A patient’s pain log after surgery

2024.05.13 00:35 sunrise-sesh A patient’s pain log after surgery

Left foot surgery. I had the Kinder Procedure (recision of Accessory Navicular Bone) on May 7, 2024. I took notes about my pain so I could communicate my experience effectively to my surgeon and anesthesiologist during recovery.
I will be 2 weeks non-weight bearing, then have a follow-up appointment with the surgeon to remove stitches and switch me from a splint to a boot (to begin weight bearing).
2 weeks non-weight bearing, then follow-up appointment with surgeon to remove stitches and switch from splint to boot (to begin weight bearing)
5/7/24
7:30am surgery takes place this day. They gave me one Promethazine in pre-op and then the anesthesiologist performed a block from two nerve points (each side of the knee) to numb my lower leg and foot completely. I was completely asleep from the Promethazine by the time the block was being administered. Then general anesthesia was then administered for the surgery.
11:30 in post op. Was given two Percocet and due to pain felt through the block. Surgeon was surprised I could feel pain. Pain was at an 8 right in my arch. Went home shortly after.
Was at the hospital for 4 hours total. Surgery takes about 45 mins.
*4:30pm took 1st oxy. Pain is at an 8
*11:30 pm took oxy

*4:30am took oxy
Woke up with feeling in my toes and I could move my toes. Foot and leg under outside of knee feels asleep
*11:30am took oxy. Started taking toradol.
2:00 Notable shooting pains from navicular for a quick second then tingling sensation
*5:45 Concerned I was taking the oxy too fast, I tried to spread out interval. Took 4:30p dose at 5:45. It’s very painful. Icing it. Pain scale 7
6:00 Shooting pains intensified. Feel it in the arch as well as in the inner thigh. Mostly feel it in the arch. Feels like pressure and aching pain with periodic shooting pains. Toes still mostly numb from block. Feel tingling in my toes.
6:15 increasingly very painful. 7-8 on the scale. Hoping for oxy taken at 5:45 to kick in soon. Hard to get pain back under control.
6:55 finally have some pain relief. Pain level down to 4
7:20 pain going back up to 5-6. Pulsating and shooting pains. Aching pain with tingles.
*7:35 icing it. Pain is 8. Feels like the navicular bone is pressed against the cast. Very tender. Taking another oxy. Restarting 6 hour cycle. Next oxy dose to be at 1:45am
7:40 shooting pain that made my body jolt. The jolts are a 9-10 and only last a second.
7:55 tmj flair up. Need to use bite guard. Pain is at 8.
8:15 feeling pain relief. Pain is 7-8.
8:35 pain down to 6
8:50 pain is under control but fluctuating from 6-7
9:20 5-6 pain scale
10:00 pain is down to 3-4
5/9/24
*1:45am took oxy
*7:45am took last oxy
*1:45pm started tramadol in place of oxy. Have been taking Tylenol and toradol in 6 hour intervals. Moving Tylenol/toradol intervals to not be at the same time as tramadol (e.g. taking med every 3 hours - Tylenol/toradol one 3 hour interval, then Tramadol the next 3 hour interval)
Pain managed well the rest of the day and thru 5/10. Pain level 4.
5/11/24
Woke up with (new) heel pain from splint. Its bearable. Pain from arch is well managed and at a 4.
5/12/24
4:15am Tried to skip tramadol dose in the middle of the night but woke up in pain 1.5 hours after the time I was supposed to take it (continuing to take toradol and Tylenol on schedule). Took 1 tramadol at this time.
10am Woke up with a pain level of 3-4. Took a shower today for the first time since surgery. It went well, but afterwards it caused my pain level go up to 5 once I propped it up and iced it. Continuing to keep it elevated and iced as much as possible.
1:45 in pain of 6 so am taking tramadol. Most of the numbness in my toes and knee is gone. Can still feel numbness when I squeeze my big toe. Can move toes pretty well now. Can lift big toe up. Couldn’t do that yesterday.
3:00 tmj pain when eating
3:25 pain in arch is tingling. Pain level 6-7. Hasn’t been back under co trip since my shower.
4:15 pain back down to 5.

2024.05.10 13:36 capresesalad1985 How to help chronic soft tissue back injury?

Hi everyone I am looking for any type of help I can get.
In November of last year I was in a rear ender car accident at a red light. Both cars totaled, the other driver was going about 40mph. Prior to the accident I had some protrusions in my thoracic spine that was successfully treated with an ablation. My MRI’s post accident showed 4 cervical herniations, 2 lumbar and 5 thoracic, but they are all small. The largest is at t4/t5. I also had 3 displaced rib fractures on the left by my shoulder blade.
At this point, 6 months post accident, I’m just a mess. I have horrible pain that spreads across my mid back, and pinching/gripping pain in chest. My legs are getting heavier and weaker and my feet tingle all the time. I have had an epidural in each area, a percutaneous discectomy at l5/s1, an intercostal nerve block, and a thoracic ablation. I’m currently on Percocet and meloxicam, use lidocaine patches, ice every hour at work, and a tens unit.
My pain management dr sent me for a surgical consult, to which that Dr said there was nothing wrong with me that is operable, that the pain is soft tissue injury from the accident and most likely my broken ribs still hurting. I don’t feel like it’s the broken ribs since those were very far to the left and the pain is definitely central and spreads out bilaterally.
But if it is soft tissue injury, what do I do the fix that? I took 3 months off work and have no more sick time. Work is torture (I teach hs) and I’m just trying to get to the summer. I feel best when laying down, but even laying down I get bands of pain across my chest. I’ve been with the same PT/chiro since the accident, do I try a new practice? Massage therapy? Acupuncture? I’m exhausted and I can’t do anything after work and I need my life back. Any help would be very appreciated!

