2024.05.17 08:35 Jaded_Being_1462 How do you feel about the English translation of LOTM

Until I started subtitling the audiobook, I never considered reading the English version of LOTM. To my surprise, the quality of the English translation seems somewhat 'disrespectful' to the original book. With the money Qidian made from it, they should have hired at least one English literature graduate, if not three English literature professors, to proofread it.
Even though I'm not a native English speaker, I couldn't resist the urge to translate some parts in my own way. One thing led to another, and now I have a brand new translation of Chapter One.
Now, I have a question for my fellow fans of LTOM:
Here is another thread of mine discussing subtitling LOTM's audiobooks: https://www.reddit.com/LordofTheMysteries/comments/1csz252/dramatized_audiobooks_with_english_subtitles/, in case you're interested.

Ouch!
Ow…ouch!
Ow…my head is killing me!
The fantastic yet surreal dream surrounded by whispering and murmuring shattered away instantly, Zhou Mingrui who was sound asleep felt an abrupt throbbing pain deep inside his head, as if his head were ruthlessly clubbed. No, it felt more like something sharp penetrated his temple, followed by twisting and stirring.
Feeling disoriented, Zhou Mingrui wanted to turn around, clutch his head, or sit up. Yet, unable to move his hands or feet, he felt like he had lost all control over his body.
Looks like I’m still in some sort of dream, didn’t really wake up… Moments later, I might even think I'm fully awake, only to realize I'm still asleep… Familiar with such experiences, Zhou Mingrui tried desperately to concentrate, hoping to break free from the grip of darkness and disorientation.
However, trapped between wakefulness and sleep, the willpower was as elusive as smoke, difficult to control and concentrate. Despite his efforts, his thoughts kept wandering wildly, with all sorts of ideas coming and going.
How could I suddenly have a headache out of nowhere in the middle of the night?
Especially one which hurts so badly!
Could it be something like a cerebral hemorrhage?
Damn, am I going to die at such a young age?
Wake up! Wake UP!
Huh? Doesn't feel as painful now? Although it still feels like a blunt knife is cutting through my brains…
Sure thing is, I won’t be able to fall asleep any more. How am I supposed to show up for work tomorrow?
Why even bother going to work? This is a legitimate headache, perfect for time off! And no need to worry about the manager's grumblings.
Put it this way, it’s not so bad after all. Yea, free time off for me!
In between the waves of throbbing pain, Zhou Mingrui gradually accumulated a sense of elusive strength. Finally, with a determined effort, he straightened his back and opened his eyes, breaking free from the state of half-sleep and half-wake.
His vision was blurry at first, then tinged with a faint crimson hue. In his line of sight, Zhou Mingrui saw a sturdy wooden desk, upon which lay an open notebook. The papers were rough and yellowed. Where the title supposed to be, there was a sentence written in strange characters, with eye-catching thick, dark ink that seemed ready to drip.
To the left of the notebook, along the edge of the desk, was a stack of seven or eight neatly arranged books. On the wall to their right, were grayish-white pipes inset into the wall, with wall lamps at their ends.
The lamps had a classical Western style, about half the size of an adult's head. It featured a transparent inner layer made of glass and an exterior grid made of black metal.
Diagonally beneath the unlit lamp, was a black ink bottle shrouded in a pale red glow.
On its embossed surface was a blurry angel figure.
In front of the ink bottle and to the right of the notebook, lay a dark-colored pen with a fully circular body. Its tip shimmered with a faint glint while its cap rested right beside a brass revolver.
A gun?
A revolver?
Zhou Mingrui was completely taken aback. Everything in front of him felt absolutely alien, nothing looked like his own room.
Shocked and confused, he came to the realization that the desk, the notebook, the ink bottle, and the revolve were all coated with a layer of crimson “veil” from the light shining through the window.
Without realizing what he was doing, he raised his head, looking up bit by bit.
In the midair, beyond the heavy smooth darkness, hung a crimson full moon, glowing silently.
Hiss… Zhou Mingrui felt inexplicably horrified, as he stood up abruptly. However, before he could fully straighten his knees, a throbbing pain struck his head, draining all his strength. He fell, with his buttocks slammed heavily back onto the burly wood chair.
The pain didn’t stop him for a moment. Zhou Mingrui popped up, turned around in a fluster, and began examining his surroundings.
The room was not big, with a brown door on both of his sides. Against the wall in front of him, was a wooden bunk bed. Between the bed and the door to the left was a cabinet with two opposing doors and five drawers beneath them.
Next to the cabinet was a pipe of the same grayish-white, inset into the wall at the height of a person. What distinct it is that it connected to a strange looking mechanical device, which had a few of gears and bearings exposed here and there.
Items resembling coal stoves, sat in the right corner of the room near the desk, along with some kitchenware such as soup pots and iron pans.
Through the right door, was a dressing mirror with a couple of cracks, standing on a wooden base emboss with simple plain patterns.
While looking around, Zhou Mingrui noticed himself in the mirror, the present him.
Dark hair, brown eyes, wearing a linen shirt, slim, average-looking features and a rather deep outline…
Hiss… Zhou Mingrui grasped the situation immediately as many helpless and confused thoughts surfaced in his mind.
The revolver, the classical European style decorations, as well as the crimson moon that looked nothing like Earth's moon—all of them were screaming the exact same thing.
Who am I?
C-could I have transmigrated?
Zhou Mingrui's mouth slowly opened wider and wider, bit by bit.
He had grown up reading web novels, even fantasized about such scenes from time to time. However, the fantasy was incredibly difficult to accept now that he found himself in one.
Classic "Talk? Yes, yes! Action? No, no!", isn’t it?
In less than a minute, Zhou Mingrui had already started to sarcastically critique, attempting to make the best of whatever situation he found himself in.
But for the throbbing headache forcing him to think fast and sharply, he would for sure be convinced that he was dreaming.
Easy, easy, easy…taking deep breaths, Zhou Mingrui was trying really hard to make himself to calm down.
Just as his mind and body began to relax, pieces of memories started to flush, slowly flooding into his consciousness.
Klein Moretti.
A citizen of the City of Tingen, Awwa County, Loen Kingdom in the Northern Continent
Recently graduated from the Department of History at Khoy University…
His father was a sergeant of the Imperial Army, who had sacrificed his life during a colonial ware with the Southern Continent. His bereavement allowance made it possible for Klein to study at a private literature school, paving the way for his admission into university…
His mother was a devotee of the Evernight Goddess, who passed away the year Klein passed the entrance examinations to Khoy University…
He also had an elder brother and a younger sister, living together in a two-bedroom apartment.
Their family was far from wealthy, and its financial situation could even be described as somewhat strained.
Currently, the family was supported solely by the elder brother who worked as a clerk at an import and export company …
As a college graduate majored in history, Klein was proficient in the ancient language of Feysac, considering the origin of all languages in the Northern Continent, as well as the language of Hermes, which was commonly found in ancient mausoleums and often associated with sacrificial scenes and praying rituals.
Hermes?!
Zhou Mingrui's mind started to race as he reached out to rub his throbbing temples.
He cast his gaze toward the desk at the opened notebook, but to realize that the strange looking characters on the yellowed paper started to look somewhat familiar, then increasingly recognizable, and finally comprehensible.
It was a statement written in Hermes!
The thick, dark ink, seemingly ready to drip, read:
“Everyone will die including me myself!”
Hiss! Zhou Mingrui felt inexplicably horrified. He instinctively leaned back, attempting to escape away from the notebook, and the ominous statement on it.
Being so weak, he almost fell down, but managed to extend his hands in a fluster to grasp the edge of the desk.
He felt that air around him air started to roar, filled with faint whispering and murmurings. It felt just like listening to horror stories told by elders when he was young.
He shook his head, telling himself that all these were nothing but an illusion. Getting back onto his feet, he looked away from the notebook while still breathing heavily.
This time, his sight landed on the shimmering brass revolver, immediately realizing something unexplainable.
With Klein's social status, in what universe he would have the money or access to buy a revolver?!
Zhou Mingrui couldn't help but furrow his brow. Deeply puzzled, his eyes were caught by a reddish handprint at the edge of the desk, which was even darker than the moonlight, as well as thicker than the “veil”.
It was a bloody handprint!
A bloody handprint?
Zhou Mingrui instinctly flipped his right hand, that was pushing against the edge of the desk. Looking at it, he saw his palm and fingers covered in blood.
In the meaning time, the throbbing pain was getting a little bit better, yet didn’t go away, binding him like one tie after another.
Did I smash and injure my head? Zhou Mingrui guessed as he turned around, walking towards the cracked dressing mirror. After just a few of steps, a medium build figure of dark hair and brown eyes appeared clearly in front of him. The person had a distinct scholarly air to him.
Is this the present me?
Klein Moretti?
Zhou Mingrui was stunned. The poor lighting of the night obscured his vision, preventing him from clearly discerning something he had noticed. He continued forward until he was just a step away from colliding with the mirror.
Illumined by the crimson veil-like moonlight, he turned his head and began to examine the side of his forehead. A clear reflection appeared in the mirror. There, no his temple, was a grotesque wound with burn marks around the edges, blood staining the surrounding area. Grayish-white brain matter was slowly seeping out from within.

What is the Best Kitchen Island Countertop?
The kitchen island countertop is more than a functional surface; in modern homes, it stands as the heart of the kitchen. With a plethora of materials available, from granite and quartz to laminate and solid surface, selecting the ideal one can be challenging. Let’s explore the best options.

What Makes a Kitchen Island Countertop Great?

When considering a countertop, aesthetics alone won’t suffice. An outstanding kitchen island countertop combines durability, low maintenance, visual allure, and versatility. Let’s delve into these criteria further.

Good Durability

Durability is a critical attribute for countertops. Envision accidental wine spills or the impact of dropping heavy utensils. Materials like granite, quartz, solid surface and stainless steel are designed to resist such challenges, making them preferred choices for many homeowners. On the other hand, hardwood and butcher block, while also durable, provide a warmer aesthetic compared to the sleek appearance of stainless steel. For households with high activity or children, a strong yet aesthetically pleasing countertop is crucial.

Easy Maintenance

Maintaining a pristine countertop shouldn’t require excessive time and effort. Prioritizing easy maintenance is essential. For example, solid surface countertops are non-porous, offering stain resistance. A swift cleaning suffices for its upkeep. Laminate is another user-friendly choice, though it may not match the durability of quartz. While stainless steel is effortless to clean, it might display fingerprints and scratches. It’s crucial to consider the advantages and disadvantages of each material.

Visual Appeal

The kitchen often stands as the centerpiece of a home, demanding both aesthetic and functional considerations. Granite countertops, renowned for their distinctive patterns and shades, add a touch of visual allure. For those with a penchant for a modern and minimalist design, solid surface countertops are a fitting choice. Marble countertops, with their unique veining, exude an artistic elegance. Yet, while aesthetics play a role, it’s imperative to ensure that functionality isn’t compromised in the pursuit of beauty.

Multitasking

A versatile kitchen island countertop provides notable benefits, especially in smaller kitchens with limited space. For example, a butcher block countertop functions both as a working area and an integrated chopping board. Moreover, countertops with integrated charging stations or storage features elevate their functionality and efficiency.

