2024.05.19 07:38 wanbincell Bold idea. We need to reconstruct the cancer treatment system from the ground up using first principles.

Just as SpaceX has developed reusable rockets, the field of cancer treatment needs to break from tradition and find truly effective treatments. By applying first principles—starting from basic principles and reevaluating existing treatment methods—we might find more effective treatment options. This allows patients to precisely choose the most beneficial treatment from the standard options recommended by doctors. This is not just a choice of treatment but a respect for and responsibility towards life.
The importance of first principles thinking in analysis lies not only in its ability to help us break down data but also in encouraging us to question and understand the fundamental elements that constitute the data. This method includes the following key steps: Clarify the Problem, Decompose the Problem, Analyze Basic Components, Recombine Information.

2024.05.19 07:21 wood_chomper A man had been drinking molten wax from my candles.

I first started noticing that something was wrong around 3 months ago. At the time, I was working from home and would usually light a scented candle while I worked, which usually helped me relax and stay focused on my work. I would usually burn through a candle a week, but over time, the candles started to take less time to fully burn up. At first, I thought that this was because of a change in ingredients the company that made the candles used, but the problem persisted after I switched candle brands, which I once again blamed on the candle manufacturers.
I kept this belief for another week until the first incident. While getting up from my computer desk, which faces away from the candle, to take a quick bathroom break, I caught a glimpse of the lit candle. A two-inch layer of molten wax rested on another three-inch layer of solid wax, the wicks rising out at first and being somewhat visible through the molten layer, finally breaking the surface and being slowly burned away. The flames flickered as I swung the door open and walked out of the room. When I returned 10 minutes later, the molten layer was gone, and the wicks had been shortened so that the flames rested right above the solid layer of the wax. At first, I thought that the glass jar that contained the candle was leaking, but after a short inspection, I was only able to find two small drops of candle wax that had solidified right next to the candle on the bedside table. I still had 2 hours of work left to do, but I was too lost in thought and was unable to do any work for the rest of the day.
Every night before I go to sleep, I like to read for at least 30 minutes, and while reading, I usually light a candle. Around 4 days later, I had mostly forgotten about the incident and went back to using candles. Due to my naivety, it returned.
I fell asleep while reading with a candle lit on my bedside table. I woke up to loud slurping noises. As I opened my eyes, the brightness of the light I had not turned off almost blinded me. As my eyes tried to readjust to the light and focus on what was in front of me, I saw a somewhat humanoid dark gray to light blue blur that contrasted with the white paint on the walls behind it. Another gray line stretched from the shape's head to the candle on my bedside table. I could feel my heart skip five consecutive beats. I opened my mouth and tried to force out a scream for help, but the pressure I applied to my throat was way beyond what it was able to handle, leading me to only produce a light wheezing sound. I tried to sit up or to at least prop myself up, but my muscles failed me. Trying to push myself up with my arms felt impossible. As I stared at the figure that had suddenly appeared in my room, my eyes finally managed to focus, making it possible for me to see the intruder who was now staring at me. The figure was a man at least 7 feet tall, fully naked; he looked bloated; his eyes were bloodshot and looked like they would pop out of their sockets; at any point, his skin was a grayish light blue.
HIS LIPS
His lips extended from his mouth like an elephant's trunk, which had been split in half. The lips extended from the man's face to the candle; the flames had been put out. He was using his lips as a makeshift straw, slowly sucking up all the molten wax from the candle, which had fully liquified while I was asleep. I laid in bed, unable to move, unable to scream for help, staring until he emptied the jar. His lips retracted back to his face, the molten wax solidifying on their tips and cracking, flakes of wax falling off the man's lips and falling to the floor. The man grinned, staring at me. The ridges and gaps between the teeth were filled in with wax, making it impossible to make out where one tooth ended and the next one began. The man opened the door he was standing next to, but instead of walking out of the room, he stepped behind it. His face peered at me from above the door, and then once again, like he had done to drink the wax, the man puckered his lips, which stretched from his mouth and floated to me. I shook and tried to roll over away from him. I wanted to get up and run, but my fear had taken over my body. Tears flowed from my eyes. He kissed me on the cheek, leaving flakes of wax and light moisture. He retracted his lips and lowered his head behind the door.
I don't remember falling asleep, but when I woke up, I saw the empty glass jar, which at one point contained the candle. Even though I had hoped that what had happened was a dream, it wasn't. I still had flakes of wax on my cheek, and on my bedroom floor, the wax in the jar had disappeared. I called the police, but they were unable to find anyone in my apartment; they also could not find any evidence of a break-in.
After the break-in, I started looking for a new apartment to move to, thinking that the man was tied to the building I was in, but even though I had thrown out all of my candles, I could not stomach spending another hour in my apartment, constantly looking over my shoulder or walking around with my back pressed up against the wall to not allow it to creep up on me. Thankfully, my friend Emma was able to let me stay over at her apartment while I looked for a new one for myself.
Me and Emma have been friends since we were 8, and we've been there to support each other when times get rough. This isn’t the first time I've had to stay over at her house for an extended amount of time; in fact, I have had to stay over at Emma’s as many times as she has had to stay over at my apartment, whether it was because of evictions after losing a job, breakups, or a candle wax drinking squatter. I didn't even know if it was human. I mean, sure, it looked like one, but human lips are not supposed to do what his did, and somehow it didn't have a reaction to molten wax being poured down its esophagus. I didn't tell Emma about what happened—the details at least—I just told her that a man had broken into my house and was watching me sleep. The only people I told the truth to were my therapist and the cops, and all of them disregarded what I told them as my mind making things up after a traumatic event.
For a while, I believed what they said—I mean, why wouldn’t I?—but then I started seeing him again. For a few days, I thought it was my mind playing tricks on me again like it had done during the night of the incident. For split seconds out of the corner of my eye, I would see the outline of a tall, bloated figure. At first, they were hours apart, but after a while, it became constant. He was standing in each room I passed, in every single dark corner I glanced past, and then he spoke.
“FeeD MeEeee”
It stood in the kitchen, peering over from a small gap between the fridge and the sink, where the trash can that had been knocked over onto its side usually stood. His voice was raspy, and every word that came out of his mouth was distorted as if he were gargling water, but still, I could somehow clearly make out each word he said from over 15 feet away.
“Please just leave me alone I… why are you following me?”
I shouted at the figure, the same fear that had taken over my body during the night I saw him for the first time paralyzing me, making it impossible for me to move anything other than my eyes, eyelids, and mouth.
“i’M sTarviNg, I nEEd You To FeEd ME”
It replied again. Now, stepping out from behind the fridge, he stepped directly onto a rotten banana. Its mushy brown content’s seeping out of the peel under the pressure of his decomposing foot, which was covered in scabs, and took up the same grayish light blue color as the rest of his body. He mostly looked the same; his bloodshot eyes bulged from their sockets, but now his tongue was swollen. It peeked out from between his bloated, cracked gray lips; it stared at me, waiting for an answer.
“Ok, I’ll.. I’ll feed you, but please just... leave me alone.”
I replied, the tone of my voice shifting into high-pitched squeals with every quick breath I took. He looked satisfied by my response. He somehow squeezed his bloated body back into the gap that was at least four times smaller than him. After peering over at me from above the fridge, he bent over backwards, his spine releasing a series of sickening cracks until he was fully obscured by the fridge, and then he vanished.
Still barely in control of my body, I limped over to the couch tucked away in the back corner of the living room, it took me at least 10 minutes to steady my breathing and 20 more to fully regain control of my body again but as soon as I did I ran out the house and to the nearest store, during the 15-minute walk he stared at me through dark windows and the backs of cars, peered out at me from gaps between leaves in the trees and bushes, he even followed me into the store staring at me from the middle of deserted isles before disappearing right before my eyes were able to fully catch him, once I finally got the candles I randomly picked four off of the shelves and rushed to the self checkout.
When I arrived home, I had 2 hours before Emma got off work. I didn't want to feed it while she was home, and I didn't want her to see it. I pulled out two of the candles from the black plastic bag and placed them on the kitchen table, the first a light blue candle named “Garden Rain” and the second a red candle named “Juicy Watermelon." I pulled out a lighter from one of the drawers Emma used after her stove stopped lighting on its own and lit each of the 6 wicks on the candles. As soon as I started seeing the wax melt under the heat of the burning wicks, I dropped the lighter onto the table next to the candles and ran out of the room. I could not stomach seeing that thing again; even just thinking about it made me shudder and hyperventilate. The paralyzing fear that seeing him caused me made me want to vomit.
At least 30 minutes later I started to hear it drink even though the living room and kitchen were separated by a wall, even though I had closed the door I could still hear what at first started as slurping sounds which were followed up by loud gulps, then it stopped, and once again 30 minutes later it started drinking, as the slurping started once again I heard the door to the apartment crack open, it was Emma, as she stepped through the door I saw her carrying two large brown paper bags of groceries in her hands, she was headed to the kitchen.
“Hey let me grab those for you”
I said running over to her, my voice shaking.
“Oh, thanks. Are you… okay, you look scared?”
My eyes shot wide open in a mixture of fear and surprise. I said the first thing that came to mind.
“Yeah just umm… I didn't expect you to come home so early and I got a bit spooked”
“shit sorry, I know I should have called you, work let me off early today,”
I started to turn away from her walking to the kitchen.
Trying to keep her away from the kitchen I told her to wait for me in the living room because I wanted to talk to her about something. I didn't know what I would talk to her about but that was a problem for future me to resolve, somehow it worked.
“What's that sound?”
She called out to me while walking towards the living room couch. It took me a few seconds to come up with an excuse.
“I think it’s the sink, or the pipes at least”
I opened the door to the kitchen with my eyes closed at first hesitant to look knowing what would be greeting me. slowly prying my eyes open I started to see its outline, my muscles started to lose strength as the details of the man came into my view, I felt the grocery bags start to slip from my arms, my knees buckled, face first I fell onto the kitchen floor scattering the groceries all over the floor, I mixture of a light scream and a yelp escaped from my mouth as my body made contact with the floor, Emma concerned for my safety ran into the kitchen, she didn't scream, using all of the strength and mobility I had left in my muscles I rolled over expecting to see her face drenched in terror, her body frozen still unable to move just like my body had done the first time that I saw him, but Emma looked concerned, the man was gone, she crouched down beside me.
“Oh my god are you ok? What happened?”
I looked around observing my surroundings.
“I um… I… I tripped on the little thing at the bottom of the doorframe”
I finally managed to blurt out another excuse, not being able to remember what the name of a door sill was. I started to sit up using a part of the energy that had returned to my body, pain pulsed through my chest and arms, Emma looked at me with a concerned face.
“You've been acting really weird since I got home, are you sure you're ok?”
“Yeah… I think I’m just having one of those days you know”
The confusion on Emma’s face said that she didn’t know and to be honest I didn't either, I guess my luck of pulling random excuses out of my ass ran out, Emma thought that she triggered some sort of PTSD response after barging into the house unannounced at first apologizing then trying to change the subject to stop my trembling which I was still unsuccessfully trying to hide from her.
“Did you buy candles?”
