2024.05.08 01:06 easy_breeze5634 Ingesting hundreds of csv files, loading them into a knowledge graph (RAG) then use LLM chatbot to query

I want to ingest hundreds of csv files, all the column data is different except for them sharing a similar column related to state. So I am able to capture the location of the data observations and relate them to other data. The data is mostly pertaining to demographics like economics, age, race, income, education, and health related outcomes. I need a general way to ingest all these csv files and load them into a knowledge graph, then use OpenAI to send a cypher query to the knowledge graph to gain context of the user's question and then return an answer. A question might be "What is the highest mortality rate in the country and what might be causing this?" or "Tell me counties with the lowest morbidity rates and why they might be lower than average". I was thinking I could use vector embeddings as well for matching columns together and clustering the data. Im just wondering what the best way to construct the graph will be so that the LLM can easily traverse it and get the correct information back to the user. What is the best way to set all this up? Does it make sense to construct a knowledge graph here so that LLM has context.
Could use advice on how to set something up like this.
Thanks

2024.05.08 00:39 Shoddy_Ad_3435 SCANDAL, MY HUSBAND CAUGHT ME IN THE FULL ACT

SCANDAL, MY HUSBAND CAUGHT ME IN THE FULL ACT

Moment
I was in my room with him. Music played in the background, creating a relaxed atmosphere that sounded in every corner. There was no need for words, our eyes met; The timing was perfect, nothing could go wrong.

The atmosphere was full of passion, and I was enjoying it to the fullest. He knew how to please a woman, on the contrary, my husband looked at me less and less.

He knew how to make me feel good, how to push me to the limit and beyond. His hands explored with confidence, finding every sensitive point, every little detail that made me fly with pleasure. And I let myself go, completely surrendering to the whirlwind of sensations that he awakened in me.

The chemistry between us was palpable, there was something that lit the fire of passion every time we met. There was no room for shyness or games; We were two people who loved each other without reservation, without inhibitions.

And so, between moments of passion and whispers, between caresses and kisses, we were in a world apart, where only he and I existed. We were having an amazing time, as if the entire universe had been put on pause to allow us to enjoy this fleeting moment.

But then, I heard footsteps approaching. At first, I thought it was just my imagination playing tricks on me, but I soon realized it was real. Someone was approaching the room.

Panic took over me in an instant. Who could it be? My husband? I knew my husband was working, so who else could it be? My mind clouded, and before I could even formulate a word, the door burst open.

My worst nightmare came true at that exact moment. Standing at the door, with an expression that combined surprise, anger and pain, was my husband. The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the rapid beating of my heart and his labored breathing.

Our eyes met in an instant, and I knew there was no turning back. There was no way to explain what he was seeing, what he was witnessing at that moment. The words stuck in my throat, unable to come out.

He did not remain silent. He erupted into unbridled fury. He yelled, cursed, and threw accusations in every direction, like an erupting volcano releasing all of his pent-up anger. The insults throughout the house, while I felt trapped in the middle of a storm that I had generated myself.

The screams and insults continued. I didn't know what to do, how to react. I tried to talk to calm the situation, to explain what had happened, but there was no justification for what had just happened, my husband had seen it with his own eyes.

For a moment, everything felt like it was in slow motion. Every word, every moment, was amplified, as if I were watching the scene in a movie, rather than experiencing it in reality. I could see the pain in my husband's eyes, the betrayal etched on his face, I felt guilty at that moment.

I tried to apologize, to explain that it was a mistake, that I was just carried away by the moment, but my words were lost in the chaos in the room. I didn't know what to do, how to fix what I had done, and I felt helpless in the face of the situation.

My husband started hitting my lover. Without saying a word, he lunged at him with the ferocity of a wounded animal. Knocks sounded in the room, each impact a part of the anger that had been unleashed in that moment.

I tried to separate them, screaming desperately as I tried to stop the fight. But it was like he was fighting an unstoppable force. My hands tried to find some point of support, some loophole of control in the midst of the chaos, but everything was useless.

We found ourselves on the ground, locked in a desperate struggle. My lover struggled to defend himself, but he was clearly outmatched by my husband, whose fury seemed to know no limits. The furniture swayed, tears and screams filled the house, but everything blurred before my eyes as I struggled to stop the fight.

I felt fear and helplessness over me. I couldn't believe this was happening, that everything had gotten so completely out of control. My efforts to separate them were in vain, and I realized that I could not stop my husband's fury.

In the midst of the chaos and violence, I realized that I was to blame for everything. It had been my decision, my choice that had brought us to this moment. I felt guilty, I stopped crying, while I observed the result of my infidelity.

My lover got up, staggering, and ran away as best he could, wearing only his underwear. His figure disappeared through the door, leaving me alone with my husband and the overwhelming weight of the moment. I felt paralyzed with fear, not knowing what to expect from my husband's reaction.

He looked at me with eyes full of pain and disappointment, and I knew he was about to face the anger that had been burning inside him. I trembled at the thought of what would come next, of the hurtful words, and the resentful gestures that would surely come from him.

There was only silence between us, thick and heavy, as he processed what had just happened. I could feel his look of disappointment on me, like a silent judgment that pierced me to the depths of my being. I felt naked, exposed before his gaze, unable to hide the truth that was reflected in my eyes.

I didn't know how I was going to react, what I was going to say or do. All I could do was wait, shaking with fear and anticipation of what was to come. Time seemed to stop, as if we were trapped in a horror movie, waiting for the inevitable explosion that would break the relationship between us.

My husband broke the silence with a roar of fury. His words were hurtful. He accused me of betrayal, of destroying our relationship, of not valuing our marriage as if it were worthless.

I tried to defend myself, I tried to explain, but my words were drowned out by his screams. He treated me like I was less than trash, like all my past good deeds were reduced to this single moment of mistake. Each insult was like a physical blow, making me take a step back with every word that came out of his mouth.

My tears mixed with the pain in my voice as he tried to find the right words to calm his anger, but it was like screaming in the middle of a hurricane. There was no way to make me listen, to make him understand that what had happened wasn't just my fault, that it was just a mistake.

"I can't believe you did this!" —My husband roared, his voice echoing through the room like thunder. His gaze burned with fury, accusing me with every inch of his body. How could you be so selfish? After everything we've been through together!

I tried to speak, to find the right words to calm his anger, but every attempt was interrupted by his loud screams.

—You are trash, a traitor! He continued, his words cutting like blades. Do you think this is just a game? You destroyed our life, our family!

Tears burned in my eyes, but I couldn't hold them back, as he continued to take out his anger on me. I tried to apologize, I tried to explain, but my words were lost in the chaos in the room.

"There are no excuses for what you've done," he said, his tone cold. I can't trust you anymore. I want you to leave this house, right now.

His verdict sounded like a punch to the gut. I felt stunned, overwhelmed by the magnitude of what had just happened. I couldn't believe that he was kicking me out of the house, that everything we had built together was falling apart in the blink of an eye.

My hands shook, as he gathered my things, while he looked at me in silence, his expression of contempt. There were no tears in his eyes, just a mixture of pain and disappointment that only made me feel more guilty.

I felt like an idiot closing the front door. The sound rang in my ears like an echo of my own stupidity. How had he gotten to this point? How had I let one moment of pleasure with my lover destroy my entire life?

Regret hit me, as I walked down the street, tears blurring my vision and the weight of my loneliness crushing my chest. He had lost everything because of a moment of weakness, because of an impulsive decision that he should never have made.

I had nowhere to go. My lover lived with his wife, and I couldn't go to her house to take refuge. I felt lost, not knowing what to do, not knowing what to do or where to go. How could he move forward after what he had done? How could I look my husband in the eyes again after betraying him like that?

I was faced with the harsh reality: I had made a serious mistake. What started as an affair had set off a series of events that had destroyed my life. My tears mixed with regret, as I recognized my mistake, as I accepted the magnitude of the damage I had caused.

Despite the pain and despair I had, I tried to stay positive. I wanted to make things right, I wanted to go back to my husband and repair the damage I had done. But he knew it wouldn't be easy, that he would have to fight to rebuild the trust he had lost.

I took refuge in my sister's house, finding comfort in her company and support in her unconditional love. She welcomed me with open arms, offering me a safe haven in the midst of the storm that had unleashed in my life.

In the meantime, I work to correct my mistakes. I write endless messages to my husband, expressing my regret and promising to change. I call again and again, begging for a chance to make things right, to show him that we can get through this together.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation like mine? Have you found yourself caught up in poor decisions, where a moment of weakness changes the course of your life forever? If so, I understand you. The flesh is weak, and we can all make mistakes.

I wonder, what would you do in my situation? How would you deal with a separation?

I know that there are no easy answers, that each situation is unique, and that what works for one may not work for another. But still, I would like to hear your advice, words that can help me get out of this situation.

How can I repair the damage I have caused? How can I show my husband that I am worthy of his forgiveness and love? How can I find the strength to move forward, to get up from this fall and start again?

I ask you not to judge me for what I did, to look beyond my mistakes and see the person who still longs for good. I am open to any advice, any suggestions you can offer me. Because at this moment, any word, no matter how small, can help.

So I invite you to share your thoughts, your experiences, your words of encouragement. I am ready to listen, ready to learn, ready to face whatever life has in store for me.

I try to keep going, I try to find a reason to get out of bed every morning, but sometimes the depression is too much.

I don't know how to get out of this black hole I'm in. I don't know how to find the light at the end of the tunnel, when everything around me seems so dark and hopeless. I feel lost and abandoned.

2024.05.08 00:23 CapitaosEyepatch New PS5 player - Need to Vent + also tips please?

