2024.05.18 19:39 Gileotine All-red gear. Including motorcycle. Is this a stupid idea in LA?

Hi there. I'm a new rider and I'm getting all my gear ready before I get my motorcycle. Here's a problem though, LA has bloods and crips. Since I was a kid I was told never to wear all red or all blue or all any color, and def don't put a rag in your pocket with that color (I dont know if this is all myth but I got yanked by a blood at school once who told me not to wear a red ballcap?)
Anyways, the question: I love red. Like, I really love the color red. I got a red Arai helmet and it's in candy red and it transfixes me. So I want to get a bike with some red on it, and my gear either white/red or red. Boots and gloves too.
Is this a stupid idea? Or am I overthinking the gear situation.
Edit: I may have just revealed how sheltered I was while living in LA oh god

2024.05.18 19:14 Habanero_Eyeball Let's talk rider training! What kind of training have you had and did you find it helpful? What you would do differently?!

Title pretty much says it all.
When I was first learning to ride, in my mid-30s, I was very nervous about bikes. I'd never had one, dad wouldn't allow it, BUT I'd ridden plenty of bicycles and even raced bicycles for a time. So I felt VERY comfortable on 2 wheels.
I wanted to ride but I didn't want to hurt myself, the bike or other vehicles. SO how does one go from my place to a really good, really safe rider?
That's when I found the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Beginning Rider Course. I took that and loved it. I learned so much about counter steering, handling emergencies, braking, low speed handling, what lanes to ride in (hint: there are 3 lanes in each traffic lane) and more.
I also picked up some books and actually did some parking lot exercises to get a better feel for my bike.
But that's all.
I'm wondering if the more advanced rider classes are any good or not. Just curious about your training experience and whether or not you'd do the classes again.

Unfortunately I think I already know the answer to this, but figured I’d ask anyways. I am Canadian with residency in Australia, currently living in WA.
I have had my motorcycle license in Canada for 8 years, and have ridden 1000+ cc Harley’s for majority of that time. Unfortunately due to living in small remote towns for work I have never gotten around to doing the last road test to get my full stage license in Canada. So I have technically been on a Learners license for those 8 years.
WA wants to start me at the bottom of the LAMS program which means riding with a supervisor (or someone on the back, how would this make sense for a new rider?) and riding a sub 660cc bike.
Is there any steps I could take to try and get a more appropriate conversion of licenses? Would a letter from my issuing body stating I’ve never been CC limited etc do any good? is there other states with less stringent process? I could get my full license in Canada but likely wouldn’t be for at least a year from now.
I have 2 bikes coming from overseas that are vintage and larger than 660cc.
Just looking for ideas, any information would be helpful.

I'm upping my license now to A2 equivalent (the middle category) and want to level up my ride, and for maybe obvious reasons the electric option is not too viable; firstly price, but also somewhat of the issues with charging (not the worst in my area but also not the best), so I want to consider gas-bikes.
I know that to a lot of people feel that loud bikes are cool and fun, but to me it's the exact opposite and I prefer my bike to be as quiet as possible (which is why I initially got an electric one).
What are the quietest - but still otherwise fun and reliable - bikes that I should look into in the middle license category (European A2 equivalent)?
Also I should share that I am in not way, shape or form a "rider" or "motorhead" in the sense that I know jack shit about vehicle maintenance (beyond the obvious tires and brakes) and I am not too much "in the culture", beyond just the fact that I ride a motorcycle, so please bear with possibly dumb questions by me.

