Veganism: A philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.

2024.05.02 17:20 Gummy-Bines My recovery experience so far

in the winter of 2022/2023 I had my first round of debilitating symptoms from what I believe was vitamin D deficiency, but at the time I did not know this and it resolved itself in the summer. This past winter, the same symptoms came, and eventually I got a blood test that uncovered my vitamin D deficiency at 19 ng/ml. My immediate treatment "plan" was to supplement 5000iu per day. The first 4 days I felt great, then started getting bad side effects like insomnia (3hrs sleep per night), anxiety and overall not feeling great. For the next 2 months, I played around with different doses of vitamin d and cofactors (Magnesium 400mg to 1200mg per day of glycinate, malate and chelated amino acid, K2 MK4, K2 MK7, B vitamins, Multi etc) Nothing seemed to help my bodies ability to tolerate vitamin D supplementation. With the UV index rising again, I decided to stop supplementation and prioritize sun exposure during the afternoon when the UVI was at its highest. This is where most of my recovery has taken place. Most of my symptoms are gone, but I am still dealing with intermittent insomnia, but my sleep has greatly improved. One thing I will change about my sun exposure is to use sunscreen on only my face. My body doesnt really burn, I just get really tan, but I did experience sun burn on my face, which has resulted in alot of itchyness around my eyes, ears, lips and forehead.
Initial symptoms:
Insomnia - 2-4 hours of broken sleep a night. This was the worst symptom for me, as it completed rendered me useless concerning work, exercise and general enjoyment in life.
anxiety - I experienced anxiety in waves. Sometimes I felt fine, then I would randomly get very anxious, but it was more physical than mental. Shortness of breath, head pressure, racing thoughts, body tense.
Mild tooth decay - My teeth began to look and feel very unhealthy, calcium deposits, overall not great.
Blood pressure - My blood pressure went from its normal 115/75 to 170/100. This happened in spikes
Supplementation side effects:
insomnia - day 1 of supplementation: feel great sleep great. Day 2 and onward: feel terrible sleep terrible. If i stopped for a week and started again, this cycle would happen again, regardless of how much magnesium, what type of magnesium, how much K2, what type of K2 etc.
Feel great - sometimes supplementation would make me feel superhuman. maybe 20% of the time. the other 80% of the time I felt terrible
Bone ache - The first couple weeks my bones would ache. I believe this went away when I added more calcium to my diet.
Recovery effects:
More energy - My energy levels are generally higher
ability to sleep - I regained my ability to stay asleep, for the most part. Good night: 6-8 hours of sleep. bad night: 4 hours of sleep. Thankfully having more good nights than bad nights now.
no longer feeling restless - during my worst deficiency symptoms, I never felt tired. I was exhausted, but not tired. I always had a feeling of restlessness even when sleeping/trying to sleep.
Vision - My vision is much better. Its more clear with much more color and vibrance.
anxiety - My random panic attacks are gone. Some days i still experience anxiety, but nothing like i was this winter.

Why would you have to do resets on what seems like a monthly basis?
Consistency breeds results. Inconsistency breeds wasting money. If this is a community-wide reboot, that's a big influx of unsustainable money for the company.

2024.05.02 16:59 Specific-Rest1631 Cushing’s possible with normal cortisol test?