Emma asked picking the groceries apart from the garbage that spilled out the can that the man had knocked over, placing them on the table next to the now half-empty glass jars, the flames flickered above the inch or so of molten wax the man was unable to finish drinking.
“Yeah I’ve been struggling with work lately, they usually help me focus”
“Huh Interesting combination you’ve got going on here”
She looked at me and smiled slightly, I smiled back and chuckled to seem normal.
“Yeah even I don't know what I was trying to accomplish here, to be honest”
I tried to help Emma clean up the spilled groceries but she did not let me, she told me that I needed to recover like I had been in a car crash instead of having taken a little tumble. After a few seconds of silence, Emma spoke again.
“Anyway, what did you want to talk to me about earlier?”
A quick jolt of stress shot through my body, in a jumbled mess of lies and fear I had forgotten what I had told Emma, I sat there in silence for a few seconds unable to come up with an excuse
“I…umm… I don’t remember, it wasn't anything serious though”
“Damn did you hit your head too?”
She said once again proudly smiling at her joke.
At this point Emma picked up the last bag of potato chips from the floor and placed it on the table, then she opened the fridge and started loading the groceries into it.
“Anyway I gotta go get back to work’’
I blurted out after a few more seconds of awkward silence.
“Alright well good luck”
I walked over into the living room and sat down in front of my workstation, which now consisted of a laptop sitting on a small foldable TV tray that had just barely enough room left on it to fit a small USB mouse.
The last thing I remember, before I fell asleep, was me mindlessly scrolling through apartment listings while Emma watched a random 90’s horror movie I’m positive only had a budget of $500.
I woke up with a light stinging pain shooting through my dry throat, and a dim hissing sound caused by thousands of water drops striking the ground outside filled the room. I pressed the spacebar on my laptop, the brightness of the screen blinding me temporarily, after taking a few seconds to let my eyes readjust I managed to make out the time, 3:45 AM. A strong smell I was unable to make out the origin of assaulted my nostrils. Lavender.
The smell hitting my nose had the same effect on me that I would expect smelling salts would have on a weightlifter right before they set a world record. Before I knew it my legs were moving on their own at an almost uncontrollable pace, fighting back against my mind which was telling them to slow down after years of being used to navigating both mine and Emma’s apartment as steadily as possible to not bother the neighbors.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity I stood before Emma’s bedroom door, a faint, yellow, pulsating light radiated from a lamp and snuck out of a small gap between the door and the doorframe, reluctantly I pushed my left hand up against the door, my right hand grasping onto the door frame for a sense of stability, once the door was fully agape I scanned the inside of the room my heart skipping a beat for every humanoid shadow cast up onto the wall by the lights from the wicks which were set ablaze and were being slowly burnt away.
I walked into Emma’s room and made my way over to her bedside table to put out the candle, as I stepped closer towards her, her face became more defined, I could finally make out her features, she was awake, but no she could not have been, even though her eyes were wide open they never blinked, she didn't even move slightly, as I moved closer I finally managed to fully make out the expression of pure terror on her face, her mouth wide agape as if she was about to release a deafening screach, but she could not have, a single drop of solidified wax dribbled out of the corner of her mouth and clung to her cheek, my eyes traced the cream colored path back towards her mouth, first up her cheek then between the corner of her mouth and finally behind her teeth, there instead of her tongue or the roof of her mouth I saw a wall of wax which had filled in the entirety of her mouth.
I fell to my knees and hunched forward supporting my body weight with my arms, I was too late, I resisted the urge to vomit and got back up onto my feet, a mixture of tears and snot slid down my face and onto my lips, shaking now I slowly started limping over towards my phone which I had left on the couch next to where I had awoken just minutes before, just minutes before my life was destroyed because of my lies if I had just told Emma what I had gone through, if I had just told her what had happened on the night of the incident which now seemed trivial, even if she thought that I was crazy, I know that she would have complied just to make me feel comfortable.
It took me at least 30 seconds of repeated attempts to stabilize my hands enough to properly dial 911. “Someone broke into my apartment and hurt my friend” was the only reasonable explanation I could come up with that would not get the operator to hang up on me thinking that this was a prank call.
I sat there in the living room for an agonizing 10 minutes, crying, my sadness slowly transformed into anger towards myself, and my mind raced thinking of all the lies I’d told, I kept thinking that if I had just told her the truth she would not have been laying there in her bed, her body bloated, “every single orifice has signs of forced penetration and has been filled with what seems to be candle wax” is what was written on her autopsy report.
For a few days I was the main suspect in Emma’s murder, but due to the almost unstoppable crying and the unresponsive state that I was in when the police arrived, mixed with the lack of evidence of me having a way to produce 30 pounds of candle wax led to me being released out of police custody, but because I was the main suspect I was not told any details about what had fully happened to Emma, for days all I had to work off of was the image of her face frozen in terror, and a short glance I caught of her bloated body as she was being carted out on a stretcher.
I recounted every single word of our last conversations over and over again until they became permanently etched into my brain.
Emma’s parents originally wanted to cremate her, as that is what she had somewhat jokingly asked for whenever the topic of funerals came up, well she had joked about wanting to have had unpopped popcorn shoved down her throat before she was sent off to “scare the shit out of the guy cremating me” but due to all the wax which would have been impossible to get out of her body they were forced to bury her.
A few days before Emma’s funeral her body disappeared.
After Emma’s death, her parents took me into their home, after reading the autopsy reports and seeing her corpse they had thrown out every single candle they owned which made their home the safest choice I had, still, this did not stop me from buying a machete and keeping it under my bed, just in case.
I was laying on the bed in their guest bedroom The day that the police informed Emma’s parents about her disappearance, the bedroom is right above the front porch of the house, at first I heard them ring the doorbell which was followed up by 3 powerful knocks on the door, for about a minute I laid there on the bed listening to muffled voices exchanging distorted words I was barely able to make out which slowly transformed into distorted weeps, curious I lifted myself up from the bed, made my way over to the window and carefully lifted the bottom panel making Shure to not make too much noise, the distorted muffled sounds started forming into coherent words “We checked the security footage but the only strange thing we could see was a 5 second time jump” one of the officers spoke in a serious and almost monotone voice “which meant that the security guard who was the only person in the building had to climb down 2 flights of stairs walk through a 40 foot long hallway and then drag her body back up stairs and out of the building in 5 seconds” Emma’s mom let out yelp “ but don’t worry ma'am that’s actually good news because we know that her corpse is still somewhere within the building and was probably brought to the wrong floor by an intern, we’ve already warned all of the staff at the hospital to keep an eye out, and we also sent 5 officers to search the hospital”
I could not believe what I was hearing, my breathing quickened, but this time instead of fear I felt anger, that fucker stole her corpse and was probably in the weird separate plane of existence he always went back to after terrorizing me, cutting off chunks of her body, melting her, and drinking her.
I closed the window Emma’s mom's cries once again turned into a muffled rumble which was only possible to make out if you knew what to look for, I took a few steps back away from the window planning to lay back down, not wanting to bother Emma’s parents. I bumped into something, not something, someone, its fleshy towering form as solid as a wall sent me tumbling forward, I knew it was him, he had returned to take me too, to stretch his swollen cracked lips, push them down my esophagus, fill my lungs and stomach with wax. But despite all of that this time I was not scared, I was angry, and I was not going to stand there in terror like I had the last time I saw him.
I fell forward onto my knees my face missing the window sill just by mere inches, I put my hands onto the floor, lifted one of my knees, and rotated 180 degrees now facing the monster, to the right of him pushed up against the wall was the bed, light from the sun reflected off of the metallic button which kept my machete in it’s sheathe, the man started to stretch his lips, they were moving towards me, waving a wiggling through the air like a snake slithering towards me.
I dove towards the bed one of my feet pushing off of the floor and the other pushing against the wall which creaked under the pressure applied to it, I flew for a few moments before slamming down onto the carpet and sliding forward, the heat generated by my skin brushing against the carpet released a sharp stinging pain throughout my body, my outstretched arm landed just a few inches short of the machete, I quickly bent my arms, pushing my body up and crawled towards the machete. my fingers wrapped around the handle I spun around, my back pushed up against the bedside table, once again facing the man, he was still facing the window but his lips faced me and were just a few feet away from me, for what felt like minutes but was most likely no longer than a second, I struggled to hook my finger under the strap securing the machete into its sheath, as the lips inched towards me the man started producing gurgling noises, he was regurgitation wax.
I finally pulled the machete out of its sheath, I swung the blade at the man's lips, the blade was not met with any resistance as it sliced through the man’s lips which landed on the carpeted floor with an audible thud, the man did not have a physical reaction to my counter-attack, his lips kept creeping towards me, once again I slashed at the lips, still no reaction, I repeated this at least 3 more times.
I wanted to kill him, I wanted to take revenge for what he had done to Emma, but fighting back was pointless. I realized that no matter how much I tried to hurt it, I could not kill him, I could not get rid of him.
My rage dissipated and a mixture of fear and sadness crept in, and soon took over my body, I screamed for help, I screamed in fear, in agony, tears streamed down my face as the man's lips finally reached my face, he wasn’t met with any resistance as his lips snuck between mine, pried my jaw open and finally started to slide down my esophagus.
I heard the cops run up the stairs, they started banging on the door asking if I was okay only to have been met with muffled screams, hot wax started to pour down inside of me, the stinging pain of the heat made me want to plunge the machete which I had dropped onto the ground next to me into my stomach to create a gaping wound that the wax would hopefully funnel out of, the texture of the man's slippery, oily lips matched with the poison like flavor of the wax caused me to start gagging, I felt my insides bulging like at any moment my intestines would have been filled to the point where they would pop, I wanted to vomit, the drain myself of the filth I was filled with, but his lips had plugged my throat not allowing anything to get out.
Hearing my muffled screams the cops started kicking the door down, the man retracted his lips, the suction aided my attempts at cleansing my insides, I got onto my hands and knees streams of molten wax pouring out of me, solidifying on the the carpet, with another loud thud the door swung open slamming into the wall, the man was gone.
That’s the last thing I remember before I passed out, but according to one of the doctors who was in the ambulance that brought me to the hospital, I was still semi-responsive during the first 10 minutes of the ride to the hospital.
Approximately 13.4 pounds of wax were removed from my body, the doctors said that I was in a critical condition and some of them did not expect me to make it.
One of the officers who was there the day the man attacked me took a report of what had happened to me, due to the unmistakable evidence of what had happened to both me and Emma, and the fact that this was the 3rd instance of me reporting something like this the police finally started investigating who this man might have been.
Around a month later I was discharged from the hospital and once again have been staying in the living room of Emma’s parent's house.
I’ve been seeing the man again, candles were not allowed in the hospital I stayed at, which means that he’s probably very hungry, he’s close to attacking me again, I know it, he wants to finish what he started and I don't know if I have the power to fight back, I’m not sure if defeating him is even possible, I’m tired.
I’ve been seeing Emma too, her bloated, reanimated corpse often appears to be standing next to the man. If I let him take me will I get to join them? I’ve tried asking but they don’t answer, they just stare, I can’t keep living in constant fear, always looking over my shoulder, I miss Emma.