2024.05.08 05:54 Much_Commercial7103 First Root Canal (nerve damage?)

I had my first root canal yesterday— it has been a tooth that has been filled and re-filled in need of a crown so after years of issues with this tooth, I bit the bullet and got my first root canal yesterday.
The Endodontist was kind, local in network and had 4.9 reviews out of hundreds.
Having the root canal didn’t seem too different than a filling—
About 6 hours post the procedure last night I was in excruciating pain (I didn’t take Motrin or anything I usually only take pain meds if I need to.) I took two Motrin and called the endodontist and he called a pain med in. I took one Percocet and has vomiting but it helped with the pain.
Now I am at 36 hours post procedure, I had to take another Percocet today (I split in half and took half at 2pm and half at 8pm for the pain.) I expecting pain for 2-4 days but what is most concerning right now is my chin, bottom lip and jaw are still numb and tingly—-my fear is I may have nerve damage.
Would be so grateful for advice on this pain and facial numbness / tingling because I’m so freaked out right now. Thank you!

2024.04.29 08:21 cjwack Talking Cats, Hearing Voices, Animated Tapestries, and More Tripping Acid with a Family History of Schizophrenia

Proof read, edited, and formatted to hopefully be easy for The Trip Keeper to read on YouTube.
A lil about me: I have a family history of schizophrenia with two people in my family being diagnosed. I think that's why psychedelics hit me like a train. I know I'm one of the folks they say shouldn't tripping but I've already done it and I am not stopping anytime soon. I'm quite the spiritual hippie type. I live for the esoteric, bizarre, and werid side of tripping. I'm also quite experienced with psychedelics and drugs in general having tried alcohol, cigarettes, vapes, kava, Kratom, weed, oxycodone, hydrocodone, percocet, Hospital Morphine, Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvanse, Conserta, Nitrous, Acid, Shrooms, n-BOMEs, Synthetic shrooms, random Acid non n-BOME RCs, Hydroxyzine (only snorted while drunk), Phenibut, Promethazine w/o codeine, blue lotus, and a bunch of random herbs and nootropics.
A little context to story, I had got some liquid Acid dropped on Bottle Caps Candy from a family member we'll call R. R had called me up informing me he had liquid LSD and to bring a chalky candy when I came to pick it up. He dosed the candy in another room when I picked them up. When he brought them back there was a thick layer of liquid struggling to absorb into each hit so we smooshed another piece on top of each one, 3 tabs altogether. He told me each one was an equivalent of 2 to 3 hits of high quality LSD. I also hadn't tripped in 6 months at this point but that's a story for another sub. Though the reason why didn't have much to do with tripping itself nor anything fun like psychosis.
A couple days later I found myself with my bills caught up, a slow night on Doordash so no work, extra money, weed, some cigarettes, and my roommate was out visiting Family. I had showered and ate some Chinese before taking a short nap. When I woke up it was around 9pm, obviously already dark outside. I was in a good mood, had nothing to do, and didn't want to go back to sleep so I slapped an LSD bottle cap on my tongue and went for a walk.
One of the pieces dissolved really quickly, like less than a minute quick, while the other piece took atleast 15 to 20 minutes fully dissolve. I was slightly nervous about tripping the days prior and was even a lil scared before placing it on my tongue; but, that fear was completely annihilated when 5 to 7 minutes in I felt this electric tingle that started in the back of my head go down my spine. I started smiling, feeling super happy, and chilled out when the tingle reached the base of my spine. I thought to myself, "Wow, I can't believe I was scared to trip again, I feel amazing right now!!" I lit a cigarette and enjoyed my walk for awhile until I started coming to the end of a col-de-sac, the street I was on was on a downward slope I think this affected things but the end of the col-de-sac and the houses started stretching super tall and became super thin kind of like a fun house mirror. I was completely mesmerized by it till I was interrupted by this electric beeping that made my skeleton nearly jump out of my skin. I had looked over and saw this gray box with 2 pink lights on it sticking out of the ground and assumed that's where the beeping came from. I then straight sprinted home cause I wasn't sure if it was hallucination or not. I did go back a few days later and couldn't find the box.
After opening my front door the night is hard to remember linearly but I will try my best. I don't have the texts anymore from this night since I got a new phone. Once I got back home, I had to use the bathroom so I went did my business but while washing my hands I looked in the mirror and noticed my pupils are starting to look a lot like bowling balls. It was then, I noticed the reflection of the SpongeBob, Sandy, and Patrick on ketamine meme my roommate printed out and pinned on the wall. Their eyes were dilating more than normal and they were all swaying back and forth. I texted R to tell him I finally tried the acid and it's strong. It's roughly 10:40p.m. by this point, even though it had been 1 hour 40 minutes since dropping it had only felt like 30 or 40 minutes ago at the most. I was about to sit down and do a dab but I got a almost telepathic sense I was about to throw up rather than a physical feeling I was about to. After throwing up I texted R freaking out questioning if it was acid since it's not supposed to make you nauseous. He just told me "too much too fast" "calm down put your phone down and be safe". I didn't put my phone down.
I started finally doing some dabs after 2 or 3 big rips I looked over and saw 2 shadow people. One was a little girl with blonde hair, a yellow sun dress, no face, instead was an empty void. It was as if her head was an empty shell and her face was the hole. The other one was a middle aged man with short blackish gray balding hair dressed in overalls, no shirt, work boots, also no face. The second shadow person looked a lot like one of my deceased uncles. They didn't feel menacing or demonic nor even holy as one would expect an encounter of this type. I got up and walked to my kitchen probably to get water but I got distracted by a third shadow person who was a woman but I didn't get too good of a look before being distracted by my thoughts. I started stretching and thinking to myself, "well atleast the dark isn't so scary anymore compared to being schizophrenic" at the time it did feel very profound aswell as I am now genuinely less scared of the dark. There's also cardboard cut outs of the Elysian Full Haze and Full Contact IPA cans hung up in my kitchen. People were walking in and out of the giant head on the Full Haze poster, I thought they were sacrificing themselves to the massive head. Thought the dude on the Full Contact poster was holding my brain aswell.
I remember it was around this time the body load and vasoconstriction was getting so intense that my arms and legs felt lankier than normal and my jaw felt like it was wired shut. I drank some water and brought a glass back to my room. When I came back the ocean thunderstorm tapestry above bed had the clouds and ocean actually moving with the lightning striking. I have string lights behind that tapestry that wrap around to the conjoining wall. The string lights looked like technicolor rainbow stars forming beautiful constellations. Normally, they are only blue, yellow, green, red and twinkle but during the trip some were changing colors to pink, purple, violet, orange, and more colors that don't exist. While the tapestry was animated, it had no sound. There's a framed painting of a deer in a forest during the sunrise on the same wall. The light in the painting was actually coming through the painting as if it was a window with sunlight shining through. The deer even had his head down grazing when normally he has his head turned towards the viewer of the painting. I layed down and decided to throw on some music. I couldn't decide on a song, I hit skip on Spotify at least 30 times before settling on Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb, cliche I know, but they're one of my favorite bands and usually seem to find me when things start getting intense on psychedelics. I couldn't actually read anymore so I only knew it was Comfortably Numb by the hook and album art.
