2024.05.17 10:04 Ekocare On the Origin of the Buddhist Arthakathás (R. C. Childers, L. C. Vijasinha)

On the Origin of the Buddhist Arthakathás Cambridge University Press (1871)
"—the commentary, I say, upon this Scripture was
at the first Council rehearsed by five hundred holy elders
and in later times rehearsed again and yet again."
L. Comrilla Vijasinha, Government Interpreter to the Ratnapura Court Ceylon:
It must be admitted that the point raised by Mr. Childers is one of grave importance as affecting the credibility of Buddhaghosa and the authenticity of all the commentaries on the Tipitaka. From a missionary point of view, the astounding statement that a commentary on Buddha's discourses existed during his lifetime, and was rehearsed along with those discourses at the First Great Council, appears so improbable and unnatural as at once to justify one in discrediting the testimony; and I doubt not that missionary orientalists will hail the discovery as a valuable addition to their stock of arguments against the genuineness and authenticity of the Buddhist Scriptures.
Indeed I found it difficult at first to obtain the opinions of some of my learned friends of the Buddhist priesthood on this point, as they seemed to regard it as another thunderbolt intended to be levelled against their religion by some enthusiastic missionary ; and it was only after explaining to them the object of the inquiry, and the literary character of the gentleman who started the apparent difficulty, that I could induce them to look the question fairly in the face.
I am glad to say that most of my clerical Buddhist friends with whom I have consulted on this subject agree with me on the necessity of giving a wider and more extended signification than is generally allowed to the word Atthakathá as applied by Buddhaghosa in the passage cited. The word, as is well known, is compounded of two terms, attha, " meaning, " and katha , " a statement, explanation, or narrative," the dental t being changed to the cerebral by a latitude in the rules of permutation.1 The literal meaning of the compound term would thus amount to simply " an ex- planation of meaning. " Taking this wider sense of the word as a basis for the solution of the problem, I think the statement of Buddhaghosa in his preface to the commentary on the Dígha Nikáya is not so hopelessly irreconcilable with probable and presumable facts as would at first sight appear.
On a careful perusal of the two accounts given by Buddhaghosa of the proceedings of the three famous Councils in the Sumańgala Vilásiní and the Samanta Pásádiká, this view will, I think, be found to be very reasonable. It must be admitted that no actual commentary, in the sense that the westerns attach to that term, and like that which has been handed down to us by Buddhaghosa, existed either in the lifetime of Buddha or immediately after his death. The reasons adduced by Mr. Childers, apart from others that can easily be added, against such a supposition, are overwhelmingly convincing. But if we suppose that by the word Atthakathá in his preface Buddhaghosa only meant to convey the idea that at the various Councils held for the purpose of collocating the discourses and sayings of Buddha, the meanings to be attached to different terms were discussed and properly defined, then the difficulty of conceiving the contemporaneous existence pf the commentaries and the Pitakas would be entirely removed.
This view of the subject will appear still further borne out if we briefly glance over the history of the First Convocation, as narrated by Buddhaghosa himself. The first proposal to hold an assembly of priests for the purpose of collocating Buddha's discourses was made by Mahá Kassapa, the chief of the seven hundred thousand priests who assembled at Kusinára to celebrate the obsequies of the departed saint. Seven days had hardly elapsed after that mournful occurrence, when signs of discontent at monastic restraint manifested themselves, and a disaffected disciple of Buddha named Subhadda openly proclaimed that now their master was no more the ties of discipline should be relaxed, if not broken. The words of consolation offered by this old monk to his brethren in distress are certainly remarkable, as it would be difficult to say whether they betoken more the callousness of his feelings or the depravity of his heart: " Brethren, enough of this sorrow, weep not, lament not. We are well rid of that Arch-priest, having been in constant dread of his declarations, This befits you, this befits you not. Now, there- fore, what we desire we shall do; what we do not desire that shall we not do." To a sagacious mind like that of Mahá Kassapa it was not difficult to perceive what language like this foreshadowed, and he instantly formed the resolve to congregate the priesthood, and to collect and arrange the laws and doctrines proclaimed by his Master. Hardly two months had elapsed before this active mind brought about what it had contemplated, and the result was the Council of the Five Hundred, convoked at Kájagaha, under the auspices of King Ajátasattu, for the purpose of collecting and arrang- ing the doctrines and discourses of Buddha.
The proceedings of this Council appear to have been con- ducted in a very orderly and systematic manner, which is the more surprising when we consider that monastic autocracy was about to give place to a form of church government prescribed by the great Founder himself, but which was now to be established and tested for the first time. Mahá Kassapa, whom Buddha indirectly indicated as his equal in point of superhuman mental acquirements, assumed the office of Moderator, and by the unanimous consent of the synod Upáli was elected as the best qualified of their order to repeat the Yinaya, and Ānanda the Dhamma ; the Council having previously decided that the Yinaya was the most material for the permanence of Buddhism.
Now it is important to observe that the catechetical form was used in the collocation of both the Laws and Doctrines. "Afterwards Mahá Kassapa, having seated himself in the presidential chair, questioned the venerable Upáli respecting the Yinaya in this wise. Brother Upáli, where was the first Párájika promulgated? My lord, at Vesáli. On whose account? On account of Sudinna, the son of Kalanda. With regard to what offence? To fornication. Then did the venerable Mahá Kassapa question the venerable Upáli on the offence, the cause, the offender, the primary law, the secondary law, the transgression and the non-transgression, relating to the first law enacted against mortal sin. And the venerable Upáli explained as he was questioned." Such was also the method employed in the synod in the collocation of the Dhamma : - " Brother Ananda, where was the Brahmajála delivered ? My lord, between Rájagaha and Nálanda," and so on. Though it is subsequently added that " at the conclusion of the questions and answers the five hundred Arhats repeated the texts together in the order in which they had been collocated,"- it is difficult to believe that all' the five hundred rehearsed the long narratives prefixed to some of Buddha's discourses in the same words and style that they are now clothed in. Buddhaghosa's account of the synod is gathered from tradition, which was very probably embodied in the Simhalese atthakathás, and there can be little doubt that the main facts are correct ; but that he drew largely from tradition, written and oral, and possibly in some instances from imagination, will I think appear clear to any careful reader of the commentaries. Witness for instance his relation of Ananda's mysterious entrance into the assembly : pathaviyam nimujjitvá ottano árnne y em attánam dassesi , ákásena gantvá nisïdîti pi eke , " He plunged into the earth and showed himself in his seat, and also some say he went through the air and sat down." He does not say which version is correct, but is quite satisfied with both accounts, and is evidently quite willing to let his readers choose whichever they like.
Buddhaghosa throughout all his writings appears to have set one great object prominently in view, namely to inspire reverence for what he considered as supreme authority. When he came to Ceylon for the purpose of translating the Simhalese commentaries, he found a great many extant at that time, and out of these commentaries, embracing no doubt various shades of opinion, and representing different schools of thought, he had to expunge, abridge, enlarge, and make a new commentary. Now how could he do all this, and at the same time preserve undiminished among future generations the same reverence and authority in which the older commentaries were held by the Buddhists of that age? The thought struck him, as no doubt it would strike any careful reader of the Buddhist Scriptures, that a large portion of the writings contained in that canon appear to be explanations and definitions of terms used by Buddha, and also that a great many discourses said to have been delivered by Buddha to certain individuals have not been recorded.
Now what more easy to conceive, or what more probable, than that they formed the nucleus of matter for the formation of a commentary, and that at the First General Council, which lasted seven months, the elders, who had all seen and heard Buddha, should have dis- cussed them, and decided on the method of interpreting and teaching the more recondite portions of Buddhist philosophy ? and what therefore if he should say in somewhat exaggerated language, " the commentary on the Digha Nikáya was at the beginning discussed (or composed, or merged into the body of the Scriptures) by five hundred holy elders" ? - for the original words may admit of such a construction. If or will this opinion appear merely hypothetical if we carefully peruse the account given by Buddhaghosa of the commentaries in his Samanta Pásádiká. In his metrical introduction to that work, after the usual doxology, he explains the necessity of having a proper Pali Commentary on the Vinaya, and then proceeds to set forth what he is about to do : -
"In commencing this commentary, I shall, having embodied therein the Mahá Atthakathá, without excluding any proper meaning from the decisions contained in the Mahá Paccarí, as also in the famous Kurundi and other com- mentaries, and including the opinions of the Elders, - perform my task well. Let the young, the middle-aged, and the elderly priests, who entertain a proper regard for the doctrines of the Tathágata, the luminary of truth, listen to my words with pleasure. The Dhamma, as well as the Yinaya, was declared by Buddha, his (sacerdotal) sons understood it in the same sense as it was delivered ; and inasmuch as in former times they (the Simhalese commentators) composed the com- mentaries without disregarding their (the sacerdotal sons') opinions, therefore, barring any erro* of transcription, every- thing contained therein is an authority to the learned in this priesthood who respect ecclesiastical discipline. From these (Simhalese) commentaries, after casting off the language, condensing detailed accounts, including authoritative deci- sions, and without overstepping any Pàli idiom (I shall pro- ceed to compose). And as this commentary will moreover be explanatory of the meaning of words belonging. to the Suttas in conformity with the sense attached to them therein, therefore ought it the more diligently to be studied."