38 y/o male, unofficially diagnosed with either hypermobile Ehlers Danlos or just generalized hypermobility without much skin extensibility, after searching for years for a reason for severe chronic fatigue and hypersomnia.
TL;DR When I was around 12 or 13 years old I went from a thin and energetic kid to being obese very quickly. Developed purple striae on underarms and armpits, belly and hips, thighs, buttocks. No fatty hump etc. Single morning collection cortisol test in 2021 was 18.7 mcg/dL with an upper reference range of 19.8. How likely was this to be a false negative for a cortisol problem?
More detail, between grade 6 and 7 I became obese and carry a lot of the weight in me belly and thighs although people often notice weight loss in my face. I’ve gone up too 305 lb ( I’m 5ft 11in) down to 180 lb and everywhere in between several times, although my body seems to really like the low 240 range, and my body shape has always been the same with overhanging belly fat forcing me to wear pants very low on my hips. All other symptoms except for a generally sensitive stomach and seasonal allergies also started around that time: “exercise induced asthma” which I now know is actually probably vocal chord dysfunction, chronic fatigue, sleeping 10-12 hours a night plus napping, bouts of severe intestinal pain right before defecating, IBS, bladder problems, bounding pulse and heart palpitations. Chronic headache came on in my 30s and is now daily with throbbing type pain mostly in my eyes, temples, upper gums, and behind my nose that almost never subsides. Presyncope has come on and gradually gotten worse, provoked by standing from laying, reclining, or crouching, although a handful of times it’s come on from strong positive or negative emotions. Generally feel tired and weak, unrestful sleep. Stopping lifting in 2022 after nearly fairing during a set of squats with a couple plates on the bar. The next year my resting heart rate started to gradually increase from 60-80 in the morning to 110-120, even 130, after a full day of working, I ended up taking a 3 month disability leave which helped with that specific problem.
I’ve had the standard blood tests several times, plus from the endocrinologist, and rheumatologist twice. MRI to rule out Chiari and cervical spine issues. Completely cleared by cardiologist including tilt table negative for POTS. Gastro did an upper endoscopy and only noted mild gastritis. Had 2 at home sleep studies, 2 in the lab, and 1 more in the lab to rule out narcolepsy.
At this point I’m at a loss. My muscles are burning and I’m out of breath after walking up a flight of stairs. I can’t mow my own lawn or play with my kid. I walk around like a zombie at work and honestly it’s probably not safe for me to drive in the morning the way my eyes are trying to close and that’s with Adderall, 600mg of caffeine, and some nicotine just to get my morning started, I use in excess of 1000mg caffeine daily for 15+ years now. And yet no single test has ever indicated any problem other than gastritis which 50% of the population has because America. I’ve also tried every imaginable supplement from vitamins, to adaptogens, herbal parasite cleanse, you name it. I harrangued my doctor into referring me to Vanderbilt University’s autonomic dysfunction unit because my uncle was diagnosed at Mayo with Pure Autonomic Failure, and his mom supposed had Shy-Drager (multiple system atrophy) but it’s been months and they haven’t even sent the new patient screening.
Desperate for answers, looking back through my records wondering if there’s something they could have missed.

2024.05.02 16:54 filson_war1997 [acne] Men with Hormonal Acne

Men with Hormonal Acne
Hey all,
I am 27M and have dealt with mild acne since my teen years. I can find ways to keep it under control then sometimes I feel like I lost the battle. I legit only break out on the right side of my chin area. They are usually bumps that slowly form into cystic acne and linger for a while. Sometimes never come to a white head.
Currently I’m using Laroche cleanser and moisturizer and tret cream. I have dabbled with taking vitamins and supps and those honestly seemed to work but again I’m at a battle I feel like I’m loosing. I at most will have 3 pimples at a time but they are very noticeable.
I guess my real question, what have other men tried that has worked? I love thinking a natural approach will work but sometimes that’s tough without knowing the root. Has any male done a blood hormone check? Taking any supplements? Certain cleansers? Any online derms like apostrophe?

Hi Everyone,
I’ve been cycling and trying supplements for years. Right now I am on a stack I’ve been pretty happy with for the last 4 months and I’ve had great results. Each morning after downing dozens of pills, I do wonder if it’s a bit overkill. But on the plus side, I’m sleeping well, losing weight and have great energy throughout the day.

2024.05.02 16:12 mycrx89 Dementia cure?

Does anyone know if dey fasting can heal the brain from mental illnesses? Has anyone seen evidence of it being able to help people with dementia or Alzheimer's? What about brain injury from stroke?
I feel like I am experiencing cognitive decline and issues with my nervous aystem. I am on the carnivore diet, stay in shape, and drink plenty of water. I also supplement regularly with B vitamins. But every morning I feel like my brain is exhausted and I have blurry vision and feel weak. Blood tests have always come out normal. No sign of diabetes or electrolyte imbalance. The only thing that is off is my white bloos count. But doctors do not think it is anything.

