From TONIGHT to Sunday, the 9th of June we have a little bit of everything. There's some Cuban and Latino, a lot of Jazz and even a Sitar player. Beauty and the Beast is closing at QPAC, Sky Ferreira is playing tonight at the Princess and my broke ass is going to miss it. Everything is Embarrassing - or just my wallet?

At # 22 for you consideration I give you Oso Ighadoro. The Senior Center out of Marquette. Ighadoro has two elite skills - passing and perimeter defence. When Nurk can't stay on the floor, Oghadoro can. It's on the offensive end however, where Ighadoro can make the biggest difference to our team. James Jones talked about the challenge of getting the best out of KD and what is the best basketball situation for him. Well KD in my opinion played his best basketball in Golden State with Draymond Green alongside him. Draymond Green's biggest strength - perimeter defence and passing. So whyy wouldnt we prioritise a passing big who can anchor our defence? Kevin O'Connor from ringer gives him a comp to Al Horford and ESPN has him in a sleeper tier. Most conclude he has the skills to stick in the NBA. Sort of a nice pick up for us, right? In the half court we could give the ball to Igahdoro in the paint and surround him with Beal, Allen , Booker and KD. Ighadoro could be a pseduo point for us with elite scorers cutting and moving into open spots for Igahdoro to find them. Hell I went down a rabbit hole recently with Bill Walton (RIP) and his time with the Celtics. Walton and Bird were an incredible pair. Walton would just find Bird in these spots where it was automatic. To the point it felt a like little cheating. Now Igahdoro isn't close to Bill Walton but he's a modern big who has great vision. Watch that video and imagine KD and Book on the receiving end. Honestly watching the 86 Celtics was like poetry and by taking Oso Igahdoro we have a chance to emulate one of the greatest offensive in NBA history.

The Indianapolis Colts have been busy this offseason, making strategic moves to bolster their roster and coaching staff as they prepare for the 2024 NFL season. Despite barely missing the playoffs last year with a backup quarterback starting most of the season, the Colts have focused on retaining their core players, expecting improvement from the return of Anthony Richardson and the natural growth of their young talent.
Quarterback
The Colts are excited to have Anthony Richardson back under center after he missed most of the 2023 season due to injury. Richardson's return, along with the natural development of his skills, should provide a significant boost to the team's offense. The Colts also brought in veteran quarterback Joe Flacco on a 1-year, $4.5 million contract to serve as a backup and mentor to Richardson. Flacco's experience will be valuable in helping Richardson develop under the guidance of quarterbacks coach Cam Turner.
Running Back
The Colts re-signed running back Trey Sermon to maintain depth behind star rusher Jonathan Taylor. The team is confident in the abilities of their young running backs, including Sermon, Tyler Goodson, and Evan Hull, to contribute to the offense. However, the Colts may look to add a veteran running back after OTAs or initial roster cuts to provide additional experience and depth to the position group.
Wide Receiver
One of the Colts' top priorities this offseason was ensuring that their core players remained in Indianapolis. The team successfully re-signed wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. to a substantial 3-year, $70 million extension, solidifying his role as the team's primary target in the passing game. In the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Colts selected wide receiver Adonai Mitchell out of Texas, adding another explosive weapon to their passing game. Mitchell's addition could threaten the playing time of Alec Pierce, who has not shown significant growth thus far in his career. Fifth-round pick Anthony Gould from Oregon State adds depth to the position. THE MAYBE LIST

1. Bullock Jr., Reggie - Was a solid role player in Dallas for ages before getting exiled to Houston. Didn't play much behind their glut of youth but could be a Justin Holiday type player for us off the bench with higher upside as a shooter.
2. Burks, Alec - NYK might want him back after he played great on the Hospital Knicks team in the playoffs, but the old trade throw in showed he can still shoot, ball handle, and most importantly draw fouls at an NBA level even against playoff competition.
3. Covington, Robert - He's only here because he may be washed, but even 70% of Old ROCO would be a revelation for Denver. Can legitimately guard 1-5, shoots 34-38% from 3, passes well. A connecting player for any bench lineup and running Mike/AG/ROCO as the frontcourt for non-Jokic minutes would overwhelm most teams with length.
4. Crowder, Jae - The bucks might keep him after giving up 1000 second round picks for him, but the old dreadhead can still shoot well from each corner and play strong/physical defense. Could be a solid 3/4 to play with the AG at centeMPJ at PF bench lineups.
5. Dinwiddie, Spencer - I've never been high on Dinwiddie (Dinshittie???) but he is an NBA level PG who can space the floor, ball handle, draw fouls. I think he looks way better using his size against bench units that typically cannot defend a big guard like him successfully. If we give Jamal B2Bs off then he'd be fine. Might be available at the min after a terrible run with LA this season. What better way to rebuild your value than play with Jokic and shoot a bunch of open 3s?
6. Dunn, Kris - Unbelievably underrated player. He'd be a top choice if it wasn't likely Utah (or someone else) throws a bag of money at him. If he slips through the cracks, our bench PG problem is solved for a year. Great POA defense, ballhandling. Up to 36.5% from deep this last year. Would be in the playoff rotation for sure.
7. Garza, Luka - Unsure he's available at a min, but he's looked serviceable as a backup big when KAT was out with various injuries the last few years. Anytime Reid goes into the starting lineup and Garza mans the bench, he can be an offensive force. Could keep our heads above water in non-jokic minutes.
8. Hayward, Gordon - Injury prone, completely non factor in the playoffs for OKC. Both have tanked his demand... still might demand some money given he's a former borderline all star. But another guy who could slip through the cracks given the new CBA scaring a lot of teams away from any contracts. Would be a nice secondary ballhandler, scorer, veteran presence for the bench. I think a young team will overpay to have him mentor their guys though.
9. Highsmith, Haywood - I don't love signing ex-miami role players because they generally win by trying harder than everyone else. But he shot 40% from 3 this season, defends well, and is a Rich Man's Justin Holiday replacement. Started 20 games this season for a Heat team riddled with injuries and looked solid in most of them. Don't think he's going to be available but I didn't think Bruce Brown would be available for the MLE two summers ago.
10. Horton-Tucker, Talen - The Jazz became infinitely better as soon as they benched THT for Dunn, not a huge fan of his game. That said, he can playmake, score, and defend better than Reggie Jackson. Turnover prone and not a playoff Rotation guy imo, but if the FO is really not loving Gillespie or Pickett, he could do in a pinch until the deadline/buyout market. Good potential, maybe just needs better team culture? Or it could just be low BBIQ.
11. Kornet, Luke -Solid bench big who can shoot, rebound and give Jokic a breather. Boston likely can't afford anything because of their contract situation exploding next year and he is an "unsexy" pick for backup big relative to Drummond. Would be a great get but we might get priced out of him if some team offers 2/17 or something of that nature.
12. Lowry, Kyle - The old train is still chugging. Would be a great bench PG, philly had him closing lineups in the playoffs. Defends, shoots, playmakes, flops at a high level. Old man could organize the young guns on the bench as well. Don't think he slips through the cracks and philly might well keep him, but I'd like to see us scoop him if possible.
13. Martin, KJ - Freak athlete, very solid defender. Got forgotten on the edge of philly's bench but would be a good CB replacement if KCP leaves and we have a CB sized hole in the bench. Pure energy, would work well with a bench that loves to get out and run in transition.
14. McDermott, Doug - Great shooter, terrible defender. Would be a regular season pickup but could space the floor well for CB and PWAT to attack the paint, and the other bench players could likely cover for his defensive weakness. Decent fit and will likely be available. Not a playoff rotation player though.
