Narrowing down application
I’m trying to finalize my med school application list and I’m at 29 schools when I really want to narrow it down to 20. All of these schools fall right at or below my stats and have out of state applicant odds that I could theoretically meet. So now I’m trying to narrow down my list based on if schools use nbme exams for preclinical years and if they require you to do away rotations. I’m having a hard time finding this information online though so if you have any knowledge about any of the schools I have favorited I would greatly appreciate your input!

2024.05.28 00:29 hyunchong02 Help, ORM reapplicant applying to 42 schools with 519 MCAT, 3.95s GPA

Firstly, sorry for the clickbait/shit post title, but I could really use some advice on my school selection. I didn't have any luck last cycle, but I'm hopeful to get in this year and I'm not pulling any punches by applying to 42 schools from 22 schools last year. Overkill? Probably, but I'm in my second gap year and my MCAT will expire next cycle. TBH, I'm applying to many schools I don't know much about besides OOS acceptance rate and MCAT average. Should I start by submitting a few schools and then add more as I research them or just go all in and add 40-something schools tomorrow?
My biggest weaknesses last cycle was my writing, a late September submission, and a lack of leadership XP(which I didn't adequately explain was a consequence of being a commuting undergrad student working full time supporting my family's restaurant). Another minor weakness I have is a lack of ongoing research experience. I did research for a semester with a poster presentation in undergrad(300hrs), so I did enough to check-off boxes, but that pales in comparison to most top applicants. With that in mind, in the past year, I've revamped my PS(much stronger IMO with a clearer answestory to "why become a doctor"), continued working as an MA(2100hrs), and maintained my non-clinical volunteer activities(~800 hrs) with added experience working as a 911 EMT(700 hrs).
Anyways, regarding school selection, I'm reluctant to add any T10 school considering my poor results last cycle even though I only applied to a single T10(which was an accident lol). T20-30 are all in my stat range, but IDK if my 2 gap years' worth of clinical XP is enough to offset their usual focus on research to make them my high-target schools.

2024.05.28 00:07 No_Initiative8612 Top AI Voice Notes Tools for Busy Professionals

As a busy professional, managing meeting notes and staying organized can be quite a challenge. I've found that using AI voice notes tools can be a game-changer for productivity. Here are a few top tools that I've found particularly helpful:
  1. Vomo.ai: This tool is fantastic for transcribing meetings and generating summaries. It uses advanced models like nova-2 and Whisper for accurate transcription and GPT-4o for AI-driven analysis. There are no limits on transcription length or quantity, and it’s very affordable after a 7-day free trial.
  2. Otter.ai: Another great option for real-time transcription and note-taking. It’s very user-friendly and integrates well with other tools.
  3. Google Recorder: If you’re on Android, this is a solid choice for quick and accurate voice transcription. It’s free and integrates seamlessly with Google services.
Using these tools can save you a lot of time and help keep your notes organized and actionable. Give them a try and see which one works best for your workflow!

2024.05.26 22:40 JollyObjective4407 Florida online MPA programs

I just finished my bachelors in emergency management and now plotting on working towards my masters degree. I’m currently an officer in my fire department that’s looking to advance higher in my organization.
Colleges I’m looking at and not opposed to other suggestions. Any feedback on the schools? -Nova Southeastern University -UCF -USF -FIU -University of Western Florida

2024.05.26 08:16 PiePrior8378 UMich vs NSU BSDO (PLEASE HELP!!)

Hey! So I just got into Umich off their waitlist at LSA. I am currently enrolled in NOVA Southeastern’s BS/DO program, and I am not sure which one to choose.
On one hand, it is nice to have that guaranteed med, knowing how hard it is to get into med school. In addition, the program lets me apply out, so I can apply to an MD or a better medical college if I want to. Also, it has great medical opportunities in the area, and I can most likely rank higher at NSU than I would at UMich grades-wise. However, the social environment is not very great. In addition, I won’t be able to challenge myself as I would at UMich. In addition, I would rather be an MD than a DO, bc typically DO’s match into IM or family medicine, but I am not sure what type of doctor I want to be yet. I don’t know if i’m ready to limit my options in the future, but i’d rather be any doctor than no doctor at all if I end up not getting into medical school if I don’t choose NSU.
UMich will provide me with challenges to allow me to grow intelectly. Being surrounded by dedicated students will 100% motivate me to work hard. In addition, UMich is a T20 which may add weight during Med School applications if I am able to succeed, and the social environment is great, so I know I will have fun. Plus, going to UMich is an opportunity of a lifetime. Obviously, UMich has great internship and medical opportunities, but I would not have the security of knowing I will 100% go to medical school. In addition, it maybe harder for me to maintain my grades and compete with the other premeds at UMich
I am STRUGGLING to decide, and I have until the 29th to decide, so PLEASE give me your insight on what you think I should choose.