2024.05.18 14:10 Lasse_B Ceramic coat? Looking for advice to keep bike as neat as possible (for me)

Howdy to you fine folks of motorcycles,
I'm getting a new bike soon, a BMW R1250 GS Adventure, so I'm looking into the many options to preserve its looks as well as is feasible. I don't want to do any detailing work, because the fiddlier it gets, the more fed up I become. Rinse and be done is where it's at for me. Maybe go over with a rag if there's still some dirt left on a not too difficult to reach spot, but that's the extent of what I'm willing to do. I know it's difficult with a premise like that, but what kind of paint protection do you recommend?
I ride on 90% road, 10% terrain / gravel roads and do this for about 20000km per year. I'm looking to keep the bike for at least three years and sell it during its fourth or fifth.
The parts I'd like to protect is the tank (top and sides), the fender in the front as well as the paint in between the two, the side panels covering the radiators and the side panels overing the battery. This basically means there's a mix of surfaces, painted ones as well as unpainted plastic ones. If at all possible, I'd also like to protect the crank shaft enclosure, the muffler and the piping.
Was looking to get it foil wrapped, until I saw a video recently explaining that foil is rather soft, so bugs have a tendency to get stuck even more. Since bugs are rather acidic and foil wraps don't tolerate that very much, bugs tend to leave nasty marks in the foil wrap.
Ceramic coating / liquid glass looks interesting, but I cannot find answers to a couple of questions:

I often need to hug the tank using my legs / knees, just as you're supposed to do as a rider. Does ceramic coating still offer enough resistance so my knees won't slide off, or would you recommend to not coat the sides of the tank / use something other than ceramic coating in that area?
The buttons of my jacket occasionally scratch over the tank when I'm leaning forward. Does ceramic coating provide enough abrasion resistance or should I get a tank pad anyway? I realize this is somewhat of a contradiction to the previous point, but I've never experienced ceramic coating so I don't know what to expect.
Is ceramic coating heat resistant enough to actually put it onto the muffler and exhaust pipes?

If you're completely opposed to ceramic coating, what else would you recommend?

2024.05.18 10:49 xendistar SCB STATEMENT: KING’S LYNN SPEEDWAY

Having already been under investigation for postponing a League fixture on the 4^th May 2023, the Directors of the BSP Ltd reported the King’s Lynn club to the Speedway Control Bureau (SCB) for postponing the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership fixture on the 9^th May 2024 stating the reason for the postponement was lack of rider availability.
The members of the SCB viewed the evidence given where the King’s Lynn team were missing two riders namely Tobiasz Musielak who is currently absence with a speedway injury and Patryk Wojdylo who was competing in a National Championship in Poland.
With the facilities available to the King’s Lynn team and three Premiership Teams not competing on the 9^th May as well as a host of top-class Championship riders available the SCB supported the BSP Ltd Directors view that this fixture should have gone ahead.
Due to the actions of the King’s Lynn Promotion by postponing this fixture when facilities were available, and also already being under investigation due to the fixture being postponed in May 2023, this Breached the following SCB Regulation –

017.2 Breach of Rules

f) Any proceedings or acts prejudicial to the interests of any part or body of the ACU, SCB, BSP Ltd or of the sport of motorcycling generally.
Due to this breach the King’s Lynn Club have been issued with the following penalty as per SCB Regulation 017.3 Penalties –

Point Penalty – The Removal of two (2) ROWE Motor Oil Premiership League Points.

No further comment from the SCB on this matter will be made.

So there's a youtube/tiktok/onlyfans girl that does JPop and Bubblegum trap "artist" that caused a serious motorcycle accident last month. She "wasn't paying attention" and "didn't even look" when having fully committed and almost completed a left turn decided to make it into a right turn causing a collision that resulted in the rider having to be taken to a trauma center by helicopter and being out of work for close to a month. So while she's globetrotting and living her best life, he's still nursing injuries and struggling to keep the bills paid.
She's shown no signs of care or concern or remorse for the life she damaged. Maybe it's that I'm just disgusted by the social media "celebrities" and their selfish and careless behavior. Maybe it's that I feel like she needs to be thoroughly reminded and have it drilled into her head so that she starts paying attention if she is driving, especially in an area with lots of motorcycles on the road.
Part of me feels like it's petty and low. Part of me feels like anyone who's careless behavior results in harm coming to another needs to have it drilled into their head so that they don't make the same mistake again and hurt someone else.

2024.05.18 06:30 KelsoT7 As an owner of multiple brand motorcycles I’ve made a few observations.

