2024.05.22 02:10 OreoJehi So how are we feeling Kaeya mains? I think we all know it never been was a coincidence at this point. [+and an UNRELATED THEORY post]

So how are we feeling Kaeya mains? I think we all know it never been was a coincidence at this point. [+and an UNRELATED THEORY post]
For newcomers who doesnt know what I'm talking about: Here's two posts for context.
Im going to be honest. Im feeling dreading sick for Kaeya rn (pls help 🥹). I opened this app cuz I wanted to giddily share a nothing-post, a theory that you probably had read it before but I haven't thought of it and it was making me too giddily-excited that I wanted to share. Only to see this post.
I couldn't help it but express my dreading feelings here, so pls let me piggyback this post to also share my theory thoughts. But really, Im feeling it really bad rn, the chills, the dread. It has never stopped and it gets worse over time, starting from the beginning, ngl it feels super unlucky to be a Kaeyamain. Anyone here feels similarly if not the same? (And fyi, it's not affecting me in real life scale, I know how to separate irl and fiction so please, just dont; you could say it's another form of entertainment?).
If you're not up for a theory you can freely skip it and talk about deathflags! Anw, I'll start abt that theory right now with this:
Kaeya: Oh, you can't tell? My family's lived in Mondstadt for generations. [I got bored sitting around at home, and decided to set off on a journey to expand my horizons.]
Hyperborea, Natlantian, Remuria & Khaun-Arya. Dont the word being hyphenated and Arya capitalized are being too specific? Arya reminds me of Mond's ost "Dream Aria". Khaun-Aria?
Credit to u/Sun_ele155 for telling me for that Aria means wind in latin and Khaenriah possibly being a translation of "traitor of wind" (Im sorry for the unsolicited tag so pls feel free to tell me if you dont like that 🙏)
I think you're already getting a clear picture but let me add more "pieces".
The Abyss Order stole a statue of Barbatos and hung it upside down. Doesn't it signifies their hate against this god? Out of all the other statues of 7?
Kaeya was specifically sent to Dawn Winery, with his dad looking back to him with hatred and hope.
These are what I currently have to support this theory (+other Mondstadt ominous signs. Im curious if the Dadaupa battle is related to this). But Im sure I could dig more and Im currently doing that. It's just that this I seriously, seriously, want to share this realization to y'all even if I havent have yet all the pieces:
Haven't you realized it yet? What if Khaenriah were former Mondstadtians! Maybe during in the early ages where Mondstadt is in its lowest point, possibly the slavery period, where their god has immensely disappointed them. Believing that Barbatos has abandoned them. So they branched out, traveled far and formed a new kingdom? In the first Chasm Interlude, a Dain Quest, Dain stated that the ruins there were much more older than their ex-kingdom.hah So how about this, what if these ex-Mondstatians discovered and successfully studied the civilization's technology of this ruins and migrated underground with it?
Or how about these former Mondstatians migrating with the already formed kingdom underground, fully taking it over?
You know, I wonder how did the Crimson Moon Dynasty end?
(Ofc, ex-Mondstatians overtaking the Crimson Moon Dynasty is still just a possibility; it could had started way before!)
Imagine that, Kaeya is a fully Mondstadtian nobility! (Well, half). It's such a game-changing fascinating thought isnt it?
Let me share this tidbit I think is relevant:
“[...] The Temple of Silence was originally founded by the ruling elite of the day. Traditionally, such organizations are bound by a strict and ancient code of nobility.” (Cyno SQ2 spoilers)
Now I think they want get back to their roots and rule it again, and using it for revenge against Celestia.
You know, I dont know why I never thought and realized of this before, Khaenrians being ex-former-Mondstadtians, despite the obvious "pieces" being right there-. I only remember being confused by Kaeya's line “My family has lived in Mondstadt for generations”. But I guess playing through the new update made me "see" it.
Whoever said or thought that Kaeya was involved in a ceremony, and/or that's how he got his "truth-seekinghidden eye ability", I think we nailed it. A possibility of course. A doubt. Just do remind if we take this SQ as an allegory(feels like most SQs I played are), there highly could be littered with red-herrings or that it's not a total representation (I mean, obviously. Im still leaning onto the "opposites in each cycles" theory but Im still trying to prove that).
———
Separate comments:
If we assume that the cycle "Hyperborea" occured in Snezhnaya (the word relates to extreme north, look it up) and "Natlantian" for Natlan, try to think of civilizations that were both destroyed and its people cursed, representing each of our present nations. Outside of the unified civilizations ofc (with Trifecta symbols), post-Primordial One/Celestia rule. ALSO NOTE THAT WE ARE STILL HALF-WAY OF THE KHAUN-ARYA CYCLE (sorry for the caps, I just lately discovered this one). What happened in Khaenriah was only the beginning
Do you know, during the Remuria ruling era, there were two "nations" that were involved to something, and no, Im not talking abt Fontaine for the other one. Cassiodor's former tribe (it's a group of people, it counts right?), was destroyed and its people ‘enslaved’ by Remuria (hmm, doesnt it overlap with ex-mond theory too?). Him defecting to Remuria and being, *ahem*, close friends with Boethius being the reason of escaping that fate. In the end, Remuria still had gotten itself destroyed. Tbh I still need to look deeply more onto this but this is what I currently have.
Okay now, to this final part is an afterthought of the post and I don't have the explanation for it(meaning proof). It was an instantaneous thought. And I quickly forgot what urged me that thought, the reasons why. Sorry, but I have(and want) to write this here for the record: I couldn't help but feel that, in the same way we experience and progress through the storyline in the game, this samsara cycles shenanigans, civilizations being destroyed, first started in Mondstadt. And we are now back in a full circle.

2024.05.22 02:09 Hungry_Charge2857 Is FFT:A2 worth my time?

I've played the shit out of FFT. Still have my original copy that ask marks on it from the CD cleaner machine I had back in the day. I tried FFT Advance and I'll admit I didn't care for it. The Judge system I didn't care for. I also didn't care for Abilities being tied to different weapons. Also jobs being tied to certain races. Well I went to a garage sale and I bought a few things: Far Cry 5, National Lampoons Christmas, PlayStation Underground Vol.5, and a copy of FFT:A2. I've been staring at this copy of A2 wondering if it'll be worth it since after two playthroughs of FFT:A I said never again. I mean it was only $4 and if they liked it I'm sure they would have charged more. Basically I'm looking if someone can try to hype me up to play it.

2024.05.22 02:08 Devotion37 I think I figured out the problem with the 500kg bomb, and it's annoying

So I was playing a level 7 match and dropped a 500kg on a bug hole expecting maybe 5 kills. Much to my surprise, I saw the bomb glitch and "land" in thin air above the target, and it ended up killing 20ish bugs instead.
My theory is that the bomb actually has a blast radius that matches the size of the explosion seen, it's just not interacting with the ground correctly. I always see my bombs land into the dirt and stick out a little bit with part of the bomb underground. Could it be that most of the blast is actually happening under the surface and not interacting with the enemies above the ground?
This might also be why the only use for it right now is to kill heavy enemies directly over the blast. Since the blast is moving through the bomb where it lands, it's basically a hole for the blast to escape from underground.
What do you all think?

2024.05.22 01:22 Left_Bumblebee2017 Random questions

So I’m watching for the third time, just started season 2 again. So there’s no spoilers here (for me), but just a few questions that I’m either completely overlooking the answer to or just not understanding 1) how’d they know that June was an adulterer, I would assume that’s not public knowledge like an abortion. 2) were the original gilead people like a huge underground group that just came up one day and overthrew everything? (I just rewatched the episode where June comes home from the hospital & they’re watching them overthrow the White House) 3) why did Jeanette (?) go from so sassy and a hard ass to seemingly completely flipping the switch over night. UNDERSTANDABLY she’d act different after her eye gets taken. But I didn’t notice the absolute baby talk / immature style that she gives off from other people with handicaps - I’m not taking away from what they did to her, just not understanding. 4) I’m still confused on if Nick & Joseph are suppose to be “good guys” or not. I understand they both played a part in the beginning of it all, but then they seem to be good. Then when June is out of gilead they seem like crappy dudes again. 5) They’re super religious right? So why’d they hang all the people who were preachers, and all the people in churches, and demolish all the churches? 6) why even the people who are against it still say the things like “under his eye” and all that
If you read all that, I’m sorry 🤣 and Thanks 🩶

2024.05.22 01:13 PalpitationKlutzy854 6 Hour gig

Got a 6 hour long gig coming up, will play mainly "underground" house and techno.
I am not used to playing this long, if I'm not mistaken I have played 3 or maybe 4 hours maximum before, but in a bit more relaxed setting.
This will be one of the first times I will play in a packed venue for people I do not know, and definitely for 6 hours.
Any special things worth considering or some tips that one should know?
I have around 500 tracks of the style this gig will focus on(old school and underground house and some below 130bpm techno). I figure that will be enough, planing on doing mainly basic intro-outro mixing for at least for the first 2-3 hours or so, so I can make my tracks last a bit longer, but also because I feel that it fits the earlier part of the night. And then after that I might mix a bit faster but rather go for alot of layering and actual mixing of tracks.
What do you guys think, 500 tracks should be fine right?
I also have a longer "bathroom track" or two I will play when I need the bathroom. Will eat just before it starts, and take it easy on the alcohol during the gig.
Any other things?