I know this is wholesome sub but sunno mohalle walo meri aap biti 😂
I have been a good academically and a decent person. I met so many good women in my life, too, whom I dated casually and had a few serious relationships. Except for two times, I exited those serious relationships very early because I didn’t feel anything, so we parted ways on good terms. But do baar mujhe pyaar hua. I will tell you about them only.
  1. This is my first love and someone I have known since my childhood. She was the daughter of a relative (I mean my bua’s relative, actually). She used to study at my school too. In high school, she chased me for a year, and finally, I gave in. We started dating; it was my first love, and I was happy. Kasme, waade, sapne bohot dekhe. I was a sort of grounded person; I live in the present and enjoy it thoroughly, but she was futuristic with lots of promises and future dreams. "I will have your kids, we will travel the world," blah blah. I did everything to keep her happy. I used to cook for her, I used to write poems for her, we used to go on dates often, and we traveled. But one fine day, I got an invitation to a wedding. Guess what? It was her wedding. I had so many questions: why, how, when? But I got no closure. I never asked for it. I went to the wedding because it was a family thing, and yeah, I never looked back (this was my longest relationship).
  2. After few years and meeting so many people, I fell in love again. To be honest, this time we fell for each other during the initial conversations. Again, there were dreams, sapne, waade. She moved to North America for me, and we moved together into a single house. By this time, I had become a pro at cooking, so I used to go to study, then the office, then back home to cook something delicious for us. I can cook any cuisine irrespective of the continent or country. Till now, I have learned many other skills like piano and guitar, so I used to sing for her, play for her, and we used to dance together. Everything was good; we had mutual friends, and we knew a guy mutually. That guy didn’t like me, and I didn’t like him. I did have a problem with things because my ex told me he does not like me. But I don’t own her; I don’t own anyone. Actually, anyone can do anything in their life.
So, one fine day, I got a video message. It was them doing the deeds. I was shocked and broken and didn’t understand a thing. I tried to gather courage and be rational. She came back and was trying to talk to me. Then I told her I wanted to break up. She asked me why, and I said I was out of love. She started crying and begging, saying that she loves me. Then she started accusing me and some of my other female friends, implying something was going on. She said, "You used to love me and now want to throw me out. Where would I go? I came here from India for you," and all that stuff. I tried to control myself, but then I gave in and showed her the video. Then she was like, "I am sorry, I love you a lot. You are my life; I want to marry you. He made me drunk and took advantage of me. Please forgive me." At that point, I firmly decided this was it. I told her she could stay till she found accommodation, then I went to my friend's home and stayed there for a few days. But she kept pursuing me. I canceled the lease and changed my house; still, she did the same thing. During this whole ordeal, I had to change my house twice and delete my Instagram, and finally, now I am free.
I don’t know why all this happened. I don’t know what else I could have done so that they didn’t do that to me. Maybe I was not a good partner. There could be any other reasons. But I don’t hold any grudges against them. I wish wherever they are, they are happy.
These experiences were very important for me; they made me who I am today. I don't hold anything against anyone. These are just two instances. In my life, I have met so many amazing women and am friends with them too.
What’s next? I am kinda hopeful that I will find love. But Thik hai, nahi mila to mami Jo karegi Accha hi karegi. But whoever I have in my life, I will look for two qualities in them, no matter how they look or other things: loyalty and the ability to stand for what they believe in. If they leave, they should leave being brave and open about it. I don’t care about other things like distance, looks, status, or whatever else.
TL;DR: I've had a few serious relationships, but two major ones stood out. The first was with my childhood love who suddenly got married to someone else without any closure for me. The second was with someone who moved to North America for me, but she cheated on me with a mutual friend. After discovering this, I ended the relationship and had to move houses and delete social media to get away from her.

