Unsure how to proceed...
So I found my original collection from 1999. I have a complete 102 all first edition set, but just figured I would post the holos here.
I'm not sure what to do. Keep them? Sell them? Should I grade them all, sell them raw?
It's hard to pin a value on a 95% raw collection. (I have Alakazam, Dugtrio, Electrode and Pokemon Breeder already graded).
Any help would be appreciated!

2023.05.02 23:54 Dry-Ad8126 Naruto World Building (I'd love to get everyone's opinion on things)

I'm taking heavy inspiration from One Punch Man and Jujutsu Kaisen.
I have multiple Naruto fan-fiction ideas that I have yet to publish and each one follows these rules and lore quite closely with little to no differences between these mirrored worlds.
Earth History-
Earth was created 5 million years ago by beings called God. These beings for 4.5 million years would constantly reset their project by putting their creations through eradication events that were held by their Angels. Eventually God created humans and grew fond of their newest creation, even regarding them as their children. Believing their desires within reach, they entrusted themselves into humanity as they assimilated themselves within their creation. With God's Angel of Wrath observing humanity from the moon, she decided to interact with her master's children before attempting to wipe them out but fell for their charms and even had a family on the way. Having disobeyed God's wishes, she was punished by bearing witness to her husband killing her second child and him committing seppuku out of guilt. While she was subjected to madness, her first son was forced to bear the weight of her sins for 1000 years by protecting the Earth from his mother and guiding humanity to greater development. The son had three children of his own and was made to replace his mother as God's new Angel of Wrath, departing to the moon to observe humanity until it was his time to eradicate humanity.
Two of the three sons would enter a rivalry in order to fulfill their father's wishes of not only protecting their home, but preparing their people, while the last son left them to their devices to hone his own skills. These three would leave behind powerful and influential descendants like the Hyuga Clan, the Senju Clan, and the Uchiha Clan. After three Great Wars, the ninja world has entered an era of pseudo peace. What was once a lavish land is now polluted by dwindling resources, famines, and diseases.
Machigai Period-
The Machigai Period is an era where the Senju Clan reigned supreme and dominated the ninja world thanks to their clan leader, Hashirama Senju and his backing from the Uzumaki and Uchiha Clan. Hishirama's reign would be put to an end after he was assassinated and his brother, Tobirama would re-start the war the First Hokage nearly ended. Following Tobirama's death, his protege Hiruzen would take the title and keep his country afloat until his successor, Minato would demolish the opposing forces with his unmatched talent.
The Land of Fire would stand atop the ninja world as the richest land with it having the most resources and lowest mortality rate. With the rest of the world struggling to survive, the Land of Fire gained the ire of others. Now ten years after the wars end, the many versions of Naruto have been born and will set out on their own paths.
Lore-
Every living thing poesseses some amount of chakra. Those with higher amounts of Chakra have a longer life expectancy like the Uzumaki Clan that could live for hundreds of years. Over the millennia, chakra has become polluted and corrupted by the polarity from the Tailed Beast's (World Tree included) and the miasma they left in their wake, resulting in overall weaker ninja.
The universale age of adulthood in the ninja world is 16 for both male and females but this can be bypassed once the individual has become a Genin, Samurai, or a heinous criminal. While the universage age of consent is 13 for females and 15 for males (There will not be any underage depictions of sexual activities in my stories only mentions, as the world they reside in is far less civil and advanced than in the original series). This is due to the high mortality rate in most countries where males are victims to wars or violent crimes while females mainly fall victim to diseases and maternal death.
Dojutsu transference is an extremely risky but rewarding medical treatment if properly treated. It can be used to give those without any kekkei genkai an edge over others or act as a shortcut for those capable of unlocking their own dojutsu. The process is much easier for those who are more closely related to the transferer and will recieve less downsides if any at all. If the process fails the transferee will forever lose their eyesight and both pair of eyes will be destroyed.
Limbo or the Astral Plane is a plane of existence between life and death. This was created by God to savour their favoured creations over the megaanum to seperate them from the Mortal Plane but to avoid them from being recycled in the Spiritual Plane. Individual's who reach this plane are half-dead and half-alive as beings unable to be touched by death unless the requirements for their death has been met while in the Mortal Plane or directly killed by God themselves. Those who have cheated death while still in the Mortal Plane gain a blessing/curse called the Cursed Blessing.
The Cursed Blessing is a curse/blessing that is placed on a mortal that has cheated death, giving them extraordinary abilites and/or knowledge. Those marked either develop a unique presence/personality or unique physical apperance/mindset that easily sets them apart. Having gotten a second chance at life, should they die again while in the Mortal Realm, they will instead be brought to Limbo or the Astral Plane for all of eternity unless they form a contract as a summons with a mortal or God decides to kill them.
Family-Clan Tweaks/Overhauls-
The Aburame is one of the four noble clans of Konohagakure. At birth, members of this clan are offered to several special breeds of insects as a nest, residing just under their host's skin. These insects will then live in symbiosis with their host from that point on.
The Akimichi is one of the four noble clans of Konohagakure. Many of their clan's techniques revolve around the manipulation of their bodyweight and size through the use of Yang Release.
The Fuma is a renowned ninja clan distantly related to the Uchiha Clan. They were well-known as an aggressive clan that fought using their extraordinarly high IQ and skill with weaponry, being hailed as the strongest weapon users in history.
The Hyuga Clan is one of the four noble clans of Konohagakure, as well as the strongest clan in the village. All members born into this clan possess the Byakugan, a kekkei genkai that gives them extended fields of vision and the ability to see through solid objects and even the chakra circulatory system, amongst other things. Members of this clan also possess an innate ability which allows them to expel chakra from any of the tenketsu in their body.
The Inizio family are distant relatives of the Hoki Clan, which was a matrilineal shinobi clan of medical-nin and information gatherers from Sunagakure. The family moved down to the village of Konohagakure as a way to escape the horrendous experiments their village subjected them to. All members born into the clan possess the Yang Release, a kekkei genkai that gives them extraordinary vitality and the ability to regenerate organs and limbs.
The Inuzuka Family is a family of shinobi in Konohagakure known for their use of ninken as fighting companions and are easily identified by the distinctive red fang markings on their cheeks.
The Kurama Clan is a clan of extremely skilled genjutsu users. This talent in genjutsu is due to the kekkei genkai, Reality Release, that the clan possesses. However their are members of the clan that possess such enormous skill in genjutsu that their illusions can become physically real, making the clan member the only individual capable of killing their opponents with genjutsu.
The Nara Family is one of the many families of Konohagakure. They are known for tending deer and their ability to manipulate shadows through the use of Yin Release. All of its member are well known for their high-level of intelligence, and most have served as advisors to the Hokage.
The Otsutsuki Clan was a formidibale clan of powerful occular individuals with extremely weak bodies. Their decimation was brought with the ending of the Second Great Ninja War where they retreated to their relative clan, the Hyuga's. Their dojutsu, the Jogan, was highly sought out by all for the purpose of developing or mutating dojutsu for their bloodlines.
The Sarutobi Family is an influential family from Konohagakure. It has produced several renowned members who have held positions of high authority. Being distant relatives of the Senju Clan, the Sarutobi Family are capable of learning multiple chakra natures much more quickly than most and possess the primates summon.
The Senju Clan was one of the clans responsible for founding the first shinobi village: Konohagakure — the other being their rival Uchiha clan. Although the clan itself no longer exist as a group, the Senju continue to influence Konoha's politics through their philosophy of the Will of Fire and the corresponding interpretation of the role of the Hokage position.
The Uchiha Clan is one of the four noble clans of Konohagakure, once reputed to be the village's strongest because of their Sharingan and natural battle prowess. After helping found Konoha decades ago, the Uchiha grew increasingly isolated from the village's affairs.
The Uzumaki Clan was a formerly prominent clan in Uzushiogakure. Its members are renown for having bright, red or white hair, possessing incredibly strong life-forces and chakra, and their prowess in fuinjutsu. Despite the fall of Uzushiogakure and decline of the clan, it never quite went extinct as most of its known members have since resided in Konohagakure.
The Yamanaka Family is a family of shinobi found in Konohagakure. They specialise in mind related techniques, and they own and run various floweherb shops in the village.
Ninja Rank-
Genin are the lowest rank (obviously) and are capable of completing D-rank missions by themselves or C-rank missions with their Genin team.
Tokubetsu Chunin are Genin capable of completing C-rank by themselves or B-rank missions with their Genin team. To become one the individual must first apply for the position then recieve full recomendation from their team before they must complete their assigned test. If successful, the individual can continue with their team until promoted to Chunin or be assigned to a Tokubetsu Jonin.
Chinin are promoted Genin capable of completing C to B-rank by themselves and A-rank missions with their Chunin team.
Tokubetsu Jonin are Chunin capable of completing A-rank missions by themselves or S-rank missions with their Tokubetsu Jonin team. To become one the individual must first apply for the position then they must complete their assigned test. If successful, the individual can form their own team by picking up a Tokubetsu Chunin or join the Anbu.
Jonin are promoted Chunin capable of completing S-rank missions by themselves or Z-rank missions with their Jonin team.
Kage are the generals of the ninja ranks. They aren't required to be the strongest or the smartest but they are required to be the most experienced and most strategic. This does not necessarily correlate with age but how many battles the individual has been involved in and how many they have won. Furthermore, the Kage are responsible for the protection and warfare of their home as the immediate leader of military while the Daimyo is responsible for the politics and development of their home.
I may have forgotten to include some things and might do an update or make another post but I would mainly like to get peoples thoughts and criticism.