As I layed in bed I started stretching out and looking around the room. I finally started to relax a lil and calm down from thinking these were possibly nBOMes. I started to really lose myself in the trip. The slight movement of my air mattress made feel like I was floating on the ocean sea, which gave way to a euphoric sense of oneness and that I am an ocean of pure consciousness. The string lights above my bed were twinkling and reflecting slightly off the ceiling. The reflections were blending with the moving geometry on the ceiling. Next, I looked up at my Pokémon 20th anniversary poster. It was a bunch of black and white silhouettes of starter Pokémon from the first five or six gens with the ones in the middle being colored and shaped like Pikachu's head. Every silhouette was pulsating and almost bubbling.
At one point, I watched this abstract splatter colored tapestry for what felt like two hours, in reality it was probably only 30 or 40 minutes at the most. There were rotating hexagonal and octagonal pillars shooting out of the tapestry between the pillars it appeared to boil, the bursting bubbles had sparks flying off of them.
I can't remember exactly when this happened in the night so might as well stick it here. While hanging out in my bedroom, I got up to do what else but smoke more dabs. I did multiple in a row where I would do the whole ritual and forgot I had done so and follow it up with another. While sitting there, I light a cigarette to pass time and to just smoke more while conserving a lil on the wax. On my second or third cigarette in a row I started thinking to myself out loud that, "Ya know, Family Guy is right!! Vaping does look pretty fucking goofy. My twin flame out there probably thinks vaping looks goofy as fuck!! And smoking might look cool to some bitches but they give you cancer and shorten your life. It's less money for weed and psychedelics. I think after tonight I'm done smoking forever." I chain smoked a few cigarettes.
I think this is when I started hearing voices in my head. I was hearing random YouTubers, friends, celebrities, family members, and other random voices saying random words over over again. I truly thought I was hearing my sleeping neighbors' thoughts. I genuinely believed I had Telepathy. The only words I could make out vividly; however, was The Trip Keeper saying, "Gassid" over over like it was a soundbyte looping. At the time I took this as a sign to do Nitrous with Acid and that there was something spiritual I needed to see/experience from it. I was right, however this wasn't the night I did that combo as I had no nitrous at the time and it's an equally crazy experience but shorter story. I'm planning on posting that experience soon, also DO NOT huff nitrous it actually KILLS your brain cells.
Thoroughly freaking out again about hearing voices. I start frantically texting R, however I can't remember what for though. I even vividly remember asking R what would happen if I took more phrasing it "will things get more colorful or last longer?" He never responded. Since I couldn't read I was using speech to text to text R. I also had got up to pace through the house. Ordinarly, I would've left to go on another walk but I had convinced myself if that I had left again one of my cats would get out of the house and somehow I'd get arrested. I look up from my phone to notice a swirling florescent neon colored vortex of geomtry in the middle of my living room. The vortex started swirling towards me and started to suck the words out of my mouth. I saw the phrase ,"The only words that make sense are the ones I say out loud" get sucked out of my mouth by the vortex in bubble letters that distorted and mixed with geometry. As the bubble letters got closer to center of the vortex they would distort super cartoonishly, individual patterns and a mix of colors appeared over each letter. The vortex itself had a wigwag shape to it. At the time I thought in my head, "Damn this is what Jerry Garcia probably ment by "Steal your face right off your head"". I actually attempted to draw this out later on. See the drawing here if I can get imgur to work. I don't really remember turning the lights on all through my house but I vividly remember all the lights being off when the vortex stole my words. I don't remember how the vortex incident ended just that next all I know is all the lights are on suddenly and I'm walking out of my bedroom. It's probably 3 or 4am at this point cause I started hearing my neighbor cough and going in and out for cigarettes the rest of the night. I had laid my recliner, the voices had stopped but that was replaced with an intense loud buzzing inside of my head. I had my head on one of armrests, legs hanging off the other armrest, chair reclined, facing the wall. I was watching the logo on my clawhammer wall flag drip like white blood. My cats, of which I had 10 at the time, 5 being kittens still nursing, were running back and forth and playing with each other. Below the wall flag is a table with a wooden CD tower, my cats Cinderella and Oreo had jumped on the table at the same time. Completely in sync and as one fluid motion they stood up, turned to look at me, arched their backs, and sat down. Their coats were flowing and Cinderella had extra golden stripes in her fur. They stared deep into my eyes for a long time and were trying to ask me telepathically if I was doing okay. I more or less alternated between laying on the floor and my recliner for the next couple hours.
Every now and then I'd hear my neighbor out front coughing. I was debating whether or not to go talk him and wait for the sun to come up. Normally, I would've put on a show from myself at various points through the night but I had no internet at the time.
As the sun was starting to really come up and I was starting to really come down, I went outside and talked with my neighbor for awhile. Told him about my night, he's actually a little bit of a hippie too. I walked to the gas station to get some food. I felt like a zombie the whole way there and back. The light made my eyes sizzle like bacon on the Texas pavement in the middle of July. It felt like my brain was a steaming bowl of scrambled eggs. My jaw felt like I got my shit rocked by Mike Tyson. I came home, ate my powdered donuts despite only being able to taste it's texture which was low-key wigging me out, and watched either Space Ghost Coast to Coast or The Trip Keeper on my phone till I passed out.
The next morning (afternoon), my dad picked me up and we hung the whole day while I recovered and slowly returned to feeling human again. I bummed a cigarette off my dad and decided while smoking it that it was my last cigarette. I actually quit all nicotine for a month and half after this night. I started back up purely because of a bad (tested real) Acid/Nitrous Trip.
I do wanna add while not using nicotine I had vivid dreams about smoking cigarettes and vaping. Keep posted for the follow up stories about my bad Acid/Nitrous Trip, Smoking Dreams, and Snorting Hydroxyzine with Alcohol cause I bet The Trip Keeper wants to hear that last one.

