I would love to hear from those who were homeschooled as children, especially for educational/mental health reasons rather than religious reasons. Did you have a positive or negative experience? Do you feel it prepared you for college/adulting? Did it foster a stronger family connection?
We're considering pulling our children from the local public school (still in early elementary) with the thought that they'll re-enter in 6th or 8th grade, or sooner if we reach a point that homeschool is no longer working for them. Our local school is not meeting the needs of my 8yo 2nd grader, academically and otherwise, and we can't afford a private school at this point. I want to believe that I'm giving them the best start in life, but most of what I've read has been from the perspective of those doing the homeschooling. I'm having a hard time finding real feedback from those who were homeschooled, successfully or unsuccessfully.
In case it's helpful: I'm researching strictly secular curricula. I have 2 bachelor's degrees and spent 10 years as a teacher before switching to nursing, and will continue working part time. The kids would attend forest school 1 day a week and multiple extracurriculars, plus a standing weekly playdate with another homeschooling family (their best friends), and maintain contact with their friends from public school. I believe it would best meet the needs of my ADHD/SPD/gifted kiddo, for reasons too long to list here.

Am I wrong? I feel like the narrative of being a natural player and the youngest seeker in 100 years etc etc is spoon fed and never questioned.
As somebody with a lengthy background in athletics, including a collegiate career and multiple national titles, this bothers me. the first question I have is why is an 11 year old making the team? The school consists of 11-17 year olds. You're telling me there's not a single kid that's an upper classman capable of being literally the most important position? He makes the team almost by default imo. Imagine you're high school (grades 9-12) football team being like "Yeah, we're gonna start this 6th grader at quarterback." It's wild to me.
That aside, it's the 2nd point I have that actually makes me think he's average.
Money. In our real world, sports like track, football, soccer, rugby, your talent is mainly capped by your athletic ability. Can't be a 100m sprinter without being fast. As a seeker, hand eye coordination is obv huge, physically catching the snitch, but athletically speaking, there aren't many requirements. Even Crabbe and Goyle make the team 6th yr. I'd argue the faster you can fly the better the player you are. Now, some of this will come down to aerodynamics, laying flat on the broom, just flat out being a good flier, and we can call that technique. But, the single biggest variable in performance is 100% the broom they are using. Harry has the best broom available NEARLY the entire series. He is using a nimbus 2000 and then the firebolt and he's flying against cleansweeps and shooting stars and other ancient hammy down brooms. The only time he faces a broom of equal or better caliber is when he faces Malfoy book 2 when they're on the Nimbus 2001s. And granted he does win. I'm in the middle of a reread and several times he is way behind on somebody who saw the snitch first and he just out races them to the snitch. Not possible on a lesser broom. Once he was on the clear opposite side of the field and he made it the length of the field to catch up and get the snitch. It's like using a metal bat in baseball when everyone else is using wood. For those that don't get the reference, metal Bats hit way farther and the pros use wood for this reason. Cedric is a better flier. Cedric beat him and we can say dementors, but Cedric had the lead on the snitch before the dementors showed up and Harry was coming from behind on a faster broom.
Harry's quidditch career is product of having a better broom in every match.

A 6th grader at my son’s school has lost her mother to cancer. He has a younger brother. Dad left them and grandparents came from their country to take care of the kids. They don’t know any English, they got some help from their consulate but not ongoing help. They hired a lawyer to get their Greencard and the kids Greencard. They don’t have any income. Us, bunch of parents from school got together to raise some funds for them but that will only keep them afloat for a while. We are trying to arrange a legal help for both grandparents and the 12yr old from a non profit here in California and trying our best to negotiate rent with the apartment they live, help them get a drivers licence, gather some resources etc. Unfortunately mother didn’t have a will or life insurance. Grandparents also trying to become kids legal guardian. I follow this subReddit and see you help many people. Can you guide us what else we can do to help this family? Especially for them to sustain a living here while kids continue their education. Once they got their Greencard, I think they will have an option to take the kids back to their country as well but sadly it was mother’s dying wish that kids stay in US even if it means adoption.