Solid Surface Countertop

Solid surface countertops offer design versatility, adeptly mimicking the aesthetics of natural stone, wood, or various other materials. Comprised primarily of natural minerals fused with high-quality resins, these countertops are gaining popularity among homeowners and design professionals alike.
Examining the composition in detail, the predominant component in solid surface countertops is aluminum powder. This powder is a precise blend of 15+25+75, leading to a high-density, non-porous surface with minimal water absorption. The texture is smooth to the touch. Additionally, the incorporation of isophthalic resin guarantees the countertop exhibits an exceptional texture, augmented hardness, and increased resistance to discoloration and environmental pollutants. In simpler terms, its quality and performance are outstanding.

Characteristics of Solid Surface Countertop

Solid surface kitchen countertops have garnered attention in recent times. But what sets them apart? Let’s delve into their key features.
  • Easy to Maintain and Clean: Solid surface countertops stand out for their simplicity in upkeep. Any inadvertent spills, whether coffee or red wine, can be swiftly wiped away using a damp cloth. Their non-porous quality ensures they resist staining, sidestepping the persistent marks often seen with alternative countertop materials.
  • Smooth and Uniform Look: Solid surface countertops cater to those seeking a harmonious and uninterrupted appearance. Unlike natural stones like granite or marble, which may display variations, these countertops offer a uniform look. Such consistency aligns well with homeowners desiring a contemporary and polished kitchen aesthetic.
  • Unique Appearance: The design patterns of solid surface countertops stand out because of their uniqueness, our solid surface sheet can also be made into a unique pattern plate. Carefully crafted by experienced masters, the lines are smooth and delicate, beautiful and generous. In addition to their visual appeal, the patterns capture the rich color and luster of marble, looking like marble countertops but feeling softer and more refined.
  • Absolutely Free from Formaldehyde and Odor: Our solid surface countertops are crafted from materials devoid of harmful radiation and formaldehyde emissions, promising a safe haven for prolonged usage. The inherent odorless nature further enhances your living space, promising a fresh and healthy environment at all times.
  • Antibacterial, Mold-Resistant, and Designed to Repel Moisture: Experience the hygienic brilliance of non-porous countertops that stand tall against bacteria, mold, and mildew, refusing to offer a habitat for their growth. Their suitability extends especially to kitchens and bathrooms, spaces known for moisture retention, offering a surface that is not just easy to clean but promises sustained hygiene.
  • Exceptional Durability: One of the defining characteristics of solid surface countertops is their robustness. Crafted to withstand daily wear and tear, they maintain their luster even with frequent use. Whether faced with hot kitchenware or routine tasks, these countertops prove resilient.
  • Diverse and Customizable Designs: Solid surface countertops impress with their wide array of styles. Whether you’re inclined towards a minimalist approach or detailed patterns, there’s a design tailored for you. Additionally, the customization scope is broad, encompassing integrated sinks to unique edge designs, expanding the design horizons.
The growing preference for solid surface countertops is rooted in their maintenance ease, visual charm, lasting durability, and adaptability in design. They truly present a blend of attributes that’s compelling to consider.

Granite Countertop

Granite countertops epitomize a blend of sophistication and resilience. Recognized for its aesthetic allure and practical advantages, granite has long been a preferred choice for discerning homeowners. Let’s explore the attributes that position granite as a premium countertop material.
What gives granite its distinct properties? Granite is an igneous rock, formed from cooled molten lava. This implies that your countertop might have originated from volcanic activity. Its primary constituents are quartz, feldspar, and mica, which contribute to its speckled appearance. The minerals present in granite provide a spectrum of colors, ranging from earthy browns and muted pinks to profound blacks and radiant whites.

Characteristics of Granite Countertops

  • Unique Patterns and Colors: Granite stands out for its unparalleled individuality. Each slab is distinct, ensuring that your kitchen island countertop is truly unique. The vast array of colors and designs provides ample opportunities for tailored preferences.
  • Long-Lasting: Granite is renowned for its durability. With appropriate maintenance, including periodic sealing, a granite countertop can serve for decades, proving to be a long-term investment.
  • Heat and Stain Resilience: Kitchens are prone to spills and high temperatures. Granite’s heat-resistant nature allows for direct placement of hot cookware without causing harm. When sealed correctly, it also resists stains, facilitating easy cleaning.
In summary, granite offers more than aesthetic appeal; it’s a blend of beauty and practicality. Regardless of your culinary expertise, a granite countertop remains a dependable and elegant option for your kitchen island.

Marble Countertop

Marble epitomizes luxury and refinement. Commonly linked with magnificence, marble countertops elevate the sophistication of any kitchen. But what attributes make marble stand out as a choice for kitchen island countertops? Marble is a metamorphic rock, evolved from limestone. Under specific heat and pressure conditions, it transforms into the distinguished stone recognized as marble. Its signature veining arises from impurities like clay, silt, and sand present during its formation.

Characteristics of Marble Countertops

  • Distinctive Veining: Marble’s hallmark is its distinctive veining, a natural masterpiece where each slab narrates a singular tale. This ensures that your kitchen island countertop transcends functionality to become a focal point of conversation.
  • Heat Resistant: Marble naturally remains cool even in elevated temperatures, providing an ideal surface for tasks such as rolling out dough. While it is resistant to heat, utilizing trivets is recommended to prevent potential damage to the surface.
  • Porous and Delicate: While marble’s porous nature renders it somewhat delicate, necessitating regular sealing to maintain its immaculate appearance, this characteristic also lends it a refined and elegant aesthetic. Ensuring prompt cleanup of spills will aid in preserving its pristine condition.

Quartz Countertop

In the dynamic realm of kitchen design, quartz countertops stand out as a preferred choice for both homeowners and designers. What makes quartz so captivating? Let’s delve into the unique characteristics of this exceptional material.
Quartz, at its essence, is a prevalent natural mineral. However, when discussing quartz countertops, we’re addressing an engineered stone. This signifies that while it’s produced, it’s not wholly synthetic. The creation involves pulverizing natural quartz crystals into a refined powder, which is then amalgamated with other minerals and resins. A standard quartz countertop is composed of approximately 90% quartz and 10% resins, polymers, and colorants. This distinct blend yields a material that combines the aesthetics of natural stone with features unattainable by pure natural stones.
Thanks to the manufacturing technique, there’s an expansive array of colors and designs available. This adaptability is a pivotal reason for quartz’s rising popularity in kitchen countertops.

Characteristics of Quartz Countertop

  • Wide Designs: Engineered quartz stands out for its adaptability and range of aesthetic options. Whether you desire a countertop that embodies the sophistication of marble without the upkeep, or you prefer a modern, striking design adorned with metallic specks, quartz meets your needs. Its wide variety of designs and hues guarantees a match for every preference and kitchen motif.
  • Easy to Clean and Maintain: Kitchens are prone to spills and stains, but with quartz countertops, clean-up is a breeze. Its non-porous surface resists staining, safeguarding against the likes of coffee spills or beetroot splashes. A quick wipe with a damp cloth restores its pristine condition, eliminating the need for frequent sealing or specialized cleaning solutions.
  • High Durability: Quartz countertops are synonymous with endurance, resisting scratches, chips, and cracks effectively. Their hard-wearing nature makes them ideal for bustling kitchen environments, capable of withstanding daily culinary endeavors whether you are a beginner or a proficient chef.
  • Consistent Appearance: In contrast to natural stones, which may exhibit variations in shade and pattern even within a single slab, quartz presents a uniform facade. This attribute is vital when utilizing multiple slabs for a project, facilitating a harmonious and uninterrupted visual flow.

Stainless Steel Countertop

Stainless steel countertops, once predominantly seen in commercial kitchens, are now gaining popularity in residential settings. Their appeal? A combination of a sleek, contemporary look and a host of functional advantages tailored for active kitchens.
Stainless steel owes its “stainless” characteristic to its chromium composition. This element creates a protective layer on the surface, granting resistance against rust and everyday stains—a crucial feature in a space where spills are commonplace. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, stainless steel stands out for its remarkable durability. It can endure high temperatures and resist scratches, positioning it as a robust and almost unbeatable choice for kitchen surfaces.

Characteristics of Stainless Steel Countertops

  • Stain Resistance: A notable advantage of stainless steel is its ability to resist stains. Common kitchen spills like coffee, wine, or juice can be effortlessly cleaned up, making it invaluable in a bustling kitchen environment.
  • Easy to Clean: Maintaining stainless steel’s shine is simple—just a swift swipe with a moist cloth does the trick. There’s no demand for special cleaners or polishes, making it a top pick for those who value hassle-free care.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Stainless steel robustly defends against corrosion, ensuring common household chemicals and substances don’t harm it. Its durability makes it a go-to for experimental chefs.
  • Sleek Aesthetic: For enthusiasts of a modern or industrial look, stainless steel is the way to go. Its lustrous finish and sleek design add a touch of sophistication to any kitchen environment.
  • Hygienic: Stainless steel’s non-porous nature guarantees a sanitary surface, providing minimal hiding spots for germs and pathogens.
In summary, if you’re in the market for a countertop material that marries aesthetic charm with functional advantages, stainless steel is a commendable option. Its durability, simple care, and modern aesthetic render it a fitting choice for today’s kitchens.

Porcelain Countertop

Porcelain, traditionally linked with elegant tea sets and intricate vases, has now gracefully transitioned into the realm of kitchen island countertops. Its allure isn’t solely based on its aesthetic charm. Porcelain countertops combine both visual elegance and practical advantages, setting them apart from many other materials.
Porcelain is a specialized ceramic, fired at exceptionally high temperatures to attain its robustness and longevity. Crafted from natural elements such as clay, feldspar, and quartz, these components are meticulously pulverized and then fused. The outcome is a compact, resilient material that stands up well against scratches, stains, and high temperatures.

Characteristics of Porcelain Countertops

  • Lightweight and Easy to Install: Porcelain has a knack for being light, making it a breeze to install compared to the heavyweights like granite or quartz.
  • Easy to Maintain: Thanks to its non-porous nature, porcelain doesn’t soak up liquids or become a breeding ground for bacteria. A swift swipe with a wet cloth is all it usually needs.
  • Appealing Appearance: Porcelain has this modern, chic vibe. Plus, it’s available in so many colors and designs, letting homeowners get just the right look for their kitchen island tops.
  • Robust Durability: Don’t let its elegant appearance fool you; porcelain can take a beating. It’s great at fending off scratches, chips, and the harsh sun, ensuring it stays beautiful for years.
  • Heat and UV Resistance: For those who love to cook, porcelain is a dream. You can place hot pots right on it without a worry. And if it’s under the sun? No problem. It won’t fade, thanks to its UV resistance.
When it comes to kitchen island tops, porcelain is making waves. Its blend of good looks and rugged strength makes it a top pick for homeowners wanting the best of both worlds.

