2024.05.12 02:16 Therealcloud777 Top 5 greaser movies
- The Outsider was one of the greatest movies and my top favorite the movie was great in many ways showing stuff from the book (at least in the complete novel version) and when the movie was done They made another book that S.E Hinton explained that she enjoyed the movie and the actors that made it showing appreciation.
(Honorable mention La Bamba I know this movie doesn't fall into the greaser movies but at this time I did consider it since it took place in the 50s and Bob was a greaser with the leather jacket and so was Ritchie with their styles of clothing and this movie was real and I think I deserves to be in here and R.I.P, Ritchie we will miss you )
- The Lords of Flatbush This is one of the greaser movies that shows you can either keep up being a greaser or not it shows that sometimes you need to grow up and make the right choices in life.
- The Wild One was the first-ever greaser movie that influenced motorcycles and leather jackets not only that it makes the whole style popular but the movie is a classic among others I like but I I like The Outsiders more.
4 . Grease was great I like some of the soundtracks like Grease is the Word and Greased Lighting but this movie was great I just liked The Lords of Flatbush the Wild One and The Outsiders more.
5 Rebel without a Cause was one of the classics from back then it was great and was able to influence more people about greasers like the Wild one
And guys this list was only my opinion on what movie I liked and even though La Bamba was actually in real life and it focuses more on the topic of Richie Valens I still saw it as a greaser movie for the things the styles of clothes and the fact that it went into one of the greaser movies if you see it

2024.05.07 03:43 Libertaliar Dion 'n' Little Kings - King of the New York Streets (featuring Scott from Dictators / Del-Lords)
Dion 'n' Little Kings - King of the New York Streets As a kid I liked Dion better than most of the other late 50's / early 60's artists -- the grit in his voice made him stand out to me. But he's an interesting guy too -- was into Italian gangs in NYC as a kid, addicted to heroin, almost got on the plane that crashed and killed Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. He sobered up and in the 90s played in a short-lived band that covered the Dictators "Stay With Me". But this is my favorite song on their live album, the best rendition I've heard of Dion's "King of the New York Streets". Its more blues-y but it's got Ain't It Fun vibes, or almost Social Distortion-esque (they used to cover The Wanderer as well)

2024.05.06 20:12 CrazySamoan310 Some of the undermentioned Chicano films that are worthy of mention! Granted some of the acting is corny in them but they are gems!
| - Boulevard Nights, imo this is the most underrated Chicano/Chicana film. Came out in 1979 & still holds up.
- Harsh Times, directed by David Ayer; same guy that directed End of Watch, Street Kings & wrote the screenplay for Training Day.
- Duke of Earl
- Road Dogz
- La Bamba, based on legend Ritchie Valens RIP. Ironic dude who is playing him as actually Filipino
- Kilroy, based on Ernest "Kilroy" Roybal, OG from White Fence & one of Mexican Mafias earliest members.
- Splinter
- Cheech & Chong; Up in Smoke

2024.05.06 19:44 KennediIman Everytime I see Constance Marie I immediately thinks of time on Selena
| Constance is one of the best Latina actresses there is in the industry. I loooooovvvveeeee her; me some Angie Lopez. George Lopez is one of my fave shows. I saw her for the first time as Marcela in 2011 while watching the movie for the first time ever in my life. But I recently I saw a TikTok of her screen test as Selena. She definitely doesn’t cut it as Selena but it was interesting to see try. I think Selena would’ve been pleased. But also, everytime I was GL (like now) I think of Selena and if she would’ve appeared on the show. Guest appearances of people on that show are connected to Selena. Constance and Lou D. Phillips (he played Ritchie Valens whose song, La Bamba, Selena covered.) Constance played Marcela well, so I cackle at the thought of her doing Selena. She was a bit too giddy. 🫶🏼🤣😄😁 submitted by KennediIman to SelenaQuintanilla [link] [comments] |

