When Solene’s large sable orbs locked on mine, time stopped, the past five years of pain fell away. Her supple rosy lips upturned and slightly parted- the same way they had before. The same lips I fell in love with. She was beautiful, the same stand out features and subtle curves.
It felt as if gravity was pulling me closer, each step unconscious. With our toes nearly touching, every nerve ending in my body urged me to touch her, to tuck a stray strand of hair away.
“Hi.” Her voice velvety and deep, slightly hoarse.
Unsure of what to say I began to speak, “H- wh- how are you?” The future of whatever could be depended on the next few moments, and I didn’t even know where to begin.
Solene felt the same way, it was evident in her tone, “I’m well, not much has changed, I’m slightly older…” she let out a weak laugh “and Izzy is a sophomore in college. He-“.
“That’s gre-“ I began. “Sorry you go ahead.” I could feel my cheeks pinken.
“I was just going to ask if you’d like to sit and chat, I have time before my client arrives and it would be nice to talk.” Her tone was unreadable, I’d hoped she’d wanted me to say yes.
With a nod of my head, she turned on her heels; her now chin length hair fanning out slightly.
————————————————————————————— Once we reach the offices, Tracy peeks her head out of her office and smirks “Ah hello Adonis.” The comment although to me is more geared toward Solene.
“Tracy, don’t you have some art to purchase or someone else’s awkward moment to make worse.” Solene rolls her eyes, the same mischievous sparkle apparent.
With a small smile, I duck into Solene’s office. Taking in the familiar-small- space, I smile, not much has changed. Photographs of Izzy through out the years, multiple paintings from artists all over the world, and even a few of us during the time we spent together on August Moon’s tour adorn her walls.
Leaving the door open slightly Solene sits on the small love seat she added to the room, its vintage, it suits her.
Taking a seat next to her I smile. She seems to be taking me in, inspecting closely how age and life have affected me. “How are you? I saw you on Jimmy Kimmel last week, are you enjoying the solo route?”.
“It’s been a journey of loss and gain. I didn’t know that with love comes pain, until that day five years ago. The music I’ve been writing is not just about infatuation but yearning for what was.” I realize I may be rambling and pause.
“It’s nice to see you passionate about music again, the same way it was when it was just you and your guitar.” Solene’s hand touches mine tenderly, “tell me more about it?”.
“Well, when we went our separate ways I began to see the road ahead was going to be the same as before if I let it. I could keep on as the British boy who messes about and lets everyone around him make decisions for him; or I could be who I am today. I’m finally involved in the process of my music from start to fi-“ a knock on the door brings me to a stop.
“Solene, Ms. Raphel is here. I know she’s a half an hour early, would you like me to tell her you’re in meeting?” Tracy looks pained as if she’s interrupted a super secret meeting- which she has, but it’s not the end of the world.
Solene’s eyes bounce between mine and Tracy’s “Fucking artists. They’re never on time, it’s always absurdly early or laughably late.”
Deciding for the both of us I stand up, “This is important Sol, I’ll be here as long as it takes. As long as your number is still the same, I would be more than happy to schedule something.” Tracy shuts the door slowly and leaves us alone again.
“Hayes, are you sure? I can tell her I’m in a meeting, I can’t expect you to move your busy schedule around because of my client’s inability to tell time.” Solene stands and begins shuffling papers on her desk, no matter what she says I know I’ll go to the ends of the earth for her.
Standing behind her I place my hand on her shoulder “I’ll be available whenever you are. Good luck with the new client.” I walk to the door before turning back “Oh and Solene, you’re still hot or whatever.” With those parting words I open the door leaving her blinking in shock. ————————————————————————————— As I sit on the sofa of my new flat, I’m like a teen boy again. Do I dare flirt with the girl? Keep it simple? I begin typing something only to delete it until I hit send on impulse.
-Hayes- I was wondering if you’d like to get some really fucking good sandwiches sometime? ————————————————————————————— • It’s been two hours since I left the gallery, fifteen since I sent the text, and five minutes since Solene has read it. Patience and tranquility are two things I am fresh out of when it comes to waiting.
-Hayes- I know you’ve read it Sol, it’ll be just lunch.
This time she replies immediately
-Solene- I don’t know Hayes… it was always just lunch.
-Hayes- I’ll behave, or try to. Pls?
Knowing she won’t be able to say no, I prematurely do a little dance.
-Solene- I’ll think about it, maybe.
-Hayes- Go easy on my poor heart Sol. One sandwich. Not even drinks. Just bread. Yes?
At this point I may as well be on my knees, she still knows how to make me work for it. Leaving well enough alone I decide to go for a run. The waterside park in Santa Barbara has become my refuge-aside from my music- the waves and fresh, cool air keep me grounded.

-Solene- Fine you win. Lunch. I could go for a good sandwich.

Like the time Michelle Steel bragged during a 2014 local Tea Party meeting that she pulled her younger daughter out of UC Santa Cruz because she was starting to support gay marriage [video] and express interest in voting for Barack Obama. Right, because nothing makes a kid want to pledge a lifelong allegiance to the Republican party like their mom telling them that they have to or they'll turn gay. Also she sent her to Loyola Marymount University, a Jesuit college - jokes on you Michelle, the Jesuits are a progressive order who loved the gays! Joke's on you!