15. Okeke, Chuma - Lost in the Magic's glut of young wings, Chuma was a solid defender on a young magic team, and used to start a solid amount of games for them. Unfortunately his shooting fell off a cliff in minimal minutes last year. Was a near lottery pick for a reason, and Orlando just happened to get two stars that play his position. A shoot the moon type signing, unlikely to crack the playoff rotation but could refresh the youth on the team if we pull some trade that involves Strawther, Watson, Tyson, ect.
16. Payne, Cameron - Basically Reggie Jackson at this point. Only sign if we trade away reggie and CG and Pickett are terrible in Summer league. Solid shooter for the bench but thats it.
17. Prince, Taurean - Great corner shooter, plays good defense. Rich man's Justin Holiday. Think someone throws money at him after all the games he started for LAL this year but you never know.
18. Samanic, Luka- 6'11, can move well, allegedly used to be able to shoot but shot 20% from 3 this year (EUGH). Hit 33% in the G league and has been a solid rebounder since Euroleague. Spurs got him in the first years ago for the upside that just hasn't materialized. A last resort backup big, but a big body that can move and score 20 PPG in the G-league feels like maybe Jay Huff Eastern Euro edition.
19. Stevens, Lamar - Big, strong, went to Penn State which is always a plus for Booth. Very solid defender, the main thing keeping him from being an NBA commodity is an inability to crack 32% from 3. If he could get 30-32% again like he was in 2022-2023, it would be serviceable enough for someone with his defense and he'd be Pwat/Holiday insurance as an 8th man in the playoffs. Probably available for a min after ending up on the Memphis scrap heap this year.
20. Thompson, Tristan - Pros: would supply the guys with steroids. Imagine Mike with dwight howard shoulders? He'd be a post scorer in no time. Tristan at this point is mainly a big body and a guy who could fit in the DAJ role but be a little more mobile and playable during the season.
21. Banton, Dalano - Imagine a G-league quality, tanking team Lebron James. Watching him tank command the end of season blazers was something else, but he did hit 36% of his 3s, score 18 ppg, rebound and pass well for the last 20 games of the season. Wouldn't hate to pick up Jamal's countryman, but Portland is likely going to pick up the team option unless they explode their roster (very possible given Brogdon is still blocking Scoot and Ayton looked alive for the end of the season. who knows what they do).
22. Robinson-Earl, Jeremiah - Former 5 star villanova recruit, Solid rotation big for OKC for years. Ended up in New Orleans riding the Pellies bench behind Zion/Ingram/Nance/Valanciunas. If they don't pick up his team option (They are going to be making big moves this summer to move Ingram and maybe CJ Mccollum), JRE could be a cap casualty. Always a solid shooter, having a 6'8 guy who can hit 34% from 3s, rebound with strength, guard bigs is a nice piece. Would be a solid stand in for Vlatko if the FO decides to move on from our favorite Slovenian.
23. Waters III, Lindy- Knockdown shooter who has never really gotten a fair look in OKC. One of their infinite draft picks stuck on the bench behind their young core. If they don't pick up his team option and look for upgrades, he'd be an interesting guy to give some run and see what he can do. Shot 44% from deep two different seasons in college, born in Boulder, 6'7 in shoes. Would be excited to see him as bench SG if CB moves into the starting lineup.

If you're still here, Congrats. You have made it to the good stuff. This is the list of guys I would be happy to have added to the Nuggets, and have a decent-high chance of being available for the right price.
THE CREAM OF THE CROP

1. Bitadze, Goga - I am Googoo for Goga puffs. Hopefully no one noticed, but while WCJ was out for a lot of the early season, Goga filled in seamlessly for the Magic. Accumulates tons of blocks, Offensive boards, able to finish around the rim with ease. Just keep him from shooting 3s. The best hooper from Georgia might be available on a cheap deal this summer as Orlando will prioritize outside shooting over size and WCJ/Mo Wagner appear to have locked up the 1/2 spots at center. Would love to see Goga in Denver, he could be a playoff caliber backup big from everything I've seen.
2. Drummond, Andre - The rebound king is a UFA. Many have mentioned him here, but Drummond always fills in well on any team as a backup big despite his shooting woes due to his control of the glass and defensive capabilities. His weakness has always been he is a legend in his mind, and thus tries things he has no business attempting. Head scratching euro-steps, behind the back transition dribbles out of bounds, contested floaters off the shot clock? All on the table. If Malone can bully him into playing a role, he would be a great pickup. The premier backup big available this summer.
3. Duke Jr., David (Two-Way) - The Klan chief is more of a depth pickup, but the all 1st team G-league player in 2023 has improved his outside shooting to 37% and maintains his slashing and defensive capabilities he showcased at Providence. Another guy that would be more of a depth/Two way pickup if we have to package some young guys to get off the zeke+Reggie contracts, but Duke has grown every year and looks like he could peak as a 6'5 3+D guard with bench lineups. Seems like a great long term investment if San Antonio uses their two way spots on this years picks.
4. Fultz, Markelle - Another odd man out in Orlando, Fultz still can't shoot 3s after his phantom shoulder issues... but has become a solid defender and midrange scorer as well as a fantastic POA defender off the bench. Always a playmaker, he could unlock Watson and Braun as a distributor as well as turn the switching bench defense into an iron curtain. Orlando has committed to Cole Anthony long term, loves Suggs, and just drafted Anthony Black. No one needs 4 PGs. If Fultz falls to the Nuggets, bench spacing would be an issue, but we would have an identity of defense and running in transition. Not sure who else is going to bid up for his services.
5. Goodwin, Jordan (Two-Way) - Goodwin first came onto my radar while watching him in DC as their backup guard in 22-23. He was an energy monster, getting steal after steal as a POA defender and diving all over the court. A poor man's Caruso/Kris Dunn, he is in the low 30s from 3 but is a willing passer and extremely strong defender. One of the better guard rebounders around, he was averaging 8(!!!) boards a game once he started getting minutes in Memphis end of season, which would be a huge help to the undersized bench unit. The only reason he isn't still in DC is Beal knew him from St Louis and demanded Goody be traded to Phoenix with him. Phx was signing a bunch of veterans to try to compete (lol) and Goodwin was a roster cut. Would be a great time to pick him up once Memphis makes some cuts as their 100 injuries this year heal. "We have Alex Caruso at home" type of player but I would love to see the havoc he could wreak at altitude.
6. Harris, Gary - Come home Gary. After getting 24 minutes per game in Orlando's rotation this past year, Gary might not be in high demand as his 3pt efficiency tumbled from 43% down to 37%. Injuries, as always, remain an issue, but Gary wouldn't be available for cheap if he was always healthy. As Orlando is one of the few teams with cap space focused on the big names this summer, they might not re-sign the UFA if they throw a bag of cash at PG/Klay/ect. They also drafted two guards last summer and likely want to see what the young guns can do.
7. Holiday, Aaron - Why not get another Holiday brother? The youngest Holiday managed to sneak into Houston's rotation this year, shooting 39% from deep and 92% from the line. The sharpshooting guard is solid on defense and would likely be an expensive bench piece or starter if God had made him 6'4 instead of 6'0. While undersized, Aaron would be a perfect second unit ballhandler and spacer, opening up the court for Denver's young wings to attack the rim.
8. Jackson, Quenton (Two-Way)- Athletic Freak. More of a depth pickup if we have to package Strawther or Watson to get off the Nnaji contract. A massive 6'5 PG with 40+ inches of bounce, Jackson flies around the court throwing dimes and outpacing teams. Would thrive at altitude and be a great distributor for all the young shooters Denver has drafted. Just don't ask him to take jumpshots. Would become the second best dunker after AG the moment he stepped in the building though.