2024.05.01 01:55 Moni3 Selena Quintanilla -- A discussion
It's impossible to overstate Selena's popularity in Texas and Mexico. Sis sold out the Astrodome. Thrice!
Selena was American, English was her first language. She had to learn Spanish to communicate with fans and journalists. She's had two biopics about her. Jennifer Lopez played her in 1997, and a Netflix miniseries came out a couple years ago. I've seen them both. My wife is a huge Selena fan, and tbh Selena gets my respect because she's immensely talented.
She had moderate success in the U.S. on English/non-Spanish charts. Her first album was released in 1984.
She would not be the first in the RRHOF to record in another language. Ritchie Valens, Brenda Lee, Roy Orbison, Santana, ABBA, and Kraftwerk recorded in other languages, including Spanish. Maybe more, idk.
Her most influential song in Spanish:
Como La Flor Also, check out
Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, performed live at the Astrodome. It was pretty popular too.
Her last hit, in English:
I Could Fall In Love She covered the Pretenders with the melody if not lyrics of Back on the Chain Gang:
Fotos y Recuerdos And she recorded a beautifully stylized duet with David Byrne of Talking Heads:
God's Child (Baila Conmigo) Does she belong? Why or why not?
P.S. for the cynics: you want the museum to get an attendance boost? Selena, holy shit.

2024.04.27 22:47 Upper_Rope8309 What would you assume about me after looking at me Playlist?
2024.04.27 20:55 Not_A_Lizhard What is your favorite new album of 2024? (So far)
2024.04.21 00:00 InnocentTailor What song from the Fallout show did you like? What song would you like to hear in Season 2?
With Fallout Season 1 finished, it was clear that the show, much like the games, incorporated amazing pieces. They were either from the 1950s or very much inspired by the decade.
So what was your favorite piece and what would you like to hear in Season 2, even if it was used already in the franchise?
My favorite piece from Season 1 was Johnny Cash’s So Doggone Loneseome. It fit the relatively gritty introduction to the Brotherhood of Steel as they moved around and lived in the dusty barracks. That and Cash himself is quintessential Americana as a musician.
A piece I would like to hear is Ritchie Valens’s La Bamba. Not only was it from the decade (it was released in 1958), but also Valens himself was from California. In other words, it fits the setting of the show – the western part of the former United States.

2024.04.10 10:29 CP4-Throwaway A rough estimate of celebs that may seem more S, Cusp, or BB from Famous Birthdays, for celebrities b. from roughly circa 1939-1948; a.k.a. the Activist microgeneration (give or take)
Just for context, in this specific post:
S = Silent Gen
Cusp = Cusp
BB = Baby Boomer
Since I did one for the other generational divides, I might as well also do one for the Silent/Boomer divide.
I will exclude the 1946-1948 list because that'd be way too long. I'll add them in the comment sections. So in this post, I'll focus on the celebrities born from 1939-1945, a.k.a. "War Babies" (give or take 1939).
I know the vast majority of this sub will disagree but I'll post it anyway.
This is based on the vibes and/or appearance of the celebrity so please don't take this too seriously as this may or may not be accurate, depending on one's view of Silents and Boomers. This is based on my current perception of these celebrities.
WARNING: THIS POST WILL BE SUPER LONG!!! DISCRETION ADVISED!!!!!!

