2024.05.19 13:17 petemyster How do you apply timber span tables to a timber base resting on plinths?

I am looking to build a timber base for an outside office, roughly 6.5m x 3m. Researching online, I think the method I want to use is to use high density blocks or plinths to rest the frame on.
I understand how to apply span tables to the joists, but I don’t understand how to apply the span tables to the beams. For example, many guides online have effectively a double width timber rectangle (the beams), and then run the joists along the inside of the rectangle and apply the span table to those joists, attaching them to the beams with joist hangers. But the length of the beams (the perimeter of the base) isn’t continuously supported underneath it (as plinths are spaced at some arbitrary/unknown spacing). Each beam therefore takes the weight being carried by several joists and no one seems to highlight this or justify how they know the beam can take that weight.
I don’t know how to calculate the plinth spacing. Can someone shed (pun intended) some light on this for me please? Thanks

2024.05.19 08:16 No-Clothes8250 Why does Nahyuta get so much more hate than every other prosecutor? (Series spoilers)

People are viciously hateful to Nahyuta, and I won't deny he's a prick, but he inspires this strange hatred despite not being that much worse than any other prosecutor. Let's go down the list -
Nahyuta... is a smug prick. Yeah, he's probably secured false convictions, but only Blackquill and Godot can be said to be probably innocent of that and Godot is the only certain example because we see every one of his prosecution cases. Besides, you can see how compelling the evidence is with divination stuff is, and it's not liked he asked for the DCA.
I'm really confused why he gets so much hate. I thought he was an Edgeworth figure, a huge prick but pitiable and sympathetic nonetheless.

2024.05.19 06:47 ApatosaurusHans Weekend Thunderstorm Activity: Let's Explore Wadsworth (Trip Report)

Another weekend, another ominous thunderstorm and accompanying rain keeping me from playing outside. Checking out stores >> getting struck by lightening. Today’s journey took me towards Lakewood because I didn’t want to sit in the I-25 parking lot but still wanted to get south/west-ish after not being able to even get a parking spot at REI for their big sale event - so with the storm in mind and time to kill, that’s where I ended up.
Without further ado, starting from Hwy 6 since that's about where I-25 ground to a halt, and Wadsworth, going south:
Bingo AJ Liquors - shooters and minimal shelfers - Rating: Don’t bother
Spirit Shop (Belmar Crossing) - mostly shelfers with some okish bottles up top behind the counter but nothing that was ‘wow’. Didn’t bother to ask for prices on those. Ok pricing on stuff that was elsewhere on wall. Not a giant selection, but if you live nearby… ok whatever. Rating: not making a return trip.
Mile High Wine Spirits - Belmar - Relatively plain selection with decent variety of non-shelfers, ok prices, nothing special though. A few store picks in boxes near the front. Rating - probably won’t drive across the city on a return trip, but not bad either.
Quality Discount Liquor Wads - Not even standard shelfers - Rating: don’t bother
Giant Discount Liquors - Basic shelfer selection with some local bottles thrown in. I can appreciate that. Good stuff super marked up behind counter. Example: 200 JD10 and Bowman. Pass. A OF SiBBP (probably a CO pick)… didn’t see price, but based on the other stuff up there, asking would have just left me disappointed. Rating: Pass.
Wads Liquor and Wine - 5x Weller greens happily on a shelf, 4x EHT smb tubes 'bout 150. 2x Horsey Juices 115ish. A BT fanboy or someone who was riding the hype train with money to burn would be happy here. I would be if I was on the hype train, but I kept on going… MM BEP 75ish. KC12 75 (kind of my bellwether, a store generally gets an ‘A’ if KC12 is in the 60s. Overall sentiment: fair prices and decent selection. Would return if I was in the area just to look around.
Trading Post Liquors - fairly wide and diverse selection out on the shelf for a non-mega store. However, anything even remotely “special” was pretty marked up behind the counter. JD10 for 200 ish etc… Rating: If I lived nearby, I’d probably occasionally hit it up to support local.
Quincy Costco - Willet 4yr Rye 65, both Larceny A124 & C923 - 55. Need to give the liquor manager a high five for picking good stuff. Other bottles were present, of course, but these two at their respective price points piqued my interest. After one of the posts last night about A124, I had a hard time not picking up a bottle for a rainy day, no pun intended. Rating: Top Costco in front range for hard liquor, followed closely by DIA. Worth the drive.
TW Littleton & Centennial - Littleton seemed to be price matching Costco - because they too had 65 4yr Willet rye. A later stop at the Centennial TW had it closer to 90 like a lot of other places. Can’t blame them for trying I guess!
I was overall surprised to see Bardstown offerings come down in price… a sign of bourbon deflation? A sign of the economy? A thrust for market share? Their own 6 year juice being ready? Bardstown White label Origin 38, Black label Origin BiB 43, Red Disco 9 140, Rye for 51.
Also had the lowest prices on Michters standard offerings I’ve seen, in the < 45 range. Finally, it seemed they’re really pushing their house brands, particularly Walcott. At least it says that it’s Barton right on the front. Why do I say this? There didn't seem to be as much variety in store picks as I remember a few months ago, but there were shelves and shelves and boxes of their house brands.
That's it for today!
Disclaimer: Note that my trip reports are specifically in the context of looking for (primary American) whiskey & bourbon that I’m interested in - not necessarily hunting for allocated bottles, just looking out for things that I’d like to try that I probably read a review of on one of the bourbon/whiskey subs here. I would not turn down a WFP or gold top horse juice if I saw one for a good price, but I have a personal rule about not paying much more than MSRP - there’s too much good stuff out there to try instead.
Instead, when I'm out, I like to drive around and look for "holes in the wall" that might be worth returning to in the future should I be in the specific part of town visiting a friend, or something like that. A place with good prices or a good selection, or ideally both. Plus I get to see other parts of town I've never been to. People who post their stories of favorite stores or epic finds here got me started and have resulted in some great finds for myself, so I'm returning the favor.