In 2017 while serving on the Orange County Board of Supervisors Steel opposed funding for the County's Human Relations Commission, casting the only dissenting vote. Then, that same month she voted to block the release of a report detailing an increase in hate crimes in her district with Black and LGBTQ residents making up a considerable percentage of the victims. Even the Irvine Police Chief pushed for the report to be released. Do you know how much of a fascist you have to be to get outflanked by the Irvine Chief of Police?! It's the planned community Irvine?!
But worst of all, Michelle Steel is California's leading opponent of abortion rights. Thank you Michelle, for breaking the glass ceiling of being terrible to women. Bravo! As a Congresswoman in 2021, Steel co-sponsored the extreme Life at Conception Act which would grant legal personhood to fertilized eggs but after blowback from the Dobbs decision in 2022, Steel saw the writing on the wall and withdrew her name as co-sponsor shortly after reintroducing the bill in 2023.
The bravery that these Republicans show when they face the slightest bit of adversity - sometimes it takes my breath away. Now, as of March 2024 Steel now describes herself as an ardent supporter of IVF despite having many times introduced legislation that would have literally criminalized it. She wrote an op-ed piece in the Orange County Register titled Setting the Record Straight on What I Think About IVF in which she spends most of the piece talking about taxes.
Yeah, so she's trying to cover her tracks on her terrible voting record but can't even bring herself to stick the landing. You're not fooling anyone Michelle. The people of Orange County deserve better, even if the White people there scare me on a deep spiritual level. Sure the sunsets are gorgeous but that's unfortunately right when I need to be out of there, okay?! I never get to see them; this is anecdotal evidence as far as I'm concerned! Hello all,
I am planning a 14 day family trip to LA / California, and would very much like some advice. Am I on to something here, or am I missing something?
We are a couple with two teenage kids, and we are arriving at LAX on July 9th. I have tried to do some research, and have a few ideas already:
9th: Arriving, settling in at an AirBnB or a hotel in the vincinity of Anaheim / OC. Spending the next few days in Disneyland and on the beach (Laguna Beach is the idea). Maybe a day in Tihuana?
14th ca: Driving north, maybe via a national park, ending up at San Francisco. Spending a few days there, primarily to see Alcatraz, and of course the mandatory tram ride. (What else?)
17th ca: Driving back to LA, through the coastal highway if possible (are there parts of the road that is closed?). Settling in a hotel closer to central or western areas of LA.
18th ca: Exploring LA – museums, observatory, Santa Monica beach, Hollywood etc. What to prioritize?
22nd: Dodgers game.
23rd: Returning date.
Car will be rented for the entire stay. Heart wants a Dodge Charger. Head does not know. Any advice on rental agency or office? What about parking, do we need to buy hotel parking? Is it true that San Francisco is a risky place to bring a vacation packed car?
Am looking primarily at Hyatt hotels. Is this sensible?
Should we try to explore the surrounding area more? I will gladly consider a couple of full day drives if the destination is worth the effort.
I am thankful for any advice you might have, and we are looking forward to what we hope will be an experience of a lifetime!

Oakley met Blanchard in her hotel room, where she did her makeup and the two created social media content together. Oakley and Blanchard had about two hours to do hair and makeup and one hour to create social media photos and videos. They also stopped in a nearby Sephora for about an hour to shop together. Oakley has posted more than nine videos on her TikTok and Instagram from the collaboration, which have garnered more than 70 million impressions, she said. She also gained more than 250,000 followers on TikTok, almost overnight. As of Wednesday, Oakley has more than 490,600 followers on TikTok. "I've never gained so many followers from anyone before," Oakley told the News-Leader on Wednesday. "Obviously, I've worked with traditional celebrities ... and a tag can help my career, for sure, but the Gypsy Rose Effect is unlike anything." Connecting with Gypsy The collaboration began back in December 2023, a few days after Blanchard was released from the Chillicothe Correctional Center, where she served an eight-year sentence for conspiring to kill her mother Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard" with her then-boyfriend Nick Godejohn in 2015. Blanchard was released from prison Dec. 28 and on Dec. 30, Oakley posted a TikTok video of her setting up her makeup kit with the caption, "Clearing my schedule in case Gypsy Rose wants glam." The video was a part of a trend where TikTokers made videos of them "clearing their schedules" to do specific activities with Blanchard. As of Wednesday, Oakley's video had more than 454,200 views. Though the video garnered more engagement than her other content, Oakley said she didn't think much of it. However, she was genuinely interested in doing Blanchard's makeup. "After that, I saw that she was doing press in New York and getting her hair and makeup done and I was like, 'Okay, she's about to start being a glam girl, how can I get my name in there?'" Oakley recalled. "I DMed (direct messaged) her a million times (on Instagram), but obviously she wasn't seeing anything because I think she got 12 million followers overnight." Oakley decided to take it a step further and began sifting through the list of accounts Blanchard followed on Instagram, which at the time was about 100. "I was just looking for someone who was maybe a manager, publicist or friend," Oakley continued. "I ended up finding a few girls who worked on the