2023.02.18 09:03 AnimeOcCreator77 Tengai Tengai no Mi [Canopy Canopy Fruit]

Appearance: A flat green pumpkin with flat lighter green swirls, topped with a mahogany stem with a spiral and leaves in an umbrella shape
This fruit gifts the user the ability to manifest a shapable barrier above themself, making them a Canopy User

In-Depth

Canopy: The user is able to manifest an indestructible barrier above themself, giving them a shield that can guard against any attacks and dangers from above. The user is able to change the altitude and size of their barrier from as wide as an umbrella just above their head to covering an entire ship or city block with their canopy. The user's canopy is able to change shape, form, and position by the user's mental command, allowing them to defend against all variety of attacks and create flying weapons and appendages from their canopy they can use for combat
Camouflaging: Another special ability of this canopy is its ability to camoflauge anyone and anything beneath itself! The user can utilize this to hide themself from plain sight by crawling on the ground and pulling their canopy over themselves like a blanket or turtle shell, and can apply this to allies as well. The user can also camouflage entire buildings and ships against the ground and sea surface to hide them from aerial view

Awakening

The user is now able to not only create a bigger canopy, but now MULTIPLE overlapping or moving canopy they can send out at greater ranges. This allows the user to defend multiple locations and from multiple attacks at the same time and even attack using their extra canopies, or even defend against an incredibly strong attack that could even destroy an island by layering their canopies

Weaknesses

• The user's canopy will always manifest directly above the user and they cannot position the barrier in any way below the soles of their feet, making them disadvanatged against smaller and more flexible opponents
• Haki is able to crack and eventually break the user's canopy if unrelenting
• Standard Devil Fruit weaknesses apply

Techniques

Cloud Canopy: User creates a quick canopy barrier above themself and their allies to block an incoming attack or hazard such as falling rocks or lightning
Thunder Dome: User turns their canopy into an anchored semi-sphere that they can close on the ground, letting no attack get inside or affect anyone within. The drawback is that the user and anyone inside can use up oxygen inside if their is no breathable air outside of the canopy
Mad Nimbus: User reshapes their canopy into two giant hands connected togther, using them for extra strength strikes and highly defensive blocks. The user can create more hands from their canopy over defensive area
Bamboo Stalker: User summons and transforms their canopy into a large spider-based creature they can hang from with a barrier-made harness, then reach eight long legs to the ground and utilize their canopy to move at impressive speeds. The user can also stab using their canopy spider legs and walk up vertical surfaces while remaining defended
Buzz Sedge: User summons a canopy above their head and adds serrations along the edge of their circular canopy, making it a giant buzzsaw that they can spin and slice with. The user can utilize this as a destructive weapon and defensive shield simultaneously
Fallen Leaf Shuriken: User makes the serrations even bigger and fewer, making their canopy resemble a giant fuma shuriken, then launch it at high speeds at their target to shred them to strips. The user can hold onto their shuriken and use it like helicopter rotors, enabling them flight and faster movement

2023.02.07 11:42 Borchert97 If I could design a sequel to this game...

I really enjoy this game, been playing basically since it came out, my main account on Xbox has over 3,000 hours played and is prestige 19, and I have a second account that's a prestige 6 with nearly 300 hours played, so to say I love this game is a massive understatement, but with that being said, for as much potential as this game has, there's also a lot of flaws and missed opportunities, that I would strive to fix if I was head of development for Shinobi Striker 2.

When they announced a Naruto game where you could make your own character, I guess I got my hopes up a little, this game is essentially a MOBA disguised as an RPG, and I think when they announced this game, a lot of us thought it would be a little bit more equal on the MOBA and RPG elements, really the only thing this game has going for it from an RPG standpoint is the ability to make your own character, and even though that hasn't been fleshed out much, it's still an amazing feature and has singlehandedly turned me off of basically every other Naruto game in existence, so they already have a good core foundation to work with.

What I would want out of a sequel game is to lean more on the RPG aspect, don't just have us design our own character, let us BE our own character. If anyone here has played Attack on Titan 2, in that game you essentially make your own character and have your character inserted into the main story events of the Attack on Titan series, don't just have me make a character and do some generic VR Missions and fight in online battles, make me start as a fresh Academy graduate who barely has any jutsu to speak of, let me have my own Genin squad of either NPCs or real players, like being able to make squads with your friends, have a Jonin Sensei, go on low-level starting missions with your squad, eventually be approved to take the Chunin Exams, when you pass you become a Chunin, eventually after doing enough harder missions, you could be promoted to Jonin and become a Sensei to Genin, or even join the Anbu and take on covert espionage missions. Convert the VR Mission system into going on actual missions out in the open world, so this RPG game would also be semi-open world, with warp points to different locations, like a massive sprawling Leaf Forest, or a desolate desert bordering the Sand Village, you get the idea. As a Genin, the missions you'd take would always be with your squad of other Genin and one Jonin, but once you're a Chunin, you can go on missions with other characters. I should probably say this now, but the game would take place in the Boruto era, so you could go on missions with adult Sasuke, or Sarada, Sumire, and so on. Instead of a VR Master system, you'd actually be able to do training sessions with certain characters to learn jutsus from them, like having Hokage Naruto teach you Sage Mode, or Kakashi teach you Purple Lightning, and so on.

By far my most ambitious idea would be a clan system, where, at the start of the game, when you design your character, you also get to pick one of the notorious clans from the Leaf Village to be apart of, everything except Uchiha and Uzumaki, since those clans are canonically near-extinction, and let's be honest, if Uchiha was an option, 98% of the playerbase would pick it. Some of the more notable options would be Hyuga, Sarutobi, Nara, Akimichi, Yamanaka, Inuzuka, Aburame, basically all the exceptional clans from the Leaf Village. The clan you pick would obvious influence what jutsus you can learn, so learning Byakugan, Rotation, 128 Palms, and so on, would be locked behind picking Hyuga, this COULD throw a little bit of a wrench into the online meta, but to circumvent jutsu restrictions, I would make it so you could have multiple save profiles attached to one account, so for example, let's say I pick Hyuga, but over time as the game's meta develops, it turns out that Aburame jutsus are insanely OP, now I'm sad because I can't use Aburame jutsus, but wait! I can just make another profile as an Aburame to unlock all the jutsus without resetting my account and losing all my shop items, items would be attached to accounts, but the profile you're on dictates which clan's jutsus you'd be using, so it goes without saying you'd never be able to make a build with Byakugan and Insect Jamming on the same loadout, since clan-specific jutsus would only be available to the profiles you have of that clan.

I would want to take a more grounded approach when it comes to jutsus, I don't think giving everyone Susano'o's, Kurama Avatars, and Karmas makes a lot of sense, since powers like that are, in-universe, highly specific to only a handful of characters. Rather, I would focus on having some of the best generic or universal powers available to the player. Things like Sage Mode, the Eight Inner Gates, the 100 Healings Seal, things that hypothetically ANY Shinobi, even in-universe, could learn through training, that aren't specific to having an overpowered eye or tailed beast or Otsutsuki soul inside of you would all be fair game.

I've created a pretty expansive jutsu list or beginner E and D-rank jutsus all the way up to S-rank jutsus. In the Naruto series, jutsus are ranked from E to S, just like the ranks you get at the end of matches in NTBSS, so I'd design the jutsu availability more around the ranks, and have you start with lower-ranked jutsus and learn higher ranks as you progress. Some jutsus would even be universal and not tied to one class, but I'd keep the class system intact for the most part. Substitutions would still always be universal for all classes.

Full Jutsu List-
Example Jutsu Format (Rank) - Class

Default Jutsus:

Substitutions:

Default Secret Techniques:

As you've probably surmised, all the default jutsus are very basic, E and D-rank jutsus that are basically expected to be known by all Academy Students graduating to Genin, don't worry, the default jutsus don't end there, as each clan will also give default jutsus. On top of your clan giving you jutsus, your clan would also give you percentage modifiers to more easily learn certain types of jutsus, for example, Sarutobi would give you a boost to learning any Fire Style jutsus. All jutsus from a clan would be locked behind being from that clan, except for Sarutobi, Fuma, and Lee clan jutsus, since those clans don't have any specific powers unique to them, but rather, they specialize in a certain type of jutsu and master them more easily, those being Fire Style, Shurikenjutsu, and Taijutsu respectively. Clan Default Jutsus will be universally available to all classes ONLY if you're from that clan, for example, if you're not from the Sarutobi Clan, Flame Bombs will only be available on Ranged like normal, rather than being available on all classes.

Clan Default Jutsus:

Clan Default Tools/Fighting Styles:

Clan Default Secret Techniques:

Almost done with the default jutsus, lastly is your nature affinity default jutsus. Just like with how you'd select your clan at the start, you would also select one of the five basic natures as your affinity, so Fire, Earth, Lightning, or Wind. These would also grant your character a bonus multiplier that makes learning jutsus of that type easier, as well as granting you some universal non-class specific default jutsus.