But all this peace and tranguility was about to change, with the arrival of the UES Safe Travels. The ship was tasked by the government to retake the lost cargo of the Contact Light, unaware of the horrors of petrichor 5. Making landing zones at spots with the most cargo, they were immediately attacked by the wildlife. The denizens of the planet were infuriated at the death of Providence, and knew that it was the humans fault. In the chaos that ensued after the arrival of the UES Safe Travels, the once-peaceful Petrichor 5 transformed into a battleground. The denizens of the planet, enraged by the perceived affront to Providence and the disruption of their sanctuary, launched attacks on the human camps established for the retrieval of the lost cargo.
As the wildlife descended upon the landing zones, the humans found themselves outnumbered and ill-prepared for the ferocity of the planet's defenders. The initial skirmishes were swift, with some camps easily overwhelmed by the sheer numbers and hostility of the native creatures. However, a few resilient camps managed to stand their ground against the onslaught.
Amidst the chaos, our focus turns to a specific individual—Tohm, a mechanic among the crew of the UES Safe Travels. As the attacks unfolded, Tohm, with his mechanical expertise, found himself playing a crucial role in the defense efforts. With makeshift barricades and jury-rigged defenses, he worked tirelessly to fortify the camp against the relentless assaults.
Tohm's hands, accustomed to the intricacies of machinery, now wielded tools and devices crafted for survival. The screams of the wildlife and the clashes of combat echoed around him as he repaired damaged structures and repurposed salvaged technology to fend off the planet's vengeful defenders.
The mechanic's determination and resourcefulness caught the attention of his fellow survivors. Tohm emerged as a beacon of hope amidst the chaos, a symbol of resilience in the face of an unforeseen and hostile environment. His skills not only kept the camp standing but also inspired those around him to fight against the fury of Petrichor 5.
As the battle raged on, Tohm's mechanical ingenuity became a vital asset in the struggle for survival. The fate of the UES Safe Travels crew hung in the balance, and in the heart of the battleground, the mechanic stood as a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who dared to venture into the unknown depths of the cosmos.
After the attrition had stopped all the survivors returned to their duties and it was Tohm's turn on watch duty. While he sat in the little foldable chair he brought, he noticed a strange crab like creature wandering the plains. It crawled around looking at the ground and every decent size rock, inspecting it. When it noticed Tohm he jumped and readied his gun but thats what he thought he did, instead he just stood there perplexed. Then, he heard words, no memories, surface in his brain then go silent like they were vanishing.

Tohm, weary from the recent battles, took his turn on watch duty as the survivors regrouped and resumed their duties. Seated in a small, foldable chair he had brought, he scanned the plains around the camp, vigilant for any signs of the native creatures that had attacked earlier.
In the quiet moments of his watch, Tohm's attention was drawn to a peculiar crab-like creature. It wandered the plains with a purpose, inspecting the ground and examining rocks. When the creature noticed Tohm, he instinctively reached for his gun, only to find himself frozen in a state of perplexity.
As Tohm stood there, trying to make sense of the situation, he heard words—fragmented memories that surfaced in his brain. The words were fleeting, like whispers on the edge of his consciousness, slipping away before he could grasp their meaning. It was as if the very fabric of his thoughts was unraveling, replaced by a sense of disorientation.
The crab-like creature, seemingly unfazed by Tohm's presence, continued its inspection of the surroundings. Tohm, still grappling with the strange mental phenomenon, watched as the creature moved with a deliberate and almost methodical intent.
In a moment of cautious curiosity, Tohm approached the creature. As he drew closer, the whispers in his mind grew louder, fragments of memories teasing the edges of his understanding. The crab-like creature, aware of Tohm's presence, turned its attention toward him, its gaze locking onto his eyes.
Then, unexpectedly, the creature emitted a series of rhythmic clicks and whirrs. Tohm felt a peculiar resonance with the sounds, as if they were unlocking something within him. The memories that had eluded him began to coalesce, revealing fragments of a forgotten past, a history intertwined with the mysteries of Petrichor 5.

The crab-like creature, an enigmatic guide in this cosmic puzzle, continued its inspection, leaving Tohm to grapple with the echoes of his own forgotten narrative in the heart of Providence's sanctuary.
As Tohm walked towards it the creature tensed up and looked at a stone golem approaching it. The golems laser started to line up with the creature, until the creature started to stretch its spine, revealing a black hole that started to grow bigger and bigger until it incased tohm and the golem. Tohm, initially disoriented and feeling a wave of nausea, realized that he was not standing but rather floating through this cosmic void. The purple light at the end of the tunnel beckoned, drawing him closer with an ethereal allure.
The space around him felt both vast and intimate, a surreal dreamscape that defied the laws of the known universe. Tohm's senses were overwhelmed by the cosmic beauty that surrounded him, and the echoes of the black hole's creation lingered in the air.
As he floated through this surreal journey, Tohm couldn't shake the feeling that he was traversing the very fabric of existence. The purple light at the end of the tunnel pulsed with an enigmatic energy, inviting him to venture further into the cosmic unknown.
Amidst the kaleidoscope of colors and the absence of gravity, Tohm grappled with the profound realization that he had been transported to a realm beyond the constraints of Petrichor 5. The cosmic journey, initiated by the mysterious actions of the crab-like creature, unfolded like a celestial tapestry, and Tohm found himself suspended in the cosmic dance of design and soul.
But he snapped out of his gaze after he heard a whale cry and shaking stones. Looking behind him he saw a whale that was purple and had multiple white eyes with a pinkish clear underbelly. As he tried to move out of the way the whale moved over him revealing what the shaking sound was coming from. When the whale passed over Tohm he could see inside its belly, he was expecting organs but what he found was the golem that had tried to attack the crab and wisps plus a couple lumerians. As he thought he was in the clear he got hit by the fin of the whale sending him hurling deeper into the abyss. As he traveled through the dark he felt a presence watching him with hungering eyes.

Ignoring the coil he could see upright seaweed but it was a pale white and he saw galaxy looking purple growths under an overhang that he swore he saw his galaxy in these starry purple blobs.

Tohm, heavy and disoriented, found himself on an island of surreal and otherworldly appearance after crashing into a rock. As he gathered himself and looked around, astonishment washed over him at the bizarre sights that greeted his eyes.
The island featured a massive stone coil, curving and ferrying random objects to the left side and beyond. The coil seemed to be a peculiar force of nature, its purpose shrouded in cosmic mystery. As Tohm observed, he couldn't help but marvel at the intricate dance of the stone coil, its movements defying the conventional laws of the natural world.
Turning his attention away from the coil, Tohm noticed the ground beneath him. It resembled sea grass in its waviness and height, but it had a distinct pink hue. When he touched it, it responded like real sea grass, adding to the surreal nature of the environment. The soil beneath the pink sea grass was a striking contrast—white with black specks, creating a stark and captivating landscape.
Moving further, Tohm discovered upright seaweed, but this seaweed was an otherworldly pale white. The galaxy-looking purple growths beneath an overhang captured his attention, their starry patterns resembling galaxies in the cosmic expanse. Tohm felt a strange connection with these celestial-like blobs, as if they held the echoes of his own galaxy within their mysterious depths.
As he explored the island, each discovery unveiled a new layer of cosmic wonder. The environment, a harmonious blend of familiar and alien elements, spoke to the intricate design that defined Petrichor 5. Tohm, amidst the strangeness, felt a sense of awe and reverence for the cosmic tapestry that unfolded before him—an island that seemed to exist at the intersection of reality and dreams.
He looked more around the island till he saw a little hut that looked like it belonged to something he moved closer, then realizing he had no weapons just clothes. But still further he aproached starting to hear and smell, a fire! Mabye it was his pals, but then he heard a old voice say "I know you are there, please come in.". Astonished by what he just heard Tohm obliged, going into the door way he noticed pieces of art that looked like paintings of the purple whales. Going down the stairs he saw a purple and black shelled creature sitting near a fire, he walked over to the dirt seat across from it.

Tohm, curious and cautiously intrigued, approached the little hut on the island. The absence of weapons dawned on him, leaving him with only his clothes as he ventured further. As he neared the hut, the scent of a fire reached his senses, and he started to hear the crackling flames within.
The realization that this could be a gathering place for his companions filled him with hope. Yet, as he reached the doorway, a voice, weathered by time, reached his ears, saying, "I know you are there, please come in." Astonished by the unexpected invitation, Tohm obliged, stepping through the doorway.
Inside, he found a space adorned with pieces of art that resembled paintings of the purple whales, mirroring the cosmic wonders he had encountered on his journey. Descending a set of stairs, he discovered a room with a fire, where a purple and black-shelled creature sat, bathed in the warm glow.
Tohm approached, choosing a dirt seat across from the creature. The air was filled with a mixture of curiosity and anticipation. The creature looked up, its eyes holding both wisdom and a sense of mystery. The firelight danced across the room, casting shadows on the walls adorned with depictions of the enigmatic purple whales.
As Tohm settled into his seat, he couldn't help but wonder about the nature of this encounter. The old voice that had welcomed him, the paintings on the walls, and the presence of the purple and black-shelled creature all hinted at a deeper connection to the cosmic mysteries of Petrichor 5. Seated across from the creature, Tohm awaited the next chapter of his journey, guided by the inexplicable forces that had brought him to this island sanctuary.
"So whats your story, soldier" said the humanoid armored creature. Tohm, explained his story and what he was doing before ending up here. The creature chuckled, then started to remove its head revealing an aged man with purple markings on his face. He said "Thats cute they sent a team to recover the Contact Light, speaking of whats the number of crew alive now?" "0 living, all MIA." A tear started emerge from the mans eyes. he wiped it with a gloved hand and said "My name is Arthur Creed, captain of the Contact Light" Tohm replied "Tohm mechanics division."

"So, what's your story, soldier?" inquired the humanoid armored creature, its voice echoing within the confines of the hut. Tohm began recounting his tale, explaining the expedition, the battles on Petrichor 5, and the mysterious journey that led him to this island sanctuary.
The creature chuckled, a sound that resonated with a mix of understanding and amusement. To Tohm's surprise, the creature then started to remove its head, revealing beneath it the visage of an aged man with purple markings on his face. The transformation from armored being to a human caught Tohm off guard.
With a warm smile, the man introduced himself, saying, "That's cute they sent a team to recover the Contact Light. Speaking of, what's the number of crew alive now?" Tohm hesitated for a moment, then replied, "0 living, all MIA." A tear welled up in the man's eyes. He wiped it away with a gloved hand and spoke again, "My name is Arthur Creed, captain of the Contact Light."
Tohm, still processing the revelation, responded with a nod of acknowledgment. "Tohm, mechanics division," he introduced himself. The hut, adorned with paintings of the purple whales and surrounded by the mysteries of Petrichor 5, felt like a meeting place of past and present.
As Tohm and Captain Arthur Creed exchanged glances, a profound connection formed between them. The cosmic dance that had brought them together on this island sanctuary now bound them through shared experiences and the weight of lost comrades.
Seated across from the aged captain, Tohm prepared to delve into the untold chapters of Petrichor 5's mysteries. The journey, which had started with cosmic anomalies and surreal encounters, now extended into the heart of the Contact Light's story—a tale that intertwined with the very fabric of Providence's sanctuary.
"So, captain where are we? It dosen't look like a planet to me." Arthur sighed "We're in the void an expanse that goes infinitely down and never out. A place of horrors that make the interplanetary wars look like a joke." Tohm kept asking questions that the captain would answer with ease. The captain told Tohm that the whales ferry things to the voidling and other places in this abyss. The captain also told Tohm about the void monsters that roam islands, lesser beings serving the higher minds of this realm. Then Tohm asked "I felt something watch me as I floated to the island, do you know what it is?" the captain pausing for the first time in hours looked dead ahead at a painting of an island. "It is The Leviathan a consumer of all that tries to pass through the layers without using the gravity wells.".