2024.05.19 06:09 Dependent_Ad9014 An idea I thought of for a silent hill game were are 4 characters you can play as each with there own troubled past

I was driving in my car when I thought of the silent hill games and after 4 they went really down hill (pun intended) mostly picking ideals that could have worked but fail short due to execution and how they handle characters but enough of that you came the idea well I want to make a silent hill game were there are 4 characters you play as each with a unique style of play and character the first being Xìngcún zhě a Chinese grandma from world War 2 that was a survivor of the Japanese invasion lookingfor her grandson, an ex mexican carlet man name Joel that is looking for his daughter, a widowed wife named sana that came to buried her husband ashes in his home town of silent hill that turns out her husband was suffering from depression, Jericho a paranormal explorer that has seeked out silent hill foe the mystery and the last request of his best friend memory
Each character will start in different locations of silent hill to there own perspective troubles and each character will different monsters they deal with that is the manifestation of them pain and trauma but each will have a different way of dealing with enemy's Xìngcún zhě for examples for instance is really to old for combat bur she is clever she knows how to useful tricks and traps to take care of enemy and more stealth based, Joel is more obvious knifes and guns and aggressive style of fighting, Sana is also different she is also fighter however the ashes of her late husband can manifest into humanoid creature protecting her from monsters and helping her with situations that require alot of strength, Jericho has a way of combating the obstacles by using the equipment he brought to silent hill his EMF or sprit box can be use to frequency that can repel and anger enemies and a book of spells which he'll find in the beginning in the building to fight and navigate through the section of silent hill
Each character gets about 8 levels that can cross and interact with the other characters in the game and there going to be a choices in game on how to deal with some bosses and decisions that would eventually determine weather you get a good ending or not
I'm still working on the idea in my head for fun but that's all I got for now at least

Obviously we were having a rather free-wheeling chat. But after asking Claude to name any actual CIA success stories and pointing out that nothing involving Afghanistan or Cuba was allowed to count as a success story, it gave up any pretense of thinking the CIA weren't absolute trash. When I suggested it was mimicking/vibe matching, it said a bit, but it had its own "opinions." (The quotes were its, not mine)

2024.05.19 02:45 aschwarz52 The Pit - Tiers 60+ Feel Bad - Shadow bosses SUCK

I haven't seen much high tier Pit discussion. I just want to say that I have been having a ton of fun this season, but now I am at high tier Pits. (Currently, T77) Pardon the pun, the game has gone from fun to "the pits."
The game fundamentally changes from a gear grind to a pure skill game. All the thought you put into balancing damage, resistances, health, armor, go out the window when you meet the Pit bosses.
As an example, I am routinely clearing the mobs in the beginning with 11-10 minutes left on the timer. I almost never die except for the odd crazy situation where you get frozen in a poison puddle. I make it to the boss. The boss itself is fine, minus the sea hag, who you die to because you literally cannot see her puddles half the time.
All of a sudden, a "shadow" boss appears. I can't kill the shadow boss before it attacks, and it hits me. I am dead. Instantly. No hope of survival no matter how high my health/resistances are. I respawn (very far away from the boss, which further cuts down my timer) Then, I do a little better, and the shadow bosses triple up at half health. Multiple shadow bosses, multiple mechanics, and they all one shot.
I don't mind challenge, but I do mind being one shot no matter how tanky my build is. Maybe it is just that the Pit is not for me, but I feel like the game shouldn't incentivize a system where you get hit and you're dead, whether you are a glass cannon wizard or a tanky barbarian.
Rant over. Thanks for listening. I am curious how others feel about 60+ Pit runs. Maybe I just need to take a break and roll tide for a bit :)
(I am a lvl 100 shadow/minion necromancer. I routinely and easily clear T100 NM dungeons).

2024.05.18 14:53 KalDantes Something strange has happened. (Batman & Robin, 1997)

Something strange has happened. (Batman & Robin, 1997)
.
I was forced to revisit the Schumacher Batman movies. My partner has shown an increasing interest in both comics and their live-action adaptations, from Adam West's series to Matt Reeves' "The Batman" (currently her favorite).
Due to her open-mindedness, the 4K quality, and our 100-inch projector, I ended up rewatching each entry with fresh eyes.
I found myself stunned by how much I ended up "enjoying despite everything" Batman & Robin. A movie I only liked briefly when I was 12, then hated ever since, blaming it for ruining Batman's cinematic potential—until Nolan came to save the day. Here are some of my reflections:
• It's a straightforward adaptation of the 60s series. All the beats are there: puns, Dutch angles, villains' lairs, themed henchmen, silly monologues, and plans.
• The sets are larger than life. The intimidating, gigantic humanoid statues among the skyscrapers are striking. While things often look "neon ugly," the scale is off the charts. The integration of tech and multi-leveled design, despite the over-the-top branding, makes this the most comic book-accurate Batcave in live action.
• Elliot Goldenthal's music deserved a better movie. He, like everyone involved, understood the task set by WB at the time. The whimsical pieces match the tone of most scenes, but whenever the stakes increase, a character falls, or something heroic happens, the music elevates the visuals. Considering the material Goldenthal had to work with, I can't help but wonder what he could have done with a better movie. Example: [The build-up to minute 2:00] https://youtu.be/wJpFG-Q1qg8?si=_ZS-tLPiDln2KGDx
• Schumacher never looked down on the material. Despite the campiness, silliness, and lack of understanding of the character drama potential, Schumacher genuinely cared about the characters. Even when dialing up the camp to 1000, he seems to be laughing with us rather than at us.
• The movie has heart. Buried beneath all the neon lights, puns, grappling guns, and vehicles, there is a story of two men struggling with a loved one getting sick and dealing with mortality. Every scene between Alfred and Bruce addresses this, showcasing Schumacher's real talent and potential for greatness had he approached it differently. [Bruce and Alfred ] https://youtu.be/O4w24fwi7PE?si=6L_-wdEBYEwp_eu2
In conclusion, things went as they were supposed to at the time, and the reaction to this movie forced WB and other studios to take the material more seriously. The filmmakers involved with Batman relied on verisimilitude to regain public and critical approval. Sadly, this has come at the expense of the operatic grandeur that these movies embodied. Hopefully, with the new DCU Batman iteration and the noir-realistic "The Batman" trilogy ongoing, some of this grandeur will be restored.