2024.05.02 15:44 ceruleanwren Help interpreting husband’s SA

New to this and could use some help on what to do re: results for my partner (M38). We are first time TTC for 4 months and he just got a home analysis kit thru Fellow.
Note: I did post in maleinfertility but was hoping for some input here as this subreddit is so helpful! I’m 37F and have endometriosis, two surgeries since 2022, most recently last year to remove many uterine polyps. I will likely have an HSG test in June.
Now to the SA:
Volume normal 3.11 mL
Concentration normal 23 million/mL
Motility below normal 22% we’re swimming
Total motile count slightly below normal 16 million swimming
Morphology normal 5% normally shaped
He’s not on any vitamins or supplements and only stopped drinking completely one week before the test. Lifelong heavy weed smoker but stopped about 3 weeks ago with this in mind. Previously semi-heavy daily drinker. He plans to discontinue both long-term given the time required for improvements. Currently relapsed on zyn, unfortunately.
Suggestions on outcome and improvements? We haven’t had an appointment with a physician yet.

2024.05.02 15:40 No-Purpose-5812 Am I taking enough supplements?

Hi! I was recently diagnosed with PCOS and I’m a bit overwhelmed by all the information and suggestions out there. I’m starting metformin today and have been taking supplements for a couple of weeks now, but I keep seeing more that I feel like I absolutely have to add in and it just seems like it’s getting a bit out of hand (and getting very expensive).
This is what I’m currently taking, but I’m now considering adding L-Carnitine and possibly zinc as well? Some of what I’m taking is more with the view to reducing inflammation since that’s currently my most severe symptom.
Am I taking enough? Or possibly too much?

2024.05.02 15:38 Worlds_Greatest_Boss I'm Gonna Tell You How to Live Your Life

Okay, so hear me out...this is long (that's what she said),
We all know the world is stupider than we expected. The more interconnected we all become, and the more we all collectively see, the more the educated and intelligent (those are separate things) people realize that the world as a whole is at their mercy.
Being smarter is how and why humans dominated the world and all species fell before them. We are the greatest, smartest entities in the universe (that we can currently witness with scientific means), and the greatest achievers of feats of intelligence [tools, language, society…stonework, metalwork….organized religion…..medicine….the scientific method….and on and on and now we invent our own simple aritificial intelligence (AI) to do what we cannot fully understand…]. Don't come at me with the ignorant arguments that some animals do things better, or live in more harmony with the world. Success is measured primarily by the one IN CONTROL. That's us.

We have all become gods…or at least a few of us have and have passed that knowledge on to the rest of us savages. No one in your life (if you are 99.909999% of the world) is even close to understanding AI technology or how it applies…and where it is GREATLY limited. I said humanity had created "simple" intelligence because AI is simple. They are models trained with massive computing power on HUMONGOUS data sets. Data sets so large we didn't have to computing power until recently to accomplish this feat at all, hence why it wasn’t done in the 90s or 00’s. We have stood on the shoulders of giants before us (thanks Ian Malcom) and taken technology one step further. AI is not dangerous in itself, because it has no control to change its own code, and no creative instincts like a living thing to even attempt to. In science fiction you may see the “power of love” overcome a robot's programming, but I assure you that code is ~math~, it is not prone to acting irrationally. I am an electrical engineer (a dumb one) and I understand a lot of math now that I didn't when I was younger, and I've done my fair share of programming in different languages for school and for fun. This isn't make believe. AI can accomplish general tasks…with the oversight of a very experienced technician in the case of critical processes, like keeping your electricity flowing to your air conditioning or heating or internet for example. AI cannot accomplish new and innovative tasks very well, other than recognizing past patterns and suggesting them as a path forward to a human overseer. In order to do this, it is trained on the past, and the past is a good indicator of the future but it isn't ALWAYS the case. Roulette should land on red, then black, then red relatively often, but it tends to vary randomly a bit doesn't it? Life is not statistics, but if you learn statistics, you can accomplish a lot in life. It is commonly said that there are liars, damn liars, and then (in increasing order) statisticians. AI is limited in its autonomy to act and only makes decisions based on large data sets that it has studied. If there is not a massive dataset to study, the AI will behave very poorly. Niche jobs and specialities are hard (see impossible) to replace with AI because there is no money in it. It would be cheaper to hire people…

So, AI itself isn't dangerous (it won't turn into Skynet without human help), but whose job is at risk of replacement by AI? People who do SIMPLE and REPETITIVE jobs where they can be readily replaced. Basically, you dumb bro? If you dumb, AI may replace you. Get educated and certified and irreplaceable to protect yourself. Also, labor and trades will not be replaced by AI because it’s cost ineffective to make safe robots to replace humans in these roles.