Hey all!
Like alot of people I recently started playing this on PS5. It's the one Xbox game I've been dying to play for years and couldn't believe it when they announced it was coming to playstation.
I absolutely love the gameplay and concept of SoT. But holy hell does it make my blood boil sometimes, and reminds me why I don't play competitive games. As someone who only really plays more casual stuff or co op games, I'm struggling to get used to the fact every one will try and kill you, regardless of you minding your own business. (Pls just one friendly pirate be out there when I sail past)
And yeah, I know, sea of thieves is a pirate game. It's pvp at its core, and I get that. And yes I know there's safer seas, but not even being able to use captained ships sucks, and I dont want to be in an empty game world.
As an example, me and my friend who is on PC (so I can't turn crossplay off) who also started playing when the PS5 version dropped just spent over 2 hours collecting the maps for a treasure vault. We weren't rushing, just having a laugh and minding our own business. Finally opened the vault and got everything in it, spent a good 20 minutes just getting everything on the ship and fighting the damn volcano on the island, only for a 3 man brig to come and start attacking us. As far as I'm aware sailing against the wind in a sloop when you're being chased by bigger ships is the way to gain ground, but we were already near the edge of the map so had no choice but to turn back into the wind, and of course were shortly destroyed.
We managed to find and destroy and kill them all at the outpost but all the loot was sold by that point of course. What exactly were we meant to do in that situation?
I dont need replies please saying SoTs is a pvp game get used to it or don't play, because it's not like there's an alternative game like this anyway, nor would I want it to be different. Genuinely just looking for tips and to have a discussion. - How do you adjust to this kind of aggressive world? Maybe playing so much Helldivers 2 and other games has made me too naive that everyone will be nice ;_;
Thanks for reading and safe sailing out their fellow pirates

2024.05.08 00:00 HotEntranceTrain Potential opportunities to analyze Wallstreetbets or social sentiment using AI for traders

Can wallstreetbets or other social media platforms be used as a source of valuable information for traders? Can artificial intelligence (AI) help analyze the sentiment and trends of these online communities and predict the direction of stock prices?

What is sentiment analysis?

Sentiment analysis is a machine learning method in natural language processing that quantifies emotion in text by analyzing the meaning of words, their context, and their frequency. Sentiment analysis can be used to measure the overall attitude or opinion of a group of people towards a certain topic, such as a product, a brand, or a stock.
For example, sentiment analysis can be applied to wallstreetbets posts and comments to determine whether the users are bullish (positive) or bearish (negative) about a particular stock. This can give an indication of the market sentiment and the potential demand or supply for that stock.

How can sentiment analysis be used for trading?

Sentiment analysis can be used for trading in several ways. One way is to use it as a complementary indicator to technical analysis or fundamental analysis. For example, if a stock has strong fundamentals and positive technical indicators, but the sentiment on wallstreetbets is negative, it may indicate that the stock is undervalued or oversold and may present a buying opportunity. Conversely, if a stock has weak fundamentals and negative technical indicators, but the sentiment on wallstreetbets is positive, it may indicate that the stock is overvalued or overbought and may present a selling opportunity.
Another way is to use sentiment analysis as a contrarian indicator. This means that instead of following the crowd, one can trade against the prevailing sentiment. For example, if the sentiment on wallstreetbets is overwhelmingly bullish about a stock, it may signal that the stock is in a bubble and may soon experience a correction or a crash. Conversely, if the sentiment on wallstreetbets is overwhelmingly bearish about a stock, it may signal that the stock is in a dip and may soon experience a rebound or a rally.
Of course, sentiment analysis is not a foolproof method and should not be used alone. It should be combined with other factors such as market conditions, news events, risk management, and trading psychology. Moreover, sentiment analysis may not always reflect the true intentions or actions of the users. Some users may post false or misleading information to manipulate the market or to troll other users. Therefore, one should always do their own research and verify the sources before making any trading decisions.

What are some examples of AI tools for analyzing wallstreetbets or social media?

There are several existing projects and tools that use AI to analyze wallstreetbets or social media for trading purposes. Here are some examples:
However, this is not an exhaustive list and there may be other ways to use AI to analyze wallstreetbets or social media for trading purposes. For example, one could use natural language generation to create fake posts or comments to influence the market sentiment or to test different hypotheses. One could also use natural language understanding to extract more information from wallstreetbets or social media posts and comments, such as emotions, intents, sarcasm, irony, etc.
The main challenge of using AI to analyze wallstreetbets or social media for trading purposes is to ensure the quality and reliability of the data and the analysis. As mentioned earlier, wallstreetbets or social media posts and comments may not always reflect the true opinions or actions of the users. They may also contain noise, errors, spam, bots, or other forms of manipulation. Therefore, one should always be careful and critical when using AI to analyze wallstreetbets or social media for trading purposes.
AI is a powerful tool that can help traders gain insights and advantages from wallstreetbets or social media data. However, it is not a magic bullet and it does not replace human judgment and intuition. Traders should always use AI as a supplement and not a substitute for their own research and analysis.

Advanced Email Management with Microsoft Graph

Email automation and management have become crucial in modern software development, especially when dealing with system-generated messages such as those from a "noreply" address. Microsoft Graph offers a sophisticated API that enables developers to interact with Microsoft 365 services in a unified manner. This capability includes reading, sending, and managing emails, which can be particularly useful for automating email forwarding tasks.
One advanced feature of Microsoft Graph is its support for the credential flow, allowing applications to authenticate and perform actions on behalf of a user or service without interactive login. This feature is instrumental when setting up automated systems that can forward emails from a "noreply" address to a specified recipient, ensuring that important notifications are not missed and can be acted upon promptly by the intended parties.

2024.05.07 21:27 Somedrunkengamer FitBit Updates: A comprehensive list of complaints.

I was asked to list "what are you even complaining about."
I put together a list, here it is.
Feel free to correct me and make suggestions.
  1. App Redesign: Some users have found the redesigned app to be less intuitive and more challenging to navigate. The change in layout has also been criticized for adding unnecessary complexity to what was once a straightforward interface.
  2. Sleep Tracking Updates: The new sleep tracking functionality has been problematic for some users, with reports of inaccurate sleep detection and issues with the app incorrectly ending sleep sessions if the user is awake for short periods during the night.【https://gadgetsandwearables.com/2024/04/11/fitbit-sleep-tracking-upgrade/】.
  3. "Move Reminders" or Steps Streak and Celebrations: While the reintroduction of the Steps streak feature has been welcomed by many, some users may find it less motivating or redundant if they do not engage with daily step challenges but are getting lambasted with notifications.
Updates seem to reset this settings
  1. Battery Percentage Display: Users do not find it particularly useful compared to other possible display options.
  2. Dark Mode and UI Adjustments: The implementation of dark mode has been delayed, and the excessive white space in the design has been a point of contention among users who prefer a more data-dense display for quick glances.【https://9to5google.com/2023/10/17/fitbit-redesign-updates/】.
  3. Material You Widget and Live Wallpaper: While these features attempted to enhance the visual appeal, they lead to increased battery consumption, which might be a concern for users prioritizing device longevity over aesthetic updates.
  4. Customizable Stats Display: The flexibility offered by customizable stats is anything except that.
  5. Integration with Google's Ecosystem: This integration has lead to concerns about privacy and data sharing between Fitbit and other Google services, potentially deterring users sensitive to their personal data usage.
  6. Enhanced Accessibility Features: While improvements are being made, initial versions may still not fully accommodate all accessibility needs, leaving some users with disabilities underserved.
  7. Expansion of Health Metrics: The expansion of metrics, such as detailed heart rate variability, doesn't expand anything compared to the previous straightforward health tracking experience.
  8. Personalized Nutrition Insights: These insights require users to manually log meals the new process is tedious.
  9. Enhanced Sleep Tools: New tools provide too little information, upsetting users who were instead used to the offering of clear and actionable insights that was previously available.
  10. Advanced Cardio Fitness Tracking: The cardio fitness tracking and predictive activity has been inaccurate. Person reported that it believed the user was swimming in while mowing the yard, I had it think I was riding a mountain bike while I was casually walking across campus. This is an inaccurate calorie burn count
  11. Ecosystem Synergy: While aiming for a seamless experience, the synergy between Fitbit and other Google products lead to an ecosystem lock-in, where users are compelled to use Google products to fully benefit from their Fitbit. This feels like a trap.
  12. Issues with Redesigned Sleep Features: The redesigned sleep tracking features have received criticism for the removal of certain useful metrics like the oxygen saturation graph, which was valuable for users monitoring specific health conditions. The redesign has also made some aspects of the interface harder to read, which could be frustrating for users who rely on these metrics for health management. 【https://gadgetsandwearables.com/2024/04/11/fitbit-sleep-tracking-upgrade/】.
  13. Reduced Visibility of Certain Features: In the pursuit of a cleaner interface, some users have noted that essential features like detailed activity data are less immediately visible and require additional navigation steps. This could detract from the user experience, especially for those who value efficiency and quick access to their data【https://9to5google.com/2023/10/17/fitbit-redesign-updates/】.
Examples
These changes, while aimed at simplifying the app interface and making it visually appealing, can impact users who rely on quick and easy access to detailed health and fitness data for daily management and decision-making. The intention might be to create a cleaner look, but it could detract from the functionality for power users who monitor their metrics closely.
  1. Delayed Rollout of Features: Some of the promised features like dark mode have experienced delays in rollout, which can be disappointing for users looking forward to these updates. Delays can affect user satisfaction and trust in the brand, especially if users feel that the updates are reactive rather than proactive. 【https://9to5google.com/2023/10/17/fitbit-redesign-updates/】.
  2. Privacy Concerns with Increased Data Tracking: With the introduction of more comprehensive health metrics and integration into Google’s ecosystem, there are increased concerns about privacy and how personal health data is handled and shared. Users might be wary about the potential for sensitive health data to be used beyond the app, affecting their privacy preferences. Users must trust Fitbit's security measures, which, if compromised, could lead to significant privacy breaches.
**Cough Google Account **
  1. Integration Challenges: As Fitbit further integrates with Google's ecosystem, there may be challenges for users who use other platforms (like iOS or non-Google Android devices). These users might find decreased compatibility or features that are optimized for Google services, potentially limiting their experience.
  2. Feature Redundancy and Clutter: As Fitbit continues to add features, there's a risk of cluttering the interface and creating redundancy, which can confuse users rather than aid them. For those who prefer a minimalistic approach, the influx of new features might feel overwhelming and detract from the core functionalities they primarily use.
For instance:
  1. Battery Life Impact: The introduction of more complex methods tracking features, like continuous heart rate monitoring and extensive use of GPS in workouts, significantly drain battery life. For users who rely on their Fitbit devices for long periods between charges, this can be a major inconvenience.
There isn't even a benefit as the updates are worse than what was already working.
  1. Social Feature Fatigue: The social aspects of Fitbit, such as challenges and competitions, while intended to motivate, clutter the UI and push for Google Account integration.
These social features also seem to be why the features are being dumbed down.
  1. Cost of Premium Features: Many of the new and advanced features are often gated behind the Fitbit Premium subscription. This can alienate users who do not wish to pay extra, making them feel they are not getting the full value from their device unless they subscribe.
Features that were previously sold as part of the device have been moved behind the premium paywall.
On the other hand, the premium members do not feel as if we are being heard.
  1. Reliability Issues with Updates: As with any technology, new updates introduced bugs and stability issues. Users experienced glitches or temporary outages that affect the reliability of their device, leading to frustration, especially if these occur during critical usage times.
There has been two big ones in the last year
  1. Dependence on Mobile Devices: The increased functionality of the Fitbit app often requires continuous connectivity with a smartphone. For users who prefer to use their fitness trackers independently of their phones, this dependence can be a limitation.
A FitBit used to be able to be used without the app. Everything was available on the device itself.
  1. Update Rollout Inconsistency has lead to a disparity in user experience and frustrate users who are aware of features but unable to access them.
  2. Interoperability Issues: As Fitbit continues to integrate more deeply into Google’s ecosystem, users of non-Google products might face interoperability issues. This can limit functionality or result in a disjointed experience for users who use a mix of technology platforms.
  3. User Experience Inconsistency Across Devices: Fitbit users experience inconsistencies across different devices due to varying hardware capabilities. Features available on one model might not be available on others, leading to confusion and a fragmented user experience.
  4. Imprecision in Health Metrics: Despite claimed advances the sensors in Fitbit devices have sometimes provided imprecise data since the updates, especially sleep data.

