2024.05.22 00:21 n00bdragon 3e Spell Thresholds for Manipulation spells (why?) (houserules/homebrew) [long/math]

So, I'm in between 3e campaigns at the moment as I gear up for the next one I'm considering some house rule changes and a player asked me why Manipulation spells are so impossible to use because of the Threshold requirement. Doing some research into it, yeah, I think there's a problem here and I'm open to just straight up removing thresholds from most of the Manipulation spells in SR3 and MITS. But they seem so deliberately tacked on there I can't help but wonder: Why were they put there in the first place? I'm generally keen to respect Chesterton's Fence, so I want to figure out what the designers were thinking when they put these in here before I remove it.
Some background So this is a general problem with opposed rolls in 3e, but opposed rolls become very silly instantly if you do anything but roll 4 or 5 dice against 4 or 5 dice. Consider the following probabilities of one pool size vs another:
Some basic statistics for opposed checks in the raw. These are your odds of success (net successes > 0) when you have the number of dice in the top row and your opponent has the number of dice in the given column.

Already, there's some really alarming stuff in here, like a single die on one side of the equation changing the success chances by 40% or more. But what if we randomly inserted a requirement that the attacker achieve a number of successes equal to half the pool size of the defender. To help the attacker out, I'll also simulate him getting more dice because he does have Spell Pool after all.
Also, let's assume the spell is Force 5 Alter Memory for now, but as I'll explain later this matters less than you might imagine.

There's some pretty wild stuff going on here right at the lines where the threshold comes into play. At 3 Willpower, resisting the spell is virtually impossible. The Force of the spell doesn't actually matter all that much here. The problem is that the spellcaster is rolling a pile of dice larger than your raw unaided attribute against a TN much lower than the Force probably is and only needs a single net success (which they needed anyway to just to cast the spell). Once you hit 4 Willpower, suddenly, not only does the caster need yet another success, but the fraction of his pile that is counting successes has reduced from 66 to 50%. 4s and 5s is clearly the sweet spot that I think the designers tested with the most. The variance here isn't too bad. There are reasonable chances of success and resistance all around.
However, once you hit that critical threshold of 6 Willpower, everything goes to hell. Casting spells becomes impossible. Going from Willpower 5 to 6 cuts the attacker's successes in half and requires them to get yet another net success. Here's where I point out that if Harlequin himself popped up and slapped your Willpower 6 character right out of chargen with a Force 8 Alter Memory and threw 20 dice at it... he'd only have a 49% chance of success. We've only been talking about Willpower so far, but all of the above basically means that Manipulation spells going against Body do not work on Orks and Trolls, full stop.
So it brings me to my thread question. What are Thresholds for, exactly? They don't even matter for targets with attributes of 1 to 3. They make things a bit easier for the defender in the 4 to 5 range, perhaps important given that these are spells which can turn you into a newt or make you shoot yourself in the face, but they become absolutely prohibitive against attributes of 6+. Why not get rid of them altogether? Or, if they must be kept to help out the defender, why not make them uniform? Why not make it so that the attacker always needs two net successes, regardless of the defender's scores? The defender's score is already relevant in setting the TN.
My suspicion is that the designers started out with spells like Ignite which go against a static TN under the theory that being really tough doesn't stop me from agitating the molecules on your body, but the Threshold was there to make it so tougher characters could still benefit from that toughness. Elemental manipulations are already kinda in that vein. They roll against static TNs but you get to resist them like normal ranged attacks (being tough doesn't negate the fire I'm shooting at you, it just keeps the fire I made from causing you harm). Somewhere along the way though the static TNs got tossed out and replaced with standard resistance rolls but the Thresholds stuck around.
Is this general understanding correct? Has anyone else puzzled over this or houseruled it?

Note: Please don't take this as anything more than some guy just trying to share the info he furiously jotted down when completing some onslaught today haha. I'm hoping we can get a more definitive answer on what the "boosted loot" actually means & I'm just trying to help with that!

Overall: It's only 2 runs. I'm human and may have missed things when tabbing to track. Take the Chest Drops with a grain of salt, unless it's confirmed there's a chance to get 2 extra from either the 30/40/50 chests. But the tokens were consistent, when considering the notes (bounties/bonus rounds)
Curious to see other's figures so we can find the new best method to farm shinys! GL everyone!