Nature Affinity Default Jutsus:

Nature Affinity Default Secret Techniques:

That's it for the default jutsus, only the defaults would be class-universal, anything beyond this is class-specific and will be more familiar to how jutsus are assigned on NTBSS.

Beyond just the five basic chakra natures, all jutsus would fall under other classifications as well, such as Taijutsu, Genjutsu, Medical Ninjutsu, Shurikenjutsu, and so on. A player's stat card would be represented by an Octagonal Stat Sheet, with each corner representing a certain type of jutsu, Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, Taijutsu, Shurikenjutsu, Medical Ninjutsu, Sage Jutsu, Sealing Jutsu, and Kenjutsu (sword jutsu). As you leveled up in each area, you'd be able to learn and unlock more advanced jutsus of that type. Some jutsus can be of multiple types, for example, Wind Style: Rasenshuriken would both be Ninjutsu and Sage Jutsu, so you'd need a high level in both to learn it, not to mention a mastery of Wind Style Jutsu. You could also form Summoning contracts with Toads, Slugs, Snakes, Monkeys, Salamanders, basically all the normal Summons from NTBSS, you could have more than one, there's precedent for having multiple, Konohamaru can summon both Toads and Monkeys, and Sasuke can Summon both Snakes and Hawks, Summoning contracts would be requiremnts for learning jutsus like Toad Oil Bomb, Some jutsus would also level up and develop over time, for example, Dragon Flame Jutsu was a C-rank Jutsu when Sasuke used it in part 1, but a B-rank when he used it again in Shippuden, Boruto Stream is another good example, when Boruto uses it before learning the Rasengan with just a palm strike, it's probably about a C-rank Jutsu, but when he combines it with Rasengan, it's an A-rank Jutsu minimum. Since I've already covered all the ninjutsu/taijutsu belonging to a specific chakra nature, I'll finish off the jutsu list with the other types of jutsu, like non-nature specific ninjutsu, taijutsu and so on. I'll also try to preserve as many jutsu from NTBSS as possible, within reason, no Susano'os or Kurama avatars, like I said before though.

Kenjutsu:
Some jutsus like Chidori Blade or Halo Dance could go here, but Kenjutsu would be moreso for unlocking higher level swords and what not, not necessarily focused on unlocking jutsus, but it could, Demon Hunter would probably fall under Kenjutsu as well. I've been writing this post for far too long so this is the point where I got lazy.

If you genuinely read this whole post or even skimmed the whole post, this is basically what my dream sequel to NTBSS would look like, let me know what you think.

If you're a member of the dev team and you can read English and you read this post, hire me so I can make the next game better for you. Thanks, bye.