So I’ll start off by saying I own a Harley Softail Street Bob and a Yamaha Tenere. I’ve had the Harley for a few years now and it’s what I learned to ride on, but I recently picked up the Yamaha to ride on the dirt roads around where I live. I absolutely love the Tenere to the point where the Harley barely gets ridden these days.
Anyway, this is what I’ve noticed, Harley riders only wave to other Harley riders. It’s rather comical, I’m not much for waving myself I just sort of accept it but man, they won’t wave at you if you’re not on a Harley. However, when I’m riding the Harley all other motorcycle riders would wave to me. The other observation is outside of the Harley community, riders are way more friendly. I’ve talked to more people about the Tenere than I ever did when I was/am riding the Harley. People will roll down their window to talk to me at stop lights asking how I like it. It’s really strange for me.
I’ll end this by saying I couldn’t care less if I ever wave or talk to anyone about motorcycles, I’m at point in my life where I just enjoy my own company. This was strictly an observation, if someone wants to talk motorcycles, sure I’ll entertain a conversation, but I mainly keep to myself.

2024.05.18 04:38 Jazz-23 I need some input on a dilemma

Currently I'm a relatively drowsy car driver, not proud of it at all. I live in the USA so I have to drive to get from a to b. I'm generally pretty safe when it comes to driving drowsy (I will pull over and take a nap/drink wateget food etc), but still scary asf.
On the other hand, when I'm on the motorcycle I am more alert than ever. No matter how tired I thought I felt before getting on the bike, as soon as I put up the kickstand I am wired and I feel much more connected with the road and the cars around me.
My dilemma here is this: Will I be safer commuting in a car drowsy, or being drowsy but then waking up on a motorcycle? Will I unknowingly be affected by my tiredness on the bike therefore risking my safety further or is the quiet relaxing car drive putting my ass to sleep more dangerous?
Just wanted some opinions from any riders who have ridden after a long day etc. Thank you reddit!

so my boyfriend has always been into motorcycles, started doing motocross as a kid and moved onto motorcycles as an adult. i have been on a normal bike maybe three times in my whole life lol.
he recently got a new cruiser thats better for 2 people. before he had a sport bike that was only made for one rider so i never really asked to get on the bike. its been about 3 weeks and its basically all he rides now, he even got a nice backrest for me so i can lean back and it has a nice storage rack, but i get so nervous to get on and he just makes me feel bad for it. i understand he got the bike in mind making it more comfortable for the passenger which is sweet and i thanked him for the gesture but i dont want to get on every single time and it upsets him.
its a genuinely horrifying experience about 60% of the time w a lot of risk that is just not for me. and hell just be like “you’ll get over it cmon” or compares me to other women that were into the whole bike thing and it just makes me feel bad. and he thinks i just dont wanna get out which is half true but i always tell him im down to take the car and or meet him halfway out the city that answer has not worked because its not his way. idk im starting to have doubts because i dont want to have to explain why motorcycles are scary everytime my partner wants to go out

I'm currently looking at e-bikes and am very close to pulling the trigger. Worried the new tariffs will raise prices and thinking it might be better to order now (at least, that's my excuse).
I want something that can go around 40mph (~65 kph), has about 40ah with plenty of range for throttle-only riding. After a good amount of research, I'm debating between getting a 60v "e-bike" like the Wired Freedom or Five-Star vs. a 60v "e-moto" like the Talaria XXX.
It seems like online reviews rarely compare these two options directly, so I wanted to ask if anyone's had experience with both of them (including similar products) and can help me make a decision. Wish I could try these in person and support a local shop, but that's not an option. Thanks!
What I like with Talaria / e-moto:

More performance (seems to be about 20-30% more acceleration and capability on paper?).
Mid-drive "motorcycle" layout (figure it's better balance, less unsprung weight)
Smaller, without those giant 26" fat tires (I'm a shorter rider & want to be able to get my feet down comfortably)
Feels like it will be more durable long-term, parts will be easier to source / replace

What I like with Wired / e-bike:

Better value & cheaper (seems like this class has the absolute best performance per dollar?)
Option to pedal (looking to ride throttle mostly)
Has a rack and can carry some cargo