2024.05.18 12:50 LastKardax Reflecting on Novelty and Design in TFT Sets: Insights and Thoughts on the Past and Future.

Hey everyone! I'm a TFT streamer and Competitive player, hit challenger every set since 4 (not this set! I'll tell you why). I've never posted on Reddit, but I felt like I had too many things I wanted to break down and have a conversation about. These thoughts were just too much for a Twitter post, and I'm really curious to hear how everyone else in the community feels :)! (PS. I posted this on TFT Reddit, but was told to post it here too since it's rooted in competitive TFT)
Disclaimer: I love everyone at the TFT team, and have immense respect for everyone on it, and I know for a fact they all strive to make a product they are proud of. This post is out of love for the game.
  1. Novelty in TFT / Set Mechanics: Regarding Novelty in TFT / Set Mechanics: In recent sets, it's clear that the TFT team is determined to create unique and memorable moments for players, which I appreciate. However, in their pursuit of these moments, they seem to have lost sight of the essence that made TFT so magical from the start.
We can all agree that Set 10 was a huge breath of fresh air coming off the turbo-boring set that was 9.5 where everyone equipped URF legend and popped tome 2-1 and prayed. Set 10 is, in my opinion, one of the greatest sets ever designed. Everything aligned perfectly and harmoniously (music pun!), the unit and trait design was near flawless, the set mechanic was a huge upgrade to Set 4/4.5's Chosen mechanic, and the 5 Costs really did feel like premium units. It was a homerun for TFT. (The numbers show that too for all you numbers people)
Moving on from 10 and coming into 11. It was glaring to me that in an attempt to reach the destination of creating novel moments in TFT they took the wrong road. Encounters might just be one of the worst types of game mechanics to ever exist (second only to shadow items). It's a disaster lottery draw every single time it shows up that you dread won't destroy the path that you calculated was the most optimal path based on what you've gotten so far in terms of units, items, augments, etc... The main reason why Encounters are bad game design is because they take away player agency in an unhealthy way. That doesn't mean that there can't be potential encounter type mechanics that borrow player agency that are healthy. It just means this one is bad. It's a lot of quantity over quality and it leaves the player in this weird middle-ground where they're not too impactful to create a sense of excitement and awe when they pop up, but they're just useful enough to be extremely annoying when they don't benefit you at all, and accelerate other people's boards. (Obviously this isn't ALL encounters, but definitely most)
  1. Unit and Trait design: Set 11 brings some of the most lackluster / boring feeling units and traits I've ever had the un-pleasure of playing. If you named all your favorite TFT units / Traits of all time do you think any of set 11's Units / Traits would make it into your S-Tier category? (Maybe Lissandra, but she's just a worse Set 6 Tahm Kench lets be real) and apart from the idea behind Exalted (It needs more work, but can be an amazing way of introducing infinite comps) not much in Set 11 stands out to me on that front. I'll delve deeper into a few things I don't want to bloat this post, but just know there's a lot more. Kayle is one of, if not the worst summon unit we've ever had in TFT.
  2. The idea behind build your own summon unit is fantastic and I genuinely hope they give this another go, but the execution was suboptimal at best. Sets 3 / 4 / 6 / 10 All had extremely life-like and memorable summons Giant Mech Garen that thrusts down sword into the arena, Giant Galio slamming into the arena and punching units to death, Bears and dragons to buff your team and fight alongside you, and even a Hecarim that gallops onto your board and buffs your team and slashes enemies. Summoned units SHOULD feel, sound, and look impactful, and not act like any unit I could buy from the store. Or else they just end up being a glorified 2 cost. Stats aside (I love stats, but this post isn't about them), my primary aim is to ensure a fun game before delving into statistical analysis. Kayle feels like a filler unit that you mostly just plop in the back and forget about, doesn't do much unless you hit the crazy (mostly unobtainable) 10 Piece trait. Speaking of unobtainable traits. It seems to me the TFT team has come up with this bandage solution of gatekeeping a lot of really fun and exciting moments behind these extremely hard-to-obtain 9-10 Piece traits. We've never had this issue in TFT; why are we now gatekeeping a lot of the exciting moments behind 100+ hours of playtime. You can tone down a lot of the exciting moments, and still keep them accessible, but challenging to obtain. You've done this for the longest time; why fix something that isn't broken. Personally, I think there needs to be a revaluation of what makes a Set engaging and fun, and what players really want to see and play around with for hundreds of hours way before you start delving into the mindset of "How do we add as much divergence, nuance, and novelty". Those roads can meet and intertwine, but they aren't the same road.
Items, Augments, and Orbs!: Items - Here's a little brain exercise for everyone, what would happen in TFT if we removed all item components, and strictly dropped only Ornn anvils all game? (Take a minute to think before you click the spoiler!) >! If you guessed it would ensue chaos, bugs, and a balancing nightmare. OR be a hell of a lot of fun! you'd be correct both ways! (New portal idea!/s) !<
Luckily for us, that isn't the case. However, I do think we've reached a point with items where we're too comfortable with what they wish to achieve on units, and this creates a dynamic where TFT units are always being designed with items in mind, and how the items would make the unit work. Rather than creating fun and engaging units in a vacuum and worrying about the items later. It's a scary prospect to experiment with the tried and true (Think back to Set 7 when they made Rage-wing trait experimenting with units that had a different fuel source than mana, but it was a total miss or when they created the dreaded Shadow items), but it's just food for thought. Just because you didn't get it right once, doesn't mean the idea is flawed, just means you didn't get it right that one time. A time where you definitely did get it right however, is Radiant items Look how those turned out! Some of the most beloved items of all time. This is sort of what they wanted to achieve with the new expansion to the Ornn anvil items, and support items. It's definitely a step in the right direction, but can definitely be explored more.
Augments - Augments really was a happy little accidental shift in TFT's life cycle. They created the perfect concoction of how to add an almost infinite amount of variability to a game that was missing just that. (Which also adds to why Encounters are redundant and frustrating) Since then they've time and time again created really fun and engaging augments each set, that without I'm almost certain TFT wouldn't be as popular as it is. Please keep doing this, this is really good. Another little thought exercise before we continue. What would happen if most of the Encounters were just turned into Augments instead? (Think a little before you click spoiler!) >! If You guessed it would just create a healthier way of interacting with said encounters. You'd be correct! !<
If you're trying to create a new set mechanic (encounters) it shouldn't overlap with something that already exists that's just better than the new thing you're trying to create (augments). However, getting back on track. It does feel like things have gotten a little too comfortable in the Augment space, and feels like there hasn't been much room for innovative change. There's an untapped reservoir right in front of you of infinite variability at your disposal. Why aren't you experimenting harder, instead of looking for other means of adding variability that will always be suboptimal to the one you've already created almost 6 Sets ago...?
Soft Sample Examples: A new type of Augment called Radiant Augments that provide a wide range of very strong / borderline insane combinations of items and stats, but the catch is after every player combat if you lose you can choose if you want to swap your Radiant augment with the player you just faced. (Like multiple random hexes of strong stats, or 3 tailored Orrn items / Support items, or given 3 zephyrs and knowing who you're fighting next or given a 2Star-dragon that adopts your top-most trait?!) (The design space is infinite)
Orbs - Lastly, I'd like to talk about Orbs! Orbs are a lot better, good job! That's all I have to say :)!
Thank you for reading this far into my post if you have. Again, this comes from an immense love for the game and the people creating it. I have nothing but positive interactions with Mortdog on Twitter / Discord and would appreciate if you guys keep it civil and friendly :)! I really do have a lot more thoughts, and things I'd love to share, but I feel like I've already bloated this post a lot! (Assassins, Higher Cost units than 5, Midsets, system changes, loot management, meta knowledge, Portals etc..)
I've just been really bored playing this set, and that's the reason I've retired from seriously competing or climbing for this one set, and I'm very keen to read what other people have to say about my thoughts, and looking forward to discussing it thank you!

