2024.05.19 16:48 MaciejxW Have you noticed the date?

Hi! I’m re-watching the 1st movie with my wife and suddenly in the scene with first owl post Harry gets the newspaper from Ron. The issue of Daily Prophet is from Friday, August 14, 2001 which is an obvious mistake in timeline. And I’m not talking about the month itself (the Howgard’s school year starts as regular non-magical one) but the year! Harry was supposedly born in 2nd half of 1980’s (IDK the exact year). Do you know if it is a some kind of special date for the movie makers?

2024.05.19 16:48 Inside-Personality99 [GM4F] Long-term fantasy adventure

Salutations, everyone who's reading this, heh. Today I want to suggest RP in my own fantasy setting, which I have been previously using for D&D: it is going to be (I hope so, at least, ehehe...) long-term, with the story getting intensified from internal problems of several regions of a certain kingdom, through some "big politics" stuff, right to the global "metaphysical" conflict, involving god-like entities! I am going to take the role of a GM, creating the scenery of Y/C's journey and playing as all the friends and foes (as well as, uh, some random folks here and there, huh). As for the possible romantic interests, I can give you pretty much of possible variety here - just tell me about your preferences you want to be met (if you want this aspect to be included in the RP).
There are pretty much variations of who your heroine can possibly be, but some details are essential for the main plot I'm planning to have in this RP. She is living in a kingdom called Daustgard and has been serving its king Arawn II (nevertheless, not directly) well enough (or, for example, is known as a very talented scion of one of the noble families) to be granted with the chance to become a royal "seneschal", a special agent, getting their orders exclusively from the sovereign and standing aside from the feudal and bureaucratic hierarchy, executing especially important missions (also the very first one to get this title since the rule of previous king). Everything matching the possibility of such promotion is welcomed (and, if you aren't sure what to pick, I have some possible backgrounds, which are still pretty "customisable" in some aspects, to provide you with), different fantasy races (and, of course, different ethnic groups of humans besides "native" Daustgardians) are available too: despite Daustgard being ruled and mostly inhabited by humans, many dwarves, drows, gnomes and halflings live here too, and representatives of other main "sentient races" of the known world also aren't something too exotic (well, I'm mostly speaking about "non-dark" branches of elves, "half-blood" humans (half-elves, half-orcs (and yep, in my setting there is an explanation, why only elves and orcs are able to have "natural hybrids" with humans), tieflings, aasimars and genasi), as this country is pretty active in trading and diplomacy (and also not so deeply affected by interracial stereotypes and prejudices as most of the other lands, huh).
The last thing I would like to mention: be ready to spend a certain amount of time discussing different stuff before we would start the RP itself, I definitely will have to give you, at least, some basic information about the world in general and Daustgard specifically. So, if you're still reading this - thankies! PM me or leave a comment if you're interested, please.

2024.05.19 16:47 Squiddlingkiddling Hard Day: it’s hitting different today

I’m feeling really unrelatable and alone right now, if anyone can express shared feelings/experiences/encouragement I would feel so grateful.
I’m at a conference out of state currently. My dad died in Feb and we had a complicated relationship living together around the time he passed. I’ve missed him generally, but I think I’m experiencing the first time I desperately want to see him and I can’t.
My dad used to worry too much about me to the point it was problematic. But now I’m somewhere on my own and I have nobody worrying about me, or thinking about me. Nobody waiting for my return. I feel so hallow and empty. I feel like my roots are gone. Moreso than I’ve ever felt since his death.
The times that were good memories for me the past year were when I came back from a trip and getting to tell him about it. I enjoyed the “ah, I’m finally back home” feeling so much. Now I can’t go back to that. That version of my life is gone.
I’m dealing with something that feels so isolating and lonely. I’ve been sneaking off to cry because I don’t want to answer “what’s wrong??” with the truth. Like, oh, yeah it’s just that I found my dad after he committed suicide a few months ago and this is the first time I really crave his presence in a non-complicated way” is relatable to anyone here. It just makes other people uncomfortable and makes me feel like I can’t relate to others.
There’s even another person here I met who lost a parent the same month I lost my dad. I had to politely remove myself from the conversation because their grief felt so painfully different. I crave that uncomplicated grief, because my experience with suicide is such a touchy subject. Nobody knows what to say.
Every time suicide comes up, I become the most unrelatable person in most spaces. It’s driving me into a hole.
That’s when my brain went “ah, Reddit. I need to post this on the suicide bereavement subreddit”. I think you all are the only ones in my life that can relate in this intimate way. I’m so thankful for that. Even typing this out, I feel better I think…

2024.05.19 16:44 Embarrassed_Stick913 My ex still not over relationship from a year ago

I (15M) was dating this girl when we were both in 8th grade last year. This was the first time either of us had dated so It was kind of awkward at times. We dated for about 5-6 months and mix the awkwardness with her strict parents, and her being a complete pyscho I just just decided it was time to break up. After that we kind of went on and off a little but then completely stopped talking (after she tried to get with a kid two grades younger than her)
It's now a year later and she's trying to sabotage my life. Saying lies about me that came out of absolutely nowhere. Becoming friends with my friends to make me uncomfortable and turning people against me and saying stuff about my life in places she shouldn't be. She also admitted to stalking me but said"shit sucks sometimes"
I just had to share this because it's really bothering me and somehow she's even getting my friend group to turn against each other somehow

2024.05.19 16:43 19ghost89 Do you think it's weird to go to high school graduation if you weren't invited?