For me, it's:

After the first decade or so, time starts being more amorphous and operating on some cross between a timeline that develops and a stationary Simpsons-like timeline where time doesn't really move. Some things progress, some things don't, everything is kept vague, and characters don't notice or call attention to this. Essentially, large amounts of time are zipped into small amounts of time, and both the longer and shorter time intervals between events are "correct" depending on how much we're zooming in on the timeline. For example, Kyle Rayner had a good number of years as a solo Green Lantern and Tim Drake was Robin for a solid amount of time before Hal Jordan returned and Damian Wayne showed up, but somehow, superheroes in general have only been operating for about 10 to 15 years, max. This is really the only way you can keep Batman perpetually in his 30s or 40s without having weird consequences like each Robin only holding the title for a year before he gets a new one.
So after this, I stop having specific "years" and it becomes more like "periods of time in which certain things co-occur." So there might be considerable time intervals between events, yet those events might also paradoxically be squished into some 10-15-year timeline.

The Infinite Crisis Era
The Final Crisis Era
There are things I'm on the fence on, such as whether the Golden Age heroes are part of this timeline. On the one hand, I like the idea of Superman being the world's very first superhero and the public never having had encountered anything fantastical until his debut. If the JSA existed before him, then his debut would be met with "hey look, I guess flying men are back" instead of "can you BELIEVE a man can fly?!" Batman's debut also seems more striking if Gotham was never patrolled by a Green Lantern (that guy probably would have single-handedly demolished Gotham's mob in the '40s instead of letting it grow to the size it would later become).
On the other hand, I wouldn't want to jettison the cool relationships that exist between the Golden Age and later characters, like Kyle Rayner knowing Jade. I think I lean toward "keep them on Earth-2, but allow them to have regular meetings and friendships with the Earth-0 guys." But if the walls between universes are that porous, that just raises the question of why Power Girl got stuck on Earth-0 when the rest of the Earth-2 people can go home whenever they want.

2024.05.22 00:15 PhoenixorFlame LF Fics I’ve Read Where These Things Happen

I’ve read a stupid amount of JAFF and it’s all getting jumbled up in my head. Could y’all help me figure out which fics these things happen in? I have no idea if they even happened in the same story or not. These are all random scenes that pop up in my head every once in a while.
  1. Mr. Bingley is awful and patronizes a place called the Hellfire Club. Lizzy makes Mr. Darcy promise to reunite Bingley with Jane while at Pemberley, but Jane is secretly done with him and is courted by another man. A Mr. Abel? Mr. Amell? Something like that. Mr. Bingley gets the French disease and dies.
  2. Mrs. Bennet gives a helpful “wedding night talk” to Lizzy, separately from Jane because Lizzy and Lydia are more like her. Mrs. B says that they are “warm.” I remember that bit vividly.
  3. Lizzy and Georgina sneak away to help save Lydia and do some gambling. To win information I think? It’s all very dramatic and I think Mr. Bingley ends up killing someone. Jane comforts him once they return to either Pemberley or Darcy House. There is definitely a scene where they arrange bodies in the pub or wherever they were at to evade the authorities. Colonel Fitzwilliam is there too.
  4. Wickham imposed himself on Georgiana and she isn’t doing well. At all. I think she also had the French disease. Maybe she is given mercury? I think upon meeting Georgie, Lizzy berates Mr. Darcy for not telling her that his sister was “half mad.” Georgie is very childlike and her mind is affected. I do not think she gets better, unlike the Georgie in Fate and Consequences. I think that George Wickham attacks them while they’re having a tea party in the garden or something of the sort.
  5. Mrs. Bennet is awful to Lizzy and insists she wear an ugly, uncomfortable bonnet during the double wedding. They try to leave the bonnet at Longbourne after the wedding, but Mrs. B comes running with it and won’t let them leave it. Mr. Darcy snatches it and tosses it into the carriage.
  6. Mary somehow marries George Wickham. He is reformed, I think. Everyone was very surprised.
  7. I think this is a rather long one where Georgiana marries a guy called Jonah Somerset. He might be titled. I don’t remember.
  8. One of the Gardner boys is injured protecting the ladies from…something. He and Mr. Darcy get along very well and there’s this really cute scene where they talk about something like being on a court under a gauge. The kid misheard words like courtship and engagement.
  9. Post marriage, Lizzy is angry at Mr. Darcy for assuming she didn’t know how to do the household accounts. He is very condescending and tells her to ask when she doesn’t understand something, and she is not pleased. He doesn’t get why. Then he actually looks at what she’s been doing and realizes she improved the system he had been previously using. He grovels.
  10. Mr. Darcy (maybe), Mr. Bingley, and Jane take Lydia to a brothel to show her the life she would’ve had if George Wickham had succeeded. Jane is in a disguise. She might be wearing a pillow to feign pregnancy. One of the ladies has a talk with Lydia about the frank realities of her situation and Lydia finally gets it. She breaks down in tears. Jane comfort her on the carriage ride back.
  11. Jane marries Mr. Collins. I have no recollection of why. I think he dies. Mr. Bingley vows to win her. I think the story ends before that happens though.
  12. It might’ve been their first meeting but I’m not sure. Lizzy and Georgiana are in the library while Mr. Darcy talks to someone. Lizzy goes through the shelves and pulls some of the books out of alignment. Mr. Darcy absentmindedly fixes them. Lizzy whispers conspiratorially to Georgie that she’s just doing enough to keep him occupied or something. They giggle. I always thought that scene was cute but I have no idea where it’s from.
If someone recognizes one of these scenes/plotpoints and could point me in the right direction, I’d be eternally grateful! These are really bugging me.