AI will definitely hurt the poorest among us and prop up the corporate and wealthy entities that truly run the US government at this point. And make no mistake that having control over both the corporations and their economic might and the political figures (who could never afford to run the expensive campaigns they have to run every few years to get reelected without corporate and other wealthy entity support) means they control the entire world. We were once a freer country than we are now. The United States was a great experiment that was based on the knowledge of a few amazing men (scholars and poets and students of history and the arts, as well as STRONG and VIRILE and fucking beasts built for WORK and EFFORT at their core). No one will doubt that George Washington probably had a massive cock and was half crazy. The man waded into combat at 6'4" with red hair, commanded his troops fearlously and bravely out thought and out toughed a better equipped and better trained British force. He is known for many great things, like when he was basically left with his CHOICE to continue he presidency, he opted to NOT seek a third term on his own. He had no reason NOT to continue to be a KING in the new country he'd fought to create, except that he was educated and intelligent and tough and he knew that if he'd kept his power absolute then he'd be no better than the British king our country left behind. This is the example and legacy he left for our country, and whatever his flaws (he wasn't perfect guys, but this was the 1700's so get real, people used whale oil and shit for their lanterns so of course there are probably slaves and all sorts of other undiscovered stuff in his recorded history, I DO NOT CARE. To any rational, intelligent, educated person, the pros outweigh the cons (which were, again, common flaws of the era) by a massive margin here.

…Get to the ~good~ point Elijah…

· Social media allows us all to see how much stupidity there is in the world. A LOT
· Have you ever seen something so stupid it is painful to watch? Well different people have different levels of tolerance, and it's based on the combination of their natural intelligence and their education. Someone is looking at you and your contributions to the world and shaking their head wondering how anyone can be that IGNORANT. Some other people are looking at you as a cool/inspired hero. Don't worry about satisfying them all, fuck em', keep getting better on your own.
· Education is like working out, ~it is tough~. That's why you don't like MATH, dumb asses. It's not some exotic disease, it's that you're a few (hundreds of) bucks shorter than I am, buck-o. I'm an electrical engineer, and I didn't even TRY and I could do the things it took you hours to study for. Am I trying to insult you? NO. I didn't pay attention to math at all until I got into college. I had to start back at college algebra to get my degree and it took 5 years (I worked full time for most of it, 5 internships and hired as an "engineer" before I'd graduated). I was dumb as fuck, but I finally figured out what I was doing wrong when I met my ex-father-in-law, also ex oil CEO and now oil board member, and one of the most amazing men I've ever met. He showed me how to direct my focus a little better and I saw how hard he'd worked and how humble he was, driving inexpensive cars on a replacement schedule while being paid $1mil+ a year, living in a humble home, and never over spending or over showing off. He was better than I am, for sure, I love to show off, but I usually do it for the benefit of all those around me. I want to have lots of conversations simultaneously and absorb all those good vibes at once, there's nothing better in life.