Even before he really knew what it meant, Allen Wong wanted to be rich. As a kid, he didn’t yet equate the word with “luxury” or “status” or “expensive things.” He didn’t think wealth would bring him 85-inch televisions and Jacuzzis, a one-of-a-kind rose-gold Lamborghini in the garage, a wearable Iron Man suit that shoots lasers — though he does, actually, have all of that now. What “rich” seemed to dangle was something simpler, more elementary, more a feeling than anything else: freedom from pain.
Wong’s parents had fled poverty — at one point, his father used tennis balls as flotation devices to illicitly cross waters from Guangzhou into Hong Kong — in order to raise a family in a more opportune land. But growing up in New York City, Wong watched one parent peddle medicinal herbs all day long while the other toiled away in a Chinatown sweatshop. They barely had time to slough off one workday before trudging into the next.
“I didn’t want my life to end up like that,” he told me. “I didn’t want to be absent from my family and only show up a few hours each day after work. I didn’t want my life to be monotonous and stuck in a repeating loop until I die.”
Then, in 2008, right as he was graduating from college, the family convulsed. Wong’s father was ousted from his business, sank into a depression and committed suicide; his mother tripped down a spiral of mental illness. Suddenly, Wong’s entry-level computer programming job was the household’s only source of income, and there was a world financial crisis going on. He had always dreamed about digging out of the middle-class quagmire — striking gold, pulling in enough money from a one-off idea that he would never have to work the way his parents did. But it was now, as anxiety and medical bills piled up, that those idle daydreams began to feel urgent and necessary. So he turbocharged his ambitions. He started coding around the clock, tinkering on D.I.Y. software ideas whenever he wasn’t at work, barely sleeping. He doggedly pushed one project after another to the App Store, praying for something to take off.
Eventually, one did: an app that let users tune in to police scanners around the world. Then another. Their runaway success took even him by surprise. By the time his peers were splurging on their first West Elm sofas, he was a self-made multimillionaire.
Wong found his day job interesting enough, and he liked his colleagues. But submitting himself to a boss’s whims, spending his days trapped like a houseplant under corporate fluorescence, grated at him; it reminded him too much of his parents’ suffering. What, he wondered, could a so-called career really offer him if he had already secured enough money for a good life? The whole point of working was to get what he had just gotten. So, at 25, he bought a $250,000 sports car painted a shimmery lime green — it wasn’t so crazy a purchase, he reasoned, because his police-scanner app was by then generating that amount of revenue in a single month — and announced that he was retiring forever.
It was only after he bought a second exotic car, a five-bedroom house in Celebration, Fla., a dog and a Disney World annual pass for his mother that Wong learned that there was an entire online community of people seeking to do what he had just done. Wong had heard of the Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) movement before, but he didn’t think it really applied to him because of its focus on frugality. FIRE got its start in the early 2000s with a mantra of extreme saving — you may remember hearing about stoic ultraminimalists living off beans and friends’ couches — but it has since come to include all the people who would like to exit the work force on their own terms, at an age of their own choosing, rather than hustling for a paycheck all the way into their 60s. After Wong made a Reddit post sharing his story, it attracted such a flurry from FIRE adherents that he quickly became the quasi president of one of the group’s biggest online enclaves.
Some FIRE aspirants still get to early retirement by the traditional route of simply saving madly. Others, though, truffle-hunt for high-paying W-2s, tax loopholes, bold and risky market bets or big entrepreneurial ploys like Wong’s. The overarching credo of FIRE is that in today’s unpredictable financial landscape, 9-to-5s and decades-long careers have become bad investments: Old-school benefits like pensions and job security are a thing of the past, and wages aren’t even keeping up with the galloping pace of inflation. According to a 2023 survey, one-quarter of Americans would like to retire before age 50. After decades of tolerating workaholic culture as the norm, employees are tired, unafraid to show it and yearning to yank back control of their lives. To fed-up workers willing to do a little bit of math, FIRE offers a straightforward antidote: You can just leave it all behind.
Like Wong, and like so many other people who chase financial independence, I didn’t grow up with a lot of money — which might be why I became obsessed with it.
Long before “side hustle” became Merriam-Webster lingo, I was working Costco snack arbitrage on the elementary-school playground and hawking homemade bookmarks to my teachers. In adulthood, I moved on to online surveys, research studies, plasma donation, vintage resale, parts modeling and dog-sitting in other people’s homes in lieu of paying rent. I have left no income source unturned. I’ve trawled every page of NerdWallet and The Points Guy. I have made questionable margin calls. I have woken up at the crack of dawn to day-trade $NVDA, $TSLA, $TSM. I have “flipped”; I have “churned.” When I feel sad, I open my phone to check on the interest rates in the five-pronged CD ladder I’ve lovingly assembled in my Marcus account, like a tic, to feel better.
Come on, Kids. Let’s Grab Drinks. ImageWong in his Ironman suit standing next to the bathtub. Wong created a police-scanner app that was so popular that it allowed him to retire at 25.Credit...Maggie Shannon for The New York Times Is this all embarrassing to confess? Incredibly so. Would I characterize my relationship to money as “unhealthy”? Also yes. But I often wonder if anybody in this economy, in this country — where more than 60 percent of the work force lives paycheck to paycheck, where the average American is in five- to six-figure debt and often has only cursory knowledge of how he or she got there — has a healthy relationship to money. Simply learning to understand your own finances can feel, several FIRErs said to me, like acquiring a “secret weapon.”
The original FIRE doctrine revolves around delay of gratification. Save your money — ideally as much as 50 to 75 percent of each paycheck — instead of spending it immediately, and when you’ve amassed enough of a nest egg, quit your job and take the rest of your life for yourself. “It’s simple, because the main principles fit on a Post-it note,” Jacob Lund Fisker, a Danish former astrophysicist who is often thought of as the father of the FIRE movement, told me. “However, it is not easy, because everything the typical middle-class consumer has been raised and trained to believe goes against these principles. People have grown up associating success with money and spending money with happiness. They’ve been trained to sit still and perform repetitive work, first by a teacher, then by a manager. They’ve been educated to be specialists in a narrow field and never think outside that box.”
Fisker’s 2010 book, “Early Retirement Extreme” — written mostly while he lived out of an R.V. on $7,000 a year — is one seminal text for early retirees. Two others are “Your Money or Your Life,” a 1992 personal-finance bible written by Joseph R. Dominguez and Vicki Robin, and the blog Mr. Money Mustache, started in 2011 by Peter Adeney, who retired from his software-engineering job in 2005 at age 30 and figured out how to shrink his family’s expenses down to just $24,000 a year. The tao of all three tomes is that minimalist spending and anti-consumption can offer the keys to better living. (Adeney has professed to be “really just trying to get rich people to stop destroying the planet,” but his tens of thousands of monthly visitors tend to be more fixated on his other mantra: “Make you rich so you can retire early.”)
Conventional FIRE adherents are not necessarily big earners or genius mathematicians with incredible impulse control. Their superpower is their expert planning; it’s the ability to see the finish line from miles away that has allowed even some minimum-wage workers to achieve early retirement. One simple FIRE rule of thumb is to first calculate your target “FI number” by multiplying anticipated annual retirement expenses by at least 25, and then squirrel away as much as possible into interest-accruing or tax-advantaged buckets like 401(k)s, low-fee index funds, certificates of deposit, HSAs and Roth IRAs until you hit that number. As an example, if you bring home $150,000 a year, can save half of that and plan to spend $50,000 per year in retirement, then it will take only 16.5 years before you can kiss your job goodbye. For those who earn less or spend more, it will take longer — but for still others who can endure greater sacrifices, FIRE can be possible as early as their 30s.
From these plain origins, many offshoots of FIRE have sprouted up — some much more brazen than others. It’s rare to find anyone these days who actually wants to get to early retirement by living off beans; those people, with their stringent penny-pinching, are largely known in the community as LeanFIRE. A lot more people aim for CoastFIRE (a more measured approach that involves front-loading your retirement savings and “coasting” on compound interest and working lightly until you’re ready to quit) or BaristaFIRE (quitting your job but buttressing your retirement with a side gig, such as that of a part-time barista, to receive health-insurance benefits) or FatFIRE (a luxurious, no-sacrifice approach to retirement, the polar opposite of LeanFIRE — and the subset to which Wong belongs).
You might be tempted to regard early retirees as layabouts, soaking up sunshine while everyone else toils. But why not see them as brave maniacs, daring to build an entirely new vision of the world? Retirement has long been framed as a reward for a job well done — social reformers started pushing for mandatory post-work benefits in the early 20th century, and policies like Social Security later codified the tipping point between labor and leisure — but if FIRE’s incredible popularity of late (the Fire subreddit alone boasts nearly half a million members) is a defiant reaction to economic hardship, then it’s also a plea to re-evaluate the centrality of work to modern living. Maybe, the movement suggests, we should have always been in it for ourselves, and nobody else, from the start.
To my left was a woman who runs a phone-sex hotline; to my right, a cruise operator, a disaster-response volunteer, a kitchen-appliance entrepreneur, a public-school teacher and a former Off Broadway actor who now lives out of the back of an 18-wheeler and puts 70 percent of her weekly paycheck into index funds. It was a chilly spring weekend, and we had all flown to Cincinnati for EconoMe, an annual all-flavors-of-FIRE conference in which hundreds of people of all ages, from all over, bandy about tips on financial independence from dawn to dusk. The point of FIRE meetups — EconoMe is the largest, but others take place all over the world, some of them at a monthly clip — is only partly to give fiscal advice. Every person’s retirement plan is a highly individualized choreography, after all, so the manifold workshops and breakout groups are meant to offer only high-level ideas. The broader purpose of these get-togethers is more a sort of group therapy, geared to help people achieve their common goals and forge through their common struggles.
Much of the crowd was timid but curious — like Laura Rojo-Eddy, who decided on a whim to fly out from Texas. “My family doesn’t know anything about FIRE,” she told me. “I’ve been really shy talking about it. It’s hard to talk about finances with strangers, but in a way it’s even harder with people you love.” She chanced upon the movement in 2021 via a former colleague’s LinkedIn post, which made her consider for the first time that she may not have to work until the standard age of 65. The friend “posted she was retiring thanks to FIRE, and I was like: That’s really cool! But what the hell is she talking about? And, holy crap, this person’s my age — 40 — and what if I could do that? Should I do that?”
At EconoMe, bank-account totals were traded more freely than phone numbers. The conference’s organizer, Diania Merriam (retired at 33), introduced speakers like Jeremy Schneider (retired at 36), who spoke about how to pick a good financial adviser; the retired divorce lawyer Aaron Thomas, who evangelized the importance of prenups; the real estate tax strategist Natalie Kolodij, who discussed real estate investing and recommended employing your children starting from the age they are able to do household chores, which offers a double benefit of reducing a parent’s taxable income while building an investment-accruing tax shelter for the 7-year-old. Stephanie Zito’s two-hour seminar on the nitty-gritty of “travel hacking,” a.k.a. traversing the world through strategic deployment of credit-card points, had the crowd on the edge of their seats.
In one morning session, a brave volunteer named Krista put her life’s “balance sheet” up on a big screen so that 500 strangers could critique it for blind spots. She is 35, with four kids ages 16, 15, 9 and 7, and makes $32,000 working in a library in Wisconsin. Over the last seven years, since discovering FIRE, she and her husband had slowly paid off $200,000 in credit-card and home- and auto-loan debt. But she knew, she said, humbly dipping her head a bit, that she still had a long way to go, especially when compared with all the younger, already-retired millionaires in the room.
“Wait a second,” Frank Vasquez, one of the conference’s speakers, interrupted. “No. Do you all see this? Krista was a teenage mom who grew up in poverty. We are looking, right now, at a map of a hero’s journey.”
Jackie Cummings Koski of Dayton, Ohio, grew up on food stamps, learned about FIRE in her early 40s and retired at 49 with $1.3 million in savings.Credit...Brian Kaiser for The New York Times During a break, Jackie Cummings Koski, an Ohio local, shared her story with me: She grew up on food stamps and had a “wake-up call” with money after an acrimonious divorce left her a single mother. She learned about FIRE in her early 40s. Newly enlightened, she started saving 40 percent of the salary from her five-figure job, reached financial independence at 47 and pulled the trigger on retirement at 49, with $1.3 million in savings. “My corporate job had nothing to do with what I want to do,” Koski told me. “I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it.” She added: “While most FIRE people brag about having an old car with 200,000 miles or whatever, I drive a luxury car. But nobody’s going to chastise me, because I still retired early, even with that car, even with having made some mistakes!” Koski spends her time nowadays creating financial content and advocating for personal-finance classes to be added to high schools, and she recently wrote a “FIRE for Dummies” manual.