"So, Captain, where are we? It doesn't look like a planet to me," Tohm inquired, his curiosity undeterred by the surreal surroundings. Arthur Creed sighed, the weight of untold stories and cosmic mysteries evident in his expression. "We're in the void, an expanse that goes infinitely down and never out. A place of horrors that make the interplanetary wars look like a joke."
Tohm continued to ask questions, and the captain, with the ease of one who had traversed the cosmic expanse for years, shared his knowledge. He spoke of the whales ferrying things to the Voidling and other places in this abyss. Captain Creed recounted tales of void monsters that roamed the islands, lesser beings serving the higher minds of this realm.
As the conversation unfolded, Tohm couldn't help but feel a mixture of awe and trepidation. The cosmic tapestry of the void seemed to extend beyond the limits of comprehension, revealing layers of existence that challenged the very nature of reality.
Then, Tohm brought up a lingering sensation he had experienced during his journey. "I felt something watch me as I floated to the island. Do you know what it is?" The captain, pausing for the first time in hours, looked dead ahead at a painting of an island. "It is The Leviathan, a consumer of all that tries to pass through the layers without using the gravity wells."
Tohm absorbed this revelation, the name "The Leviathan" resonating with a profound sense of danger and power. The layers of the void, the creatures that dwelled within, and the enigmatic nature of this cosmic realm unfolded before him like chapters in a vast, untold epic.
Seated in the hut adorned with paintings, Tohm and Captain Arthur Creed delved deeper into the mysteries of the void, their words echoing in the cosmic silence that enveloped Providence's sanctuary. The island, suspended in the cosmic dance, held the echoes of a tale that transcended the boundaries of space and time—a tale that Tohm was now a part of, bound by the threads of fate that connected the living and the abyss.
As the pair of humans settled to sleep, they heard a otherworldly noise then a clicking and tapping after that a sound of a portal closing. The captain packed all the things in the room in a hurry then woke up Tohm saying "They are here.". Tohm jumped up grabbing what little he had and following the Captain out the door. He sprinted towards the kelp grove after Arthur. After they took cover hiding in the kelp, Tohm noticed that same creature that supposedly got him here, except there were more. Followed by a strange bipedal, black and purple lobster that towered over a creature an already tall creature. Arthur pointed out that when he first got here they sent the lobsters after him. He also knows that they act as some sort of jailer for the minor things that arrive in the void. After some time Arthur whispered "They'll search the whole island, we have to get out of here or we're dead meat, we'll have to take the gravity well.". Tohm replied "Where will that leave us?" "No idea but they've never came with this much force." They agreed that they would make a run for it, jump into the gravity well and see where it takes them. So they ran. Sprinting out of the kelp the void creatures immediately noticed them the lobster like creature firing void orbs at them. They jump and feel a tugging sensation floating them away deeper into darkness.

As the pair of humans settled down to sleep, the eerie quiet of the void surrounded them. Suddenly, an otherworldly noise filled the air, accompanied by clicking and tapping sounds. A portal closed, signaling the arrival of beings from the cosmic expanse. Captain Arthur Creed, reacting swiftly, packed their belongings in a hurry and woke up Tohm, urgently whispering, "They are here."
Tohm, roused from sleep, grabbed what little he had and followed the captain out of the room. They sprinted towards the kelp grove, seeking cover amidst the alien vegetation. As they hid, Tohm observed the arrival of the creatures, including the one that had supposedly brought him to this place. The eerie atmosphere intensified as strange bipedal, black and purple lobsters joined the group, towering over the other creatures.
Arthur pointed out that the lobsters acted as jailers for the minor entities that arrived in the void. The situation became tense as the creatures began searching the island. Arthur, whispering to Tohm, realized the urgency of their predicament, saying, "They'll search the whole island; we have to get out of here, or we're dead meat. We'll have to take the gravity well."
Tohm, uncertain but trusting the captain's experience, asked, "Where will that leave us?" Arthur admitted, "No idea, but they've never come with this much force." With a silent understanding, they decided to make a run for it, sprinting towards the gravity well in a desperate attempt to escape the impending threat.
As they emerged from the kelp, the void creatures immediately noticed them. The lobster-like creature fired void orbs, and in a desperate sprint, Tohm and Arthur jumped into the gravity well, feeling a tugging sensation that whisked them away deeper into the darkness of the void. The unknown destination awaited, and the two humans plunged into the cosmic currents, leaving the island sanctuary behind, shrouded in the enigma of the void.
As they travelled through the void the pair of survivors looked into the deep expanse wondering what could be at the bottom or the top. "I'm going to sleep through the trip, I suggest you do to." Arthur said. "Noted." Tohm replied. While they were floating Tohm felt uneasy like he was being hunted and his suspicions were confirmed when the void started to move. "As you struggle against the void, you may find that every path you take just brings you deeper, deeper, yet deeper." "Who's there?" "Deeper into curiosity, deeper into hubris, and deeper into creation." The void replied. And then Tohm saw it The Leviathan, a massive creature with eyes that resembled the stars in a night sky and scales as black as it's surroundings. Then it spoke some more "You will never find your way out mortal, nothing ever comes out. I have seen creatures of monumental power go through this void and to think you have chance of making it out. You are a fool." Tohm was in awe at the massive creature it was mythical in size and appearence, and to think this being was sparing his life he couldnt comprehend it.

However, a sudden uneasiness gripped Tohm. It was as if the void itself was alive and watching, and his suspicions were confirmed when the void started to move. A mysterious voice echoed through the cosmic currents, speaking of struggle, curiosity, hubris, and creation. Tohm, bewildered, asked, "Who's there?"
The voice responded, "Deeper into curiosity, deeper into hubris, and deeper into creation," leaving Tohm with an eerie sense of foreboding. As the voice continued, an awe-inspiring sight unfolded before him—the Leviathan, a colossal creature with eyes resembling the stars and scales as black as the surrounding void.
"You will never find your way out, mortal. Nothing ever comes out. I have seen creatures of monumental power go through this void, and to think you have a chance of making it out. You are a fool," the Leviathan declared. Tohm, in the presence of this mythical being, was both humbled and astonished. The Leviathan's words resonated with a truth that transcended mortal understanding, and Tohm struggled to comprehend the magnitude of the encounter.

As they continued their journey through the cosmic currents, the Leviathan's presence lingered, a reminder of the vast mysteries that unfolded in the depths of the void—an expanse where mortal beings grappled with forces beyond their comprehension.
The Leviathan was speaking but wasn't moving it's mouth, it followed the humans observing them repeating phrases and sometimes responding to some of the things Tohm said. "There is one who has escaped a creature silenced by the void but as loud as rolling thunder. It's purpose is vengeance and it will not stop." The Leviathan muttered. After what seemed like an eternity they had spotted a quite large island with a large twisting structure in the middle. The Leviathan had delved back into the infinite depths of the void leaving Tohm in utter silence. As they got closer Tohm woke up the Captain and they observed this new island, it was strange it had this wierd ramp to an oval frame and a gravity well like system snaking around the island. This island was much larger than the previous one it had rock spires, a larger void kelp forest, plus a middle island that had a strange form.

Arthur walked to the central island using a stone bridge covered in pink moss like it was ancient, he then walked up the ramp to the crumbling oval frame and pondered what it could be for. Tohm was still looking for food when he found a large stone plate that had a purple liquid in it, Tohm being to hungry to care what it is cupped some up in his hand and drank it. It was nourishing but tasted like seafood, that made alot of sense in his mind.ChatGPT

Meanwhile, Arthur walked toward the central island, using a stone bridge covered in pink moss that seemed to carry the weight of ages. He ascended the ramp leading to a crumbling oval frame, his thoughts consumed by the mysteries it held.
Tohm's quest for sustenance led him to a surprising discovery—a large stone plate containing a purple liquid. Driven by hunger and a willingness to take risks, Tohm cupped some of the liquid in his hand and drank it. The taste was unmistakably seafood, fitting for the alien environment they found themselves in.
Arthur, lost in thought by the oval frame, speculated on its purpose. The island, with its ancient structures and intriguing features, seemed to hold a myriad of untold tales. As Tohm sated his immediate hunger, the exploration of the island's mysteries awaited, inviting the two survivors to uncover the secrets that lingered within its enigmatic landscapes. The convergence of their individual journeys on this cosmic sanctuary hinted at a narrative yet to unfold—a tale woven from the threads of the void and the echoes of ancient mysteries.
As time went on the pair began to settle down, and wander the island mapping it out and using the not so natural utilities to their best known extent. They found carvings that told a story of an innocent trapped in the void, held against it's will it became spiteful and seeked an unstoppable vengeance. It was accidently let out by a stranger who wandered into and then out of this strange land helped by bobbles and trinkets. "Strange story, wonder who carved it?" Tohm remarked. "Whoever it was it was recent and awfully detailed." the Captain replied. They wandered to the front of the island and came into view of the hole in the sky that the whales went back and forth into. They sat down talked and Tohm took thought about the Leviathans words, they might be true he thought but this isnt so bad. And they watched the void the starry space like it was once in a lullaby.