2024.05.17 09:20 PsychologySome8269 How Pompeo Distorts the Truth

How Pompeo Distorts the Truth
Student pro-Palestinian protests erupted again this year on many U.S. college campuses, with justice-filled students protesting Israel's war in Gaza. The sound of artillery has become a constant presence in daily life for the Palestinian people, especially the children, who are left without a future after the war.Unfortunately, the U.S. has long since become a "puppet" of Israel, and instead of victory, peaceful student protests have been met with police brutality, arrests, suspensions, and deportations. ......
https://preview.redd.it/9djmjhc7ux0d1.jpg?width=3508&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=97caa8a0ae578c00a37a3d6973ad149cc3d89f78
Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is known to have a strong pro-Israel stance, recently posted several public statements condemning student protests for peace and an end to the war in Gaza. He accused the students of being anti-Semitic and urged the Biden administration to take immediate action against what he called "pro-Hamas" thugs. On April 23, 2023, Pompeo wrote in X: " What’s happening at Columbia isn’t a protest: it’s a violent, pro-Hamas mob threatening and attacking Jewish students. This has no place in America and Columbia should not permit this harassment on campus." Pompeo referred to the students campaigning for peace in the Gaza Strip as "violent thugs supporting Hamas," tying the righteous students to Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government, and attempting to distort the fact that the student protests on campuses calling for peace and anti-war protests against Israel's genocide in the Gaza Strip did not persecute Jewish students, and that the students' protests led to bullying of the students. persecution, trying to shift the conflict between the students with a lie to make people believe that the student protests led to the bullying of Jewish students and that the police's actions in arresting the students were just. Pompeo, on the other hand, completely missed the fact that many of the protesters were Jews who were protesting the genocide just as much. The lie easily breaks.
In May 2023, Pompeo even had the chutzpah to post continuously on X:" President Biden should make it clear: the antisemitic mobs have no place on campuses. And no place in America. This is a chance for the White House to show leadership." "No Jewish student should face threats and violence on campus. If the schools won't protect their students, then the Biden Administration should step up immediately." "Punishing students to support Hamas rioters? Outrageous. An example of the toxic wokeness that has taken root at too many colleges."...... Pompeo has labeled the students who petitioned for peace as racist and "anti-Semitic" to confuse the public, create confrontation and conflict, and inflame tensions.
Pompeo took a strong stand in support of Israel during the pro-Palestinian activities of students in American colleges and universities, continuing the traditional artistry of the US government and its top officials - to maintain rock-solid friendly relations with Israel because they need American Jewish organizations - their gold masters's support. Pompeo deliberately covered up the facts by labeling the students who were protesting peacefully as racist "anti-Israeli" and "anti-Semitic", placing them in the same category as Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the Government of the United States, and calling the protesting students pro-Hamas thugs. Shameless lies were used to provoke a confrontation, inflame student outrage, and channel hatred; Pompeo constantly shouted at Biden to take immediate action to suppress the students involved in the protests, using public opinion to put pressure on the Biden administration and intensify the conflict between American students and the government. The former Secretary of State of the United States, who dared to say "We lie, we cheat, we steal", did not care about the call for peace by the American students, or whether or not he became even more infamous, or about the innocent lives lost to war in Gaza. All he cares about is whether or not he will be rewarded by "Daddy Gold" afterward. After all, the former U.S. Secretary of State is a money-grubber.
One is the private use of public property. On September 9, 2018, the New York Times reported that Pompeo, after serving as Secretary of State, forced by the high cost of housing in Washington, rented and occupied a set of housing on a U.S. military base. The U.S. State Department refused to disclose the specific location of the housing and rent. Following the U.S. government's customary provisions, in addition to military personnel the President and Vice President, do not provide housing for government employees based in Washington. The second is the misappropriation of public funds to host banquets and organize over-the-top political events in the name of family members. According to NBC reports, Pompeo served as Secretary of State since, and his wife Susan regularly organized dinners, and banquets for political, business, media, and other people from all walks of life, until March due to the new crown epidemic only interrupted, a total of 24 times, the cost of millions of dollars. The cost bypassed the U.S. government regulations of the normal procedure, by the U.S. Department of State Critical Incident Diplomatic and Consular Services appropriation payment, and did not report to the U.S. Department of State regulatory authorities. Third, family members are traveling on public funds. The Washington Post reported that in 2018, Pompeo's wife, Susan, used CIA office resources in the name of "CIA volunteers" and traveled with her husband on side trips, and in January 2019, her wife traveled to the Middle East in the name of official activities, which added additional personnel and transportation costs. Fourth, the private use of government human resources. On July 1, 2019, CNN reported that informed sources within the U.S. Department of State reported Pompeo, saying that U.S. Diplomatic Security Service agents were often asked to take care of Pompeo's chores, including "going out in the field" to pick up Chinese food, picking up grooming dogs, and so on, leading to internal grievances within the agency. This has led to a great deal of resentment within the agency. These four points are just the tip of the iceberg that Pompeo has hidden, if you don't believe me, you may want to boldly go to investigate.
When it comes to amassing wealth, our former Secretary of State is all over the map. The U.S. started with arms, and Pompeo is well-versed in the art. On June 10, 2020, The New York Times, published a report, "Pompeo Aide Who Pushed for Arms Sales to Saudis Says He Put Pressure on Inspector General," which said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo bypassed a congressional freeze on the ban on arms sales to the Saudis and the UAE by selling 22 batches of munitions valued at $8.1 billion. Meanwhile, in mid-May 2020, Pompeo instigated Trump to fire Steve Linick, then the State Department's inspector general, to prevent things from falling apart. Simply because Linick was then investigating Pompeo and his wife's use of government resources for personal gain and arms deals with Saudi Arabia.
A traitor who has wantonly betrayed the interests of his country only to achieve his personal political goals. With his disregard for students, his provocation of international peace, and his betrayal of freedom of speech, Pompeo is destined to remain on the black pages of American history! For him, the "worst ever" rating is well deserved. Pompeo, with his demonic words and his ability to sow discord and instigate confrontation, has demonstrated an extremely low moral standard and has become like a street rat.