2024.04.08 01:40 iamjenough Frustrated with Treatment

I woke up about a month ago with what felt like a knot in my shoulder blade area…it hurt but I was like eh, no big deal. It will go away.
Spoiler alert: it did not go away.
It kept getting worse and spreading pain further. It is up into my neck, my entire shoulder, my tricep, down into my elbow, and makes my fingers tingle occasionally. The pain is BAD and I even ended up in the ER one day because I couldn’t take it anymore. They gave me steroids and one Percocet.
After trying that, plus deep tissue massage, heat, ice, NSAIDs, Tylenol, and stretching, I saw a chiropractor. He saw me a few times and took x-rays that show my neck is completely straight, no curve, and shows bone spurs and disc degeneration at the least. He made an appointment for me at a local orthopedic surgeon office. I was so hopeful.
Orthopedic surgeon saw me for about 5 minutes. He spent most of it going over my x-rays and how he sees like 46 different problems with my neck and thinks the problem disc is somewhere in C-5-C-7 and that it’s probably compressing a nerve. Then he says he can’t help me with pain, but he can get me in for an MRI and see me back in a week and a half! He gives me meloxicam after I beg for SOMETHING stronger than Advil, and gives me a referral to Pain Management, which will apparently take 6-8 weeks.
The pain is so bad and it’s affecting my life. I can’t sit at my desk longer than mayyyybe a couple hours, and NOTHING is working. I’ve even been taking some gabapentin from a surgery last year, and nothing.
Is this the normal course of action? Do they ever give you anything for pain? Or is it just like a “suck it up buttercup” situation?
Has anyone found anything that helps?

2024.03.29 01:23 ima_be_me 1 Week Out - Pain Fluctuating Day to Day Normal?