I recently had the chance to test out the Readywares Waxed Canvas Duffel Bag on a camping trip, and it truly exceeded my expectations. The first thing that caught my eye was its timeless design and high-quality waxed canvas construction. It's no wonder this bag has a rating of 4.7 out of 5, as users consistently rave about its craftsmanship.
Before my trip, I was a little concerned about the stiffness of the waxed canvas, but it quickly softened up as I loaded it with my camping gear. I particularly appreciated the padded handle and base support, which made carrying the duffel bag comfortable and easy, regardless of how heavy it got.
The storage options in this Readywares duffel bag are quite impressive as well. With multiple compartments, I had no trouble keeping my items organized throughout my trip. The only downside was the lack of an interior pouch, which would have been beneficial for smaller items.
In conclusion, the Readywares Waxed Canvas Duffel Bag is a reliable and stylish choice for anyone in need of a high-quality carryall. Its craftsmanship, storage options, and overall size make it a perfect companion for various activities, ranging from weekend getaways to camping trips. However, it could benefit from the addition of an interior pouch to keep smaller items secure.

The high-quality canvas ensures durability and the solid stitching provides extra strength and resistance against wear and tear. Its dimensions of 36x13x13 inches are just the right size for packing all my essentials without feeling bulky or cumbersome.
However, one minor drawback I noticed is that it only has one compartment for organization. While this didn't cause any major issues during my camping trip, I do wish there were additional pockets for smaller items to keep everything more organized.
Overall, the YoKelly 36 inch Canvas Duffel Bag has made my life so much easier and more convenient, offering ample storage space in a lightweight, durable, and versatile package. If you're on the hunt for the perfect travel, camping, or sports bag, I highly recommend giving this duffel a try.

The additional side pocket with a snap closure is a bonus for keeping small items or travel documents organized and easily accessible. I've been using this duffle bag for everything from overnight trips to the gym and it has exceeded my expectations in every way.
However, some users have reported a strong odor upon receiving the item. This can be a bit off-putting, but a couple of washes usually do the trick.

I recently got introduced to the Steeletex Gym Bag by Steele Canvas, and I must say, I've been thoroughly impressed with its performance and quality. The first thing that caught my eye was the unique construction material - it's not your regular canvas or nylon bag. This one has an antimicrobial vinyl coating that not only provides water resistance but also ensures easy cleaning.
One of the standout features of this bag is its size. It's perfect for holding all my gym clothes, sneakers, and even my favorite water bottle. I've been using it regularly since I got it, and it has shown no signs of wear and tear yet.
Speaking of which, the durability of this bag is another highlight. The 18.5 oz. antimicrobial vinyl coated nylon liner is not just water and tear-resistant, but it's also treated with BACshield, which ensures that mold, mildew, fungi, or bacteria don't get a chance to grow.
The Steeletex Gym Bag also comes with a couple of convenient pockets - one inside and one outside. These have been incredibly useful for keeping my belongings organized.
As for the design, the black leather hand grips add a touch of class to the overall aesthetic. Besides, the adjustable shoulder strap ensures comfort even during long gym sessions.
However, there's one thing that I would've appreciated more - if they had included a mesh or ventilated pocket for storing wet clothes or shoes separately. This would have made the bag even more versatile and useful.
But all in all, I've been thoroughly happy with my Steeletex Gym Bag. Its durability, size, and convenience make it an excellent companion for my daily gym visits. Plus, knowing that it's made in America by hardworking American craftsmen adds an extra layer of satisfaction to my purchase. Its lightweight design ensures easy portability, especially when combined with its adjustable shoulder strap. Plus, the simple yet elegant design pairs well with any outfit, whether you're dressing up or down.
However, there are some cons to consider. Some users reported issues with the quality of the bag, particularly the zipper which tends to jam often. The lack of compartments inside can also lead to a messy bag when overstuffed. However, considering its affordable price point and high ratings among users, these minor drawbacks seem overshadowed by the overall positive experience most reviewers have had with this bag.

I recently had the chance to try out the Sweetbriar Classic Weekender Duffel and I must say, it's been a game-changer for my travel needs. The moment I laid my eyes on its vintage-inspired canvas design with retro rucksack vibe, I knew this bag meant serious style.
One of the features that really stood out was its spacious interior. It comfortably fit all my essentials for a weekend getaway, including clothes, toiletries, and even some extras like a small travel pillow. Speaking of extras, the bag has several pockets both outside and inside, which are perfect for storing smaller items like wallets or keys.
Another thing I appreciated was how easy it was to clean. I'm known for being a bit clumsy, so accidents are inevitable. But with this duffel, a damp cloth was enough to wipe away any spills or stains.
However, there was one issue I encountered. The zipper closure, while sturdy and secure, was a bit tricky to navigate at times. It took me a few attempts to get it right, which felt a little frustrating.
All in all, I'm quite satisfied with the Sweetbriar Classic Weekender Duffel. It's stylish, practical, and well-built, making it an ideal choice for short trips or gym sessions. It's definitely worth considering if you're in the market for a new bag.