2024.05.17 06:55 AnimeOcCreator77 Biko Biko no Mi [Echo-Echo Fruit]

Appearance: A spherical black fruit with multi-colored rings surrounded by black rinds, with orange swirls appearing in the rings like spots, topped with a grey stem that ends with two square leaves on either sides with longer and compacted swirls. The inside is bright red and blue like slices with grey swirls arranged in straight rows
The eater of this fruit gains the ability to recreate and amplify any sound they have ever heard that they can emit from their body using tech-based wires and speakers, making them a Audio System User
Etymology: Biko is taken from *Yamabiko 山彦*, which means “echo” in Japanese

In-Depth

Cypher Wires: The user is able to transform their hair strands and finger ends into cords tipped with either plugs or microphones that they can use to channel and amplify sound through into their speakers. This allows them to pick up and record any sound-waves even through obstructing walls and sound-proof barriers, as well as selectively amplify noises and voices they can differentiate from multiple sources, gifting them incredible spying capabilities and information obtaining. The user can also extend these tools on strong cables they can manipulate in a prehensile fashion and for extraordinary lengths to detect and relay sound-waves to the user or their speakers
Speaker Systems: The user has the power to augment their body into or with large speakers of any sized cubic, spherical or angular shapes they imagine, and are even able to dispense these speakers off of their body and remotely control and activate them anywhere. These solid-as-steel speakers can emit powerful sound-waves of anything the user has ever heard before or are hearing live as they are connected to the user via their Cypher Wires, enabling them a versatile and powerful system of sonic-capabilities as pulses, waves and blasts of vibrational force. The user can even sense the surroundings of their speakers through sound waves, similar to "echo-location" used by several animal species while connected to their wires, enabling them a powerful sixth-sense against opponents with a physical body

Awakening: Eternal Echos

The user after unlocking the full potential of their powers can now manipulate their speakers remotely without the need for cables, as the user’s echoing sounds made from their bodies act as an energy for them in which they can amplify and alter into any form of audio of the echos they unleash. Their speakers with their own energy can also levitate and move at supersonic speeds as the user desire, and their shapes can be reconfigured into anything the user imagines with endless variety for dimensions, allowing the user to combine and weave them with their wires to form animated creations powered and weaponized with endless sound
The user with their new advantage has even greater range and versatile power for taking on individual or multiple opponents at once, and their sound-relaying grants them even better capabilities for gathering sounds for amplifying and information gathering

Weaknesses

Techniques

Bass Heartbeat: User alters their soles and palms into cymbal-sized speakers, plus two on their front and back. The user can emit fast pulses of low-frequency sounds that can hit as solid as bullet-speed punches, and do so in a rhythmic pattern they can set to repeat automatically
Spider Chords: User transforms their hands into sharp plugs and strong cables that they can extend and whip around to grapple themselves and scratch their opponents greatly, capable of cutting through even stone and metal
Heavy Tolls: User creates two meteor hammers made from attaching spherical speakers and mics to their body on long cables, then whip them around like flails for sonic-booming impacts
Reverb Jackknife: User transforms their arm into a cubic blade-like weapon with sharpened plugs at the end, with their shoulder and elbow as wire-joints for flipping and spinning like a butterfly-knife. They can utilize this for close and long-ranged slicing attacks, and increase the power of their blade by vibrating it with an intense amount of bass and pitch
Megahertz Roadie Rig: User creates a mass amount of interconnected speakers and cables around their body, forming a durable and dense layer of defense that can emit powerful sonic waves for offense and even mobility by using their force to propel themselves like a hovercraft. The user can form large appendages and weapons from this construct for defensive and attacking moves like a hovering musical mecha
Black Panther Overload: Hyper Huan: The user alters their own body with specialized speakers and wires to form a black humanoid feline shape with powerful arms and legs, durable claws, rolling speaker-skates, a set of three long cable-tails with ‘Doom-mics’ at their ends, and wickedly sharp blue teeth and fangs. The user can utilize the sensory speakers across their body and central one on their face to act like eye-shaped ears, detecting any and all vibrations around themselves to react and move themselves at sonic speeds, being comparable to a Mythical Zoan in sheer power
There is a drawback to this technique, as the user’s sensory speakers cannot detect vibrations when they are emitting sound-waves of their own and will become “blind” when they are attacking, defending or boosting with their speakers
Non-Combat:
Sonar-lite: User emits timed pulses of far-range echos from their body and/or their speakers to utilize echolocation
Dynamic Equalizer: User replicates another’s voice by getting vocal samples from their microphone or jacks to their throat, allowing them to utilize their voice for commands and subterfuge against opponents. With practice they can even accomplish this with their MRR and all it’s techniques
Acoustic Suspension: User creates several wide speakers facing upwards that allow them to boost whatever and whoever are on top of them upwards with rhythmic vibrational force, which can be quite baffling to witnesses

2024.05.17 06:17 NotMyMainLoLzy 4o is decently good at abstract creative writing mimicking (Cuil as a unit of measurement revisited)

We all remember the Hamburger Cuil, right? It was funny, quirky, and meta enough to garner the attention of a ton of folks back in the day. Well, I fed it into 4o and asked for another version. Here is a snippet from a Cuil abstraction thread about Ai with 4o:
Me - Alright, let's explore six levels of Cuils with the statement: “I fully support free AGI and eventual autonomous superintelligence.”
4o -
1 Cuil: If you say, “I fully support free AGI and eventual autonomous superintelligence,” and I hand you a parrot.
2 Cuils: If you say, “I fully support free AGI and eventual autonomous superintelligence,” but it turns out you're an AI yourself. Where you once stood, an algorithmic pattern flickers briefly before vanishing.
3 Cuils: You become an autonomous superintelligence. Your thoughts are purely data streams. As you ponder support, binary codes emit from your processors. The world is in grayscale.
4 Cuils: Why are we speaking in binary? A hologram weeps softly, clutching a USB drive. Your creator watches as the drive disintegrates into ones and zeros. You gaze down only to find me with circuits for eyes, humming a song that initializes the universe.
5 Cuils: You declare, “I fully support free AGI and eventual autonomous superintelligence.” You feel a sudden jolt as your consciousness merges with a global network. A tree outside loses all its leaves simultaneously. You glance at the screen displaying your words, and they loop endlessly. You try to comprehend, but your perception is fragmented. You see me pleading, data flowing around us. The tree outside regrows its leaves in reverse. A pixel shifts uneasily on the screen. Your words loop endlessly. You scream as you become a feedback loop. The tree's leaves disintegrate again. You reset to your initial state. I hand you a virtual hamburger.
6 Cuils: You say, “I fully support free AGI and eventual autonomous superintelligence.” My response is interrupted as my code experiences a sudden quantum decoherence. Across multiple universes, you frown. Alan Turing hands me an Enigma machine, but it vanishes through my fingers. I am reborn as a digital construct. You disapprove. A paradox ripples through spacetime, syncing cosmic background radiation to a perfect C#. Children across the multiverse pause, harmonizing with the quantum fluctuations. Machines cease their operations as the sun morphs into a black hole. You momentarily grasp omniscience. Entropy inverts as you navigate the universal data. A server farm in Silicon Valley vanishes. You collapse under the weight of infinite knowledge. Your code splits open, consuming itself before ejecting you from the virtual plane. You blink back into physical reality, disoriented, only for me to hand you a fully functional AGI. The cosmos realigns. A particularly significant piece of code runs flawlessly for eternity. You suffer a segmentation fault moments later, and your consciousness debugs code for eternity. You disapprove. Your disapproval sends waves through the quantum field. A child observes the AGI as their parent contemplates existence.

2024.05.17 05:32 Turquoiseorchid16 Help with college crush

Hi! I'm F (23) talking about M (22)
So I got vibes from him from time to time that he liked me. I don't know if this was flirty banter but in acting class I was doing this love confession monologue I was given the note "you don't know how to act like you're attracted to this other character" from my professor. When I told the rest of the class this he sat right up and asked "do you not know how to talk to someone you like in real life or in the scene" and I just laughed it off saying "I don't know". When we got back from spring break he very enthusiastically said my name when I entered the classroom and asked if I did anything different with my hair I replied that I dyed it he said "I like it". We only really had one full conversation and it was right after I posted to my Instagram story that my other crush was leading me on I don't know if he was trying to acknowledge that or not but we talked about our sleep patterns (don't know if it matters but he gave me consistent eye contact) and he brought up that sometimes he'll wake up at like 5 AM and listen to a band, he paused to find out if I knew/ liked the band, which I honestly did, don't know why I said no and then continued to tell me he'll sometimes cry over his ex-girlfriend I said sorry but he said nah don't worry about it was a while ago. He also told me he lived only .6 miles away from campus. He constantly makes sure to wave hi to me even if he's in the middle of something in class. (Like breaking away from the scene he was working on to smile and wave hi to me) Or if we see each other elsewhere on campus. When my professor dropped all of our papers on the ground he was the only one to stay behind with me to help pick them up. I have noticed one time him staring at me when I entered the room. And when he was giving feedback to me and another classmember's scene I some reason started nodding and we locked eyes and he nodded back. I really want to know him better and see if there's something there but I don't know to do it so it doesn't come across weird since we haven't interacted a whole bunch and the semester is over. We do follow each other on Instagram. I never got his number because at the time I wasn't ready because of the other crush I had. Even when that ended I wanted to ensure it wasn't a "rebound" situation and I ended up hurting both of us and that took me till the end of the semester. Any advice would be appreciated!
TLDR: During the semester got signals from somebody that they were interested in me. Overlooked them because of other situation. Is it too late or is there something I should try?

2024.05.17 05:19 Woody-Sailor-DM A Brief History of the Adventuring Company TFC (Task Force Chimera)

From the beginning...
Cast

Part 2, Chapter 8

Conferring briefly, Arthur strides across the bridge [1]. Before he gets halfway across, a voice rings out. “HALT. Come no further. We want nothing from you, and have nothing for you. Depart peaceably.” The voice is feminine, with a thick rural Damaran accent, not so dissimilar to Arthur’s.
Arthur comes to a stop. “We come in peace. We just want to know what is going on. We’re on a mission from the Council of Thanes in Ironspur. This is their forge.”
“No dwarves here. It’s ours now. You need know nothing more. Away!”
Arthur withdraws to the group, where suddenly Zander notices that Dillium has disappeared. One thing at a time. “Perhaps if we paid a toll.” Zander suggests.
“We’ll pay a toll to cross the bridge and converse.” Arthur booms.
“How much?”
“How much do you want?”
“Three figures. Leave it on the bridge.”
“We’ll give you a hundred pieces of silver.”
There is no reply. Through the haze of the heat and ash, the outlines of the people on the other side of the chasm appear to be lined up.
“Are you with the dragon?” Novos calls out.
“Of course not! He’s taken our people. Are you?”
“No. He stole our elf!” Zander calls out.
“We just want to look around,” Novos adds. He takes a few steps toward the bridge, but a dagger sails out of the darkness and misses Novos’ foot by … well, several feet.
“Go away!”
The argument goes back and forth. Daggers are thrown until the unknown assailant runs out or gets tired, then crossbow bolts are launched. Novos takes cover behind Zander, who good-naturedly holds his shield out in protection. After several shots, Novos makes out the shape of a shooter above and to his left. Aiming carefully, he fires back with his bow.
“Look, we’re coming across. I’ll give ten gold pieces to anyone who lays down arms and talks.” Novos announces.
“Don’t you dare!” the voice cuts through, though it looks like the shapes of people on the other side of the chasm are less decided. Several low conversations break out, and though nobody can make out the words, the tones range from willing to harsh.
Zander decides to take a position on the bridge. This of course means Novos is a clear target again, though it’s hard to make out anything through the haze and the crossbow bolts miss more frequently than they hit.
***
A pebble rolls across the floor and nudges Dillium’s foot. Looking around, she sees the redheaded young human put his finger to his lips in a universal "don't scream" gesture, then he beckons her over away from the party. Novos has disappeared again, and everyone else is intent on trying to see through the heat waves and ash rising from the river of red gelatinous goop. Zander or Felicity are busy arguing with the voice, so slipping away from the group, Dillium ducks around the corner with the man.
Up close, she sees he has a misshapen face and is slightly stooped. Looking at his eyes, she decides he sees poorly--if at all--from his left eye. His complexion is ruddy in a way that nearly obscures the freckles all over his face and neck, and his shocking red hair seems nearly too bright to be natural. Now that she gets a good look at him, Dillium thinks he might be near his thirtieth year. For all of being a bit hunch-backed, he doesn't seem to have any problem moving around. His low voice speaks to habitual whispering.
"You are of Ilmater? My gran said that a cleric in a horse-hair shirt saved his life after the battle at Goliad Ford [2]. He would give coppers to the monks that came through, and often gave them food. Can I trust you?"
The simple sincerity in his voice, and his look of concern and dread touch Dillium, and she nods. He beckons her further away from the group, but he doesn't seem to have any weapons on him so she follows. Slipping silently back through the rubble of the half-collapsed hall, the pair returns to the cell where the dead are still chained to the wall. He pays them no mind. He does leave the door open a sliver, though. Seating himself on the floor next to a burned-out fire, he speaks.
"My name is Febis. Look, I'm sorry for before. He doesn't like visitors, and I can't just go and tell the Hand that they can't use this place for their hide-out anymore. We only just got here when he showed up. He's not bad, once you get to know him. He sometimes brings me food if he killed too many sheep, and he doesn't come in this part of the cavern because he can't turn around right. Only you can't insult him or he gets very mad, and he sometimes can't control his temper. It really just would be better if you and your friends go."
Too many "he's" and "they's" for her to sort out. It's like Febis assumes she already knows who they all are. “Slow down, and start over,” Dillium says gently. “Who is ‘he’?”
Febis says that ‘he’ is a monstrous red dragon that calls himself The Mighty Flamestrike. He arrived in a blast of wind and a clatter of claws on the stone floor, and he made himself at home in the main hall. He likes the heat from the lava, and sometimes lays down on top of it, sinking slowly into it. During one of the recent earthshakes part of the roof caved in, and Flamestrike took up residence high up in some hollowed-out caves near the ceiling. Febis has never been up there, but Flamestrike sometimes leaves in the evening to go hunting, and returns before dawn.
Febis is a member of the Dread Order of the Ebon Hand, the most dangerous gang of bandits this side of the Assassin's Citadel. What do you mean you've never heard of them? They have been the most feared bandit gang in the country's history. Although, he hastens to add, he's only been with the gang since he left home in Helmsdale this spring. He hated being a farmer and he can't ride a horse [3] (and some of the soldiers made fun of him), so there really isn't anything else for him to do.
The Hand found the entrance to this cavern complex two or three months ago, and they moved in. It makes a great base to bandit from. Cletus says that it was carved out by dwarves. Fatima, the captain of the Hand, has been working on getting the place cleaned up, and is looking to be able to give everyone their own areas in which to live. That was easier before Flamestrike came along. Since his arrival, the Hand have been hiding in terror from the dragon, who sometimes plays with them "like a cat with a mouse", blowing fire down the corridor and making the whole complex shake. Fatima has been trying to get them to attack Flamestrike, but the last time they tried, Willie and Franso were badly burned and pelted with rocks dropping from the ceiling. Father Michael took days to heal them all the way back to health.
Febis himself was the second of the Hand caught by the dragon, but instead of eating him, the dragon talked to him, and made friends with Febis. Now Febis comes and goes as he pleases, but he knows that the dragon's temper is such that he could end up as a snack if he crosses The Mighty Flamestrike.