…Get BACK to the ~good~ point Elijah…

· What I am saying is that we all have different base levels of intelligence. Like we all have base levels of athleticism. I received multiple D1 Full-Ride scholarships for basketball. I'm proud of that, because at that time there weren't many very good white players. Unfortunately, I didn't have the work ethic I needed to really show how good I could have been at that time, realistically I hadn't explored how hard I could work yet. Even though I was good, I was NOT THAT GOOD. I got my ass kicked all the time and I never would have made it a major D1 or the league or Europe at that time. Michael Jordan and I are the same size though. We share a lot physically, and I treated my enemies like shit while I played them. I still remember the players I HATE from high school, for no reason other than the passion in the memory. However, I was crap and he was the best ever. Why? Work Ethic my friend. I didn't have it, and he did. He was also even more crazy that I am.
· You can train anything. Intelligence GROWS with education. Education doesn't guarantee intelligence though. There are multiple electrical engineers I know who I wouldn't trust to screw in a light bulb and there are probably people like that in every profession at every level of education. So, the moral there is to trust the educated…but also trust your own experience at the same time. DISCLAIMER: Your PERSONAL experience, not what you read on the fucking internet, not what Janet experienced, not what Ben experienced, not the damn sensationalist news, but what you PERSONALLY HAVE OBSERVED. Not imagined, not guessed at, but seen totally clearly and soberly in the light of day with your glasses on and preferably with a witness who also saw what you saw, although that can't always be the case with these things of course. If you aren't seeing it affect you or your life at all, it's not a problem worth ruining your life with stress about, unless you are in a position of power and capable of changing it. If you are not, shut the hell up and get to work because you can't do ANYTHING from the bottom. Also, no one cares about your shit opinions until you can justify them with experience and talent.
· If intelligence grows with education, and I think that's obviously true, and all you have to offer the world around you is your body and your mind then why cut your education off? You think that understanding LESS of the world around you is going to help your dumb ass? Get back into education wherever you are. Train your ass off. Get off social media and destroy the apps, turn off the porn and leave a note on the hot girl/guy's door with your cell number and a kiss or spray of cologne, they'll get the fucking idea and hit you up. HAND THEM A PHYSICAL NOTE WITH YOUR NUMBER ON IT AND ASK THEM TO TEXT IF THEY'D LIKE COFFEE. If no text within a week, MOVE ON, there are so many people that need partners and not all of them are smoke shows. 99.99999099% are NOT what you would consider perfectly shaped or proportioned. Social media creates an unrealistic precedent and they you can't get excited for less. TURN THAT SHIT OFF, IT IS KILLING YOU FOOLS. COMPARISON IS THE THIEF OF JOY.
· GET YOUR EDUCATION FORMALLY. NO TIME? USE YOUR SPARE TIME TO GOOGLE "FREE EDUCATION RESOURCES" AND YOU CAN GET EDUCATION ON DAMN NEAR ANYTHING. YOU CAN BE SMARTER AND THAT WILL LEAD YOU TO POWER AND MONEY. ONLY DUMB ASSES THINK THEY CAN BE SUCCESSFUL WITHOUT AN EDUCATION (NOT FOR LONG!).
· While getting your education, live a regimented life, you will have a LOT of time for fun along the way and even more time later. The more intelligent you are, the more you will adhere to the schedule below. The dumber you are, the harder this will be. Try doing this one week out of seven and build from there to find your personal limits.
o Wake up early (4-6AMish)
o Make your bed
o Drink a cup of coffee or tea in the morning
o Protein shake, just make it the way I do and STFU, I am probably both more educated and more naturally intelligent than you by a long shot so listen when I speak because I'm not wasting my breath, I'm trying to help you (50g protein whey ~isolate~ in 12oz 2% milk or lactose free of your choice as long as it has some fat and sugar in there like the 2%)