I've never been the type to travel lightly - I've always packed everything but the kitchen sink. But recently, I stumbled upon this MOLLYGAN Travel Duffel Bag, and I must say, my travel game just leveled up! The black exterior made it perfect for both genders, but what really caught my eye was the superior-quality, soft and smooth canvas material.
The structure of this bag is quite impressive too. The side zipper pocket provided a separate space for my shoes (goodbye, smelly gym bag! ) whereas the spacious main compartment and small zipper pocket proved that even though the bag was large in capacity, it was well-organized.
Its 35 liters capacity was more than enough to accommodate all my laptops, A4 books, clothes, and daily essentials. Whether going for a leisurely trip or a hectic gym session, this bag had my back. Measuring 18.8 x 10.2 x 11 inches, the bag was just the right size for convenience yet offered so much space.
However, the product did have one hiccup, the shoulder strap. It was long and adjustable, but at times, it felt a bit too long, and the handles could have been a tad longer, making it a little harder to carry around.
In conclusion, the MOLLYGAN Travel Duffel Bag has undoubtedly improved my daily travel experiences. With its large capacity, durable construction, and ample organization options, it has become a necessity for my daily activities. While it could do with a few adjustments (pun intended), it has nonetheless proven to be a reliable companion.

I recently embarked on a weekend getaway with just the Military Duffel Backpack in tow. The modern green color added a trendy touch to my outfit, and upon closer inspection, I could see that the canvas duffel was indeed made of high-quality, water-repellent material. I felt confident that my belongings were well-protected, even in a sudden downpour. The adjustable shoulder straps came in handy as I traversed through the crowded city streets, allowing me to find the perfect fit and distributing the weight of my stuff evenly.
One feature I particularly appreciated was the heavy-duty cross-stitched carrying handle. I found it incredibly useful when I wanted to switch up my carrying style and convert the backpack into a traditional duffel bag. The stainless eyelets and rugged buckles made the whole process incredibly smooth and secure.
However, I did encounter a minor issue with the top clasp that held everything closed. It was slightly smaller than the holes on the flaps, so the bag wasn't completely sealed. While this didn't affect its overall performance during my trip, I did have to exercise a bit more caution to prevent anything from slipping out.
To sum it up, the Military Duffel Backpack is a reliable and fashionable bag that offers ample space and thoughtful storage options. The canvas material ensures durability and water resistance, while the adjustable straps offer comfort and convenience. Although the top clasp could be slightly improved, I would definitely recommend this backpack for travelers and everyday adventurers alike!

Plus, for every unit sold, Kindfolk donates $1 to FITS STANDARD, a charity that helps end slavery worldwide.
However, one of the cons I noticed is that the straps could be slightly longer. While it's not a deal-breaker for me, it can be a bit cumbersome when carrying it on top of everything else.

2024.05.19 06:46 Joebidens1braincell PHGG Vs. Prokinetic for SIBO?

This question is mainly out of personal interest and I will briefly mention my situation for context. I developed "IBS-D" after a bout of Camplyobacter in 2017. To the best of my knowledge I didn't have SIBO, I did a breath test and was negative back then. Recently after getting covid my motility shattered into a million pieces I stopped passing stool for days. I began taking PHGG and it helped SIGNIFIGANTLY. I was able to pass stools daily again and many gut-related and post covid symptoms became more maneagable.
Flash forward 6 months I see a naturopath, I begin probiotics, I take a SIBO test and have a very very mild positive test for IMO (I only tested IMO and Hydrogen SIBO not sulphide). I take herbal antimicrobials "candibactin ar and br" for three months and find some benefit. flash forward another 10 months (I've continued probiotics and prebiotics during this period) I retest my SIBO as my gut is worsening again. Now I have a much more advanced IMO and a Hydrogen positive result (results attached in this post for reference). I now know for a fact probiotics were a terrible idea and definetly influenced the development of my current situation, they have been tossed.
I am currently on the candibactins again for a 3 month treatment (1 month in and not noticing a signifigant improvement) and am toying with the idea of dropping PHGG and adding a prokinetic (to maintain my motility and stop feeding the bacteria). PHGG can feed both good and bad bacteria from what i've read, so would this not interfere with my antimicrobial treatment? My naturopath says to keep taking it if it helps but the meathead is the one who also advised me to take probiotics after a positive SIBO test.... Additionally, I am considering adding acillin to my stack to better treat my methane overgrowth as reccomended on the centre for SIBO testing website. What are your thoughts on my assessment of the situation and what would you do differently or add? Cheers!

What the HECK is this yellow/white goo stuff? Looks like small worms are (feeding, growing, living?) from it?
For context:
I had a single slug added to my terrarium which reproduced and had multiple babies. Fast forward 10 days and I come back to this abomination. No slugs are visible anymore.
I think it might be the dead slug but I have no way of knowing since Google doesn’t help when I look up “decomposing slug” 🫤
Any thoughts?

Any help with water
Hello I’m new to fish but I’m excited to have a few tanks with healthy fish. So far I have one nice established healthy tank with good parameters.
My problems started with my second tank, 20gal. I used cycled water from my first tank to start it and waited about two weeks to add fish. I have a betta and two platys in there with a water sprite, a few other live plants and a bubbler.
My water is super cloudy/green. At first my nitrites were too high and I added beneficial bacteria and those came down. I have 0 ammonia and nitrites but also 0 nitrates. And for some reason my pH went from 7.0-7.2 to now 8.0-8.2. And it’s still super cloudy.
I’ve been doing 10% water changes that helped the nitrites come down and I cleaned the gravel recently but I’m not sure what else to do. Any advice would be amazing.

2024.05.19 05:29 Try1ng-my-best Hello I need help cause I have no idea what to do?

So I have one established tank that is thriving with good parameters and I got a second tank. I used my cycled water from my first tank, let that sit for about a week or two before I put fish in it.
It’s been about three weeks now and I have a betta and two platys and I’m struggling with my cloudy green water.
Beforehand my nitrites were out of control with no ammonia and nitrates so I added beneficial bacteria and it brought the nitrites down to almost nothing. No ammonia but also no nitrated. Water still super cloudy.
Now my pH is around 8-8.2 when it was originally around 7.2-7.4.
So I’m not really sure what to do at this point.
I’ve been doing the 10% water changes to help the nitrites decrease and I’m making sure to condition the water.
I’ve even tried using a carbon filter next to my original filter and a clarifier and nothing has worked.
Please help.

Please help: bladder pain/reoccurring UTI
Posted with my partners consent and enthusiasm for potential answers. Also created a new account to post this for privacy concerns. So my 32m girl friend 27f and I have been together for almost a year now. She has been struggling the last 10 months with repeating bladder pain, interstitial cystitis, yeast infections, and overall discomfort with her intimate areas. I Feel this is at this time we became intimate, but she denies it is because of me. So much so that she has made multiple emergency room visits (she’s a tough little lady) and countless appointments with urologists and main practitioner from pain. Her health is a major issue for herself, but it also pains me physically and emotionally to see her in so much discomfort, pain, and exhaustion from endless disappointing results. I am just a regular working guy so I really have no clue what to do other than to turn to others who are helpful, knowledgeable, and caring. Once again I’m listing these conditions and medications with consent and help from my partner. Per my partner after asking for complete symptoms. “The bladder problems started after I got the second UTI where I ended up in the hospital in August. This was also when I started getting yeast infections. The bladder problems became severe after they put me on Flagyl for Bacterial Vaginosis at the end of January. I stopped taking the birth control around the 12th of last month. I’m having pelvic discomfort, nausea, headaches, bladder spasms, recurring yeast infections, vaginal dermatitis (I think from the yeast infections), and bladder discomfort. I’m taking Wellbutrin, Buspar, and I started taking Urogesic Blue to help with the bladder pain, but I think it might be causing the nausea and headaches. I’m also on nitrofurantoin for the next five days for the UTI. I take quite a few supplements: fish oil, cranberry, Vitamin D, Folic acid, and probiotics” We have both noticed that each time she has an issue the determined prescription is antibiotics, but the antibiotics always cause yeast infections and bladder pain. We have both been checked for std and Sti near the beginning of our relationship when we both knew we were forever, and wanted to become intimate. So that is out of the question. We switched to wearing condoms when her discomforts started to arise and become consistent. I began to genuinely believe it was me causing the issues, and I still do. We have resorted to wearing sterile gloves when we want to become intimate with my hands during foreplay. I used to really love doing oral on her and have restrained myself for fear of injuring her long term with mouth bacteria(I don’t know, just trying here). She also cleans after each time we are passionate with each other. I love this woman with my entire heart and soul. I will marry this woman. I will care for her always. I want her to be healthy, happy, and not stressing over if she is going to have another episode. Please help with anything you can. She will take all things to her doctor for testing or insight. If you have made it this far, from the both of us, thank you.