2024.05.22 01:04 Obsequium_Minaris Ballistic Coefficient - Chapter 13

First / Previous / Royal Road / Patreon (Read 12 Chapters Ahead)

Together, Pale and Kayla dragged the mage back to the cave they'd been using for shelter, barely managing to get him inside before the snowfall began again. Pale tied his hands behind his back and his legs together using some paracord she had in her pack, and the two of them stood over the man, staring down at him.
"What now?" Kayla asked. "Do we wait for him to-"
Pale cut her off by bringing the stock of her shotgun across the berserker's face. He reeled from the strike, suddenly catapulting awake, his eyes wide as several of his teeth came spilling out across the stone cave floor. He coughed, spitting out a glob of blood before fixing her with a harsh glare. Smoke began to rise from his palms, but Pale stopped him by putting the barrel of her gun flush with his crotch.
"Unless you want to lose something, I'd suggest keeping your magic under control," she threatened. "Because if I pull this trigger, there isn't a healer alive who'll be able to give back what you'll lose."
The man snarled at her, but the smoke curling up from his hands stopped all the same. He spat out more blood. "The fuck am I still alive for?"
"I think you know exactly what you're alive for. Now, are you going to play nice and tell us what we want to know, or am I going to have to force it out of you piece by piece?"
The mage grinned at her, showing off a mouth full of missing teeth and liquid crimson. "You really think I'd betray my brothers like that?"
"Last I checked, your brothers are all dead," Pale said absentmindedly. "But still, I was hoping you'd pick the hard way; I needed to relieve some stress."
She let her shotgun hang from its sling, then drew her knife. With her free hand, she grabbed one of his fingers, then positioned the blade at the tip.
"Last chance to offer up what you know," she threatened.
The mage barked out a laugh. "Fuck off. You really think I'd ever-"
His bravado suddenly gave way to an agonized scream as Pale forced the blade of her knife underneath his fingernail. He thrashed in agony as she twisted the knife before roughly yanking it free, taking the fingernail with it. She held the disembodied nail up to him, then flicked it away.
"Have I made my point?" she said evenly. "Because last I checked, you've still got nine fingers and ten toes, not to mention a variety of other things I could poke at and prod at and cut off. And when you run out of those, I can just start skinning you bit by bit."
"Fuck you…" he breathed through gritted teeth. "I'll never-"
She took another fingernail for his troubles. Idly, Pale was aware of Kayla flinching with every scream that erupted out of the man's throat, but that didn't bother her.
Kayla had specified no death, but that didn't mean she couldn't make this hurt like hell.
She again positioned the knife at one of his fingertips, only for him to give a weak, shuddering, pain-filled cough.
"W-wait…" he croaked.
"I see your tongue has been thoroughly loosened," she surmised, though she didn't dare to move the blade even a millimeter away from his next finger.
"What do you have for me?"
"I can give you our leader's name."
"And?"
"What do you mean, and? He doesn't tell us anything, he just pays us and feeds us, like any good leader should."
Pale's expression narrowed. "You had better give me something more substantial to go on, otherwise I have no reason to keep you around."
"Pale-" Kayla began, only to fall silent when she held up a hand. Reluctantly, Kayla backed down, though she continued to look on with concern as Pale's grip around her blade turned white-knuckled.
"Tell me something useful," Pale demanded. "Unless you want to see exactly how much pain I can commit to before I get bored."
"Okay, okay!" the bandit growled. "Fine… our leader's name is Sven Greymane, the warrior-king of the northern isles. He's the one who ordered us to attack certain towns on this continent."
"Is that why you sacked some and completely bypassed others?"
He nodded. "Yes. That was all part of the plan – he'd give us locations to attack, pay us in gold and food to attack them, and then let us keep whatever valuables we wanted afterwards."
"And did he tell you why he only wanted specific locations attacked, while others were to be spared?"
The mage shook his head. "No, and we knew better than to ask questions given how good of a deal it was."
Kayla suddenly stepped forwards. "One of those towns was my village," she growled. "Your friends captured several people, including my father, and took them back to the northern isles."
The mage leaned in, squinting to get a better look at her, before finally shrugging. "I don't know anything about that."
"Liar," Pale hissed.
"It's the truth. I wasn't involved with the attack on any Beastkin town."
"Of course, you'd say that," Kayla said through gritted teeth. "You're worried about what will happen to you if you admit to us here and now that you had something to do with it."
"Don't know what else to tell you. I had nothing to do with the attack on you and yours, and I didn't take any Beastkin slaves."
"Enough of this," Pale snapped. "How long do we have to find her father?"
The bandit cracked a wide grin at her. "You're probably already too late. If the girl's father is anything like her, then he's already been deemed to be useless as a slave – too mouthy for his own good, and mouthy slaves don't last very long among my people."
A vein pulsed in Kayla's forehead as she clenched and unclenched her fists. "Answer the question," she demanded. "Assuming he isn't murdered before we can get there, how long do slaves typically last while with your people?"
"Depends on the slave. Men tend to last longer, provided they're young enough and in good health. Of course, he was taken in the first place, so I assume that someone saw some value in him, at least enough to want him for themselves. Now, that only accounts for a berserker warrior having a bad day and killing someone as a result. If he's unlucky, he'll succumb to the elements before long." The mage shrugged. "It wouldn't make any sense for us to spend all that time capturing and enslaving someone only to let them die so soon, unless they just so happened to be a massive pain in the ass."
"So you claim," Pale said dismissively. "What else do you have for us?"
"I've told you enough," the man grunted. "Now hurry up and let me go."
"And why would I do that?" Pale demanded. "So you can go back to robbing and killing the innocent? Is your life really worth the lives of the people you'd kill if we let you go?"
"It is to her." He motioned towards Kayla, who was staring at him and trembling as she bit her lip, deep in thought.
Pale's eyes narrowed. "Kayla."
Kayla jumped slightly at the sound of her name being called. She hesitated for a moment before letting out a sigh. "...You should let him go."
"You know I can't do that, Kayla. If we let him go, he'll just go right back to doing what brought him here. Either we end this here and now and prevent him from taking more innocent lives, or he goes on for however long it takes for someone else to put him down."
"I know!" Kayla spat. "It's just… I don't know what to do… I don't want to be responsible for someone's death like this…"
"I understand that, but this is war," Pale insisted. "Death is an unavoidable part of that."
"What do you mean, war?" Kayla asked, horrified at the prospects of what Pale had just suggested. "You… you really are a soldier, aren't you? That's why you're doing this – it's a chance to do what you were made to do…"
"War is in my nature," Pale insisted. "It is why I was created. You are correct that this is a chance to fulfill my prime directive, but not in the way that you think." She turned her gaze back towards the bandit. "I need to get off this planet and back into the war I left behind before it's too late to save my creators. If killing this man will get me there faster, then I will not hesitate to do that."
"But… you can't know that killing him will help with that," Kayla pointed out. "He's just one man…"
"Every second spent debating his existence is one not spent working towards my ultimate goal. I ask for your input on what to do with him because I value your opinion as my ally, and do not wish to alienate you by leaving you out of major decisions such as that, but that does not mean I will not try to make you see reason when I think you are about to make a terrible decision." Pale sheathed her knife and hefted her shotgun. "You are concerned with the loss of innocent life, yes? Well, letting me kill this man will save an untold number of them. Is his life really worth all of theirs?"
"You can't think of it that way! He's still a person, too!"
"He is," Pale agreed. "But as far as I am concerned, his right to life is now forfeit, as he used it to torture and murder other people."
The bandit suddenly burst out laughing. "Listen to you two! You're honestly debating whether or not to take a life. How quaint, not to mention innocent. Consider me entertained."
Pale bashed him with the stock of her gun once more, knocking a few more of his teeth out in the process. As he coughed on blood and bone shards, she turned back to Kayla.
"See reason in this," she implored. "Letting him live means-"
"I know!" Kayla interrupted. Her wolf ears flattened against her skull, and in a quieter voice, she repeated, "...I know."
Her tail lashed behind her, and finally, she shook her head. "...I was willing to fight for you," she said softly. "I tried to convince you that you weren't just a killing machine – that you had a sjel, and that it was worth something. And maybe I was right. But even if I was… even if you're not just a killing machine… you seem dead-set on trying to be one. And if that's what you want, then who am I to stop you? Do what you want with him, Pale; after all, it's what you were programmed to do."
Kayla turned and marched out of the cave. Pale watched her go, waiting until she was completely gone before acting.
A single gunshot split the night.