Few other details if it helps anyone give advice:

I will be mostly street riding with some trails, urban commuting. Part "get out there more" and part "reduce the need to drive"
I live in an area where the cops generally aren't too strict, only issue would be having the option to ride (at a reasonable speed) in parks / on trails occasionally.
While I like the idea that a Wired or similar theoretically can pass for a bike, I figure given it's large size I won't be fooling anyone if I decide to go on a bike trail, even if I ride responsibly.
I did consider scooter / motorcycle options; however, I want something I can ride in the bike lanes. Figure it's lower risk and I don't want to feel like I need full motorcycle safety gear. But, I do want something that can keep up with traffic on small streets, have fun, and get me there in a reasonable time.
Generally not a fan of the "moped" style bikes like the motor goat. Not ruling them out, but I feel like they're an uncomfortable middle option.

Finally, I can say: "Hello, fellow riders!"
Today I bought a motorcycle that I have been dreaming of for two years. It's a 2023 Honda CBR650R with a quickshifter, dark windshield, a MIVV exhaust, and 6000 kilometers on the odometer. The bike is limited to 35 kW, and once I get my full license, I can de-restrict it. It will also get new tires.
I want to thank everyone who commented on my previous post. I'm curious if there are any hidden features that you don't read about everywhere.

Inspired by trolls on posts about congestion pricing on this sub, I wanted to give a guide to folks who are misunderstood, confused, or otherwise apathetic to congestion pricing and give people a guide to push back against the most common arguments.
1) "It'll never work here" - Sure it will. It has worked in London, Stockholm, and Singapore to great success. The London metro area has about 15m people, not far off from the 19m in NYC. There is nothing that unique about NYC relative to other cities to suggest it won't work.
2) "It's just a cash grab." I love this one. Firstly, this implies that congestion pricing will not lower vehicle travel. Firstly, London, Singapore, Milan, and Stockholm all saw 20-30% reductions in traffic. Back to the first argument - what makes NYC so special that this wouldn't apply?
Unless you've taken the time to dive into their 909 page environmental report to see the kind of intensive modeling they've undertaken, then you're talking out of your ass. The review board estimates that 150k less cars will enter the Central Business District (CBD) every day, amounting to a projected 17% reduction in traffic below 60th street. Unless you have some solid methodological argument as to how the modeling overlooked some key aspect they missed in the decade of studying this, then kindly, you have no clue what you're talking about. It's also positioned to improve air quality, increase use of public transit by 1-2%, improve emergency response times, and a host of other benefits.
The other thing I'd like to point out to it being a cash grab is, "So what if it is?" The MTA is required to raise $1 billion per year from this plan, all of which is required to be used for public transit improvements. Let's say in this hypothetical there is 0 reduction in congestion, and the only thing that happens is that the MTA collects $1 billion a year to improve public transit based on monetizing what people are already doing. They're currently polluting the air, hitting pedestrians and cyclists (such that about 10 people die in the district every year), increasing noise pollution for residents, slowing emergency response times, impeding deliveries for local businesses, and a host of other issues. The least we could do is make them pay for these externalities that we all suffer from to rectify the inequity.
3) "But the MTA is corrupt. Where is all that money actually going?" Yeah, probably. But this is a strawman (and I'd encourage you to find a city or state agency that isn't rife with some form of corruption). Once again, we can flip my prior argument around: let's say that in a hypothetical, $0 of money goes to improving public transit or anything meaningful, but we get a 17% reduction in congestion - that is a win for all the reasons I listed above.
But of course, people also love to overlook the fact that it's not actually $1B, it's $1B that can help secure $15b in bond financing, which the MTA has already laid out a robust plan to show where all of that money is going to go - namely, substantial capital project improvements and long overdue maintenance. Not to mention, I don't hear these same people demanding to see where the money from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, or Triboro Bridge go to. How is this any different? In a time where fare evasion has increased dramatically post COVID, losing the MTA $700m a year - nearly half of all MTA bus riders on local buses skipped the fare in Q4 2023 - it is more important than ever to ensure we have sustainable income to support our crumbling infrastructure. And no, you absolute buffoon, you do not have a right to skip the fare because the service sucks, any more than you have the right to not pay for a sandwich you ate in its entirety because you decided after the fact you didn't like it.