2024.05.19 03:36 specky_hotdog Please help me unshit my dog??

Please help me unshit my dog??
I have searched this forum and online in general and I’m not finding any specific answers for my unfortunate situation. Thank you so much if you take the time to help me!
Apparently my dog found an old, decrepit, decomposing dog bag while on our walk. It all happened too fast, he burst it open and rolled in in within 10 seconds. I can’t even describe the smell I’m dealing with here. It’s unbelievable how bad he reeks.
He has only been to a groomer once before but he’s a rescue out of abuse and he bit the groomer on the hand so I don’t dare bring him back and risk another injury to a groomer. That was years ago when I first rescued him but I haven’t risked it again. He allows me to bathe him so I think I have to handle it on my own. He has medium hair (he’s an Aussie shepherd mutt).
I have tried Burt’s bees dog shampoo. That did nothing. Then I tried regular bar soap (the kind with lye, i figured it’s stronger) and I got really deep in there all over. That took out some smell out but were still not there yet. Is there some mega stink shampoo I need to know about? I have been reading about skunk smell solutions, is that something to try in this situation? Please tell me what to buy.
This isn’t even a regular poop smell. It’s unbearable. It’s haunting my memory even now while he’s in kennel for bed.
(Isn’t Willy handsome??)

2024.05.19 03:02 Development-Feisty Cat is wheezing- took her to the vet. Was I wrong…

Cat is wheezing- took her to the vet. Was I wrong…
TL:DR- spent $500 for the vet to not tell me why my cat is wheezing but instead tells me that there’s a high level of bacteria in her urine and to come and pick up the prescription for her. When I get there the vet does not help me and they charge me $90 so I ask for the prescription but instead of giving me the prescription they tell me to just order through chewy. Am I right in being upset at this treatment?
  1. senior cat is wheezing and scratching.
  2. Took her to the vet and spent $500 for an examination, a blood panel, and a flea treatment.
    1. The vet texts me that she has a high-level of bacteria in her urine, I don’t know how much because they have not actually shown me the results of the blood panel
  3. I ask for the prescription so that I can get the antibiotic they text me to come in and pick up the medicine without disclosing the cost
  4. Receptionist brings out the medicine and charges me $90. The vet does not come out to tell me how to administer the medication, or to give me any explanation for what’s going on with my cat.
  5. I find out the medicine only costs $25 online so I return the medicine and request a prescription that I can get filled somewhere else,
  6. they don’t give me a prescription
  7. they have me order through chewy
Chewy is going to take several days to get this to me and they use FedEx who does not deliver to my apartment complex so I’m going to have to arrange to go to a FedEx center that is up to 20 minutes away from my house to pick up the medicine
  1. Am I right in being upset?
I still don’t know why she’s wheezing
Conclusion-
I’m in tears right now because all I wanted was the prescription so that I could fill it at the pharmacy of my choice.
I understand that vets make money off of prescribing, but I would assume that the $380 I paid for the blood panel would be enough money for them to at the very least spend five minutes on the phone with me explaining what prescription she needs, how dire the situation is, and how much they’re going to charge me for the prescription being filled with them
The common argument I see for vets charging so much more for prescriptions is it offsets the cost of them diagnosing your cat and explaining to you how to treat it. I would assume the $380 for in house testing included a diagnostic fee and they have spent no time explaining to me what is wrong with my cat or what to look for to make sure she’s not suddenly getting worse in the meantime
But am I wrong? Should I have given them $90 for a $25 prescription so that I could have it for my cat right away?
She has no signs of a urinary tract infection, she isn’t crying out, she’s peeing the same amount she’s always peed, she’s drinking the same amount of water that she’s always been drinking, she doesn’t seem to have any problems
The problem is the wheezing which the vet basically just said I guess she wheezes now
I feel like I paid for top shelf veterinary care and the aftercare is not commiserate with what I paid for.

I wrote a fight for this MU a few years ago and, after some edits, thought I'd post it here.
Never once had Fisk tower been as filled with laughter as it had been now. Corpses of guards turned maniacs littered the halls, blood covered glass from broken windows and burn marks of bullets painted the perfect crime scene. The calling card of The Joker.
Over the news helicopter’s and police sirens, Joker’s footsteps could just barely be heard. But what the one remaining soul could certainly hear, was knife dragging across the wall like nails on a chalkboard and the maniacal cackle of the clown outside the doors. And when those doors opened, the sickest met the strongest.
Fisk held the phone up to his ear.
"Don’t wait out for me. This may be a minute."
Joker couldn’t help but begin his signature laugh.
"Wilson! I'm...so excited to see you!"
"Was Gotham uneventful today? Metropolis not your fancy? You've picked a poor spot to claim your territory."
Joker dragged his blood covered finger up his decomposing face, forming an all but perfect excuse for a smile. Fisk straightened his black suit and cleared his throat. Joker let a crazed grin spread to his ears. Fisk kept a stone-face while he walked around his desk.
"Ooh!! Feeling daring today?"
"If anyone is going to spill the first blood of battle, I want it to be you."
Joker sneered at the excitement, swiftly swiping his knife across his teeth before running at Fisk. Most would be frightened out of their mind, but Fisk barely flinched at the sight. And when Joker stabbed his blade below Fisk’s eye, not a drop of blood slipped out. One second, Joker stood confused at his lack of affect. The next, Fisk had clenched his fist around Joker’s wrist.
"Not. Impressed."
With a grunt, Fisk leaned his head back, and slammed it into Joker’s. Joker slid across the floor now with throbbing head pain. But he had to roll away quickly to evade Fisk trying to stomp on him. But even as Joker rolled away, Fisk’s heavy footsteps followed him.
Joker picked his moment to rise to his knees, just missing a punch from Fisk. He quickly pulled a rusty crowbar from his jacket and struck Fisk’s ribs with it. Fisk threw his arm out to the side, sending Joker crashing into a stone pillar.
Fisk straitened his tie as Joker got himself together. Joker made haste swiping the gun from his waist and firing off a shot at Fisk. The sound of a Bang filled the room. Before the sound finished echoing, Fisk already had his fist held out in front of him. Unlike Joker had planned, Fisk caught the bullet.
"I’ve seen the trick time and time again, clown."
The pain in Fisk’s hand confused him. As he unclenched his fist, he saw that the bullet had driven itself into Fisk’s palm, faint blood flowed through the creases in his hand. Fisk didn’t let it bother him, he simply squeezed the bullet with two fingers and pulled it out.
He stood there examining the bullet as Joker dashed at him with his hands wide open. Joker wrapped his hands around Fisk’s fat neck, but instead of panicking, Fisk kept a straight face and nailed the bullet into Joker’s forehead. Like the madman he was, Joker ignored the pain and threw his leg up in a style similar to an axe kick. Fisk certainly felt that blow as he stumbled back with a shattered, bleeding nose. Fisk had dropped his guard, Joker noticed this and began swinging his crowbar across Fisk’s chest. Every hit connected, the rotted metal smashed rib after rib every time it struck its target.
Fisk threw his leg forward, launching Joker like a football across the room. By some miracle, the window didn’t shatter when Joker slammed into it, but countless cracks formed across it. As Joker opened his eyes, he felt a powerful grip around his neck. He knew Fisk’s intentions when he noticed his fist pulled back. Fisk was about to punch him through the window to a great fall to his death. Joker thought fast, he knew one thing: Everyone has a weak spot. He didn’t hesitate to drive his knife into Fisk’s right eye. Just as he thought, Fisk’s squishy eyeball wasn’t as invincible as the rest of body. Fisk let out a roar of agony as he threw Joker headfirst into the floor behind him.
Joker pulled himself from the broken tiles to look back at Fisk. The giant man was still tending to the sharp metal in his eye socket. With a devilish grin, Joker shouted,
"Goodness, Wilson! You’d ought to keep your head up!"
Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang Every bullet Joker’s gun could hold fired into Fisk’s body. With a knife in his eye, Fisk could only do so much to block. But as most guns do, Joker’s gun had gone through all it’s ammunition and Joker had to reload. Faster than Joker could slip the fresh bullets in, Fisk charged and shoulder bashed him. For just a short moment, Joker was off his feet, before Fisk clenched a fist around Joker’s leg and with all his might, slammed his frail body into the ground. With that, the floor below them fell apart.
They crashed onto the long tabel of a board room. Fisk got up onto his knee and looked to his right. Joker was pressing his hand on his back and pulling splinters out of his bicep. Fisk stood up and yanked the knife from his eye.
"You’re death won’t be in vain, Joker." Fisk said staring at the knife, "However, I do hope it strips your henchmen of whatever of their pride remains."
"Hey, what’s that supposed to mean? Are your men proud of working for a walking marshmallow?"
The smile had faded from his face. In it’s place was an ugly snarl, having taken offense to Fisk’s comment. Before he could get a response, Fisk dashed across the room and punched Joker into the wall. He then sent the knife into Joker’s hand, nailing him to the wall.
"No! They need to know whose world this is! And after I crush you they'll-"
Joker used his free hand to swing his crowbar into Fisk’s groin. He had once again proved himself right that everyone had a weak spot. To get his hand free, Joker extended his arm out with all the might he could muster up. His knife was still sticking out the back of his hand, but Joker wouldn’t let it bother him. What did bother him, was what felt like a sledgehammer smashing his abdomen.
A stream of vomit flew from Joker’s mouth as Fisk pulled his fist away and squeezed Joker’s neck.
"Now....I'LL BREAK YOU!!!"
Infuriated, Fisk choke slammed him. He held onto Joker’s neck tightly and began charging through every wall in his path, he tore apart the building without concern for himself, nor Joker. Fisk’s rampage only came to an end when he ran headfirst into the boiler room. The tank exploded, with Joker and Fisk in front of it.
Fisk grunted as he tried to stand after the impact. He smacked the fire on his clothes to put it out. Smoke filled his lungs with every breath. It didn’t take a genius to know that the upper half of the tower was had been set ablaze by the explosion. Fisk wiped dust from his forehead. He looked around at the aftermath, wondering what happened to Joker. Had he been reduced to ashes? Was he nothing but a gross red smudge on the walls? Or was he hiding in the dark smoke, throwing a gas canister at his head?
If you guessed the last one, you’d be right. Fisk fell to his hands and knees after the canister flew into his head. His ears ringing and his temples throbbing, he could just barely hear a maniacal voice shout,
"Wakey, wakey!"
Fisk looked to his left. Hidden in the black smoke sat the silhouette of the Joker. Resting on his shoulder was a rocket launcher. The missle fired immediately, and pulverized the floor, the walls, the building began to crumble. The police and the fire brigade had arrived at the exact time as Joker fired his blast. Just in time to see Fisk Tower fall apart right in front of them. Citizens all screamed in horror at the sight. A humongous cloud of dust and smoke surrounded what once was Fisk Tower. Officers and firefighters got closer to the destruction, unaware of the lunatic still living. Laughter filled their ears as the clown’s silhouette danced out of the smoke. When he escaped the aftermath, Joker took a bow, as if the boast. As if to say,
"Yeah, that’s right. I blew up Fisk Tower. What’re ya gonna do about it?"
Suddenly, a second silhouette appeared behind him. His to reduced to a rag, Fisk was alive and angry. He slammed his fists into the sides of Joker’s head, blood squirted out of his ears. Joker spun around, and the giant mans hand gripped part of his face that was loose. In one swift motion, Fisk ripped Joker’s rotting face from his head. But he wasn’t done, he had to solidify that he was in a different leauge than Joker, so he quickly threw a punch into Joker’s mouth, ruining his smile by sending teeth into the back of his throat.
Joker fell backwards, and looked up at Fisk raising his fists above his head. With a roar, Fisk dropped onto his kneed and brung his fists down on Joker’s head. The crowd fell silent from the deafening crunch, but Fisk had rage everlasting burning inside him. He just didn’t stop bringing his fists down on Joker’s head, yelling,
"DIE! DIE! DIE!! DIE, YOU PIECE OF SHIT!!!"
Fisk was breathing heavily after he finished his assault. He sluggishly rose to his feet, relishing in glory. Below him, was once a head, but now it was only a messy, disgusting pile of meat and pale flesh.