We all want more content added that’s a given so what features would you like added? What possible story lines or side quests? Maybe a quality of life feature not yet in the game?
For me I just want some in game communication..a ping system or pre set chat phrases anything lol. I also think there needs to be some elites. Not quite a boss but more strategy required than the trash mobs.(6th graders/adults I would hardly call elites lol). A higher difficulty too. This game got way easy way fast.

I’m a middle school teacher. During our grade level meeting today, we were discussing what our non-negotiables will be next year. The discussion got a little heated (more frustration from teachers than anything), but it did make me curious. What do you do to help your students be more self-sufficient?
What happens at your school when they don’t have a pencil? Paper? A charged computer?
Our 6th graders have to make a to-do list every week. It is the end of the year, and they still don’t understand that the reason they make the list is to actually complete the missing work.
We have students that will trash our belongings, their belongings, and classmate’s belongings. If we try to discuss it with them, they just expect us to replace it and fix it.
What DOES work for your school? What consequences have you been able to give that actually work?

Long story short, my band is small and allows rising 7th graders to do marching band if they excel. They need to be able to play the(Bb pitch) C, F, G, Bb, and chromatic scales, as well as get to a G at the top of the staff.
I was asked to help a kid that seems to be a non-favorable candidate for getting to these milestones. Since I have never tutored our gave any lessons(this is unpaid of course) I would like to ask for tips or little analogies that have really helped you or someone you taught.
For specifics, this is a 6th grader that has received little to no special attention or additional help. As far as I’m told, he has an issue with getting above a C in the staff, and below average tone quality for a 6th grader(my band director is a percussionist so he knows nothing about good brass technique). He is also very shy and scared to ask for help.
Any advice on common things to look out for or things to do would be greatly appreciated. I would also love any videos you may have saved or any suggestions that I can give him or watch so I can know what to say.

The next Nihongo release is something I've wanted to build for a very long time and I'm super excited to show you all what I've been working on.
Ever since I first discovered the term rikusho I wondered "why did my Japanese class never teach me this??". If you haven't either, the gist is that it turns out kanji come in different flavors. Some of them are pictures of things, some of them are combinations of the meanings of different elements, and a whole lot of them are combinations of a meaning and a sound element.
I think this is super useful for learners trying to remember the characters. But I also think the 6 categories of rikusho are a little bit wonky, and the etymological dictionaries out there that dive into this stuff tend to require you to become an expert in terminology like "phonosemantic compound" or esoteric Japanese linguistic vocabulary. And in the end, they're focused more on documenting the history of the characters, not on how that history can make it easier to remember the characters.
So I finally decided to build it myself -- a kanji dictionary that uses the real history and breakdown of the characters to help learners remember the characters, in an approachable format that doesn't require any background in linguistics. And that's what I've been working on for the last... **checks watch** 8 months. Holy moly this was a bigger project than I expected. Anyway, I have compiled breakdowns of all 2000+ Joyo kanji, and documented a whole bunch of their component elements as well.

How do people who don’t have this disorder find themselves thinking it’s so cute and fun, and decide to claim they have it.
Especially since fictives are the main cause of these imposters. I have been so EMBARRASSED to even tell people I have this disorder let alone I have fictives. God I can’t even handle it anymore, the thought of someone lying about all of this makes me sick.
I have sat here wondering if my life has all been lie, slowly questioning if the choices I’m making are real and if I’m even making them. If the voices in my head are or aren’t real. I have been depressed my whole life, I have been Su1c1d4L my whole life, I have been scared, horrified and so much more. And people think it’s OK to come here and act like this is the cutest thing to have and roleplay with. I don’t even tell other SYSTEMS I have met (if they’re even real or not) that I have this.
I finally, FINALLY, met people who love me for who I am, and accept that I may not be me at times. And that took me a good few years to even come out and explain. They found it incredible how the human brain works, obviously they were aware of what comes with this and they have been here to help me. I found people who loves me and the others. Instead of pushing it away.
This has been the most degrading thing in life anyone can experience, and I’m even blessed to have people that I can trust, tell, and even have alters who aren’t insane. Yes we all may be crazy at some point, and have depressive episodes. But we all support each other.
Am I young? Yes. Is this very concerning to know at this age? Also yes. But my own best friend from my K-8 school, who I’ve known for 9 years, even told me that I would say We, instead of I or Me, I would talk to myself like someone was there, and would even say sometimes I would just loose myself, zone out for too long, come back confused and so much more. She knows I’m not a talkative person, and that I don’t usually talk about these things, but the fact my own friend since kindergarten was pretty openly aware something wasn’t right with me says a lot.
I was just freshly a 6th grader during Covid. And the media smacked me hard that same year when I found shit out the hard way. I was getting more depressed in quarantine, I was slowly loosing track of time, myself, who I was, who I am. What I can and cannot remember. If I could go back and tell myself don’t do it. I would. I don’t want to know this is my life, I have slowly become more degraded of my surroundings my friends are concerned, my grades are shit, and I’m loosing touch of reality.
I hope people realize that this has been torture. That being mature like my system is even considered a blessing for others sometimes. Be grateful for your family, because this is not what you want. I never wish this upon anyone.