2024.05.22 00:58 ShinnigLightAsmr [MFFFF] [M4F] Crystal Love Part One [Elven Prince x Human Listener] [Fantasy] [Enemies to More?] [Elf] [Not poly] [Sass] [RERELEASE]

After getting alot more experience, I have decided to rerelease my first script, with a few formatting changes. I wanted this and the rest of the ongoing series to match the standards of the other scripts in my library.
Note: Monetization is fine, just credit me, send a link of audios, and ask me before making changes of any kind.
Context: A young woman (listener) goes into the forbidden forest to get healing herbs. Her grandmother has gotten deathly ill and only the herbs in the forest have the power to her ailment. As the woman is picking the herbs, she feels a nearby presence. She brushes it off as being a curious animal, but the presence seems to get closer and closer. Before she knows it, a hand rips away her basket and starts rifling through it. The hand belongs to the elf prince who rules and protects the forbidden forest.
Elf Prince: (Smirk) Ah ha! Look what we have here! A little human trying to steal from my forest. Don’t you know it is not nice to take what is not yours?
…..
Elf Prince: [basket rustling sounds] Fire blossoms, Moon berries, and Golden apples. All of these would fetch a high price on the black market. (Voice lowers, menacing) You’re not planning on selling these, are you?
….
Elf Prince: These are for your sick grandmother? (Voice goes back to normal) That honestly makes more sense. You do not really look like the type to sell stuff on the black market. Let me guess, you are going to make that healing soup, the one that is supposed to heal any illness?
….
Elf Prince: So, since the doctor could not help, you decided to take matters into your own hands? In that case, I guess I will not kill you. However … I do require payment.
[Heartbeat and fleshy sounds]
Elf Prince: (Shocked voice) This heart is nearly spotless! I do not normally see mortals with hearts this clean. Now, do not panic. This heart is not like the one that keeps your blood pumping. Once you stepped into the elven domain, the way your body functions slightly changed. This crystal heart is a physical representation of a person’s intentions, thoughts, feelings, etc. When mortals typically cross the border, their hearts are covered in black spots or are nearly black. They usually come here for fame, money, magic, or even eternal life. You, on the other hand, came here for your sick grandmother, a non-selfish reason.
….
Elf Prince: You do not know how this heart can be payment? You see, a heart of this condition can be used for all sorts of things. Jewelry, elixirs, love potions, amulets of power. And besides, it is the most valuable thing on you. The elves do not accept your human coinage anyway. If it makes you feel any better, I will cut you a deal. In exchange for half of your heart, I will let you leave my forest with everything in your basket. However …. there will be some side effects.
Elf Prince: You will still be able to feel and love, but you will always feel like something is missing. Like your life is not fully complete. But it is all worth it for helping your grandmother, right?
….
Elf Prince: The side effect of losing your whole heart is that you would never be able to love again. Shadows would forever follow you and the world would be tinged with gray. You would still be able to be polite to people but never make deep emotional connections. If you feel like paying with half of your heart is not a good deal for you, I could take you to see my mother, Queen Freyalise. (smirk) I do have to warn you though, she is not always as good-hearted as myself.
….
Elf Prince: Very well! I will take you to Her Majesty’s court in a moment. In the meantime, here is your heart [heartbeat and fleshy sound] and here is your basket. In could keep these, but you would never make it out of the realm alive if you tried to run, so it does not really matter if you hold these or not. Come now little mortal, it is time to pay mother dearest a visit.
(Time Skip: The Elven Prince and Listener have arrived at Queen Freyalise’s court. Word has gotten around that the prince has found a human, who wishes to make a deal with the queen. Her majesty sits upon her throne, waiting for her son with open arms and anticipating Listener’s next move.)
Queen Freyalise: Prince Damar, my son! You have finally decided to pay your dear old mother a visit! Now come here and give me a hug!
….
Queen Freyalise: Oh! I see my son has forgotten to mention his name. He is Prince Damar Aquarius Uriqen. My youngest of four sons and the only one unwed
Damar: Mother, for the thousandth time, I am not interested in having a bride. I am fine being by myself and looking after the forest.
Queen Freyalise: Do not “Mother” me, young man. It is about time you settled down and gave me grandchildren. I am not getting any younger, you know.
Damar: Mother, you are over three thousand years old and immortal. You will always be “Younger.”
Queen Freyalise: That is beside the point. (Talks to Listener) Now, my dear girl, I have gotten word of your virtually unblemished heart. May I see it?
…. [Heartbeat and fleshy sounds]
Queen Freyalise: So, it is true! This heart is almost completely clear! I only see a few flaws here and there, but they are hardly noticeable. As for the deal, unfortunately, I hardly ever offer lower than three-fourths of a heart.
….
Queen Freyalise: However, since your heart is purer than most mortals that come into our lands and your purpose was not for your own gain, I will make you a deal that I have only made one other time. In exchange for you leaving my realm with your heart and the herbs you gathered, you will complete three tasks for me. One, collect a tail feather from the Ruby Thunderbird. Two, collect a scale from the mammoth emerald serpent. Three, gather the tears of a silver unicorn. And since you mortals usually need help on quests like this, I will allow you to pick one companion from my court, not including myself of course.
….
Damar: (surprised) Me?! Mother, you can not allow this! Who will look after the forest?! Why do I have to babysit this human?!
Queen Freyalise: First of all, I said she could pick anyone here besides me. Second, Garolon (second oldest prince) will take over your duties during the tasks. And third, you are not babysitting her, you are making sure she stays on the path and does not get eaten. Besides, you two may even fall in love and give me my grandchildren. Now, my dear girl, you have a long day ahead of you. My maids will show you to your room and will help you settle in for the night. Tomorrow, we will get you two all set for your journey.
(Time Skip, the maids are helping Listener take a bath to try and calm her for bed)
Elven Maid 1: You must excuse the queen, miss. She has been wanting grandchildren for a few hundred years now. For some reason, the three other sons have yet to produce any. She just gets over-excited whenever she finds a potential bride for Prince Damar. [water pouring sound]
Elven Maid 2: You are actually quite lucky to be considered as a potential bride. Her majesty typically does not see humans as worthy of marrying into her family, but your heart proves that you may bring some good things into the court. I honestly find some of the noblewomen quite stuffy. [soap suds sounds?]
Elven Maid 3: Also, you are the second person to ever be offered those three tasks. The first was another mortal woman who wanted some Golden apples for her siblings. Her village’s food supply was running low during a particularly bad winter. She saw those Golden apples on a branch just outside the forest’s entrance and picked some. She was immediately taken to the Queen by some guards and was asked why she dared to do such a thing. After the woman stated her case, Queen Freyalise offered her three tasks in exchange for the apples and food to help her village survive until spring. The woman managed to complete all of the tasks and was sent home with enough food for the winter. [water pouring sounds]
Elven maid 1: If I remember correctly, the human woman looked awfully a lot like you. Who knows, you two may be related and that could be another reason why you were offered the tasks. Now, let us get you into some warm clothes and to bed. You have a long day ahead of you.
(In the Queen Freyalise’s chambers)
Damar: I still do not know why you even considered that girl for the trials. She would be killed the moment the Thunderbird sees her. I can not have her blood on my hands.
Queen Freyalise: I made that deal because she reminded me of that other mortal woman. I even have a feeling that the two of them may be related. As for you, her blood will not be on your hands. She chose this and if she dies, then at least she did for someone else. Life is full of sacrifices and risks. You can not always play it safe when someone else’s life is on the line.
Damar: But mother…
Queen Freyalise: Goodnight Damar. You have a long journey ahead of you and you will need your sleep. I will make sure enough supplies are packed for the two of you. Also, please keep her alive. I have a feeling she will bring a lot of light to this old place.

I’ve heard about the “Brook Super Converter,” but figured I would ask first. So many great memories with this thing playing NFS Underground 2.. I always felt like an F1 driver using the paddle shifters, trying to get my best lap times on different tracks.

2024.05.22 00:33 The_MadMage_Halaster Looking for Feedback on a Pair of Antagonists.