For clarity, I am a 7th grade teacher, and I don't go for any particular student. I go to see all of my students who made it all the way through high school walk across the stage. I'm just proud of them and want to see them.
That said, I know that to go to a graduation ceremony, you need a ticket, and to get a ticket, you (theoretically) must be invited by someone. Last year was the first year any of my 7th graders were old enough to walk the stage, and I ended up getting an extra ticket from someone who didn't need it. I am trying to do that this year too. When I went last year, I was happy to see my kids walk, but I also didn't want to be weird randomly going up to them after all these years, so I just kind of hung around for about 30 minutes after the ceremony to give them a chance to see me and recognize me and come over to me, if they wanted to. Nobody did. Idk for sure if anyone recognized me, though. It's a big school graduating in a very public place, so they might not have even seen me or realized I was there.
Anyway, I'm proud of my kids and I'd like to see them walk even if they don't know I came. But I also would like to talk to a few of then again. I just don't know if it would be considered weird for me to be there by myself. I'm probably putting way too much thought into it, but as far as I know, I don't know of anybody else who is going that doesn't have a kid graduating or wasn't specifically invited.

2024.05.19 16:43 formerly_Puz Versatility upgrades

I've been playing this game for about 4 months and put in around 120 hours in that time. I love it, it's the first shooter I've actually enjoyed playing frequently since CoD MW2.
I cannot help but feel, however, that there's some things that could be done, especially to heavy weapons call-downs, that would improve gameplay, or simply make each system more versatile or interesting to play with.
So I give you a rough idea of so-called "Versitility upgrades"
Airburst Rocket Launcher: HEAT Submunitions- reduces submunition count by 50% in favor of larger anti-armor submunition (Medium armor)
Thermobaric Warhead: Replaced submunitions with a single, powerful high-explosive Incendiary warhead (DoT, deploys a small AoE burning similar to Incendiary impact with a primary blast similar in size to an impact grenade)
Autocannon:
SAPHE munitions: Reduces armor penetration for an increase to area of effect explosive
Enhance Combat Optic: Increases FoV and zoom for increased ADS time
Anti-Material Rifle
SLAP: Removes all HE damage and decreases damage overall in favor of firing a sub-caliber tungsten sabot (Highest penetration available)
Magazine Webbing: increases reload capacity by 50%
Arc Thrower:
Flux capacitor: Reduces cool-down between firing for the cost of reduced range
Amplitude Modulation: Modifications to electric wave forms allow longer ranges at the cost of reduced damage
Overclocking: Modification dramatically increases damage at the risk of overcharging coils, resulting in massive static discharge.
Expendable Anti-Tank:
PLOS Warhead: reduces units per call in to 1 in exchange for a guided missile unit
Payload warhead: Deploys a chemical agent in lieu of a HEAT munitions
Flamethrower:
Pressure Tank: Replaces backpack slot with a large capacity fuel tank, giving the equivalent of a full load of spare tanks
High-Pressure lines: increases range by 50%, but reduces period of fire by 50%
Laser Cannon:
Liquid Helium coolant: increases duration of firing by 25%, reduces cooldown by 25%, but reduces damage by 25%
Focusing Lense: Increases damage by 25%, but reduces firing duration by 25%.
Stalwart:
Vertical Foregrip: Adds a foregrip to reduce muzzle climb at the cost of reduced capacity
Improved feed pawls: Titanium feed pawls and modifications of the gas system allows for longer belts at the cost of a lower rate of fire. 500 round capacity, 1 reload requiring the player to remain in place; locked to 700rpm
Machine Gun:
Commando Box: Allows the Machine Gun to be loaded on the move at the cost of reduced ammunition capacity (75rnd link, 3 reloads)
Assaulters Pack: Replaces the belt mechanism with a powered backpack which holds 450rnds of ammunition
Heavy Machine Gun:
Assaulters Pack: Replaces the belt with a power-feed backpack (200rnd capacity)
Hydraulic Buffer Mechanism: Internal upgrades create a continuous Recoil mechanism, reducing recoil, but lowering Rate of Fire
Grenade Launcher:
SAPHEI Grenades: Semi-Armor Piercing High Explosive Incendiary warheads Increases damage against armored targets and gives a chance to apply Incendiary effect at the cost of AoE effect and reduced damage against non-armored targets
OR
HEDP Warhead: High Explosive/Dual Purpose Warheads increase damage against armored targets at the cost of lower explosive payload
Flechettes: Replaces conventional HE grenades with a flechette warhead, offering medium armor penetration and a wide spread
Spear:
SACLOS guidance: Removes IR Guidance and Lock for a Semi-Active Command Line of Sight missile, which tracks point of aim
Kinetic Kill Vehicle: Replaces explosive Payload with a solid warhead and more efficient fuel, giving the missile armor-piercing ability (High damage, high pen, no splash, cannot kill fabs or bug holes)
Rail Cannon:
Gallium Capacitors: Removes charge time, but fixes railgun at 60% power
Heavy Slug: Requires full charge, firing a significantly heavier slug for greater damage and penetration
Quasar Cannon:
Regenerative Coils: Recovers heat-energy to be used to fire more rapidly, at the cost of power (25% damage reduction, returns fire rate to pre-nerf)
Saftey Override beam: Allows the Quasar to fire a continuous wave in case of emergency, but forces unit to a long cool-down (2.5sec firing phase for a 45 second cool-down)
Recoilless Rifle:
White Phosphorus Warhead: Fires an Incendiary mixture, coving a wide area in smoke and fire at the cost of no armor penetration and a smaller primary blast
EMS warhead: Creates a static field (similar in size to the EMS Mortar)
Eagle Strafing Run:
Chain Guns: Large caliber chain-guns fire more powerful munitions at the cost of lower ammunition capacity. Greater AoE and damage, reduces cooldown counts to 2 (3 with upgrade)
Gun pods: Adds two gunpods to hardpoints in lieu of bombs (Increases damage, denies player ability to deploy other eagle strategies, +2 uses)
Eagle Airstrike:
Guided Bomb Unit: Deploys Three bombs which automatically target objectives and the largest enemies in the area.
Mixed Muniton Payload: Deploys Two HE, Two Cluster, one Napalm/Chem, and one EMS strike.
Eagle Rocket strike:
LOX rocket: Deploys a very high-speed Rocket able to destroy all but the most hardened targets (Hellbomb objectives) but lacks explosive Payload.
HE-FRAG warhead: Removes Armor penetration for greater AoE effect
Air-to-Air Sortee: Replaces ground attack with IR guided missiles for Airborne threats (4 rockets)
Eagle Cluster Bomb:
DICM munitions: Lower AoE and reduced munitions count for medium armor penetration
Mixed Munitions Payload: Mixed Muniton Payload: Deploys one HE, four Cluster, one Napalm/Chem/EMS.
Eagle Napalm/Smoke:
Mixed Muniton Payload: Deploys EMS in conjunction with Napalm/Smoke (50/50 split)
Eagle 500kg:
Air-Burst fuzing: The 500kg Bomb now detonates at altitude, at the expense of limited damage to heavily armored foes (can not destroy objectives)
Eagle Hellbomb: Deploys a fuzed NUX-223 Hellbomb. Eagle must resupply after deployment.
These upgrades could cost Requisition slips and samples to unlock; say, 5000 req slips and 5-10 samples of the Common or Rare variations depending on potential level of unity or level of unlock of the actual systems.
While this list isn't comprehensive, I feel it gets the idea; most of these are based on real-world equivalence of weapon systems or similar proposals of munitions and weapons.
Apologies for lack of illustrations. Thank you!