2024.04.10 09:00 thekingofallfrogs Every 'X' killed my career that I could think of
Wanted to make this masterpost(?) out of the blue since these career-ending moments/figures are all of what I could come up with. I just thought it'd be nice for me to have my own personal time to infodump here.
- Haydn killed my career - While the Baroque era is said to have ended with Bach's death, its style was still pretty prevalent in the mid-18th century with Scarlatti, Telemann, CPE Bach, Boccherini, Gluck, and the like even if it was just called 'galant' or 'roccoco' now instead of baroque, but then Haydn enters the picture and his whimsical style of preferring simple light melodies over complex and dramatic pieces made the former composers irrelevant and Haydn's style was popular and imitated for the remainder of the century (hi Mozart).
- Beethoven killed my career - The Classical era was short-lived compared to the other two big eras of classical music and Beethoven was entirely responsible for that. He kickstarted the Romantic era mainly with his symphonies. His 9th symphony destroyed every other Classical era composer's career in the blink of an eye (except for Schubert).
- Schoenberg/John Cage/Ligeti/Penderecki killed my career - Avant-garde music became the defining aspect of 20th-century classical music, yet for most people, it is confusing or outright unlistenable. Classical music used to be one of the most popular genres of music in the 19th century and the early 20th century, but the anti-art/anti-tradition aspects and shrill nature of 20th-century classical music which prolonged for the rest of the century made the genre commercially unappealing outside of film scores emulating past composers. This also led to classical music before the 20th century being associated with either a) old people b) rich people/imperialists and c) literal babies; essentially avant-garde music was Metal Machine Music but a thousand times more damaging. There's a reason why people and classical stations think classical music ended with Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Bartok, Prokofiev, Copland, and Khachaturian.
- Elvis killed my career - Once rock and roll became popular with white audiences thanks to Elvis Presley, the 'traditional pop' scene and pop jazz swiftly began to decline. Bing Crosby, the single most successful American pop artist at the time saw his career get killed off almost immediately as seen from his chart history; the same thing happened to Perry Como. Other pop artists like Nat King Cole or Tony Bennett gradually saw a decline in commercial success but were not killed outright.
- Miles Davis killed my career - Miles Davis was basically responsible for making jazz closer to art music and is seen by many as the greatest jazz musician of the 20th century. With the death of Bing Crosby's career and the gradual decline of 'traditional pop' and pop jazz thanks to rock and roll, his career served as both the killing blows to pop-jazz and big band groups, and ushering a renaissance for jazz music effectively making it "America's Classical Music". Jazz was no longer commercially viable to the mainstream consumer of popular music, but jazz as a genre has thrived even up to the 21st century.
- The Day the Music Died killed my career - The death of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper was probably the most infamous moment for rock and roll at that time. People thought that the deaths of the rockers would mean that the fad of rock and roll would pass as the years following would see rock and roll gradually decline in quality and popularity as people had no idea what to do with it which led to the awkward and stale sound of early 60s pop/rock music. This of course lasted until a certain group from Liverpool revitalized the genre to new heights.
- The Beatles killed my career - The Beatles and the British Invasion killed the careers of the teen heartthrobs Sedaka and Anka until their comeback in the 70s, surf rock, almost all of the last remaining grips of the traditional pop group (Andy Williams and Sinatra were probably the only ones unaffected).
- MTV killed my career - MTV as a whole changed popular music forever and with that came the deaths of genres and careers. Country, for a while, died as a mainstream genre until the mid-90s with the pop crossover phase and this was the final blow to disco. Then of course there were the rock and pop acts who failed to crossover successfully to MTV; think KISS, Santana, Captain and Tennille, Barry Manilow, Styx, Doobie Brothers, and Anne Murray. And since MTV was racially segregated in its early years, only allowing white artists in until it got called out for that, 70s black artists like Bill Withers, the O'Jays, Earth Wind and Fire, Rick James, and Chic struggled or outright failed to have top 40 hits post-MTV even if they did well on BET or black radio.