2024.05.19 02:47 JorgeGodoy Goal tracking with Obsidian

Based on this post, I've created an expanded version within my vault, that describe my process, and that I wanted sharing as a post. I hope it helps.

Goal tracking with Obsidian

Tracking goals with Obsidian can be done with a quite simple process.
First, best practices for goal tracking should be followed and this implies on using the SMART process for goal definition:

The process

  1. Decompose your goal into actions.
  2. Assign dates to deliver the end result of those actions.
  3. Measure progress on each action.
  4. Correct course if you deviate from the target date.
  5. If the goal is not relevant anymore, abandon it quickly.

Structure

Structure your goals into notes, for example, and create tasks with start and end dates. As usual, the Tasks plugin should be used.
Execute these tasks and add comments for progress, difficulties, and why you're rescheduling something. Remember that each task can have its own note, if it has a link in its description.
If you reschedule a goal / task, you have to justify it to yourself, in written and clear words, for any change you make. This will help keep you on track and not reschedule things all the time.
You can track progress with Dataview or with Tasks queries, and when the task disappears it is over (delivered, canceled, reprioritized).

2024.05.19 01:35 pururun_kyupi UTI flaring up again

I had a persistent UTI for 7 months. Urine tests were normally negative, except for some blood outside of my period. But in November and April they found the same bacteria, Enterobacter aerogenes. My new family doctor recommended me a herbal medication that is supposed to work similiar to antibiotics but without causing gut issues. And it really worked after taking it consistently for a week. It started itching all around and even the weird discharge I had coming from my vagina stopped. No more pains or anything like it for a month since then. Now after taking an iron supplement for 3 days with a bunch of artificial sweeteners it’s flaring up again. I’m guessing it build biofilms which keep some of the bacteria in my urethra. The question is, how do I completely get rid of the biofilms? My urologist is not helpful and doesn’t wanna evaluate me further. My best bet is my gynecologist but what can they do? How can they identify the biofilm? Perhaps some biopsie of the matter in the urethra but who is specialized for that? Can my gynecologist do that?