2024.05.19 16:41 Dependent-Athlete745 AITA for refusing to change my wedding date to accommodate my sister's vacation plans?

Me (28F) wedding is scheduled for September 15th, a date that holds special significance for my fiancé (30M) and me because it's our anniversary. We've been planning this day for over a year, and everything is set in motion — venue, vendors, invitations sent, the whole nine yards.
Enter my sister (32F), who recently booked a non-refundable, two-week vacation to Italy with her boyfriend, leaving on September 10th. She claims she forgot my wedding date when booking the trip. Now, she’s demanding I move my wedding date so she can attend. She insists it’s unfair for me to expect her to cancel a trip she’s been looking forward to for months.
I suggested she could join us virtually, but she scoffed at the idea, saying it’s not the same. Our parents are pressuring me to accommodate her, arguing that family comes first and that it’s just a date. They’ve even gone as far as to say they might not attend if she can't be there, hoping that will push me to change my mind.
However, changing the date would mean losing our deposits and re-planning everything, which would be both stressful and expensive. My fiancé and I are firm about keeping our original date, but now my family is accusing me of being inflexible and selfish.
So, Reddit, AITA for refusing to change my wedding date for my sister’s vacation?

2024.05.19 16:41 Mross506 Best Books/Podcasts for those like us?

What is your go to Book or Podcast that scratches the itch of battle tactics, modern warfare, geopolitics focused on conflict? I've read 100's of books over the years and need a new honey-hole for material. Fiction or Non-fiction is fine but it cannot be sci-fi or about a lone CIA operator. I want to learn about the teams that have one war, the weapons they used, the tactics they deployed....
I have a deep developed passion for content regarding modern wageopolitics and any genre battle tactics. I've read all of the classics like Helmet for My Pillow, Band of Brothers, virtuall everything coming out of GWOT (I am an Infantry veteran from GWOT) and need something new.
Recently, I have been reading pdf downloads from the US DOD, Defense Strategy, China, etc but it is much easier for my to listen via audible, etc while working which this format does not lend itself to.
I'd like to find a new fiction series for easy reading but more often than not, can't stomach it after a few chapters because it is so far fetched or lacks quality content. (If one more person writes about the solo-Navy SEAL seaking his retribution for a murdered family while serving on an Ultra-Black, Presidents eyes only unit...)
I love deep diving the details and understanding how the details. Is there not a modern-Tom Clancy producing material? As a child of the 90's, that was the perfect balance of attention to detail, believability, and action. (Until he stopped actually writing the books!)
I read alot of non-fiction as well but find myself loosing interest because they carry as much excitement as my history textbooks did in 10th grade.
TLDR: I need new books to read that are exciting yet realistic focused on war, battle tactics. etc.

The shoe has a Nike Zoom Air unit in the forefoot, which the brand said helps provide energy return and responsiveness, as well as an updated band system that wraps around the midfoot for a glove-like fit. Underfoot are rubber outsoles with a new "S"-inspired herringbone pattern for multidirectional traction, which is a nod to the initials and number of Sabrina Ionescu, who is a celebrated basketball player.

Nike has also included an exposed Swoosh and an "I" underfoot, which alludes to the hooper's last name and the exclamation point she puts on her game.
The Nike Sabrina 2 signature collection will be available in select colorways that will feature mirror-finished Swooshes. The brand stated that these serve as an affirmation from Sabrina to the next generation to see themselves in the shoe. The collection will be available in grade-school sizing, making it accessible to a broader audience.
Sabrina 2
Apart from the shoe, Nike and Ionescu have also created lifestyle apparel that reflects the baller's personal style. The apparel has personal design cues inspired by Sabrina's name and background. This includes two T-shirts, a hoodie, a short, and a reversible bomber jacket. The pieces feature her signature logo, which is an ambigram that takes on the appearance of a continuous link, honoring family and loyalty.
Nike has also announced that both the shoe and select apparel will be available in kids' sizes for the first time, including a hoodie and short. This move by Nike shows their commitment to inclusivity and making their products accessible to a broader audience.
The Nike Sabrina 2 signature collection is set to arrive on June 28 and is expected to be a massive hit among basketball fans and fashion enthusiasts alike. With its unique design and personal touches, the collection is a true representation of Sabrina Ionescu's personality and style. 2024.05.19 16:39 FALabs A humble call to the community (survey on game creation)

