2024.05.19 08:19 Glitch109 [Crossover Worldbuilding Idea] What if the MCU, DCEU, MonsterVerse, Resident Evil (Capcom Games), Avatar: The Last Airbender, Netflix's The Dragon Prince, Vivziepop's Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss, and Live Action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are set in the same universe?

Inspired by MichaeltheSpikester's idea of a shared world, decided to add my variation of it. But with extra media that I think would fit well with this shared world.
-Several dimensions that were connected to Earth-199999 are not only the Astral, Dark, Mirror, K'un-Lun, Ta Lo, Duat, etc. but also consisted of Chronobowl (DCEU), Mount Olympus (DCEU), Axis Mundi (MonsterVerse), 4 Nations (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Spirit World (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Xadia (Netflix's The Dragon Prince), Heaven & Hell (Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss), and the Kraang Dimension (TMNT).
-The Titan's origins originated from the Celestial Tiamut from the Earth's core with the cosmic energy mutating small creatures into giant monsters. It is revealed that every planet in the universe not only has its celestials but also has its own set of Titans that play a key role in the planet's ecosystem. King Ghidorah is revealed to be one of the last few members of his species who survived his planet's Emergence and the reason why he and his kind terraform worlds is to rebuild the home they lost.
-Heaven and the Kraang played a role in the development of the Human race where it is revealed that Humans have various animal DNA, thus having the dormant gene that ties them to their animal ancestor.
-Lilith would be considered the "First Scarlet Witch".
-Due to Heaven's influence, their magic created the Gods and Goddesses in the universe. Adam would eventually create the Council of Godheads, where he is good friends with Zeus from Thor: Love and Thunder (aka Jupiter, the Roman counterpart of Zeus).
-The celestial's cosmic energy not only created Hollow Earth but also created pockets from the Earth's surface that created portals that allowed access to Hollow Earth from the surface.
-Asgardians, ancient Wakanda, Eternals, and Titans banding together with humanity, ancient Atlantis, ancient Green Lanterns, Olympians, and Themsycira in the fight against Darkseid, Steppenwolf, and their forces in ancient history.
-It is revealed that Titans, such as Sehkmet, Na Kika, and an unnamed Thunderbird Titan are responsible for Bashenga's, Talokanil's, and Chafa's origins and abilities instead of the Gods and Goddesses from Thor: Love and Thunder.
-The Titans and Startouch Elves would be labeled as "low-level" gods by the Council of Godheads.
-Atlantis, Asgard, Themyscira, Heaven, and Olympus (When the Greek Gods were still around) were aware of the existence of Titans and the role they play in the Earth's ecosystem. Similar to Asgardians, Titans were responsible for many legends and myths regarding mythical creatures and gods. The relationship between them and benevolent titans would be at best mutual notably towards those like Godzilla and Mothra but otherwise would be at odds with destroyer titans like Rodan and Scylla.
-The Eternals are aware of the Titans as well. Ikaris proposed killing them since they would be affecting the Earth's population and preventing the Emergence from progressing. However, Ajak talked him out of it as they observed Godzilla's species preserving the balance of nature, keeping the population steadying, keeping the other Titans at bay, and hunting/killing giant Deviants as well.
-The Eternals once met with Mothra, who Sersi and Sprite formed a close bond with.
-The animalistic Egyptian Gods and Goddesses (Khonshu, Anubis, Ammit, Tawaret, Horus, etc.) were once human-looking Gods/Goddesses before being exposed to the Kraang's Ooze, which mutated them into more animalistic creatures.
-Godzilla has a mixed relationship with the Eternals. While he approves them for keeping the Earth safe, he doesn't trust them due to their "unnatural" nature due to being from space, which is the same with King Ghidorah.
-Prior to his arrival on earth. King Ghidorah had a fearful reputation across the cosmos by civilizations, similar to that of Darkseid and Thanos.
-Both Thor and Rodan once fought each other in the past when Rodan at some point appeared in Scandinavia and terrorized the people, which prompted the Thunder God to engage. It was a long, withdrawn, and lengthy battle that eventually ended with Thor finally driving Rodan off. Like many legends and myths, this fight inspired one of those about Thor fighting a "Great Bird of Fire".
-Shazam was the first Sorcerer Supreme and taught the Ancient One magic.
-Wonder Woman and the original Shazam took part in imprisoning Ammit alongside the other Egyptian Gods and Goddesses.
-The radiation of Hollow Earth caused certain viruses and organisms to become more hostile when infecting their host while granting them various abilities. Examples include the T-Virus and the E-Series mold.
-Both Asgard and Mount Olympus are aware of Aaravos and his past crimes.
-The Ancient One visited both Xadia and the 4 nations once to learn more about both world's magic. The Ancient One also helped in imprisoning Aaravos.
-While Xadia is aware of dark magic, they are unaware of the Dark Dimension and Dormammu.
-King Ghidorah was without a doubt probably the only being that Darkseid and Thanos had ever developed a grudging respect. Both warlords are aware of King Ghidorah due to being just as feared by civilizations across the cosmos as they are. Despite classing Titans as "low-level" gods, the Council of Godheads also feared King Ghidorah due to his destructive nature.
-The Necrosword is made of the same metallic material used by the Exorcist Angels during their exterminations.
-Wonder Woman's presence in World War I inspired Johann Schmidt (aka Red Skull) to pursue mythology in hopes of creating weaponry for HYDRA.
-Captain America and Wonder Woman met during World War II when Steve was doing his USO Show.
-SHIELD is aware of Monarch and STAR Labs and has often collaborated with each other in the past.
-Packard is a relative of Nick Fury.
-Asgard and Krypton having had a history with one another and the former having tried to warn the latter of their inevitable doom, but were dismissed.
-Prior to Krypton's destruction. Zod and his soldiers had a run-in with Yondu and the Ravagers.
-Both SHIELD and Nick Fury were not only aware of the Titan's existence but also aware of Superman's arrival on Earth and kept close tabs on him since he was a child.
-Both Superman and Chris Redfield were Captain America fans when younger.
-After the T-Virus Incident in Raccoon City, SHIELD and Monarch helped with the clean-up.
-Bruce Wayne, William Stenz, Amanda Waller, and Chris Redfield were all targets of Project Insight.
-Alongside SHIELD, STAR Labs, B.S.A.A., and Monarch were all infiltrated by HYDRA Agents who sought their resources. They stole various technological weapons created by the Motherbox, samples of the T-Virus, and stole Titan DNA to create Titan clones.
-After the Turtles made their debut, SHIELD and Monarch kept close eye on them based on their mutation.
-After the Civil War, Amanda Waller proposed Task Force X to the government, in which Theaddeus Ross was among those who approved it while William Stenz opposed it. Abomination and Baron Zemo were among the possible candidates for Task Force X.
-Task Force X and Monarch weren't affected by the Sokovia Accords due to their connections with the government.
-After the Baker House Incident, SHIELD and Monarch not only helped clean up the situation but also got clues on the E-Series's origin. Not trusting the B.S.A.A. or Blue Umbrella, they gave the info to Chris, which led to his isolation from both organizations.
-Talokan would be considered one of the Kingdoms of Atlantis. Ocean Master would later try to recruit Namor, but decides not to as he was warned by the other rulers that Namor is more dangerous than Ocean Master himself.
-Karathen is revealed to be one of the lost Titans of Earth.
-Wakanda is aware of the existence of Atlantis but their ancestors have made a treaty with each other in not interfering. After the events of Aquaman, both T'Challa and Arthur meet in secret to discuss how to unite their kingdoms together and reveal their secret to the world. While Arthur respects T'Challa, he wants to keep Atlantis a secret until the time is right.
-Katolis would be aware of various magical humans such as Original Shazam and the Ancient One.
-Clark Kent/Superman, Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, Billy Batson/Shazam, and Mothra are beings capable of lifting Mjolnir.
-At the Senate hearing, alongside Serizawa, Nick Fury and Calvin Swanwick (Martian Manhunter) are among those who defended the Titans while Thaddeus Ross and Amanda Waller voiced against them.
-After the Titans were released, several Titans, such as Titanus Sehkmet, Behemoth, and Mokele-Mbembe all resided near Wakanda and all bonded with T'Challa/Black Panther while Titans such as Titanus Na Kika, Tiamat, and Amhuluk all resided near Talokan and bond with Namor.
-By the end of Infinity War and during the events of Endgame. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Lois Lane, Martian Manhunter, Joker, Lex Luthor, Black Mask, Victor Zsasz, Black Canary, Renee Montoya, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, Bruce the Hyena, Bloodsport, Harley Quinn, Rick Flagg, King Shark, Ratcatcher 2 and Sebastian, Polka-Dot Man, Captain Boomerang, Savant, Javelin, Blackguard, Mongal, T.D.K., Weasel, Thinker, Billy Batson/Shazam, Billy's foster parents and siblings, Amanda Waller, Emilia Harcourt, John Economos, Adebayo Waller, Clemson Murn/Ik Nobe Llok, Goff/Sophie Song/Eek Stack Ik Ik, Casper Locke, Larry Fitzgibbon, James Gordon, Atlanna, Mera, Arthur Jr., Starro, Peacemaker, White Dragon, Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Cyclone, Atom Smasher, Adrianna Tomaz, Karim, Amon Tomaz, Ishmael GregoSabbac, Blue Beetle and the Reyes family, Victoria and Jenny Kord, Carapax, Madison Russell, Mark Russell, Illene Chen, Houston Brooks, Sam Coleman, Nathan Lind, Illene Andrews, Jia, Josh Valentine, Bernie Hayes, Travis Beasley/Trapper, Walter and Maia Simmons, Ren Serizawa, Alan Jonah, Godzilla, Kong, half of the known titans, Leon Kennedy, Chris Redfield, Claire Redfield, Ethan Winters, Mia Winters, Zoe Baker, Joe Baker, Mother Miranda, Karl Heisenberg, Lady Dimitrescu, Salvatore Moreau, Donna Beneviento, The Duke, Chris's Team, the Turtles, and Baxter Stockman would be amongst the survivors of The Blip.
-Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman, Perry White, Martha Kent, Stephen Shin, Deadshot, Deathstroke, Katana, Killer Croc, Ling Chen, Rick Stanton, Diane Foster, Jackson Barnes, Anthony Martinez, Lauren Griffin, Rodan, other half of the known titans, Jill Valentine, Ada Wong, Sensei Splinter, Bebop, and Rocksteady were amongst the victims of The Blip.
-Similar to Scott Lang, Black Adam, Mothra, Khaji-Da, and the inhabitants of the 4 nations, Xadia, Heaven, and Hell would not be affected by the Blip.
-The only beings that sensed the Blip were the Avatar (Aang), The Archdragons of Xadia (Zubeia, Rex Igneous, Domina Profundis, and Sol Regem), the Seraphim (Sera and Emily), the Goetian Hierarchy (Stolas and Octavia), and the 7 Deadly Sins (Lucifer Morningstar, Asmodeus, Satan, Mammon, Beelzebub, Leviathan, and Belphegor).
-The victims of the Blip weren't sent to Heaven or Hell, they were stuck in Limbo.
-During the post-Blip, due to Thanos' actions, Godzilla had a hard time in trying to keep balance of the Earth with half of the remaining titans running loose. Due to the world powers struggling, they helped fund Apex Cybernetics to stabilize their economy as well as unknowingly helping Walter process with his Mechagodzilla experiment.
-Because of Thanos, the Corto Maltese government took advantage of this by continuing their experiments with Project Starfish and the Intergang were able to operate and have full control over Kahndaq. Many crime organizations in Gotham have either been dismantled due to the disappearance of the leaders or have been absorbed into the Black Mask Crime Organization. Jaime's family and his community go through financial struggles from Kord Industries due to the effects of the Blip.
-Due to less hero activity, the I.M.P.s operated their assassination business.
-Kingpin met with Joker and Black Mask during the Blip where the 2 made mutual agreements in developing a partnership. However, this agreement was broken due to Black Mask's death.
-The Joker was on Ronan's list of targets. However, due to his powerful influence, he was forced to back down.
-Due to the effects of the Blip, the butterflies decided to start their invasion by infecting powerful humans.
-After the Village's destruction, SHIELD aids Chris in a war against B.S.A.A.
-After Doctor Fate's death, Hawkman gives the Helmet of Fate to Kamar-Taj for safekeeping so it doesn't fall into the wrong hands.
-The Avengers and Justice League team up and join the time heist to find the Infinity Stones. With Iron Man's and Batman's technology, they create a black and red infinity gauntlet. Hulk still snaps his fingers which brings every living being back. During the final battle with Thanos, the Justice Society, Black Adam, Godzilla, and the other Titans arrive to join in the fight.
-Victoria Kord and Walter Simmons are among the many people who also had a hatred towards Tony Stark and are joyful about his death.
-After the events of Blue Beetle, Damage Control tried to apprehend him but was forced to back down due to public support.
-Godzilla would grow hostile towards the Hex that Wanda made. Due to being composed of cosmic radiation from the celestial, Godzilla and the other Titans are revealed to be immune to magic due to their massive size as well as not being affected by the Hex's effects. However, once Wanda leaves Westview, Godzilla will leave as well.
-After Endgame, Apex Cybernetics not only seeks to eliminate Titans but also superpowered individuals as well. After the events of GvK, Damage Control cleaned up the damage and acquired their resources.
-Among the deceased that would be in Heaven based on Adam's rule: "Act selfless, Don't Steal, and Stick it to the man" would be Tony Stark/Iron Man, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Peggy Carter, Ancient One, Ben Parker, May Parker, Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver, Phil Coulson, Steve Trevor, Jonathan Kent, Chato Santana/El Diablo, Silas Stone, Rick Flag, Alberto Reyes, José Morales, Ignacio Carapax/OMAC, and Nuidis Vulko.
-Among the deceased that would be in Hell and have the potential to become Overlords are Obadiah Stane/Iron Monger, Ivan Vanko/Whiplash, TrevoThe Mandarin, Alexander Pierce, Dreykov, Xu Wenwu, Quentin Beck/Mysterio, Roman Sionis/Black Mask, Victor Zsaasz, David Kane/Black Manta, and Walter Simmons.
-Wanting to reconnect with his daughter, Mark Russell resigns his position as leader of Monarch and Bruce BanneHulk becomes the next head of Monarch due to his knowledge of Nuclear Physics.
-Both the Great Protector and Dweller-in-Darkness are revealed to be Titans who stumbled upon Ta Lo.
-In Xadia, Viren was resurrected 5 years later rather than 2 (Events of S1-3 take place in 2019-and S4-6 take place in 2024).
-Due to the effects of the Emergence and the Deviants, Godzilla would ally with the Eternals in hunting down and killing the Deviants as well as stopping the Emergence from happening.
-The Benevolent Titans have gained a reputation due to their involvement in keeping the planet safe and healthy.
-Driven by vengeance, Overlord Quentin Beck/Mysterio pays the I.M.P.s to assassinate Peter ParkeSpider-Man. However, this is during the events of No Way Home and when Doctor Strange performs the spell that erases everyone's memory of who Spider-Man is, the I.M.P.s were affected as well and called the mission off due to their amnesia.
-Maya Lopez's/Echo's Powers awaken the ancient Thunderbird Titan that lives near her hometown. She successfully bonds with the Titan.
-Ms. Marvel would not only be a Captain Marvel fan but also a Wonder Woman and Mothra fan as well.
-Riri Williams is a huge fan of both Iron Man and Cyborg which influenced her to create her own enhanced suits. While she has an intense hatred towards Apex Cybernetics after their dirty secrets were exposed, Riri started making concepts on how to build a giant-mech suit to combat hostile Titans.
-Thor recruits Wonder Woman and the Shazam family to help them stop Gorr the God Butcher. They arrive at Omnipotence City where Wonder Woman exposes the Greek Gods being the Roman counterparts with Zeus' real identity revealed to be Jupiter. After the mission, Thor gives Shazam the Thunderbolt.
-Wonder Woman then encounters Marc SpecteMoon Knight where she sees and speaks with Khonshu.
-When Doctor Strange and America Chavez arrive on Earth-838, they meet the Illuminati which not only consists of Captain Carter, Blackbolt, Captain Marvel (Maria Rambeau), and Mister Fantastic but also consists of Christian Bale's Batman and Brandon Routh's Superman.
-Same with Wakanda, the U.N. held a conference on whether the Titans should be contained or killed. Director Fontaine would state that the Titan's radiation helps balance the ecosystem of the planet and propose a solution where they can imprison the Titans and drain this energy they embody to help sustain the ecosystem, thus having them alive, but tortured.
-After Shuri takes the heart-shaped herb and becomes the next Black Panther, she communicates with Sehkmet, Behemoth, and Mokele-Mbembe for the first time. She convinces them to take part in the battle against Namor by battling against Na Kika, Tiamat, and Amhuluk.
-After the battle, Wakanda becomes harmonious with their Titans as they are welcomed in Wakanda and become its protectors alongside Shuri.
-After the alliance with Talokan, Aquaman visits Shuri on the same beach where she meets her nephew, T'Challa II, and warns her about her deal with Namor. Then he introduces his son, Arthur Jr., where he and T'Challa II develop a brotherly bond with each other.
-Due to the Secret Invasion, Superman was affected by the Anti-Alien Act and was forced into hiding.
-During the events of Secret Invasion, the Turtles were forced into hiding due to being confused for Skrulls.
-After the events of The Flash, Doctor Strange and Clea confront him that his actions in altering time created more incursions and recruit him to have them fixed.
-After the events of the Marvels, Monica Rambeau not only meets Binary and Beast but also meets Michael Keaton's Batman and Sasha Calle's Supergirl.
-After the events of Lost Kingdom, Atlantis revealed its existence to the world by joining alliances with the UN and Wakanda.
-Ms. Marvel's Quantum Bands and Shang-Chi's Ten Rings start behaving weirdly as they detect a signal from deep within Hollow Earth, signifying a war cry from ancient Titans known as the Skar King and Shimo.
-As Namor is preparing for the war against the surface by aligning themselves with Wakanda, he commands the Titans he bonded to gain strength. However, one of the Titans, Tiamat, is killed by Godzilla, and Namor is saddened when hearing the news.
-Ms. Marvel's Quantum Bands attracts the attention of Mothra, who believes that Mothra may be the key to bringing back Monica Rambaeu.
-The Avatar's (Aang) awakening was sensed by Doctor Strange.
Overall, this is my take on how this shared world would go. If you have any suggestions on how the shared world would go, feel free to reply!
Special thanks to MichaeltheSpikester for the idea!

