2024.05.18 21:42 smorreboard Looking for restaurant recommendations for Cordova. Not fancy restaurants, just regular restaurants with tasty or unique foods.
I normally use Google Maps, but most of the reviews seem to be from other tourists, so not sure how reliable the reviews are. Thank you!

2024.05.17 20:19 whodahwut Moving from Western Washington a good idea?
Hello all,
I have been reading up on posts on this sub reddit for a while and noticed a lot of posts painting Memphis in a negative light, especially in terms of crime. I am seriously considering selling off most of our belongings and moving myself to Eastern Memphis (somewhere like Oakland, Collierville, or Cordova) to get a fresh start. I wanted to see if there are any factors I am not properly considering.
Why I want to leave WA: -Cost of living! My fiancée and I made about mid $125,000 to $150,000 last year combined and still cannot afford a starter home in our area (with a 20% down-payment). -Homeless. I live outside of any major urban center but there is a huge homeless/drug problem here. No dumpster or car is safe and public areas are full of tents. -Dirty. Trash is left around streets. It is not terribly uncommon to see human feces on the sidewalk (alongside dog). -Crime. Multiple car break ins. Property crime. Harassed by homeless. I am aware that memphis does have an issue with car break ins but how severe is this? -Weather. We get about 60 days of sun every year where I am. Say what you want about muggy heat, but I am sick of cold, damp, and Grey. -Hobbies. We love the outdoors (swimming, kayaking, etc). Washington is great for this but it is too cold or damp most of the year to do this. Not to mention the cost of a place to store things like kayaks.
Why we chose Memphis: -I have family there. -Recently visited in May (I know this is not the unbearably hot season) and it was absolutely beautiful. -Clean. Outside of a few neighborhoods the Memphis area is remarkably clean (at least compared to what we are used to) -Cost of living! We can actually afford a house. Our jaws dropped at how much cheaper restaurants and groceries are here. -Public areas. You actually have plenty of places that people can come together at and enjoy outdoors without having to navigate around encampment or fighting for what little public space is available in highly populated areas.
My only concern is crime and jobs. We will have to quit our jobs to move and I know incomes in Memphis are lower. I am hoping for a remote position but that may not happen. We both currently work in banking and she has a history in animal medicine.
What do you think? Is this a good move or am I wearing rose tinted glasses?
Thanks!

2024.04.20 19:29 DoraDarling Focacciaza (E Cordova) - 4.99
| Focacciaza (E Cordova) - 4.99 +tax = 5.24 5 slices of focaccia (I ate 1 before the pic) Regular price is 3.99 each or 3/$10 so I got $18 worth. It's good focaccia, tastes great heated in the toaster oven or pan fried for a few minutes. The drawback is parking. Street parking was full so I parked in a reserved spot for the building. Turns out it's not reserved for customers. I got a stern talking to from a parking warrior (not likely affiliated with the restaurant, but seemed to be someone who hangs around a lot.) Respectful negotiation & he "guessed" he could "allow" me to park there for just a short time. Good surprise bag, good food, but idk if I'd buy from there again submitted by DoraDarling to TooGoodToGoCanada [link] [comments] |

Tolomato Cemetery Tour
- Located on the site of an early 18th-century Franciscan Indian mission to the native Guale people, this Catholic cemetery dates back to St. Augustine's early history. Public access to the Tolomato Cemetery is limited, due to preservation concerns, to the third Saturday of each month, when guided tours are given from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
- The Tolomato Cemetery was the final resting place for people from a wide variety of cultures - Spanish, Cuban, Greek, Menorcan, African, Irish, and Haitian, just to name a few. It was closed to burials in 1884.
- The Tolomato Cemetery served as the parish cemetery for what is now the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine for more than 100 years. Though some 1,000 St. Augustinians are buried in the cemetery, there are only about 100 grave markers. What is known about who is buried there comes from the parish death records. The Cathedral parish and the Diocese of St. Augustine still own, maintain, and protect the cemetery.
- Some of the historically important people buried in the Tolomato cemetery are Bishop Agustin Verot, the first Bishop of St. Augustine, Governor Enrique White, who served during the Second Spanish Period, and General George Biassou of Haiti. Also buried here are the first Sisters of St. Joseph and Civil War soldiers from both sides of the conflict, including Freedmen who fought for the Union.
- Father Felix Varela of Cuba, who as a renowned teacher at the Cathedral of Havana seminary was an outspoken defender of human rights, and who later published the first Spanish-language newspaper in the U.S., was buried at Tolomato in 1853. The distinctive small white building in the cemetery is his chapel, built in his honor.
- Admission: Free, and donations are encouraged.
- When: 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the third Saturday of the month.
- Where: The Tolomoto Cemetery is located at 14 Cordova Street, St. Augustine 32084

- Lullaby of the Rivers celebrates Earth Day with a festival on Saturday and Sunday, April 20 - 21, 2024, at the North Shores Community Park in Vilano Beach.

- "Lullaby of the Rivers" is a tribute to Florida's rivers and their heritage. In his folksy storytelling style, Patterson invites listeners to embrace the Native American tradition of environmental responsibility by remembering that Florida's great rivers — including the Apalachicola, Ichetucknee, Ocklawaha, and Kissimmee — carry the names they were given by the native people.
- In addition to two days of musical entertainment, the event will include an Earth Day Resource Fair with activities for kids, sustainable food tastings, and environmental organization presentations. The mission of the Lullaby of the Rivers Festival is to "awaken and nurture connections to nature in gatherings of all ages by using music and stories that inspire environmental awareness and consciousness."

Lullaby of the Rivers Festival

Often, we neglect this until danger strikes. Thankfully, police officers and brave souls stand ready to help. Take the case of Donald Gwin, a stark reminder of, "If you do the crime, you'll do the time." He was found guilty of assault, robbery, and rape against a Memphis woman. Imagine the fear of being attacked at home. This was a woman's reality when Gwin invaded her apartment, committing vile acts. He was already on probation for a previous sex crime. Holding a knife to her, he violated her. His cruelty didn't end there. He attempted to destroy DNA evidence, forcing the woman to brush her teeth. Then, he robbed her, taking her belongings before fleeing. Gwin's past crime in 2012, involved a similar assault. For his 2012 crime, Gwin received a 2-year suspended sentence, probation, and was enlisted as a sex offender. How was he found this time? A real time GPS tracker he was wearing led police to him. Guilty once again, justice didn't show leniency. Gwin received a 35-year term in the Department of Correction. With his sentencing complete, here's hoping for a safer world.

2024.03.12 14:05 Tasleus Casbah is gone. Who knows how to make the sweet tea they had?
Good morning, Memphis Reddit!
Cordova at one point had a restaurant called Casbah and they had a pretty solid Moussaka and a number of other dishes I enjoyed. However, easily their best thing was the sweet tea that they made. I think it had ginger and some other goodies in there but I couldn't begin to break it all down. Does anyone know how to make that tea / some close guess on how to make that tea? Hoping someone has more knowledge on what it was than I do.

2024.02.24 03:51 MIdtownBrown68 Don’t sleep on Queen of Sheba
Taking the recommendation from some of the recent threads, we went to Yemeni restaurant Queen of Sheba on Germantown Pkwy for dinner. Everyone at the table was nodding and groaning and eye-rolling in pleasure the whole meal. It has the standard middle eastern/Mediterranean appetizers, like hummus, falafel, dolmas, etc. they also have shawarma and kabobs. In addition, though, they have Yemeni entrees that I’ve never experienced before. I had an okra and lamb stew that was delicious! The large appetizer platter is a must if you have more than two people. The baba ganoug was perfection and the falafel was pillowy on the inside and super crispy outside. I’ve never had better. It was supposed to come with assorted pickles, but instead, we got a tomato-walnut pesto dip with pomegranate molasses. I did not complain. We also brought home four take-out boxes of leftovers, so it was a good value. Next time, we will try the desserts.
Cordova is just bursting with great food right now. Just at that corner, there is Petals of a Peony and the empanada food truck. We are spoiled for choice.