To my surprise, a sizable portion of the FIRE crowd at EconoMe was older. This wasn’t so surprising to Bill Yount, a 58-year-old retired physician who recently started up a podcast with Koski and another friend, Becky Heptig, that speaks to older demographics. “The average American is a late starter,” Yount told me. “That’s just who we are, living in this consumption society and not having the mentality of saving often or early.” And things are no longer “9-to-5, 40 years and a gold watch” the way they were for his parents’ generation: “I’m not in the gold-watch generation. Gen X got lost, got forgotten.”
Heptig, who is 68, found herself in dire financial straits in her 50s, when her husband’s small business faltered. “I got really scared, thinking we will never get out of this debt and we will never retire,” she says. They took a course from the financial-advice radio host Dave Ramsey, and her husband signed up for a W-2 job. After that, they started saving madly. “We were net-worth zero at 50 years old, and he retired at 63 — so for us, where we started from, we consider ourselves retiring early,” Heptig says. She had made the same wild discovery that everyone in FIRE does: that it can really take as little as a decade to hit early retirement, from the moment you learn about it and start planning. But as Yount put it to me: “You don’t know what you don’t know. You don’t even know to go looking for it.”
Maybe it’s because I know too much about looking for money that I found myself, while reporting this article, especially drawn to the subculture of FatFIRE — and to the lavish, unapologetic, in-your-face money philosophy that Allen Wong and others of his ilk prefer. FatFIRE flies in the face of all the other variants of FIRE. It is anti-anticonsumption. Its typical benchmark is to accumulate enough wealth that you can comfortably spend at least $100,000 a year in retirement, but some highfliers aim for much, much bigger sums. It espouses an unbridled maximalism, a have-it-all abundance.
While most other FIRE communities steer toward the friendly and pragmatic, FatFIRE’s adherents tend to be jaded, brusque, laser-focused. They hunt for the “exit,” in the tech-world manner of speaking: a fast, lucrative way out. On the FatFIRE subreddit, aspirants ogle severance packages, geo-arbitrage, REIT, tax loopholes, high-risk options straddles and potential business moonshots. Successful FatFIRErs applaud one another for hitting double-digit-millions net worth, debate the merits of private jets versus second homes and agonize over how large a trust fund is ethical to set up for their kids. And just as Fisker and Adeney were beacons to early-era FIRE devotees, Allen Wong is FatFIRE’s mythic hero.
Wong is quiet and unassuming in person. When I finally met him this spring — three years after we first began chatting online — near his childhood home in Queens, he wore jeans, Asics and a wary self-consciousness. Now in his mid-30s, he has comfortably enjoyed nearly a decade of leisure; he spends the bulk of his days playing pickleball and counseling strangers online on how to follow in his footsteps. He’s not particularly interested in fame, so he posts, as the senior moderator of FatFIRE, under his app company’s name. For someone who is a living talisman against the tenets of conventional living, he speaks with a surprising calm — though his eyes flashed with a certain pride whenever we talked about his childhood or his father. Even though it sprouted up only seven years ago, FatFIRE is on the verge of overtaking FIRE in size, Wong told me. Membership doubled during the pandemic despite moderators’ intentionally hiding the forum from Reddit’s homepage, he said, showing me a graph, and he added that most of its members seem to be “early-career American men.”
This makes sense. Millennials may have been ushered into the work force with the encouragement to hustle, but we soon found ourselves jerked around by utterly unaffordable housing, pandemic layoffs, salaries that flopped flat while costs went stratosphere-high. Nearly half of young adults have “money dysphoria,” according to a recent survey from the personal-finance company Credit Karma. Online, trends like “quiet luxury” and “dupe culture” glorify totems of wealth while making it clear how depressingly inaccessible that echelon is for the average Joe. If the recent “antiwork” movement laid bare the disillusionment of the young work force, then FatFIRE represents those feelings put into action.
Some FatFIRE success stories are like Wong’s: a result of obsessive entrepreneurism. Just as many are a byproduct of grinding away at a regular, albeit high-earning, job for enough years. (Fisker, for one, argues that FatFIRE is just an aesthetic rebranding of the work-smart-not-hard ethos that has been woven throughout American history.) In San Francisco, Sam Dogen faithfully saved his finance-job paychecks for 13 years before retiring in 2012 to live off passive investment income. He initially budgeted $100,000 for him and his wife to spend per year, but they upped the target to $200,000 after having their first child, then to $300,000 after a second child — and recently again to $350,000 to account for the recent bout of unchecked inflation. “We choose to live in an expensive coastal city and choose to have two children,” Dogen told me. “But you look at the $300,000 budget I made for a family of four, and you’re like, This is a pretty middle-class lifestyle. FatFIRE is almost a necessity if you want to live in San Francisco.”
“I think more people should aim for FatFIRE, because even if you don’t hit it, you’ll be at regular FIRE,” Jeff Underwood, a San Diego-based FatFIRE aspirant who started chasing financial independence after he lost his house and sank $10,000 into debt, told me. “The idea of LeanFIRE makes me super nervous. Health care costs are going up. There are all these unknowns. You could really find yourself in trouble.” Through smart tips he picked up on financial-planning forums, Underwood’s net worth steadily climbed from $0 in 2011 to $1 million in 2023. He is drawn to FatFIRE’s cheeky energy and its emphasis on securing a big safety net: “I had spent so long in the survival mind-set,” he says. “My default position is to plan for the worst, because I’ve already been through the worst.”
Wong now splits most of his time between houses in Celebration, Fla., and in New York City. He wakes up early to play pickleball and can keep at it for hours if the weather is nice. Because he has so much free time to practice, he has gotten good enough to compete against elite players and coach novices. (He offered to teach me how to play, but it was a wind-whipped 35 degrees when we met up in early April, so we went to have soup dumplings instead.) Otherwise, he reads up on tech and cybersecurity news, plays video games and undertakes home-renovation projects. His houses have been burglarized three times, although he managed to halt the latest attempt with a self-programmed alarm system. He used to make videos about his exotic car collection on YouTube, a few of which went viral, but he grew tired of being a “content creator” because it felt too much like having a job. Plus, he had already done the whole rack-up-a-huge-number thing before — with money.
“It was as if I fast-forwarded through an entire movie, and the end credits are slowly rolling,” Wong told me recently, recalling his first, restless years in retirement. “There was nothing more to watch, and all my peers were still busy watching the movie that I already finished. After I traveled the world and had done just about every possible fun thing I could possibly do, I often found myself wondering, What now?”
Life after early retirement: the elephant in the room. What to do after the cruises, the skydiving, the teetering stack of books on the night stand? The main danger of FIRE is that you might be running hard away from something rather than toward it — that you’re propelled only by the too-nebulous idea of escape. And then, even for those who lay out a clear road map for decades of nirvana, the loneliness can eat at you.
That’s why some, like Merriam, EconoMe’s organizer, host regular social events in their local cities. The online community ChooseFI maintains a sprawling network of hundreds of local FIRE groups in cities around the world. Amy Minkley, who retired by working in Asia as a teacher and saving up to $90,000 of her salary each year, organizes an annual FIRE meetup in Bali as a way of keeping up the community that saved her from depression: “It just felt like someone had thrown me a life raft, and I could see the light at the end of the tunnel,” she told me.
A lot of other people go the Mr. Money Mustache route: They blog. Their posts about income spreadsheets and VTSAX returns then attract the like-minded, as potential friends or even lovers. Koski has heard of romances blossoming among fellow FIRErs — though many of them prefer the company of a FIRE Luddite. “A good chunk of my friends are on my phone,” Gwen Merz, who began saving up for FIRE when she discovered the Mustache blog at age 22 and reached CoastFIRE at age 32 with $400,000 in savings, told me.
A common worry is when to stop. How much is enough? Why not make more? Since there is an upper limit to money’s effect on joy — studies have shown that global happiness tops out at income levels of about $75,000 a year — chasing infinite wealth may be psychologically futile.
“I think people can accumulate money to the detriment of their health and happiness,” says Alan Donegan, who with his wife, Katie, lives a nomadic lifestyle and coaches FIRE newbies toward their resignation letters by “trying to show money is a tool to create your version of an extraordinary life.” There are also those like Oliver Truong, a 27-year-old who cares less about the dollars and cents of it all than about fulfilling a self-imposed challenge: “I think FIRE people are some of the most creative people I’ve ever met,” he told me at EconoMe. “At least for me, it was never about the money, honestly. It was more about just doing something I wanted on my own.”
For those who succeed at early retirement, especially at the FatFIRE level, a surprise depression can set in. “It’s quite alarming and sad to see how many people are lost after they do this,” Wong’s FatFIRE co-moderator, Mike Doehla, told me. Doehla himself thought he was prepared for the social segregation when he FatFIREd at 40 in 2022 through his nutrition-coaching business. He wasn’t. “It has been pretty isolating, and almost awkward at times,” he confessed. Based in a small town in upstate New York, Doehla doesn’t know anyone in real life who has retired early, and all his friends are still working. But, he told me, “I think I’m psychologically broken from ever working someone else’s schedule again,” and he is keen to discover who he is, as a person, outside of work. If the quest for happiness were a tangible metric, Doehla reckons he is about 60 percent of the way there: “I have this FOMO, this empty cup, regarding what is going around me that so many people have experienced, that I just want to taste a bit.”
At EconoMe, I met a 52-year-old architect who considers himself “FattishFIRE”; he and his wife spend about $8,000 a month in Boston and would like to keep up that lifestyle in retirement. But, he told me, “I pretend I have a lot less than I do.” He lives in a building where many of his neighbors “have very little money, live off government assistance and are critical of wealthy people. They don’t know we’re like ‘stealth wealth.’ Would they not like me anymore?” (For this reason, he asked not to be identified.) He has saved enough money to retire within two or three years if he wants to, but he worries about how he’ll be perceived within a field that takes pride in its workhorse culture: “I’d always thought ‘architect’ was my personality and was going to be until I died,” he said. “Am I being too nervous? Am I crazy? I’m still a little ashamed.”
Sam Dogen budgets $350,000 a year in expenses for his family of four: “FatFIRE is almost a necessity if you want to live in San Francisco,” he says.Credit...Maggie Shannon for The New York Times After a decade in retirement, Dogen, the San Francisco FatFIREr, recently did the unimaginable: He decided to go back to work. He doesn’t really need the money, but the endless leisure has begun to wear on him. “I can’t do pickleball all day,” Dogen told me. “So what’s the responsible thing to do? And the responsible thing to do is to find a job that has good purpose, good meaning, where you can work with some smart people and have a lot of camaraderie.” He added: “It just feels good to be part of something. I think it’s really important that we all feel like we’re part of something, contributing.” He took one gig but quit because it ate up too much time, and he is now looking for a less demanding part-time position.
Wong, these days, loves to volunteer. He donates to charities, serves on neighborhood boards and of course plays both chairman and soothsayer to the fraternity (for it is largely male) of FatFIRE. Wong doesn’t so much mind being solitary in real life — he considers himself a lone wolf and is often wary of making new friends for fear they will try to take financial advantage of him. He has been duped in the past by family members or acquaintances, including a friend who falsely claimed to need support for lifesaving heart surgeries. It’s not uncommon for him to get Venmo requests from strangers. (Many of his pickleball acquaintances learned about his wealth when a photographer showed up on the court to shoot him for this article.)
I asked him what he plans to do in his second decade of retirement — or his third or fourth or beyond. He doesn’t know yet. He told me he has been intrigued by the rise of A.I. and has flirted with the idea of a D.I.Y. project in that space. Ultimately, though, he hasn’t pursued it. He fears even self-employment would bring back the manic stresses he fought so hard to leave behind. “When I FatFIREd, I freed myself,” Wong told me. Inner peace, then, is the precious goal. He treasures all the time he has been able to spend with his mother and may one day share his wealth with children of his own. “Should I have worked more and made even more money? I’ve definitely left many millions of dollars on the table by stepping away from it all,” he told me. “But I always end up coming to the same conclusion: There’s no point in making so much money if you’re not going to be happy. I’d rather be free.”

