 | Mine has always been the 1996 version directed by Franco Zeffirelli. I don't know why but he builts an excellent atmosphere throughout the movie, Charlotte is by far my favourite Jane and William hurt's acting in this role feels more realistic and humane than any other version. When talking about certain movies in the franchise, it is very important to talk about the context in which they were released. Scream 4 was released at a time (2011) when the genre of “torture porn“ was at its peak. We were in the hay day of saw and hostel movies. The uptick in violence in Scream 4 was very intentional as a sort of commentary on the types of horror movies being released at that time. (We know this because Anna Paquin’s character states as much in the opening.)
Without trying to sound too judgmental, the idea that Scream needs to up its gore, comes off as ignorant of why that gore would be in the film in the first place.
Personal anecdote: I finally got my own mother to sit down and watch these movies with me in the recent months. She is not a horror movie fan but seriously enjoyed the first 4. When we got to the opening of scream 6 she turned to me and said, “oh it’s just all gore now, turn it off.”