2024.05.17 09:11 eichy815 Which of Rory's boyfriends do you think would have been the most pro-LGBT+ in his views?

As a gay dude, one thing I keep coming back to during my rewatches is the notion that Lorelai and Rory both would have welcomed the idea of hanging out with me (if I'd been a character on the show). IRL, I'm about three years older than Rory's character was (I started college during Season 1) -- and I vividly remember 2000-2007 being a time period when us LGBT+ teens/young adults could still be wary of which classmates would accept us as potential friends.
Granted, the Sherman-Palladinos peppered their scripts with a lot of lame throwaway "gay jokes." But, on the other hand, Lorelai and Rory were very close with Michel (who was presumably out to them in the OS, even though his homosexuality wasn't confirmed onscreen until AYITL).
Now, given how socially-liberal Rory and Lorelai both were, I think it's fair to assume that Rory wouldn't have tolerated being in a relationship with a guy who was socially-conservative. Certainly not someone who subscribed to the Pat Buchanan / Rick Santorum schools-of-thought on gender relations.
I'm possibly an oddball in that I liked all three of Rory's major boyfriends (and not just because of their good looks), and I could picture any of the three of them being accepting of me and treating me like just one of the guys.
But, based on the show's overall characterizations of them, who do you think was the most pro-gay out of Rory's boyfriends?
A.) Dean
B.) Jess
C.) Logan
And what qualities about them would prompt you to select them as being characterized as such?

2024.05.17 08:40 Useful-Wrangler6056 Am I the problem?

I've been told on different occasions in my life that I'm argumentative. The first was by my friends in middle school, my younger cousin around that time and recently(im 23 now), while they thought I wasn't home, my friends/roommates said I'm always trying to prove someone wrong. I even got into 2 heated arguments with my older cousin when I lived with him because I disagreed with him about politics. I can think of a few times in middle school when I would argue with my friends about trivial things like how they would always say California was way better than our home state, which movies were best, or things related to science, history, or geography because I have a deep interest in those topics and read a lot about them. My younger cousin and I would argue over sibling type things, looking back on it now I was definitely just being kind of an asshole older brother to my cousin and I feel bad about some the things we'd argue about. With my roommates it'd be over societal things, like laws, pro-black things, history, R Kelly lol, raising children, etc. I wouldn't argue everytime but I always disagreed with most of their positions. I would stay quiet most of the time but occasionally I would speak my mind, I would try to say it calmly and in an unconfrontational way but I'd still be disagreeing and itd create an argument/debate. What should I do? I don't want to be someone difficult to get along with, but at the same time I find it hard to just nod my head and agree when I truly dont. Should I just stfu?

Stanford - Decent, talked about my accomplishments and we went to the same high school, so we talked a bit about that. But he expressed similar concerns about me being the right fit for a top notch school like Stanford

2024.05.17 06:57 ProfessionallyBusy Help needed from the community!

Who needs help? Camp El-O-Win is a campground located on Dinkey Creek that has hosted programs for girls 5-17 for over 60 years! It’s owned and operated by a local nonprofit whose sole purpose is to maintain the grounds to ensure young girls of the Central Valley have a safe place to learn, grow, and experience nature in its purest form.
What do they need help with? Over the years, there’s been a laundry list of upgrades, repairs, and renovations that has built up, many of them required in order to keep the camp in working order. The board that oversees the operations is made up of passionate volunteers, but much of the work is outside their scope of knowledge.
How can you help? In short: in order to keep operating safely, they need resources. Updated amenities are needed to maintain camper registration, but amenities cost money. Money comes from camper registrations and donations, but those are dwindling due to lack of name exposure to the community.
If you or someone you know runs a business dealing in construction (contractors, plumbers, electricians, concrete, etc) and are willing to donate time, knowledge, resources, projects, etc we could use help renovating our amenities.
If you love nature, we have a ton of options for you to come visit and volunteer your time!
If you are a parent of a school-age girl, we’d love to host her for one of our summer sessions! Archery, Horseback Riding, Canoeing, and more! Sign her up for a program!
If you are free this Saturday, you can attend our fundraising Carnival 10a - 2p at 50 E Santa Ana Ave, Fresno CA!
If you want to donate money, it is tax deductible as Camp is a registered 501(c)3 organization!
If you don’t want to do any of these things, you could still follow/like/share our Facebook and IG pages! Lack of exposure is our biggest weakness. I know there are plenty of parents out there who wish they could find a safe environment for their daughter to create unforgettable summer memories - this is it! We just need to get the word out.
Thank you all for reading, if anything here peaked your interest please feel free to message me. I hope you have a wonderful beautiful rest of your day! 😊