Reported cases decreasing. Estimate reported cases down about -15%.
As usual, the case curve movement equals this amount during that time period. The 13-week graph shows solid downward movement. I still need another week of uncorrupted data to do proper computations. The previous week (and figures) are corrupted because of missing data.
REPORTED DEATHS PER WEEK Week of: 03/31-04/06: 8 04/07-04/13: 6 04/14-04/20: 14 (VDH updated from 5) 04/21-04/27: 1 (VDH corrected from 5) 04/28-05/04: 2 (preliminary figure)
The VDH death rate is never put out completely up to date due to delays in death data, which can run months. The death data above has been corrected to current reported deaths from VDH sources and is always subject to change.
The larger updated death chart covering more past weeks has been uploaded. Gray shaded areas are subject to change.
CURRENT POSITIVITY RATE AS OF MAY 3, 2024 CDC Region 3 7-Day Positivity Rate: 2.6% (was 2.8% (CDC corrected), -7.14%) US National level is 3.0% (was 3.1%, revised, last week). Highest is Northeast (NJ and NY) at 3.9% and rising (+30% jump in one week). These are preliminary figures which the CDC may revise next week.
Tests this week were done on 2,292 samples.
Large jump in Region 2 bears watching. This could be nothing or the beginning of a new wave.
Region 3 has still in the "Very Low" range, and still under the National Positivity Rate.
HOSPITALS
NOTE: COVID-19 hospital reporting requirements expired April 30, 2024. Data may be incomplete after this date.
Hospital report is partial.
VDH reported a decrease of -10.8% in ER visits last week that were diagnosed as Covid (0.33% of visits). Corrected last four weeks are now listed as 0.48%, 0.42%, 0.37% and 0.33% of ER visits. Virginia remains at a minimal level for ER Covid visits. Graph posted.
Admissions: Incomplete data. Shows a huge drop (almost -50%, probably due to the stopping of reporting), yet bed use was reported and shows a slight increase.
VDH reported an increase of +4.4% in Covid bed use, at 0.71% of beds being used (both adult and pediatric) for Covid. The last four weeks run 0.84%, 0.77%, 0.68% and 0.71%. Virginia remains at the Minimal Level for Covid bed use. Graph posted.
Last report of ICUs in use was 18 on a HHS report dated 04/27/24. This is the last time this number will be reported. HHS will receive no further updates.
FINAL NOTES
I believe we are still in a pattern of cases dropping, maybe -15%, but this figure may be too high based on the stopping of proper reporting. The 13-week chart shows a good curve downwards. As the previous week was corrupted, I need another week of data to see if I can properly report some solid figures.
LAYOUT First up is the total number of new Covid Cases for last week based on Sunday to Saturday. As the corrections VDH is putting in a week after the initial release makes following a trend impossible, I have stopped computing in this area as it would probably be incorrect.
Next is a listing of the cases from the last report to this one. It usually runs from last Wednesday to Tuesday, but could move based on holidays.
Reported deaths are next, which are based on Sunday to Saturday for the weeks listed.
The CDC Region 3 7-Day Positivity Rate is next, which at the moment just confirms or changes what the CDC put out Friday. They do another run on Monday nights taking a second look at things.
Hospital information for last week is next.
VDH's main summary page is located here. You can see all the latest trends at the link above - most graphics are interactive
EXPLANATION OF FIGURES ABOVE
Total New COVID Cases Reported Week (Sun-Sat) Of: cases reported for last week running Sunday to Saturday.