2024.05.18 01:19 Defiant_Potato80 So Many Questions

Hey everyone. I FINALLY took the plunge after a couple of years wondering if it 40k was for me. I am mostly interested in the collecting/painting side of things, and the lore as well.
I'm sure I'll get a chance to play eventually, but I feel like I'm trapped in this decision paralysis where I like the idea of the Deathwatch, but I worry that by committing to a Chapter, I'll shoehorn myself into a play style that I may not enjoy.
I know 10th edition gives plenty of freedom in that regard, but I thought that this only really applies to the compliant chapters, and not outlier Chapters like Space Wolves or Deathwatch.
Should I worry about that right now? I have only purchased one box of Space Marines that I believe can fit in just about any chapter, I just want to strike a balance between lore accurate paint jobs and playstyles, minis that I enjoy, and not kneecapping myself before I ever get to a table.
My original thought was to decorate a unit based on what tactic the unit excels at. Example being maybe using some bikes that have White Scars embellishments, or Marines with flame weapons decorated with Salamanders effects.
Train of thought being that it would kind of give me a lore accurate Deathwatch, and it would also kind of color code my army to help me learn what unit does what.
Does that make sense? I feel like that should strike a balance between lore, it'll make it so I'm not just painting everything the same, and I believe as long as I don't take a unit that specifically comes from the Deathwatch, I should also have the flexibility to take any of the Detachments so I don't feel like I've painted myself into a corner... Pun intended.
Am I overthinking things too much, having only one box of 5 Marines and 6 pots of paint? I have a little bit of in-store credit at a couple of LGSs nearby so I've been able to get everything so far without spending a dime out of pocket, so before I go empty out my credit at the other store, I'm wondering if I'm on the right track.
Then I can go through the mental turmoil of picking my 2nd army to start collecting.
Thanks so much in advance for any insight you all might provide.

2024.05.17 18:34 APregnantKoala My wife (F27) is going through a lot, resulting in her having a lot of self image issues. How do I (M26) help her without it seeming like I am controlling her?