2024.05.26 03:21 therealclintk02 Failed 4 classes and retook a class 3 times within 4 years. Planning on transferring out of state and starting over.

Warning: Rant
I recently failed 2 classes this previous semester (spring 2024) with an F. It was BIO 142 and ECO 2002. I felt so bad that I didn't tell my parents this and ended up nearly offing myself out of embarrassment and had to get professional help all within the past month. (I don't care how bad you fail in life, do not ever think of taking your life).
So I've been going to NOVA for the past 3 years. I initially started off taking the AS Engineering degree because that was my main interest. Since high school I always had this interest in technology and how things worked. However, the first year (2021) there were a lot of mishaps. Originally I was supposed to attend Virginia State University Fall of 2020 but I withdrew because my parents couldn't afford my tuition and we weren't interested in loans at the time. NOVA turned out to be a last minute decision but still a decision nonetheless.
I had to take these placement exams that landed me in developmental math and reading classes for the spring of 2021 at Nova and I initially ended up doing good and completing them (they're developmental classes so). However, summer 2021 was what really screwed me over. I took 3 classes, Logic, ENG 111, and CST 100 but failed both ENG 111 and CST 100. My study skills were horrendous at the time and I wasn't yet used to the college work pace. This brought my GPA from a 4.0 to 1.5. I was more focused on work and taking care of stuff at home that I gave little to no time to my studies. Moving on to fall of that year, I took 3 classes and got a C and D in CST 110 and ECO 201 but failed precalculus. My math skills were already weak because I struggled with algebra in high school and didn't get to finish algebra 2 my senior year cause COVID cut the year short in March of 2020. At this point I decided to switch to a Health Science major because I felt like the medical field would fit me.
I went into spring of 2022 taking Human Anatomy and thought it would be an easy biology class but boy was I wrong. I failed horribly and got a D in both ENG 111 and PSY 200. I started realizing that there was a problem, I wasn't able to really balance out my life, work and school. I started getting depression and these thoughts of being behind cause some friends I knew already transferred. I decided to retake PSY 200 summer of 2022 just to get a worse grade and fail. I did however pass ENG 112 with and A. My first A in a while at the time. Now moving on to fall of 2022, I couldn't retake BIO 141 till I took a placement course and so I took Foundations of Life Sciences. I also took intercultural communications as it was a required class in my transcript. I managed to pass both of them with an A and B.
Moving on to 2023. I started working an all nightshift job midway through the semester and was able to retake BIO 141 again. I also took quantitative reasoning. I started of the semester pretty good passing tests and completing assignments until mid term I slipped up and just started being inconsistent. My sleep schedule and my personality started changing and my priorities became distorted. I had to drop BIO 141 unfortunately and got a D in quantitative reasoning. My GPA dropped from a 2.0 to 1.9 again. I retook ECO 201 (a class I got a D on in Fall of 2021) in summer 2023 and failed. My parents were upset and rightfully so. I had to do everything in my power to pass the next class I took in fall of 2023 which would be BIO 141 AGAIN and really focus. Having prior experience, I started off consistent and was doing good. I started slipping of a bit mid semester till I really told my self if I wanted to move ahead, I NEEDED to pass this class. I have no choice but to and ended up getting a C. Not the best grade I wanted but it was enough to get me into taking BIO 142.
Now as of recently, I started off Spring of 2024 taking 2 classes. BIO 142 and ECO 202. The semester has been up and down and its been like my mind had just been all over the place. Dealing with stuff at home and distractions and inability to focus, I was barely getting through it in BIO 142. It got to the point where I was so focused on one class and I ignored the other class and ended up failing ECO 202. There were no other assignments and the grades for my ECO 202 class were based solely on test grades (not trying to make any excuses). Around the end of the semester (late April), even one of my teachers told me I could have done better had I just got some assignments completed, and I agreed. However, it was also the fact that I just wasnt' sure where I was going.
If I stayed at NOVA trying to complete this Health Science degree, I would have to retake a whole bunch of classes because those Ds wont cut it. That would prolong the process and it would also be the fact that I've spent almost 4 years at a 2 year community college just retaking classes and going no where. My plan is to move out of state and start over at another community college but man I just feel like a freaking failure.
P.S. I you read through this thank you so much for your attention and time!