My company upgraded me from a 16" M2 Max to a 14" M3 Max (unbinned 16/40 cores) and my SD generations (same pictures for testing) have not improved (they're the same or slower). I am using torch==2.1.2 nightly with MPS support and have applied all the recommended tricks on both machines, in any case: they're exactly the same performance:

2024.05.22 00:11 JUULfiendFortnite Sometimes your squad holds you back — Reached purple plate on multiple builds within 1st week of Season 7 after leaving them for good

I’ve been infamous on this subreddit for saying that plate colors don’t mean anything. I have confirmed this.
A few weeks ago, I posted in here about how my squad was telling me I needed to play passively and absolutely lighting me up for being the primary ball handler AND being the main scorer. You can find that post in my post history.
Well I reconciled with them and adjusted my playstyle to play off the ball. I struggled with my new role I’m ngl, but with our former PF now running PG we simply were not winning any games. That being said, I eventually came around and found my new role. But it was definitely a lesser role, and this team was struggling to win games.
There was a game where I didn’t take a shot in the first half, and I called it out at halftime. In the second half I dropped 18 points including hitting 8 shots in a row. My team was chirping me about being selfish with the ball, but I played a huge role in bringing us back from being down 22 to within 1 basket. Then I missed a layup.
We ended up losing that game as my team imploded after I missed that layup. I got yelled at for the next 12 minutes about missing this layup despite apologizing immediately, and apologizing again when it was brought back up. I kept getting yelled at into the second quarter of the next game where we were obviously getting blown out. At this point I argued back stating I wasn’t having the conversation and just to hoop. I got yelled at more for this, stating I wasn’t taking accountability and how I wasn’t a tough guy (on a virtual game no less). Then our C stood in the paint and quit. I left my squad of 3 years for good after this. This was at the end of Season 7.
In the meantime, I’d been playing some games with some dudes with good vibes I actually met on that aforementioned post. We won games and all move the ball around. Somebody misses? Nbd shoot again. Somebody having a bad game? Nbd we will figure it out. Buncha laughing and having fun and WINNING.
I now win 82% of my games, averaging 21/3/7 on the best shooting splits of my 2k career. Every game is fun. The guys I left? The main ones winning 27%, and 36% of their games respectively. I don’t know about the big who yelled at me because he blocked me on 2k and PS App.
I am now deep into purple on multiple builds, after not touching it at all for the first 6 seasons.
In my case, I was being held back by a toxic team. But I’m still the same player. Just not constantly blamed for losing with lineups that feature zero defenders, two non-shooters, and a buncha guys who can’t create off the dribble.
Be careful before you judge somebody based on plate color. They could just be in my shoes.

I have fixed the card thing and the next billing is in a few days but my wonder is, cause I cant seem to find an answer to this, Do i still get to use my benefits for having 12 months active before hand? or does it start back at the beginning and I lose my 20% discount?

Our friend group got together and decided they would book us at an axe throwing place last Saturday. I was not into it, until I started doing it, out of 12 people me and my wife's best friend really were good at it, she actually beat me by one point for the night! The dude asked the 2 of us if we want to join the league, but it's 40 minutes away and can't swing it.
Long story short, bought a large target, a couple of axes and some throwing knives. I've got a large property with options, one of which is a shed we're not in love with. I'm was thinking of mounting it to the side. Any suggestions on protecting the shed wall from missed throws? Thanks.

2024.05.22 00:08 Iyzrd Strapless vs half vs tank binders, pros and cons? Need help!

