2024.06.02 08:49 catssandwhatnot What are the parental kidnapping laws in Ohio regarding domestic abuse victims who are fleeing their spouse?

A friend of mine shares two girls, 10 & 15, with her husband, who has become dangerously volatile the past year. She is a stay at home mom who has no access to any money anymore. When she has expressed a desire to leave, he removes her from shared bank accounts, cancels her credit cards, hide the keys, hides her life saving medications from her, and threatens to call the police on her if she takes the children. She ultimately left and has been staying at a hotel with her girls for the past two nights. He has demanded she bring them back by 8 AM tomorrow or he is filing kidnapping charges against her, but her children are scared and don’t want to go home. Her kids were actually the ones who begged her to go, so much so that her 10 year old took it upon herself to keep an eye on her father so that she could see where he hid the medication so that they all could finally leave. He has been having violent blowups in front of them for a while now and all three of them are scared for their safety and for the safety of the animals they left in his care. All that said, I know that not all states have an exemption for domestic violence survivors that are fleeing a volatile situation, but she is afraid that she could get in legal trouble since he is claiming parental alienation even though the children do not want to see him again. What are her rights in Ohio? She wants to get her animals out of the house but he won’t let her have them and she has run out of money.

2024.06.02 08:41 K1ngTutt28 Credit Card Strategies - Current Navy Fed Card Holder

Hi everyone!
I am new to the credit card points and miles game and would love to get some advice and guidance.
For a long time, I've only had one card (which I still have), the Navy Federal Credit Union Flagship Rewards card. I love the card, and Navy Fed has always been wonderful to work with. However, I recently decided to get an additional card as a backup. This led me to YouTube, where I discovered many videos about miles, points, and sign-up bonuses.
I recently got the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card because I often stay at Marriotts and wanted a hotel credit card. I appreciate the status it gives, the $300 dining credit, and the free night credit each year up to 80k points. This has me thinking about more strategies and cards in the future.
Here are the cards I have so far:
  1. Navy Federal Flagship Rewards:
    • 3x on travel
    • 2x on everything else
  2. Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant:
    • 6x on Marriott stays
    • 3x on dining and flights booked directly with airlines
    • 2x on everything else
    • Also note that I earned my signup bonus of 185k marriott bonvoy points which im stoked about!
I'm not sure if it's good or bad to have two travel cards. I've seen YouTube videos suggesting it can be beneficial. I was considering the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card and the Capital One Venture X. My local airport has a lounge accessible with the Venture X, but I’m unsure if I'll use it often, as I think I'll primarily use my Navy Fed card for travel. The Chase Sapphire Preferred caught my eye due to its lower annual fee and 3x on streaming and dining services.
Here’s some additional context:
Other cards I was considering:
What would you all suggest in my current scenario? Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

2024.06.02 08:39 Old_Soft8108 Credit cards and High interest savings accounts.

Could someone explain to me if this is a good idea or bad idea. You have a credit card with 0% interest APR 0% balance transfer Fee for 15 months. You have a high yield savings account which gives 5% interest rate. Your credit card caps out at 10k you use 8k to put in the savings account and don't touch it. Make the minimum monthly payments. Once the credit card needs to be paid off in full at 15 months pay it off. Pocket the interest. Won't make you a millionaire but it will make profit or am I wrong?

2024.06.02 08:32 meatfloaf 2 stupid questions

Hi. I am new to this journey of financial literacy thanks to Hammer boy.
  1. I paid off my one and only credit card 2 months ago but it is still showing as 68% usage. How do I fix this? Could you explain as I am an idiot. (I would just go to the bank but moved out of the country and Chase doesn't exist here)
  2. My parents took out 5 loans in my name for student loans. I don't have access to pay them but I see them on my bank account. It's absurd. Most are less than 20$ for minimum payment and they've been here for over 6 years. Does this affect my credit or just theirs ? I keep asking to get access to account so I can pay them off but they won't give me access. What are my options?
Okay thank you very much :)

2024.06.02 08:31 Baesazhe Credit Card Question From A Student

For the past year I have had the RBC Ion+ Visa. I don't have any monthly payment (as I am a student the $4 per month gets waived) and I receive the equivalent of $2 cashback for every $100 I spend (2%) on majority of my expenses (gas and groceries). Since I would pay for a lot of grocery and items (for my roommates and get paid back into my chequing) that would (if I paid for them using the credit card) set me over the limit (I would use my debit for everything after 80% utilization) I decided to open a new card with a different bank that offers 7x the limit and 1% cashback.
I just thought about it (im not sure why I didn't realize in the moment) and I am thinking that it would have been smarter to pay everything after 30% utilization on the rbc one off immediately reaping the benefits 2% cashback and not going over the limit?
Would it be smarter to close the second card and then only use the rbc card paying everything past 30% utilization off immediately? How bad was the decision to open a second card? Will closing the second card affect my score or anything negatively in any way? Thanks!