Hi! I've been researching with reddit, admit.org, and MSAR for the past two days straight and I am cooked. I've come up with a more or less final medical school list. I have posted before here but would appreciate a comprehensive and final look. I did prefer staying closer to GA to an extent and removed some schools due to extreme cold weather. I'd appreciate some blunt feedback and suggestions. Any that I should remove or add because of stats, extremely specific mission, or OOS?

Need help narrowing down school list
Hi!
So ideally I would like to apply to 23-25 MD schools, but currently have 27 on my list. (also applying to 6 DO schools not listed, so it's just a lot of secondaries). I am reapplying and know that I got burnt out on secondaries last time and didn't end up finishing/submitting some of them and don't want to make the same mistake/waste money again.
I need help on which ones to lose. My dilemma is what's more important- OOS friendly or MCAT when things are close. For example my MCAT is a 513. Should I apply to the school with 515 average but like 85% are OOS students or to the school with a 512 average but only 62% are OOS students.
GPA is 3.67
clinical hours: 2200 (medical assistant, and a medical internship)
non-clinical hours: 1500 (substitute teacher, nanny, and worked for sports arena in college)
clinical volunteering: 200 (at hospital)
non-clinical volunteering: 200 hours (young ladies in foster care)
shadowing: 100ish hours (about 60 with 1 doc and the rest among various specialties)
Club: leadership club in college
research: 100 (with poster and pub in undergrad journal)
hobbies: baking (sourdough bread!) and traveling (i backpacked europe alone)
Edit: added EC details
I'm a FL resident so all florida schools say 100% since I'm in state and it doesn't matter.

2024.05.23 01:24 No_Initiative8612 Tools to Boost Meeting Efficiency

I've been looking for ways to make my meetings more efficient, and I thought I'd share a few tools that have made a big difference for me:
  1. Vomo.ai: This tool has been a game-changer for transcribing meetings. It uses advanced models like nova-2 and Whisper for accurate transcription and GPT-4o for generating concise summaries and action items. This means you can easily review and organize your meeting notes without missing any important details. Plus, it offers a 7-day free trial and costs around $10 per month, making it an affordable option.
  2. Notion: Notion is great for organizing all your meeting notes in one place. You can create templates for different types of meetings and collaborate with your team in real-time. It also integrates well with other productivity tools.
  3. Zoom: While Zoom is widely known for video conferencing, its built-in recording feature is quite handy. You can record meetings and then use a transcription tool like Vomo to transcribe and summarize the content.
  4. Slack: For quick, asynchronous meetings and follow-ups, Slack is invaluable. You can create channels for different projects and easily share updates and action items with your team.
These tools have significantly improved my meeting efficiency and overall workflow.

2024.05.22 03:12 8ta4 Seeking Speech-to-Text API Recommendations: Word-Level Probabilities, High Accuracy, Low Latency

