 days a week my husband goes into the office to “help out”(aka hog the baby and annoy me) and he actually stood up to her and told her she needs to ask first! AND THEN he told her we were planning to just have a chill day at home for my first Mother’s Day and could celebrate with her soon another time- in previous years the expectation has always been that all her kids come visit her all day on Mother’s Day (I did send a card and flowers so it’s not like we ignored her). This was 4 days ago and she hasn’t asked to see the baby since so she’s either realized we need some space or is super mad to be told no for once. Either way, I had a lovely peaceful Mother’s Day at home and got to snuggle my baby as much as I wanted, and I’m so thankful my husband has started to realize he needs to be the one to say “no”!

As we get into the new season, I just thought it would be fun to track and discuss the themes and motifs this show has kept up throughout the seasons so far so we can see how they play out in Season 4:)

Honestly, when I really laid all these out, it made me appreciate the writing so much more, even in moments I didn't really care for the first time around.

What it Means to Save Someone

This is probably the main theme of the series and the thing that becomes the biggest downfall for all our protagonists. "Saving Someone" has now become something that puts the viewer on edge.
How many times has a character exclaimed "I'm trying to save you," when actually all they're doing is trying to serve their own selfish agenda and alleviate their own guilt or affirm their image of themselves?
I could seriously write a whole essay about this and how it ties to the idea of What it Means to Be a Hero. But feel free to discuss it more in the comments.

Subverting "Truth, Justice, and the American Way

The Boys is constantly exploring how Vought and The Boys bend the truth to serve their own agenda and are constantly asserting that the definition of truth typically belongs to whoever has the power (Power being another big motif).
Justice vs. Vengeance is also a big one that keeps coming up. Starlight is arguably the only character who is earnestly pursuing true justice on this show and tbh, it cramps everyone's style. MM and Hughie also great characters to follow for this because they are both genuinely trying to do the right thing and are often seduced by Butcher's much more attractive Vengeance call.

Mother and Father Relationships

This is another one that could turn into a whole essay and one that I'd probably have to go back and take more notes to explore. But I think it really ties into this idea of Power and Responsibility. Because isn't that the cornerstone of what it means to be a parent?
Children are seen by society as the ultimate innocents who must be protected at all costs, but they are so often abused and exploited by the people who are supposed to protect them - Even when it's unintentional. Parents so often see children as extensions of themselves rather than individuals. Simply tools to affirm their own existence or be mirrors of themselves (which ties into the whole selfish "I'm trying to save you" theme).
We see this explored with Ryan a lot, but this was beautifully culminated at the end of S3 when MM realizes he needs to be honest with his daughter about what he's been going through, not to justify his mistakes, but to show her respect and acknowledgement of a two-way relationship.

Power in the Hands of Women and Power in the Hands of POC

Oh man. This is another one that's like... A whole ass paper.
Super powers are definitely a vehicle to explore societal power with woman and POC on this show and the daunting idea that even with superpowers or wealth, race and gender can still be used as kryptonite.
We see it touched on in the ongoing discussions of how to properly "play the game" and achieve real power.
We see the Power and Women explored pretty in depth in Season 2, but Ashley is a really awesome ongoing exploration of this theme through a gender lens as she rises to power at Vought.
A Train and Noir are an obvious example of this exploration through a racial lens, but it's definitely also been touched on through pretty much every character of color on this show. I think they really got into it in a really interesting way on Gen V as well, but I don't want to bog this down any harder.

Gender Roles and Toxic Masculinity

Just making sure everyone is on the same page - Toxic Masculinity does NOT mean that masculinity is inherently toxic. It is meant to focus on the unhealthy presentations and expectations of performing the role of "being a man."
Toxic Masculinity really became the focus of Season 3. We see that most clearly in the character of Soldier Boy (though I do worry that due to Jensen Ackles natural charisma, it didn't quite achieve the impact the writers intended), but also in Hughie.
Although many people (including me) felt like it was a disappointing step back for Hughie, I'm actually leaning back the other way on the rewatch. I think that the feeling powerless (which is something we feel as ordinary citizens all the time) moment Hughie had when he realized all the work he did with Neuman was built on a lie probably threw a lot out of whack. It makes perfect sense that the comments about his vulnerability and softness might start hitting a little differently than they used to.
Frenchie and MM on the other hand, are great examples of characters of healthy masculinity in their willingness to share power, be vulnerable, and self reflect so that they are able to support the interests of their loved ones.