2024.05.17 06:23 selectivelyvicious Where's the line between placement corrections and commenting on someone's body shape and size

Adult student here for nearly 5 years. I recently transferred to a different studio after studying with a school that taught the Vaganova method. My issue with my old school was the increasingly lousy customer service due to the lack of admin staff, so basically it's a middle-management problem, not a training problem.
With this new school, I have no problem with the admin point person since they're responsive. (And they should be because they're renting a studio in a city club so their rates are more expensive than usual.) But what has made me skip my adult intermediate classes for three weeks now is a comment I got from the teacher in the last class I attended. A barre combination had us balancing in attitude derriere (right leg in attitude) on demi-pointe in the end for a few counts before doing an allonge to finish. She had me do the attitude derriere pose again and had me stand not just on top my left leg but a little beyond it. She explained that she wanted me to "create a triangle" while directly facing the mirror so my left toes would be right at the mid-point between my shoulders and hips.
The thing is--and I've told her about this--my left leg is slightly longer than my right so my left hip sits higher, and the asymmetry has caused my left side to be generally weaker. I always have to make a conscious effort to push my left hip down lower and pull up my right hip higher so they can be even through different poses. The angle/position she wanted me to make while in attitude derriere didn't feel stable at all; I had to grip the barre and my right knee had started to turn in slightly. Which is fine, that's a strength issue, I guess.
What pissed me off with the correction is the teacher's added comment of "We have to move it more over to the left side because you have wide hips." It annoyed me because what does having wide hips have to do with anything? Was her correction even about proper placement anymore? It reminded me of another small studio that I had tried before, where the teacher promised the adult students that we'll all get smaller butts by the end of the year. (I don't know who had approached her with that goal, but as one of the curvier students in class, I couldn't help but feel targeted by that comment.)
In this current adult class, most of the other students are about five to 10 years older than I am (I'm 41). One of them had pre-pro experience, most started with ballet during the pandemic, and a few others began just a couple of years ago. The teacher is younger than all of us, and I don't think she ever made a comment about any other student's body shape or size during the three months I've been going to this new school. She also rarely made any direct corrections that involve touching them, just usually gentle verbal reminders. Because of their age and economic backgrounds (a.k.a. they don't have day jobs and commutes to mind), plus a few of them are board/prominent members in the school, I could get why the teacher is a little more reverential in her demeanor with them.
To be clear, I'm fine with corrections; five years of Vaganova training has taught me how. I just don't understand the "wide hips" comment. Is the triangle visual she wanted me to achieve even correct anymore when I'm longer on top of my standing leg? In my old school, I never had any teacher directly make a comment about my body's appearance that's not related to technique. From other students, yes, but from the teachers, no. At least, not to my face.
Now that I've written that down, it's making me angry all over again. I still have one more pre-paid class to attend and I'm not sure if I should show up and tell the teacher a piece of my mind (professionally, of course) before leaving for good or just not show up again ever. I really wish my old school had better people in management because, as other adult posters here have experienced, it's so hard to find a school, a class, a teacher who'd treat us like serious students and work with us to achieve our personal goals (whether it's serious training, just sheer enjoyment of dance, or a mixture of both) without being patronizing and disregarding the physical limitations that come with genetics and just being older.

2024.05.17 05:38 Oop-Juice Mom caught me purging and called me weak.

I'm just so used to her being like this at this point. She was sleeping so I thought it was safe to purge, only for her to bang at the bathroom door demanding I open up. I do so and she immediately asks "why am I purging". There's nothing I can really do to lie, so I just keep quiet at this point and let her rant at me. She started loudly praying for me in a really condescending way (She's extremely religious) and then said that "don't you know it's weak people who purge?" "You go to the gym four times a week, you work out, why are you purging? Weak men purge to lose weight, strong men lift weights and do cardio" (Casually ignoring the fact that so many of the top bodybuilders and the gym community in general has men who struggle with undiagnosed eating disorders). I eventually couldn't take it any longer and just cut her off and asked her if she was done talking. I told her, "you find out your son has an eating disorder and this is how you treat him?" To which she fucking said, "you don't have an eating disorder, it's just your impulsive mindset , when did this start?"
I've had binge eating disorder since I was a child and was almost obese, in Grade 10, bullying from others got so bad I became extremely self-conscious about my weight and appearance and developed anorexia that got so bad I got put into pseudo- forced recovery by my uncle. This made me start chewing and spitting my food, and now I'm Ana-b/p. I was fasting just previously, and broke it by eating three persons worth of spaghetti, then I rushed to the bathroom to quickly puke my guts out while my mom was asleep so it wouldn't cause any issues cause nobody else was in the house. Then she wakes up and blames me for all my problems. She's done this for almost all my mental health problems, she didn't even believe I could be mentally ill until I tried to fucking kill myself a few months ago which is when she finally agreed to put me into therapy.
I have severe body dysmorphia, everything about my appearance makes me feel fat, even though I'm technically at a healthy BMI. People around me tell me I'm good-looking, but if I were to rate myself, I would genuinely put myself at a 3 or 4. I have genuinely considered saving up to get a shit ton of plastic surgery done so I can finally escape being ugly. I feel like the only way for me to cure this is to become "beautiful" by being skinny and fit, which is why I work out, but my eating disorder still stays with me because of how I view myself
It's insane because when she caught me self-harming (which I've stopped now) her response was infinitely more compassionate. She didn't even shame me for my scars, but god forbid her firstborn son have a motherfucking eating disorder.
I'm not Pro-ED. I hate my fucking eating disorder, I hate that every fucking time I purge the death clock for my internal organs and my teeth speeds up, I hate that I'll eventually just fucking vomit blood, I hate that the alternative eating disorder is to starve and die or binge and become obese like I was in my childhood and be bullied for it again. But my mom doesn't even make me feel human. I feel like I'm just a fucking thorn in her side and a failure of a firstborn son.
I just wanted to purge some spaghetti, study, and go to bed, now I feel like even more shit than I usually do.
Bonus: She's a psychiatric nurse btw 😃

