2024.06.02 06:24 kileynjt "The only reason you can miss work is if you have a kid"

I'm in the middle of a really unpleasant situation at my job and wondering if anyone has any advice or words of encouragement.
The issues here started long before this but everything really kicked off last week when I was written up for being out for 2 shifts the week prior. I had strep throat and provided an excuse from my doctor, according to company policy. I have a very good attendance record. At first they claimed that no attendance policy existed and it was all up to discretion to which I printed and presented the company policy which is readily available via our Microsoft SharePoint. They had also cited me for 1 day which was approved PTO and another which I was able to prove that I worked. On-site HR refuses to speak to me about any of this and has been attempting to ignore it entirely, so last night I composed a lengthy email which contained all of my requests (that they ammend my attendance record to be accurate, provide me with a written ADA exemption for my disability, clarify attendance policy and expectations and explain to me why I'm being punished for the same actions others get away with on a constant basis) and sent it to our on-site HR, corporate HR and both supervisors present during my disciplinary meeting.
Today, when I arrived for my shift, I was demoted by my supervisor. When I asked why, I was told that it was due to my actions and that the only reason that exists to miss work without getting disciplinary action "is if you have a child". I do not have a child; I am in fact, infertile. I was under the impression that Family Status was a protected class in my state, but it seems it may only be in housing situations. My supervisor refused to elaborate in any way, stated to me that i "should've let this go", "just taken the write up and moved on". He stood up and left the room while I was speaking, effectively ending the meeting and refusing to engage any further.
I don't know how to handle this anymore. My supervisor was extremely hostile towards me during our meeting today. I work a night shift and do not see any upper management or office staff due to my start time. I've been documenting absolutely everything including recording the audio from all the meetings I have here (one party consent state) and I have 2 job interviews on Monday, but I don't know if there's more I can do or if i should even be as upset about this situation as I am. There are SO many details I've left out for sake of brevity. Any advice as to how to conduct myself beyond "document everything" and "follow policy to the letter" is welcomed.
Thanks for reading.

2024.06.02 06:08 7_dusty [M4M/A playing M] [DISCORD] The Priest and the Cowboy! (+other plots!)

hallo! Back again with another ad, and I’m not replacing anyone. It's a pleasure to meet you. I’m Dionysus, but folks call me Dio.
let me tell you a bit more about myself and my writing style. I mainly write literate-novella, 1-3k words per reply depending on the partner (and I can go higher!) I can reply normally every day, maybe longer if the post is longer.
when it comes to my writing, I tend to write in the third-person past tense and often include more than one character. I don't mind writing against just one character or a whole bunch, but I do like to keep things organized. because of this, I prefer to use a server with separate channels for writing. I find that discord works best since reddit's formatting is quite frankly appalling.
at the moment, I'm open to any plot my partner may throw my way, or I'd enjoy playing a priest and cowboy plot, which can be discussed in DMs! however, I am fond of fantasy and history, and most of my plots will involve that!
I'm currently located in the GMT-4 timezone, and I'm more active on weekends, mainly on Fridays and Saturdays due to work.
one thing I must mention is that I love partners who are open to communicating and can be not just a writing partner, but a friend. I'm not a fan of people who only reply once in a while with no other communication. if we're going to collaborate, I want us to do so in a meaningful way. it doesn't matter if we communicate outside of writing via voice channels or text messages. as long as we're communicating, that's all that matters.
I hope this gives you a better idea of who I am and what I'm looking for. if you're interested in collaborating, please do reach out to me. I look forward to hearing from you soon! tschüß!

2024.06.02 06:03 duchess5788 Book suggestions for an NR trilogy lover?

I LOVE Nora Robert's trilogies. The characters, the world building, the fantasy/ paranormal elements. I've read/ listened to all of them 4+ times. They're my safe place. Whenever something in my life isn't going according to the plan, I turn to them. But I want to not read/ listen too often coz I'm scared I won't feel like reading them when I need my safe place. If you've read these trilogies, and you've read something similar(ish) by another author, PLEASE HELP! Please drop a name (or more) of a book or a series or an author who you feel has a similar writing style.
Sorry for the ramble.
Thank you.
P.s. I really like Maagie Shayne's Eternity, but sadly they're not made into audiobooks, and audiobooks are all I can do at the moment.

2024.06.02 06:01 adulting4kids December 2nd Prompts and Character Profile Template