What is REAL Power?

This is the final theme I'll mention because it's a big one and I think it's going to be important in the upcoming season. Where does real power come from? Money? Strength? Social influence? Knowledge? Relationships?

I've been recently getting into stoicism and I'm wondering how a stoic would deal with their girlfriend saying she's mad at you but she doesn't want to talk until tomorrow about it.
I'm wondering if i'm supposed to just not worry about it because it's outside of my control until I know what's going on?

Hey girls and guys,
I (f 29) am not 100% sure yet if my boyfriend (m 25) is a narcissist but there’s been already many signs. On the other hand sometimes he can be very understanding, comforts me when I cry and is sometimes just a sweet person, which speaks against it. On the other hand, he can be very manipulative, gaslighting me, making me scared to loose him in fights, controlling, aggressive and the list goes on.
To cut my story a bit shorter: we‘ve been in a relationship since 1 1/2 years and I caught him doing some suspicious things already way too often. He always has some plausible excuse when I confront him and somehow pulls me back into the relationship every time by making me believe he’s innocent and what I saw or „found out“ just looks different to what it actually was. I also caught him lying already numerous times.
Many of you probably know the feeling of being attached to someone even though they sense something is wrong. My intuition is telling me that he’s not loyal (maybe not cheating, but I am sure he’s doing things behind my back that he doesn’t want me to do to him. For example talking to other girls. We definitely made it clear in our relationship that that’s not okay) The thing is, until now I never found any real proof just many many (very suspicious) hints that he always has some magical explanation for.
I want to get clarity now and I already have a plan how to do it. A friends friend of mine, who’s really pretty and I think would be his type is willing to help me. He doesn’t know her and doesn’t know that I know her. She’s going to follow him on Instagram, like his pictures and start texting him. If possible she’s going to arrange a meeting with him. If he will show up I will have my definite answer and I don’t think that he can pull me back in the relationship after this mission.
I feel like he made me become this crazy person and I know all this is not normal anymore but I need clarity if everything’s in my head or if he would really do something like that. Should I do it?

I feel stupid about being so bothered by this, but it’s been affecting me for years and I’d appreciate some advice.
My partner is wonderful and overall it’s the best relationship I’ve ever been in. We’re late 30s, have been together for years, and are getting married. The ‘but’ is that every few months I get bothered that he almost never calls me beautiful or says anything that expresses sexual attraction.
His default is to tell me I look cute or lovely once every few weeks when I’m very dressed up, but that’s about it. I first brought this up a year in, and told him I appreciated the compliments but would love it if occasionally he used language that made me feel desired - for example ‘beautiful’, ‘sexy’, ‘stunning’, etc. His response was that he is ‘of course’ attracted to me and would work on it, but nothing changed. Every few months it bugs me again and I bring it up, and again nothing changes. Sometimes he’ll be defensive, and other times he seems annoyed by the insecurity of me wanting to hear this.
I get hit on a decent amount and previous partners have said a lot of verbally affirmative things. I care a lot about my appearance and spend a decent amount of time and money looking my best. I know it makes me shallow and it feels pathetic to care about it so much, but it hurts that the one person I want to look beautiful for doesn’t seem to see it.
It wouldn’t bother me if my partner used the same neutral language for other women he finds attractive, but fairly often he will refer to someone we know or a celebrity as beautiful or gorgeous or some other high praise, so I feel like there are special desexualized words he uses for me only. Our sex life is decent, and I’ve told him that feeling verbally desired really turns me on but that doesn’t make a lasting difference either. I hit on him or tell him he looks handsome or sexy a few times a month and he says thank you but doesn't usually reciprocate.
I have tried different ways to bring it up with him and have gone over it with a therapist, but at this point I just don’t think it will ever change. Are there different ways I can look at this, or adjust my own thinking so that it doesn’t eat away at me?