Lifetime team and DMed them and said, 'Oh my gosh, I saw Gypsy is doing press. How can I glam her? Can you connect me? Who should I reach out to?' and they were like, 'Oh my gosh, we actually saw your TikTok.'" In January, Lifetime aired a six-episode docuseries called "The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard," which chronicled the history of Blanchard's case and some of her life in prison. After connecting with members of Lifetime, it was about four months before Oakley heard from them again, which she said is typical when working with celebrities. Then out of nowhere Oakley received the call: Are you available? Gypsy is coming to Los Angeles. Four hours and a lasting friendship According to Oakley, Blanchard was only in Los Angeles for about 24 hours. Ahead of the Lifetime red carpet event, Blanchard visited Santa Monica Pier — it was her first time seeing the ocean — and did some staple California activities, like trying In-N-Out Burger. Then, Blanchard and Oakley met up for hair and makeup in Blanchard's hotel room. "We just connected right away," Oakley said of Blanchard. "I filmed the entire process, which I typically try to do with my clients ... She was so sweet, such an easy client and just so excited to learn about makeup and just asking questions the entire time: 'What's this product? How do you apply this? Why are you putting it there? What does this do? Have I been doing this wrong?' (She) was very, very eager to learn, which is so fun for me." During hair and makeup, Oakley learned that Blanchard had never been to a Sephora, so she asked Blanchard's team if they would have enough time to run by a nearby mall. Fortunately, they were able to work it into her schedule. The two bought an array of makeup products, including moisturizer, foundation and concealer, blush, mascara, eyebrow pencils and lip liner. "It was just so sweet and it honestly made me so emotional taking her as she'd never been before, she's 32 years old and doesn't really know how to do her makeup," Oakley said. "Watching her light up when I would tell her about certain products ... was just really, really cool." Since Blanchard's visit to Los Angeles, Oakley said the two have been texting back and forth daily. And while nothing is confirmed, Oakley said Blanchard told her that she would like for her to do her makeup for her wedding, when that day comes. Getting started and what's next Oakley got her start doing prom and bridal makeup in her parent's basement in high school, but she knew she was interested in more sophisticated work. A few weeks after graduating from New Covenant Academy in 2016, Oakley moved to Los Angeles at the age of 18. Upon arriving, she enrolled at Make-Up Designory, a five-month professional make-up training program. "Two days before I graduated Make-Up Designory, I landed a job as an assistant for a really huge celebrity makeup artist. That was kind of that moment for me where I was like, 'Okay, I think this is supposed to be what I do." The makeup artist was Rachel Goodwin, who has worked with Emma Stone, Laura Dern, Jennifer Lawrence, Zendaya and countless other A-list celebrities. Oakley said she spent about four years working as an assistant for various celebrity makeup artists before establishing herself independently. The first two celebrities she worked with on her own were Paris Hilton and Jessica Alba, both in the same week. More recently, Oakley has enjoyed collaborating with social media content creators including Tanya Mongeau, Trisha Paytas and Brianna LaPaglia. When it comes to Oakley's relationship with Blanchard, she said she hopes to stay in contact and do her makeup anytime she's in Los Angeles. Don't assume that you can wing the slicing; it's not as intuitive as most other cuts. It has 2 separate grains that do not run in the same direction. You can easily differentiate between these grains when the meat is raw. I am only asking for personal opinions since i don't have to take this decision right now but in the future
I really like Europe (i am living in Greece and studying here) and the life here it is pretty stable and peaceful i really like the climate and the people however if i where to stay in Europe i would rather live in other Mediterranean countries such as Italy Spain or Portugal. From what i have seen and read from other posts life in Europe is more "silent" and peaceful compared to the us having less financial opportunities in Europe. People live lifes with a wage and get along with it
From the other hand if I where to live in the us i would choose california. California is such an interesting state where a lot of culture have been extracted and the climate is pretty similar to that of the Mediterranean. From what i have seen there are way more financial opportunities and the life there is pretty active however I've been really worried about the gun violence, violent crimes and generally "crazier" people and traffic accidents.
I am currently 17 and looking forward into studying oceanography. That's why i really like these places (The Mediterranean and california) However I've been thinking a lot about the scenario of living in Europe and living in California
I specifically like Santa Barbara and san diego
Any info and opinions on the topic would really help

My dad is broke and owns no property. My mom and I both have little condos, so we’re fine, but I want him to be able to retire here, and I don’t think he can if he has to worry about rent. He’s a bit of a hippy / burner, so I’ve always dreamed of just buying him some land and a trailer. I work in tech, but just rank & file, so I’m not like loaded. I think my budget is still pretty decent like $750k because, well, I’ll inherit it, so I’m not like bankrupting myself for him. I’ve seen some stuff in the Santa Cruz mountains that seems alright, but that place kind of gives me the creeps. It’s really far, but there’s also good stuff in Santa Rosa.