I (45f) got diagnosed with shingles one week ago. I have rashes on my upper back, chest, and arm. It's worse on my back which is where it all started. I started an antiviral last Thursday and have 2 more days of it. My doctor also prescribed Percocet for pain and Gabapentin for me to take at bedtime. I did 2 Percocets and quit those! I hated the way they made me feel and it only dulled the pain anyway. I just try to manage (LOL albeit badly) with Tylenol and ibuprofen.
I had been sleeping really well at night despite horrible pain all day, expect for last night. I thought I was turning a corner. The deep in-my-soul pain was subsiding and I was mostly dealing with the electrifying, needle pricking pain. But today, all the pain was there. Deep pain. Tingling pain. Back, shoulder, arm, and even my armpit. If I didn't know better I would have thought I was having a heart attack!
I guess I kept thinking this week would be the worst and I'd start feeling better. It's this really a multiple week thing? I worked from home this week but I can't imagine going into the office and wearing real clothing yet! I'm in my husband's baggiest tshirts! Sorry for the pity party. I just couldn't even comprehend the level of pain that would come with this 😭

2024.02.10 08:13 aquarianwell Something strange happened tonight

So I attended a breath work and sound healing event tonight. Overall I thought it was beautiful and was so happy to attend. My fibro pain was about a 5/6 when I arrived. It’s been cold and y’all know how that goes. But after the event my body started to get the nerve tingles all over and before I knew it I was in debilitating 12/10 pain. I even threw up. I rarely use opiates but tonight called for a Percocet, I even thought about going to the er.
I’ve never experienced a fibro pain spike like this and am trying to understand. Was it the sound vibrations? Emotional release? Has anyone else experienced something like this bc I haven’t.
Anything helps, friends. Thanks for reading as I lay here writhing.

2024.01.23 06:20 FinsFan131211 Back to Back Facial Shingles

48/M. Holy hell. First symptoms started 12/29, entire right side of my scalp down to the middle of my lips. The worst numb/ electrical/ tingle pain ever, massive toothache and ear ache. Then blisters break out inside of half my mouth and tongue up to the scalp. Went to the ER 1/1. They put me on 7 day Valtrex, 1G/ 3 times a day, Prednisone steroid, Percocet, anti-nausea meds and a ear antibiotic. 10 days of complete nightmare, can’t sleep, can’t eat, every breath like battery acid. Day 12 I am feeling better and took the fam on a trip. Everything was fine until I got back. Day 17, the same horrific numb electrical pain in half my mouth up to my scalp. I give it a day thinking it was just still burning off and sure enough a new blister wave mouth to scalp. Went to urgent care. She confirmed shingles part 2 and put me back on 14 day Valtrex and Prednisone. Grateful for this thread where I have learned some things because the MD’s look this up on-line in the other room, give you the anti-virals and are glad they are not you for a week, or four. Tips, not MD advice. 1. If it is in your mouth get the mouth canker sore medication ASAP. It gives you a few hours of relief. The narcotics will NOT stop the pain. 2. Buy the strongest Advil or Motrin you can get, you will likely run out of narcotics before you are done. 3. I tried Calamine lotion and Calmoseptine on the rash. I don’t think it worked and for me it seemed like it prolonged the healing by agitating and drying out the process. It needs to simmer, then blister, then ooze, then bleed, then scab over. 4. They say do not scratch or touch it. If you can do that, you are stronger than me. On the second round, during the intense 2-6 day window I went with just a simple strong lotion and kept a towel in bed to touch the rash and not scrape it to try and ease the itch and pain to sleep. Praying the anti-virals extinguish it this time. Please share your itch/ burn remedy tips. Good luck and speedy recovery everyone!

2024.01.22 02:25 rosegoldgloss NYC/NJ area... in need of new pain management who takes me seriously

I'm in Bergen County with great insurance, but here is my history:
Lower lumbar sciatic radiculopathy, spinal stenosis, facet arthropathy (L4-L5, L5-S1) started in spring 2021.
Microdiscectomy in spring 2022 - bedridden ever since.
Laminectomy in summer 2023 - bunch of tingling since then along with major tingling throughout limbs, as well as a seroma.
Finding a pain management team that prescribes according to patient's physical condition feels impossible at this point. There's of course a tolerance build-up from being on P the past few years as well as my pain being the worst it's ever been where I literally am in bed 24/7... trying to get away ASAP from this new one (either you go along with their injections or kicked out) but seems impossible.
I would LOVE to be able to move around and do physical therapy but that would require my pain level to be controlled, which is not happening. I've done tons of MRIs and CT scans, EMGs, etc. and have tried every non-op medication with either no success or terrible side effects (looking at you, gabapentin).
Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. My life is pretty much non-existent and my loved ones do not comprehend that requiring pain medication is not a matter of choice.
(ps. I've been on Percocet 10 and since 2022 at 6 per day. My ideal would be to switch out 2 for Dilaudid which actually reduced my tingling a lot when it was given after my most recent surgery).

2023.12.27 02:00 NovaLemonista MRI from this morning. How bad is it? I have a Dr appt on Thursday