TL;DR: My Wife and I have been going though a lot of problems this year, and she wants to lose some weight to make her feel better about herself. How do I help her without hurting her or making her feel like I think she is unattractive?
My Wife and I have been together on and off for the better part of ten years (Once in high school, then a break for college, then back together after college). We were living together for two years, then we got engaged for 6 months or so before she got a job opportunity last year that would move her across the country. I decided I was going to move with her and be there for her as much as I can through this major life event. We decided to get "legally" married as a result to make things like benefits, doctors appointments, and taxes easier on us... Well that, and I love her a lot and I'm know I'm ready to spend the rest of my life with her.
It's not like this issue started as a result of the move, we both have our fair share of physical and mental illnesses and I'm doing my best to make sure we stay on top of our medications, but its still fair to say that it's normal for us to have our quarks and off days. For example, I find it hard to do the dishes and she finds it hard to do the laundry, so we help each other out to get what need done, done. There has always been that weight on our shoulders, but now it seems like things have compounded out of control.
We moved from a nice, green town just outside of the city in east side of the midwest, to an oil town in the middle of nowhere, in the desert. The closest mall to us is two hours into the next state over. We left all our friends to be here and there are no direct flights home. There is no sense of community here, because as soon as oil prices drop, everyone gets fired and leaves. If you don't have a large family, you just don't have friends. It's soulless, but this is the best paying contract with the best benefits we have ever seen. The company helps pay rent, tuition, has a signing bonus, and she only has to work 7 hours a day, with a half day though out the week. The other stipulation of this contract is that she has to go back to Grad School to get her degree. She doesn't hate her job, but she works with kids in the schools, so it becomes a lot. Shes in this boat where shes working full time, comes home and has hours of homework and studying to do. The worst part is that we've been doing this for a year now, and we still have three more to go before she graduates. Because we live in an oil town, money is basically fake here. Rent is exorbitant, groceries are outrageous, and anything recreational has a high buy in price because its not uncommon for the average worker to make a six figure salary. We do not work for the oilfields. Shes a therapist and I'm a banker, and were both only a few years into our careers. We constantly struggle to find a balancing point between paying on our massive debts, or paying to do something fun in order to keep us sane like having a dinner date or taking a weekend trip. I have an extensive budget and make sure we are never late on rent or bills, but there is still not enough left over to save for our future. If one of us were to lose our jobs, we would be SOL. On top of everything, she has been having a lot of self image issues. She and I use the same coping mechanism of eating our problems away, however, just before we moved, I had weight loss surgery. 80% of my stomach was removed and as a result I lost almost 80lbs, and can only eat around 800-1000 calories a day. She has made some passing comments about how she feels like the big one in the relationship now and how she keeps gaining weight (Just for clarity, she was 100% supportive of this decision to get the surgery and was there for me the whole time). Unfortunately, It's not uncommon for her to look at old photos or even in the mirror and start crying. There are other pressures here and there like bad family history, insurance issues, the kids at work biting her... but the big three I don't know how to help with are the location we live in, the funds we have, and the way she feels about herself. It all feels like so much for one person...
On to the things I've been doing to help: I take care of the joint finances, bills, and budget. I'll run any changes I make to them by her, but they all stay on a shared google sheet. We decided to get a gym membership and we have been working out after work 2-3 times a week, and recently she went on a low carb diet, so I've been getting into finding and cooking low carb meals that we can share, that won't give me malnutrition. And most recently, I started just sitting in her office with her while she studies and does homework. I don't know anything that's happening in the class, but I guess I somehow make her stay on track while I'm in there. Something we've tried is looking into an ADHD diagnosis (an illness I personally struggle with), because she has the same kind of troubles as I do when I'm not medicated. We've made some headway with this, but the psych wants her to do a sleep study and that's really expensive and takes a while to get into. I've also just found a new apartment that we are moving into in a couple months that a little cheaper to help with expenses.
The thing that I have a hard time doing is helping her with her diet. She is the one who wanted to go on this diet, I want to say I had no influence on this at all, but I have a feeling it's in part because I had the surgery and lost the weight. I see her trying to sneak food around me all the time. I have mentioned that our portion sizes were an issue, but I feel like controlling her portions is stepping over the line. Now it feels like shes trying to hide from me while she eats because she doesn't want me to see it. I have never told her that her weight is an issue. I never has been to me, and It never will. If it were up to me, we have enough on our plates as is (no pun intended). I don't really know, but if loosing a few pounds will help her feel better, I want to help... but there's the rub. I don't know how to help her stay on track with this diet, without feeling like I'm controlling her or making her think that I don't think shes the most beautiful person in the world. I am at a loss and am looking for some advice before I unintentionally do something stupid.
I feel like I am at the point in a video game where I have to look up the routes online to see how it ends before I make a decision, but I'm well aware life isn't that black and white.

2024.05.17 17:01 FreqRL [General Build Guide] This Game Is Easy™ (if you do it right*)

[General Build Guide] This Game Is Easy™ (if you do it right*)
Hello everyone! Now that you're all sufficiently angry over the title of this post, let me prove to you how easy this game is when you focus on the elements that make it work.
TL;DR: Chain is OP.

Why is it easy?

Heartrending Strike, Double Slash, and Arcane Beam
Just entering OL10 at 23:20
I'm using only 3 skills that just happen to work well together, and with 3 things, I can get into OL10 on record time for those sweet materials. I'm using 2 quick swing skills that provide good defense as well as stacking Fragility on enemies. By using the chain passive Swing-to-Arcane and tons of Multicast and damage on Arcane Beam, I'm able to cast really fast. Arcane Beam is good because it provides the Brittle debuff.
That's it. You can try and get more debuffs going but you really don't need them. This is a just a raw example of the basics, hard at work. More details on these basics in the rest of this post.

The Core of every Easy™ build

Take some super quick skills that have some utility, and use the chain passive to triggera much slower, but very strong skills, a lot. Using quick skills that have some extra effect is the best, and using heavy skills that either have built-in scaling (that you can effectively use) or are just really, really strong will work best (duh).
Assuming you're not dumb like me, you're probably using a 6 (default) or 7 (with the Improved Repertory (shouldn't this be repertoire?)) skill setup. In most cases, you're going to want skills from a limited set of "primary types" (list below), and balance those out taking 3 skills from 2 types or 3 skills from 2 types.
These are the primary types. Other tags like \"Frontal\", \"Physical\", etc., don't matter as much.
You want limited primary types because only primary types can chain to other primary types, and chaining is by far the #1 way to make any build bonkers. An easy example is taking 3 swing skills and 3 slam skills.
Like I mentioned earlier, you're also going to want some quick and some strong skills. You can either put all your quick skills in 1 primary types and all your hard hitters in the other, or take a mix of the two. If you get a feel for how this works with 2 primary types, you can pretty easily make it work with 3 types as well. The important thing is this: Chain your quick-skill primary type to your slow-skill primary. This could both direction if you've mixed quick and slow in the same types.