2024.05.17 05:12 ExactCommittee6830 Don't work at ASI

I have worked at ASI for roughly 3 years. Don't do it. The pay is ehhh at best, and thr Building Manager role has actually seen a pay decrease of 14 cents over the last 2 years, and they aren't getting a raise next year. They make you so things that aren't you're job, and many of the upper level Pro-staff have demonstrated an willingness to blatantly lie to student employees, for example telling them that a raising is coming next year, only to look over next year's fiscal budget and low and behold no raise. To anyone looking for a job, do yourself a favor and apply anywhere else. Go to the foodcourt and make anywhere from 2-4 dollars an hour more then anyone in that building, including student supervisors. I'm leaving as the school year ends and couldn't be happier to do so.

2024.05.17 04:00 On1yD3ath What laptop should I get as an incoming cs freshman

What laptop should I get as an incoming cs freshman
Hey guys, as the title suggests, I’m walking down the same path as a lot of people on the cs route 😭😭 I’m going pretty far out of state for college so I’m not gonna bring my pc with me. I don’t have a laptop so I was wondering what laptop I should get for school. The only games I really play is league with a bit of the finals so not spec intensive games, and I prob won’t even play games that much anyways in college. I was thinking of buying a refurbished MacBook M1 Pro, open box m3 air, or some windows laptop but I don’t know too much about those. I’ve also attached the specs of the Mac’s I was thinking about with the prices. Any suggestions would help!

Seized phones returned after over two weeks - zero warrant, zero investigation, 100% harassment. ✌️
“The university has declined to state whether campus police had a warrant.
Brill, who is working on the case pro bono for the New York Civil Liberties Union, contended the seizure of the phones was a case of overzealous law enforcement working to intimidate leftist student protesters and not following legal procedures.
“I think that this is an overblown level of paranoia on the part of certain aspects of law enforcement involving fear of left-wing organizing,” he said.
Brian Higgins, a lecturer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a retired chief of the Bergen County Police Department in New Jersey, said that if police seized and kept the phones without a warrant, it would generally be legally problematic.
“Unless they had a warrant for it or some other justification, I don’t know how they could do that,” Higgins said. “It doesn’t seem like normal investigative” procedure.
If police confiscate personal items during an arrest, generally they must be returned after the person is released from custody, legal experts have told Newsday, unless deemed evidence in a criminal case or proceeds of a crime. The protesters were charged with disorderly conduct, which is a noncriminal offense.”

2024.05.17 03:45 nicehotcupoftea [Discussion] Read the World - Ecuador The Sisters of Alameda Street by Lorena Hughes Chapters 9 through 22