Beating 85 games is not even half as many as last year and even a down year compared to recent years, but still another highly productive year nonetheless. The backlog is always growing, so having big productive years feels very nice to look back on. I feel like I was pulling the trigger on more indie games based on my gut feeling about them than ever before this year, and as such played a higher number of the year's releases than ever before. I feel really good about playing all the 2022 releases that I really "needed" to play, so my backlog didn't really grow too much. That also means however I didn't really scratch as many of the older games off my still over 500 games large backlog. Without further adieu, here are the highs and lows of my gaming in 2022...
One of the big highlights for me was going back and playing old Tom Clancy games I either missed or never finished. I kicked things off with the original Rainbow Six and really enjoyed how much of the squad management and planning factored into everything. The super quick time to kill as well as be killed also kept me on my toes, and made the shooting satisfying. I also played Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear, which took a bit to get running properly, but was a satisfying follow up that was a fair bit easier than the other Rainbow Six games, because the AI was just a tad bit slower to react. Rainbow Six 3: Raven's Shield, which was more or less the same great experience, with a slightly more modern look to it. I also played the only one of these games I owned growing up, the Xbox version of Rainbow Six 3, which is a pretty vastly different game to the PC series. I was surprised at how wild and powerful the guns still felt, and also how much smoother aiming sensitivity on controllers has gotten over the years.
Not playing Splinter Cell: Conviction and Blacklist until now kind of burns me up inside. I shouldn't have let the discourse affect me back then, because Conviction is a more Jason Bourne spin on the series, and Blacklist is a happy medium between that and the original more traditional stealth of the original trilogy. As for the others, despite its age, Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter still has some neat presentation to it. H.A.W.X. was an inoffensive arcade flight simulator. The Division was pretty much what I expected, an unholy union between looter shooter and realistic tactical shooter, but it was mostly fine.
Many of the 2021 games I missed before the end of that year were all pretty good. Age of Empires IV is an excellent RTS and wonderful reinvention of the classic series. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy's writing really stuck out as some of the most fun I experienced all year. Unpacking was a neat little environmental storytelling experience. Fights in Tight Spaces really impressed me with its Jason Bourne brawl tactics, and the soundtrack really stuck with me. And lastly, Boomerang X was a quick and fun arena shooter.
I revisited a few other games from my youth that I really enjoyed, but never finished. Colosseum: Road to Freedom is a gladiatorial game that by many objective metrics probably isn't all that good, but I like it a whole lot. I also played Men of Valor, which I found too frustrating to get very far in my youth, and it kind of showed me why when I played it again. It's more of a cover shooter (and not a particularly good one) than a war shooter in the vein of early Medal of Honor or Call of Duty. Battlefield 1942 isn't exactly the same against bots, but I enjoyed playing through it again for nostalgia's sake.
I played a number of first person shooters in an effort to get closer to feeling comfortable finalizing a Top 100 FPS list. Much to my surprise, the old Saturn shooter Powerslave was perhaps the biggest standout of the FPS games I played, combining some Metroid elements and an overworld map to a Doom like shooter. Strife stood out to me as well, being an early FPS RPG hybrid. There was some neat indie shooters, like Industria which had a sort of BioShock vibe, and Witch Hunt which was like a Spooky Cabela's Big Game Hunter. I also played Descent, which has aged fine from a gameplay perspective, but visually it's really hard to parse on modern monitors without shrinking the resolution, and then it's hard to parse because of the resolution. Another shooter I played that I wouldn't say was great, but better than I expected was Medal of Honor, the reboot from 2010. It's not as good as the Call of Duty's from that time, but I'm surprised they weren't able to iterate on it better to better compete with Call of Duty.
I played a few PS2 and OG Xbox games that scratched my nostalgic itch for that era. Darkwatch was a decent shooter with a cool gothic western aesthetic. Project: Snowblind was a decent enough sci-fi shooter, and Cold Winter was a decent enough spy shooter. Shadow of Rome had some interesting stylish action quirks, but really fumbled with its stealth sections and erratic pacing. Ōkami was perhaps the biggest highlight of games from this era, being a Zelda like adventure that let you play as a wolf in its traditional Japanese artistic world.
I played a number of RPGs of varying quality this past year as well. Pillars of Eternity was a very enjoyable throwback to classic computer RPGs of the late '90s and early '00s. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was a pretty decent RPG in a more Fable mold. Dragon's Dogma was a highly janky game, but there's something special about it surrounding the faux-comradery of the party system that made the game feel like a grand adventure. I also crossed off Snowblind Studios last game, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North off my backlog, a game I've long wanted to play, because I adored the studio, but I always knew it wasn't going to be that great, and it wasn't.
In my search for something along the lines of Condemned: Criminal Origins, I played some first person melee combat focused games. ZombiU is an interesting game that would've benefitted from being less one-note as well as less buggy. Elderborn could have used some more inspired art direction than bland metal.
In preparation for the Forgotten Land, I played a couple more Kirby games to bolster my resume. Kirby's Dream Land 2 is an okay sequel to the original Kirby, but doesn't do anything remarkable. Kirby's Super Star is the far more interesting game, with its many "mini-games." Those mini-games are more like alternate campaigns, and each is compelling and are Kirby at his best. Playing Super Star really showed just how little the Forgotten Land iterated on the formula beyond being 3D.
I don't really know where to put the rest of these games, so I'll just quickly run through them here. The Curse of Issyos is in many ways a fever dream game of mine. The greek myth aesthetic coupled with classic Castlevania gameplay is right up my alley. Dicey Dungeons is a solid rogue-like, but ultimately a bit too long considering subsequent runs with the same classes felt samey. The original Rogue was surprisingly fun despite its text graphics, it's rather difficult and clearly doesn't want you to win, but I was happy to learn it gets easier when you start climbing back out of the dungeon after retrieving the amulet. Total War: Warhammer II should be my kind of game and is clearly well made, but I've never really gotten into the real time aspect of Total War enough to enjoy that element, nor do I care much for the Warhammer universe. A Plague Tale: Innocence was a remarkable story driven game. For a smaller studio, it's really not all that far off of what the big studios under Sony put out. And lastly, Spider-Man: Miles Morales was a cool offshoot to Insomniac's first, and I really enjoyed it was kind of a Christmas game, and also how they reinvented the Tinkerer as a villain.
Some of the lowlights of the year came from playing some of the most infamous games in the history of games. Those games, being Postal and Postal 2. They are both pretty awful even if you disregard their "edginess," but it feels like on a base level, the idea behind Postal 2 could make for a great game. Postal 2 ain't that game.
Garlic was a platformer that looked a lot cooler than it turned out to be. The level design just isn't there. I already know I don't like Serious Sam, but I played Serious Sam: Second Encounter anyway and was disappointed all the same. Call of Duty: Ghosts is truly among the worst Call of Duty games there is, but some of its badness was enjoyable ironically.
That's it for the non-2022 games. I can hardly believe I beat 38 games that released in 2022 myself.
There was an interesting set of classic sidescrollers that game out this year. Beholgar and Infernax being very inspired by Simon's Quest rather than the more popular classic linear style of Castlevania or the more modern metroidvania Symphony of the Night style. Beholgar was solid, but could have used better boss fights or some more panache, but that's where Infernax excelled. Infernax had all the panache Beholgar was missing and is one of my favorite games of the year. Everblade was another sidescroller that was inspired by a less common yet famous sequel as well, that sequel being Zelda II: Link's Adventure. I really enjoyed Everblade and believe it had some of the best level design of the year, certainly the best of any 2D games.
Lots of genres got explored in the indie space that don't often get explored. Signalis and Faith are both inspired by classic horror games. Signalis comes up a bit short to the games that inspired it, like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but it had an interesting atmosphere and mystery to it that made it worth finishing. Faith was perhaps more impressive, as it manages to be quite unsettling in spite of its Atari graphics. Iron Lung might be my favorite horror experience of the year, not because it was the most scary, although it did get me to jump, but because it was just such an interesting concept and original style of gameplay.
I played a number of indie shooters this from this year and Prodeus stood out as the best of them. Whatever you want to call its fancy pixel sprite artsyle, I'm not sure there was a game I liked to look at more than it, and the gunplay was really good too. Cultic was the other standout, having a similarly distinct look, but it was the sound design that really gave it a compellingly grimy feel that I enjoyed. Hands of Necromancy is a neat magical doom or heretic clone. Chop Goblins isn't trying to be too much, and it is fine for what it was trying to be. Neon White was a cool shooter that needlessly shoved obnoxious visual novel writing into itself to distract from the speedrunner friendly platforming puzzle gameplay. Kingdom of the Dead has an interesting look to it, but the gameplay wasn't really all there to make it stand out much. Teardown isn't really much of a shooter, but it was an interesting game that made it equally fun and frustrating to plan and execute heists.
The handful rogue-likes I played were all varying degrees of good. Rogue Legacy 2 was perhaps the best of the bunch, and while it is very similar to the original, the number of small improvements are all great. The new Ronin class in particular felt as good to play as anything else released this year. GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon is cool from a "Hey, Konami did a thing" perspective, and while it's not bad, it's a vastly inferior Dead Cells. Everything about Tinyfolks and its take on the Darkest Dungeon formula was great, except for just how brief it is. It's very good, but left me wanting more. Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate is another fun bite-sized rogue-like and quite the ridiculous take on the game of chess. Cult of the Lamb was a cute hybrid of cult management and dungeon delving, the cult management being the more notable aspect. Shovel Knight Dig isn't exactly what I was hoping for, as I was hoping something more in the same vein as SteamWorld Dig or for a wider variety of knight bosses, but it is a pretty fun rogue-like in its own right. Samurai Bringer was an interesting Dynasty Warriors style rogue like, but despite its interesting systems it was more frustrating to play than anything. The smash hit, Vampire Survivors brought to light the "bullet heaven" genre which is kind of funny term for it, and the game is fun to a point. However, sometimes runs get solidified and victory is all but assured as early as 15 minutes before you can actually end a run, which made more some boring runs.
I tend to avoid tower defense games, but got sucked into a couple this year. Rogue Tower was at times fun, but I can't help but feel there needed to be more to it. Dome Keeper was much more interesting as it had a sort of SteamWorld Dig resource gathering element that I really enjoyed. The tower defense was also manual sort of in the style of Missile Command which was also fun. Like Rogue Tower though, I can't help but feel there could be more to it.
I like puzzle games and played a few of those this year. Taiji was the best of the bunch by far, being the closest thing to The Witness that exists. It's really good and even has some of the meta elements that made The Witness that much more special. Somerville was a bit of a disappointment coming from a cocreator of Limbo and Inside. It's very much that kind of game, but the puzzles aren't interesting and the story moves too fast to really feel invested. The Case of the Golden Idol on the other hand is as good as advertised. Solving mysteries as they get progressively more and more strange and elaborate was very satisfying. Tunic isn't a puzzle game on the surface, but it has a very cool in game manual and a greater Fez style puzzle element to it. I wouldn't say Tunic nails either thing, but it comes close on both ends.
The two other smaller games I played don't fit anywhere else, so I'm lumping together. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge is a fun arcade beat 'em up in the same vein as the Konami games from the '90s, and while it surpasses them from a gameplay perspective, it's hard to imagine liking it all that much if those games didn't exist in the first place. Ghost Song is a solid melancholy metroidvania, that is decidedly more Metroid than Vania. There is a cool quirk to the combat with its heat build up mechanic that's good about encouraging you to mix up ranged and melee attacks. The game doesn't quite deliver with its bosses or other setpiece encounters, but it delivers a better story instead.
There weren't terribly many big games, this year, and the ones I played were either amazing or just okay. Dying Light 2: Stay Human had some good things going for it, but the writing gets distractingly bad and the gameplay never evolves enough to overcome that. Marvel's Midnight Suns suffers from the same problem of writing itself into being less than stellar. The tactics are a welcome alternative to the X-COM tradition, but not enough to really surpass that lauded series.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land is an okay Kirby game, but doesn't do anything terribly impressive considering its the series making its first jump to 3D. It's as if they thought just making Kirby 3D would be enough of an innovation for the series. It's decidedly average Kirby game and decidedly average as a 3D platformer.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is well made in a lot of ways, but in retelling the events of the original Modern Warfare 2, they somehow made it worse, despite that story already being kind of bad. The rebooted Modern Warfare series showed such promise in 2019, but this sequel has me less hopeful for the future. The multiplayer is still fun for a few rounds every now and then though.
Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what you'd expect from a sequel. It plays it pretty safe, existing as a slightly better version of what many call the Ubisoft open world. Fighting the machines with all their weakspots is still enjoyable, but to a much lesser degree this time around.
God of War Ragnarök is also pretty similar to its predecessor, but unlike Horizon, there isn't much like that predecessor. God of War and this sequel are nigh unrivaled in terms of how they deliver a story to the player. I really enjoyed everything about how they ended this arc of Kratos's story, and while it could just be recency bias, or my being a sucker for great conclusions, I think this was the best God of War game to date. I didn't take to the combat in 2018, and still didn't always take to it here, but once I obtained the spear I found myself enjoying it more.
Obsidian really had a big year, and carried Xbox to year I'd argue surpasses that of PlayStation's, but I recognize my tastes aren't as mainstream as most, so if I ever actually argued with anyone, I doubt many would take my side. Grounded is a much more enjoyable game than I thought it'd be. I hate bugs, but something about the plastic sheen everything has made it not so bad, either that or my amygdala is broken. The sense of discovery and wonder provided in this game wasn't unlike that of an Elder Scrolls or Fallout for me. I enjoyed the survival elements well enough, but they weren't the draw here. Fighting giant bugs, exploring the miniature world and fighting to become big again was kept me engaged.
Then there is Pentiment, another "smaller" Obsidian project. I am still struggling for words at how good this game is. It's as brilliant a story as has ever been told in the video game medium. It's a lot of reading, and not a lot of "gameplay," but between the wonderfully drawn medieval aesthetic, beautifully penned calligraphy, charming characters, and the thoroughly encyclopedic portrayal of 16th century Bavaria, I never once minded. Not since Soma has a game executed on player choice so brilliantly.
Lastly we have Elden Ring. What is there to say about it that hasn't already been said? It's ballooned the From Software brand to new heights without sacrificing anything that has gotten them to this point. The Soulsborne brand of game coming directly from From, continues to be unparalleled in the video game world. No games offer a more satisfying blend of characterization, spectacle, wonder, terror and the chance at overcoming great challenges. Elden Ring won't be the last of its kind, but it's the perfect culmination of everything From has been doing over the last decade and change.
That was my 2022 in video games. I had a great time, and I'd do it again. I will do it again. The great backlog war forever wages.

K was a marathon runner in High School and was awarded a scholarship for his athletic abilities which he later turned down in order to pursue his dream of performing. He was a former I-Land contestant who was eliminated in the finale.
BTS were huge inspiration for him in pursuing his dreams of becoming a performer, and in becoming a trainee at HYBE. Jimin and J-Hope especially are two of his inspirations. He has a hardworking, determine and cheerful personality. Although he is older, he prefers that the younger members treat him as if he wasn’t the oldest. He’s &Team’s fake maknae.

Read Part One of Chapter 8!