9. Len, Alex - Massive body, great rebounder, has been running his ass off in Sacramento for two years backing up Sabonis. Don't think many teams are vying for his services and he would be a body to take some strain off Jokic against bad teams and in blowouts. Perfect vet min backup big.
10. Mamukelashvili, Sandro - Sandro Character Limit would be one of my top 3 picks on this list but he is an RFA and the spurs look like they might want to keep him and match any other offers. Big Mamu is a 6'11 tank that shoots 33% from deep for his career and battles for boards like his life depends on it. Would be a great 4/5 for depth if SA decides to spend some of their cap this summer to build around Wemby and still avoid luxury tax.
11. Morris, Monte - Needs no explanation. Come home. After being tossed around the league the last two years, Monte could likely be had for a vet min.
12. Plumlee, Mason - Mason is a known commodity in Denver, always able to run well, pass well, and rim protect. As long as he's not on the perimeter at the end of games (KMS), Money Mase would be a solid backup center to give Jokic some more time chilling on the bench. I imagine
13. Saric, Dario - Currently finishing a one year deal with GSW, Super Dario would bring great passing, size and shooting off the bench. A 37% 3 point shooter with slick passing and playoff experience from Philly and Phoenix, Dario would be an offensive weapon off the bench surrounded by athletic wings. Would really elevate what we could do offensively given he can space for the young wings and distribute the ball well from the mid and low post. One of my 3 top big men signing possibilities for us.
14. Smith Jr., Dennis - Athletic Freak and ball of energy, DSJ has had a resurgence since leaving Dallas and Detroit. A career 30% 3 point shooter, DSJ is best used as a penetrate and kick energy weapon off the bench. After having his most efficient season ever (low bar to be fair), he is looking like a solid playmaker and court general for bench units. He can be had for cheap and would be a clear upgrade over Reggie at Backup PG. Also he hates Dallas, and goes 110% against them every game. Given how the West looks right now, that could come in handy.
15. Theis, Daniel - Another Clippers backup big, Thies anchored the German defense that won the FIBA World Cup last summer. He shoots 35% from 3, is switchable on defense at a mobile 6'8 250, and would be another solid backup big signing for the Nuggets. Played in 40+ playoff games with Boston and was a rotation player in all of them, so he's prepared and experienced in the Postseason.
16. Tillman, Xavier - The ex-Grizzly filled in admirably last postseason after Brandon Clarke and Steven Adams both got season ending injuries in the final month of the season. He had a 22-13 game against AD to win the Grizzlies a playoff game (what backup big on Denver is capable of this??) and has been a solid bench big his entire career. Boston traded for him at the break for KP insurance and it wouldn't be a terrible idea to pick up Tillman on a minimum as a 2nd/3rd string big. Mobile at 6'8 250, he would be a solid fit with our "Guard and Run" style bench.
17. Walker IV, Lonnie- Lonnie won the Lakers a playoff game over Golden State just last year and everyone forgot because they hit the Denver buzzsaw next round. On a 1 year minimum in Brooklyn, Lonnie put together a solid season off the bench. 38% from 3, decent defense, explosive athleticism, Lonnie could be a ballhandler and spacer on the second unit.
18. Wright, Delon - I have loved Delon's game for years. He is perpetually undervalued. Massive guard with great POA defense and decent shooting, he can slot into any lineup Denver runs. He can bring the ball up, shoot reliably, and playmake without turning the ball over. Defending the other teams best guard in almost every stop he's been at, the 6'5 PG has been one of the top guards in the NBA at steals rates at every stop. At 35% from 3, delon also can't be left alone on the perimeter and would slot into the backup point guard spot with ease. The only issue is injuries, but he wouldn't be searching for vet min deals if he was healthy all the time. He got his last big contract with DC two years ago, and I think he could be had on a 1 year deal if he slips through the cracks. Top 3 option for me.
19. Fournier, Evan -Don't Google was a sharpshooter and scorer with value at every stop in the NBA before a disastrous stint in his second season in New York. After being a 40% 3 point shooter with decent defense scoring 15-20 a game, Fournier got buried on the bench in New York behind Josh Hart and Quentin Grimes and never resurfaced. He got exiled to Detroit in the middle of last year and played terribly. Every time the French national team plays, Fournier shows himself to be a quality player, so Olympic success this summer could sink hopes of getting him for cheap. If not though... a solid scorer and reliable volume shooter off the bench is just what Denver needs.
20. Green, Jeff - The return of Uncle Jeff is very possible if Houston doesn't pick up his 8 Million team option this summer. Not sure about their long term plans but if they extend Jalen Green and Sengun this summer, Uncle Jeff could be on his way out of Houston. Why not return to the only place he's won out of his myriad stops?

If you're counting, there's one FA left unaccounted for. This guy has the same upside as Wemby and there will be a feeding frenzy for his services this summer as the potential best player in the league, so he gets his own category.

I queried this project a while back, so I had workshopped the plot part. I just didn’t have comps, because at that time I couldn’t think of similar works. But now with readers enjoying “We Need to Talk about Kevin”, “Gone Girl” and “A Certain Hunger”, I thought it most opportune to requery.
After reading my full when I had first queried, several agents told me things like I write well, submit again, and one agent said she didn’t know how to place (sell) it. I wonder if times have changed.

Dear Ms. Agent:
A cultured chef’s compulsive culinary fantasies kill his chances for true love, until he meets the “perfect” woman.
The “seasons” come and go, and for European chef and art connoisseur Emmanuel Esmé, safely ensconced in upstate New York, premeditating a meal and braising the intriguing blend of raw pounded flesh and fresh herbs, simmering the steamy cassoulets, allowing the gelatins to get hard as liquids boiled passionately in large copper pots, drives him into an ecstatic frenzy.
At first, the ethereal and budding British fashion model seemed the ideal bride, but upon supping on his celebratory soufflé she seems to evaporate into thin air. Then along comes the summery Olympic swimmer for whom he spent days preparing an authentic Marseille bouillabaisse, but who has a disastrous encounter with a waterbed. Luckily, Emmanuel discovers a down-to-earth botanist to help him get over his grief, but she unfortunately digs up some things about him which leads to an unforgettable one-year anniversary dinner. Emmanuel’s loneliness ends when a flamenco dancer sparks his interest, yet the relationship soon burns out.
Although he is able to coddle an egg, his gastronomic dreams regarding the consumption of the flesh, the possession of the woman, skewer his attempts to achieve wedded bliss, until his partner in black-market art crime, the unwitting Father Cassavetes, enlists the services of a grief counselor, spilling out their secrets like a spoiled sabayon.
However, Emmanuel's solipsistic blissfulness may soon end when he’s suspected of both the illicit trade of Russian icons and the murder of his girlfriends. It is only when Emmanuel meets the beautiful artist Mirabel Etat, who has her own closet skeletons, that he can get out of his predicament and create the loving partnership he truly craves.
AN ACQUIRED TASTE, complete at 90,000 words, is a literary psychological thriller, (which can be read both literally and figuratively) for readers who would enjoy Patricia Highsmith meeting Marcel Proust in a dark alleyway. The work, with its shocking twist ending, and suspenseful, multi-perspective narrative will appeal to fans of tightly plotted literary psychological thrillers told by unreliable narrators and to readers who enjoy evocative food and art writing. Part I: A Time to Mourn
Chapter One
January 1994
“Look, that’s him over there,” the church secretary whispered to Dolores. She nodded and looked towards the front pew where a boyish looking man, who was weighted down by the anchoring force of deep despair, hands held up to his face, was buoyed up in the sea of grief by his companions, as the words of the priest echoed throughout the chapel、 “We are gathered here to say farewell to Ginger Vesta and to commit her into the hands of God.”