My daughter shared a stream of text messages with me and asked how to navigate the situation. Frankly, her dad and I was ready to bring out the ghetto in us, but since we are in the professional world now and want to tread carefully as our daughter is ultra affected, we needed to do it the right way. I would like to mention that we are southeast Asians and live in a predominant white area.
My daughter is in 6th grade. Her supposed friend (white, female), let’s call her L, added my daughter to a group chat with a bunch of boys (6-8th graders) and another girl. My girl knew none of them except for L. My daughter asked what the group chat was for and who everyone was. Off the bat, one kid asked if my daughter was Asian. Another kid received a photo of my daughter from L. He shared and asked if that was my daughter. She said yes. After that, the comments started rolling in…

And then sent a bunch of Chinese written words/paragraphs asking for my girl to translate. She’s not even Chinese.
My girl asked, “L, why did you add me to this racist ass group chat…don’t be a hater, y’all should be better than that.”
One responded with, “shut up, your Asian.”

1. I told my daughter that her friend L was not her friend. Why did she share your photo to the person, and add you to this group chat? There was an ulterior motive already to hate on you.

I am a 6th grader and all I have played football wise is 7on7. And next year I’m gonna play tackle football. I think I will play tight end. I have a great catching ability I never drop passes. For context, this was a group of 6th graders that I don't normally interact with (usually I'm supporting a 7th-grader) but still funny. Another kid was shooting rubber bands with his fingers and pointed it at me before I raised my brow and said "You realize that I'm a teacher, right?"

My 5th grader just completed her standardized testing after ~3 months of homeschooling. We part time homeschool. We are in Minnesota, she took the Stanford-Ten (Pearson) as assigned by our district. I don’t oppose standardized testing, I like to know my kids are making progress and I do not “teach to the test” or have more than 1-2 days of practice. I do teach to Common Core with emphasis on knowledge over skills so I expect my kids to test pretty well and they do.
She leaped forward in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and math; all 10th - 11th grade or PHS, all 90-99th percentile. Stellar in Science and Social Studiss as well. We worked extra hard on advanced math so she can apply to a special high school in 2 years that requires this as well as a letter of recommendation from a math teacher and I am pleased she met her learning goal for this year in that subject and also did stellar in reading and vocab.
Then comes “Language Expression” and Spelling…she scored average to below average, with the LE category at grade level 3.2. This category is syntax, grammar, sentence structure. This is slightly lower than the start of the academic year and the dip may have come from my husband’s anxiety that she had to complete her testing in a timely manner as he felt she took too long in math (she double-checked every answer). He told her to “go with your gut and answer the first thing” and she pushed through this section quickly.
With that said, these are her first/best answers. Dad is severely dyslexic and she has his reading brain, not mine, so the odds that she has less severe dyslexia are high. We have always known this and worked soooo hard on phonics and decoding but it simply does not click. Her aptitude and intelligence is obviously there. At this point her 7 year old sister (who received all the same phonics education) is a better speller and word decoder than she is as well as a faster reader (we place no value on reading quickly, I am just stating facts).
Once the word is properly pronounced she has no issue defining the word and using it properly, it’s just the mechanics of spelling that are throwing her off and apparently punctuation/grammar is a major issue as well—I suspect her brain wasn’t picking up on details like comma and apostrophe placement.
She’s been in public school about 30% of the time from 1st grade to present, we were always able to keep her just at grade level in language sections but I think she still needs a lot of intervention going forward.
Next year she’ll be in public middle school and I want her to have a 504 plan. My husband did NOT have this, and kept his accommodations private in university (he used software to speed-read for him including scanning software for handouts/textbooks). He did have formal testing at a “reading center” that also gave him tutoring around the same age but in the early 90’s 504 plans were less common and dyslexia was stigmatized. He dealt with intense anxiety and shame about his dyslexia. He is very diligent about keeping his skill up, reading 30 minutes a day on a kindle with special Dyslexia font but the vast majority of his “reading” is audiobooks because reading is a literal headache. He’s also a successful author who has written over a million words with hundreds of happy reviewers rating his books > 4.5 stars so objectively (not just according to his wife) he has a real talent for language, his brain just works differently. When he writes he uses regular software but Grammarly detects his homophones and he uses read-aloud software for editing.
I don’t want my child getting low grades and feeling ashamed for having a brain that works differently, especially knowing that some of her limitations CANNOT simply be “overcome.” Like her dad, she’ll always read slower and with some difficulty with things like spelling and homophones. I’m not saying she shouldn’t work on these areas, just that there is a lot of hogwash in public schools that suggests one can just “work harder” and “be better”—if she has a learning disability that comes with real limitations. I would much rather she have accommodations, including more time to read things and modified assignments. I will continue to do targeted interventions at home.
In my state I have to see a psychologist for this testing, it seems rather intense and expensive and I am worried because she is competent in reading comprehension she might end up being too mild for a diagnosis. I am not sure I will be able to get a 504 without this, but she is asking for middle school not homeschool and I feel strongly without a 504 the transition might shatter her academic confidence.