Chapter 8: Hero’s Path Pt.2

His eyes opened to the sounds of birds calling at the open window; the sounds of Koshin members training below in the courtyard did not seem to bother the creatures as they sang their songs. With coats of blue and yellow, a red beak and green eyes, the Papi was the bird of poets and bards. Judging from their musical tones, Hero could tell the skies were free of clouds, the sun shined across the town unopposed, a drastic comparison to his dreams.
Roya was sleeping in a chair next to his bed, although big enough for her to lay beside him, the sight of her in a chair made his fingers twitch.
Her hands were wrapped around a rosary made from hardwood, her fingernails painted black and she appeared to have been in the process of applying makeup, she smelled of strawberries and autumn roses.
The birds scurried as the door to his chambers opened, a displeased looking man stood there in chainmail and brigandine, he sported no weapon belt.
“Sir Hero of Team du Loc, your captain asked me to send word for you, they are setting out toward Hedeira, the Lord Hima also asks to see you off.” the man said with no pleasure in his voice.
Although he did not know exactly what the issue was, he could give it a strong guess.
Hero smiled and rubbed his hair, trying his best to sound at ease.
“Right, thank you, I just had a long night, please inform my friend and my captain that I will be coming down shortly.”
The man said nothing but nodded as he left, the door still opened, the Papis returned to the window, instead of singing, they watched Hero. His eyes turned toward Roya who was still fast asleep, he moved his hand through the curls of her hair, passing through them felt as if he was running his hand through a warm river. Her ears, the skin of her cheek, her lips all soft as clouds.
She feels so delicate. He thought.
He could see the enraged Roya being bound against a tree with tears in her eyes roaring his name, her third eye remaining fixed on him as he faded from consciousness.
Remembering how she and the child thief Maso ambushed him in Faran, how she used her advanced magical abilities to force him to attend her during the festival. How during the fire dance, he looked into her sky-blue eyes.
She is a distraction for sure, she does not make any sense to me. Kongoro...what more do you know of Onamihime?
No response from his mind even so much as whispered. Hero sat up slowly and gently got out of bed to not wake the sleeping woman, he then began to get dressed. Slipping on a black hose with a white tunic, his usual composition armor, a simple cuirass lined with rock salt, padding, and interlocked ringmail. As he placed his sword belt on, he saw tassels attached to the pummels of his swords in red and black. He looked toward Roya, the dark elf had crawled in bed while he was dressing, her nightgown was soft burgundy cotton, something commoners were known to wear often. Her status was still a mystery, her speaking is formal, a sign of aristocracy yet she does not dress nor behave in the ways of the upper classes.
Come to think of it, her table manners are rude, she does not bow or show respect to Mochi or any other Lady and Lord that I have seen here in Fuma. He was amused just thinking about it.
We are the same in that way I guess Dezirae, we commoners don’t understand or care for all this political stuff. Still…what you said to me at the temple, that cannot happen. I understand your reasons but, I am concerned with one thing, you can’t be apart of it.
“Well, that’s incredibly selfish of you!” Kongoro replied
Hero reached the main hallway of the castle, the walls were lined with golden candle holders, a few boards for the students but otherwise barren, the people that shuffled, conversed, and traveled the halls would on occasion look at him with fascination.
Where the hell have you been?
“Me? Oh, I was meditating, had a lot of thinking to do you know?”
Hero found that hard to believe.
Now that you are here, I have some questions about Onamihime.
“Hmm ok, well for starters, she’s a bit of a hopeless romantic.”
I mean useful questions!
“How is that not useful, you and Roya…”
She is delusional at best; I have explained to her twice now that this cannot be.
Kongoro whistled.
“A little harsh, I think you have justice confused with revenge friend, ever stop to think about what the old man would want for you?”
Hero made it outside as the attendants came forth with his horse Ibi Batu or Red Mist.
“Right on time invalid, easy assignment today, let’s hope you get to at least use those swords eh?” Reinhardt said before putting on his helm.
“Where is Gin?” Hero asked after looking around.
“He went scouting ahead, he isn’t too far, Captain Cooley did say he expects rain to come in soon, so we better ride hard, I am not in the mood to get wet today,” Magari answered.
Reinhardt began to snicker, followed closely by Bop.
“Oh, grow up you two!”
The team rode out of the Fuma town with haste as they followed the road to Hedeira, the countryside of the area looked untouched by the war so far, but to the southwest, Hero could see far in the distance, plumes of black smokestacks climbing in the sky.
“So, the word is we have refugees, not huge numbers like with Faran, but a tight group should be easy for us to guide to Fuma and settle in before the rain comes. Hero you are familiar with Wa Province right, tell me what town is best for them? Magari asked.
Without hesitation Hero replied.
“The city of Arzakan, the capital city of the province and a great place to rally the nation, the northern lands have a climate that the vampires cannot easily withstand, my suggestion is eventually for this coalition to move their headquarters that way.”
“You seemed to have put thought in this matter Hero!” Bop said, holding the reigns with his single hand.
The sight made Hero’s chest hurt.
“I simply wish to fix the situation here as fast as possible, if we get the throne in order, we can fight the vampires much easier, every day that these mothers fight their private wars, it’s another body for the vampire to enthrall to its service!”
The countryside gave way to the thick forest on each side of the road, the horses at this point had slowed to a paced trot, Magari, Reinhardt, and Bop continued in conversation, stopping only to ask Hero further questions about the lands.
Lord Ninniku said Hedeira would make a good place to make a stand against the Allauti, I have told Commander Lucian Tepes about this, so why is it we are the only team sent this way?
“Hedeira may no longer be in danger, it is possible Ninniku simply got it wrong,” Kongoro answered
The hedonistic god did not seem to be the brightest in the pantheon but was a god, could he be wrong?
Lord Ninniku is a god, I-
“The gods are not all-knowing Hero, you know that. Ninniku likely heard a prayer from Hedeira and simply found a means to have it checked out, trust me, don’t put them on a high throne of knowledge, even Koshin is limited in what he could see here.”
Hero felt a bitter feeling in his mind, he has interacted with several gods from the memories he could recall but he forgot something that was commonly known to all.
“I see a caravan up ahead, I can see Gin’s hair from here,” Reinhardt yelled happily.
The team dashed for the caravan, Magari displaying the banners of the Koshin Agi, waved at Gin who was speaking with someone riding in the curtained coach. A bearded young elf approached the captain once the distance closed.
“You are friends I am told, my name is Hikaru of the Clan Osakabe, although my family name is Yasha-Shisa! I am pleased to make your acquaintance!”
He was somewhat taller than Hero, his brown hair fell to his shoulders while his beard stopped just at where his belly button would be.
“Quite the impressive beard I must say, Hikaru, how long have you been nurturing such a thing?” Reinhardt asked
Hikaru laughed as he ran his hands down his beard.
“I think for several years now, the days went by eventually without notice, and well, here we are.”
For a dark elf, Hero could not help but notice there was no noticeable highlight in his hairs, but he did have elven ears. He rode a bit closer to Hikaru.
“Ahh, you must be Hero of Clan Aslan yes?”
Hero was surprised.
“Yes...forgive me but how would know by just a glance?”
“Lilac eyes, lavender- red hair, tan skin, not many have your looks, sir, my lady will happy to see an old friend.”
Magari, Reinhardt, and Bop’s eyes shifted toward Hero. He was confused.
“Do...we know each other?”
Hikaru and Hero stared at each other for a moment before Hikaru rubbed his beard.
“It was a long time ago, but please ask her yourself if you will?”
Hikaru motioned for Hero to pass, he did so followed by everyone else.
Gin motioned for the caravan to continue forward, meeting the team and forcing them to wheel their steeds around and follow closely. The caravan was made up of around fifty or so people with two large carriages carrying what seemed to be the important members of their party, the first was the lady whom Hikaru was speaking of. The second was a mystery but he could hear several voices conversating from within it. Far from his expectations, Gin slowed his pace to meet Hero as they traveled back to Fuma, he had a mischievous grin across his face.
“Just who are you, Hero Aslan, it seems even the high and mighty know you better than I,” Hero rolled his eyes.
“My master was a famous knight across the continent, it just so happens I share his name, naturally people would know me in some way.”
Gin stared at Hero, looked back at the carriage, and back to him.
“According to the lady, you two were quite the pair back during your childhood years, when she explained in detail the boy who saved her, I thought to myself. Wow, that sounds familiar, who do I know who fits such a description?” He teased.
The tale meant little to Hero however, he was still confused by the whole thing.
“I have no memory of that,” Hero stated bluntly.
Gin still was grinning but less so now.
“You are just kidding right?”
“No why would I joke about that?”
The grin disappeared.
“Hero...what do you remember about the name Jingun?”
Jingun? Hero asked himself, the face of a man with red hair and sharp teeth came to his mind.
“It feels familiar, but I can’t see why is this Jingun connected to me and the lady?”
“You should speak to her about this yourself then, I am sorry for prying.”
Gin and Hero were not close, being new to the team, Gin spent much of their early adventures, studying and training. There were other members with them during the War of the Northern Crown, but they died horrible deaths which Gin could have possibly saved, Hero, held that grudge against him. But despite the bad blood Gin always looked out for Hero in a way.
“Gin...you helped me in Faran despite how I’ve always treated you, why?”
“I don’t hold it against you, about why you might dislike me, either way, we are brothers in arms, if we spend our energies infighting, then its more names to crave into the stone.”
Gin’s red eyes stared into Hero’s iliac.
“You should first clear up some things with that old friend first, we are good I promise.”
Hero gave Ibi a slight tug, signaling to his steed to trot at a faster pace, once beside the carriage, he gave it a slight tap with his gauntlet.
The wooden door slid back revealing a silk curtain dividing the two of them, he could see the silhouette of a lone woman with black hair on the other side.
“My lady, I am... Hero Aslan, I have some questions.”
Her gasp was once of excitement and looked as if she was going to pull back the curtain but stopped suddenly.
“H-Hero, yes...what questions do you have?”
He gulped down a fistful of spit, his heart raced just so slightly.
“I do not wish to insult you, but my memories have been rather damaged over the years, I was told we were old friends in our childhood days. Is this true or was my comrade messing with me?”