Dolores let out a barely perceptible sigh. She recognized the signs: his abandoned posture, his exhausted features, the absence of effervescence, what all seemed to be the visible manifestations of a loved one’s death. Trained as she was, she saw that he was in the early stages of mourning and that an arduous journey lay ahead.
Discreetly glancing around the nave, she silently made observatory notes. Beautiful religious artworks and shimmery silver chalices flanked the altar. Meticulously painted on glittery gold grounds, were those miniature Madonna with Child paintings authentic Russian icons? How could it be possible that such ornate and precious works made their way to this out of the way rural American church? Her thought was interrupted when she caught sight of an incongruous figure. Standing near the door, was a police officer with elfin features, arms crossed, looking menacing. Hmm, why have law enforcement at a country funeral? She soon forgot this question as she became distracted by the variety of people in attendance. About fifty or sixty mourners of varying ages, mainly European descent, clad in black funeral dress, sat stiffly in the wooden pews, their faces tanned and weathered with deep lines like roadmaps delineating the individual paths of hard living.

“So, in short, magnetism is a special force that makes certain materials attract or push away from each other. Like my wire wrapped iron rod, it can pull metal objects towards it without touching them. This happens because of something inside the stone or metal that creates an invisible force.
This invisible force can make things move or stick together. Inside these special stones, there are tiny particles that all line up in the same direction, creating a powerful force. When you have two of these stones, they can either pull each other together or push each other apart, depending on how you hold them.
We can use this force in many ways, like making objects move without touching them or even creating energy. It might seem like magic, but it's actually a natural part of how the world works.”
“Well, I go’ bou’ alf o’that. An’ i’ soun’ like magic wit’ rules, bu’ you say your worl’ runs on i’. So i’ mus’ ‘e reliable,” Eldrin responds, a little incredulous and a little lost
“Yes, it does sound like magic, and looking at the way we tamed it, its symbolism looks a lot like runes, but the runes are for understanding, not operation. In fact, we regularly give kids a lightbulb, motor and battery to play with as an introduction to electricity.”
“So you are saying you are going to make a kid’s toy and it will overhaul our world?!” Lena interjects, quite fed up with all of this tech talk and really wanting to do something else. Realizing she just continued the discussion, she sighs and puts her forehead on the desk.
“It’s not a kid’s toy!” I retort, “Some are used in them, but some of our largest industries are only capable because of massive motors, moving assembly lines, and cranes that carry tonnes of molten steel around the foundry. Saying it’s a kids toy is like saying the lever is a kid’s toy. Sure it can be made into a seesaw, but it can split logs, move heavy things and so much more.”
Thallion has not stopped writing since I started discussing, but chimes in at this moment: “Anyways, now that we are all here, and we have the parts, let us begin fabrication of this mighty machine”
“So first we need an awful lot of very thin copper wire,” I state. Everyone looks apprehensive at the mention of copper. “Since all of you have an issue with copper, I’ll draw it, I just need the tools.”
“Go’ ‘em righ’ ‘ere! Pliers, drawin’ pla’e, an’ win’er”
“Good, I’ll start working on that, with Eldrin as I’ll need him to soften it again. Meanwhile, the three of you can start by checking the fit of the 2 magnets to the motor casing, and determine a way to hold the brushes such that they do not contact the body. Bad things happen if that occurs. Also, Try to see if you can compact charcoal hard enough to make the brushes. Originally they were literally copper brushes, but I don’t want the risk of copper more than we need”
Taking the navel orange sized translator, I head over to Eldrin’s and am immediately greeted by the wave of heat, as shutting down the forge and reigniting it would take too much time and fuel. Eldrin shows me where he anchors the drawplate, and shows the attachment point for the winder. Setting it up, I feed the roughly rounded bar into the largest hole, and clamp it onto the winder using the pliers. Slowly turning it, the copper gives and stretches. After pulling it through, Eldrin grasps the spool and tosses it into the forge, heating it until it is cherry red, then quenching it to cool so it can be handled again. I unwind the tip of the new cable, and run it through the next largest die.
We work in silence, just the sound of the forge, and the hiss of the cable hitting the water.
Eventually, I ask the question that has been on my mind since Eldrin appeared after fixing the translator. “Eldrin, why do you have a heavy accent even when translated? Shouldn’t the translator remove all of that?”
“Eh? Oh ya. The ‘ranslata, ‘tis qui’e good for ‘ransmission of non elven tongue. I’ learns slowly, bu’ me orc ba’groun’ really messes with announcia’ion, wha’ with tha tusks. I usu’lly spea’ in elvish, bu’ the ‘ransla’or really despises my ‘ee’ sound. ‘Tis ac’ually surprisin’ tha ‘t works fer ya a’ all. Howeva, me na’ive tongue translated scares off many, espec’ly young’uns”
“Yes…yes.” I reply. How is english even remotely close to elvish, compared to orc? I am not even of this planet, so my language does not even descend from them!
Trying to not think about that at the moment, I continue to draw the wire, as we go down in sizes, it takes longer to draw as there is more wire to pull through.
Just constantly turning the wheel, my mind wanders off again eventually, after the 14th decrease.
I know I should let it go, but the weight of me not having a purpose and accidentally being summoned is driving me insane. What am I to do? I cannot go back unless I make a teleporter, or whatever was in that tower that I supposedly broke.
“‘Ey! Pay attention! Ya jus’ snapped the wire!”
Shaking my head from the daze, I see that I have turned the spool a few times since the wire snapped.
“Grea’. Now I ‘ave to work i’, an’ mel’ the two en’s ‘ogetha.”
“Can I do it?” I reply, hoping beyond hope to have something mentally stimulating to distract me from that path again.
“‘Ave any forge ‘perience?”
“Well, no…”
“Then I ‘ave ta do i’”
Eldrin grabs the wires by the very tips of his fingers, and bringing them to the forge, heats the ends to red again, using tongs, he guides the 2 ends together, and beats them into one. Sprinkling water over the joints, he puts the tongs down and grabs the wire, bringing it back to me.
“Yeowwwwww!” He tosses the wire on the floor, and grabs his right hand. “Heavens above! I have, yet again, inadvertently subjected myself to the accursed touch of that wretched copper! The ensuing agony is intolerable. I entreat you, with the utmost urgency and alacrity, to retrieve the esteemed bottle perched above the forge, without a moment’s delay!”
Jumping up and grabbing the bottle, I rush over to Eldrin, popping the cork off of it, immediately I recognize the smell of apple cider vinegar.
“Now s’and back, this hur’s hella lot”
He pours a small amount into the palm of his hand, I back up as I see his face scrunch up in pain, and him grit his teeth. He sucks in air through his teeth and then punches the wall.
“Damn ‘rea’men’. No’ sure wha’s worse: the cause or the cure. I go’ the wire back togetha, draw i’ through the same die ta smooth it.”
Seeing all that, I nod vigorously, and set it back up, seeing how he is the orc, the strong tough one and that small amount of contact did that to him, I would hate to see what it would do to others.
After a few minutes, I ask “I guess that is your native tongue translated?”
“Aye. Sorry ta scare ye wif tha’.”
“No, no issue, just sound really formal to me.”
“Huh. ‘Tis quite formal, bu’ the large words tend ‘o scare of the othas, ‘specially los’ venturers. Shoutin’ ‘FEAR NOT’ ‘ends ta en’ qui’e poorly for the both o’ us.”