Are there any speech-to-text APIs that can give word-level probabilities, match or beat Deepgram in accuracy, and have low latency for short audio?
About a month ago, I shared my experience with Deepgram on this subreddit, and the response was incredible. Recently, u/111ewe111 asked me what specific issues I was having with Deepgram. So, I thought I'd make this new post to answer those questions and the feedback I got since my needs have changed.
Here's what I need from a speech-to-text API, in order of importance:
  1. Word-level probability: I need a probability for each word in the transcript.
  2. Accuracy: The API must be accurate, especially for common words in clear audio, finalizing the transcription only after the user finishes a sentence to make sure full context is considered.
  3. Latency: The API needs to be fast, ideally under 0.25 seconds per call for a single sentence.
  4. Cost: It should be affordable, aiming for under $1.215 per hour.
  5. Cross-origin resource sharing (CORS): This isn't a must-have, but it would be nice if the API supports CORS for direct use from the browser.
Comparing speech-to-text API accuracy has been fruitful, like comparing apples to oranges, as many providers claim their solution is the best. This self-serving marketing makes it hard to determine the true accuracy of each API.
I checked out a bunch of APIs that Deepgram mentioned in their blog post "Best Speech-to-Text APIs in 2024." Only the Nova-2 model from Deepgram and the Whisper API from OpenAI were able to return the API call within one second. But the Whisper API that OpenAI provides doesn't give you word-level probabilities. That's a dealbreaker.
Deepgram claims to be the most accurate and fastest API, but I ran into two issues:
  1. Latency: Deepgram usually takes about 0.5 seconds to return a transcript for a single sentence. Most of this time is spent on TCP slow start, making the network the bottleneck.
  2. CORS: Deepgram doesn't support CORS, which is a bummer for browser-based apps.
Most speech-to-text providers give you options like a streaming API and a prerecorded API. Take Deepgram, for example.
With their streaming API, you get low latency because it processes the audio bit by bit as it comes in. But it might end up finalizing the transcription in the middle of a sentence. When that happens, the API loses the context for the rest of what's being said, which can sacrifice accuracy.
Now, if you go with their prerecorded API, you'll probably get better accuracy since it looks at the full context of the audio. However, you're sending the whole audio file over, which can run into TCP slow start issues.
There are a few potential solutions:
To give you a bit more context, I'm designing an app that checks pronunciation. The goal is for the whole process to take less than a second. This involves three API calls: two for speech-to-text and one for text-to-speech. The text-to-speech call takes about 0.5 seconds, so each speech-to-text call needs to be around 0.25 seconds. I'm still figuring out if this is even possible. If you want to give me some feedback on the design, here's the link!
All the latency numbers in this post were tested using Google Colab. It runs on Google's infrastructure, which helps minimize network latency. This way, I can be pretty sure that the network itself isn't the bottleneck during these tests.
Now, let’s talk about cost. I have a budget of $100 per month, assuming 30 hours of usage each month. That gives me:
$$\frac{\$100}{30 \text{ hours}} \approx \$3.33 \text{ per hour}$$
I have three API calls: two for speech-to-text and one for text-to-speech. Let's estimate the number of characters processed in an hour. Assuming a fast speaker at 200 words per minute and 5 characters per word, I get:
$$200 \text{ words/min} \times 60 \text{ min/hour} \times 5 \text{ characters/word} = 60,000 \text{ characters/hour}$$
I'll use OpenAI's text-to-speech API, which costs $15 per million characters. The cost per hour for text-to-speech is:
$$60,000 \text{ characters/hour} \times \frac{\$15}{1,000,000 \text{ characters}} = \$0.90 \text{ per hour}$$
Next, I subtract the text-to-speech cost from my total hourly budget:
$$\$3.33 - \$0.90 = \$2.43 \text{ per hour}$$
This $2.43 covers my two speech-to-text API calls:
$$\frac{\$2.43}{2} = \$1.215 \text{ per hour}$$
Given all these requirements and challenges, I'm looking for recommendations for speech-to-text APIs.

2024.05.21 21:31 No_Initiative8612 How to Delegate Meeting Notes to AI

If you’re tired of manually taking meeting notes and trying to keep up with all the details, it might be time to consider delegating this task to AI. Here's how you can do it effectively:
  1. Choose the Right Tool: Look for a transcription service that fits your needs. One tool I recommend is Vomo.ai. It’s designed to handle audio transcription accurately and efficiently.
  2. Record Your Meetings: Whether you’re using Zoom, Google Meet, or any other platform, make sure to record your meetings. With Vomo, you can directly upload these recordings for transcription.
  3. Automate Transcription: Vomo uses advanced models like nova-2 and Whisper to ensure high accuracy in transcription. There’s no limit on transcription time or quantity, which is great for lengthy meetings.
  4. AI Analysis: Beyond just transcribing, Vomo leverages GPT-4o to provide AI analysis. This means you get concise summaries and action items extracted from your transcriptions, saving you even more time.
  5. Share and Collaborate: Once your meeting is transcribed and summarized, you can easily share the notes and action items with your team. Vomo allows you to generate note links, making it simple to distribute the information.
  6. Affordable and Accessible: One of the best parts about Vomo is that it offers a 7-day free trial, and the subscription is about $10 per month, making it a very affordable option.
By using AI to handle meeting notes, you can focus more on participating in the meeting rather than worrying about capturing every detail. Give it a try and see how much more efficient your workflow can become!