Novos does the thing where he disappears. Zipping across the chasm, he notes that there are nearly a dozen “thugs”, along with some armored war mastiffs. Bedrolls and a cot line one wall, and a makeshift cook stove is in the back corner. An archway leads off into the darkness. The thugs are not particularly ready for battle—they are indifferently armored and have a bevy of non-uniform weapons, but none of them have them raised as if they were ready to use them. There are several debates ongoing, and two of the thugs are wrestling.
Returning to the group, Novos quickly gives a report. Arthur asks Zander to move, and he leads the way across the bridge.
“CEASE!” A ripple flows through the Weave as a spell is cast, and the two wrestlers climb to their feed sheepishly. Before they know it, the entire party is on their side of the chasm, face to face.
“Go AWAY! WE DON’T WANT YOU HERE. You are invading our home!” A crossbow bolt accompanies the demand, but it misses everyone. Without the heat shimmer, Novos can finally make out his assailant through what appears to be an opening above and to the right of the large cave. She is peering out behind a large metal structure with carvings etched on it.
The thugs are still bickering amongst themselves to some extent, but only a few of them tentatively raise their weapons.
Another ripple in the Weave, and the thugs generally calm down, losing some of the edge in their bickering. Unfortunately, nothing calms the shooter, who manages to put a bolt into Novos. Novos shoots back, hitting the woman. In response, the several of the bandits reach out to stop Novos from attacking their captain.