This post will repeat weekly through the month of December. Please repost or cross post as a way to promote this subreddit. Or ignore this one and check out our others! I apologize if it's cramping your style, but when I work hard on certain posts I want to be sure they are useful! I also am working on making these shorter so they don't get lost in the madness....
Scroll down for the Character Questions and create a thoughtful and empathetic profile of your main characters for your projects!
As always please use these as sparks to create and feel free to post your responses and ideas in comments or separate post! This is YOUR subreddit so go ahead and post away!
Prompt: Imagine a dystopian world where an oppressive government has successfully erased all forms of personal identity and history. In this society, individuals are assigned generic roles and are forbidden from expressing their unique thoughts, emotions, or experiences. Write a short story or reflective essay exploring the life of a character who discovers a hidden underground community that encourages self-expression and reignites the importance of personal narratives.
In your response, consider the following:
  1. Character and World Building:
    • Describe the protagonist's background, their assigned role, and their initial perception of the oppressive world they inhabit.
    • Develop the hidden underground community, including its purpose, structure, and the means through which it safeguards personal stories.
    • Create a contrast between the protagonist's initial world and the underground community, highlighting the impact of personal narratives on shaping identity and resisting oppression.
  2. Plot Analysis:
    • Outline the protagonist's journey of discovery, including their initial skepticism, the influential encounters they have within the underground community, and the personal sacrifices they make to preserve their identity.
    • Explore the challenges and conflicts faced by the protagonist, both externally (e.g., encounters with government authorities) and internally (e.g., the struggle to confront their identity).
  3. Deep Introspection:
    • Prompt the protagonist to reflect deeply on the uncomfortable subjects that the government's erasure of personal narratives seeks to suppress. These could include topics such as individuality, memory, trauma, and the power of storytelling as a tool for empathy and resistance.
    • Encourage the protagonist to evolve their thoughts and perceptions throughout the narrative, considering the consequences of silence and the potential for personal growth through self-expression and sharing.
  4. Requirements for Responses:
    • Conduct research to explore real-world examples of societies that suppress personal narratives or attempt to erase collective memory.
  5. Prompt: In a post-apocalyptic world, a devastating pandemic has wiped out most of humanity. The survivors are forced to live in isolated communities, each with its own set of strict rules and customs. Write a short story or reflective essay exploring the life of a character who questions the existing order and embarks on a journey to unite these fragmented communities. Consider the role of unity, diversity, and collaboration in rebuilding a shattered world.
  6. Prompt: Set in a future where advanced AI technology has permeated every aspect of society, write a story or reflective essay following a protagonist who begins to question the boundaries between human and machine. Delve into the ethical implications of human-AI relationships, the erosion of human emotions, and the potential consequences of blurring the line between artificial and genuine experiences.
  7. Prompt: Imagine a world where climate change and environmental degradation have irreversibly altered the planet. Write a story or reflective essay from the perspective of a character who is part of a group striving to restore balance and heal the damaged Earth. Explore the connections between personal responsibility, collective action, and the intersections of social and environmental justice.
  8. Prompt: Transport yourself to a society where strict social hierarchies are based on a person's genetic makeup. Write a short story or reflective essay following a character who challenges this system and advocates for equality and inclusivity. Examine the role of genetic determinism, discrimination, and the power of individual agency in reshaping social structures.
  9. Prompt: Imagine a world where art and creativity are considered illegal, seen as tools of subversion and chaos. Write a story or reflective essay from the perspective of an artist who risks everything to defy this oppressive regime and reclaim the power of artistic expression. Analyze the significance of art as a form of resistance, its ability to inspire change, and its impact on personal and societal transformation.
Remember to consider the following for each of the prompts to insure a well rounded and thought out premise that will engage the audience and allow room for growth in the plot.
Prompt 1 - Post-Apocalyptic Community Building:
Prompt 2 - Ethical Implications of AI Technology:
Prompt 3 - Environmental Restoration and Social Justice:
Prompt 4 - Genetic Hierarchy and Social Change:
Prompt 5 - Artistic Expression as Resistance:
  1. Chick Lit: Write a chick lit novel or short story following a relatable protagonist navigating the challenges of love, career, and self-discovery. Explore themes of friendship, personal growth, and finding balance in a fast-paced, modern world.
  2. Young Readers' Adventure: Imagine a group of young friends who stumble upon a hidden portal to another realm. Write an adventure novel or short story as they embark on a quest to save a magical world from darkness. Delve into themes of friendship, bravery, and the power of imagination.
  3. Historical Fiction: Set in a time of significant historical events, write a novel or short story highlighting a lesser-known figure or group of people. Research the historical context meticulously and emphasize the character's resilience, struggles, and contributions during that tumultuous period.
  4. Fantasy: Create a fantastical world filled with mythical creatures, magic, and ancient prophecies. Write a novel or short story following a young protagonist who discovers their extraordinary abilities and must navigate a treacherous journey to fulfill their destiny. Explore themes of self-discovery, heroism, and the blurred lines between good and evil.
  5. Mystery/Thriller: Write a gripping mystery or thriller novel following a seasoned detective or amateur sleuth investigating a perplexing crime. Develop complex characters, suspenseful plot twists, and an intricate web of clues and red herrings that keep readers guessing until the very end.
  6. Science Fiction: Set in a future where technological advancements have transformed society, write a novel or short story exploring the ethical and societal implications of groundbreaking inventions. Examine themes such as artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, or virtual reality and their impact on humanity's future.
  7. Romance: Craft a heartwarming romance novel or short story centered around two individuals from different backgrounds or opposing sides. Explore themes of love, forgiveness, and the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
  8. Coming-of-Age: Write a coming-of-age novel or short story following a young protagonist's journey of self-discovery, identity formation, and navigating the complexities of adolescence. Explore themes of friendship, personal growth, and the challenges of transitioning into adulthood.
  9. Psychological Thriller: Create a psychological thriller novel or short story that delves into the intricacies of the human mind. Focus on a protagonist who becomes entangled in a web of deception, manipulation, and paranoia. Explore themes of trust, perception, and the blurred lines between reality and illusion.
  10. Family Drama: Write a novel or short story exploring the dynamics and complexities within a multi-generational family. Include themes of love, secrets, and conflicts that arise as family members navigate their relationships, face past traumas, and strive for reconciliation.