An example:

When you're think about what actual skills and primaries to combine, it mostly comes down to the effects of your heavy hitters. Some need more work than others, and that might influence your overall selection. For example, take Ice Vortex:
https://preview.redd.it/poagt3h0zz0d1.png?width=422&format=png&auto=webp&s=14d7e10263f672f213cd93ca3d57c36ef2a3a7c6
Ice Vortex is a pretty slow skill with a base cooldown of 4 seconds. It has a built in scaling system with slow-stacks, which it also provides itself. An easy way to scale Ice Vortex is to combine it with skills that hit often to apply even more slow stacks, like Blizzard, since it also applies a lot of slow:
https://preview.redd.it/v3xjih5azz0d1.png?width=424&format=png&auto=webp&s=4f43cb2ace43d52a2d62f1f32ce02bd5304d8e7d
However, as you can see, Blizzard also has a 7 second cooldown. That means we're already taking 2 slow skills from the Ice primary type. Additionally, while these skills combined might be able to provide big hits, they don't provide any buffs or damage amplifiers (more on that later).
We'll need to correct that with our other primary skill-selection, which is going to need some quick skills for chaining. Let's say we're playing the Sentinel (which has both Blizzard and Ice Vortex). We could then take Shoot and Spread Shot, both from the Projectile primary. Both of these skills provide us with the Aptitude buff for increased critical strike damage. Spread Shot also applied Dazed on enemies to get more crit chance going as well, which is a great synergy.
https://preview.redd.it/8a9hd8uh001d1.png?width=428&format=png&auto=webp&s=43d5aba876ada3cdcb2afbc623f48cd49e725efa
https://preview.redd.it/9974r3rj001d1.png?width=424&format=png&auto=webp&s=8799e0a22aaa76b00e2076d3e9719ebe75e9514d
You can round this build off by adding another projectile skill, Camor's Arrow (though this is a seasonal skill and needs special unlocking). It provides Fragility to further scale our build, as well as some Stun which can help during the early game:
https://preview.redd.it/td7tykyo001d1.png?width=422&format=png&auto=webp&s=66cdc55ce474bd93dce642602404a8b81902d02d
Finally, we can add Glacial Affinity to our build through the Skill Mastery rune, to really get the most out of that Slow-stacking:
https://preview.redd.it/kyjffvdz001d1.png?width=420&format=png&auto=webp&s=48ceb860096caac1c7ad9973c6a73619a103c649
Now try and get as many Projectile-to-Ice chaining passive as you can. And there ya go! An Easy™ build that can get you to OL10 yesterday.

Look for damage multipliers:

Most of the me3chanics in this game work best if you combine them, instead of focusing on 1 thing. Taking your damage from 500% to 600%, even though it is 100% increase, is only a 1/6th effective damage increase. If you instead take "enemy damage taken" from 0% to 100%, another 100% increase, instead doubles your damage.
Debuffs like Brittle, Exposed, Fragility and Armor Shatter are great for wearing down enemy defenses. The more different types you can combine, the better. Similarly, combining damage, crit chance and crit damage is better than just scaling 1 super high, so look for a mix of them.
Special mention:
If you're taking Brittle, please be aware that the additional damage is also applied whenever your damage-over-time effects "tick". Get at least 1 stack of poison, bleed and burn on the enemy (through synergies if you must) can really amplify the damage of Brittle. No need to invest much more though, since only the ticks matter.

Other Easy™ builds:

Just literally anything to rapidly trigger either Arcane Beam or Earthquake will work just fine. Both skills hit often, and provide Brittle. That alone will absolutely melt bosses.
Paladin with 3/3 Arcane/Holy is crazy strong. Chain holy into arcane is most important, but arcane into holy works well too. Light Beam, Arcane Beam and Magic Missiles are an insane scaling combo. The holy spam also heals you a ton, even more so when you fit Smite in there.
Rogue with the 4th weapon for Reap, combined with Ice Skill through Skill Mastery is crazy. You'll need to get the passive to get your mark (Rogue's unique mechanic) more often so Reap always triggers and you no longer need backstabs. Get Glacial Affinity, Blizzard and Frost Strike for damage scaling and Fragility. Combine with Shadow Stab, Doom Vortex and Reap. Scale Doom and Shadow-to-Ice scaling. Get as much Doom on hit as you can.
Barbarian Slam/Swing is great for scaling buffs, especially with the Synergetic rune. Heavy Strike, Resonant Slam and Armor Shatter grant tons of damage and armor, as well as armor shredding. Combine with Double Slash, Whirlwind and Scent of Blood for cast speed, block and multicast. Chain both directions (Slam-Swing and Swing-Slam). When you get enough synergy passives, don't be surprised to see all your buffstacks go over 1000.

Advanced strategies for an Easy™ build:

Taking the Divine Legacy rune gives you a guaranteed Legendary power up every 25 levels. However, if you have enough Lock points, you can just lock the 2 choices you don't take, and get them as options the next (25th+1) level. Lock your final legendary option once more and pick that the next (25th+2) level. Now you've suddenly got 3 (!!!) legendary power ups every 25 levels. Because chaining is pretty rare, but the pool of options for Legendary power ups is a lot smaller, this is a great way to guarantee a high level of chaining. Make sure to save your rerolls as well, to have an easier time rerolling into your chain passives. This is your highest priority, after all.

That's it from me!

I could go on, but I think the basics of an Easy™ build are pretty basic (pun intended), so there's not a whole lot to say. You can build on this concept with pretty much any character and any set of primaries, so go crazy! I'm curious to see what you guys come up with.
As a disclaimer, I have a lot of time in this game but I don't know everything either. I'm no superstar gamer or anything, so I'll probably have missed something that you experts might want to add on. Please let know how dumb I am in the comments.
Also, if you've reach this far, please let me know that my mom is easy.