I burst into laughter, here the orcs sound like gentlemanly scholars!
“Good ta see ya laughin’ again, now le’s ge’ this wire s’re’ched”
Over the next couple of hours, We draw the wire until it is less than a millimeter in diameter. My fear of causing more pain to others keeps me focussed for the rest of the time.
“Ey, ‘fore we ‘ead back, jus’ know ‘tis was no’ your faul’. You did no’ summon yourself ‘ere, ‘t was no’ your choice. As fer the wire, i’ happens, and I am surprised you are ‘anging on this well.” Eldrin states, caringly, sitting back on the stool he has behind the counter, forehead sweat glistening in the light of the forge.
“I di’ no’ ge’ the entire discussion with the others, but you are young, los’ and alone, similar ta many ‘venturer I had arrive at me forge la’e a’ nigh’. The danger has passed. Relax, and ‘alk when ready.”
Calmed down, I nod, while choking back some tears of relief.
“Now, le’s go change the worl’”

If the rumors we've all seen and read online are true, Stewart-Haas are in their final days of NASCAR competition as we know it.
The 2020-2021 parts freeze, the next-gen car, loss of major sponsors, and an ownership duo whose hearts belonged to other forms of motorsport all have played huge parts in contributing to their impending doom.
Not long ago if you were to tell me that a major Ford team was on life-support and either heading for a merger or for liquidation the obvious thought would've been Roush.
But Stewart-Haas' demise feels familiar.
A Ford powerhouse anchored by a handful of major sponsors loses all of them before effectively liquidating and merging off a once-mighty operation.
Stewart-Haas is just in the same position as Robert Yates Racing after 2006.
From the time Robert Yates bought the Ranier-Lundy #28 car in 1988 through 2005 Robert Yates Racing was the dominant Ford race team in NASCAR.
The 1999 series championship and championship close call's as well as three Daytona 500's and 58 wins existed on the team's resume. Names like Davey Allison, Dale Jarrett, Ernie Irvan, Ricky Rudd, and Elliott Sadler all won numerous times for Yates' two cars during this time.
NRF has covered the Yates teams turbulent 2006 campaign, so I won't dive much into it. Sadler bailed on them to drive for Everham partway through the year, Jarrett departed at the end of the season to drive for the newly minted Michael Waltrip Racing and those cheatin' Toyota's but also took his longtime sponsor UPS with him.
UPS' departure left Yates with only Mars to sponsor two full-time cars in what was the deepest field we have seen in the Cup Series in the 21st century.
What hurt the team most was a pair of questionable replacements for Sadler and Jarrett, a duo that from 2003-2005 each scored two wins for the team.
Yates called David Gilliland up from obscurity to finish out the 2006 campaign in the #38 car. Gilliland had scored the upset of the year with his Busch Series win at Kentucky, but was he really Cup Series ready?
Long story short, no. David Gilliland was not Cup Series ready in 2006. He would not finish higher than 15th in 14 races in 2006 but did win the pole in his Talladega debut.
For Jarrett's #88 Yates went back to a former driver for the team by calling 2025 Hall of Fame inductee Ricky Rudd up from his year-long sabbatical and back to the Cup Series.
Now, it's easy to criticize both hirings. An unproven then nobody and a veteran ready for retirement, but 2006-2007 silly season saw surprisingly slim pickings other than Mark Martin. All of the driver and team changes were planned and signed well in advance and Yates was behind the curve from the onset.
Once Ford nixed Yates place in the Mark Martin sweepstakes, their hands were effectively tied.
Yates marched on with Gilliland and Rudd into a new era of NASCAR in 2007.
Surprisingly, 2007 actually began well for the team. Gilliland sat on the pole for the 2007 Daytona with Rudd to the outside.
The greatest Daytona 500 in history began with Yates cars leading them to the green.
This would be just one of a handful of highlights for Yates' team this year. Gilliland had a top-5 at Talladega and another top-10 at Daytona, while Rudd got his lone top-10 of the year in the Coca-Cola 600.
The iron man Ricky Rudd also had to miss five races in the fall after breaking his shoulder at Auto Club. Rudd would fully retire after the season.
The worst blow of 2007 would come when M&M's and Mars announced their departure to sponsor Kyle Busch at Joe Gibbs Racing. Yates had no anchor sponsor left.
Yates would also give the #88 to Hendrick Motorsports and Dale Jr for 2008 and beyond, reviving the #28. Gilliland would stay in the #38 while the returning #28 would see Travis Kvapil return to the cup series after spending a year in the truck series for Roush.
Kvapil would surprisingly be a great hire for the #28 car. Four top-10's and 23rd in points is not great, but it's a large improvement over the previous year. Gilliland would score a career best second at Sonoma and would also improve to 27th in the points standings.
The issues with Yates in 2008 was no consistent sponsorship and therefore sponsorship dollars.
2009 would see major shakeups at Robert Yates Racing.
Gilliland was released after 2008, and Kvapil would be gone after Bristol in the spring.
In January yates merged with Hall of Fame Racing and began fielding the #96 for 2000 Cup Series Champion Bobby Labonte. Yates' other car would be the new #98 driving by Paul Menard with the almighty Menards sponsorship.
2009 would be the final nails in the coffin.
Labonte would only post one top-10, a fifth at Vegas, and would be released late in the year in favor of potential future driver Erik Darnell. Menard would not finish higher than 13th in any race.
After the season Robert Yates Racing was done as the team merged into Richard Petty Motorsports with Menard's #98 surviving one more year before RPM shed the last vestiges of Yates and went down to a two-car operation from four. Darnell and the #96 would not survive past Homestead in 2009.
Now before I move forward, I will say I know Stewart-Haas has been a four-car operation most of their tenure while Robert Yates Racing was a two-car team, however I want to highlight a handful of similarities between the downfall of Yates and the likely impending downfall of Stewart-Haas.

• The loss of top drivers. Yates lost Dale Jarrett and Elliott Sadler while Stewart Haas lost longtime drivers Kevin Harvick and Aric Almirola. (While I would place Chase Briscoe over Almirola personally, Almirola's veteran presence provided the #10 the best run's it had to that point.)
  
  • The loss of anchor sponsors. Yates lost Mars and UPS over two years while Stewart-Haas' loss of Busch and Smithfield and a reduction with Mobil but this did not have much effect on the #14 and #41, losing the financial side of it has hurt them.
  • Losing out on superstar free agents. Yates lost out on Mark Martin and all the other major moves in 2007-2009, while Stewart-Haas lost out on Kyle Larson in 2020, and many more during the recent driver moves of 2022-2024.
  • Failing to replace those top drivers with equal drivers. Yates failed to find their form after Jarrett and Sadler departed. Only Kvapil is classified as a quality replacement based on results, while Gilliland, Menard, Rudd, and Labonte all failed to meet expectations. With Stewart-Haas replacing Daniel Suarez with Cole Custer and then Ryan Preece. Briscoe has been a good replacement for Clint Bowyer and the Jury is still out on Josh Berry and Noah Gragson replacing Harvick and Almirola, but I am at least going to say that Gragson has been an excellent hire.
  • Robert Yates Racing after 2009 had a quasi-alliance with Front Row Motorsports and the rumors have also said that a merger is on the table for Stewart-Haas and Front Row.

While I hope and pray Stewart-Haas will be around in 2025 my gut instincts are saying otherwise base off what I've seen happen previously.