I (f) and my boyfriend (m) have been on and off since we were kids. Meeting around 11 we grew up together, going through childish relationships to serious ones. Just last year he decided to ask me out for around the 6th time on my birthday (exactly 12am). So obviously I say yes because I’m quite naive. The last time we were together (short term) a lot of unnecessary things happened. He wanted to keep the relationship private in order to not ruin the relationship with his cousin and her friend who I are both 4 years younger than him. Obviously they end up finding out big deal whatever. And so a family issue happened which had me put into a very temporary foster home with my mom’s family friend. So one day we decide to join a group call with them after they blew up his phone to the point he was begging to hang up so we could join the group call. I’ve never had a huge issue with his younger cousin Neveah until this moment. Me and her got into an argument about I don’t even know what. Now, me being 16 at the time and her being around 11 I was not about to fight with a 5th grader. I say maybe the slightest insult and she decides to go “That’s why you got taken away from your mom.” Going through enough emotions InsideOUT would have to make 6 movies on, I briefly leave the call. I immediately text my boyfriend and I tell him my feelings and how I feel that he should tell her something. And his response couldn’t have been worse. He responds with, “She’s still young, she doesn’t know any better.” At this moment, I turn off my phone and head to my best friend’s house, but that’s not important. I explained the whole situation and she agrees that I deserve to feel how I felt. Not long after that me and my boyfriend break up and go on no contact.
Obviously, like I said, we somehow got back together and somehow I forgave him. This time was a little different though;he made the relationship quite public and acted as if nothing ever happened. Not long after we get together he hangs out with Nevaeh every so often. Me, being the petty woman I am, ghost him every time he goes with her. I forgot to mention this, she isn’t his blood cousin at all. They’re close family friends. Anyway, me and him were planning to go see the movie ‘Imaginary’ together. I had the date set and right as I was about to get the tickets I get a text from him saying, “I’m sorry baby, but my mom told Neveah I’d go with her, I’m so sorry.” I’m fuming at this point. All that planning for what, him to go with his 12 year old cousin?! They get to the movies and I make sure to be the biggest bitch ever, making it my top priority. After he went home, he wanted to call, so me being the petty woman I am, I say, “Why don’t you go call Neveah.” And I ghosted him from then. After things resolved, I tell him how I feel. Per usual he defends his “cousin” and so I act like nothing happened. From then on it’s random conversations about her, how I feel, how he thinks I shouldn’t hold a grudge, how I don’t like when he hangs out with her etc. It gets to the point where I say, “If you love hanging out with her so much then just get with her.” He didn’t like that very much and quickly changed the subject
Just recently, we had been talking about how we practically grew up together and what we plan for our future after uni. I thought the conversation was going quite slick until he says, “As I grow older though, I’m gonna try to do things for Neveah; Her parents are always fighting and I feel ba-“ I cut him off right then and there. “Neveah isn’t your priority. She isn’t your girlfriend, your sister, your daughter, NOTHING. She is absolutely nothing to you Isaiah! You act as if she belongs to you, like she plays the same role as your girlfriend. I’m sorry, but if you’re planning our future with her in the picture, I don’t want to be apart of it. If she’s so important to you, you can go ahead and be her boyfriend or husband or whatever you want to be, but if you want us to have a future together, then you’re going to have to play your role too.” I exclaim and hang up. We resolve things and go on. Since then, I haven’t been the same around him.
Just today he went on a roadtrip to his ACTUAL cousins house. They just got a new dog on about Thursday and so his mum was about to ask Neveah to “babysit” the dog. They drop the dog off and his mum asks, “Does Neveah want to go?” And Nevaeh goes, “YES”. Not knowing this, I ask my bf an hour into the trip who he’s with out of curiosity. He tells me that it’s him, his mum, his dad, and none other than Nevaeh. I get irritated so I cut off the conversation and turn off my notifications.
I feel like I need to respect myself but I also feel as though I’m being a bit harsh. So tell me Reddit community, am I the asshole?