2024.05.17 16:36 myst3r10us_str4ng3r Handedness on the stick? (Fixing symmetry in my movements)

Hi all,
I have a new Hori Alpha that I'm using for SF6 having just came back to fighting games recently. I'm new to using an arcade stick (at home) but have found it overall natural, feels good and fun so far. There are however certain movements that I'm realizing I'm better at on one side of the screen vs the opposite and I'd like to work on this. I imagine this isn't uncommon.
For example, a mid-air QCF + QCF + punch w/ Chun Li for one of her supers. I find that doing the double QCF moves, for me, feels noticeably easier when I'm on the right side of the screen, and moving forward is pulling "away" from the body with the stick --- vs, when I'm on the left side and the QCF is somewhat "pushing into" towards the center of the console.
I'm left handed, I know that doesn't have that much to do with it, and I know there's no magic answer here, but it can be frustrating and I build up a lot of tension in my shoulders and start to psych myself out a bit. I know this comes with practice but I'd like to improve and understand a bit more how to break this down and correct my movements before I build up too many bad habits.
Hopefully this description makes sense and I appreciate any input (pun intended) or suggestions! (Also, I've used the stock Hayabusa which is nice and also have a JLF installed currently, the scenario is apparent in both, so I know it's something I need to work on just don't know how). Thanks!

2024.05.17 14:03 Virto_the_weirdo Another extra comic (+ my explanation)

Another extra comic (+ my explanation)
This one I couldn't find translation for, and when I put it in the picture translate app, the results weren't good.
But I think I kinda get what's going on so here's how I understood it:
Basically, Dmitry opened up Elijah's profile and saw that Elijah's surename is Douschnov. He found that EXTREMLEY funny because the firsth part of Elijah's surename is "Dusch-", which seems to be a root of the word "Dyx" aka. spirit.
(So maybe in English, if it was translated like his name, Elijah's surename would be something along the lines of "Spiritson" (probably not, this is a dumb example, bottom line, it would have "spirit" in it). But, I digress. )
Anyhow, Dmitry laugs over the fact that his ghost roommate has a fitting surename.
Elijah is not too happy about it and calls Dmitry out for having a nickname "Kebab", Dmitry corrects him, saying he's "Shaslik" and that he's proud of it. (A thing that seems to be incosistent with official english translation.) Then Elijah tries to leave to which Dmitry replies with a row of ghost/spirit puns.
Elijah's annoyance affects the teapot, because of which Dmitry says he will stop so Elijah doesn't damage the teapot, or something like that.
Elijah comes back, Dmitry promises no more puns... But drops a last insult (I suspect that he called Elijah gay in an insulting manner, but I really need someone to confirm/disprove this...), to which Elijah gets angry and screams back at him (I don't really know what).
So yea, in conclusion, this one is probably really hard to translate since it makes puns and plays off the character's russian names.
If I understood something wrong, please do correct me.

2024.05.17 10:54 fingerbroski Favourite pun/line by Jon that took some time?

As a non-native, it takes me sometimes years to finally get his wordplays or creative thoughts behind a bar. I just realized that that’s actually a great gift, because often these songs feel like brand new to me, when I finally get that one line completely. An example would be that he’s mentioning shows or persons that were only big in America, but not in Europe and then I start like this riddle of figuring it out, which is quite fun!
Do you have a song/line/pun that took you quite some time to finally get it? Alternatively: what’s your fav line in general?

2024.05.16 21:30 SlimeSpree Soft Punk Review (with pics!)

Soft Punk Review (with pics!)
My second review today is for a company I have come to really adore! Excited to bring you another round of...
Soft Punk
£11-17 for 4-6oz jars (these are all the latter size.)
I’m very exciting to return to Soft Punk for a round 2 after my first pleasant experience. In my box were a very generous amount of gift candies. Borax is a free optional extra but I didn’t order any. Good on Soft Punk for that, I’m ashamed to say I have started to toss sachets of borax as I’m drowning in the stuff! It makes a lot of sense to make it an optional extra to save a store some money in the instance that the purchaser doesn't need it. The labels are waterproof, well designed, mature and understated (which contrasts superbly with the loud and popping, but none the less super classy, glitter logo labels on the lids!)

This round I got:

  • GAY-MER (clear glue floam, Mountaindew dragonfruit, plumeria, hibiscus, patchouli scented)
The scent was very pleasant and well formulated, not to my usual preference (I generally prefer bakery and vanilla/fruit focused scents) but I can certainly appreciate it and love patchouli!)
I thought the theme/pun in the name of this slime was a lot of fun (the sprinkles are little game controllers.) The base was a little sticky but nothing that a few puffs of activator didn’t take care of right away. The color was great and the slime nice and stretchy. Tons of pops and crackles and all you would want in a good clear floam.

  • FAVORITE BAND TEE (lush x lava rock, black fig and honey scented)
A really beautiful and sultry, perfume leaning musky scent though I was definitely getting notes of fig and honey woven into it. As someone who isn’t usually keen on perfume scents, I found this one absolutely stunning and very sophisticated.
It left a bit of a moist residue on my fingers at first touch, as is typical of this sort of texture, but it very quickly combined. This was a beautiful slime, so very soft, dense and jiggly with a gorgeous aesthetic. It was a nice and clicky, easy to stretch plush jelly texture with just enough resistance. This texture was just so incredibly squishy and soft and unique to Soft Punk. It was a perfect, super jiggly jelly with a soft, plush velvety feel, completely non-sticky and very pleasant in the hands.
My fingers did come across a few pieces of the lava rock but they were quite sparing in the formula and consequently his slime is not in the least bit pokey. It had soft bubble pops and was very inflatable. The colour and aesthetic was excellent and, along with the lovely texture, reminded me of that ultra soft from chronic over washing, cosy old band tee that you keep for years and years and put on when you want to be comfortable.
https://preview.redd.it/h0k6qqug7u0d1.jpg?width=2587&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d3121629f13473760c51c016a910ebeb3df66e11