4) "But the majority of car traffic in the CBD is Ubers and Lyfts, why should everyone else be punished?" Let's get a few things straight. In 2018, about 35% of all vehicles in the CBD were personal automobiles and motorcycles. That is compared to 52% that are for hire vehicles and taxis, so yes, there are more taxis/Ubers/Lyfts than personal vehicles, but personal vehicles make up a substantial portion.
Comparing people whose car is used for work vs. a vehicle that gets you to work is disingenuous. Firstly, people who drive to work overwhelmingly don't have to drive to work - they have other options. For the taxi drivers, that is their income. Secondly, let's talk about congestion.
The vast majority of personal automobiles in the CBD have 1 person inside of them. That person will drive in, presumably park on the street or in a garage, go about their day to work, and then drive home. 1 person utilized that vehicle over the course of an entire work day, and for about 90% of that work day, the car sat on the street or in a garage, taking up space and doing absolutely nothing. This is the pinnacle of inefficient transportation usage.
A taxi, meanwhile, never parks. It can pick up dozens and dozens of passengers every single day, making for a much more efficient use of space, fuel, and time. We should be encouraging efficient trips to reduce congestion and not encouraging one-person, personal automobile use to get to the best connected transit area on the continent. And we are - the price during the day for personal automobiles is $15, whereas riders will pay a surcharge of $1.25 in taxis and $2.50 in for-hire vehicles.
5) "Okay, but what about the people that need to drive to Manhattan?" Almost nobody "needs" to drive to Manhattan's CBD, but I'll humor it. First of all, nobody lives in a transit desert in NYC. All areas of NYC except Breezy Point live within a half mile of some kind of public transit service. Let's focus on those that don't: approximately 440k people. Of those 440k, about 34k (7.7%) commute to the CBD. And of those 34k, 5,200 people commute to the CBD by car. And I can hear you trolls seething now: "But living within a half mile of a transit stop doesn't mean the transit is good!!" And you know what can make it good? More investment in the service by raising capital money through tolls on people that can afford it.
6) "But how is that fair to the people in Long Island, upstate, or New Jersey?!" I want to make one thing very clear here: the needs of people that live in the city should ALWAYS come above those who simply commute in and leave at the end of the day. Commerce and jobs are of course important, but nothing is more important than the livelihood of residents that live in the area. And those residents suffer from all the externalities I mentioned before as a result of it, and this is attempting to restore equity. People who live in the suburbs choose to do so, and of course, that's their right to. But because you made the decision to live in a bigger house in a quieter neighborhood well outside of the city, does not mean you get to have your cake and eat it too. You can pay for the convenience and externalities you bring to the residents of the city as a function of your choosing not to live there. Also like... New Jersey is New Jersey. Their state dollars benefit their residents, not us. This is a New York program for New York residents that stands to benefit New York City residents.
Let's talk about New Jersey for a second. It is a complete myth that New Jersey residents need to drive to Manhattan. In the 21 legislative districts closest to Manhattan, just 1.6% of commuters commute to Manhattan by car. Of those 1.6%, the median income is approximately $108k. In other words, they can afford the $15 toll if they choose to not use the many public transit options available to them.
I might add that you are only charged the toll by entering the CBD - if you are someone in New Jersey trying to get to Long Island, provided you stay only on highways and don't enter local streets, you will not pay the congestion pricing charge.
7) "But what about disadvantaged New Yorkers? How are they supposed to afford this?" Thankfully, the subway fare is $2.90, and the Fair Fares program allows that to be cut in half if you qualify. But if you insist on driving into Manhattan as a low income resident, there is the Low-Income Discount Plan (LIPD) which results in a 50% discount on congestion pricing tolls after the first 10 trips in a calendar month, but requires your federal adjusted gross income in the prior year to be less than $50k.
For individuals with disabilities, you have the Individual Disability Exemption Plan (IDEP). To be eligible you must have a qualifying disability that prevents you from using public transit - which surprise surprise, is very, very few people.