Hi dear Fantasy World Building community,
I am sending this message through different reddit communities and it is mainly focused on game creation and writing (through platforms like RPG Maker, Twine, Ren'Py and others).
First of all, I am kind of new and unfamiliar with Reddit, so apologies if I infringe on any rules. Please let me know, and I will correct any mistakes.
To introduce myself, my name is Alioune, a 35-year-old French game-making, amateur creation, and interactive fiction enthusiast. I run a (French-speaking, sorry XD) blog on these two subjects: https://medium.com/@aliounebfall In addition to my blog, I am working on a project for an amateur creation platform. As part of this project, I would like to conduct a small market study through a survey (very quick, less than 5 minutes) to understand the habits of creators and writers. Hence my call to the Fantasy World Building community.
For those who wish to participate in the survey, feel free to do so here: https://us2.list-manage.com/survey?u=2fc1d183a9c7896d5e4cd6867&id=201fb4b454

2024.05.19 16:38 GameRevolutionary Everwayne - 4Tale Production - Card Roguelike, in the best traditions of Slay the Spire where you need to save the world.

Hello Games! This is my first mini-article post on Reddit, so please don't judge too harshly :) The story behind creating our game is more like inspiration and a desire to create something of our own. Our first encounter with roguelike projects began, of course, with Darkest Dungeon. It was a very cool, atmospheric, and challenging game that shaped our vision. Several years later, we encountered Slay the Spire, and we realized that we had to create our own gaming world. Thus, the fantasy world of Everwayne, hand-drawn by our artists, was born.
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slbLN1gPQVI Briefly about the game: The world of Everwayne is withering under the Tyrant's grip. His poisonous grasp is destroying the once beautiful world. However, hope is not yet lost, as there are heroes ready to vanquish evil and restore former prosperity to the world!
Our goal is to create something that the community will continue to uncover for a long time. Something full of secrets. And we sincerely hope that the cozy atmosphere of the game, combined with the art style and non-linear storyline, will find its audience of explorers.
We would be incredibly happy if our game ends up on your wishlist. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2498600/Everwayne/ Our Twitter page is always open to guests. https://x.com/EverwayneGame

2024.05.19 16:38 ThrowRA_sunnilunni My 28M brother 26M randomly said he's trans. I want him to get help. What should I do?

So my brother has always been a guys guy. He was always into very masculine hobbies like cars, video games, guns, martial arts.
When we were little you couldn't get him out of a go-kart, he played hockey for 8 years and got in so many fights, when he was a teen he went to play air soft and paintball all the time, went mountain biking.
Even today his main hobbies are brazilian jiu jitsu and downhill mountain biking. He's 6'1 180 lbs, he's got a buzz cut and a beard... And the other day he just tells me he's really sick of this shit and that he's actually trans. I thought he was joking because he didn't say it super seriously (he's never serious), but he just said "hey, man just letting you know, don't say I didn't tell you". I asked him again if he was serious and he said dead ass.
How do I deal with this and get him the right help to see what's going on with him? I do remember him joking about how he would prefer to be a girl in the first grade, but he never mentioned it again. Maybe he needed help sooner?
TLDR my brother randomly said he was trans and it makes no sense. What should I do?

2024.05.19 16:38 Top-Let-1199 Is my mother a narcissistic?

Sorry ,English is not my first language. So for context , me (16F) and my mother we don't have the bests of relationship and since I've hit puberty, I've come to notice that my mother treats me differently than my brothers (22M and 25M ). She always blames me for her wrong decision, for every fight in our household. She always says that I'll never be like her (not that I want to be) , she always says that my brothers are her favourite because they do everything for her which is not true. In the priority list of my mother my brothers come first and I'm the last which is fine and I'm used to it but when i see the blatant favouritism i just can't help but call her out on it and she always denies it . I remember when i was in 4th grade and was developing, she told me to put hot tortilla's on my chest so my breast would flatten down (idk if it was true or not but it was ridiculous to say the least) and when i got my period she wasn't home at that time and i was 11 so when she came back she noticed red stains on my skirt and handed me a pad without any explanation and when i asked her what it is she said " Haven't you seen the ad" . She never told me about womenhood or femminity instead she was repulsed by it even though she is a woman too. She would warn me not to touch her when i was on my period and when I'd get seriously bad cramps she'd say "it happens" but not when it's her's. She used to disappear for month's saying she didn't wanted to live with us but when she came back all the sadness would also come back . She thinks everyone is talking about her behind her back and she blames me for it and goes on to give me a silent treatment which only she can break ( like when she FEELS like talking) . She makes me spy on my brother to listen if and what is he talking about her and report back to her and that kinda creates issues with me and my oldest brother. She always forcefully includes me in her n my father's fights and when i say something she goes on to blame me for her fights and everything she's ever done . She regularly makes vile comments about my body ( I'm kinda chubby) and proceeds to compare me to herself. She kinda thinks that I'm fighting for my father's affection with her so she humiliates me in front of my father because it's 'Funny'. Her moods changes every second, she screams at me whenever she wants , she'll say anything she wants to and i can't say anything or the fight would escalate. I'm so tired TBH and i have thoughts of killing myself just to get out of this house. She's never had a professional diagnosis so I'm not sure what is wrong with her . Is she really a narcissistic?

