2024.05.19 14:30 zero_budget_travel What city in Europe to settle down would you suggest that meets these criteria
What city in Europe would suggest to consider for someone in their late 30s who want to settle down, that meets this criteria: 1. CITY approx. 1mln population (more or less Barcelona size) in Europe (don't want to deal with any visa and have UK+EU citizenship).
- Community feeling with MANY EXPATS who settle down there - where people help, support and know each other and are friendly.
- ENGLISH speaking (I know English, Polish, some German, some Spanish)
- Well developed, GOOD GOVERMENTAL SYSTEM IBCL. TAX SYSTEM, especially for investment (stock, crypto, real estate) and small business owners (retreat running - not necessarily in this country/location), incl. loans, line of credit, credit cards etc.
- SUNNY WEAHTER (2 hot months in the summer is fine - I prefer that over gloomy, rainy and cold weather).
- Possibility to afford to buy a nice, modern HOUSE with a garden.
- Dog friendly and easy to walk around (I like walking) and 'pretty'.
Not interested in nature, educational system or anything family related as don't have kids.
Northern Europe - cold weather, high taxes, unfriendly people.
Eastern Europe - not well developed, I feel the expats there are not really for 'community feeling' but for the experience, doesn't look great, traditional mentality.
I really enjoyed living in Melbourne but due to visa and location I wouldn't want to go there.
I didn't enjoy living in Barcelona as I find the governmental system there terrible but liked the size of the city, you could walk/bike everywhere, friendly people.
I like Wrocław and Krakow but they don't have that many expats and people complain a lot and the whole mentality is a bit too traditional/conventional for me.
Was in Malta many years ago and just for holiday found it to be a retirement village (maybe it has changed).
Is there a place like this in Europe?

2024.05.19 14:25 Prestigious-Room-701 Nokia 2780 texts coming very late and all at once
Hi, I have a nokia 2780 on t-mobile. This morning, I received like 10 texts from different contacts that were sent to me throughout the day yesterday, all at once. I didn't receive any texts yesterday, which I found strange, but was busy so didn't question it. I left my phone on overnight, so it wasn't that phone was turned off and then on again, they all just came to my phone at 7:02 am- some from yesterday morning (for example, my room mate showed me that on her phone it said sent yesterday at 10 am and for me it arrived today at 7:02 am), some from yesterday afternoon or evening, for no apparent reason. After that happened, I turned phone off and on, removed and replaced battery and sim card, hoping that might do something lol? Not sure what to do, but I don't feel confident about using this phone anymore. Has this happened to anyone else and if so, what did you do to prevent it from happening again?

2024.05.19 14:19 Schopenhound display toggling with multiple graphics cards: 6 monitors to 2?
My PC currently has two RTX 2060 cards running three monitors each. Exact card details:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NYKD5FT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 My current monitors are smallish and not used for gaming, so the workload is very benign. That said, I am considering building a flight simulator that will be far more GPU-intensive (besides being a totally different physical set-up). I have already tried running X-plane of all 6 screens at once and it's not great... my idea is to have a separate set-up with one ultrawide monitor for the environment and a second, smaller screen for instruments. I will shamelessly borrow
Th3Man0nTh3M00n's post below to give an idea of the set-up:
https://www.reddit.com/MicrosoftFlightSim/comments/14ul6m3/g1000_to_gns_530_transition_air_manager_and/ In summary, I need to be able to toggle six DP inputs (three for each card) to just two (one for each card). I would love to be able to just flick a switch and transfer all video output to the flight sim rig... and then toggle back to my workstation. Any ideas?