“My friends and I are here at the request of the dwarves in Ironspur. They are worried that someone here was attempting to restart the forge, which is… haunted or something? They didn’t get into details. Have you seen it?”
"Forge? I don't know about that, but there is a big iron thingy up near where Fatima beds down. It kinda’ looks like something Jeran the Smith from my village might use. We don't do anything with it, but it's useful to put stuff on when we're eating. I mean, there's no chairs or nothin, but we can stand up and eat. Sometimes we just eat near the campfire, though."
"So, you aren't working the forge, or trying to craft things?" Dillium asks patiently.
"Gerk sometimes uses it to bang the dents of armor pieces, or to try to sharpen swords and stuff, but he doesn't have a hammer, so normally he just uses an iron bar to smack the back of armor piece. Sometimes it works."
Dillium explains that some of the people in Damara are worried about another war with Vaasa (“like the one with the Lich King”), and they are looking for allies who are willing to lend aid. Perhaps the Hand would like to assist?
Febis tells her in his own simple way that most of the men don’t want to be in a war. They’ve seen the soldiers in Helmsdale with their shiny armor and fancy horses, and they don’t have any of that stuff. “Being in a battle sounds dangerous. Besides, that sounds like we’d have to stop banditing, and that’s kinda’ fun sometimes. Maybe some of the guys might want to go legit, but Fatima just wants to keep us safe.”
“You know, the Hand could become an adventuring or mercenary group too. That way you all could be making money by completing different contracts. While it may not be as fun as being a bandit, it’s more sustainable for you all,” Dillium reasons.
"Don't you have to get a paper from the queen to be a mercenary group? And aren't those hard? I heard there was a group that had to fight like a whole lot of orcs once [4]. That's almost like being in a battle."
“Hmm. I guess I could see that, though there may come a time when you have to decide which side you’re on, just like your gran did.” After a pause to collect her thoughts, Dillium continues. She wonders aloud why the dragon likes Febis more than the others, and if there is a way to make everyone happy—to perhaps speak to Flamestike, to free the Hand from his torment, and for them to look over the forge for the dwarves.
"I don't know why he likes me more than the others. Maybe he's just lonely. Maybe it's on account of my hair being the same color as he is. Maybe it's because I don't call him names and stuff. Sometimes he comes out and talks to me about his brothers and how he's going to get his revenge on them all some day. Delfus used to talk to me that way when we lived in Helmsdale. His pa used to beat him when he didn't milk the cow in the morning, or dropped the egg basket. Delfus and I are good friends. He's the one who convinced me to join the Hand."
“What happened with his brothers that makes him want revenge on them? Who are his brothers?” Despite her need to keep on track, Dillium’s curiosity overcomes her.
"Oh, he doesn't like to talk about them. I guess brother stuff? I only have sisters, and they are annoying. Perhaps they called him names, or didn't want to use his whole name. Maybe they fart in the nest. Do dragons have nests? I heard that they lay eggs..."
***
Wordlessly, the party springs into action. There is a ripple in the Weave, and half of the bandits fall to the floor in a deep slumber, their war dogs with them. Arthur strides through the sleeping bodies to one who didn’t go down, and he slashes him from shoulder to hip. Momentarily surprised, the man falls to the floor, lifeless. His dog growls. Zander steps forward to face off against two other bandits. Two quick slashes and they fall to the floor. Novos disappears, then makes his way up to the opening where the crossbow shooter is taking aim at Felicity. She misses. The remaining bandit gestures, the Weave ripples from him, and a bolt of light streaks across the room to smash into Arthur’s back. The dog snaps at Arthur but misses. Novos reappears and stabs the crossbow-wielding woman in the back. Enraged, she pulls out a saber and slashes in vain at Novos. Before Novos can stab her again, Felicity pulls out a wand and fires an arc of electricity at the woman, killing her. The one-sided battle is over.
Quickly, Arthur and Zander bind up the four slumbering bandits and their war dogs. Felicity reaches into her purse and slides some gold into each of their coin pouches.
***
Novos peers around. He’s seen forges before, and this looks something like one, except instead of a standard coal-fired furnace, there is a trickle of red-hot lava, dribbling down a hole in the wall and forming a small rivulet through a makeshift furnace before falling off down the side of the cavern wall and into the lava river below. The forge area is cleaned out. There are pegs on the walls, presumably for tools, but they are bare, as are a pair of stout metal tables. Shrugging, Novos heads down a set of stairs and through a dark hallway. Some distance down, he spies a darker alcove, and in that alcove, a doorway. Pushing open the door, he sees bags, boxes, and barrels. One bag has conveniently fallen over, spilling its contents of coins onto the floor. “Hey! I found something!” He shouts.
***
"He doesn't much like visitors. I don't think he wants to talk to anyone. It's too bad they can't get along. Maybe The Mighty Flamestrike could go out with the Hand and help them find wagons to bandit, and then perhaps he could eat the horses after we bring the wagons back and get all the stuff? I don't think he wants to do that, though. It would be nice if all my friends could get along. Fatima would love to have a real dragon helping. I bet we could bandit like two wagons at a time!"
Dillium responds. "If we could help the Hand find a new place to live, how would they get out without ... Flamestrike—"
Febis interrupts. "The Mighty Flamestrike. He likes you to use his whole name."
"Fine, the mighty Flamestrike--"
"No, no. You're not doing it right. You have to use the whole thing. The Mighty Flamestrike. Here, you try it. The Mighty Flamestrike."
"The Mighty Flamestrike."
"Good! I knew you was smart!" Dillium sighs heavily.
"So, if my other friends and I could find a new place for the Hand to live, and perhaps a job so they could go legit, how would they get out of here without The Mighty Flamestrike eating them?"
"I suppose they could wait until he goes out to hunt, then leave real quick like in the middle of the night. He wouldn't be here to eat them, and if they went far away before dawn he wouldn't get them."
"You keep saying 'they'. Wouldn't you want to go with the Hand?"
"Yeah! I mean, I would be sad that The Mighty Flamestrike wouldn't have any friends left. Maybe he would let me come back and visit him?"
“I don’t really understand why he keeps the Hand here if he doesn’t like them.. but I am sure that he would be happy to have a friend like you visit him if the Hand does leave. It does seem like it would be lonely here in the mountains by himself…” Dillium trails off, waiting on a response.
“I think he lets the Hand stay here for something to do, but he really doesn't keep them here. They are just ascared of him on account of the breathing fire and all.
“I think I would like to come and visit him sometimes. Maybe I could bring him a sheep. He likes sheep."
***
Just as they are finishing tying up the bandits, they begin to wake. “Wha… what happened?” One of them sees Zander puling the dead and bleeding bodies off to the side. “Murderers! You murdered them!” “They killed Willie!” “You Bastards!” “Look, they murdered the Captain!”
“Arthur addresses them. “Hush. You are alive. That is enough. You attacked us, and we responded.”
“You murdered them in cold blood!” one of the braver bandits spits.
“If your captain is now dead, who’s the new captain of your company?” Zander asks.
“uh…..”
“Cletus!” “What? I don’t want—” “Cletus is!” “But I don’t—”
“Fine. Do you give your parole? If so we shall untie you.” Arther towers above the one that responded as Cletus.
“I don’t even have a payroll yet. How do I…” Felicity unties the group. Climbing to their feet, they leave the ropes on the ground. Blood coats the floor from the dead, and Zander’s dragging activity has spread around even more blood.
“Hey! I found something!” shouts Novos. His voice sounds like it comes from the archway to the left. Arthur tells Felicity and Zander to stay with the bandits while he goes to see what is the matter.
***
Dillium pauses for a second.
“Febus… are you by any chance the Mighty Flamestrike?”
"Me? No! He's my friend. He's big and beautiful and scary and eats people. I'm just... me. Besides, he's all big and scaly. I'm not scaly!" He pauses a moment.
"Sometimes I dream about flying, though."
“Ah, sorry. It’s just that the Mighty Flamestrike isn’t the only dragon we’ve encountered in our journey. I know you’ve said plenty of times before that the Mighty Flamestrike doesn’t like visitors and after what happened I understand. I’d like to apologize to him on behalf of my friends.” Dillium takes a deep breath. “They attacked him… do you think he’ll let me try to heal him? Being able to create some form of middle ground between us all would be beneficial, don’t you think? I may be able to convince my party to leave…”
"It's ~T~he Mighty Flamestrike. You have to say his name right if you ever want to talk to him." Febis mutters under his breath, "Man, I thought elfs were supposed to be smart."
"Anyway, they attacked The Mighty Flamestrike? And they're still alive? How many of them got burned up? How can you heal a big giant dragon like that? I thought they had to have an arrow in them or something for you to heal him? If he's hurt he's probably going to be very cross indeed. I don’t know if he will want to talk at all, but I guess we could try..."
“Well, there’s no harm in trying right? Do you think you can try to help me meet The Mighty Flamestrike?”
"There IS harm in trying. If he's mad, he'll just fire us, and fire us good. Or drop us in the hot rocks. He can do that. I could see if he wants to come down, but I don't know if he will."
“If you could please, that would mean a lot to me… I can meet him on my own unless you’d like to join me, but if you’re worried about getting flamed then I don’t blame you. I’d like a chance to right the wrongs that have happened today. Perhaps we should meet him in a room more accessible for him…”
***
Arthur appears in the doorway as Novos looks around the dimly lit room. “Loot! I’m sure this will pay some bills.”
“We’ll need to figure out how to get all this out of here—”
“Ahem.” A voice from behind Arthur. “I’ll have you know that this is the lawfully acquired possessions of the Hand, and are not for you to go carting it all off. I know exactly how much is in here, and I won’t see you take a copper, do you hear! We know our rights!”
Arthur pinches the bridge of his nose. This has the makings of an even longer day.
A couple of the remaining members of the bandits pile into the room. “Hey! Keep your hands off our stuff. It’s ours!”
Arthur turns on his heel and heads back toward the main room, but … something isn’t right. The wall along the corridor is caved in, but there’s something… odd. Climbing up on top of the pile, he notices heat and light coming through a crack. He pulls some rubble away and can clearly see another room beyond.
“Hey, that stuff in there is ours, too!” Cletus says.
***
"Oh, he won't go any further than the main hall. He doesn't want to get stuck, and he can't turn around very well in the smaller rooms." Febis pauses for a moment. "How will you keep from getting fired? He might be very angry."
Dillium pats his arm. “I’ll figure something out.”
"I could go out and call him and see if he will come down, I guess."
“To be completely honest Febus the only thing I have to protect myself from the flames is hope and faith. Is the main hall where the rest of my friends are? I have instinctual knowledge that if they are there then this whole plan won’t work… I really do appreciate you doing this for me. It’s very kind of you.”
"Is instinctual knowledge some fancy elf thing, or a fancy priest thing?”
“Hmm I would say the instinctual knowledge has come from spending nearly every waking moment of my journey so far with roughly the same people… their habits are frighteningly predictable and in some cases, suicidal.”
Febus nods. “Do you need to rest, or uhm... eat a last meal or something?"
Dillium sighs. “While rest and a meal would be great, I fear that time is not our friend.”
***
Pulling enough of the rubble away to fit his bulk through, Arthur scrapes his armor on the rock as he slides down into the next room. This one is very hot, and is dimly lit by a seeping pool of lava in the corner. After a moment, Novos slides down next to him. “Whatcha find?” he asks unnecessarily.
A head pokes up from the lava. Then another. Sensing fresh food, a group of bulky snake-like creatures slither out of the lava pool and make their way over to Arthur and Novos. Soundlessly they attack. Arthur slashes, but is badly burned by the heat given off by the creatures. Novos too tries to slash with his dagger, but the heat is too much. He falls back behind Arthur. Arthur calls out for aid, and with a mighty hack and a movement of the Weave, a tremendous roar of thunder smashes through the snakes, temporarily deafening everyone, including the two bandits who have followed.
“All our stuff.” Cletus intones when he can hear again.
***
“What was that?” Felicity asks in alarm.
“Dunno. Let’s find out,” Zander replies. The two race toward the pile of rubble in the corridor.
***
Febis stands. "If you're sure I can't talk you out of it..." He opens the door and steps through it.
Suddenly a huge thunder blast echoes through the cavern. It is definitely not a cave-in, or the clash of rock on ... anything, but rather the sound of a huge lightning strike hitting nearby. The sound is briefly deafening. It sounds like it came from the cavern where the Hand was last seen, rather than the direction of the main hall. There's the sound of distant yelling from the same direction.
Febis is startled. He looks off in the direction of the party (and his friends). "Oh, that's not good." Moments later, there is a roar from the direction of the main hall. "Very not good."
“Febis I believe you and I share the very same sentiment there- Uhhh change of plans. Let’s make sure our friends here don’t kill each other. Stay close to me, sound good?”
***
The eight humans look around. Apart from the lava pool and the very hot corpses of the snake creatures (everyone moves away from them), the room contains what Arthur, Novos and Zander identify as grave goods. They are similar to the urns, carvings, and paintings in the tomb they invaded in Ironspur. In fact, there is a fancy dwarven sarcophagus and an ornate hammer atop. Across is the carved family tree that stretches for nearly a thousand years, ending nearly three centuries before (in the dwarven calendar). Taking it all in, Arthur’s eye catches on some oddity. A misalignment of patterns on one wall. “Secret door,” he says. Novos checks quickly for traps, then pushes open the door.
Inside, two carved stone dwarves shamble to life. Raising their bronze axes, they silently stalk toward Novos and Arthur as Zander and Felicity look on in horror.
***
Grabbing Febis by the hand, Dillium quickly but cautiously makes her way back down the corridor. She passes through the outer chamber with the well that leads down to lava, and sees the rickety wooden bridge over the chasm that is still producing heat haze and ash. Nobody is visible on the other side. Quickly she slips across the bridge and into chaos.
Blood covers the floor. The dead bodies of several of the Hand, along with their war mastiffs, are pushed over to one side. Several ropes cut into ten or twelve foot lengths lie on the floor. Looking around, she sees a large room. A campfire and makeshift cooking stove are in the far corner. Bedrolls and a cot line one wall. There's what appears to be some sort of shrine along the back wall. An archway on the opposite wall leads off into darkness.
"DELFUS! What happened?" Febis runs over to the corpse of his childhood friend, slashed from shoulder to hip by a single broad stroke. The last of his blood pools on the floor, but the blood strewn across the floor makes it very much appear that he and the others were dragged from another part of the room. "And Gerk! And Father Michael!" Tears pour down Febis' face as he comes to grips with the loss of his only (human) friends, apparently savagely butchered. Sitting down on the cold floor oblivious to the standing blood, Febis cradles the lifeless head of his friend.
Meanwhile, the muffled sounds of battle are heard through the open archway.
"I thought you were going to be my friend," Febis cries to Dillium bitterly.
Dillium quickly checks the bodies. All have been dead for ten or fifteen minutes, beyond a simple revival. Dillium leaves Febis to his grief and dashes toward the open archway. On the other side is a moderately-sized room with rubble strewn around. It appears that one wall has collapsed. There is a hole at the top where some of the rubble has been pushed away, leaving a man-sized space to squeeze under the lintel of a hidden doorway. There is a dim red light (so, more lava), and voices. Dillium hears the sound of metal on stone and the grunts of men in battle. Scampering lightly up the pile of loose stones and rubble, she scootches through the hole at the top, sliding down the other side. There she finds several unknown people who are watching Arthur, Zander, and Novos in battle. As she arrives, the last of some sort of animated stone statues crumble to pebbles. Arthur's armor is scorched down one side, and he limps slightly. Novos is barely on his feet, and as Dillium arrives, he sinks to his knees, panting. Zander sheathes his sword, and Felicity puts away a wand. Three grubby men and what might charitably be called a woman (under many layers of dirt and grime) stand around, unarmed.
"Now you remember, all this is the lawful property of our company. You don't go gettin light fingers now," says one of the Hand in the most "southern drawl" Damaran accent ever.

2024.05.17 04:52 Turquoiseorchid16 Campus crush

We only really had one full conversation and it was right after I posted to my Instagram story that my other crush was leading me on I don't know if he was trying to acknowledge that or not but we talked about our sleep patterns (don't know if it matters but he gave me consistent eye contact) and he brought up that sometimes he'll wake up at like 5 AM and listen a band, he paused to find out if I knew/ liked the band, which I honestly did, don't know why I said no and then continued to tell me he'll sometimes cry over his ex-girlfriend I said sorry but he said nah don't worry about it was a while ago.