2024.05.21 14:57 yourfavaccountant1 Is Nova Southeastern worth it?

I all, I’ve tried doing my research but couldn’t really find much opinions on this. Is it worth it to get a nursing degree from Nova Southeastern? I’m not too concerned about how the school runs lectures/etc, what I am concerned about is whether the school is worth it (i.e, passing NCLEX, securing a job). Essentially what is the schools/nurses who attended the school reputation in the world of healthcare?
Any advice/opinions would be appreciated!
Thank you in advance

2024.05.20 19:10 Weary-Cartographer10 3rd time applicant app review

Hey everyone, I am a reapplicant and it looks like I am going to have to apply for a third time. Just looking for thoughts about what y'all think.
Here is the breakdown. I am an ORM south asian male from Texas. I graduated in 2022 with a cGPA of 3.67 (~3.9-4.0 student until the pandemic my junior year when I entered my "flop era" as I call it, characterized by Bs and a single C in the year. During my senior year my GPA would trend upwards again to mostly As and a B each semester in physics.)
MCAT was taken 3 times, twice during my first cycle where I would score a 507 and a 509. During my second cycle I would make a 510.
I had some scholarships giving me $33,000 a year for tuition, I was Dean's list in the beginning and end of my college career, and I did graduate magna cum laude.
For research, I was a part of 4 different projects, one poster at a convention my freshman year for the first project, and presentations at my campus for the last 2 projects, the 2nd project was left unfinished when my PI left and the pandemic started.
150 hours of volunteering at a big hospital here.
70 hours of volunteering with the American Red Cross.
200 hours of clinical volunteering in primary care.
1300 hours of being a medical scribe after graduating in 2022.
700 hours of being a medical assistant after leaving my scribing job in 2023 (Working for my physician parent's clinic after they were understaffed badly for several months).
Extracurriculars include programming (HTML/CSS, Java, Python), making music (guitar, clarinet, producing, used to teach guitar during the pandemic), sketching, weight-lifting (everyday thing for years now), learning languages (Speak Japanese, Hindi, and am working on Spanish)
First cycle one MD interview, a lot of uncompleted secondaries, applied kind of late (I was not prepared for how much writing there would be and did not submit many secondaries unfortunately)
Second cycle one DO waitlist, applied 1st or second day that TMDSAS and AMCAS opened.
Since the last application, I completed a certificate of public heatlh with a GPA of 3.81 and will be starting my Master's at the same school in the fall. My projects at this school have been focused around diabetes prevention due to my experiences.
I have become a research assistant at a large hospital in my city clocking in 720 hours by the time I submit my application. Here I work mainly in producing a cell bank for a multitude of labs in the hospital.
I have also been volunteering at the food bank regularly clocking in 40 hours by the time I submit the application and am now a volunteer leader.
School list:
Baylor
University of Houston
McGovern
Sam Houston State University
UTMB
Texas A&M
Texas Tech El Paso
Texas Tech Lubbock
TCOM
UT Rio Grande Valley
UT Southwestern
UT Tyler
Florida Atlantic University
Rosalind Franklin University
Nova Southeastern
University of Colorado
VCOM
LECOM
PCOM
Pikeville COM
As far as my Personal Statement, I revamped it around the experiences I had during the last year, involving the loss of my friend to cancer leading to me working in the lab I currently do/my experiences with obesity and weight loss, motivating my projects for graduate school.
Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

2024.05.20 08:00 KappyWappertol Nova Southeastern University MD

I recently got accepted into NSU MD. And considering it’s my only acceptance, I was highly excited to get in. But upon going over the posts and feedback about the school, I am scared that I made a bad choice. I’ve heard some people say the school is well reputed and has a good residency matching process, but then you go online and read a lot of horror stories. Did I make a mistake?