I have been with my boyfriend for two years now.
Lately I've been kinda jealous of my friends who have had experiences with different people, from random make out sessions to full on sex. I've only kissed two people in my life and only had sex with my partner.
Like for example, I am bi and never experienced anything with a girl and I would like to.
I feel like I'm tied up in a relationship where I'm not even having much fun rn.
I've been thinking about it only for a few days now, but it makes me act completely different around him ( because I wouldn't like to act as if nothing was happening and just randomly break up with him one day, but I also don't wanna act weird to end up not breaking the relationship).
Maybe the best thing would be to break up, but he's always saying how in love he is with me, and I feel like I am not anymore. Like, I love him, but I would say more as a best friend or family, I lost that spark some time ago. But the thing is that it's not that easy because we're in the same class and we share all of our uni friends, and we got over so many things together.
And also, last year around this time I broke up with him for some time because I was feeling so much pressure around having sex (Ive been very low libido for like 1,5 years now) even though he didn't push me that much. I felt like it was the best for my mental state, but turns out it broke me and I was sad everyday and stuff, so we ended up coming back, but every other day I wish I hadnt.
Also, I haven't been able to have piv sex for like +6 months now??? Idk if it has to do with this too.
This is my first long term relationship and I feel like this is normal and it's not bad to break up, but I don't wanna hurt him but I dont wanna hurt me either...
I don't wanna jump to conclusions because I think part of this comes because of the stress I have right now because of the soon to come final projects and exams. And because we're in the same class we see each other every day and that's not helping me much.
And before you suggest it, no, I wouldn't like an open relationship

My assistance dog (Im in the UK) is charity trained. As part of my training with my first assistance dog (12 1/2 years ago) they introduced Canine Calming Signals, and the person who first recognised them, Turid Rugaas.
Turid is a behaviourist and an affirmative, force-free trainer in Norway. She first talked about things most people easily recognise now- like a play bow- and was there at the start of increasing awareness about dogs' awareness of humans, and ability to read humans. You might be asking yourself, tho... what does this matter for a service dog?
Your dog has nothing better to do than watch you, constantly, and try to figure you out... so if you understand what things are especially meaningful to your dog, you can make it easier for them to understand what you want, need, like, or don't like.
For example- a yawn and a look away after licking the lips. This is clear "dog speak" for "Calm down, there is nothing to worry about, and you being all excited is gonna stress me out".
Watch your dog and see how often THEY use the sign!
Dogs (mostly) naturally do everything they can to "keep the peace" with other dogs (and people). The way they approach each other, the way they hold their bodies... it tells you what they are thinking. Each dog varies a bit, so learning *your* dog is important.
When my dog is being silly and over-excited, or conversely, is stressed in a place that might be unfamiliar (for example), I can look at him, lick my lips, yawn, and turn my head away- and he thinks "Oh, she's not worried, and she doesn't want me to be..." and he will calm down. In one of her books, there is a great story where someone moves with their dog to a house that has a commuter rail track at the foot of the garden. Every time the train goes by, the dog gets incredibly stressed and shakes, cries, and tried to hide. They looked at the time tables, and just before the train was to come, the people rewarded the dog, and as the train started to approach they engaged in a positive interaction like playing or cheerful grooming. When the dog starts to show signs of distress, they lick-yawn-turn. Over time, the dog learned "trains don't scare mum and dad, so, they don't train me either" and the dog no longer cared about the train.
You can go anywhere to learn more, and there are some good books- but it's worth it. In time, you learn to read your dog as well as communicate with them- both strengthen and improve both your training and your relationship.