(From the SE of the UK)
Just looking to make some new connections, see if we click and create some strong friendships along the way. Moved to a new area a while back so don’t really have a friend group around me as much.
Working on my health and fitness and generally mental state like a lot of others. But just generally want to feel better and not like I’m 80 at my age. Tackling my social anxiety too a bit more as well and improving that.
I’m a gamer, play all kinds of genres of games some of my favs being BG3, FF series, Zelda, Pokemon, monkey island, F1, WoW, Battlefield. Talking of Pokemon I like to play and collect the TCG so if you wanna share some of our best and fav cards that would be cool or even trade if you’re local to the Kent area as I practically have cards falling out of gaps and drawers everywhere 🤦🏻♂️
Book reader, generally into fantasy, crime, horror and manga. Love to travel, looking to tick Malaysia off my list or go back to Japan or Iceland again, two of my fav places I’ve been/seen! Also dabbling in photography when I get the chance and video editing as well as coding when my brain isn’t on a meltdown 😂
So yeah if any of that sounds similar or you just want to see if we click then message me!

2024.05.19 13:42 CajunLouisiana Thoughts on my OP12 against other options
So I had so many thoughts about the OnePlus 12. FYI, I used iPhones, Pixel, Galaxy s24 Ultra and this phone. I have a OnePlus Pad as well. So I still jump back and forth from my s24 and the Op12. Hee is why...
Op12: - Screen is very good bright and makes the s24 look really dim. It's fine (s24) but the OP12 is just better. - Oxygen OS for the most part is just right. Like the perfect mix of the overly simple Pixel and the full of too many options s24. The Apps are ok. I will the notes app had a way to sync the notes. - Typing is better on the s24 if you use Gboard. I know gboard is default on the OP12 but for some reason I keep hitting the home button instead of the keyboard and closing the app. Doesn't happen on the s24. I know you can use gestures instead of buttons. Hate that (gestures). - s24 is more polished which is due to it being around longer with a bigger company supporting it. But my Inspire medical device will NOT connect to the OP12 and easily connects to the Pixel, s24 and iPhone. - I don't care for the connections between the phone and pad. I find it annoying but not awful. - the OP watch 2 is great. Battery is ridiculous and is better than the Galaxy easily. - Bluetooth headphones are very good but so are the Samsung pods. - The side button rocks for silent mode through sound. - the IR blaster is fucking useful. Never would have thought. I love this so much. I did buy a plug in version for the s24 but you have to have it for it to work. I keep it on my keys. This is really holding me to the OP12.
The number one flaw which aggravates me to no end is the "Close All" button which closes every app BUT the one in use. I know you can hand close the current and then close all for the rest, but CLOSE ALL should mean close all!!! This frustrates me so much. When in the s24 or Pixel8 it is easy and quick. No need to let me know I don't need to close apps. I like the Apps to open fresh. Not changing.
Battery life on either is fine. Cameras are both good enough. The s24 clearing has way more features. But maybe I don't need of that.
I like the Pixel 8 Pro as well for it's crazy simple setup. OP12 is such a good middle ground.
That is about it. Thoughts? I really want to keep the OP12. Can I make some of this better? Suggestions?
Flying to Hawaii today for a company trip. I have both. S24 has the sim card currently. What to do?