So I'm a seasoned developer in some other areas, but I'm writing my first ever serious web app and am wondering one thing about tests, wondering what the practice is or should be.
I have a web api controller and a repository that is called by that controller. I have unit tests for that repository, covering its functionalities, one of which is throwing an exception when you attempt to update an item that does not exist.
Then I have a controller handling an http put request, which doesn't do much, just minor validation and then off you go to the repository. If you request to update a non-existing item, said repository's exception will be caught in middleware and a 404 http status code will be returned.
Given I'm already testing the functionality of the exception being thrown from the repository for the scenario mentioned, should I write integration tests for the controller for the same scenario?
If I do, I'm testing the repository twice. If I change it to throw a different kind of exception, I'll get two test failures.
If I don't, say if I change the implementation of that repository interface to a different database and I forget to throw the exception, it will go undetected.
I guess implementing the test on the controller level is favorable, but it feels like I'm repeating the exact same test-case I have for my repository. I actually did implement it, straight up copy-pasting the setup method, which is why it felt wrong.
What's your take on this?

2024.05.19 16:36 YorkieCheese My ex-employer (McMaster-Carr) is recruiting for consultants while fluffing job descriptions and manipulating Glassdoor Reviews. Be vigilante. Chicago, Cleveland, New Jersey, Los Angeles, Atlanta.

I'm sure most of Chicago/Booth/Kellogg have heard of this company by now, but they also do recruit for their other branches hence I wanted to make a Reddit post.
Quick Intro: McMaster-Carr is the Amazon of Industrial Supplies. They ship to the US Miltary, manufacturers, engineers, technicians, etc... Their customers are the engineers but the bills are paid by the Finance Dept hence as long as McM do a consistent good job delivering to the engineers, they can charge exorbitant amount (e.g $30 screw and $50 shipping; real example.)This is how they can pay entry managements with 0yoe $170k (bonus included, deferred saving excluded) and middle managers (3-10YOE) up to $300k.
Path: Management Trainee (0-18m depending on your background/initial performance). Supervisor (no pay raise as MT are expected to become Sup eventually; can be skipped if you have pre-MBA exp and did well in your initial performance.) ManageSeniorM (3-5yoe/5-8yoe; most people languished here until they decided to go all in or all out with McMaster.) After this come Regional ManageDirectoVP. You can leave at M/SM and might still be able to transition to a new careeindustry afterward. Otherwise, it's a tough sale. Even before the mid-2023 general market downturn, I knew Regional/Directors who took 1+ year just to switch to another industrial/industrial job. Not even an industry switch.
Their Targets: In the past, 95%+ of management came from straight out of Ivy/Top Liberal Arts undergrad. This breeds an incredibly toxic environment since many of them are not mature/don't have leadership experience (the cream of the crop don't consider McMaster) and it's a case of the blinds leading the blinds. McM had a purge of toxic leaders back in mid-2010s but this problem returned. Since then, they have tried to recruit a few more consultants rather than depending solely on fresh grads. This recruiting effort has and continued to go miserably. Despite mass reach-out effort every single year, they only got some ex-B4 (1 Parthenon but the rest is regular B4), but they couldn't get anyone from T2 or MBB.
Pro:
• Their pay. McM has a 2.9 Glassdoor rating despite having a 4.6 rating in Compensation and Benefits. Pay include:
 •Base (0yoe: ~115k; ~$10k for each add year; ~$160k for Manager) •Profit Sharing (average 50%+ of base; lowest was ~33% in 2008 & 45% in 2020; 2022 was ~50%+ and 2023 was ~60%) •Deferred Saving (25% of Base&PS. Vest schedule 0%/20%/40%/60%/80%/100% over 6 years.)
• Their Education tuition policy: After the first 3 months, You can take any part-time program (e.g PT-MBA, PT-MS, PT-MA) or Certificate completely free, doesn’t have to be work-related, and no string attached. You can literally leave after they paid for your tuition and can still finish your course.
Cons: Glassdoor Reviews:
• There’s another purge/headcount reduction going on right now. A tidbit is that management above your level can see the performance review of everyone below them. This contributes to how much drama, backstabbing, and rumors float internally. Recently, an ex-Trainee even wrote a long post calling out his spineless manager and backstabbing coworkers in a GroupMe with 100+ members of management. The manager left soon after. The ex-MT even told McMaster to blacklist his undergrad for recruiting. Absolute legend.
• The operations and tech stack are very constrained and not replicable. The company uses 80s IBM Tech for CRM/ERP so unless you’re working on a Website-related project (which you can sometimes use Python/SQL), you will be writing outdated queries to pull data. McM also doesn’t use Powerpoint so you will have to learn Adobe Indesign. The company’s warehouses themselves have a ton of makeshifts and outdated stuff. If you get a warehouse assignment, you will be putting out fires arose from issues not addressed by the original warehouse design. If you think you will be value-add to a company like Amazon after your McMaster’s experience, you are wrong. Amazon warehouses are built in the early/mid 2010s and have about 30 years of new automation/technology integrated to them. McM is still tinkering with their first automated warehouse. Experience putting out fixed/nonexistent issues is worthless.
• This company hire fake review writers. You will notice the positive reviews are all generic and one line whereas the negative reviews (from both Managements and ICs) are all super long and super informative. You will also notice that there’s no longer a “Most Helpful” sort on Glassdoor. This is because all the negative reviews get liked so much. Now it’s just “Most Popular” which is just fake reviews with 0 like/dislike.
• Relationships between Management and Individual Contributors are more fraught than ever. The situation has always been incredibly tense because ICs were viewed with incredible disdain by Management (most of whom are rich Ivy/Top School graduates) but has only gotten worse with automation and market uncertainty.
• Management’s official policy is to never promote Individual Contributors. A fresh grad (0YOE) can instantly become a supervisor but somehow an IC needed 8+ years of consistent excellent performance to be considered. Management can become Manager in as little as 2yoe out of Undergrad, whereas IC -> Manager is so rare I can count the Chicago Branch on two hands. And no, it’s not because ICs are not qualified/hardworking. Just imagine how hard it is to work at Amazon-pace for EIGHT YEARS just to be equal to a college brown-nose.
• Management’s unofficial policy is to avoid eye contact or saying hello to ICs unless the ICs initiated it. ICs were afraid to take more than one food/souvenir item during an open house event even though we had so much leftover. A manager even complained that other managers were making fun of ICs for work-place injuries (think Amazon warehouse-like injuries such as overexertion, nerve damage, wrist/knees/back issues.) Absolutely devoid of humanity.
• The company had been automating part of the Atlanta and Chicago warehouses. Managements assigned to be tour guides of these automated warehouses were told to lie say that no IC headcount reduction will occur. Obviously, there were a rise in suspicious performance evaluation after these were built. Also, I was one of the tour guides and were asked by multiple ICs where the observation cameras will be in the ceiling. The fact that multiple raised this seemingly-joking-yet-alarming question tells you just how much Management has trained ICs to become paranoid over time. If you’re a new-hire consultant and feels related to this meme, just know you will be holding the mop to clean up and not the lightsaber.