2024.05.19 01:13 Gildedfilth My experience with a Calyceal Diverticulum

I am in recovery from my ureteroscopy on a calyceal diverticulum, and while I found some journal articles and a few stray posts on here about them, I want to paint a bigger picture about my actual experience and what I felt.
This is a very long post because I wanted to err on the side of more information so that other may feel much less alone than I have felt. I have included subheadings so you can read only what is useful to you.
To start, I am a 31-year-old female with endometriosis (I explain the implications of that in one of my subsections.). I live in New York City and was operated on by a surgeon at Smith Institute for Urology at Lenox Hill Hospital, which specializes in “complex anatomy” and kidney stones.
TL;DR Calyceal diverticula are pockets on the kidneys affecting 0.5% of the population. Stones can form and get trapped due to their narrow opening (infundibulum). As a result, their pain pattern is different and diagnosis can be delayed. To resolve the problem, you will need a surgeon to remove stones and expand the opening and/or ablate the lining of the diverticulum via ureteroscopy or percutaneous nephrolithotomy.
What is a calyceal diverticulum?
For a good scientific review of what calyceal (kay-luh-SEE-uhl) diverticula are, there is a review study from 2014 with primary author Nikhil Waingankar. In short, these are pockets within the kidneys that have much narrower entry points (“infundibula”) than a normal calyx, and they are theorized to only occur in 0.5% of the human population, with an estimated 96% of those who have them forming stones inside them.
They are often found incidentally on imaging because many people remain asymptomatic. In my case, we saw “a cyst requiring further imaging to rule out neoplasm” (cancer) when I was having my appendectomy in 2022 and had a CT scan in the ER.
They will look like cysts until you either get a radiologist who knows what to look for and sees a stone inside, or until you do a CT urogram, which is a more involved CT scan where you can see if the urinary system communicates with the “cyst.” Simple cysts and neoplasms will not show urine entering the mass; a calyceal diverticulum will, because it has an entrance.
Important stipulation in my experience: endometriosis and its surgeries
My story is complicated by the fact that I have endometriosis, which is a disease wherein cells resembling uterine cells occur outside the uterus. This is an extraordinarily painful condition that causes widespread inflammation due to the uterus-like cells’ having “menstrual periods” outside the uterus. It that can occur anywhere in the body; while most people’s disease presents primarily in the ovaries, uterus, and Fallopian tubes, the disease has been found in every organ in the body. In my case, my disease was confirmed to be extrapelvic as soon as my appendix pathology report revealed that my appendix had endometriosis on it; the cells existed beyond the typical pelvic organs.
I have already had two laparoscopies for endometriosis, and while these were immensely helpful in restoring my quality of life, every abdominal surgery comes with the risk of adhesions. Adhesions are bands of tissue that the body forms when it experiences inflammation or trauma. Endometriosis forms adhesions by itself, and surgery to remove it risks further adhesions. In 2020, when I had my radical excision surgery, my surgeon had to perform ureterolysis to cut my ureters free: whether from previous surgery in 2016 or the disease, my ureters were stuck to my uterus due to adhesions.
I share this because having endometriosis and its surgeries in my history affected my path to diagnosis and probably my pain pattern. (Endometriosis forms its own nerve endings, too!) But for the record, the kidney stones and the kidney surgery in my case were more painful than endometriosis…probably because they freaked out any remaining endometriosis.
(Sorry for no source on this endometriosis information. I am unfortunately very well-read on the disease! If you want to learn more, I recommend The Center for Endometriosis Care website and the book Beating Endo.)
What did the calyceal diverticulum feel like at first?
On a Tuesday in January 2024, I was trialing prazosin, an alpha blocker related to Flomax (tamsulosin) due to PTSD nightmares.
One day after taking this drug, I woke up with 8/10 pain muscle spasms in my “iliac crest,” which is the top edge of my pelvis, on the right side. I thought I had “slept funny” and the pain subsided after about 3 hours. I tried to roll around on a lacrosse ball, thinking it was a muscle spasm.
I took the prazosin for two more days. By that Thursday, the pain lasted more like 6 hours and did not go away; I had the muscle spasms as well as a feeling that there was “trapped gas” right at my waist, right on the side of my body. Because the pain stayed at 8/10, nothing would calm it down, and I couldn’t focus on work, I went to the ER. We did a CT scan and saw nothing different from my last CT for my appendectomy. They decided it was probably a kidney infection with strange presentation due to my endometriosis and sent me home with cefpodoxime, an antibiotic.
I finished the course of the antibiotic over 7 days and felt better.
But then the “trapped gas” feeling returned and lasted 18 hours. I went back to the ER, mostly concerned that I had failed antibiotics and the “infection” was getting worse. I made a urologist appointment while I was waiting in the ER because I suspected this might be beyond their mandate of ruling out anything life-threatening. We did another CT, and this time I really carefully read the results: inside what we had identified as a calyceal diverticulum in 2022 during my appendectomy CT scan were two kidney stones, each about 0.2mm. Because there was not much change from my last ER visit, the doctor at the ER did not think this explained how I was feeling. He did not want to send me home with antibiotics because he thought his colleagues were too cavalier with testing, but he did send for a urine culture and sent me home at least assured there was no emergency.
The culture came back, and I did test positive for E. Faecalis, which is a rarer bacteria to have, so the doctor at the ER urged me to get on Levaquin, an antibiotic, as soon as possible. (My endourologist later theorized this bacterium was an incidental finding; he thinks I just happened to be colonized with it and it was not causing symptoms. Regardless, it was not present in my culture before surgery.)
Again, I took almost the full course of the antibiotic and was feeling better and safer. I also saw a urologist, and she was skeptical it was an infection but told me to continue the course. She was pretty sure it was endometriosis-related but saw that I had seen my gynecologist, who has been treating me for 5 years, days prior who was pretty sure this was NOT consistent with what she had seen when we operated in 2020. The urologist said she felt this might be beyond her skills and referred me to one of her medical school colleagues who is a specialist in “complex anatomy” like calyceal diverticula as an endourologist professor at Lenox Hill in NYC.
But before I could see the endourologist, only one week after my last ER visit, I was in 9/10 pain for 7 hours overnight. I really did not want to go to the ER again, but I was vomiting, sweating, using the bathroom (both ways) constantly. After 7 hours not being able to get it to calm down, I went back to the ER.
The first thing they did was test me for sepsis, because I was being treated for an infection. They also did a CT scan again and then we saw it: one of the kidney stones had left the calyceal diverticulum and was stuck in the ureterovesicular junction (“UVJ”). By the time I was diagnosed, I was in 9/10 pain for 18 hours, so what we now know to be the renal colic phase lasted for 18 hours. They admitted me overnight to the hospital to observe and had me on ketorolac (Toradol) and oxycodone/acetaminophen (Percocet) every 6 hours alternating. The pain subsided the next morning.
Confirmation and surgery
Luckily, I had the endourologist appointment on the books already, and I got all of my images from the ER to bring to this doctor, letting him know I was confirmed to have passed the stone.
What he was able to do for me I will never forget: he showed me exactly why I was in enough pain for the ER each of the three weeks I went. Unlike a normal stone situation, a stone in a calyceal diverticulum has far more opportunities to get stuck. Also unlike a normal stone, you can feel the stone passing before it reaches the ureter because it has to leave via the narrow opening of the diverticulum. This means the pain can feel different and, due to its location within the kidney is more prone to being referred pain (pain you feel in a place other than where it originates). This is why I did not feel the pain in the classic place and why it felt much more like trapped gas. Furthermore, most radiologists do not have the same training as he did to identify where in the opening the stone was, which explained why they believed the stone was in the same place each time.
We wanted to take a “wait and see” approach on the second stone, but my body did not want to wait. As I was falling asleep one night in early March 2024, I felt that familiar “trapped gas” feeling, way too far right to be my intestines. This is 6/10 pain, so I could go to work for an important meeting, but I called to get an ultrasound and appointment right away. (We have since found that for my specific diverticulum, ultrasounds are not useful. I will need a CT urogram any time we want to visualize the kidney post-op.)
My doctor said that he wanted to attempt ureteroscopy before percutaneous nephrolithotomy because it is a less-invasive modality and we were worried about impacting any endometriosis. He had me sign paperwork consenting to either method, and it was a “game time” decision based on what he saw with the camera.
In the two-and-half week wait til surgery, his hypothesis gained traction: I would have days “on” with the pain and “off,” suggesting the stone was able to enter the diverticular opening and then flow back into the diverticulum. When I was in pain this time, I would also feel a lot of fatigue and brain fog that made it hard to work. This could be consistent with a kidney blockage, but it is hard to say for sure with an area so small.
The surgery, the stent, and the pain after the stent
The surgery itself went pretty well and only lasted 1.5 hours. The surgeon let me know that it was not easy to get into the diverticulum because the opening was not straight, as expected. He was, however, able to complete the surgery with only ureteroscopy. He removed a 0.2mm stone and observed that the stone was exactly the width of the opening, meaning it could absolutely flow into and out of it and get stuck for days. He widened the opening with laser to be “wider than a normal calyx” to allow for scarring, and, at my request to avoid further operations, ablated as much of the lining of the diverticulum as he could, encouraging it to close up.
While the surgery was uneventful, I am one of the unlucky ones who cannot tolerate a stent. This is probably due to my endometriosis, which leaves me in a heightened baseline of inflammation and nerve arousal, as well as the fact that, for me, the stent had to go into the diverticulum, which had been lasered and burned, in order for it to heal. I spent four hours in the recovery room while we tried to get my pain down to my goal of 7, which meant we needed to dose me, as we did in the ER, with ketorolac (Toradol) and oxycodone every 6 hours with no gaps in between.
I only had the stent in for 3 full days, and unfortunately, due to my specific circumstances, that was the worst pain I have ever been in. I was agnostic about 10/10 pain until this time, in which I felt like I was passing a stone and experiencing my worst endometriosis cramps at the same time. I was in 8-10/10 pain despite the painkiller regimen, and since we found that dilaudid does not work for me, this was good as they could do for me.
Thankfully, my surgeon listened to my experience and agreed to take the stent out as soon as was responsible: 72 hours later. The actual removal was uncomfortable but not painful beyond a “scrape” sensation in the urethra, and as soon as it was out, my husband noticed I could move as normal and was talking more like myself.
However, 1 out of 4 people will experience pain after the stent is removed, and risk factors include female anatomy, being “younger” (I am 31.) and having a stent in for less than or equal to 7 days.
The day of the removal I had some muscle spasms but was mostly so relieved that I slept all day.
34 hours after the removal, I experienced a feeling like I was passing a kidney stone. I was in 9/10 pain for 6 hours, feeling like I needed to move my bowels (which was not easy after opioids!) and having unrelenting spasms above my right iliac crest (top of pelvis). I was on ketorolac (Toradol) during this and knew what it was, but I otherwise may have gone back to the ER. I refused to take more opioids because my bowel was upset as well.
Today, I have had one episode of the iliac crest muscle spasms lasting an hour. I have found that crouching on the floor, against a wall, and/or going into “reclined butterfly pose” may help. It may just make me feel like I have more control over the situation.
I will update this post if I feel more pain in the coming days.
What’s next?
My endourologist/surgeon thinks it is very unlikely that I am “a stone-former” because the stones were only in the diverticulum and likely formed due to the urine reflux of that structure.
We will follow up in 3 weeks to see if the sensation I felt in March of the “trapped gas” recurs. If it does, only then would we do a CT urogram to see if the diverticular opening closer up to anywhere near its former width of 0.2mm.
This is unlikely because the surgeon lasered the opening very wide, “wider than a normal calyx,” to allow for scarring to take place. The ablation of the lining of the diverticulum should also take care of its tendency to collect urine.
I am not expected to have further stones or need for surgery, but he has seen cases of recurrence, so we need to manage my expectations.
Despite the extreme pain of the stent, I am content with my decision and hope that I do not have to go through this again. The one blessing in my case is, if this surgery succeeds, I should not have any further kidney stones.