2024.06.02 05:58 NateSedate Freestyle vs Off the t_p

Freestyle vs Off the Top
Tired of having these arguments.
I do a Freestyle Friday on my socials every week. It's written. Essentially I pick a beat. Spend about 15 minutes writing like 24 bars to it and then record it. There's no real subject, just whatevers been on my mind that week.
What it is not, is it is not Off the top. I don't go off the top anymore.
Old school rappers say a Freestyle can be written, its just a style of rapping.
People tried to change the definition to where off top means freestyling.
Which...I guess for many the definition has changed. But for someone who's been here since practically the beginning... it has a different meaning.

2024.06.02 05:35 sakeenah_ Does LDR really works???☹️

Me(23) and bf(28) are currently in ldr since umuwi muna ako samin dito sa Visayas plus may work din ako dito. As in bihira na lang kami makapag usap tuwing day time. Am I being toxic? Tapos pag nakapag Saudi na sya mas mahihirapan kami makipag communicate sa isa't isa kasi sobrang mabubusy sya sa studies nya plus iba na din oras namin. Masyadong malaki time difference. Any advice?

Trying my luck again.
🔸 Marital Status : Single 🔸 Height: 5.10 🔸 Current Location: Chennai, India 🔸 Reasons for CF: To have fun and travel with my partner. Never settling for the financial barriers that stricken the family 🔸 Partner preferences (if any): Seeking a relationship that ends in marriage. Be yourself. What I seek in a partner is just have acceptance of each other the way we are. Age, location and religion is never a criteria.
A calm and chill minded individual. I tend to overthink at times and overdo a lot. A mobile photographer who is into travelling and a district level football player. A moviebuff and a foodie who explores the cuisines when inside the city for weekends. Currently writing stories as well and hoping to get into the media industry hopefully I get some long term connections. I am also an anime person and love cosplays though never actually did one, but been part of comic con!!
As a professional, been with the corporate life for nearly a decade now and currently working in taxation as a consultant.
Hopefully this time I find someone to travel around and who would make me leap into the next city for an adventurous journey of life together.

2024.06.02 05:30 GoodGoodNotTooBad My thoughts on the crazy book Myke is reading

I just finished reading the Heather Lewis novel “Notice” after Myke said it was what he was reading recently. Overall, I thought it was an interesting book with quite a few standout scenes, even if it drags plot-wise towards the middle.
Below are my full thoughts:
The introduction by Melissa Febos is a solid read before getting into the novel itself. The only flaw here is that she does give too much of a synopsis of what’s going to happen in the story, so if spoilers bother you I would recommend reading the intro after you’ve finished the novel.
What was most important in the introduction is the backstory about Lewis, which explains that the author tried to get “Notice” published as her second novel, and that it was repeatedly rejected by publishers when she was alive. Lewis wound up taking some of the same ideas and repackaging it for a different novel she called “The Second Suspect,” but that book wasn’t well-received by critics. Eventually, after many years of being sober, Lewis relapsed and had a mental breakdown. She committed suicide at age 40.
Based on what people know of her, Lewis lived a hard life filled with abuse and mistreatment from both men and women, including her parents, and a lot of her experiences were channeled into her fiction. I kept all that in the back of my mind while I was reading “Notice.”
On the very first page of the novel, the narrator writes about being a young prostitute. There are a lot of novels out there that feature sex work, but this one stood out to me because of the intentionally detached matter-of-fact writing style. Everything is stated clearly, which helps the narrator immediately establish herself as a credible witness to her own life. At times it comes off as journaling with flair. Below are passages early in the novel:
1: “I’d gotten my money already, outside the car. Not much left to do now but do him, so I put my hand in his lap. Got him the rest of the way there, then unzipped him. Touched him some before I put my head down. It was fine really, was no big deal. He took maybe four minutes, and when he came I swallowed because neither of us had planned any place else to put it. Besides he’d been decent so it seemed wrong to leave him a mess to clean up.”
2: “Always try and convince them you like it, or them, whichever seems more important.”
3: “When we did go up the stairs he stopped at the landing, began pointing out pictures of his children. One daughter in particular he said I reminded him of, and I thought, At least for now you’re doing to me what you want to be doing to her. At least she’s off at some school like the rest of them.”
4: “The wife touched my cheek, still awkward and shaky like she was trying to find the right way to go about it. When her fingers got to my neck I found myself borrowing her shivers. Found myself trembling all over and so already I knew this was not a good thing to pursue. That it would make me feel something, which naturally is about the last thing you want.”
5: “I sat there waiting because I knew he liked giving instructions. I hadn’t worn any underwear this time because, let’s just say, I learned fast. He’d reached over to me in the car, smiling when he’d discovered this. It was the sort of thing I thought might get me more cash. It might with someone like him who liked you paying attention.”
It’s not a very long book at all (240ish pages) and the chapters read fairly quickly. As I said above I do think the story drags a bit in the middle unfortunately and I can see some people not loving the ending, but taking it for what it is the book was an interesting change of pace for what I'd been reading lately.
S/O to Myke for mentioning this book because I’d never heard of this author. It’s a shame that Lewis isn’t alive to see “Notice” get republished, but I'm glad it’s out there now and I suspect it will find the right audience.

2024.06.02 05:29 glassman0918 Authors like Ray Bradbury to avoid?

This is less a suggest me a book and more learn books to avoid. I have tried reading "Dandelion Wine" and "Something wicked this way comes" and I have decided I do not like his style of writing. The over descriptive similaic style. I find boring and hard to get into. So I am looking for a list of authors to take off my reading list.
Note: This is not me saying he is a bad author. I understand why people like him. Just not my cup of tea.