Just curious if any of you can make heads or tails of this.
After an excruciating (you all know the pain - mine was back/glute/anterior hip/shin) first episode 6 weeks ago, I was doing ‘ok’ by 3 weeks in. I was doing PT 2x a week, finally sleeping, and walking with less pain. 2 weeks ago, I sat on the hardwood floor for a while. That led to another horrible experience /flare that I actually got some Percocet for. Took that for 3 days, and then on to Ibuprofen 800. However the pins and needles got worse down my calf this time. Still, the pain has subsided a bit. No pain when sitting, but definitely when I walk. Mostly in my hip, but a bit of back also. I’m doing short walks, puttering around the house just to get circulation and blood flow. Stopping if it really hurts. Still have some tingling when walking or standing. Still going to PT.
MRI shows a herniated disc, but what I am confused about is that it says the herniation is causing severe left neural foraminal stenosis. Is that different than just a herniated disc, or don’t they all cause neural foraminal stenosis? Is that just a medical term saying the disc is pushing out causing narrowing and hitting a nerve? Because it also states that there is only mild spinal canal stenosis present. Because of my age (58) I assumed it would be a lot of disc degeneration / spinal stenosis at all levels. I have always been super active and thought there would be a lot of wear and tear up and down my spine.
I’ll see my Dr Thursday, but am just curious if someone can give me a bit more insight until then, as far as the report. There are some really smart and informed Redditors here, hope you can help. I’m a bit impatient. Thanks!
FINDINGS:There is mild levoscoliosis. There is no listhesis. Lumbar vertebral body heights are maintained throughout. Bone marrow does not demonstrate any suspicious lesions. The conus medularis appears normal.
L4-5: There is a left lateral disc herniation extending into the neural foramina and result in severe left neural foraminal stenosis. Mild spinal canal stenosis present. - - - L5-S1: Normal, Normal paravertebral soft tissues. - -
  • - - IMPRESSION: - - - 1. At L4/5 there is a left lateral disc herniation extending into the neural foramina and resulting in severe left neural foraminal stenosis. There is also mild spinal canal stenosis at this level. - - 2. There is no spinal canal or neural foraminal stenosis at any other level.
Edited because I’m new to Reddit and don’t know how to format 😖 Hope you can read it.

2023.12.13 04:13 Aethirin Transverse Process Fracture Recovery

Hi there!
My partner(34 f) recently fell down some concrete stairs resulting in a lumbar transverse process fracture, closed. We went to the ER immediately where she ended up sitting in a hard wheelchair for 5 hours, but that's besides the point, and got a CT scan of her lumbar spine and one of her pelvis to confirm.
When the doctor came by to speak with us, he said it wasn't anything major and the primary treatment will be rest and pain management. She was given some morphine and flexeril early on in the visit and some oxycodone plus toradol right before discharge.
She's been home for 3 days now and that brings me to my question. She hasn't been able to walk to the bathroom without extreme pain, including burning and tingling sensations in her outer thigh; is this normal for this point in recovery, or is it a sign there is more going on? We feel a little lost and without guidance, can't afford another trip to the ER, and won't be able to see the follow up doctor for at least several days more.
If you need to know more, I'm happy to provide more information. Anything you can tell us would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: I forgot to mention that she was prescribed 1 Percocet every 6 hours as needed, Diclofenac 2x daily, and 5% lidocaine patches. The patches hurt too much when removing so she doesn't use those and the others don't seem to help the pain when walking, only when motionless in bed.

2023.11.16 17:23 NickPontiff Day 1 post op. PLIF L5

Stopped taking the IV meds last night. Just on Percocet and Robaxin at the moment. Incision doesn’t hurt too bad but lower back muscles are pretty sore. Probably about a level 5 pain. 6 or 7 when I try to sit up or stand. Overall in a pretty good mood. I didn’t actually have much if any nerve pain going into this, only when I walked or stood for long periods of time. Had occasional skin numbness on my calves and small muscle spasms, but nothing debilitating like many of you. Also had pretty consistent lower back pain/ache after standing a while.
I had a pars defect so this was mostly preventive so that I could have it done at a time that was convenient for me while I am still young and fit.
Don’t have any nerve pain currently but do have some slight weakness in my right foot as well as tingling/falling asleep feeling in the bottom of the foot. I imagine the nerve on that side has just been stretched pretty good.
I know I enjoyed reading other people’s progress posts for peace of mind and a better understanding of what to expect so I figured i’d share mine.

2023.06.27 09:10 TheTardisHunter Day 1 Post-Op Septoplasty + Turbinate Reduction

I ( 24F) broke my septum in a fight back in 2023. It never really bothered me much, but the last year or so I’ve had crippling sinus congestion and constant sinusitis. Afton, Flonase, Steam, massages, nothing helped. So finally I bit the bullet and scheduled. Septoplasty+turbinate reduction last month.
I almost scared myself shitless seeing some of the reviews on Reddit. And I’m sure a few of you have as well. So I’m hoping this can give you a small peace of mind. I’ve had two high risk c sections and for some reason this surgery terrified me way more.
I arrived at the hospital yesterday around 10:30 am. I checked in, got dressed into gown, and assigned to a room. They instantly gave me some IV fluids (I was very dehydrated from fasting) and took blood work. They also used afrin to help prepare my sinuses.
Around 11:30, I had fully spoken with anesthesiologist, doctor, and nurses. They answered all my questions and made me feel quite relieved. Make sure to make a list of questions so you don’t forget!
It’s important to note that I opted to have the procedure done under twilight anesthesia, due to having low blood pressure my entire life I figured it was a safer idea. The anesthesiologist seemed surprised, but agreed and would stay in the operating room the entire time.
About 12:25 they pumped me with some fentanyl in my IV. She joked that it was “the same dose she just gave a 4 year old patient,” which made me feel slightly better because I’m not big on sedatives for obvious reasons. I felt a little tired, but not groggy or disoriented by any means. I kisses my boyfriend goodbye and got wheeled off.
The last thing I remember truly is them asking me to Slide Over to the operation table. I assume that’s when they administered the propofol or whatever concoction they used. I was terrified I’d feel pain or “wake up” during the surgery, but I remember NOTHING past this moment. It’s like I blinked and time traveled to the recovery room.
I woke up by 1:30, according to my doctor. I have no recollection of awaking at this time or speaking with him, but he insists I was coherent . I didn’t feel too much pain, and I didn’t feel too “hungover” or loopy. Just hungry and cranky that I had to sit in the recovery room for about an hour.
By the time they took me to my main room about 2:30, that’s when the pain hit. They’d given me a dose of 5/325 Percocet at 2, and it wasn’t touching the pain at all. Throbbing, almost burning pain filled my nose. I have a high pain tolerance and it brought me to tears. By 3, they gave me another Percocet and another dose of Afrin. I would say it took an hour to feel “decent.” After that. They removed the packing in my nose , which was very uncomfortable but not painful. Be prepared to see the biggest blood clots of your life.
I didn’t leave the hospital until 4, and I don’t know if that’s a standard amount (3 hours roughly) to stay post op, or because I was bleeding pretty decently and my pain.
I was wheeled to my car, but really had no trouble standing or walking. I just felt tired and stuffy.
Pretty much my only complaint is the stuffiness is INSANE. Worse than I ever experienced. Definitely have cough drops or a humidifier to prepare for a sore throat. I’ve been downing ice cream all day.
The bleeding slowed up pretty fast for me, and only would start trickling if I accidentally bent over or my head was angled improperly in bed.
I started to ache a few hours ago, but I decided against the Percocet and took a 600 mg Tylenol which took care of my pain.
My doctor is in his late 60’s and is somehow “old fashioned” with his advice. He doesn’t want me to use saline rinse, but wash my nose with a Qtip 3x a day w/ hydrogen peroxide and then apply antibiotic cream. I’m also on 10 day amoxicillin pill. I’ve heard a lot of negative stories about using hydrogen peroxide and qtip on a fresh, irritated, incision, but I followed his advice. Didn’t hurt but did tingle. Was insanely gentle doing it.
I cannot WAIT to get my splints taken out Friday that’s for sure. I will ask him about saline sprays and discontinuing afrin then (I read longterm use can make it much worse.)
Again, I’m only on day 1, but it’s more than bearable. It’s not enjoyable, but I had no issues walking, talking, eating, and doing my usual stuff around the house. If I suddenly feel worse tomorrow I will definitely update. I’m a stripper and I’m hoping that when my splints are removed friday I’ll be able to go back to work. Prolly no extensive pole work, but I should be able to handle sitting around talking to customers provided I don’t have a sudden nosebleed.
TLDR: was absolutely scared shitless for months at the thought of a septoplasty/ turbinate reduction. With twilight sedation it was the quickest and easier shit ever. Recovery is definitely lame, but easy to handle even without opioids. Just relax a little and know your body’s limits. And don’t let the internet freak you out too much!

2022.12.22 11:26 themuze- Somehow COVID is only the cherry on top of my sucky sundae…