2024.05.19 00:06 daberluck Beginning my journey - Tray 1

Beginning my journey - Tray 1
Finally pulled the plug.
I have had crowded teeth and trouble with flossing and keeping my teeth clean for a long time now. Did not grow up with a lot of dental care since it was expensive and mostly out of reach. The end result was crowding, cavities, non-ideal dental hygiene and general dissatisfaction with my smile.
Then developed a major cavity which had to go through a root canal. The root canal wasn't done well and over the years it kept seeping in food and bacteria due to which I ended up losing that tooth on the back of my lower jaw.
So here I was with crooked teeth, difficulty flossing, lack of confidence and a missing tooth.
Met my dentist who spoke to me about Invisalign and it got me intrigued. Did a bunch of research and went in for an exam. Ortho came back with the suggestion that there might be a slim chance that I could not only straighten my teeth, remove crowding but also potentially reduce / remove the gap in my lower jaw teeth so much so that i might not need an implant. Not a common use case I was told but still within the margin of possibility.
Finally saved up enough and started my journey this week. I am posting a day 1 picture.
Current view after installation on day 1
As I start on this almost 2 year journey, a number of thoughts have been coming to my mind:
  • Did I start something that is more than what I can take?
  • Can I change my lifestyle so much?
  • What if the end results are nowhere close to what I want them to be?
  • Will my next 2 years be full of uncomfortable sensations and I will not be happy?
The more I read up online on this community, the more hope I get. Yes, nothing is guaranteed but this gives me a good shot. The day 1 sensation was a lot but now on day 2 its already a lot better. Even if it's not perfect, I hope to get my dental health moving in the right direction. In this case literally with my teeth moving.
My only main complaint right now is that the attachments on my teeth are still really sharp (only day 2) and they hurt like a MF when I chew. I am reading other people's experience and they all say it will smoothen out in some time which gives me hope.
I am likely just slowly going to move myself to an intermittent fasting schedule maybe to avoid having to take the trays out multiple times a day. Hoping this will also help me control my snacking habits. I will also keep an eye on issues that I have read around cavities and open bites. But I do realize not all is always going to be in my control.
Just wanted to write this post as a reflection, to share with this awesome community and also in part to track my progress and hopefully share my experience with someone who is in the same boat as me and is nervous excited to get started. Anxious but hopeful. Cautious but optimistic.
Thanks to everyone who participates here and I hope to learn and share more along my journey.
Peace.

2024.05.18 23:48 Melodic_Pin19 Personal story of BB and SIBO

I've had BB since about 6/7 years ago. My symptoms are a lot of saliva, very bad taste on my mouth and BB. This is specially triggered when I dont eat anything for 1/2 hours and on. The BB is only noticeable from a short distance, and I can smell it cause my saliva smells.
Over this time I've visited probably a dozen of doctors. Gastroenterologist, stomatologist, dentists, otolaryngologist and so on.
Gastroenterologist: First I was diagnosed with hiatus hernia from an endoscopy, later on, discarded by another one done by a better doctor. During this second time I had some bile in the stomach and mild gastroenteritis. I've taken all kind of omeprazoles with no effect, except one (not sure which one it was) that kind of change the taste I felt for some time.
Stomatologist: was given an oral antibiotics with not much explanation, which I took for some time and then stopped. I was unsure how to take it, or for how long since the doctor was not very explainatory. Again, nothing changed.
Dentist: My oral hygiene was not so good when I was younger, but of course over the last year it has become better, flossing every day, visiting a very good dentist very often. Used to have a very bad one. Had three root canals done and one crown. One other symptom is that I need a clean done very often, since bacteria accumulate regardless of the hygiene. Also over time I had to learn how to take care properly. This involves using a very soft brush, floss, waterpick, etc.
Otolaryngologist: Checked on me and sent me to visit one of these "integrative doctors" (dont know the proper term) but they usually cover many aspects, not just a speciality.
This last doctor ran a lot of blood tests and suggested a SIBO test (hydrogen and methane). I didn't follow the rules prior to the test (a mistake) but since the appointments were very difficult to get, I took it anyway. I got positive for methane SIBO and a constant but high hydrogen level. I took the treatment which involved antibiotics and a very stringent diet (plus a bunch of vitamins and other things). First day into the diet and symptoms got a lot worse since the lack of food (wheat derived, specially) was making me feel "unfull" and that's usually what triggers it. Three or four days into the treatment and the BB was gone entirely. I still had the excess saliva, and the bad taste just a little bit. But at least I could last 4/5 hours without eating and feeling this horrendous taste on my mouth. The change was amazing. I already finished the treatment one week ago and its been almost one entire month without BB. I assume the excess saliva is from a different source and it was probably making things worse. Of course I'll keep an eye on things since I know SIBO can make a comeback easily. I'll also keep some things I've learn from the diet. Super low sugar and try to avoid wheat (if anything, sourdough). Also get rid of sugary snacks like oreo and stuff.
I know my symptoms are different of what people usually describe here but hopefully it could help someone.

2024.05.18 23:40 Aggravating-Path9982 I just found out they actually found bacteria in urine

Got first uti 2 years ago and at first both uricultures were fine, they didnt found anything, antibiotics didn’t help ,although they relieve symptoms as soon as i stop them the symptoms worsen,so I thought i had pelvic floor dysfunction or something else because they never found anything and I found paper today from analysis from month ago that I didn’t read properly that says small amount of bacteria actually was found,I never did following urinoculture and I’m going to probably do that now ,so what should i do how to kill infection fully it always comes back ,normal antibiotics don’t fix it i feel like bacteria is kinda resistant to them i took them for 2 weeks max in the past, should i take them more than one month ? They always relieve the symptoms never completely fix it,also the symptoms are awfull now.

2024.05.18 23:02 felinucho Help with some bacteria and the B3Z cell line

Hey there, I've been working on my doctoral thesis (University of Chile), which basically studies regulatory B cells. To perform some experiments, I'm looking for help finding the bacteria E. coli strain mpk and B. fragilis ATCC 25285, as well as the B3Z hybridoma.
If anyone could please help me, I will be in San Francisco from June 17th to June 30th. I would take care of the rest to bring them back to my country.
Thank you!

2024.05.18 21:53 Available_Dream_7276 Last bits of flesh

Last bits of flesh
Anyone got tips for getting rid of these last bits of flesh? They're the bane of my existence, it's like they won't budge. I messed up when I first started maceration by doing it in soapy water so that hasn't helped but I've changed and tried adding bacteria to help but no luck. Hell what even is the success rate of macerating previously mummified finds?

2024.05.18 21:28 happyboisok001 Anyone know what this might be?? CW: graphic

(To preface: im gonna see a specialist about this but the doctors near me arent that good with trans and intersex care so it might be helpful if i have an idea of whats going on before i see the specialist. The last doctor i saw (gp, not specialist) had no clue what was going on and just referred me without being able to tell me what to expect. Im not asking for a diagnosis, but if anyone has experience with something similar, or has heard of a similar case, it would be great if you could share what the cause was so i can maybe bring it up as a suspicion my next doctors appointment.) Please let me know if this is not appropriate to post and i will take it down.
Im ftm, pre anything. For about a year ive had urinary symptoms that would usually be attributed to a UTI, but they tested for bacteria in my urine and found nothing unusual (the words they used were "mixed growth of doubtful significance"). They put me on antibiotics anyways (twice) and it didnt help. The symptoms ive had for a year are urinary retention and frequency, and straining to urinate. A urine test also found an unusual amount of rbc and wbc. An ultrasound didnt find any abnormal growths or structural issues in the bladder. HOWEVER, for as long as ive known, ive had multiple urine streams (usually 2, sometimes a third). I know it could be that it split later or something, but taking a look at it, the urine seems to either be coming from or very close to the vagina. Upon looking at it, it seems the reason for multiple streams is that the urine is coming from BEHIND the hymen (which afaik is not normal) which has a few openings in it. Also im not sure if this is normal, but surrounding the vagina/urethra complex thing is 2 flaps, almost like a tube (not the labia minora, they are WITHIN the labia minora). The clitoris appear to be a bit enlarged but not by a lot. Aside from this, i have hirsutism and ive been assumed to be a guy even before i socially transitioned and when i wore womens clothes. Ive also had gender dysphoria since at least around age 3 and there were no typical "explanations" (such as trauma, abuse, "lgbt influence") for me to have developed it so young, so i believe my biology played a huge role. I went through mostly typical female puberty but with no growth spurt, slightly lower voice, and a weird non cramp pain in my lower abdomen sometimes, pretty muscular for how little i work out, and irregular period length. I also have a very short and stocky build.
And aside from gender related things, i have EXTREMELY poor vision and arthritis since around age 7(doesnt run in the family), hyperflexible joints, a sacral dimple, and autism. I have very high cholesterol but normal glucose, blood pressure, and weight. According to my dentist, my dental age is very delayed (im almost 20 and have baby teeth, everyone else in the family lost theirs normally) and have suddenly grown about an inch and a half in the past year. Theres a few other things but idk if they are worth mentioning.