2024.05.19 16:36 hexmillenial Psy 108

So I am in my first psych class of my psych major and I have had no real issues with any classes so far, but this professor in my psych class is either a total perfectionist or I need to just quit school. For our first discussion post, they gave me a B- because I did not add a reference. The post was asking for our opinion and it did not say we had to include any references. My post was one of the longest of all of the posts for our first week and I spent an unnecessarily long amount of time on it and made sure I added personal information to try to make the discussion more interesting. Like. What else do I have to do? I just feel like this prof is going to be a total drag when grading my assignments and I’m feeling really defeated. Anyone have any advice?

2024.05.19 16:34 jagerben47 Need a phone that will work for both personal use and business.

Hi all. My current phone (Moto One 5G UW Ace) is almost paid off and I'm in need of an upgrade. I've recently changed jobs and this is the first time I've had to use my personal phone for business, so I need one with some good specs. I'm hoping you guys can help me find a good android that meets my needs below, but if an iPhone is what I need then tell me.
I've been an android follow ever since I was able to recognize Apples shady business practices, but I'll bite the bullet if I need to.
My needs:
Large memory capacity - for personal use, I use large apps like PoGo and stuff like that, but for work I need a lot of storage space for pictures (I'm an engineer and need to collect a lot of pictures at client sites). And I believe memory is what governs agile app functionality (apps opening and switching quickly). I also currently use a micro SD card for all my pictures, so it'd be nice if the new phone had that capability so I can take the SD out and put it in the new one.
Good and FAST camera quality - as mentioned above, I take a lot of pictures for my job. I need a camera that takes clear pictures in a variety of lights while also being FAST. My current camera isn't bad, but it locks up my phone whenever I try to use it. I had an iPhone for work once and switching between the camera and other apps was so quick and non-intrusive and I'd like to get that again.
Battery life - The longer, the better. I've only ever used Motorolas in the past (I currently have a Moto One 5G UW Ace) because of their battery life, but nowadays it doesn't seem line Motos are heads-and-shoulders above anyone else in this regard.
Connectivity - My phone does not play nicely with my wife's iPhone. Pictures we send to each other turn out poor and sometimes there's a delay in receiving messages.
My wants:
Fingerprint scanner - I'm not a fan of the face-based unlocking, but I do love the quick opening of a fingerprint scanner.
Car connectivity - My current phone is garbage at connecting to my car via Android Auto. It takes way too long and I feel is actually kind of a safety hazard because of the delayed response times.
Separate profiles? - I think this is more of a software thing, but I'm asking just in case there's a company that really good for this: Since I use this for both work and play, I'd like to keep them as separate as possible. It'd be nice if I had two different instances of the OS running at the same time (like having different desktops running off the same machine) so that files and apps I have for my personal use can't bleed over into my work environment.
Large size - I don't think this will be a problem because of how the market works, but the larger the screen, be happier I will be. Not super critical though.
Peripherals - I'm looking into a smart-watch in the future, so something that plays well natively with my phone would be nice. USB-C port for hooking into things. Wireless charging would be cool, but it's not super critical.
Country of origin - I know Chinese companies have been making waves recently, but I'd prefer to stay away from devices affiliated with geopolitical rivals of the county in which I reside (USA). I don't really care THAT much, but I feel like it may save some headache in the future.
My constraints:
Carrier - My carrier is Verizon and I'm still squatting on my parents' account (yay millennials) so this would be purely a hardware upgrade. No new lines, no changing of plans. I know good phones probably run around or above $1000 now but the more affordable I can be with Verizon, the better.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. And again, if the answer is an iPhone, just rip the bandaide off so I can make piece with myself before making my wife happy.

2024.05.19 16:30 Street-Calendar-6824 I’m gonna get a B in ap calc ab

I’ve now finished almost all my ap exams except for ap lang makeup. But now that it is pretty much over, I’m back to thinking about grades and I’ve now realized I’m going to get a semester B in calc ab. In order to get an A I would need to take an optional calc exam and get a 20/20, and then get a 48/48 on the project we have. Then I would need to ask for a .1 bump up. So I really don’t think it is possible. I just feel rlly disappointed because I got a B first semester too and I did my best given that I had 6 other APs.