27/28. Batgirl Begins - 4/5 (Starting this in medias res was a good choice, since if you're already familiar with Batman stuff, you know Barbara was gonna become Batgirl in this (and even if you don't, the title would reveal as much). So starting with a Poison Ivy fight made me more curious to see everything that lead up to it was opposed to just waiting for the "reveal" that Barbara becomes Batgirl and Pamela becomes Poison Ivy. Plus, Barbara's snarky narration was amusing. Introducing Batgirl as Batman's first sidekick (even if this was merely due to a stupid embargo) as well as making Poison Ivy be her best friend turned arch nemesis is pretty fun because of its uniqueness alone. Especially because it makes the stakes more interesting when Ivy has a personal grudge against Gordon. And I liked Batman's "not every child gets the opportunity to rescue their parent" comment. Yeah, it's cliché, but that stuff is the core of Batman, so it's nice to see this side of him acknowledged, since it rarely is in this series. Also, making Gordon not able to recognize Batgirl as Barbara because he wasn't wearing his glasses was pretty "clever". "Clever" in quotations because it's still dumb, but since most DC shows love to sell you on the idea that people cannot recognize each other's face by simply putting a mask on the top half, it's funny that this series bothered to give an explanation at all. He should still have recognized her voice, but you can't win 'em all.)
29. A Dark Knight to Remember - 3/5 (Freezing Poison Ivy in the previous episode, then defeating the Kabuki Twins by freezing them in this as well? Batman is becoming Mr. Freeze. Anyway, here's a pretty standard amnesia cartoon episode. Decent gimmick, and they also added a stock Secret Identity Almost Discovered:tm: plot to spice things up. The circumstances of Bruce's amnesia being the perfect cover for Barbara dropping the idea that he could be Batman is fun, but Bruce's actual amnesia is just cartoonishly illogical. Even if he lost memories of his last few years as the Batman, how would that also genuinely make him a self absorbed playboy? He was always a broody guy with a heart of gold, even before donning the cape and cowl.)
30. A Fistful of Felt - 3/5 (This is just a poor man's Double Talk. It treads the exact same stuff; Wesker is cured of Scarface so he lives a peaceful life before Scarface forcibly reappears at the hands of someone trying to bait him and he succumbs to it before Batman eventually confronts him and Scarface gets destroyed. Except this is way less substantial and lacking in drama and emotion. It's a shame, because during the group therapy scene, I was excited that this could potentially be a formula bender, having it take place entirely in Arkham Asylum and focusing on Wesker's recovery process. But then I remembered this is The Batman, so yeah. Also I HATE Snooty's design!)
31. RPM - 2/5 (Wow, after seeing this, I immediately went out and bought The Batman Batmobile #2 with working lights & sounds, firing disc launcher and opening cockpit! No, but really, did I actually just watch a toy commercial for 20 minutes? I get that that's where action cartoons make their profit, and that's fine, but this was so blatant it's not even funny. Like that scene of Batman arriving in his new CGI Batmobile as the camera spins around it. Give me a break. Not to imply the writers were being hacky or anything. It was clearly an executive mandate. They just wrote a lame episode around it. Gearhead wasn't very interesting, although it's cool he was voiced by Will Friedle I guess. And the episode is just about cars, a subject I do not find interesting. I did laugh at Barbara asking Gordon "taking the car?" and he just opens the door and stares at her.)
32. Brawn - 4/5 (At this point they should rename the series "The Batgirl" since most episodes now put her in the main role, having to save Batman's butt. Not a complaint, it's a nice change of pace from the repetitive Batman Stops Villain:tm: plots. This episode is pretty darn good though, which is surprising since it's really nothing but a long fight scene. Most of it consecutively takes place in real time on one street street as they duke it out. You'd think that would get boring, but Bane-ified Joker is a cool enough concept to genuinely carry enough entertainment value on its own. And Batgirl using the Batbot was fun.)
33. The Laughing Cats - 4/5 (Two Joker episodes in a row? Also a Catwoman episode, which... Yeah, Joker being in it was obviously an improvement. Making her team up with Batman to stop Joker was more interesting than had it been about Batman stopping another one of her generic jewel thefts. Them being stuck in a maze with Joker using their gadgets was fun, and I liked that his hyenas were not loyal to him at all, LOL. As a side note, Kilgore Steed's hunter schtick makes NO sense. Capturing animals to put them in a giant maze full of traps that will just automatically kill them is not much of a "hunt".)
34. Fleurs du Mal - 3/5 (I guess the show isn't going to acknowledge any drama between Barbara and Poison Ivy and she's immediately relegated to stock villain who does her villainous schtick and gets defeated? Clayface all over again. It also wasn't much of a mystery who the villain could be since it literally begins with the mayor being taken over by flowers. The characters themselves uncovering the mystery and battling the plant replicas was neat enough, so whatever. And Batman punching an old lady was funny. I don't understand why Poison Ivy replaced Penguin, though. She's replacing the people who control Gotham, and he's a washed up nobody who's lost his fortune. Also, Batman is lucky he only fought the plant replica or he would have killed Penguin. He fell right into spinning blades which clearly shredded him... Although he's still intact when they land, so I guess logic took a break for this scene. Side note, the show is getting WAY too reliant on ending with a zoomout of Batman and Batgirl as she makes some snappy comment.)
35. Cash for Toys - 2/5 (So Cash can return but not Yin? There is no justice in this world. He wasn't funny in his first appearance, and he's...slightly less unfunny here. So yeah. Add a straight up Toyman ripoff instead of just Toyman, for some reason, and you get a pretty lame episode. I get that he's a Superman villain, but the series didn't have a problem using Solomon Grundy, so Toyman shouldn't have been off the table. You could assume they just embargo'd him because he made cameos, albeit speechless, in JLU. But then, Grundy was the main focus of a JLU episode less than a year before Grundy's Night, so this doesn't add up! Not that Krank being called Toyman would make a difference, because I still wouldn't like him. So, YEAH.)
36. The Apprentice - 4/5 (Joker getting a sidekick is definitely a fun idea, and while I obviously liked this episode, it plays out exactly how you'd expect. I liked how wholesome Joker was to Donnie at first when he was brainstorming ideas and then turned grim when Donnie didn't want to hurt people. It definitely adds at least one more layer than the average Joker Shenanigans:tm: episode. You can definitely feel how genuinely scary it would be to simply be around this lunatic, especially if he has it out for you. Also, Donnie's jokes probably doesn't get laughs because he's in high school doing kindergarten tier jokes.)
37. Thunder - 3/5 (It's Maxie Zeus, the most iconic DC character of all time, doing his typical Olympus schtick. Yeah, so, the episode isn't really about him. His scheme is just a setup to show how well Batgirl can carry herself. And in that aspect, I do find it fun. It's a bit dumb that she yaps to Batman about how she wants to be in the loop though, as if she isn't just Batgirling of her own accord. He never agreed to be a team, she just stalks him. Side note, Gordon sternly correcting Grange with "batarang" made me chuckle.)
38. The Icy Depths - 4/5 (Despite being the umpteenth episode about stealing jewels, this was refreshing due to presenting it more as an actual mystery and having two villains, alongside Alfred and his old chum, trying to uncover it. It was fun how they all got the upper hand on one another, and I always like Alfred being involved in an adventure. I don't understand why Batman even needs to stop this "crime", though. The treasure doesn't belong to anyone anymore. And if it DOES rightfully belong to someone, that would be Penguin. What was up with a random rotating shot of the boat here though?)