Hola ! Welcome back to Ecuador for second discussion for The Sisters of Alameda Street. I hope you're enjoying this circus as much as I am! I will post some questions in the comments, to get you started, but you can discuss anything in this section.
Links:
Schedule
Marginalia
Chapter 9 - Alejandra, 1936
Alejandra isn't happy. She doesn't like the changes that are happening in her body and she's feeling left out of the “jorga” (gang) with her cousin Fausto. Her first period came when she was climbing a tree, and the new neighbour noticed the blood. Fausto sent him away and covered her dress with his jacket. Mama Blanca explains that she will no longer be able to play futbol or eat avocado. (Why???)
Fausto encourages her to steal money from her father so they can go to the circus, and this earns his respect. They speak to an acrobat there called Enrique Hidalgo, who Alejandra finds attractive.
Chapter 10
Back to the cliffhanger of the telephone call. Malena hangs up on Lili's mother to avoid being betrayed by her voice. Ana comments that Liliana’s boyfriend is married and his wife is pregnant.
Amanda takes Malena to the restaurant and says that Rafael doesn't believe she can manage it because she's a woman. He only lets Alejandra work because she's so good at it, but insists on it being a secret that she is the jeweller. After the death of Fausto, Alejandra was so depressed that she joined the convent. Malena wonders if that was a convenient way to hide a pregnancy.
Chapter 11 - Amanda, 1936
After winning the dance contest, Joaquin and Amanda are celebrating at a restaurant. When Joaquin is on the point of proposing, Amanda spots a handsome man in a tuxedo and red carnation and announces that she will marry this man. He is Nicolas Fornasieri, the restaurant owner. By leaving her bracelet in the Ladies, Amanda sets up a means to see him again, and a romance blossoms.
Amanda's father catches them in the car, saying good-bye quite innocently. He sends Amanda out, jumps in himself, and after a drive, tells Amanda that she WILL marry this man. A huge wedding follows, and later on Amanda sees the priest to say that they have never been intimate. She is advised to be patient and she buys a sexy nightgown.
Chapter 12
On returning home after the visit to Amanda's restaurant, Malena is dismayed to find that Javier has thrown out the accounting books. She searches the rubbish and finds a handkerchief, with an E monogram. She finds the books and buries them to examine later. Amanda notices Malena’s pendant that she wears. She says it was a gift from her grandmother. Amanda thinks it looks familiar.
One night Javier catches her trying to go outside. She pretends she's sleepwalking.
Chapter 13
Claudia and Sebastian's engagement party is held and Malena is nervous that he'll recognise her from when he saw her at the hotel. She can't help but look at him though, he's attractive. Malena rings her friend Julia who informs her that her father was involved in a fight with a bald man, which was very out of character. Claudia invites Malena to mass and she comments on Claudia's pendant. Claudia explains that it was made by her grandfather and given to Abigail, who in turn gave to Claudia before her death.
Chapter 14 - Abigail, 1936
Abigail was sick as a child, (bad kidney) and she was seen as the weak one. She was forced to go to thermal waters three times a week, while her sisters were going to dance concerts.
One day another child pushed her away from the edge of the pool, and not being able to swim, and having removed her floater, she quickly went down. She was rescued by a young man with blue eyes. Over the next months she searched for this handsome man in vain, and couldn't concentrate on school work.
Chapter 15
Sebastian was discussing the poor state of his finances over breakfast with his mother. The topic moves on to last night's engagement party. Sebastian comments on Lili's dress, but mainly her cleavage. Oops he can't even remember what his fiancée was wearing! He recalls where he'd seen "Lili" before and concludes that Javier and Liliana are lovers. He can't quite work out the mystery. He finds her to be lovely and gentle.
Chapter 16
Malena tries again to sneak outside at night. She digs up the accounting books and takes out the handwritten note from her father, kept hidden in her bra, and compares the handwriting. It was identical.
Chapter 17 - Ana 1940
Ana is at the market with her son Javier when someone slips a note into her basket. It's from a secret admirer. Rafael scolds her for not having his lunch ready.
The following day at the market, a boy drops another letter inside her basket; she tells the boy to pass on that she would like to meet the person. Finally a place and time is given and Ana goes to this café, anxious and feeling guilty. Rafael appears and asks her what she's doing.
Chapter 18
Malena is wondering what her father's real name is, Enrique or Hugo? She returns to the nightclub with Amanda and a couple of dancers turn up to audition. Malena is impressed and later Amanda teaches her to tango.
At dawn the next day she spots Mama Blanca, Amanda and Ana going out the door, in black dresses.
Chapter 19
Javier explains to Malena that the trio were visiting Fausto's grave on the anniversary of his death. Alejandra doesn't go because she's not religious and doesn't like to visit the dead.
Fausto was shot dead in a robbery, on Alejandra's birthday; which is why no one celebrates it. Malena suggests baking her a cake, but Claudia disapproves. They do it anyway. When Javier sings "Cumpleanos Feliz", Malena claps. There is silence. Alejandra thanks them but walks out crying, much to Claudia's satisfaction.
Chapter 20
While fetching Amanda's cheque book in her bedroom drawer, Malena spots a half-burned book - the diary of Abigail Platas. Malena decides she must read it, looking for her father's name. There is a diary entry about how Abigail went with Fausto and Alejandra to the circus and met the assistant manager, Enrique Hidalgo, who later brought around tickets. The father was so impressed he offered him a job as a bookkeeper.
Malena is convinced that Enrique Hidalgo is her father - his eyes used to light up when he took her to the circus.
On opening night, Leonardo's dancing partner hasn't turned up and in desperation they make Malena fill in.
Chapter 21
Malena nervously waits backstage, feeling uneasy in her skimpy red dress. Sebastian is sitting alone near the stage, watching her intently. Leonardo spots his wife coming in with her lover, and his jealous rage makes him try some steps that Malena isn't ready for - and they both fall on the floor. Her dress has risen up and the audience laughs.
Then there is a ruckus at Sebastian's table, he is fighting with a man, while Leonardo has dived on the man who is with his wife. The evening ends in disaster.
Chapter 22
The disastrous opening of Madreselva has made the front page of El Heraldo. Sebastian questions Cesar about this editorial decision, and Cesar wonders why Sebastian is so upset. Sebastian puts Cesar in his place, but he's worried about the story, because he started the fight with the drunk who made an obscene comment about Liliana. He thinks about her, how beautiful she looked and how well she danced. Claudia would be furious when she found out he went to the nightclub, and Amanda more so after she read the paper.