2024.05.19 16:28 Mediocre_Leopard_708 The unis here ! Please help me out

This might have been asked a lot of times before but I recently shifted to dubai. My brother and my dad expanded their business so I eventually had to come here as well. I just completed my grade 12th from India and scored a 94%. I was looking at the dubai unis here since I’m pretty new to the city . According to Reddit all the universities here suck. And the student life is extremely bad ? Is this true ? Can some of yall give me first hand experiences .
I am planning to mostly do a psychology degree and then for my masters I’ll go abroad and either do an mba or continue with a msc in psychology.
Then I got to know something about how half of the unis here aren’t “ moe “ approved and idrk what that is? Does that mean that if I study in a uk based college here I won’t be accepted into top us colleges in the USA? Or what exactly does a ministry of education approved college mean and how is that beneficial?? And is only a kdhda approved college alright??
For psychology I was mostly looking at harriot watt, university of dubai, curtin university or rak universities like the west London, bsu or American university of rak . how are they?? Or any good unis for psychology?
My only two options atleast for undergrad are either go back to India or study in the uae and tbvh the Reddit posts scared the shit outta me😭

2024.05.19 16:24 S_K_25 stealing idea and also reviewing all professors i’ve had

stealing u/epiccabbage123 idea, feel free to ask any questions!!
FALL 2020
Adam Kane- WR120, first year writing, nonsense fiction. very fun class honestly with a lot of interesting discussions, and super interesting and thought provoking material with very interesting perspectives. recommend
Laura Brusetti- LI111, first sem italian, fun professor but tbh i was just in the class for lang requirement, but made learning the language easy and didn’t put a ton of pressure. recommend
Dan Dill- CH101, gen chem 1, i mean everyone knows dill what do i say, took it online which made it a lil easier tbh but i guess that may depend who you talk to. talks really slow and i felt like the book explained concepts better than he did
Mark Howe- NE101, intro to neuroscience, this class moves pretty fast and is very content packed, also took it online. i really enjoyed this class since i was super interested, but could be tough if you’re not. don’t think he teaches this class anymore tho (take it with gobrogge in the summer if he still does that!)
SPRING 2021
Walter Hopp- PH248, existentialism, idk this is where i found out academic philosophy wasnt for me, but jf you’re interested in the subject you’d probably like it, remember doing some kant and nietzche but i stopped reading the material halfway through the class tbh
Rita Cote- LI112 (2nd sem italian), LI211 (3rd sem), more difficult professor people say but tbh if you pay attention to the questions she asks they are the same she puts on oral exams and paper tests so just write them down in class and prepare an answer (if she hasn’t changed how she teaches)
Lucia Pastorino- NE102, Intro to cell and molecular bio, really great professor but i didn’t get to take her courses outside of this one and it was online, so i didn’t get to know her that well. class was great tho and she is a great lecturer, neuro department is great here. recommend
Binyomin Abrams- CH102, gen chem 2, explained things better than dill but still found the best help was reading the textbook, honestly just taught myself that one
Kyle Gobrogge- NE102 Lab, NE203 Lab (Principles of Neuro), NE456, the absolute goat, i love him to death. probably my favorite professor i’ve had and a huge part of what makes the neuro department great. truly cares about all his students and is willing to talk about anything and everything. will push you to reach your potential and it feels like he truly believes in you. he will open doors for you if you really want, and you can get anywhere you want if you want to work for it, he will offer paths to publish papers, undertake whatever experiment you can come up with that he has the facilities to support. they run a lab as well called the gobrogge teaching lab where he gave me access to whatever resources he could to come up with experiments and do whatever i wanted with them. very low pressure on the research as well, it truly felt like a perfect learning experience and through him i was able to start learning how to actually undertake research. take their sex and aggression class, it’s something everyone should be exposed to at some level and gives you an opportunity to talk about topics on human sexuality, neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, sociology, anything and everything freely and openly. i could go on for a while about them. highly highly recommend take any classes they’re teaching
FALL 2021
Cote, 3rd sem Italian, above
Rebecca Kinraide- WR152, Medical debates, seemed like a class but i wasn’t super engaged tbh. she was super nice though from what i remember and i don’t have any bad things to say about her
Jeff Gavornik- NE203, principles of neuro lecture, moves quick but i found it interesting, explains basic functions of the brain and builds a good foundation for future classes, he specialized in the electrical side of things so the class was slightly heavier in that aspect. felt like he explained things well though, didn’t go to office hours much so i don’t know him very well
huge shoutout to Caroline Dugan, think she is currently teaching NE203 lab which was easily my favorite lab class at BU. got to design our own experiment on fruit flies and this class has only improved since. you get access to some really powerful tools that you can do some really interesting things with. caroline was a LA when i took the class and she was always a great help, great at explaining concepts from lecture or lab and i highly recommend.
also huge shoutout to John Tullai, i didn’t have the pleasure of taking one of his classes directly since i did 203 lab under gobrogge, but every interaction I’ve had with tullai all the way through graduation has been great. another huge part of what makes the neuro department great, great person and great teacher. highly recommend.
Tracy Dunne- PS101, intro to psych, she was good but i wasn’t always super engaged and honestly wish i did a different minor. great professor though with interesting lectures and funny stories, i’d recommend if you are looking at this class
SPRING 2022
Zeynep Demiragli- PY105, physics 1, honestly felt like she went over some concepts a little too quick and found reading textbook to be really helpful to supplement, but was super nice and seemed to care about her students a lot.
David Somers- NE202, Intro to Cognitive neuro, this class was also interesting and he brought up a lot of interesting experiments, definitely have to study for this one. his lectures were engaging enough imo but not standout. recommend
Arash Yazdanbakhsh- NE212 (Intro to Matlab), NE204 (Intro to Computational Neuroscience), both classes are matlab, expects his students to do well and put in effort but is also more than willing to explain things to the most minute detail and repeat whenever you’re confused. go to office hours and ask questions, exams are open note and open internet as well so take notes and use them. his lecturing style is a bit different than most, instead of directly telling you information he tries to lead you there with questions and student input. he wants you to try to make the steps that people discovering these things did and think about everything is presented, he will give you all the information you need. recommend
FALL 2022
Paul Trunfio- PY106, physics 2, loved this man honestly, he wants his students to do well and will explain and answer any questions you have. gave great lectures and very accessible but also felt textbook material/assigned work pretty helpful. recommend
Brett DiBenedictis- NE333, drugs and behavior, really interesting class and he is a great lecturer, but the professors for this class change all the time. he gives a lot of detail and a very wide perspective outside of just how drugs work, but also touches on how they’ve impacted society. recommend if you get the chance
Steve Ramirez- NE337, Memory Systems, this man is incredible and i wish i got to interact with him more. leads a really interesting lab as well doing sick memory research. learned a ton in this class about how human memory works, things that can apply outside of just neuro knowledge but you can apply to your life. engaging lectures, funny professor with great stories and is great at explaining concepts. highly recommend.
Alice Cronin-Golomb- NE338, neuropsychology, learned some really interesting information in this class and she brought in some interesting guest lecturers. great lecturer herself, can expect a lot but is very informative. recommend.
SPRING 2023
Andrey Vyshedskiy, MET BI366, Neurobiology of Consciousness and Imagination, this guy is a genius, like seriously. go read his book, titled on the origin of the human mind, especially if you are interested in neuro and human evolution. he proposes a super interesting theory on what makes humans unique and is doing some really interesting research trying to examine his theory. unfortunately idk if you can get into this class anhmore unless you are in MET, and i took this class with 4 other people. super super interesting though and really pushed my understanding of the brain but also began to build a much more holistic overview of how the cortex works and how humans can do what we do. highly highly recommend and seriously read his book if you’re interested in this kind of thing.
Rachel Denison- PS222, perception, she seemed like a super sweet woman but i didn’t enjoy the class much, felt very surface level and memorization based honestly and i wasn’t engaged. also didn’t let students leave the classroom after finishing midterm/final until the whole allotted time was up even if you finished early so idk what that was about?
Michael Lyons- PS371, psychopathology, again i wish i did a different minor but old psych white guy vibes, seemed fine enough but lectures weren’t very engaging and felt like they consisted of either some random story that was only slightly related or reading off entries in the DSM
Stephen Prothero- RN106, Death and Immortality, this was the last class that he taught but i would recommend if i could. didn’t read much of the material but lectures were interesting and discussion based, even with a large class. impressed how they managed that tbh. recommend this class for more than just hub recs even tho we all know that’s what you’re taking it for
FALL 2023
Kyle Gobrogge, NE456, above
Kevin Barents/Jeremy Yudkin MH408/AM336, bob dylan: music and words, love these guys, lowkey penn and teller vibes but very interesting professors. class is super fun, listen to bob dylan and discuss his music, influence, life, ideas, whatever. recommend
Meg Younger- NE520, Sensory Neurobiology, great class and great professor. not only do you get to look at the groundbreaking discoveries in sensory neurobio, she teaches you how to read and digest scientific articles and prepares you to move into a lab. runs her discussion sections like a lab would run a journal club which i found super helpful. also will always engage with student feedback and is willing to challenge students if she doesn’t feel like we are putting in enough effort. really enjoyed her class and teaching style, this was a smaller class that allowed for open discussion and lots of perspectives. she also runs a really interesting mosquito lab investigating olfaction, so she has some really interesting insights there. highly highly recommend.
Kevin Gold, DS110, intro to Data Science with Python, good professor and chill dude, didn’t go to office hours so i didn’t know him much. cool class tho, helpful information to know and a good beginyning exposition to python and data science. recommend.
SPRING 2024
Arash Yazdanbakhsh, NE204, above
Leonidas Kontothanasis, DS210, Programming for Data Science, difficult and demanding class but good professor, gives some interesting stories in office hours and fun to talk to. good lectures but definitely need to do some reading outside of lecture as well. his class began to spark my interest in programming. recommend.
Tanima Chatterjee- DS120, Foundations of Data Science, seemed like a great professor but honestly i didn’t attend lecture much, seemed super nice from her recordings and didn’t actually require lecture attendance, gave really detailed lecture notes that were super easy to teach myself from. class itself was just basic topics in probability, proofs and logic, calculus, and linear algebra, i didn’t find it too difficult. she’s good at explaining concepts and if i didn’t take this class as a second semester senior i probably would have been more engaged. recommend.