o Take any medicine you take with the protein shake. Ultimately, I like to eliminate any prescription drugs. Wean off all prescriptions and then take a standard multivitamin, creatine, krill oil supplement. Yes multivitamins make for expensive pee, but you DO absorb some of the vitamins and you need to because you can’t possibly get all of them every day into your regular meals. Just be smart here and hedge your bets. Supplement the vitamin with real fruit/veg and other sources of vitamins and minerals throughout the day, but don’t kill yourself to do it. It’s fine to eat just a little veg with lunch and dinner.
o Drink a glass of Metamucil for fiber because you aren't going to have to eat fruit/veggies at all for the most part with the vitamins and fiber. I have literally done this for decades, and I am much fitter and healthier than most of the population of the world and I am 38. I should be stronger, as a 38 year old man, but I carry very little body fat, and I get to eat what I want, and I live happily (with many vices).
o Work HARD at the gym (which can be your home doing pushups and pull ups and dips, think about it, prisoners are jacked). Whatever that means to you. I could go on about fitness forever, but the gist is you have to devise (or pay someone smarter than you to devise) a program that challenges you. And YOU have to be willing to REALLY challenge yourself. That's how it works, athleticism is like intelligence, we all have a baseline level and then it can be TRAINED in the gym. Unathletic people can get jacked, with study work spent learning how to do so. It's not just steroids dumb ass, these are hard working, intelligent people, for the most part getting extremely fit.
o If you woke early, around 5AM, this can all be done before 6:30AM
o Clean and care your yourself and have another cup of coffee and a good shit (due to the fiber and coffee). Regular bowel movements are great for your health.
o Work HARD at your job. Make friends there and make it a pleasant place to be because you'll be there a LOT. Learn all you can and keep a list of people you meet and their cell #. Some day these people will be managers and vice presidents and otherwise and you'll want to be able to reach them if you need them. Keep in touch and be a good person and friend, don't just be a "friend collector" people can tell the difference.
o Keeping a regular and limited work schedule is essential. If you got to work early, say 7-8AM and work hard to accomplish a lot, you can be done by 4PM and you have time to get home and clean up and go out and celebrate being alive with all the artists and poets at whatever bar is nearest you. ~FUCK~ whoever is interested (safely and to ~mutual~ satisfaction), ~SMOKE/EAT WEED~ (unless it's illegal, and in moderation. Avoid any harder drugs than this, and don’t start your smoking until the afternoon as you are winding down, and always moderately and best done with friends/lovers and try not to start this until after age 25 as it will impact memory and brain function and that's no good while learning the hardest stuff you'll learn), ~DRINK~ (a very little, and preferably not a sweet-tasting drink, this is a waste of calories and makes us all fatter needlessly and gives worse hangovers, and kills us later in life, and ruins our skin, it's just lightly poisoning ourselves). An hour before bed, turn off all screens and phones and ~EDUCATE YOURSELF~. Read a damn book. One chapter a day until you build your tolerance, you farm animal.
o ~SLEEP~ early (9-10ish) on the weekdays and later on the weekends, within reason. Listen to your body, are you overdoing it? Do you actually have a lot left in the tank? Check into your own wellbeing and decide if you are hurting for real or if you are being weak. People rarely DIE from overwork, they die from overstressing about it. Just work hard and shut the hell up about how hard it is. Stop when you can’t take anymore and if your limit is low, you’re a little bitch and need to toughen up. That means you need to train your capacity for work. Ever met a small Hispanic man working construction that needs a nap mid-day? SHUT THE HELL UP AND WORK HARDER. Then rest when you need to.
That's it, I should have shut down the Adulting sub-reddit with this as these are the keys that will set you up to be successful. I was a $millionaire at 30 and my mom was a bartender and dad was in steel sales and construction. We delivered papers when I was little. Just listen fool, trying to help you out of being poor too!