39. Gotham's Ultimate Criminal Mastermind - 3/5 (Mr. Freeze's Arkham number is 800B5. I bet they thought they were really funny with that one. Unlike the previous BTAS ripoff episodes, this was only vaguely a ripoff of Heart of Steel, so I'll cut it some slack. But it's pretty thin. D.A.V.E. is just super smart and wants to defeat Batman, then Batman wins by just telling him something that does not compute. I guess it's neat that they finally built on those vague hints about Hugo Strange being "evil". It's just a shame the antagonist is merely his robot, not actually him. And why does he get locked in Arkham after being caught? He's not insane.)
40. A Matter of Family - 3/5 (Who sharpened Bruce's jaw?! Also, Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy. As for the actual episode, I was underwhelmed. It's a pretty straightforward telling of Robin's origin story, but it rushes the emotional moments and doesn't let them get too "heavy", which makes them less effective. Zucco is a pretty upfront mustache-twirling villain instead of a mysterious figure, and they don't really acknowledge how devastating such an event would be, or the awkwardness of immediately being adopted by a rando. Dick just gets some watery eyes then he's instantly comfortable at Wayne Manor. But I liked tying "Robin" into something his mom used to call him. Batman speaks with a much deeper voice in this episode. Must've come with the new jaw.)
41. Team Penguin - 4/5 (Did it really take seeing teamwork in a movie for Penguin spawn the brilliantly unique plan of "more villains = harder for Batman"? This was a fun teamup, though. I'm glad they didn't go for the obvious choices like Joker, Mr. Freeze, Riddler etc and instead opted for the "misfits". Croc is the only one of the group I didn't care for. But I liked seeing Ragdoll again, and Killer Moth was pretty funny. I liked that he remained a suckup even after being horribly mutated. I liked the theme of teamwork the episode had, since it ties nicely together with the valid jealousy Barbara would have for some rando in red becoming Batman's sidekick and knowing his identity when she has been wanting that for ages. Also, Robin immediately wailing on Penguin for calling him a lackey made me laugh.)
42. Clayfaces - 4/5 (Nice to see my buddy Bennett again. Guess they wanted to redeem themselves after the nonsense they pulled with Grundy's Night. But given this is his last appearance, this was a pretty unsatisfying "arc". Him going full-blown villain didn't make sense from the start. His desire to take revenge on Joker I get, but aside from that, it shouldn't have taken him THIS long to realize he should use his powers for good instead. Basil Karlo wasn't a super compelling character or anything, but him being an ugly dweeb was quite funny, and the spectacle of two Clayfaces duking it out more than makes up for it, because that was pretty awesome. Side note, why is this company so picky with who they cast in their fricking dog food commercial? It's dog food. Just show dogs.)
43. The Everywhere Man - 3/5 (I like the concept of the Everywhere Man, but was disappointed at how little they truly utilized it for story/action potential. The first half is just a mystery where you're supposed to think it's two guys (provided you did not read the episode title), then Johnny just expositions how his powers work and Batman fights a bunch of copies. The villain himself being a copy is a cool twist, but it would've been more interesting if the copies mostly worked as a hivemind and they utilized that to make fighting them really hard for Batman since they'd be such a perfectly synchronized army. The episode wrapping itself around some girl saying Johnny was cuter as a nerd, and then the real Johnny getting the girl in the end was so random it's almost hilarious.)
44. The Breakout - 4/5 (Black Mask being in this episode is pretty neat, as he is a fairly well-known character who, despite that, doesn't seem to appear in animation a lot. That said, he was not very compelling. He's just a stern, no-nonsense mob boss. Which for the plot of this episode is all he needs to be, so I won't give him flack for that. It's a fun change of pace to have a mostly Batman-free episode with focus on his sidekicks instead. Batgirl and Robin have a pretty charming dynamic; I liked when they guessed what Black Mask's face looks like and he got pissed off. LOL. And it was interesting how it's sort of a bottle episode, with most of it taking place within the police station as they try to prevent Black Mask's militia from breaking in. Batman ending the episode by telling them to wash the Batmobile was a certified LOL.)
45. Strange New World - 5/5 (This was great. I really like Hugo Strange, so it's fun to actually see his sinister side now that he's been outed as a villain. And while at first it felt mostly like a standard zombie story, the dramaic tone and hellish visuals, alongside the crazy ways the zombies jump around, made the whole thing a pleasure to look at. But the twist is what really got me. I didn't put it all together myself until right as Batman was figuring it out, and it really made all the scenes of him fighting zombie Batgirl/Robin/Gordon amusing to think about in retrospect. That said, isn't this a Scarecrow-tier scheme? I guess since he couldn't be in this show they just gave it to Strange.)
46. Artifacts - 3/5 (For an entire episode set in the future, I was expecting more than just the spectacle of a generic Mr. Freeze battle. But that's really all there is to it. That said, I liked the W I D E Batman design. I know it's an homage to The Dark Knight Returns, but I've never seen or read that, so yeah. Mr. Freeze blatantly saying that title after seeing the Batman was so funny, though. It works contextually, but when you know the reference it felt no different than if he had said "Batman: The Animated Series". LOL. I see Barbara will go the Oracle route in this show. Sad. Also, they can blatantly reference Bennett and Yin, but refuse to show them any further regardless? Screw. You.)
47. Seconds - 4/5 (The Batman's take on Clock King? He's not officially named as such, but it's pretty much a Cosmo Krank/Toyman situation again. I found his time travel abilities fairly interesting, as it was fun to see some random schmuck effortlessly upstage Batman. HOW he got those powers though... He got bored in prison and was surrounded by clocks, so one day he could shift time. What? Also Batman has an atomic clock that is not affected by time literally shifting backwards. What?? Yeah, so, this episode has a lot of "okay buddy" moments. But really, they just added to the fun. If you're gonna be nonsensical, might as well go all in. And that ending really caught me off guard. Imagine reliving 17 years of your life like that, only to still end up a fricking clock repairman. He really couldn't have invested in stocks he knew would have gone up?)
48. Riddler's Revenge - 4/5 (I certainly wasn't expecting this series to try and pull off an emotional Riddler episode. One that actually works, no less. But here we are. It's not the deepest thing in the world, but I thought seeing his origin handled this "seriously" was an fun take, and it was interesting that his own origin was a "riddle" that he got wrong. Wrapping the origin around him and Batman being trapped in a crate was pretty clever. Although after unwrapping his entire life story to Batman, I would've thought he would be a little less hostile towards him after they escape. But no, he just goes back to being evil. I liked Batman's final line though. "When is a villain, not THE villain?".)
49. Two of a Kind - 4/5 (They got Paul Dini in just to write the Harley episode. It's pretty good, though. The different take from Mad Love is amusing to see. I think showing Harleen as a loudly outspoken ditz makes her descent into jester-themed criminal more believable. Especially since they directly give her a personal vendetta to push the criminal aspect further. But since this episode is mostly banking on showcasing the "unique take", it's hard to look at it past comparisons. Without them, it's sort of just The Apprentice but with Harley instead of Donnie. But Harley is funnier, and generally I liked all the zany stuff she and Joker gets into, so this is the better "Joker gets a sidekick" episode. Plus, it has a whole ass Joker musical number.)
50. Rumors - 3/5 (The Batman's take on... Lock-Up? Okay, not really, but the similarities did cross my mind. The premise here is pretty basic. Rumor was not a very thrilling antagonist or anything. He's some generic guy who works for another generic guy, who's just a red herring because he blames being a cripple on Batman. Really, the spectacle of Batman fighting all his past villains in the final scene is the best part of the episode. Although I'm confused why some of them are even there and in costume. Cluemaster only had one goal, why would he still be Cluemastering? And is Spellbinder really Gotham based? How did Rumor even capture him? He's a psychic! And Harley Quinn literally JUST became a villain. I liked Penguin begging Batman to stop him, though. LOL.)