Failed First attempt - seeking advice
So unfortunately I've failed my first attempt. Did horrible on domain 1 for some reason lol.
About me I have no experience (2 months IT audit internship + ~1 years of general IT help desk ). Bachelor in a non technical degree with a minor in CS.
My approach when studying 1. Watched doshi udemy 2. Review Manual - reading through every topic doshi covered and skim through the ones he didn't. 3. Did the QAE after I learn the material. First round was (70%/73%/80%/73%/66%). Reviewed what I got wrong and review the topics again with both review manual and some outside sources/chatgpt. Created flash cards and memorize certain topics (e.g. what is ssh/symmetric encryption/PKI/firewalls - and what are their risks) 4. First mock (70%/70%/80%/80%/85%). Review mock and created more flash cards and weaker topics. I tried to understand what the question is asking beyond the concept. 5. Second mock (85%/85%/90%/75%/85%). At this point I thought I was somewhat prepared and just reviewed my flash cards and rewatched some of the udemy video. Reset QAE and did a couple. Didn't go through entire thing again because feels like I just "know" the answer from previous attempt.
Planning to reattempt sometime mid July. Any advice/criticism is welcomed. The 2024 change seems to me in my favor solely in terms of % of domain 1 and domain 5 decreasing but I'll probably just stick with the 2019 version if possible.