2024.05.07 20:49 RoryTate My first successful graveyard craft: fractured 3-mod chaos res/%ms/life boots. A guide to how I made approximately 200 div in just one weekend.

TLDR - They say an image is worth a thousand words.
Wealthy Exile Graph
I went from a respectable stash value estimated at 365 divines (that's raw currency, not including character investment), and nearly doubled that to around 615 divines in about three days, all thanks to a very simple crafting strategy: creating 3-mod fractured boots with a focus on getting chaos resistance, movement speed, and life (in that order).
Now I have to admit, my early league experiences with graveyard crafting were absolutely terrible. Sitting idle in my hideout would have been a better use of the time I wasted in the Necropolis. However, I knew that the potential was there for making great items, if I could only gain some experience in its proper use. So I resolved to learn about the mechanic once I had some spare time, and had farmed up enough initial materials to try and build a full graveyard on my own. Opportunity came knocking when I needed some upgraded boots to start switching to an omni build (and unfortunately – or fortunately I guess in the end – no boots existed for sale in SC trade with the mods I wanted). So I went on craftofexile and slapped together a quick and horribly unoptimized necropolis recipe (the web interface on that site for crafting with coffins is not very intuitive I must say, but in giving us a functional tool for a temporary league mechanic I won't complain), and despite my amateurish fumbling in theorycrafting my first graveyard, I got lucky on my very first try!
Necropolis Boot Craft Result 01 2024-05-04
I finished off this craft by using a Deafening Essence of Loathing and bench crafting a blocking prefix then exalt slamming a suffix, which landed me something valuable on the first/second attempt I think. However, it wasn't what I needed for my build, so I replaced the blocking prefix with a better bench craft and decided to just sell those first boots and try to craft another. I mean, it it seemed so easy, right? Yeah...not so much. It turns out that getting those three fractured mods is not a guarantee by any means. At best the craft seems to land at around a 26-27% success ratio, which was worse than I had first hoped. So I unfortunately whiffed on my next 5 attempts, which was frustrating. Though that turned out to not be so bad in the end either...but more on that later.
Here's a screenshot of the first sale I made, to show the kind of final crafted boots I'm talking about.
30 Div sale
These boots sold almost instantly for a hefty 30 divines, so obviously I was encouraged to do more. Before I get to the results of all the crafts I did, here is the crafting process I used. First the graveyard craft itself:
Graveyard craft
Note: this is probably version 7 or so of many different iterations I tried with different mod weightings, after learning about what worked and what didn't within Necropolis, and once I got better at target buying the final materials I needed.
This graveyard isn't optimized to min/max coffin placement with row/column boosting or anything like that. I just wanted a simple, relatively cheap method that didn't take a lot of planning (the common components in this configuration don't really warrant the extra expense anyway). My goal was to be able to slap down coffins as I acquired them, placing them wherever an open grave existed until I could pop out a new set of boots every few hours or so. Craftofexile gives this configuration a bit better than a 1 in 4 success rate (which is around what my small sample size worked out to, though my initial "slapped together" badly done recipes were probably closer to 1 in 5 odds or thereabouts). The great thing about this craft though was that even the whiffs turned out to sell for a nice profit (see the full album of sales below).
First, here is a (hopefully) detailed crafting guide:
  1. Craft the boots in the graveyard using something near the recipe I've shared (a different non-Evasion base can of course be selected and still make a profit, but if you don't choose a dex/evasion base, the boots cannot roll the valuable Spell Suppression mod later in this process...just FYI).
  2. Use a Deafening Essence of Loathing (3c each...very cheap this league) on the boots (or a different essence if you want some other mod besides elemental avoidance). The three fractures work great with the essence, since they mean you most often end up with just the 1 added essence suffix, which makes the next steps super easy. If you happen to get extra prefixes and suffixes after the essence is applied, you can try annulling them off (I had way more annuls than essences sitting around, so using an annul made economic sense for me, but if your essence is less than 5c in value, you're likely better off just applying the essence again). Whatever you do, you are looking to have just the essence mod before continuing to the next step (unless of course applying the essence gives you a valuable fifth or sixth mod already, but that is very unlikely, so I'll assume an exalt slam is needed moving forward in this guide).
  3. How you continue now depends on whether the fracture began as a 1 Suffix 2 Prefix item (the best config), or if it's 2 Suffix 1 Prefix. Let's start with the more valuable 1S2P case. You want to bench craft a cheap blocking prefix mod (like 25-34 mana, which costs 3 augments) and then exalt slam a suffix. You're looking to get T1 light/cold/fire res, or T1 dex (T1 stint mod(s) on a different base) from the exalt. The holy grail is of course exalt slamming T1 spell suppression on dex boots. Tier 2 of any of these mods is still quite valuable, so the great thing about this craft is that there's a wide range of decent suffix results that you can get. For the 1P2S case, the goal is a bit simpler. Depending on whether movement speed or life is missing as a prefix, the goal is just to exalt slam some prefix that isn't a low roll of those, and that isn't terrible. So I would again block Mana with a cheap bench craft, and then exalt slam and accept anything that wasn't the lowest tier possible, and then replace the temporary bench mana craft with whatever was missing between movement speed or life. There's nothing much to be gained from multiple essence and exalt slams in the 1P2S case, so I'd keep the costs low and not bother with more than a few attempts in this case. Considering the wide range of good results in both cases for this step, I ended up spending around 100 essences and 70 exalts in total over the 13 boots I crafted to produce something that could sell for multiple divines. The handful of annuls I used on occasion aren't worth factoring in to the costs. YMMV, and there can easily be a bad run of wasting 10+ essences at this step, but in practice I often hit something good in the first two or three tries. That's around 50-60c average cost to get an acceptable second prefix or suffix mod on the boots.
  4. After repeating step 2 and 3 until you've hit something good, you then bench craft on a good final prefix to replace the blocking mana mod (I chose evasion/life for this). In order for the item to sell, I recommend you finish the craft with some eldritch currency. Trying to sell the fractured base raw without essence or eldritch mods is probably going to be very hit and miss (mostly miss), since buyers prefer a finished item. Luckily I had a bunch of eldritch orbs on hand to spare, so I crafted lesser prefix mods on every pair of boots I made (except one where I accidentally selected greater eldritch embers...no big deal, it only took a few tries to hit something good, at which point I realized my misclick). The list of acceptable exarch mods was as follows: action speed, movement speed, chaos res, onslaught effect. Acceptable eater mods were: cooldown recovery (travel or global), avoid ele ailments.
Using the above process, here's a gallery of all the subsequent sales I made after the initial 30div sale:
29 Div sale
22 Div sale
20 Div sale
13 Div sale
9 Div sale
7 Div sale
7 Div sale (different item)
6.5 Div sale
4 Div sale
And finally, the boots I wanted for myself finally popped out on attempt #12!
Agony Stride
I could probably sell these for 50 div (or maybe more) if I wanted, even though they don't have perfect T1 spell suppression. I'm happy enough wearing them right now though, so they're not for sale at the moment. Two other boot crafts that were very bad whiffs haven't sold yet, but I think they should make a couple div each when/if they do sell, which should at least cover my costs for those two graveyards. Overall, this craft seems reasonably close to being guaranteed profit, at least based on my limited results (of course market conditions may change if crafts like this start flooding the SC trade site).
If anyone wants to try this for themselves, here's a screenshot of the coffin shopping list from the sudos graveyard that I built:
Coffin Shopping List
Again, the nice thing about this craft is that you can just throw the corpses in any available grave, without too much that can go wrong.
And now a long and verbose list of all my lessons learned while exploring this mechanic. Graveyard experts and anyone who isn't interested in reading my tales of sorrow and woe can probably ignore the rest of this post. :-) Those who are interested in trying this out and are unfamiliar with how the graveyard mechanic works should take note of the many mistakes that I made though.
An important note about the shopping list items: only two +Item Level coffins should be needed, as long as one of the coffins buried is ilvl 84 and none of the other coffins go below ilvl80 (this is based on my general understanding of how crafted ilvl seems to work, and what showed for me in the item properties as I buried different ilvl coffins in the graveyard...unfortunately, there's no real clear FAQ around this that I could find despite much searching, and I don't claim to be an expert on the mechanics, as I'm sure this craft is not 100% min-max'd...but the great thing – once again – is that this configuration doesn't need to be perfect to produce sellable results, as shown by the variety of sales I was able to make even with only 2 of the desired mods). If you only use ilvl 80-83 coffins, you'll have to replace one of the non-mandatory corpses with a third +Item Level to get the boots to ilvl 86, or else they can't hit the "35% movement speed" that this craft guarantees.
Another note: the shopping list from sudos is a bit misleading in spots. For some reason it says 87 trades are needed, but if you add up the actual numbers the graveyard I built is full at 88 coffins. Not sure why the summary section thinks one coffin is missing. Also, the estimated prices for coffins are much higher than I ever paid for materials in my experience. I guess if you bought everything in bulk for an instant graveyard the total cost could end up in the 7-10 div range, so that may be why it shows that high estimate. However, I was able to buy things much cheaper in a reasonably short period of time by grabbing singletons and small bulk sales (interestingly, large bulk sellers never seemed to respond to my whispers for coffins compared to normal trade site whispers...that lack of a response was consistent even when trying to buy bulk at over double the price that I was usually willing to pay, so overall I found way more success using methods like live search to pick up individual corpses than any other manner of acquiring the coffins I needed). The chaos and fracture coffins make up the majority of the cost of this graveyard, so they are the priority when buying materials. I could usually pick up the 32 chaos coffins for around 3-5c each, even in bulk. The 12 fracture coffins ranged from 10-15c each (those prices were a bit more volatile and sometimes jumped up to 20c). The speed coffins cost about 4-5c each. So again, the sudos pricing is very misleading and far too expensive IMO. I estimate that I averaged around 3 div in final costs for each graveyard, once I had a handle on the best configuration for the craft.
Basing my total costs on that 3 divine average would put my expenses at 39 divines for thirteen graveyards over the course of several days. My total revenue was approximately 200 divines from the resulting items (150 divines earned in sales plus an estimated 50 divine item that is being used on my build). That means I turned a profit of around 160 divines using this strategy! Those are pretty good numbers I'd say. The wealthy exile graph does show a much larger jump in wealth than that, to be fair, but to be completely transparent that jump in wealth also includes my normal mapping profits over that period. And that's the kicker in all of this: I was actually focused for the majority of the three days – Friday, Saturday, and Sunday – on just running maps, during which I farmed up 4 veiled orbs and a valuable assortment of div cards, scarabs, and the like. I only built graveyards as a break between chaining maps and while cooking meals/eating, and late in the day when I didn't have the energy anymore to rush maps, etc. Considering how those 4 veiled orbs were selling at 13 div on the weekend when I took the wealthy exile screenshot, and they are now estimated at 16 div apiece, though actual selling price is probably a few div higher atm, that's a lot of primary profit while getting graveyard revenue "on the side". Also, I modified my atlas to run a sbox/betrayal/necropolis strategy once I understood the true value of the graveyard mechanic, and I ended up selling a bunch of meatsack allflames (5 for 8 div) as well during this switchover in strategies. Plus there were a lot of other profits from other sales. Anyway, all that I'm trying to say here is that the wealthy exile numbers from the graph aren't very exact in terms of estimating the graveyard profits alone over these three days, given my actual playstyle was not focused on building graveyards.
One bad mistake I made at the outset of this, that I do want to share with anyone trying this kind of crafting, was to try using the "Increased chance for prefix modifier" corpses. I was disappointed when they didn't seem to help much in giving me the two prefixes and one suffix crafts like I was hoping they would (again, the most common way this craft "whiffs" is by producing two suffixes and one prefix). So I posited that weighting for more prefixes would give better odds to the craft. However, I have learned since that the "prefix" corpses don't really function as I had hoped they would, and they ended up working against the "rarer defense" corpses I was burying by increasing the defense mod weighting, and adding weight to all the possible prefix mods, which just muddied the overall pool in unwanted ways. It didn't seem to hurt things too bad in practice, and I had reasonable successes while using a few of the prefix corpses, but as I upped the number of them in my early graveyard testing and got a couple of unexpectedly poor outcomes, I chose to remove them in my later iterations after researching the actual function, and – most importantly – after understanding from the sales what was vital in achieving value.
Because the mod priority in this craft is clear and unequivocal: chaos res >> movement speed >> life. It's easy to bench craft high +life on boots if that mod is missed. The lack of landing 35% movement speed is a bit of a downer, and it's not ideal of course, but it can be reasonably fixed by bench crafting a movement speed/onslaught mod, and the boots will still sell for a tidy profit (as shown by one of my sale screenshots above). So the prefix mods are actually the lower priority in a sense, even though you want to get two of them in the best possible case. In the end, it's the lack of chaos res that can't be replaced with a bench craft. So that's why I settled on using a whopping 32 corpses of "inc% chance of chaos res", and accepted whatever RNG decided between getting 1P2S or 2P1S splits. That many chaos coffins is admittedly a large amount to have to gather, but it should give slightly more than 9 in 10 boots that land the much sought-after chaos resistance (I ran a few simulations in craftofexile around this), which from my experience is crucial in getting the expected profit out of this craft.
When pricing items to sell, I chose to be very aggressive to try for quick sales. I started out at exactly what I thought the boots might be worth, and kept lowering the price every half hour or so while going back and forth from mapping. If someone whispered a reasonable offer to me that was below my set price, I just accepted it and didn't even bother haggling. So don't take the screenshots I shared as the absolute value for each item; I suspect a few of them could probably sell for a bit more if I had tried to wait or barter a bit.
Finally, an important lesson I learned in my crafting attempts is that the "Reroll explicit modifiers 6 times" corpse does not affect fractured modifiers. Unfortunately I wasted a few of those coffins – and the opportunity cost of using that grave slot for adding more chaos res weighting – on my first couple of attempts, until I realized they were doing nothing based on the low fractured mod rolls I would sometimes get. I later confirmed that fracturing happens before rerolling, from reading a few forum posts that explained the functioning of the mechanic. At least I know I won't make that mistake ever again.
That's everything I can think of to mention. Thanks for reading all the way to the end!