2024.06.02 05:22 Honeysyedseo How to Find Top Overseas Talent Easily in 2024

My overseas talent can compete with most Americans.
They speak great English, work hard, and follow instructions perfectly.
But I don’t have a special talent for finding them.
In fact, anyone can find the exact same talent (maybe better).
This is all you have to do:
When most people try to fill a role, they:
→ Put a job post out on Upwork or http://Onlinejobs.ph
→ Write an unclear job description
→ Hire one of the first 10 applicants
Of course this doesn’t work.
Instead, you need to:
  1. Create an assessment tied to what the role will be
  2. Make a detailed job post describing what you need
  3. Screen 20+ applicants
  4. Have qualified ones do the assessment
  5. Potentially interview ones that do it successfully
Hire the one you’re confident with.
In short, the issue most people have with overseas talent starts with them.
You can’t talk to a small batch, not test their skills, and be mad you’re getting bad outputs.
Talk to more people.
Have them do assessments.
Interview ones with potential.
That’s how it’s done.

Summary:
Kirk Jensen always chased his dreams. He even left home and chased them across the country. He expected that hard work, training, and determination would make his dreams a reality. Afterall, people always said that if you worked hard, you could achieve your goals.
He did not expect to be a short order cook working long shifts for minimum wage. He certainly didn't expect to take the garbage out one night and find himself confronted by a thousand pounds of fury armed with fangs and claws. He did not expect to survive.
Now, Kirk finds himself in the center of a world he never thought possible. Caught between two powerful forces, he's pushed to make a decision. That decision will change the future of his new home. He doesn't know what the right decision is, and as tempting as the offers are, only one side can win. Thankfully, he's got a pair of interesting women to show him his options.
I figured that since G.S. D’Moore did such a good job on his summary, I would copy and paste it. I think it was spot on, but left you enough room to discover the world as you read. What I liked about it was that it captured the tone of the author’s voice.

Characters:
First, this was a harem series, so there were a lot of important characters. However, this was told from one point of view, Kirk Jensen. He’s the male lead of this world and was your Joe Every Man made good. Total wish fulfillment, but I really loved these cats and kittens. All of these characters were well-written and fleshed out. They felt real to me, as if I could have a beer with them at the local pub. Which is ironic, given where Kirk’s first job was. Like the last book in this genre that I read, this was a laid-back story. I loved that the author focused on fun and adventure, without needless navel gazing. Hats off to G.S. D’Moore on his execution, he killed it with these characters!
Kirk Jensen: He’s an orphan with dreams of a career in law enforcement. With a new degree in criminal justice, he moved to a small town in Alaska. He knew that small towns, like the one on Kodiak Island, had openings in law enforcement. At least he hoped that they did, because he went all in with his move. When he gets there, he chases his dream by working at a greasy spoon restaurant as a cook until he can test for the one opening that was coming with one of local cops’ retirement. From a personality perspective, he is a steady, loyal guy. He’s your average guy, at least until things change when he becomes a shifter.
Brianna Ahnah: She’s a member of the Ahnah Innuit Werewolf Pack. Her father is the alpha and she is his only daughter. Her pack is a collection of various indigenous werewolf shifters, but she’s an arctic wolf herself. Her people run the logging industry on Kodiak Island. She’s petite, maybe 5’3” tall and lithe in stature. From a personality standpoint, she is a calming force and more of the laid-back homebody type.
Serena McCoy: She’s a member of the McCoy Werewolf Pack. Her father is the alpha and came to Kodiak Island in the early 1900s. The pack is a collection of Dire Wolf shifters who run the Kodiak Island fishing companies. She’s a busty ginger, with a personality to match the fiery mane. While Brianna is demure, Serena is a tempest of raw sexuality. She’s almost as tall as Kirk and seems very outgoing.

Plot and Pacing:
This story was plotted to perfection by GS D’Moore. I believed in the character’s transition from human to shifter. It was expertly done and not some rush job to get to the harem parts. Instead, we had several chapters before we got that change that is hinted at in the series title. But, again, I love shifters, and werewolves… so, my buy-in was easy. I was ready to suspend my disbelief… cause shifters are awesome! It helped that the author made it an easy and enjoyable ride through his coming-of-age adventure.
As far as pacing was concerned, the adventure wasn’t all at once, rushing through the plot to get to the smut. Instead, the author built up to the crescendo, allowing the harem romance to ride second fiddle to a shifter tale. We explored the universe through Kirk’s eyes, but he was a fun perspective to follow. The author kept the story flowing smoothly from beat to beat, interspersed with romantic tension filled lulls to let the reader catch their breath.

Audiobook Quality:
The audiobook was professionally made by Podium Publishing. The narrators they hired were good and they kept my attention. There were a few obvious inserted corrections, where the volumes didn’t match, but those were so infrequent that they were almost unnoticeable. I’ve never listened to Evan Jordan or Sierra Taft before, but they’re now on my auto-approved list for audiobooks. The two worked well together, and I’m becoming more and more of a fan of the two narrator pairings.

Sizzle Factor:
There weren’t that many sex scenes in this novel, a blowie and one glorious ‘wham, bam, thank you ma’am’ scene. What was there was well written, allowed you to visualize things like a smutty movie in your head. That sex was very much normie vanilla, but it was good. Those scenes were steamy… very steamy. Like, it sizzled and left you a hot and sweaty mess.