Alright I guess I have made posts about this ever since i joined reddit (deleted as we passed through)
So let's give context I have liked this girl "P" from the day I joined my new school in 5th grade (currently in 11th). I was her secret admirer, although we were relatively good friends, I rather developed feelings for her quickly. This thing carried through 6th grade as well and by the end of the year I gathered enough courage to confess my feelings to her in hopes of her liking me back (fuck 6th grade me). On the last paper, I asked her to meet me in the basketball court during dispersal. She wasn't able to show so I sent out my best friend at that time to carry the message(i thought it was romantic... SO CRINGE). He came back to me and said that she said nothing, sort of a "cliffhanger". This word has been synonymous to my entire being with her. COVID struck that year and shit went online, I created my insta account and found her mother's Instagram (didn't do shit about it). One odd day she texted me through that account to play a game of Ludo king ( pretty popular back then), we had a couple of rounds then she got to the point and asked whether if what my friend told her was true, i said yes. Now here comes the fun part, I don't remember exactly what she said but it went something along the lines of "I see but I don't want anyone else to know about it"... This is THE CLIFFHANGER, what did she mean?is it a yes? I wasn't forward enough for a clarification, we chatted a LOT in lockdown, like really a LOT. We used to play 21 dares on chat (only truths ig) and occasionally I used to ask questions like who'd she date in our class, what's her ideal date (FUCKING CRINGE AGAIN) shit continued, I don't remember half of it, but I gave a lot of tries and shit (not too assertive, really passive) Once COVID subsided, post-8th grade, my friend group had a meet-up (class ke bacche) and P was one of them. Now that I think of it, super cringe, but we all met up and had a great time and after she and a few others left (ok so I had told others I had a crush on her... Ig broke the promise), two of my friends ( ek Banda and bandi) told me to call her up and say what I had to ( I had pre planned a confession for that day but couldn't get it through), so I rang her up and told the good old I have a crush on you shit, usne kaha she'll talk to me later... CLIFFHANGER
She texted me the next day that she valued our friendship and basically a 'not a yes + not prepared to be in a relationship with anyone + don't want to break parents trust's
Also i was switching schools that year, started in a different school (that i am currently in) in 9th grade, I believe that also played a role in her not accepting. And now I was heartbroken as shit, oh fuck (cringe ahh).
Adjusted in this new school well, many good friends and a girl A in my class that I started to develop an interest in, we used to hang out all the time almost like a couple, she used to hug me ( this school is sort of not the most liberal in terms of this lol so a big thing) and even gave me a kiss on my cheek once (fuck i thought everything was going on track)... Hello, I am wanting to sign up my 6th grader for virtual school. We live in lake county and I see that they offer virtual school. How is it different from FLVS? Which is better? I prefer live classes for my son and not flex. Please your recommendations will help. Thank you.