I just realized that the main antagonist of my campaign (a Lasombra Sabbat priest attempting to take over Santa Cruz) needs a couple of minions that the party can actually face down and reasonably fight, either physically or socially. So I have created two of them: the Shaw Brothers.
They are a pair of identical twins named Benjamin and Timothy, who were born in 1799 to a very religious family in Virginia. Identical through most of their childhood they started to diverge from each other personality wise in their late teenage years, when Benjamin began to chafe under his father's strict and demanding ways.
Eventually, after a spat, Benjamin ran away from home and became a traveling rapscallion who carved a path of hedonism and youthful chaos across the southern half of the Union. He got involved in all manner of things, some criminal some not, and eventually ended up on a riverboat on the Mississippi playing cards with a mysterious stranger late into the night. He was a remarkably good gambler and managed to whittle down his opponent until the stranger had only one thing left to bet, immortality. Benjamin naturally doubted this offer, but seeing as it was both late and night and he had already won so much he decided to humor the stranger. He won that hand too, and was swiftly Embraced into the night by the mysterious stranger.
The stranger was a vampire (obviously) of clan Brujah who took Benjamin to New Orleans, where they got involved in the mess of vampire politics that place was in the early 1800s. Eventually Benjamin grew tired of vampiric politics, and he found his new Sire somehow even more controlling than his father had been. Despite being a Brujah his sire was of the domineering sort who strong-armed anyone who stood against their wishes. Eventually he was able to free himself by using the Capture of New Orleans during the Civil War to trick his sire into going near an ammo depot which he then had an agent detonated Now free from his master he left to find a new group which would grant him the freedom he desired, whereupon he fell in with the Sabbat. Their message greatly resonated with him, particularly the "vampires are better then all the mortals let's rule them" part.
After a few years with them he decided to see what had become of his brother, and so traveled back to Virginia.
During this time Timothy had become a priest, gotten involved in the Second Great Awakening, and eventually got into what amounts to a turf war with a rival pastor. Said rival pastor sent goons after him to beat him up, so when Benjamin found him he was laying injured on his death bed.
Benjamin explained to his brother that he had finally found faith, and he offered to share that new faith with Timothy. Timothy accused him of being a monster against god, which Benjamin didn't deny. He instead offered Timothy first revenge against the pastor who had wounded him, as well as the ability to usher in a new golden age with the return of the Dark Father. He also used a wee bit of Presence as well. Eventually Timothy gave in and was Embraced by his brother. They then killed that pastor and his goons together, and when the Presence and initial bloodlust wore off Timothy bitterly accepted his new state.
Later the two of them joined up under that Lasombra and now serve as his muscle.
Benjamin is a social Brujah, who is also fair in a fight (Presence, Potence). Meanwhile Timothy is much more confrontational, and is a crack shot with firearms who has experience fighting as a member of the Underground Railroad close to the front lines (Clerity, Potence). Benjamin is by far the most dangerous of the two, with him having both half a century and a generation on his elderly brother. He is also a narcissistic sadist who lacks the civility Timothy at least continues to possess. But what he lacks in morals he more than makes up for in charm, clever social manipulation, and a cruel cunning.
Together the two are a dangerous tag-team who will provide a strong challenge for my players.

So, what do all of you think?
P.S. I also made some minis in HeroForge for reference:

Enter the Dragonfly isn't as bad as everyone said it was
Currently on my first ever legitimate play through of ETD. I'm genuinely enjoying it. Yes there are bugs, but oh well. I'm enjoying it for what it is. The first three are a massive part of my childhood. This was a fun level and I'm about to play Cloud 9 for the first time since I just got enough dragonflies. It was definitely odd hearing the Pigs doing the professors "ah-ha!" Sound.
One thing I've also learned is to save constantly which isn't that annoying since I can do it in menu. When I completed this level for the first time earlier today it froze on the screen where it saves while spyro glides back to the home world. Im just trying to enjoy it as a 4th spyro game I didn't play as a kid.
Is there anyone else that enjoys this game? I tried playing a heroes tail and I seriously can't get past them switching the flame and charge buttons. It literally ruins it for me and I can't play it for more than five minutes or so. ETD seems miles ahead even with problems.

2024.05.22 00:24 Fakename_Bill Significance of tape recorder colors?

As you may have noticed, those little tape recorders scattered around the map that play audio logs when you click them come in two different colors. Most of them are white, but a few are orange. I haven't been able to identify any consistent pattern to which ones are which color.
Note that I'm talking about the color of the actual tape recorder object that the player interacts with, not any other context where the colors white and orange are relevant to audio logs. Spoilers pertaining to that other context: In the pond between the town and quarry that acts as a live map of the player's progress, audio logs are represented by lilies floating on the surface. All the lilies start out as closed buds, and each lily blooms when its corresponding audio log is played. Some of these lilies are white and others are orange; however, I was under the impression that the orange lilies represented audio logs found underground whereas the white ones are for logs on the surface. If this is true, then the colors of the tape recorders can't mean the same thing, as some of the ones found underground are white and some on the surface are orange.
Any significance to the colors?

2024.05.22 00:12 applesauce_92 5x Pro Optimal Settings for PS2 and Questions/Issues

I'm running my PS2 through the 5x Pro with HD Retrovision cables into my Samsung Q6 (QLED) 4K TV. I've experimented with all output resolutions, and interestingly enough 720p seems to better soften text image better than 1080p (which seems to cause scaling artifacts on text). Does this sound normal? Samsung is awful when it comes to explaining their technology - it's not clear if I'm viewing a true 720p/1080p image or if the TV is attempting to scale the 720p/1080p image up to 4k (there is not a setting in the TV menu to control this).
Next, I have a few games with progressive scan mode. When enabled, the sharpness of text images immediately got worse and somewhat distorted. Is there a specific setting in the RT5x Pro I should be changing when running the PS2 in progressive scan mode? Or is it true passthrough?
Lastly, some games (especially with smaller text) just look like ****. I assume this is normal and my nostalgia glasses are blinding. Specifically, was playing Need For Speed Underground 2, and the license plate is unreadable at any resolution and setting. Also whenever a new song plays, a pop-up of the artist/album/song shows in the top left corner, which is nearly unreadable. I'm assuming this is just NFSU2 having trash graphics (I do remember them not being great as a kid playing on CRT), and when I tested other racing games, I didn't have this same issue.
I guess I should look into wobbling pixel's guide for PS2, but I figured I'd come here for any insight to what I'm experiencing. Especially if anyone has the same TV (thinking about just running through a PC monitor)...

2024.05.21 23:33 Ok-Significance-1752 Sorry for being a bit late with this story I had several other projects and schoolwork I had to do but here it is. How Martlet and Papyruses puzzle helped the entertainment industry.

Martlet and Papyrus are two names that are rather famous throughout the Undertale and Undertale yellow communities. Of course, there are many things that come to mind when you here both names. Papyrus for example is the loud. arrogant, but kind skeleton that is the brother to the funny Skeleton Man (Sans). Martlet on the other hand you might remember as kind of a mother figure to clover if you support the idea of momlet or maybe just the puzzle loving bird friend of clover. Each of these characters have unique fates for each Fanfiction a member of our beloved community writes. Whether its romance, tragedy, or a simple slice of life fanfic. So where do these two falls in my little world of a second human monster war. Well, it might be a bit more complex than one might think.

Opening UN Archives.