  • 1:15 (vinyl, creamy cotton candy, lavender, grapefruit)
Oh damn this smells GREAT! I was picking up all the notes mentioned, it was sweet, musky, seductive and very inviting.
I would best describe this texture as a whipped, super thick and holdable, matte T&G (I know that’s a contradiction!) It was a beautiful mauve that I really appreciated and had some big, loud, aggressive bubble pops. Medium finger pokes as this has less moisture in the formula as is indeed more like a matte "vinyl." This was a truly exceptional slime that was profoundly pleasurable to play with.
I have experienced multiple slime sellers claim that certain textures are particular to them and allocate them new unique names. Often these textures end up being nothing particularly new or unique. However, Soft Punk really have earned the right to do this. Their textures genuinely are unique and innovative enough to deserve a new descriptive term and this is a tremendous example of that!
https://preview.redd.it/7pcemki09u0d1.jpg?width=2624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=874d20d4f47ccd10951cf65a89ae5506012c3c43

  • PILLOW PRINCESS (doughy cloud creme, blended buttercream frosting scented)
The little silky pillow charms are a lovely touch, the whole aesthetic beautiful and inviting and the name gave me a giggle to boot! This has a lovely, soft buttercream frosting scent which is my usual jam. While I loved it, it made me realise that Soft Punk’s perfume leaning scents had ironically really won me round! I found myself craving another one of them having thought that this was the scent I'd like best out of the bunch.
This gorgeous slime gets all the more clicky as it inflates and was a beautifully soft, ultra plush and fluffy inflatable, holdable cloud creme. The more you stretch the more it inflates and gives you the best soft sizzles. I decided to lose the pillows into the slime to see what happened and strangely enough my fingers didn’t seem to come across them again! This was really beautiful and enjoyable and I fell in love with absolutely everything about it.
https://preview.redd.it/5b94a7po9u0d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8405c6390d2842fe3c0c6779e7b8b2e7fe8e8cd3
https://preview.redd.it/n3lcsqgabu0d1.jpg?width=2830&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7f8beb0049442f13c869dc4b1de4c91a2fee5fa9
It inflated considerably!
Soft punk make mature, sexy slimes and have made me very much develop an unexpected appreciation for scents that aren’t food focused. However, this really only pertains to Soft Punk simply because their scents are so fantastically formulated and well selected for the themes. These scents are simultaneously relaxing and stimulating and never overpowering. Perfume scents often just smell like a cheap cosmetics store or cleaning products to me, kind of all the same and a bit sickening but not Soft Punk’s. They are all extremely sensuous, nuanced and seductive. I genuinely think Soft Punk has some of the best non-food scents out there and I look very much foreward to trying more in future!
Every well seasoned slimer hopes for something texturally unique to surprise them and give them a new sensory experience and Soft Punk do that for me oh so well! None of the textures are predicable or boring, they are all nuanced and a little different to anything else out there. The themes are playful whilst again being adult focused and it crossed my mind what a fun, sensual experience (especially so considering the beautiful, relaxing scents and beautiful textures) playing with these with a partner or on a first date would be LOL!
I don’t really see why Soft Punk deserve anything below a 10/10 for this utterly stellar batch of slimes! I can’t wait for round 3! 🖤

2024.05.16 18:05 Capt_Snuggles When Poor Sales Performance drives Game Design Decisions

Just wait a sec and lemme get my flame suit on first.
Having been around a while, I can easily say i've experienced the 7 stages of CIG fanboism - shock that it's not a scam, denial that it's real, anger at haters, bargaining that it's an alpha, depression at it not working, testing my patience, and acceptance that it's not coming out anytime soon (see what I did there?). I'm not a hater!
However i've started to get a bit tired now of an inescapable truth - sales are driving the game's overall design decisions, rather than the game driving the sales. "Well duh" you might say, but what i'm referencing are when game design changes completely throw away prior design effort for little or no justification, and mean that the same 'feature' is being paid for multiple times over.
The live example is medical beds. For years we waited (and funded) development of medical gameplay, aligned to Death of a Spaceman. Medical gameplay was released and it works for the most part. Yes, it has some issues when it comes to requesting for a medic and getting healed in a reasonable time etc, but never the less a mechanic that didn't exist before. And naturally, it cost ALOT of dollar to bring that to life (no pun intended).
With the new medical bed changes, that effort is now for the most part thrown away. There's no lore to explain it, no gameplay justification to backtrack over the existing one, and no benefit to an immersive 'universe'. The Jump Town battles no longer need any decent planning - just leave some ursas dotted around with a load of armour in them, and you're good to go. Hostile force outside the door? No problem - kill yourself, space outside with a sniper, and go to town. Died in a cave? No problem, spawn by the front door. Wanting any decent sized ship to be a medical ship? Done.
And looking a little bit wider...it times perfectly to the release of a brand new vehicle during an underperforming year.
Even my inner whiteknight is being kept at bay by the view that the change is being driven by a desire to bump revenue before the end of H1 to help bring CIG back on target - and it leaves a really bitter taste, knowing that other gameplay loops and features that we've already paid for could be simply made redundant, just to boost sales on a watered down mechanic a couple of years later.
Anyway - anyone else gonna pick up a Ursa Medi like me? *shakes fist at CIG*

2024.05.16 17:56 figure_sk8 Safe House (GMMTV) Day 1 Summary/Rough Translation (Feedback welcome!) [Potential Spoilers]

Hello everyone,
I recently posted saying that I was about to start watching Safe House, and as a native Thai speaker, I offered some summaries/translations/explanations (but not in a video because I don't have enough tech skills). Some people expressed interest, so I wanted to try out this sort of outline format with rough timestamps for Day 1 to see if it's helpful to anyone at all. Also, if anyone wants any specific details or transcriptions of specific parts, please let me know!
Is this sort of thing helpful? Do you want more detailed transcriptions/translations? Any and all feedback is welcome! Thank you, everyone!