- Dr. Dre killed my career - This one was more gradual as gangsta rap started in 1987 thanks to Ice-T. Dr. Dre was essentially the codifier of the gangsta rap genre with his work on NWA, and while their albums were okay in sales, they were heavily outsold by pop-rap and dance music that utilized and appropriated rap music, especially Eurodance. It wasn't until the commercial success of The Chronic where the moment that hardcore and more serious hip-hop became the center and face of rap music, causing the tables to turn against dancey pop-rap and Eurodance rap. By the time 2Pac released Me Against the World in 1995, that sound was seen as a joke.
- R.E.M. killed my career - While R.E.M. was a popular alternative rock band in the late 80s they didn't kill anyone's careers or set any new trends, 1991's Out of Time and its lead single "Losing My Religion" changed the adult contemporary genre forever and led to the popularization of the adult alternative radio format. This was also more gradual because at the beginning of the 90s you had music that featured soft electric pianos, powerful vocals, saxophones, and key changes (Michael Bolton, Rod Stewart, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Bryan Adams) but gradually following that you began to see more songs using quieter vocals, acoustic instruments and no key changes and this style would persist well into the new millennium (Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, Hootie and the Blowfish, Coldplay, John Mayer).
- Nirvana killed my career - No explanation needed.
- 9/11 killed my career - 9/11 killed off more hardcore rock/metal groups and was one of the factors that led to the decline of nu-metal, but it also killed off the careers of female country pop artists as Todd brought up in his TW video for Faith Hill. While rock was already declining thanks to the division between alternative and metal folks and facing the gradual fate of commercial jazz, this combination led to hardcore rock and metal acts like RATM and Slipknot disappearing from the mainstream and newer artists like Ghost becoming cult acts.
- Eminem killed my career - Eminem killed the teen pop era of 1997-2003 midway through because kids, especially teenage boys, were alienated by the saturation of teen-pop acts and Eminem served as the cultural antithesis of that genre. After Eminem's career took off, more edgy acts like Avril Lavigne, Pain at the Disco!, Fall Out Boy, and My Chemical Romance appeared to take the place of the teen-pop princesses and boy bands, while some of the initial targets who survived Eminem's wrath (specifically Britney and Justin) became edgier as well. And of course, he also killed the bubblegum pop-rap resurgence led by Will Smith almost instantly via that diss.
- Kings of Leon killed my career - This is an odd one since most people outside of alternative music circles see them as a two-hit wonder but this new sound they brought with their hit singles "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody" basically killed hard rock and led to, as Todd put it, "alternative becoming mainstream rock".
- Lana del Ray/Lorde killed my career - At the beginning of the 2010s, alternative pop was not really seen as its own thing aside from alternative rock/adult alternative crossing over to mainstream audiences. That changed once an up-and-coming artist named Lana del Ray began making waves on the indie scene for her sad-sounding melodic style, eventually culminating in the release of her mainstream debut album Born to Die. Lana wasn't immediately popular, in fact, she was initially divisive, but Born to Die's prolonged commercial success led to imitators like Lorde popping up. Lorde's success as a top 40 two-hit wonder (to the general public, not music heads) and a critical darling created the "gloomy pop" trend of the 2010s-20s. Ultimately Lorde's success created the careers of Halsey and Billie Eilish and killed the careers of Katy Perry and Kelly Clarkson.
- Kendrick/Migos killed my career - This one's another two-for-one, both resulting in the death of crunk and post-crunk hip-hop once and for all. Kendrick's album good kid, m.A.A.d city made alternative hip-hop mainstream and effectively made other alternative rap artists like Tyler, the Creator and Childish Gambino household names. Migos redefined trap, which was initially a sister genre of crunk in the 2000s thanks to T.I., by changing the sound and making trap its own distinctive subgenre and the biggest subgenre of hip-hop in the present day.
- COVID killed my career - The COVID-19 pandemic killed the EDM craze of the 2010s and you no longer see dance-pop hits in that vein, with younger Zoomers and now Gen Alpha preferring pop songs by singer-songwriters or gloomy pop, the DJs who were criticized for "pressing buttons" are basically irrelevant now. I also feel as if the shutdown of the Dance Club Songs Chart also put a huge blow to EDM even if there is another chart for that genre. COVID-19 also marked the end of an era for several big names in music as their careers would not recover in the next decade (Charlie Puth, Shawn Mendes, Camilla Cabello, Khalid, etc).