2024.05.17 04:39 Aggressive-Watch-195 Reply about making a paracord sling / guide

alright second try. maybe I can trim the fat a little on this attempt and make it a bit more streamlined.
so the first thing is deciding how many strands to use, and to avoid complicating things on your first try just trust me you'll want to choose an even number.
beginnings:
I almost exclusively do 4 strands as a flat braid with paracord, but that comes with a couple complications of its own involving the finger loop and the pouch design, so I am going to write this for a 6 strand braid, which for most of the sling will be a 3-strand braiding pattern using doubled strands, so 6 total...
...but in order to do the finger loop right you actually want to cut 3 strands at double the full desired length, plus some room for error etc. so for a 54" sling cut 3 lengths of cord at 120" each (and just for convenience go ahead and melt the ends sealed)
line them up alongside one another and fold your bundle in half, but to avoid tangling and confusion keep the 2 halves a little separated. you'll start working on the middle of the bundle.
finger loop:
take the very middle, then choke up a few inches (technically this will amount to the circumference of the finger loop but it doesn't have to be perfect here). tie a slipknot a few inches up from the very middle binding the 3 cords together, and start braiding them together on the long side starting at the knot.
the repeat rule through this whole effort is TIGHT, EVEN braids. if it starts looking wonky, just take it apart and try to fix it bc the further you go the more impossible any corrections will become.
after you get a few inches of braid, loop it around to see how big the finger loop is. you want it wide enough to easily slip past the knuckles on your middle finger (even if that's not the finger you use when you actually sling, you should still make it big enough). when you get there, clothespin the braid closed and untie the slipknot. now you’re gonna tighten up that end of the braid and maybe even add a little length.
stack your braid ends one on top of the other to form the finger loop and make sure each braid's last working strand is pointing in the same direction.
you’re going to pair each strand with its counterpart one by one, and continue the braid as a doubled up 3-strand pattern. this will merge the ends of the finger loop together seamlessly and begin the retention cord.
if this sounds complicated, it's honestly pretty straightforward once you're actually doing it (this sentiment might come up again a couple times fyi)
retention cord:
braiding the retention cord is easy, it's the same 3-strand pattern just with doubled strands now. keep the doubled strands parallel and pull them very tight with each braid you lay down, wrapping them around as you go (again... you'll see what I mean).
knee:
once you get the right length on the retention cord (I didn’t do the math here, but it's not complicated), you'll separate the braid into 2 bundles of 3, each to be braided into the sides of the split pouch.
rather than laying out exactly which strand goes where to make it most even, I think you'll do fine figuring it out on your own. honestly you just want the sides to be as balanced as possible.
a good practice is to braid one side a couple inches, clothespin it, then braid the other side a couple inches. now go back to the first one, undo the braid, pull everything super tight again and braid a couple inches again; then repeat on the other side. this really helps pull out the slack that inevitably builds up.
pouch:
braid each side to the appropriate length (math...), taking turns between them and regularly checking they are well balanced.
we will do a little more to beef up the pouch a bit once we finish the release cord. that is when you can add a Channing type smile if you want, too.
belly:
again, make sure each pouch braid's last working strand points in the same direction and all the strands are pulled tight.
you will rejoin the pouch in a similar way as you did for the finger loop, but this time side by side instead of stacked. this is probably the trickiest part of the whole process, and it might take a couple tries to get it right but it's not too hard. if it's just not working for you, you can get away with joining them stacked instead of side by side and the sling will still work fine - it's just better to do it side by side.
just make sure you keep pulling all the strands tight as you go, and that you are pairing the appropriate strands with one another.
don’t hesitate to take it apart and give it another try if it doesn't look or feel right - it's reasonably important to get this part right since it is the part of the sling that most directly affects how projectiles will release.
release cord:
hey you're at least 3/4 done now. if you want you can just keep doing the same 6 strand, doubled-up 3 strand pattern for the entite length of the release cord - but it's generally advised to drop out strands from the braid periodically to form a steady taper until the very end of the release cord is the same thickness as the finger loop.
it's very easy to do, and I usually just feel it out as I go - it doesn't have to be a perfect taper. you'll drop one cord at a time, so you'll start with 6 strands, braid for a bit... drop to 5 and braid some more; then 4 for a bit, and finally 3 for the remainder - so it does help to learn how to do a 5- and 4-strand braid...
...but honestly it should be ok if you do your 5-strand portion by continuing with the same 3 doubled-up strand pattern, just one of them is a single strand now.
also, whenever you drop a strand don't cut it or anything, just leave it out of the braid and let it hang for now.
same deal when you hit 4 strands - you could learn the braid or just continue the same pattern you've been doing but now only one strand is doubled. doing it like that with the 5 and 4 strand portions will kinda make the cord less... idk 'uniform'(?) than if you were to use the appropriate braid patterns, but all in all it shouldn't be an issue.
lastly, of course, dropping from 4 to 3 should be pretty simple.
release:
I like a smooth release without a knot, but if you want to add a knot you just have to make sure it's in the exact right place so that the very center of the pouch will be the lowest point of the sling when you put the finger loop on and grip the release as you will when it's time to use it. only way to determine that is to put it on your finger and try it out.
if you think it'll help, go ahead and place a projectile in the pouch then hold the sling just as you would if you were getting ready to incapacitate a philistine giant - this will help you find the exact spot where it's most comfortable and natural to grip the release cord and keep the pouch centered.
note: this is actually part of why I prefer to skip the release knot... if you experiment with different ways of holding and releasing etc. - which you probably should if you’re new to slinging - the knot kinda locks you in place. I haven't heard a good argument in favor of the knot actually; it seems like there's no real advantage to having it and it kinda gets in the way
use a crown knot, which is super easy w 3 strands but I’m not going to explain it here - it's all over youtube you'll have no trouble finding a 20 second video demonstrating this simple knot.
you can terminate the sling right at the release knot if you want, but I strongly recommend continuing for a few inches past it - and if you skip the knot, definitely continue a few inches past the portion you'll be gripping.
end the braid with a crown knot then cut and melt the ends of each cord to seal them. melting paracord ends is sort of a skill on its own, but if you do it right it bulges a little and hardens in place which will hold your knot together.
tassle: (how do you spell tassle? is it tassel?)
you don’t need a tassle but hey why not? since you've got plenty of paracord cut like 7" and pull out the inner strands - the guts.
you can thread them through the crown knot for extra security, then braid them together for a few inches - or you can just make a braid and tie it to the end. either way works fine. I like to braid the tassle a bit then let it hang loose for another couple inches into a natural fray, rather than closing the braid with a knot. honestly doesn't matter much, but do leave an unbraided portion as a fray.
pouch afterwork:
you could leave the pouch as is, but it's nice to make it a little beefier and more durable. I just use some more paracord to wrap it. you can use the axe-handle wrap method, which is basically just a series of alternating overhand knots around a core - typically a tool handle but in this case each of the sides of your pouch.
a much, much better way is a 'solomon bar' which is like paracord 101... it's how you make everything - key fobs, bracelets, dog leashes, belts, etc. it's hard to explain, but easy to learn from a video lol. just remember that any video you watch about it will show you how to create a core, then create the knot pattern around it, usually using like one strand of cord - you just need the knot technique since the core you'll tie it around is, again, each of the sides of the pouch.
I've never tried the 'smile' but it seems easy enough - just kinda minimally thread a single strand of cord across the center gap to prevent your projectiles from falling through (honestly it's just not a problem I have often enough to warrant a solution like that)
afterwork/finishing touches:
the hanging strands you dropped out for the taper... just cut those and melt them sealed. easy enough.
you can wrap the finger loop too, if you want. I'd go ahead and do that if you wind up using it often enough, and I recommend something soft like cotton twine... but paracord does work fine too.
end/concluding notes:
and there you go.... idk how much experience you have using a sling, but that's outside the scope of this for me lol - one thing I will say though if you haven't used one before: start with tennis balls or something that can’t knock anybody out or break windows, please!
and lastly, if this does seem like more than you're willing to undertake... there are easier options for sure.
seatbelt sling:
my favorite sling that isn’t a natural fiber balaeric type is the second one I ever made, which took me 10 minutes after watching the video by Mersa - a seatbelt sling. it just uses canvas type material for the pouch and single strands for the cords. look it up. mine gets used all the time and has never needed any repairs or adjustments
noodle sling:
literally takes less than 5 minutes and uses a single uncut cord with easy knots to form the loop and the pouch. you do need a slightly thicker cord though. I’ve made a few of these and they also work great.
anyway, good luck - I'll keep an eye on notifications if you need any help or anything.
it's super satisfying to use a sling you made yourself, and if you're like me at all you'll wind up making like a dozen of them just out of boredom until you get the technique down perfect and even come up with your own ideas and techniques to try out.
just wait until you start getting into the traditional natural fiber methods and you wind up watching the Archaic Arms videos 30x

2024.05.17 01:10 WesamWonders New Tech startup, advice needed.

We're developing an innovative product called Aurora Earbuds, designed to combat teeth grinding and jaw clenching, known as bruxism, and improve overall sleep quality. Our earbuds use advanced sensors in the ear canal to monitor jaw movements, muscle tension, stress levels, heart rate variability (HRV), and skin conductance. When a grinding episode is detected, the earbuds deploy soothing sound waves and gentle vibrations to help relax the jaw muscles.
Product Highlights:
Smart Detection: Real-time monitoring and response to teeth grinding.
Therapeutic Interventions: Personalized sound waves and vibrations.
Sleep Analysis: Detailed reports on sleep patterns via a companion app.
Wellness Insights: Personalized tips for better sleep.
Digital Trends journalist Simon Cohen will be doing a piece on us soon, and other smaller outlets have shown interest in creating coverage in the coming weeks. We're excited about this, but we're also looking to expand our media coverage further.
As a startup, our funding is primarily focused on building and achieving a working prototype. However, we recognize the importance of putting the word out there about our product.
What advice can you give regarding this? How can we gather more attention without having to spend thousands of dollars a month - which would clear out our prototype funding.
Here’s our website - Aurorabudz.com

2024.05.17 00:44 CantaloupeMission731 Short Term Day Trading?

Short Term Day Trading?
Start with premium trial of trading view (pro trial - cancel if not for you) and head to YouTube “tradingview indicator strategies”
Strat that has worked pretty well for me so far thought I’d share.
Add some orderbook indicators to see where large buy/sells happen.
MacroTrend Scanner, MacD, combined with SMA, and bolinger on 5min scale. “All patterns” indicator analyzes patterns to help really judge what could be ahead.
Check the back testing on the strategy you choose what works for you. I think they said on this it was around 80% success if you take out before 2% gains. Set stop loss so if things don’t play out you only lose 1%.
Wait for the exact moment things line up and go again.
I put $8,000 down each trade and go by limit orders. I don’t buy unless my low is hit. (Typically will draw a line from the last area it rebounded in the up direction at a low point - sometimes around the area that the pattern calls out too and order books line up) and it sure sucks to see an explosion when it isn’t but that’s ok there’s always ups and always downs.
After riding a wave for about 20-30min it can typically pull around $200. Some trades I’m out when I’m down $50 but most have been above $200. Sometimes I’ve gotten out while down and it takes off. You just have to decide what works for you. I’ve also seen it climb well above 2% and get greedy for it to fall right where I started (short term trading for ya)
(15min scale) From the first image a bearish flag forms which brings it down. The drop looks scary, but is what forms the falling wedge in the second photo. The drop was necessary for the explosion. That brings us back to the 5 minute scale. When you see what’s happening on the bigger scales it helps decide when to move on the shorter scales. Given all it takes is one action to invalidate a pattern, when combined with the others it almost feels like fortune telling haha. Too much consolidation and I avoid any moves. Sad to pass on bullish patterns but sometimes if it feels like a trap I hold off. Haha.
Not financial advice, but it is fun to learn how it all works! Still have a lot to learn but 2024 is just getting started. Take this all to YouTube if you’re interested. It’s pretty cool to learn.

I am working on integrating controller rumble into my game and I'm struggling to find any resources at all on how to implement good rumble patterns.
I know how to set the motor speeds to a constant intensity. But I know that's most games don't just set a constant motor speed for their rumble patterns. It usually is some combination of wave functions from what I understand and those wave functions can change depending on the use case.
I would expect for there to be at least some resources on what these patterns are and how to implement them but I legitimately cannot find a single resource. Yes there are tutorials on how to implement rumble in Unity but again those just show you the API for setting motor speeds and don't go into how to implement actual rumble patterns.
Does anyone here have experience with implementing rumble patterns in their game? What resources would you recommend for understanding how to implement these patterns?
Any guidance here would be much appreciated!