2024.05.19 13:37 1_Bastardo_1 Temporary Job Contract (6 months) and Registration at Commune: Advise Needed
Hi everyone,
TL;DR: is it worth to register at the commune for a short term job contract of 6 months? Consider temporary accommodation, process for change in addresses whilst waiting for confirmation of registration, health insurance when having EHIC, mobile number usage.
I'm a EU citizen living in NL and there's a strong possibility in having to move ASAP to Brussels due to a job opportunity. The contract will be of 6 months
ad interim and eventually no possibility to continue at the company or wait for a new position to open/vacate for me. My intention is to move permanently to Brussels as I'd like to continue to work in my area, but I don't want to commit to a rental contract of 3 years without knowing how's it going to be in 6 months. I'd like some advise on which choice to make as having the national registry number unblocks all the other stuff that I need to tend to: eID, health insurance; bank account; istme identification, etc
I read a bunch of posts regarding this, and did my Google research.
Considering my 6 month timeline, I'm still not sure regarding:
- ~Temporary accommodation~:
- Is it enough to put a temporary address in a job contract and to register at the commune? I don't have other possibilities - friend's address, for instance - to do this and I'm not sure if my company will help me with this.
- Does the company need a registered address to have it on a job contract?
- Can it be from a temporary accommodation address?
- Do temporary/serviced apartments, in general, allow you to register?
- Would you advise on having temporary accommodation for the duration of the contract or after 2/3 months for a more permanent type? The savings/cost side is significant if comparing both, and I don't have much money available to afford a €1500 apartment for 6 months and eat up 50/60% of my income.
- If I ~change addresses~ - let's assume to a different commune - while I'm waiting for the commune registration to be complete - which can take several months according to some posts here and sometimes over my 6 month stay in Brussels -:
- Will it stop the process and would it be necessary to start another process in the new commune? I'm also considering the Police check for this.
- Also: do I need to register at the exact commune or does it have a central service like BruCity via MyBXL enough for any municipality?
- ~Health insurance~: as I have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), do I need to register with a mutualité?
- Company offers complementary private insurances.
- ~Mobile number~: is it worth to have a BE number when I can use my NL one?
Really appreciate your input on this for a more informed decision. Let me know if there are other things to consider based on this scenario.

Man I love this controller, but the inability to remap buttons 6 and 3 to not be LB and RB is so unfortunate! is there literally no way to remap them? If not I might have to either relearn on this controller with new button layout or go back to my Edge/Betop C3 which I rotate.
Man the Sanwa supply, while seemingly quite rare and not talked about would literally be the G.O.A.T fight game pad for me if only for this one issue :-(

2024.05.19 12:35 AITheXmasAH Potentially moving to the US from UK - Advice Needed!
Hi guys,
So long story short - I am in the final process of the job recruitment process for a really exciting opportunity in the US. They know I need H-1B sponsorship and, as a cap-exempt employer, they can begin the process pretty much whenever. Great.
However - this opportunity was a complete surprise. 6 months ago I moved into a new apartment with a 12 month lease, took out credit to buy furniture etc. etc. and so I have an interest-free credit card balance of around £10k. I also have a repayable sign on bonus at my job of £4k which I will almost certainly need to pay back.
This might sound crazy, but I ran the maths and I realised I could pay it all off within one year on my salary if I stayed in the UK. I have been doing that, though instead of paying it off directly I have been putting money into a savings account just because I figured since the CC debt was interest free... I may as well make some money on my money instead of paying it down right?
In any event, I'm on target to have it cleared down by the end of the year. Great. But... this is a curveball and I'm not sure how to manage the situation.
If I get the job, I'd be on around $70k per year, which turns out to be $4.6k net having used the take home pay calculators. This is quite a bit more than what I am on in the UK, but I know the cost of living in the US is quite a bit higher.
I'd plan to pretty much sell everything I own in the UK and would expect to get around £5-7k based on this. This, plus my savings would give me around £10k to play with.
Overall, I expect I'd move within 5 months so I would really like to start planning now and put a financial plan together. My current thoughts are thus:
- Negotiate relocation expenses with my prospective employer should I get the position.
- Pay down around half of the interest free CC balance - i.e. £5k.
- Obviously pay back the bonus clawback - £4k (Will likely be around £2.6k as the bonus was paid Gross)
- This leaves net savings of £500 - £1k. Somehow I'd have to support myself for 2 weeks on this in the US before my first pay packet.
Overall I am stumped if this is a good plan or not. Alternatively, I could just carry on paying the minimum debt payment in the UK until the interest free period expires, but this doesn't sound like a good idea.
Ugh... I am so excited about this opportunity. I really wish I saw it coming 6 months ago!! I would have made such different decisions. But... hindsight is always 20/20.
If anyone has had a similar situation I'd love to hear your advice. Thank you <3