Emergency vehicles, buses, and specialized government owned vehicles are also exempted.
8) "Okay, but what about my 130-year old grandmother who lost 3 legs and absolutely must drive to go to the hospital in the CBD?" In all seriousness, public transit exists, but some individuals are too ill or unable to take transit. Many of those individuals are also too ill or unable to drive.
For the few that remain, there are countless city services that can help them. Medicaid and Medicare enrollees cover low-income people and those with developmental disabilities, as well as veterans and some aged 60+ and offer free or discounted transportation to medical appointments. Access-A-Ride provides public transit for eligible customers with disabilities or health conditions that otherwise prevent them from using public buses or trains for some or all of their trip. If you have a Flexible Spending Account, Health Savings Account, or Health Reimbursement Arrangement, transportation costs to and from medical appointments are often reimbursable.
9) "And what about our public servants? They do such important work, why should they have to pay?" They don't! They can take transit and pay the measly fare of just $2.90.
The work they do is incredibly important, which is why we should be investing in our public transit system and improving its reliability to they can get to work easily, on time, and safely, which is exactly what congestion pricing is set to do. But if it's so important they get exempted, then why not exempt them on all bridges, highways, and other tolls? Or all parking fees? Why does the congestion pricing toll represent something so unique that must be exempted?
Fun fact while we're here: the majority of public servants already take transit to work. Census Tract 29 in Manhattan near Canal Street has the highest proportion of commuters getting there by car than any other Census Tract in the CBD. 6,832 workers, over 40% of commuters to that Census Tract, drive to work there, despite it being one of the richest areas for public transit in the entire city. Why is this you might ask? Well, because of all the law enforcement and government buildings: One Police Plaza, Manhattan Criminal Court, New York Supreme Court, New York County Supreme Court, City Hall, etc. In other words? The vast majority of people driving to work are police or other city officials abusing placards to have free parking on Park Row. And surely, you as someone that hates congestion pricing, are incredibly concerned with public corruption, right? (See point 3).
10) "But all this is going to do is push car traffic toward other, less advantaged communities." Firstly, I'm a believer that we should let experts do what they do best and while we should always apply skepticism, we should ultimately trust those who have dedicated their entire careers to study a particular domain area. And one of those domain areas that you and I don't know shit about is traffic modeling, and the MTA published a 900-page document detailing every little bit of considerations regarding traffic flow through robust models. I'm not going to pretend to understand every detail of how or why it works, but clearly, neither do you, and so I think we should let the experts handle this one.
So far, the anticipated effects on other neighborhoods and parts of the city are expected to be small, as people will take to other forms of commuting, like public transit, or driving at different hours than they usually do, etc. The toll credits on bridges and highways will reduce "toll shopping" which will ultimately mean many of those will not elongate their commute to look for cheaper options, and those that choose to drive will overwhelmingly end up just paying the toll.
Perhaps the area most anticipated to be affected is the Cross Bronx expressway, of which there are expected to be about 700 more trucks there than before. It might increase soot from truck traffic 5%, and overall soot by 1%. The MTA is trying to rectify this by spending $25m on an asthma treatment in the Bronx, as well as other initiatives like planting vegetation near roads and renovating parks and green spaces.
To be very clear these are real impacts to people that already suffer some of the worst consequences of congestion. We are trying to do the right thing for the most amount of people, and while Manhattan's CBD congestion pricing will carry a lot of benefits for everyone, and the overall effects on the Bronx are expected to be small, they are not negligible, and require their own attention to figure out. Ultimately, this all comes down to the very thing that we are trying to advocate for - less car reliance, less pollution, less lives lost due to unnecessary driving and unhealthy transit habits. This is step 1 in trying to address these long-term, very serious inequities and is the tip of the iceberg in turning all of NYC into a more livable city for all residents.
TL;DR: Congestion pricing good, trolls bad.