A silence endured for what felt like ten minutes, Hero felt overwhelmed by guilt but awaited a response. Slowly the silk curtained parted ever so slightly.
A hand softly touched his arm, her skin was fair without blemish or scar and the smell from inside was sweet.
“It is true Sir Hero, we were friends for a short time, but I will never forget you. I apologize for not answering you immediately, I was just a bit saddened by what you told me.”
Hero bit his lip.
“You were traveling with the man known as Kagura, my...father and I had been selling everything we had for coin just to get by. You stopped by where we stayed several times, your eyes were so bright and filled with life. My father found a sword and one day you came by and took a serious interest in it.”
Wait… she doesn’t mean, he thought.
The lady continued.
“Seeing us play so much together must have made my father take a liking to you, you managed to get that blade free from us without having to even ask, later on, my father went missing and eventually the city watch tore down our little place and I was expelled.”
Hero remembered Sir Aslan purifying a coal burner, the man whom Hero remembered getting the tennjo from, but hearing the lady’s tale, he questioned if it was truly a coal burner and not the merchant.
“Did your father… did he ever burn coal, my lady?”
“No, we made our squatter’s hut by the coal burners because no other district would house exiles like us.”
Hero’s racing heart felt like it had burst.
Did we purify her father...but...how?
“I found my older brother in the woods after they expelled me, it was around this time you saved me, you see my older brother died of his illness while searching for food. I came across a camp filled with food, fire, and clothes my size, I was starving, cold, and tired. Eventually, the people who made that camp came back and were disgusted by me.”
Hero’s memory came back to him about that day, he was riding with Sir Aslan after they left town and heard screaming from nearby.
“They beat me, tortured and I believe tried to even rape me, but they were stopped by their leader, Jingun, he looked at me and said those words to me.”
She shuttered before continuing.
“All under heaven shall witness the rising of the red sky, weep for me!”
“Halt!” Hikaru yelled the caravan and its escort came to a stop.
Three people stood alone in the middle of the road, two of them wore long robes of white with blue markings, doomed hats with tassels that obscured their faces. Both appeared to be of equal height, carrying the same armaments, short Nagu blades with red hilts. The third person was a young elf girl no older than possibly three or four years, she was bound by a rope just under the pommel of one of the figure’s sword.
“Are you friends or foes?” Hikaru demanded.
One of the figures turned their back to the caravans and placed their hand on the other’s shoulder before walking off toward the side of the road and suddenly vanishing in thin air. The remaining figure drew his blade, not a quarter of the way out did one of the caravan guard’s hands appeared at the hilt, pushing it back into place. The figure looked started and Hero for a moment thought it was Hikaru.
This guard had hair that was longer than Hikaru’s, no beard but wore the same armor, upon turning for what looked to be a kick, Hero noticed this was a woman.
“She is fast!” Hero commented.
“That is Mizu, she is Hikaru’s twin sister, my best warriors.” said the lady.
The kick was blocked by the figure who drew the blade successfully and swung low, the clang of steel on steel was caused by Hikaru using his glaive. Mizu grabbed the young girl retreated to the group, she arrived near Gin and handed him the child before rushing to her brother’s aid. The figure kicked Hikaru to the ground followed by immobilizing Mizu with a casting unfamiliar to Hero, it was a flash, but he drew Monkey and parried the metal projectiles that were certainly meant for the lady.
Hero’s heart pulsed throughout his body, his hand grew hot and Monkey began to emit a dark aura.
“The will of the gods is not in your favor; the skies will rain blood!” the man said as he launched more projectiles toward them.
Repulse! Gin and Magari cast, the projectiles fell to the ground points up.
“He wasn’t trying to attack this time…” Hero said under his breath. The road in front resembled a porcupine, it clicked just then.
Hero grabbed the lady by her arm and pulled, signaling to Ibi to leap off the road as the metal rods transformed into large spikes and impaling the carriage. Ibi Batu missed his footing and sent both Hero and the lady falling into a defilade. Mizu was still down and Hikaru was wounded from the recent attack.
“My lady, are you ok?” Hero asked just as he turned to see her face for the first time. His eyes trembled as the sun rays peaked between the thick branches above and a blue butterfly landed on her raven black hair.
The memory returned in full, his vision became blurry as a cold crawling feeling crept up his spine, over his shoulders, and clenched his heart.
“Sir Hero!” She screamed the pain caused him to lurch over and vomit. The scar on his face throbbed with pain as he recalled.
Jingun was ready to strike her down when a young Hero launched himself, blade drawn at the small party, killing two of Jingun’s men, the bandit leader swung his sword with great speed and just barely managed to dodge it. Landing in front of the beaten and bloody girl, he stood his ground.
“You are worse than scum for doing this to a little girl!” He screamed.
Jingun’s red eyes looked pupil-less, filled with hate.
“You defy the will of the gods, then you too will weep for me.” He said
Hero rushed forward, doing his best not to telegraphic where he was going to attack. Monkey began to emit a dark aura and pulsate in his grip. Jingun’s eyes changed for a moment, his hatred filled stare changed course toward his blade instead of Hero’s gaze.
“Sing for me, Dolores!” He said, and with those words, a wet popping sound distracted him, then his vision turned red and then dark. The pain came soon after as he fell on his back and stared at the skies with an incomplete sense of reality, one of the skies appeared to be red, the other white, then he saw butterflies with blue wings circle above.
“Hero, please get up!” her voice called, he opened his eyes in time to see the enemy land in the defilade, his shoulder bloody with Hikaru following close behind.
“Hero, your sword!” the lady yelled as she tossed Monkey to him.
Hero caught it and swung for the man, Hikaru swung low and the man leaped in the air but was impaled by Mizu coming from above, a loose spat of blood slammed against the ground followed by the body, his domed hat, and tassels still attached to his head. His body convulsed; his limps seemed to act independently as they tried to drag their way to the lady.
“The golden dawn has set...the red sky shall rise!” the words trickled out slowly and a pool of blood followed soon after. Hikaru swung down upon the neck and picked up the rolling head. The man did not look familiar, but he noticed that the man bore a similar chin marking as those during his fight with Jingun.
That phrase was also similar…
“My lady-”
The lady was frozen in fear, trembling as she seemed to have gone mad, her stare was blank, her head tilted to the side, revealing a missing ear.
“My lady Seraxia, my lady!” Hikaru yelled trying to snap his mistress out of her stupor.
“Burn-burn the body, b-burn them all!” she managed to get out in a fury, she took Hikaru’s dagger and crawled to the body of the man and began stabbing it in a blind rage, covering her eloquent dress in blood. Her eyes were filled with hatred. She wailed and screamed as Mizu placed her in a hold, kicking and biting but the woman refused to let go, even when blood was drawn. As they made their way out, Hero saw Gin reconstruct a new carriage for Lady Seraxia, many in the caravan looked to be wounded and Reinhardt returned from riding ahead, reporting that there were no signs of further ambush. By the time they made it to the Fuma Forest, Lady Seraxia was fast asleep, and everyone was exhausted and on edge.
Upon passing through the gate, the caravan was one of many now in the main plaza, Hero counted at least thirteen different banners, including the Clans Seo, Hongawa, Hima, and Yon.
Master Erena arrived with other members of the Hima guard to greet the new arrivals.
“Captain Magari, by the gods what happened?”
“Ambush, we think a resurrected warrior,” she answered.
The banner of Lady Osha soon was raised with the other 13 clans.
“When did they arrive here?” Hero asked, pointing to the clan banners at the plaza.
“Less than a few hours, Commander Lucian went forth with his coalition plans.”
The sound of a wooden cane against the cobbled stone from behind him made Hero turn around.
An ancient elf dressed in red and black carrying a large zither on his back smiled.
“I see Lucian has finally taken my advice, this is good news...I have one Imperial daughter amongst my company, we should go ahead with plans for a coronation ceremony!”
“You must be Master Komai; Commander Lucian did say you would be arriving with our new Empress!”
“An Empress?” Hero asked.
“Yes, well one who is but a candidate for the throne, there are three more that I know of; so, these are the 13 mothers who will restore heaven? It is a start, my dear students, it is indeed a start.”
Seraxia is a princess?
He thought as he walked with Komai and Master Erena before stopping and looking back. Sometime during the conversation, Hikaru and Mizu securely moved Seraxia away, Magari, Reinhardt, and the others seemed to have gone with them.
Hero escorted the Master Komai and Master Erena to the main keep, talking more about the situation along the way, as they made their way, a few retainers of the Clan Osha were giving Hero looks. When they made it to the main hall, Mochi was standing by the entrance to the Koshin dormitories, a look of discomfort on his face.
“Mochi what’s wrong?” Hero asked, his sworn brother looked as if he wasn’t sleeping.
“The duties of my position have drained much of my energy, but I wanted to do this in person.”
“Do what he asked.” Mochi looked at his friend with melancholy.
“The mothers Osha, Ube, Kano, and Buyi were all in attendance at Faran, a retainer of Ube reported that the woman known as Roya was a member of a thieves guild, did you know this?”
Hero looked down the hall, his dorm room door was shattered from what he could see, splinters of wood were still being cleaned up by servants.
“I knew she was with a few kids who were thieves, but how common is that here, you are telling me you got worked up for that?” Hero tried to sound light-hearted.
He knew what Roya was, so why does the tense feeling in his stomach toss and turn?
“What do you know of her background, do you know anything more than just her name?”
“Dezirae Ala is her name, but she likes to go by Roya for some reason, uh...she is skilled at magic, very advanced and…”
Do I tell him about Onamihime?
Mochi looked as if he was desperate for answers.
“Hero please, anything else?”
“Mochi...what is going on, look just tell me what is wrong?”
Mochi sighed.
“She says you are her husband Hero, after hearing the reports by Lady Osha and Ube, I was obligated to place Roya under arrest.”
A cold chill ran down his spine.
“Arrested, for what and this nonsense about marriage?” Hero asked angrily.
“You know the law here, stop pretending, you both laid together for three days, you saved her life and she saved yours, by all the laws of heaven you are now married, thus you know I must also place you under arrest.”
“For just what Mochi!?” Hero yelled.
“Those children back in Faran, Hero, they are vampires…”

