Iâm looking for some advice on where to start and how to go about filing my taxes for 2021. Due to several life stressors and not knowing how to go about filing my taxes that year, I kept putting it off and then forgot. Iâm a physician, and in 2021 I got a new job as an independent contractor doing travel wound care work. This was my first time working as an independent contractor, and so I was unfamiliar with how different income taxes worked (e.g. making quarterly estimated taxes, etc.). I think I had made maybe a $1500 payment at some point that year. I had completely forgotten about this until last week when I received a letter from the State of California Filing Enforcement requesting a copy of my 2021 return.
Iâm just a little lost on how to even get started with this. My total ânonemployee compensationâ that year was $76,360.11. Would hiring an accountant be the best option at this point? Or would this be something easy to do using TurboTax? I just want to make sure that Iâm able to correctly apply all of the deductions which include mostly travel costs (I had a lot of driving with that job) and maybe a home office deduction. 2024.06.02 04:04 FRH_95 Question re; personal liability - broken paddle board fin when using it in Mexico
Myself and two friends (living in Vancouver, from Ireland) are on an all inclusive holiday in Mexico, near Puerto Vallarta. Holiday was booked through Expedia. Part of this resort includes free use of non-motorised water sports (e.g., snorkelling, paddle boarding, snorkelling). We went paddle-boarding. Beforehand, the guy got use to put down our information - name, room number and signature. We did not read the form (which we should have) and at the top it said we took personal responsibility of the equipment. This was not highlighted by the guy. He gave us three paddle boards, one of which he had just used to set up the buoys and ropes in the water. We went out for about 30minutes max. Nothing significant happened when we were out and we follow the guys advice about handling the paddle boards. When we returned the paddle boards and were walking away he called us back and showed us that the fin on one of the girls boards had been broken. He called management of the resort. They can down with security and said it would be $22,000 mex pesos (approx $1700 cad - which wasnât even the cost of our holiday each). We obviously did not want to pay that. We said we would have to talk with our insurance company (Irish based, with personal liability covering up to âŹ1,000,000) and he kindly gave us two days to sort it out. Unfortunately we could not get a hold of them as they had closed for the weekend and we are leaving Mexico on Sunday. So we can not get any advice from them. We asked for formal written quote on the cost which he had said he would provide to us via the resort management along with a âdiscountedâ price. We have not received this but received x2 letters in our door from management asking us to pay. We went to guest services and explained that we were waiting on the quote etc. they told us that the price was now $15,600 Med pesos (approx $1250 Cad) and said we could sort it out with the man tomorrow before we leave. I am looking for the following advice: How much are we liable for? (The price seems like it is covering the cost of a brand new board, which the one was not new). Should we pay even though we have not gotten advice from our insurance company? If we pay what information do we need to provide to the Irish insurance company? How likely are we to get reimbursed from the insurance company? Any Mexican laws or advice to handle this situation? Thanks in advance.

My spouse filed I-130 initially as consular processing (in Jan 2023) but five months later our plan has changed. I ended up staying in the U.S. and filing Adjustment of Status separately (in May 2023). My spouse has received this letter for I-130 today (June 2024).
"The above petition has been approved. However, you did not indicate on the petition whether the beneficiary intends to apply for an immigrant visa abroad at a U.S. Embassy or a U.S. Consulate or will apply for adjustment of status in the United States. Therefore, USCIS has retained the petition. If the beneficiary intends to apply for adjustment of status in the United States, they should submit a copy of this notice, along with a Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. They can obtain Form I-485 from the USCIS website at www.uscis.gov, by contacting the USCIS Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283, or by visiting the local USCIS field office. Hello! Sorry for the long post, I'm just trying to sort out what to do đ«ą
I'm trying to choose a program for my child and I thought the insight of educators would be helpful. My child is 4, highly verbal, very emotionally mature and on the quieter side. I haven't done much in the way of formal school so I feel like he's somewhere in the middle of the pack in terms of what he knows. He can form some letters but I think he needs more work on fine motor skills since they're pretty shaky and he generally dislikes drawing. He knows the basics of phonics sounds and is working on connecting those with letters. He can count to at least 30 and can do some very basic math. He gets deeply interested in topics and has the capacity to sit and listen/watch to adult level content on those topics (e.g. the other day he watched a 30 minute video on the logistics of the Roman army). He loves playing with his sister (6.5) and generally gets along very well with kids 2-3 years older than him. He DOES have a couple friends his own age but much prefers older kids.
He just transitioned into a Montessori program a couple months ago and has settled in well (no crying at drop off, generally happy). He hasn't really made any friends his age (he says he doesn't understand their games) but his teachers haven't flagged any developmental behavior as concerning.
When I observed his class, I noticed a lot of kids seemed to be much less well-regulated than him and the teachers spent a lot of time redirecting and resetting. My son is pretty quiet and well behaved so he doesn't get much attention since the teachers are constantly having to deal with the others who are throwing things or hitting or just being 3-5 year old balls of energy. However, he also just won't do the works if someone isnt encouraging him. I came away from the observation period feeling like my son wasn't getting enough focused attention to help him get the most out of the Montessori works and would actually thrive in a setting where everyone is working on the same thing at generally the same time (like a formal education setting) so he can get more direct instruction. I think he's a very bright kid (everyone thinks their child is a genius đ) and just needs a more structured environment.
I also wonder if the issue might be that his current school has a lot of kids who are neurodivergent and who need a lot of assistance focusing.We have a spot at a well regarded public school. The Montessori program is 1:10 and the public school would be 1:20.
I do know and like his Montessori teachers and the outdoor part of the school is much superior to the public school. They get a ton of outdoor time at his Montessori school, which is important to me. The Montessori school is a longer drive but a later start time ... I'm just very torn. Any insights are welcome. Sorry for rambling.

I think he's a very bright kid (everyone thinks their child is a genius đ) and just needs a more structured environment.
I also wonder if the issue might be that his current school has a lot of kids who are neurodivergent and who need a lot of assistance focusing.We have a spot at a well regarded public school. The Montessori program is 1:10 and the public school would be 1:20.
I do know and like his Montessori teachers and the outdoor part of the school is much superior to the public school. They get a ton of outdoor time at his Montessori school, which is important to me. The Montessori school is a longer drive but a later start time ... I'm just very torn. Any insights are welcome. Sorry for rambling.