The second monster human war was the most destructive war in history and resulted in the destruction of several Undertale AUs and monster race losing 90% of their population all because they followed a racist and mentally Ill scientist name Chujin. As tragic of this sounds it doesn't mean people tried to improve the aftermath and make life easier. Papyrus and Martlet are a good example of this.
Martlet was born in the human year 1959 at an unknown date. Accounts of her early life and parents have been lost to history to due Asgor and the monsters general poor record keeping with Alphy's and Chujin being the only ones who kept some records of sorts. It's possible this poor record keeping is why Chujin thought the monster population was bigger than it actually was. What we do know is Martlets part the events of what the United Nations Elimination of Monsters Coalition calls Undertale Yellow are and some of her life just before the events. It's suggested by Human historians that Martlet got into puzzles when she was possibly 12 in human years but that's just a rough idea. Interviews with her few surviving friends state that she made her first puzzle at 6 years old in monster years which is roughly 14 years old in human years. To further complicate things is the fact that different monsters age differently than others with Martlets species having the closest correlation to human years out of all monsters.
Payrpus birth and exact age are harder to track down. All we know is that he and his brother Sans (Currently living in New Ebot in Colorado. Mt Ebot is in Colorado) appeared in the underground out of nowhere in 1980 on the [Redacted] of [Redacted]. Papyrus took a job as a royal guard somewhere between 1980-1981 and met Martlet possibly around that time. We both know based on William Henderson's interview with Papyrus and a mention by Flowey that they exchanged blueprints for their respective puzzles on occasions and while Papyrus describes her as his closest friend Sans stated that "She was simply my brothers pen pal" whether this was Sans simply messing with Willaim Henderson or him saying the true we'll never know.
EVENTS OF UNDERTALE YELLOW
The turning point in Martlets life came on May 12th when a certain kid named Clover fell into the underground. Clover was born on the 4th of July 1969 though his family moved to the to the town of Ebot Colorado in 1978. He never got to meet his father until 1975 due to his father's enlistment into the Unified states of the Americas army during the Vietnam war. (1962-74. This is an Alternate Vietnam the US still loses however) When his father came back, he was a drunken and PTSD ridden mess. Clover's mother was little better as she was rather neglectful and lazy. Clovers Unhealthy Family life would play a role into going ahead with his plan to find the forgotten 6 children who had gone missing throughout the 60s and 70s. He developed a fascination with cowboys when watching western movies (Particularly the old ones) along with a cowboy attire. He wore this attire proudly. Due to his family life, he matured rapidly. When his friend Integra (The soul integrity) went missing when she was dared to climb MT Ebot it was the final nail in the coffin for him and he began to prepare himself for an expedition into the mountain. He bought a Coll-Wesson revolver and rope by stealing money from his father. (He was beaten for this) on May the 12th he climbed Mt Ebot and jumped into the underground and died.... Oh, wait no Flowey brought him back to life without him knowing. Clover then met Flowey around 30 minutes later starting his journey.
Martlet in the meantime was lazily relaxing in one of the many checkpoints in the Snowdin area. The exact time she met clover is unknown, but it was most likely 1 hour after she had sent a list of suggestions to how Payprus could improve his puzzles. Martlet originally tried to follow protocol and capture clover however after seeing how peaceful clover was, she gave up on it. Then after their failed attempt to get to the hot lands, the fiasco in the wild east, and meeting Ceroba and Chujin, Ceroba (Chujin is alive in my story, but Kanko is not and was killed by integrity according to Chujin) was revealed to want clovers soul to bring back Kanako. Chujin was horrified at the thought of killing an innocent kid and went against his wife's wishes (Unknown to the others this was a ploy to gain trust) Martlet and clover spoke briefly on a hotel rooftop before going with Starlo and Chujin to face Ceroba. Ceroba knocked Martlet, Starlo, and Chujin (Who was only pretending) out. Clover battled it out with Ceroba on the 13ths of May. Clover came close to winning until Chujin drove a knife through his back killing him. Chujin then asked Ceroba to not use clovers soul to bring back monster kind but to instead to give it to Asgor so monster kind can be free. (Chujin is still the royal scientist in my AU) Ceroba after some arguing agrees with Chujin as Martlet and Starlo begin to wake up. Chujin calls the royal guard who apprehend Starlo but Martlet Barely escapes by flying away.
Knowing her time was now limited she sent the last Blueprints to Papyrus before the royal Guard burst into her home at around midnight and captured her. Martlet and Starlo were executed by undying on the 14th of May early morning. While Martlets story came to an end her legacy and puzzles did not as Papyrus received her blueprints on the 14th and would hide them from the royal guard.
EVENTS OF THE SECOND HUMAN MONSTER WAR AND PAPYRUSES RISE TO FAME.
Papyrus would with the help of Sans create more puzzle's and preserve Martlets puzzles. Then on September 4th, 1984, Frisk fell into the underground and was killed by Undying. After this Papyrus was ordered to destroy his puzzle's as they now had no use to monster kind as the invasion of the surface was inevitable. Papyrus as a sign of things to come suggested instead of destroying the puzzles they should be used to entertain monster kind's children. Undying would allow it and Papyrus who still wanted to hunt the humans though his loyalty was shaken by martlets execution agreed to be in the first wave out of the underground. On the 10th of September the monster climbed up to the surface for the first time.
The sight was so breathtaking many simply forget that they were invading. Chujin fear that the humans would be waiting for them up on the surface ready to exterminate monster kind was proven false within the first day as no human was spotted on the first day. Chujin still refused to believe reports and still ordered the invasion forward. Papyrus spent the first day trying to make more puzzles. On the 11th the town of Ebot was spotted and attacked by Asgors army and Chujins boss monsters and axis models. Papyrus was in the attack but quickly simply broken down as he watched the monsters slaughter humans indiscriminately. What made Papyrus ultimately desert the Royal Guard was the Human police's along with the 9th National Guards battalions last stand as they bought time for the civilians to evacuate the time. Papyrus stated in his interview with William Henderson decades later "IT WAS THEN ON THAT DAY I KNEW WE HAD LOST THE WAR. THE HUMANS PROVED BOTH BRAVER AND FAR KINDER THAN THE GREAT PAPYRUS AND MONSTER KIND!! IF THE GREAT PAPYRUS COULD GO BACK IN TIME HE WOULD HAVE GLADLY FOUGHT WITH THOSE BRAVE HUMANS!!"
Papyrus and later his brother Sans would go into hiding for most of the war until 1996 when they switched sides and joined the Commonwealth of Britannia's army. They would serve in the Commonwealths army until 1998 when they both retired. It was around this time when Papyrus began his journey to help the entertainment industry and carry on Martlets puzzle making legacy. The second human monster war by the time he had retired had gone on for 14 brutal years and large amounts of homes and cities had been destroyed. Papyrus would turn his attention to entertaining the many children who had lost their fathers and mothers during the ongoing conflict by hosting's puzzle solving challenges. Many of these puzzles' Martlets puzzles, and these proved to be a favorite among human children. Sans also helped and had stopped being lazily for once in his life.
When interviewed by William Henderson and asked what inspired him to do this he stated. "THE GREAT PAPYRUS SIMPLY DOESNT WATCH AS CHILDREN CRY IN THEIR SLEEPY AND REMAIN SAD. ITS NOT WHAT THE GREAT PAPYRUS DOES." The entertainment industry caught onto what Papyrus was doing in 2000 and offered to not only to fund his puzzle challenges but to make them into a game show of sorts. The show "Papyruses puzzles" was born as a result of this and has remained popular ever since. Sans found his calling in the fast-food industry and opened up his own fast-food chain to honor Grillbies who had died during the war. Papyrus would give a lot of credit to Martlet for helping him discover puzzles and funded the building of a statue in her honor.
WHAT PAPYRUS IS DOING NOW.
Papyrus is currently these days is donating much of his money to the protection of the underground charity and has recently created the Blue Bird Puzzle Corporation (Refence to Martlet). Martlet was dug up by UNEMC soldiers (United Nations Eliminations of Monsters Coalition) and was buried under a second statue made in her honor in Snowdin next to the Statue of Clover and the 6 other souls. Papyrus pays a visit to her grave once very 6 months. An inscription on her statue reads "The one that inspired THE GREAT PAPYRUS to make puzzles."

2024.05.21 22:45 rannyspindriftlover Dream about rattlesnake and my ex

I had a weird dream where we were having some sort of party because we had people over. I remember my ex being there and I was just playing valorant. Went down for a bit to chill and as she was leaving she yelled and I went out and saw a rattlesnake rattling its tail. It then went into hiding and never came back out again. Told her she should have had her boyfriend pick her up but she said it was okay and she went to her car and left. Dream continued but nothing happened besides bringing groceries in the middle of the night lol

Hey, I hope everyone's doing well!
Today we return to the namesake of this fic, an actual lesson about animals. This one focuses on Koalas! One of Australia's most recognisable critters. I hope you enjoy.
It's hardly worth mentioning, seeing as I'm an infrequent poster at the best of times, but I'll not have another chapter out for a few weeks due to limited free time and devoting most of my writing time to an upcoming ficnapping. Be sure to look out for that!

Date [Standardised human time]: 8th September 2136
“Koalas!”
Bernard’s energised voice boomed through the air as the classroom's monitor flickered into life, images of this paws lecture topic popping up one after the other until the entire screen was filled with a collage of furry quadrupeds.
Squee! I’ll never get tired of this, it’s all so cool!
As usual the sight of something new stirred immediate discussion, hushed murmurs swelling into vibrant discourse in little more than a heartbeat. Most of the class swiftly huddled together into small herds to bounce ideas around while the rest opted to stick to the solace of their own thoughts as they took in the display.
I’d be quite happy in either situation, though seeing as Sandi had already sunk into deep concentration and Kailo had peeled off to talk with Ennerif and Solenk, it seemed the decision had been made for me on this occasion. Wasting no more time on idle inspection of the people around me, I focused my full attention forward, eager to form first impressions before the lesson began in earnest.
Now then, time to make some educated guesses. What traits does this animal have? I wonder if I’ll get any right this paw?
Professional assumptions went paw-in-paw with the lectures, examining and coming up with hypotheses about the specimens was only natural. Recently however, I’d started to make a little game of it to make things even more interesting than usual. A veritable bonfire of ideas had been set ablaze within me, fueled by my newfound knowledge of Earthen wildlife. Every flash and spark of the flame was a fresh theory I could try to apply to the lectures. It was an invigorating exercise that further stoked my unceasing wonderment.
So far I’d only done this once during the previous class and, to my disappointment, I’d not done too well.
I was right when I guessed that chickens were omnivores, but wrong in my assumption that they could fly. And that red thing on their head, the um… what was it called? The comb! Yes, the comb. I thought that was to attract mates, but it regulates body heat instead. It’s fascinating. Oh! Stars damn it I’m rambling!
I bapped my tail against my leg, the soft thud being just enough to snap me back from my runaway thoughts before I went completely wall-eyed. I was becoming more and more accustomed to getting lost in my own head while remaining conscious of the fact; it was happening so frequently now that it was pretty much impossible not to. Now I was able to pull myself back to the world around me without having to rely on someone else shaking me out of it. Most of the time anyway.
Sandi still keeps an eye on me, and Kailo even decided to help out once without being too snide about it. Anyway where was I? Oh yeah, Koalas.
Glancing at the furred animals, two things immediately stood out. Firstly, their eyes were in a more central position on their face. And second, all the images showed them being on or close to trees. There were other noteworthy observations of course, such as the Koala’s prominent nose and rounded features, but they fell to the wayside as I honed in on these points first.
Hmmm… ok. I already know to discount the idea that they’re predators just from eye position, so let’s get that thought out of here. Maybe omnivorous? Herbivore? Agh no, I can’t just guess that for the sake of guessing, that’s the same problem! Hrm, it’s tough making these assumptions now that everything I thought I knew has been turned on its head.
Nevermind, I’ll focus on the other thing. All the trees make me think they’re arboreal, that seems to be a reasonable assumption. I wonder what else they-
Clearing his throat, Bernard broke my concentration, his call for attention silencing the murmuring conversation and redirecting everyone's focus to the lecturer's podium.
His gaze panned across the room as he waited for everyone to settle, a beaming smile lighting up his face, “As ever I’m delighted to see you all get so into the subject matter from the get go. I’m looking forward to hearing what you were discussing should you wish to share. For now though, how about we get started, hm?”
A chorus of merry bleats rang out from across the audience, ears and tails flicking happily in agreement. Bernard's grin grew in tandem with the class's fervour, clasping his hands together enthusiastically as he launched into the lesson, “Excellent! Then let’s get started.”
The pictures on screen dissolved away until only one remained, enlarging to cover the entire monitor with the fluffy grey face of a Koala peacefully reclining in the crook of a tree.
“Ah, there we are,” Bernard’s baritone timbre drifted through the room as he looked up at the image, his own tone reflecting the relaxed attitude of the animal on screen, “He looks so comfortable doesn’t he? Perfectly at peace with the world, not too surprising considering they sleep almost 20 hours a day. A full paw!”
A wave of beeps and gasps rippled through the herd, punctuated by a single yawn-dressed comment from Rova, “A full paw? Hwuuu… jealous.”
Her drowsy remark elicited several whistling giggles from the herd, Bernard's own jovial chortle joining them as he turned to face her, “Late evening Rova?”
I twisted a little in my seat, panning an eye in Rova’s direction just in time to see her bleary eyes bulge open and her ears shoot up, now intensely aware of the fact she hadn’t been as quiet as she thought she had.
Sitting up abruptly, she hastily tapped down errant tufts of wool that’d flared in surprise as she composed herself, though her nervousness at becoming the centre of the class's attention was still plain for all to hear, “Uh- I um… achem, a little bit yes, um- …sorry. Lokki dragged me out to a movie viewing in the rec centre. It went on pretty late.”
A melodramatic bray from the other side of the room drew everyone's ears away from Rova to the now aghast Lokki, paw splayed across his chest in faux indignation, “Dragged you? Well excuse me for trying to broaden your horizons with human movies. That’ll be the list time I- …Ahaaaa…
Lokki’s theatrics were cut short by a heavy yawn of his own, a swell of whistling laughter rolling through the herd as vibrant bloom lit up his snout, a sight that elicited a particularly amused bleat from Rova.
Turning away from the duo I looked back at Bernard, pleased to see that he was chuckling along with us. Behaviour like Lokki’s would never have been tolerated in my school and university days but, in stark contrast, Bernard revelled in it, the liveliness of his students fueling his own bombastic style of teaching. It was a pleasant change of pace having a teacher who let us all be ourselves in class; provided we weren’t too disruptive to the lesson plan.
Speaking of which.
His laughter still rumbling through the air, Bernard clapped his hands to pull everyone's focus back to him, “Ok, ok, let’s get back to it then shall we? Rova. Lokki. Hopefully the two of you can stay awake long enough until you can grab yourselves a coffee.”
As the class settled down and the last few giggling beeps petered out, Benard pointed a hand to the screen, “So, the Koala. Let’s start simple shall we? They are herbivorous marsupials native to the eastern and southern coasts of Australia. Easily recognised the world over, they are a well known and beloved symbol of their homeland, along with other animals such as the Kangaroo and the Emu. The former of which you might remember from one of our earlier lectures.”
Indeed I did remember, along with how angry Bernard had gotten after some speh-head had derided the Yotul after he explained how he held specific disdain for such attitudes.
Uuuggghh… I never want to see him angry again. So chilling.
I shook my ears in an effort to dismiss the unpleasant memory, panning my eyes back to the monitor to try and distract myself by inspecting the Koala’s physical appearance once more. Thankfully, by some Star's blessed intervention, Bernard had the exact same idea.
“Koala’s are rather squat in stature, ranging around sixty to eighty-five centimetres in length and weighing little more than fifteen to sixteen kilograms at their full size. As you can see, the fur of this fellow before you is a lovely silvery grey, but their fur can also sport a chocolaty brown hue as well. Arguably the most distinctive part of their appearance is their head, being rather large for their body size and having rounded ears, a large nose, and a pair of small eyes. These are often brown but variations do occur.”
It didn’t slip past my notice that Bernard didn’t bother to point out that the Koala’s eyes were forward facing. I didn’t think he’d simply forgotten, so perhaps he just felt it wasn’t necessary given that he’d already stated it was herbivorous. Either way, no one stuck up a paw or tail to question him.
“Now this will hardly be surprising considering how long they sleep, but Koala’s are largely sedentary and it’s rather easy to see why when you have a look into the contents of their diet.”
With the press of a button the Koala on screen was replaced by images of vibrant green vegetation. Soaring trees and flowering shrubbery weaved together across landscape framed pictures pulled admiring trills from the herd, the diversity of the plant life being shown standing as a reminder that it wasn’t only animal life that flourished on Earth.
After giving everyone the chance to take in the picturesque scenes, Bernard casually hammered that point home, “This is eucalyptus or, more accurately, a choice selection of more than 700 plants belonging to the eucalyptus genus, though the Koala itself favours 30 of them in particular.”
700!? Stars…
Realising that my ears had drooped in my momentary awe, I twisted them back to tune into the lesson, only for them to splay out in shock at the next words to come out of Bernard's mouth.
“The leaves of these plants are the primary food source of the Koala and there are a couple things worth mentioning when talking about these plants. For starters they do not have much nutritional or caloric value, leading to the Koala’s low-energy lifestyle. Additionally, they contain toxic compounds.”
A shiver instantly ran through the herd, ears flicking rapidly in confusion and alarm followed by a few quizzical whispers. It didn’t take long for someone to decide to give a proper voice to the murmuring.
“Excuse me Doctor. Did we hear that right? Their diet is made up of toxic flora?” Vlek’s grumbling incredulity cut through the herd's mutterings with ease. Until Kailo’s recent change of heart, the fifty something rotation old blonde Venlil had been a close second in terms of scepticism. Mercifully his rebuttals had always been relevant questions as opposed to ranting diatribes, so he at least remained on topic if nothing else.
Bernard nodded in confirmation, smiling back at Vlek while absentmindedly twirling the end of his moustache, “You heard me right, they do indeed consume plants that are toxic. Just not to them.”
Any worry or uncertainty still clinging to the herd was swept away by the provision of the glaringly obvious answer, leaving me chuckling inwardly at the oversight.
Ah of course! The plant might be poisonous but they’ll have evolved to deal with that. Stars… I’m so used to expecting the unexpected with Earth that I didn’t even consider the simplest solution.
“I see, thank you Doctor,” Vlek replied, a tinge of interest still audible in his tone, “I assume they’ve developed some adaptation to become immune to the harmful effects?”
The question immediately evoked a smirk from our teacher, but he hurriedly suppressed it while bobbing his head, “They have indeed. There are several factors that aid in their digestion of eucalyptus leaves without succumbing to the plant's baleful properties. The first is a part of the intestinal tract called the cecum. It contains a microbiome that allows the Koala to digest the eucalyptus. Coupled with this is an enzyme in the Koala’s liver that helps them break down the toxins. They are also capable of sniffing out the plants with the least amount of toxins, ensuring that they ingest as little as possible.”
Pausing for a breath Bernard looked back at the screen before turning to face us, another grin curling at the edges of his mouth as he continued with his explanation, “This is mostly for adult Koala’s, because while their young also possess these same adaptations, they don’t just go straight to munching through foliage right after being born. No, they need a little help making that jump and getting a stomach full of all that good gut bacteria. It’s nothing bad, but those of a sensitive stomach may wish to prepare themselves for this next part.”
Bernard’s assurances did little to assuage the concern that his warning had foisted upon us. Having been exposed to so much of the weirdness Earth had to offer everyone always ended up on edge whenever Bernard gave advice like this, even if he did say it in jest.
What strange nonsense thing do Koala pups do then? Judging by the way he’s acting it probably isn’t something as simple as drinking milk from the mother. Hmmm…
“So,” Bernard began, snapping us from our pensive stupor, “Young Koala’s, known as joeys, have a gestation period of thirty-five days on average, which is approximately forty-two paws. Once born they travel from the birth canal to a pouch in their mother so that they can continue to develop and grow. In the pouch the joey finds and latches onto one of two teats and these provide the newborn with a steady stream of nourishing milk. It spends the next six to seven months growing in the pouch, its eyes, ears, and fur all developing as time goes on.”
Okay, interesting. But this is exactly how I thought it’d go. What’s different?
The unexpected normalcy of the Koala’s birth and growth cycle had calmed everyone's nerves, only to be replaced with an air of suspicion as we waited with rapt attention for Bernard to drop the other claw and upend our expectations like he always did.
Not wanting to keep us in further suspense he forged ahead, the tempo of his voice picking up as the smile started to crease his face once more, “Now to make the switch from milk to eucalyptus, the mother also feeds the joey a substance called pap. It comes from the cecum I mentioned earlier, and contains all the gut bacteria required to help the young Koala in making the switch to eucalyptus.”
He stopped and looked around, searching us for a reaction to what I felt was a rather bland statement of fact. What was it he was saying without actually saying? Koala pups drink milk to mature and then include this pap substance so that they can start eating plants. I don’t see what-
The cecum is part of the intestine.
I blinked.
I blinked again, the intrusive interruption scouring my brain clean of any other thought bar the one it’d just implanted itself in the forefront of my mind.
Oh stars. They-
“They eat their own poop!?”
The shocked bleat shattered the peace of the room to reveal that most if not all of us had come to the same tail curling conclusion. As the hall filled with unrestrained vocalisations of disgust, an ‘Ugh’ over here and a ‘Blegh’ over there, Bernard’s own bellowing laughter joined the throng of voices.
Ha! Everytime! Each and every time. Clearly it doesn’t matter if my students are Human or Venlil. Whenever someone learns about the Koala’s dietary development the reaction is the same!”
Pleased with himself beyond reason, Bernard chuckled away while the rest of us grappled with this ghastly reality. While there were plenty of animals that feasted on things that ranged from simply unappealing all the way to the stomach churningly grotesque, I’d never heard of an animal that actively consumed the excrement of its own species. Benefits aside, the prospect of having to do that to survive to adulthood sent a shiver of revulsion down my spine.
Ewww… Stars, I hope I forget this feeling by 2nd meal. They’re serving sturen and magamroot stew later. I was really looking forward to it.
With the herds mood beginning to temper Bernard tapped the podiums controls, removing the verdant collage of eucalyptus to display several similar yet distinct environments, still chortling merrily to himself in the process, “Ok then, with that little foray into their diet complete, why don’t we look at their habitat in more detail? As you might imagine given their diet and arboreal nature, Koala’s live in forested regions, and can be found in tropical and temperate zones. About a century ago they were classed as a vulnerable species, however efforts were made to turn this around and increase their numbers. Sadly the largest factor in their decline was human activity, as the fertile lands that gave rise to their bountiful forests were coveted farm land for our settlements.”
It was strange to hear Bernard so matter of factly admit to humanity's negative impacts on other species. He’d alluded to such things in the past but always with an air of caution, carefully pawing the line between honestly answering a question while not painting humanity as uncaring and destructive. AKA, the ‘predators’ we’d all initially expected them to be.
Perhaps his comfort in making such admissions was a reflection of the class's comfort with him, for no one so much as batted an ear. Even Kailo, who I would’ve expected to jump at the chance to use this as a prime example of predatory danger, only flicked an ear in stern yet silent concern.
A cough from Bernard drew my attention back, a new picture on screen that showed a forest from a bird's-eye view. Drawn across the image were around a dozen ringed areas, some bordering one another while others overlapped to some degree. It took me a moment, but I soon recognised that what I was looking at was a map, the rings representing what I assumed to be territories. And it didn’t take much effort to guess who each one belonged to.
“From habitats we move onto behaviours, so let’s start with territories. Koala’s are solitary animals. Yes, despite being herbivores. Considering they’re only awake for roughly four hours of the day I can hardly blame them. Lots to do and not a lot of time to do it. Jokes aside, once they mature they are quite independent, carving out a little slice of land for themselves, as displayed in this example, called a Home Range. That is not to say they go it alone and leave everything else behind however. Rather, as shown in the map behind me, they live in their own space while still being part of a larger social group.”
With another press of his pad the picture was updated to show one of two symbols in each segment, along with a key to the side of the map displayed in helpful Venlang. A quick glance told me that the symbols were representing whether the territory belonged to a male or female of the species.
“As you can see there is quite a bit of overlap between different Koala’s territories. It is in these areas that most of the socialising takes place between neighbours. The trees in these locations represent the few areas where intrusion across territories is acceptable for the sake of social interaction. Outside of that the Koala’s stick to their own territories for the most part, with the exceptions of Koala’s who are passing through, attempting to become part of the social group themselves, or dominant males who sometimes go off into another Koala’s range. But how do they know where one range begins and another range ends you might ask? Well, this brings us onto the next part of the lecture. How do Koala’s communicate?”
Wiping away the map from the monitor, Bernard loaded up a video of a Koala sitting in a tree and pressed play. Head held high, the Koala’s body shook as it belted out a reverberating call into the wilderness that could only be described as a garbled combination of a car engine failing to turn over mixed with the hiccups of someone with a particularly sore throat.
That’s how they sound? Oof that must be rough on the lungs.
I clearly wasn’t the only one to share such a thought, because I clocked Sandi tracing a paw along her neck as the noise went on, ears fluttering in discomfort at the noise.
Bernard himself cleared his own throat as the video came to an end, minimising it and replacing it with another image of a tree with a Koala rubbing up against the bark, “I think they’ve got me beat on who’s got the deeper voice!”
His joke garnered several amused beeps, a rare reaction that caused a beaming smile to shine across his face at lighting speed, “Oh you’re too kind. I’ll be here all week. Now where were we? Oh yes! Communication. As you’ve just heard, Koala’s are capable of loud low pitched bellows that can carry over vast distances. These express everything from ‘Hello I’m over here’ to ‘This is my turf, stay away’. Bellowing is more common in the males than the females, opting for shouting matches as opposed to outright fights when it comes to asserting dominance. Other vocal expressions include grunts, wails, and snarls if they’re acting particularly angsty. Mother and joey pairs also communicate through gentle clicking, squeaking, and murmuring sounds. And there’s one more thing worth mentioning. Something they have in common with Humans and Venlil when it comes to emoting.”
Really? They do something we do?
Curious, I pressed myself against the desk, straining as close as I could to once more scrutinise the Koala’s features. Not a lot stood out to me at first, the grey marsupial not sharing many similarities with a Venlil that I could identify.
Ok think. We show emotion with our ears, tails, and our wool on occasion. They don’t have tails so it’s obviously not that. Wool standing on end is more a reaction than a conscious expression. So it must be the ears then.
To my quiet satisfaction, my hunch was soon validated by Bernard, “As well as their vocalisations, Koala’s are very emotive through their facial features. Just like humans, they use their mouths and lips to show how they feel, but these tend more towards the aggressive side of the scale than what you might see on a human. Regarding yourselves however, Koala’s utilise their ears in tandem with their mouth movements when showing strong emotion.”
I was delighted to hear that my assumption was correct, a little happy flick twisting out through my tail and bapping against my chair with a muted thump against the plastic.
Hehe yes! Got one right!
“Now then, we are getting close to lunchtime so I’ll finish this segment off with something I think you’ll find particularly interesting. Diplomacy.”
Perplexed mutterings followed in the wake of the bizarre inclusion to the lecture, my own thoughts being dominated by bewilderment as I tried and failed to make sense of how the two could possibly be related.
Why would Koala’s, or any animal for that matter, be linked to diplomacy? Hmmm...
I could understand dispatching exterminators to deal with a predator issue as a show of goodwill, that at least includes animals, but Humans aren’t like that so I think I can safely scratch that off the list.
Maybe the humans who live in that region benefited from Koala’s in some way. Could they have gotten something from them? But what?
Hopefully not what the pups get from their mothers.
Agh no! Begone awful intrusive thoughts. Blegh! I don’t need that in my head.
As I wrestled with the short-lived revulsion inflicted upon me by my Star's damned subconscious, Bernard placed a new image on screen, one that was decidedly different from all that had preceded it.
On screen were more than a couple dozen pictures of humans. Some were pictured alone while others congregated in large groups while cameras surrounded them from all angles. Across all the images, I noted two common themes. First of all, a solid majority of the humans were wearing formal wear similar to what I’d seen worn by UN representatives on TV. If the gaggle of journalists in the background of the photos didn’t already confirm my suspicions, then it was this similarity which made me conclude they were all people of some importance. Likely politicians judging from context clues.
Secondly, each of the individuals was interacting with a Koala in some form. Some cradled one against their chests while others were feeding it eucalyptus leaves or pellets of some kind. One of the assumed politicians had become an impromptu bed for a snoozing bundle of fur, a gleeful smile spread across their face as they lovingly gazed down at the sleeping Koala in their lap.
As I continued to stare at the assorted photos something clicked into place, a sudden spark flickering into life. A burgeoning light of comprehension that flared and swelled with every wide-eyed breath I took. Some things still escaped me, things I hoped would soon be explained, but in staring at all of the humans happy smiling faces, I was struck with an instant of pure understanding.
If someone, say a Nevok for instance, offered to gift me a creature that was common to them but which might exotic and breathtaking to a Venlil, how could my feelings not be swayed? How could I walk away from that encounter and not have grown closer to them as a result?
“Koala diplomacy,” Bernard waved his hand up at the monitor, a slight reverence in his tone, “My favourite kind of soft power diplomacy. Where political leaders take photo ops with Koala’s and, on occasion, the Australian government loans Koala’s to other nations for a time to bolster positive relations. It certainly helps that Koala’s are a beloved animal worldwide, drawing large crowds and revenue for countries fortunate enough to host the adorable critters.”
The truly alien concept predictably sparked instant discussion in the herd, two polar opposite schools of thought swiftly cementing themselves as the most popular opinions. Simultaneously, I heard one voice trill excitedly while another scoffed at what they clearly saw as a ridiculous and offensive notion.
Squee! That’d be so cool! I’d love to get the chance to see a Liri from Coila. Remember the Rainbow Boa? Think of that shimmering effect and colour but put it on a bird! Ah! I’ve only heard their song on video. It’d be a treat to hear it in person!”
Ooo! I’ve read about them! I’d love to get up close to one.
Loaning. As if animals are property to be hoarded and traded? Pugh! Another predatory trait the humans don’t want to acknowledge for what it is.”
Ugh, typical. Jump right to the worst possible option.
However, despite my dismissal of their disparaging fumings, an uncomfortable thought pressed upon my mind. While it was plain to see how much humans cared for the Koala, it didn’t change the fact that humans did keep animals as property just as the scornful herd member had said.
This begged a rather important, disquieting question. Aside from keeping some animals as cattle, a stomach tightening minefield I had no desire to step a claw onto right now, how else did humans keep other creatures. And how did they treat them?
Before I was fully conscious of doing it my paw was in the air, the question primed on my tongue.
Noticing my elevated paw Bernard pointed at me, smiling warmly, “Yes Rysel? What’s on your mind?”
Sorry Bernard. I hope this one’s not too awkward for you to answer.
Flicking my ear in appreciation, and waiting for everyone to settle enough so that I could be heard, I voiced my concerns as neutrally as possible, “Thank you Doctor. I uh, just had a thought. We know that humans keep certain animals for… particular reasons, and we know why. From how you’ve spoken about Koala’s I think it's fair to say that the same cannot be said for them. However, this makes me wonder, what other reasons do humans have for keeping animals and how do you treat them?”
A flash of surprise blinked across Bernard's eyes but vanished so quickly that it felt like I’d imagined it. Had he not expected such a question? Maybe he was just shocked that it’d been me who’d ended up asking it?
Stars, am I so predictable that no one expects me to ask difficult questions?
Unfortunately, a quick glance at my deskmates seemed to prove that to be the case, as both Sandi and Kailo were looking at me with differing degrees of astonishment flapping in their ears.
Well speh.
“A very good point Rysel, certainly one that’s worth raising. Yet another example of you all anticipating what I have to say before I can bring it up myself.” Bernard tapped the podium, switching off the monitor before returning his focus to me, “We won’t be needing that. I’ve nothing prepared that I can show you and we’re heading to lunch in a few minutes anyway. Still, that’s plenty of time to give you a bit of an answer.”
A bit? What does he mean just a bit?
Made even more curious by Bernard's preempted admission that he wasn’t going to fully answer my query, I dialled both my ears on him, fixing him with an inquisitive stare as he started to explain with a tone that was noticeably more nonchalant than any of his previous explanations.
“So, animals in captivity for reasons other than what you already know. Honestly I would love to delve into other reasons regarding why we keep animals. However, I have a lesson plan in the works that I hope to share with you all in the not too distant future. Some of it touches upon this very topic and I’d quite like to bundle it all together. That said, I can tell you how animals in captivity are treated. In short, the answer is very well. There are a mountain of laws both on private and public interests that govern the standards and ethical treatment of animals, and breaches of these laws are quite severe even for relatively minor infractions.”
While I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed by the vague answer to what was really the bulk of my question, I was at least satisfied by Bernard’s assurances that animals in captivity, such as the Koala, were well looked after. Considering the barely subdued grumbling coming from some corners of the audience it was clear that several of the herd didn’t believe Bernard outright, but I trusted him to be honest. Additionally, the mention of an upcoming lecture focused on humans keeping animals caused quite the buzz.
I felt a mix of excitement and trepidation at exploring the topic further. He’d pretty much confirmed we wouldn’t be talking about cattle farms, for which I was relieved, but that still left a huge amount of uncertainty in what was to come.
Humans keeping animals as cattle was a forgone conclusion. As horrifying as that reality was, it was one I could understand from a detached and strictly clinical point of view. Being predators they ate meat and therefore they kept cattle. But the concept of keeping animals for any other reason baffled me.
What could be the purpose? The diplomacy thing makes sense now that I have context, but what other reasons could they have.
The class's discussions were interrupted by the recognisable ring of the break bell, the shift in attention eliciting a change in conversation from confused hypotheses to peppy conversation on how everyone was planning to spend their break and what they had in mind for 2nd meal.
“Well I can see everyone’s excited for lunch, and who am I to disappoint,” chuckling Bernard waved us all up from our seats, pocketing his pad from the podium and heading to open the classroom door for us, “Enjoy your break, get a good rest along with a hearty meal, and I’ll see you all back here at the usual time.”
As everyone else filed out I stayed behind, waving at Sandi and Kailo as they left, and pawing over to Bernard once he and I were the only ones left in the room.
Ears folded down and with an apologetic tinge in my voice I greeted him as I sidled up to him, “Hey Bernard, I uh… sorry if that last question was unexpected.”
Chortling in reply, Bernard waved a hand through the air in a sign I’d come to understand meant ‘not a problem’.
“No need to apologise Rysel. It was a good question and most certainly not a problem.”
Heh, called it.
I sighed, allowing tension I didn’t realise I’d been holding to relax itself from my shoulders, “Phew, that’s a relief. I’m glad. I’m curious to hear what this new lesson is you’ve got in store for us by the way.”
Bernard wagged a finger at me, throwing up his eyebrows in mock amazement, “Oh are you now? Well I’m afraid you’ll have to remain curious for the time being. It’s going to be quite the surprise if all goes to plan. But…”
He trailed off, glancing at me before looking to the door like he was making sure no one else was around.
Wait, is he going to tell me? Oh please yes let me know now!
Stopping myself from jumping on the spot in excited anticipation, and trying my damndest to stop my tail from wagging in equal measure, I stared up at Bernard as he stewed in his thoughts before turning back to face me.
“I can’t tell you the specifics, but I’m working with Alejandro and Tolim to get something together. A trip that’s not a trip as it were. And when it happens, I’m going to need a few of the more accepting members of the class to lend me a hand. I’m hoping you and a couple others will be able to help with that?”
A trip that’s not a trip? What does that mean? Agh who cares about that right now! Bernard’s relying on me to help out!
Still trying not to keep myself from bouncing around with pup like glee I swished my tail and nodded my head in joint agreement, happy to help with whatever Bernard had in store for us, “Of course! Anything you need I’ll be there to lend a paw. You can count on me!”
A broad warm smile lit up Bernard's face, a hand patting me on the shoulder in appreciation, “Thank you Rysel. I knew I could rely on you but it still warms my heart to hear it. And, as thanks for this and for the many times you’ve shown your support, the surprise includes a little something special I think you’d appreciate the most.”
If my earlier enthusiasm had been at a nine, then the implication of a supposed gift sent it rocketing all the way to a hundred in a heartbeat.
“Wait… WHAT!? What do you mean? What are you doing?
As impossible as it seemed, Bernard's grin grew even wider as I almost lost myself in wool shaking exhilaration, “Call it my own form of Koala diplomacy. But I’m afraid that’s all I can say for now. Wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise even for you!”
“Oh you ass!” Whistling jovially I bapped my tail against Bernard’s leg in fake indignation, evoking a barking bellowing laugh from the man himself.
Still laughing, the two of us departed the class and made for the canteen, my rumbling stomach leading me on while my mind spun with fantastical thoughts as to what Bernard had prepared for us.
And what specifically he had in store for me.