51/52. The Joining - 4/5 (Oh geez, it's Martian Kronkhunter. Couldn't Patrick Warburton voice him instead of Cash Tankinson? I liked the way he casually outs knowing Batman's identity. But on that note, they sure talk about that in public a LOT here. Including the aforementioned scene, both Robin and Bruce himself yaps out "Bruce Wayne is Batman" on two separate occasions. Robin says it in a crowded street, Bruce in a small diner. Yeah, I'm sure absolutely NO ONE within the vicinity could have possibly heard those things. It's not like Bruce and J'onn are having a lengthy conversation about it right where the waitress, chef, and any potential surrounding customers could hear it or anything.
This was a pretty basic alien invasion story, and it's quite a leap in stakes compared to the usual jewel thievery. But I liked the usage of Martian Manhunter. I thought he and Batman had an interesting chemistry. Their initial fight scene was so stupid, though. "Oh no, the Batman discovered I'm an alien. Better not explain anything and instead just beat him up and run away until he catches up and then say I'm on his side". I thought the emotional anchor of Batgirl and Robin feeling unwanted was a bit undercooked, but the moment when Batman says he worries about losing them was sweet, so whatever. And I liked the scene of the villains helping the police fend off aliens.)
53/54. The Batman / Superman Story - 3/5 (With the show finally being allowed to bring in more expansive DC lore, the first thing they make is the most generic Superman story they could think of. Yeah, okay. I liked the way Batman discovered Superman's identity, and seeing the villains of Gotham take him down was fun. But a whole episode just for that that setup, with the second being a prolonged Batman vs. Superman fight scene and then stopping Lex Luthor from doing something evil? Yeah, I didn't really jive with it. Also, with literally ALL of the sky available, did Superman really just fly right into Robin? AND ignored it? Not very boyscout-y.)
55. Vertigo - 3/5 (This was decent, but it mostly thrives off of the novelty of being a Green Arrow crossover as opposed to being an organic Batman story. In fact this would have been improved by cutting out Batman entirely. I liked seeing Green Arrow's origin, and they could've explored his attempt to take revenge on Vertigo and such on his own. And while he DOES do that here, since it's a Batman show, most of it is from Batman's perspective as Green Arrow recaps his story. So, ultimately, they should just make The Green Arrow.)
56. White Heat - 4/5 (Neat revamp of Firefly. He was never a particularly compelling character, but the fact that he was already established in this show makes his descent from petty thief to molten monster in this more compelling by default than had this been his first episode a la Killer Moth or something. And with the inclusion of his girlfriend, it had some genuine emotion. Not a tearjerker or anything, but his last appearance being his girlfriend dumping him and walking away as he's stuck in a pitch black prison cell with him still faintly glowing in the dark is pretty bleak. So the fact that they managed to get all of that out of an episode that can be summed up to "Batman stops molten villain cause he's too hot" is impressive. The battle at the power plant itself was pretty awesome though. But Bruce is really risking his identity fighting with half his face exposed like that.)
57. A Mirror Darkly - 3/5 (Just like the Superman episode, the writers barely do anything to justify its existence besides thinking I should be thrilled by the mere presence of Flash. Well, when the plot is as generic as one of Flash's iconic rogues coming to Gotham to be evil so Flash stops him and Batman helps because it's a Batman show... I'm not. And just like Superman again, Flash didn't leave much of an impression of me. Adding the trait that he talks incredibly fast was amusing, I suppose.)
58. Joker Express - 3/5 (I would have thought with free reign to utilize all of DC lore, this show would be over their generic Joker Scheme:tm: episodes. Guess not. There's literally nothing to be said about this one that hasn't been said about the others, though. Batgirl being infected with Joker's laugh was definitely a very enjoyable scene. But after that, it's as predictable as Topsy Turvy, JTV or The Apprentice.)
59. Ring Toss - 3/5 (Green Lantern. I wonder what fresh, unique plot The Batman crew will conjure up for this one. Oh, Sinestro comes to attack Hal Jordan, but Hal wins. And Batman helps in between, because it's a Batman show. Starting to sound like a broken record here, but that's how unimaginative these episodes really are. It's competent, but it's pretty much shut-your-brain-off-and-enjoy-the-action tier. This one does have the middle part of Penguin with a power ring, which was genuinely gold stuff. The only problem is, it doesn't last for long enough, and ultimately Penguin's inclusion is really just time filler in between Sinestro being defeated.
60. The Metal Face of Comedy - 4/5 (Let me get this straight, Joker is digitally copied by wearing a helmet connected to a laptop while getting shocked? On top of the common trope of cartoon writers not understanding how video games work, logic is clearly not this episode's strong suit. The phrase "mentally download money" pretty much speaks for itself. Regardless, the prospect of Joker vs. Joker is fun enough alone. All the wacky antics Joker 2.0 is able to get into with his morphic abilities were visually fun. It's especially amusing to see the real Joker completely discombobulated by being upstaged and betrayed by, well, himself. Even cheering on for Batman to win.)
61. Attack of the Terrible Trio - 3/5 (The Terrible Trio were fun as a group of misfits, but it's pretty laughable how these college students are being bullied like it's middle school. Also do they really expect me to believe the hot, edgy chick is considered a loser? Jake is the only loser here. It's cool that this show actually had them transform into animals, even if the designs are little...awkward. It's also neat that they gave them a connection to Barbara's personal life, but at the same time it's disappointing that they didn't put Batgirl in a bigger role because of it. Batman's still the one saving the day. Also I was a little disappointing David's final transformation wasn't any more creative than just a griffin. As a side note, it's nice that this closes the door on Langstrom's Man-Bat arc.)
62. The End of the Batman - 3/5 (Fake title, there's three more episodes. The idea of an Anti-Batman and Robin is pretty fun. Wrath served as an entertaining foil to Batman what with figuring out his identity and everything. I think the ending is a little cheap, though. Joker uses his smile-gas so much, you'd think there would be a common antidote by now. Not like Wrath and Scorn are gonna be like that for the rest of their lives. Also a portion of this episode is pretty reminiscent of Team Penguin. Something which they even acknowledge themselves. But just because they point it out doesn't make it not true! Joker being annoyed by being put on menial tasks was funny though.)
63. What Goes Up... - 4/5 (Same as the previous Justice League members, Hawkman didn't leave much of an impression on me. But this time it doesn't matter as much because the episode doesn't put half the spotlight on him. It's mostly focused on Batman stopping Black Mask's, a villain whom I already thought should be utilized more, scheme. Which is stealing a whole building! I mean how cool of an action setpiece isn't an airborne building? On top of Robin being nth metal'd, it was a very fun watch. Really, Hawkman and Shadow Thief feel more like afterthoughts. But even that isn't a bad thing, because they had very enjoyable action scenes. And geez, poor Number One #2.)
64/65. Lost Heroes - 4/5 (Oh, the actual Toyman appears in this show. "Toyman" my ass, that's a damn Jester. Cosmo Krank is more of a Toyman than you will ever be, bud. This episode is pretty fun, if only because I think the narrative of non-superpowered heroes proving their capabilities and humbling the heroes with superpowers when they can't use theirs is amusing. Batman and Green Arrow as a duo was good, and everybody fighting their robot counterparts was cool. I think the robots had pretty rad designs. The only "bad" aspects of the episode is rehashing The Joining as the threat again, and Hugo Strange's inclusion. Not that I don't like him, I think he's a great villain. But this wasn't really a story fitting for him. He's better working from the shadows with the intent of studying the behavior of his victim, not just being a pawn to some alien robot.)