2024.05.07 20:43 pavlokandyba Nibiru in New Testament

Zecharia Sitchin did an amazing job, but it is surprising that he left the New Testament texts without much attention. The information contained in them, after some amendments, significantly complements the hypothesis of the planet Nibiru and makes it more reasonable. The New Zavaet contains some astronomical details and sheds a lot of light on past and future events. The considerations that will be discussed contradict some of Sitchin's statements, but this does not pose much of a problem. I managed to find the contacts of Zecharia Sitchin's brother, who helped him with astronomical calculations and will share his ideas. He briefly thanked me for the information and said that such changes could well be made. This is not surprising because even modern astronomers, using advanced computer models, are faced with a lack of data for accurate long-term forecasts. The very first New Testament evidence of Nibiru, from which the New Testament actually begins, is the Star of Bethlehem. To date, there are several hypotheses about the appearance of the Star of Bethlehem. It is assumed that it was an unknown comet or a supernova explosion, but these versions do not have sufficient confirmation.
Nevertheless, Vallaam's "star prophecy" from the Old Testament book of numbers foreshadows the event: "I see Him, but not yet; I see Him, but not close. A star rises from Jacob."
What is known about the Star of Bethlehem from the New Testament?
When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, magicians from the east came to Jerusalem and said: Where is the King of the Jews who has been born? for we have seen his star in the east and have come to worship him—Matt. 2:1-2
They, having listened to the king, went. And behold, the star that they saw in the east went before them, until at last it came and stood over the place where the Child was. — Mf. 2:9-11
It is also known that having fulfilled its purpose, the star disappeared from the sky when the Magi came to Jerusalem so that Herod could not see it, and then returned again. Some apocryphal texts contain astronomical details not found in the canonical gospel. Usually, the Star of Bethlehem is spoken of briefly, but the First Gospel of James describes it this way: “His star rose bright, and it so surpassed all other stars in heaven in its brightness that they were no longer visible.”
In addition, the star also had other unusual features, because of which St. John Chrysostom and Blessed Theophylact of Bulgaria considered it to be a divine power: When you hear about a star, do not think that it was one of the ones we see: no, it was a divine and angelic power that appeared in the form of a star. Since the Magi were engaged in the science of the stars, the Lord led them with this, for them a familiar sign, just like Peter the fisherman, amazing with many fish, attracted to Christ. And that the star was the power of an angel is evident from the fact that it shone brightly during the day, walked when the Magi walked, shone when they did not walk: especially from the fact that it walked from the north, where Persia, to the south, where Jerusalem: but the stars never travel from north to south. - Theophylact of Bulgaria
To summarize: the star appeared in the east, was unusually bright so that it was visible during daylight hours and moved from north to south. For a while she disappeared from the sky but then reappeared.
Now let's put aside this information for a while and consider another astronomical phenomenon from the New Testament - a solar eclipse during the crucifixion of Christ, which occurred according to the scripture in 33 AD. Most of the texts only briefly say that darkness has come. The Gospel of Nicodemus reports the following details: “It was the sixth hour and darkness descended on the earth, even until the ninth hour. The sun darkened, and now the veil in the temple was torn into two parts from top to bottom. In the Gospel of Peter it is written as follows: "It was noon, and darkness found over all Judea,
Many went out with lamps, thinking that night had come... And at that moment the veil of the temple of Jerusalem was torn in two. And they took the nails out of the hands of the Lord and laid Him on the ground, and the earth shook, and there was great fear. And the sun shone again, and it turned out that it was already the ninth hour."
And Pilate, interrogating the Jews, said to them: “Did you see what happened?” And they answered the ruler: "The sun is eclipsed as it usually happens."
Thanks to the astronomical calculations carried out by scientists, it is reliably known that at that time a solar eclipse by the Moon could not have occurred. But at the same time, the New Testament claims that it happened and at the same time was unusually long.
Now we already have two evidence of unusual astronomical events, which have not yet been confirmed explanation. How do these events relate to Zecharia Sitchin's speculation about Nibiru's orbit? According to Sitchin, Nibiru has a retrograde (counterclockwise) elongated orbit at an angle to the plane of the eclipticti. At the same time, Nibiru appears in the northern hemisphere, and, crossing the plane of the orbits of the solar system, moves away in the southern. Considering that, according to the New Offset, the Star of Bethlehem was visible in the light time of day, then we can conclude that Nibiru appeared in the solar system from the direction of the sun relative to the Earth and, having a retrograde orbit, moved towards the Earth. Then given the Earth's rotation, it should have become visible from about the wee hours of rising in the east! With sufficient brightness, it could be seen after dawn, then became invisible due to sunlight and went beyond the western horizon. After that, at dawn, it again rose in the east. And moving from the northern hemisphere to the southern one, each time it gradually shifted from north to south. Now about the eclipse - could it happen due to the fact that Nibiru passed between the Sun and the Earth? According to the hypothesis of Zecharia Sitchin, Nibiru crosses the solar system in the asteroid belt beyond the orbit of Mars. This makes it impossible for the eclipse of the Sun by the planet Nibiru. Based on the previously proposed model, Nibiru, having appeared from the direction of the Sun, should, after its appearance, go around the earth and become visible at night throughout its stay in the solar system, which, according to Sitchin, lasts about 30 years.
But there is another possible option. In order for it to be possible, it is necessary to slightly correct the hypothesis of the collision of Nibiru with Tiamat and the formation of the Earth. The initial conditions remain the same. In place of the asteroid belt beyond the orbit of Mars was the large water planet Tiamat, in the current orbit of the Earth was the Moon. Nibiru burst into the solar system along an elongated retrograde orbit at an angle to the plane of the ecliptic and passed next to Tiamat, driving its satellites into it - 4 vortices from the Sumara poem about the creation of the world. Because of this, one part of Tiamat broke off and became an asteroid belt, and the other received a huge depression in the place of the Pacific Ocean and was thrown into the orbit of the Moon, where it is now becoming the Earth.
The correction that should be made to this theory concerns the orbit of Nibiru. The Earth's orbit is quite natural - having received a counter blow, it lost speed and began to fall into a lower orbit around the Sun. On the way, she was picked up by the Moon and she remained in the same orbit with her. As for Nibiru, as a result of the collision, she also received an impulse and her orbit also had to change and no longer pass through the asteroid belt. Instead, it may have, like the Earth, lost speed and switched to a lower orbit, approaching in its perihelion closer to the Sun than the Earth picked up by the Moon. Thus, there is a possibility that Nibiru can pass between the Earth and the Sun and cause an eclipse.
Prophet Amos:
"And it shall come to pass in that day, says the Lord God, that I will make the sun go down at noon, and darken the earth in the midst of the bright day."
Prophet Zechariah:
"And it will be in that day: there will be no light, the luminaries will be removed. This day will be the only one known only to the Lord: neither day or night; only in the evening will light come." Now the question arises - how close can a giant planet come to Earth for a long solar eclipse to occur and not cause a catastrophe? The Bible does not speak of any catastrophic events other than the torn veil of the temple. They are also not mentioned in history, although it is known about earthquakes in Israel before and after these events with an interval of several centuries, but not during them. Only favorable and non-catastrophic floods in the Nile are known from 30 BC. e. and until 155
At the same time, the distance at which Nibiru should approach the Earth so that its apparent size is equal to the size of the Sun and closes it is about 7,000,000 km. This is much more than the distance to the Moon of 384,400 km, but still such a proximity to the giant planet raises serious concerns. Doubting my assumptions, I asked this question to various people somehow connected with astronomy and their opinions were very divided. Most, of course, supported the opinion that the appearance of Nibiru in the solar system is catastrophic in itself. In fact, this question is not unambiguous. According to some estimates, in order for a planet the size of Nibiru to pass between the sun and the Earth without consequences, it could be between Venus and Mercury (this is about 50,000,000 km). Most likely, this would only cause the acceleration and deceleration of the Earth, the same as when it approached with the giant planets Jupiter and Saturn, which is almost imperceptible to us. The only problem is that at this distance, Nibiru will cover only a very small part of the Sun and this eclipse will be almost invisible. This does not at all coincide with the biblical text, which says that darkness enveloped the earth from noon to the ninth hour. This is much longer than the two hour duration of a normal eclipse and means that Nibiru must have passed very close.
Another opinion is that passing from the Earth at a distance of 7,000,000 km, Nibiru will not cause any catastrophic consequences.
The fact that Nibiru moves in a retrograde orbit opposite to the Earth significantly reduces the time spent by the planets close to each other. This reduces the interaction time of gravitational forces. If the planets were moving towards a meeting fast enough , they could simply slip through each other by inertia. If you take a magnet and move it quickly past another magnet, the attraction you feel will be short-lived and not at all the same as if you do it slowly. Of course, this will cause some deviations in the speed and orbit of the planets. The orbit of the Earth will become a little closer to the Sun, this will only affect as a warming of the climate with consequences like floods in the Nile and no more.
It looks like this assumption will be the subject of endless criticism, but it gives something else. First, it removes the controversy from Sitchin's flood hypothesis. He wrote that the Flood was caused by the approach of the Earth to Nibiru, which caused the glaciers to split. Such an approach would not be possible if Nibiru crossed the solar system in the asteroid belt, much further than the safe distance. It is quite another matter when Nibiru almost crosses the orbit of the Earth.
Secondly, it gives a different chronology for the appearance of Nibiru in the solar system, which roughly coincides with some significant events. Moreover, this version differs from Stchin's chronology by only about 500 years. This may well be explained by Nibiru's high-altitude years, which average 3600 years, or by a gradual change in its orbit. Such a disparity could well have developed over a long period of time.
If we take the year 0 of the birth of Christ as the starting point and count back two periods of 3600 years, we get an interesting coincidence. Around 7500 B.C. (a difference of 200 years) climate changes have occurred on Earth, which are associated with a global cataclysm. In 7220 BC. e. there was an eruption of Mount Edgecumb volcano in Alaska and a large outflow of fresh water from the Black Sea into the Aegean Sea, which could be the result of the approach of Nibiru. And the greatest cataclysm occurred in 7640 BC. e. There is a theory that Tolman's hypothetical comet hit the Earth, but little is known about this.
3879 years after that, in 3761 BC. e., according to the Bible, the creation of the world took place. After 3761 years, year 0 has come - a new starting point has been assigned. These intervals differ from the period of 3600 years by a couple of centuries, which may have different explanations. One way or another, the next appearance of Nibiru should occur around the year 3600.
This is not the only information from the New Testament texts. They contain other interesting records that can shed light not only on the past of human civilization, but also on the future. Indeed, in this case, the New Testament is the message of the Anunnaki specifically to us, people living today. This is exactly what its name implies