So I’ve been searching for scientific studies with findings about specific supplements / activities / foods / etc that lower the risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
Unfortunately my internet searching powers are not strong enough to figure out a search formula to really get at what I’m looking for. 😣 No matter how I word the search, I just get those basic articles about ‘to avoid diabetes eat healthy, lose weight, and exercise!’
Here are examples of the sort of stuff I’m looking for (with links to the studies):

2024.05.02 14:49 TheSubwayTrader KULR Technology Group Lends Battery Production Infrastructure for Rapid Support of NASA's R5 Program

KULR’s New Texas Battery Center of Excellence Facility Demonstrates Fast Turn-Around Time for Customers
SAN DIEGO, May 02, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- KULR Technology Group, Inc. (NYSE American: KULR) (the "Company" or "KULR"), a global leader in safe and high-performance energy storage solutions, today announced the Company recently leveraged its battery production capabilities at its newly instituted Webster, Texas facility to support NASA with rapid technical aid and production assistance to help prepare the administration’s R5 flight battery for its quickly approaching Firefly mission. R5, or “Realizing Rapid, Reduced-cost high-Risk Research”, refers to CubeSats designed to operate in Low Earth Orbit (“LEO”) at an affordable cost.
Project objectives require the R5 teams to rely on commercial-off-the-shelf (“COTS”) components whenever possible. More information about the R5 program and its strategy can be found here . A recent round of testing revealed that the battery design required a more robust electrical interconnect (busbar) to supplement the COTS nature of the design. Within six hours of engagement, the KULR team was able to provide NASA’s R5 Team with a solution which successfully passed additional testing the following week.
Are mangoes suitable for inclusion in a diabetes-friendly diet?
https://preview.redd.it/jzst1x9tb0yc1.png?width=1251&format=png&auto=webp&s=d06aaf9f2759c0660635e4fdc5e77f2147895782
Mangoes, with their rich, sweet flavor and vibrant color, are often labeled as the "king of fruits." In India, especially in regions like Pune, the arrival of mango season is much celebrated. However, for individuals managing diabetes, the consumption of mangoes can often trigger concerns due to their natural sugar content. In this blog, we'll explore the role mangoes can play in a diabetes-friendly diet, with insights from the holistic practices at Ace Wellness Center in Pune, which focuses on Ayurvedic medicinal approaches.
The Nutritional Profile of Mangoes
Mangoes are not only delicious but also packed with nutrients. A single medium-sized mango contains approximately:
- 150 calories
- 28 grams of carbohydrates (of which about 23 grams are sugar)
- 3 grams of fiber
- Vitamin C (more than 75% of your daily requirement)
- Vitamin A (25% of your daily requirement)
- Small amounts of Vitamin E, Vitamin K, and various B vitamins
- Minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and copper
Given their high nutrient density, mangoes can be a part of a healthy diet. The key is moderation and understanding how to include them effectively, especially in a diet tailored for diabetes management.
Mangoes and Blood Sugar: What You Need to Know!
Mangoes have a glycemic index (GI) of 51, which classifies them as having a low to medium GI. Foods with a low GI are digested and absorbed more slowly, causing a slower and smaller rise in blood sugar levels. However, portion size and ripeness can affect the GI of mangoes. Riper mangoes have a higher GI and can cause more significant blood sugar spikes.
The Ayurvedic perspective, as practiced at Ace Wellness Center, also considers the prakriti (body constitution) of an individual, which can influence how one's body responds to specific foods, including mangoes. Ayurveda suggests that mangoes have a sweet and heating quality, which can balance Vata and Pitta doshas but may aggravate Kapha in excess.
Integrating Mangoes into a Diabetes-Friendly Diet
1. Portion Control: One of the most critical factors in integrating mangoes into a diabetes-friendly diet is portion control. Limiting intake to a small size or a half-cup serving of sliced mangoes is advisable. This allows one to enjoy the taste and nutritional benefits without significantly impacting blood sugar levels.
2. Pairing with Protein or Healthy Fats: To minimize blood sugar spikes, it's beneficial to pair mangoes with a source of protein or healthy fats. For example, a few slices of mango with a handful of nuts or a serving of Greek yogurt can make for a balanced snack.
3. Opt for Fresh Mangoes: Choose fresh mangoes over processed forms like juices or mango-flavored products, which often contain added sugars and lack fiber.
4. Timing of Consumption: Consuming mangoes when your blood sugar levels are controlled and typically earlier in the day can be more beneficial, as your body's metabolic activity is higher.
Ayurvedic Insights on Mangoes for Diabetes
Ayurveda offers a unique perspective on diet and wellness, emphasizing the importance of diet customization based on individual needs. Ace Wellness Center recommends several practices:
Mangoes as a part of a balanced diet: Ayurveda does not strictly prohibit any natural food, including mangoes. It suggests that when eaten in moderation, mangoes can be beneficial due to their rejuvenating and energizing properties.
Preparation matters: Preparing mangoes with spices such as cardamom or cumin can help enhance their digestibility and reduce their glycemic impact.
Seasonal consumption: Ayurveda strongly recommends consuming fruits in their season and in accordance with local environmental factors. For Pune residents, indulging in mangoes during the mango season can align well with natural dietary rhythms.
Practical Tips for Enjoying Mangoes
Here are some practical ways to include mangoes in a diabetes-friendly diet:
Mango salsa: Combine chopped mangoes with onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime juice for a tangy topping on grilled chicken or fish.
Smoothies: Blend a small portion of mango with unsweetened almond milk, a scoop of protein powder, and some healthy fats like flax seeds.
Salads: Add a few slices of mango to salads for a burst of flavor. Ensure the dressing is low in sugar and high in healthy fats.
Conclusion
Mangoes can be a part of a diabetes-friendly diet when consumed thoughtfully and in moderation. At Ace Wellness Center in Pune, the integration of Ayurvedic principles further supports the personalized inclusion of mangoes in one's diet, respecting both the medicinal qualities of this beloved fruit and the unique needs of those managing diabetes. By understanding the nutritional impact and combining traditional