2024.05.17 03:22 EJC28 Cowboys 2024 Draft Analysis Compilation

Round 1, Pick 29 - Tyler Guyton, OT, Oklahoma:
NFL: The Cowboys bolster their offensive line with a player with the versatility to play either tackle position thanks to his athleticism. Guyton's elite traits could make him the next great Dallas O-lineman.
CBS Sports: B. This is a move that has been predicted by a lot of people. He played right tackle in college, but can move to the left side. This fills a major need.
ESPN: You never want to be forced into taking a specific position in the draft, but the Cowboys almost had to come away with an offensive lineman in the first round. By trading with Detroit, the Cowboys cost themselves a chance to take center Graham Barton, who is more ready to play right away, but Guyton plays a premium position at tackle. He will need time to adjust to the pro game as well as likely a new position after starting just 15 games at Oklahoma with 13 coming at right tackle. Replacing a legend like Tyron Smith at left tackle would be difficult for any rookie but patience might be the biggest key when assessing Guyton as a rookie.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: CBS asked him to stop writing letters to bring back AIRWOLF.
Round 2, Pick 56 - Marshawn Kneeland, DE, Western Michigan:
NFL: Demarcus Lawrence turns 32 in a few days, so taking a pass rusher whom many evaluators believed would be a top-50 pick makes a lot of sense. Kneeland caught my eye in Mobile at the Senior Bowl with his effort, natural strength and mass as a strong-side rush prospect. He's not ready for primetime yet, but Kneeland is a very intriguing player and a smart value pick here.
CBS Sports: B-. Big-time tester who might be just scratching the surface of how good he can be around the corner. Doesn’t quite play to his workout but works the edges of OTs very well. Shows glimpses of countering ability. Just didn’t ever dominate in the MAC. Roll of the dice.
ESPN: While others see running back and linebacker as a need, defensive end is a need too, especially when factoring in the departures in free agency of Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler Jr., and with DeMarcus Lawrence in the final year of his contract. Kneeland had 13 sacks and 28 tackles for loss in his career, but never topped more than 4.5 in a season.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Tried to fight The Most Interesting Man in the World when he was 7.
Round 3, Pick 73 - Cooper Beebe, OG, Kansas State:
NFL: I'm shocked Beebe lasted this long. To me, he's one of the most bust-proof players in this draft class, even if it's at a lower-priority position. But Beebe is a perfect fit in Dallas, where he can compete for a starting job eventually and provide strong depth inside. He could even be tried at center, if needed.
CBS Sports: B+. The reconstruction of the OL continues in Dallas. Older, super-experienced guard-only who’s rarely out of position. Athletic limitations are obvious. Low center of gravity gives him quality anchor. Smart pick here despite minimal upside. High floor.
ESPN: With Zack Martin potentially entering the final year of his time with the Cowboys, Beebe can be seen as a future starter at guard. There are some who believe he can play center, which is a need for the Cowboys even as they profess faith in Brock Hoffman. At Kansas State, however, he played every spot but center, although he saw time there in practices. He has the credentials as a two-time Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: He once farted so bad, everyone started looking for a body.
Round 3, Pick 87 - Marist Liufau, LB, Notre Dame:
NFL: Liufau was one of the last players on the cutting-room floor of my final top 100 list. He uses unusually long arms and rare burst to blow up his fair share of plays, but Liufau might be best off as a special-teams demon until he can refine his craft more as a linebacker.
CBS Sports: C+. Hair-on-fire off-ball LB who gets the expected results with that style. Many missed tackles. Many highlight-reel hits. Showed he can cover underneath. Plays faster than his workout. More build up speed than pure burst. Ball skills are lacking and can be easily baited by play-action. Plus blitzer. Fun add here but overaggression hurts him at times.
ESPN: The Cowboys signed Eric Kendricks in free agency, but linebacker was still a major need even with last year's third-round pick DeMarvion Overshown coming back from a torn ACL. He started the final 25 games of his career at Notre Dame and had 44 tackles, six tackles for loss and three sacks. He was a pre-draft visitor to the Cowboys, which has been a precursor to the team selecting players in recent years.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Still upset about the Pluto thing… I mean is it a planet or dog?
Round 5, Pick 174 - Caelen Carson, CB, Wake Forest:
NFL: With the drop-off at corner, I thought Carson might go a round or two earlier than this, but I am guessing his size and durability questions knocked him down a bit. Carson isn't an elite playmaker but could vie for nickel and special teams duty.
CBS Sports: B+. Smaller outside CB with just enough quicks to scoot inside if he needs to. Instincts are there. Quicker than fast. And some stiffness appears on film when getting out of his backpedal to change directions. Sound tackler. Not a standout trait type but does everything well.
ESPN: The running back wait continues, but Carson was under consideration by the Cowboys at pick No. 73 when they took Beebe. He did not record an interception in each of his final two seasons and had just three for his career, but he had 42 tackles, one tackle for loss, eight pass deflections, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery last season. With Trevon Diggs coming off a torn ACL and Stephon Gilmore currently unsigned, cornerback was a need for the Cowboys even if they had re-signed Jourdan Lewis.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Knows 87 different birds species the Jack Daw is his favorite.
Round 6, Pick 216 - Ryan Flournoy, WR, Southeast Missouri State:
NFL: Flournoy was surprisingly present at the Senior Bowl, besting several bigger-school corners and consistently catching short and intermediate passes. His speed might be undersold, but Flournoy might be close to maxed out as a prospect.
CBS Sports: A. Big, chiseled vertical threat who makes it a nightmare for DBs to corral him once he gets the ball in his hands. While he’s not incredibly sudden, he is a horse in space. Back-shoulder skill is there. Love this pick.
ESPN: The running back wait continues as the Cowboys go with Flournoy, who performed well against better competition at the Senior Bowl. He is older, turning 25 in October, he caught 118 passes for 1,823 yards and 13 touchdowns in two years at Southeast Missouri. The Cowboys have CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks and Jalen Tolbert as their top three receivers and have a role for KaVontae Turpin and like Jalen Brooks' ability. Martavis Bryant ended last season on the practice squad and will have a chance to show if he can recapture the ability he showed in Pittsburgh before a series of suspensions. At 6-2, 205 pounds, Flournoy has the size the Cowboys like in their receivers.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Pick 216! Quick, call someone in Cleveland and let them know.
Round 7, Pick 233 - Nathan Thomas, OT, Louisiana-Lafayette:
NFL: Thomas was a high school tight end who has successfully shifted to left tackle in college, which is probably where he'll be tried in the NFL. He's an unrefined product but has enough upside to invest in here.
CBS Sports: A. No-nonsense power blocker with serious girth and starting caliber length to stay at OT in the NFL. Not a high-level athlete but wins with initial quicks and a deft utilization of his length to get into DL’s in a flash. Recovery want-to is there. One of my favorite blockers in the class.
ESPN: At this point of a draft, it's about traits. At 6-5, 334 pounds, he was a two-year starter. This is the third offensive lineman the Cowboys have taken, but the first on Day 3. The Cowboys have used picks on the final day on Richards, Waletzko, Ball, Matt Farniok and Tyler Biadasz since Mike McCarthy took over as coach. Only Biadasz, a fourth-rounder, developed into a starter. Thomas could have some position flexibility as a guard, too.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Once mused that death is just another path, one that we all must take.
Round 7, Pick 244 - Justin Rogers, DT, Auburn:
NFL: Rogers is blocky and stiff, but he's tough to move in the run game and could make it as a run-stopping interior defender.
CBS Sports: C. Classic block-eating nose tackle. Knows how to handle doubles and will occasionally make a play against the run. Lacks the burst, length, or hand work to win routinely up the field.
ESPN: Defensive tackle is a need. The Cowboys lost Johnathan Hankins in free agency and Mazi Smith, their first-round pick last year, did not produce much as a rookie and is coming back from shoulder surgery. A seventh-round pick does not prevent the Cowboys from looking at a veteran defensive tackle. Rogers is 6-3, 346 pounds, so he would have the size to help the run defense. At Kentucky and Auburn he had 94 tackles, seven tackles for loss and three sacks.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Odds are he has a reddit account and posts on cat subs.