Welcome to the suck and just absolute burning dumpster fire my health has been for the past 7 weeks. Can not sleep and need a place to vent my frustrations.
November 5th while at the gym I irritated my existing herniated discs in my lower back. Normally I have a very strong knowledge of my limits and I even was doing a lighter work out because my back has been a bit achey but nothing I was not able to handle.
When I attempted to stand up from stretching at the end of my work out I was basically doubled over and could barely walk to the car. Thankfully my husband was with me and helped me. We got me home, showered, and in bed with ice hoping it would pass.
Next morning I am not able to even sit up with out assistance let alone walk. We decide to go to the ER. So we haphazardly get me ready to leave and I crawl to the stairs and slide down them one by one on my butt. Get me in the car and go to the hospital.
At the ER we had to wait for almost 45 minutes and I was in excruciating pain. When I was finally able to be seen the nurse who was helping me almost made me collapse because she insisted I get into bed on my own. I also attempted to explain that I couldn’t lay down on my left side and needed to lean on my right side. She again didn’t listen.
She ended up calling for an assisted carry to get me into bed which was a bit over kill but better than doing it in my own. The other nurse who I assume was the charge nurse told her she would take it from here and apologized for her attitude. I am at this point in tears and hyperventilating from the pain.
The nurse and my husband help me calm down. After that I’m seen by the doctor. The don’t do much but give me every pain med you could think of. Toradol shots, lidocaine patches, Percocet, and flexeril. They send me on my way home with prescriptions for the pain meds and a note to follow up with my primary.
I spent the next week basically bed ridden only getting up to use the bathroom and eat. By the end of the week I was improving a little but still struggled greatly and was in almost constant pain. I attempted to work from home for a week but was unable to even complete 1/3 of my normal work load and I was leaving myself bed ridden each day from the attempt to complete any work.
My husband is an absolute saint and is helping me with basically everything. He even rushed home from work at one point because I got stuck on the toilet before I had the cane to help me up.
During that week I also called my primary care doctor to get an appointment and nothing is open until January 13th. At this point I am still not better and I am out of pain meds and clearly need more done. So we go to the orthopedic walk in clinic. They do some X-rays, order an MRI, start me on prednisone, reup the flexeril, and refer me to one of the orthopedic spinal specialists.
I have my appointment with him about a week later. He orders physical therapy for me and says to rest as much as possible and recommends I go off of work on FMLA (in my state it’s the same as short term disability). I book physical therapy and go home and rest.
I almost forgot to mention the X-ray showed my existing herniations, some signs of pre arthritis, and decreased space between vertebrae. None of this is new but an updated MRI would show any worsening of these existing issues.
All of this was happening right around thanksgiving and it unfortunately prevented us from going to see my husbands dads family in Florida. But we were able to make it to his moms house which was just as nice and they accommodated to my needed to lay down occasionally without question.
I submitted my FMLA claim earlier this month, had the MRI done, started physical therapy and was doing pretty well! The healing wasn’t linear but I was noticing improvements and was able to be a bit more independent and was no longer in constant debilitating pain.
My physical therapist about three weeks into my therapy suggests I do a pool session once a week as the weightlessness will help me get a good stretch and the heat will relax my muscles. I schedule my first one for the following week and look forward to the continued work on my healing.
After my first pool session I am absolutely exhausted which my physical therapist assured is normal and encourages me to stay hydrated and get plenty of rest. I get home take a shower eat lunch and the second I hit the bed I was out cold for 4 hours. I woke up around 5pm a bit stiff but still felt relatively okay.
I went to bed and the next morning I woke up back in immense pain. I almost blacked out sitting on the toilet and was barely able to eat or really function at all. This was so disheartening and I felt I had just undid nearly a month of hard work to get myself back to normal.
And I get an email that my FMLA case was denied because of a date error made by my doctor and a misunderstanding of some tax forms. This thankfully was easy to fix but now delayed my FMLA income anther 10-15 days to allow for processing and review.
I go back to the clinic and get another round of prednisone and more flexeril. They are also able to see my MRI and it showed that one of my herniations was now bulging and it was making contact with my left sciatic nerve causing the severe nerve and joint pain as well as muscle spasms and tingling or numbness in my feet.
The clinic doctor suggests I take a break from physical therapy and no more pool. She also orders an epidural to see if that may offer more long lasting pain relief. I go home take the medications and am again back on bed rest.
Because of course I can’t just be injured and there has to be even more insult added this regression in pain also caused me to miss my husband, sister, and cousin graduate from college (they all went to the same university and happened to all be graduating this semester) with their bachelors degrees. Additionally my sister and I planned a family gathering for the three of them to have a combo graduation party which I also had to miss.
Thankfully I was able to watch a live stream from bed but it was not the same as being there and it broke my heart to not be able to support them in person. But I am processing through that and trying to focus on healing. And now for the cherry on top….
On Monday my husband came down with a cold, no biggy he takes some DayQuil. But he is worsening throughout the day and gets sent home from work he goes to bed early hoping to sleep it off. Tuesday he wakes up with more symptoms and I wake up with a sore throat.
We both take COVID tests to be safe and per my husbands return to work requirements and both test positive. Mind you we have been very cautious and avoided COVID for nearly three years.
Our symptoms are sore throat, post nasal drip, congestion, body aches, chills, feeling flush, fever, coughing, loss of energy, and for me insomnia from anxiety. And of course I can’t take DayQuil or NyQuil due to being on flexeril and the increased risk of serotonin syndrome which can cause fun stuff like hallucinations, psychosis, and seizures.
And more insult to injury we will have to miss any of the Christmas celebrations we would have attended. I am the literally embodiment of I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. Thank you for taking the time read my story of suck. Sincerely, death warmed over.

The pain started 8 weeks ago and I waited 2 weeks to go to the doctor because I'm in the midst of so many other health issues. The first doctor i saw at urgent care believed it to be sciatica and prescribed me muscle relaxers, he told me I should feel better in 2-4 weeks. The pain continued to increase in severity, it has spread down both legs, my arms and legs tingle, I also am having pain in my rectum which is unusual because I do not use my rectum, this is embarrassing but I've started urinating on myself I went back to my own GP and he is concerned about Cuada Equina Syndrome. The pain is now to the point I can't walk, it is debilitating. They are having me see a neurosurgeon this Thursday and I will get an MRI while I'm there. Pain medication isn't touching this pain it only makes me a little drowsy so I can sleep. Am I ok to wait until Thursday or should I go to an emergency room. I've had many surgeries and I've been in a alot of pain before but I've never experienced anything like this. Thank you in advanced doctors

2022.11.19 02:41 Justin_92 What, if anything, does DOT say about back surgery as far as recovery times go?

I hurt my back about 6 months ago and it’s been kind of up and down as far as pain goes. It got a lot worse about 3 weeks ago because we are having to move apartments. It got so unbearable that I finally caved today when I was unable to help my wife move all our shit and so I went to my PCP. He was concerned and said that my sciatic nerve is pinched and something about “cross sciatica” or some such. Basically he could make my right foot tingle and go numb by lifting my left foot..? He prescribed me a steroid pack and Percocet for the next 5 days and told me “if it gets worse again after you stop taking these, then you’re gonna need an MRI and most likely surgery.”
The reason I’m posting is because I’m faced with a major life changing decision, potentially, and I wanted your feedback. My uncle broke his back way back in the early 90’s and it ended his CDL career.
Can someone please comfort me and tell me this is just a minor surgery and everything will be fine and I’ll be back to driving in no time? Or do I need to suck it up and just keep pushing myself until I physically no longer can work because this surgery is gonna be a career ender like it was for my uncle….
I’m sorry if I seem like I’m all over the place right now. I’m at home and also taking Percocet..