2019.11.03 14:54 ZeroAlucard27 DDT Ultimate Party 2019 Results and Personal Ratings

This was one of the most stacked cards I've seen, and I was at NOAH The Best yesterday in the same arena! This was also about as good an introduction as I could have had to DDT, considering I only have cursory knowledge of the promotion. For example, I didn't know they've got their own umbrella of promotions beyond just DDT, with Basara, Ganbare, and Tokyo Joshi all part of the DDT family.
Anyway, this show was great, and it drew 5,869 people, just under 350 more than what NOAH did yesterday. I think the latter company should be proud of themselves. I'm sure Kenny Omega's return to DDT also moved more than a few tickets. Here's the results and my thoughts.

This match was interesting because I'd never seen a hardcore match with plastic boxes as the only weapon, and this is also taking into account my limited hardcore match knowledge. That was a lot of Tupperware to break, and it was clearly affecting movement since they were all neatly arranged. Fluorescent light tubes are so much more convenient.
Anyway, an interesting starter match, and not a bad one at all.
MATCH 2: KO-D 10-Man Tag Team Championship Mizuki, Asuka, Yuki Ino, Trans Am Hiroshi, & Danshoku Dino def. Hiroshi Yamato, Jiro Kuroshio, Makoto Oishi, Yuna Manase, & Super Sasadango Machine
Yuki Ino pins Super Sasadango Machine at 13:43 with a Spear. (3 stars)
If you want to know why DDT is often defined as purely a "comedy wrestling" promotion this match is a great reason why. And I mean that in the nicest way possible. People who like comedy gimmicks will eat this match up with a spoon. The sequence that led to the pin that Ino got was a true knee-slapper. I dare not spoil it because you folks should see it.
MATCH 3: Gauntlet Tag Match Nautilus (Naomi Yoshimura & Yuki Ueno) def. Yukio Sakaguchi & Ryota Nakatsu, Shuichiro Katsumura & Kouki Iwasaki, Chris Brookes & Maki Ito, The Bakuretsu Sisters (Nodoka Tenma & Yuki Aino), and Twin Towers (Cody Hall & Yukio Naya)
Sakaguchi last pins Naya with a Lariat. (2 stars)
This match was a bit wild and tough to keep track of, but there were plenty of comedy spots again. One of the best ones was when Brookes towered over one of the Bakuretsu Sisters, so they teamed up to get taller than him. Then Brookes recruited Ito to regain the height advantage. This is one of the matches where if I knew who most of the people were, I might've given it a higher rating. There's a chance my mind will change on a 2nd viewing.
MATCH 4: Independent World Junior Heavyweight Championship Keisuke Ishii (c) def. Fuminari Abe at 7:26 w/Pink Kneel Kick (3 stars)
Little did I know that this particular belt was first created by Frontier Martial Arts Wrestling and was inaugurated by The Great Sasuke! This match didn't go too long, but it had pace for days. I didn't see one rest hold in this entire match. I still think it could've gone a bit longer, though.
MATCH 5: UWA World 6-Man Tag Team Championship (Triple Threat) Takumi Tsukamoto, Yasu Urano & Takato Nakano (c) def. Damnation (Mad Pauly, Tetsuya Endo & Nobuhiro Shimatani) and Ken Ohka, Yomehito Imanari & Ms. Mongol
Tsukamoto pins Shimatani at 9:09 w/Dragon Kicker. (2 stars)
Because it was a Triple Threat match with no tags required, that turned this match into a bit of a mess to follow. Even worse when you don't know anyone in the match, as was my case.
MATCH 6: Tokyo Joshi Princess Tag Team Championship Neo Biishiki-gun (Saki-sama & Misao, c) vs. Rika Tatsumi & Miu Watanabe
TITLE CHANGE! Tatsumi pins Misao w/Missile Hip (2.75 stars)
I read a little bit on Voices of Wrestling about this match, and how Neo Biishiki-gun haven't exactly been the best tag champions despite a pretty good pedigree. It proved to be an emotional win for Tatsumi and Miu, with folks on Twitter echoing that statement, especially for the latter. However, this match was a bit slow and a little botchy in parts. Unlike a later match that I can forgive a bit, this match was a bit bleh.
MATCH 7: KO-D Tag Team Championship Fatal Four-Way Hardcore Match Damnation (Daisuke Sasaki & Sama Takao) def. All Out (Akito & Shunma Katsumata), Fuma & Yusuke Kubo, and Sento Minzoku (Minoru Fujita & Daiki Shimomura)
Sasaki submits Shimomura with a Cross Facelock. (3 stars)
This was one hell of a car crash. I was honestly expecting more tables, but there were just two, and both of them were stacked on top of the ladders, creating a platform. As expected, there were some scary bumps to be had in this match. The ladders aren't made of papier maché like they are in WWE, so when someone was dumped to the outside onto a ladder, the ladder didn't break. Scary stuff (I was chanting "please don't die" at one point).
Classic Jeff Jarrett guitar shot on Shimomura set him up for the Cross Facelock. I could get used to seeing stuff like this. It wasn't your prototypical TLC match, but given how sanitized the TLC matches I'm used to seeing are, I'll take it.
MATCH 8: Union MAX Championship (Pro Wrestling BASARA) Ryuichi Sekine (c) vs. Masahiro Takanashi
TITLE CHANGE! Takanashi pins Sekine w/Takatonic. (3.5 stars)
If you had any questions about Pro Wrestling BASARA, then by all means, check this match out. It ended rather suddenly with the Takatonic, but wow, was this match fun.
MATCH 9: Princess of Princess Championship (Tokyo Joshi) Shoko Nakajima (c) vs. Yuka Sakazaki
TITLE CHANGE! Sakazaki pins Nakajima w/Magical Magical Girl Splash (4.25 stars)
Fans of All Elite Wrestling who might've remembered Yuka Sakazaki from the Joshi Pro Wrestling exhibition at Double or Nothing now have a great reason to see her. She wrestled a hell of a match against Nakajima today. The match started off with some good chain wrestling, and from there, these two ladies told a story of respect in the ring. Each one respected the other's skills, but not to the point where it got boring. Sakazaki is athletic as hell, and showed it time after time, even once doing a damn cartwheel on the top rope.
She and Nakajima got a little too athletic for their own good at times, with some slips and a couple botches, but nothing awful. Sakazaki now is in her 2nd reign as Princess of Princess Champion. Hopefully it lasts a while.
SEMIFINAL: Kenny Omega & Riho vs. Antonio Honda & Miyu Yamashita Omega pins Honda w/One Winged Angel (4 stars)
I swear, Riho is getting better every time I see her wrestle. She's hardly fancy, nowhere near the athlete that many of her contemporaries are, but she's just technically sound and tells a great story in the ring. It helps that she was with one of the best wrestlers in the world in Omega.
No flies on Honda and Yamashita, they were great as well, but this was Omega's match. This kinda felt like a Greatest Hits bout for him. He almost came out to his AEW theme, but then a clock came up on the screen, symbolically turned backwards, and we got his original DDT theme. The crowd popped hard for that. He also did some of his old stuff like the Time Stopper, did a modified Aoi Shoudou, and mixed it in with his new stuff like You Can't Escape and Rise of the Terminator.
Of course, it isn't a DDT match without a little bit of comedy, and we got that from Honda. Again, no spoilers beyond the results, but it was another good bit. The crowd were hot for this from beginning to end, and it was fun.
MAIN EVENT: TITLE FOR TITLE HARASHIMA (DDT Extreme Champion) vs. Konosuke Takeshita (KO-D Openweight Champion)
TITLE UNIFICATION HARASHIMA pins Takeshita w/Somato (4.75 stars, Match of the Night)
An emotional match from beginning to end. In the run-up to this match, Takeshita had submitted HARASHIMA twice with the Boston Crab, and was looking to do it again, targeting the low back pretty much all match. Takeshita actually had his man dead to rights in the middle of the ring, but got distracted by HARASHIMA's stable-mates, and engaged in some heeling to get them away.
When I complained yesterday about wanting Kaito Kiyomiya to have more even fights with his opponents in NOAH as GHC Heavyweight Champion, this is what I mean. HARASHIMA and Takeshita were even more or less the whole way, both trading bombs, neither giving an inch. Many kind of dismiss DDT as solely a comedy promotion, but matches like this one prove that DDT can indeed be serious when it needs to be with its wrestling. Easily MOTN, with the Sakazaki/Nakajima match coming in 2nd.
And that'll be it for me from Tokyo for a couple months until I come back for the smorgasbord of New Year's Wrestling in Tokyo!
MY TENTATIVE NEW YEAR'S RASSLIN' SCHEDULE AJPW New Year Wars (January 3rd, Korakuen Hall) DDT New Year Lottery Special (January 3rd, Korakuen Hall, ALL SEATS 2000 YEN!) Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling '20 (January 4th, Korakuen Hall) Wrestle Kingdom 14 Night 1 (January 4th, Tokyo Dome) Pro Wrestling NOAH Reboot (January 5th)
See y'all soon! Run the ropes hard and never neglect the yoga!