2024.06.02 08:16 a24s91 Credit card recs/ upgrade to platinum?

Current credit cards you are the primary account holder of: (list cards, limits, opening date): Amex gold card, 2022. United explore card 2017 * FICO Scores with source: Experian 805 * Oldest credit card account age with you as primary name on the account: 8 years old * Number of personal credit cards approved for in the past 6 months: 0 * Number of personal credit cards approved for in the past 12 months: 0 * Number of personal credit cards approved for in the past 24 months: 0 * Annual income $: 220k CATEGORIES
I have been using the Amex gold because we eat out a lot and get groceries but we are moving to the east coast and plan to fly out of Boston every few months with my family (3-4 tickets each time). Will fly between la and Boston at least 2-3x a year and trying to see if I should upgrade to platinum or another travel card. I am hesitant because we take advantage of the dining and groceries benefits on the gold card currently.
Thank you!

2024.06.02 08:16 scouthc I can't figure out this CigarPage Scam?

I have a very unique name - if it is googled I'm the only person that comes up. This goes for my current last name and my maiden name.
Last week I got an email from CigarPage that an account was created with my Gmail account that is my first name and maiden name @gmail.com. I thought it was spam so I just moved it to spam and didn't click any links.
Today I got a shipping confirmation for an order from the website. Again I clicked on no links etc. however it did have a USPS tracking number. I looked it up by going directly to the USPS website. It is legit. It is shipping to Houston, TX. I don't live there.
So I sleuth a little and CigarPage does seem like a real website. So I did the password reset option to log into this account that was made under my email. There is a credit card saved to the account. It isn't mine. My credit has been locked at all three credit places for two years. Just to be safe I ran a credit report and the only two credit cards in my name are in fact my cards.
When I look at the order, the billing address entered is my first name and current last name and my phone number, however it the address is in Nashville. I've never lived in Nashville although it is probably a coincidence, I was there about three weeks ago for work for 2 days. However, I only every used my corporate card. My corporate card is not the card on the CigarPage account used for this purpose.
The shipping address was again my first and current last name and my phone number but an address in Houston, TX. Again a place I've never been. When I look up the shipping address in Google it isn't anyone I know.
I'm trying to figure out what the scam is here? It isn't a credit card in my name being used for this purpose. I don't know what to protect myself from since I don't understand this scam.

2024.06.02 08:08 Karmabeliever03 Chase credit limit transfer

I have chase freedom unlimited with limit of $6000. I’m looking to open a Hyatt credit card and united airlines card from chase just to transfer my credit from both the cards to freedom unlimited. I still have 6 months left for 0% APR with freedom unlimited. My question is 1. Is it possible to transfer the credit limits ? 2. How long do I have to wait after opening the new cards. 3. Will it impact my credit score while opening the cards and transferring the credit limits? 4. Is it a good time to do this ? As I have only 6 months of 0% APR offer left.

2024.06.02 08:07 FAOLAN131313 Best way to tackle my debt?

So I have $21k in credit card debt, only $2k no intrest the rest 22%-26%, except one 29% almost paid. $17k in a private student loan 5% interest and then ~$20k federal loans that have a $0 payment in the SAVE plan currently and going to attempt PSLF so I'm mostly focusing on the how to take credit cards. Probably going to have too much info but want it to be comprehensive to show why I feel so very stuck.
Already budgetting and don't have a lot of extra to takle them, keep getting told to stop paying the private loan but it is cosigned and I am not ruining their credit, but it is $430 a month due to a 5 year loan term. Also that bankruptcy may be the best solution but it messes up your credit for so long and I will need to move soon so I like the idea in theory but ramifications seem too high... but without it I feel like I'll be stuck forever.
Looked into consolidation loans with no offer lower than 28% so that's a nope. Can't get another balance transfer card either. Can't work more hours due to multiple disabilities and honesty struggling with this full time job I recently got, but am going to have to keep it to survive all this (and since part timers get no benefits). Also for those who look into my history I know I should, but I will not get rid of my dog. He is keeping me sane and alive even if he needs lifelong treatment and I am also afraid if I rehomed him the next people would not pay for his treatment which would end his life so prematurely.