I’ve been binding on and off for a couple years now, but only (“professionally”—we’ll get to that in a moment) with a half binder. I absolutely hate it, every second of it, but it’s really the only thing that keeps my dysphoria in check. Besides dark colored hoodies. Obviously, now that the dog days are here, I can’t live in a black heavy hoodie.
Before I was out to my parents, I used to use this piece of fleece I hot glued together in a circle that roughly fit my torso, to bind…Effectively making a strapless binder. I used to be able to wear this for several hours at a time, and when I didn’t need it, I would wear it around my waist (with a shirt over) because i couldn’t get it off without fear of ripping it. This actually binded quite well with very minimum discomfort.
But, I recently discovered professionally made strapless binders. I couldn’t find any in depth reviews about them, because I think they’re a pretty new (or at least unheard of) thing. I would figure, since my “invention” was pretty comfortable, would those be too?
But, this summer is going to be a record breaking one. In terms of heat, especially down south where I am. So, I would prefer not having to wear a binder on top of a shirt. That’s where the tank binder comes in; plus, I’ve heard secondhand they’re much more comfortable than half binders. And, I’d imagine they would bind better.
If I am going to buy a new binder, whether it’s a tank or strapless, I need recommendations. I’ve been beating the life out of my Fytist one, and that’s the only one I’ve liked. I’ve only ever used Fytist and GC2B (Post quality decline), which just about broke my ribs because they gave me a size wayyy too small…yes I measured, it’s too small. I’m already small! No clue how they gave me clothing that doesn’t fit me.
TLDR: can someone go over the pros and cons of the three different types of binders I listed above? Thank you ^

My LO is 10.5 months old and since about 9 months he has been rapidly decreasing his formula / breast milk intake. We always offer him a bottle before solids but sometimes he will straight up refuse it until we give him solids instead. He does still enjoy nursing, but my supply is low since I don't pump so it's unlikely he gets more than 1 - 3 oz. He currently drinks about 10 - 12oz if formula so combined with nursing I'd estimate he's getting 11 - 15 oz.
Now I know the AAP recommendation is that formula or breast milk should be their main source of nutrition until a year. However I also know there's no magic switch that goes off at 12 months where suddenly it's ok for a baby to mostly eat solids, and that the transition is gradual.
So this brings me to my question: are there actually any negative outcomes if a baby self-weans before 12 months? It seems to me that the 12 month recommendation is on the conservative side to ensure people aren't forcibly weaning their babies too early. But if you're continuing to offer formula/bm first, and your baby is eating a lot of solids, does it matter if they wean themselves by 10 - 11 months?

I guess I can't do estrogen. Multiple times I tried and as soon as my testosterone crashes in a week my head feels like it's going to explode like I'm on a bad drug trip and I can't leave my home. This was doing 2mg a day gel monotherapy split up to 4 doses and another time trying 4mg mono pills. I'm insanely sensitive to it. I actually grew a small breast cyst from this in a week from the hormone fluctuation hitting me so hard. I also tried 2mg mono no blocker and I just end up feeling shaky and scatterbrained until I change something up or down. I don't get it at all. my boy, lester, is over a year and a half now, and ive noticed some things that could be aging, but i wanna make sure! we're trying to schedule a vet appointment right now too, but im still nervous
he's a lot less active than he used to be, he doesn't come out of his hide a lot, it takes some coaxing to get him to come out of the cage, and he used to be more skittish and anxious but he's calmed down so much and warmed up to me more in a pretty short time, he seems a bit tired
when I weighed him and his brother some months ago, his brother was about 500 grams, and Lester was about 700. they've always had a significant size difference, they had the same diet and exercise, and they had the same body shape and frame, lester was just sized up, I never thought he was overweight. today I weighed them again, lester is about 550 grams, and his brother is about 500 still. he doesn't seem to be like, on-his-death-bed-thin, but he's definitely thinner than he used to be
he also has increased porphyrin secretion! around his nose, everyday for a week or two, there's been a bit of that reddish brown stuff. it seemed like all of this happened so fast, and it worries me a lot but im trying to believe it's just because he's getting old, and he's not in pain or anything. there's been no changes in his diet, or his bedding or cage or environment, everything's the same:(

Is this busy enough?
Syrian hammy. Tub measures 20x40, 800sq/inch. Bedding on approximately half of the cage is 10-12”. Water bowl and bottle, sand, miscellaneous toys and sticks. Wheel is comfortably sized and he uses it all the time.
I always provide generous of fresh vegetation as well as an assortment of sticks and rocks and natural type things.
Thought of having more hides, but he burrows pretty well and seems to enjoy that over a hide.
Just want to be sure I’m providing a comfortable home for my two kids’ little pet. He is always seeming like he wants to escape so I’m just trying to make sure I’m giving him what he needs.