2024.05.18 20:54 Yarbles The Official Report of the April RVA Reddit (no we haven't) Bookclub

We met up on a rainy Sunday about a month ago and talked about some books. Our pick this month was Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn, because Assaulty wanted to read a story from an elderly perspective. The characters in this one were not really elderly - they were maybe 60 - but that's an advanced age for an international assassin. It seemed like most people liked it, though it's not everyone's preferred genre. It did resolve itself really well. I thought there were maybe too many main characters stuffed into a shorter book. The_OG_Bert liked the cold hearted professionalism the ladies conducted their business, they really leaned on their experience to their advantage. At one point they compared notes about the best vein to open up for a discrete kill.
Asterion7 brought a bunch of books he had read to pass out including The Wolf Den by Elodie Harper Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention—and How to Think Deeply Again by Johann Hari, and Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel. He also had The Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Stories, which someone had brought to a previous meeting. Maybe that guy will get it back some time. He's finishing and really liked Menewood by Nicola Griffith, the second of the Light of the World series. He and Skyverbyver talked visiting Pompeii and going to museums there that really made The Wolf Den that much more interesting.
Assaulty did the same thing - brought a bunch of books in an attempt to declutter a bit. She shared Still Life with Bones by Alexa Hagerty, No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy, The Moor's Account by Laila Lalami, and The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. These are all exceptionally good books. She spent the most time on Ruth Ozecki's The Book of Form and Emptiness, and it sounded interesting enough for us to add it to our list. She also talked about other Ruth Ozecki books including My Year of Meats.
The Book of Form and Emptiness is about a neurodivergent kid, and Ozecki weaves in pop references and talks about education and mental conditions. But she approaches these conditions not as tragedies, but as new opportunities for perspective. It has themes about hoarding and decluttering, and even has a positive things to say about schizophrenia. She read Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton, Richmond's Unhealed History by Benjamin Campbell, and The Hundred Years' War on Palestine by Rashid Khalidi, saying that the Ottoman Empire part was particularly interesting; and recommends In Memorium by Alice Wynn, about a couple of gay friends who bonded over a shared love of poetry going off the fight World War Uno.
Aimee tends not to pick up a lot of Contemporary Fiction, so she was not likely to get much from Killers of a Certain Age. She talked about The Fig Tree by Goran Vojnović with Olivia Hellewell translating, and a few other books like The Power by Naomi Alderman and is reading the Silo compilation by Hugh Howley. Coconut_sorbet read the three books in the Remembrance of Earth's Past series starting with The Three-Body Problem, and said while they are incredibly heavy and hard to wade through, it's totally worth it. Apparently the fourth book is a fan fiction that someone sent the author and he supported it enough for it to be published.
The_OG_Bert read The House is on Fire by Rachel Beanland, which is about a Richmond Theater kinda near where MCV is now that apparently burned down, and has been working through The Lord of the Rings. He's finding the audiobooks to be a really good way to experiencing the story, but found that the library doesn't always provide the narrator that you like, and that can ruin the flow. Skyver read Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole, a romantasy that leaves you hanging at book 3.
Aurora has mostly been reading award winning books and we talked bout the differences between Hugos and Nebulas. One basic difference is that fans vote for Hugos while professional panels select Nebulas. Besides Killers of a Certain Age, she knocked out The Tower at Stony Wood by Patricia A. McKillip, which she says is YA but really good. Unfortunately the author passed away and Aimee brought this one in last time. She read The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez unique but dense, saying it's possibly a best book she ever read candidate. The themes are more about the oral tradition and how stories are told, and includes first-, second-, and third-person narratives. What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher; The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera , calling it a great Sri Lankan story but a little hard to explain; Translation State by Ann Leckie; The Water Outlaws by S.L. Huang, which is like a classic Chinese novel but with LGBT characters; The Terraformers by Annalee Newitz, saying the book had great ideas, but she didn't love the execution.
She liked Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh, saying it was the best novel she'd read in a while, so that could be literally out of hundreds of books; and Starter Villain by John Scalzi, who is a lot more popular than I thought. Muffin and Kim both liked this one, saying it was a popcorn read, but hilarious, and none of them wanted to ruin the experience by giving away the plot. There was also Shigidi and the Brass Head of Obalufon by Wole Talabi which sounded like a lot of fun, being a heist story about deities working as independent contractors with the main character being minor nightmare god.
She told us about Palimpsest by Catherynne M. Valente which she read for a book club bingo contest, which both Skyver and Asterion loved. It's very weird, about sexually transmitted passes to parts of a city. The book has a lot of sex in it, but Skyver said it's not sexy or titillating at all, it's mostly a metaphor for addiction. We talked about In the Night Garden and several other Catherine Vallente books, like Comfort me with Apples, Space Opera, and In the Cities of Coin and Spice.
Incorrigible_Muffin read a few books: Recovery Dharma: How to Use Buddhist Practices and Principles to Heal the Suffering of Addiction, which teaches a series of quick, practical techniques; This is How You Lose the Time War by Max Gladstone and Amal El-Mohtar; two John Scalzi books: The Kaiju Preservation Society and Starter Villain; The Other Significant Others by Rhaina Cohen, a series of case studies of deep friendships and platonic soulmates, trying to refocus of what society values to community and friends. She recommended a memoir by Rachel Willis The Risk it Takes to Bloom. The last one talks about becoming a woman, but missing those most important milestones in your life like your body developing through puberty.
She told us about You Dreamed of Empires by Álvaro Enrigue with Natasha Wimmer (Translator), describing it like a Bridge to Tarabithia but with time travel about anti-colonial uprisings; The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard, which she said was a mindfuck, but with interesting bureaucracy; and Lilith by Nikki Marmery, calling it lush and sexy and suggested you read it in a natural environment like a garden. I had brought in The Violence by Delilah S. Dawson for Assaulty to borrow, and Muffin said it is an excellent follow-up to Brutalities: A Love Story by Margo Steines. Aimee said it reminded her of The Power by Naomi Alderman. The author of The Violence Dawson got her start by writing Star Wars novels; I thought that was pretty cool.
We talked about Friends Don't Fall in Love by Erin Hahn, which is a sizzly slow burn, but funny; and A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid. But I didn't catch who brought those up.
We talked about the new series Fallout. I thought that someone who hadn't played the game might not be able to get into the series, but Coconut hadn't played it and absolutely loved the show - some of the scenes are right out of the game, and the nostalgia of the experience was the most exciting part of it. The show was set in LA, and I played Fallout 3 and 4 and New Vegas, and the composition of the scenes in the show looked like they were right out of parts of these games. Coconut also said that the Bad Batch star wars cartoon was straight up good storytelling. I've heard really good things about it, but then I look at the art and am immediately turned off. To me it looks like complete ass. Coconut agreed, saying that's the worst part of the experience, but it still manages to impress. I definitely need to give it a try. Asterion7 said the same thing about Xmen 97. Skyver is particularly excited about it, saying that the animated series is the only media that really follows the comics, and the comics were pretty awesome. She used an example: Mystique is Nightcrawler' father in the comics, but Marvel cowardly ran away from that gender fluidity in all their other media content.
Muffin was excited about Walter Goggins being in Fallout because of his work in Righteous Gemstones. Aimee is reading the Silo compilationand respects what the show did. Of the written series, Asterion7 didn't like Dust, and Coconut didn't like either of the second or third books, but both loved the first one. Most people who have seen it have good things to say about Star Trek - Discovery. I keep confusing it with Voyager. I'm not sure why, but I've always avoided it because of that.

2024.05.18 20:17 sinomaltanews "L-ogħla qorti tan-NU qed tisma’ t-tweġiba ta’ Iżrael għal każ miġjub mill-Afrika t’Isfel li qed tfittex li titwaqqaf

"L-ogħla qorti tan-NU qed tisma’ t-tweġiba ta’ Iżrael għal każ miġjub mill-Afrika t’Isfel li qed tfittex li titwaqqaf b’emerġenza l-offensiva tagħha f’Rafah.
L-Afrika t'Isfel akkużat ukoll lill-Iżrael b'ġenoċidju fil-gwerra ta' Gaża.
L-Iżrael, li sejjaħ il-każ tal-Afrika t'Isfel bħala ""għal kollox infondat"" u ""moralment ripugnanti"", wieġeb nhar il-Ġimgħa li akkuża lill-Afrika t'Isfel li ressaq ""pretensjonijiet preġudikati u foloz"".
Il-kliem tal-Qorti Internazzjonali tal-Ġustizzja (ICJ) kien soġġett għal skrutinju intens minn meta l-Afrika t'Isfel ressqet il-każ tagħha u hija ċċentrata fuq l-użu tal-kelma ""plawżibbli"" fis-sentenza.
F'Jannar, l-ICJ tat sentenza interim - u paragrafu ewlieni mis-sentenza ġibdet l-aktar attenzjoni: “Fil-fehma tal-Qorti, il-fatti u ċ-ċirkostanzi... huma biżżejjed biex jikkonkludu li mill-inqas xi wħud mid-drittijiet mitluba mill-Afrika t'Isfel u li għalihom qed tfittex protezzjoni huma plawsibbli.”
Dan ġie interpretat minn ħafna, inklużi xi kummentaturi legali, li jfisser li l-qorti kienet ikkonkludiet li l-istqarrija li Iżrael kien qed iwettaq ġenoċidju f'Gaża kienet ""plawżibbli"".
Din l-interpretazzjoni nfirxet malajr, dehret fi stqarrijiet għall-istampa tan-NU, dikjarazzjonijiet minn gruppi tal-kampanja u bosta ħwienet tal-midja, inkluż il-BBC.
F’April, madankollu, Joan Donoghue, il-president tal-ICJ fi żmien dik is-sentenza, qalet f’intervista tal-BBC li dan ma kienx dak li ddeċidiet il-qorti.
Pjuttost, qalet, l-iskop tas-sentenza kien li tiddikjara li l-Afrika t'Isfel kellha dritt li tressaq il-każ tagħha kontra l-Iżrael u li l-Palestinjani kellhom ""drittijiet plawsibbli għall-protezzjoni mill-ġenoċidju"" - drittijiet li kienu f'riskju reali ta 'ħsara irreparabbli.
2:58
L-eks kap tal-ICJ jispjega d-deċiżjoni dwar il-każ ta’ ġenoċidju kontra l-Iżrael miġjuba mill-Afrika t’Isfel
L-imħallfin kienu saħqu li għalissa m’għandhomx għalfejn jgħidu jekk kienx seħħ ġenoċidju iżda kkonkludew li wħud mill-atti lmentat dwarhom l-Afrika t’Isfel, jekk jiġu ppruvati, jistgħu jaqgħu taħt il-Konvenzjoni tan-Nazzjonijiet Uniti dwar il-Ġenoċidju.
Ejja nħarsu lejn l-isfond tal-każ u kif żvolġiet it-tilwima legali.
L-ICJ twaqqfet biex tittratta tilwim bejn in-nazzjonijiet tad-dinja relatati mal-liġi internazzjonali.
Dan ifisser liġijiet li huma miftiehma bejn in-nazzjonijiet, bħall-Konvenzjoni tal-Ġenoċidju, miżura ewlenija miftiehma wara t-Tieni Gwerra Dinjija biex jerġa’ jipprova jipprevjeni tali qtil tal-massa.
F’Diċembru li għadda, l-Afrika t’Isfel nediet tentattiv fl-ICJ biex tipprova li, fil-fehma tagħha, Iżrael kien qed jagħmel ġenoċidju fir-rigward ta’ kif kien qed iwettaq il-gwerra kontra l-Ħamas fil-Medda ta’ Gaża.
Allega li l-mod kif Iżrael kien ipproċedi għall-gwerra kien ta’ “natura ġenoċidali” għax, skont il-każ tal-Afrika t’Isfel, kien hemm intenzjoni li “jeqred il-Palestinjani f’Gaża”. Iżrael ċaħad assolutament dawn l-allegazzjonijiet, u qal li l-każ kollu kien irrappreżenta ħażin dak li kien qed jiġri fuq il-post.
L-Afrika t'Isfel ikollha bżonn turi lill-qorti evidenza ċara u soda ta' allegat pjan biex isir ġenoċidju. L-Iżrael, min-naħa tiegħu, ikollu dritt jeżamina dawk it-talbiet wieħed wieħed u jargumenta li l-azzjonijiet tiegħu, fi gwerra urbana koroh, kienu awtodifiża leġittima kontra l-Ħamas, li huwa indikat bħala grupp terroristiku minn għexieren ta’ pajjiżi. Dak il-każ sħiħ jista’ jieħu s-snin biex jipprepara u jargumenta.
Allura l-Afrika t'Isfel talbet lill-imħallfin tal-ICJ biex l-ewwel joħorġu ""miżuri provviżorji"".
Dak hu t-terminu tal-ICJ għal inġunzjoni tal-qorti - ordni minn imħallef biex tiffriża sitwazzjoni, biex ma ssirx xi ħsara, qabel ma tkun tista’ tintlaħaq sejba finali tal-qorti.

L-Afrika t'Isfel talbet lill-qorti biex tordna twaqqaf minnufih l-inkursjoni ta' Iżrael f'Rafah f'Gaża
Il-qorti ntalbet tordna lill-Iżrael biex jieħu passi biex ""jipproteġi kontra ħsara ulterjuri, severa u irreparabbli għad-drittijiet tal-poplu Palestinjan"".
Fuq jumejn l-avukati taż-żewġ pajjiżi argumentaw dwar jekk il-Palestinjani f’Gaża għandhomx drittijiet li l-qorti trid tipproteġi.
Is-sentenza, li għaliha kkontribwew 17-il imħallef (b'uħud minnhom ma jaqblux), waslet fis-26 ta' Jannar.
""F'dan l-istadju tal-proċedimenti, il-Qorti mhix mitluba tiddetermina b'mod definittiv jekk jeżistux id-drittijiet li l-Afrika t'Isfel tixtieq tara protetti,"" qalet l-ICJ.
“Għandha bżonn biss tiddeċiedi jekk id-drittijiet mitluba mill-Afrika t'Isfel, u li għalihom qed tfittex protezzjoni, humiex plawżibbli.
""Fil-fehma tal-Qorti, il-fatti u ċ-ċirkostanzi... huma biżżejjed biex jikkonkludu li mill-inqas xi wħud mid-drittijiet mitluba mill-Afrika t'Isfel u li għalihom qed tfittex protezzjoni huma plawżibbli.""
Wara li ddeċidiet li l-Palestinjani f'Gaża kellhom drittijiet plawsibbli taħt il-konvenzjoni tal-Ġenoċidju, hija kkonkludiet li kienu f'riskju reali ta' ħsara irreparabbli - u l-Iżrael għandu jieħu passi biex jipprevjeni milli jseħħ il-ġenoċidju filwaqt li dawn il-kwistjonijiet kritiċi jibqgħu inkwistjoni.
Il-qorti ma ddeċidietx jekk Iżrael kienx ikkommetta ġenoċidju – iżda l-kliem tiegħu kien ifisser li kien konvint li kien hemm riskju li dan iseħħ? Dan huwa fejn it-tilwima dwar dak li fil-fatt riedet il-qorti mbagħad telaq.
F'April, madwar 600 avukat Brittaniku inklużi erba' eks imħallfin tal-Qorti Suprema, iffirmaw ittra lill-Prim Ministru tar-Renju Unit, fejn talbu jwaqqaf il-bejgħ tal-armi lill-Iżrael u rreferew għal ""riskju plawżibbli ta' ġenoċidju"".
Reuters Dehra tal-Qorti Internazzjonali tal-Ġustizzja fl-Aja, l-OlandaReuters
Il-kliem tal-Qorti Internazzjonali tal-Ġustizzja ilu taħt skrutinju intens minn mindu beda l-każ
Dan wassal għal kontroittra minn UK Lawyers For Israel (UKLFI). Il-grupp b’saħħtu ta’ 1,300 qal li l-ICJ iddeċidiet biss li l-Palestinjani ta’ Gaża kellhom dritt plawsibbli li jkunu protetti mill-ġenoċidju – fi kliem ieħor, li kienet qed tittratta argument legali kumpless u kemmxejn astratt.
It-tilwima kompliet b'aktar ittri u interpretazzjonijiet.
Ħafna fl-ewwel grupp iddeskrivew l-interpretazzjoni tal-UKLFI bħala ""logħob tal-kliem vojt"". Il-qorti, sostnew, ma setgħetx tkun imħassba biss bi mistoqsija akkademika - għax l-ishma kienu ferm ogħla minn hekk.
U, mill-postijiet kollha, id-dibattitu ikkristallizza fi sparring legali quddiem kumitat parlamentari tar-Renju Unit, iddiskuta l-kwistjoni tal-esportazzjoni tal-armi lejn l-Iżrael.
Lord Sumption, eks ġudikant tal-Qorti Suprema tar-Renju Unit, qal lill-kumitat: “Naħseb li qed jiġi ssuġġerit [fl-ittra UKLFI] li kulma kienet qed tagħmel l-ICJ kien li taċċetta, bħala kwistjoni ta’ liġi astratta, li l-abitanti ta’ Gaża kellhom dritt li ma tkunx suġġett għal ġenoċidju. Ikolli ngħid li jien inqis dik il-proposta bħala bilkemm argumentabbli.”
Mhux hekk, wieġbet Natasha Hausdorff tar-Renju Unit Lawyers for Israel.
""B'rispett ninsisti li l-qari ta' sejba ta' riskju plawsibbli li l-Iżrael qed iwettaq ġenoċidju jinjora d-dikjarazzjonijiet mhux ambigwi tal-Qorti,"" wieġbet.
Ġurnata wara, Joan Donoghue – issa rtirata mill-ICJ – dehret fuq il-programm HARDtalk tal-BBC u espliċitament ippruvat ittemm id-dibattitu billi tistabbilixxi x’kienet għamlet il-qorti.
""Ma ddeċidietx - u din hija xi ħaġa fejn qed nikkoreġi dak li spiss jingħad fil-midja... li t-talba ta 'ġenoċidju kienet plawżibbli,"" qal l-imħallef.
“Fil-ordni enfasizza li kien hemm riskju ta’ ħsara irreparabbli lid-dritt Palestinjan li jiġi protett mill-ġenoċidju. Iżda t-taqsira li ta’ spiss tidher, jiġifieri li hemm każ plawżibbli ta’ ġenoċidju, mhuwiex dak li ddeċidiet il-qorti.”
Jekk hemmx xi evidenza ta' dannu terribbli bħal dan hija kwistjoni li l-qorti hija 'l bogħod milli tiddeċiedi.

  1. Christmas time is upon the Rostov household, this seems too entail even more expense than usual. How much longer do you think they can keep up their spending before they become totally destitute?
  2. Tolstoy seems to be hinting at a sense of deja vu when describing the tedious monotony of the household. Have you ever experienced this same sense of repetition in your daily life? If so, when?
  3. Natasha repeats "the island of Madagascar" several times what do you think she means by this? Similarly what did Nastasya mean by saying "fleas, dragonflies, and grasshoppers"?
Final line of today's chapter:

NC Senate votes to ban people from wearing masks in public for health reasons
The North Carolina Senate voted along party lines Wednesday to ban anyone from wearing masks in public for health reasons, following an emotional debate about the wisdom of the proposal.
Republican supporters of the ban said it would help police crack down on protesters who wear masks — which some lawmakers called a growing concern, saying demonstrators are abusing Covid-19 pandemic-era norms to wear masks that hide their identities.
"It's about time that the craziness is at least slowed down, if not literally stopped," said bill sponsor Buck Newton, R-Wilson.
The proposal faced strong opposition from Democratic lawmakers, community activists, and advocates for people with health issues — who are concerned about the consequences of the proposal.
House Bill 237 would ban everyone, not just protesters, from wearing masks in public for medical reasons if it becomes law. It passed 30-15, with every Republican in favor and every Democrat opposed.
"It's unconscionable," said Sen. Lisa Grafstein, D-Wake.
On Wednesday Sen. Danny Britt, R-Robeson, said he thinks there's a way to interpret the law to argue that it would still be legal to wear a mask for legitimate health reasons — even though the bill would eliminate the state law that provides those protections.
Democrats weren't convinced. One lawmaker suggested there's another motive behind the changes.
"Is it really that you find masked chemo patients that threatening? Something about them makes you really angry?" asked Sen. Natasha Marcus, D-Mecklenburg. "Or is this, more likely, a desire to score some political points with the anti-mask crowd during an election year, at the expense of vulnerable people?"

2024.05.15 14:32 smallcapsteve Why young Russian women appear so eager to marry Chinese men?

In the early stages of China’s history as a communist state, the Soviet Union was often referred to as Sulian dage, or Soviet big brother. China relied on it for weapons, funding and political support. In many ways the roles have now reversed. Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, is expected to meet his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, this month in Beijing. China has been accused of propping up Mr Putin’s war machine.
Chinese nationalists are pleased with the new power dynamic. In recent months short videos have been popping up online which play to their feelings of superiority and continue a tradition of using foreigners to aggrandise China. They feature pretty young Russian women expressing their admiration for China and their desire to marry Chinese men.
The women—with names like Natasha and Sofia—speak fluent Mandarin. They complain that Russian men are drunk and lazy, while praising Chinese society and technology. For a Chinese husband, the (mostly blonde) beauties say they would be delighted to cook, wash clothes and bear children.
To Chinese men, it may sound too good to be true—and it is. The videos are deepfakes, produced with increasingly cheap artificial-intelligence (ai) tools. They are relatively easy to make using short samples of real footage. With dubbing and video-editing software producers can transform any woman into a Chinese bachelor’s dream.
Olga Loiek, a Ukrainian woman studying in America, was shocked to see her image speaking Chinese with the Kremlin in the background. She found dozens of accounts using her face. “I was disgusted and felt like my personal autonomy was violated,” she says.
The videos, posted on social media, have drawn hundreds of thousands of views. Some are used to hawk products or simply to glorify China. They have recently come under official scrutiny. Last month China’s main cyberspace regulator announced regulations which, among other things, require the explicit labelling of ai-generated fakes.
In recent weeks the videos have become harder to find. But nationalists’ pride over China’s new-found status as Russia’s big brother runs deep. And the fake Russian women were attracting their attention. Don’t be surprised if they make a comeback.

Understanding LASIK Surgery:
LASIK, short for Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, is a widely acclaimed refractive surgery aimed at correcting vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The procedure involves reshaping the cornea using a highly precise laser, allowing light to properly focus on the retina, thereby improving vision.
The LASIK Procedure:
Pre-Operative Assessment: Before the surgery, patients undergo a thorough eye examination to assess their eligibility for LASIK and determine the appropriate treatment plan.
Surgical Process: During the procedure, the surgeon utilises a specialised laser to reshape the cornea according to the patient's prescription, a process that typically takes only a few minutes per eye.
Recovery and Results: Following LASIK surgery, most patients experience improved vision almost immediately, with minimal discomfort and a quick recovery period. Full visual acuity is typically achieved within a few days to weeks post-surgery.

2024.05.13 07:34 CrystalCommittee The film that broke me (But did it?) Don't give up.

Yes, I am pinning this, because I can! (I'm the moderator and this is my thread).
Note: I'm doing this because many of you, and many more I chat with, are falling into the caveats of 'gotta do this first', etc., and nothing gets done.
So flags and warnings: THIS IS A FILM ABOUT SELF-INJURY AND DEPRESSION! (Eight years, no one bothered with the trailers and the like, then suddenly uproar, yeah...dealing with that). Note: It's all fake, absolutely no harm came to any of my actors. But I pulled it off, and spent like no money!
Why am I doing this? Because I wrote for the screen. But I'm also an editor at its base, a camera jockey, and a producer (take all the money out of those titles). I have been through all the things that you see as hurdles right now: getting the publisher, selling your book, and finding someone to produce it.
Just ask yourself, could you ever find someone like me, that didn't cost you a dime, that would work with you, and take your vision to the screen? That's a goal for most, but you don't know what is involved. I actually do.
The below links are to a film I exec. produced (I was the money I could have done it without, but I was playing the game, and I did it well), Produced (I made things happen, like coordinating locations, actors, etc), and shot it (I was the only camera -- all one). I was the Editor. (I didn't want to be, but shit happens. I color-corrected, fixed the sound, and a million other things). There is something to be said about editing your own work, and that is what I was trying to avoid. I ended up doing i, with help.
I realize 99% of you have no idea what I just mentioned above.
Twelve days, people, twelve! Everything you see, was shot with one camera in twelve days. I can't share the version I really liked that shows it all and has the music that I PAID for to be in it....shit! Youtube locked me out of that account. No worries, I can upload it, but it's on a harddrive and effort. When I say I paid for it, I put my lead actresses' sister in a recording studio to record a full album. (My lead actress had other things to do, that paid better, but I kept to my word.) I'll share with Ocham's razor (the band) 'cause yah, behind the scenes a lot on that.
But those twelve days? They had a lot before and a lot after. That screenplay XT wrote, wouldn't have ever passed a test. But she wrote it, and I said I'd shoot it. It was 30 pages (General rule, about a minute to a page) Yeah, no, that went out the window with the flashbacks. I had an MC that didn't say a word until the very end with a 12 minute monologue. (You try holding a camera through three takes of Natasha emoting in a cemetery in Bothell WA in NOVEMBER! and see how you do.)
For film, it was difficult, I didn't care. Written? Damn, it carried weight. It was a ten-minute read. Video? To get it all? about 45 mins. And yeah, directors choice, 'lights in motion' because so much of it was in flashbacks, and memory sucks. Three to four versions of a 'scene' which one is real? (If you know anything about video or theatre, lights in motion are just 'bad!'. Made it work until I had to mix shots together. (Editor stuff).
So this was the final edit of it. (Color corrected, a musical score designed for it.) Seconds And the closest I can come (right now) to how it should have been, 7b
What do I want you to get from this? you don't need the publisher house, you don't need to fork out 100's or 1000's of dollars to see it come to life. There is going to be someone like me who can do that, and we just want to add it to a bullet point in a resume. (I didn't need that, but okay.) Just before this, I shot a fan film (No money could be made on it) between witchblade and Tombraider, the comics. I had both comic writers letting me do it. Money got in the way, (And actors needing to move to greener pastures, as I couldn't pay them). It was called "Awakenings" And I did it twice over. I'm an editor at heart, so we get videos that don't do them justice. One character (Pez) Video I made because of stuff. (This was six hours in a space, and the secondary that happened in the same and time) Video This was all pre-2007. We spent hours! making it, setting up the scenes, etc, it and got boiled down to 4 min videos that get nuked because I used full songs.
I did a second attempt at awakenings, got more footage, but I couldn't go any further. And it is part of where my Sam/Amanda story comes from. Am I trying to appease the 'publisher gods?" sure, i'd like it to be that level. But I know I can go around it. And so can all of you.
Do it, because you love it. My writing was originally intended to be short webisodes, that launched off of my own server. I can't (I can, but it involves too much, capitalizing at its best). I sold my equipment to move, but you know, I can do what I did with a phone. (Gods help me for saying that).
Enjoy, watch, This is who I am. I am not chasing the 'million dollars for an idea', I'm the one that is part of the team that gets you there.

2024.05.13 06:42 Shiroudrake Maybe the Moon Sisters are the Shades, and maybe something is wrong?

Maybe the Moon Sisters are the Shades, and maybe something is wrong?
The Four Shades created by the Primordial One, when fought with the Seven Dragon Sovereign.
Before Sun and Moon "When the Doves Held Branches"
When the eternal throne of the heavens came, the world was made anew. Then the true lord, the Primordial One, came forth and did battle against the seven terrifying sovereigns, dragon-lords of the old world. The Primordial One created shining shades of itself, and the number of these shades was four.
We know two of them. Istaroth or Kairos, who is the "Shade of Time" who is Venti's "creation mother" And the "Shade of Life" who create the living beings and she was Egeria's "creation mother" Two of them are female.
The creation (or terraforming) was a "360 years long period." (400-40 = 360). And the humanity was the last creation.
"Forty Years After the Held Branches" Forty winters entombed the flames, and forty summers churned the seas. The Seven Sovereigns were vanquished, and the seven nations submitted to the heavens. The Primordial One, the great sovereign, began the creation of heaven and earth for "our" sake — that of its creations which it cherished most, who would soon appear upon this earth.
...
"Four Hundred Years After the Held Branches" The mountains and rivers were made, and the seas and oceans accepted those who rebelled and those who would not kneel. The Primordial One and one of its shades created the birds of the air, the beasts of the earth, and the fish of the sea. Together, they also created flowers, grass, and trees, before finally creating humans — our ancestors, numerous as the stars in the sky, uncountable as the sand on the shore. From that time, our ancestors made a covenant with the Primordial One, and so entered into a new age.
The Moon Sisters was older than the humanity and the Seelies. So the Moon Sisters are not Seelies
Moonpiercer The tale of the moon goes like this: this story came from a very ancient dream, one that was hidden in a Nilotpala Lotus. Long before Aramuhukunda had been born from the pomegranate, and before a great and noble race and your ancestors walked the earth together, There were once three sisters. When night came, they would leave the pearl-colored palace to roam the desert, and Nilotpala Lotuses would bloom at their feet.
We know who and when created the Shades We don't know who and when created the Moon Sisters But both the Moon Sisters and the Shades exist in the creation period. There were Three Moon Sisters and Four Shades. 3 ≠ 4
But the Moon Sisters was a lover, the Stars of Daybreak So now we have four ancient gods in two side.
Moonlit Bamboo Forest Vol. 3 These three luminous moons shared but one love, the stars of daybreak
The Moon Sisters and the Stars of Daybreak were travelling in the sky with their carriage or chariot. Those are not a synonyms of a planet, because "the sky is a hoax" so more like a flying machines or floating islands like "Celestia" and the Jade Chamber (the Jade Chamber can move)
In a long time ago possible around 6000 years ago when Rex Lapis was young. Nibelung the Dragon King cames back from beyond the sky and using with the "Forbidden Knowledge" attack the Primordial One. The war makes a Gereat Calamity, and the Primordial One was used the Divine Nails to clear the world.
Nibelung = Second Who Come:
(Soure: Istaroth's scriber a human who lives long time ago) Before Sun and Moon "The Funerary Year"
The second throne of the heavens came, and war was rekindled, as it was in the world's creation. That day, the heavens collapsed and the earth was rent asunder. Our ancestors and their ancestral land fell into this place during that conflict.
The era of darkness had begun.
(Soure: Nabu Malikata who was a seelie and an ancient god) Amethyst Crown "It was a faraway time of calm and peace. Divine envoys spoke openly with the people then, bringing them the word from the heavens..." "But, in time, invaders descended from beyond the firmament, bringing with them destruction, overturning rivers, spreading plagues..." "And though the invaders brought war to my former kin, they also brought about illusions that could break through shackles to the land." "But the master of the heavens, consumed by fear for the rising tide of delusion and breakthroughs, sent down the divine nails to mend the land, laying waste to the mortal realm..." "We then suffered the torment of exile. Stripped was our connection to heaven, to our powers of enlightenment..."
(Soure: Apep the Dendro Dragon Sovereign who was older than the gods) Nahida Second Story Quest Apep: It's a long story... We all once believed in the distant past that only forbidden knowledge could give us enough power to defeat the Heavenly Principles. Apep: The Dragon King (Nibelung) acquired the power of darkness from outside of this world and led us in a fight against the order established by the outsiders. Paimon: D—Dragon King!? Apep: An unimaginable war took place in Teyvat, causing destruction on an unprecedented scale. The world itself was on the verge of collapse. Apep: In war, the victor would inherit the right to shape the world, while the losers must turn into ash... Apep: But I didn't give up on searching for a way to turn the tides, even after the death of the Dragon King. Apep: As I attempted to collect more forbidden knowledge from the corners of the world as it was on the verge of collapse... I was stopped by the giant spike that fell from the sky.
3 of 4 chariots/carriages was fallen from the sky. A Sun Chariot and Two Lunar Carriage
When the Sun Chariot fallen creates the Chasm. Deep in the chasm are the ruins of an ancient city with similar architecture to Khaenri'ah.
The Grave of the Guarded Traveller: Was this upside-down city built by Khaenri'ah/Abyss Order?? Dainsleif: Not necessarily. The closer we draw, the more I am inclined to conclude that these ruins belong to a more ancient civilization still. Dainsleif: The Abyss Order simply got to them before anyone else. Paimon: Even older than Khaenri'ah? Whoa, Paimon can't even imagine back that far... Dainsleif: That said, the architecture here does somewhat resemble that of Khaenri'ah... At least, it would if it were the other way up. Dainsleif: Let's head toward the light over there. Mind your footing on the way ahead. It's a long way down.
A part of the Sun Chariot the "Fleeing Jade" was impact in northern Lisha. It's wery possible the Fleeing Jade was Zhongli. That means ho was one of the subordinatas of the Stars of Daybreak, (maybe the creation or the son) Just Look at the Dunyu ruins architect, it's a same as the Guili Assembly, there giant "Milelith Guards" statues, ad in a neighbour of MT Tianheng.
Stone Tablet Compilations: Vol. I In the beginning, Rex Lapis descended. He lowered the tides, raised Mt. Tianheng, and calmed the waves. Thereupon, peace was brought to the people.
Solar Relic It is said that Rex Lapis was still young, the sun was a chariot that raced across the earth. When the three sisters of the night sky were martyred in a calamity, the solar chariot fell into a deep gorge.
Records of Jueyun Vol. 6 In a past beyond memory, when even Rex Lapis would still have been young, a star fell from the sky into the barren plains west of Liyue. These plains were transformed into a huge and deep chasm in the wake of that star's descent, and jade would emerge from within, beautiful and limitless, and it would become the foundation for a thousand years of industrial mining in Liyue thereafter.
Legend has it that when that nameless star fell, a fragment of it broke off and crashed into the rocks in northern Lisha.
As most know, wordless stones harbored soul and spirit, and in manners and times not witnessed by mortal eyes they watched and listened to the ley lines' pulses, the echoes of the alpine springs, and the slow but inexorable movements of the mountains.
But unlike the ordinary but enduring stone of the earth, the fragments of the meteorite that fell from heaven had a proud and agitated temper.
Enkanomiya is floating island beneath sea and the surface in a very great cavern and was created same time when the Chasm. So I think this is one of the Fallen Moon Carriage
Before Sun and Moon "The Funerary Year"
The second throne of the heavens came, and war was rekindled, as it was in the world's creation. That day, the heavens collapsed and the earth was rent asunder. Our ancestors and their ancestral land fell into this place during that conflict.
After that Abrax/Aberaku built the Dainichi Mokoshi (with Istaroth help) to light up the dark deep. Dainichi Mokoshi literally means "Divine Chariot of the Great Sun" And its possible he used parts of the Moon Carriage when built it
Before Sun and Moon "The Year of Blindness"
The sage Abrax's wisdom was awakened, and he unveiled a light-bringing miracle from within his hands. So our ancestors began to build the Helios, with him as their leader.
The Subterranean Trials of Drake and Serpent Enjou: First, you'll need to find something known as the "Golden Bridle" According to related literature, it's a device that is less than an armful in size. Paimon: Oh, so it's not a rope? Enjou: The name is simply derived from one of Byakuyakoku's legends. They say that the sun and the moon were moved by the chariots of the gods. Enjou: And the Golden Bridle was Byakuyakoku's national treasure.
And third Divine Chariot was possible fallen where Khaenri'ah is. More precisely there is two "crater" the Turning Hollow which is Khaenri'ah's entrace, and the Vourukasha Oasis which is Nabu Malikata "homeland" And based the Gate position the City beneath the Oasis.
Nabu Malikata was connected with the Moon Sisters. She is subordinates or a children of one of them like Zhongli.
Moonpiercer There were once three sisters. When night came, they would leave the pearl-colored palace to roam the desert, and Nilotpala Lotuses would bloom at their feet.
Ay-Khanoum's Myriad Gorgeous purple flowers bearing semblance to the moon bloomed wherever she stopped by. They were named "Padisarah."
And also the city they built together with Deshret. The name Ay-Khanoum, means the City of the Moon Maiden.
Malikata was the Lord of Flowers and based on this she was propably the subordiantes or creation daugter of the Moon Sister of Life or the Shade of Life. Also that means She was Egeria's little sister. Nabu Malikata was a Seelie Egeria created the Oceanids whose are literally a Hydro Seelies.
BUT! Peruere (Arlecchino) stroy and lore that Moon Sisters was more connected to Death than the Life.
For me its looks like Peruere concept is based on two Honkai Impact Character. The one is Raven who has a similar appareance and both of them are an Orphanage Director The other is Seele whose weapon is a Scyte and "she was" the Herrscher of Death in the previous era, and she is the Herrscher of Rebirth in the current era. And Seele has double personality.
It's looks like Mihoyos seems to be interested in dealing with the topic of dissociative personality disorder Both Honkai Impact and Genshin Impact contains characters with double personality. (I haven't played the Star Rail yet.) In Honkai Impact: Kiana, and Seele In Genshin Imapct: Azhdaha, Layla, and Furina
Herrscher of Death/Rebirth powers is the Life and Death manipulation.
What if the Shade of Life also the Shade of Death? Or call her the "Shade of Life and Death" or the "Moon Sister of Life and Death"
Some interesthin thing about Peruere
Hu Tao and Peruere Both is Pyro Polearm character whit Pyro Conversion ability. Both connected with the theme of death. Neither works well with healer teammates Can heal themselves with their Bursts Both of them have flower shaped pupill and can mark the enemies with those flower. ("Using the elemental skill")
(So maybe Arlecchino = Hu Tao 2.0 XD)
And there is and other character who has a flower shaped pupill and can mark the enemies with those flower. She is Nahida. It's simply logic that the avatar of Irminsul also created by the the Shade of Life or somehow connected. And an interesting opposite where Nahida power based on the knowledge and remembering and Peruere has the power of forgotting.
The Artifacts. Whe have 5 pieces in a set.
Maybe The Flower of Life and the Plume of Death connected the Shade of Life and Death. Maybe the other three pieces connected with the Shades.
In Mondstadth there is three charactes whose have an artifact shaped conbstellation.
Lisa is an Electro chararacter with a Hourglass constellation. The Electro Resonance is the Energy Recharge, in main stat only in appears in the Sands of Eon. The Electro Erchon, Ei's power based on the Energy Recharge. Also she and her sister connected with Istasroth. Istaroth worshiped both Mondstadth and Inazuma (Enkanomiya). Ei is the God of Ethernity The latin tempus means both weather and time.
Barbara is a Hydro character with a Grail constellation. It's maybe fun if we call that is Neuvillett's glass. But the first Hydro Archon more like connected with Flower of Life. Something is not OK. (But later)
Rosalia is a Cryo character with a Crown constelaltion. The Cryo Resonance is the Crit%, in main stat only in appears in the Circlet of Logos.
In Arlechino Character demo at 40s the narrator has same Voice Actor as Bronya
English https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnYFVP3c_bs&t=40s
Japanese https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etJuE22vDr0&t=40s
Chinese https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qSDZmbE66o&t=40s
Korean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtSKIcJ1Lh0&t=40s
The Circlet of Logos another name is Crown of Reason. And Bronya is the Herrscher of Reason (I hope Tsaritsa will has a motorbyke!)
So the connections Flower of Life and Plume of Death -> Shade of Life and Death Circlet of Logos/Crown of Reason -> Shade of Reason Sands of Eon/Sands of Time -> Shade of Time (Istaroth)
In Enkanomiya we can get three Achievements named Kairos' Constancy)
Kairos is Istaroth other name, we could logically think that also Phosphoros and Hesperus is the member of the Four Shades.
Phosphorus is Morning Star in the Greek Myth. And the Morning Star is the syninym of the Stars of Daybreak whose Sun Chariot fallen in the Chasm.
Hesperus is the Evening Star in the Greek Myth
In our World both Phosphorus and Hesperus refer to a same star the Venus So thats maybe means the driveruler of the Sun Chariot is the Shade of Morning and Evening, or the Shade of Light and Darkness
So I thought in this point if the Shades has two sides they are:
Shade of Life and Death Shade of Time and Weather Shade of Light and Darkness Sahde of Reason and "Instinct" (as the opposite of reason)
But something is not OK
Istaroth name from the demon Astaroth who is demonized of the Goddes Astarte/IstaAttar
Astarte/IstaAttar symbol is the Venus. That means Istaroth is the Stars of Daybreak and Phosphorus and Hesperus is also refers to her. Ok its logic because she was the only god who helped Enkanomiya's pepeole. And the morning and evening is a time period. The Sun and the Moon and the Stars can be use the measuring of time.
Istaroth survived the impact, and her divine chariot was repaired and replaced with the people of ancient Liyue. Maybe this chariot is the floating island tha we call "Celstia"?
Solar Relic It is said that Rex Lapis was still young, the sun was a chariot that raced across the earth. When the three sisters of the night sky were martyred in a calamity, the solar chariot fell into a deep gorge. The mountain people, taking it for a sign, repaired the device, allowing it to shine through the darkness again. And though it was returned to its constant westward cycle, a single piece would forever remain behind. When they moved to the city, they would grind that fragment into crystals and sell it to someone who knew its value...
And teh weather is not the opposite of time. ( Followings are not perfectly logic sorry for that)
What is? If we say the "Space" then the Shades are
Shade of Life and Death Shade of Time and Space Sahde of Reason and "Instinct" And an Unkown Shade
Talk again the Artifacts Barbara is a Hydro character with a Grail constellation. Goblet of Eonothem The Eonothem is the chronostratigraphy version of the Eon And the other name is Cup of Emptiness or Cup of Space or Cup of Void
Just in mention: In Sumeru the is a Varuna Contraption weather controll device In the Vedic Myth Varuna is the god of Sky and the Oceans The Sun Symbol:
https://preview.redd.it/6yxu8h2ye30d1.png?width=1290&format=png&auto=webp&s=8fe586bb06a6afe3527abc620b7d0edaa7c0464d
The Unknown God concpet based on Kina Herrscher of Void form from Honkai Impact. Maybe she is Istaroth?
But she was attacked the Shiblings. Or maybe saved them?
In the Opening, she sealed the Twins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXykl-4he1A
But the Traveller never mentioned how to break the seal. Traveller: When I woke, I was all alone.
Maybe she was send them into the future? (Or into the present from the past in our viewpoint) Maybe she didn't want them to have the same fate as the Third Descender? Maybe she want them to do something, but she couldn't say them to what?
Interesting thing: The Sundial in the Nameless Island (Mondstadt) points to its starting point of the Game. The rock on which the Traveler was sitting.
Istaroth works again the Primordial One or the Heavenly Principles?
The Primordial One itself or ordered someone to cut down or destroy Irminsul. (or kill Buer the God of Knowledge) And this is propably ereased everyone memory. But Istaroth saves a branch and Buer with it.
Before Sun and Moon "The Parable of the Tree" The king's gardener and the tree spirit of the royal garden were in love. But the king wished to repair the beams of his pavilion, and so needed to cut down the tree with the most spiritual energy within it. The king was the incarnation of the Primordial One, and the gardener could not defy the sovereign of sovereigns, and so he could only bring his plea to the king's priest, who was the incarnation of Tokoyo Ookami. The priest had pity on the gardener and said to him: "Go, and cut the branches of the spirit-tree down." The gardener did so, and afterward did as the king ordered, cutting the spirit-tree itself down. Then the priest said: "Plant the spirit-tree's branches in the ground." But the gardener said: "A spirit-tree shall take five hundred years to grow." The priest said: "Your one thought shall echo through eternity." And so the gardener planted the branches in his back yard. In an instant, the slim branches grow into a new tree, and the new tree spirit was a continuation of the past one. For it is the God of Moments who is able to take "seeds" from this "moment" into the past and the future.

Before Sun and Moon The Tenth Year of Sun and Moon
Abrax is long gone. The events before the sun and the moon have been recorded sufficiently. Well, if I did not dare to write things down just as they happened, how could I consider myself a scribe of Tokoyo Ookami?
Hark, I hear armor without. Here, I shall stop writing.
But the Heavenly Principles not too happy for it.
The Subterranean Trials of Drake and Serpent
Enjou: These chronicles are known to the people here as the times "before Sun and Moon." Back then, no gods walked the earth, and the whole land belonged to a single civilization. Paimon: Was there ever really such a time? The bards claim that the times "when gods walked the earth" is the furthest back we go! Enjou: Yes, that's precisely it. That's why I wanted to find this book. That way, we, the Abyss Order, would have proof. Proof that the gods and Celestia came from beyond this world. Enjou: The only thing I do know at the moment is that the Great Serpent was sentenced to death by Celestia for accidentally reading this book.
The Heavenly Principles want to erease all of knowledge of hte past, but Istaroth want to save rhem.
Perhaps Istaroth is behind all the fairy tales that hide the ancient history of Teyvat?

Directors at the Box Office: Wes Craven
https://preview.redd.it/5jhcjegtjuzc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=71a26f361e87730152e07e12f1bc76322db0b023
Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Wes Craven's turn.
Craven earned a master's degree in philosophy and writing from Johns Hopkins University. He subsequently bought a 16mm film camera and began making short movies. His friend Steve Chapin informed him of a messenger position at a New York City film production co, where his brother, future folk-rock star Harry Chapin worked. He started in the industry as a sound editor, before transitioning as a porn director. He said he made "many hardcore X-rated films" under pseudonyms. And then he transitioned into directing for the big screen.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1970s, some of the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

The Last House on the Left (1972)

"Mari, seventeen, is dying. Even for her, the worst is yet to come."
His directorial debut. The film stars Sandra Peabody, Lucy Grantham, David Hess, Fred J. Lincoln, Jeramie Rain, and Marc Sheffler. The plot follows Mari Collingwood, a teenager who is abducted, raped, and tortured by a family of violent fugitives led by Krug Stillo on her seventeenth birthday. When her parents discover what happened to her, they seek vengeance against the family, who have taken shelter at their home.
Craven, who had no money at the time, was put on the job of synchronizing dailies for Sean S. Cunningham's Together. They became friends, and Hallmark Releasing gave them $90,000 to make another film. Craven considered a hardcore film, but decided to tone it down a bit. The idea for this film came from Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring, and Craven wanted to make a film in which the violence would be shown in detail onscreen, as he felt that many popular films of the era, such as Westerns, glamorized violence and the "vigilante hero", and gave the public a misleading representation of death in the wake of the Vietnam War.
The film attracted negative media attention for its heavy graphic content, and there were calls for some theaters to drop the film. But you know, bad buzz is still buzz and that translated to a pretty good run in theaters, earning up to $3 million in its initial run. Even to this day, the film is polarizing due to its violence and themes. But Craven just made his name well known.
  • Budget: $90,000.
  • Domestic gross: $3,100,000. ($23.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $3,100,000.

The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

"A nice American family. They didn't want to kill. But they didn't want to die."
His second film. The film stars Susan Lanier, Michael Berryman and Dee Wallace. The film follows the Carters, a suburban family targeted by a family of cannibal savages after becoming stranded in the Nevada desert.
Craven wanted to make a non-horror, but he found that his investors only wanted films with graphic content. At the New York Public Library, Craven checked the library's forensics department, and learned of the legend of Sawney Bean - the alleged head of a 48-person Scottish clan responsible for the murder and cannibalization of more than one thousand people. He drew influences from this, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Grapes of Wrath. Craven also had to cut a lot of scenes to avoid getting an X rating.
The film once again drew negative attention for its violence. But it made over $25 million at the box office, which was an even bigger success than House. It subsequently earned a cult following.
  • Budget: $700,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,000,000. ($128.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $25,000,000.

Deadly Blessing (1981)

"Pray you're not blessed."
His third film. It stars Ernest Borgnine, Maren Jensen, Susan Buckner, and Sharon Stone, and tells the story of a strange figure committing murder in a contemporary community that is not far from another community that believes in ancient evil and curses.
It received negative reviews, but it was another box office success for Craven.
  • Budget: $3,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,279,042. ($28.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $8,279,042.

Swamp Thing (1982)

"Science transformed him into a monster. Love changed him even more!"
His fourth film. Based on the DC Comics character created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, it stars Louis Jourdan and Adrienne Barbeau. It tells the story of scientist Alec Holland who is transformed into the monster known as Swamp Thing through laboratory sabotage orchestrated by the evil Anton Arcane. Later, he helps a woman named Alice Cable and battles the man responsible for it all, the ruthless Arcane.
The film made $2.5 million domestically, despite mixed reviews.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $2,500,000. ($8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $2,500,000.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

"If Nancy doesn't wake up screaming, she won't wake up at all."
His fifth film. It stars Heather Langenkamp, John Saxon, Ronee Blakley, Johnny Depp, and Robert Englund. The film's plot concerns a group of teenagers who are targeted by Freddy Krueger, an undead child killer who can murder people through their dreams, as retribution against their parents who burned him alive.
The film was inspired by several newspaper articles printed in the Los Angeles Times in the 1970s about Hmong refugees, who, after fleeing to the United States because of war and genocide in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, suffered disturbing nightmares and refused to sleep. Some of the men died in their sleep soon after. This, along with the song "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright, motivated Craven to craft a horror film focused on people dying through their sleep.
The film's villain, Freddy Krueger, is drawn from Craven's early life. One night, a young Craven saw an elderly man walking on the sidepath outside the window of his home. The man stopped to glance at a startled Craven and walked off. This served as the inspiration for Krueger. Initially, Fred Krueger was intended to be a child molester, but Craven eventually characterized him as a child murderer to avoid being accused of exploiting a spate of highly publicized child molestation cases that occurred in California around the time of the film's production. He settled on the name Freddy Krueger, which was based on a childhood bully of his.
The process of writing the film went smoothly, the real problem was finding a studio. Craven sent it to most studios, and all rejected it. The first studio to show interest was Disney, but Craven declined their offer as they wanted a more toned-down kid-friendly PG-13 flick. When Paramount and Universal also turned it down, Craven decided to go to the independent studio New Line Cinema. The studio only distributed films, but they agreed in financing the film. As they lacked the financial resources for the production, New Line had to turn to external financiers.
Despite opening in just 165 theaters, the film earned $1.2 million in its opening weekend, making it clear that it would be an immediate box office success. It eventually closed with $25 million domestically, and $57 million worldwide. It received critical acclaim, and has been referred as one of the best and most influential slashers ever made. Freddy Krueger would soon be hailed as one of the most emblematic figures of horror, and Craven quickly earned a reputation as a horror legend. But most importantly, it was the beginning of New Line Cinema as a studio, which is why it's referred as "the house that Freddy built."
The film would later spawn a franchise, although Craven wouldn't direct any of the "sequels." Why the quotation marks? We'll get to that later on.
  • Budget: $1,100,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,624,448. ($77 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $57,185,134.

The Hills Have Eyes Part II (1985)

"So you think you're lucky to be alive."
His sixth film. The sequel to The Hills Have Eyes, it stars Tamara Stafford, Kevin Spirtas, John Bloom, Michael Berryman, Penny Johnson, Janus Blythe, John Laughlin, Willard E. Pugh, Peter Frechette and Robert Houston. It follows a group of bikers who become stranded in the desert and find themselves fighting off a family of inbred cannibals who live off the land.
The film was shot on a very low budget, and it simply ended prematurely because they ran out of funds. There are no box office numbers available, but it received awful reviews.

Deadly Friend (1986)

"There's no one alive who'll play with the girl next door."
His seventh film. Based on the novel Friend by Diana Henstell, it stars Matthew Laborteaux, Kristy Swanson, Michael Sharrett, Anne Twomey, Richard Marcus, and Anne Ramsey. Its plot follows a teenage computer prodigy who implants a robot's processor into the brain of his teenage neighbor after she is pronounced brain dead; the experiment proves successful, but she swiftly begins a killing spree in their neighborhood.
Craven wanted to make a PG-rated science fiction film, with a similar tone to Starman, hoping to prove that he could make something that wasn't horror-themed. An unfinished version of the film was screened to a test audience of Craven's fanbase, and it was poorly received for its lack of violence and gore like his previous films. So WB decided to rewrite the film, adding more scenes with tons of gore. This made the final film appear tonally jumbled, and it went from easy PG to struggling to not get an X rating.
The film was poorly received for its story and inconsistent tone. It also marked a huge flop at the box office, not even hitting $10 million. Craven lost interest in the film after WB inserted their own version, and he has since disowned the film.
  • Budget: $11,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,988,731. ($25.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $8,988,731.

The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)

"Don't bury me, I'm not dead!"
His eighth film. It stars Bill Pullman, and is loosely based on the life of ethnobotanist Wade Davis, recounting his experiences in Haiti investigating the story of Clairvius Narcisse, who was allegedly poisoned, buried alive, and revived with a herbal brew which produced what was called a zombie.
The film received mixed reactions, but it was a much needed box office success for Craven.
  • Budget: $7,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,595,031. ($51.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $19,595,031.

Shocker (1989)

"No more Mr. Nice Guy."
His ninth film. It stars Michael Murphy, Peter Berg, Cami Cooper, and Mitch Pileggi, and follows a serial killer who uses electricity to come back from the dead and carry out his vengeance on the football player who turned him in to the police.
Another mixed bag for Craven, but it was still profitable.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $16,554,699. ($41.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $16,554,699.

The People Under the Stairs (1991)

"In every neighborhood, there's one house that adults whisper about and children cross the street to avoid."
His tenth film. It stars Brandon Adams, Everett McGill, Wendy Robie, and A. J. Langer. The plot follows a young boy and two adult robbers who become trapped in a house belonging to a neighborhood's crooked landlords after breaking in to steal their collection of gold coins as the boy learns a dark secret about them and what also lurks in their house.
After a slate of mixed performers, the film received Craven's best reviews since Elm Street. To the surprise of Universal, it was also a box office success.
  • Budget: $6,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $24,204,154. ($55.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $31,347,154.

Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)

"This time, the terror doesn't stop at the screen."
His 11th film. The installment in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, it stars Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, Miko Hughes and John Saxon. The film is not part of the same continuity as previous films, and it portrays Freddy Krueger as a fictional movie villain who invades the real world and haunts the cast and crew involved in the making of the films about him.
While Craven co-wrote the franchise's third installment, Dream Warriors, he wasn't that involved with the rest of the franchise. He wanted to make a deliberately more cerebral film than recent entries to the franchise, as he considered them as being cartoonish, and not faithful to his original themes. Specifically, he wanted Freddy to resemble his original vision: far darker and less comical. To reinforce this, the character's make-up and outfit were enhanced, with one of the most prominent differences being that he now wears a long blue/black trenchcoat. In addition, the signature glove was redesigned for a more organic look, with the fingers resembling bones and having muscle textures in between.
The film received high praise, and was considered as the best film in the franchise since the original (it was Englund's favorite). But the franchise has been bleeding interest at the box office, and New Nightmare unfortunately had to suffer. It was profitable, but it became the lowest grossing film in the franchise.
  • Budget: $8,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $18,090,181. ($38.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $19,721,741.

Vampire in Brooklyn (1995)

"A comic tale of horror and seduction."
His 12th film. It stars Eddie Murphy, Angela Bassett, Allen Payne, Kadeem Hardison, John Witherspoon, Zakes Mokae, and Joanna Cassidy. It follows a Caribbean vampire who seduces a Brooklyn police officer who has no idea that she is half-vampire.
The film had awful reviews, and despite the presence of a huge star like Eddie Murphy, it disappointed at the box office. Craven really needed a hit.
  • Budget: $8,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,751,736. ($40.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $34,951,736.

Scream (1996)

"Someone has taken their love of scary movies one step too far."
His 13th film. It stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich and Drew Barrymore. Set in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California, Scream's plot follows high school student Sidney Prescott and her friends, who, on the anniversary of her mother's murder, become the targets of a costumed serial killer known as Ghostface.
As he was trying to make it in the industry, Kevin Williamson watched a Turning Point documentary about serial killer Danny Rolling which he said left him unsettled. Williamson later noticed an open window, armed himself with a knife, and called his friend for support. The pair began discussing horror characters that had resonated with them such as Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. This experience prompted Williamson to start developing a concept wherein a girl is haunted by a caller.
He started writing a film titled Scary Movie, and even left an outline for possible sequels. The concept was part of an era where there was debate over the influence of cinematic violence on audience, with Williamson coming up with a brilliant line "movies don't create psychos, movies make psychos more creative." It was inspired by many 1980s slashers, even though the genre was on decline by that point. His characters were intentionally designed to be knowledgeable about these horror films and their typical elements, with the intention of creating a unique killer who was not only aware of horror film clichés but also exploited them for his own advantage.
While Williamson struggled with his previous films, this script was part of a bidding war with the studios, to the point that Oliver Stone himself wanted to direct it. Miramax (through Dimension Films) bought the script, and Williamson made some rewrites to scale back the violence. Bob Weinstein also wanted to change the name, as he believed the audiences would think the film is a comedy.
The studio considered Danny Boyle, Tom McLoughlin, Sam Raimi, Robert Rodriguez, George A. Romero, Quentin Tarantino, and Anthony Waller as prime candidates to direct the film, but they all preferred to view the film as a comedy. Wes Craven was considered, but the studio believed he couldn't direct a satire. Craven also wasn't planning on directing it, as he wanted to focus on more mainstream films to salvage his career. Craven's assistant Julie Plec (who would collaborate with Williamson on The Vampire Diaries) convinced him in helming the project. By signing, Craven decided to get back some of the gore that was missing in the previous drafts.
A huge contrast to the horror films of the era was that the film had established actors as the leads, as Craven and Williamson wanted to prove that no character was safe. Drew Barrymore had already starred in a few recognizable names, Neve Campbell was on the hit show Party of Five, Rose McGowan was known for Encino Man and The Doom Generation, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich were recognizable supporting characters, and Courteney Cox obviously was known for Friends. Vince Vaughn and Natasha Lyonne were the preferred choices for Billy and Tatum, but external problems caused them to drop out.
After viewing the dailies raw footage, the Weinsteins criticized the quality of Craven's work as "workmanlike at best", believing it lacked tension and had an inconsistent tone. The Weinsteins also disliked the mask design, and said Barrymore lacked sex appeal because of the pageboy hairstyle she had chosen. While filming the final fight, Campbell's stuntwoman accidentally stabbed Ulrich with an umbrella tip, missing the protective vest he was wearing and hitting the site of an open heart surgery Ulrich had as a child. During post-production, Harvey Weinstein decided to name the film as Scream based on the Michael and Janet Jackson song.
In a surprising move, the Weinsteins decided to release the film during the holiday season as counter-programming, offering teenagers an alternative to more traditional holiday fare. The decision was unpopular with the cast and crew, with Williamson expecting the film to fail. The film opened with $6.4 million and finishing in fourth place, leading analysts to consider the film as a bomb.
But the film just kept growing.
Buoyed by positive word of mouth, the Weinsteins increased marketing and the film managed to increase in its second and third weekends. It closed with $103 million domestically and $173 million worldwide, becoming the highest grossing slasher film ever and Craven's highest grossing film ever. The film received critical acclaim for its characters and writing, and has since been deemed as one of the most influential horror films of all time. It rekindled interest in horror, resurrected Craven's career and launched the careers of Williamson and the cast.
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $103,046,663. ($245.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $173,046,663.

Scream 2 (1997)

"Someone has taken their love of sequels one step too far."
His 14th film. The sequel to Scream, it stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jamie Kennedy, Laurie Metcalf, Jerry O'Connell, Elise Neal, Timothy Olyphant, Jada Pinkett, and Liev Schreiber. The film takes place two years after the first film and again follows the character of Sidney Prescott, along with other survivors of the Woodsboro massacre, at the fictional Windsor College in Ohio where they are targeted by a copycat killer using the guise of Ghostface.
As Williamson already had plans for sequels, the idea was for Sidney to attend college while being stalked by a copycat Ghostface killer. As filming began, Williamson's script had four killers: Derek, Hallie, Cotton Weary, and Nancy Loomis. But after Williamson transferred his script to the production, it was leaked onto the Internet in full, revealing the identity of the killers and a large amount of the involved plot. This resulted in the production continuing to film with only a partial script while Williamson conducted extensive rewrites, changing much of the film's finale, the identities of the film's killers and drastically altering the roles of other characters such as Randy Meeks and Joel. With a short deadline, Williamson couldn't fully compromise on the final script, forcing Craven to fill in the gaps himself. So the film was one of the very first cases where the Internet leaked major aspects of a film.
As the Weinsteins wanted the film ready for December, it was able to capitalize on the audience's word of mouth to the original. It opened with $32 million in its first weekend, almost five times as big as the original, and the biggest December debut. It didn't hold as great as the original due to the competition, such as Titanic, but it still made $172.3 million worldwide, almost matching the original's gross. It also received very positive reviews, and so a profitable franchise was already underway.
  • Budget: $24,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $101,363,301. ($237.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $172,363,301.

Music of the Heart (1999)

"She gave them a gift they could never imagine. They gave the system a fight it would never forget."
His 15th film. The film stars Meryl Streep, Aidan Quinn, Angela Bassett, Gloria Estefan, Jane Leeves, Kieran Culkin and Jay O. Sanders. The film is a dramatization of the true story of Roberta Guaspari, who co-founded the Opus 118 Harlem School of Music and fought for music education funding in New York City public schools.
After seeing the documentary Small Wonders, Craven was inspired to make a full-length film about Guaspari. Madonna was originally signed to play the role of Guaspari, but left the project before filming began, citing "creative differences" with Craven. When she left, Madonna had already studied for many months to play the violin. Streep learned to play Bach's Concerto for 2 Violins for the film. The project marked a huge departure for Craven; it was his first and only film to be rated PG, and his only one to not be horror or thriller.
It received generally positive reviews, but it bombed at the box office. It received 2 Oscar nominations for Best Actress and Best Original Song, the only Craven film to get any noms.
  • Budget: $27,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,859,394. ($27.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $14,936,407.

Scream 3 (2000)

"The most terrifying scream is always the last."
His 16th film. The third installment in the Scream franchise, it stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox Arquette, Parker Posey, Patrick Dempsey, Scott Foley, Lance Henriksen, Matt Keeslar, Jenny McCarthy, Emily Mortimer, Deon Richmond, and Patrick Warburton. The film's story takes place one year after the previous film's events and follows Sidney Prescott, who has gone into self-imposed isolation following the events of the previous two films but is drawn to Hollywood after a new Ghostface begins killing the cast of the film within a film Stab 3.
The plans for a sequel were already underway since Williamson sold the script, although Williamson still didn't write a script yet. When the Weinsteins approached him to write the film, Williamson was already busy with many projects (including his directorial debut), and was unavailable to perform his duties. He only made a 20-page outline wherein Ghostface would return just as production on a fictional film Stab 3 would be filmed. His plan was to show the killers were part of a Stab fan club (this idea would later be adapted into his show, The Following). With Williamson not available, Ehren Kruger was tasked in writing.
Shortly before production began on the film, the Columbine High School massacre took place, and many parties began looking for reasoning behind the shooters' actions and there came an increased scrutiny on the role of the media in society, including video games and film, and the influence it could have on an audience. With production of Scream 3 not yet underway, there were considerations about whether the film should be made at that time, aware of the potential for negative attention but the studio decided to press forward, albeit with changes.
The Weinsteins demanded to scale back on the gore and emphasize its satiric humor, as well as moving the setting to Hollywood. At one point in the production, the studio went as far as demanding that the film feature no blood or on-screen violence at all, a drastic departure for the series, but Craven directly intervened. One of the aspects changed was that the killer would be revealed to be Stu Macher, having survived the original film. The Weinsteins changed it after Columbine, as they didn't want to associate violence and murder with a high school setting.
The film opened with $34.7 million, a franchise record and the biggest February debut ever. But it had weak legs, although it still made a very profitable $161.8 million worldwide. While the previous films were well-received, this film received negative reviews, who lambasted the film for becoming the very own thing it satirizes.
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $89,143,175. ($178.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $161,834,276.

Cursed (2005)

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
His 17th film. It stars Christina Ricci, Joshua Jackson, Jesse Eisenberg, Judy Greer, Scott Baio, Milo Ventimiglia, Shannon Elizabeth and Mýa, and follows two orphaned siblings attacked by a werewolf loose in Los Angeles.
Kevin Williamson started working on a script that followed the exploits of a New York City serial killer who discovers that his lethal tendencies are due to his lycanthrope nature. When one of his projects was scrapped, Craven decided to direct, teaming them up again for another Scream reunion. But it wasn't planned like that. Craven was making a film, Pulse, when Bob Weinstein abruptly pulled the movie from the schedule ten days before shooting and cut through all the slow lanes, wanting Craven to get to Cursed as soon as possible. Craven was reportedly not pleased so Weinstein doubled his pay in order for him to direct the film. The director deemed the script too tonally similar to his film Vampire in Brooklyn, but felt pressured by the studio, leading him to ultimately sign on.
The film started filming in January 2003, hoping to get the film released in August. In June, they only had six days left for filming. Suddenly, Dimension Films decided to put the movie on hold because top executives at the company weren't happy with the film's ending or how the special effects were progressing, specifically the look of the film's lead lupine. Rick Baker was preparing the final transformation effects when production stopped and asked Weinstein to let his team finish the work in order for it to be ready for the reshoot, but he refused. Patrick Lussier was brought in for massive rewrites, and the film didn't return to production until November. Baker was fired, and the prosthetic make-up was replaced with CGI. Skeet Ulrich filmed his scene as one of the leads, but chose to drop out following the reshoots as he disliked the new direction. It was also heavily edited to get the R rating down to PG-13. The budget was originally $35 million, yet some reports suggest it ballooned all the way to $100 million, making it one of the most expensive horror films ever.
With that budget, it was clear it was not going to be a box office success. It flopped with just $29 million worldwide, and was panned by critics. Craven himself dislikes the final product, and a director's cut was never an option because his original ending was never filmed.
  • Budget: $100,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,297,522. ($30.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $29,621,722.

Red Eye (2005)

"Fear takes flight."
His 18th film. It stars Rachel McAdams, Cillian Murphy, and Brian Cox. The story follows a hotel manager ensnared in an assassination plot by a terrorist while aboard a red-eye flight to Miami.
The film received Craven's best reviews in years, and was a box office success, earning almost $100 million. While he is fine with people loving it, Cillian Murphy is not really fond of the film, "I love Rachel McAdams and we had fun making it but I don’t think it's a good movie. It’s a good B movie."
  • Budget: $26,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $57,891,803. ($92.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $96,258,201.

My Soul to Take (2010)

"Only one has the power to save their souls."
His 19th film. It stars Max Thieriot, Denzel Whitaker, Raul Esparza, and Shareeka Epps. It follows Adam "Bug" Hellerman, who is one of seven teenagers chosen to die following the anniversary of a serial killer's death.
This was Craven's first film in almost two decades where he would be directing, producing and writing. But that didn't pan out to a success: it was a critical and commercial dud.
  • Budget: $25,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,744,435. ($21.1 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $21,500,813.

Scream 4 (2011)

"New decade. New rules."
His 20th and final film. The fourth installment in the Scream franchise, it stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Anthony Anderson, Alison Brie, Adam Brody, Rory Culkin, Marielle Jaffe, Erik Knudsen, Mary McDonnell, Marley Shelton, Nico Tortorella, and Roger L. Jackson. The film takes place on the fifteenth anniversary of the original Woodsboro murders from Scream and involves Sidney Prescott returning to the town after ten years, where Ghostface once again begins killing students from Woodsboro High.
In 2010, Williamson and Craven confirmed their plans for a new film. Craven said that endless sequels, the modern spew of remakes, film studios, and directors are the butts of parodies in the film. The main characters have to figure out where the horror genre is in current days to figure out the modern events happening to and around them. This was the first film in the franchise to use CGI, with the knife's blade added in post-production.
Even though the franchise was profitable, it seemed like its glory days were long behind it by the time it hit theaters. The film disappointed in its opening weekend with just $18 million, and closed with a weak $97 million worlwide, far less than the previous films. It also received mixed reviews, particularly for its writing and new characters. It was the last film directed by Craven before his death in 2015.
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $38,180,928. ($53 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $97,231,420.

The Verdict

Quite inconsistent, but a very iconic figure in the horror genre. You know you made it big when your creations include Elm Street and Scream. Craven often struggled with difficult productions (you can blame the Weinsteins for that), but he still managed to make competent and scary films, even if some are better than others. Some even see critical re-appraisal as time passes; even Scream 3 and Scream 4 have their fans. We don't know what he would've done with the franchise after the fourth film, but he made it clear he was exhausted by having to film without finished scripts. Rest in Peace to a horror legend.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Clint Eastwood. I think I'll have to make two posts, given that he directed 42 films.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... Ang Lee. A legendary Asian director.
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
May 13-19 Clint Eastwood Great actor. Great director.
May 20-26 Robert Zemeckis Can we get old Zemeckis back?
May 27-June 2 Richard Donner An influential figure of the 70s and 80s.
June 3-9 Ang Lee What happened to Lee?
Who should be next after Lee? That's up to you. And there's a theme.
And that theme is: controversial directors. I'm talking directors who have attained a polarizing response to their films (like Zack Snyder), or the directors themselves are also controversial figures in real life (like Oliver Stone). Basically, a director that has as many fans as haters.

  1. Nikolai Rostov went from being furious in the previous chapter to being relatively calm in this one. Why do you think this is? Do you think Tolstoy was saying something in this?
  2. Why do you think Natasha is so keen to join the hunt? And as an aside, does anyone know if it was unusual for a woman to participate in hunting?
Final line of today's chapter:
... He cast down his eyes and hurried out as if it were none of his business, careful as he went not to inflict any accidental injury on the young lady.

2024.05.10 23:29 Honest_Ad_2157 Discussion thread for continuing our adaptation watch to the end of Book 6 (AKA Book/Volume 2, Part 3)

Three weeks ago, I proposed that we use this weekend to catch up to various adaptations. The 2016 BBC Adaptation finishes Book 6 (AKA Book/Volume 2, Part 3) at 7:25 into Episode 4, which weirdly begins with a shot of the comet that doesn't happen until 1812 (I don't consider an astronomical event a spoiler). If you've haven't gotten too far into Book 7 (AKA Book/Volume 2, Part 4), don't go past the scene with Natasha on the stairs at that point. There be spoilers!
u/regular56 has graciously given us a guide to the Soviet/Russian adaptation.
If anyone else has notes on adaptations, put them here!
Looking forward to seeing your observations and comments!