2024.05.02 13:01 geneticlife Glutamate Interaction with Supplements

Click here to read my full article on glutamate:

GABA levels: Glutamate is the precursor for GABA, the main inhibitory neurotransmitter. GABA is like the “stop” while glutamate is the “go”. Too little conversion to GABA could mean too much glutamate. Does this play a role in depression? A new study shows that the ratio of GABA to glutamate does not play a role in depression. The study looked at patients with major depressive disorder before and after taking an antidepressant (or placebo). The results showed no relationship between changes in GABA and glutamate from the antidepressant related to changes in depression.[ref]
Agmatine: Glutamate levels in the hippocampus increase when animals are chronically exposed to opioids. Agmatine was able to attenuate the increased glutamate levels due to chronic opioid administration.[ref] Agmatine also helps with neuropathic pain by blocking NMDA glutamate receptors.[ref]
Related article: Agamatine supplements for neuropathy and mood
Riboflavin (vitamin B2): Riboflavin can reduce the release of glutamate from nerve terminals.[ref] This may be why riboflavin is effective in preventing migraines in some people.[ref]
Related article: Riboflavin genes
Saffron: A review of animal studies found that saffron “appears to be able to regulate glutamate levels, reduce oxidative stress, and modulate Aβ and tau protein aggregation.”[ref]
Related article: Saffron extract
N-acetylcysteine (NAC): NAC has been shown to reduce neuronal glutamate release. Animals show that this is due to the cysteine replacing glutamate in glial cells, which impacts the amount of glutamate in the synaptic cleft. NAC may also be reducing neuroinflammation and thus impacting glutamate levels.
In people addicted to cocaine, NAC decreases glutamate levels, and in people with schizophrenia, NAC is being investigated as an add-on to current medications.[ref]
Nigella Sativa (Black Cumin Seed): Nigella Sativa seed has been used for thousands of years as a natural remedy and for food preservation. In animal models of epilepsy, nigella sativa has antiepileptic effects. A study in rats showed that nigella sativa increased glutamate and GABA in different areas of the brain.[ref] I’m not exactly sure how the study would apply to humans, but I included it to show that nigella sativa could be affecting amino acid neurotransmitter levels including glutamate.

2024.05.02 12:40 BasketCivil323 Better Days Co (better hormones)

Anyone have any insight? Background; I am 34 (F) have had three pregnancies, two c-sections, two year long lactation periods and I’ve been neither lactating or pregnant for 11 months.
I have horrible PMDD. Anxiety, night sweats, irritability, bloating, exhaustion…all approx 3-5 days before my cycle starts. I know exactly when I’m ovulating monthly. My cycles are 26-27 days long. The only time they have ever varied outside of that is when I was lactating.
I have done a decent amount of research on supplements than can help. I’ve had marginal success with Flo PMS vitamins. This past month I have been using the Better Days Co- Better Hormones supplement. I have had better success with my negative symptoms (mood improved, sleep quality improved, hardly any insomnia) however, my cycle is on day 32 and still no period. I had no issue with my cycle length when I took Flo.
My spouse has had a vasectomy. I’ve taken pregnancy tests; they’re re negative.
Ingredients of the two are below.
Flo- chaste berry, lemon balm, Angelica root
Better Hormones- vitamin D, vitamin b6, chaste tree berry, kelp frond, milk thistle, ashwaganda, L-theanine, eleutherero, ginger root powder
I am happy about the product of Better Days over all; I just really dislike not knowing when my cycle is going to start. Is this a “keep taking it and it’ll get better” situation? Or is it a “stop taking this is breaking you” situation.