Overall:
Okay, let’s dive into this book! This was my second harem novel, so I don’t have a lot to compare this to. That said, I really enjoyed what was here. The story was a lot of fun, it was well-written, and the audiobooks were well-performed. On the writing side, G.S. D’Moore has a mastery of the craft that was a pleasure to read and listen too. It was a joy to read, and I plan on checking out more of his books. He communicated to us with conversational prose, which I’m a huge fan of. If my Veteran Radar still works on, I’d put money on D’Moore having worn the uniform in dangerous places like I have. It was no wonder that his law enforcement character, Kirk Jensen, was so well written. His other characters were also all believable, and I wanted to hang out with them in real life. This is how I judge the people in the books where I temporarily make my home. The sex was written with just enough sizzle to seduce you into buying the next book. Even cooler, I have enough knowledge of werewolf and shifter lore that I could follow along. In a nutshell, this book was amazing and hooked me into buying the rest of the series. You’ll want to buy them all too and you won’t regret it!

How seriously do people take such social media postings? A new study suggests the general public and policymakers alike take leaders’ social media posts just as seriously as they take formal government statements. The research, by MIT political scientists, deploys novel surveys of both the public and experienced foreign policy specialists. “What we find, which is really surprising, across both

They don’t heat their Pennsylvania home in winter, because heating is a “pointless indulgence.” Their children wear iPads around their necks. And a Guardian journalist witnessed Malcolm strike their two-year-old across the face for misbehavior, a parenting style they apparently developed based on watching “tigers

The campaign invites viewers to consider the nuances of consent, so we can raise these important issues with children and young people in our lives. But what is a good age to start talking about consent? How do parents tackle such conversations when this information probably wasn’t readily discussed in our own upbringing? How

A PRODUCT OF NATURE OR NURTURE?

The concept of cultural entrepreneurship has many facets. It encompasses both the cultural and social impact of entrepreneurial training, and the environmental factors that influence its development. Some societies, such as the U.S., have a strong entrepreneurial culture. This means that certain characteristics are celebrated and encouraged, such as the ability of individuals to assume risks, patience when confronting challenges, and innovative problem solving, especially in uncertain situations. However, not all countries have such an entrepreneurial culture. Entrepreneurship struggles to take off in Europe In general, entrepreneurship can drive economic

MARKETERS CAN MANAGE ‘FEATURE CREEP’ SO CONSUMERS FEEL LESS INTIMIDATED BY TOO MANY FEATURES IN A PRODUCT

Wifi-enabled washing machines. Voice-controlled microwaves. App-enabled TVs, vacuum cleaners, and even window blinds you can control from the comfort of your couch. Many of the technological features now included in everyday products are useful and accessible. But research has shown that having too many can overwhelm potential buyers, making them less likely to make a purchase. In recent research, Wayne Hoyer, marketing professor and James L. Bayless/William S. Farrish Fund Chair for Free Enterprise at Texas McCombs, digs into the phenomenon of “feature creep” and its impact on consumer sentiment.

RESEARCHERS EXPLAIN SOCIAL MEDIA’S ROLE IN RAPIDLY SHIFTING SOCIAL NORMS ON GENDER AND SEXUALITY

A new paper summarizing decades of research demonstrates how social media has supported an explosion of diversity in gender and sexuality in America during the 21st century, and also how these technologies have equally enabled a cultural backlash. The paper’s authors, UC Santa Cruz Psychology Department faculty members Phil Hammack and Adriana Manago, identified five main narratives about gender and sexuality that they believe emerged through social media as people have strived to be “authentic” on these platforms. The findings, along with resulting recommendations for psychology researchers and practitioners, were

Justin Frake is interested in cause-and-effect relationships in real-world data and the hidden dynamics that shape workplace behavior and equality—or inequality, as the case might be. His curiosity has led to research that challenges some popular beliefs as well as published studies related to women in the workforce. One study shows that firms promoting flatter hierarchies inadvertently discourage female applicants and another study counters several recent studies that claim women CEOs negatively impact career outcomes of other women. Both are published in the Strategic Management Journal. The assistant professor of

CHALLENGING LEWIN’S MOTIVATIONAL CONFLICTS THEORY

A recent series of experiments challenges the longstanding theory of motivational conflict resolution introduced by Kurt Lewin. According to Lewin, conflicts between two undesirable outcomes (avoidance–avoidance conflicts) are typically harder to resolve than those between two desirable ones (approach–approach conflicts). Lewin posited that avoidance–avoidance conflicts, where individuals must choose between two undesirable outcomes, are typically more challenging to resolve compared to approach–approach conflicts, which involve choosing between two desirable options.

WHY WE DEHUMANIZE OUR POLITICAL OPPONENTS

Some of human history’s greatest atrocities—genocide, slavery, ethnic cleanings—are rooted in our ability to dehumanize people from other social, political, or cultural groups. Whereas prior research has traced dehumanization to the belief that others think or feel less than we do, new research co-authored by Haas professor Sameer Srivastava shows that our tendency to dehumanize can also be influenced by how we think others view important facets of the world. 2024.06.02 05:18 Proletlariet GDT Debate Conventions Primer

Going into a GDT style tournament like AAC 3, here are some conventions to expect and help you with your arguments.

Scan Requirements:

Oftentimes for expedience, battle boarders will reference characters and their abilities by reputation rather than posting scans of feats every time.
Ex: "Doomsday scales to Superman."
It may be enough to simply leave it at that in an average forum post, and rely on a consensus zeitgeist of what that implies, but in-tourney, nothing exists until established, cited, and qualified.
This is to ensure that a judge's particular background with any given media does not unduly influence the outcome of debates---contestants submitting more obscure characters should not have to work harder to convince judges of their abilities compared to popular ones the judges will likely have pre-existing knowledge of.
Would not be very persuasive to judges, because beyond basic common sense expectations ("Super"man is to some degree "Super"human) it is unqualified.
Would also not be persuasive to judges, because while there is a claimed chain of scaling that leads to an objective measurable feat of material destruction, the feats are not linked, and therefore, for the purposes of the round, doesn't exist yet.
Would be an effective way of establishing Doomsday's level of strength to judges.
Direct and evidenced comparison to his opponent would go even further towards winning the match.
Let's say I was running Doomsday and matched against Tony Stark's Hulkbuster.
Your overall goal in a GDT is to convince the judges using evidence that your characters' abilities have favourable interactions with their opponents, whether to damage them through their defences, avoid or endure their attacks, or even things like how their preferred approaches/fighting styles play off the opponents' weaknesses.
A hard and fast rule of thumb is that nothing exists until it's linked and the more plausible linked evidence you have for things you claim about your or your opponent's character, the more likely you are to come out winning.

Split Durability:

In materials sciences, different substances often have very different shear vs tensile strengths. This often holds true for fictional characters' bodies as well.
Esoteric elemental abilities are especially prone to this.
Not every character has such a jarring disconnect in durability as in these examples, but the trend is enough that by default, judges in WWW style tourneys do not take demonstrated ability in one category (blunt impacts, piercing resistance, electricity, heat) to confer implied durability in the others without evidence.
If you're fighting a guy with a flamethrower, you need to demonstrate your pick can resist high temperatures, even if they can shrug off being punched through a building.

Split Strength:

If you've ever compared the physical builds of weight lifters vs boxers you'll notice they look nothing alike. This is because the set of muscles used for lifting heavy objects is very different from those used for striking motions.
In fiction, where super-strength can come from esoteric sources like magic or chi or cybernetics, build does not necessarily correlate to ability, but it is still true that many characters with exceptionally good striking or lifting feats are lacking in the other category.
If you want to argue your character grappling, post evidence of their lifting strength. If you want to argue them punching people, post feats of them hitting things very hard. Don't expect one form of strength to do the work for both.

Doctored Tiers:

Tiersetter pages are deliberately curated for tournaments.
The feats present on the tiersetter page are the only feats you or judges should be looking at for the purposes of determining in tieout of tier status.
You may glance at a tier page for a character with a lot of history like Venom and be tempted to bring in outside evidence for why he stands a chance beating your character in a fair fight, but remember that the tiersetter is not the character as they exist holistically, but the character as they are being presented using a deliberately limited set of feats for the purposes of a tournament.
Having to trawl through 50+ years of comics history just to determine if characters are in tier or not would be far too much legwork, and so things are pared down to be more managable.
Sometimes, tiersetter pages will even use a composite that would be illegal to submit in tourney---Kengan Man was a popular tier made up of feats taken from basically the entire cast of Kengan.

On Calcs:

By convention, GDT judges have preferenced visual comparisons of objective feats to user-made calcs trying to get a quantitative number in kilotons or whatever.
We don't need to calc Yujiro Hanma vs Tokita Ohma because we have eyes and can see Tokita makes a 2 metre crater in rock with his strongest move and Yujiro craters an entire arena showing off.
Calcs come in handy to establish quantified reaction times for dodging bullets and things (speed of projectile divided by distance) but don't waste too many character limits when simply posting the objective feat and saying "Look at it" would do.

2024.06.02 04:59 Rough_Initiative4350 The magic is gone

I remember feeling so excited when LO updates few years ago. Everything felt and looked magical. Even if the art has improved it feels like it lost it's magic. I went back to the early episodes and I liked that art style much more. The story was best at the beginning. After some time it really started bothering me but I kept reading it cause I'd already read a lot of it and I hoped for the magic to come back. Now that it has ended Idk what to think and feel. It had potential to be something legendary but the story at some points was so bad and boring that it just ruined everything. The ending was really bland. There are characters that kinda just disappeared which doesn't makes sense. I feel like the author was just too subjective when writing some parts because they didn't really make sense and didn't give anything to the story. I feel like if I went out for a coffee with RS we would get in a fight within the first 5 minutes.

2024.06.02 04:46 PlatinumRooster The Final(s) Nail In The Coffin - A perpetual decline for an amazing game, and concerns about Nexon.

TL;DR: Shooters have notoriously had a difficult time staying alive while under Nexon's banner.
Go ahead and spam your downvotes, but if you're someone that actually likes to engage in conversation, I urge you to read on.

Intro -- Personal

For starters, The Finals is my favorite FPS game to come out in the last 5 years. I've played since the second CBT and have loved just about every second of it. Prior to my time with The Finals, I was an Apex Legends nerd since release. The pro match hacking incident in Apex Legends is what pushed me over the edge; an edge that I was already barely hanging onto after 3+ years of awful decision-making, balancing, bugs, and tone-deaf MTX offerings. And going even further back 13-ish years (my time with League of Legends), I played Combat Arms for about 4 years and ran a very successful Guild.
Keep Combat Arms in mind for a little later.

The Final(s) Nail In The Coffin

HYENAS
At the time of the first The Finals trailer, HYENAS had been running in closed testing for about 8 months and was luke warm, to say the least. I actually find it very eerie how similar the HYENAS and The Finals were in terms of theming: heisters/contestants fighting for cash in arenas and needing to 'Cash Out'. HYENAS was a game I had on my radar for a bit and was semi-excited to tell my friends about because Apex Legends was in a really rough position and was growing stale in it's growth - we were looking for something else. It had some interesting movement mechanics, which myself and my friends were enamored by in Apex Legends, but nothing too crazy. I was hopeful. After about 2 testing runs, I phased out of HYENAS pretty hard and lost interest as it wasn't really what we were hoping it would be.
Breaking Convention
Fast forward to that 8-month mark, and the trailer for The Finals launches. It's this over-the-top explosive FPS with some crazy arena gimmicks, and holy shit it was pretty. The destruction was incredible, and the developers were touting server-side destruction so that it would be consistent for all players. The gameplay and graphics looked so familiar, and as it turned out, it was made by a bunch of ex-DICE devs. Count me in. Oh, and these were the same cats that released that short but impressive looking trailer for their other game Arc Raiders? Exceptionally promising pedigree, and an already promising duo of upcoming projects to boot. Couldn't be more excited. However... to this day, I don't know if I was getting struck by the Mandella Effect, but I swear I didn't see Nexon's publisher tag in the first few trailers. In any case, by the end of my first beta test, I was well aware and to say I was concerned would be an understatement.
The Good
Embark have done a phenomenal job at creating something unique in a market of Battle Royales and old titans slapping each other with wet noodles on bi-annual cycles. The Finals is insanely unique. Whereas a lot of games that try to break conventions like this tend to have iterations across many years and multiple development studios up to an eventual peak, the formula of The Finals feels like the final iteration of a genre that has never existed. Performance is top notch, the game does what it needs to do graphically and still has additional bells and whistles, and it had a near flawless release (all things considered). Were you to ask me, I could not imagine another game like The Finals existing in it's current exceptionally polished state. The next game like The Finals, whenever it comes out, will likely be exceptionally different. However...
The Bad
Lightning eventually breaks out of the bottle and disappears forever. The Finals, in all of its game design competency, has major issues for lasting in a market like today's and thankfully, for once, it's not actually due to it's MTX implementation and a greedy publisher (I say that cautiously, more on that later). No - the issue that The Finals has and why it's on a trajectory for shuttering is that it has almost zero skill expression. Let me explain.
Were The Finals released 12-ish years ago, it'd be a behemoth of an IP by now and likely would have changed the trajectory of the market in terms of player and audience capture. What do I mean by that? Well, lets look at games 10+ years ago - specifically FPS'. What was the primary appeal and objective? The appeal was an easy to pick-up game which allowed you to get into the action almost immediately. The objective? Click heads faster than your opposition. Game design around that time was rather linear in how it delivered the objective mechanism to the player. Give player gun, player click button; happy player. Competitive games have all existed, but competition now is vastly different.
Today, skill expression is the name of the game. It's not enough to click heads the fastest - that's not how you get your high anymore.
For DayZ, it was a masterful bait and deception. For PUBG, it was about maneuvering long before your opponent did and mastering weapon control. For Fortnite, it was about 'cranking 90s' and building the most optimal structure AROUND your opponent. For Overwatch, it was about chaining a series of abilities together into a combo that 6 players couldn't predict. For Apex Legends, it's about mastering movement in such a way that your opponent gets whiplash. Hell, even in Counterstrike - a game about holding angles - it's about mastering grenade throws.
The Finals... does none of that. You're not baiting anyone around fixed objectives. You're not out maneuvering when spawns are fixed. While structures exist around you, they serve more as an element of chaos than necessarily for control. There's no abilities to string together in some wombo-combo. Grenades are static and don't have a lot of physical attributes to facilitate against the environment like physics. And lastly, and this one hurts me the most because I was absolutely a sweaty try-hard in Apex Legends that spent hours in the shooting range practicing; while there is speed and movement in the game, you're not breaking the game's engineering to manipulate your movement in unintended ways - ways that become SO common... that the developer themselves puts those exploits in future season trailers for the game making them canon mechanics.
In other words, the skill ceiling is about as high as the desk players sit at to play the game. If you can move a mouse or a controller and click buttons, you're in. You just need to get familiar with the maps and weapons and... that's about it. :/
The Ugly
Don't believe me? Lets get numerical. Go look at Twitch stats for The Finals. Now, Twitch isn't an arbiter of truth in terms of a game's performance metrics, but it shows what players are watching. I'll save you the click: The Finals (at the time of writing) is the 215th most watched game. It's a whole 20 rows down on the front page. Now, players love watching high-skill play, but this also shows that even casual viewers still prefer casual games over The Finals. There is no external appeal. As much as I love this game, I'm not above a good joke, so I just wanted to highlight the irony of The Finals being a gameshow... and not being very popular as a show. Lol.
With all of the above said, the game is still in a relatively good position at this moment. Despite having very low player counts (no, I'm not the kind of person to spell doom for a game just because it's player count is dropping - it's on a normal interest decline curve), it requiring a low amount of players to start a game at all is a good thing. Unlike a BR or even a normal TDM-like game, you need a minimum of 9 players to start a round. A 9-player minimum goes a long way in expanding the ability to find a game with only 15,000-ish players. It puts it right in the comfy zone of co-op games like DRG or Vermintide. However, competitive games requiring a stalwart player count to be viable unlike co-op, so that's a bit of a problem right now.
So with that being said, it can always improve right? Something can change to bring back players and bolster it's numbers again, right? Well... um...