2024.05.07 19:19 depressioun This one mistake is costing you millions of views

You might be surprised, but one crucial mistake creators make is neglecting the retention graph. This graph is vital for understanding how viewers engage with your Reels.
Understanding the Retention Graph
The retention graph shows you exactly where viewers lose interest in your content. Let's say you create a 30-second Reel, and 100 people watch it. To reach a million views, you ideally want to retain at least 60% of viewers throughout the entire video. This means after the initial hook (around 3 seconds), you need to keep viewers engaged for the next 7-10 seconds. If you achieve this, the algorithm recognizes your Reel as valuable and pushes it to a wider audience.
How to Keep Viewers Hooked
So, how do you maintain viewer interest? The answer lies in understanding your target audience and applying strategic editing techniques. Remember, you're competing for attention, so you need to constantly give viewers something to hold onto.
Here are some editing tricks to keep viewers engaged:
Multiple B-rolls: Cut between different shots to add variety and visual interest. This technique is particularly effective for breaking up longer stretches of talking-head footage or showcasing different elements of a product or concept.
Camera angle changes: Shifting perspectives can keep viewers guessing and prevent boredom. Experiment with wide shots, close-ups, and dutch angles to create a dynamic viewing experience.
Color grading and layering: Experiment with color palettes and visual layers to create a dynamic aesthetic. Consider incorporating your brand colors or using color palettes that complement your content's mood and theme. You can also add text overlays, graphics, and other visual elements to further engage viewe
** Editing style** Add multiple elements like sound effects, movie scenes wherever necessary, famous memes, current trends, fancy transitions, visual effects random elements to explain your point, key is to keep them hook throughout the reel
My Aha Moment: Retention is Key
After creating hundreds of Reels, I noticed a pattern. The Reels with the highest view counts all shared a common factor: a strong retention graph. My Reels typically run between 10-15 seconds, and the ones that reached a million views consistently held viewers' attention for 10-12 seconds. This made me realize that watch time is the most critical metric. Audiences typically lose interest after three seconds, so a strong hook alone wasn't enough. My content after the hook needed to be equally engaging to prevent viewers from dropping off.
Based on this insight, I made minor editing changes and experimented with different content types to make them more captivating. As a result, nearly every other Reel started hitting the million-view mark.
The Power of Retention
I've included screenshots of two Reel insights with their retention graphs. The first Reel boasts a 97% retention rate at the beginning due to a powerful hook. However, the content following the hook wasn't as engaging, causing a drop to just 15% retention after 7 seconds. This translates to only 15 viewers out of 100 remaining after that point.
In contrast, the second Reel retains almost 75% of its audience after 7 seconds, and 60% after 10 seconds. This particular Reel currently has 7 million views (the screenshot was taken a day after posting, with 1.2 million views from replays and initial plays).
The Takeaway: Beyond the Hook
Both Reels have fantastic hooks, but only one achieved the coveted million views. This highlights the crucial role of post-hook content. A strong hook grabs attention, but you need engaging content throughout your Reel to keep viewers watching until the end.
In today's world of short attention spans, it's essential to retain at least 50% of your audience for half the duration of your Reel. By focusing on retention strategies, you can convert viewers who initially click on your Reel into viewers who watch the entire thing. Also I tried to format my write up properly this time I hope you liked it.

2024.05.07 19:03 Dismal_Road_2365 Is photo feeler reliable, especially when it comes to women rating men attractiveness.

I got rated as a 6 y women below 40 years old so I felt pretty good.
I'm puzzled because of 2 information:
  1. In one hand I know that women rate men WAY lower than men so women who see me as a 6 is like is equivalent to me seeing them as 8s 2 But I remembered that photofeeler adjusts rating to average everything. Therefore, a bad rating(let's say a 3) coming from a person who rates everyone low will actually be counted as 5. Therefore, my rating of 6 is actually a 6? Wich would make sense as I'v seen a couple (questionable) graphs and they all suggest that women give 6 to less than 5% of men. And although I'm nowhere near ugly I find it as much unlikely to be part of the top 5% of men (even top 0.3 in some cases) in terms of physical attractiveness Note: IDK how much photofeeler adjusts values. Those 3 and 5 were just and example.

2024.05.07 17:00 Internal-Side-9600 My friends think that me and my crush are dating

There is a lot to talk about, I will try to keep it chronological. Sorry if this is a long post.
Today was one of the weirder conversations during lunchtime which I won't be explaining because it's insignificant to what is important. Me and my crush (we'll call him K) were talking about how weird our friend group is so I said that we need a graph that shows how weird everyone is in comparison to something else. That something else would be how gay they are assumed to be. I made a joke that everyone would be maximum of both, to which K responded "I don't think 'gay' is the right word to describe my sexuality" (not necessarily saying he's 100% straight (and I have proof on why but that would be a different post)) He also does make jokes about being somewhat homo so idk about that anymore.
Later on, one of my friends (we'll call him L) decided to resurface a rumour from a few months ago that me and K are dating. So I tried to leave the conversation and make it stop, but it looks like it's going to be brought up multiple times a day for the next few weeks.
There is no proof that we're dating (though I would be happy if it were true) but a large part of my friend group thinks we're together. I assume it's because I'm best friends with him and everyone suspects he's gay.
This is also not the first time K has been shipped with someone. And those rumours went on for weeks. And all other times, he embraced it as a joke and it stopped quicker. The issue is, if I do that they'll think "Oh he said it, so it's 100% true" because that's more the type of person I am.
I don't know what I want to achieve with this post but if I do ever tell my crush my feelings about him, this whole event will make it a lot weirder.
I feel like there was a lot of unimportant information in this post, sorry about that.
TLDR: One of my friends started a rumour that me and my crush are dating with absolutely no evidence.

2024.05.07 16:47 Unique_Bit824 It's Asthma and Air Quality Awareness Week! This subreddit is sponsored by the MamaBear Health Smartphone App, which is available on the app and Google Play stores.

Air Pollution and Asthma

Air pollution can cause asthma and other lung diseases. It also worsens asthma symptoms, leads to increased hospital visits, and can cause early death.

What Is Air Pollution?

Air pollution is the contamination of the air with substances that harm human health or the environment. The pollutants may be gases, chemicals, or small particles.
Air pollution can increase your risk of getting asthma or can worsen your symptoms if you already have asthma.
Airborne Particles
Small airborne particles, such as those found in haze, smoke, soot, and dust, can lead to serious air quality problems.
Small airborne particles are called “particulate matter” or PM. The smallest particles (PM2.5) are the most dangerous. They can get deep into the lungs or even your blood.
People with asthma are at greater risk from breathing in small particles and irritating gases. They can irritate the airways and make asthma worse.1
Ozone (O3)
Ozone, a gas, is one of the most common air pollutants. Ozone is helpful in the upper atmosphere but causes problems when it is found closer to the ground in the air we breathe. Ground-level ozone is part of “smog” or haze. It is most common in cities where there are more cars and use of fossil fuels. It is also more common in the summer when there is more sunlight, heat, and low winds. Ground-level ozone is created by chemical reactions between burning fuel emissions and volatile organic compounds (VOC), heat, and sunlight. It is associated with worsening respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Ozone triggers asthma because it is very irritating to the lungs and airways.
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), Sulfur dioxide (SO2), Carbon monoxide (CO), Methane (CH4)
Other gases can also affect your health and environment.
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) comes from burning fuels. It also forms from emissions from cars, trucks, other vehicles, and power plants. It is part of smog (haze). Breathing in NO2 can cause someone to develop asthma. It can worsen lung disease, especially asthma.3
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) comes from burning fossil fuels, transportation, volcanoes, and industrial processes. It can be found in smog or haze. SO2 can harm plants (including trees). It can harm your lungs and lead to health problems.4
Carbon monoxide (CO) forms from incomplete combustion of fuels and wood. It has no smell. It can be very dangerous when it builds up inside buildings, homes, and cars.
Methane (CH4) is another gas that is part of air pollution. It mostly comes from animal agriculture and in subarctic regions where it is released from melting permafrost. Fossil fuels (oil, gas, coal) and waste (food, landfills, wastewater) also add methane to the air. Methane is 30 times more potent at trapping heat than carbon dioxide (CO2) as a major greenhouse gas, worsening the climate crisis. Methane can turn into ground-level ozone, which is harmful to human health.5
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines air pollution as “any visible or invisible particle or gas found in the air that is not part of the natural composition.”

How Does Air Pollution Affect Asthma and Health?

Small particles and gases in the air can pass through your nose or mouth and get into your lungs and blood. Both long-term and short-term exposure to air pollution can cause many health problems.
Breathing in air pollution can cause:

Who is at the most risk from air pollution?

At high levels, air pollution can be harmful to everyone. But even lower levels of air pollution can harm health.
The groups most at risk from the harmful effects of air pollution include:
