[A4F] What if the Demon Lord won?... [Medieval Fantasy, Post-Apoc, Romance?]

2024.05.17 00:42 coaxialcity [A4F] What if the Demon Lord won?... [Medieval Fantasy, Post-Apoc, Romance?]

It's been a year since the war.
The war where the heroes lost, the demon king won, and the entire land was plunged into darkness and despair. How haughty the humans and their allied were, proud of their chosen ones, light-blessed and equipped with the finest swords and armor. Yet the only news they received was that their entire party was wiped.
Thus, disappeared the hope.
The mighty walls that once stood tall, fell fast to siege. Morale amongst the kingdom and their pact nations quickly eroded into despair. The elves retreated into the forests, withdrawing to the protection of the Yggdrasil, the World Tree's blessing fading slowly to the darkness. The dwarves quickly traded loyalties, their talents in forging and smithing becoming easily translatable into a tool for the demonic forces. The merfolk withdrew their relations from the terrestrial, knowing that the sea at least would offer them a haven that the demons could not invade, at least not yet.
The demons were a poison rain upon a sugar cube, quickly dissolving human society.
But there were those that stood against the overwhelming darkness. Small outposts of humanity attempted their best to survive in this era, scavenging what remained of the world before, under the red skies of the demon king's rule. Those who still wielded magic and blade, dreaming of a day where races that didn't thrive on cruelty and evil could flourish yet again...

Hello! And yet another prompt from yours truly. This is a medieval fantasy roleplay, with main themes of post-apocalypse and survival, along with possibilities of things like enemies-to-lovers, adventure, romance, and more! It very much depends on how we decide to write it, as the world is pretty expansive!
Please note that I'm comfortable playing either role! Some prompts within the world the demon lord rules:
~~~
About myself: I'm 25+, and I can only promise you lots of imagination and creativity in a roleplay. I prefer 3rd person, with about 2-7 paragraphs of detail and action in every reply. I'm usually able to reply a few times a day, depending on your timezone (I live in PST). I write female/male/non-binary, play a multitude of characters. I prefer using Discord.
About you: 21+, literate, and can write at least two paragraphs per reply. Preferably can reply one to a few times a day. Can play a multitude of characters as called for, and loves world-building! Preferably uses/prefers anime style face claims. Be willing to provide a writing sample, please.
Looking forward to exploring this wasteland with you!
How haughty the humans and their allied were, proud of their chosen ones, light-blessed and equipped with the finest swords and armor. Only to receive the news that their entire party was wiped, their heads displayed as trophies on poles. Speared through the mouth, a grim reminder of the fate of the world.
The mighty walls that once stood tall, fell fast to siege. Morale amongst the kingdom and their pact nations quickly eroded into despair. The elves retreated into the forests, withdrawing to the protection of the Yggdrasil, the World Tree's blessing fading to the corruption of darkness. The dwarves quickly jumped ship, their talents in forging and smithing becoming easily translatable into a tool for the demonic forces. The merfolk withdrew their relations from the terrestrial, knowing that the sea at least would offer them a haven that the demons could not invade, at least not yet.
The demons were an absinthe on a sugar cube, quickly dissolving human society.
[Spoilers all] This is the Monomyth. The theory. - Third part (III)
Let's see what the Golden Grove is like. Let's try to understand what trees it actually consists of.
The forest in elven memory is not only green spaces intricately woven into tales for a sense of elven flavor. It is a symbol of lives.
Elves have their heroes, just as we do; they honor the Vallasdahlen—Life-Trees—of these legendary figures. Planted in remembrance of those who dedicated their lives to the Dalish kingdom, these trees grew into a mighty wood, a testament to the elves' force at their height.
Walk beneath the Vallasdahlen with reverence; remember that each of them once had a name”. —From In Pursuit of Knowledge: The Travels of a Chantry Scholar by Brother Genitivi Codex entry: Vallasdahlen.
"I hear that most humans in Orlais do not call this place by it's true name. They find it an inauspicious one and refer to the forest only as the Greatwood. They refuse to see anything but wood and moss and leaves, and hope to remain ignorant of the blood that was spilled. But we of the People remember. We feel the weight of what was lost, and we see, not trees, but lives given for freedom". —As told by Keeper Gisharel of the Ralaferin clan Codex entry: The Emerald Graves
An old elven tale The Rowan Grove told by Sarel a Dalish elf sitting at the campfire near Zathrian's aravel in the Dalish Camp:
This is elven legend according to which an unlucky hunter cut down a rowan tree in the forest to make bows. The bows were cursed due to the fact that the rowan tree was a receptacle for the spirit. The keeper asked other hunters to bring a rowan sapling to their camp to ask for forgiveness from the spirit and give it a new home.
“There was a terrible sound then, as if the whole forest were crying out in protest. Darkness fell upon the camp, though it was just past midday. And when the darkness passed, a rowan grove, every tree bearing the frozen face of a terrified elf, stood where the camp had been. From then on, it was forbidden in every clan to cut living trees in the Brecilian Forest. The spirits know nothing of forgiveness". —"The Rowan Grove: A Dalish Tale," from Ferelden: Folklore and History, by Sister Petrine, Chantry scholar Codex entry: The Brecilian Forest.
PCs of Dalish origin can obtain this Codex entry from a tree stump located the in Forest Clearing.
In Brecilian, perhaps the elves also planted trees for the sake of their fellow tribesmen. And maybe this stump also had a name once. When asked Grand Oak about elves living in the Brecilian Forest "It was the elves who planted the seeds, raised the forest, saw to its needs. But that was all...so long ago. That they are dead is all I know." In those places there were battles due to which the Veil became very thin. Probably many of the elves died at that time. But the forest remained after them.
However, a tree can be a symbol not only of a specific elf, but even of an entire People bound by common memory and traditions. The trees in elven culture do not reflect the naive Dalish tales with which the elves replaced memories of the soaring towers of Arlathan. These are ancient, not always fully understood, symbols of lives which were promised, which are remembered, that are part of something greater.
Sing for the past—where rests those who came before. For each knight, a seed was sown, roots twisting with their brothers and sisters. So theforestgrew, a reflection of our might.
Forget not the past—it is all that remains. For each knight, a seed was sown, roots twisting with their brothers and sisters. So the forest remains, a reflection of our sorrow. —Codex entry: The Emerald Knights
The Alienage in Edgehall and in Kirkwall.
This is how the roots of these trees are painted. It can be assumed in Vhenadahl many generations are intertwined into one People.
"Before the ages were named or numbered, our people were glorious and eternal and never-changing. Like the great oak tree, they were constant in their traditions, strong in their roots, and ever reaching for the sky.
But while our ancestors were caught up in the forever cycle of ages, drifting through life at what we today would consider an intolerable pace, the world outside the lush forests and ancient trees was changing".—The Fall of Arlathan, as told by Gisharel, Keeper of the Ralaferin clan of the Dalish elvesCodex entry: Arlathan: Part One
The world was changing, but the majority of elves did not want to change. They still hold on to their roots to this day. This is especially visible in the Dalish, who can be compared to a tree stump still has it roots, but no longer has it trunk and foliage, they have no home and no future. They see their future in their past.
City elves, on the other hand, do not hold on to their past enough, but still honor it in those symbols that they have not yet forgotten. It's getting more and more difficult though. But they have a home and a place where they can grow from their roots into the future. Although their present is sorrowful, they continue to reach for the sun. To a greater extent towards The human Sun.
Sera: My people just said the Inquisition should look at him.
Inquisitor: Your people? Elves?
Sera: Ha! No. People people.
"Mostly the old ways are gone. Each generation forgets a little more of the old tongue, a little more of the traditions. And the few things we keep become simple habits, the meaning long since faded.
So it is with the vhenadahl, the tree of the people. Every alienage has one, I'm told. Or they used to. When I was a little girl, my mother told me the tree was a symbol of Arlathan, but not even she knew more. Keeping the vhenadahl is just a habit, now. Many cities have let theirs wither and die, then chopped them up for firewood. No great loss". —Sarethia, Hahren of the Highever Alienage. Codex entry: Vhenadahl: The Tree of the People
From Old Elven Poetry.
Where Willows Wail (Roughly Translated):
We/it lost eternity or the ruined tree of the People,
Time won’t help when the land of dreams is no longer our journey.
We try to lead despite the eventual failing of our markings.
To the inevitable and troubling freedom we are committed.
When we could no longer believe, we lost glory to war.
When the Wolf failed/won, we lost the People to war. —Documented by minstrels assisting the University of Orlais in cataloguing folktales of Thedas; The WoT v.2 p.201
In the comic Dragon Age: Knight Errant, issue 1-2: Coran is uncle to Vaea and left the alienage to join a Dalish clan. He also counsels her not all humans are evil. The problem, he suggests, is humans are driven to change the world while elves are more likely to recognize they cannot and accept the world as it is. Attempting to change the world leads only to killing, or death.
When human cut down the tree of the People in the Alienage of Vaea, the city elves for some reason could not grow a new tree from a seedling of the old one. They waited for the Dalish to bring them this tree from the forest. It is the Dalish who believe they can one day teach their fellows how to be elves.
This must be the only reason. This is ordinary tree is often an oak, it can also be something else. It's not a special species of Vhenadahlus Vulgarium or anything like that.
"In time, the human empires will crumble. We have seen it happen countless times. Until then, we wait, we keep to the wild border lands, we raise halla and build aravels and present a moving target to the humans around us. We try to keep hold of the old ways, to relearn what was forgotten.
We gather every ten years for the Arlathvhen, to retell the ancient stories and keep them alive. For when the human kingdoms are gone, we must be ready to teach the others what it means to be elves". —Gisharel, Keeper of the Ralaferin clan of the Dalish elves Codex entry: The Dalish Elves
There are also trees on the hills in the sacred cemetery of the elves in the Exalted Plains, Var Bellanaris, a wolves lie near their roots as guards. The trees look specially planted I think. Otherwise, they would not be located strictly in the center of the hills, but would have different locations. It doesn't look like these were the Emerald Knights buried here. Nevertheless, the wolves are here.
It’s not surprising, after all, Var Bellanaris "Our Eternity" in Elvish. And there is a guardian who can save a statue under streams of water or an ancient temple, or something else that has been untouched by time for many centuries and millennia. There he is in the right place. He remembers.
https://preview.redd.it/34xq4arwbu0d1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a344bb71774944a088976b3f70b963302d0bbb66
He is like the spirits of the old forest, where the Veil is thin, who remember for centuries what happened in this place a long time ago.
In The Three Trees to midnight by Patrick Weekes, it is mentioned Strife used the name ghosts for the spirits of Arlathan Forest because Irelin told him that they remembered what was here. This is mentioned immediately after the elf drove away the spirit was pursuing Myrion.
This is what the Arlathan Forest looks like from the spirits' place.
https://preview.redd.it/v1iy1w6agu0d1.jpg?width=1846&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e0611c113074c459d3668e477503c0f5174c57ac
Old lives and deaths woven into the roots of ancient trees in a faded gray space. Who remembers them now except the spirits? And do even the spirits remember these roots?
Their lives, their promises, their sacrifices, their legacy.
I believe all symbolism this helps to understand what kind of trees grow in the Golden Grove in which the Hunter from legend met with Something beyond.
2024.05.12 21:51 Resident-Vanilla1491 Asta and Yuno are MFTL with Multi-Solar System AP
Asta/Yuno most accurate and recent scale: 5/12/24
Starting from Black Asta #1 - Asta Elf Arc
Speed {1} : FTL+
Light magic is stated to be the fastest magic type by Julius (The wizard king) and is also stated to move at the SoL by Gauche when he fought against Patri
Asta is capable of blitzing and attacking this Patri who DID IN FACT notice him, stare at him, and was still not able to dodge him (FTL)
https://preview.redd.it/t3jg4nxku10d1.png?width=1240&format=png&auto=webp&s=3f6dcbb1d9b58647b23190d456bd2e8b5a5a5846
(DEP) Asta is capable of reacting, deflecting, dodging, and contending against a Dark Elf Patri (DEF) who is stated to have gotten "way stronger" by Asta. Yuno also claims that DEPs "Dark Light" is "fast" and "even with mana zone I couldn't evade it at all"
https://preview.redd.it/z6re8i1pu10d1.png?width=1100&format=png&auto=webp&s=cdc75b6c3ee8c67203836bf5d02d0759a6daf053
https://preview.redd.it/44fcc26mu10d1.png?width=348&format=png&auto=webp&s=93f1340913f783d57264f30c1c0faf9d246a1e03
This is coming from a Yuno who is amped with elven mana AND is in spirit dive who has already been shown to dodge light in that same mode (amped with elven mana + spirit dive)
As their is no way to quantify DEP speed just from "way stronger", im going to say base patri is SoL at a low-ball (As he could keep up with Yami so should logically be above SoL but wtv) and DEP is FTL because of what I stated earlier. This is because Yuno is later capable of dodging and out speeding DEP FTL attacks and catching him inside of a wind tornado as he was rushing towards Yuno (FTL+)
TLDR: Base Patri = SoL <<< Base Asta blitzing him = FTL <<< DEP >>> Base Patri = Asta Contending with him = FTL+ << https://preview.redd.it/n0pd4u3qu10d1.png?width=1239&format=png&auto=webp&s=bff552fcb382e6b20f79c1bff81156c9b305a3ee
Yuno Scales to Asta in this fight as they both could react and fight on par with DEP. Asta got a stronger devil form and Yuno got amped by elven mana. They are equal here.
AP {1}: Planetary
Asta is capable of dispelling, cutting through, and overall countering full-on attack from fire spirit amped ladros in his first Black Asta form
The fire spirit is capable of "a single swing of its claws can dry up an ocean"
https://preview.redd.it/6xo49jqqu10d1.png?width=953&format=png&auto=webp&s=403850e8cadf96a524c7b6a8be8eda5dbb857dae
Im lowballing by using the smallest real world ocean, The arctic ocean. I'm using ChatGPT for this calc. If you think ChatGPT is unreliable then that's a you problem. I am not skewing the results. I am not telling it to say things. You can input my exact prompts as well for yourself. I will leave the exact prompts, screenshots, and everything else below or you can dm me for them. These calcs are legit. I have nothing to hide
Chat GPT Prompt: "how much energy would it take to dry up the arctic ocean"
Answer Summarized:
"Drying up the Arctic Ocean would be a colossal feat, both practically and energetically. The Arctic Ocean is massive, covering an area of about 14 million square kilometers (5.4 million square miles) and holding an average depth of about 1,038 meters (3,406 feet)."
................
"So, it would take approximately
4.24
×
1
0
22
4.24×10
22
joules of energy to evaporate all the water in the Arctic Ocean. This amount of energy is astronomically large and far beyond our current technological capabilities. It's worth noting that this calculation doesn't even take into account the energy required to transport and distribute this much heat across the Arctic Ocean, which would further increase the energy requirement."
Now for my second prompt: "what size planet can it destroy"
Answer summarized:
"This is the mass of a theoretical planet that would require approximately
4.24
×
1
0
22
4.24×10
22
joules of energy to completely disperse it, assuming similar density to Earth. To put this in perspective, this theoretical planet would be about 1.5 times the mass of Earth.
So, a planet roughly 1.5 times the mass of Earth could potentially be destroyed by
4.24
×
1
0
22
4.24×10
22
joules of energy."
So to summarize, assuming the planet in question is the same density of Earth, this amount of energy could potentially destroy a planet up to 1.5x the size of Earth. Asta also could fly straight through the full-power beam of fire spirit energy adding to his Durability.
So after all of this, I think its very comfortable to say Planetary + Asta especially considering that the amount of energy needed to dry up the arctic ocean "doesn't even take into account the energy required to transport and distribute this much heat across the Arctic Ocean, which would further increase the energy requirement."
AP {3}: Multi-Planetary
Now fast forwarding WAY ahead to the spade arc, Asta is capable of negating and slashing apart the ancient demon that is capable of 1 shotting the entire clover country.
https://preview.redd.it/hitusm7su10d1.png?width=602&format=png&auto=webp&s=944953338cd6d3a91a3cbcce8b0a30f5ff9488b4
When Lumiere fought this demon, zagred stated: "still at this rate, there wont be anything left you know" referring to its attack and then later Lumiere states: "that's even if i block it, the country will be-!!"
https://preview.redd.it/2lqx7wntu10d1.png?width=355&format=png&auto=webp&s=98ba81ad3c28c19e0a889885f5e80093c3ace5db
Lumiere is CLEARLY alluding that the clover country will be decimated by this single attack meaning that this attack has country DC/AP. In another translation, Lumiere says "kingdom" instead of "country". If you are going to try and say that kingdom doens't still = the entire country then you are just lying to yourself. A kingdom is the entire land that someone is the ruleking of. It doesn't stop at the capital city. Your kingdom is your entire country. If you are the king of Sweden that means Sweden is your kingdom. Dont argue bull$hit semantics like that.
When Asta negated the attack Damnation states "All that magic... and he erased it?!!" Magic scales to the user by default. If your magic isnt as powerful as another, youll have no chance of affecting that other spell in any meaningfull matter especially when it comes to completely erasing it. In this case Asta anti-magic. He needs to have ATLEAST that much anti-magic to negate that much regular magic.
https://preview.redd.it/i0khp8wuu10d1.png?width=1440&format=png&auto=webp&s=69b1a31a0a31e26583af5139ded0ea2b3ed6716c
Now im going to delve into some chain scale. We know that Lumiere was able to deal with an ancient demon as well. In fact, that ancient demon stated it could end the world but lets ignore that for now. Lumiere = country to country + since he nearly died trying to defeat it but Nero sealed him last minute. We know that the ancient demons arent as strong as Zagred as Zagred is capable of taking on the entire cast at once at that time. Unawakened Licht already scales to a Planetary+ Asta and he was also blitzing and taking on Yuno at the same time as Asta and incapacitated Asta with pure phyiscal power. Awakened Licht + Lumiere could BARELY keep up with Zagred. Infact, Zagred chopped of Lumieres arm which would take Country AP at the minimum. Zagred could also block and stop Astas attack meaning that Zagred is also easily Planetary +. Patri also states that Lumiere and Lichts magic together are not capable of damaging Zagred. Lumiere is already country and Licht is stronger than Lumiere. Country + DURA
To get Asta to Multi-Planetary, im going to get Zagred to Multi-Planetary first, Licht uses a spell which utilizes all of the apostles of sephirah's power including Yuno (Ultimate magic: sword conquering eon)
https://preview.redd.it/wgpzgjzvu10d1.png?width=859&format=png&auto=webp&s=0b769dd66861d0157030c8a7312024577adc34f2
These same apostles were capable of contending with Mereleona and damaging Fuegoleon even when using Mana Skin which amps your dura. Did i forget to mention this was a Fuegoleon amped with the fire spirit? So by simple logic, atleast SOME of the apostles are over planetary. Licht attack Zagred with not only his full power but ALL of the other apostles mana and as Yami stated "so that insane attack didn't put a dent in it, huh?" and in another translation he states "and even that powerful attack just now had no effect on it at all huh...?"
https://preview.redd.it/vhlll170v10d1.png?width=416&format=png&auto=webp&s=dbf9472b84f6764ce0b1438a52b4b317f85508ae
So that unequivocally puts Zagreds **DEVIL HEART** dura to multi-planetary as his main body was eviscerated. His heart is still his conscious though since he talks from it, smiles from it, and overall inhabits his heart like his mind. His heart tanked the attack and regenerated the rest of his body.
Asta was then shown later to be able to kill Zagreds devil heart right after Yami dimension slashed Zagreds body leaving it vulnerable. No, Yami didn't weaken Zagreds devil heart. The dimension slash had zero effect. Same as Lichts spell and anything else up to this point for that matter. Asta was the only one capable of destroying his heart which has withstood Multi-Planetary levels of damage. Asta is now comfortably Multi-Planetary AP lmao and this is WAY before even berserk mode, devil union, enhance DU, zetten. Anyways lets continue on.
https://preview.redd.it/e8pzu075v10d1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=80bd18f8fa59f2cfe7af584d2cd422ab86d01161
AP {4}: Multi-Solar System
Yuno is shown to be able to completely DELETE a minimum of 12 HRD (high-ranking devils) in 1 flick of his arm IN BASE. Literally destroying and killing all of them, heart and all in 1 SINGLE BLOW.
https://preview.redd.it/xb67uph6v10d1.png?width=602&format=png&auto=webp&s=17ab4adc62bbfb159b0a8dd773c934ee6783c001
The only high-ranking devil that we have seen up to this point was Zagred and off of simple logic, all of these HRD should scale relative to Zagred seeing as they are on the same tier. If you think otherwise thats fine but you cant substantiate that claim whatsoever. Youd have to prove that all of them are significantly weaker and less durable than Zagred. Theres more proof to show they are than they aren't so im just gonna go of of the assumption that if Zagred is a HRD and Yuno fought more HRD then they are going to be ATLEAST on par with Zagred and maybe even some stronger. This already puts base Yuno at Multi-Solar in base seeing as he can completely 1 shot them with no difficult whatsoever. We know that Asta scales to this Yuno but for the few people that are gonna say he doesn't, ill scale him cause wtv. This Yuno is a Yuno that comes 15 months after the SKA (spade kingdom arc) and was training with his star magic over that time to get stronger. Asta also was training to DOUBLE his DU (Devil Unions) time limit and to fortify its strength. This Asta was capable of keeping up with a base Lucius and got slaughtered by Paladin sister lily. 1 tapped remember this. In the LOTS, Asta in his NEW DU form, which is superior to the one he used against 50% Lucifero, lost to ichika mid diff. Ichika then got speed blitzed and almost 1 tapped by PSL (paladin-sister-lily) among her teammates aswell. in fact, Asta had to save her from getting killed by the other paladins right after her damage. Asta then later blocks and dispells THE SAME ATTACK, which just before this arc 1 tapped him, and 1 taps PSL.
What im trying to get at is PSL is amped by Beelzebub. Beelzebub should be relative in strength to atleast a 50% Lucifero as he rules the underworld with him, while at 100% through Zenon is relative to a pre-star magic Yuno, the same Yuno who could hold his own against 50% Lucifero, and Beelzebub is within PSL. The same sister lily who 1 tapped post-spade arc Asta who now ATLEAST scales to a 100% Lucifero as he could now 1 tap PSL and block the same attack that previously 1 tapped him. After Asta came back from the LOTS, he could now contend with Lucius who Yuno had already beat once and now they are fighting a 2v4 against Lucius. Asta = Yuno in final arc cry.
https://preview.redd.it/wknc0587v10d1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=f41e3d7ebd52687cffbc25a780871f6604f4df95
So basically...
50% Lucifero <<< Spade-Arc Asta <<< Final Arc Asta <<< Learning Zetten Asta <<< Ichika <<< PSL <<< Post-LOTS Asta
We can actaully take this a step farther because we know that Asta in his base and first form DU scales above lilith and namah aka 2 supreme devils. Nacht also states that their fusion is stronger than just 1 + 1 but that its a multiplier. Asta took them both on at once separately and while fused. He also 1 tapped Bael amped paladin Damnation. So that 5 Supreme devils hes defeated.
Multi-Planetary Zagred <<< Lilith/Namah <<<< Fused Lilitha and Namah <<< Asta = Yuno. If Zagred is already multi-planetary and a base Yuno could literally evaporate a minimum of 12 of them at once, this means that Asta and Yuno both are high Multi-Solar Systems of AP and DURA
Speed {2}: MFT
I've left out speed for a while now so lets get to it
We can get Asta speed to easily MFTL. On top of the fact that we know magic scales to the user, when Liebe gives Asta a devil arm he states, "that right arm isn't like it was before when i just dribbled power into it, it is power itself" this directly states that making a contract with a devil turns your entire arm into pure mana/anti-mana. So by pure logic that means that Asta in DU after getting a FULL contract with Liebe is able to utilize 100% of Liebes power and also proves that up until this point, Asta has never used a meaningfull percentage of anti-magic power. So lets just say that before this, Asta could use 5% of Liebes power. And no 5% is not disingenuous. Liebe literally said he "dribbled" power into Asta. If you think "dribbled" means anything past MAYBE 8% your crazy. Asta is already high-FTL from DEP and then FTL+ when he killed Zagred since he got even more Anti-Magic power to the point where he couldnt even control it. If he could control FTL speed and now he cant even control his new form that tells you something. This would be atleast 10x FTL or FTL+. Asta and Yuno both stated that DEP got "way stronger".
Asta Elf Arc = 5% Devil Power
DU = 100% Devil Power
Mana/Anti-Mana scales to all stats
100/5= 20
20x10= 200
Asta = 200x FTL = MFTL
Lowball still MFTL but only 100x FTL. If you really wanna cry and say that "dribbled" would still qualify for 10% devil power
https://preview.redd.it/vi8zb3m9v10d1.png?width=602&format=png&auto=webp&s=8f3e44e5572c82262f3ad5a88f19afad878507b9
Conclusions:
Asta and Yuno are MFTL with Multi-Solar System AP/Durability.
Hey notice how i didn't trashy pixel scale btw :::)))
the chatgpt stuff
theres many more pictures and things i wanted to add but theres a 20 picture limit so if u have any question lmk
2024.05.10 19:55 Necrolancer96 Summoning Kobolds At Midnight: A Tale of Suburbia & Sorcery. 199
Chapter CXCIX
Trout's Landing.
"Alright, should pro'bly be productive today." Jeb said with a groan as he stretched.
A moss bed wasn't half bad, he thought as he turned to the still snoozing Ruby. He leaned over and kissed her scaled head and tucked their eggs a bit further into the fur blanket to keep warm. He got up and looked around at his new home. The space was illuminated by only his glowing eyes but it didn't make the place feel any less cozy.
"Maybe dragons had a point living in underground lairs." Jeb muttered as he began walking down the tunnel before having to stoop a little to avoid several roots and rocks that jutted from the dirt.
He entered the main gathering area of the burrows. It didn't seem like he slept for long at least if the faint light from the ventilation shafts were any indication. The area was still abuzz with activity just like it was before as well. Kobolds darted this way and that as they bartered, traded, sorted, or decorated and expanded the burrows at an increased rate than just a day or so prior.
Jeb took note of the tools they used. While they didn't have them for long, they were starting to show the wear and tear of constant use. Not only that but they were a little unwieldy in the claws of the kobolds. Everything was a tad too big and the kobolds found themselves exerting more energy than necessary.
The kobolds made up for it by forging their own tools from stone and wood, but that wasn't any better. While more easy to hold and wield, the quality wasn't the best and already a pile for broken tools was forming as they tried their best to repair them.
They needed metal tools. Some good solid sturdy ones that they could hold easily, Jeb thought with a sigh and left the cool earthen dwelling for the cold air above. He shook his head to shake away the weird feeling of the temp and air changes before making his way back towards his now former room at the admin building.
With word of him vacating the building, the kobolds were quick to seize upon the opportunity to lay claim to it as he watched several of the zippy red-scaled lizards already scavenging what wasn't nailed down, and even those that were weren't safe either. But he didn't care anymore, Jeb thought as a kobold ran around collecting discarded pieces of pamphlets. He had a new, and cozier, home.
He entered his temporary room and found what he was looking for. A bundle of burgundy silk and gilded armor. While he took everything of worth with him down into his new home, he left the bundle of silk and gaudy gold behind along with the ruined remains of his sleeping bag and bed. While the kobolds had already started taking apart the room, none had touched the silk just yet though he did note that there were a couple of pieces of gilded armor missing since last he saw it.
"Oh well." Jeb muttered with a shrug and grabbed the bundle of silk and debated taking the remaining gilded armor or not.
While he was sure the kobolds would love nothing more than to add the gaudy things to their piles of scrap, the gold alone should be enough to buy some tools from the dwarves, Jeb thought and grabbed the remaining boot and gauntlet. Bundle of silk in, mostly, good condition? Check. A third of the gilded armor? Check. This should be enough, he thought as he left the kobolds to pilfer and deconstruct the cabin to their hearts content.
"Pro'bly shouldn't just appear in their office." Jeb muttered as he thought how to best appear without alarming anyone at the trainyard.
After some thought though, he decided that simply appearing within the trainyard itself wouldn't be TOO alarming. He hoped anyway. He COULD appear outside the trainyard. But given how last time went he wasn't sure if they'll just shoot him on sight. At least appearing inside would give him a chance to talk to whoever was in charge before potentially getting shot at.
With a sigh and no small amount of trepidation, Jeb thought of being just outside of the old workers' mess where he and the others would play their games.
"Just hope I don't get shot at."
-----
Ulrin Mercantile Hub.
What a mess, Forgrim thought as he watched the last of the funerary rites be performed from a distance. He and the others in his situation remained outside of the official service. They had no right to participate in a dwarven funeral. To be there when the honored dead were laid below the stone in the cool, firm, embrace of The Stone Father while their spirits traveled down into his Halls where they rest and prepare. Their deeds and accomplishments read aloud for all to hear while they feast and make merry until the Stone Father calls on them when the Day of Sundering comes and they are given forms of stone, hand crafted by the Stone Father himself that will march upon the land and remake it anew.
Or that was how a dwarven funeral was supposed to go. The hallowed runery was still unfinished and so such sacred services couldn't be held. From here he and the others couldn't tell what was ultimately done to the bodies, but even from a distance he could tell that none were happy about the state of affairs. Even a funeral had some merriment to it as they celebrated the dead's life and feats. But with such sacred ceremonies seemingly absent it wasn't looking like there would be such celebrations.
Forgrim sighed. They were in a sorry state. Work was progressing steadily true. But the moral of the Hub was abysmal. The lack of decent iron for tools, the recent attack, and the stormy look on Ulrin's face when he and the others returned did nothing to improve it. Especially when he declared that warriors were going to be sent into the mines in increased numbers than before.
Forgrim wasn't looking forward to going underground anymore. After seeing what lurked there in this land it was looking like he wasn't the only one. Unlike him and the few others from that day on the hill though, the others merely stiffened their backs and took to their new duties with the grim determination typical of any dwarf.
Yet another thing that seemed to separate them from their kin, Forgrim thought grimly. Any dwarf would do the same. No matter what lurked in the dark a dwarf would march down to meet it as the Edicts of The Stone Father claimed. Everything made of stone was theirs by right. Anything lurking there were merely squatters that needed reminding.
But he and the others could barely look at the dark awning tunnels forming in the mountain without terror and dread gripping their hearts. They were likely to die from fear alone before any horror could claim them, Forgrim thought broodingly.
He and the others had thought to go to the rune priests after the attack in order to resolve their issues. But they were so busy with the aftermath and were even more so when the head rune priest returned barking out orders while also organizing funerary services.
It seemed their plight would linger on for a while longer, he thought as their foreman barked at them to return to work. He sighed as he picked up his pickax and trudged along with the others towards an area designated as a new opening into the mountain. He heard others receiving similar orders and turned to look around. From what he could tell it seemed a greater effort in excavation and mining was being issued. Most of the guards stationed were being moved towards the areas as well with a small force left behind to deal with any goblins or troublemakers.
Wonder why so many were being moved. Why wouldn't they keep more above after the last attack, Forgrim thought before running into someone with a huff. The person he ran into grunted and lent a hand in assisting him up as he spoke.
"Sorry 'bout that."
"No problem manlin'. I weren't watch-" Forgrim started before he stopped speaking as he gazed up and saw the face of the one he had ran into.
The face before him belonged to a seemingly normal human. But all he could picture was stark white bone, baleful eyes, and grasping vines tearing at his clothes and flesh! The others from that day could speak no more than he could. One of them could only manage a single gasping word no more than a whisper.
"Haunter."
The Haunter frowned as he gazed down at Forgrim and the other dwarves.
"I'm sorry, have we met?"
The lack of aggression was enough for them all to find their feet enough to turn tail and flee as fast as they could. None of them were proud of it. But Forgrim dared any dwarf to not feel the same after what they went through from that creature! He didn't even look back as he ran. He was sure their foreman was yelling at them but his heart hammered in his ears like battle drums and his vision had tunneled and the only thing he could think of was escape!
-----
"That was weird." Jeb muttered as he watched the dwarves run like the hounds of hell were after them.
"Oh well." He declared with a shrug and made sure he still had his stuff before turning around and heading towards the manager's office building.
He knocked before entering and looked around at the even more chaotic mess that the office was since last he saw it. Gnomes ran around every where as they scribbled and scratched away as they copied papers into some form of runic script before stuffing them into spots of their bulging packs of office supplies they hauled around everywhere they went. Some were making adjustments to the maps of the area with words in the same sort of runes that the dwarves use.
Some he saw were also flicking away on those old calculators where you slid a bead or something from one side to the other. Others were chatting away a hundred miles an hour while poking and prodding the ancient computers around the place as they seemed to be trying to figure out how they worked.
A few looked like they figured out how they worked, but were having trouble with the keys like they weren't sure what did what. He could see a couple gnomes scratching away at the keys as they tried to re-type them in the runic script as they tried to translate Latin to Dwarven Runic with seemingly frustrating progress.
"Can I help you manlin'?" A gruff voice called from the manager's office.
Jeb turned and saw the same gilded dwarf he had done business with before glaring at him from the open doorway. The dwarf rumbled and glared at him more intently.
"What do you want?"
"Well, I thought maybe ya'll might be interested in a trade?" Jeb said uncertainly as he held up the gilded armor and silk.
The dwarf glared at him for a moment before turning a discerning eye towards his offerings. He rumbled and stroked his gilded beard with his bejeweled hand for a long moment, leaving Jeb to stand there awkwardly as the dwarf seemed to debate whether or not to entertain him.
"Very well godlin'. I will hear you." He rumbled at last before gesturing for Jeb to follow him into his office.
So Jeb did. He entered the office and saw that it was as much changed as the rest of the place. Piles of coins littered the desk along with no small amount of scales and other tools he wasn't familiar with along side many gems and jewels that glittered in the light of the room. Even the rest of the small office wasn't safe from the wealth as neat piles were scattered everywhere there was room for it while a single gnome hammered away at the computer on the desk while also jumping to doing a dozen other tasks within the room.
"What's yer offer?" Ulrin rumbled as the gnome took a brief break from his multitasking and produced several pieces of paper, a quill, and an inkwell from the large pack he had and stared intently at Jeb with rapt attention as he held onto the dripping quill like it would write the words of God Himself.
"Uhm, well. I was wonderin' if you were lookin' to trade some tools. Or if you would be willin' to sell 'em with this?" Jeb asked and placed the gaudy golden armor and the burgundy silk onto a clear(ish) spot on the desk.
As the gnome scribbled away every word Jeb said, Ulrin picked up the armor with ease and sneered at the macabre designs. He snorted but produced an eye piece to inspect the details. After several long minutes of rumbling in thought, Ulrin produced several small hammers and placed his ear against the metal before lightly tapping them. He'd rumble and do the same again in a different spot before repeating the long process again with the other piece.
Whatever he was doing Jed didn't have a fucking Scooby what it was. But apparently the gnome did because he scribbled down in that same Runic after every grumble and sound. At long last, Ulrin sat aside the gilded pieces and cocked a brow questioningly at the silk. He grunted and picked up the bundle of torn burgundy silk.
Jeb almost cursed out loud when the dwarf gave a mighty yank on the silk! The dwarf's eyebrows going up a little bit in surprise made him feel better though. Though watching him do the same thing several more times was a bit irritating. With each tug and yank he was sure it would tear, especially since he tore through it with a claw pretty easily. But it held just as fast and firm as before.
Ulrin seemed more satisfied with the silk than he was with the gold armor. At least to Jeb he seemed to be.
"So? Do we have a deal?"
The dwarf hummed and rumbled as he glanced between the golden armor and the silk. He drummed his fingers in a way that reminded Jeb of pawnbrokers on TV just before they give some horseshit low ball offer. He wasn't exactly wrong.
"No."
"No?" Jeb asked a little surprised.
"Tha armor is solid gold and more than acceptable quality. And tha silk is surprisingly strong."
"But?"
"But it's not enough for dwarven craft. I can offer a fair price for 'em though." Ulrin declared.
"I don't need money, I need tools." Jeb stated.
"Then I can't help you. What tools we have are needed at tha moment."
"Can't you make more? Aren't dwarves supposed to be master craftsman?" Jeb asked.
"Aye! It's not a matter o' craft but quality!" Ulrin declared a little heatedly.
"What's the matter?"
"We're lackin' in good iron." The dwarf stated simply.
"Iron? It's everywhere! It's just as common as coal!"
"Bah! Worthless! Not fit ta be made inta a piss pot!" Ulrin declared.
"I'm not askin' for a fuckin' tank made of the stuff! Just some small tools!" Jeb countered.
Ulrin narrowed his gaze at Jeb.
"Tha lizards?"
Jeb returned his glare.
"Yeah. The kobolds."
Ulrin snorted derisively.
"I'll not hand superior dwarven craft for a pittance like this, and especially not ta yer lizards!"
Jeb growled and left gouges in the desk. But the dwarf wasn't intimidated and met his glare easily.
"I'll not be swindled twice godlin'! Come back with somethin' o' equal value or not at all!"
Jeb snarled and started to stand when a thought came to him.
"What about food?"
Ulrin cocked a questioning brow at the sudden shift.
"What about it godlin'?"
"Alot of people 'round here. Got enough to feed 'em?" Jeb asked.
"What concern is it o' yers?" Ulrin asked guardedly.
"What if I offered a supply of food along with this in exchange for tools made for the kobolds?"
"Bah! Even if we were starvin' I wouldn't trade dwarven craft ta those lizards!"
"So don't! I don't need your best work! Just somethin' small and decent enough for the kobolds!" Jeb countered as his anger roiled just under the surface.
The dwarf grunted and turned to the gnome and spoke in some sort of shared language that Jeb was more than surprised that he could actually understand!
"How are we on rations?"
"Not good Master Ulrin. Even with shipments from the humans we won't have enough for winter without hunting." The gnome replied in the same language.
"Even without this farce o' an agreement keepin' us off tha surface o' tha mountain, with tha cold comin' it wouldn't matter." Ulrin rumbled in his language and stroked his beard in thought.
Jeb looked over to the piles of gold and jewels and other finery in order to make it seem like he couldn't understand them. One trick he learned from Morty, just because you know another language doesn't mean you have to let a native speaker know you do. He said you'd be surprised what they let slip when they think you don't know what they're saying.
Something he realized was actually surprisingly good advice from Morty, Jeb thought as he spied a garnet embedded golden band. It almost looked like a ring but was a little big to be one. Maybe a bracelet, Jeb thought as Ulrin and the gnome finished speaking and turned back to Jeb.
"What do you offer?"
"Fish, game, and some produce." Jeb replied.
Ulrin stroked his beard in thought. If Jeb hadn't just heard what he and the gnome were talking about he'd be a bit more worried. But now he could tell he was obviously haggling.
"We will need ta see tha food. If it's acceptable then we'll talk."
"Great. Wait right there." Jeb said as he got up and moved his chair back a little as he did so.
"When will you ret-" Ulrin started before blinking as Jeb had vanished from the spot he was in just a moment ago!
The dwarf sighed. He hated dealing with otherworldly beings. He took the time to appraise the offerings again. The armor was of elf make. While macabre, there was enough overly fine pretty designs in it that made it obvious. The way certain things flowed or were carved could only be made by elven hands. But at the same time it was also crude. Like it wasn't entirely made by elves, he noted.
Worth a pretty sum if only to melt it down into something of actual value, he thought as he picked up the silk. The color was a unique shade. While it looked to have been roughed up a little, it still held firmly. If he could get more from the godling then he could make a nice profit from selling it. He knew that some nobles, of this world or their own, would pay a fortune for a dress or doublet made of it.
He tugged on it once again and gave an approving grunt.
"Strong stuff."
He reached for his sword as the godling reappeared from thin air with barely a sound.
"I'm back."
Jeb got the vertigo feeling he did last time he did a rapid port and he fell back into his chair with a groan.
"Oh that's not a fun feelin'."
He leaned forward and handed a small box full of what he had to offer. Ulrin took it easily enough and peered into it. He saw all sorts of strange things. Blue apples, nightmarish fish, some small rodents already dressed, blackened potatoes, as well as some sort of crystal. He picked it up and held it out to Jeb.
"What's this?"
"Candy."
"Candy?"
"Yeah. Candied sugar?" Jeb explained.
He knew of candied sweets. But he didn't ever see any in such a shade before, Ulrin thought as he stared at the dark crystal that seemed to suck in the light around it. He wasn't yet familiar with the wildlife of this world to know if what Jeb offered was altered or not. But he knew that eating this "candy" was a bad idea.
He made no secret in tossing away the candy and gestured to the rest of the food.
"How much can you offer?"
"How does a box of food for a box of tools sound?"
Ulrin grunted and drummed his dwarven fingers against the desk in thought for a moment before making a counter offer.
"A long term trade then. Eight crates o' food for five crate o' tools."
"Why not five for five or eight for eight?"
"It will take this much food just ta mine tha piss poor iron. Makin' it will require more work. If you don't care for quality then that's what you'll deal with." Ulrin declared.
"Five crates of food, bi-weekly, for five crates of tools delivered at the end of the week." Jeb countered.
Finally a good deal, Ulrin thought as he tapped away on the desk in thought. This deal was in their favor. They got a promise of food even before delivering their end of the deal. But why? He's worked with otherworldly beings enough to know that they rarely play something in your favor unless it benefited them in some way.
"What else do you want?" Ulrin asked with a questioning brow and an accusatory tone.
Jeb shifted and looked around before reaching over to the large band he spied earlier.
"How 'bout this?"
Ulrin cocked his brow in suspicion. That was it?
"That's it?"
"That's it. You get a steady shipment of food, a bundle of silk, and some gold pieces in exchange for some tools and a weddin' band." Jeb stated.
Ulrin drummed his fingers once again.
"Can you acquire more silk?"
Jeb scratched his beard.
"Not currently."
Or maybe ever, he thought as he had no intention of making a deal with Anna after everything. At least not so soon after their last dust up. Ulrin rumbled and grunted before looking between what was offered one last time. After a few minutes, he looked up at Jeb and stuck out his large hand.
"We have an accord."
Jeb shook the offered hand, and felt the same stinging feeling he felt before when he made a deal with the dwarf. Wonder what that's about, he thought. But he got what he wanted and got rid of stuff he didn't really lack either. Fish was plentiful in the river after so long of going unfished, and he could conjure the other stuff with no problems.
With a deal set and the promise of commerce, Jeb departed with his treasure. Intent on making today a very special one for a certain kobold.
2024.05.08 18:05 LeoKru Translation into Elven
Hey all,
I'm an artist and jeweller working on a pair of wedding rings. The groom has requested that I name the rings. I think they'll be delighted if the names are in Tolkein's Elven.
What is the best way to translate something from English to Elven? Can anyone here help me with that? I need it in phonetic English, and also Elven characters if possible. I know there are different dialects - dealer's choice, as long as it's as accurate as possible.
One phrase will be: "The River of Gold and Fire." Another will be something with the word "Pearl."
2024.05.08 15:01 ibid-11962 In-Universe Lore [Post Murtagh Christopher Paolini Q&A Wrap Up #3]
As discussed in the first post, this is my ongoing compilation of the remaining questions Christopher has answered online between August 1st 2023 and April 30th 2024 which I've not already covered in other compilations.
As always, questions are sorted by topic, and each Q&A is annotated with a bracketed source number. Links to every source used and to the other parts of this compilation will be provided in a comment below.
The previous post focused on Movies and Adaptations. This installment will focus on In-Universe Lore, questions and answers that relate to matter inside the books, not about the books. The next post will focus on Murtagh (the book and the character).
In-Universe Lore
Teleportation Magic
I always assumed when Arya tried to send Saphira’s egg to Brom she missed him geographically but was that a REALLY early clue that Eragon’s his son? So he was “close” to Brom because they’re related? Yup. You got it. [T]
Why Don't People Just Teleport Around? I know Oromis said that the teleporting spell is a taxing one, but Arya sent Saphira's egg halfway across the continent on her own. It seems like it would be easier to travel long distances in a few "hops" with breaks in between. Especially once Eragon gets the Eldunarí. Good question. Maybe you'll get some answers. :D [R]
Murtagh and Brom
Since Murtagh and Brom met briefly, I was wondering, had we had more time with Brom, would he have considered Murtagh for simply who he is or whose son he is? I think he would have needed to have gotten to know Murtagh. So I think he would have been immediately suspicious of him, especially given the circumstances under which they met. And of course meeting him would have been a very emotional experience for Brom, given his history with Morzan. So it would have been difficult. And of course, once Murtagh realized who Brom was and that he was responsible for killing Morzan, then that would have made it that much more difficult. Eragon will have been so clueless in that moment. Oh yeah, but that's kind of the definition of Eragon in the first couple of books, he has no idea what's going on. He's like, "who, me, what, what?" [19]
Shades
If I recall correctly, there are only 3 or four shades that were recorded to be killed in history. What happens to all other Shades that were created? Actually, what I said in (Eragon, I think) is that there were only a few people who had killed a Shade and lived. But yes, they're super dangerous and difficult to deal with. [R]
Tornac
What happened to Tornac, Murtagh's horse? Is he still alive? How is he doing? No comment. [19]
Nasuada
I actually had a whole backstory planned with Nasuada's mother for The Inheritance Cycle and just the way the scenes worked out in the series, there was never an opportunity for that that to naturally come out in her conversations with anyone that we saw. [11]
Vegetarianism
I wonder if the elves in the Forsworn continued their vegetarianism? Sure they were evil, but I know lots of vegans/vegetarians who are still jerks to people but not animals. They may have been evil, but they weren't barbarians! (From their point of view.) [T]
Healing Magic
Will we ever learn how Murtagh healed Thorn so quickly in Eldest? Eldunarí [T]
Spirits
If spirits are self-sustaining, why are they drawn to sources of power, and why do they "drink from the emanations that give them life" despite the fact they are self-sustaining? A clarification: they're self-sustaining in the sense that they're stable patterns that can persist over time. However, like all living things, they still need sustenance, which they get in the form of energy (usually electromagnetic) that they absorb/consume from the environment. [R]
Elvish Children and Ageing
In Brisingr, Rhunön says while forging the sword Brisingr that children have something special. They are born, with "gifts of grace and gifts of power that no grown elf can hope to match" and their "blossom withers" over time. How do you feel about that quote, now that you are a father and that you have children? Oh, I stand by it. I think you could say the same is true for human children to a degree. They're born with a share of innocence and beauty even that we all lose as we age. We gain things in return. We gain wisdom. We gain knowledge. We gain strength. Hopefully we gain patience and kindness also. But there is something special about childhood. A timelessness which I suppose goes back to innocence. And of course with the elves, since they're tied into magic in ways that we aren't, there are other factors in play as well. They have powers or abilities that somehow outstretched that of any adult elf? Well, my thought was the inhibitions are lower. The barriers between them and the flow of magic is different. And so they are more naturally inclined toward wild magic. That is magic unbounded by the ancient language. And not that it always happens, but just in general, I think with the Elven children, you never quite know what might happen. And then as they get older, as they hit their equivalent of adolescence, it all becomes much more constrained and adult. When are you considered an adult for the elves, like 50 years old? I don't want to commit to an actual number at the moment. I'd have to look at it. I know I've always thought about a very rough guide would be like 20 to 30 is kind of their teenage years, roughly. And then you're not considered a young adult until well after that. And I try to think when Arya took up her role as ambassador and left, Du Weldenvarden. And it might've been when she was like 20 or 30, something like that. She would've been, really kind of too young to do that, but it'd be like a, 18-, 19-year-old going off to join the foreign legion or something, but people do that. [19]
Angela
In Inheritance, is what Angela is writing down a Doctor Who reference? Maybe. Is it raxacoricofallapatorius? Now that would be copyright infringement. Right, it is the legally distinct version of that. Yes, I am a Doctor Who fan. I have to ask, have you read To Sleep in a Sea of Stars? I actually haven't yet. That is next on the list. Well, the reason I asked is there is a certain short curly-haired woman with a cat who appears in To Sleep in a Sea of Stars that might answer a few of your questions or raise a couple more. [11]
Murtagh was an amazing ride. I just missed Angela. She does appear in the book. Just under a different name . . . [Uluthrek] [T]
Has Angela the Herbalist ever gotten drunk? Most likely. [T]
Eragon vs Barst
Would Eragon have been able to defeat Barst? Yes. [R]
Reading Magic
Jeod says "The spell you sent me, however, did not work when I read it from the scroll." I don't recall him ever being mentioned as a spellcaster. He'd have to be though, for him to be able to cast this spell right? Nope. Non-magicians can cast spells if the spells are, in essence, pre-loaded with energy. So if a scroll/gem/object is imbued with the necessary energy to enact the spell, then all you need to do is trigger the release of the energy by performing the necessary action (in this case, reading the words of the spell off the scroll). [R]
Eldunarí Training
Arya and Murtagh aren't getting ANY actual “rider” training. Eragon is the only rider alive who was taught rider-only knowledge. And neither Fírnen or Thorn has a dragon to teach them dragon-only knowledge. Don’t forget some of the Eldunarí stayed behind in Ellesméra with Arya and Fírnen. Was in deluxe edition of Inheritance and then added to later printings of main edition. [R]
Az Sweldn rak Anhûin Riders
What will happen if a dragon was to hatch in the Dûrgrimst Az Sweldn rak Anhûin? I'm not sure that the dwarves would allow any of those clan members to come before the dragon eggs. If that did happen and one dragon hatched for them, I think it'd be very difficult politically, and it's entirely possible that the dragon for whom it hatched would be exiled from their clan. I thought that maybe it will make them change, but no, it's unlikely after all since they showed so much antagonization. I mean, come on, how often do people change their beliefs? Not often. [19]
Forbidden Spells
You aren't exactly the kind of guy that I would openly give like a bad review to. Good, you should do it anonymously. That's what the internet was made for. I wouldn't give you a bad review, like under my real name, because I can't think of any other author whose magic system is specifically able to give someone testicular torsion. Could we get a firm pronunciation of that spell? It would be bowler, that's actually how you would say it. Böllr, that's ball of course, thrysta. Böllr thrysta. And it's considered the worst spell in the World of Eragon. You're really discouraged from using it. And those who use it are usually exiled and/or killed on the spot. Wow. So it's sort of akin to like an unforgivable curse. It is an unforgivable curse. That's right. Well thank you so much. I'll have to remember that spell for the next time someone suggests a really bad idea. Like leaving a bad review on my books? No, I was thinking like if someone said, hey, do you guys want to go watch Eragon? [31]
Dragons
Dragons Physics
I think something you always run into if you're trying to depict dragons as real world animals is how do you actually get them to breathe fire if there's a biological process? My solution is just magic which was easy. With a lot of CGI dragons the wings are always too small. You need massive wingspan to get a body that size off the ground. Real world physics, if you're gonna have them fly, they need to have very big wings. I have the privilege of living in a part of the country where quite a few dinosaurs have been dug up. In fact, not too far from my house, they dug up a, I think it was a brontosaurus. And the big museum near me in Bozeman, Montana, the Museum of the Rockies has one of the best dinosaur exhibits in the world. And the paleontologist Jack Horner actually worked in conjunction with that museum for many years. And I got to have a sort of behind the scenes tour with him one time and he showed me these bones from the wings of a pterosaur. Huge, huge animal. And the wings were so fragile and he was talking about the ratio of the wings to the body size and the weight that could actually lift and everything. And you either need some massive genetic engineering or some magic to make dragons actually possible. [30]
Just finished Murtagh and holy flaming dragon balls was that an amazing, wild ride from start to finish! You're very welcome! Glad you enjoyed it! (For the record, dragon, ah, gonads are internal. Just to be clear.) [T]
Where do the dragons poop? Wherever they want. [R]
Dragon-adjacent Species
What discoveries about dragons do you continue to uncover and how do you continue to draw inspiration for describing the dragons in very different ways? If I were writing a story that wasn't in the World of Eragon, something completely new, then I think I'd draw a little bit more from some stuff I've read in mythology and just other fantasy books over the years. Specifically in this series though, what I'm discovering, if anything, is just further exploration of what I've already established. So taking it to the logical extremes of, okay, if the dragons exhibit these traits, what about this? What about that? How would that actually influence things? And also in my world, I have a couple of dragon-adjacent species. Because it seemed to me that if the dragons existed, as with most creatures, there'd be something similar as well, similar, that had evolved along similar lines, but wasn't actually a dragon. So I have a couple of those. And those are fun to play with as well. [34]
Dragon Diets
How would you make a giant dragon ecologically feasible? But I don't know if there's a way to even do that. I always thought that the only way it would work would be if dragons were kind of like whales, which are predators. So you can have so many very large predators and it really depends on having enough biomass underneath them to support that. And I kind of look at various reptiles and snakes where especially as they get larger, they gorge and then they go into hibernation. They rest, they digest for sometimes months and months at times. And that could be semi-realistic and it fits with some of the mythology. But if you get into really large dragons, which is always fun to write about, even the physics of supporting their own weight aside, let's say it's magic or they've got adamantium bones or whatever and muscles, but then what are they actually eating? They'd have to go pick up blue whales and down a blue whale every once in a while. It's really the only conceivable thing. Or you'd be wiping out entire herds of everything. I think the complicating factor is that so many dragons in our books and other books are really intelligent. So you have the double whammy of a very large predator who might also have human level, if not more, intelligence. And then you really got to start wondering about the impact on the ecology. It's like, well, OK, maybe the dragon just takes a large valley and sees a couple herds there. And so it carries a couple boulders over and blocks off each end of the valley. And now its own private ranch. And you're going to live and grow there and get eaten occasionally, and the dragon's happy. See, now I'm picturing Yellow Scale Ranch, like a city of Yellowstone. And the dragon has a cowboy hat and maybe a walking stick. What do you think's under the caldera? Why do you think it erupts every so many tens of thousands of years? [30]
One thing that's never talked about enough with dragons and how they hunt and eat is just how bad it would smell if they went after a flock of sheep. Do you know how bad birds would smell? The stench would drive off every creature, every predator, every human in probably like a 20 mile radius. [30]
Dragons Eating Others
One of my favorite scenes was right after Muckmaw, when Murtagh wouldn't let him eat him. The funny thing is, when they're flying over some mountains, Thorn is talking about eating Urgals, and Murtagh makes him promise that he's not going to eat an Urgal, or a Human, or an Elf, and he conveniently leaves out the Dwarves. Which readers have immediately picked up on. And someone said, well, you know, the Dwarves do kind of have it out for Murtagh because he killed their king. So maybe Murtagh left that out on purpose. That he's just giving a little bit of a loophole for Thorn. That if Thorn needs to eat a dwarf, Murtagh's not going to be too concerned. To be fair, I do think that Saphira would really have no qualms about eating someone she didn't like either. No, but I think that she'd have justification, right? Well, yeah, I mean, Thorn's justification is he doesn't like you or he's hungry. Those are good justifications. [32]
Alcoholic Dragons
We all know that Saphira is a great mead aficionado. Is it something that's only her fancy or do some other dragons also like that? Some other dragons definitely enjoy drinking, so it's not just Saphira. There was probably some wild parties in Vroengard then. Oh yeah, and it's actually a common thing in the wild and lots of animals will try to get fermented berries and essentially get themselves drunk. So I think dragons probably enjoy a good drink now and then. It seems to be the smarter the animal, the more they like alcohol. [19]
Dragons and Riders Dying
In Eragon, correct me if I'm wrong, if the Rider dies, the dragon dies, right? So that's actually something they invented for the film version. They will often die, just because the bond is so strong. But there's nothing like that compels the death. It's more like they're suicidal, they feel horrible, and they they end it. [33]
Dragon Colors
Why is Saphira blue? Because I'm color blind. I am red-green color blind. I see both red and green, but I see less of them than someone with normal color vision. And so if you've read the books, the way that I described dragon vision is how I see the world. Blue is the most vibrant color I tend to see. And thus, Saphira is blue. However, I've been told that the blue that I think Saphira is, is actually purple for someone with normal color vision. So I see purple as the most amazing blue. So she is a purple dragon, but I say she's blue. [35]
Back when I just finished Inheritance, I had some daydreams/fanfiction about the first new dragon that would hatch after Eragon left Alagaësia. Just wondering if you have guesses on the new dragon's color? Puce. [R]
Dragon Gods
Men, Dwarves, and Elves each have their own gods and religion. What about Dragons? Do they have their own gods and religion? Dragons ARE gods. At least, that’s what *they* think. [T]
Dragons are Cats
Could dragons make good pets? I clearly prefer dogs and cats! Dogs love us for life. Cats are the perfect companions for writers. In fact, my dragons behave like cats! Like them, they have high self-esteem. They are very proud. [4]
Saphira's Hotness
I know we all hate the movie because it’s awful, but I’m rewatching now and damn is newborn Saphira adorable as all hell. She needed to be fiercer looking, like a baby hawk. But yes, very cute. [R]
Saphira's supposed to look beautiful, right? She's FABULOUS. [R]
I was just wondering what you thought about Saphira's Rule 34 page. I don't want to think about it. [31]
Shruikan
Which character do you think is the most tragic, with the most disappointments and loss? Shruikan [R]
Murtagh
Pronunciation
How do you pronounce Murtagh, your new book? Because Italians have their pronunciations, English has its own pronunciations. We pronounciation the "gh" here in Italy. First of all, in The World of Eragon there are many different dialects and languages. So the way you say his name is how is name would be said in certain parts of the world. I say Murtagh (mur-tag) but I'm an American so my vowels are very flat, and in The Word of Eragon it probably would be said much more like Murtagh (murr-tug) or something like that. Like in Italian Ci. The first time I was in Italy, for Eldest, or for my second book. My parents came to visit while I was in Italy, and I was calling their room and I called to the front desk of the hotel and I asked for their room and I gave them the last name and I said "Paolini" (pow-li-ni) and they go "No. No. No." I said "Paolini (pow-li-ni)". "No. No. No. No one by that name." And finally I went "Paolini (pay-oh-liii-niiiiiiiii)". And they go "Ohhhhhhhh". [Note that when the translator tries saying this answer back in Italian all the Paolinis sound the same.] We also have a lot of different accents in the Italian language. That may have also helped out. No, I know. My family is originally from Bologna, and I watched a lot of Italian films and shows. The difference between what you hear in Inspector Commissario Montalbano versus some of the other films is very different. [7]
I reserve the right to butcher my character's names however I darn well please. And I have gotten into extended discussions with my fans about whether it is Murtuag, Murtag, or Murtah because Murtah is actually a real Irish name. And because I'm an uncouth American and I have flat vowels, I say Murtag, but it probably should be Murtuag and of course historically it's Murtah. [33]
Murtagh's Map
Why isn’t the map in English? Because it’s Murtagh’s actual map. The translation key is in the back of the book. [T]
Did you draw this and then fold and crease the page, and this is a photograph of that, or are the creases drawn? Neither. I drew it and then placed a picture of creased paper under the drawing, on a separate layer. The map by itself, without the paper image, looks rather bare, as I designed it to work with the underlying texture. [T]
The reason it's only half of Alagaësia, is because if you translate this bit, and there is a translation key in the back of the book, it says this is an imperial map. So this is a map from the Empire that Murtagh was given before the end of Inheritance. [17]
I've gotten a few people who've been annoyed that in the map at the beginning of Murtagh, all the locations are labeled in runes, which I do provide a Rosetta Stone for at the back of the book. Of course, you have to go look in the back of the book and know that it's there in order to figure that out. So some people have been like, "How am I supposed to know where Murtagh is? Come on." But the idea was that it is a in-universe artifact. It's actually the map that Murtagh himself is carrying around, which is why it's all wrinkled and stained and actually is what he's carrying around. [34]
The map at the beginning and the other illustrations are very dark. Is this deliberate or just an error? Printing error. It shouldn’t be that dark. [T]
Runes
There was also an instance where it says that the dwarves and humans use different runes, but in Eragon, it is mentioned that they use the same runes. Same runes arranged differently. [T]
While reading Murtagh, I came across a line where he is unable to read the dwarvern runes, however in Eldest, Gannel tells Eragon that humans adopted the dwarvern runes as their own. There's a discussion about the differences between the human and dwarven runes included at the back of Murtagh. [R]
Mr Stabby vs Tinkledeath
If there will be a duel between Mr. Stabby, which technically cannot be broken, and Tinkledeath that can cut through almost everything, how will the duel ensue? I would guess that Mr. Stabby could hold off Tinkledeath, at least for a time. But trying to block a sword with a fork is very, very difficult, so I wouldn't want to try. [19]
Svartlings
You have magic, dragons, ugly bird men and their ugly Wal-Mart bird dragons, bears the size of houses, elves that dress up as furries, and rocks that grow from farm soil! What a fantastical universe Don't forget the giant boars, the horned goat/sheep people, the ten-mile-high mountains, the giant whirlpool, and the spirit-possessed magicians. Oh yeah, and what are Svartlings? [R]
Poetry
In this book there are indeed many plot twists, epic new enemies, but you know what I wasn't expecting? Murtagh becoming a poet. Was it because you've become keen on poetry as well? It's because if you've ever spent a fair bit of time without the Internet and without television and without radio and without books, you get really bored quite honestly. Especially if you have the sort of mind that like you need to do something with your mind and I think Murtagh is that sort of a person. Like he has too many unpleasant things to think about in his life and so he needs to distract himself. And after the end of Inheritance he knows he's changed and I think he's trying to think of himself in a new light as a new person. So for me it was like fifty percent him trying to entertain himself, fifty percent him trying to avoid thinking about things he didn't want to think about. And then of course outside of the actual universe of the story it's me the author enjoying doing poetry. But I wouldn't put it in if I didn't think it made sense for the character. [17]
Glaedr’s scale
The werecat Carabel tells Murtagh that he must use a dragon scale to lure Muckmaw. She insists that “only the scale of a dragon will suffice for Muckmaw.” But why Glaedr’s scale? Couldn’t they have removed one of Thorn’s to use as bait? I was surprised that neither Murtagh or Thorn thought of it — even if just to dismiss it as a bad idea. You're right: I should have addressed this in the book, if even only to have Murtagh have the knee-reaction of "I'm not pulling a scale off Thorn!" to which Carabel would have said, "I'm not asking you to." etc. [R]
Why not any other scale, why only Glaedr's scale? Why didn't Murtagh ask the same question? Murtagh would NEVER volunteer to pull a scale off Thorn. Especially not if there was a possible alternative. [T]
Who was the elf that was protecting Glaedr's scale? Murtagh literally has to stab himself to free himself from the mental grip of someone, and he's not the least bit curious as to who it is? I think it's one of the two elves standing outside the stone house in Gilead. The ones that Murtagh purposefully avoided. This. [R]
Doorways
"He blinked and took a closer look at the back wall. Was there something on the ... Yes. A faint line of white chalk. He traced it with his eyes and found that the line drew an arch from floor to head height. An arch or a doorway. The idea of a doorway. A yearning for freedom." Sounds like the kind of door Angela drew in FWW... Sure does. [T]
Scurvy
How did Murtagh not get scurvy when he was living off the land? My boy didn't have a single fruit. Organ meats and pine-needle tea. [T]
Scrying
I think [Murtagh and Thorn] are very very ignorant of magic. Like when they were talking about going south and were like "welp there's no faster way to contact anyone other than courier". I was practically screaming "YES THERE IS IT'S CALLED SCRYING YOU IDIOTS" Nasuada would be warded against random scrying, and Murtagh knows this. Pretty sure he thinks about this exact point when considering how to get info to Nasuada near the end of the Gil'ead sequence. [R]
ADHD
I was describing this book [Murtagh] to my partner while I was reading it. And he goes "these two characters sound like they have ADHD". And I was like, "I see it." I don't know. They focus pretty well on the things they do. [32]
Azlagûr
Is the "unnamed shadow" in Eragon's Guide to Alagaësia the DraumaAzlagûr? It is not referring to Azlagûr. [R]
Could Azlagûr be a Chinese Dragon? The old Chinese explanation for solar eclipses WAS a dragon eating the sun. Scary [R]
Galbatorix Motivations
You tie Galbatorix to Bachel in this book in a way. Was there was that like nerve-wracking, because there's that element of like 'oh am I going to take something away from the previous story by tying it in here'? Yeah and it's possible some people are going to view it as too much of a retcon, but to that I would say two things. One, a lot of this has been planned for a very long time by me. Two I wouldn't believe 100% everything Bachel says. I have my own theories for what Galbatorix thought and felt and was actually up to. I don't think actually that the Dreamers had as much control. In fact the whole reason I'm sure he was looking for the name of names, the name of the ancient language, was to wipe the Dreamers out in many ways. I wouldn't trust everything Bachel says. [11]
Galbatorix downfall was his unawareness of non-worded magic, but in Murtagh he and the forsworn meet Bachel who only uses unworded magic. Remember: Bachel lies. And even if she didn't, and Galbatorix was aware of wordless magic, he never would have thought to protect himself against a spell meant to help him, not hurt him. [T]
The whole "Galby lost part of his army in the spine" thing was a result (in part) of his attempt to deal with the Dreamers, and we have Bachel boasting that even Galbatorix couldn't stop them. And yet, we've been told that Eragon and the Eldunarí could have dealt with the Dreamers without too much difficulty. Galbatorix was significantly more powerful than they were, even without the Name of Names. So, if we take-as-given that Galbatorix wanted the Dreamers gone, why are they still there? He knew where they were, he knew he had the means to obliterate them, and (by his own estimation) the Varden was no real threat to him. 1. Bachel lies. 2. The Urgals wiped out Galbatorix's army. No contradiction there. Were they controlled/influenced by the Dreamers? Good question. 3. The Dreamers themselves aren't the real threat. 4. Galbatorix knew more than Murtagh/readers know. [R]
The thing that bothered me about the Ra'zac saying he's getting close to finding the Name is that I can't figure out any way they would have any indication of whether he's "close." There are many different names for the language, some more descriptive than others, but only one true name. It would be like saying, “I know Latin!” vs. “I know this exact dialect from this exact time period, and it is called X.” There are layers of specificity. [R]
Shaking the valley
Do you have a favorite scene or character or moment that you want to share? I really liked when Bachel shook the valley. Did she shake the valley though or is there a giant dragon under the Earth that moved in its slumber? Because I have theories. Well that's a good question. [11]
Thorn Flashbacks
The scenes where Thorn was being put in an arena when he was young, is it a vision or is it a real recollection of Murtagh? That was a real recollection. [19]
End Him Rightly
Was there a reference in murtagh to the pommel throwing technique? A certain character [Tornac] asked "Did you end him rightly?" And that made me remember the German fencing manual? Or was this just coincidence? There are no coincidences. @Skallagrim Ok, but like are we supposed to interpret this as a valid technique in-universe which Murtagh did? Or perhaps as a joke that the above mentioned character decided was appropriate to reference at that particular moment? It's both. It's a valid historical technique and also a joke within the HEMA community. Though not meant to be a joke between characters. [T]
Torture
I just finished Murtagh and one thing that sticks to my mind is how pointless / tame the torture scenes were. The torture was worse than you think. I just didn’t want to write it out in detail. [R]
My personal theory is that Bachel forced Murtagh to inflict the pain on his own body through the breath or invading his mind. I could see Bachel forcing Thorn to maul Murtagh, Or Murtagh to torment Thorn under the breath. It was even worse than either of those two options, sorry to say. [R]
Ithring
I just noticed; the Fractalverse logo & the center of [the Ithring] symbol, are similar. Shhh. [T]
Murtagh's Spell
Does the explosion from “compress air and gather light” come from Murtagh [focusing] a bunch of light into a spot, which would heat up the air and cause it to rapidly expand? Bingo. And if there was watemoisture at the target location (which there was), you'll get a steam explosion. [R]
One of the spells Murtagh cast in the book, I think the translation was "Compress the air and gather light." And then a big explosion happened. Was that lightning or was that a form of plasma that had become unstable? Superheated watemoisture expanding. Basically, a steam explosion. [T]
Murtagh Healing
You really put Murtagh through a lot. And it made me both smile and ache for him. I did put him through it. And one of the reasons is because although it was not his choice, he did some pretty unpleasant things and coming to terms with that was never going to be easy. And I think he will have an easier time of it moving forward now. He'll never have the life that Eragon has, but I think he has a chance at a more normal life now. As normal as he'll ever have a life. I wouldn't be surprised if he wakes up in a cold sweat, having some bad dreams for a couple of years, but I think he's on the path to healing. [19]
Nasuada controlling magic users
Given the new paradigm of Nasuada being a queen, how will she manage to have at the same time potent enough magicians and keeping control of magic in her realm as decades will go on in the future, especially since she's not a magician herself? That is the problem she's grappling with and it's a difficult one. I think the solution she's settled on at the moment is insufficient, with drugging people who don't want to join Du Vrangr Gata or don't want to swear this or that. So my thought is that now that Murtagh is spending time with her and Murtagh has had this experience of being controlled by Bachel's breath, he has a unique perspective on all of this, and perhaps that will help guide Nasuada's thoughts and approaches moving forward. But it's a problem. I've seen people criticize Nasuada's choices with how to deal with the magicians. And I'll happily agree it's not ideal, but it's also not ideal to have random people wandering around who can kill you with a word or who can slip into your mind and control you and you have no defense against that. It's a major major problem and no one would put up with it in the real world. If you knew that was a possibility and you suspected someone of being a magician, that's the sort of thing where witch hunts and magician hunts start actually making a lot of sense. Maybe not on an individual moral level, but from a societal standpoint, it starts making a lot of sense why you might kill those people.* [19]
Murtagh and Nasuada
What are Murtagh & Nasuada up to at this moment in time? Standing outside the small, barred room hidden behind her council chamber. [T]
Fractalverse
Sometimes I overthink things and end up confusing readers. Example: in Fractal Noise, I have my civilian characters use twelve-hour time. But they refer to the times using 24-hour terminology. So they'd say "Oh-nine-hundred" for 9am OR 9pm and rely on context for the listener to understand. Problem is, I never really explained what I was doing to readers. Lol. Ah well. Live and learn. [T]
Re-read To Sleep after reading Fractal Noise and somewhere in To Sleep it says the Great Beacon pulses ever 5.2 seconds but in Fractal Noise it says it's around 10 seconds. Is this a misprint? Yes. Was corrected in reprints. [T]
I have so many unanswered questions about Talos & the hole! Can we pleease get some lore on it. Lore upcoming in the next #Fractalverse books. So. Much. Lore. There's an entire dimension to the story that isn't yet apparent. [T]
If you think about it, the #Fractalverse has seven dimensions: three-subluminal, one luminal, and three superluminal. . . . I'm sure it's just coincidence. Why 3 subluminal and 3 superluminal? I thought the Tri-Space model was 3 realms? Yes, three realms, but superluminal and sub-luminal space are each 3D, while the luminal realm is just a membrane separating them. (Technically the membrane has an infinitesimal thickness to it, but that's splitting TEQs. For all practical purposes, it's 1D.) [T]
Fan Theories
I understood that some seeds had been planted in Murtagh, which made me wonder. Those seeds were even already in Brisingr. [23]
How far does the history of Alagaësia go, with all the associated myths and legends? You are now looking at the figurative tip of the iceberg. There is much more. There are fans who can now finally connect some of the clues I left in Eragon and my science fiction books. They suddenly get an inspiration and say: “Christopher doesn't play chess, he plays 4D chess.” But I have given away a lot of hints in my books, which I now have to do something with. In the coming books, both in Eragon and in my science fiction books, we will get more of the history, including things that I laid the foundation for years ago. So are both series connected? No comment. [23]
In the fan community there have been some very smart people who have been concocting some elaborate theories of what is actually going on in the World of Eragon and the Fractalverse. And they’re not right on everything but they’ve gotten pretty close in some very interesting ways. And all I'll say is that yes, I am doing a quite a lot of deep things and it isn't really apparent yet, and that's just my own fault, because I haven't written the next couple of books that will confirm what it is I'm actually doing on a deep level. So I'm looking forward to that. [32]
Have you seen any theories out there that have been correct? Yeah, a couple. There's a couple of really super smart fans in my fan base who've finally caught on to some of the very deep things I've been doing in the background of both my fantasy books and also my sci fi ones. And they've been like picking apart the world and going, wait a minute. Did Christopher mean this? Did he mean this? And nine times out of ten, the answer is yes. It's really hard to outsmart the crowd. There's so many smart people out there. And I love seeing that engagement. [33]
I have a bunch more theories on Giants but I'll save it for another post. You better write that post about the Giants. [R]
There are a lot of specific references to the moon in relation to the Ra'zac. Sheesh. All this talk of moons makes me wonder why/how Angela ended up being called Uluthrek. [R]
Fractal Noise has nearly no lore pertaining these theories. Ahem. All this talk about spirits and not a single mention of the 'angels' from FN? [R]
There gotta be something interesting at the top of Beors. Nobody has been to the top yet, not even the Riders. Pretty much little to zero breathing air at that point. Seems like the perfect place to have magical or immortal beings kinda just hanging out away from anything. Heh [R]
Right now no matter what way you swing it, we have issues in terms of time. Angela's presence makes things infinitely more complicated. Correct. I'm also guessing we're dealing with the very real issue of "Paolini is making up new shit as he goes", and is finding ways to retroactively make things fit together. Incorrect. (Or at least, mostly incorrect. :D) There's a major piece to the puzzle that I haven't shared yet. The next two Fractalverse books will clarify. [R]
Chapter 48
Nick Smith
Adventurer Level: 7
Human - American
I woke up feeling fully rested for the first time in quite a while. As I stretched away the remaining stiffness in my muscles, I found myself enjoying the fluffiness of the bedding against my skin. I hadn't been able to enjoy it much last night because I'd passed out right as my head hit the pillow. It had been an exhausting week of training and translating, but all that's over now. Well, the translating, at least. I'm sure Nash has something evil in mind for when we're on the road.
I let out a sigh when I realized I would have to be leaving this bed. The bed isn't even the best part about the inn, though. I'd been able to get a warm shower, a shave, and a haircut as well. I didn't have much beard to shave, of course, but the hairs under my nose and on my chin had been getting annoying. The shower was amazing, and very much needed. I'd become accustomed to my stench for the most part, but every now and again I'd get a whiff that made my eyes water.
Reluctantly, I left the softness of my bed and found my clothes. The Marfix Inn also had a laundry service, and I had taken full advantage of it to get my clothing and armor cleaned. On the wall near the door were two boxes that had conveyer belts inside them. In one box I found my clothes neatly folded alongside my armor, and in the other box I found the breakfast I had ordered. When we first began staying at the inn my meal orders had raised eyebrows, but now the staff was used to it. They even made recommendations of things that they thought might taste good together.
Normally I don't bother with a breakfast order and just pick something up from a stall, but I get one free meal a day during my stay and I wanted to use it on our last day here. The wonderful smell of the breakfast convinced me that I had made the right choice. There were two sides, one of thin meat strips that tasted like a mixture of canned ham and beef jerky, and a vegetable that looked like a dark green celery stick but tasted like asparagus. I'd been hesitant to try it at first due to my hatred of celery, but one of the elven chefs convinced me to give it a try. Now, I regret not ordering it sooner.
The entree was a mixture of eggs and meat, and I didn't know which animal either were from. This made me a little hesitant to try it, but the smell helped me fight off my doubts. I picked at my breakfast as I pulled on my clothes and armor. Unsurprisingly, the food was really good. Once I finished dressing myself, I moved my meal to the small table in the corner of the room and dug in.
My breakfast rapidly vanished, and once I was finished I leaned back and let the well-padded chair comfort me. I let out a burp, then reached into my nearly bulging coin purse and brought out a gold coin, placing it on the table next to the meal tray before turning my attention to putting my armor on. Once I squeezed into everything and all the straps were tied, I took one last look around.
The room itself was tastefully decorated with wooden walls and engraved stone trim. They had used a light colored wood which seemed to glow when the curtains were open. The window was able to be opened, which wasn't something I had seen in many other places. There were also some well done paintings depicting some exciting scenery, like a man arm wrestling a dragon and a mage casting fireball.
The bathroom had a toilet, sink, and the aforementioned shower. Even without any additional decorations, it was the fanciest bathroom I'd every personally seen. The toilet had a footrest and the shower had a seat, both of which made it easy to relax while taking care of business. I could see why Renv's coworker said some people use the inn as their vacation destinations. My entire stay had felt like one. I felt a small pang of sadness when I realized how much I'm going to miss these luxuries, but comforted myself with the thought that we'll probably find another Marfix Inn during our travels.
With another small sigh, I turned to the door and opened it to find Nash and Yulk waiting outside. Nash was holding his fist up as if he were about to knock. The three of us stared at each other awkwardly for a moment.
"Oh good, you're up," Yulk grinned.
"Yep, he sure is," Nash nodded. "That's good, we can get on the road right away. Come on."
I gave my room one final glance before I followed my brothers-by-adoption out of the inn. The staff bid us farewell as we left, urging us to visit again soon. We began to head to the place where Imlor had the cart set up when I spotted Regent Oakmor dashing our way. I debated whether or not to start running, but he caught up to us before I could make up my mind.
"Hello boys," he said with a beaming smile. "Glad I caught you before you left."
"Why's that, sir?" Nash asked. "Your business with Nick is done, right? You already paid us and everything, your highness."
"Oh yes, yes, don't worry. I have no further jobs for you," Oakmor laughed. "The reason I wanted to catch you is to let you know that we would normally throw a goodbye celebration, on account of Nick awakening our monarch and everything. Unfortunately, we can't due to... Well... Critical matters of state that must be addressed immediately."
"That's alright, sir. I understand," I said.
"Good, good. I didn't want you to think we were terrible hosts or anything. Anyway, the next time you visit Bolisir I'd ask that you send a message first so we can properly plan a thank you celebration."
"We already had a feast. Surely that counts, your majesty," Yulk added.
"Actually, the feast was specifically to celebrate the return of His Highness King Yssinirath," the elf shrugged. "Royalty get their own party. Plus, combining celebrations is tacky. No, even if it must be delayed for the moment, I am required to insist that we do a proper celebration for Nick's contribution as soon as we are able."
After a bit more back and forth on the merits of such a celebration, we relented to Oakmor's request. Or demand disguised as a request, rather. Once we agreed, he merrily sent us on our way. People waved as we passed, which was a welcome change from the awkward stares that we got when we first arrived. They actually seemed happy when I waved back, too, which made me feel good. People had been friendly like this back home, and I hadn't realized how much I missed it. Before long, we found Imlor packing up his cart.
"Hi Imlor," I said as we approached.
"Hey guys, you ready to hit the road?" he asked.
"Yep," Nash said as he grabbed a heavy-looking sack from the gnome and carried it into the cart.
"Very much so," Yulk agreed as he climbed into the cart after Nash. "While I've enjoyed our stay, I'd very much like to check the mail to see if mother sent anything. I've been keeping her updated, but have told her to send her replies to Kirkena because we didn't know for sure how long we'd be in Bolisir."
I took one last look around the city built within the trees. Renv had said his farewells yesterday because his uncle was taking him to see the rest of his family. It ended up being a bit of a twist of fate. Instead of Renv seeing us off, we had seen him off. However, it appeared that someone else may want to see us off. The someone that was moving our way at an unnaturally fast pace.
"Uh... hey, guys?" I pointed at the figure racing toward us.
In the time it took for Nash and Yulk to turn their heads to look, the unidentifiable figure got close enough for me to figure out that it was a certain female vampire. The next thing I knew Olmira the Eternal was standing beside me, carrying a duffel bag and looking at Yulk. I questioned my sanity when I realized that she didn't look like she'd been running at all. She was breathing normally and her hair wasn't even out of place in the slightest. The hell kind of product does she use?
"Hi Olmira," Yulk's smile beamed. "Come to see us off?"
"And to chastise you," She placed her hands on her hips. "It isn't proper for a gentleman to fail to bid a lady goodbye, Yulk. Even when he's the one doing the leaving."
Yulk's smile faded, "Ah, I see. You're right, I apologize. I beg your forgiveness, milady."
Yulk stood and bowed, while Nash and I gave the two of them a befuddled look.
"I'll forgive you on the condition that you allow me to join your party," Olmira smiled, showing the briefest hint of fang.
"Really? Why do you wanna travel with us?" Nash asked.
"Well, the Regent is now advisor to the king. An advisor having an advisor is a bit much," She chuckled. "Plus, the king already has an immortal magical advisor. A djinn by the name of... um... Relph, I think it was? Yssinirath retrieved him yesterday. So, I am out of a job, haven't travelled in well over a century, and can't help but wonder what sort of hijinks my favorite pupil is going to get into with this human here."
As she was explaining herself, I turned to look back the way she had came. It had to be at least a half a mile from where I had initially spotted her, and it was a decent uphill gradient, as well. She'd run that distance in less than ten seconds without looking the least bit phased. And to top it off, she's a magic user. She could be pretty helpful in a fight.
'I suggest we bring her along,' Ten said. 'Her relationship with Yulk leads me to believe that she has a vested interest in helping us, and she would be a powerful ally.'
'Quit reading my mind,' I replied.
'I can't read your mind without you directing your thoughts at me. Yet. I was simply inferring based the context and your current gaze.'
"It would be an honor to travel with you, Lady Olmira," Yulk said.
"Wait a minute," Nash interrupted. "What are you going to do about blood?"
Olmira held up a jug and shook it, "I'm bringing some with me. Despite my youthful appearance, I'm an elder vampire. I don't need to feed as much as younger vampires do, so this is well over a years supply. Plus I can visit a blood-keeper if I need to top up."
"Are you royalty or nobility or something?" I asked.
"Pardon?" She gave me a confused look. "Oh, because of Yulk. No, I'm not. Not anymore. I was a noblewoman before I was turned, but my title was revoked due to my conversion to vampirism. Immortals aren't allowed to be nobles in Eldravia."
"Eldravia?"
"A nation to the south of Bolisir and the Unified Chiefdoms," Yulk interjected.
"Yes. Eldravia is known for its wine and multi-species elected monarchy. Yulk previously learned of my noble heritage and insists upon calling me by my former honorifics," Olmira explained. "It used to annoy me, but I've long since grown used to it."
"Oh okay, good," I laughed. "I didn't want to have to walk on eggshells the whole journey."
"Anyway, I'm obviously fine with Olmira travelling with us," Yulk grinned. "Are there any objections?"
"Nope," I said.
"I guess not," Nash shrugged.
"It'll be good to have another guard, I suppose," Imlor chimed in.
"It's unanimous, then. Allow me, milady," Yulk stood and offered his hand to Olmira.
She took his hand and climbed into the cart, taking a seat next to Yulk. I climbed up after her and took my seat next to Nash.
"Let our hopefully-uninteresting journey begin," Imlor said, turning back toward the hnarses.
The carts began to move and I watched the as the city that is constantly shaded by trees slowly shrank into the distance. Once we cleared those trees, my eyes stung trying to adjust to all the extra sunlight. We travelled for about an hour in silence before my curiosity got the better of me.
"So what's Eldravia like, Olmira?" I asked.
"I really wouldn't know what it's like these days," the vampire smiled sadly. "It's been well over a century since I left, and I haven't had reason to return. Nor do I seek out news of my homeland. I can tell you what it used to be like, though."
"Yes, please."
"Alright. Eldravia had massive tracts of land dedicated to growing fruit. Trees, bushes, and vines littered the landscape. These fruits were used to make all sorts of alcohol, but wine was by far the most popular. Most noble houses either directly owned or were heavily invested in wineries and the farms that supplied them."
"A nation of drunks?" Nash asked.
Olmira laughed, "Actually, most of their wine ended up exported. Eldravia doesn't have much in the way of metallic resources, so trade was important to make up the deficit. The quality of our wine made certain that it fetched a high price. So much so that it actually aided in our diplomacy, which in turn ended up being crucial for our national defense."
"What do you mean?"
"I'll give you an example that happened before I was born. Plimorno, one of the nations that border Eldravia, declared war as part of an expansion campaign. They won easily, but the people of Eldravia stopped making wine in protest. Once the wine stopped flowing other neighboring nations, including the Unified Chiefdoms, declared war on Plimorno to force it to give Eldravia back its independence. However, this war didn't get very far because the citizens of Plimorno revolted against their queen. She was executed along with most of their nobility, and Eldravia became independent once again."
"Wow," I whistled. "People really like wine, I guess. So you said Eldravia's led by an elected monarchy? How does that work?"
"A multi-species elected monarchy," she corrected me. "Essentially, nobility is decided by influence rather than by blood or species. Whoever can wave the most gold around becomes nobility, which results in their family also becoming nobility and forming a noble house. It is from these houses that candidates for the throne are chosen, and the general populace votes on which candidate becomes king or queen. These monarchs decide upon the laws of the land and rule until death or they are deposed."
"Deposed?"
"Yes. If a monarch doesn't live up to expectations, the noble houses have the right to dethrone them. They actually get together once per year to vote on whether or not to do so. It takes a four-fifths majority vote to get a king or queen off their throne."
"Doesn't the monarch put up a fight?"
"They don't have their own military forces, so they have to rely on the forces of their house. Assuming their house didn't vote to dethrone them, of course. Either way, any military they could muster would be heavily outnumbered, and they would likely face execution for their efforts."
"I see. So back to the noble houses, how do they become noble?"
"If a monarch takes note of someone's accomplishments, they elect them as a candidate for nobility. The populace, including the other nobles, then vote on whether or not this individual becomes a noble. If they do, they become the leader of a noble house comprised of their family members. If they don't, then they go about their business until next time."
"Sorry to interrupt," Imlor said. "If we're gonna have lunch today, now's the best time to do it."
"Alright, let's take a break, then," Nash replied.
Imlor nodded, then pulled the cart off of the road. We all climbed off and stretched our legs, then had a quick meal of dried meats and water. Except for Olmira, who didn't eat or drink. Once he finished his piece of road jerky, Nash walked up to me with an evil grin. The grin alone told me what was coming, and I felt a familiar dread begin to well up within my chest.
"Time for training, Nick."
2024.05.01 14:19 n00bgod3300 Unicorn Overlord Class Theorycrafting
Unicorn Overlord Class Theorycrafting
Hello, Reddit!
I've been having a blast playing Unicorn Overlord, and now 365+ hours into the game.
I've seen a lot of threads talking about what DLC classes they'd want to see, or what to see in a sequel. I've also seen discussion talking about what looks like cut classes from the UO artbook.
Given that, I wanted to try my hand at making some classes. Some are inspired by the aforementioned Reddit posts (links provided) and others are purely from my own whimsy. I've tried to strike a blend of new skills and existing ones that currently exist only in items. I struggled with some more than others, so I'd love to hear what other ideas/variants could be made from these. I had a lot of trouble in particular coming up with distinct valour skills; so any insights there would be greatly appreciated.
Warning: Very Long Post!
EDIT: It seems some of my formatting has gone a little wonky, sorry for the walls of text.
Any advice for clearing up the formatting a bit is greatly appreciated.
The following is the list of classes I've tried my hand at:
2024.04.30 03:49 Yarzeda2024 I finally finished all 17 of Kanzaka's novels and most of the Slayers media in English. Here are some thoughts -- mostly about the novels. (SPOILERS)
I cut my teeth on the Slayers in the late 90s/early 00s with the big three of Slayers, Slayers Next, and Slayers Try. Then I went through all of the Lina-and-Naga adventures across the movies and OVAs before dropping out of the fandom because there just wasn't much left. I skipped out on the Tokyopop translations of novels 1 through 8 when I heard that they were A) not very accurate and B) incomplete. I also heard about Revolution/Evolution-R, but I just never got around it.
Then I caught COVID in March and had a lot of time on my hands while I spent about ten days straight laid up in bed. I started a massive marathon of all the old Slayers content I was familiar with (still holds up), Revolution/Evolution-R (fun to see the gang again but a step down from Next/Try), Hourglass of Falces (awful), Medieval Mayhem (great), Knight of Aqualord (mediocre), Light Magic (cut and fun but ultimately forgettable), and the Rev/Evo-R manga adaptations (start off pretty predictable before suddenly getting really good once it starts adding new wrinkles to Lina, Zel, Duclis, Pokota, etc.).
Then I got around to the J-Novel Club translation of Kanzaka's 17 novels. Great stuff. Here are some scattered thoughts:
-I love Lina's sassy, irreverent inner monologue. The anime does a pretty good job of translating this to her dialogue, but it's still something I would have liked to see carried over in short bursts of narration.
-The side effect of so much Lina is so much less of everyone else (except Gourry, but more on him later). For instance, Zelgadis and Amelia become Ra-Tilt factories by the end of the Gaav/Phibrizzo arc. That's pretty much all they contribute past a certain point. They're barely characters.
-It's funny to see how Lina and Gourry go through additional party members like tissues in the novels. Lantz, Aria, Dilarr, Jade, Luke, Mileena, Milgazia, Memphys, and Alaina are an incredibly mixed bag of utility and likability; but it was nice to get such a wide range of voices and perspectives. Comparing and contrasting over-accomplished adventurers like Lina and Gourry with total normies like Lantz and Aria really puts into perspective how special they are, but it was also fun to see them being totally blown away by the two heavyweights, Milgazia and Mephy. Having watched the anime, I thought I had the Slayers formula down to a science: The core four of Lina/Gourry/Zel/Amelia with Xellos popping in and out as a frienemy who alternates between helping and hurting and an extra party member or three to round out the team. Nope. The novels have no such sacred cows. It is the Lina and Gourry buddy cop (buddy mercenary?) adventure, and everyone else is along for the ride.
-Poor Gourry. The guy is scandalously under-written in the show. Even when I was watching Try the first time, I thought it was weird that the guy who inherited the Sword of Light didn't have more to say in the season all about the Sword of Light. Then he just gives it away to Sirius? We couldn't have had even one episode about him wrestling with the Sword's legacy and laying the groundwork for his eventual decision? He's an absolute star in the novels. He's not very brainy in any medium, but I came away with a much stronger sense that he's selectively oblivious rather than the kind of dumb you get from room temperature IQ. He simply chooses his (mental) battles and puts his priorities in places that Lina does not. He knows that Lina handles the magic and planning stuff, so he plays to his strengths and sticks to his animalistic instincts (as her narration constantly reminds us) to pick out what's wrong -- whether that's seeing an ambush ahead of time or perceiving some emotional turmoil that Lina is trying to hide.
-The novel battle scenes were pretty hit or miss for me. They are incredibly repetitive. How many times does Lina detect malice to tip her off to a sneak attack? How many times does she use a Lighting spell like a flashbang to stun her enemies? How many times are we going to see a demon slip away from a big spell by casting off a small fraction of their astral body to take the hit while their main body is unharmed? Lina even calls it something like "the old demonic lizard's tail trick" after having seen it so many times. But it makes sense. A lot of those tricks work out for Lina and her enemies. If it's not broke, don't fix it. Still, it might have been nice to get more than the usual combo of teleportation blinks, spears of light, and shockwaves from the latest demon-of-the-week. So many fight scenes feel like they started with a template. It gets old very, very quickly. The best fights were the ones where the demon has some funky, unique ability that Lina and friends have to outthink and outmaneuver.
-Sylphiel being introduced as Zel's temporary, off-screen adventure buddy was funny for how unexpected it was. They both have something against Copy Rezo, but it's the most random collection of characters.
-Eris playing the part of an incompetent bounty hunter was a trip, too.
-Lina learning Astral Vine in the second half of the novels to power up her melee and to give Gourry an extra edge now that he no longer has a magic sword was a great bit of understated storytelling. She wants to kill demons faster now that she is on their radar, but she presumably wants to keep Gourry both useful and safe at the same time and in her own way.
-Rubia's comeback in novel 15 came out of nowhere, and I loved everything about it. It's a great thematic counterpoint to Luke's decision about what to do with yourself when you are the one left behind, and the whole detour into the greenhouse was hysterical. Readers like me really needed that moment of lightness, and it really reinforced the notion that life goes on even when it feels like it's over. The animation team working on Next had no way of knowing, but killing her off will forever feel like a missed opportunity.
-I really, truly did not like the way Phil and Wizer were introduced in the novels. As users on this sub helpfully pointed out, they both started in Slayers Special and were later imported to the main novels. It feels like watching a Marvel movie or TV series, where you are going to be lost if you haven't done your "homework." Franchises are fine, but homework storytelling has never been my style. I would much rather have those small, passing, funny-if-you-get-it references to Naga than full-blown character reunions with people I, as a reader, am meeting for the first time. It's especially galling when Lina's history with Wizer and adventure in Ruvinagald comes back to haunt her in such a major way in novel 14. It's harder for me to buy into the one-sided blood feud when I have so little context.
-Rod served his purpose well enough, but Zangulus is the superior master swordsman/battle junkie rival to Gourry. Martina has absolutely no basis in the novels, but she gets a thumbs up, too. Man, Next was so good.
-While Lantz served his own purpose as a "working man" adventurer who isn't up to Lina and Gourry's level, freaking out at the flesh curse and needing some extra firepower make himself useful in Sairaag, I'm totally fine with him being one of those forgotten novel characters. He's introduced being a sleaze to Lina, and he jokes about raping Eris when he finds her passed out in a bush. Go and stay gone.
-The novels as a whole are a little too eager to tell rape jokes. It is mostly phased out as it goes along, but I really did not need to read about two thugs debating the pros and cons of raping Lina or Lina getting information out of a burglar by pretending Gourry is a gay predator.
-By the same token, I don't feel the least bit bad about Zolf getting incinerated. Sucks that you lost your friend, Zel, but your friend was a guy who took turns going down the list of every guy he knows and trying to convince each and every one of them that it's time to sexually torture Lina. A similar joke was in the anime with Nunsa the fishman, but it was a tasteless and blessedly brief one-and-done. The novel goes into excruciating detail about why each guy on the team can't or won't play ball with Zolf's sick little game. Rot in Hell, Zolf. Pick better friends, Zel. (At least Rodimus seemed like a decent guy.)
-Speaking of Zel's old posse: Dilgear came back for the Sairaag/Copy Rezo arc, as he should have in the first season. The last we see of the guy, he's swearing revenge on the team. Why not bring him back in the anime, too? Sure, he doesn't stick around for long or accomplish much even in novel 3, but at least Kanzaka thought to bring him back.
-On a lighter note: It was great seeing Aria's growth as a sorceress in the short time we know her. She went from saying her magic is better than nothing to showing off some spells stunts that she had clearly picked up from Lina. I get the sense that she would have been a magical monster if she stuck around.
-I wish we got more insights into Luke and Mileena, such as how they met (how does an all-business shaman meet and halfway-reform a professional assassin with the setting's version of the Devil sleeping his soul?) or how they became such a well-oiled machine with their combination spells, but it's actually a pretty important character beat for Lina to realize how little she knows either one of them. Kanzaka really succeeded in making both Lina and the reader wish we had more time with them.
-On the other hand, it undercuts the notion that they had this great connection to Luke, and he would set the stage for them to kill him. Is he the friend you could not save or is he someone you wish could have called a friend? I guess there is a middle path -- a more distant friend that you wish you could have gotten to know better when you had the chance -- but it still comes off a little bit muddled.
-I'm still not sure if Luke's magic sword was one-of-a-kind after we see him using a bunch of other edged weapons in 14 that can also hold a magic spell. Did Luke find an entire set of special swords with that property? Was that an ability of his that he already possessed and he only pretended that his main sword had that power? Did he find a magic sword and reverse-engineer the ability to store one spell at a time in other blades? Not a huge thing but I found it a little odd
-The prevalence of madmen cooking up chimeras and other magical fusions makes me wonder if they were all pen pals with each other. It's incredibly rampant. The novels already gave us the thread of Sherra's demon sword spreading chaos and creatures, but it might have been nice to string the rest of them together a little more strongly with something like Lavas mentioning that he discovered one of Rezo's old chimera labs. Or insinuate that a character like Sherra may have been feeding Rezo information in order to grease the wheels of his descent into villainy and Shab's awakening. I know novel 1 is written as a single story and only later ballooned into a series, but it might have been nice to get some more play between Rezo and the demons even if it is after the fact. The anime went so far as to imply Rezo was in contact with Phibrizzo or at least researched his style of magic in Revolution/Evolution-R with the green stasis crystals and the Hellmaster's Jar. Wouldn't it be interesting to reveal that someone was pulling on that particular thread?
-As much as I would love to see some of the novel content adapted to screen some day, I just don't see how you could preserve some of the chimera/fusion body horror and the purely tragic elements in the way more light-hearted anime. People already complain about Try being too dark for tackling something as heavy as the ancient dragon genocide in their goofy fantasy comedy anime. The end of the Crimson City arc and the Selentia arcs would be enough to trigger total meltdowns about how it's not really Slayers anymore because Slayers is supposed to be fun. We're never getting the Luke and Mileena story arc in any other format, are we?
-But novel 16 could totally be a movie. (Just remove the lines about Mephy and the Zenefa armor.) It is mostly self-contained, not as dark as a lot of the stuff in 9 through 15, brings back the classic lineup of the core four plus the token newbie and a Xellos cameo, caps off with a big flashy fight scene that would probably be fun as hell to see in glossy bid budget animation, etc. Sure, it's more Zanaffar when we've already seen a bunch of them, but it's actually a minor plot point that the elven armors play by different rules. They could get away with it.
-Novel 17 feels so weird and distinct from everything else, and I mean that in the best way. Kanzaka really thought about how to make this neck of the woods feel alien to Lina and Gourry. Lina worrying about how to read the local script, whether or not they will eat something poisonous, how hard it would be to find a map, currency conversion, etc. Great stuff. It's also funny to see that 17 seems to be setting up a bunch of smug, holier-than-thou dragons with questionable moral fiber as the major villains of this new story. Starting to smell a lot like Slayers Try in here, which is funny when some of the crankier fans like to say that Try doesn't count.
-The novels and anime are pretty evenly matched in their pros and cons for the most part. For every one thing the novels do better, I could come right back and say there is something the animation does better, and back and forth and up and down over and over again. But one thing really stands out to me. Slayers Next absolutely blows novel 8 out of the water for how it handles the end of the Phibrizzo/Giga Slave story. The grand finale of Slayers Next is my vote for the high water mark of the entire franchise, so novel 8 was probably always doomed. Credit to the animation production team for pulling that tour de force out of their hat. I'm normally a "source material is sacred" kind of fan, but Slayers as a whole is a fascinating compare-and-contrast piece as I slowly learned what was cut, condensed, or rearranged in the translation from page to screen.
-But I will say that it makes the Lord of Nightmares out to be a more menacing, insidious character. Next gave me the impression that she is something of a literal genie, giving Lina the power she asked for (even if it cost her, which was part of her wish) and Phibrizzo the destruction he wanted. The Lord of Nightmares even appears to respond to Gourry's pure wish to have Lina restored. She is an overwhelming but ultimately neutral force. Novel 8, on the other hand, seems to suggest that she's proud enough and petulant enough to annihilate Phibrizzo for his disrespect and only accidentally released Lina from her hold. Granted, that's just Lina taking a shot in the dark and making her best guess with the completely unprecedented event of the lord of all creation coming down to possess your body. She could be wrong. Still, 8 makes L look like a cruel and moody god. Slayers Next's concept of L is something that would destroy the world because it is simply her nature as Chaos itself. Novel 8's concept of L strikes me as a being that would destroy the world because it offends her. Maybe the Monsters/demons/Mazoku were right. Maybe she does desire a return for all creation to Chaos.
-I would kill for Novel 18.
2024.04.25 17:20 TieDar [FN] Tales Of Leafily
(NSFW Warning Violence and Strong Language) This is the first part of what I plan to be an ongoing series of short stories. Some stories will span multiple parts some will only be 1 part. Thanks for taking the time to read my first posted story, hope you enjoy!
Part 1/3:
The forest was humid, the air thick as our hero found himself waking. His back was sore with more knots in it then the tree he was meditating against, he looked around and seen he was in the middle of no where nothing around in sight. "That’s weird I could of swore the city was just a short walk west, must of gone farther in the woods then I thought last night". He stood adjusted his sword and pack and began walking towards a town that was now on another plane of existence.
As he wandered through the forest, he pulled his trusty pipe from his sword's sheath. He packed a bowl of his family's weed and held the pipe to his lips, the pipe ignited with a puff of magic, and he begin to smoke and walk. He said aloud, "Maybe that city was to the east, I'm so bad with direction for a ranger", he sighed disappointed in himself. He checked the forest floor for tracks, signs of travel but just animals print in the soft dirt. "God's Leafily you sure got yourself lost again; seems like every other morning I wake up somewhere different". He stopped to tap his pipe out against a tree and have a small snack.
As he pecked away at his snack, he began to tighten the dyed green leather straps on his armor, his large ears flicked trying to keep the bugs away from his thick dark green hair. Suddenly in the distance he heard the sound of steel on steel. He started to run in the direction of the fighting.
As he got closer, he seen a human clad in armor with a great sword fighting off a pack of Goblins. As he got to the tree line just out of view of the combatants, he heard the sound of a spell being cast, that was when he seen the mage in a dark purple cloak with a bright purple dress underneath behind the fighter shoot off a fireball taking out 2 Goblins. A Goblin got underneath the fighter’s sword and stabbed him in the belly, as he stumbled back grabbing the wound. A woman in white robes standing next to the Mage held up her staff and plead to her God, a white light came from his wound as it closed.
The Goblins closing in almost 30 strong as more came from the woods to Leafily's left, but then across the clearing a dwarf in a heavy plate with a large shield came sprinting in giving a deep battle cry. A girl smaller than the Dwarf in all black leather armor leaped out behind him striking a Goblin down and retreated back to hiding. Leafily was reaching for his sword when he heard a great roar from where the dwarf and rogue came from, and a large brown bear burst through the brush crushing a Goblin's skull between his mighty jaws and flinging the body across the clearing. The human seemed to fight harder now that his reinforcement came.
Leafily gazed at the battle before him wondering if he should join in or leave them to their fight, when he saw a Goblins creeping out of the woods behind the mage and priestess. He drew his sword and in a puff of smoke he appeared behind the magic user's not 5 ft from the creeping Goblin and slashed him down telling them, "watch your back" the mage turned and her hood fell from her head blond hair glistened in the soft sun light he seen large Elven ears not as large as his maybe an inch or 2 shorter, she had fine pale skin and she looked him up and down she scoffed. "Filthy forest elf I do not need your assistance" she said in a stuck-up voice "bad enough I have to rely on humans, a dwarf, and a halfling but another filthy lower elf I will not stand for!" Leafily paid her no mind a lot of elves looked down on him for his lifestyle, but he cared not, he cut down more Goblins working his way with the human towards the dwarf and bear.
As the number of Goblins fell, they began to retreat. The fighter and dwarf yelled in unison "Run you green cowards or you will die with your friends" as the bear roared and turned into a slender elf with skin like bark. Leafily tried to slink into the bushes after the green coward’s line, when the priestess called to him stopping him. "Excuse me I want to thank you for stopping that Goblin, my name is Lee-Andra I am a priestess of Pelor I'm sorry for Tauriel she's not a fan of anything that's not a high elf and really not a fan of people covered in dirt". Leafily looked confused he didn't think he was that filthy he had bathed in a river only yesterday. "I'm sorry, do I smell" he asked her confused. She giggled "no look at you all caked in dirt your face and hands are green were you trying to blend into the forest to avoid the goblins"? Leafily began to laugh "no no no, I'm an Eladrin an elf of the Feywild my skin is green". He said pulling his armor up showing his green belly. Her eyes widened as Leafily caught a glimpse of the shocked face of Tauriel, who had clearly overheard his comment.
At this point the human and the dwarf were joined arm and arm in celebration of their victory. "Man it was getting close just before you showed up" the fighter said. "Where did you find that green guy, he really helped clean up those little pests” the dwarf asked. The fighter laughed "I don't even know he just appeared by the girls and started kicking ass". The halfling in all black came out from the bushes and pulling a large sack from her belt she called out, "Let's have a drink to celebrate our new friend the Anti-Goblin". The human and Dwarf cried out "THE ANTI-GOBLIN" holding their hands high in the air. Leafily bowed and said, "Thank you all for the kind words my name is Leafily Greenbud".
The adventuring party gathered around him, patting him on the back and thanking him they offered him a bottle of something to drink and he politely declined. Drew his pipe from the sheath he began to pack a bowl.
Lee-Andra began to introduce the party members. "This human man is our fighter we call him Bronco". The man held his great sword up with a single hand. He looked as if he was flexing every muscle, his long black hair ran down his back. "You kill Goblins almost as good as i do" he said in a cocky yet seemingly joking voice. "The Halfling in all black is our Rogue her name is Daeatrix". She waved from a distance as she was collecting whatever could be worth something from the battlefield. She was completely clad in black but from the eye slits he could see she was young. "The Tanned elf is a druid his name is Finnean, we call him Fin though". Finnean looked Leafily up and down, sniffing at him. "You don’t smell like any Fey I've ever met before" he said in a confused ton, his hair was a dark brown and he wore casual clothes carrying a quarterstaff. "The dwarf is my mentor, a Paladin of Pelor, his name is Gremdol". The Dwarf hung his mace from his belt and held out his hand to shake Leafily's, when Leafily grabbed his hand to shack it the dwarf pulled him in close. He had thick brown hair that was graying fast, deep intense brown eye glared into Leafily's bright bloodshot eye. "Maybe he is the answer to your prayers Lee-andra". The clearing was suddenly filled with a thick tension, the party stopped what they were doing and stared at Leafily. Tauriel chimed in, "Right can we figure this all out not surrounded my corpses". She looked at Daeatrix "are you almost done ransacking the dead"? Daeatrix put a dagger from the ground into her belt and said, "you will thank me for collecting all this when we sell it all and use it to pay our stay for the trip!"
Lee-Andre looked at Leafily with a concerned face, "I truly hope you will join us there's a town about an hour or so up the road we are breaking there for a few days we can fill you in on what's happening". Leafily shrugged casually, "I woke up in this forest starting to think I didn't go to sleep in this forest, but I have no where else to go and nothing else to do, sooooooo why not". He chuckled and began to pull his pouch of weed from his belt, after the bowl was packed, he held it to his lips and once again with the puff of magic it lit he breathed deep and blew a large cloud almost enveloping the party as it wafted through the air and began to dissipate. Lee-Andre and Tauriel choked on the cloud, and as Leafily was beginning to apologize Tauriel stopped dead in her tracks and made her way behind him. "I may have to tolerate you, but I don't need to tolerate your bad habits, keep that horrid scent away from me". She walked about 10 feet behind him with her nose up in the air.
Bronco was trying to convince Finnean to let him ride Fin into combat. "Come on imagine the carnage we could cause" Bronco argued. "I've traveled with you a while now and I've seen you on mount I will have to pass". Lee-Andra and Gremdol where walking at the front of the party talking to them selves. It seemed as if Daeatrix had vanished, then he heard the faint rustling of the bush's and seen her sneaking along side them.
Leafily smiled to the sky, the bright sun shown down from the blue sky as large puffy clouds passed over head. "Have another" Leafily said to himself has he blew a large smoke cloud up into the sky. The travel was uneventful, but the walking seemed to pass faster with company.
As they came to a moderately large village. They found them selves at an inn and tavern. Leafily put his water skins on the counter and handed the bar keep 2 silver pieces, "could you fill these with fresh water please". The barkeep looked the silver over "Never seen silver with these marking, but it looks like silver and that's all that really matters". He took them into his pocket and picked up the skins to fill them, the rest of the party ordered drinks Lee-Andra and Fin got water, Gremdol ordered a pint of the house mead, Bronco ordered 2 (that was weird), Tauriel ordered their finest wine. When the barkeep turned to fill the skins Leafily seen in the corner of his eye, Daeatrix crouched behind the counter taking bottles from the shelf. He shook his head and placed a few more coins on the counter for the bottles.
He sat with the rest of the party they had a map spread across the table, one of Broncos empty goblet was holding down a corner and he was chugging down the second for the other side. He slammed it down, "alright I'll get 2 more for the last corners." When Bronco left the table Gremdol looked at Leafily and said, "we didn't ask him to do this he has a bit of a problem." Bronco returned already finishing his third with 2 more in his other hand. "I *BURP* got 1 for myself to enjoy." He began to drain the fourth, Gremdol shook his head.
"Alright, Leafily I'm sure you noticed all the goblins while you where in the woods" Gremdol asked him. Leafily shook his head, "like I said, I woke up in this forest this morning the first thing I seen besides trees is you lot". Lee-Andra looked confused, "did you smoke yourself stupid before bed and don't remember wandering in, you must have been lucky to not encounter any Goblins they have been plaguing this land for a few years now". Leafily sighed "no no no, I don't think this is the plain I fell asleep on. It happens every once in awhile. Not hundred percent sure how or why but I just keep exploring".
"Interesting, maybe Pelor is using you like an Avatar" Gremdol said stroking his thick beard. Leafily shrugged holding his pipe to his lips and taking a deep haul. Lee-Andra chimed in "the world is getting more dangerous by the day Goblins roaming in large packs is not common. Goblins are usually independent creatures and only end up living in large numbers because there is no where else to go, they normally only keep a small close circle that work together. What is happening in our plane?" Leafily blew a large cloud of smoke to the ceiling "Goblins are different in every plan I've been too; you get similar Goblins on different planes and yes most of the time they only work in small numbers like you said. I've seen Goblins that formed whole cities and civilizations but normally the key differences is usually Maglubiyet". Everyone at the table looked at Leafily. Except for Tauriel she was sitting perfectly straight one leg crossed over the other facing away from everyone eyes closed head turned up, she said "even you religious types don't even know the God of Goblins, I've read of him it's believed he was the God that created the Goblins but they lack the intelligence to understand what a God is".
Lee-Andra began to dig through her large pack and pulled out a massive old book, papers yellowing leather cover cracked and faded. Leafily was just able to make out a title on the book through all the wear it was written in a language he had never seen before. "What is that now" Leafily asked. "It's an old Tome that list all the God's around at the great beginning, the language is lost but I've been able to translate some of it. I think I understand this God better". She turned to a page and pointed at a what looked like a picture of a large black skinned Goblin with well toned arms and large teeth and claws. "So it seems after he created all the Gablinoid creatures the other God's seen how atrocious they were, so they attacked Maglubiyet and locked him away from creating more creatures and aiding them" Lee-Andra said confidently. "He must have busted out or something cuz clearly he must be helping them work together" Finnean added. Gremdol looked at the table with worry clearly on his face. "I guess we have no choice now. Looks like we are going into a Goblin lair to see what's really happening, enjoy tonight and by Pelor's light may it not be our last" Gremdol added sternly.
Bronco slammed his hands on the table laying down 5 silver. "Alrighty then let's have some fun and make some money. 5 silver to whoever can beat me in an arm wrestling competition if you lose you buy me a drink", he shouted throughout the bar. A few large men stood some obviously farmers and some other travelers, they formed a line as the first guy sat down and took Bronco's hand.
The man began to struggle against Bronco pushing so hard his face was red, Bronco didn't even look like he was trying. Then Bronco turned his wrist slightly left and the man was immediately slammed against the table.
Bronco made his way through the contestants and Leafily was watching rather impressed, as a half giant women sat across from him her hand easily twice the size of Bronco's. She began to push and Bronco’s hand started to go down he quickly pushed himself back to the middle and the two began to strain faces turning purple but Bronco managed to turn his wrist and pin her.
Out of breath he said with a cocky smile "Wow you are easily the strongest person to ever try me, I'll have an Ale". She went to get it with an angry look on her face. Leafily put his pipe away took a drink of water and sat across from Bronco holding his arm out to try. "Wooow I think the new guy smoked himself stupid, this twiggy ranger thinks he stands a chance" Bronco said with full drunken bravado. He took Leafily's hand and tried to turn his wrist, but Leafily was locked in place, Bronco pushed harder and harder with all his might struggling against the twiggy ranger face turning a dark purple. With his free hand Leafily gestured like his was turning a baseball cap around, turned his wrist slightly to the left and Bronco went down so hard the table flipped with him. "I'm sorry I forget my strength with this damn thing on" Leafily laughed patting a large cummerbund, it had a circular steel plate with the symbol of a cloud and lightning.
Tauriel's eyes widened "where in the 9 hells did you get a belt of storm giants’ strength" she said in shock. "I got a few treasures that can help us" Leafily said confidently as he put the table back up right. Noticing Bronco was passed out Gremdol tossed Leafily a key saying, "you can share that room with him then since you shouldn't have a problem carrying him there" he passed a key to Lee-Andra and then looked at Finnean "so the girls will bunk together and i guess i will share my room with you". Leafily tossed Gremdol a gold coin "for the room I'm gonna get some rest" he said picking Bronco up with one hand and putting him over his should, and with that everyone made their ways to their rooms for the night.
2024.04.23 23:09 Frodil Optimal Growth Types for all recruitable classes
Edits: I have been actively making some changes to the list following some of the comments
Edit: Thanks to all the users who collaborated with this list in the comments! I'd list all the users who helped here but I'm afraid I'll accidentally forget someone. Besides, everyone's comment is still down there, so again, Thank you, this post was a community effort and will probably help many players in the future. If you're coming to this post in the future, make sure to read the comments if you have any questions as other users have discussed stat growths there
Okay, I've been looking at where to use my Idealist Handmirror and got hyperfocused on this for a while. Here's the thing, most classes are damage focused and will prefer Offensive/Offensive, the boost for the other stats are not as big as getting it as a bonus on a weapon, so might as well max the damage while getting a nice weapon. Druids and Prince want initiative and nothing else, so they can apply their debuffs/buffs respectively as asap as possible, so Go-GetteGo-Getter. I thought the healer focused classes want to go last, so Keen/Keen, but I am unsure about it...
Anyways, if you guys have suggestions or anything I'm open to change this table, I think it will be an useful resource to people looking to optimize their parties.
The list is ordered by class using the same order the game when you sort your units by class except for the last 4 classes, the last three are the three endgame classes, hence the spoiler tag.
For most Offensive x2, Offensive + Precise/Keen/All-Rounder are good alternatives.
2024.04.22 15:11 RustyofShackleford Need Help Designing a Specific Type of Magic Sword
So for some context:
My setting is influenced heavily by my background in history. While not exactly historically accurate (there's magic and women tend to have more rights,) there are accurate armors, weapons tactics, etc. So for example, swords are mainly used for duels or as a secondary weapon.
But because I think swords are rad, I want at least some swords to be practical as primary weapons. To accomplish this, I've created this idea:
"Fleshcarvers," as their direct translation is from Elven to Common, are magical blades wielded almost exclusively by the elite High Elven cataphracts of the Hellagian High Imperium, elite heavy cavalry trained nearly from birth. In lieu of lances and polearms, fleshcarvers act as the cataphract's primary weapon. The bladea have been enchanted al that, in contact with inorganic material, the blade phases through completely. They only do direct damage to organic material, meaning that if swung at someone in full plate, the blade would phase through the armor, and directly damage the flesh beneath.
How could I reflect this in the stats of the sword itself? Making them +1, +2, +3, etc is the obvious choice, but I'd like to reflect this unique traits without completely making armor obsolete.
Ideas?
2024.04.21 00:26 TheWaffleSauce Peruere Origin Theory and Harbinger Theory
Allow me to yap regarding the Arlecchino animation. I kept on rewatching it for a glimpse of some lore.
I'll first throw the obvious ones out the window:
•Arlecchino's real name is Peruere
•She is very close with Clervie during her time on the house of the Hearth
•Clervie is the biological daughter of Crucabena, the previous Knave, according to the Wiki, that is. I still think there is a chance that Clervie could be related to Princess Marcotte. Princess Marcotte's story can be closely tied to the House of Hearth's origin and therefore Peruere's story but it will be a very long and winding one if I lay it out here.
Now my theories:
1. We saw how Peruere overpowered Crucabena during their fight. Actually, we saw Crucabena running around and looking for an opening during most of their fight so I believe she really wasn't physically strong to begin with, in comparison with Peruere of course. However, we still saw Peruere lose on the first phase of their clash. During this time, we saw her stare at a Lumidouce Bell (side note: it represents parting and wish for reunion and the same one Clervie was wearing) and somehow she gets stronger, enough to defeat Crucabena? However, we also see her curse flare up during this scene so I think her power scales on her curse.
2. Peruere hated how Crucabena managed the House and so she did a lot of things different from her. One of which is to call herself Father to distant herself from the acts of her Mother, and also, to avoid "fighting with her daughters".
However, we know that even after Crucabena's death, we know some people are still following previous orders from her and doing them under "the Knave's commands". Just like what we saw in Watatsumi with Efim Snezhevich trying to poison the people of Inazuma after Signora's death so he can increase the prestige of the Knave. So a lot of things we have known so far about the Knave may actually be referring to "Mother" instead of "Father". Arlecchino didn't seem as immoral as she was portrayed because of the double identity of the Knaves we have encountered.
Before going to the third theory, I'll put out my additional, more irrelevant notes first because the third theory is where the lore theorycrafting becomes uncontrolled. And I'll put the notes down so you can all go to your merry way:
Now to the real yappy part. Continuing to where I left off:
•Arlecchino didn't seem as immoral as she was portrayed because of the double identity of the Knaves we have encountered. Still, this doesn't mean she isn't strong. She is number 4 Harbinger for a reason. None of these explain why she is strong. I think that is because of her curse. Her arms look similar with Cater. So she's either a human-turned hilichurl or she at least underwent the same experiments that Cater underwent. First, I’d like to say that when discussing Arlecchino, we must note that there is a difference between Peruere and Arlecchino. Peruere is Peruere herself and Arlecchino is a Fatui Title. Second, let's look at Arlecchino's features:
•Crimson Moon connections
•Curse
•Abyss eye motifs. The eyes seen on Abyssal domains are seen on her wings in her boss form.
3. Peruere Origin Theory
The Perinheri book explains a lot regarding the Crimson Moon Dynasty of Khaenriah. I'll try to summarize it, even probably cutting of some important parts but here's the gist:
It details how an orphanage was built in Khaenriah in preparation for the arrival of a "Child from the Sea of Stars" which could potentially rival the power of gods. Over time, this orphanage became home to orphans. One of which is Perinheri. His first memory is being asked by the elders to crawl through a dark corridor. And when he reached the end, there was no exit. And then he heard them ask him if he is dead. Confused by this, he eventually said "Yes" and then he saw a Crimson Moon which turned out to be a giant eye.
After which, the exit was opened and he was proclaimed to be reborn.
Perinheri had a best friend, Hleobrant. They also met an outsider, Angelica, who fled from Liyue after her god was defeated by Deus Auri (Rex Lapis). Hleobrant fell in love with Angelica, Angelica told stories about the outside world to Hleobrant. Perinheri worried about his best friend and so he tagged along. During the course of Hleobrant trying to take Angelica's hands, he slowly became insane. Perinheri believed that his best friend would be cured if he kills Angelica. Their merciless pursuits brought them outside Khaenriah. It was then when "Hleobrant clutched his face, and the words escaping his mouth gradually grew more like the howling of a wild beast" perhaps becoming a hilichurl.
This is Angelica's explanation:
"Hleobrant is the descendant of those who forsook their god and came to the Kingdom. This is why the Kingdom's obstinately pure-blooded aristocracy persists. This is the price of betraying your own god."
"As for you, Perinheri, you are one who drifted there. Thus, you bear no such curse. You may not have the nobility to shoulder a world, but you too have your own destiny."
"And as for me? I betrayed no one, not for a moment, until my god died, so I too bear this curse not. But you now see who I truly am, yes?"
With this, I think Peruere is a descendant of Perinheri. Perinheri was “reborn” and thus Peruere had a pyro vision which we know is connected to rebirth. But why the curse? When the question becomes: “What happened to Perinheri to get such curse?”, this is where it gets wobbly. We start the assumptions.
It might’ve come from her Perinheri's partner. Peruere is a descendant of Perinheri and a Khaenriah'n mother. Remove the Xs in her eyes and she'll have dead eyes like Cater. If she is related to Khaenriah, then why doesn't she have eyes like Dainsleif does? Well Dain came from a different dynasty. Perinheri was from Khaenriah during the Crimson Moon Dynasty and Dain was from Khaenriah during the Eclipse Dynasty.
But that is just one offshoot from these theories, read the Tales of the Snow-Winged Goose. This is the same book with Princess Marcotte (Chapter II) in it. Its first chapter tells of the origin of Penguins in Teyvat and the Adventures of Pers the Penguin to swim among the sea of stars.
According to the book, the penguins came from space. It is also in this book where Freminet took inspiration for his penguin. Anyway, I think "Per" really references to "PERinheri" and "PERuere"
There is also an understanding that all Descenders are Outlanders but not all Outlanders are Descenders, that's why we're a Descender and the sibling is not.
I am considering Perinheri to be one of the descenders but I think that's just one of the many possibilities. But he's definitely an outlander. However, Genshin uses the “term” outlander loosely. Outlander typically translates to “foreigner” a lot of times, like the achievement we get from fighting Childe “Outlander vs Outlander”, but we know “Outlander” can also mean someone not from Teyvat.
4. Fatui Harbinger Theory:
I wondered why they put Baizhu on 4.6. I was on the fence with him being related to Pantalone but this is really slowly confirming it so I went on a lore-dive with extensive dependence on my Arlecchino theory.
I realized just how many of the Harbingers aren't human or have lost their humanity. Say. Scara is definitely not human. Pulcinella is definitely elven. Capitano is from Natlan and the region is known for rebirth and resurrection. For all I know, he can be a dragon, a sovereign, or he might've ate the remains of the former Pyro Sovereign. Columbina is said to be a seelie. Pierro is cursed as a Khaenriah'n and he's practically a hilichurl. Rosalynne is the Crimson Witch of Flames and has thrown away her humanity, same case with Dottore.. And Sandrone is most likely robotic.
But it's not all about being human or not, it's about immortality and defying death. Of course Rosalynne died, she wasn't immortal but she was a human who lived for 500+ years.
Now we're left with Arlecchino, Childe, and Pantalone.
For Arlecchino, she's quite complicated. There are two possibilities she could be immortal. One is her curse, her origin, and all my yapping about her connection with Perinheri. Second is her title. There is a possibility that Peruere isn't immortal but the Knave is. It is the title that is immortal. It's not just the title of course. It's connected to something bigger. I guess it'd make more sense if I explain Childe first.
Childe is human. But the title Tartaglia is not. So who's Tartaglia? Idk. Probably Skirk or Foul. Either way, the title of Tartaglia manifested itself to Childe being their apprentice and all. Childe is relatively younger than all of the other Harbingers but there are no records that his title is as young as he is, therefore, someone else held it before him, another Tartaglia. The same concept goes with Arle.
As for Pantalone. He is human. He has no vision and he is mortal. But do you know who's immortal? Baizhu.
Edit: Changed my mistake on Rosalynne's name. Thanks for pointing it out!