Nexon -- The Gravedigger

Nexon & Me -- We Don't Talk About It
My relationship with Nexon is long and... tenuous, at best. To me, Nexon is that family member that only ever comes to larger family get-togethers likes weddings or baby showers. They tend to give out some of the highest ticket gift cards but once the party is over, everyone finds that the giftcards are empty or deactivated. Nexon, over the years since it's arrival in the West in 2005-ish, has been flakey at best, and absent at worst. I'm envious of those who don't have a relationship with Nexon like I do because Nexon has truly been that family figure in my life of gaming since Maplestory - I have been apart of just about every major release pre-2016. I'm 31 now - that's over half of my life. Spoilers: It's not all been good. I'm happy to say that I've been able to communicate with a small handful of you over the last 18 months who have shared my same concerns and have the same history with them that I do.
I played Maplestory religiously. I played Mabinogi diligently. I played Kart Riders confusingly. I played Sudden Attack curiously. I played Combat Arms consistently. I played Vindictus excitedly. All of the previous, and a few more, intermixed with other games not made by Nexon - aside from Runescape, Nexon has been with me just as long, if not longer (depending on how you look at it). I know how Nexon is. I know how Nexon works. I know how Nexon behaves. With that said, it doesn't bring me any joy to pop the virgin cherry for some of you who don't know much about them.
Nexon Doing Nexon Things
I'll only be mentioning relevant titles here to paint the picture that needs to be seen.
(From here, the only relevant conversation pertaining to this thread will be about FPS')
With all of the above information about Nexon's history, its fair to surmise that Nexon has a turbulent cycle serving as a publisher for games. This does not bode well for Embark.
I'd like everyone to remember that the people we engage with on a daily basis in the Discord are passionate Embark folk. This critique of Nexon has no bearing on Embark, however it's important to remember that they'll likely be affected, and it's a shame. Even in the best case scenario that The Finals doesn't shut down, but just maintains a low player-count, it will not serve well under Embark. Unfortunately it will affect Embark's pedigree more than it would ever affect Nexon as Nexon has the same priveledge and power of the likes of EA.
I'll be honest, when I first found out Nexon is the primary publishing house behind Embark, Nexon's history of shuttering games wasn't the first thing I thought of. The first thing I actually thought of was it's history of MTX in it's game. We all joke about horse armor and FIFA packs, but Maplestory led the charge of overbearing MTX in the West. Given today's game market, I was admittedly expecting a lot worse in terms of monetization for The Finals. I'm happy to report that I'm pleasantly surprised with it's current state. I still wouldn't say it's TRUE 'micro' like Helldiver's, but it's way better than a lot of other offerings, especially for me personally coming from a game like Apex Legends.
However, Nexon's influence still can't be ignored. You see, with a history like Nexon's you probably expect what we've all witnessed in the market over the last decade, but Nexon doesn't operate that way. They have a penchant of being rather silent during most, if not all controversies. Hell, just in general - controversies aside. Unlike bodies that we're familiar with like EA, Take-Two, Ubisoft and the like, Nexon doesn't speak outside of their games often, if ever. If you were at a public execution, all of the companies we're familiar with would likely be the Officiant at the pulpit. But Nexon? They're the executioner - completely silent and performing a duty without remorse. This is always how they've acted.

Closing Thoughts

I know I said above that the MTX concerns for The Finals kind of faded away for me as it doesn't seem to be an issue we'll have to worry about, and while it's not the main point of this post, I still find it necessary for players to keep in the back of their head, especially since Embark have other games coming out. Were The Finals not to shutter due to low player count, this is my PSA to all players moving forward, whether it be about The Finals or beyond: Nexon cannot be trusted.
"Well, duh! You can't trust companies anyway, nor should you. It's a company. It's incentive is profit."
To that I say, "That's not my point".
In today's market, we're typically used to a controversy happening in the game on top of whatever PR blunders is going on with the organization, but that's not what would really happen here. The Finals doesn't have any issues beyond it's declining player count, but I want everyone to remain aware of Nexon's moves going forward. Just because we don't necessarily see the smoke here doesn't mean that there isn't a fire somewhere else.
So, for your own interest if you'd like to research on your own, here are some topics of concern:
  1. Variety of game closures and sunsets under contentious situations with developers and publishing partners alike.
  2. Account security breaches (I guess a more relevant tangent would be GameGuard. Nexon was the first to widely use GameGuard when Maplestory came to the West. I personally don't care, but I know some others would.)
  3. Various cases of government scrutiny world-wide due to addictive Gachapon implementations.
  4. Speaking of Gachapon (and P2W), their recent suit around manipulating odds for a P2W item outside of it's listed values: https://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20240312050604
  5. And lastly, most recently, Nexon pulling back public support for Maplestory's would-be world-first level 300 player when he used the opportunity to address genuine concerns about the game's current state, including the above lawsuit.

2024.06.02 04:44 JayVinn21 When hiring writers, how to know when they use AI?

I hired 2 writers last week. One writer I have been using for years, the other is new.
Both of their recent submissions look like AI, but honestly I cannot tell.
I am also a writer (15+ years) so I have spent a lot of time writing and editing. The reason why this question even came up is because the existing writer I used. His writing style and word choices have completely changed. When I compare his work today vs what he wrote before AI, it's like reading two different writers.
But again... I cannot be certain.
It there a way to check if writers use AI?