2024.06.02 08:05 Bbygrlthcc AITA for not responding to my exes “assistance alert” after he had previously said to abort our unborn child

To preface this I 26 f have been broken up with my ex boyfriend 30m for almost 3 years… our relationship started to fail when I was unable to take out as many credit card loans or make an income due to health reasons. When we moved into a newer quote on quote more upscale apartment complex I found out I was pregnant and was ecstatic because I was told I was more than likely infertile. When I told him, his first response was to make an appointment at the abortion clinic or he would leave. (Do not get me wrong I am pro choice until the day I die but this was my choice, to keep the baby). It was around Christmas time so no clinics were open (in my small town) and by the time I would be able to get an appointment I would be farther than 10weeks along…well the 11th week hit and we still hadn’t told anyone but I hadn’t slept the night before I, I felt something was wrong. When I finally got out of bed I immediately knew I was miscarrying (I had been working on labor and delivery for 3 years at that point). I told him immediately but heard nothing from him all day. When I got home he immediately changed into some “going out “ clothes and told me he was going to go out and celebrate him not having to have a baby with me anymore. Long story short 3 years later I meet the love of my life and were happily engaged planning on a summer 2025 wedding. Last week I got an emergency alert text that said my ex needed assistance through his smart watch (I bought for him). I knew this was a kind of serious one because it gave me the exact latitude and longitude of his last know whereabouts. I ignored it. And tbh I hope he’s dead in the mountains somewhere because of what he put me through. So AITA?

2024.06.02 08:04 Odd-Cryptographer5 Credit Card recommendations for Mac purchase

Hello, So I need to buy a MacBook and have the means to pay it in full, but I thought this could be a good opportunity to build up some credit since I only have one credit card and my student loans.
My first option was to get the Best Buy credit card since they offer 0% interest for 12 months (would likely pay it off in 6mo). I could also put it on my credit card but since my limit is 2k I would be using over 30%. After reading some other posts some suggested to just open a credit card and this would make sense since I’m not planning on really purchasing much else at Best Buy. I have a credit score of 787, oldest account being 5yrs n 9mo, and I’ve never had a late payment.
I’m wondering if there is a credit card that will offer 0% apr for at least 6 months, will do some sort of earn back offer (I’m not sure if that’s what it’s called, but when you spend a certain amount within a certain amount of time of opening it and they give you back like $100-300), and would also like to find something that has better cash back rewards. I currently have the Wells Fargo Active Cash that offers 2% cash back. I would likely use the credit card for dining and outings since I have all my subscriptions on the WF card, but am open to hearing any other suggestions, I’ve just heard that some cards give higher cash back on certain purchases. I have been thinking of getting a travel credit card to start earning points bc I want to start making travel more of a priority (in a smarter way), but I’m really not sure what the best option would be.
I believe the offer on the laptop ends 6/2 so is this even possible to do within a day? Also will it be fine if I just spend that initial amount that is needed for the earn back reward and don’t make any other purchases until that is paid off? (Within the 0% period ofc) Will I need to open a bank account in order to apply for the credit card?
I’m obviously not very knowledgeable so please excuse anything that doesn’t make sense/ wouldn’t be possible.
I think that’s all I can think of.. greatly appreciate any input!!!

2024.06.02 08:01 estorco What to do with MR points?

I am thinking of cancelling my amex gold since it is just sideline for the better half of the year. I've been using other credit cards for my day to day purchase and my last transaction on amex gold was on December of 2023. I don't plan on travelling the next year or so and even then, I use other credit card currencies to transfer out to partners I am actually interested in. Any suggestions would help!
Edit: Reason why I am not travelling in the next year or two is because I'm chasing a promotion. Also most of my family is in the city I live in or a few cities away from me

2024.06.02 07:59 VileDot Before and the perpetual after

About two years ago a friend came into my apartment and saw me passed out next to what I dubbed "beer mountain", which had been growing for months. My embarrassment and shame was somehow way more powerful than the headache I had. Another month or so of drinking passed until I was quite literally out of money with a credit card locked for nonpayment. Day 1. Since then, I've been through withdrawals, a breakup, loss of my best friend, dropping out of college, 6 months of unemployment, a motorcycle accident and subsequent surgery, and a brief dance with homelessness, all while battling depression, anxiety, and not having two pennies to rub together. Thank whatever deity that be for the VA. I started CBT with a good therapist and had a major MH breakthrough. Now, I have stepped forward to claim my own identity. I live with good people who care about me. I'm enrolled in school again. I'm about to collect more money than I've ever owned from my accident, reducing my debt to zero. I am getting fit again and plan to train for a marathon. I am stuffing food into my face all the time and gaining back the weight I lost in pure muscle. I am no longer intimidated by the opposite sex and I can't wait to start dating as myself. I quit smoking weed two weeks ago and I'm on my last pod of vape juice ever. My moral compass is a juggernaut of philanthropy. My words, my thoughts, and my actions are all aligning.