2018.04.23 09:30 RomanoffBlitzer Glitchology

Just some world-building and timeline stuff I wrote up quickly.
Glitches have been known to exist since ancient times, but only in remote pockets of the world and esoteric cults. For the majority of mankind's existence, OLDEN had little influence on the world, as the voices had not arrived and created holes in the Dimensional Barrier for OLDEN to exploit yet. Thus OLDEN's influence was limited to a few cracks in reality, cracks where it could whisper its maddening words to the unlucky and receptive. Glitch Pokémon would accumulate in areas where OLDEN's influence was strongest, and cultists would congregate around these areas, trying to exploit these glitches to their own ends. But overall, it came to little; the glitches simply did not have enough influence on the world. When the voices arrived to Ransei to possess Lady Abn3pa and the infamous ninja Kotaro Fuma, OLDEN followed them, but as the voices' connection to the world was too stable due to their usage of democracy, the glitches couldn't leak out much more than they already had.
It was not until the voices arrived en masse to possess Red that OLDEN gained its foothold on the world. As soon as Red was possessed by the voices, even before Red completed his journey and found out about the threat of OLDEN, OLDEN began to act. OLDEN began to call out to those receptive to its words, people like Bugsy, recognizing that it needed a stable, non-glitch, presence in the world to achieve its goal of destroying the world. OLDEN cults began to spring up, such as the OLDEN-TORTOISE and the OLDEN ROD. Some followed OLDEN because they believed in its message, whether they believed that message was one of benevolence or malevolence, but others joined OLDEN to exploit the glitches and gain power over reality. The glitches had a wide variety of reality-warping applications: Summoning powerful Pokémon from beyond the veil? The arbitrary duplication of matter? The fusing of otherwise normal Pokémon? The potential seemed endless!
Thus was born glitchology, the study of glitches.
The first glitchologists were the glitch mages, powerful individuals associated with OLDEN cults who sought to wield the power of the glitches. Individuals like Sho (known usually by his full title, SORCERER'SSHO) relentlessly studied the glitches, hoping to exploit their powers for glory and profit, often using fellow OLDEN cultists as guinea pigs. (The cultists usually didn't mind being used as such, as they eagerly welcomed the chance to become one with oblivion.) However, the glitch mages heavily distrusted each other, and although they sometimes collaborated and took on apprentices, they rarely shared knowledge, fearing that other glitch mages would usurp them and take their knowledge. Indeed, Sho was forcibly imprisoned inside the PC by one of his apprentices after the apprentice learned everything he knew. Also, since the glitch mages practiced their occult arts in secret, away from polite society, they didn't have the resources that organized scientists had. This slowed the development of glitchology in the months before the founding of the Helix Inquisition.
(Incidentally, after escaping the PC, Sho would eventually isolate himself on top of Mt. Silver, studying the cracks in reality that had accumulated there, and he would eventually meet and fight against Baba. Sho made a point of using regular Pokémon, as glitch Pokémon were often so unstable that using them was impractical.)
As a result, the first person to organize glitchology into a real discipline was Red.
Red discovered the glitches after coming into contact with the voices from the future, after they had played Anniversary Crystal. The voices first led him to the coast of Cinnabar, then to Glitch City, showing him just how deeply the glitches were intertwined with the world. Thus Red resolved to learn as much about the glitches as he could to combat the threat OLDEN posed.
Red was the first glitchologist to not be driven by power or madness; he was motivated by the desire to stop OLDEN, and possibly use the glitches to benefit society. He was also the first legitimate glitchologist, as he was backed by powerful organizations and had access to lots of material resources. Red gathered a team of scientists across the world, the best and the brightest (including Fennel), to assist him in studying the glitches. The Helix Inquisition set up a base on Cinnabar Island, observing and catching MissingNo. and 'M. They also led raids on OLDEN cults, and seized the glitch knowledge they had.
Meanwhile, after Helix's death on top of Mt. Silver, the Outsiders descended on Moscopole, annihilating it as Bill watched. The experience allowed Bill to see and shape the cracks in reality; he had become a glitch mage. Bill began to study the glitches as well, assembling a network of contacts not just for his plan to oppose the gods, but to fund and assist his research into the glitches. Using his research and his newfound abilities, he created the cyberspace-esque pocket dimension he used for the Randomizer, the one he would eventually be put Alice in. While the Helix Inquisition was better-funded, Bill had a far better appreciation of the threat that OLDEN posed, and the Helix Church was too busy squabbling with the Church of Dome, so Bill became a leading expert in the underground world of glitchology. After Bill's fall, the Helix Inquisition seized Bill's research, furthering their knowledge.
Fennel was the first person to combine both approaches to glitchology. Benefiting from both close contact with Red, Bill, and the OLDEN cults, the resources of the villainous team bosses she allied with, and her previous experience with extra-dimensional phenomena, Fennel began to discover secrets known by neither Red or Bill, secrets that other glitch mages would never have come up with on their own. Fennel devised many uses for glitches, which rank among the darkest and cruelest applications of glitchology that ever existed. Fennel could brainwash people, control minds, summon glitches to torture people, and other things that would be better left unsaid because they would be spoilers, not because they would be too horrific. Fennel remains perhaps the most powerful glitch mage in the world, but as her paranoia exceeds that of most other glitch mages, she never shares her knowledge.
If glitchology grew by leaps and bounds after OLDEN's arrival into the world, it exploded after OLDEN's fall and the rise of Orgam Lorple. OLDEN was focused on its goal of destruction, and as such was careful with who and when it gave its secrets to. Orgam Lorple, on the other hand, was not so picky. Formerly a glitch subordinate of OLDEN, Orgam Lorple had different goals than OLDEN; while OLDEN wanted destruction, Orgam Lorple wanted chaos. After Orgam Lorple mantled OLDEN, in effect becoming the second OLDEN, Orgam Lorple began to spread glitch knowledge freely, giving the secrets of glitches to mortals who caught its interest for shits and giggles. Fennel quickly became one of the god's favored mortals, as their goals truly aligned, and Fennel's power began to grow even more. Other mortals, seemingly at random, would develop glitch abilities; they ran the gamut from good to evil.
Larry was not one of these mortals. A seemingly normal kid with an unexceptional parentage and backstory, Larry was nevertheless an evil child who seemingly developed a fascination with the glitches out of nowhere. He acted polite publicly, but would abuse other children secretly. It was bad luck, then, when the voices came to possess him on his first day as a Pokémon trainer. Larry was given knowledge of the glitches he so desired, and his first evil act came when he swapped his starter Squirtle out of existence to summon an Outsider. Immediately after, he teleported into the Pokémon League and temporarily brainwashed the Elite Four into believing that he was the Champion. Larry's glitch powers developed rapidly throughout his Pokémon journey, assisted by the vast stores of knowledge bestowed to him by the voices, and by the time he beat the Elite Four legitimately, his power was immeasurable. Larry disappeared after becoming the Champion, leaving to parts unknown.

AC4: From MIDI, VSTis + note corrections
ES: 3rd pty Cover

ENcode

is ogg vorbis FUMA, targeted for maxRE decoders. If you have an in-phase decoder, reduce W by up to 30% or -3dB to taste. Vorbis & MoA cuz my internet is slow.

Format

is 1.2oA FUMA (Mixed order) padded to 9ch. Convert to ambix if req'd. I'm assuming you're using REAPER to decode. They should look like this: https://i.imgur.com/h5VQwwf.png . If they aren't, you've got the wrong channel order.

Dirty secret

They're not native oA, they're actually mixed in surround, and I used my massively hacked-together surround-to-1oA converter. I spent a few hours over the last few days to research, add, and test the R channel - you have many speakers & the vertical is gonna sound blurry if I don't. Well, it's gonna be blurry anyway since it's 1oA. I only have 4. With WXYZR it should sound the best on 3 layers of <9 speakers, or a dome-like setup. On my 18ch simulations the levels look OK.

BONUS

Here's a regular quad song: http://www.mediafire.com/file/o2bv9oc2ngg6phd/6LRSmidi2-40n.m4a Binaural HRTF ver: http://www.mediafire.com/file/ct24vhlpxetk7bn/6LRSmidi2_HRTF_BD.mp3
PS: Is my loudness OK? Any loudness targets for oA? How's your loudness workflow? ALSO: what's your setup like & does your decoder use HRTF/reverb?
